Darling Local Designers A Review of Vancouver Fashion Week 2015 BY BRANDI PARNELL PHOTOS BY ED NG PHOTOGRAPHY
BC DESIGNERS
DAY 2 CONNALLY MCDOUGALL
The growing exhibit of Canadian and international fashion designers hit the runway once again for Vancouver Fashion Week 2015. This year’s guest engagement was dressed in social media from head to beautifully clad toe. An array of fabrics, colors and style statements filled the venue and invisible walk-in closets everywhere. This year’s trends included hats, gloves, wide wool pants and layers. But perhaps the most exciting aspect of the week was the incredible style brought forth by our very own BC designers.
Known for beautifully feminine womenswear and his men’s streetwear collection, McDougall set models enveloped in earthy accents against an equally impacting backdrop of Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’. Modern met vintage for outfits that were street-worthy yet statement pieces dotted with gold and orange.

The formal women’s collection was trip back in time to a social scene from the 60s and 70s with retro glamour, high-waisted pieces and embellishments creating a vignette of flowy feminine feminine wear
DAY 5 Think effortless, youthful clothing styled for the fashion conscious, young woman. The line featured Aztec prints, oversized scarves, cable knit sweaters and plaids - all major themes. Perfect for layering, suffused with style from the 70’s, Rowe’s collection is proof vintage fashion is making a modern comeback.

Wardrobe Matters “You can have anything you want in life if you dress for it.” —Edith Head
Spend time with the casually-sophisticated Tracy Hutton and you’ll be enchanted by the British-Canadian’s lilting accent and her commitment to helping women feel and look their best. Owner of Jigsaw Clothing Co. in Kelowna’s eclectic Pandosy Village area, Tracy Hutton has brought European designer lines to the area for nearly eight years. We’ve asked Tracy for her fashion insight and wise approach to finding ‘just-right-look’ which is far more about us—than about the clothes.
ONE “The first point of consideration is how you define your
individuality. In other words, how do you see yourself?’ Knowing how you wish to brand yourself to the outside world is the best place to start; followed by the functionality of your lifestyle. From here we have a springboard to a great wardrobe.”
TWO “Next, I truly believe we need to wear clothing that accentuates our body. If we choosing flattering cuts, we make the clothes; the cliché does not make us. THREE “Then, it’s about body type and proportions. We all come in unique, wonderful shapes and nothing is sexier than a confident woman. The great thing about fashion today is you see all sizes and silhouettes; from leggings and skinny jeans to wide-leg culottes and pants; from short fitted skirts to long straight ones; oversized sweaters to streamlined tunics. Choose well and you will be fashionable and feel amazing.” FOUR “If done right, layering never goes out of style. It doesn’t have
to be oversized. Layering works on all body types and for a gamut of occasions. From a hand-holding walk to a formal evening out in a pair of gorgeous heels; the only consideration is that layering needs to be accomplished in the right proportions.” Our philosophy at Jigsaw is not only should you look beautiful when you walk out the door but that your clothes should feel great against your skin too. We select beautiful fabrics and quality items to withstand the test of time and trends. Tracy Hutton began her more than 20-year career in fashion in the UK. She travels internationally on buying trips to Italy, London, New York, LA and Las Vegas. Her commitment is to quality designer lines at varying price points. Jigsaw is an intimate, ambient boutique where top shelf customer service is paramount for loyal and new shoppers. Her passion for helping women look and feel gorgeous is akin to her appreciation for the very best textiles including linens, silks, cashmere and merino wools. “LOVE WHO YOU ARE” beautiful | hopeful | connected BY MELANIE FURLONG PHOTOS BY NICK LANGDON AND COURTESTY OF RAW ATHLETICS
f investing in you while wearing responsibly made clothing and looking your best is your jam, it’s time to check out “raw atheletics”. Michelle Welch, a yogi, opened the store in 2011. “raw” specializes in offering the hottest yoga, dance, gym, flow, swimming and surfing apparel from exclusively North American brands.
I
As a busy mother, Welch found she was often on the road with her children until 8 or 9 pm every night. “There came a point every afternoon when I just felt so uncomfortable in my clothes; I wanted to go home and and put on more comfortable clothes,” she says. “I wanted to find clothes that looked cool and trendy but I also wanted comfort all day long.” Welch found those clothes and opened shop in downtown Kelowna. Since then, she says, “raw athletics” has taken on a life of its own.

