BRANDI PARNELL Yoko Ono said, “Spring passes and one remembers one’s innocence. Summer passes and one remembers one’s exuberance. Autumn passes and one remembers one’s reverence. Winter passes and one remembers one’s perseverance. ” Although this winter has been quite manageable, we’ve persevered. At Mint, we have whittled away hours sipping creativity and warming our spirits with kinship and love. As a child, I recall feeling purely alive and filled with joy at the first sights of spring. It was a time for puddle jumping and daydreaming. It was the chance to explore a new world and venture out once again into nature at a much slower, more methodical, tulip-budding pace. Whether you are fresh from the mountains or coming out of your cocoon, may this issue remind you to embrace the newness around every corner and the innocence of your childhood. Happy Spring Kelowna!

FANCY FOOTWEAR BY JILLIAN HARRIS

Here in Vancouver the weather is already starting to change, the trees blossoming and the footwear changing. I’m ALMOST saying goodbye to my winter boots and hello to little spring booties...ALMOST!!!! These little booties are perfect for the transition from winter to spring. They are cute and fashionable but still provide that extra bit of warmth and grip on the bottom just in case there is one last storm before Spring. I’m all about simplifying things this year and thinking ahead when it comes to footwear... I don’t own many booties and tend to gravitate towards the ones that are versatile. Luckily, Ugg has created these boots with BOTH versatility and fashion in mind. They are perfect for on set of Love It Or List It, day to day, and even lounging around on the weekend. Pair them with some jeans until the weather starts to warm up and then throw them on with a cute spring dress. BOOTS AVAILABLE AT WWW.UGGAUSTRALIA.COM

Get Clear for the New Year BY SHAUNA NYROSE EDITED BY BRANDI PARNELL INSET IMAGE BY DEREK NYROSE PHOTOGRAPHY

ike many families, my husband, kids and I spent some time in early January discussing what we hoped for in 2016. It was good work. We concluded feeling energized as a family and clear about what we will do this year to reach our fullest potential. In our home, this is our version of New Year’s resolutions, which we call setting mindful intentions.

L

Similar to goals or resolutions, intentions can pertain to any area of your life; from love and passion, to health and work/life balance from specific achievements to spiritual exploration and everything in between. Intentions ask us to look deeper into our desires. To set intentions then, you actually have to know exactly what you want; ironically, few of us do. Oftentimes people create resolutions on autopilot. They use current trends, social media and societal pressures to mask lack. Goals are achievement oriented; we aspire to have more, be more, do more! One-size-fits-all goals can be really unsatisfying, largely because we mistakenly equate achievement for what we are really seeking, which is meaning. Intention setting isn’t about lofty, unachievable goals; intentions are formed in our very own hearts. They are generated within the place where we harbour purpose, pain and potentiality. Intentions originate in our truth centre. Wayne Dyer said, “Our intention creates our reality.” And so it becomes clear if we want more in our lives of what we have, we need to keep doing as we are. But if we desire true change, than we need to access what it is we truly desire. And plan for it!

LIFE DOESN’T HAPPEN BY ACCIDENT. I have been with my husband for nearly 20 years and a few years ago, I was missing the sweetness of our pre-children, pre-mortgage, pre-responsible adult romance. One of my personal intentions was to be more aware of the small acts of love shared between he and I. A big part of this process was taking 100 per cent responsibility for how I show up in our relationship; I couldn’t blame him, work or the kids. It’s easy to focus on the have-to’s, the obligations, our roles as parents; but a funny thing happened once I got clear on what I really wanted romantically with my husband. Once I set my own intentions for romance, I began to notice all the kind little gestures, the little touches and the sweetness already in my world. Setting intentions led me straight to gratitude and an awareness of what was already working in my life. And so my advice to you is if you really want to be happier this year, start by getting real about what makes you happy. Take stock of your blessings and build on what you already have. Intentions aren’t about completing an IRONMAN although they may very well be about the road to the finish line. Take a few moments this week and sit quietly, breathe deeply and clear your mind. Consider an area of your life such as family and write down exactly how you intend to implement change. I challenge you to see if you can find where you are not measuring up and then write how you will improve this area of your life. What happens next may surprise you. Happiness, a relative of gratitude, is a by-product of self-awareness. At the end of the year, go back and read it, you might be surprised at how much change can occur in one year. Best of luck, here is to a year of good intentions and even better follow through.

The atmosphere is just down right awesome.” A collection of Valley residents working in tandem to achieve more, SPINCO is more that a great vibe. Owner, Michelle August, knows business and the art of joy riding but what she didn’t know when she opened SPINCO, was that she’d find such passion. Now an instructor herself, Michelle says of her latest venture, “It’s super motivating. We are one team, one bike, always on the same leg, with no one left behind.” With music pumping alongside hearts, it is a party on a bike. It’s approachable, it’s vibrant and best of all it’s fun.

We have you covered.” Their genuine commitment to community is just part of the SPINCO wheelhouse. “Every Monday night at 6:30 p.m. we have a ‘Spin it Forward’ class where proceeds go to support a local charity,” says Michelle. “Last December, along with their riders, SPINCO we raised over a $1000 to support a local family over the holidays. 6 P illars

of hormone health and balance BY DR. CHELSEA GRONICK, ND

24

MINT Kelowna

(Part 1)

Hormone imbalances are an epidemic today. Some of the most common health concerns I see in my practice are related to hormonal imbalance, such as weight loss resistance, insomnia, depression and anxiety, thyroid imbalance issues, headaches, PMS, acne, fatigue, low libido, infertility and menopause. When we talk about hormonal balance, we are referring to the delicate relationship between several hormones including thyroid, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, insulin and cortisol. Because they all interact with one another, too much or too little of any one can disrupt the entire balance. While many factors can contribute to hormonal imbalance, there are ways to better support hormonal health naturally.

