Letter from the Board Chair Minnesota Opera is founded on a commitment to innovation and new work. Through opera, all the arts work in unison to elevate the impact of each discipline. When our curtain rises and the lights dim, the confluence of music, storytelling, visual art, and dance honors and strengthens this 400-plus year tradition. The 2015–2016 season was a shining example of what opera is and can be, invigorating the imagination and creativity that thrive in our community to bring compelling stories to life. On behalf of everyone at Minnesota Opera, we’re pleased to share with you the results of this remarkable season that garnered three sold out productions, the creation of two new operas including The Shining on our mainstage and Memory Boy through our Project Opera youth education program, and a beautifully conceived new production of Tosca. We recognize Nina Archabal, who continued her role as interim leader for the organization this season while we conducted a search and hired Ryan Taylor as our new President and General Director. Nina’s continued guidance and dedication to this organization has been admirable, and we truly thank her for her work during this time. Ryan comes to us from Arizona Opera, where he was the General Director. He also has a previous connection to us having been part of our Resident Artist Program during the 2000–2001 season, and additionally has performed with us in the role of Sharpless in Madame Butterfly in 2004. In the following pages, you’ll read about some of the accomplishments of our 2015–2016 season, highlighting the full breadth of our work. I’m also pleased to report the organization achieved a modest surplus for the second year in a row, ending the season in a strong financial position.

Minnesota Opera’s Mission: To combine a culture of creativity and fiscal responsibility to produce opera and opera education programs that expand the art form, nurture artists, enrich audiences, and contribute to the vitality of the community.

“The Minnesota Opera experience has allowed my students to ‘dream’ of opera. They are still creating stories in their minds, talking about Mozart, and using their new Italian words to express praise. They are excited to use their own voice and experiment with all that it can do. This experience was one that will have a lasting impact on their musical learning and appreciation.”
