C’MON WSAFC! NOMINATE YOUR TERRIFIC COACHES AND MAYBE WE CAN HAVE ANOTHER WINNER FROM WSAFC THIS SEASON! Every year, over 6,000 coaches volunteer their time to help Kiwi kids “kick start” their football dreams. They spend their weekends coaching local teams and making sure children get active, develop their football skills and, most importantly, have fun.

New Zealand Football and Junior Football partner McDonalds once again are teaming up to find the ‘2017 McDonald’s Junior Coach of the Year.’ Last year our very own Scott McKee was the AFF winner.

1. Click on northstar.co.nz, go to Spell-Check Database 2. Click on the correct database and enter wsf as the account name (no password). 3. Find your record number, click on ‘Edit record button’ 4. Please only make spelling changes, add or delete spaces and change to capitals or lower cases. Add players names, if missing. Do not make line breaks or font changes.

Over a six week campaign beginning May 29, New Zealand Football and McDonald’s will be asking the football community to nominate their coach of the year for 2017 via an online application form – www.nzfootball.co.nz/ coach-of-the-year

5. Enter your name and date so they know it’s been changed.

TO ORDER PHOTOS 1. Go to www.photoservices.co.nz and find WSAFC 2017 icon. 2. Find your record number 3. Add your team image to the cart 4. Enter the number of prints required (one order per team please) and select #6 ‘no charge’ from the Shipping Zone. 5. Go through to checkout. Prints are $15 each. New customers will need to register.

Nominations are encouraged for positive behaviour both on and off the pitch, including supporting players positively from the touch line, introducing new players to the game and helping out in their local community.

6. Carry on through to payment. 7. Please order your prints by Friday 7 July. After this time the price increases to $20 per copy + postage.

This year we will have three prize categories:

If you do not receive a confirmation email, please email admin@photoservices.co.nz

1. Regional shortlist winners (3 from each Federation). Each to receive a coaching equipment pack to use for training and games.

Western Springs were represented at the recent World Masters Games, the largest multi sport event in the world. Almost 25,000 athletes (more athletes than the Olympics) from 100 countries descended on Auckland for 10 days, including more than 10,000 Kiwi competitors. The World Masters Games is open to sports people of all abilities (which is why some of our team were included) and most ages – the minimum age criterion ranges between 25 and 35 years depending on the sport. Auckland, New Zealand hosted the event’s ninth edition. Two Western Springs AFF/NFF Mens Over 40 Conference teams (Kosmos and Hoops) joined together to represent the club. Our campaign started successfully by winning the group stage through two wins and a draw (against a Canadian, Australian and a fellow Kiwi team). Unfortunately we saved our worst performance for the Quarter Final and narrowly lost to an Australian side (and yes, they made sheep jokes!). We played a further two games against an Australian and Kiwi side and won both to reach 5th overall.

All managers should have received full name-checking and ordering instructions after their photos were taken. If in doubt, please contact admin@photoservices.co.nz

2. Regional winners (1 from every Federation). Each to receive a coaches apparel pack. 3. National winner (1 overall winner). One winner to receive a 2017 Club World Cup experience for two people in Abu Dhabi valued at $12,000 8 June 2017 www.wsafc.org.nz

P17 WHAT MAKES THE SPRINGS FOOTBALL EXPERIENCE?

COERVER / WESTERN SPRINGS JULY CAMP 2017

…OUR PRICELESS VOLUNTEERS! With it being ‘National Volunteer Week’, it’s highly appropriate that we recognise the role of volunteers within our Springs community. We are fortunate in that we have a wealth of volunteers that give up their time both on and off the turf to make the football experience at Springs so enjoyable. New Zealand Football are giving out vouchers to a selection of deserving volunteers. If you would like to nominate a volunteer who gives up their time to make your club, grade or team tick then email affcommunications@ aucklandfootball.org.nz and describe in one or two paragraphs what role the person undertakes and how they make an impact in our community. It would be awesome to have one of our Springs volunteers recognised by New Zealand Football! If you’ve not volunteered so far but have some time, skills or knowledge that may benefit the club and our kids then drop me an email letting me know how you would be keen to help – fdm@wsafc.org.nz. See some of our volunteer coaches in action in the surrounding photos.

I’d like to thank all of our volunteer coaches for the energy, enthusiasm, care and skills that they bring to Springs. In giving up your time to be on the turf with our lucky kids, you make our in-house football experience such a huge part of the week for the kids and for many the highlight (I believe it may be for some coaches too!).

WSAFC EMERGENCY PROTOCOLS

Lightning

“If you can see it, flee it. If you can hear it, clear it.“

Lightning is dangerous and has struck and killed footballers on the field. If you can hear thunder then the associated lightning are within auditory range… about 9.5-12.5km away. The distance from the origin of lightning to where it can strike can also be 9.5-12.5km. Please treat all thunder storms as serious.

Drop, Earthquake cover, hold. During Trainings or Games

If possible move away from buildings, streetlights or utility wires. Stay clear of light towers and other tall structures. If the earthquake is ‘long and strong’ there is a risk of Tsunami. Evacuate to the safe Tsunami zone in the car parks by Western Springs High School.

