EVERY WOMAN DESERVES A ‘NEW BEGINNING’ BY WANDA WANDA KURCHABA KARCHUBA BY
There are many things in life that can make us feel good about ourselves, a great fitting bra can be one of them!
F
or women, finding the perfect bra that fits just right can impact how you feel physically and emotionally.
“A great fitting bra can make you feel like a million bucks. But, it’s not just about the bra. It’s about the fitting, it’s about establishing self-esteem, and gaining confidence. A great fitting bra will also make your clothes look and feel better as well,” said Judy Andrews, owner of New Beginnings. “We are very passionate about what we do and how we want women to look and feel about themselves.” This specialty boutique offers customers more than just an assortment of undergarments. In a comfortable, relaxing atmosphere, trained consultants work with women to educate them on properly fitted bras and to find the best fit possible. A bra fitting can be a fun and uplifting experience. “We’re really concerned about women not wearing the right bra size. We see a lot of women coming in with neck, shoulder and back problems. A properly fit bra can help eliminate a lot of these problems. The breast has weight to it so supporting it properly is vital to the rest of the body.” “Not all bras are created equal. There are fashion bras that look great, but they may not fit properly in the cup or they may stretch out very quickly with wear. Bras vary in fabric, structure, and production,” 16

said Judy. “The more pieces involved to construct a bra, the better it will be. That is why our European lines are absolutely the best, you can instantly feel the difference and they allow us to carry A-L cup sizes, as well as 28-52 band sizes.” In addition to carrying quality-made bras, New Beginnings also provides customers with a lovely selection of sleepwear, swimwear, daywear, and clothing. They carry a popular Canadian line called Paper Label that allows women to dress comfortably while still maintaining their style. As well, Judy and her team are proud to be Certified Mastectomy Consultants. “We understand the emotional and physical trauma that women go through whether they’ve had a mastectomy or lumpectomy. We are sensitive to their needs and offer not only our expertise but our encouragement and compassion as well. We take great pride in realizing what a wonderful privilege it is to work with these women and our goal is to make sure that they are feeling and looking their absolute best. We are truly blessed to have this opportunity to offer this service,” said Judy. After all, every woman deserves a ‘new beginning’.

BY BRANDI PARNELL
It has been said that some of the most creative breakthroughs come after a period of rest. In fact, many people return to work after a vacation, more engaged and passionate, ready to take their productivity to new heights. Some people retreat to the spa, others the ski hill – whatever your muse it’s critical to prioritize downtime.
I
f you’ve been feeling blah, meh or underwhelmed, it’s time to think about indulging in some well-needed self-care. Artist and writer Ashleigh Brilliant said, “Sometimes the most urgent and vital thing you can possibly do is take a complete rest.” At Mint, we endorse complete rests to regenerate our creative souls. Depending on our output, we may require more or less. Sometimes we fuel projects on ideas, coffee and adrenaline alone, which always deliver beautiful results, but sometimes at the expense of our health. Take it from us, take time for you. Our world is extremely accessible, which is great if you need to reach your aunt in China or your son in Nepal; but sometimes we are too accessible. Work bleeds into family life and social media steals time from sleep. Try spending one day per month without your phone or at very least your notifications turned on. If you journal, set reminders, use Sticky Notes or a wall calendar (it’s okay, we don’t judge), schedule in some self-love. Get a massage or go for a float. Get your yoga on or take a meditation class. Consider the time spent an investment in you.
Organize. I am guilty of putting off what is not a priority until I have more time. What can happen though is that you have a stack of emails that need your attention, papers to be filed, laundry to put away, seasonal items to box up – all of which can weigh you down. Free your mind of mental clutter and your world; it will open space for you to let more of your light shine. Do more of what makes you happy. If you’re passionate about cooking, then browse through the grocery store scouring the aisles for unique ingredients. Read recipes; go wine tasting with a friend or take a hike with your pooch. Run, spin or read your way to a smile. And lastly, snuggle. Seriously. Love the people who fill your heart up with joy, touch their little faces, hug a friend, go back to bed with your person. Connect with your heart, share your energy with your tribe and give people you love the gift of your touch. Happy all things self-love. Now start a list of the many things you have in your life to be thankful for, block out time for you and break free from the mundane. **cyber hug**

