y family and I spent the winter enjoying the slopes and especially the après ski. Time passes quickly here with the most incredible seasons. The people are warm and the options for how to spend a Saturday are endless. As we say goodbye to spring and welcome summer, I am equally excited to be on the water with my girls. The extraordinary long, sunny days, the blooming of the cherry trees, the sound of the boats and the thought of an extended summer all make my heart happy. Loving where you live resonates with me on a daily basis. As this issue was going to press, I was informed that Mint was nominated for New Startup, Best of Kelowna 2016. This wouldn’t have been possible without you. I truly love this place, the weather, the people, the scenery and my life. So put on your sandals, sit on the deck, pour yourself a Cucumber Collins and enjoy this issue, it’s a little slice of happy wrapped up in mint. xo

“We believe in who we are, in what we do and where we are going.” MICHELLE WELCH
n 2011, yogi Michelle Welch opened a retail store with aspirations to change flexible fashion but not necessarily the world. “raw” is a boutique in downtown Kelowna, which specializes in yoga, dance, gym, flow, swimming and surfing apparel, as well as workout wear from exclusively North American brands.
I
Her intent was to open a seemingly public closet, perfectly organized with clothing that looked and felt great on. She needed to align with compatible, passionate people who shared her vision. Offering stylish, athletic clothing you can wear to work, the studio, the gym and out on the streets, “raw” affords you the opportunity to express your style in clothes that actually work for you. “raw” is a shop with heart and soul. It is a place where employees connect with not only the brands but also the thoughtfulness of purchase. In fact, many of Welch’s staff have been employed for years which can be unusual in the retail business. “I want people to be comfortable when they come into my store and I want them to keep coming back for the great help they receive,” she says. Welch’s buying compassion led her through many different athleisure lines but for some reason, she could only align herself with ones made ethically. “All the brands in our store, except Swell, are manufactured in North America. I will not bring in any clothing brands that are not. And although that has been challenging at times, I’m proud that our customers can feel good about choosing to support North America, fair trade and ethical manufacturing.”

In today’s world, we are inspired to make choices for tomorrow. Not only are we urged to think about what we put into our bodies, but also our carbon footprints. Choosing ethically manufactured clothing not only feels good, it has positive trickling effects on our economy and the earth. Sadly, today’s fast-fashion is rapidly depleting the world’s natural resources; change is imminent and thanks to boutiques like “raw”, consumers have more choices. “Hardtail is one of our main brands but we also carry Body Language, Electric and Rose, Teeki, Wear Moi for dancers, Tonic and Spiritual Gangster. Our clothes are top quality, made to last in soft, comfortable fabrics.” Shopping at “raw” is a fun experience with upbeat music and a chill atmosphere. Best of all, it is a destination with customer service second to none. “When I opened my store, I didn’t know a lot about how the clothing industry’s impact on the world. I just chose lines that were
functional and that I loved.” Five years later, Welch is giving Kelownians the opportunity to not only look swish and shop local but a place to come and be waited on. You’ll find the best fit, appreciate the energetic flow of friendly staff and feel good about your purchase. raw athletics 263 Bernard Ave, Kelowna 778.484.5469 | Raw69-athletics rawathletics @rawathletics1

Changing the Way the World Sees Vancouver A Review of Vancouver Fashion Week BY BRANDI PARNELL
Vancouver Fashion Week (VFW) is over but in its wake is a trail of delicious winter 2016 trends heading our way. The growing 7-day extravaganza of more than 100 Canadian and international designers wrapped up in March leaving the city of Vancouver wanting more.
This upcoming season’s collections showcased amazing and sophisticated talent walking down the catwalk this season. But even more exciting are the Canadian creations. Trends on the horizon include fluid-motion-like garments with bohemian and Parisian influences as well as a mixing of colours and patterns. Here are some of the highlights from our very own BC designers on the global fashion landscape.

“Don’t be yourself, be someone else.” 44511234 is one man’s pursuit of an all white collection barred sans bridal. Models trickled down the runway barefoot to the natural sounds of falling rain. Texture stood at the forefront as textiles were layered in unexpected lengths and shapes to create voluminous silhouettes.
DAY 5 - ELEPHANTASIA PHOTOS BERNARDO MOURA (VFW)
Their mission is to help the longterm survival of the African elephant by means of education, conservation and action. Elephantasia is a traveling exhibit of elephant inspired eco-couture raising awareness and funds to expose and protect the African elephant alongside NOVICA of National Geographic and Elephantatics BC. Designers carefully crafted one look each influenced by the massive stature and intelligence of the African elephant. Tribal music filled the room as traditional drummers played live beats. Sporting white face paint, models walked the runway in a range of grey, black and bone designs.

DAY 6 – ALEX S. YU PHOTO BERNARDO MOURA (VFW)
THE COLOURFUL MINIMALIST Vancouver based designer Alex S.Yu’s collection reflects the contrasting emotions of contemporary luxury women’s street wear. The collection plays with numerous menswear references and visually restricting tailoring elements such as a high and tight turtleneck or skintight sleeves. Stark visual contrasts such as exaggerated looseness begs the question, ‘Are we really as free as we think we are?’

There is an Irish proverb that states, “A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor’s book.”
With self-made PHDs in loving life, we’re here to help you improve your life by adding more zen to your bedroom. Green thumb or not, perhaps it’s time to invest in a new plant. After all, leafy greens are no slouch to awesome; they also oxygenate your home, filter the air you breathe and can help you sleep more soundly. Adding a touch of greenery to your coveted space is not only appealing to the eyes, these living organisms interact with your body, mind and home to improve the quality of your life. So follow doctor’s orders, laugh until your belly hurts and get your zzz’s. Here are four houseplants to enhance your bedroom and your rest.
LAVENDER Lavender is one essential oil everyone should keep on hand. It can aide in easing allergy symptoms, is known for its relaxing effects on the body and can help with many minor skin irritations. When it comes to rest, its scent can release soothing, sedating effects.
ALOE The soothing gel from the inside of an aloe vera plant can increase healing, act as a natural after shave and help detoxify the air in any room of your home. Sleeping in a room free from dust and air pollutants brings you one step closer to an uninterrupted slumber.
JASMINE These flowery vines exude a beautiful aroma in any room. Jasmine has long been an ingredient found in many beauty products. Used in lotion, it can soothe dryness and ease irritating, itchy skin. But there’s more, its fragrant aroma can be beneficial for anyone whose mind tends to run over. Leave the wandering to Jasmine’s vines and put your brain to bed.
SNAKE PLANT Pay no attention to its name. The plant is easy to care for, readily accessible and inexpensive. While its healing properties may not be as vast as the aforementioned, what’s great about this plant is that it emits oxygen at night while consuming carbon dioxide – something we do naturally while breathing – while we sleep. And as you know by now, better air quality leads to a better night’s sleep. You don’t need to be a fēng shuǐ master to enhance your sleep. Tonight before crawling into bed, take inventory of ways you can improve your sleep space and get more rest. Sweet dreams. MINT Kelowna

