CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE WE LC OM E BA CK ME MB ER S With the official start of the Junior and Youth season not scheduled until the first weekend in May, it is great to see the clubrooms and fields in regular use for various activities. At the moment we are heading towards the end of summer league and have started the trials process for Youth teams which is a major undertaking. Once these are finalised over the coming weeks our fantastic coordinators will look to build the remaining teams across the grades and let everyone know. If you could be patient as we work through this process, as we will have over 1400 children to work through. We have taken on board the feedback we received from members last season and appointed Tracy Cunnington as the Communication and Sponsorship Coordinator for the club. Tracy will look to make

sure you are all fully informed of any activities coming up and we are already putting together a schedule of events for the year including all holiday programmes, hopefully this helps with your planning! Unfortunately we had to change the planned Junior Open Day to the morning of the 18th April due to issues in pulling the activities together however we look forward to seeing you on the newly proposed date. Senior registrations are now open and the subscription fees need to be paid prior to the season start, as the club has to pay the senior team fees to Auckland Football at this point. The club has a firm policy for the season of “No pay, No play”. Teams need to have met their 16 player threshold prior to the start of the season in order to play in the AFF leagues. If you registered last year, you can use your username and password

to reactivate your registration and pay on line at the same time, it will take only a couple of minutes. Please note that all personal information (such as date of birth etc.) may be used collectively to help the club in grants and sponsorship applications etc. All data held is protected under the Privacy Act 1993.

Senior fee costs: Seniors – $250 (each team needs a minimum of 16 paid players - $4,000). Under 19s – $165 (see U19 category on registration link) Please be aware that there will be a Senior Team Managers’ meeting held at the club on Thursday 12th March at 7pm at the clubrooms. WESTERN SPRINGS AFC APPOINTS A COMMUNICATIONS AND SPONSORSHIP COORDINATOR After almost twenty years in the marketing and advertising business, Tracy Cunnington has finally found her perfect job – at Western Springs Association Football Club.

band, Mike, in the summer Corporate League.

We wish Tracy all the best in her new role at Western Springs. If you’d like to contact Tracy, her email address is: comms@wsafc.org.nz

Known for her smart direct marketing strategies for the likes of IAG, Westpac, ANZ and Mercury, she loves using data to target customers and to drive customer behaviours. She loves all things comms, especially measurable marketing.

Having been born in Highgate, London – Tracy quickly found the answer to football happiness was through Arsenal Football Club. When Mike and Tracy moved to NZ in 2003, Tracy had to give up her season ticket in the Clock End, Highbury, but her heart is still very much there. She’s now swapped N5 for Seddon Fields, but couldn’t be happier with her choice!

When Tracy is not putting communication plans together, she is most likely to be found on the turf coaching and cheering her three devoted sons or playing football with her hus-

Tracy is working closely with Michael, Geoff, Paul, Jo, the coordinators and all the committee to deliver communications to our members that are personalised, timely and relevant.

SPONSORSHIP PUTTING YOUR BUSINESS CENTRE STAGE AT WSAFC WSAFC has over the past five years become a hub of activity in the community. Over 8000 people pass through the facilities every week during the season of April – October and almost half as many again in the off season. This provides a high frequency, high reach opportunity for businesses wanting to take an active role at a grass roots level and within this community. An opening now exists for a few great companies to partner with WSAFC as sponsors and in doing so assist with the continued growth and strength of the club.

THREE TIERS OF SPONSORSHIP ARE AVAILABLE FOR CONSIDERATION

Lead

Gold

Delivers maximum profile and exposure at and in association with the club and WSAFC activities The lead in promotional and PR activity Option of brand inclusion on club uniforms High visability signage inside and outside the clubrooms and turf

Family

Delivers high profile and exposure at the club and WSAFC facilities Regular contributor and feature in monthly newsletters High visibility signage inside and outside the clubrooms and turf Opportunity for greater engagement with club members and supporters

Delivers profile at the club and WSAFC activities as part of a family of community sponsors The Family Group of sponsors high signage will be inside and outside the clubrooms and turf Opportunity to share your customers passion for this game and to attend an end of season function with the First teams

Starting with the family group of sponsors the cost is $3,000 per annum, with the Gold and Lead sponsorship options alternatives for companies wanting a greater involvement . Sponsorship of the club by local businesses is a great way to differentiate your business by supporting your current and potential customers . For national and regional businesses, this is a unique chance to build your brand by engaging with an

influential and affluent customer set at their place of choice. The sponsorship period will follow the calendar year commencing in January 2015. As one of the fastest growing sports in New Zealand, it is set to be a huge year for football and WSAFC with the FIFA Junior World Cup in NZ in June and continued growth of WSAFC club and teams.

If your business would like to take centre stage in this community hub please contact Miranda Burdon on 0274741019 or Miranda.burdon@xtra.co.nz to discuss these opportunities or for further information.

