to the world premiere of Edward Tulane, a brand-new opera by composer

Prestini and librettist Mark Campbell, based on the best-selling novel by Minnesota author Kate DiCamillo! We are proud to present Edward Tulane as part of our New Works Initiative, a pioneering movement in new opera that continues to invigorate the operatic art form and demonstrates our commitment to offering audiences new works that add a distinct American voice to the standard repertory. All of us at MN Opera are excited to continue our commitment to cultivating and enriching our culture of creativity throughout our 60th Anniversary Season by telling new stories in new ways and expanding the definition of opera to include a variety of diverse viewpoints and ideas. We continue our season in late November by welcoming audiences to the Luminary Arts Center with a company first, Handel’s Rinaldo. We kick off 2023 back at the Ordway with a beloved comedy from the Bel Canto period, Donizetti’s The Daughter of the Regiment In March, we will premiere the world’s very first Hmong opera, The Song Poet, based on the memoir of the same title by local author, Kao Kalia Yang, at the Luminary Arts Center. And in May, we close our season at the Ordway with a new production of Mozart’s sharp and otherworldly, Don Giovanni led by an all-female creative team. Whether at the Ordway or the Luminary Arts Center, we hope you’ll join us again this season as we celebrate 60 years of Minnesota Opera!

A MIRACULOUS JOURNEY

ACT I

One Christmas Eve, a young girl named Abilene receives a large china rabbit from her parents as a gift. She instantly falls in love with the rabbit and calls him “Edward Tulane.” For his part, Edward is less demonstrative with his love, a quality criticized by Abilene’s grandmother Pellegrina. Not long after the evening they meet, Edward is separated from Abilene on the deck of an ocean liner. Several years go by, as Edward’s search for love takes him on various adventures: from the bottom of the sea, to the home of a fisherman and his wife, to a junkyard, and to a life on the rails with a drifter and his dog. When a young man named Bryce takes Edward home to console his ailing sister Sarah Ruth, he believes that he has at last found love again.

ACT II

Some weeks later, Bryce runs away from his abusive father after Sarah Ruth has passed away and brings Edward to Memphis where they both work as street performers. Having made enough money for a meal, they eat in a diner and order more food than they can pay for. The owner of the diner attacks Edward and damages his porcelain head. When Edward comes to, he discovers that he is in a doll shop and has been repaired by the shop’s owner, Lucius Clarke. Day after day, Edward waits on a shelf for someone to give him a good home — until a young girl and her mother walk into the shop.

We live in a day and age when some are more inclined to inspire division and hostility than encourage love. So, it comes as a welcome relief to be able to develop a new opera that is so immersed in love. Kate DiCamillo’s award-winning book, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, takes its cue from other classic children’s books like Winnie the Pooh, The Velveteen Rabbit, and the Raggedy Ann and Andy stories. It’s about an inanimate object — a stuffed rabbit named Edward — who takes on a life more akin to the flesh and blood characters that surround him. The magic of this particular story, and perhaps

the reason for its immense popularity, is that Edward goes on a journey from indifference (a quality perhaps worse than hate) to love. And he can only do that once he’s had bad luck. It’s part of the human experience to have misfortune at some point or another. Dark times force us into places from which we sometimes feel we can never return. But it’s only after adversity that we realize struggle has a way of making us wiser, stronger, and alive. More human.

Valuable lessons about love and life come from hardship. This is the journey that Edward takes as he goes from pompous stuffed rabbit to one that understands the value of getting, giving, and forgiving. And the warning

he “harrumphs” at the start of his adventure, imparted by Grandma Pellegrina, that “There can be no happy endings without love,” becomes fully realized and embraced.

Composer Paola Prestini and librettist Mark Campbell have so infused this story with understanding, nuance, and pure joy, that it has become impossible to separate their score from this beautiful, perennial story. Their artistry and Ms. DiCamillo’s classic tale are a perfect match, and something to be grateful for in an unpredictable world.

Composer

Paola Prestini has collaborated with poets, filmmakers, and scientists in large-scale multimedia works that chart her interest in extra-musical themes ranging from the cosmos to the environment. She has created, written, and produced large-scale projects such as the largest communal VR opera, The Hubble Cantata, and the eco-documentary currently on PBS, The Colorado. As an immigrant, many identities, cultures, and values have collided and interlocked within her helping create a synthesis of both unique and universal ideas that naturally manifest into music. On a more granular level, folk melody is infused into the creation of original melodic lines that are deconstructed then supported with complex harmonies, rhythms, counterpoint, and electronic worlds. Her work incorporates improvisation, live electronics, foley, and spatial elements. It is of the moment, political, ambitious, and always curious. Prestini is a Co-Founder of VisionIntoArt, a non-profit new music and interdisciplinary arts production company in New York City. She is also a Co-Founder/Artistic Director of the non-profit music organization National Sawdust.