SUMMER BBQ GRILL SAFETY TIPS BY RENEE HUNT OF LUSTRE NUTRITION
With the arrival of the summer season, it is time to fire up the grill. If grilling is a regular part of your summer routine, then it is even more important that you “grill safe” and prevent hazards to your health which could occur. A possible hazard is known as carcinogens. “Carcinogens”, are cancer causing agents. The danger comes as meat burns (charrs). As it burns, it creates heterocyclic amines (HCAs) which can potentially damage a person’s DNA when consumed. Although is sounds scary, with a few tweaks and tricks you can not only make barbecuing safe for you and your family but even healthier than usual. Here are some tips to help you do that.
MARINATE YOUR MEAT TO REDUCE CARCINOGENS Many studies have shown that marinated meat contains 50 to 80% less carcinogens. The reason it works is not abundantly clear to scientists. In may be the marinades create a protective barrier between the meat’s proteins and the heat of the grill. Marinades containing herbs such as thyme, rosemary, oregano, basil, garlic, mint as well as Vitamin C appear to be the most effective in lowering the formation of carcinogens.
LOWER THE TEMPERATURE AND USE A DRIP TRAY The drip tray will catch fat drippings and decrease flare ups. Place aluminum foil on the grill to reduce flare ups even more. Try cooking your meat in “tin foil packets” containing veggies for added moisture and flavour. Keep thick, heavy sauces to a minimum In lab testing, thick heavy barbecue sauces tripled the amounts of HCAs present.
GRILL UP VEGGIES AND FRUIT Fruits and veggies do not create the harmful chemicals when cooked, so grill away. Veggies and fruits contain antioxidants which fight free radical damage.
Need a hand in the kitchen? Take advantage of Renee’s Personalized Meal and Menu planning service to take the overwhelm out of nutrition planning for yourself or family.
Keep your grill clean by scrubbing with a brush before and after grilling food. Scrubbing keeps the buildup of carcinogens left on the grill grates to a minimum and makes your food taste much better.
KEEP YOUR GRILL CLEAN
Leaner cuts of meat have less fat so there is less chance of the fat dripping to cause a flare up. Lean cuts of meat include “loin, round, flank, boneless and skinless.

CHEF PROFILE
Rebekah Roberts Kruger PRAIRIE FIREHOUSE BY WANDA KURCHABA
“A restaurant doesn’t rise and fall on one person. When you have good leadership and a great team behind the leader that’s when you start to see success.” ebekah Roberts Kruger knows this all too well. She’s been working alongside Anna Dumas owner of the Prairie Firehouse as the head chef since the popular restaurant opened two years ago.
R
“It’s definitely a team effort. We’re fortunate to have built a reputation for offering good food and we’ve established a team of skilled, experienced employees. We’re proud to now have others who are seeking us out as an employer of choice in the hospitality industry,” said Rebekah. The Prairie Firehouse is in the core of downtown Brandon located in the historic 1911 Central Fire Station. Aside from providing guests with a distinct atmosphere, the Prairie Firehouse serves delicious meals that use the freshest and most local ingredients possible. “We capitalize on what we have around us. Anna knows what it takes to run a local business and wants to support as many other local businesses as possible,” said Rebekah. “I’ve enjoyed the opportunity I’ve had to build relationships with our local producers - local vegetable farmers, local cattle producers, butchers, etc. It’s been great getting to know them, their lifestyle and how it ties in with what we do.” In contrast, chefs and restaurant owners in places like Toronto that aren’t located in the heart of an agricultural community don’t always have the same opportunity to build relationships with those who are growing the food that they use to create culinary diversity with. When relationships are established, it makes it that much easier to provide excellence in the food industry. 26
MINT Westman
Rebekah grew up in a restaurant family and learned how to cook at a young age, she was formally trained however at Assiniboine Community College in the Culinary Arts diploma program. While she admits that being a chef isn’t as glamorous as what you see on television, her passion is fuelled by people. “What has always drawn me to cooking and what I liked best about it is that it gives me the opportunity to bring people together.” By using local products and continually introducing new seasonal menus, as a chef Rebekah knows that she has perks that many others in her profession don’t have, one of which is the chance to be creative. Planning, organizing and creating new dishes using local products is a luxury she doesn’t take for granted and is grateful that she’s able to be part of a local, independent restaurant. Although, the menu changes frequently the Prairie Firehouse team also realizes that not everyone is willing to take their taste buds on a joy ride. As such, they are sure to provide consistent menu options like the Firehouse Burger (which is to die for!) that often appeals to people who perhaps aren’t the most adventurous foodies. The historic building is also an outstanding venue for hosting special events. The atmosphere, along with a customizable menu, provides event planners with the opportunity to host an unforgettable event that will leave their guests wanting to come back again and again.

