YOUR SOLE CAN BE THE PATH TO BETTER HEALTH WITH
Robyn Griffiths of Sole Soothing Reflexology
As a holistic healing modality, reflexology addresses the whole individual, incorporating body, mind and spirit. It is a safe, noninvasive deeply relaxing way to restore and balance the body’s energies and promote health and well-being. Reflexology is a specific technique whereby pressure is applied using thumbs, fingers and sometimes crystals onto precise reflex points of the feet. This is based on the idea that these reflex points correspond to all organs, body parts and energy systems. What makes foot reflexology so effective is that, with over 7,000 nerve receptors per foot, the feet are good indicators of stress in the body/mind. In essence, reflexology can play a major role in attaining and maintaining better health. Circulation is improved, lymphatic drainage is enhanced, toxins are released and the body’s endorphins are triggered. This balancing effect, which helps to normalize all functions, enables the body to heal itself.
The effects of regular reflexology treatments can have profound results with many reporting overall improvement in symptoms, health and a greater sense of well-being. Isn’t it time you tried Sole Soothing Reflexology?

Many of my clients have found relief from the symptoms of chronic diseases (e.g., diabetic neuropathy, MS fatigue, anxiety). As well as those with acute injuries, such as athletes with muscle tension, and plantar fasciitis. Often we just “go” until the body makes us stop, so I often recommend reflexology as a part of good self-care and prevention.
Robyn Griffiths holds a BA in Psychology and is a certified reflexologist with over 13 years experience. She is a Reiki Master and an approved practitioner of the Reflexology Association of BC with a studio in Kelowna’s Lower Mission

Fall for FRAMES BY ALLISON GRANGE
When I was a little girl, it was my dream to wear glasses. I remember sitting in my bed, in the dark, attempting to strain my eyes so that I would need to go to the eye doctor and get fitted for the most beautiful frames.
12
MINT Kelowna
Y
es, that was the logic of a seven-year-old, but it made so much sense to me at the time. My dad wore glasses, some family members wore glasses, and a couple cool kids at school wore glasses. Could you blame me for wanting to look like them? Unfortunately (or fortunately), the nighttime eye-straining of my youth didn’t work. But, by the time I was about 18, I began to notice that my vision was not as sharp as it used to be. Soon, I was wearing my very own pair of simple, modest, bronze-rimmed glasses. And, I hated them. It wasn’t their fault; there was nothing wrong with the glasses themselves. What was wrong was that I became bored with them very quickly. I felt like they looked fine in casual situations, but didn’t look good when I was wearing a dress or sportswear. They didn’t always match what I was wearing. They didn’t have much style. They were meek and bland and when I wore them I felt the same.
So, after a year of wearing them infrequently, I put them in a drawer and decided that it wasn’t really that important to see details on trees or grass or sunsets or people’s faces. Luckily, since then, I’ve learned a thing or two and matured a little bit. Today, I’m the proud owner of four pairs of frames – each carefully selected for specific parts of my life. Oh, and most importantly, I can see very well. It’s taken me a decade and a half of trying on, testing out, experimenting with, and learning about purchasing the right frames for my face, personality and lifestyle. As with clothing, just because a certain style or trend looks great on one person, doesn’t mean it will work well for everyone. Plus, I don’t know about you but I would get bored wearing the same sweater every day of my life. Why would it make sense to own only one pair of glasses? Now, the last thing I’m suggesting you do is go out and buy 20 pairs of frames. I am the first person to recommend being intentional in all purchases to avoid expense and waste. But, sometimes it makes sense to have a classic, round wireless frame for casual use, and a pair of red, acetate retro-inspired frames for funkier wear. Are you a runner or gym-goer? Why not sport a sturdy metal frame that stands up to your activity level and looks the part too? A quick Instagram or Pinterest search for “eyeglasses” shows current trends leaning towards a variety of clear, tortoise-shell, rose-gold, turquoise and multi-coloured frames. What’s so fun about fall 2018 is that it seems truly anything goes when it comes to glasses, as long as the frames work for your comfort and lifestyle. Why not visit your local optician and try on some frames today? Not only will you be able to see what works for you, but it will give you the chance to speak with a professional who can suggest frames for your specific needs. Be open and have fun trying on frames that you wouldn’t normally gravitate towards. You’ll never know unless you try. And who knows? Soon you may be seeing yourself in a whole new style.

