This project came as a collective effort to slow down our minds, increase our opportunities to sweat and improve our overall health and wellness habits. We were tired of being too busy for ourselves and quite frankly, just tired. We didn’t want to respond, “Fine,” or “Busy,” any longer when people asked us how we were. So, we decided to do what any progressive person from the Okanagan would do...we went to the experts. We picked their brains and made lists. We talked to inspiring people and made promises with ourselves. We audited our pantries and our minds. We don’t settle. And, neither should you. So dive deep into the wisdom spread out in this guide; dog-ear the pages, start cooking healthful meals, get together with a workout buddy and make a plan. Becoming your best self is a process of excavation. It is a shedding, a coming into yourself. It is an account of what’s working and what’s not. Be brave. Be strong. Be your best. you’ve been feeling blah, meh or underwhelmed, it’s time to think about indulging in some well-needed self-care. Artist and writer Ashleigh Brilliant said, “Sometimes the most urgent and vital thing you can possibly do is take a complete rest.” At Mint, we endorse complete rests to regenerate our creative souls. Depending on our output, we may require more or less. Sometimes we fuel projects on ideas, coffee and adrenaline alone, which always deliver beautiful results, but sometimes at the expense of our health. Take it from us, take time for you.

Our world is extremely accessible, which is great if you need to reach your aunt in China or your son in Nepal; but sometimes we are too accessible. Work bleeds into family life and social media steals time from sleep. Try spending one day per month without your phone or at very least your notifications turned on. If you journal, set reminders, use Sticky Notes or a wall calendar (it’s okay, we don’t judge), schedule in some selflove. Get a massage or go for a float. Get your yoga on or take a meditation class. Consider the time spent an investment in you. Organize. I am guilty of putting off what is not a priority until I have more time. What can happen though is that you have a stack of emails that need your attention, papers to be filed, laundry to put away, seasonal items to box up – all of which can weigh you down. Free your mind of mental clutter and your world; it will open space for you to let more of your light shine.

Do more of what makes you happy. If you’re passionate about cooking, then browse through the grocery store scouring the aisles for unique ingredients. Read recipes; go wine tasting with a friend or take a hike with your pooch. Run, spin or read your way to a smile. And lastly, snuggle. Seriously. Love the people who fill your heart up with joy, touch their little faces, hug a friend, go back to bed with your person. Connect with your heart, share your energy with your tribe and give people you love the gift of your touch. Happy all things self-love. Now start a list of the many things you have in your life to be thankful for, block out time for you and break free from the mundane. **cyber hug**

I’m pretty sure that the word ‘dietitian’ conjures images of white lab coats and food guides for the majority of people. That’s not me. Raised in the Okanagan, I have been surrounded by the freshest and most beautiful food since I can remember. Our family LOVES good food, and my sweet Mom and Ukrainian Granny had me in the kitchen at a very young age teaching me everything they know: I baked my first loaf of bread when I was 10 years old! I am now married to an amazing man who shares my passion for good food and a nice glass of wine, and am blessed with two sweet sons (my four year old is already rolling up his sleeves in the kitchen, I love it!). My nutrition philosophy embraces moderation and quality without deprivation. You will find that my recipes and nutrition advice centre around sustainable and enjoyable healthy eating. Salad Ingredients 2 cups spinach 2 cups kale, torn into bite sized pieces 3/4 cup chickpeas (drained) 3/4 cup cooked and cooled quinoa 1 ripe avocado, diced 1 red pepper, diced 1 yellow pepper, diced 1/3 cup pumpkin seeds 1/3 cup chopped roasted almonds 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese (optional) Dressing Ingredients 2 garlic cloves, crushed Juice of 1 lemon (fresh only) 2 tsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp sugar or honey 3 tbsp red wine vinegar 2/3 cup canola oil Salt & pepper to taste Directions In a shallow large serving bowl, place the salad ingredients in sections (however you wish!). In a mason jar or tall cup, stir together the garlic cloves, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, sugar or honey and vinegar. Â Stir together. Add the canola oil in a stream while whisking (or use an Aerolatte, this is ALL I use for making salad dressing, it perfectly emulsifies the dressing). Taste and add salt and pepper if you wish. Pour the salad dressing over the salad and serve! 28

Drink water high in PH. Consider upping your H20 game and opting for six to eight glasses of alkaline water with a PH higher than 7 every day. Reusable water bottles filled with filtered tap water for spring water is best. We know about 60 percent of the body is made up of water. Drinking adequate amounts helps to stave off dehydration, transport vital nutrients to various organs and regulate our body’s temperature. So do yourself a favour and drink water that’s worthy.

Approach your abode as an urban utopia. Enhance your Zen by adding candles and soft colours. Have comfy throws near by and lots of natural light. And, as much as you are able, enhance your space with plants. They generate fresh air, swallow up carbon dioxide and add a natural element to any room. Do your research. Some plants are better for bedrooms while others may be more suited to social gathering spots because they give off succulent scents. Consider what you need more of and then add it to your haven, room-by-room.

Instead choose hand soaps, lotions, as well as make-up and body products derived from plants; opt for sulphate and paraben-free products. Lastly, consider and invest in a filter for your shower. Modern civilization does a great job of removing pollutants and contaminants from our city water systems. Unfortunately, our tap water often contains added chlorine and fluoride to kill viruses and bacteria. In other words, sterile, clean water does come at a price. But, it doesn’t have to. Water your pores with water free from chemicals that can cause cancer, mimics estrogen or just leave your skin feeling dry and itchy. Charcoal filters are a great way to get clean, soft skin from water that won’t cause you harm.

or over 20 years, I have been proudly taking care of the oral health of our community in Kelowna. Over the years, I have heard many misconceptions about what keeps our smiles healthy. Here are the answers to some of the questions that patients often ask me.
Do I really need to see my dentist twice a year? How often you go for a dental exam ultimately depends on your individual health needs. If you smoke, have a history of gum disease, or have any other health problems such as diabetes, you may need to see your dentist more regularly. The goal is to detect small problems early. A simple filling at the right time or identifying a cavity early could spare you from the pain and the cost of a root canal or tooth extraction down the road. A small problem caught early, can go a long way to keep your smile healthy.
Does a healthy mouth affect my overall health? The phrase “healthy mouth, healthy you” really is true — and backed by growing scientific evidence. If you suffer from gum disease and it goes undetected, the bacteria generated in your mouth can actually spread infection around the rest of your body. Dental examinations even have the potential to spot nondental health problems in advance. Osteoporosis, vitamin deficiencies, diabetes and oral cancer often bear symptoms that appear in the mouth.
Next time you are scheduled for a hygiene appointment, don’t just think of it as a cleaning, consider it to be part of a full body tune up!

coconut black bean Ingredients 1 14 oz can of black beans, drained & rinsed 1/2 cup cocoa 1/4 tsp salt 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla 1 tsp instant espresso powder 1/2 cup sugar 2 tbsp honey 2 tbsp almond milk 1 tsp baking powder 1/4 cup melted butter or coconut oil 1/3 cup shredded unsweetened coconut 1/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional) Directions Preheat oven to 350°F and line a 9” x 9” baking pan with parchment paper. Combine all ingredients except the coconut and chocolate chips in a blender and mix until smooth. Pour the batter into the prepared pan, sprinkle with the coconut and chocolate chips, and bake for approximately 40-50 minutes or until the brownies are set. Remove from the oven and let it rest in the pan for at least 20 minutes before cutting.
