FROM THE COMMITTEE By the time you read this the 2015 season will have finally kicked off for all teams across our club. We hope you were blessed with fine weather and fine football and we wish every team the very best for the season. As sport does, there will be some wonderful highs and euphoric moments both individually and as a team. Enjoy those highs as there will inevitably be hurdles, hiccups and a few forgettable moments along the way as well. However these are often the moments that develop character and resilience especially for our younger ones. Now is a good time to remind all members of our code of conduct and reinforce the behaviors we encourage and expect from all players, coaches, parents and supporters.

PARENTS and SPECTATORS Football is an exciting game and as with most sport, emotions can run high. Please remind parents that they also represent Western Springs and their behaviour, good or bad, has an impact on the club culture. If you are having difficulty with specific parents or spectators and you do not feel comfortable addressing them directly, please refer the issue to your grade co-ordinator. MATCH DAY

As representatives of Western Springs AFC, it is important that you read, understand and follow these rules around behaviour. Above all, you must set a good example for our young players.

Coaching players during a match is the responsibility of the coach. We strongly encourage you to insist that parents do not shout instructions from the sideline. More often than not, they are counter-productive to learning, can confuse the player and undermine confidence.

• Always show respect to match officials, opposition staff, players, and spectators

Cheering and encouragement is all they need from the crowd!

• Adhere to the laws of the game and promote the spirit of fair play

Next month the FIFA Under 20 World Cup kicks off in Auckland and what an event this will be for football lovers. Good luck to the NZ team and particularly our own Neil Emblen and Sam Brotherton. Also quick congratulations to Chris Zoricich who was recently appointed to the NZ Under 17 coaching team for their World Cup later in the year.

COACHES and MANAGERS

• Have a zero tolerance for racism, offensive language, abuse or bullying • Place the well-being, safety and enjoyment of players above everything, including winning Please note that misconduct can result in disciplinary action by WSAFC, the Auckland Football Federation and/or New Zealand Football.

Cheers The WSAFC Committees

WELCOMING BACK PBT One of the most steadfast and recognisable sponsors at WSAFC is PBT Group. Through the past six years of rapid change and growth at WSAFC, the club has been lucky enough to have had their consistent support which is ongoing as we head into the 2015 season. This partnership came about due to PBT’s commitment for aiding the development of Kiwi youth. The partnership with WSAFC enables PBT to support a fantastic club that provides the surrounding community, particularly the youth of the club with the opportunity to develop important skills such as self-confidence, leadership and teamwork in a positive environment. This focus on youth development is well demonstrated whenever the growing numbers of juniors and youth players turn up to compete whether on the home pitches or around Auckland and NZ. It is a commitment both WSAFC and PBT share.

One of our annual events is a PBT Drivers vs. PBT Staff football match. This year the PBT drivers took it out.

As a 100% Kiwi owned and operated family freight business, the partnership is very much a case of Kiwi’s supporting Kiwis which is really what clubs are all about. Having started as a one-man, onetruck business, PBT has grown to be one of the largest privately owned Kiwi freight providers in NZ. They provide smart and flexible freight solutions to make the distribution element of the supply chain simple, fast and stress free. They have the ability to provide the complete freight solution with their Courier, Transport, Bulk and Logistics solutions. The PBT Group can deliver anything from the smallest envelope to the biggest shipping container, anywhere in New Zealand, as well as offering storage and freight management solutions through their Logistics brand. Their “one-stop” solution eliminates the requirement for multiple suppliers- simplifying customers’ distribution process while saving time and money. Please do recognise the ongoing support of your club by PBT and contact them if you have business they might be able to help you with. For quotes or information, please contact the sales team – 09 250 0449 or visit www.pbt.co.nz www.wsafc.org.nz May 2015 5

CHRIS ZORICICH The club would like to congratulate our Assistant Director of Coaching, Chris Zoricich on his appointment as Assistant Coach of the NZ under 17s Men’s Team. Chris has joined the National body’s technical team and will help the team prepare for the World Cup in Chile in October this year. Chris has had a lot of success already during his coaching career having already won the Chatham Cup with Central United and leading Auckland City Youth to back to back titles. During his playing days Chris captained the All Whites during his 50+ caps and played professionally overseas for several clubs. Chris, who was also Assistant Coach to our very own Neil Emblen at the London Olympics in 2012, will now gain more International experience which will no doubt rub off on the juniors and seniors he helps to oversee at Springs. With Chris and Neil in under 17s and 20s positions respectively I’m sure as a club, we are getting a good gauge on the level that our junior and teenage players are coming through need to be at for International recognition. Best wishes from the club in your new role Chris.