DO YOU HAVE A HIDDEN FOOD SENSITIVITY OR A FOOD ALLERGY? BY DR. CHELSEA GRONICK, ND
There are few things that are more frustrating than working hard to improve your eating habits, consistently choosing fresh and natural foods, and still feeling unwell. Hidden food sensitivities are often a huge part of the problem. FOOD ALLERGIES VS FOOD SENSITIVITIES There is a lot of confusion surrounding food allergies and food sensitivities, and the differences between them. A food allergy is an immediate immune system reaction to a certain food. Food allergies are often severe, and can be life-threatening. Other times, reactions are less severe, but they are still immediate. For example, you may break out into a skin rash after eating something containing peanuts. Food allergies generally involve IgE antibodies, and are lifelong. Food sensitivities are different types of reactions, generally involving IgG antibodies. They usually cause milder symptoms, and are not life-threatening. Of course, this doesn’t mean that they don’t affect your quality of life or that they aren’t major factors in your health and wellbeing-- really, what it means is that they’re harder to pinpoint. Symptoms are often delayed, and may not show up until several hours or even sometimes a day or two after eating the food in question. Like allergies, food sensitivities are reactions by the immune system to something that it perceives as a threat. When the immune system reacts to a threat, it creates inflammation. Inflammation can manifest itself in a number of different ways, leading to a wide range of symptoms including fatigue, headaches, digestive symptoms, joint pain, and skin issues.
14
MINT Kelowna
Inflammation is at the root of all kinds of chronic illnesses, from IBS to ADHD to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and this is often linked to undiscovered IgG food sensitivities. Identifying trigger foods and eliminating them can lead to improvement in many different chronic conditions, autoimmune disorders, and puzzling symptoms.
FOOD SENSITIVITY TESTING There are many principles of healthy eating that do apply across the board, but the truth is that everyone reacts differently to different foods, and no book, course, or person in your life can tell you which foods are right or wrong for you without understanding and investigating this.
Although there are some common triggers of inappropriate immune system reactions (including eggs, dairy, gluten, and certain nuts), there is also the possibility that you may be totally fine with eggs and nuts, and may instead have an inflammatory response to spinach. So how do you get to the root of which foods affect YOU? Food sensitivity testing is really the best way to do it. It is possible to take on an elimination diet without testing, where you eliminate many common “problem foods and then reintroduce them one at a time, monitoring your symptoms as you go along. But what if one of your trigger foods is something that is, for most
people, very healthy-- like blueberries? Food sensitivity testing eliminates the guesswork and SO much of the frustration, and allows you to take control of your diet in a personalized way. In my practice, I use comprehensive panels from a specialized lab called Alletess for food allergy testing, and to test for sensitivities to up to 184 different foods. Ready to get to the root of your symptoms, identify your trigger foods with food sensitivity testing, and take control of your health? Book an appointment with me.   Dr. Chelsea Gronick is a naturopathic doctor with expertise in helping patients with thyroid and hormone imbalances and weight loss resistance. CODENAME:
Beautiful Boobies! BY ANGELA O’BRIEN AT ESTEEM LINGERIE
They are the part of the body that has a thousand aliases - Breasts, Boobies, Ta-Ta’s, the list could go on for this entire article. What I have discovered in my years of bra fitting, is how women feel about their breasts is like opening the curtain to their self esteem and their body image.
