OKANAGAN MOM STYLE Okanagan Mom Style was started as a fun way to share outfits with others and show that just because we are busy moms, it doesn’t mean we can’t be fashionable doing it! We all live in the Okanagan and between us have 14 children ranging from one to sixteen years. Our children (whoever is willing) take the majority of the photos unless we happen to be out with each other or we resort to a selfie. It has been a fun way for us to stay connected. Follow @okanagamomstyle on Instagram to see our favourite looks!

DO MORE TO
Lift Your Spirits BY ANGELA O’BRIEN AT ESTEEM LINGERIE
I am a professional bra fitter... It’s the line I toss out at business functions when I get the inevitable question, “what you do for a living?” Reactions are always fascinating. They usually range from cliché jokes from the men on how they already have the expertise to do my job, to women being intrigued, yet fearful I have x-ray vision and am passing harsh judgement on their underwear. My favorite reaction has always been the customer that is proud to announce that we have lifted her spirits! - which usually results in the flashing of at least a beautiful bra strap. At its basic level, a bra should fit like a second skin, support and move with the body without feeling any more obtrusive than any other piece of your clothing. As a fitter, I know that there are 22 fit points on a bra and different for every woman. There is no one universal bra that fits every woman and trying to stuff a woman into a mold doesn’t usually work. Also contained in that bra is usually a part of a woman’s body confidence, self-esteem, perspectives on beauty and sexuality. Add to that a whole lot of preconceived ideas on what will or won’t work for them based on modern media “marketing” rather than road tested knowledge. Finding the perfect bra is akin to hunting for a unicorn! The hardest part for me as a fitter, is watching women putting their self care dead last in the priority list and worse, harshly and unnecessarily judging themselves in the change room. The best part of my job is when I can work with a woman to help her understand what is a great fit for her unique and beautiful body! When we can open up the possibilities of different fits, styles, colours that work to make the woman feel great, beautiful, alluring or simply comfortable in her own skin - EVERYDAY! I’m joyful when woman aren’t wasting their money on multiple bras that have no hope of fitting them and replacing them with 2-3 quality bras that will serve them! And if we can laugh and giggle while we do it - all the better. When my daughter was six she saw a gorgeous confection of lacy spicy lingerie on a mannequin in our window. I saw her pondering it and finally she looked up at me and said, “I can rock that!” Wisdom of a child - she is my role model, instead of harshly judging herself and being so sure others are judging her; she simply rocks it! Bottom line: A professional bra fitting at Esteem Lingerie will do more than lift your spirits!

FALL FOOTWEAR
BY SHANDI SCHWARTZ OF STRUT FOOTWEAR
From the classic riding boot to the more fashion forward over the knee boot, this boot will take you from day to night in a heartbeat. Watch the heel height in this category; keeping it to a lower chunkier heel makes them an easy choice for all day comfort. Stretch, goring and back-zips can be great tools to accommodate the more athletic calf. Tall boots look fabulous with skinny jeans, leggings, and dresses with opaque hose.

This look is so strong. You can explore varying heel heights and cuts around the ankle. Suedes are a fabulous choice for the ankle boot, and look for extra detailing with zippers, studs, perforations, tassels and burnished edges. Must-have colors are black, taupe or greige; any one of these will go with everything from denim to dresses.
This little devil is an absolute must and comfort is the name of the game here. Choose a classic ballet flat or a pointed toe loafer, and this is where you can have fun with color. Reds, metallics, and prints can be very neutral and are so much more interesting than the safe and predictable black or brown. Look for flats with arch support, cushioning and a rubber sole to keep those tootsies supported all day long.

sneakers Oh there are so many options for this little run around companion. White sole, slip on, lace-up, zip-up, sporty, sophisticated, and the list goes on. If your fashion sense is more classic, look for a leather sneaker with a combination of materials such as patent and perforated. If you are a little more sporty, a white sole is a terrific choice. Tapered or pointed toe boxes offer a chic spin on this ever-so-strong altheisure movement. Travelling? This shoe will be a dream as it goes with everything from little dresses to yoga wear. VIONIC

This category of footwear is all business; it has one job, which is to go with everything. Keep it timeless with a closed-toe 2 ½ to 3” heel. Adding a platform is always helpful as it provides the height, without creating such an angle on the foot, which is what puts the extra pressure on the ball of your foot. Black or nude are the best colors for a classic pump.