1. BALANCE YOUR BLOOD SUGARS Excess sugars and starches in the diet raise blood sugar levels, which leads to elevated insulin levels. In women, this leads to high testosterone levels and in men, it can lead to elevated estrogen. Opting for high fiber foods such as fruits, veggies and legumes, and a reduced sugar and refined carbs approach will help keep your blood sugar balanced and hormones happy. DR. CHELSEA’S TIP: Plan your meals around protein and be sure to include a serving at breakfast, such as eggs or a protein shake. This sets the tone for better blood sugar balance throughout your day.

2. DETOXIFY YOUR CELLS Xenoestrogens are synthetic estrogens found in our environment that mimic estrogens in our body. When we accumulate too many xenoestrogens, the receptors on our cells for other hormones are blocked, leading to symptoms of estrogen dominance such as heavy, painful periods, infertility, excess weight accumulation around the abdomen and weight loss resistance. Our largest sources of toxin exposures come from our water, our food, our air, and especially for women, our beauty products. Opt for organic fruits,

vegetables and animal products; use less plastic and more glass, filtered water, and for women especially, choose organic beauty products to minimize your exposure to hormone disrupting toxins. TIP In addition to lowering your daily exposure to toxins through making better choices, it’s a good idea to go through a metabolic detox program at least twice per year to help the body eliminate accumulated toxins and clean off cell receptors.

3. FOLLOW AN ANTI-INFLAMMATORY, HORMONE BALANCING DIET Dairy is one of the biggest triggers of hormone imbalance because of the hormones found naturally in milk - even if it’s organic, and from the added hormones and antibiotics. Gluten, which is found in grains such as wheat, barley, rye, and spelt is another common offender of hormone imbalance because it can cause inflammation in the body. Both alcohol, including red wine, caffeine and soy can increase estrogens in men and women. TIP Top foods for hormone balance include quinoa, eggs, broccoli as well as leafy green veggies, avocados, almonds, walnuts, green tea, extra virgin olive oil and lean proteins like organic eggs, chicken, fish or beef. Next issue, I’ll share the last 3 pillars for optimal hormone balance. In the mean time, I’ve created a Hormone Quiz to see if hormonal imbalance might be the cause of your health concerns. You can access the quiz here: drchelseagronick.com/hormone-quiz/ If you’ve been struggling with a thyroid, adrenal, or hormone issue, a great first step would be to have your hormones tested by a naturopathic doctor.

Dr. Chelsea Gronick is a naturopathic doctor with expertise in helping patients with thyroid and hormone imbalances and weight loss resistance. She has a medical practice in downtown Kelowna.

EXPERT ADVICE

A Review of Teeth Whitening with Dr. Trevor Morhaliek Considered by most to be an important physical attribute, a bright and beautiful smile also conveys a sense of health and vitality to everyone you meet. While there are many ways to improve a smile, tooth bleaching remains one of the most popular aesthetic treatments in dental practice today. The factors that contribute to discolored teeth are many. Tooth trauma, decay, poor dental hygiene, erosion, consumption of staining beverages and smoking are just a few of the most common culprits. However, prevention is still the best defense against tooth discoloration as most of these factors can be controlled.

HOW DOES IT WORK? Tooth bleaching involves the application of a bleaching agent to the tooth surface. Hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide are the most common bleaching agents. This process can be accelerated using LED or other light sources. The peroxide breaks down staincausing molecules reversing years of accumulated discoloration.

WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS? While over-the-counter whitening products are very accessible, their effectiveness is relatively low. This is largely because a much lower concentration of the active bleaching agent must be used as most of it ends up swallowed. Professional systems are administered by your dentist, enabling them to keep the bleaching agent at its optimal level. This allows them to use a much higher and as a result more effective dose while keeping you safe and minimizing any sensitivity. Professional systems have proven to be the safest and most effective way to whiten your teeth, without any hassles or ingesting of chemicals. Some in-office systems can bring your teeth up to eight shades brighter in less than 90 minutes!

TIPS TO KNOW: • • • •

Tooth bleaching is only effective on natural tooth structure Temporary tooth sensitivity is normal Tooth bleaching is not permanent Tooth bleaching is safest and most effective under the supervision of a dental professional Dr. Trevor Morhaliek BSc., DDS Simply Amazing Smiles Suite 100-1475 Ellis St., Kelowna 250.762.2521

FIVE F.A.C.E.S You Create Your Most Beautiful Face BY BRANDI PARNELL PHOTOS BY BOKETTO PHOTOGRAPHY

ur faces are the first impression we send out to the world. In fact, our face is often a mirror of our consummate self; said to be the windows of our souls and a vision board of emotions. We spend countless hours caring for and working out so we can have younger looking, sexy bodies; yet when our faces age, we immediately head for the cosmetic counter, for Botox, to receive fillers and sometimes even, surgery. Helen Day P.T., A.F.C.I., a doctor in her own right, the founder of Consult - Educate Treat is ready to change the way people prioritize their most impressionable trait.