AN INVISIBLE APPROACH to a beautiful smile BY BRANDI PARNELL
PHOTOS BY SHARLA PIKE
atients from early teens all the way through adulthood are transforming their smiles with Invisalign, an impressive orthodontic treatment option barely visible to others. Available worldwide, Invisalign is also called Clear Aligner Therapy, and is available right here in Kelowna. In fact, Dr. Trevor Morhaliek of Simply Amazing Smiles was the first general dentist in the Okanagan to embrace this technology and has been improving smiles with Invisalign for more than a decade.
P
“Patients love Invisalign. It’s extremely popular and most of my team have had Invisalign themselves, including me,” says Morhaliek. “It’s such an easy choice for anyone wanting a healthier and better looking smile. Plus, without any metal brackets or wires to show, patients feel more comfortable with their appearance as they go through treatment.” Simply Amazing Smiles offers a refreshingly modern approach to dental care, from general dentistry and Invisalign orthodontics, to total smile rehabilitation. Their dental office, located on Ellis Street, hosts a relaxing, calming atmosphere. From the soothing hot aromatherapy towels, which follow each visit to their private treatment suites and even complimentary massages, they have thought of everything. They focus not only on providing the finest clinical care, but also on creating the best possible patient experiences. They refer to this approach as their “Culture of Care” where their hospitable, smiling team strives to do whatever they can to make your next dental visit more enjoyable. “Even after all these years, it’s still amazing to witness these beautiful smile transformations happening every day,” he says. “Patients choose Invisalign because it easily adapts to their lifestyle. We choose to offer it because we know it works and fits perfectly into our treatment sphere.” One of the greatest benefits of Invisalign is how minimally it impacts day-to-day routine. Not only incredibly comfortable, Invisalign comes with a host of unique benefits over traditional braces.

REASONS TO CONSIDER INVISALIGN Effectively treats a wide variety of cases, including crowding, spacing, crossbite, overbite and underbite.
No one knows you’re in treatment.
Aligners are easily removed allowing you to enjoy all your favorite foods.
Aligners are made of a smooth, comfortable plastic eliminating discomfort to the cheeks or your gums.
Allows you to brush and floss your teeth normally for better periodontal health.
Fits easily into any schedule with short office visits only every 6-8 weeks.

SO HOW DOES IT WORK? Advanced computer software is used to help predict and guide the tooth movements as directed by Dr. Morhaliek. A series of clear aligners are then generated after his approval. By using Invisalign, the precise position of the teeth are monitored at each observation visit using the very same software interface that the patient can clearly see as well. “The technology is really impressive. Together we see the patient’s teeth move in virtual time, this confirms the teeth are tracking as predicted but also keeps the patient motivated. They love seeing how their teeth will look in the future, compared to how they look right now.” Invisalign treatment is customized for each patient. The average treatment time is approximately 12 months but faster results are also achievable with Accelerated Invisalign Treatment. “A typical 9 month treatment can be finished in as little as 18 weeks, which is absolutely incredible. But the surest way to learn exactly how Invisalign will benefit you is to come in for a free consultation,” says Dr. Morhaliek. A consultation will assess treatment and show just how inexpensive Invisalign can be. With flexible payment options including 12-month interest-free financing, Simply Amazing Smiles makes smiling as easy

