THE ALPHABET SOUP OF MENTAL HEALTH CREDENTIALS BY DR MICHELLE DARICHUK
One of the most common questions I’m asked when I tell people I’m a psychologist is “what’s the difference between a psychologist, a psychiatrist and other mental health service providers such as counsellors or therapists?” If you don’t know the difference you’re not alone! This can make deciding which professional will best suit your needs difficult. Here are some of the key differences between psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors and therapists. PSYCHOLOGIST In Manitoba, the title of psychologist is protected by law and reserved for individuals who hold a doctoral degree, pass both a written and oral licensing exam and must have worked under the supervision of a more senior psychologist for a certain period of time. This entire process is quite extensive and typically requires 10 years of university. While some psychologists pursue an academic or research career, others go on to register as a psychologist with the Psychological Association of Manitoba and then receive the title of Registered Psychologist. They continually renew their registration and licensing on an annual basis and complete continuous training throughout their careers. Registered clinical psychologists are able to complete comprehensive psychological assessments of clients, diagnose, provide treatment for diagnosable disorders as well as address mental health concerns such as emotional and psychological struggles that are interfering with the quality of life an individual wants to lead. Psychologists do not prescribe medication but may work alongside psychiatrists and physicians to collaborate when medications are recommended. 22
MINT Westman
PSYCHIATRIST Psychiatrists are medical physicians who first receive their medical degree, then go on to complete a residency in psychiatry specializing in psychiatric problems and mental health. Psychiatrists are unique as they are the only mental health professional that can prescribe medication to clients. For this reason, your GP may prefer to refer you to see a psychiatrist if medication becomes a part of your individual treatment plan. Psychiatrists often work in hospital settings or in a setting linked with the health care system (I.e. Community Mental Health, psychiatric centres), however some psychiatrists also have therapybased practices, particularly those in private practice.
COUNSELLORS AND THERAPISTS Many counsellors have a bachelor’s degree which takes approximately 3- 4 years of university to complete. Many also go on to complete a master’s degree. Counsellors come from a wide variety of backgrounds and the term may be used by many professions across different fields such as social work, psychiatric nursing, occupational therapy, guidance counsellors, etc. Counsellors can be found working in a variety of settings from private practice to governmentfunded community and hospital programs. Many also provide counselling and therapy services related to mental health concerns and mental illness. Although the term “counsellor” or “therapist” is not regulated across many
provinces in Canada, many employers require certain qualifications before they hire an individual to fill a mental health provider role. BUYER BEWARE: Being able to help others is an aspiration for many. Unfortunately, not everyone who claims to provide counselling or therapy is qualified or capable of doing so. If you are in doubt, it is appropriate to ask any mental health professional about the education they received, and if they are licensed by their regulating provincial body. For individuals who have spent years going through the proper training and licensing requirements, this is a source of pride and they would be happy to share the information with you! MINT Westman

