! 1. Report On Waterproofing fixing penetrations in Xpressclad xhr (cs20-04) Background and scope PBS Distributors Ltd. instructed Cladding Systems Ltd. to provide a complete waterproof method of fixing the xhr (CS20-04). The fixing should be done with stainless steel bugle head screws supplied by PBS, preferably with their own Butyl tape. The method should have a low profile and close fitting that will not allow any water seepage through the fixing hole. A feature of the xhr (CS20-04) that must be recognized is that the backside has a 1.5 mm deep recess, which the screw passes. This was designed to accept a tape or sealant for waterproofing the holes, may this be required at one point. How we tested In the first and second set up an extrusion without fixing holes was used, the holes were drilled during testing at 400 centres with a total of 8 screws. The remaining four set ups were done using an extrusion with predrilled fixing holes at 250 centres with a total of 13 screws. Two types of tape were used at different set ups; black Butyl tape, supplied by PBS and tape supplied by CSL. The test bar, xhr (CS20-04), had the stock length of 3600mm. long.(photo 002) End caps were added to each end of the bar by sealing them in place with Soudal 220lm modified silicon.(photo 004) The bar was then placed on 3” x 2” framing timber which, in turn, was fixed to a continuous 3” x 3” base. (photo 001) This creates a realistic environment of the uneven surface of studs and nogs encountered by a bar sitting on a building paper air seal. Finally the extrusion must be levelled for it to be filled with water.(photo 005 / 006) The minimum duration is set to 1 hour, afterwards it is inspected for seepage. To complete the test the test bar, xhr (CS20-04), is carefully removed from the timber so that the base can be inspected. This last inspection only needs to be done when there is clearly no seepage showing on the side surfaces.

! 1.1.1. The first set up 15th October 2009 The extrusion used in this set up had no predrilled holes. To fix and secure the extrusion to the frame Butyl tape was used, supplied by P.B.S.(photo 007) Holes of 6 mm were drilled through both the extrusion and the tape, a total of 8 holes with a pitching of 400 mm. (photo 008) The first leak appeared at the 4th hole (right to left) after just 5 minutes. (photo 009) The second leak showed after 30 minutes at the 5th hole. In conclusion, two major failings at the 4th and 5th hole. (photo 010) Five other holes showed minor seepage. Only one hole proved to have no seepage. 1.1.2. The second set up 15th October 2009 Carrying out the test is identical to test number 1, except for the size of the holes. Where they are at 6 mm. in test number 1, the holes are 5 mm in this test. One screw was drilled in tight against one side, this is to simulate inaccurate fixing. (photo 012) Due to this little alteration it resulted in no leaks at all. Even where screws broke through the side of the Butyl it showed no seepage.
! The following four test are all done with holes pre-drilled into the xhr (CS20-04) 1.1.3. The third set up 16th October 2009 The predrilled holes in this test were 5 mm at 250 centres. The butyl tape was then placed over every hole before driving the screws through. This way the butyl should grab onto the thread of the screw, therefore creating a complete seal in the flutes. This worked according to plan as there was no leakage at all. (photo 014) 1.1.4. The fourth set up 16th October 2009 This test is identical to test number 3, except for the tape. Instead of butyl (supplied by PBS), tape supplied by CSL was used. (photo 015) There were no leaks to be seen on the side surfaces of the timber. Only after removing the test bar from the timber, minor stains were shown. Although these were hard to recognize (photo 016)

! 1.1.5. The fifth set up 19th October 2009 The only alteration in this test in comparison to test number 4 is the size of the predrilled holes. As they were 5 mm they are now 6 mm. The results were similar to those of test number 4. 1.1.6. The sixth set up 19th October 2009 Also this test is similar to the previous one. The only difference is the tape that is used. Again the butyl from PBS is used in this test, instead of the tape from CSL. The results were identical to those in test number 4 and 5.

Conclusions & recommendations
It has to be recognized that the testing had placed the fixing holes in the worst possible situation and fully submersed for extended periods of time. The test did account for the only realistic transfer of water through the fixings, that of capillary attraction. The first and set up is definitely to be avoided as it showed major leakage within the first 10 minutes. Only one of the 8 fixing holes didn’t show leakage. The second set up is not recommended, as it takes a certain amount of precision to achieve the correct specifications. Driving the screws too far into the extrusion is a mistake easily made. The tests with the predrilled extrusions all succeeded, regardless to the size of the holes nor the tape that was used. The third, fourth, fifth and sixth set up can be considered as a very safe method of waterproofing a screw penetration in an XpressClad section.

At the 4th of 8 holes (from right to left) 11:30 am Second leak. At the 5th of 8 holes (from right to left) Conclusion Leakage: Two major failings at the 4th and 5th hole.