COLLECTIONS BULLE
This one depends on your outdoor activities, but there are some basic components to look for. Waterproof or water resistant, weather rating to -20*C, cozy lining and an aggressive rubber tread should be on the checklist. Then, have some fun with unique embellishments such as fur, rivets, buckles and zippers. There it is, girls. Now go and bust out those big ol’ sweaters and assess your current fall footwear. Determine which categories may be lacking or need updating. Once you have the essential six, you can then have a ball adding in more color, texture, and heel heights for even more fabulous looks. And remember, give a girl the right pair of shoes and she can conquer the world! *Don’t forget to take care of those beautiful shoes and boots and protect them against water and salt with a good all protector spray.

t is likely part of your daily routine. You reach into the bathroom cabinet, choose a product and lather it on your legs, arms or face. You think you’re treating and nourishing your skin to give it a healthy, natural glow, but have you ever flipped the bottle over and read the list of ingredients that are contained within your skin care product?
I
The truth of the matter is, there are many cosmetics available on the market that are made using harsh and carcinogenic chemicals. Some products may contain a portion of natural products, but the unnatural ingredients often outweigh the good. With the technological advances and knowledge we have in today’s world, we are able to bring back the ancient pharmacopoeia of Ayurveda, using a system that emphasizes the purity of the product. Cannabis, as used in Ayurvedic formulations, is one of the natural ingredients that is starting to surface in more and more products. Research has shown that its medicinal properties have multiple benefits when applied topically or used internally. However, not all of the products that are being created for the market are legal, nor are they effective therapeutically. And, that is exactly why Penny Green and Krystal Pineo wanted to create skin and body care products that would offer consumers an all-natural ingredient line, literally providing food for your skin. “We noticed that there were a lot of black market products out there containing cannabis, which are not chemical free. So, we decided that we wanted to try to make something that was more natural and nourishing for the skin from the inside out,” said Krystal Pineo, Co-Founder, Director. As a result, The Yield Growth Corp. was born. This is the parent company to a beautiful line of ethically crafted skin care products under the brand Urban Juve. As people are becoming accustomed to buying and using cannabis-infused products with Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD) for pain management, cancer treatment and general skin care, Urban Juve has been created to meet the demand by making products available that are conscientiously created, embracing the principles of the ancient Ayurvedic medicine system. “Our company is developing a line of cosmetic and therapeutic formulations which will comply with all of the legal regulations of Health Canada before we launch and scale our brand,” said Penny Green, Co-Founder, President, CEO, and Director.

The Yield Growth Corp. has collaborated with a natural health professional who has studied Ayurveda and Chinese medicine to develop products with the highest integrity. She is originally from India and recognized as an ordained lineage holder and scholar of the Vedic Science of Ayurveda. She brings with her the genealogy of the mystical origins of Ayurveda literature with a vast knowledge in food medicine pharmacopoeia, a classical form of Ayurveda. She has an extensive knowledge of root and plant medicine for chronic illnesses, such as cancer, fibromyalgia and many skin conditions. The Yield Growth Corp. bought the rights to all of her products and brought her on board to further develop them for scalable production. “It was important to our formulations creator to be true to the natural process from start to finish. Our company searched until we found manufacturers in BC who were willing to work with her vision to ensure that every element of the process was as natural as possible. Our intention was to avoid all chemical processes and additives,” said Penny. “We were so impressed with the quality of these products. We quickly got Health Canada on board and now have 25 Health Canada registrations. We wanted our products to be pure and natural, the best that they could be for the consumer,” said Krystal. There are 55 cosmetic and therapeutic products in development in the Urban Juve line; a select number of initial key products will be available for sale this fall through e-commerce and then in the retail market space in the new year. More products will be launched as they pass through research and development stages to meet all of the Health Canada requirements. The comprehensive product line includes facial oils, moisturizers, cleansers, massage oils, anti-aging serum, topical pain management, sunscreen, sensual oils and many more. The majority of the products use high-grade essential oils infused with hemp root oil, derived from a proprietary extraction process. “Hemp root is not part of the plant that is commonly used, however, historically it has been used for treating ailments. The hemp root oil is believed to contain a complex mixture of pharmaceutical ingredients, which include terpenes, ketones and a 22
MINT Kelowna
dozen active cannabinoids. The method of extraction gives us a high-quality hemp root oil, which we use for an entourage effect. After all of the research, we have filed a provisional U.S. patent on our extraction process,” said Penny. Another aspect that makes Urban Juve a unique and powerful product line is its basis in classical Ayurveda philosophy, which consists of the five elements of nature: water, air, ether, fire and earth. It will provide a guideline to customers who will be able to choose a product that suits their particular needs. Customers will be able to identify their individual body bio and choose products that will be best suited to them. The products treat three different body bios - Vitalize (Air & Ether), Align (Earth & Water) and Balance (Fire & Water). “There’s a real trend toward customization and the principles behind the traditional apothecary that we’re bringing back with a twist. This philosophy will appeal to young, modern consumers who are concerned about taking care of themselves and their bodies. Customized solutions are what people are looking for,” said Penny. Investors have taken a keen interest in the wellness industry as it is related to cannabis. The Yield Growth Corp. has been successful in raising capital
funds for their project and have entered into $2.8 million in licensing agreements for their products. Yield Growth currently has distribution in Canada, the U.S., and Italy. They have granted the exclusive right to distribute Urban Juve products in Italy to licensing partner, CROP Infrastructure Corp. (CSE:CROP, OTC:CRXPF) with the intention to infuse the products with cannabis properties for retail sale. “We are creating a global brand. We have the highest quality ingredients and exceptional products. Everything that we’re doing in terms of our branding and high-quality packaging is designed to launch an international brand. We are making a difference in the wellness industry by introducing an authentic product line for a genuine experience,” said Krystal. The Yield Growth Corp. is hosting a VIP investors event in Kelowna, British Columbia. Contact info@ yieldgrowth.com for an invite to the event or for distribution opportunities.