O

After suffering a major life threatening injury, debilitated and completely engulfed in pain, Helen Day came to the realization she had to act and acknowledge her power. Determined not to live with chronic suffering and fed up with a feeling of helplessness, she did just that. “I managed to find my way out through selfpractice, relying on my vast experience in the fields of physiotherapy and acupuncture. The pain was so excruciating one day she grabbed an acupuncture needle and plunged it into her leg, performing a twisting motion to the muscles surrounding the needle. The pain release was instant and a springboard to the development of her 5 Point Protocol for Chronic Pain. As her condition improved and she returned to her practice, she became increasingly more cognizant of the correlation HELEN DAY

between not only treatment and pain but also treatment and an improved appearance of the area. An increase of blood and nerve supply along with relaxed muscles in a specific area smoothed out the skin causing it to appear younger and fresher. The FIVE F.A.C.E.S program was born.

HELP IS ON ITS WAY!

“I have been helping people get better now for well over 25 years and it never ceases to give me immense job satisfaction to see and hear people feel better,” says Helen.

Forget about spending money on expensive facials, poisonous products, cosmetic treatments or worse, surgery! Instead, save time and money by taking back your power one step at a time. The F.A.C.E.S program is so easy to learn and implement. You start with 12 sessions of handson therapy combined with education so you can improve your face at stoplights, in the bathtub and before bed.

Always trending ahead of the crowd, she has helped close to a million patients achieve body health and facial renewal. Her unique, holistic FIVE F.A.C.E.S skin care program provides long-term health and wellness for your face in a non-invasive, non-surgical manner. More than ever busy professionals, parents with young children, people-on-the-move are bathed in toxins. Stress is at an all-time high, wreaking havoc on the body. As a society we watch every bite that goes into our mouths, we are aware of sun damage to our skin, and we are told to limit alcohol and avoid ingesting chemicals.

Fortunately, the F.A.C.E.S. program is a healthy beauty regime designed around the “greening” of the face. By removing toxins and treating skin from the inside, you can independently reduce wrinkles, improve the health of your skin and have a younger looking, more radiant face.

Free your lymphatic system, eliminate toxics and embrace your beauty in a therapeutic, educational and empowering approach to skin care. Financing is available. Albert Schweitzer said, “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” Most of our readers will recognize the faces on this issue’s cover. They are philanthropic leaders in our community and innovators in their respective industries. They are independent business owners who shop local and live right here in the Valley. They ski the same slopes, sip the same vintages and uniformly advocate for this beautiful place we call home. One commonality they all share is that they love their lives. They love living here in Kelowna. They love networking with fellow entrepreneurs. They love creating

and setting goals. But perhaps equally important is that they have found happiness. Their passion for what they do on a daily basis is apparent in every aspect of their lives and brands. 2016 will bring many changes around the globe, perhaps in world governments, global climate and on Wall Street. But more interesting might be what is happening back here at home. According to Statistics Canada, the metropolis of Kelowna had the highest population growth in the country, at 31 per one thousand from 2014 to 2015. Read their stories, support their businesses and be inspired by their happiness for strength comes in knowing what you were meant to do.

Giving Back

BY BRANDI PARNELL PHOTOS BY COREY DUNBAR & MATT PASUTTO

orn and raised right here in the Valley, Matt and Michelle August come from a family of history and heart, legacy and action. Siblings, they are not only entrepreneurial but also philanthropic.

B

Sitting on Matt’s deck one evening, overlooking the lake, they reflected on the immeasurable compassion their uncle Gary received when he was in the last stages of his life. February 2015 claimed the life of their beloved, multifaceted and often ahead of the crowd, uncle. Ironically Matt’s home was the last property Gary August had sold. Not only had he worked in real estate right up until he lost his battle with cancer, Gary was a true advocate for the city he called home. A founding partner of Horizon Realty, the first Coldwell Banker office in Western Canada, Gary loved skiing, golfing, boating, and most of all Kelowna; he especially loved pointing out historical nuances and sharing his appreciation of the city with his clients, new or native, to the region. Matt and Michelle, along with the rest of the August family, walked away from a heartbreaking loss with a deep appreciation for the genuine empathy their family received. Matt and Michelle’s grandfather opened Kelowna Motors in 1945. It has been a family business ever since. And so with deep roots and open hearts they held their first fundraiser last summer, no coincidence, at Matt’s home.

By giving back, their lives have changed. This year The August Family Foundation is hosting a dream car rally for disadvantaged kids. “Our uncle was always incredibly generous. Listening to the stories told by his friends, it was obvious how much he touched the lives of others,” said Michelle.

Working with the Hospice Association, the Okanagan Dream Rally plans to indulge children in perhaps a ride of a lifetime. Think luxury cars, celebrities, big personalities, winding roads and pit stops fit for kings. It will be a day of fresh air and memories made, a day to forget any woes and just enjoy the open road. All of the money raised from the day, including the sponsorship of a car, will go to a great cause. Uncle Gary would be proud.

The event takes place on August 7th. To donate or register, please visit okanagandreamrally.com.

Always a dream to move to the land of great weather and even greater opportunities, it didn’t take him long to realize the potential to accelerate in the real estate market, where he began to buy, renovate and sell homes. “My father was a chief building inspector. Endless hours spent on jobs sites and in front of house plans, I always had a love for the construction and design industry, I began to flip houses in my spare time,” says Wade. His meticulous attention to detail brought him more projects than a fulltime teacher could manage. Eventually he left the classroom and started Wolverine Industries.