WOMEN’S KNOCKOUT CUP It was a clear, sunny day but with a strong gusting wind across Murdoch Park for the only all Premier Knockout Cup game. It was a sluggish first 10 minutes, we never passed the ball quick enough, but then with the first real chance, Rebecca Tegg dribbled around their goalkeeper and finished to open the scoring. As the tempo was raised the chances became more frequent and Melanie Gooch scored a first time finish from a cross into the box. Rebecca Tegg added a third and her 5th goal of the season to complete the first half scoring. A better start to the second half led to two more goals in the first 10 minutes both scored by Lauren Mathis. The second one curled left footed into the far top corner of the net. The girls were now in complete control and

very comfortable in possession. Becky Hawker headed home from a corner to make it 6-0, and Lily Rose Dyer completed the scoring with 5 minutes to go. In the last minute, Rebecca Tegg hit the post for a second time to deny herself a hat trick. So 7-0 it finished with all five strikers in the match day squad on the score sheet. A very satisfying result against Premier opposition. Cheers

FUTURE IS BRIGHT FOR SPRINGS The Junior season for 2015 got off to a great start with the top teams in 9th and 10th grade bringing home wins in the Hamilton North pre-season tournament recently. WSAFC sent three teams to represent the club in the tournament: 9th grade Prem team Vitesse, 10th grade Prem team Nero, and 10th grade division 1 team Verde. Whilst the day threatened to be a grey and miserable one with torrential rain marking the start of play – it ended in bright sunshine and victory medals for Vitesse and Nero. While Verde didn’t make it out of their pool, they gained some valuable experience so early in the season and had a fun day out. Vitesse is largely made up of last year’s 8th grade development squad, although it has has welcomed several new players

to the club this year. Collectively they have formed what looks to be an exciting squad. They got their tournament underway with a tough game against Claudelands Rovers in wet, slippery conditions. The boys narrowly edged Rovers in a hard fought game. That was followed by a solid win over Eastern Suburbs White - the only other Auckland team to make the trip south - then a big 8-0 win over hosts Hamilton North. Vitesse then faced a school team from the tiny Waikato freezing works town of Horotiu in their final pool match. Horotiu gave the boys a real battle and impressed with their all round play, but were eventually were overcome 2-1. Four wins from four pool games took the team into the Championship playoffs. Vitesse won a very competitive semifinal against Western United

from Hamilton by two goals to one. That sent them through to the Championship final against Eastern Suburbs’ ‘A’ team, the Lillywhites. The boys were really up for the final, lifting up a couple of gears against a quality opponent and playing some outstanding passing football. After a testing opening few minutes, Vitesse weathered the storm, took control of game and won it 4-1 in what was their best performance of the tournament. It was a great end to a long, tiring day and a great way to get the season underway. Vitesse is: Zane Marsh, Theo Gorman, Will McKee, George Walker, Ari Bailey, Carlo Imre, Freddie Kyriak, Max McInnes, Fenton Murdoch, Monty Holden.

Nero’s pool play saw some tough competition. While the boys had only 2 prior training sessions as a team for the coming season they jelled well quickly to beat a lacklustre Eastern Suburbs Whites team in the first pool game 3-1. Next up - Cambridge Hatrix were a tougher opponent and the boys seemed to lose their focus and game play a bit to go down 0-1 to Cambridge from a goal in the second half. The third game was another tough contest against Hibiscus Coast a team the boys have a lot of respect for and who always push Nero hard. Nero came out the victor of a very tight tussle 1-0. The final pool game saw Nero pitted against Western United Snakes and Nero coast to an easy 3-1 victory. Nero finished 2nd in their pool after Otumoetai Assassins. The boys were displaying some quality football – great first touch passes, using the space of the field, fast foot skills to create opportunity for goals and as always dogged defence, it’s incredibly hard to score against Nero! Moving into the semi- finals, Nero met old foes Eastern Suburbs Lilywhites. Nero started strong out of the blocks with a superb goal in the first 2 minutes from Maxi Beullens who created space on the wing, moving the