FARMERY E S TAT E B R E W E R Y As Homegrown As It Gets! BY MINT STAFF AND FARMERY ESTATE BREWERY
Started by brothers, Lawrence and Chris Warwaruk, Farmery Estate Brewery is an estate brewery located in Neepawa, Manitoba, Canada. Farmery is unique in that it is an “estate brewery”: both a brewery and family farm, and ingredients for the beer are grown on the family farm.
28
MINT Westman
he brothers’ story begins when they moved to Winnipeg in 1999 to pursue more viable opportunities than were available on the family farm at the time. “We were looking for better opportunities at the time and thought we’d take a risk,” recalls Lawrence. That risk was opening a four-star restaurant called Lux Solé, which focused on well-made comfort food using locally-produced ingredients as much as possible. After ten years, getting married, and with young families, the brothers decided to transition to a different business concept.
T
Next door they took over an old pool hall and opened up one of the city’s first gastropubs, Luxalune Gastropub. Luxalune’s focus was on excellent pub food and great beer. But beer options were few. And at the same time, the craft beer trend was just starting. Chris says, “There were very few places offering beer options, so we thought it’d be a good opportunity to add to our line-up.” It proved popular with customers, prompting Chris and Lawrence to significantly expand the options at Luxalune to over 150 import and domestic craft beer varieties, making Luxlune one of the premier destinations in Winnipeg for craft beer aficionados and new beer fans alike. However, missing their farm roots, the brothers had their light-bulb moment: to not only brew their own beer, but also grow ingredients such as barley and hops for that beer. The Warwaruks decided to combine their farming background and business experience to start one of North America's first estate breweries: the Farmery Estate Brewery. The vision was a farm and a brewery, where visitors could not only view beer being brewed, but see for themselves the ingredients that went into that beer growing in the family farm barley fields and hopyards, and enjoy an authentic farm-grown beer. They first established their barley fields and hopyards on Lawrence’s family farm in Neepawa, MB. Then in
2012, they launched their first beer, the Farmery Premium Lager, made with their own barley and co-packing their beer with the help of another brewery. One year later, they successfully pitched the estate brewery concept to the Dragons on CBC’s hit show “Dragons’ Den”. The uniqueness of the estate brewery, and the popularity of their beer right out of the gate, showed there was demand for a premium farm-grown beer. The Farmery Estate Brewery fired up their brewery located in Neepawa in early September 2016, with the family farm growing barley and hops located minutes away. They started brewing more beer styles and adding to their lineup. They also expanded their vision of adding value to what they grow and making new products from their barley and hops, such as Farmery barley flour mixes; non-alcoholic pop for the whole family, Farmery Malted Sodas; a variety of beauty and well-being products such as face lotion and a hop spray as a sleep and relaxation aid. Also located at the brewery, is the Famery Food Truck, with delicious food such as fish & chips with barley flour batter, and beer ice cream sandwiches and parfaits made with Farmery ingredients. Staying true to their global but local vision, the province recognized the uniqueness of Farmery by accepting it as one of Manitoba’s latest Star Attraction. ADAPTING TO THE TIMES BY WANDA KURCHABA
Benjamin Franklin once said that nothing is certain in this world except death and taxes, but it seems that one other thing that is certain is change. As we live in this twenty-first century it is mind-boggling to reflect on all the changes in our world even within the last decade or two.