Locally owned and operated, Wade and his team have the ability to be flexible and pioneering. We often utilize the ‘Design Build’ method. We like to go into a space and plan alongside the client. We want to understand their vision as though it were our own. Collaboratively we bring that dream to life with suggestions, sample products, and recommendations on the best ways to approach each design.” From the initial consultation to drafting of plans and liaising with engineers, from staging a home or hanging art, Wade and his team take care of every step. With well thought-out plans, excellent communication, and teams scheduled around the clock, Wolverine has executed incredible commercial leasehold improvements and renovations. These projects have ranged from three days, 6,000 sq. ft. office renovations, to entire home transformations in as little as seven to 10 days, which are ideal for real estate investors, business owners or anyone who doesn’t want to deal with the stress or long-term commitment of a renovation. Thomas Jefferson said, “Beer, if drunk in moderation, softens the temper, cheers the spirit and promotes health.” Jefferson would be astounded with the choice of brands, breweries and styles of beer today. In fact, one could truly soften his temper by taking a beer flight and sampling several options from ales to lagers, ambers to darks. Beer is a perfect accompaniment to a warm, sunny day in the Valley. While it could be argued beer is far less sophisticated than its grapey counterpart, it’s gaining traction in the craft market, opening the bottleneck for beer lovers. Here is an introductory look at the drink we affectionately turn to when helping a friend build a deck, at the end of a long workweek, and of course when the lake calls. Warning: Editor recommends enjoying a cold one along with the read. While beers can be complex in flavour, a general rule when it comes to mouthfeel and body is to liken lagers to white wine and ales as the red wine equivalent. Beer can also be paired with food and its best to begin a meal with a lighter beer. Heavier beers can be paired with sweeter bites or after a meal. Beer glasses can enhance your experience and the tasty beverage is best served at 6 degrees Celsius up here in Canada. If you’re interested in learning more about local breweries and best-inclass beers, you might want to check out the Beer at the Lake festival this summer, right here on the beaches of Okanagan Lake. Remember to practice moderation and cheers the spirit!

“If you really want to make a friend, go to someone’s house and eat with him...the people who give you their food give you their heart.”

rowing up in his grandmother’s kitchen, Scott Nystrom developed a deep love of food, one tradition at a time. Food was medicine. It was nourishment. It was how families came together. Food was the connection between fuel for our bodies and salve for our souls.

CESAR CHAVEZ

“I’ve always been into food. I’ve spent my life in kitchens. As a child, I was taught a respect for food and a desire to connect with your ingredients – that’s how I was raised and how my wife and I are raising our children,” he says.

G

And so as the Nourished chef, Nystrom approaches food with deep respect and a belief that delicious food can be prepared with healthy outcomes in mind. Although this mentality is not as present in our world as he’d like, Nystrom is committed to bring nostalgic moments to life one bite at a time.

Somewhere between the 50’s and the 80’s, people forgot how to cook their own food; many people stopped preserving and fermenting foods. Life sped up and as such our globalized food systems adapted to meet the demands of a fast-tracked society.

48

MINT Kelowna

A sociology major at UBCO, for more than a decade, Nystrom cooked in progressively healthier and more advanced kitchens until eventually he landed the role of executive chef. It was during that time though that his health declined and the gruelling hours and demands of his time took its toll. As fate would have it, he tuned into his awareness and took a step back, accepting a position as a paleo chef at a youth wellness center. That time period changed his life and nourished his relationship with food. As Nystrom was improving the lives of children, he began to rebuild his own health. “The changes I began to witness on a daily basis inspired my creativity. It was empowering to reconnect with my roots. I began to heal my body and embark on a food evolution. “ Today he operates Nourished Edible Wellness, a culinary venture that caters to special diets and small-scale dinners. He sings in the kitchen, plays over 40 instruments, crafts recipes for people with food aversions, digs in the dirt and changes lives. “In order to satisfy my need for high quality ingredients, I have built relationships with local farms and food purveyors, like Wise Earth Farm and Fisherman’s Market. In doing so, I know exactly what I am preparing for others, including my own family,” he smiles. Nystrom is aware of not only where his food comes from and how it was grown, but also how it affects the body and how it makes people feel when they eat it.

He is a registered holistic nutritionist. He teaches, consults and hosts dinner parties for the masses. “Now food is my life. From my garden to my guts, I’m cultivating nourished edible wellness as I share food medicine with my clients. My beautiful wife and two incredible kids inspire me to celebrate real food daily. Our children are the farmers and chefs of tomorrow. We have a responsibility to inspire them to take ownership of their food.” Eating meals grown and prepared with love not only enhances mental clarity and digestive comfort, but also provides consistent energy, peak performance and longevity – not to mention encourages ideal weight levels; all the perks of a nourished life, not to mention how incredible it tastes. “I am a big believer in being present with food. I believe in togetherness and celebration. I want meals to evoke an emotional response and foster great memories. Food is an art and a thread that ties us all together.” As a father, gardener, musician and chef, his roles tend to run over into one another. His passion is contagious, his presence enlightening. He prepares food with his heart. “I love to help people connect with food.” Whether you’re looking for menu planning, to upgrade your current food lifestyle; if you are hosting an event lakeside or tying the knot, rest assured you’re in good hands. Let Nystrom host your next dinner party where the menu will not only provide sustenance, it will tantalize your palate and nurture your soul. Mini Cashew Freezecakes Adapted from a recipe from Minimalist Baker Time: 1 hour to soak nuts, 20 minutes prep, 4 hours freezing Health conscious, Gluten-free, Vegan, Paleo, Raw Serves: 12