“A lot of people have the misconception that ethicallymade clothing is bland and unflattering,” says Welch. “But it doesn’t have to be that way. These brands are working with great designers and producing really cool clothes. When you buy these North American-made clothes, you are making a huge impact on our economy and your own ecological footprint,” says Michelle who is conscious of ‘doing her part.’ One of “raw athletics” main brands is Hard Tail, manufactured in southern California with U.S. fabrics and hardware. The brand is popular coast-to-coast in the U.S. and is known for its one-of-a-kind tie-dyed products. Each piece is actually dyed by hand and offers its own characteristics and variations. Another brand made even closer to home is Tonic from Vancouver. The company is committed to avoiding the use of
toxic processing chemicals assuring cleaner, healthier materials against your skin. Other great lines manufactured in California include Body Language, Electric and Rose, Teeki, and Wildfox. With some other accessories in store made from other parts of the world, 90 per cent of the merchandise at “raw athletics” is from North America. One line “raw” also carries that is sure to move dancers is Wear Moi. Wear Moi fashions are known for their uniquely stylish details and amazingly soft, comfortable fabric. Most Wear Moi garments are created in stretch cotton or soft microfiber that fit like a second skin. With sales associates that shares Michelle’s beliefs for better living, your experience at “raw athletics” is guaranteed to be fun and soul-serving. “I aim to hire the best people and train them closely to cater to people in the store. We spend our time in a relaxed, easy atmosphere, filled with good people and great music.”
“I hear all the time that people really love it here. They appreciate the staff that we have and how well we look after our guests. We have a good vibe here.” The most fulfilling part of her business for Michelle is knowing she’s supporting her philosophy of living an ethical life and feeling good about where she’s headed. “Horrible situations occur overseas. We don’t want to support or add to that. By buying in North America and especially Canada, we support the local economy while maintaining superior quality. An inspiring and unique boutique that offers fun clothing specific to yoga, dance, gym, swimming, surfing, flow, movement, and just being – you can be an individual – with a good heart. Stop by the store to see and feel brands that believe in sustainability!! “raw athletics” wants to inspire the world practice self-love. xoxo raw athletics 263 Bernard Ave, Kelowna | 778.484.5469 Raw69-athletics rawathletics

Cleansing 101 BY KATHLEEN TREADGOLD, OWNER GLOW JUICERY KELOWNA
n life, cleansing is a natural process for our bodies. It can happen when we sleep, are ill and when we sweat during exercise. However these are very mild ways for our bodies to detox. If you are noticing blemishes, body odor, bloating, or fatigue, these are signs form your body that you may need to give yourself a break and reboot your system.
I
Juice cleanses are an excellent way for people to detox while getting an adequate amount of nutrients. Because the insoluble fibre is removed in juices, our bodies absorb the nutrients within 15 minutes of drinking them. Once the nutrients enter our blood, the cleansing process begins by flushing out toxin build up. Giving our bodies a break from digesting processed foods will help us to maintain a healthy digestive tract and a clearer mind. Every person is unique, which means cleansing will be a different experience for everyone. Some people respond really well with cleansing on a seasonal basis, monthly basis or yearly basis. Because of our unique genetic makeup, there is no way to tell which is the best option for you. Depending on your current lifestyle, we can suggest what type of cleanse and the duration of the cleanse; however, the ultimate sage is you. It is extremely important for every individual to be in-tune with their body and to listen to cues from their body. Supporting our clients and their cleansing journey along the way provides valuable information to us and also lets our clients feel comfortable and supported.
20
MINT Kelowna
Once you have decided that you are ready to do a juice cleanse, the first step is to pre-cleanse. This will also allow your body and mind to get ready to detox and will also help decrease your detox symptoms. Pre-cleanse rituals consists of cutting out gluten, dairy, meat, processed foods/ sugar, coffee and alcohol. If a client eats these on a regular basis, we recommend they take a couple of days to cut these out slowly. We also recommend drinking a significant amount of alkalizing water and starting each morning with warm lemon water. One of the best methods to make juice is through a process called cold-pressed juicing. This is a slow and careful process of hydraulically extracting fruit and vegetable juice. The result is the highest quality plant-based nutrition available. It is the freshest tasting juice possible and you can literally see the difference in clarity as opposed to other methods of juicing. Cold press juicers press thousands of pounds of produce to extract the juice while preserving its vitamins, enzymes, trace minerals and overall nutrients up to five times more than any other juicer. Because cold press juicing is so precise with its process of extraction, there is minimal air and heat so very little oxidation occurs. This means you can enjoy your cold pressed juice up to 72 hours after extraction. Our hope is to bring inspiration and motivation to every person wanting to feel empowered about what they put into their body. Food is Medicine. Food is Fuel. HAPPY CLEANSING! MINT Kelowna

