BRANDI PARNELL “None are so old as those who have outlived enthusiasm,” Henry David Thoreau. In some respects, it seems as though it has been a long while since I wrote here on this page. And, I suppose in some ways it has. We’ve started a new calendar year and some of us at have completed another year around the sun. We have implemented new habits and published various creative projects. Through it all, our wisdom has germinated and our souls have grown. We, as Thorea said, have outlived the enthusiasm that comes with a start-up business and are still here, creating beautiful and inspiring works of art for you, our readers so that you will feel connected to your city and especially your people. This is a special issue because we look at people in their fields who too have outlived enthusiasm. They have worked a business plan to fruition and taken their concept to market. They have worked countless hours, researched hundreds of ways to be successful and wise to their respective crafts. May you be enthusiastic and hopeful. May spring bring you all things exciting and fresh. May you be inspired to grow within and by those with whom you keep company. And, may you keep coming back for more. xo

GET PROACTIVE WITH YOUR SKIN! WITH ANITA KAMILLA OF KELOWNA LASER SPA
STEP 1 Exfoliate to increase cell turnover: The skin cycle becomes longer as we age, causing dead skin cells to collect on the top layer of the epidermis and make the skin look dry and rough. The epidermis also thins as we get older. Exfoliation stimulates new epidermal cell growth, which helps smooth, thicken and strengthen the skin for a younger appearance.
STEP 2 Strengthen the dermal matrix of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid: To plump the skin and improve the appearance of fine lines, you must work from the inside out. Strengthen the dermis by using ingredients that stimulate the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.
STEP 3 Reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and discoloration:
professional treatments, like chemical peels, may actually cause hyperpigmentation to develop. It is critical to protect skin with broad-spectrum sunscreens that provide both UVA and UVB protection. Zinc oxide is currently the most effective sunscreen ingredient due to its ability to physically block UVA and UVB rays. For this reason, all AlumierMD sunscreens contain zinc oxide. To learn more about how to care for your skin, contact Kelowna Laser Spa today.
Treat sunspots, uneven skin tone and other discoloration with exfoliating treatments and products that contain melanininhibiting ingredients. Using these methods simultaneously increases your chance of success. Hydroquinone is a wellknown skin lightener that inhibits the production of melanin. There are also natural lightening and brightening agents such as emblica, licorice, oyster phoenix mushroom and kojic acid.
STEP 4 Protect with broad-spectrum sunscreen: Sun exposure damages DNA and skin cells over time, reducing the skin’s natural ability to repair itself and negating positive results from skin care. Sun exposure after certain 12

QUALITY + VALUE = Self (& Everyone Else) Love WITH BEAUTY EXPERT
Bee (Brandi) Knezevich of EYES ON YOU LASH & HAIR
Oftentimes people ask me how they can achieve beautiful lashes without spending a fortune. That was the question I asked myself the first time I had my mine done – a question that has become my mantra. When I committed to the professional lash industry some years ago, the answer to that question, became the foundation for my business. It was and still is a commitment to master my craft with many hours of hard work, trials and training. In this industry I’ve found that quality and value is by far the real deal when it comes to self-beautification. In fact, I pride myself on enhancing eyes you can be proud to show the world; eyes that don’t look fake or leave you feeling self-conscious. Instead, I create a feeling of sexy confidence you notice every time you look in the mirror. Or each time you receive a compliment from your man. Or a man who COULD be your man. Or anyone you make eye contact with. From conversations with industry experts like Hilaree Brand to workshops and seminars at lash conventions all over North America I realized the best and most beautiful esthetic treatments are created in the details. And so with calibrated tools and skillful techniques, with insider tips and ‘knowhow’ from the very best in the industry, I have been able to refine my product and offer my clients the most delicious, eyelash art – including dramatic eyes for day-to-day wear and also big events.
Along with lashes, Eyes On You is pleased to offer full hair extensions as well as total body waxing and cosmetic makeup services. Every day I wake up with one mission in mind, to be better than I was yesterday. It would be my pleasure to help you accentuate your most beautiful self. I promise, we’ll make sure that you have everyone’s has their Eyes on You!