Imagine someone with thick, shiny, flowing hair. The person you’ve just imagined is probably fairly youthful-looking, right? The truth is that fine, sparse hair ages the appearance as much as wrinkles on the face. You may be surprised to know that the cause of both of these signs of aging lies in skin health.

hat’s correct, thick, healthy hair comes from a healthy scalp with lively hair follicles. For both men and women, follicles can shrink, go dormant, and eventually die. The good news is, it takes time for a follicle to permanently stop producing. So, if you’ve noticed your hair thinning, take heart! Your hair follicles may simply be dormant, or have shrunken in size, producing hair strands that are so fine that they break quickly after growing. So, how can you revive those hair follicles before they stop producing forever? •
Increase nutrition beneath the scalp.
•
Increase blood flow to the follicles.
The De Pieri Clinic uses a unique combination of two revolutionary treatments to address both of these needs.
average of 3 treatments. Often, even after just one treatment, patients report seeing less hair falling into the sink or on the brush. The second step, and the key to increasing blood flow to the scalp, is called Carbossitherapy. The De Pieri Clinic is unique in offering this all-natural treatment, which stimulates the concentration of oxygen by a series of injections to the area. Carbossitherapy alone has been shown to stimulate hair growth. In combination with PRP, it augments the treatment’s beneficial effects. This combination approach: •
Increases blood supply to hair follicles.
•
Increases thickness of the hair shaft.
•
Triggers and maintains the growth phase.
•
Decreases hair loss.
First, with regards to follicle nutrition, cosmetic providers at the clinic are thrilled with the results they’ve seen from PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatments for both skin and hair.
Any discomfort with either of these treatments is minimized by the use of topical numbing, as well as a hand-held “Vibrata” device during application.
Doctors have utilized PRP medically, to speed wound healing and strengthen skin tissue. In cosmetic applications, this treatment (also known as “the Vampire Facial”) can augment, or in some cases replace, Botox ® and filler treatments.
Finally, for a positive experience with any treatment, proper diagnosis and treatment by a physician is recommended. As with any aesthetic concern, there may be underlying physical factors which should be addressed.
PRP uses your own healthy blood cells to re-generate dormant cells. In the case of hair loss, it can actually jumpstart dormant follicles back into the growth phase!
Once you’re ready to take the step toward treatment, it’s important to choose the right provider. An experienced physician can ensure your procedure is as comfortable, safe, and effective as possible.
One PRP treatment takes less than 30 minutes, and requires no downtime. Improvement in hair thickness occurs after an
Then, prepare to enjoy a significant and lasting improvement in hair volume!

STRATEGIES TO MANAGE
Anxiety and Stress BY TRICIA VELTRI AT CORE LEVEL HEALING THERAPY
Anxiety is becoming an epidemic in our culture. According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of Canada, “one in four Canadians will have at least one anxiety disorder in their lifetime.” This can be debilitating as people often experience sleepless nights, preoccupation of negative repetitive thoughts, or feel a sense of dread, worry or terror. Along with the psychological symptoms, anxiety can present physically as nausea, sweating, diarrhea, shortness of breath, racing heartbeat, and feeling constantly on edge.
28
MINT Kelowna
M
ost of us want a quick fix because living with anxiety can be unbearable. However, before you run to the doctor and ask for a “magic pill” that will ultimately just mask the symptoms, consider treating anxiety with a holistic approach. In order to treat anxiety, I consider your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Here are five strategies you can implement on your own.
LEARN TO SAY NO You have a thousand things on the go! Running from one appointment to another, over committing yourself, saying yes when you really want to say no, you are running on
pure adrenalin, it is no wonder why your mind won’t shut off and you feel completely overwhelmed! If you are a people pleaser this can be hard to do, as you fear rejection and abandonment. However, when you say no, you are really saying “yes” to yourself and your wellbeing. As a rule of thumb, I say listen to your body, if it is not a “hell yeah”, it’s a no.
PRACTICE SELF-CARE First things first, self-care is not selfish! I recommend to all my clients to take at least 30 minutes of nonnegotiable self-care time each and every day. This could be meditating in the morning or night, exercising, yoga, reading a book, taking a bath, or spending time in nature. Ensure that you are getting enough sleep at night, slow down, take some deep breaths, and limit social media time.
LISTEN TO YOUR BODY Sometimes anxiety can be a symptom of an underlying physical issue going on such as hormone imbalances, vitamin/nutrient deficiencies, chronic diseases, metabolic
issues, side effects from medications, or dietary issues. I highly recommend seeing a naturopath or doctor to rule out any physical causes of anxiety.
WATCH YOUR THOUGHTS Dr. Wayne Dyer says ‘you create your thoughts, your thoughts create your intentions, and your intentions create your reality.’ Our thoughts have incredible power over us and anxiety is only FEAR, which stands for False Evidence Appearing Real. Begin to take an inventory of your thought patterns; do you have any evidence to back them up?
KNOW WHEN TO ASK FOR HELP If your anxiety is debilitating, is causing you to feel hopeless, is a result of trauma or PTSD, or is causing extreme panic of fear, it is time to reach out for help. Therapy such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) are effective treatments for anxiety. You can visit my website at www.corelevelhealingtherapy.com for more information on how I can help.