Made with silky smooth cashews, coconut oil, and succulent Medjool dates, this simple and scrumptious dessert is jam packed with whole foods and guilt-free healthy fats to nourish your body and please your taste buds. INGREDIENTS CRUST • 1 cup soft Medjool dates, pitted, approximately 12 • 1 cup pecans, walnuts, almonds or macadamia nuts • ¼ tsp sea salt FILLING • 1 1/2 cups raw cashews, (soaked in hot water for 1 hour) • 1/2 cup premium full-fat canned coconut milk • 1/2 cup high-quality blue agave nectar • 1/3 cup coconut oil, melted • 1/4 cup lemon juice (2 lemons) • 1 tsp real vanilla extract FLAVOR OPTIONS Dark Chocolate Crunch - Add 3 Tbsp of raw cacao powder when blending the filling. Garnish freezecakes with a sprinkle of raw cacao nibs before they go into the freezer. Salted Date Caramel – Soak 10 dates in hot water for 20 minutes, drain, then blend dates smooth with ½ tsp vanilla extract in food processor, slowly adding just enough soaking water back in to blend into a very thick sauce. Drizzle over set freezecakes and sprinkle with Maldon flaked sea salt.

Coconut Whipped Cream - Scoop ½ cup coconut “cream” from the top layer of a can of premium full-fat coconut milk. Add ¼ tsp vanilla and agave and whisk vigorously to fluff up. Chill in fridge 30 mins to thicken up. Dollop onto set freezecakes to serve. DIRECTIONS Soak cashews by pouring boiling water over them. Leave them uncovered for 1 hour to soften (the key to a silky smooth texture). In a food processor, whiz pitted dates into tiny bits, but not a puree. Scoop out and set aside. Add nuts to the processor and blitz into a coarse meal, and then add dates back in with the salt and blend until everything sticks together. Press crust evenly into greased or lined muffin tins. Parchment paper will make removal easier once frozen. Let the pressed crust chill out in the freezer while preparing the filling. Drain cashews and add to high-powered blender with all remaining filling ingredients. Puree on high speed until silky smooth. If necessary, add a bit more coconut milk to help blending. Taste and tweak sweetness or tartness as necessary (more lemon or agave). Divide filling evenly into crusted muffin tins. Give your pan a sharp bang on the counter to knock out any air bubbles and help the filling set evenly. Cover with plastic wrap and chill in freezer until completely frozen solid for 4 hours or overnight. To remove from muffin tin, let sit out of freezer for 5 minutes. Pull on tabs of paper or run a warm knife around the edge. Store in a sealed container between layers of parchment paper or plastic wrap in the freezer until you are ready to devour. Serve slightly chilled, as freezecakes will get soft and become slouchy at room temperature.

Leave lamb in the fridge until the seasoning mix is complete to preserve proper meat to fat ratio. Combine all ingredients except lamb and breadcrumbs in food processor and blend until onion is the size of a fine mince.

While you may know Bacaro for its thoughtful, unique but simplistic in design taste offerings, you may not be familiar with the man behind the menu.

In a large bowl or deep pan, add lamb and cover with mix. Using gloves, knead meatball mix with hands adding breadcrumbs in three stages until everything is well mixed. Proceed to mold into 1 oz. balls (or desired weight).

Wilkins believes it is important to not over complicate the palate, but rather with solid technique, good seasoning and balanced flavours, deliver a quality meal. “All of our smaller plates are meant to be explosive in flavor; when you serve someone a small amount of something you have fewer bites to leave a good impression.”

To cook heat a sauté pan with 2 Tsps. cooking oil over medium heat for approximately 12 seconds before adding balls. Add balls and sear on all sides. Once seared turn heat down and continue to cook on low until meatballs are prepared to desired temperature, approximately 6-7 minutes until well done.

CHILI-MINT PISTOU

(PESTO WITHOUT NUTS)

INGREDIENTS 4 oz. mint 1 garlic glove 3/4 cup olive oil 1/2 tsp cumin 1/4 tsp coriander

1/4 tsp paprika 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper 1 oz. white balsamic vinegar (or plain white) 1 tsp honey Salt to taste

Born in Toronto, Wilkins has lived all over, from Ottawa to New Jersey, Pennsylvania to Vancouver, and now of course, Kelowna. He spent four years at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, where he received a Bachelors Degree in Hospitality Management and studied wine. Don’t let his credentials intimidate you though; he is a homegrown Canadian boy at heart who has a weakness for a nights spent eating chicken wings, enjoying a cold beer and watching a game of hockey. Aside from gourmet food and wine pairings, Wilkins has a real passion for music. Word has it that if he’s in your kitchen, he’s singing.

DIRECTIONS In a blender combine all ingredients reserving half the olive oil. Begin blending and slowly add the remaining olive oil. Blend until smooth. Serve with meatballs.

Vernal Equinox BY BRANDI PARNELL

March 20th, 2016 brings the world a new season. It is a time when the sun is directly above the earth’s equator. Equinox literally means ‘equal night,” since the duration of the day and night is nearly equal in all parts of the world. Here in the Valley, spring break for our school aged children hovers and we happily experience earlier dawns and later sunsets.