At just 12 years old, she was diagnosed with a rare obsessive-compulsive disorder called Trichotilomania, an uncontrollable urge to pull out ones own hair. At a pivotal time in her life, she battled with OCD for nearly two years, constantly believing she would one-day triumph over the disorder.
VOGUEPEARL technique Megan developed six years ago, guaranteeing the extensions will not cause any damage whatsoever to existing hair. And, her new Kelowna salon boasts five stations including a totally cute ‘colour bar,’ where they offer colours in coordination with your full extension or hair loss replacement services.
Unfortunately the rise did not happen over night. Eventually, she was forced to drop out of high school at the age of 16 due to excessive bullying. It wasn’t until she pulled back and regained her sense of peace that began to slowly regrow her hair and eventually discovered hair extensions – a revelation that changed the way she felt about herself and ultimately changed the direction of her life.
Whether you want more hair or suffer from serious hair and scalp disorders such as alopecia or trichotillomania, both of which cause hair loss, The Extensionist can help.
Knowing she had uncovered a knowing that she had to share with the world, in 2013 Megan travelled to Europe to become a Master Extension Trainer and learn Trichology/Hair Replacement studies. Upon her graduation, Megan became the very first Canadian to have credentials as a specialty hair extension trainer and hair replacement specialist, developing her own unique installation technique. Her latest venture, a new salon in downtown Kelowna, is an experience fit for a queen and marks her third full-service salon, with one in Calgary and the other in Edmonton. Since then she has opened three salons as well as the academy and in 2016 was shortlisted for the 2016 Alberta Business Awards of Distinction for Woman Entrepreneur of Distinction and Young Entrepreneurs of Distinction. I love being able to hire local talent and help the women feel their best. “Knowing we’ve changed lives is the best feeling.” “One day I hope The Extensionist will have locations in every major city across Canada,” Ledarney says. “My dream is to see best practices and proper training for all extensionists because every woman deserves to feel her best.” The Extensionist 540 Bernard Ave. | 236.420.4440 theextensionist.ca | kelowna@theextensionist.ca

Move over boring...there’s a new business in town. Attire that is. Office wear doesn't have to be stuffy or drab. In fact, you can infuse the same creative bent into your wardrobe that you do your role at the office. This issue’s 9 to 5 fashion is inspired by local boss babes. So go ahead and promote yourself to in-house fashionista. Confidence is key, and of course accessories always help.

THE HIGH LIFE IS FOUND THROUGH WELL-BEING BY NIKKI HUNTER
There is something really special about that moment when we purchase a luxury beauty product to support our self care or to adorn our body. The moment when we give ourselves permission to take care of our self is so fulfilling as we celebrate our commitment to self care everyday. hat about the other side of that? The part where we finally take the time to do some self care, do some personal care shopping and it becomes stressful? Too many choices, toxic ingredients, cancer, animal cruelty, environmental impact, and throw false claims and aggressive sales people into the mix… then you start to think, what about all the products we have at home that we don’t like, have stashed under the sink that we didn’t follow through with? Then the shame spiral begins, frustrations mount, and we settle for something that is just good enough (or is it?). We have all spent a bunch of money on products because of a promise of luxury and happiness to discover that it has left us feeling indifferent or even unsatisfied.

FINDING SATISFACTION HAD BECOME AMBIGUOUS These concerns opened the door to clean beauty, and as it has become more available, we are learning that the business people who are bringing it to us have a very different approach and are removed from a place in industry. These professionals are redefining the industry by choosing to offer safe, healthy, ethical and sustainable brands along with expertise to support you in your journey. So many of them, like myself, are refugees from the ordinary beauty industry. We spent that part of our careers learning what we could be doing better, how we could create a safer space, safer products and how to become educators and service providers rather than sales people.

THE HIGH LIFE IS FOUND THROUGH WELL-BEING
Derived from the Hindi word for “intuitive” – Sahajan brings you the evidence to follow your intuition and chose clean beauty.
CORPA FLORA Corpa Flora believes in a more global approach where we can do more with less. Beauty reduced to its most simple and natural perfection without a collection of products aimed at individual skin types or for each skin imperfection. Products that care for the skin and the environment.
MAD HIPPIE It used to be that you had two choices when it came to skin care: Choose a traditional brand with sophisticated anti-aging actives, but run the risk of exposing your body to harmful synthetic additives, or choose a natural skin care line that while safe, did little more than hydrate the skin.Well, now there’s another choice….
Discovering our new definition of luxury and affluence has much less to do with excess than it does with personal fulfillment, growth and gratitude. Our measure of expensive has transcended from monetary currency to desire to preserve our precious planetary resources and for feelings of connection to the world around us. “How much does it cost?” Opens up a whole new conversation that has much less to do with money. “Can I afford this?” is asking so much more than how much is in our bank account. Indulgence in the comforts of beauty products can feel truly luxurious when the brands have ensured every aspect of our wealth through health and well-being. There is so much more delight discovered when we know that the care of every human, animal, community and of course, our precious home are part of our daily ritual. Self care is an art that requires practice and education. With clean beauty professionals here to facilitate, the luxury is yours. Mind, body and spirit.