and affordable as possible. Invisalign is considered a clinical equivalent to traditional braces, which means it is accepted under dental insurance plans as well. Dr. Morhaliek adds while the beauty of having straight teeth is undeniable, so is the long term oral health benefits. “When teeth are properly aligned, it promotes better gum health, but also the bite and the teeth themselves are less susceptible to cavities and abnormal patterns of wear. Invisalign has been and continues to be a true winner for a healthy, great-looking smile.” To learn more, or schedule your complimentary Invisalign consultation, call 250.762.2521. EXPERT ADVICE
Straight Talk About Clear Aligner Therapy in Orthodontics Clear Aligner Therapy first emerged in the late 1990’s as an alternative to metal braces. Align Technology (creator of Invisalign) was first in the industry to develop a clear aligner system that could predictably move teeth orthodontically, just like braces. Initially used to treat simple tooth malpositions, Invisalign now serves as a complete alternative to braces and is routinely used to correct a vast array of malocclusions by dentists and orthodontists worldwide. Over 3.5 million patients have been treated with Invisalign, and the numbers are growing…Here’s why. Invisalign clear aligners take a modern approach to straightening teeth, using a custom-made series of aligners created for each patient. Made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic you simply wear over your teeth. Wearing aligners will gradually and gently shift teeth into place, based on the exact movements prescribed by your dentist or orthodontist. There are no metal brackets and no wires. You simply pop in a new set of aligners approximately every two weeks, until your treatment is complete and you achieve the confident smile that you’ve always wanted.
COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS: My teeth are really crooked. Can Invisalign be used instead of metal braces? Invisalign can be used to treat any orthodontic condition that involves moving teeth. Invisalign is an absolute substitute for metal braces in the hands of a qualified and experienced Invisalign provider. Does it hurt? No. Unlike metal braces that require ‘tightening’ at various stages, Invisalign uses much gentler, steady forces to move teeth, therefore, no discomfort. How much does it cost? Treatment fees vary and are largely determined by the complexity and the time it will take to correct the issue. Many Invisalign providers offer flexible monthly payment options to make treatment as affordable as possible. Healthy smiles are often the most beautiful smiles as well. If you’re considering making a change to a more confident smile, consider clear aligner therapy with Invisalign. You’ll be glad you did! R E L A X . R E P A I R . R E J U V E N AT E Float / Cryotherapy / Massage BY BRANDI PARNELL
A new business has floated into Kelowna with aspirations to improve over all wellness. Brothers, Banee and his brother, Navee Sandhu believe in taking time to relax, repair and rejuvenate one’s body, and mind. Gravity Float & Wellness is the pair’s second business, Beyond Nutrition their first. 28
MINT Kelowna
Gravity has three main offerings, Float Therapy, Whole Body Cryotheraphy and DreamWave massage. All of these treatments are targeted to calm the mind and rehabilitate the body with a host of health benefits. irst developed by Dr. John C. Lilly in the 1950s, Floating is a method of immersing yourself into a sensory deprivation tank, typically for 90 minutes. The tank is filled with more than 1,000 lbs. of Epsom salts creating a weightless environment, which frees the brain from outside stimuli and allows the floater to sink effortlessly into total relaxation.
F
With increased brain research on the benefits of not only relaxation but also meditation, floating deepened awareness and the ability to be completely in the moment. It can be a meditative experience allowing the brain to shift to a lower frequency Theta state that enhances deep relaxation, visualization and creativity. “It’s the only environment in the world where you’re completely weightless, other than a womb. Shutting out the world is complete mind and body wellness,” says Banee. It has been said floating not only decreases cortisol but also can improve symptoms of depression, anxiety and insomnia. According to Time.com, a study done in 2006 in the International Journal of Stress Management found for a group of 70 people with stress-related pain, 12 float sessions reduced pain, stress, anxiety and depression while improving sleep and optimism. An equally impressive treatment, which has become more popular as of late, especially with athletes, is Whole Body Cryotheraphy. In just three minutes, you can improve blood circulation, reduce inflammation and pain, and enhance the body’s overall ability to heal. Originally used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, with temperatures between -200°F to -250°F, benefits of cryotherapy include improved recovery time from injury, improved flexibility, improved skin conditions and even increased weight loss.
increased motor function skills, as well as a reduction in pain. This is just one example of an individual whose quality of life has increased from using Cryotherapy regularly.” Most clients who visit Gravity are well researched, health savvy individuals looking to change or live an even better life. The DreamWave massage system delivers a full-body massage using Inada’s proprietary shiatsu point detection technology, to adapt to individual needs. This session is a powerful, restorative massage often described as relaxing and transcending. “There are many ways to feel great. With our monthly memberships, we hope to see our clients often. For only $49 per month, they can receive any one of our treatments and benefit from a reduced price on additional sessions.” The world seems to be shifting in a way that people are investing more and more often in their total mind, body and spiritual wellness. (Part 2)
In our last issue we discussed the first three pillars of hormonal balance; here are the remaining three areas, which can contribute to better hormonal balance and overall health. 4. BOOST YOUR NUTRIENT LEVELS I commonly see nutrient deficiencies and borderline anemias in a majority of my patients with hormonal imbalance. A few key vitamins and minerals needed for optimal hormonal balance include vitamins A, C, and D, the B family of vitamins, especially B5, B6, folate, as well as methylcobalamin and minerals such as magnesium, zinc, selenium, and iron. There can be many reasons for poor nutrient levels, but the most common ones I see are malabsorption from digestive system imbalances and food sensitivities (especially wheat/gluten and dairy), chronic stress, use of birth control, long term NSAID use (Advil, Tylenol, etc), acid blockers medications, excess caffeine and alcohol consumption and low stomach acid. TIP A very high quality multivitamin-mineral is always a good place to start to ensure you are getting adequate levels. Better still, Vitamin IV Therapy is an amazing way to boost levels of all these vitamins and minerals by saturating your cells in nutrients.
5. DEAL WITH YOUR STRESS Chronic stressors come from a range of unhealthy lifestyle habits including poor diet and food sensitivities, too much or too little exercise, poor sleep, environmental toxins and heavy metals, chronic low-grade infections, the need for rest and relaxation and internalizing emotional stress. Under chronic stress, the adrenal glands increase their output of cortisol, our stress hormone. This increase in cortisol requires the production of large levels of pregnenolone, our master hormone, in order to keep up. Chronic stressors and cortisol steal away pregnelonone from areas needed to produce our sex hormones including estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Overtime, not only do our sex hormones become depleted and imbalanced, but so does the body’s cortisol levels, resulting in fatigue, aches, pains, stubborn weight
gain, anxiety, depression, low sex drive and weak immunity. TIP What I’ve just described is often referred to as the beginnings of “adrenal fatigue,” which exists in three stages. In order to assess cortisol levels and adrenal function, I recommended saliva or urine testing.
6. IMPROVE YOUR DIGESTION AND ELIMINATION Excess hormones are eliminated through our digestive system so having regular bowel movements and a healthy digestive system is crucial to proper hormonal function. New research shows the make up of the bacteria in the digestive tract (often referred to as the gut microbiome) has a major impact on hormonal balance. Imbalances in the flora in your gut and/or an increased permeability (aka leaky gut) activates the immune system, drives up insulin levels, disrupts blood sugar balance and can lead to hormonal imbalances and low thyroid function. Digestive system imbalances and food allergies also impair nutrient absorption, which further leads to hormonal imbalance. Avoid or moderate things known to disrupt optimal hormonal balance including caffeine, alcohol, hormonal contraceptives (ie. birth control) and sugar. In case you missed it last issue, I’ve created a Hormone Quiz that you can take to see if hormonal imbalance might be the cause of your health concerns. You can access the quiz here: www.drchelseagronick.com/hormone-quiz/ If you’ve been struggling with a thyroid, adrenal, weight loss resistance or hormone issue, a great first step would be to have your hormones tested with a naturopathic doctor.

MYLES MAT T ILA
Champion for Mental Health - You're Not Alone BY BRANDI PARNELL
As someone who has lost a loved one to suicide it was hard to resist writing about mental illness. Meeting Myles Mattila made it impossible.
I
f you’ve not heard of this young man, you will. He is not only a gifted athlete but also a young, promising leader. At almost 17 years of age, he is a friendly, outgoing kid who just happens to be speaking out on behalf of mental illness.

MINT Kelowna
Five years ago when Myles read about the passing of Vancouver Canuck player, Rick Rypien, he was deeply moved. He himself had a friend who struggled with mental health. That was the moment Myles was called to advocate on behalf of those who feel they no longer have a voice. He took the initiative and began raising awareness in his community to breakdown barriers and get folks talking about not only the subject, but also the stigma. Born in Quesnel B.C. with a passion for hockey, Myles learned to skate at the age of three. In 2013 with the support of his parents, the Mattilas moved to Prince George to expand Myles’ opportunities in both French education and sport. Currently living in Kelowna with his family, Myles plays right wing for the BCMML Okanagan Rockets team and continues to advocate for mental health. He is now in the 11th grade and the provincial youth
representative for mindcheck.ca, a website created to help young people identify and understand the mental distress they may be experiencing as well as provide resources.
out of our own heads and more into our hearts so that we are open to discuss difficult issues and more importantly, ready to act.
“At the end of the day, it’s not about who talks about mental health, it’s about people getting the help they need,” says Myles. “I feel very fortunate to have such a supportive, loving family. They help me to manage my commitments, especially my dad and are always willing to listen, and help where they can. Life would be a lot more stressful if I didn’t have them.”
“My goal is to share awareness about this issue. I want other people to take notice of their friend’s behaviours and speak up if you sense something is not right. We have to speak up, even if it is for someone else.”
Life can be overwhelming for everyone. Myles suggests planning ahead to be fully prepared for whatever situation you’re in and taking time to mentally focus on your task, be it hockey, school, work or let’s face it, life. But he also believes fully in speaking out.
You can catch up with Myles in the Play On! street hockey tournament brought to Kelowna by Choices Markets, proceeds from the UPS Corporate Division go directly to the United Way CSO; The tournament will be held on June 18th and 19th where he will not only be playing with teammates but also have an informational mental health booth on site.
“It is hard to manage all of the roles. This is why I believe in supporting awareness for mental health. I want to make sure people know they are not alone.” The career of an athlete can certainly pose challenges. Without scholarships, wanting something so badly you cannot control or having a public persona can all greatly impact a person’s mental state of mind. “It’s hard to manage everything. Mental health issues can affect anyone. No one would ever have imagined a tough guy; a good guy like Rypien could possibly be depressed.” Myles Mattila is an inspiration to us all. It’s no wonder he is a finalist for the City of Kelowna Young Male Volunteer of the year. Many people struggle just managing the proverbial rat race. Perhaps it’s time to get