Vitamin IV’s deliver high-quality nutrients that are easily absorbed into the body – because the nutrients are delivered directly into the blood stream and don’t have to pass through the digestive tract, they are absorbed into your cells much more efficiently. This is great for those who are concerned that they are not absorbing nutrients well from their diet for various reasons. When you receive a Vitamin IV Treatment, you sit comfortably while a sterile IV line is started and your custom formulated nutrient cocktail is infused. During this time, you can relax, read a book, chat with other patients, nap, or simply relax - your choice! We use only the safest and most advanced nutrient therapies to keep you feeling your best and we custom tailor your nutrients to your individual needs. BENEFITS OF VITAMIN IV THERAPY For those who push their bodies through a mentally and/or physically taxing lifestyle - such as intense workouts, challenging workdays, or a busy fast paced
lifestyle - they require higher levels of nutrients to repair tissue damage, maintain mental focus, and restore energy. Each cell has a higher nutrient requirement in order to perform at a higher level of function, and uses nutrients at a faster rate than can often be absorbed in our digestive system from our diet. By administering the nutrients directly into the bloodstream, our cells are able to effectively use the nutrients they require for optimal function and healing. SOME OF THE BENEFITS INCLUDE: • Increased energy and well being • Stronger immune system and less frequent colds and flus • Improved mood • Deeper sleep • Faster recovery from stress, injury, or illness • Improved focus and concentration • Less inflammation • Increased metabolism Dr Chelsea Gronick is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor with a practice in the Lower Mission area of Kelowna. Dramatically Enhance Your Looks with
PLASMA SKIN TIGHTENING WITH AQUARIUS REJUVENATION
Plasma skin tightening, also known as fibroblast lift, soft surgery or plasma pen, is a natural and non-invasive skin lifting treatment used to dramatically enhance looks without the need for suturing, scalpels, general anesthetic or the risk, high cost and downtime of surgery. Relatively new in North America, plasma skin tightening has increased in popularity due to its many advantages. It has been effectively performed in Europe for many years. A precision device is used to improve skin tone and texture providing a more youthful, rested appearance; it successfully treats, repairs, rejuvenates and lifts ageing skin, improves and brightens skin tone, laxity and texture, significantly tightens loose or sagging skin, dramatically reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles and can even reverse hyperpigmentation and discolouration in some cases.
Most treatments are about an hour and discomfort is minimal, requiring only a topical anesthesia. Downtime is significantly less and is primarily due to social reasons. Most normal activities may be returned to right away.
During treatment, an electrical arc, also referred to as a plasma flash, forms between the tip of the device and the skin. The skin tissue is forced to contract by thermally disrupting the skin creating tiny carbon dots. This microtrauma stimulates the fibroblasts resulting in new collagen and elastin.
Curious? Let’s connect.
Results depend on the area being treated, the skin’s laxity, and individual response to treatment. The results are also permanent, but just like surgical alternatives, nothing is precisely 100% permanent, since the skin continues to age and is affected by lifestyle.

ORCHARD PARK DENTAL AND IMPLANT CENTER BY WANDA KURCHABA PHOTOS BY KEYLIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY
ften when we think of advanced technology, we initially visualize smartphones, smart televisions and smart home security. However, there are many sectors that benefit from technological advances including dentistry.
O
The Orchard Park Dental and Implant Center, owned by Dr. Perry Kreway & Associates, has some of the latest technology available in the field. In fact, they are one of the only dental offices that offer 3D scanning. And while the technology is impressive, it is the patients that benefit the most. This advanced scanning procedure allows their highly qualified team to see infections or lesions that may not be discovered for years. “Technology is a huge part of our practice. Less than one per cent of the practices in North America have 3D scanners, but this is something that we do as part of our regular screening process,” said Dr. Kreway. “We’re discovering things that would go unnoticed for years, often unidentifiable with traditional machines. It’s always better to discover a problem when it’s small and when there’s a solution rather than finding it when it’s a much bigger problem. If it remains undetected for years, it can become a major health concern.” As the practice strives to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to technology and advances in the field, all of their professionally trained staff spend a great deal of time studying and taking additional courses. In a three-year period, Dr. Kreway