T
he mixed messages and confusion as to how we should feel about our breasts is all through our media. In the change room, I’ve observed, there can be a real love/hate relationship with women and their breasts for so many reasons. The most dominate is that we always seem to want what we don’t have. Women with large breasts wanting smaller breasts or women with smaller breasts wanting large ones is just the starting point of the critiques wielded at the body. Then there is also the questions of purpose of the breasts. An obvious one is that breasts tend to be an one of the most noticeable differences between men and women. At times they are objectified for their visual and sexual appeal and at the same time they can provide nourishment for newborn babies. As a teenager I anxiously awaited their development. In my 20’s, when my breast finally arrived, I lamented the painful lessons I received playing sports without a good sports bra. My breasts have changed throughout my life with puberty, pregnancy, weight gain/ loss, hormonal changes. As I enter my 40’s I’m now considering how to monitor them in light of the risks of breast cancer. As ongoing change is a given in any life, I know that my breasts will evolve also; yet this seems to be a fact that surprises a number of women. At a time when we have access to so much information, I find most of my clients still afraid to ask really important questions when it comes to their breast health. Ask a woman how she feels about her
breasts, many times what is expressed is concern and sometimes fear over how people see her, whether a nipple might show or a seam on the bra or a piece of lace... so convinced that everyone in the world is focused and judging her breasts. I also observe that women seem to feel very alone when it comes to themselves and their breasts because we generally don’t really talk about it with others. I’m a great believer in the shared experience. While no two women have the exact same path, comparing those aspects that are common can bring relief from the feeling that we are alone and can reduce the fears about being different. We have the pleasure of seeing numerous women who have gentled the harsh judgement they are passing on their own breasts when they hear that what they consider irregularities or flaws are the standard for most women. I also believe that when we love the parts that make us who we are, whether it be breasts or feet, our bodies respond to that positive attention. It is why Esteem Lingerie exists, a simple theory that women properly fitted in quality bras that fit their body will lead to greater comfort and both in the bra and in the mind. Come into Esteem Lingerie and say “Codeword: Beautiful Boobies” and we will give you 25% off any regular priced purchases until Feb 28, 2019! Just Breathe INTEGRATING MEDITATION INTO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE BY KIMBERLEY FALK
F
rom the moment you wake up, your mind is a hamster pumped up with caffeine, running its never ending race on that wheel. You need to get to work on time, make sure you meet that deadline, the babysitter hasn’t confirmed yet, and your car needs to get to the dealer for a tuning by this afternoon. The National Science Foundation says each of us has up to 50,000 thoughts in a day and yet for many of us, very few of those thoughts are focused on not thinking. Meditation is important for stress and anxiety relief and is a contributing factor for daily happiness and minimizing those negative thoughts that pop up outside of your control. If you’re wondering what you can do to help slow down those thoughts and incorporate some meditation into your day, here are some simple things you can add to your daily routine to get you started.
START WITH AN APP-ETIZER Smartphones are the centre of many of our daily tasks; use them to your advantage by adding a meditation app to yours. There are apps out there that can remind you to breathe, drink water, and can play therapeutic music to help you sleep at night. The Mindfulness App and Calm are both great choices that allow you to develop a meditation schedule around the rest of your day.
WHILE YOU COMMUTE, COMMUNICATE WITH YOURSELF Have you ever gotten lost in thought during your travels to the extent that you don’t even remember getting to your destination? It’s scary. No matter how you get to work each day, use that alone time to practice meditation and focus on your mind. Instead
Try to think of one line/mantra that you can say to yourself whenever you find your stress levels are rising. Even simply saying,
“Eliminate the worry” can make a huge change on your thought path.
of letting that traffic jam be a chance to worry about arriving late, focus on everything going on around you. The university student outside walking her dog, the seat belt against your chest, the sound of the air vents and your breath. Letting your thoughts clear allows you to embrace your day with positivity instead of bogging it down with everything that could go wrong.
WHEN YOU’RE WAKING UP Invest in an alarm tone that will peacefully wake you up ten minutes before you actually need to get up, turn on some calming music, and spend 20 minutes doing this exercise: Put your hand on your stomach and take in a deep breath through your nose, letting your entire chest fill up with air and your stomach push up against your palm. With your lungs full of air, take five seconds to focus on your toes. If they’re tense, give them a wiggle and relax. Let out that breath slowly through your mouth. On your next breath, focus on your calves, then your knees, and so on. Do the same meditation exercise when it’s time to sleep at night.

As a Holistic Nutritionist, one of the questions I get asked most often from clients is, “Which diet is the healthiest”? With so much misleading or conflicting information available today, it can be nearly impossible to decipher it all and know what is best.
There are many popular diets and dietary trends being followed today, each with their own benefits and challenges. Let’s start by breaking some of them down.
of carbohydrates, your body eventually stops using glucose as energy, and begins to burn ketones/fat as its primary source.
Ketogenic Diet
BENEFITS
Although the “keto” diet seems to have gained a lot of popularity within the last decade, it is actually close to 100 years old. It was originally developed as a way to treat epilepsy, but is now commonly used as a weight loss tool, or to help those with diabetes and certain types of cancer.
WHAT IS IT? The premise behind the Ketogenic diet is high-fat, lowcarb meals. The majority of your daily intake is in the form of fat, while including moderate amounts of protein and very little carbohydrates. By depriving your body 24
MINT Kelowna
Most people who follow the keto diet will experience some weight loss, especially very early on in their journey (this is the main reason people try the Keto diet today!). Thanks to the increased amount of fat being consumed, you can also expect to have more energy and mental clarity, while feeling full for longer after each meal. Lastly, since you are eliminating sugar and all processed foods, inflammation and insulin levels naturally decrease.