CLUB PHYSIO WHAT TO DO WHEN SOMEONE GETS INJURED As we are getting closer to the start of the season it is a good time to plan ahead for what happens in the event of a serious injury on the pitch. Unfortunately, it is a reality that at some stage we are likely to bear witness to a bad injury and if we are planned for it then the outcomes are usually better. Talk with your coach and manager about the different roles you have. Some questions to think about: • Who will run onto the pitch for all injuries? • Do you know the rules around removing a player from the field of play? • Can you help apply RICE on the sideline if they have a minor injury that they can’t continue with? • Do you take ice to the game? • If someone does have a bad injury, where is the closest A+E, or is it better to call an ambulance? On the weekend if you do not have a qualified person at the event then it is best to take them to the local A+ E, or if very serious the local Hospital.

When should you call an ambulance: • Does the person’s condition appear life-threatening? • Could the person’s condition worsen and become life-threatening on the way to the hospital? • Could moving the person cause further injury? • Does the person need the skills or equipment employed by paramedics or emergency medical technicians? • Would distance or traffic conditions cause a delay in getting the person to the hospital? • If you suspect someone has had a cardiac event or stroke • If you are unable to move the person because they are in too much pain • If the person has a urgent medical condition (allergic reaction, severe asthma attack) We have a stretcher onsite in the downstairs sliding door lockup area and a defibrillator on the deck at WSAFC in case of a cardiac emergency. It is really easy to use, just turn it on and follow instructions. It usually takes around 10 mins for an ambulance to get to WSAFC. We hope we never have to use it!

Once you have a diagnosis and an ‘action plan’ then its time to get on with your rehab! 10 March 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

NIKE CUP REPORT MANCHESTER UNITED PREMIER CUP 2015 The Auckland qualifying tournament for this year’s Nike Cup was held at McLennan Park on Sunday 15th and Sunday 22nd of February. This is the largest age group club football tournament and involves 15th Grade boys competing to be one of the 24 teams from around the world that travel to Manchester for the tournament finals. Only one club is eligible to represent this part of the world and in the last three years both Onehunga Sport and Waitakere Utd have gone on to win the Australasian qualifying tournament and have travelled to Manchester to play 15th Grade sides from clubs such as Chelsea, Boca Juniors and Barcelona. It is certainly something to aspire to. The Nike Cup is a particularly intense and competitive tournament and this is the third time that Springs have entered a

12 March 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

team in the competition. Again as a club we have looked to develop and expose some of our really talented younger players from the 13th and 14th Grades alongside some of the older and bigger 15 year olds. A couple of trainings and a successful warm up win over Forrest Hill had the boys looking forward to the tournament. However the draw wasn’t kind and had us up against tournament favourites and eventual winners Onehunga in the first game. It didn’t help that despite hours of planning someone who shall remain nameless had sent the parents and boys to the wrong park. Onehunga went up 1-0 early before we lost our main man Phoenix to a torn hamstring putting him out of the tournament. The boys held on well against a big physical and well drilled side before conceding two late goals. The next two games brought tough 1-1 draws against Fencibles and Three Kings, with the last game against Three Kings a really pleasing result for the boys who showed tremendous character to battle back from a goal down, turn the momentum and

grab an equalizer through Flynn’s excellent strike. The second weekend of the tournament saw Neil alongside PT and me in the dugout, though we were caught out by a very physical and clever Ellerslie side in the first game. However, the last game saw the boys play some terrific football and they came away with a well deserved 2-1 victory over Papakura City with Oscar really shining along with Seb. I’d like to thank our large group of great supporters who turned up both days and especially the boys who gave everything and competed really well. The future is bright for this group and for the club. THE GREAT WSAFC BOOT SWAP SATURDAY 18TH APRIL 2015 (CLUB OPEN DAY)

BEFORE THE KICK-OFF TO THE 2015 SEASON, WE ARE ORGANISING A COLLECTION OF SECOND-HAND BOOTS IN GOOD CONDITION, TO BE ‘GIFTED’ TO KIDS WHO NEED A BIGGER PAIR OF BOOTS FOR THE NEW SEASON. How it works: From early February there will be a boot collection box upstairs in the club house. Bring in your old boots (tied together by the laces) in a bag marked with the size. Drop them into the collection box. During the Club Open Day on Saturday 18th April, you are invited to come along and select a pair of boots that will fit you/your child for the 2015 season. You can make a voluntary $5 donation if you take a pair of boots. Strictly one pair of boots per individual. The idea is to be able to pass on your old boots to others when they become too small, and in turn, you get to take a bigger pair for free. However, the offer of a free pair of boots is open to all families, whether you have an old pair to donate or not. Likewise, please feel free to donate old boots even if you do not want a pair in return. Any surplus boots will be donated to a Club who needs them. 14 February 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

PREMIER TRIALS The last few weeks has been a hive of activity at WSAFC as we have been holding Prem Team Trials for girls and boys from grades 9th – 17th. With almost 600 players trialing across the grades it demanded a rigorous and robust selection process to ensure we have the right players in the right team for their development. We have seen some incredible displays of

skill, sportsmanship and conviction during the trial process. It was great to see so many new players, both from within the club and those new to WSAFC, attending the trials and looking to make these top Prem Rep teams. With so much depth at the club, it is wonderful to see our teams going from strength to strength every season.

We congratulate every player for taking part and look forward to seeing them displaying their skills during the season at Western Springs AFC. All Prem Teams will be announced by Friday 13th March and they will also be up on our website. Enjoy the season ahead.