Robyn Flinn of Perch Travelling Boutique is one such entrepreneur. But instead of serving up food, she’s selling vintage and retro clothing, footwear and accessories on the streets in a beautiful bus she painted herself. “I tag along with the food trucks as often as I can – it’s a perfect synergy,” she says. “I’m out here. I’m doing it. The season is short so you really have to make the most of it.” Perch Travelling Boutique is stocked full of pre-loved clothing in all sizes for everybody with a love of vintage, including men and mature individuals. And, if you don’t find it on the bus you can make a personal shopping appointment at her home studio. Perch Kelowna is starting out their fifth season on the road. “It’s probably the best place in Canada to have a traveling boutique. It’s fun and I love it. I can see the bus being open full time,” says Flinn. Regardless of the wares, food truckers cram a year’s worth of business into roughly eight months; the most successful trucks have a unique concept and a great story to tell. Customer service is paramount with the goal being an exciting, fun and different experience whether that be for a bite to eat or a new outfit. “If I didn’t have the support of my husband, I couldn’t do what I do. And of course, all of the positive feedback from my customers is what really drives me.” As for Ian and Heidi, “We absolutely love the variety of our business. It’s never the same, and that’s inspiring. We hope to elevate the industry as a whole and string together a group of committed truckers – whether they sell food, clothing or anything else that appeals to life on the road.” The dictionary defines a warrior as a person who shows or has shown great vigor or courage. LOVE WITH A SIDE OF PICO BY BRANDI PARNELL
PHOTOS BY SHAWN FILLION
American author Tom Robbins said,“Never underestimate how much assistance, how much satisfaction, how much comfort, how much soul and transcendence there might be in a well-made taco and a cold bottle of beer.” FROM THE BEGINNING
Ian Locket had been working down in California when he stumbled upon a food culture that would change his life. “It happened by accident really. I fell into the culture of eating off the trucks and was blown away by the different food options – all so diverse and equally delicious.” He stayed down south for nearly a decade before returning home to Kelowna.

Heidi Mecham had been in the catering industry working with her grandmother and toying with the idea of a mobile food business when she met Ian. Together they not only found one another, but a genuine love of authentic, mouth-watering food. “I love tacos,” says Ian. “Cali-style, fish tacos. I love the fresh flavours.” When Ian and Heidi started dating, they made it their mission to find the perfect tacos. From Penticton to Kelowna and everywhere in between, they searched to satisfy a longing.

“Every time we ordered fish tacos we were left disappointed. So we went into the kitchen and began crafting.” Today they have two trucks on the road, both of which they designed together, and a loyal following. Ian built the trucks along with his son, Brandon. “Since we opened, people come to try our tacos and keep coming back. We love hearing our customers tell us they’ve travelled the world and come home for the best tacos this side of the Baja,” says Heidi. Some of their staples include Surf Side Totchos, Crab Cake Tacos, Mahi Mahi Tacos and Slow Roasted Pork Tacos, and of course their inspiration, Fish Tacos. Notable sides include fresh made sauces and musttry pickle chips served with ancho chile sauce. They also prefer house-made breakfast burritos and warm cinnamon churros. “Our food is consistent. While we offer weekly specials, we haven’t changed our key flavours in three years.” If life is a wave, Ian and Heidi are riding it all throughout the Okanagan. Forerunners for bringing food truck rallies to the area, Ian and Heidi are just getting started.
“We love the mobility of our business. For me, I am on the window and it’s so great seeing the same friendly faces that follow us around town. We are in a different area daily,” says Heidi. “It’s always an adventure, every day and that’s part of the fun.” Loyalty isn’t reserved for just their customers. Their staff is a seasoned, committed crew. “We only work eight months of the year so we work really hard when we do. We are tight and happy, and work closely together.” Life isn’t easy being a food trucker, but Ian and Heidi take pride in knowing they were pioneers in the Kelowna food truck world. They followed their taste buds to sunny California and built a dream one ingredient, one part at a time. “It’s so exciting for us that we can say we built both of our food trucks by ourselves,” says Ian. “When the season is over, we put our feet in the sand, eat lots of food, soak up the sunshine and rejuvenate in the world of food trucks.” Until then, you can find Ian and Heidi of Surf Side California cruising around town, serving up the best tacos this side of the Baja. surfsidecalifornia

Or ‘her’ dream in Maegan’s case. You see Maeg yearned to follow in her father’s entrepreneurial footsteps. From a young age, she dreamt of being her own boss, having grown up underfoot in the restaurant business. A little universal magic met with a passion for more and the idea of dining with your favourite people on open water set sail. Her research led her to the Valley where the summers are warm and life on the water is everything. After much forecasting and a well sought out business plan, she approached her family about coming on board.
“I knew Kelowna was one of the most beautiful and fastest growing cities and I wanted to be a part of it. I wanted to create a business model that put people in picturesque surroundings with friendship and food. Kelowna’s vibrant waterfront is spotless synergy for this bright entrepreneur. “Once the idea had taken shape, I saw it was an opportunity to live my dream. What could be better than sending people out on the water for a meal in the most gorgeous surroundings? It’s a recipe for happiness,” she smiles. Maeg’s BBQ Boats opened in April after countless hours of hard work, a dedicated family and the perfect fiancée, Kevin. “I absolutely couldn’t have seen this dream come to fruition from the harbour in Vancouver to our grand opening without all of the support I received.” Maeg’s BBQ boats are eco-friendly, seat up to eight passengers and are the ideal way to gather, hang out or celebrate! They offer the option to bring your own food to BBQ or arrange menus through their selected caterer ready to cook upon arrival.
Best of all, you get to be the captain of your own boat. “It’s such a unique, fun and memorable experience. Great for all groups and events! I absolutely adore the concept of the circular table; it cultivates great conversation and closeness.” Her energy and approachability can be felt from across the lake. “This process has been so intense, from sourcing the boats to accounting for every dollar and cent. It’s been a journey in sound planning and learning to manage the setbacks. And somewhere along the way, it has given me an appreciation for the moments in life when we slow down and connect with loved ones.” To find your happiness, call or stop by Maeg’s BBQ Boats today.

During the winter of 2009, Mike Urban and a few friends went on a vacation to Europe. As happenstance would have it, that trip would change the trajectory of his career. “They say that change comes when least expected,” says Urban, of Urban Distilleries who back then owned an electronics business and made home brew as well as a few stills in his spare time. During his travels through France, he found himself in the Camus Cognac Distillery in Cognac. It was an inspiring discovery that stayed with him. Once home, the idea lingered. “I couldn’t help but think Kelowna could really benefit from a local spirit maker to complement the many wineries and breweries that already existed. I thought it might be an awesome business.”