We want to help our agents to excel by giving them the best tools possible. Century 21 Canada allows us to do so by investing in a lot of resources to ensure that the right systems are in place. nd that is why it is important for companies to not only adapt to the changing times but to look to a future that will in all likelihood continue to reinvent itself. Century 21 has done exactly that.
A
For the first time in its 47-year history, the parent company has rebranded and the local franchise ,owned by a six-person partnership group, is following suit. “There’s a bold new look that has been launched that elevates marketing in the real estate business to a whole new level. It’s a clean, professional brand that will not only help our properties to stand out but also provides our agents with improved tools to assist their clients whether they are buying or selling a property,” said Laurie Brugger, Partner/Realtor®. Along with a refreshed logo, other updates to the brand include a redesigned website which will launch this fall, new marketing material, additional training opportunities, improved software and digital services. The timing of this rebrand is ideal for the Century 21 office in Brandon as they recently relocated to a building that was redesigned and developed from the studs. “A lot of thought and planning went into designing our new space. In fact, it took over a year to determine what would work best for us as realtors so we could effectively and efficiently serve our clients in a modern, professional atmosphere,” said Laurie. Century 21 has over 50 agents with many specializing in residential, rural, farm, commercial or condominium real estate. They provide service to the entire Westman area
and the majority of the Parkland area going as far north as Swan River. The local franchise has three office locations and will soon be celebrating their 40th anniversary. The company proudly champions their agents with a supportive team of managers who along with the partnership group help to foster an environment that is friendly, respectful and inclusive, but that allows agents the flexibility to be creative and to highlight their own strengths in the industry. “You’re only as good as the tools you have in your toolbox. We want to help our agents to excel by giving them the best tools possible. As we expand and continue to recruit the next generation of Realtors® we need to support their tech-savvy knowledge. Century 21 Canada allows us to do so by investing a lot of resources ensuring that all the right systems are in place,” said Laurie. “All the changes are exciting and we are confident that our clients will directly benefit from the stylish, modern look and recognize the value of using a real estate company that is challenging the existing conventions.”

EASY WAYS TO STAY ON TREND BY JAYDI DINSDALE OF TIMBER + LACE INTERIOR DESIGN
Staying on trend can be a challenging task. Here are a few tips on how to keep up with some timeless looks.
INDUSTRIAL STORAGE Strong, open and functional. Wall anchored shelving provide ever vital storage and display without adding weight to a room.
EXPOSED FRAMES Add an extra touch of warmth and glam with sofas that are showing more than a little leg. Look for soft seating with exposed wood or metal frames.
WOVEN Whether its wicker, Danish cord or strips of leather, woven seating is bringing the heat (warmth), texture and visual interest.
LIGHT + AIRY Keeping things light; slender legs joined with open frames and slim tops, accent tables keep their presence simple + discrete.
46
MINT Westman
PATTERN + TEXTURES Rugs can take a space from blah to ta-da! Rug patterns that also provide visual + tactile texture are the way to go! (Make sure you get the right size, for a living room you’ll probably need at least an 8’x10’)
SHINING LIGHT Lamps work hard for your room. Not only do they provide essential light, but select the right one and it can also act as a sculptural object, bringing balance and harmony to a space.
BIG + BEAUTIFUL Large round mirrors are in high demand right now. These beauties are another item that is multi-talented. A large mirror will bounce light around the room, but round mirrors will also add a softness that will add contrast to the more linear lines within your space.
MIX + MATCH Mix it up! Add in a variety of shapes, size and patterns of accents, such as pillows to make your space feel personal, lived in + finished. These can be easily swapped out to refresh your space! So there you have it! Don't be afraid to mix woods and metals into your design for added warmth and have fun with patterns and colors to make your decor stand the test of time.