Overlooked Causes
of weight loss resistance BY DR. CHELSEA GRONICK, ND
24
MINT Kelowna
Weight loss resistance is the term I use to describe the common syndrome I see in people who fail to lose weight despite a healthy diet and exercise program. As a naturopathic doctor I recommend taking a deeper look at any metabolic, hormonal, or physiologic imbalances that may be causing your body to hold onto excess weight. If you’ve been working hard to lose weight but aren’t seeing the results, consider these possibilities.
What if your health and weight loss struggles really aren’t your fault? What if by doing a few things differently, you could jumpstart your weight loss?
1. FOOD ALLERGIES
2. LOW THYROID
Hidden food intolerances are the most common culprit for weight loss resistance. The top offenders include gluten, dairy, soy, corn, eggs and sugar. These foods can cause irritation and inflammation that keeps our immune system constantly fired causing us to feel puffy and bloated. Once the immune system is thrown off, metabolic damage makes weight loss impossible.
When thyroid hormone levels are low, our metabolism slows down and weight loss stops. Our thyroid can be negatively impacted by many factors including high cortisol, mineral deficiencies, toxins and food allergies. If you suspect a thyroid problem, make sure to get comprehensive testing to ensure your levels are in optimal range.
3. HORMONE RESISTANCE The top three hormonal causes of weight loss resistance are estrogen dominance, insulin resistance and high cortisol. In addition to proper hormone balance, we also need to consider hormone resistance. Once it has set in, no amount of bio-identical hormones or dieting will help. The body adjusts by raising your hormone levels and ultimately slowing your metabolism. The solution is to reset the efficiency of your hormones by repairing and growing new hormone receptors.
4. TOXICITY Numerous studies have shown environmental toxins interfere with hormones and weight loss. Toxins are stored in our fat cells, blocking fat burning hormones. I start anyone who’s struggling with weight loss resistance on a 28-day metabolic detox; it’s the best way to improve liver function and rid any accumulated toxins safely and effectively while speeding up weight loss efforts.
5. SLEEP
6. STRESS
Less than 8 hours of sleep impairs weight loss by increasing hormones that signal hunger, which leads to overeating and cravings for starchy, sugary foods.
When we’re under high stress, our adrenals release cortisol, our stress-handling hormone. Chronic stress leads to high cortisol and eventually cortisol resistance, which blocks the function of your other key hormones and leaves you feeling tired, burnt out and weight loss resistant.
7. EXCESSIVE EXERCISE
Dr. Chelsea Gronick is a naturopathic doctor with expertise in helping patients with thyroid and hormone imbalances and weight loss resistance. She has a medical practice in downtown Kelowna.
Studies have shown long duration, high intensity cardio, such as training for a marathon, is one of the worst things you can do for weight loss because it chronically elevates cortisol levels, which favor fat storage over fat burning. The best types of exercise for weight loss combine high intensity, circuit-style weight training (30 minutes or less) with low intensity exercise like walking, biking and yoga. HERE’S TO KICK-STARTING YOUR HEALTH AND IGNITING YOUR WEIGHT LOSS!

A STYLE FOR SMILES – Innovation in Dentistry at Simply Amazing Smiles BY BRANDI PARNELL
“Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.” MOTHER TERESA
PHOTOS BY PAULINE BOLDT
A NEW CULTURE OF CARE oday, modern dentistry boasts beautiful aesthetics. No longer do patients have to dread sitting in cramped waiting areas, reading outdated magazines on cold, uncomfortable chairs. But beautiful office decor is not the only point of differentiation at Simply Amazing Smiles.
T
“We want our patients to know and feel that we approach dental care in a very unique way. Dentistry and hospitality go hand-in-hand at our office. We want them to see how different their experience can be and what they can expect from us,” says owner/dentist, Dr. Trevor Morhaliek. Oral health is critical but so too is the holistic way in which they approach patient care. Their dedication can be seen throughout the office from the refreshingly calm, relaxing environment to the conscientious way they schedule appointments. Further, there is an obvious mindset of creating

an inviting environment from the soothing scent of warm aromatherapy towels to complimentary mini-massages, and also the personalized digital entertainment in their ambient media room and treatment suites. In fact, the facility looks and feels nothing like a conventional dental office at all. They’ve even coined their largest and most luxurious room the ‘super suite.’ “It’s where we do our more comprehensive treatments such as smile makeovers.” Each room is beautiful, spacious and private. Morhaliek says, “We believe that privacy and confidentiality are important in dentistry just as in any professional medical environment.” But that’s not all; at Simply Amazing Smiles the dental team aspires to make each visit to the dentist as enjoyable as possible. Sound absurd? Think again. The team has implemented a Culture of Care philosophy, which focuses not only on the finest clinical care, but also on making each patient feel like a guest.
“No one likes waiting, especially at the dentist, so we are extremely sensitive to how we manage appointments,” says Morhaliek who goes on to say, “by slowing it down and scheduling only one patient at a time, nobody waits.” He says their one-on-one approach creates a more relaxing clinical atmosphere, which enables him and his team to be more attentive to each patient. “ We really work hard to eliminate wait times out of respect for our patients. They appreciate that.” Naturally, Dr. Morhaliek offers a complete gamut of disciplines in general dentistry from preventative therapies and minor restorative treatments to more comprehensive treatments, straight through to smile rehabilitation and high aesthetics. “Smile enhancement is one of my greatest passions in dentistry. I have focused much of my extra training in this field because it is so satisfying to see the emotional transformation when a patient sees their new smile for the first time.” For him and his team, there is no greater satisfaction than a patient smiling with confidence.