CHALLENGES There are a number of challenges that accompany the Ketogenic diet. First and foremost, it can be extremely
difficult to follow long-term, and is very limiting. Also, when eliminating fruits and many vegetables, you naturally decrease your fiber intake, which can have harmful effects on digestion, metabolism and other body functions. Another problem is that many people following this diet do not consume healthy fats and proteins, and end up loading up on inflammatory, processed foods such as cheese, dairy products and bacon. Eating this way in the long-term can lead to deficiencies in key nutrients. If you’re going to follow the Keto way of eating, be sure to do so consistently and with healthful foods
in the pre-agricultural era, you are optimizing health while decreasing your risk of developing chronic and inflammatory conditions.
Paleolithic Diet
BENEFITS
The Paleo diet has also been around for hundreds of years and is based on the traditional “hunter-gatherer” diets of our ancestors. By eating foods that are close to those eaten
WHAT IS IT? The basis of the Paleo diet is plenty of meat, fish and vegetables, with no grains, sugar or processed foods. The goal is to consume primarily whole foods that our ancestors would have had access to in order to reduce the risk of modern day ailments, such as diabetes, inflammation and other chronic conditions.
One of the main benefits of the Paleo diet is the elimination of inflammatory foods. It is also high in healthy fats and proteins – both of which contribute to balanced blood sugar, satiety, as well as healthy skin, hair and nails.
MINT Kelowna
25
CHALLENGES This diet can be extremely restricting for some people, which makes it both difficult to follow and not sustainable. A Paleo diet can also be excessively hard to follow for vegans.
Vegan/Vegetarian Diet Although there are vast differences between a vegan and vegetarian diet, both have become more and more common in recent years. There are various reasons that one would choose a vegan or vegetarian diet, including both ethical and environmental beliefs.
WHAT IS IT? The elimination of meat is the basis of both vegan and vegetarian diets. However, those who follow a vegan
26
MINT Kelowna
diet also choose to eliminate all animal products and byproducts, while some vegetarians continue to incorporate some animal products into their diets, including eggs and dairy.
BENEFITS The major benefits of following a diet that is free of animal products is the increased focus on eating whole foods that are full of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and fiber.
CHALLENGES A vegetarian or vegan diet can pose certain challenges, including a lack of variety, and deficiencies in nutrients including B-vitamins and omega-3’s fatty acids. In addition to being restricting, many individuals following a vegan/vegetarian diet rely on pre-packaged, processed
foods to supplement their diet, which are typically full of sugar, additives and unhealthy ingredients. As you can see, there is no perfect diet for everyone. Everyone has unique needs, genes and starting points, all of which need to been closely considered before making any diet or lifestyle changes.
find what makes you feel best, and don’t worry about putting a label on it! Living a healthy, balanced lifestyle doesn’t have to be complicated and by listening to your body, you can start to figure out what the healthiest diet really is – for you!
The best diet is one that works for both your body and your lifestyle. Many people begin a diet as a way to lose weight, but it is important to understand that just because a diet results in weight loss, does not necessarily make it the healthiest option. You need to consider what you are giving up, which is often key nutrients that your body needs to function optimally. Aside from therapeutic diets that need to be followed to treat a specific condition or issue, I believe that you should

The winery, tucked in lush vineyards with a panoramic lake view, is one of Kelowna's oldest wineries. CedarCreek released its first wines in 1987, and is proudly one of the first eight pioneering wineries of BC. Today, CedarCreek produces the Okanagan Valley's best wines. The winery has twice been recognized as “Canada's Winery of the Year.” The winery is proud of its history in the Okanagan, and the reputation they have built for producing fine wines. Everything they do is based on their philosophy of ‘Respect the land, honour tradition, pursue perfection.’ With the holidays fast approaching, CedarCreek has some suggestions on wines perfect for celebrating the season, along with some pairings to make these selections shine. CedarCreek’s Executive Chef, Neil Taylor, recommends these fine CedarCreek wines for your holiday celebrations. Indoor Plants BRINGING HEALTH AND HAPPINESS TO YOUR HOME BY SUZANNE RENT
Indoor plants are an easy way to bring nature into your inside space. They’re decorative, of course, but they have other benefits that make them great for your home and your health.