Did you know?
The motivation behind their Spirit Bear line of handcrafted spirits is the Spirit Bear - the official animal of British Columbia. Spirit Bears, a wonder of Mother Nature, are endangered and protected sub-species.
And so with sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution not to mention, countless hours of research, planning, and licensing, Urban Distilleries was granted the first craft distillery license in British Columbia. Urban opened his doors for business in January 2011. “For the three years that followed, I basically ate, slept and worked at the distillery as my passion for craft distilling blossomed.” THERE ARE THREE CLASSIFICATIONS FOR A DISTILLERY. •
A Commercial Distillery produces high volumes of product at a low price.
•
A Craft Commercial Distillery brings in alcohol from commercial distilleries to be used in combination with their own products, blended and labeled as their own.
•
A Craft Distillery ferments and distills every product onsite, using only BC grown products with a limit on production to a maximum 50,000 litres produced per year.
Not long after that January day in 2011, Urban came to the realization that just maybe he had found his calling. “The feedback I received was overwhelmingly good. To test how good, I decided to enter our vodka, gin, whisky and amber rum into the International SIP awards. The competition contained over 300 entries.” Elated, Urban discovered his vodka won platinum, gin gold, rum silver and the whisky won bronze on the world stage. Each batch of Urban’s spirits are distilled in German made, artisan copper stills using premium Okanagan grains and fruits, as well as glacier water from the Kootenays. All products are gluten free and 100 per cent natural, with no artificial colours or flavourings. EXPERT ADVICE
Eight Steps to Seamlessly Buying a Home 1. GET PRE-APPROVED A pre-approval letter from a Mortgage Broker allows you to know exactly how much you can afford and will help to hone your search. 2. HIRE A REALTOR Realtors are free to buyers and because the seller pays for both realtors, it is in your best interest to have your own realtor to negotiate the best price for your new home. 3. VIEW PROPERTIES With your budget in hand and your realtor by your side, you will begin to look at properties that fit your criteria. I recommend making a list of ‘must-haves’ and ‘would-like-to-haves’ to help keep you focused. Most importantly, remember house hunting is all about location, location, location! 4. MAKE AN OFFER But know that typically, your first offer is not accepted. A skilled realtor will help you negotiate to get the best possible price and terms. Your offer will have conditions, called ‘subject-to’s.’ These two conditions are critical to your mortgage application. A) Subject to Financing - you and the property need to be approved by the lender. B) Subject to Inspection 5. GET APPROVED Your offer has been accepted. Now we need to confirm the final details before submitting your application. Upon approval, we will meet with you to review and sign the approval, answer any questions you may have and to go over closing costs - at no cost to you. Mortgage broker services are almost always free to the client. 6. PAY YOUR DEPOSIT With all of your conditions met (subjectto’s), you will write a non-refundable, certified cheque to be held in trust until closing. 7. MEET WITH YOUR LAWYER Usually, about a week before closing, your lawyer will arrange to meet with you to sign the final documents. 8. YOU ARE AN OWNER! Congratulations! Whether this is your first home or your 10th, I love helping people finance homes. Our office will contact you about a month after you have settled into your new place to ensure your payments are coming out as planned. We will also be in touch whenever we see an opportunity to further optimize your mortgage. Enjoy your new home! Sara Lussier - Impact Mortgages 1455 Ellis St #203, Kelowna 778-214-9411

Hot days and long nights are the perfect accompaniment to outdoor entertaining with your best pals. To make the most of your summer, we’ve laid out a line up of backyard party tips. Consider your outside space designed the same way you would set up any room in your house. Floors, wall, ceiling and accessories are all up for grabs when it comes to atmosphere.
Think tunes. Your playlist will reflect the mood for the night. Along with great cocktails! Start out the night with softer, background conversation-style music to begin. Launch into a faster tempo as guests begin to settle and feel the groove of the evening.
We love using broken marble and slate slabs from you local construction store or stone quarry for serving all your canapés and charcuteries. They are a steal to purchase, and sometimes if you get lucky, they thank you for taking them away.
Lighting, lighting, lighting! Subtle & sexy. Avoid any uprights or direct down light to avoid unflattering shadows for you and your guest.
Layer large vintage area rugs under large focal point pieces of furniture to warm up the space and encourage your guests to sink in and get comfortable.
Don’t worry about having all the same glassware. Eclectic and mix and match is way more exciting visually.
Plenty of ice! Always! Nothing more needs to be said about that detail. Find unique ways to store ice in your bar area. Vintage Coleman coolers in cute colours such as robin egg blues and classic olives all add to the setting. Pre-made ice cubes with a mint infusion placed in tall vases will double as centrepieces. Get creative. Most importantly, set the vibe for a great night. Cheers!

ligned in hearts, we at Mint gravitate to people who are committed to inspiration. We value balance, renewal and time spent in nature. Here are a few adorable ways to spruce up your backyard without a large investment. Whether you’re grilling steaks or making bacon and eggs on a Sunday morning, few sounds are as soothing as listening to the music of birds. Ken and Shannon of Kwasy Creations crafted birdhouses as well as trays, wine racks and more from recycled materials infused with a little bit of bling. Not only for the birds, these one-of-a-kind designs make the perfect gift. In the spirit of Mother Earth and preserving our environment, I’m Board Rustic Creations is a small Okanagan based company that specializes in upcycling, recycling, refurbishing and more. Lisa-Marie Pettlovello takes ordinary every day things people would normally consider junk and brings them back to life - with her own artistic flair.
In the spirit of creation and wine country, we at Mint have come up with a list of ways to upcycle your empty bottles. •
Make a bottle tree in your backyard. Weave in colourful flowering vines such as clematis, trumpet vine or morning glory for a statement garden piece.
•
Plant bottles upside down around your flowerbeds for a magical edging.
•
When going away for the weekend, fill empty bottles with water and flip them upside down in your planters. They’ll slowly water your plants while you’re away.
•
Use empty bottles as old school candle holders.
•
Drill a hole in the bottom of an empty wine bottle and thread through a string of white tree lights.
“There is nothing more rewarding than taking something old, worn out and forgotten, adding hard work, design and passion,” says Pettlovello. We couldn’t agree more.

TOP 5 PATIO
ESSENTIALS THIS SEASON
BY JILLIAN HARRIS PHOTOS JANIS NICOLAY

MINT Kelowna
For me patios aren’t just for the summer months … I love spending time out there in the Fall and Spring and have realized the easy transition is as simple as patio blankets & rugs. Who doesn’t love sitting outside with loved ones while enjoying not only a good glass of wine but also some fresh air?! 1. OUTDOOR PILLOWS, BLANKETS & RUGS Adding in either pillows, blankets, rugs or all of the above instantly makes the space warm. This is where you want to add in your pops of colour and bold patterns. Depending on the season you can go for anything from bright pinks and teals to warm oranges and greens. Nothing beats snuggling up in a cozy blanket at night when the weather starts to dip. Designate a few blankets to keep outside and store in a chest, in a basket or in a bin.
2. PATIO STRING LIGHTS The first thing I notice on someone’s patio is always the lights. Whether it be candles, torches, lantern or my new favourite … string lights!!! These add that special touch of uniqueness and instantly transform a space. Either drape them over top of the main patio table or even hang them along the bushes and throughout the trees. Wherever you put them they will look great. 3. PLATTERS Platters, platters, platters. You can never have too many platters. I like to vary them in shape, size and texture. I typically lean towards wooden planks, marble slabs and vintage silver trays. If you layer these throughout the setting it gives the entire table a look of authenticity. I love a space that looks well travelled and eclectic in layers. Platters aren’t just about how they look … it’s mainly about what’s on them!!! Have you tried our How To Charcuterie board yet!?!?
different chairs, stools, benches and ottomans … these are all easier to change in and out than an entirely new patio set each season. You can get the fun colour and seasonal looks from my first tip … just add blankets, pillows & rugs. You don’t want to have too much going on otherwise the eye will get distracted and overwhelmed. Focus on a few feature pieces and keep the rest simple. 5. SOUND SYSTEM Good music on the patio is sometimes all you need. When in doubt and if you don’t want to spend to much on a fully loaded sound system I recommend a portable speaker. They are good for any outdoor activity not just the patio and are in expensive in comparison. I recently discovered the LOGiiX Air Chamber speaker and not only love the gold … but the sound and fact that you can receive calls on it is pretty awesome too!! I always suggest investing in a good sound system because what’s a party without some good dancing tunes!?!
4. PATIO TABLE
What are your patio essentials in the transition into fall!?! I love hearing your tips!!!…
This is where I like to keep things simple. I always lean towards a simple planked black, white or wooden table with not much detail to it. I add in the special touches with