Dr. Morhaliek explains, “The crown is completed start to finish in an hour and 40 minutes, which normally would take about two weeks somewhere else. There are no molds, no temporaries and no set backs – our patients can return to normal activities immediately. They love the convenience.”
Smiles is your dental office for proactive care including gentle cleanings complete with laser-assisted cavity diagnosis. They also offer Invisalign, an impressive orthodontic treatment option barely visible to others. In fact, Dr. Morhaliek was the first general dentist in the Okanagan to embrace this technology and has been beautifying smiles in this way for over a decade. EXPERT ADVICE
Navigating Obstacles for Better Oral Health Perhaps the best part of my job as a dentist is seeing the positive impact dentistry has on the confidence and self-esteem of my patients. It truly changes lives. Sadly, too many people choose to avoid the dentist. While the reasons for this are many, closer inspection reveals the main obstacles aren’t really obstacles at all; at least not anymore.
MYTH #1: DENTAL CARE IS TOO EXPENSIVE. Affordability is a real concern with any purchase, but dental care is a long-term INVESTMENT in your health. In fact, the cost of NOT caring for your smile is far greater, not just monetarily. Neglecting your oral health inevitably leads to pain, mouth odor and tooth loss, not to mention lowered self-esteem, which negatively impacts social and professional opportunities. Most dental issues such as cavities and gum disease start out as small, manageable problems with simple, inexpensive solutions. So why not take preventative measures whenever recommended by your dentist to avoid greater problems in the future? This is the surest way to keep all costs as low as possible. Also, many dental offices now offer interest-free financing options.
MYTH #2: DENTAL CARE IS PAINFUL. Dental procedures have never been more conservative and more comfortable than they are today. New products, techniques and technologies enable your dentist to be more proactive in how they care for your smile; in the long run this means less invasive procedures. For example, special lasers now detect cavities before they can be seen with the eye or even on an x-ray. In other words, the repair is essentially a ‘micro-filling’, an extremely noninvasive solution that requires no anaesthetic, and best of all, is completely painless.
MYTH #3: DENTAL CARE TAKES TOO LONG. In the past, treatments such as crowns took two or more sessions to complete. Today, many dental offices provide these services in a single appointment using advanced CAD/CAM technology. New systems such as this have enabled dentists to perform dental procedures faster and with more precision than ever. As a patient this mean less time in the dental chair and the fewest appointments possible. Take a proactive approach to your dental health to ensure the most affordable, comfortable and convenient care possible. You’ll be glad you did! EXPERT ADVICE
Choosing the Perfect Spectacle Frame “I don’t believe in those theories about a certain style suiting a certain shape of face. Life is too short to worry about such things. If you find a shape you like, have it.” Oliver Goldsmith 1969 Selecting a frame style to complement your natural beauty and portray a desired image can be an exciting endeavor. I agree with Oliver Goldsmith; if you find a shape you like you should have it, but spectacle shape is just one part of the story. Playful colours and edgy fashion-forward designs speak of a bold and vivacious attitude. Classic styling in luxurious materials like horn, wood and gold portray success and sophistication. Retro-inspired designs can be fun and funky. Your choice in eyewear should highlight your best features and play down any aspects you would like to be less noticeable. To accent a feature choose a shape that flows. For example a lovely arched brow is best complemented by a frame with curve on the top, to mimic the brow line. To contrast a feature, choose an opposite shape. For example, add definition and highlight cheek structure on a round face by choosing a more angular, upswept shape. Attention to subtle details, nuances of colour, and innovation in design and materials elevate a frame choice from plain to spectacular. You can add a splash of creativity with colourful eyeglasses that coordinate with your wardrobe or opt for neutral-coloured frames to blend with your skin and hair color for a subtler, but equally amazing look. Contemporary trends in frame design continue with a strong emphasis on lively colours, upswept retro-inspired styles and fuller, deeper shapes. Plastic frames are still very popular but sleek minimalist metals are definitely making a comeback. Whether you follow the trends or pursue the crest of fashion, the ultimate goal is to look and feel gorgeous in your eyeglasses. If you find a frame you like, you should have it!

FIT BODY BOOT CAMP: Burn twice the calories in half the time. BY TONYA LAMBERT PHOTOS BY SHARLA PIKE
Do you want to lose weight? Perhaps you’d like more muscle definition or increased endurance? Most people would like to both look and feel better. However, many think there just isn’t enough time in the day to workout. Who has an extra hour needed to attend a typical fitness class? 38

