LETTER FROM MN OPERA LEADERSHIP Opera entertains, moves, and enlightens. It helps us to empathize—to recognize our common humanity across differences with those around us. Now—more than ever—we need opportunities for people to come together. Our 55th Anniversary Season provided the perfect backdrop to practice empathy, connect with each other, and experience the power of the human voice during a special season of music and celebration. This anniversary also marked a season overflowing with transformation, progress, and accomplishments. We started with a public launch of our new brand, connected with audiences and participants across the community in special concerts, successfully completed a fundraising initiative that propelled the company into the future, and welcomed new friends and partners to our family. On behalf of the hundreds of people who work to bring world-class opera and opera education programs to Minnesota, we couldn’t be more grateful for your continued support. BRAND LAUNCH “OPERA THAT” At its core, opera is visceral, emotional, and inspiring. In the fall of 2017, we created a public campaign to launch our new brand identity called “Opera That.” The campaign matched up a revolving set of descriptive words with a corresponding photo to capture the heart of opera.

DEAD MAN WALKING JANUARY 27–FEBRUARY 3, 2018 Dead Man Walking exemplified the power that operatic storytelling has in connecting to a polarizing social issue and fostering dialogue and discourse to broaden perspectives. Efforts surrounding this production included a performance in a women’s prison with UnPrison Project and a panel discussion at Mitchell Hamline School of Law.

This production of Dead Man Walking was part of the New Works Initiative. A pioneering movement in new opera when it was launched in 2008, Minnesota Opera’s New Works Initiative continues to invigorate the operatic art form with an infusion of both world premieres and remounts of contemporary works, while fulfilling the company’s commitment to artistic growth, leadership, and innovation.

PROJECT OPERA’S ODYSSEY FEBRUARY 9–11, 2018 Project Opera is opera for kids by kids. Each season, students between the fourth and twelfth grades spend 337 hours creating a youth opera. This season’s show was the midwestern premiere of Odyssey and was performed for more than 900 people, including 300 school kids.

RIGOLETTO MARCH 17–31, 2018 A reimagining of this tragic tale featured the opera debut of New York-based Stage Director Austin Regan, a Fargo native who created a refreshed and riveting new Rigoletto seemingly ripped from today’s headlines.

RESIDENT ARTIST PROGRAM 20TH ANNIVERSARY APRIL 7–8, 2018 The 20th anniversary of the Resident Artist Program provided the perfect opportunity to showcase the current roster of artists and alums from past seasons in a special concert at the Ordway Concert Hall.

2017–18 Resident Artists Minnesota Opera’s Resident Artist Program offers a full season of employment for talented artists beginning their professional careers. From late August through May, Resident Artists gain valuable experience in assignments ranging from ensemble, understudy, and comprimario to leading roles in mainstage performances. The program is designed to bridge the gap between an artist’s academic education and their professional career.

FELLOW TRAVELERS JUNE 16–26, 2018 A unique addition to the season, Fellow Travelers brought MN Opera back to Minneapolis for the first time since 1993. Our production of Fellow Travelers at The Cowles Center in June 2018 highlighted a troubling era in LGBTQ history. MN Opera created meaningful partnerships with the LGBTQ community through powerful performances and unique events.

Priti Gandhi was the artistic administrator at San Diego Opera where she advised the general director on casting and artistic budgeting and oversaw all artistic contracting and management. Chief among her accomplishments was serving as a member of the administrative team that helped to save San Diego Opera from near closure in 2014. Gandhi has had a 20-year international opera career, appearing with the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Opera, Seattle Opera, San Diego Opera, Théâtre du Châtelet, the Royal Opera House, Prague Estates Theatre, New York City Opera, Philadelphia Orchestra, and San Francisco Opera. Outside of opera administration, Gandhi has previously served as global network membership manager with The Chopra Center for Wellbeing and promotions office manager for KFMB Radio/TV. Gandhi graduated with a bachelor of arts in communications and a minor in theatre from the University of California, San Diego, has served as a published weekly columnist with The San Diego Union-Tribune, and was an honored alumna and commencement speaker at Thurgood Marshall College at UCSD in 2016. An alumna of young artist programs at Cleveland Opera and San Diego Opera, Gandhi is also an amateur painter and dedicated flamenco dancer. OPTIMIZING INFRASTRUCTURE AND OPERATIONS The enhancement of business operations included structural and safety updates to the MN Opera Center; renovation of offices and public spaces to create a more efficient working environment; and crucial upgrades to IT, finance, and patron management systems.

ESTABLISHING OPERA FOR ALL AGES Educational opportunities were expanded for all life stages. From school programs like Music Out Loud to Voices of Opera, a choral program for people ages 55+, and further investment in the Resident Artist Program, anyone at any age can engage more deeply in opera and opera experiences, creating lasting social and emotional benefits for all participants.

CONTINUING THE NEW WORKS INITIATIVE Creating new operatic works reflects new stories, new voices, and new communities as we strive to sing every story. The Fix, a new baseball opera premieres in March 2019, and coming soon, an opera perfect for multi-generations entitled Edward Tulane, adapted from Minnesota author Kate DiCamillo’s book. CREATING MORE ACCESS TO OPERA Connecting our community to opera is vital to advancing the art form. Additional funding allowed for the creation of an annual FREE season preview at the Ordway, increased participation of opera singers at community events, and the presentation of Fellow Travelers at The Cowles Center, the first MN Opera performance in Minneapolis in more than 25 years.

Through the generosity of the community, the Innovate Now Initiative provided investments in vital foundational areas of the organization ensuring a healthy and vibrant future for Minnesota Opera, the art form we love, and the communities in which we live and serve.