WELLNESS IS A STATE OF BEING YOU CAN ACHIEVE BY BROOK THALGOTT PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78
Dr. Michelle Darichuk is happy to celebrate the opening of her psychology practice in Brandon. A rural Manitoban for most of her life, Michelle moved to Brandon in July and has made the welcoming city home. Since her arrival, she has managed to create a thriving and successful private psychology practice in Brandon. “I am so excited to introduce my private psychology practice which officially opened on September 4, 2018,” says Michelle. “Psychology is not just my career - it’s my passion. In my own humble opinion, I have the best job in the world.” ichelle is a licensed clinical psychologist with over 25 years of experience, having provided specialized psychological services to rural and northern Manitoba including therapy, assessment, diagnoses, and consultation services. After she earned her Bachelor’s degree at Brandon University, she went on to complete her Masters and Doctoral degrees in Hawaii. Michelle has a broad range of experience working with children, adolescents, adults and couples. She has practiced in medical, psychiatric, community, forensic, educational and private settings.
M
Michelle’s practice has been 25 years in the making. “I have had plenty of time to think about what I wanted to offer and the ‘vibe’ I wanted to create,” says Michelle. “I‘m literally living my dream.” She began with a single word: wellness. It’s in the name of her practice – Dr. Darichuk Psychology and Wellness Centre – and that is deliberate. “Some people may feel intimidated to access a psychologist because they may associate our profession only with ‘visible or severe’ mental illness,” she says. However, a psychologist can be used for prevention, treatment, management, or improvement in a variety of areas. “When we talk about mental health, we’re talking about our mental well-being: thoughts and feelings, emotions, problem-solving and overcoming difficulties. 24
MINT Westman
Health isn’t an on/off switch,” says Michelle. Everyone can agree that there are different degrees of physical health with a continuum ranging from good health to poor health to severe illness or disability – just like mental health. That’s because mental health issues and illnesses – like other health problems – are often episodic, meaning there are times of ill health and times of better or good health. Taking care your mental health is extremely important. Whether you are doing well overall but have one area that needs attention, or barely keeping your head ‘above the water’, Michelle’s practice welcomes you. She sees children, adolescents and adults as well as couples for relationship therapy and affair recovery. “I would love to help you bounce back from life’s challenges, transition through difficult phases, and reduce the symptoms that are interfering your life,” says Michelle. If you’re hesitant to ask for help, that’s okay. Everyone needs help now and then. With Michelle, you can identify your goals and your time together will be individualized to provide the quality care you need. With a compassionate, down-to-earth approach, you can work with Michelle in a confidential, discreet, culturally sensitive and non-judgmental environment. You’ll feel safe to talk in office space that feels more like a living room than a clinic. “Having lived in rural Manitoba for most of my life, I understand your need for privacy and discretion and have taken measures to ensure my practice is set up so ‘no one knows your business’,” assures Michelle. Finally, Michelle wants you to feel what she already knows: things can get better. You can learn more about Michelle’s practice at drdarichuk.com. For appointments, please call their office at (204) 725-4174 and her friendly receptionist will assist you. LIFEBALANCE is there such a thing…… BY JENN SHIELDS
W
ork-Life balance, Work-Home balance, plain old Life balance seem to be a trending topic. Living in a culture that encourages hustle, it is no surprise the amount of burnout we see and how balance is shifting to the forefront of everyones mind. But the questions really remain, what exactly are we trying to achieve, and is this attainable? We tend to refer to “Balance” as a destination. Suggesting once we arrive there we will always be there. But is it? It is important to recognize that life is fluid, ever-changing. And maybe to acknowledge that “balance” is not something to achieve, but rather an ongoing practice of mindfulness and self-reflection. Here are some suggestions of how to define what exactly balance means for you, and how to can create a plan to live more in alignment;
ONE Perhaps it is time to give ourself permission to be exactly as you are. That’s right! Instead of focusing on what we want to do/be, or did not do, or what others think we should do/be, we just accept ourselves. Simply acknowledge that you are a human doing the best you can. This is a powerful way to help us figure out where we want to go.
TWO Get real with yourself. What is recharging you, and what is draining you? Keeping in mind it is completely possibly for things in your life to do both. Remembering #1, and letting go of expectations, and being completely honest about what is bringing energy in, and what is taking energy out. Some things that are energy depleting in our lives, we cannot change. But there may be some of these things we can change. And chances are we could all use a little more time doing the things that help to refuel us, even if it is just committing to 30 minutes a day of something that is completely restorative. THREE Being okay with saying NO! As we scan through our list of energy draining things from #2, maybe it’s time to take a closer look and allow ourselves to step back from some things. It is important to remember that we can do anything, but we cannot do everything. Give yourself the opportunity to rest, and to rest in whatever way will refuel you. We cannot pour from an empty cup, so it will benefit not only yourself but all those in your life if you take care of yourself.

“Our family discussed how we would work with the idea of bringing Astoria Pizza back, and slowly, it became obvious to me that I needed to be part of it.” Toula has the restaurant business in her blood. Along with her business partner, Brock, who was also interested in becoming a part of this new idea. Armed with Astoria’s beloved recipes, they set out to find a new location for Astoria Pizza and bring the legend back to Brandon. The new Astoria Pizza & Pasta, at 1650 Park Avenue, has a brand-new look and feel for patrons young and old to enjoy, with the same great food it served for so many years. The
fabulous pink lounge is a great place for happy hour or a night out with friends. The menu retains its classic Astoria Pizza charm, with some fantastic new additions from Toula. “Our specialty pizzas are a fresh new spin on our classic recipes,” says Toula. On the menu, you’ll find delicious new pizza creations such as the Spicy Toula, made with sweet Thai chili sauce, breaded chicken, bacon, pineapple, banana peppers, black olives, red onions and green peppers. Or, try out the Chicken & Garlic Gourmet, featuring chicken, garlic, mushrooms, tomato, red and green onions, Greek seasoning and creamy garlic sauce. The Tarzy is a delight, combining pizza and the taste of a bacon cheeseburger, made with bacon, beef, cheddar cheese and burger mayo, topped with pickles. No matter what you pick from the menu, dining in or taking out, you can be assured that the same love and attention is in every dish – just like it was so many years ago. “My passion is great food, and I am so happy to be
sharing my family’s recipes with Brandon again,” says Toula. “It’s like coming home for me.” Astoria is very excited to announce their LUNCH everyday menu. It includes an unlimited soup and salad bar, during lunch from 11 am to 2 pm, and which is also available at supper from 4 pm to 7 pm. A long time dream of Meaghan’s, Farmhouse 50 opened its doors just a few short months ago in June. “I stumbled across the perfect space, and my husband encouraged me to finally take the step into entrepreneurship,” says Meaghan. “I wanted to create a space to spotlight Manitoba-made products for years, and now I have.” The list of gorgeous goods found in-store is lengthy. For the home, you’ll find string art, barnboard décor, pottery, dream catchers, candles and signs. You can browse beautiful kitchenware including coffee mugs, wine glasses, pottery and even beeswax wraps (a great alternative to plastic wrap). Love to cook? How about including Manitoba-made mustards, preserves, honey, quinoa and baking mixes on your menu. Treat yourself and your skin to locally-crafted soaps, skin care and essential oils. You can even dress local, with apparel for the kids, plus purses, handbags, scarves, mittens and hats – and even jewellery to accessorize. With the holidays around the corner, Farmhouse 50 is also your destination for finding the perfect gift. With more than 50 vendors from around the province and the country, you’re bound to find something for everyone on your list. The store has already developed a committed fan base for not only its beautiful wares, but also its delightful café. Farmhouse 50 is a place to dine for lunch, a snack or to