Tsunami

WSAFC SPONSORS Phone Paul Thomas

If in doubt, clear the fields. Severe weather may include tornados, hail storms, gale force winds or serious storms.

If you are inside, stay inside, stay where you are until the shaking stops. Drop to your knees. Cover your head and neck with your arms to protect you from falling debris - if you are able to crawl for additional cover under sturdy desk or table. Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and anything that could fall such as heaters and light fixtures. Hold on to sturdy covering so you can move with it until shaking stops.

If there is a long and strong earthquake, get uphill.

Seddon Fields is located with the Evacuation Zone for a medium sized Tsunami. Move immediately to the nearest higher ground. Know where the tsunami evacuation route goes – the safest place is toward the zoo or Western Springs College.

Fuji Xerox delivers market-leading document services and print solutions.

www.fujixerox.co.nz Complimenting McDonald’s local sponsorship of clubs like Western Springs AFC, a new national sponsorship has been agreed with New Zealand Football.

Building on the Small Whites and McDonald’s Skills Zone programmes, McDonald’s Junior Football cements McDonald’s position as a key supporter of junior football in New Zealand. McDonald’s is working with New Zealand Football to increase the number of young players registered with clubs around the country, and also providing additional resources to football development officers. 15,000 footballs will also be handed out to Kiwi kids through the season.

During Trainings or Games Clear the field immediately and move to higher ground. Listen to local radio stations and do not return to the evacuation zone until given the all clear. • If there are others in the club, shout ‘FIRE, FIRE, FIRE!’ and assist them out of building • Activate Fire Alarms

Fire

• ‘Get Down, Get Low, Get out - Fast.’ • If you can, close doors behind you to stop the fire spreading. • Once out, stay out – never go back inside. • Meet at the planned meeting place – in car park outside club • If you can’t get out of the club, close the door of the room you are in and put a towel under it to stop the smoke coming in. Go to the window and yell ‘FIRE, FIRE, FIRE!’ Wait to be rescued. • If there is a fire at Seddon Fields, Call 111 immediately

Further information and instructions will be in our clubhouse, on our website and on our App. Please take the time to read them incase of an emergency. www.wsafc.org.nz June 2017 19

Our teams competing in AFF leagues have now moved into their post grading leagues and are competing against the best Auckland teams at their level. Some of our teams are trying to maintain their lofty place in the upper parts of their respective leagues whilst others are pitting themselves against other teams for the first time and striving to show off their skills and win a few games. While results are important to the kids (…and coaches and parents!), the continued growth in their game understanding and development of their skills are key to their enjoyment and future love of the game. Lets ensure they keep enjoying their training and games and the learning will follow!

kids continue to kick start their weekends with the eagerly awaited Friday night football; our fantastic coaches continue to give up their time (and leave work early to dress to impress!) to encourage not just their own teams but others also with their endless enthusiasm and love of the game. Similarly, our Saturday morning Game Leaders enthuse the 5th, 6th and 7th grade kids as their love of the game grows. Our 7th grade development teams have now joined our 8th grade development teams in the 9th and 10th grade in-house and have noticed the greater challenge set out for them.

In our in-house football, with grading rounds having finished for all of our 9th and 10th grade in-house teams, the most competitive part of the season is about to begin as they come together and play against teams spread across both grades with most games being well contested. The 8th grade

WHAT MAKES THE SPRINGS FOOTBALL EXPERIENCE?

In our in-house football, with grading rounds having finished for all of our 9th and 10th grade in-house teams, the most competitive part of the season is about to begin as they come together and play against teams spread across both grades with most games being well contested. The 8th grade

kids continue to kick start their weekends with the eagerly awaited Friday night football; our fantastic coaches continue to give up their time (and leave work early to dress to impress!) to encourage not just their own teams but others also with their endless enthusiasm and love of the game.

WSAFC EMERGENCY PROTOCOLS Severe weather storms and accidents happen and occasionally we have emergency situations at WSAFC and Seddon Fields. These protocols will keep you and your teams safe at Seddon Fields. Severe Weather

Be safe. Plan ahead

Lightning

“If you can see it, flee it. If you can hear it, clear it.“

Earthquake

If in doubt, clear the fields. Severe weather may include tornados, hail storms, gale force winds or serious storms.

Drop, cover, hold.

Tsunami

If there is a long and strong earthquake, get uphill.

Seddon Fields is located with the Evacuation Zone for a medium sized Tsunami. Move immediately to the nearest higher ground. Know where the tsunami evacuation route goes – the safest place is toward the zoo or Western Springs College. During Trainings or Games Clear the field immediately and move to higher ground. Listen to local radio stations and do not return to the evacuation zone until given the all clear. During Trainings or Games • If there are others in the club, shout ‘FIRE, FIRE, FIRE!’ and assist them out of building • Activate Fire Alarms

Fire

“Get Down, Get Low, Get out – Fast”