JUST A GAL AND HER SHOES BY BRANDI PARNELL PHOTOS ASHLEY GODIN PHOTOGRAPHY
Roughly three years ago, on a back packing trip through Europe, something magical happened. In the heart of Barcelona, Spain, Cinderella found her shoe, or in this case, Lisa Broesky found many shoes. ight away, she was swept off her feet, “I’ve always had a love of shoes. From the time I was a little girl, they fascinated me; they are a fashion focal point for me, not an after thought. They command my attention, I have a room full of them,” she laughs.
R
Her husband and business partner, David, chimes in, “Yes, she said room!” Their banter is light-hearted. They complement one another well. Lisa is the fashionista, David is the business mind and together they are the owners of Kelowna’s newest shoe boutqiue, galibelle. galibelle is a Brazilian brand, still in its infancy. They create beautiful, yet comfortable, functional and wellmade shoes. And while most people know Brazilian made shoes are some of the best in the world, many not know that galibelle is a unique, interchangeable shoe system. The way it works is you buy a basic shoe bottom (heel, flat, wedge etc.) and accessorize the top with separate, different straps according to your taste or occasion. Each bottom has a line of coordinating straps which align with the attaching configuration of snaps. “galibelle is changing the way you look at shoes,” says Lisa. “Made by creative, edgy designers, our soles and straps are full of colours, and exclusive prime materials. galibelle is not only a brilliant idea, but also fashionable, comfortable and stylish.” This concept not only made for easier packing when David and Lisa flew home to Canada, it made for an incredible business. Their first store was in Edmonton, Kelowna is their second. “It just made sense,” said David. “Not only did my shoe-loving wife fall in love with their unique look, she 24

loved the concept so much, she wanted to buy them in every colour.” She did. And now, you can too. “We have people coming into the store, thrilled to be able to buy Brazilian made shoes, which really are superior in many ways,” says David. “The brand has been around since 2007 and is just blowing up world wide, from Paris to Miami and Tahiti.” Best of all, these shoes are amazing for travelling because you only have to pack the straps. Perfect for bridesmaids, and essentially a custom fit for any foot, from narrow to really wide. “As a girl who loves shoes, there’s no better feeling than finding your perfect, fashionable fit,” she says. “Anybody that knows me knows this is my dream come true, a fairy tale really. Marilyn Munroe said, “Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world.” galibelle is world-conquering shoes specially fit for every foot, every woman, every season (yes they have boots as well as ankle boots) for every style. “I’ve always wanted to be in a boutique space, I love people. I love seeing beautiful, statement pieces and I love sharing my passion,” says Lisa. To keep your hair looking like you just walked out of the salon, use these important tips from the experts:
1
Use salon quality shampoo, conditioner and styling aids recommended to you by your stylist. He or she knows your hair type and its speciďŹ c needs better than anyone.
2
For coloured hair, shampoo only 2-3 times a week with the colour safe products recommended by your stylist. This is the best way to preserve the life of your colour.
3 4 5 6 7
Use dry shampoos to keep oils at bay between washings. Use a heat protectant and/or argan oil to protect your hair when heat styling. Use recommended hair treatments every week for strong and healthy hair. Keep up with regular trims (every 6-8 weeks) to prevent split ends. Rinse your hair in cold water to seal the cuticle, protect your colour and add shine.