ball forward passing to Toby Duff, Toby passed superbly back to Maxi to put him 1:1 with the keeper and Maxi executed confidently with a strong strike to the bottom left hand corner of the goal. This goal was quickly followed by a strong body tussle from Joe Wallis who muscled passed the Suburbs defender and angle in a fantastic goal to put Nero up 2-0 within the first 5 minutes of play. Eastern Suburbs heads dropped as half time saw Nero with a strong 2-0 lead after dominating the play. Not long after the half time break, Justin Chan took possession of the ball in the backline and confidently streamed up the middle of the field past defender and attacker alike to score a screamer of a goal. The parents went wild as one of our star defenders inked his name in the list of scorers. Suburbs pegged back a goal in the last few minutes of the game from a rare Nero defensive error and the game ended 3-1 in Nero’s favour. The final saw Nero matched against an unbeaten Otumoetai Assassins. Both teams were showing signs of weariness playing their 6th game for the day. It was a hard fought battle with the final scoreline an uneventful 0-0 draw. This sent the teams into penalty shoot-out. Little

did Otumoetai know that Nero had an ace up their sleeves in our talented keeper Joe Wallis. Nero’s nominated penalty takers Maxi, Bruno, Joe W and Adama all expertly slotted their goals into the back of the net. Otumoetai were also on track to continue to tie up the match until Joe Wallis pulled off an incredible save to help Nero to a 4-3 victory – Champions!! Congratulations to our fabulous coaching team Wayne Young supported by Lee Duff for leading and supporting the boys through the games. Thanks also goes to Gerard Smith our classy referee for the day. But most of all congratulations to our wonderful boys who were humble in victory and gracious in defeat. Nero is: Joe Berman (3 goals and speed demon), Maxi Beullens (3 goals and creative King), Justin Chan (1 goal and wall of defence), Adama Coulibaly (1 goal and agile tackler), Toby Duff (endless energy, passing and run in the midfield), Bruno Noonan (1 goal and our strength in the rock), Will Smith (2 goals and steely determination to win the ball), Joe Wallis (3 goals and superb save), Leo Young (miraculous save and guts and heart). Absent for the tournament Oliver Cameron.

Auckland City FC prevailed in penalties and have qualified for the Club World Cup again, this time in Japan in December. Auckland City FC certainly try and do things as well as they can, and this season did a lot of work to ensure the accommodation was as good as we could get and the team stayed at The Pearl and The Grand Pacific. If the team made the final they would have to play five games, three group games, a semi final and a final. Typically, games are three or four days apart, allowing some time for recovery but often not long enough for a decent injury to recover. A typical day training day looks like: Breakfast: 7.00–9.30am Training: 10.00–11.30am Lunch: 12.30–1.30pm Treatments in the afternoon (or some activity that doesn’t require too much effort or time in the sun) Dinner: 7.30pm This means that there is some downtime in the day to treat the players, for them to sleep and recover and relax. 10 May 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

starting players after games, and putting ice on injured areas as soon as possible when the injury occurs and intermittently repeating this over the next 48 hours, ensuring the players get protein into them via either protein bars or protein shakes (bovine milk works too) after games and trainings and then eating as soon as you can after playing. Sleep is one of the most important recovery strategies as that is when the body is repairing. Massage is used to help reduce muscle tightness and pain and the players will also do some independent foam or spiky ball rolling. On the day of the game we go for a short 15 min walk to do some dynamic stretches, this gets the players out of the accommodation, giving them a feeling of the environment and a chance to loosen up. I will be in the clinic during May, before heading off to the Womens World Cup in Canada with NZF’s Football Fernz. Katie is back from touring with the New Zealand Ice Fernz and Sven will be back in June from a holiday in Europe. Jess is unfortunately leaving for a job in a hospital and we will be looking to recruit another physio for our team as soon as possible. Take care and I will see you on the sideline.

Cheers

SURPRISE COACHING SESSION FOR 10TH GRADE NERO When the 10th grade lads from Nero turned up to their regular training session on Wednesday 22 April they weren’t expecting to be trained by one of the Brazilian coaching masters Mauricio Marques. Marques, who is in New Zealand as part of the Fifa Under 20’s World Cup, was holding a demonstration coaching session for a number of Fifa grass roots coaches and the boys from Nero were more than happy to be his coaching subjects! From skills sessions to teamwork sessions and game tactics the kids absorbed every word from the master Marques and had great fun doing so.

