From Our Publisher
RHONDA TANNAHILL This summer has been a series of Okanagan adventures, networking with clients who have become friends and taking part of various community events. I had the pleasure of attending the 7th Annual and Final Basran Open with Mayor Colin Basran with a few of my clients and friends and the day was enjoyed by all. In this issue we take a look inside City Hall as we sat down with the Mayor himself. An absolute highlight for me this summer was volunteering and sponsoring a car in the Okanagan Dream Rally. As you know, we featured The August Family Foundation in our first issue of 2016. They are a dynamic group of individuals who just happen to be related. They are as driven as they are kind. That day was one of the best days I’ve spent and the smiles I saw on the faces of children I won’t soon forget. I am so proud to have been a part of such an incredible day and look forward to next year.

Apply L’Oreal Professionnel Beach Waves to damp hair and power dry to boost your hair’s natural texture. STEP 2 Section your hair into pieces leaving everything below the top of your ear down. STEP 3 Use L’Oreal Professionnel Constructor to set the hair. Begin curling with a 1¼ inch iron, wrapping hair from the mid strand up to the root; glide through finishing with the ends last. PRO TIP Alternate curling directions to create more volume and texture. STEP 4 Let down the pinned section of hair and repeat. Finish top section by curling face-framing pieces away from your face. STEP 5 Let hair cool down and use fingers to gently rake through to loosen up the waves. STEP 6 Complete the look by lifting at the root and spraying in L’Oreal Professionnel 60’s Babe Savage Panache to amplify volume and add texture. Smile! You look beautiful. 12

GEORGIE GIRL Redefining Vintage Fashion
PHOTOS SHARLA PIKE
T
he Georgie Girls want you rethink everything you have ever assumed about shopping for second hand clothing. Clearly it is an economical and eco-friendly way to treasure hunt. But can it be hyper-fashion forward, your go-to in pursuit of your dream OOTD? Read on. Fashion has been an instinctive love for Angie Bricker, founder of Georgie Girl, for as long as she remembers. As a child she designed her own clothing to sew, and her favourite pastime was outfitting paper dolls with her own designs. During ‘the Vancouver years’ in the 1980’s, the art of dressing for her became a passion – an obsession. After moving back to Kelowna, her interest in fashion never dimmed. Even so, she did not think to make it her calling, even though, starting in 1996, she owned and operated a successful retail shop for children. After an inspired re-location of the children’s shop to Downtown Kelowna in 2010, Angie found herself restless and ready for change. It still took encouragement from her customers to convince Angie that a vintage clothing shop was the perfect fit for her love of fashion and background in retail. Once decided, the Georgie Girl name was chosen, the signs were changed and it all came together with a heartbeat. Angie’s vision for Georgie Girl is a fresh, upscale approach to selling second hand clothing. Presentation and merchandising is supremely important: vetting of each and every garment critical. Processing dozens of new arrivals on a daily basis and keeping it organized and impeccable for the customer keeps the shop a beehive of style, and fashion activity. When customers ask Angie what her favourite finds are she says, “Vintage denim and graphic shirts speak to me. I am a jeans and tee girl all the way.” None