ANTI-AGING IN YOUR 30’s, 40’s, & 50’s BY DR. CHELSEA GRONICK, ND
If you’ve managed to keep things afloat through your 30’s, you’ll be eager to enter your fabulous 40’s. Yet, this is often when people don’t feel right in their bodies, although they’re not sure why. Jump-start your metabolism, time your carbs, avoid mixing high sugar/starch foods with high fat foods and consider implementing a secret weight loss weapon to feel amazing. Check out past issues for the full story...
In our 50’s, the dreaded menopause and andropause make their appearance. But that doesn’t mean you can’t be proactive. Here are some tips for managing these hormonal changes and making the best of your 50’s and beyond!
1. CONSIDER BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT, AKA BHRT BHRT aims to replace levels of hormones that the body no longer being makes so we can age at a slower rate and live a better quality of life. Other reasons to use BHRT include optimizing hormone balance, relieving menopause symptoms, regaining energy and avoiding chronic illnesses associated with aging. Bioidentical hormones act in the body like the hormones we produce and can include estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and DHEA. Synthetic hormones such as Premarin, Medroxyprogesterone acetate and birth control pills do not look like the hormones our bodies naturally produce and have very different, and sometimes harmful effects in the body. The best BHRT prescriptions are often prepared by specialized compounding pharmacies, as this allows for a complete customization of the dose and delivery method.
2. STAY ACTIVE Continuing to focus on building lean muscle mass will help keep you lean, fit and mobile while preventing osteoporosis. Studies have shown the more lean muscle mass we have, the greater our longevity. If your activity levels have slowed down due to achy joints, arthritis, pain or injuries, consider ways to regenerate your connective tissues so that you can get back to doing the things you love most.
28
MINT Kelowna
Prolotherapy is a regenerative injection therapy that can help repair and regenerate damaged tendons, ligaments and joints that have become arthritic, preventing the need for medications and surgeries. In fact, it can be your secret weapon to preventing the aging process from slowing you down!
3. SHIFT YOUR DIET TO MATCH YOUR METABOLISM A high protein, low starch, moderate to low fat, high fiber diet is the best plan for looking and feeling younger than your age. It also prevents extra weight gain.
4. FOCUS ON RAISING YOUR GROWTH HORMONE Growth hormone is truly our fountain of youth and anti-aging hormone, and its decline begins as early as in our 30’s. Higher levels of GH supports lean muscle mass, less fat mass, and better bone density, which basically keeps us young from the inside out. While GH replacement is still highly controversial, there are several ways to raise your GH levels naturally.
HERE THEY ARE: •
Eliminate sugar, refined carbs and eat more protein. Insulin spikes from high blood sugar lowers GH.
•
Sleep more. We make GH while we sleep.
•
De-stress by whatever means you find rejuvenating. Stress and high cortisol levels lower GH.
•
Exercise differently. HIIT is the #1 way to raise GH.
•
Lose belly fat. Excess weight suppresses GH.
•
Avoid alcohol. Alcohol suppresses GH.
•
Supplement smartly. Nutrients such as melatonin, GABA, arginine and blends like Secretropin have been show to raise GH.
The 50’s are a critical time to make a strong effort to slow and even reverse the aging process. Do it before the body breaks down to the point where you’ve lost the ability to rebuild, regenerate and repair. Don’t wait until retirement to start living an anti-aging and longevity focused lifestyle. The sooner your start, the better shape your body, mind and metabolism will be for years to come.

“There is an art and a science to micro-pigmentation that can take years to refine,” she says. eople choose micro-pigmentation for a variety of reasons. When women come to PURE, they won’t see magazines showcasing supermodels or flawless photos. “I believe we are all beautiful. It’s why I chose this career; I wanted to help women find their own beauty. Not necessarily the look on trend in magazines either. It’s my job to help women discover the right look for them that will withstand time; that complements their features and their personality.” PURE Esthetics offers a full menu of esthetics including facials, manicures, pedicures, brow arching, lash and brow tinting, waxing and makeup application, as well as specialized services such as oncology esthetics, and of course, micro-blading and micro-pigmentation. Donna’s genuine kindness is innate and likely what led her to obtain her Oncology Esthetics Certification. “I am certified to safely provide esthetics services for those who have or are undergoing cancer treatment. Many people are unaware that there can be contraindications to treating women who, for example,

My clients can rest assured knowing they’ll be treated with the utmost care and experience.” Each treatment Donna provides is done with purpose. “I want every client to feel confident in my care. I want her to feel happier, more beautiful and more relaxed when she leaves than when she came in.” “We are constantly bombarded with what society tells us we should look like. I struggle with that a bit: I believe it’s about staying true to who you are. I love empowering a person to feel happy in their skin, whether it’s working together on a restorative skin care regimen, shaping someone’s eyebrows to help give them a lift, providing micro-pigmentation or microblading for someone who’s lost their own eyebrows or offering makeup advice on products that can be beneficial to their skin,” says Donna. “Making a positive change to someone’s day is such a rewarding experience.” PURE Esthetics & Micro-Pigmentation #102 – 532 Leon Ave, Kelowna 250.712.0927 | By Appointment Only pure@uniserve.com | pureestheticskelowna.ca

