editor's note

issue no. 3 Everyone has a personal style evolution throughout the year as the seasons change. I love the dramatic change in apparel when summer finally hits. The boots and jackets turn into summer dresses and sandals. I hope you all have amazing goals set for yourselves this summer. It doesn’t matter if it’s a creative goal or a personal one; if there is something you’ve been dreaming of doing, start making it happen. Just like we update our clothes when the seasons change, we should update and realign our goals. My vision for this issue is to inspire you for the upcoming season and to help you see your own style evolution. Stay inspired, and keep your personal goals and dreams in mind. Anything is possible with a little hard work and determination! As with every issue, I want to thank all the contributors involved. I also want to give a special thanks to Rose McGowan for being apart of this issue. She embodies such an amazing style evolution and I am thrilled to have her apart of MINT. Thank you to continuing and new readers alike. Happy summer!

Editor in Chief, Courtney Roxanne

Margaux Brooke photographs - Timothy Rosado stylist - Isabel Vargas makeup artist - Raul Otero using MAC hair - Sheri Pinto words - Krystle Bryant Rising model Margaux Brooke is a gem in the fashion industry and proof that hard work pays off. She recently caught up with MINT to discuss her career, her experience on Oxygen's The FACE, and her advice to models just starting out.

As a contestant on The FACE you were actually considered a “veteran.” How did you break into the modeling industry at such a young age? My mom was actually the one who got me in to modeling. She heard an ad on the radio for an agency in Atlanta, GA looking for child models and brought me in. I was signed that day and never looked back. You worked with three of the world’s top supermodels/mentors on The FACE. What would fans be surprised to know about your experiences with each of them (Naomi, Coco, and Karolina) behind the scenes? Each supermodel mentor has a side of themselves that they showed on camera and a different side they showed off-camera. For instance, although Naomi came off as very “fiery” most of the time during the episodes, there were occasions not always shown where she would be very motherly towards all of us. She would show concern and make sure we were okay through out the taping of the show. Karolina was very poised and professional most of the time on camera but during down times she was actually one of the funniest, goofiest people on set. I remember backstage at the Zac Posen show for the last episode she was carrying her iPad on her shoulder like an ‘80s boom box singing Whitney Houston at the top of her lungs. I honestly can’t think about what would surprise fans about Coco, what you saw on the show is how she is all the time. She’s warm and funny, relatable and ridiculous but at the same time she’s very competitive and wanted us to win so bad. She was never a diva or had any ulterior motives. Coco was just Coco all the time and that was one of the best parts of having her as a coach. She felt and reacted to every situation just like we all did on Team Coco. Do you think reality series such as The FACE and Top Model are the best outlets for aspiring models? I think The Face and Top Model are great jumping off points to help aspiring models get exposure on a mass level but you can’t really grasp how much work and dedication this career requires without hitting the pavement day after day for a real modeling agency. Aspiring models need to experience what it’s

really like to go to castings every day, live through the constant rejection, as well as the occasional gratification that comes with booking a job. It’s a very difficult career mentally and physically and there is no way to really understand and appreciate that without actually living and doing it in the real world. What has been the highlight of your modeling career thus far? I feel like I’ve had a few jobs that I’m particularly proud of, for instance my first commercial was for JCPenney and it aired during the Oscars in 2011 and the campaign came out in all of the magazines the following week. Vegas Rated magazine in October 2011 was my first cover. Then my Tide campaign came out in 2012, which was very exciting because on top of it being in the magazines it was my first billboard ad and I got to go see it on the side of Hollywood & Highland. But I guess I would have to say the highlight of my career thus far has been Target Style naming me their “model of the month” alongside the release of the campaign I shot with them in New York in the beginning of the year. I feel like all of my hard work is paying off and it just pushes me harder to succeed further in the future. Although you have been very successful in booking major campaigns, modeling can be very competitive. How do you handle rejection in this industry? It’s part of the job. I’ve been dealing with rejection for years at this point and while I sometimes believe I can do a job just as well if not better than another model I have to remember that it is the clients preference. It’s not necessarily my ability that isn’t booking me that job but rather the client has a particular look or vibe that they want for that particular job. It’s the same way for every model, even Coco Rocha, who can literally model anything and everything, might not be what the client is looking for in that instance and that’s okay. There will always be another job available, I just have to keep going for it and the bookings will come. Who are your top 3 favorite designers? I don’t really have a top 3, more like a top 50 but I’m a big fan of Versace, Burberry and locally I really love Skingraft, they make amazing leather pieces.