the less, her heart beats faster at the discovery of premium jazz age apparel or a stunning wasp-waist 1950’s dress. Unique in the consignment world, the Georgie Girls accept intake seven days a week, no appointment necessary. “We truly appreciate and value the relationship we have with our consigners. Often, through the original owner or family, we are able to track the history of an item. It’s very exciting to be able to keep the story alive for the next lucky fashion lover.” Alicia Meier has been the store manager since opening day. Customers know her for her warm and honest styling services; she will bring garment after garment to you in the changing room to help you find just the perfect pieces. Hannah Kehler joined Georgie Girl in the duo roles of sales and creative director in May. She can be found out and about directing and shooting creatives for Georgie Girl, and she is working on the logistics for an enhanced online presence for the shop. Most important to the Georgie Girl team is the collaborations within the community, especially in the North End of Downtown Kelowna. This area, once dormant and industrial, is now bustling with creative energy. Angie and her team have participated in fashion shoots, theatre performances and music presentations with incredibly talented local artists. What’s next for the Georgie Girls? These ladies have a crazy and fun idea every minute so stay in touch on their vibrant and fun social media to find out! “I used to own a regular jewellery store filled with the same inventory as everyone else. But I realized as a goldsmith I am more passionate than accepting average. I want to see one-of-kind dreams come to life. I have a vision to craft pieces that are timeless. And to be a part of taking pieces that have been passed down from long ago and recreating them.” At The Bench clients collaborate and share their wishes with the goldsmith. It’s a process of working in tandem to achieve a statement piece reflective of each client. The Bench is Canadian owned, trustworthy, professional and innovative. They select top quality diamonds and gemstones, and work mostly with 18 and 19-carat gold and platinum metal, however they will work with any medium. Located in a very exciting area of West Avenue in south Pandosy, “Kelowna has been welcoming and accommodating. I’m very thankful,” says Rob. “When it comes to your gems, honesty and trust is key. We do hand engraving and hand-carved waxes. That sort of care and detail is simply unmatched with technology.” The Bench isn’t about average jewellery, average service. They don’t polish mass produced pieces that sit in glass cases waiting to be bought. The Bench is about building relationships, with their customers and the pieces they craft. “Jewellery is a very personal expression of one’s life. It is a timeline of sorts, represents your moods, your milestones. It can express sentiments and celebrations as well as mark memories. We’re here to help create pieces that will one day become heirloom – jewellery our clients have been wanting to make for years.” The Bench will also service any type of jewellery. They select and bring in house the best stones combined with even better craftsmanship from the area’s most well respected talent. In our 20’s, hormones and metabolism are at their peak. Often we feel our most fit, slim and energized selves. As such, we don’t need to spend time thinking about our bodies’ capacity to run efficiently. However, as we enter our 30’s, everything changes.
O
ur 30’s can be one of the busiest times in our lives, whether we’re consumed with a growing family or building a career. And because we look and more importantly feel as though we’re still 20, we continue to make 20-year old choices in regards to our health and lifestyle. Yet, because our hormones and metabolism are now much more directly under the influence of our lifestyle choices, what we could get by with in our 20’s, won’t cut it anymore. High stress from work, family and financial obligations can lead to dysregulation of the adrenal glands and cortisol. Cortisol is a key hormone that helps us to manage stressors, counter inflammation, and keeps us awake, alert, focused and energized throughout the day. Some of the key symptoms of high cortisol are difficulty sleeping, morning fatigue, afternoon energy crashes, frequent colds and flus, headaches and pain, anxiety and depression, cravings for sugary, starchy foods and alcohol, and the dreaded midsection weight gain. Cortisol imbalances can cause all the others hormones to become negatively affected. In this state, it’s important to get your thyroid checked, especially free T3 levels as cortisol can lower the amount of active thyroid hormone in your system, despite normal TSH. Yes, you can literally stress yourself hypothyroid.
Here are a few ways to help lower cortisol levels and get ahead of the hormone domino-effect:
EAT HIGH QUALITY PROTEIN & VEGGIES AT EVERY MEAL. High cortisol causes food cravings. By planning your meals around whole proteins such as fish, eggs, poultry and meat as well as fiber-rich veggies, lentils and legumes, you’ll have less cravings and a greater sense of satiety after meals.
AVOID SKIPPING MEALS. Cortisol is responsible for keeping our blood sugar levels from dropping too low between meals. Skipping meals further exacerbates elevated cortisol. An empty stomach will also leave you irritable, shaky, light-headed and hangry.
SKIP DRINKING COFFEE ALL DAY LONG AND HYDRATE. Caffeine has been shown to raise cortisol levels and causes dehydration, which further raises cortisol. Opt for green tea or herbal tea once your morning cup is empty and for every caffeine-containing beverage, wash it down with a big glass of water.
GO EASY ON ALCOHOL. Alcohol has been shown to raise cortisol. PRIORITIZE TIME FOR EXERCISE AND MEAL PREP. Don’t put your own needs on the back burner for the sake of your family. Being your healthiest, happiest, most energetic self benefits your spouse, your children and everyone around you. ‘I don’t have time,’ is a theory that will backfire at some point. At some point, our bodies are unable to sustain these high levels of stress and cortisol, which sets us up for hormonal chaos in our 40’s and 50’s. In the upcoming issues, I’ll discuss how this happens, and strategies to make them the best years of your life.

Patients LOVE Digital Dentistry! Amazing technology surrounds us all and touches every aspect of our lives. Dental care, too, is currently witnessing its own digital revolution and high tech clinical innovations are already improving patient experiences at the dentist. In fact, ‘digital dentistry’ has completely reinvented many standard dental procedures making dental visits faster, more convenient and more comfortable. WHAT IS DIGITAL DENTISTRY? Much of what we do in dentistry requires models or replicas of your teeth. These models are used to make restorations such as crowns, bridges or dentures, for example. Conventional methods use stone models, but making the models takes time and accuracy of the model isn’t always predictable.
AS A PATIENT, WHAT IS THE BENEFIT TO ME? 1. TIME Some dentists have acquired a specific digital technology that enables them to make restorations such as crowns and veneers in a single visit, right in the dental office. What used to take two weeks is now achieved in approximately 90 minutes or less, and without the need for uncomfortable temporary crowns. This translates into fewer dental visits as well. 2. COMFORT Digital dentistry eliminates the messy impression pastes used in the past. The laser scanner is similar to a toothbrush in size and captures detailed images of your teeth quickly and comfortably.
Digital dentistry uses special laser scanning devices to capture extremely accurate replicas of your mouth and replaces the need for conventional stone models.
3. PRECISION Digital models of your mouth are the most accurate models possible. This means you receive the very best quality and fit of whatever your restoration may be.This technology is now used routinely to make dentures, crowns, veneers, bridges, nightguards, Invisalign and implant solutions as well.
These new virtual models are actually digital files that can be shared electronically with other dentists and dental technicians. Restorations can then be designed virtually using special computer software instead of being made entirely by hand, making the entire process much more efficient, predictable and more precise.
Digital dentistry has revolutionized dental care and continues to improve patient experiences at the dentist. Faster treatments, excellent quality and fewer visits - all with more comfort than ever before. Ask your dentist about digital treatment solutions and how they can make your next dental visit even better!