alone will spend more than 400 hours to keep up-todate and stay ahead of the curve when it comes to the latest trends. The practice opened in 2002 with just three staff members and is conveniently located in the Orchard Park Mall. In just 16 years they’ve experienced tremendous growth and now have close to 20 employees including five full-time dentists who work extended hours (including evenings and weekends) to provide patients with the utmost in service. “We are a one-stop-shop for all your dental needs, but what sets us apart is our staff. We have a great team; everyone truly cares about our patients and they take the time to explain procedures and educate them on proper dental hygiene. Let’s face it, no one truly wants to go to the dentist, but we try to make the experience as pleasant as possible,” said Dr. Kreway. While the office provides regular dental services such as cleanings, root canals, and fillings for adults as well as children, they also offer a host of specialty
procedures including sedation, laser whitening, cosmetic dentistry, same day CEREC® crowns, full mouth reconstructions with dental implants and bone grafting, as well as BOTOX® treatments and facial rejuvenation. They also offer dental financing. They pride themselves on being gentle and compassionate and are resolved to finding the best solutions for their patients. “So much of what we do is important because of the connection between dental health and overall health and wellbeing, but what is most gratifying is cases where someone is always in pain and has struggled to find the right solution. When we exceed expectations, it is life changing for them and most gratifying for us,” said Dr. Kreway.

FEEL BEAUTIFUL AND CONFIDENT BY WANDA KURCHABA PHOTOS BY KEYLIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY
It doesn’t take long to realize after meeting Dr. Corrina Iampen that she’s not only enthusiastic about her business but also very passionate about meeting her clients’ expectations in the beauty battlefield.
er sense of humour and light-hearted quipped nature creates an environment that is comfortable, refreshing and professional. Dr. Iampen owns and operates Sensei Laser & Vein Rejuvenation Centre in West Kelowna that opened in 2012 but her expertise and experience in the industry takes her back 20 some years as a medical doctor/ entrepreneur.
H
“People love coming here because everyone is treated equally. Dr. Iampen loves what she does and loves working with people and helping them look and feel the best they can for the age that they are. She truly cares for her clients as though they are friends or family. People make the journey from Calgary, Vancouver, Saskatchewan, etc., to Kelowna to have treatments performed by Corrina,” said Fran, Clinical Nurse and Office Manager. With a full array of non-surgical treatment options clients can seek assistance with confidence in dealing with a variety of conditions including wrinkles, volume loss, skin care, varicose and spider veins, body image, toe fungus, hyperhidrosis, joint injections, hair loss, fat pad reduction, female issues such as urinary incontinence and so much more. Dr. Iampen 36

and her highly trained staff have a comprehensive understanding of the biology behind treatments of skin and body functions and are gifted at showing clients what small changes will allow them to see major results in a short period of time. In the year 2000, Dr. Iampen was involved in studying hair loss and the art of surgically transplanting hair follicles for hair regrowth in Sitges, Italy. She knew that this type of clinic was much-needed due to the selfesteem and confidence builder it would provide for not only men but women as well. However, the long and tedious surgeries required a lot of time to perform and eliminated the reality of doing so at the Elle Ambiance Medical Spa in Calgary that Dr. Iampen had owned and operated at the time. Three years ago, however, the company that bought the medical spa, asked her to stay on for three years as a medical director and Dr. Iampen agreed as she
felt the transition for her large volume of clients would be easier. As fate decided, the facility did hair transplants, triggering her dormant desire to perform this type of treatment once again. While the industry is constantly changing with advancement in treatments and technology, Dr. Iampen works hard to stay on top of the rapid changes and spends many hours studying and traveling around the world attending seminars in order to advance her skills and educate herself on the latest trends, treatments, and developments. “There is such a great need for advanced treatments and we look forward to being among the elite in the advanced technology of stem cell treatments for arthritic joints, torn ligaments and sport induced injuries and offering PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections for hair loss in both men and women,” said Dr. Iampen. Dr. Iampen is excited about expanding her business with the opening of a second location this fall. The 3500 sq. ft. centre in Sopa Square facing Pandosy Street in Kelowna will be more accessible and convenient for clients coming from different areas of the Okanagan. It will also provide additional space for hair transplants that will be incorporated into her clinic as well as other new and exciting services that have been added to the wide variety of treatment options. “Dr. Corrina strives to maintain a high level of service and maintains strong integrity and values. She is recognized by patients and colleagues as being one of the leaders in the industry, which gives her the incentive to push forward and go that extra mile for all of her clients,” said Fran. SALT & BRICK / JACK’S PIZZA & LIQUOR
Creating A New Energy In The Heart Of The City BY WANDA KURCHABA
There’s definitely a vibe. With so much growth in the restaurant and food industry in the last few years in downtown Kelowna, there’s a lot of positive energy on Bernard Avenue, as well as fantastic eateries to explore! ocal entrepreneurs Casey Greabeiel and Craig Lewis jumped at the chance to fill some of the gaps in the Kelowna culinary scene in an effort to create a new energy in the heart of the city. As a result, locals as well as tourists can reap the benefits of two brand new hot spots, Salt & Brick and Jack’s Pizza & Liquor, located 3 doors down from each other overlooking the Downtown Marina.
L
Salt & Brick, offers Kelowna’s most unique culinary experience in a bistro wine bar atmosphere. The menu is share plates (tapas style) and it is curated on a daily basis by Chef James Holmes. Holmes uses all the resources that are available to him in the Valley with several different farmers supplying various meats, vegetables, and greens on a daily basis. “Chef James has a unique and beautiful mind when it comes to the culinary world. Part of the fun of Salt & Brick is you never know what will be on the menu and you may never have a chance to eat it again. We take conventional items like Brussel Sprouts, Cauliflower, and Avocados and makes them unconventional yet delicious, these aren’t your Grandma’s Brussel Sprouts” said Casey.