The clouds have lifted and our ski season is heading down the slopes. Plants are sprouting, clouds are lifting and Kelownians are enjoying the warmer days of spring. If you’re anything like us at Mint, we are planning our tomorrows while relishing our todays. Spring is the perfect time to explore your life and the Okanagan. It is a prime opportunity to take stock of what needs nurturing, what needs a new start. In fact, the word vernal means fresh, new or youthful. Here are our top five ways to infuse fresh and youthful living in your spring.

ONE Mind – Unclutter your mind. Take inventory of projects that have been weighing you down and re-evaluate their progress. If they are meaningful to you, make a commitment to cross them off your list. In other words, clean out your closets, repaint a room or organize your cupboards. Add some colour to your life, even if it is simply a new set of throw cushions. Do what you have been putting off.

TWO Body – Spring is a great time to implement a new habit. Try a juice cleanse, attend a new fitness class or commit to getting a solid seven to eight hours of sleep per night. Feeling rested will infuse youthfulness into your days.

Body – Immerse yourself in nature. Maybe people travel to the Valley to take advantage of our lifestyle. Walk down Bernard Avenue and notice new shops or restaurants you love. Grab a coffee and inhale the energy of our town. Take a road trip, drink more water.

Soul – Lastly, explore where your life could use a little more compassion and top it up. Start a gratitude practice, commit to complementing others or schedule yourself for a massage. Life can be overwhelming, be good to you.

FOUR

Sure you can wash your windows and change your furnace filter too (you’re welcome) but just remember to also infuse new life into yours.

Body – Reset your vibration. Being in nature may be the best possible way to recharge. Grab your dog, your spouse or a pal and go for a hike. With scenic trails at arms length, you have no excuse. Besides, it’s good for your health. A 160 lb. person can burn upwards of 450 calories per hour hiking.

Leo Tolstoy said, “Spring is the time of plans and projects.” Take time to explore your inner world this spring as you relish in nature’s beauty, new vintages and nothing but fresh starts.

NEUTRALS BY JILLIAN HARRIS

This year I’m all about making life EASIER. I am ridding the nick nacks and smaller pieces in my home and am investing in big simple statement pieces that are functional. I’m sure you thought you would never hear me say this but…out with bright whites and in with muted natural whites!!! I am totally loving this transition. Don’t get me wrong, I still love white and think it should be incorporated in some way…but I am taking a slight step back!!! I’m loving decorating with natural creams, creamy greys, soft whites, and muted neutrals. Bleached wood mixed with brass, gold and metals have a special spot on my canvas this year. One of my favourite decorating tips that I always go back to is using different textures. This is a great and easy way to add warmth and depth in a room…try linens, canvas, leathers and fauxfurs. Mix it all together and there you have a perfect combination! The following pages have some great ideas on where and how to start…

A McKinley Beach SELECT BUILDER

n award-winning builder, Rykon Construction has been planning, developing and building custom homes, and properties of distinction, in British Columbia since 1984. In fact, president, Randy Siemens, is intimately familiar with every aspect of building your custom home. He began his career in new home construction as a framing sub-contractor in the Lower Mainland and moved to the Okanagan in 1996.

With more than three decades of experience, Randy’s management and leadership combined with his technical and personal skills enable him to build relationships at all levels — from sub trades and colleagues to working partners and ultimately satisfied clients.

“We don’t see ourselves as just another Kelowna home builder,” he says. Rykon strives to help clients achieve their vision for custombuilt homes. They focus impeccable attention on the details and have built their foundation on clear, direct communication, which is the basis for everything they do. “Our construction managers come with a vast variety of knowledge. Our senior team members are mentors to the people in the trenches everyday. From the top down, everyone is invested in the process.” And so from the smallest of details, Siemens and every member of his team does their very best on all jobs, large or small, not simply because it fuels what they do as a company but because they honour the investment both financially and emotionally in building or purchasing a home. “From a custom building perspective, Rykon is all about people. That’s the truth. The process by which we are able to transform your custom home happens one ‘Home Step’ at a time. That process, from start to finish, needs to be conveyed to everyone involved,” says Siemens. Home Steps is the process by which Rykon seamlessly and transparently allows the client to not only be in the know but also be in control of all decisions, from budget to finish and timeline. “Our system defines the building process in such a way that it’s not overwhelming. We break down every stage and decision into bitesized chunks and involve our customers every step of the way. That openness, delivered by the best people in our industry, is the back bone of what we do.”

The relationship Rykon develops with each client and each person in their system, right down to the project coordinators and front line sales staff, is paramount to their success. Time tested integrity and a commitment to the highest standards has afforded Rykon the opportunity to associate with some of the most desirable communities the area has to offer, McKinley Beach is no exception. MCKINLEY BEACH - A PHENOMENAL LOCATION! “This community is designed for forward thinking people who choose lifestyle. McKinley will be a benchmark in the Valley moving forward. There is great strength in execution. They’ve done exactly what they’ve said they were going to – right from the start,” says Siemens. McKinley Beach is the perfect pairing for Rykon because of its cutting-edge vision and first class amenities, including a sandy beach and marina. The location is exceptional – the actual setting, the architecture, and the west coast contemporary natural materials are refreshing. “This community is nothing short of outstanding.” Building a home can be daunting- regardless of square footage, location, or budget. Rest easy knowing you’re in

the best possible care. Rykon aims to alleviate fear with wide-open communication and an end goal to always over-deliver. That is the basis by which they strive to move forward every day. “We continually try to do it better. We not only communicate very closely with our clients, we are engaged constantly as a team so that we may be reflective of every aspect of our role. This guarantees our homeowners are as comfortable as possible in every way.” “Ultimately, we build every home as if it were our own – one we would want to live in and raise our own families.” Passionate, articulate and knowledgeable is just who Randy Siemens is and the way Rykon conducts business on a daily basis. “Kelowna is an amazing place to live. There is a significant attraction to lifestyle, weather, recreation and community here, including on trend, approachable architecture. At Rykon, we want to be a part of all of that.”  Rykon Construction 202-1561 Sutherland Ave, Kelowna 250.712.9664 | rykon.ca