N
ewly opened this spring, entrepreneurs and forward thinkers, Banee and Navee Sandhu have introduced innovative European relaxation techniques to the Valley. Float therapy is born from a holistic approach to wellness. “Our North American culture is very concerned with how people look. Few people understand how to strengthen their brain and care for their mind and body, from the inside out. Float therapy ensures mental relaxation allowing for total rejuvenation,” says Banee.

Float therapy uses zero gravity dynamics to create a complete sensory deprivation environment. This unique experience is an escape from distractions such as environmental light and sound, electronic devices and time demands. While drifting towards your best self, health benefits include mood elevation through a reduction in stress and anxiety, decreased symptoms of depression and diminished burn out. Pain relief, alleviated headaches, relaxed overworked joints and muscles from traditional high impact workouts, and detoxification of the nervous system are common benefits. Other powerful takeaways include a reintroducing of peace, increased mental acumen, improved memory, productivity and creativity, as well as an overall sense of rest and restorative mediation while floating. Generally a feeling of well-being and improved sleep quality at night means a recharging of your day, week and self. Banee believes in the power of the mind and the ability to choose your life path. William Penn, philosopher said, “The secret of happiness is to count your blessings while others are adding up their troubles.”
At GRAVITY Float & Wellness their mission is to ensure that your float experience is customized to your particular needs and that you are completely comfortable with your float. Have you ever heard someone boast of having 20/20 vision? Felt envious about the notion of textbook sight? In truth, “perfect vision” encompasses many factors, not simply visual clarity. In fact, there are several other measurable and equally important factors that must be considered when it comes to visual performance. DR. PAUL ROLLETT, DEVELOPMENTAL OPTOMETRIST

Now available right here in the Okanagan for the entire interior of BC to access, Okanagan Vision Therapy is helping its patients rehabilitate their vision. “Vision therapy was previously only available in larger urban centres such as Vancouver or Calgary,” says owner and developmental optometrist, Dr. Paul Rollett. “Vision is a learned process. We acquire much of our knowledge of the world through our eyes. When that sense is compromised, everything else can become more challenging.” Dr. Rollett knows the challenges firsthand. He sustained a sports-related concussion that posed problems with his sight for some time. “It was nearly impossible for me to team and fuse my eyes. However, I was told to just accept it, live with it and wait for time to heal. Once I discovered vision training, it made such an impact on me that I decided to concentrate my area of focus on improving the lives of patients who suffer, so that they no longer had to just accept the struggles.” Okanagan Vision Therapy specializes in treating visionrelated learning difficulties, sports vision training and neuro-visual rehabilitation.
VISION-RELATED LEARNING DIFFICULTIES
80 per cent of all classroom-based learning is visual in nature. Inefficiencies in how we use our eyes or visual processing system can therefore contribute to a host of issues that arise in the classroom, as well as in sports and other areas of life. Vision therapy is a clear option for a bright child that seems to be struggling in school or an athlete with persistent visual issues. Reading skill, attention, balance, eye turns, lazy eyes, and the visual sequelae following brain injury can all be improved with non-invasive vision therapy treatments.
NEURO-VISUAL REHABILITAION Many of the brain injuries Dr. Rollett and his team see come as a result of a motor vehicle or workplace accidents. Vision is one of the slowest systems to rehabilitate after brain injury, so there is now more hope for someone who is recovering. “We offer solutions for people who are dealing with these issues and not sure where to turn to regain function,” says Dr. Rollett.
SPORTS VISION TRAINING “We also work with high-level athletes who are engaging in some form of vision training - people looking to take their athletics to the next level and aim to be as effective as possible on the field, the pitch, the diamond or the ice.”
Don’t believe an eye exam is the sole indication of vision performance, nor tolerate a symptomatic life. If you have a child struggling in school, are a high-level athlete or have suffered a brain injury, it’s time to consider vision therapy. Don’t accept 20/20 as the end of the road. Instead, see Okanagan Vision Therapy as a solution. For more information or to book an appointment, call today.