it Body Boot Camp is not your typical fitness class. Run by Steve Gronick, an internationally-certified fitness coach and personal trainer, Fit Body’s resultsdriven, 30-minute classes are geared for efficiency. Within minutes, you will be sweating and pushing yourself harder than you thought possible. At Fit Body, you will burn twice the calories in only half the time!
F
Steve opened Fit Body Boot Camp in Kelowna in early October. With a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology from the University of Manitoba, three international health and fitness certificates, and all three levels of neurokinetic therapy certification, Steve is a highly-qualified fitness coach who has worked as a personal trainer for the past nine years. “When I first began working as a fitness coach, I did one-
on-one personal training,” says Steve. “I still do some one-on-one training to help with rehabilitation and pain relief. However, I wanted to help as many people as possible achieve their fitness goals, which is why I opened Fit Body.” Fit Body workouts combine high intensity intervals with resistance training that causes an afterburn effect forcing your body to burn fat and calories for up to 28 hours after the workout. Each activity is timed and participants work at their own intensity and ability level. Minimal equipment is used and focus is placed on body-weight exercises. Fit Body is about helping individuals achieve their personal goals in a fun, supportive and challenging communal environment. Working in a group provides motivation, accountability and a fun social dynamic. Classes are co-ed and teenagers are welcome. Every effort has been made to make Fit Body Boot Camp accessible to everyone. There are class times throughout the day: come by before work, at lunch or on your way home. There is a area set up in one corner of the building where children can play while parents get in a quick workout. Members can participate in as many sessions a week as they like but Steve recommends attending 3-5 sessions per week to achieve maximum results. Fit Body is a community-based organization, committed to helping both individuals and the community. During the cool down at the end of each workout, participants are encouraged to share news about upcoming events and charitable organizations. Fit Body will also be organizing fun activities to create awareness and raise funds for local charities. So whether you want killer abs or just a little less flab, Fit Body Boot Camp offers a cost-effective and efficient workout program built to help you achieve the results you desire. Inventing BC Wine
A New History of our Bacchus Bliss. BY PHILIPPE C. GRANDBOIS
he BC Wine world is young. The details of which are well known in the Wikipedia articles and wine blogs everywhere. The history of Father Pandosy, the Mission Hill bells, the deep culture of fruit farming. It is a good story. But, at what point do you start to tell the new history? If the mission bells are in the infancy of the BC region than what is our adolescence?
T
After committing to an education and a career in wine, I land in the Okanagan. With a desire to tell a new story about BC Wine. Here are four subjects to spark conversation.
BC Wine is further organized by grape varietal. Perpetuating the over simplifications of the region. It’s time the consumer gets educated on the dynamic region that is BC Wine. The vineyards pride themselves on terroir and it’s all over the bottles.
MICRO CLIMATES
AGE-ABILITY OF BC WINE
Like much of Canada’s history, it’s broad and vast, and often over simplified. People refer to things generally as “Canadian” and seem to forget how vast a country we are.
Someone once said aging Canadian Wine was a bad idea. Someone then told everybody that idea repeatedly over the past 20 years. Now we have a gap in the Canadian wine library, which is only just coming to light.
British Columbia is the size of France and Italy combined. The BC wine region spans thousands of square kilometres and could envelop every single famous grape region in France.
52
The Similkameen Valley’s weather and soil conditions are vastly different than those of West Kelowna and it shows in the wines. Yet the BC Liquor Distribution Branch stores label it all “BC Wine”(945,000 KM squared). While organizing the “Portugal” section (92,000 km squared) into microclimates.
MINT Kelowna
Wine maker Michael P. Clarke of Clos du Soleil says “With the right balance of alcohol, structure and cellaring, any wine can get better with age.” After
imbibing on the Clos du Soleil Capella, Signature and Saturn from the early 2000’s, you will have no choice but to agree. With maturity in the region comes increasing cellars and the desire to taste age in a region. Some of the regions wines are for instant consumption but a growing number are made to last the test of time.
CANADA WIDE SALES When I landed in the region I was told that most of BC’s Wine isn’t exported out of province due to production quantities. With the niche markets and boutique stores this didn’t make sense. How could volume be the problem with a dozen or so vineyards producing tens of thousands of cases? When you dig a little deeper, you uncover the prohibiting factor. Provincial taxation is keeping prices high. Canada is 9, 985,000 sq. kms., making us the second largest country. When you cross our provincial lines you face tax differences. A movement of winemakers and winery owners are pressuring the BC and Canadian governments for change to alleviate some of those tax differences. With easier and less expensive national trade, we can double the size of our BC Wine Industry – a topic worth getting behind.
MEASURING UP TO INTERNATIONAL WINES While we still don’t have global recognition, we do compare. The best of the region stands tall against
the biggest brands in international competitions with Platinum’s and Double Platinum’s abound, although our Canadian humility tends to trump our accolades. In fact, tucked away on Road 8 in Oliver, Walter Gehringer is a pioneer in BC Wine. Walter who? While the likes of Chateau Mouton Rothschild produces 20,000 or less each year, while Gehringer produces 22,000 or more each vintage.
THE WINE IS DAMN GOOD TOO. Steven Spurrier, renowned wine personality and critic recently tasted, compared and rated BC wines. In his last remarks he said, “My message to British Columbia is that I think you undervalue yourselves, your wines are sensational.”
MOVING IT FORWARD So here is another voice in the fray starting new conversations about the BC Wine industry; let’s write the new history of BC Wine likes its past, boldly. With the challenges of our geography, taxation woes and international comparisons we have much learning ahead of us. American author John Gray famously said, “The process of learning requires not only hearing and applying but also forgetting and then remembering again.” I think we are at the forgetting stage.