L
akeland Plant World in Dartmouth, says the primary benefit of indoor plants is they absorb carbon dioxide while releasing oxygen. But indoor plants can also improve the air in other ways. A study on the benefits of indoor plants comes from a rather unlikely source. In 1989, the NASA Clean Air Study published a comprehensive list of indoor plants that remove toxins such as benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene from the air. The study was looking at ways to improve the air quality for astronauts in its space stations, but its list also provides great suggestions for plants that homeowners can use in their own spaces. Brand says while all plants clean the air, some are better than others. “From that study came a lot of knowledge about what cleans the air the best,” says Brand. She suggests Sansevieria trifasciata, commonly known as mother-in-law’s tongue, as a good starting place. It’s on the NASA Clean Air Study list. Its leaves are dark green and structured and could fit well into any space. The NASA list also included peace lily, spider plants, a number of dracaenas, aloe vera, and Boston ferns. Besides cleaning the air, Brand says indoor plants provide a sense of calm, improve general wellbeing, add additional humidity to the air, and create a buffer against noise. Use plants on a windowsill to cut down on noise from outside, or place them along the wall in an office to lessen the noise from common rooms in your home.

Not all plants on the list, however, will be suitable for every home. There are other concerns with indoor plants, such as the amount of maintenance required and if the plants are toxic and harmful to pets and children. “As long as you have a nice sunny, bright spot for them, you can let them go bone dry and they do just fine,” says Brand. Some indoor plants are toxic to cats and dogs, so if you have pets, you’ll have to be careful. While the peace lily will clean your air, it will also make your cat sick. Dracaenas are toxic to cats and dogs. There are a number of ways to display your indoor plants. Basic terrariums made with a glass vase and lid or even a mason jar is suitable for succulents. Brand says keep terrariums in brightly lit spot but not direct sun. You can use old china or dishes or a decorative crate for a rustic look, just simply drill a hole in the bottom for drainage. “All plants are best when there’s drainage,” she adds. You can even make your own living wall. Brand says it’s as simple as mounting several pots on the wall, arranging them in a designed, and deciding which plant to drop into which pot. Pre- designed living wall units are available for purchase, or if you’re handy, you can make a living wall out of a wooden palette, just check out Pinterest. The key to a successful living wall is in the plants you choose and where you place them. A kitchen or bathroom is a good location, as the rooms offer extra humidity. Succulents work well in this climate. “You have to choose plants that are easygoing and like that situation,” says Brand. 40

dlum Brown Limited has a storied history in British Columbia. Founded in the 1920s in Vancouver, and operating in Kelowna since 1969, the company provides investment services with a singular focus on clients. After nearly a century, it remains how it began – wholly owned by its employees and committed to its independence and leadership in the investment services industry. Odlum Brown has earned its stellar reputation as a respected, independent, client-focused institution whose core values aren’t changing now or in the future.
O
The company has received many accolades over the years, due to its philosophy and commitment to its clients over generations. Odlum Brown has been named one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies for 19 consecutive years, and is proudly led by Debra Hewson – the company’s dynamic President and Chief Executive Officer. In 2017, the company was also recognized as one of Canada’s Most Admired™ Corporate Cultures by leading cultural talent management firm Waterstone Human Capital.
What truly makes Odlum Brown stand out is its independence. The organization does not offer its own investment products, and has no investment banking arm. Its Investment Advisors and Portfolio Managers are knowledgeable on a wide range of investments available and are encouraged to recommend what truly makes sense for their clients for the long term. “Our Investment Advisors are free to build portfolios that best suit the unique needs of their clients. Our client support is in-house, allowing us to offer a higher degree of personalization in the value-added administrative services that our clients have come to know.” says Debra Hewson, “building portfolios is our business, but building relationships is our strength. We put the needs of our clients first – always.” In Odlum Brown’s Kelowna office, located high up in the Landmark VI tower, are a diverse group of advisors from an array of professional backgrounds. Among them are four unique women, whose individual experience and personalities offer clients the ability to truly find the right advisor to address their needs and help them preserve and grow their wealth for generations. Vicki Presley Vicki is the veteran. Her career in financial services began in the 1970s, and she joined Odlum Brown in the Vancouver office in 1993. She moved to Kelowna within a year of joining the company, and five years later became an Investment Advisor. “It’s been a wonderful experience, helping clients achieve their financial dreams,” says Vicki. As Vicki prepares to retire in late 2019, she is still working hard for her clients. Often, her new clients are the children of people that she has been working with for many years. “It’s been wonderful to serve the next generation of investors,” says Vicki. “I love helping young people get started. ‘The sooner, the better’ as I like to say, and everyone can start somewhere.” As she looks back on her career with Odlum Brown, Vicki appreciates everything that has made the company exceptional in the financial services industry. When she started out, independent investment firms were not unusual. Over the years, banks have purchased many firms, bringing them in-house and often removing their independence. “For some firms, it’s now about sales quotas and doing what is best for the company, not the client,” says Vicki. “It’s never been like that at Odlum Brown, and that hasn’t changed. We’re here for our clients’ best interests, not our bottom line.”