We all have mental health challenges in varying degrees, yet many stereotypes persist.
T
he Pihl family is helping to breakdown the stigma surrounding mental health issues. Jody and Sean Pihl, lawyers at Pihl Law Corporation, have 13 yearold twin sons Sasha and Finn. Finn had always been a worrier but when he reached nine-years-old, his parents realized Finn’s worries were more serious as Finn began demonstrating symptoms of depression and anxiety. We sat down with the Pihls as they shared their journey.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR EXPERIENCE IN GETTING HELP FOR FINN?
WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WANT TO TELL OTHER FAMILIES?
It’s not an easy road. We started with our General Practitioner and ended up over a year later with a team of treators.
We have learned that most families who have been through this share a sense of relief once they have a diagnosis, a plan and the support they need to help their family member get healthier. The hardest thing is overcoming the fear of the unknown and the stigma of mental illness.
One of the biggest challenges as a family is navigating the system alone. This meant that Finn had to tell his story over and over again, which was really hard on him and us. We had to be tireless advocates for our son. Only one-in-five children get the help they need. We are fortunate to be in a position to access private services where many people are not. This is unacceptable. All children should have access to mental health services.
WHICH SUPPORTS HAVE BEEN MOST VALUABLE FOR YOUR FAMILY? We have received fantastic support from our community. We are fortunate in Kelowna to have amazing professionals and organizations that assist families. School District 23 staff and recreational providers have also been supportive. Our experience is that people want to help but they can’t unless they know what is happening. The most meaningful supports have been those amazing friends who patiently accept us for who we are.
HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN YOU GOT ANSWERS? As parents, we felt hope for the first time in a long time. Finally we had a plan to help Finn feel better. It was also a relief for Finn to finally understand why, to know that he wasn’t “broken,” and to know that there are people who can help him feel better.
WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO BREAK DOWN THE STIGMA? You need to accept that mental illness is an illness like any other. This means checking our fears and insecurities at the door. What’s really amazing is when you share your story; it encourages others to share theirs. Everyone has one, whether it’s a relative, friend, or co-worker. People want and need to talk about mental illness and we believe that starting conversations with people in your life is the most powerful way to break the stigma of mental illness.
FINN, WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WANT TO TELL OTHER KIDS? There are lots of other kids living with anxiety and there are people who can help you fight it. I used to feel there was nothing I could do about it and that would lead to feelings of hopelessness. I now have strategies and know what I’m dealing with which has made me feel more hopeful and stronger and happier.

Residents of all ages, backgrounds and attachments to mental health wellness have begun to submit their photos to Jessica, to be painted for the highly anticipated exhibit. “People and their images are unique and should be treated that way. Everyone has beauty, not just the young. I encourage everyone to be proud of who they are and step-up in support of mental health awareness.” Completed portraits are currently on rotational display in Kelowna at Third Space Coffee in the Landmark 2 Building on Dolphin Avenue. The completed collection will be sold at auction. Proceeds from the project will help fund wellness initiatives for Kelowna citizens through the CMHA, Kelowna District Branch. Sitters will of course have priority access to their own portraits, but are under no obligation to buy. Each sitter will receive a digital image of his or her painting. DIRECTIONS To begin, cut asparagus into one inch pieces and reserve. In a large saucepot, heat oil for 15 seconds then add onions and asparagus. Sweat for two minutes before adding the garlic. Once vegetables have sweat, add stock and bay leaves. Simmer until ingredients are tender (approximately seven minutes). While vegetables are simmering, warm cream with smoked cheddar cheese and stir until well incorporated. Using a blender, first remove bay leaf, then blend asparagus, onions, garlic and stock. Once smooth, return to saucepot and whisk in warm cream/cheese mixture. Add remaining ingredients and cook on low for approximately 15 minutes until consistency has thickened. It has been said that a place holds onto the energy of its inhabitants long after they’re gone. What once was an apple orchard now grows Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Ehrenfelser, Pinot Gris and Pinotage.
T
he View Winery is sowed deeply with hard work, tenacity and togetherness. For five generations, the land has belonged to the Turton/Ward family. The family’s legacy is felt when you visit their last-fromits-era, vintage apple packing house turned winery. Today great-granddaughter Jennifer Turton-Molgat is president of The View Winery. She conducts business with a level head and a heart full of fun. Her family’s passionate land pioneers live on in her. “People can feel the history and authenticity here, it’s charming,” she says. Right timing and an openness to uncover all opportunities have been instrumental in Jennifer’s life and especially at The View. “My father had entered into the cider industry , which made sense since my family has been growing apples since 1918. However in 2006 when there were some changes,, he came to me and said, ‘You once told me you wanted to start a winery one day. If you get a winery license for my cider project, you can start the winery on the family property.”
Knowing she couldn’t possibly pass up such an opportunity, she put on her infamous red heels and got to work. “Other than a personal love of wine and a basic knowledge of food pairing, I was completely uneducated about the wine business. I met as many people in the industry as I could. I learned and learned and learned. I took sommelier courses and surrounded myself with passionate, knowledgeable people.” A zest for life, she was committed to navigating her way through row upon row of grapes. “It’s certainly hasn’t been easy, but it has been incredibly rewarding. I feel so fortunate every day.” When issues arise, as is commonplace in any business, she optimistically and creatively seeks solutions. “In 2013, 75 per cent of the vineyard was wiped out by a terrible hail storm. The vines, especially the leaves, were obliterated, which meant the remaining grapes weren’t able to ripen fully. We had to think outside the box.” And that’s how BLING Sparkling Rosé