ome into the cosy dining room at Blu Saffron Bistro this winter and enjoy great food and value at this chef-owned and operated restaurant.
Located at the Volcanic Hills Winery in West Kelowna, this hidden gem serves a delicious menu to suit every palette. Chef Colin Rayner and his talented sous chef, Marty, prepare popular dishes including prawn & avocado bruschetta, prime rib bahji burger and chicken pappardelle. This year, a few new items were added to the menu, the most popular being the anti-pasto sharing platter. Colin, who was born and raised in England, began his culinary journey at a small college and worked in restaurants around England and Scotland. He then decided to move to Bermuda to further his career in some of the country’s best resorts and hotels, staying for 16 years. While there, Colin represented Bermuda on its culinary team, competing and winning silver in Puerto Rico.
Colin’s heart is truly in his food. He has always had a passion for good local food, picking up many ideas and recipes from local farmers and fishermen on the island of Bermuda and now in the bountiful Okanagan Valley. He brings his international experience and combines it with everything the west coast has to offer. At the Blu Saffron Bistro, he offers lunch and dinner to up to 40 diners inside and up to 80 more in the summer season on the large outside patio featuring breathtaking lake and vine views. The restaurant serves Volcanic Hill wines exclusively, but also offers Tree Brewing beer and Urban Distilleries vodka, gin and whiskey. Front of the house manager, Corey, is very knowledgeable about the wines from next door and can suggest the perfect pairing for each course. Wines are sold by the glass or bottle at reasonable prices. RIGHT CHEF COLIN RAYNER

From their studio in Edmonton, the Fenske family grew their concrete construction company to eventually expand their studio and manufacturing to Kelowna. Over the years, Urban Concrete has worked with architects, designers, builders and homeowners across Canada, into the US and from as far away as Europe. “We are passionate about design,” explains Chris. “We are always experimenting and producing new products. SAY GOODBYE TO CHICKEN CORDON BLEU
GOT A REQUEST?
Because we’re not in real estate, it’s all about food, food, food. From sushi stations to custom-made ice cream sandwiches, nothing says love like mouthwatering nourishment. Long gone is the stuffed chicken breast. Instead, indulge your guests with decadent bites from happy hour through dinner, right up until the gourmet food truck pulls up with thick cut fries, gourmet dipping sauces and baby beef sliders. Food is a time for fellowship and often the start of great beginnings - so let love rain all over your food choices.
Hire a band or a soloist, create personalized playlists that catalogue your courtship. Music has the power to transport us through time; John Denver or Johnny Cash, The Tenors or Tina Turner all enhance the mood and either lure friends onto the dance floor or into a warm embrace. Rock all night or swing low in a sophisticated setting that beckons slow dancing.
SET THE STAGE Choose a venue that is everything you’ve ever dreamed of. Get married beneath the stars, starboard or star struck in a grand ballroom overlooking the lake. Get hitched in a repurposed barn or in between rows and rows of grapes growing into wine. Like your menu, venue is completely customizable. Be choosy; select a location that can execute exactly what you envision from hanging lanterns to uncle Larry.
SPEAKING OF GUESTS You can leave the crowd-pleasing meal and the closed bar during speeches in your bachelor pad. Craft your guest list like your beer offerings; invite top-shelf folk who will support your and your spouse throughout life’s trials. Be choosey – good energy is contagious.
PROPS ARE NOT JUST FOR HOLLYWOOD Lastly, wrap the entire day up in memorable decor. Rent vintage furniture to create the perfect backdrop for a lifetime of anniversaries or surround yourself in seasonal blooms. Accent your venue with beautiful, kitschy and personal props. Build a candy bar enviable by children, display your favourite art, display great works of fiction on every table, rent a photo booth or ride in on a bicycle built for two. Whether you dream of having a chic or charming wedding, you can do it yourself or hire a professional to take care of every detail. The sky is the limit for expression and love. Spend this winter snuggling up to your soon-to-be life partner planning, booking and dreaming up your perfect day. Famous author, Ian McEwan of Atonement said, “I never had a moment’s doubt. I love you. I believe in you completely. You are my dearest one. My reason for life.” LOVE COMPLETELY, HAVE NO DOUBTS.