change that. I had also always had the desire to open a pizza place, so when the opportunity presented itself I decided to combine both elements,” said Craig.
And while you may start your evening out having a glass of local wine and dinner at Salt & Brick, you can now venture 3 doors down to Jack’s for handcrafted cocktails, Kelowna’s largest selection of liquor, some seriously good late night eats and an atmosphere unlike any other in Kelowna.
Lewis spent 6 months working with Local Designer, Brandi Dea, from Gypsy Soul Designs, in an effort to create a new restaurant destination that would provide customers with a late night dining option that wasn’t fast food or a restaurant chain. The combination of Jack’s musically inspired atmosphere, one of a kind cocktails and Okanagan Style Pizza has created an inclusive vibe where everyone feels welcome.
“When I bought Bacaro, I recognized that the cocktails were the best part of the business so I didn’t want to

in a place that doesn’t have any ambiance. We wanted people to feel like they walked into a different city when they come to Jack’s,” said Craig.
We’ve had the entire restaurant singing songs that range from Bon Jovi to the Backstreet Boys since we opened.” said Craig.
Designer, Brandi Dea, used music as her inspiration. The food menus are old vinyl albums, the liquor menu features 26 specialty cocktails that are named after song titles and hundreds of album covers from all generations grace the walls, Jack’s is definitely not a conventional restaurant or bar.
With these amazing options for dining and late-night adventures, Bernard Avenue is without a doubt becoming the place to be for great food and culinary experiences in Kelowna.
“Music is what ties the whole concept together. We believe music is the perfect platform to create a social environment, it’s a great conversation piece and evokes so many memories. We’re open late and serve food late.

WORK/LIFE BALANCE WITH COURTNEY KOGA OF
THE CRASIAN FOOD TRUCK
At age 22 I took my vacation days in the form of a paycheque. Never enough hours in a day and the weight of a never ending to do list, where do you draw the line? After being referred to as a workaholic I decided if “being busy” and “always working” is what I’m remembered for then I’ve failed miserably in life. Passionate for food and people, I wanted to stay in the restaurant industry but create a work atmosphere that would provide a little more flexibility to live. Thus, The CrAsian Food Truck was born.
YOU DON’T FIND BALANCE, YOU CREATE IT. HOW? Be patient. The beginning was a lot of work. Four years, balancing two jobs, 85 hour work weeks, and teaming up with my sister led us to be comfortable today in our fifth season of operation. Stay focused, work hard, the time will pass and it will pay off.
Share the workload. Not everyone is as lucky as I to have their sister to count on. Find people you can count on; treat them well and they’ll do the same for you. Self employment has the potential to never completely step away from “work”. Set yourself up for success by first setting your team up for success: give them the tools, knowledge, and independence to take charge while you recharge. Have boundaries. Say yes to most things, but also say no. Evaluate the urgency and importance of tasks at hand and know when things can be delegated or deleted from your to do list. We trade 17 hour days for scheduled time off where we unplug and unwind. With the connected lifestyle we live today you won’t find time, you must make time.

We first considered a gelato shop while sitting in a cramped Vancouver apartment. Our future was uncertain; we were both on the back nine of our careers. Others, at this point in their lives, would consider purchasing a vacation home—somewhere warm and sunny, of course. However, we chose a different path. We wanted to create a business that was not only sustainable, but also creative and innovative. QB Gelato was never going to be made with ingredients from large and pre-made manufacturers. We wanted to learn and implement authentic practices using real, raw, and fresh ingredients. This is not the industry standard: we are proud to be amongst the 2% of remaining gelaterias committed to this level of authenticity. This authenticity is facilitated by our beautiful location: QB Gelato is proudly located in the Okanagan, a location rich with wonderful people and fresh ingredients. Ultimately, we are proud to be a part of the growing food culture in this area. We’re Victor and Kevin, and we are Gelato Maestros.

SOLID LIKE A ROCK Volcanic Hills Estate Winery BY WANDA KURCHABA PHOTOS BY KEYLIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY
50. 40. 18. These are important numbers to the Gidda family, owners of Volcanic Hills Estate Winery on Boucherie Road. The significance behind these numbers shows the family’s history and experience in producing award-winning wines.
he Gidda family has been farming for over 50 years, they’ve been growing grapes for over 40 years and they’ve been making wine for more than 18 years. Volcanic Hills was built in 2010, prior to that the family owned Mt. Boucherie Estate Winery for nearly 10 years before selling their shares to extended family members.

