CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
HELLO TEAM WESTERN SPRINGS! May is upon us and we are well into the first round of seasons fixtures. By now we have experienced quite possibly all the emotions of triumph and defeat, the satisfaction of playing a good game or the great sense of comradery that comes from just being part of a team. Hopefully by now we have you kitted in the new club strip and the teams are looking as one. Be sure to check out the jackets and supporters top options further on in the newsletter (page 8). It is great to see the teams getting to train at the home grounds and everyone respecting the turf and facilities.
One big issue with the constant use of Seddon Fields is the significant increase in pressure on parking at the club and surrounding streets. Please be careful and observe the yellow no parking on the Northern side of Meola Road. Please bear in mind the parked cars narrow the street and make it difficult for any through traffic and potentially dangerous for pedestrians trying to cross to the cars illegally parked on the grass verge. Remember, we are also more likely to be playing or training in worse weather as winter comes than previously with our grass pitches.

WELCOME
ADAM DICKINSON ON BEHALF OF WSAFC I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME AND INTRODUCE ADAM DICKINSON TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CLUB. Adam has joined the club as a First Team player and a club coach. Adam will be helping myself and Liam Mulrooney get around the massive amount of youngsters at the club and hopefully scoring plenty of goals for the club’s First Team. Adam has already got off to a great start in that department scoring two goals and assisting three goals in the three games he has played.
He has already stamped his personality in the changing room and is a great team man. I am delighted he has joined us and I know he will be a great addition to the club. Adam has been a professional player in the UK with Tranmere Rovers and more recently been a big part of the success that Auckland City have achieved in the past five years. Adam has appeared in four different prestigious FIFA Club World Cups in the past five years starting in each and every game his team have played. He also scored in the 2009 game verses Al Ahli in the UAE the year the Auckland City were crowned the 5th best club team in the world! Born in Liverpool, England, Adam, 27, is in a very exciting chapter in his life with his Brazilian born partner Evelize giving birth recently to their first child Lucas and I know he is thrilled to bits with the new addition in the family.

SPRINGS GO INTERNATIONAL We are underway once more. It seems to have just been a blur from Christmas to now, but already things are shaping up well for the club for this season. Our Men’s First Team had a good 2-0 win against Mt Albert on Anzac Day. Our Women’s First Team were very unlucky to lose in a tight game against Glenfield. I would just like to pay special thanks to all the senior managers who have assisted with the registration process this year. Despite the difficulties with moving over to the electronic registrations, they have managed to whip their teams into shape and ensure the club collects the fees required, which is no mean feat, so many thanks for all your time and efforts.

Now we have Patrick running the kitchens upstairs, we hope you are seeing a sharp upturn in the quality of food now being offered. The numbers ordering certainly seems to be growing. We encourage the juniors and seniors alike, to try out Patrick’s food and also consider him for any events you want to hold down at the club. Now we have the club rooms as we want, we need to ensure we keep them clean and tidy. This also means that we want all senior players coming into the club rooms to have showered and changed first. This way you can enjoy a drink and something to eat, rather than risking offending others with smelly kit or bodies!
On a cleaner and greener note, Springs have gone international! Recently, NZ relief workers who had been working in Matemwe (a village on the north-eastern coast of the island of Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanzania) contacted the club and asked if we could help support some of the local villages there with an odd shirt here and there. We were only too happy to oblige and provided them with two of our old style kits (one home and one away). As can be seen from the photo, the villagers loved them. I think however, Mario may have stretched one or two of the tops!

CLUB PHYSIO THE YOUNG ATHLETE The opportunities for our young footballers these days are endless. Great facilities, great coaches and an ever improving knowledge base can mean the training our children receive, is world class. There are some issues that can arise in our young players when they are training a lot however, that can restrict their enjoyment and performance. Club training, school training, academies, FTC’s, NTC’s, other sports and running around with their mates all adds load to a growing skeletal system, and can often overload the young athlete, causing pain and reduced enjoyment and performance. Signs of overload can be fatigue, complaints of niggling injuries that are not resolving, pain at the back of the heel (severs), or anterior knee (osgoed schlatters). How we manage the young athlete can have a big impact on their enjoyment and desire to stay in the game. Overtraining is when the load the athlete is under from training and non training stressors, has a detrimental effect on their performance that can last for weeks or months. Signs of overtraining can be increased sensations of fatigue and heaviness, reduced motivation, muscle soreness, sleep disturbances and loss of appetite.
Some strategies to help manage the load: Make a training diary and look at how many sessions a week (formal and informal) your child is doing: •
Ensure they have a rest day.
•
Ensure they get to sleep early at night (that’s mainly when the body repairs itself).
•
Seek medical attention if your child is complaining of injuries or pain that is not settling—most often it can be a simple case of overload but there can be more serious conditions that require further investigating.
•

Communicating to the coaches when your child has a higher training load or reducing the non essential training sessions will allow them to cope with the essential sessions.

Massage, stretching, foam rolling and treating acute injuries properly can make a big difference.