Chelsea Bussemeier started her first sewing project at the age of 11. Falling in love with fabric awakened her creative talents; by 13 she had designed her first formal gown, a would-be benchmark in her life’s calling.
In tandem, she worked in Hamburg at a bridal boutique alongside a designer as an apprentice seamstress while completing her schooling. She excelled in her program and graduated with honors. “I’ve always loved gowns,” she says with a heart matched for the bridal industry. Not only can she relate to being claimed by many a dress, her empathetic soul has been claimed by the world of fair trade fashion. And so it is no coincidence her bridal boutique, Red Velvet is an ethically conscious company. “We know great quality starts at the beginning,” says Chelsea. “We do our very best to find sustainable fabrics that not only look beautiful but feel incredible on your skin and have as little impact on the environment as possible.” “Our gowns are all constructed of comfortable and breathable materials. Unlike most formal dresses, we choose natural fibers such as silk, cotton and linen, and use natural polymers, which are lighter and more breathable.” Locally made, Chelsea has sewn together her education, experience and ethical practices to create a one-of-a-kind experience for women, and soon men too. She crafts exquisite gowns made to perfectly caress a woman’s body accented with Swarovski crystals and real fresh water pearls.
Eventually Chelsea would like to branch out into menswear and lingerie. In fact, she dreams of a heritage home with different rooms dedicated to different collections – a destination if you will with an atmosphere for all things completely beautiful. For now, she is designing and manufacturing right here in the valley, superior, handmade creations that fit without flaw. “ I want my customers to feel that their one-ofa-kind gown is everything they wished for and know when they leave, that there gown has never been mass produced.” If you would like to have your dress claim you, stop by her boutique Red Velvet Bridal Design for your own personal consultation today.
“Everything about what we do and stand for is authentic,” she says with humility. I absolutely love what I do. I love the one-on-one contact with my customers and I love that dance that comes with getting to know the right combination for a woman’s body, style and personality. It is so rewarding to see her walk out feeling amazing.” Chelsea’s passion is palpable and her vision crystal clear. She prides each gown on high-quality craftsmanship, the finest fabrics and a unique experience with every distinctive item she designs. “I want my customers to feel glamorous in an exclusive dress made for them, as though they’ve walked onto the red carpet of whatever life event they are attending. I want them to feel like the only woman in the place.”

2016 Wedding Cake Trends BY KIRSTEN PRIDHAM OF SUGAR SWEET CAKE COMPANY
Metallics
A trend we first saw in 2015 keeps getting bigger for 2016. This look can be created using any metallic shade, but copper, silver, and most especially gold, are the chosen ones. We see metallics incorporated into sugar flowers as centres, leaves or entire flowers, as well as in geometrics such as dots and stripes. Metallic lace is another romantic option. For an even greater impact, entire metallic tiers or whole cakes can be created!
Ruffles
Be it an entire ruffle covered cake or as an accent tier, ruffles lend a romantic air to any wedding cake. They can be piped using buttercream icing, but more options and styles include fondant and sugar paste creations. A few popular ruffle styles include rosettes, petals, traditional tiered ruffles or a more modern straight edged effect.
All White
This look requires one thing, texture, texture and more texture. A sugary tower of white can come from many sources such as piping, trims, appliquĂŠs, sugar or fresh flowers, lace or the aforementioned ruffles. After all, white never goes out of style.

Naked
Is another trend from 2015 that just keeps bearing at all. These cakes can be either truly naked or coated with a light skim coat of buttercream and adorned with berries, powdered sugar, fresh flowers or a favourite of ours, macarons! This type of cake is beautiful for a natural and/or rustic style wedding.
Lace
More of a classic than a trend, this romantic effect never goes out of style. What is fashionable though is the way we can now incorporate lace onto cakes. Whether used to create texture on an all white cake or eye-catching pop against a contrasting background, it evokes the beauty of a bridal gown. With new techniques, the lace is entirely edible and can be created in many different styles.
Ombre
This is a look we see again and again, with many different styles of cake. From buttercream rosettes, to ruffles and solid tiers, this look can be soft and sweet or bold and dramatic.
Cutting Cakes & Sweets Tables
Replacing the waning cupcake trend, sweets tables and small cakes are steadily gaining popularity. The cakes can be single or multi tiered, simple or elaborate, but are kept small and accented by an abundance of co-ordinating treats. From French macaron and tartlettes, to cake pops and gourmet marshmallows, guests and couples alike love the variety of small treats while still being able to enjoy the traditional cake and ceremonial cutting. Whatever you choose, be sweet to your guests and more so to one another.

A NEIGHBOURHOOD STORE with more than an open door BY TONYA LAMBERT PHOTOS BY LIFE PAUSED PHOTOGRAPHY
reen & Bear It! is an eclectic neighbourhood store with an engaging collective feel. Customers are often met by a most adorable greeter. Lily is a four-yearold chocolate Labrador, whose eyes are as big as her heart. She can be found sitting on the sidewalk tail wagging in happy anticipation as shoppers approach.
G
“Lily loves people and is great with kids,” says owner Chris McAnerney. “It’s not uncommon to look out the window and see a bunch of children piled on top of her, petting her, playing with her and just generally having fun while their parents are shopping and visiting inside the store.” Throughout its 12 years in business, Green & Bear It! has continually evolved. When
McAnerney moved to Kelowna from Toronto 14 years ago, she appreciated the longer growing season. “I started gardening when my kids were young,” she explains. “It’s a great form of stress relief, a sort of mindless meditation mixed with physical labour.” She and her husband saw an opportunity for a store that sold gardening and gift products and so Green & Bear It! was born. The emphasis at Green & Bear It! has evolved from gardening to general gifts with exciting, new product lines being added every year. From quirky giftware to funky jewelry, stunning scarves to puzzles and toys, Green & Bear It! is the perfect place to pick up an on-the-go gift. For the fermented grape nut on your list, there are iced wine jellies from Langley while your very own Lily will appreciate a beaded wooden collar made in Vancouver. Green & Bear It! carries one of the best selections of greeting cards in the city as well as the largest array of Thymes soaps and lotions in the valley. One whiff of Thymes Frasier Fir and you’ll be sitting affront a roaring fire whittling away at your Christmas shopping list. LEFT LILY RIGHT CHRIS MCANERNEY, OWNER WITH DAUGHTER KATIE BAKER