“Dad came to Canada from India in the late 1950s and through strong work ethic became one of the largest apple growers in West Kelowna. We also grew cherries and grapes and eventually ended up being a major supplier of grapes to 20 or so wineries in the 1990s,” said Bobby Gidda, President/Owner of Volcanic Hills Estate Winery. “However, as the economy changed,
the price of grapes went down, but the price of bottles went up. That’s when we took advantage of the opportunity to open a winery.” Today, the family grows grapes on 65 acres of land, has 10 acres of apples, and five acres of cherries. With their production of 150 tonnes of grapes and those that they purchase they are able to produce 1012,000 cases of wine each year. They strongly believe in diversification and therefore also produce small amounts of soft fruits such as peaches, nectarines, plums, strawberries and blueberries for farmer’s markets and for sale in their boutique shop. “We focus on growing cooler climate grapes and have seven different varietals, plus we buy four or five others for blending to make the most amazing wines,” said Bobby.

It gives us an opportunity to cater to individual preferences, but also allows us to encourage our guests to explore other options and perhaps experience different types of wines that they might not otherwise try,” said Bobby. For enthusiastic wine lovers, Volcanic Hills provides an opportunity to taste specially selected new releases, bottles that are trending in vinification, everyday classics and wine shop only releases through their Wine Club. Members are able to choose from three packages (red, white and mixed) and receive their special shipment of select wines four times a year, right to their door.

Design Trends BY LAVISH DESIGN
AU-NATUREL The new design trend of incorporating warm, neutral organic elements is pure genius...why? Because how long did everyone really love the mustard, pink and blue bathrooms until they had to rip it all out to be able to change up their colour scheme? Keeping the big expensive items simple and neutral will give you the flexibility to incorporate new colours through accents, furniture, art, etc without clashing with the style of the space. Love your home longer by keeping it timeless.

LESS IS MORE The concept of keeping life simple to enjoy the smaller things has come back around. Minimalism, less clutter and cleaning, more time doing what you love! That doesn’t mean you have to live in a blank white box... by adding some contrast, texture and pattern to certain elements you can achieve interest without the space becoming overwhelming and busy.
GREIGE Grey/Beige. Which way should you go? Both! We love choosing a paint colour that transforms in the different lights of day and night. Don’t restrict yourself by going a specific route. Use a colour that reflects the tones of your furniture, cabinetry, flooring etc. Our favorite is Benjamin Moore - Intense White! 54

The perfect solution for “tiny living. The concept of downsizing always leads to the question...where do I put all of my stuff? Multi-functional furniture is now a big trend in the industry and there are more and more options becoming available every day. Why waste all of this usable space under a bed when you can just lift it up to access all of your bed linens.
With open concept living spaces, the best way to create flow is to keep the furniture low! Our favourite modular sofa is this custom design, made in Canada - the Wynn. The wide arms continue to the back, offering more seating for those bigger gatherings!
ACCENTS Go big! Statement accent pieces are in! Less is more in this case so add some detail and organic elements with planters, vases, etc. Also, animal prints...who could resist some furry friends on your wall.
THE ART OF FURNITURE Have some fun with furniture by adding a few pieces of interest with dimension, colour, etc. Mix and match, add some warmth of wood and our new favourite accent colour - elegant emerald!

The Okanagan housing market is hot, and that means there are countless Contractors ready to build your dream home. In order to avoid any headaches down the road, ensure you are hiring a qualified Contractor with these 5 tips: ARE THEY LICENSED
MOST IMPORTANTLY
BC Housing has strict guidelines for all Licensed Residential Builders, to ensure they are qualified. A Contractor must be Licensed in order to obtain any new build permit. This is an essential requirement for any Contractor you hire for a new build.
You should actually like the Contractor you choose! You will be spending several months with your Contractor, and you should feel comfortable and confident with the person you choose to build your dream home!
DO THEY HAVE INSURANCE
Contact us today to find out what we will bring to your next project!
If the Contractor you hire is not registered with WCB, you could be liable if injury occurs on your build. Always ensure your Contractor has up-to-date WCB insurance. As an added measure, all Trades on your build should carry liability insurance, in case of property damage.

These markets have slowed down and especially since Vancouver has been one of our main feeder markets the last two years, it has affected us here in Kelowna. “Things are going to change in your life and if you end up not liking the house or if it’s not the right fit then we’ll sell it!” While the real estate market is typically hectic and busy, the Briggs on Homes Group is taking the current market shift in stride and they are using their passion to continually meet the needs of their clients. “A balanced market is typically the best for buyers and sellers, as it’s not so frenzied. For buyers there is more inventory on the market, they can take their time making decisions and it’s more relaxed. For sellers they just have to be a bit patient as the market shifts,” said Jaime.
With the housing market becoming more balanced, there are a number of ways that potential home buyers can prepare themselves when looking for the home of their dreams. Jaime and Leon stress that the more prepared the buyer is, the smoother the process is. Some of their suggestions on how to best prepare are:
1 2 3 4
The first step is going to your bank or financial institution to find out what you pre-qualify for, and to make sure that all your paperwork has been submitted to your lender. “We don’t know what to shop for unless we know what we’re able to spend and what our clients can afford,” said Jaime. Put together a criteria list. Buyers should establish their ‘must have’s’ and their ‘nice-to-have’s’. “As REALTORS® we can guide them, however, the ultimate decision on where they want to live, how much they can afford to pay, the age of the home, the square footage, and the number of bedrooms and bathrooms is up to the buyer,” says Jaime. Avoid trying to time the market. Some people obsess over trying to figure out when the best possible time to buy is, however it is impossible to anticipate the housing market. “The best time to buy is when you find the right house at a price that you can afford,” said Jaime. Remember that you’re not married to the house, you are married to your spouse. A lot of people tend to think too long-term, it’s not forever, it’s for now. “Things are going to change in your life and if you end up not liking the house or if it’s not the right fit then we’ll sell it!”