Defy Gravity and Aging BY DR. PRAVEN CHETTY, MD, CCFP, DPD, DAAAM
Coco Chanel said, “Nature gives you the face you have at twenty; it is up to you to merit the face you have at fifty.” With people living far longer than ever before, we are fortunate to be able to experience the joys of life longer. And yet, we all want to do so gracefully, with merit. The beauty of cosmetic medicine lies in the art of enhancing the natural attributes of each person to represent the best possible version of themselves, at that given point in time. On a daily basis, I see men and women who report looking and feeling less than their younger selves. My job and our shared goal is to artfully help them to feel better in their skin, to defy gravity and age with grace for natural looking results. Of course, fresh air (we live in the beautiful Okanagan!) and a good night’s sleep are crucial to looking our best. So too is healthy eating and as little stress as possible. But aside from the obvious, beauty’s worse enemy is gravity and the art of lifting, relaxing and reflating are some of the important tools used for holistic rejuvenation at Cerulean Medical Institute. Thankfully, we live in an era of modern medicine where we can use highly safe and effective anti-aging products such as Botox ®, Juvederm ®, Belkyra ™ to name a few. In the pursuit of happiness and overall contentment, the majority of us would like to look and feel fantastic, both physically and mentally. The art of beautification is to correct the correctable and enhance our natural attributes. Visit www.ceruleanmedical.com to learn more about our customized anti-aging treatments, or call 778.760.5050 to schedule an appointment today.
HERE ARE A FEW BENEFITS TO ANTI-AGING TREATMENTS: Reversing natural aging can improve confidence. Whether it is a fresh hairstyle or a new outfit, putting forth our best appearance feels great. People may respond to you differently. Looking less tired and more refreshed can affect the way in which people treat you. Improved health? Feeling great can provide the boost in self-esteem to be more socially active. In fact, you may even consider going on a date or applying for a new job. Psychologically as well as physically, we give out more and tend to attract more positivity when we feel good about our outward appearance.

LABOUR OF LOVE Raw, Vegan, Gluten and Dairy Free Goodness BY BRANDI PARNELL PHOTOS SHARLA PIKE
Sometimes there is a microcosmic shift in the universe. Sometimes one door opens to another. Sometimes we find ourselves in situations that springboard the trajectory of our lives. In Kathleen Treadgold’s case, owner at Glow Juicery Kelowna, it was all of these things. 36

My path towards wellness began approximately 19 years ago,” she says. “I had become suddenly ill and was continually sick, on constant antibiotics. Eventually I had had enough and began to take matters into my own hands.” Determined to feel better, Kathleen found a natural healing center, which rebuilt her immune system and brought her back to health. However, it wasn’t until years later that she cared for loved ones with critical cancer that she started looking into the way nutrition and our mind