Cover Story The View was the first winery in Canada to do a Pinotage rosé and this year they released a delicious blanc de noir labelled White Pinotage 2015. Winemaker, Mike Anderson is the man behind the White Pinotage. “He is an innovative perfectionist who works on each wine until it is exactly as he imagined. He won’t release anything that doesn’t meet his expectations.” The View’s caliber of people may be as notable as their historical apple packing house setting. The tasting room and wine shop is set right in the cellar amid sexy stainless steel tanks and oak barrels. They are a fun meet glamour winery combined with a rustic authenticity. “Our guests enjoy coming right into the cellar. Sampling our wines in amongst the equipment gives people a sense of being a part of the process, of what is in their glass.” A high-energy person by nature, Jennifer is appreciative looking back yet inspired for the future. “I have a willingness to figure out the answers and believe in surrounding myself with brilliant people”.
was born. “Because it is a lower alcohol wine made from early harvested grapes, we were able to make a sparkling vintage, which thankfully was really wellreceived. It just took off. And that’s how so much of our business has developed, by seeing opportunities, not impossibilities.” “I am a huge believer in the power of positive thinking. Sometimes we take a step sideways or even backwards, but we don’t give up. If you persist, eventually you will get to where you were headed.” This year, Jennifer and her team at The View was validated for their efforts by winning Gold at the 2016 National Wine Awards of Canada for their 2015 Ehrenfelser and Gold at The All Canadian Wine Championships for their Gewurztraminer 2015. Located in South Kelowna with spectacular views of Kelowna and Okanagan Lake, the northern lake exposure and sandy loam soil help to create their site-specific wines. “Our Pinotage was a decision of the heart. My father had close friends in South Africa. He traveled there and fell in love with the wine. I think people thought he was crazy when he returned home with a decision to grow Pinotage; in hindsight, it was the right decision because it is an early ripening red - perfect for our region,” she says.

Jennifer gains support from her incredible husband Kent and her two amazing daughters, Madeleine and Phoebe. In her down time she takes part in equestrian show jumping and is smitten with the equine love of her life, Lazaro. Inspired by her family’s passion for the land, Jennifer is excited to contribute to a new era. “I just love being a part of something that honours our family’s history - the blood, sweat and tears of my great grandfather, father and uncles of years past. It’s very validating to know that thousands of people are enjoying wines made from the fruit grown on our very own land. I am constantly thrilled by the positive reactions of guests as they enter our wineshop, inhaling the history of our beloved old building and feeling the energy of its past.
THE STORY BEHIND THE RED SHOE What began as a night of dancing until my red pumps started to pinch turned into a fun and carefree moment that inspired our red shoe label. My husband and I returned home to a bottle of Merlot. Playfully, he removed my shoes and stuffed the heel of one into the empty bottle… born by accident, there it was. The image of our own making spoke to us of our love of wine and our zest for life. The rest as they say is history,” Jennifer Molgat. ith temperatures starting to drop, and red and golden hued leaves making their debut, it’s time to think about going inward. Saying goodbye to summer can be eased by evenings spent curled up affront a fireplace while sipping on a velvety red wine. Or, by hosting a fall feast with a few close friends, glasses high as you cheers to a new season. It’s time to say adieu to the fresh and fruity whites such as Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc, and bonjour to the classic French red grape, Pinot Noir. Traditionally, Pinot Noir is best known for its juicy strawberry, raspberry and cherry flavours, with hints of spice, such as cinnamon, and other earthier notes. In the Okanagan Valley, Pinot Noir thrives in the more central to northern areas - thanks to the cooler climates, which results in a Pinot that stays true to those flavours. An

important element of a Pinot Noir is Terroir or elemental factors, which pick up the nuances of the land as well as the location. Because our senses have the ability to transport us to other lands, part of a wine’s charm lies in its sense of place. Drinking a Pinot Noir can be a smooth and seductive experience as the wine delicately dances on the palate compared to some of the other, bolder reds such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Barolo. Pinot is light in body and has low to medium tannins with high acidity making for an ultra sensual wine to drink. As one of the oldest grapes in the world and long standing as the most elegant choice in wine, it’s not surprising it is often the first choice for wine connoisseurs and novices alike. With some
Burgundian Pinot Noirs reaching unimaginable prices, its time to look at the Okanagan Valley where an abundance of outstanding quality and highly regarded vintages can be found. One of the best reasons to drink a Pinot Noir is that it is a food friendly wine. It pairs well with almost anything; however, I recommend avoiding dishes that are overly bold or spicy, which can dominate the ethereal flavours of the wine. Pairing a Pinot Noir with lamb is a classic combination that is particularly nice when the lamb is prepared with fresh herbs and vegetables. Other great options include Pinot Noir with ‘Coq au Vin’ or a rich and earthy dish like mushroom risotto. Ideally serve Pinot Noir between 15 - 18 degrees Celsius and preferably in a proper Pinot Noir glass that is tapered to direct the wine directly over the palate. Generally consume Pinots while still young, however on occasion some can age well for up to a few years. Whether matching a bottle of Pinot Noir to a new culinary delight or casually sipping on a glass after a long walk out in the brisk fall air or while giving a heartfelt toast with friends and family over Thanksgiving dinner, this season its time to fall in love with Pinot Noir. Lucille Chubey has completed her WSET Level 3 Certificate while studying in Florence with Master of Wine, Phillip Goodband. Fluent in both English and Spanish, she is passionately working to add Italian and French to that list. While her love of all things wine and travel, she often finds herself at peace in an old world vineyard; thankfully, she always happily returns home to Kelowna.