LIVING LARGE IN A SMALLER SPACE BY LORRAINE MILLER PHOTOS ALEX DUFFIELD OF VIEWS4BUSINESS.COM

At some point in our busy lives we discover the Canadian dream of a roomy house on a spacious lot is simply too much work! Either the brood of children has moved out and the house is quiet (and dusty) or we realize our most precious commodity, time, is consumed with cleaning, reorganizing, gardening, shoveling, maintaining and then it’s time to start cleaning again. If it’s just not sustainable or sensible, it’s time to downsize.

uxury condominium ownership in Kelowna is taking off. Royal LePage specialist Joy Zsombor recognized this trend some time ago when the downtown cultural district of Kelowna began to develop. “There’s a reorganization going on in Kelowna. People want better balance in their lives and don’t want to be tied to work and the responsibility of their large family homes. Downtown, active, pedestrian lifestyles are drawing people out of the suburbs and into the action of Kelowna. People are trading in their SUV’s for walking shoes and bicycles. It’s a healthier, more sustainable way of living,” explains Joy.

L

However, making the leap and editing your belongings is not easy. But it is doable. Here are Joy’s top tips for making it manageable: Start thinking about pairing down, early. Take a critical look at your belongings and decide which items you really love and value. Keep on average one third of your possessions. The remainder are just ‘things.’ Heavily edit from the areas in your home not attached to your heart. For example, the kitchen, laundry room, basement and garage.

70

MINT Kelowna

Use the floor plans of your new condominium to assess your furniture requirements knowing not everything will make the cut. Talk to your realtor about larger items that should stay put. Joy can help you decide what to include in the sale. Ride-on mowers and snow blowers are such items that will be useful left with the house. Lastly, use online classified sites to help sell larger items you won’t be taking with you. You’ll be surprised at what clever resourceful people are doing with used items. Donate smaller items to second hand stores or shelters. Be as eco-friendly as possible. The garbage should be your last resort. PLENTY OF CHOICE IN LUXURY CONDOMINIUMS IN DOWNTOWN KELOWNA. “Condominium living is a far cry from apartment living,” explains Joy. “When you choose to make a condo your home you customize it and take it from something basic to something beautiful. You might upgrade the flooring or add smart technology. Your new home can be as comfortable and luxurious as you like. Plus you can turn the key and walk out the door for a vacation without a single thought of who will care for the garden, bring in the mail or set the lights on timers for security. Think Vancouver, or New York!” Joy works closely with reputable vacation rental manager Lilian Lohre of H & L Condo Services. Lillian is a talented decorator and contractor. Lillian can turn your luxury condo into an investment property with incredible rental potential. www. kelownavacationseasonalrentals.com For more information, contact Joy Zsombor with Royal LePage.

might have received more accolades but Cheryl Strayed is the woman behind the memoir turned major motion picture, Wild. It is a tale that feels much like going home; both because its beautiful but also because it is riddled with humanity. pass time and lost herself to drugs and promiscuity. That is until she returned to the hardware store and bought the book. Once she had finally earned enough money to purchase the necessary supplies, she looked caution in the face and embarked on a journey she must have known would either kill her or change the course of her life. Alfred Lord Tennyson said, “The shell must break before the bird can fly.” Carrying a far too heavy backpack, which Strayed named ‘The Monster’, she went farther into her own personal darkness. She fought mental and physical pain; she hallucinated, talked to her mother’s spirit and felt afraid, time and again. She prayed, gave in and started all over.

I

n the winter of 1994, in a Minneapolis hardware store, Cheryl Strayed picked up a book entitled The Pacific Crest Trail, Volume 1: California. Instead of leering at alleged Hollywood gossip typically found on magazine covers in checkout lines, Strayed walked away with a small bit of knowledge that would someday serve her well. The PCT, a roughly 2,000-mile path that runs from the Mexican border in California to a bridge spanning the Columbia River into Canada, would one day save her life. She put the book back, paid for the shovel she had come for and left. In the years that followed that serendipitous moment, Strayed’s life came unravelled. She had lost her beloved mother to cancer, dropped out of college just shy of a degree and got divorced. She waitressed to

Once I had finished reading the book, I called my mother. Wild is a story of adversity and the ease at which one could succumb to demons. It is a story filled with self-doubt and of course, the trials of being human. It is the examination into vices for temporary pain relief and the associated long-term damage. But mostly it is a tale of honest and personal triumph. I found Strayed to be easily relatable; as though you could imagine being out in the wilderness alone and afraid, trying to quiet one’s mind enough to find an answer. Perhaps you’re familiar with her straightforward, common-sense approach to life. Strayed has other touch points with her fans including her podcast, Dear Sugar, which she does alongside fellow author, Steve Almond. The opportunities to see into Strayed dismantled life and champion her to put it all back together was not only heart-warming but also touching. If you are up for a course in empathy, this book is for you.