We can heal or make ourselves sick by the food we eat and the thoughts in our minds.” That’s when Kathleen decided to be a vessel of change towards wellness and opened Glow Juicery Kelowna. “It has been so much work, but such a rewarding, amazing journey.” Glow Juicery creates fresh cold-pressed juices, along with superfood smoothies and delicious vegan raw food options. Their unique and delicious menu was designed as a convenient way to nourish your body, increase energy and improve overall well-being. The food at Glow Juicery is thoughtfully prepared with love, from local farmers who care about the earth and its ecosystems. Raw food takes a lot of time to prepare and the team at Glow begin working before the sun comes up. “We have many customers who come in every single day. Some for a juice, some for raw food; others for a delicious, healthy dessert or to pick up their cleanse package. Our customers share with us how they notice the differences in how great they feel. We have amazing customers. They are always so lovely and appreciative of what we stand for.”
“At Glow, we welcome everyone! We have an educated team of mostly nutritionists with a goal to provide an incredible experience, inspire and support them in their journey to living better. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about balance and listening to what your body needs.” “Glow Juicery is my true passion and purpose. I could not be successful without the efforts of my amazing team and the encouragement from our incredible community. Kelowna is a beautiful and supportive place to live. I feel very blessed.” This spring, Kathleen will open her second location, downtown in the new Okanagan Centre for Innovation on Doyle and Ellis. She excited to be a part of the downtown community and connect with the forward thinking individuals who care about health and wellness - perfect synergy. “Eventually I would like to have a foundation to provide free juice to cancer patients. I want people in treatment to have access to true wellness, including the patient’s family, their doctors and support team.” Integrity, passion and love, squeezed into every glass and each product made at Glow. ave you ever remarked after seeing a person who looked naturally beautiful? Someone who radiated an elegance that appeared effortless? It’s the look of someone who has spent time in nature; one who is rested, well from the inside out; beautiful.
H
Classic European-looking beauty can be naturally achieved with holistic treatments available at The De Pieri Clinic. In fact, various treatments used at the clinic are of European decent. Their forward-thinking approach to holistic aging makes Dr. De Pieri and his staff a group to watch in 2017. Mesotherapy is a non-surgical, cosmetic medicine treatment that injects pharmaceutical and homeopathic medications, plant extracts, vitamins, and other ingredients into the skin to enhance one’s own natural beauty. “Most people are only familiar with one branch of mesotherapy, but there are many,” says Dr. De Pieri, “meso has many different applications one of which restores hydration, improves tired and thinning skin. Instead of injecting just fillers, mesotherapy injects vitamins, minerals and proteins into the skin to maintain its health. The result is a more vibrant, natural look.” Anti-aging falls under the umbrella of functional medicine, which attempts to assess why bodily systems are out of balance. Not far from Ayurveda and ancient Chinese Medicinal practices, functional medicine is a proactive approach to health that accounts for all parts of a body and how it works together. “Aging is a natural process. And, these days we are living longer, which means our bodies experience declining hormones and other normal, age related symptoms. My goal is to help my patients look and feel their best; through sleep, diet, meditation, stress reductions and hormones
supplementation. After an extensive fellowship at The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine where I studied to learn about regaining balance from within, I approach aging from the inside out.” Dr. De Pieri believes that properly balanced hormones not only allow a person to age gracefully, but to live fully as they grow older. “Aging doesn’t have to be painful. It doesn’t have to look unpleasing.” The De Pieri Clinic is known for its natural approach to aesthetics and patient care from dramatic CO2 resurfacing to collagen stimulating treatments. His technique is comprised of many years of education having perfected his craft with Canada’s leading aesthetic doctors. Among his vast repertoire of techniques, one of his patients’ favorites is the minimally-invasive cannula technique, which incorporates flawless results with a comfortable experience. The De Pieri Clinic stays abreast of the latest science in anti-aging, and stands behind the proven, quality treatments that make a difference. Dr. De Pieri’s Italian background and extra training in European anti-aging methods lends to his delicate approach leaving his patients feeling 100 per cent confident in their decisions. “Although we have a large population of women in their 40’s, we are starting to treat more and more men and younger women,” he says. It seems word is spreading of Dr. De Pieri’s conservative approach, his gentle way of being and his draw to natural, European inspired beauty. KRISTI’S APPROACH HAS ALWAYS BEEN:
Smart. Simple. Success. Because the majority of people aren’t experienced in how to manage their money or what options are available to them, they need expert help - advice on best options; which is why Kristi gets to know every one of her clients to assess what’s best for them, their families and their financial futures.
risti Ames grew up speaking finance. In fact, her family dinner discussions centered around delicious food and funds. Her mom, also a certified financial planner, valued the education of wealth management, investing, tax savings, personal insurance and planning for the future. And so, when it came to finances, Kristi was raised with a healthy respect for communicating about taking the necessary steps to ensure a sound financial landscape.
K
“I grew up in Kelowna, but received my Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Alberta. It wasn’t until I was on my own, starting my career in Calgary, that I realized not everyone knew how to manage his or her money, which was as common a topic in my home as using our manners; it was second nature, how we communicated.” And yet, the more people she meets, the more she realizes many people really don’t have any idea how to be in control of their own personal wealth. “When my mom retired in 2015, I returned home to Kelowna and took over her portfolio of clients. It’s been an incredible opportunity,” she says. The natural transition from mother to daughter has been well received and the financial values are continuous. For me, money is personal. It is about connecting, face-to-face. It’s about how we live and better yet, how we want to live. It’s been about the dreams we all have, my experience in the industry and the way I communicate with my clients.”
A common misunderstanding in the investment world is with Tax-Free Savings Accounts. They have been named in a way that promotes them as a savings account and with interests rates at an alltime low; investors are not reaping the benefits of this tax efficient account. “I encourage my clients to think of TFSA’s as an investment account to maximize returns and minimize taxes for their future. The trouble is, without an investment advisor, most people just don’t know.” Independent investment advisors, work independently of the big banks, which means their advice is unbiased. They can customize any product, plan or approach. So whether it is our first look at your finances or a second look as you approach a new phase in your life, Kristi and her team at Capri Wealth Management are ready to meet, review and advise on your unique situation. “Money still seems to be a taboo topic in our society. It’s not spoken about openly, I want to change the way we speak about our finances,” she says. “Just don’t wait. Everyone wishes they had started planning sooner.” Kristi Ames is someone to watch in 2017 because she truly wants to help her clients live a better life. From east to west coast and residential to corporate.
His love for woodworking began at a young age. The first piece he made for his mom, a oneof-a-kind make up table. From there, he worked his way through various roles from carpenter to business owner. Eternal Timber works with our local arborists as well as Vancouver Urban Timberworks to recycle felled BC trees. “We focus our salvaging efforts on all domestically grown, local woods,” says Shawn. Carlee, the analytical thinker who takes care of logistics says, “I try to just let Shawn work. He is best when he’s creating, when it’s just him and his vision. Sue Van Rycke SHEDDING LIGHT ON THE 2017 GRAND TOMMIE AWARD WINNING HO ME PHOTOS SHARLA PIKE