Librettist

Mark Campbell, whose work has received a Pulitzer Prize and GRAMMY Award, is happy to be premiering his 6th opera with Minnesota Opera; the others he has co-created for the company are Silent Night (Kevin Puts, composer), The Shining (Paul Moravec, composer), Dinner at Eight (William Bolcom, composer), The Manchurian Candidate (Kevin Puts, composer), and Memory Boy (Reinaldo Moya, composer). Mark has created 40 opera librettos, lyrics for seven musicals and text for eight song cycles and three oratorios. His many works include Sanctuary Road, The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs, As One, Elizabeth Cree, Stonewall, Later the Same Evening, A Thousand Acres, The Secret River, The Nefarious, Immoral But Highly Profitable Enterprise of Mr. Burke & Mr. Hare, The Other Room, Today It Rains, Rappahannock County, Stone Soup, Volpone, Bastianello/Lucrezia, and Songs from an Unmade Bed. Other awards include: the first Kleban Foundation Award for Lyricist, two Richard Rodgers Awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Jonathan Larson Foundation Award, a New York Foundation for the Arts Playwriting Fellowship, the first Dominic J. Pelliciotti Award, and a grant from the New York State Council of the Arts. In 2020, Mark created the annual Campbell Opera Librettist Prize, the first award in the history of opera to honor librettists; he funds the award which is administered by OPERA America. He also co-created and funds the True Voice Award to help in the training of transgender singers. After moving to Minnesota from Florida in her twenties, homesickness and a bitter winter helped inspire Because of Winn-Dixie  her first published novel, which, remarkably, became a runaway best seller and snapped up a Newbery Honor. “After the Newbery committee called me, I spent the whole day walking into walls,” she says. “I was stunned. And very, very happy.” Her second novel, The Tiger Rising, went on to become a National Book Award Finalist. Since then, the master storyteller has written for a wide range of ages. She is the author of six books in the Mercy Watson series of early chapter books, which stars a “porcine wonder” with an obsession for buttered toast. The second book in the series, Mercy Watson Goes for a Ride, was named a Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Book by the American Library Association in 2007. DiCamillo, who was named National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature for 2014–2015, says about stories, “When we read together, we connect. Together, we see the world. Together, we see one another.” Born in Philadelphia, the author lives in Minneapolis.

Meet MN Opera

Minnesota Opera’s dedicated staff of artists, craftspeople, and administrators are passionate about bringing worldclass opera and opera education programs to Minnesota. Recently, we sat down with three of them to learn more about what they do at the Opera and why they’re excited for this production of Edward Tulane.

FRANKIE CHARLES

ACCESS & CIVIC ENGAGEMENT ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

What I do:

I manage internal and external community engagement initiatives. This includes events related to the current season’s offerings and the opportunity to find community connection through my own personal identities. I also work with the Tempo program and Tempo Council, facilitating meetings and activating networks for engagement. I develop the Creative Disruptions series, which serves our staff by providing professional development opportunities by giving platforms for historically underrepresented communities to speak about their experiences in the arts and beyond. I also serve as a facilitator for additional one-off programs including but not limited to technical production and LGBTQIA+ experiences in the arts. By training, I am a Technical Director and advocate for the continued improvement of artistic and production spaces.

Why I’m excited for Edward Tulane:

I was around when we had to put it on hold. I had started at MN Opera as the Resident Artist Assistant Technical Director and Edward Tulane was the first big project of my time here. I had a personal hand in drafting/planning many of the scenery pieces used along Edward’s journey, so it will be very rewarding to see those on stage with music and lights.

What I do:

My primary duties include supporting the daily operations of the artistic department team, in both an administrative and artistic function. On any given day, you’ll find me preparing contracts, speaking with agents about artists, organizing auditions, preparing purchase orders, and working in other ways to support the general workflow of the department in a manner which best maximizes department efficiency.

Why I’m excited for Edward Tulane:

I love the air of anticipation and excitement that surrounds each world premiere; but this one is extra special having been cancelled days before the premiere due to the pandemic shutdown. The combination of a beautiful story, exciting music, and gorgeous design — I can’t wait to see this opera finally come to life on stage.

KERRY MASEK

ASSOCIATE PRODUCTION DIRECTOR

What I do:

I lead company-wide scheduling, building timelines for rehearsals, costume fittings, coachings, events, training programs, and overall use of rehearsal facilities at the Minnesota Opera Center. I love solving the daily puzzles of who needs to be where and when. I also manage Minnesota Opera’s rental productions, which are 12+ full packages of scenery, props, costumes, and media regularly presented on opera stages around the country.

Why I’m excited for Edward Tulane:

My favorite part of working at Minnesota Opera is bringing new works to life onstage. I love watching a piece develop through the workshop process in the year or two prior to the premiere. For Edward Tulane, our designers and production team have created an incredibly magical world for Edward to inhabit onstage and I’m excited for audiences to experience this new opera!