What are your career interests outside of modeling? I’ve actually started looking in to acting as a possible career. While modeling is a blast and is the job I grew up loving, I’ve really enjoyed the couple of acting related jobs I’ve booked like commercials and music videos. I play the female lead in an upcoming music video for The Maine and it required me to use a different side of myself. It’s one thing to bring out certain emotions for a still modeling shot but an entirely different thing to pretend like the camera isn’t there and to act out a serious scene with another person you’ve just met. It’s a different kind of challenge that I have a great appreciation for and that I want to explore further. We hear you’re an avid rock climber, which can be a physically and mentally demanding sport. What do you enjoy the most about rock climbing? Rock climbing is just one of those sports where you really have to push yourself physically and mentally as mentioned. If you mess up, you fall, albeit in my case there is usually a padded floor to land on or a rope to catch me but the whole rush of climbing is trying to make it to the top. I don’t want to fall, even though I’ll be safe, because I want to conquer the climb and feel the sense of accomplishment that comes with grabbing that last hold at the finish. It’s like no other sport I’ve ever done. Plus the climbing community is so small and full of such amazing people. I’ve never experienced a sport that is based on individual performance while at the same time having all of my competition cheering me on. It really is an amazing and special sport that I will continue to do as long as I can. Fans are obsessed with your signature precisely cut bang! How do maintain your gorgeous strands? Hahaha! I get my bangs cut every couple of weeks. You’ll know if it’s been awhile if they’re below my eyebrows. But I have two people one in Orange County and one in LA that I can go to if I need an emergency bang trim. Other than frequent trimming I also put oil on my ends after every shower to keep my hair shiny and healthy. As a model, we see you wearing everything from Forever 21 to Zac Posen, but how would you describe your personal style? My style is very casual and comfortable. On a day to day basis I’m almost always in a tank top and jeans but I definitely like to mix in the occasional urban or punk vibe by throwing on a leather jacket or some Doc Martens or toping my look off with a Dimepiece snapback or beanie.

52 MINT ISSUE No. 3

When it comes to events I definitely like to dress up. Sometimes I’ll go girly and wear a bright colored dress and heels or I’ll go the complete opposite and slick my hair back, wear a suite and rock the androgynous look for the night. I guess it all just depends on who I want to be that day. My style is always changing and evolving. Which trends this season are you loving and wearing? I really love the crazy prints that are trending this season. I’m usually dressed mostly in black so it’s exciting to step out of my comfort zone and wear clothing that’s a little loud for a change. I’m also really enjoying the geometric cuts, that combined with the monochromatic trend it’s a very ‘60s season, I love it. What is your ultimate dream modeling job? What brand or person would you like to work with? I mean the list is endless. I’d love to shoot with Steven Miesel, Bruce Weber, Terry Richardson. As far as designers/brands go I would love to work with Versace, Burberry (if I were English or if they started using American models) but I think the most fun would be to work with Jean Paul Gaultier. His designs are so out there with creativity, they’re also innovation and imaginative. I think it would be a huge honor and seriously fun time if I got to do something with him. What advice would you give to those pursuing a modeling career? My advice for aspiring models is to realize how much work this career takes. It isn’t like in the movies where models won’t wake up for less than $10,000 a day, shoot for a couple hours and then return to their big house in the hills with a hot pool boy fanning them with a banana leaf. It’s a lot of driving to castings day after day, constant rejection, long hours of shooting in often-terrible weather conditions and then waiting for months to get paid. But it is also unlike any other job out there. Modeling offers opportunities to travel all over the world and meet incredibly talented and unique people, wear amazing clothes and create amazing and inspiring images that you will have for the rest of your life. The bottom line is- this is an amazing career but you have to really want it. If you have the looks, the passion and the drive there’s nowhere you can’t go with a modeling career.

"W

hen I commit to doing it, I've done some swell things” Rose states in a recent interview. And indeed the star has had an amazing career. When asked about her memorable career moments, she recalls, “The Doom Generation, Charmed, Planet Terror, and working with Brian De Palma are some highlights. I also enjoyed Once Upon A Time and think it'd be fun to work with that cast & crew again. They were lovely.” However, acting isn’t Rose’s only passion. She tells us about an upcoming feature she has directed. “It's a short film called Dawn, produced by RSA/Blackdog. It's a big step for me. The film is set in 1961. I wanted to explore the halcyon period of early 1960’s girl culture through the eyes of a fifteen year old, Dawn. Her emotional state is completely molded by her society, mom, and women's magazines. They are both telling her what kind of girl she's supposed to be, and that programming has consequences for her. Doing this film has been really important for me, both as a director and an actress. I've already found a feature to direct and am developing that now.” Rose isn't just taking on any project, turning down five offers in a row. “I've been waiting for something that makes me want to bother. I'm sure it's annoying to people I work with. I just haven't responded to any of them. I've gotten to a point where if I don't respond, I don't bother. I'd rather do things that challenge me and make me feel fulfilled. Right now, that's directing.”

In between all her projects, Rose spends her time wandering the globe and enjoying life. The actress is also a beautiful singer, and her next stop is Nashville to record vocal tracks. “I'm doing some 1930’s songs with 1960’s instrumentation,” stated Rose. Amidst all her talents, Rose filled us in on her favorite beauty tips and how she keeps her beautiful complexion glowing. “My favorite beauty tips are no smoking, limited sun and using sunblock. Boring but true. Also, I use my lip-gloss on my nails if I don't have a manicure. It gives them a nice shine in a pinch if I'm manicure-less.” She also uses her own skincare line called The Only. “I’ve been using it for the past five years. It has taken a long time to formulate it. A website is being built now and then it'll be ready for sale. So exciting.” Rose describes her style as a mix between “pop and elegance,” jokingly stating, “I’m hoping the two meet and I don't look like I have multiple personalities.” She has some favorite go-to outfits, dressing to suit the mood she is in. “I love jumpsuits for evening, tuxedos, tailored shorts with a bodysuit underneath, and summer dresses.”