WESTERN SPRINGS OPEN DAY In partnership with our new sponsor McDonald’s and with Auckland Football, the club held its first Open Day for Junior players on Saturday April 18. Although the weather was pretty poor it was fantastic to see so many young new players, plus parents brave the weather, come down and join in. AFF had kindly come along and set up a number of skills stations which were manned by Western Springs youth players who all did a fantastic job encouraging the younger children around the cones or shooting for goal. Kids had the opportunity to work around the stations, score points and walk away with certificates, awards and sponsored balls, kindly donated by McDonald’s. The AFF team also had the inflatable pitch set up and a fantastic boot swap run by Catriona Stewart for kids to “trade up”

for the coming season. This proved to be a great success and something the club will definitely run again. With the café open and Tracy C selling boat loads of Western Springs gear, it was brilliant to see so many happy kids walk away proudly at the end of the morning dressed up in their new kit. Due to its popularity you should look out for this becoming a regular event on the calendar. Thanks should go to the Junior Committee for their help, Tracy for her organisation of the day and Miranda Burdon for her activity with sponsors behind the scenes. Thanks

SCHOOL HOLIDAY FUN

APRIL 13 – 16 EASTER HOLIDAYS Loads of fun was had at last weeks School Holiday Programme despite a couple of rough days of gloomy wet weather. Kids aged from 5 to 14 with different skill levels were all smiles as coaches (mostly 1st Team and Reserve players from Western Springs) delivered drills, fun games and small sided game tournaments for the kids to test themselves. With 17 coaches including Springs recent All White call up Sam Brotherton taking the 9th grade kids, the

boys and girls showed fantastic skills and attitude throughout the programme. As a grand finale on the last morning, the kids mixed with the Young All Whites World Cup hopefuls who are only a month out from the second biggest football competition in world football. Hopefully some of the club’s future stars will get the chance to emulate those boys one day. Well done all. Neil

A HUGE “THANK-YOU” FROM A GRADE COORDINATOR It’s May and the season is just getting underway, but the work of grade coordinators has been trundling along since February. But I’m not looking for sympathy and gratitude for all the “thankless” work done behind the scenes. Instead, I want to send out a huge “thank-you” to all parents for their patience, good humour and generosity of spirit – qualities essential for the success of a volunteer-run organisation like Western Springs AFC. This year I’ve had the pleasure of sorting over 120 boys and nearly 40 girls in the 12th Grade into 12 teams. Getting the right players into the right teams is like solving Rubik’s cube. Factors to consider include: keeping players together

from previous years who wanted to play together again; new players, and even whole teams, joining the club; the outcome of trials; squadsize changes; players wanting to play with their friends in other teams; late registrations; players playing up a grade or down a grade; late-late registrations of long-time players; players deciding they now don’t want to play at all. Because of many of these factors, the boys teams in 12th grade have been asked to play with larger squads than are ideal for 9-a-side. When the reasons were explained, this decision was readily accepted by parents. In fact, teams that were already very full welcomed former players, friends of current players, or even completely new unconnected players, into their squads. Busy parents have stepped forward to coach and manage, understanding that traditional sports clubs are

not like other ‘pay for service’ activities for their children: if no one volunteers, the club ceases to exist. They, like all WSAFC’s volunteers, are doing their best to give their children a great footballing experience. That is why I volunteer to coordinate a grade, pure and simple. Our club is stronger because of the selfless commitment of dozens of parent volunteers and the support they get from hundreds of families across all junior and youth grades. It’s a great thing to be a part of. Now the players are getting on with the important stuff: having fun, learning new skills and competing hard. So, to 12th Grade’s Malaga, Milan, Monaco, Celtics, Deportivo, Roma/Galaxy, Jets, Corinthians, Venom, Espanyol, Sonics and Firebolts, and all the other junior and youth teams – have a great season!

THE FIFA 11+ injury prevention programme

MONDAY MAY 11 WSAFC CLUBROOMS AND TURF TIME: 7.45–9.15PM The “FIFA 11+ ” is a complete warm-up programme to reduce injuries among male and female football players aged 14 years and older, however can be used in younger players to help improve movement patterns which is likely to reduce injuries later in their playing careers The programme was developed by an international group of experts, and its effectiveness has been proven in a scientific study. Teams that performed the “FIFA 11+ ” at least twice a week had 30-50% fewer injured players. Justin Lopes will give the background to the FIFA 11+ and demonstrate how to integrate it into your training. Please bring your turf boots as their will be a practical component (not compulsory!)

Come on WSAFC - get behind the FIFA 11+ !

Ideally we have all teams in the club doing this warm up programme. To register, simply go online at wsafc.org.nz and click on the FIFA 11+ link on the home page. WSAFC will cover the cost of any coaching course members wish to participate in.