CedarCreek was one of British Columbia’s first eight wineries. In business for more than 30 years, they have been recognized several times on the world stage for their excellence.
A lot has happened since then. In the last three years, they have won several awards, including best red wine in Canada for their 2012 Platinum Block 2 Pinot Noir.

“People come here from all over the world to taste award-winning wine,” says Pouget. With nearly 300 wineries now in British Columbia, it’s easy to forget when times were tough. Back in the early 90’s when
“We’re proud of our accomplishments. We wouldn’t be receiving these awards if we weren’t making great wine. We are aging. And, thankfully aging is a good thing when it comes to wine,” Pouget smiles.
Benjamin Franklin said, “Wine makes daily living easier, less hurried, with fewer tensions and more tolerance.”
Important to note is that while CedarCreek is drawing in people from around the globe to taste their incredible vintages, locals and visitors to the area can also enjoy the many events offered on site. “Music, food, wine and art are key parts of our culture. It’s important to us to support those parts of life and give back to our community,” she says. The winery hosts a Telus Sunset Concert Series with notable performers such as Kim Mitchell, Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida with all proceeds donated to the Rotary Centre for the Arts. This summer CedarCreek is presenting King of the Grill cooking classes, The Last Word Dinner Series, a Vineyard Artist painting class and Sunset Yoga. After a day at the office, CedarCreek is the perfect place to spend an evening. “People come to a class and spend hours afterwards relaxing in our wine garden
lounge with comfy sofas and breathtaking views of lake and mountain.”
THAT’S THE LIFE. Whether you’re in the mood to sink into CedarCreek’s rose garden pavilion or wish to dine at the Vineyard Terrrace Restaurant, you’re in for a treat. If you’re interested in a sommelier-led seated tasting or want to learn more about the birthplace of the vines, make sure to book your winery tour. CedarCreek is a way of being, it is the notion that life is meant to be lived fully, and with ease. It is a destination to enjoy the very best of esteemed wines and music, food and art. And best of all it’s right here in your backyard.

As legend goes, Rembler Paul was one of the area’s pioneers, known as one of the first white man to explore both east and west sides of the Rockies. A strong, generous and confident character, he was a visionary and a family man who built a large tomb for his family in the early 1900s. His wife, Elizabeth was the first to be laid to rest in 1914, he joined her two years later. he crypt itself is approximately 15 ft. long, 9 ft. wide and 7 ft. high. Acquired by the City of Kelowna in 1989, Paul’s Tomb is just a short hike from the Urban Distilleries site. Through Knox Mountain Park, hikers can walk a well-maintained path to the site of Paul’s tomb and the spot on which Rembler Paul’s cabin once stood.
T
Mike Urban of Urban Distilleries is a bit of a pioneer himself. Connected deeply to his roots, yet also a visionary. His latest release, a limited edition gin, honours those characteristics, as well as the legend of Rembler Paul. Paul Tomb’s gin is a limited release and tribute to a well-known Kelowna landmark. “It was actually the very first gin I created when I opened the distillery. It’s been sitting for years now.” Back then, Urban set out to make a gin that appealed to the non-gin aficionados. “Crafting spirits is a bit like baking, it’s trial and error in the beginning. The first batch was fantastic albeit juniper forward with light citrus and floral undertones.” In other words, not quite what he intended. So Urban tweaked the measurements, silencing the juniper and enhancing the citrus and floral notes, and went to market with the revised version, which has become the adored Spirit Bear gin and put the legacy gin to sleep. “I was actually going to bring it out as a 10-year anniversary gin but I just couldn’t wait,” he says.