A GREAT YARD BEGINS WITH A GREAT DESIGN The most creative, artistic and functional landscape designs begin by listening first to the homeowner. Great design begins with a vision for how the space will be used, as well as the ambiance homeowners wish to achieve. At Exquisite, clients are encouraged to collect inspiring magazine clippings, drawings and photographs to create an idea portfolio and bring them to the design meetings. Pictures really are worth a thousand words in design. Then, working collaboratively with the Exquisite in-house designer, the planning begins and evolves. Finally Exquisite will provide everything a homeowner needs to achieve their dream outdoor space from on site consultations to a complete computer rendering. When asked why he loves his job, Nathan says, “My favourite part of the design process is seeing something the client wants that I haven’t seen before - something special, something unique. And then I like to create it for the client making it even better than they imagined. It’s why I do what I do. I want to give each client something significant and lasting.”
THE BEST LAID PLANS NEED THE MOST QUALIFIED CONSTRUCTION TEAMS With a background in construction and a diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, Nathan leads his team at Exquisite with experience and energy. His vision is to infuse function, beauty and value into every design they produce and every landscape they build. With a comprehensive understanding of the Okanagan’s semiarid climate, Exquisite brings knowledge and skill to their custom water features and planting designs. The services offered by Exquisite Lawn & Landscaping Ltd. are diverse and include custom concrete, patios, decks, fences, retaining walls, water features and plant installations/removals. Exquisite’s dedicated and talented construction team will provide a collaborative and pleasant construction experience and a final product that exceeds expectations.
EXQUISITE WORK SPEAKS FOR ITSELF Manicured yards, enviable outdoor living spaces and satisfied clients have been the best forms of advertising. Almost 95 per cent of Exquisite’s clients are return or referred homeowners. Nathan takes pride in his projects and stands behind the work his company performs. You’ll be talking about your Exquisite design and build experience at your next outdoor dinner party. In addition to the custom design and build work that Exquisite does, they also offer full service lawn and garden maintenance including comprehensive year round trouble free care for your property. t’s no secret fresh air and sunshine are natural healers for the soul. Numerous studies have been done on the benefits of spending time outdoors. In fact, research suggest being in nature increases attention and aides in creative problem solving. Albert Einstein said, “Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” One luxury of living in the Okanagan is its proximity to nature, it’s lack of concrete. As inspired beings here at Mint, we find the elements tend to resolve many issues office walls cannot. And, when we need to understand everything better, we lace up our sneakers and hit the trails. Hiking as a form of both physical and mental wellness has many benefits that extend far beyond cardiovascular health. In just one hour on the trails, you can burn up to 500

calories. What’s more, if you’ve ever increased the incline on a treadmill you know hill climbing is a weight loss ally. An hour spent in nature can increase inner peace and bring about a more natural alignment with flow. Hiking can be done solo, with a partner, with your pooch or as a family. Other than proper shoes, the novice routes require very little equipment investment. It is an activity that can be done year round if dressed appropriately, in a multitude of elements and free from boredom. An alternative to the gym, silence your smart phone and let you inner compass guide you to what your soul seeks. Stop to marvel at the miracles abound and feel grateful for every breath. Slow down, decompress and let nature be your guide.
Bonus – Don’t miss the wishing tree at the top, a perfect way to plant seeds for future abundance. The Wishing Tree has pens, paper and a string filled with notes left from fellow trail blazers. Share wisdom, an aspiration or leave a kind moniker.

Alexandra Babbel is a visionary, a musical leader. She sees vast stretches of beauty on the artistic horizon and has a list of accolades as accomplished as her career. She has a keen ability to bring multiple artists and art forms together. But perhaps her true raison d’être is the passion she shares with her students who develop under her tutelage as artistic director of Opera Kelowna.
Clearly, her method is effective. Opera Kelowna has recently been nominated for 9th Annual Okanagan Arts Awards for innovation.
“My career has been very exciting. It has taken me around the globe and I have performed with some very talented individuals. But the joy I have, as an educator, is one of my greatest loves. I train students with the intention that they will perform extraordinarily, transitioning pupils from an academic to a professional career.”
On Friday, May 13th at the Laurel Packing House, Alexandra and Opera Kelowna will host Enchanted, their annual fundraiser in support of the upcoming summer production of The Magic Flute.
A lyric soprano, Alexandra was the only Americanborn member of her family and as such, she approaches her music with a great sense of privilege. “My passion really lies in watching that next generation come forward,” she says. “Contemporary opera production is celebrating a changing world. Multiple art forms on one stage requires a vast amount of discipline. It’s about language, it’s physical, and fires up the left and right hemispheres of the brain. Opera requires focus, language and energy.” In her role at Opera Kelowna, Alexandra infuses every performance with the finest aspects of life from song to fashion, production to design. “As the Okanagan is growing into a more metropolitan community, much of what comes from Europe is still a new discovery here. It is important for me and my team to continue to educate ourselves in the area of music, art, dance and drama by traveling and taking in all of the art and couture we can in order to continue to stay on the cutting edge of performing arts.”