Colette Kuemper A true mama bear, Colette cares deeply about her clients. She is vocal about keeping them on track. “When I was young, I had a bad experience as a new investor,” says Colette. “That unfortunate incident fueled my desire to help people so they wouldn’t have anything like that happen to them.” 23 years later, she hasn’t lost sight of her need to help others. Every day, her goal is to help her clients get ahead. Like her colleagues, she is very active in her clients’ financial lives. “I want to know what people’s goals and dreams are, so I can help them get there,” says Colette. “I am very protective of my clients, and I am not afraid to speak the truth.” Colette has always made a point of putting her clients’ interests first. “It’s always about what is best for them, not me,” says Colette. Colette works with investors of all kinds, coming from many diverse backgrounds. Whether you’re a working professional, an entrepreneur or a busy family, she can provide the advice and guidance you need to get where you need to go. “Everyone strives to be financially secure and it’s my job to help make that happen,” says Colette.

Jennifer Thorne A former lawyer, Jennifer has a big, energetic personality that she loves to share with her clients. A hands-on advisor, she is a source of investment knowledge and advice for her clients – seeing the big picture and how all the parts of a portfolio need to work together. “I love to work with highly motivated entrepreneurs, professionals, and busy families who are working hard to achieve big things,” says Jennifer. “I want my clients to make money with their money, and I provide the advice and guidance to do just that.” Her investment philosophy is simple: her clients come first. “I care deeply about my clients, both as clients and as people,” says Jennifer. “Through frequent contact, I get to know them well so that I can help them make financial decisions that not only allow them to live their best life, but that also align with their personal priorities and values.” In fact, Jennifer’s clients often ask her advice on all manner of things – from decisions about buying or selling a home, their next career move, their children’s education, or how and when to retire. Ultimately, Jennifer is dedicated to responsible stewardship of her clients’ investments. She knows their hard work has produced financial gains, and she wants their success to continue in their investments. “My success is a reflection of my clients’ success,” she says. “When my clients do well, it’s an immense source of pride for me.”
Angela Gordon Prior to joining Odlum Brown, Angela spent many years working across North America and Europe as a strategic consultant. Her work was focussed on customer service, and that broad experience helps guide her career at Odlum Brown. “I have learned throughout my career that you don’t lead with numbers, you lead with people,” says Angela. “It’s the people that matter, and I work to build authentic connections with every client I serve.” Her people-first mentality drives Angela as she works to build secure financial futures for her clients. She prides herself on being a strategic thinker and a strong communicator – thinking about the big picture and breaking it down for easy understanding. She is also very committed to helping women create financial security. “Even today, women are underserved by financial services, and I am here to change that,” says Angela. “Odlum Brown, and its independent focus, helps me do that every day.” Angela doesn’t just provide transparent, relevant advice – she’s also approachable and fun. “I like to laugh and have fun. Investing doesn’t have to be dry,” she says. “I build warm, friendly and sociable relationships with everyone I work with.” Odlum Brown Limited

On December 8th, the Grand 10 theatre was transformed into a festive pajama party, hosting two hundred ladies as they came together for a Christmas movie night. The goal of the evening was to raise funds towards an additional blanket warmer for the chemotherapy unit at BC Cancer, to ensure that each patient gets a heated blanket during treatment.
W
hy is a blanket warmer so needed? Patients often spend many hours receiving treatment and can become chilled easily, with many going through multiple blankets. Think about getting a good hug from a friend you haven’t seen in a long time – that is exactly the type of comfort a warm blanket provides. The passion for the cause was contagious, with many ladies sharing hugs and stories of their experiences with cancer.
No attendee went home empty handed, as each person received a swag bag filled to the brim with goodies donated by local businesses. Twenty lucky ladies scored a prize after receiving ‘golden tickets’ in their bags before the film ‘Four Christmases’ started. The attendees from the event left feeling festive and happy, knowing they got to be apart of something bigger than just a Christmas night. The event was put on by mother and daughter duo, Sheri and Marissa Pineau with the help of many friends. Both women spend hours a week volunteering at BC Cancer and knew how great the need was for an additional blanket warmer. With the help of very generous local businesses and attendees, the event was successful in their goal of raising enough money to purchase an additional warmer. 48