Paul’s Tomb is not only a name and location Kelownians can relate to; it is now also a fantastic new product available at Urban Distilleries. Paul’s Tomb was released at the beginning of July, “I guess we’ll see how it resonates with people. If it takes off, I’ll consider making it a regularly listed product.” Rembler Paul was to Knox Mountain as Mike Urban is to craft spirits. After many requests, he’s also appealing to the bourbon enthusiasts with a Canadian bourbon-style whiskey, coming soon to market. After seven years in the making, his first batch will be released in early 2017. “Bourbon is very well known in the US, our new Urban Burban is a corn-based spirit made with 100 per cent BC grown corn. It will be a nice, smooth bourbon whiskey with complex nuances. I have a hunch it’s going to be a hit.” Made with brand new, custom-made and charred American oak barrels, Urban’s Burban may just be the next legend in town. To taste the limited release Paul’s Tomb gin or to stock up on his other legendary products, visit Urban Distilleries onsite retail store or their tasting room today. egrand Fast Design Inc. has been in operation in Kelowna for the past 11 years. And while Nicole admits when she first arrived in the Okanagan the contemporary design landscape was limited, with her experience she was quickly able to bring this design style to clients and builders, empowered by the collective of incredible men and women with whom she connected. More than a decade later, her business does both residential and commercial design from concept to completion. Begrand Fast Design Inc. will review plans from builders, architects and work with them to infuse originality in the interiors. From the initial conception of floor plans to interior finishes, she and her team build on a look and feel specific to each client. “We do in-house drawings and 3D renderings. We advise on everything from millwork to feature areas. Essentially, we pretty much touch every inch of a space. Together with the builder we become part of the trusted team,” she says. That synchronicity from the beginning stages through to conclusion of a project is one part of who they are; but Begrand Fast is much more than merely a team of designers. They are a forward-thinking, independent firm that believes in engaging with their client and their surroundings to ultimately produce the best work. “I have always had a heightened sensitivity to surroundings for as long as I can remember. I’ve always lived with eyes wide open.” This openness she speaks of is an intuitive awareness she brings to each client, each space and each design. “Our role TOP NICOLE BEGRAND-FAST

This is what fuels the team at Begrand Fast. “I am very grateful to have found my team of strong creatives who are all very different, who joined me to support and grow a firm that sets itself apart. ow officially known as Terrace Mountain, long-time local hikers may be more familiar with what was once called Shorts’ Mountain. Not to be confused with Shorts Creek - the natural flowing beauty that is responsible for bringing waterfalls into Fintry – a coveted area feature. From Terrace Mountain, Shorts Creek flows through the hills, under Westside Road and beneath the bridge at the entrance of Fintry Provincial Park (FPP). While Fintry is known for its water features, Terrace is notorious for it magical views. The area and especially FPP beckons all outdoor enthusiasts. Notably, the area is most used for canoeing, cycling, fishing, swimming, boating and especially, hiking. At Mint we believe that nourishing the spirit is as beneficial as caring for the body, sometimes more so. And so it is no wonder when we are in need of rebooting our creative selves, we too submerse physical beings in the splendor of the natural world. John Muri said, “Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.” The Terrace Mountain Trail is not only a taste of nature’s peace, it is a beautiful adventure to the top of one of the tallest peaks on the Thompson Plateau. It traverses up an old forest service road, through a fire burn zone and past striking trees dressed in charred bark. Once you peak, we suggest you stop to take in the unparalleled view from the top. It is a place where you will forget about that which holds you back and be reminded of how much better life is when enjoyed. Let the winds blow freshness into your mind while you appreciate the wonder under foot.

Embracing all that
Kelowna has to Offer An Interview with Mayor Basran PHOTO BY SHARLA PIKE
INTERVIEWED BY JAMES APPLETON
B
orn and raised in Kelowna, Mayor Colin Basran read the newspaper from the time he was a young boy. Always interested in politics, his grandfather was influential in his life.
As it turns out, I have one of the best jobs in the world. I come to work everyday with a smile on my face and still, a little bit of disbelief that this is my reality.
With a degree in journalism from BCIT, he transitioned with ease from a TV news reporter to a City Councillor at large. Wanting to be a part of change and eager to share his enthusiasm for life, he went for it.
What is the biggest concern facing Kelowna?
Recently Mint sat down with the young, engaging Mayor Basran for a casual conversation about life in the Valley and in particular, in the mayor’s chair.
The Okanagan is one of the fastest growing areas in Canada right now. Our task is to welcome that growth while protecting the quality of life we have here. Our plan is to direct and encourage growth opportunities by capitalizing on town centres where amenities already exist. We want people to have excellent connectivity between town centres without depending on automobiles. We’ll achieve this by streamlining public services, continuing to invest in transit, as well as continuing to build active transportation corridors for walking and cycling.
What do you like most about being mayor?
What are the plans you see for the future?
Kelowna is a great city with a ton of spirit and natural beauty. I have been fortunate to have been a part of two councils over the last five years, which has taken Kelowna and moved it forward. As mayor, it is amazing to be a part of that change.
Our mantra is open for opportunity. We don’t have all the answers but are certainly willing to partner with individuals and organizations to enhance the quality of life here. There is a shift happening in Kelowna’s economy to be more diverse now than ever but there’s still a lot of room to grow.
“I was ready to start a family and call Kelowna home for the rest of my life. That said, I knew if I wanted to see change in my environment, I had to take an active role.”
You went from one term as councillor to mayor of Kelowna, what was one of the challenges you’ve faced? I had to battle hard in the election to prove myself. Criticism came in the form of a lack of experience. Thankfully I have had some really great mentors in my life, including the previous mayor who helped to guide me. When the opportunity to run arose, I knew I wanted to be mayor and had to go for it. Life’s too short.
80
MINT Kelowna
This is the first time Kelowna has had a mayor with young children. His outlook is refreshing and perhaps his optimism is just what the city needs. “I love seeing decisions come to life. Our city is really seeing forward momentum with people thinking more optimistically than ever before, with more young professionals moving home and a future positioned for expansive growth. I plan to stay in this chair as long as the residents of Kelowna want me as their mayor.”