YOUR ANSWERS TO FIVE KEY BUYING AND SELLING WITH JOY FINANCIAL PLANNING QUESTIONS BY LORRAINE MILLER PHOTOS AVIVA STUDIOS BY MELANIE FURLONG

Choosing the right financial planner is the first step in planning for a sound financial future. But what are the second and third steps in that process?

DONNA STOLTZ WITH SANDRA CRAMEN

78

MINT Kelowna

Because the world of finance and investments can be a daunting and intimidating place, we’ve asked Sandra Cramen, BA, CFP an investment advisor with RBC Dominion Securities for guidance. Capitalizing on her 20 plus years experience, here are her answers to five key questions to help you choose the right advisor.

WITH SO MANY PEOPLE CLAIMING TO KNOW WHAT’S BEST FOR ME AND MY FUTURE, HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT FINANCIAL PLANNER? Above all choose someone you trust. Arrange to meet and spend time getting to know who is sitting across the desk from you. Can you see yourself building a professional, honest relationship with this person? Does this planner have the experience and industry qualifications you want and need? WHAT CAN I EXPECT AT OUR FIRST MEETING? The first meeting should be all about you, not product, including some frank discussion about your current financial situation and cash flow. Share what is important to you – planning for your child’s education, semi-retire, reducing debt or building a legacy. Set your goals. WHAT ARE THE COMPONENTS OF A COMPLETE FINANCIAL PLAN? Every client’s financial plan is unique and personalized. My aim is to help clients integrate relevant aspects of their life into a road map, detailing the various routes that can be taken to achieve their desired life goals. This road map could include budgeting, investing, taxation, retirement, estate planning, making major purchases as well as debt and/or risk management. We also manage clients’ investment portfolios and work towards a comfortable retirement income stream. HOW WILL I KNOW IF THE PLAN IS WORKING FOR ME? Updating your net worth is a gauge of the viability of your financial plan. It’s the year over year measurement of growing your assets to fund future goals. Net worth is simply what you own less what you owe. Your net worth increases by paying down debt, saving income and growing your asset base. Annual reviews with your planner will keep you informed on the success of your plan. Goals change over time so they should be revisited and updated often. WITH SO MANY CAREER OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO YOU AS A FINANCIAL PLANNER AND INVESTMENT ADVISOR, WHY DID YOU CHOOSE RBC?

Sandra Cramen, BA, CFP RBC Dominion Securities sandra.cramen@rbc.com 250.712.2162 This article is supplied by Sandra Cramen, an Investment Advisor with RBC Dominion Securities Inc. Member-Canadian Investor Protection Fund. This article is for information purposes only. Please consult with a professional advisor before taking any action based on information in this article.

I chose a firm that allows me to focus on my clients and not products I’m expected to recommend. I am passionate about planning and I love what I do. Together I work with families to find balance between their needs and wants today combined with their desired future lifestyle. Having an associate, Donna Stoltz, with more than 30 years in the financial industry, provides me with an additional resource to assist clients. REINVENTING THE LUXURY AUTOMOBILE EXPERIENCE BY BRANDI PARNELL PHOTOS BY SHARLA PIKE

ake everything you know about the generic car buying experience and leave it in the dust. Instead, go back in time to when you were a young boy with a poster hung on your wall of your dream car. Luxury car buying is more than a set of swanky wheels; it is a longing from childhood, a feeling you’ve dreamt of for decades, an extension of you and a knowing that anything is attainable.

T

Matt August of the esteemed August family of car dealers, August Luxury Motors, is changing everything you know or think you may know about buying an indulgent car whether your luxury car budget be $25k or $550k. As the only luxury certified pre-owned and exotic car lounge between the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky Mountains, they’ll have your heart revving for a ride of a lifetime.

“This is a game changer,” says Matt. “We are taking what we know about customer service and turning the car buying experience into something that has never been done before.” Open for business as of September 2015, Matt and his team of tech savvy sales people have removed the ostentatious veil of shopping for the most elite machines on the road. In its place they’ve created a showroom void of sales desks and high-pressured tactics, instead furnished with openness, a drink menu complete with an espresso machine, iPads, flat screen TV’s and sofas. “As a kid you imagine the thrill of driving your dream car. You hear its engine purring, feel your foot on the gas pedal and imagine the sensation of wind on your

face. We welcome anyone who in interested to come in and check out anything from a BMW to a Lamborghini and everything in between,” he says. Ironically these stunning machines are more than eyecatching, they make living in the Okanagan a pure pleasure. Suddenly exploring the region from the lake to the mountains, from the vineyards to the orchards, and everything in-between is a slow and steady acceleration. It’s noteworthy August Luxury Motorcars is not tied to any one brand, as they offer unbiased, educated service based on all luxury brand specific nuances. You don’t need to be on a waiting list to buy a vehicle you’ve longed for and no matter your budget or dream, you’ll receive the exact same experience. “We’re industry leading with technology. Every vehicle receives a full production video, which gives customers a chance to see a car in its entirety – inside and out – from across North America. They happily deal with out-of-town buyers and will ship vehicles almost anywhere. Listed in the duPont Registry, Matt, his sales manager, Mike Hall and their team are clearly headed in the right direction.