ue Van Rycke is one of the owners of Lights ON in Kelowna. She has a good eye for what ‘works’ when it comes to selecting great lighting for a unique home. In many ways, lighting choices can set the mood for a room or an entire home.
S
When customers Kathleen and her architecthusband Eric designed their new lakeshore home, they knew lighting was going to be a key ingredient. With sweeping views of Lake Okanagan and sliding glass panels that could open up the entire lakeside of the home to the summer breezes, it was a real challenge to pick lighting that would present just the right impact in this one-of-a-kind modern home that clung to the rocky cliff side. Kathleen turned to Lights ON...Banks and teamed up with Sue to help her select just the right look. Choosing just the right look can be a challenging task. Thankfully, in Kathleen’s soon-to-be Grand Tommie, ‘Home of the Year,’ award-winner in Kelowna, the lighting worked amazingly well.
outcome. It is a delicate task, sometimes with bold choices, sometimes with understated ones – just enough to pause your breath for a moment, but not so much that you grow tired of the look. In the end, the goal is always, ‘Simply Stunning,’ – an enduring look that never tires and is always gently impressing – you think to yourself, “good choice… no, great choice.”
Having a minimalist look and somewhat stark feel, each decorative element was critical. In fact, those key design elements defined the home - every colour stood out, every sculpture made a statement, each painting expressed intense feeling. So the lighting, itself, became art.
Located at 427 Banks Road in Kelowna, the showroom is chic. More like a boutique than a traditional lighting store, the staff is highly skilled in the art of helping clients choose their lighting, from utility fixtures to high-end designer styles – of which they have many.
Sue’s selection began with three hand-made iron fixtures from Hubbardton-Forge in Vermont. The main entry piece cascaded a dozen feet down from a custom ceiling canopy and filled the center staircase space between the upper and lower floors. The second fixture hangs in the ‘quiet’ room, off the living room – a simple oversized orb pendant by Hubbardton that complimented original artworks displayed on the walls.
The choice of many of the Okanagan’s top builders and interior designers, Sue and her business partner Tim Karila, along with sales specialists Jordan and Kim, just take the time to do every project right. The list of satisfied customers is lengthy as Sue and Tim have been the ‘go-to’ lighting specialists in the Okanagan for the past 17 years.
Almost-invisible cables suspend the third and most impactful piece over the custom dining room table, almost like birds in flight. More accessory lighting from Hubbardton-Forge and other manufacturers were located around the home and on the exterior to complete the overall look. Lights On specializes in what they call, ‘Simply Stunning.’ It is their way of expressing the final
Cost estimating? Sue suggests 1% of the value of the home. This allows enough wiggle room for a very good general lighting plan and for those special impact pieces to set the expression. Outland Design Landscape Architect is an Okanagan-based landscape architecture firm dedicated to helping clients find their peace, freshness and energy, while letting go of their cares. They are a full service collective of inspired beings whose medium is nature. They seek collaboration and ecological solutions to enrich the environment for people and wildlife through the use of natural materials, locally sourced products and a palette of native plants. Drawing from local ecology, regional inspiration and each individual they meet, they create bespoke landscapes. Whether the project is navigating the pathways between a tasting room and a restaurant or along footpaths that wind around learning environments - they seek to plan fresh air infused, comfortable, and functional outdoor spaces. “We are a comprehensive landscape architecture firm with a myriad of services and people to draw from,” says Fiona Barton, owner since 2010. “I absolutely love doing the work that we do. We are collaborative team that all depend on one another.” This month, Fiona will be a guest speaker at the 2017 BCSLA Annual Conference at The Delta Okanagan Grand Resort, a conference for landscape architects. Along with her colleagues, Dr. Beverlie Dietze and Dr. Lynn Zettl, she will address how our mental health can be enhanced by our surroundings and in particular, how learning landscapes makes resilient humans in a lecture on ‘Playing it Forward’. “Our environment plays a large role in our well being,” she says, “From forest bathing to connecting with other life forms, we all seek connection with nature.” The reality of living in the Okanagan is that you get to experience the outdoors all year long. You can ski in the afternoon and dine and entertain outdoors in the evening. You can spend days on the lake, hiking a trail or sleeping outdoors.