Q&A

Describe Edward in three words.

JS This is a tricky one as Edward is definitely one of those characters who changes a lot through the story. But I think he is by nature a good listener. He’s caring and he’s also fiercely loyal.

What are some of the greatest joys and challenges of singing this role?

JS I would say the greatest joy is the fact that no one has performed this role before, so there are no expectations from cast members, the creative team, or the audience. We all get to discover the character together and, in the end, I get to bring him to the stage for the first time ever! In the same vein, that’s a challenge. I‘m constantly trying something new during the rehearsal process. Sometimes it’ll work and sometimes it won’t, so I spend a lot of time outside of rehearsal thinking about what I want to try the next day.

of Stillwater, Minnesota, tenor Jack Swanson has been hailed as one of the most exciting and in-demand new opera stars in the world, having spent the last few years traveling the globe and singing leading roles for prestigious companies like LA Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Oper Frankfurt, and Glyndebourne. All of us at MN Opera, however, are especially excited to have Mr. Swanson here debuting the role of Edward Tulane. To us, he’s not just any young international opera star on the rise; he’s also an alumnus of Minnesota Opera’s inaugural youth training program, Project opera, and we’re so happy to have him back where it all started. Recently, he sat down with us to talk about the process of creating a new character, how his time in Project Opera has influenced his current career, and what it’s like to finally be back singing on his home turf.

Is there a particular theme in this piece that resonates with you and that you hope will resonate with audiences?

JS “When you truly listen to people, compassion becomes inevitable.” What I mean by that is it’s easy for us to see people, how they dress, or who they choose to spend their time with and jump to conclusions before hearing their stories. Edward meets all kinds of people during his “Miraculous Journey” and because he is a great listener, he becomes much more compassionate as the journey goes on.

When did you first know that you wanted to be a professional opera singer?

JS I knew I wanted to be an opera singer the first day I stepped into rehearsals for La bohème with MN Opera in 2010. I was a part of the chorus and singing the part of the Prune Seller. I’ll never forget the thrill of being on that stage, the people who were a part of that show, and

the music itself. All of those things ultimately led to me pursuing an opera career.

We’re very excited to have you here for a number of reasons, but especially because you’re an alum of our Project Opera program. What is one of your favorite memories from your time in Project Opera?

JS To be honest, some of my favorite moments were just talking with my fellow Project Opera friends about singing, technique, and our favorite operas. One memory that sticks with me was how much fun I had performing in the Opera Scenes program. I sang Tamino in a very funny duet from The Magic Flute

Are there things you learned in Project Opera that you still use today?

JS I would say that one of the biggest lessons I learned from Project Opera is to be prepared! Preparation is key when it comes to a long and fulfilling career. Another lesson I learned is to always BE ON TIME!

creation of a new work is a major undertaking that involves a huge number of artists working over a long period of time. For the performers, it’s months of learning and memorizing for two multi-day piano workshops and one weeklong orchestra workshop before rehearsals and opening night. For the composer and librettist, it’s the culmination of around three years of work. And for the artistic team at MN Opera, the opening night of a new opera can be years in the making.

Our extensive workshop process — the road map for creating a new opera honed over years of practice — fosters creativity and artistic excellence, developing artists in the process. Thankful for the time and space to tackle a project of this size and scope, Juilliard-trained Edward Tulane composer Paola Prestini described the workshop process to Opera News as “a real opportunity to learn the ropes.”

Expressing the gratitude for the ways that the workshop process has helped her develop her own artistic language, Prestini continued, “The only way you train to write big work is by doing it. You become more attuned to your language, to timing, to all sorts of

That’s the lifelong school that you’ve subscribed to if you’re going to be a practicing artist.”

Air Quality

The Ordway’s air system brings in fresh air from the outside to help limit the spread of airborne viruses like COVID-19. In addition, several updates have been made to further improve air safety inside the Ordway.

• Upgrading the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) filtration to high-efficiency MERV 13 filters, following Minnesota Department of Health best practices.

• Added HVAC controls and sensors to improve air velocity within the building and provide additional monitoring and control of the system by our facility engineers.

• Removed forced air hand dryers in all restrooms, which have been shown to disperse a high quantity of bacteria into the air and replaced them with paper towel dispensers.

Cleaning and Sanitizing

In addition to the robust cleaning practices that were already in place, the Ordway has:

• Increased the frequency of cleaning throughout the building for high-touch areas in the front of house and back of house areas of the Ordway.

• Added state-of-the-art practices including selfcleaning anti-microbial covers in high-touch areas where possible.

• Set up hand-sanitizing stations throughout the venue.

• Trained all employees in critical hand washing and cleaning guidelines.

• Replaced waste receptacles with open top units so guests can throw out items without touching any surfaces.