Nearly four years ago, Green & Bear It! added clothing to their wonderful array of products and McAnerney’s friendly, fashionforward daughter Katie Baker joined the staff. “I love working with my daughter,” says McAnerney. “Most people would be surprised to learn Katie is actually a real tomboy whose element is sitting on the lake with her boyfriend, fishing rod in her hand!” This holiday season treat yourself or someone you love to the softest jammies from PJ Salvage sleepwear – you’re sure to get a better sleep! Or find your zen in the Neon Buddha collection or your inner fashionista in C’Est Moi clothing. Their bamboo and bamboo/cotton blend fabrics are as smooth as a glass on the lake in summer but your relationship will last much longer. Family and friends are very important to McAnerney and guide the store’s community philanthropy. “We donate a lot
of items for door prizes and silent auctions in our neighbourhood,” explains McAnerney. “Another project close to my heart is The Rider Cider Ride for Autism. My nephew has autism and my brothers created the event to help raise funds for much needed support resources in Kelowna. Green & Bear It! donates prizes and participates as a team.” Friends and family, great gifts and a happy pooch, you’ll find them all at Green & Bear It! Why Wait TO LIVE YOUR Best LIFE? A Book Review of Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear BY BRANDI PARNELL
She begins her book by asking the question, “What is Creativity?” and answers with, “It is the relationship between a human being and the mysteries of inspiration.” In other words, life is far too precious to be lived as a commodity – find out what inspires you and exploit every last drop.

E
lizabeth Gilbert was first introduced to mainstream book enthusiasts more than a decade ago with her memoir, Eat, Pray, Love, although her works proves she was a gifted writer long before she was a NY Times Best Seller name. Her account on life post-suburbia, a catalogue of truths and self-discovery, sold more than 10 million copies, a book bespoke of insecurity simultaneously met with strength as she came faced with societal expectations head on. While Big Magic does not prescribe to be autobiographical in nature, it is more of a daring venture into the self-help genre by challenging the path to an authentic life. Broken into six sections: Courage, Enchantment, Permission, Persistence, Trust and Divinity, Gilbert writes not just for those who live in the arts but those whose soulful make-up includes a passion for curiosity. Her prose is as gentle as her voice in her podcast that preceded her latest book, Magic Lessons with Elizabeth Gilbert. From the start she dares her readers to step out of monotony and grab life by its lapels. She writes, “Do you have the courage to bring forth the treasures that are hidden within you? She goes on to urge readers to be enchanted to embrace by the quest for discovery, which is where she believes exists the ‘magic’ of life. Creativity is inside of us all. Gilbert encourages life enthusiasts to express that side of us that doesn’t exist within a box, “It is not selfish or crazy or foolish to do so — it is, in fact, the best way to live a satisfying life.” Largely, Big Magic is a book about making time in your life to do something you really love, for no reason other than for the pleasure. Write if writing speaks to you but also take up running, learn to cook, find passion in nature, and express yourself through desire. As expected, Gilbert, true to the openly vulnerable way of being, addresses the ‘Scary, Scary, Scary’ roadblocks we put in our own way; the greatest of which is fear. Gilbert writes, “We all know that when courage dies, creativity dies with it. We all know that fear is a desolate boneyard where our dreams go to desiccate in the hot sun. This is common knowledge; sometimes we just don’t know what to do about it.” Certainly a thought provoking read that leaves you questioning how you spend your spare time. If nothing else, reading Big Magic is time spent thinking of ways to live your best life. Ditch the musts and embrace the maybes in your life. Happy reading.

CHRIS GORMAN: Creating Confidence for Your Financial Future BY THE MINT TEAM PHOTOS BY LIFE OUT LOUD PHOTOGRAPHY
reating a brighter future for his family and his community fueled Chris Gorman’s decision to weave his education, experience and values together to pursue the profession as a financial advisor. He chose Sun Life Financial to support him in his work to help others define and achieve their financial goals.

It is a privilege to be able to extend the same to others to clarify their path to financial control and freedom.” He began his career in international shipping before working in general insurance. Peter MacKay, then Minister of Foreign Affairs, appointed Chris as his executive assistant. Chris recalls fondly his time at Foreign Affairs and its lasting impact. “I witnessed Canada’s global impact and the opportunity that awaits those who are free to pursue their dreams.” Building community and contributing to the next generation inspired Chris to move to Kelowna to work in a senior leadership role at UBC’s Okanagan campus after completing his MBA from UBC’s Sauder School of Business. Keen to make a difference, he successfully sought election in 2011 to the Central Okanagan Board of Education. He topped the polls in his re-election bid in 2014.