“I take great pride in knowing we merge world class talent with locally accessible culture. We offer a diverse opera experience from first-time attendees to seasoned guests. Everyone deserves the very best experience.”
“Opera is a very expensive genre. This one night is our opportunity to fund the season,” she says. “It is our chance to dress to the nines, sip ‘Magic Flute’ cocktails, dine on exquisite food, and bid on live and silent auctions all in support of a small theatre with great goals.” It will be a magical evening with performances that will be interspersed between dinner courses. There will be living trees and an indoor forest in hopes of raising funds for training, billeting, rehearsing, costuming, orchestrating and staging. Andrea Bocelli said, “Opera is complex for those who perform it, but also for those who listen to it. It takes more time, more patience and more spirit of sacrifice. All this is well worth it because opera offers such deep sensations that they will remain in a heart for a lifetime.” Please join Alexandra and Opera Kelowna to support the arts and most importantly, be enchanted. eld in the spring, this year’s April date aligned with our early temperate weather to deliver a fantastic weekend of shopping and inspiration. Featuring high quality, handmade items, this event speaks to Kelowna’s demand for unique artistic design and specialty items. Art enthusiasts of all ages wandered the aisles of the Kelowna Curling Club supporting the talent and enjoying a one-stop handmade shopping experience. The first 50 people through the door, each day, picked up a swag bag filled with samples and coupons for the vendors at this year’s fair, proving it pays to be early to Craft Culture events. “A premier crafters market should include a diversity of crafters. Artists who are wildly creative and bring passion and enthusiasm to their products as well as seasoned experts who understand their customers, and know how to meet their needs. This year’s vendors provided the perfect balance for a gratifying shopping experience. We’re learning and adapting the fair every year. It’s really exciting,” says Karalyn. With over 100 artisans participating in this year’s spring event, it’s clear Karalyn has worked yearround to provide balance and variety in the vendor lineup. From hand crafted rustic home décor and natural ingredient made lotions to preservativefree chocolate and sustainable clothing, Craft Culture’s Spring Market did not disappoint! A new vendor category this year included BC wineries and distilleries, complete with samples. This is not your
grandmother’s craft fair! The vibe at this market was upbeat and fun. Kids were entertained with face painting, a budding-crafters station, and a petting zoo featuring this spring’s newest baby animals. On the adult entertainment side, musical performances by local acoustic duos played while shoppers and vendors mixed. This was as much a social event as it was a shopping event. And the word is already out for Craft Culture’s highly anticipated Holiday Market (formerly the Kelowna Christmas Show). Kelowna’s largest and most celebrated craft fair will be returning to Prospera Place this winter. Home to more than 150 talented artisans from across Western Canada who come together in one place, this craft fair is a oneweekend extravaganza of handmade items. You’ll find unique gift ideas for everyone on your shopping list, including something for you. Craft Culture is about appreciating creativity, connecting entrepreneurs, and offering mindful shoppers an alternative to the mall. It’s about meeting the artisans who fashion what we love. It’s about a day out with the ladies. Watch the local event listings for dates and times for this year’s shows. Save the dates! For complete event information, visit www.craftculture.ca. BY BRANDI PARNELL
“There are painters who transform the sun to a yellow spot, but there are others who, with the help of their art and their intelligence, transform a yellow spot into sun.” PABLO PICASSO
S
hannon Cross was born in Vancouver, British Columbia and grew up in Penticton. While formally educated in kinesiology, her heart traveled around the United States and Europe, living in both, with her husband Cory. Those experiences, the culture and the energy of each city carved out a space within. The landscapes, the cityscapes and the myriad of beautiful colours all called her to paint. “I am a self-taught artist,” she says. “I like the idea of being wide open to create anything I want. I am always learning and don’t believe there is just one way to paint. Art in any form is an expression. I incorporate many layers of acrylic paint to create something rich and interesting. I move within a piece and add colour, light and texture as I go.” Most often Shannon is drawn to earthy tones and inspired by waterscapes, which are illustrated, in her Lake Series; but she is also drawn to the city and enjoys street works, and art with a more industrial flair. “I love having the freedom to move from one genre to the next. I am always inspired in galleries and by other artists.” Nature and cities also motivate Shannon to pick up her brushes. Our life speaks to us at different stages for different reasons. Often we are affected by our circumstances and especially our

surroundings. And so it stands to reason that Shannon’s work calls to a gamut of people for many different reasons. Her work has been described as modern contemporary and can be found in show homes, offices and private home collections around Canada but especially here in Kelowna. “I have lived in many urban centres, some great and some not so great, but they all make me feel a certain way. The collection I’m working on now has an urban, SoHo metro feel to it. Depending on what moves me in the moment, I might do a series until I’ve had my fill and then move on.” Having spent the past two years overseeing the build of her own home, Shannon incorporated her love of architecture and design into every room. In fact, her art studio faces the lake with large open windows and the most incredible views of the lake and the mountains – a necessity for an artist and mother of two young children. Her fine art is available through her website. For now, she is focused on her locally commissioned pieces and selling her creations organically. “I’ve always wanted to try watercolor and I just might one day. I also want to try more abstract urban art. Maybe I’ll take up graffiti,” she laughs. “I would love to do that with my kids.” Until then, Shannon can be found creatively commuting between the Valley and Calgary where she paints for Dekora Design. She teaches at Opus Art and plans to host her own classes this fall.
Shannon works with all budgets and charges per square inch, not by how much time or paint goes into a piece, to ensure consistent pricing. “I urge potential clients to contact me and we can talk about what they envision and their price range.” To discuss a commissioned piece or any of Shannon’s artwork currently available, please call or visit her website.

Interior designer, Nate Berkus said, “Your home should tell the story of who you are, and be a collection of what you love - brought together under one roof.” Cathy Biagi, a long-time creator and lover of artistic expression, knows the value of collecting things she loves and more importantly, bringing them together under one roof. A picture framer for more than 30 years, she’s been at Ritchcraft for the past 10, having purchased the gallery four years ago. “I’ve decided to put away my paints and focus on helping other artists showcase, highlight and share their talents with the world.” For Cathy, purchasing Ritchcraft felt like coming home. She admits she couldn’t be more grateful for the love and support she’s received from her husband and two daughters. “I’ve discovered a lot about myself by taking over the gallery. The art world and working with creative people is always moving and evolving. Every day is new and inspiring, quite frankly, challenging. But one thing’s for certain, I am right where I belong.” Because framing is both an art and a science, Cathy combines her training and experience to guide customers to the proper decision about what looks best for their art. “When it comes to framing, I am very confident I can help direct people to a finished product they’ll love.”
From memorabilia to personal photographs and certificates, framing not only preserves history but also celebrates the senses in mixed media art. “I always tell my clients to keep their art. I am seeing many people come in who are downsizing, renovating or moving into a new space. New matting and a fresh frame can change the look and feel of a piece. KICKIN’ BACK, GIVING BACK, LOVIN’ LIFE BY BRANDI PARNELL PHOTOS JENNY KAMO
new business is coming to the lake this summer with the intention to help locals and tourists alike make the most of days spent on the water. Kickin’ Back Boat Rentals offers hourly, daily and multiday rentals so you don’t need to own a boat to enjoy the water.