this project is a marriage of comfort and outdoor living. Energy efficiency with large windows and natural light, Towns on Taylor is intentional in its design and location. “Bright and spacious, these three bedroom plus flex room with deck or three bedroom with deck are ideal for the way you live today, but with the added bonus of room to grow for tomorrow,” says Jeffrey Anderson, sales manager of Towns on Taylor, marketed by Exceeds Inc. a full-stop project marketing agency. “This is an incredible opportunity for first-time buyers because of the 5% down payment option. Ample Spaces
Inc. are seasoned developers who plan to not only deliver high-quality construction, but a project that is built on budget and on time.” Ample Spaces Inc. is comprised of three principals, all engineers, who have been in the both the public and private sectors of industry for more than two decades. Some of their projects include work with YVR and TransLink, as well as many multi-family units all the way up to high-rise towers. The builder, West Fraser, also comes with extensive infrastructure experience from the lower mainland all the way across Canada; notably, they also have a hotel under construction in Kelowna. “They have been building multifamily units for over 25 years,” says Anderson. “In a time when material costs are going up, dealing with a builder who is efficient, forward thinking and conscious of the bottom line is invaluable.” Towns on Taylor allow pets without discrimination and rentals, making the units prime property for investors. “We‘ve created a property that is an unique opportunity for families and investors alike,” he says. Anderson has coined The Towns the ‘15-Minute Club,’ because regardless of your destination, you can be almost anywhere in Kelowna — on a normal day — in less than 15 minutes. Whether your destination is shopping or dinner, the airport or a tee time, the lake or UBC, everything is conveniently accessible. Best of all, Exceeds Inc. is a technology-based company designed for real estate development, which means potential buyers can download an app from his or her Android or Smartphone for free, and virtually walk through a brand new town home. With actual specs architecturally designed and approved by the City of Kelowna, visitors can literally peruse a unit to see exactly what the flex space is going to look like; design a dream kitchen, arrange furniture or select finishings – eliminating the guesswork. “Our goal was to alleviate the uncertainty. We offer an affordable entry point to a brand new home with full transparency and in an ideal location, what more could you ask for?” Stop by the Towns on Taylor sales centre today and speak with sales manager Jeff to begin the journey to your new home. Done to scale, you can touch and feel the materials, as well as see the units - done to scale. “There’s no need to wonder about what your unit will look like, when it will be completed or how much you need to put down, Towns on Taylor is a new approach to ownership.” The Towns on Taylors 255 Taylor Road, Kelowna Sales Centre 102-555 Montgomery Road townsontaylor.com MINT Kelowna

EPIC ROAD TRIP IN AN EPIC FAMILY VEHICLE! BY RHONDA TANNAHILL, PUBLISHER OF MINT
Orchard Ford kindly provided a new 2018 Ford Explorer for a road trip our family had planned down the Pacific NorthWest Coast. If you haven’t been, it is one of the most breathtaking trips one could take. We departed from Kelowna and headed down the Coquihalla and were already in love with the vehicle. From the third row seating to the Wi-Fi Hotspot, the Explorer had everything we needed to be comfortable and excited about the long journey ahead!

We travelled down the coast from Washington to Oregon stopping at numerous spots along the way. Cannon Beach, a black sand beach and a fresh crab feast were just a few! We turned heads with the beauty of this strong, stylish vehicle. The Explorer handled the curvy roads beautifully, we felt safe at every corner especially knowing the FordPass™, provided the feature of contacting your Dealer and Roadside Assistance should anything happen not to mention finding parking and comparing fuel prices along our route. SYNC provided convenience to our driving experience with its 8-inch LCD capacitive touchscreen and easy-to-use interface. It’s smartphone-like touchscreen with impressive responsiveness also allowed us to connect and control our compatible
smartphone with Android Auto. SYNC also helped us locate our favourite places with simple destination entry via optional navigation. From Oregon we ventured into California and into San Fransisco. Of course, it wouldn’t be a family road trip without a stop at Six Flags in Vallejo, California! Whatever the destination, the Ford Explorer got us there in style, comfort and most importantly, safely! For more information on the Ford Explorer visit www.orchardford.com and tell them Mint sent you!