We’ve added some warmth to this kitchen by using Caribou Solid Antique Oak for the island countertop.
Cambria® Quartz is a wonderful countertop surface, especially for around sinks. Two different cabinetry colors, Moreno (on the sink cabinets) & Ebony Black (on the island cabinets), were used to complement the era of the house play off the original black & white checkered floor.

Owners Maryke and Sasha McCarty are young entrepreneurs, happy to keep Pantages serving the community for years to come. “We’re striving to continue to grow Pantages and continue its long-term success,” says Maryke, who has many talents as a stylist – with a specialty in blonde hair. Sasha, who began her career in 1997, has worked as both a stylist and an educator. At Pantages, they are both working behind the chair and their presence in the salon is constant. “That’s what keeps us on top,” says Sasha. “We have a wonderful team of stylists and spa professionals that we are proud to have alongside us.”

DELIVERING PERSONALIZED & UNIQUE ENTERTAINMENT EXPERIENCES Celebrating 9 Amazing Years BY TRIDENT MUSIC
Our Trident family of DJs, event hosts, Cinematographers and entertainment experts is renowned for our code of excellence, uncompromising integrity, and meticulous attention to detail. Where did it all start? started making music on my laptop when I was 17 years old. This organically led to the path of being a DJ and I’ve never looked back since. It has never felt like a job. Ever. And I’m very grateful for that. I joke with my staff all the time. “We get paid to party with people. Name a profession better than that. I’ll wait!”
I
TRIDENT MUSIC - Packed dance floors with guests of all ages, and smiles from wall to wall, is what it’s about for us. Personalized and unique entertainment experience. That’s our tagline because it’s all about personalization of every detail possible, to ensure that unique wedding visions are brought to life for the people who trust us with one of life’s biggest moments. We will create a stress-free entertainment experience that you will never forget. From intimate local weddings to night life inspired ragers, our team of entertainment professionals utilize a unique and modern approach that will keep you and your event in the spotlight. As a team of savvy event architects, we are committed to creating visually stunning experiences with an old-school sophistication and a new-school edge. From world-class music entertainment to breathtaking lighting services, we will ensure your vision of a flawless event is brought to life. At our core, we are a culture of innovation and flair, so no challenge is ever too big and no detail is insignificant. TRIDENT FILMS - A division of Trident that at its core is about story telling. 2012, is when I saw a wedding film on the internet about two people and I fell in love with how it was all put together. I had no idea who the couple was, but at the end of the 6 minute and 10 seconds, I felt as if I was part
of their story. I thought to myself, we work with couples who are just as much in love. Why can’t we tell their story? So 5 years of research, learning and investment later, we started the division focused on weddings. Weddings personify originality and nostalgia. Being born in the generation that was raised on MTV, nothing makes me happier than for my couples to look back at their wedding as a music video rather than hours of footage from every second of the day. It’s the highlights we remember; and we try to capture the perfect medley of those moments on your special day. When it comes to our wedding films, we strive to produce an honest, rad, and highly-edited film that captures not only the emotion from the day but the fun you have as well! By the end of the day, we want you to feel like we’ve been friends for years! When we can come together like this, that’s when we can capture those honest and real moments. One of our biggest pluses is we love collaborating with other vendors and know exactly how to work alongside your photographer. We are always down to get weird and do something that strays from the “norm”. Thank you to everyone who has given us the opportunity to work with them. We are grateful beyond words. Here’s to the beginning! Trident - Music | Films | AV 204.573.2678 | rhoni@tridentmusic.ca tridentmusic.ca