Playball is a specialised sport coaching programme for children aged two–nine years, teaching children basic movement development skills and sport skills and technique, as well as instilling healthy life values. Over the past 25 years the sport and movement programme has been developed, improved and re-designed, resulting in a coaching system which is educational in every aspect. Playball programmes are age-specific, with each of our programmes taking into account the difference in the cognitive, emotional, social, and motor development of the children in each age group. Our programmes for younger children are more focused on movement development, with a smaller ratio of sport skills. Whereas programmes for older children have a bigger ratio of sport skills, and a smaller percentage of time is spent on consciously developing movement skills which is so necessary in the younger years. All of the programmes are taught in a positive, energetic and fun-filled environment. Myself and my team (all with a sporting background of some sort) have a strong passion for Playball and its promotion of getting and keeping children active. WSAFC 25 YEARS OF HISTORY 1989–2014 1989 Grey Lynn Celtic and Point Chevalier Association Football Clubs agree to amalgamation with their inaugural General Meeting of the WSAFC Inc. held on the 8th February 1989 at Moa Street, Point Chevalier. Meeting chaired by Mr Allan Fraser of the Auckland Football Association with 54 members present. The season commenced with the club fielding seven Men’s, one Women, ten Junior and six Midget teams, with player membership of approximately 375. Officers elected: Patrons—Bill Cargill and Bill White President—Kenny Westlake Secretary—Angela Woods Treasurer—Robyn Smith Senior Club Captains—Steve Wildsmith and Stafford Page Junior Club Captains—Margaret Oldfield and Derek Jones and a Senior Committee of 12. Coach Dave Blackett and possible recruitment of two imported players and aim of retaining 2nd Division status for season 1989. 1990 Senior Men—Coach Dave Blackett retained however mid season terminated and replaced by Shaun Kelly and Ian Wild (UK). President—Kenny Westlake Two imported players retained for senior team—Ian Wild and Neil Hansen—(both ex UK). We continue to seek a permanent home with playing facilities through the local authorities. First approach to Auckland City Council (ACC) by letter dated 19th Oct 1989 re-Seddon Fields 14 May 2014 www.wsafc.org.nz

Further letter received from ACC suggesting development of Seddon Fields as a sports ground. 1991 Senior Men—Coach John Trickett & Reserves Barry Williams. Retain 2nd Division status for season1992 with Senior/Reserves games being played at Cox’s Bay Reserve and others at Walker Park. Under 19 coached by Ian Hill runners up in Championship. 1992 Senior Men—Coach Graham Routledge and trainer Jimmy Sheppard. Reserves managed by Clive Morton win championship. Women’s team with coach Brent Woods back again for Regional 2nd Division and unlucky not to win the championship. Juniors and Midgets grow to 205 boys and girls. The club receive the Administrative Award from The Auckland Football Association. Ponsonby Rugby League apply for use of grounds at Seddon Fields and are rejected by ACC. 1993 Senior Men—Coach Kevin Birch Senior Women—Coach Brent Woods. Discussions with Metro College Sports Club and Mount Albert AFC re possible amalgamation meeting with ACC on the future grounds including Cox’s Bay, Western Springs outer fields and
Seddon Fields Meola Rd. Club fielding six Senior Men’s and one Senior Women’s team and total of 250 boys and girls in the Junior and Midget teams. 1994 Further amalgamation meeting with Metro however no progress made. Senior Mens—Coach Kevin Birch Team Manager—Brendon Smith Team winners of 2nd Division Championship. Squad—Willie Sellar, Phil Brown, Brent Woods, Jason and Shaun Perry, Jack Winters, John Scott, and Mike Farac. Club has 107 Men and Women players being six Senior Men’s and one Senior Women teams along with Junior and Midget teams totalling 360 boys & girls. Sale of 788 Great North Road Grey Lynn (former Grey Lynn Celtic “Caddy Shack” Clubrooms) for $170,000. Women’s Player of the Year— Sue Bingham Sporting Personality—Willie Sellar First Team Most Promising Player— Liam Mulrooney Club Captain Trophy— Jack Winters. John Verkley accepted as Life Member. Presentation on proposed clubroom building at Seddon Fields at a cost of $820,000 with projected funding of $720,000 plus a loan of $100,000.

Planning consultant appointed and approval of ACC to proceed on building of clubrooms at Seddon Fields. 1997 Senior Coach—Chris Wilson for First Team playing in Bluebird Northern 2nd Division Competition. Club has six Senior Men’s and three Senior Women’s teams along with 31 Junior and Midget teams, totalling 380 boys & girls. New building projected to start November 1997 after approval at special general meeting early August 1997. Building cost estimate $835,000. 1998 ACC building consent dated 20th November 1997 for Seddon Fields. Senior Men’s Team under coach Jack Winters wins Bluebird Northern 2nd Division Competition. Club has six Senior Men’s and three Senior Women’s teams along with 300 boys and girls in 35 Junior and Midget Teams. 1999 Foundations laid for new building at Seddon Fields in February 1999 with aimed completion in June 1999. Opening clubroom “sportsday” 18th July 1999. Senior Teams total eight with an estimated 500 boys and girls in Juniors and Midgets In November 1999 mid week

Stephen Lowe made life member for his services to the founding club, his contribution to the Building committee and continued work during and after the forming of WSAFC. 2000 Senior Men’s Team drops down to 2nd Division for 2001 season. History of the furthest that the founding club Comrades had reached was the semi-final losing 2-1 against eventual final winners Wtgn. Waterside whilst WSAFC had previously progressed to the last 32 in 1990 losing 5-4 against Mt Albert AFC.