A book review of Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney’s
THE NEST BY BRANDI PARNELL
I
n this issue of Mint, we are graced with some tender family and in particular, prenatal-centred editorial from celebrity contributor Jillian Harris to local yogi, Shauna Nyrose. This issue’s book review is all about family and specifically, the relationships amongst siblings. It is different from previous reviews in that it is a work of fiction, and a debut novel. The Nest, by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney, is a tale of the inner workings of the Plumb family, its drama and the dysfunctional dynamics. In fact, I’ve heard people describe the characters as disturbing. As for this reader, I find them pretty normal when it comes to kin; every family has its fair share of issues and the aftermath that ensures post family dinner. I believe our darker sides, or shadows if you will, are what make us even more relatable and more real. The Nest does a spectacular job of working in many major issues in humanity. From greed to addiction, ‘the nest’ is a reference to a joint trust fund, which brings to the forefront of a family many imbalances. And while it has been said good intentions are closely linked to a life spent in the underworld, these four siblings Melody, Beatrice, Jack and Leo hope to solve many of their self-inflicted problems with cash. The novel is well written, warm and humorous. Brought together by death, these family members must not only face one another’s weaknesses but also, old resentments and present-day truths. Our paths in life leave quite the trail and those in The Nest lead right back to the power of family, the possibilities of kinship, the innate desire to connect as well as lean on one another and if possible, run far away when life gets too messy. I have a feeling the world of fiction is just getting to know D’Aprix Sweeney and her spot-on ability to bring characters to life in the most humble of ways. Family ties are never really broken; they are a platform for our insecurities and a host to our triumphs. Our traditions formed families are ultimately what we crave and at times, what we wish to eradicate from our lives. This book is the perfect summer read, lakeside with a glass of pinot gris and a scratch pad. It is enjoyable and thought provoking. Enjoy!

knack for uncovering topics that hit bone, the Kelowna hometown boy, is known for challenging the status quo, for recognizing Canadian talent and for bringing to the masses societally sensitive topics. His latest undertaking, Ice Guardians, is a film that examines one of the most controversial and provocative positions in the history of sport; it is a journey into the lives and minds of those who perform what is undoubtedly the toughest job within the National Hockey League today, the enforcer. Ice Guardians gets straight to the heart of what drives a person to react in the face of adversity, what motivates one human to selflessly lay it all on-the-line for others and what impact the role of an enforcer, over a lifetime, has on one’s soul.

Regardless of the subject matter, Scorgie has a way of revealing the commonalities we share as humans. A proud Canadian, he remains humble and inquisitive. “When I go to work every day, I am reminded that I truly have my dream job. When you’re dealing with documentaries, the film becomes less about the stars and more about a collective effort to share the story.” Scorgie, creative hustler with brass passion, has worked on various projects with Brett Harvey; award winning director and cinematographer of BKS Crew Productions whose curiosity and brilliance has fueled his calling. “He’s a wizard and has absolutely crushed it this time. Ice Guardians may be our best work yet.” Their synergy is commanding. “This film isn’t about glorifying fighting. Whether you agree with it or not, these men have put their lives on the line, game after game. We want to honour their place in hockey history.” Ask any first line superstar and they’ll tell you they have nothing but respect for the team’s protector. “A fascinating insight we discovered in making this film is the amount of respect players have for the tough guy. They are the men who have been willing to adapt their style of play in order to make the team.”
“Hearty, fervent guys who will put their head through a wall to get two minutes of ice time. They are charismatic, passionate, tough as hell men who are willing to swallow their ego – to basically do whatever it takes - to get the job done.” The world broadcast of Ice Guardians premiers on Super Channel in October. “This was a controversial venture to undertake. Super Channel backed us from the beginning. Without them, this film would simply not exist.” From a star-studded Toronto event to the Okanagan launch with locals Scott Parker and Todd Fedoruk, Scorgie will be busy, fuelling up on connecting this fall. Not to mention he’s finishing up production on the highly anticipated feature documentaries Chasing Evel: The Life Of Robbie Knievel and Inmate# 1 The Rise of Danny Trejo. Driven to look past the odds, motivated by human behaviour, Score G Productions may change the landscape of how you look at people who are willing to sacrifice themselves for the greater good.