LEECH PRINTING: Printing and Beyond BY WANDA KURCHABA PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78
For over ninety years, Leech Printing has proudly built their reputation as the region’s leading provider of operational, marketing and publishing-based print products. As their new branding states, they have now evolved to offer ‘printing and beyond’. hat reputation was built by providing their customers with a broad range of high quality printed products, and services while introducing innovation and technology to the marketplace. That philosophy has been one of their guiding principles, as well as their commitment to being an active contributor and partner in the community. As this local company welcomes fourth generation staff and family members into their business, they continue to work hard and respect the traditional foundation of the family business while striving to meet the future needs of their customers in a fast-paced, socially changing society.
As an early provider of web design and content development services, Leech Printing specializes in building custom websites, developing logo and brand identities, email and direct mail programs and social media campaigns. In addition, they continually work with clients to educate and train them so that they can manage their own digital marketing on an ongoing basis.
“We’ve been working hard over the past few years to expand our product service offerings so that our clients can conveniently have all of their printing, new media, and marketing needs met through one company,” said Meredyth Leech. “It’s about adding value. We’re confident that we’re meeting or exceeding our clients’ printing needs, but now we can further those offerings by providing specialized services in digital and online marketing.”
“One of our strengths with expanding into marketing support is that since we’ve been working with so many different businesses over the years, we have a good grasp on their history, background, business structure and values. It’s a natural progression to move from helping them with their print marketing materials to multichannel, new media marketing. The advantage to

working with us is that it keeps things simple, creates efficiency, trust and ensures a good understanding on messaging,” said Gillian Leech. As Leech Printing goes beyond printing, they have developed packages that introduce their wide range of services. With the Business Brand Renovation or Small Business Quick Start package, the mystery of what needs to be done and who will take on the tasks is easily solved for business owners and organizational managers who may find marketing a bit of a challenge. “It’s important to know that our team and the combined years of experience we bring to the table not only adds to our success, but also to the success of our clients. So it’s not only convenient to support
local companies, but you’ll find great value in doing so,” said Gillian. As they enter their tenth decade in business, Leech Printing is taking the time to not only reflect on their history but to also re-evaluate their own brand identity and freshen up their look. “We’re still the same familiar company, we just feel it is important to evolve our visual identity to ensure our working environment is parallel to our service offerings – printing and beyond,” said Meredyth. COMMUNITY PROFILE
THE ASSINIBOINE THEATRE COMPANY The Assiniboine Theatre Company was founded in 2015 as a non-profit corporation to: •
Share in providing the community with a year-round schedule of live theatre produced to serve the cultural, educational and entertainment needs of the community.
•
To welcome and provide a vocational opportunity for all volunteers interested in the theatre arts to participate in the many activities of community theatre.
Before it’s foundation, a group of like-minded friends invested their own money to put David Mamet’s Pulitzer prize winning play, Glengarry Glen Ross on the Westman stage. Thankfully, the production created some revenue to start the company. Since that time, the membership has grown to over 40 members and welcome anyone who is interested in the dramatic arts to join. ATC has produced two productions for Samaritan House Ministries’ fundraising galas (Love Letters, Graceland), has been hired for local events (Gossip in the Graveyard, BDO Christmas party) and recently closed their first full stage production of the Canadian classic play Zastrozzi; The Master of Discipline by George F. Walker. They are currently planning their 2018/19 season. Interested members of the public are encouraged to visit the Assiniboine Theatre Company’s Facebook page. Become a member today.