Jason and Ashley Kolberg successfully ran two oilfield service companies. They worked long hours, felt uninspired and were plagued with the notion that there had to be more to life than they were living. “We were working hard and our businesses were doing well but we were really lacking passion. We knew we needed to make a change,” says Ashley. And so like any other great risk takers, they listened to their intuition and decided to reroute their life from the oilfields to Lake Country “We wanted to live a simpler lifestyle, so we decided to move west and love our life.” Kickin’ Back is their new mantra. It is a service driven, leisure concept, designed to remind people to step out of the ‘work more mindset’ and into the now. It’s all about seizing the day and soaking up every bit of joy that grows in the Okanagan. “Our goal is to offer outstanding customer service to our local neighbours and visitors from afar. We want to work hard but feel a sense of accomplishment seeing satisfied and repeat customers every time they come off the water,” says Jason. Kickin’ Back will have stand up paddleboards (SUP), a 20 ft. Four Winns SS with a wake board tower and the area’s only 24 ft. Premier double-decker pontoon boat. “We wanted to offer a boat for rent that is currently not available in the area. We feel it’s important to cater to
families because we know that the best memories are made at the lake while lounging on a boat with your friends or family,” says Ashley. And, because the most relaxing time of day can be the long, sunny evenings, Kickin’ Back will also offer an evening cruise. “We’re thrilled to be offering a chartered sunset cruise which will include a driver,”says Jason - although a driver is always an option should someone wish to include that service in their rental. As part of their new approach to life, Kickin’ Back will be adopting a road in the District of Lake Country and doing their part to help keep the area beautiful by volunteering their labour to help collect litter and debris. “We think giving back to the community is a really important part of being a business owner, ,” says Ashley. “Plus, its just good karma.” You don’t need a boat license to rent, you simply need to complete a boat safety checklist to verify competency. So go ahead, golf all day and book a sunset cruise. Or take an hour and paddle your way happy. If adventure is more your style, rent the wakeboard board with all gear for an exhilaratingly good time. Kickin’ Back is all about custom leisure with the best customer service to optimize all the lake has to offer. THE REPAIR REVOLUTION BY BRITTANY HARRISON PHOTOS BY ALISHA KHAN
hat is the result when three tech aficionados combine their passion to assist Kelownan’s in their pursuit for unrivaled performance of their devices? The entrepreneurs of Repair Express, William Walczak, Hayley Moffatt and Jordan Moffatt have the answer and it began with transforming the Okanagan’s experience with its flagship store, Fix my Touch in Kelowna, BC. Offering device repair ranging from phones, tablets, and laptops, as well as water damage restoration, and device unlocking. Responding to the demand felt in 2009, co-owner Walczak reminisces about the company’s early success and projections for growth,

“Within a very short period of time we had managed to get really good growth and we started thinking why aren’t we templating this, why aren’t we opening more stores? So that is what we did.” Now called Repair Express, the trios optimism of the company has transformed into proven confidence as the original store has been successfully duplicated, expanding to four storefronts within the Okanagan Valley, including Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton, and West Kelowna. The entrepreneurs also put focus on giving back to the communities that they serve with community involvement initiatives benefiting the Canadian Diabetes Association. As a home grown franchise, the appeal for local business owners to rely on attentive local servicers verses big box nationwide brands has led to Repair Express gaining a reputable track record for saving the day of small businesses within the Interior. What does the local success mean to Walczak? “We are extremely proud of our efforts and reputation within the Okanagan Valley. This is our home and the residents and business professionals we assist keep business flow

within our community. Providing that small community attention to our clients is a mind set we have taken with us in a larger scale.” Now experiencing growth that has expanded to service beyond the Okanagan, they say a key aspect of their success is selecting key partners in each store, citing local experts such as Dallas Teale of Vernon who boasts nominations for Vernon’s entrepreneur of the year. And Lukasz Pelka in West Kelowna, has been hailed for saving university students their lost thesis papers into the abyss of a lonely blue error screen (we know we have all been there!). While the expertise of the partners speak for themselves, Repair Express also utilizes its local connections with its marketing efforts attributed to Hiilite Creative Group of Kelowna, BC. “We have a fantastic local marketing team that has been a catalyst to our success. We are in front of the right people, on the right channels, with the right message and then tracking and converting them into clients and friends” beams Hayley Moffatt. “We’re proud of what we do, and who we do it with.”
What’s next for the tech savvy experts? Moffatt weighs in, “We want to maintain the connections we have made within our communities, identify the needs of residents and business professionals and help support the booming tech industry developing in the Okanagan.” With goals on the horizon to double their locations in 2016 alone, spanning to include Kamloops, Prince George, and Grand Forks, Repair Express is a great example of the entrepreneurial spirit of the Okanagan.

HUMILITY IN CSEK BY BRANDI PARNELL
Elon Musk said, “I could either watch it happen, or be a part of it.” sek Creative would agree. Recently merged with Pulse Group, Csek is a “thinking” agency. In other words, the creative process is just as valuable as the end product. Csek is a place where ideas flow, where advice, experience, and the simple act of asking questions builds relationships, which in turn generates new growth. It is a business built on clear communication and a collaborative approach to bringing brands to market better than anyone else.

“The one thing I hear often from people after meeting with us is, ‘Wow I just didn’t know,’” says CEO Nikki Csek. Csek’s offerings are completely comprehensive from web to print; they build branding and marketing campaigns, but most importantly, they create custom business solutions to help grow businesses and especially, their bottom lines. With quiet humility she says, “Honestly, it is impressive.” Over many years, Csek grew their client base with respectful practices, always aware of delivering the unsurpassed outcomes for their clients all the while attempting to balance growth and retain their portfolio of existing clients. Now, with the Pulse Group merger, they are the largest agency in the interior of B.C. bar none. Not to mention, they house everything under a single roof.

“I recall in the past, having to decline to quote on projects because of a real need to service our existing clients. We are very intentional with not only our growth but also with our values.” Ironically, their expertise at marketing their clients didn’t extend to boasting of any kind. Instead, they remain committed to who they were when they first started out. “It’s really exciting to know the level of competencies and the array of services we can support here,” says Nikki. The ability to create almost any marketing plan paired with genuine, forward-thinking staff is the magic of Csek. “Everyone we employ is not only talented but gives their all. We jump in the trenches to work with home based, seasonal, solo ventures, all the way up to very large organizations with very massive marketing budgets. We feel very grateful.” ALL ENCOMPASSING, ALL IN “There are a few things you’ll never hear at Csek. No one will ever say, that’s not my job or that can’t be done. Our culture has developed perhaps by leading through example. It is one of possibility and of hard work.” In other words, Csek’s approach to every project they accept is that they roll up their creative sleeves,

consider all options and get to work. After all, their success is contingent on that of their clients and no one knows that better than they do. “We come to every venture looking at it first and foremost from a business mindset so we’re conscious of what we will be measured against and then we create processes to meet those expectations, given our strengths. It is a partnership of sorts.” Csek is a marketing and web design agency where rigidity does not exist; the options are fluid and tailored. They create packages, knowing they’re earning their clients’ business each and every time they get to work. A knowledge leader in branding, digital media solutions and digital marketing, they understand how to put it all to work, providing critical strategic and tactical support to businesses
in Canada, the US, the United Kingdom and other countries in Europe. “It’s exciting. There has been a real shift in the industry as a whole, and no matter the sector, there is a need for companies to be writing stories about what they’re doing and the services they’re offering. We have a strong content team here at Csek who are writing those stories and taking them to the public.” Whether you’re in the market to create a brand or rebrand an existing business, Csek will help you tell your story - no matter the platform. “In 2016 we plan to continue to expand our creative landscape, growing our content as well as our video and photography teams. We employ 30 staff and expect we’ll be adding to that number.” With aggressive growth plans including managing a number of new Now portals - Csek is the founder of KelownaNow - they plan on taking what they have perfected and repeating it throughout the province. If you’re in the market for an agency that can help you tell your story, regardless of budget or scope, call or visit Csek today.