Whether you’re looking out at the lake or up at the mountains, where you’re in the city or next to Knox Park the area is a four season, outdoor playground. “Don’t visualize your yard as an afterthought, addon; instead think of it as an outdoor room essential to life in the Okanagan. We bridge the gap between indoor life and nature. In fact, we aim to make them seamless,” she says. This year trends remain focused on low maintenance, ornamental grasses harmonious with natural landscapes; purple tones set against grasslands, lavender against Okanagan suede. “We work with homeowners to create spaces that complement their lifestyle, personality and décor.” There’s nothing better than feeling as though home and patio, office and yard, vineyard and picnic area are seamless.” “I do what I do because I really enjoy meeting new people, love finding out what they wish to achieve with their landscape design and uncovering their vision. It is a joy to translate their thoughts onto paper in a graphic manner and watch as the drawings come to life.” And that’s precisely why Outland Designs is one of our cover stories, a natural fit for people to watch in 2017. “Everything we do must be done right the first time,” says Rebecca. “Brendan is very skilled and approaches each job with a keen eye and an open mind. If there is a better way to come at a job, he’ll find it.” Known for his quality workmanship and his meticulous skill, set Brendan worked his way through the trades and into the position of foreman at other larger, high-end companies. “Eventually I knew that in order to continue to grow and develop, I needed to make the move and open my own company. Rebecca has been integral in that transition,” he says. “Renovations are our main focus, and adding value to homes is what we do best,” she says. But perhaps she’s being modest. There are many things they do exceptionally well, especially dealing with their clients. “Brendan and I always go to our initial client meeting together. We feel it’s important to see all sides to a job, to be able to sense what our clients’ goals are for the project and how we can bring to life their domestic needs. We want to know what inspires them, what will help them function optimally. What are their aspirations, their visions? What takes them away from home and what brings them back.” A young family themselves, they stay inspired by thinking of ways to do things differently, better. “We truly want to bring a softer touch to general contracting. We want to collaborate with families to create the ideal outcome,” says Rebecca. “Every project we touch is really unique and one spring boards to the next. With each new job, we gain a new level of respect, more referrals and more experience that we carry forward,” says Brendan. “I work closely with very talented
designers. Then my job is to execute with precision - it’s all about details.” From crown mouldings to flooring, from kitchens to additions, Brendan works with subtrades and contractors, knowing exactly what each person is responsible for. He oversees the project management, their time and the required materials. “It’s my job to ensure all aspects of the job are complete, that the home is returned to perfect organization and that the homeowners have everything just the way they want.” “Our work speaks for itself,” says Rebecca. “We couldn’t be happier with the feedback we’ve received, that’s why we do what we do.” Brendan and Rebecca Fox are trustworthy, experienced and family orientated people, which makes Fox Developments a business to watch for in 2017. Driven to succeed, intuitive and highly communicative, each project is delivered with clear communication and fulfilled with precision. “We share all details of the job with our clients to help put them at ease. Bread THE RISE OF
BY BRANDI PARNELL
“All sorrows are less with bread.” MIGUEL DE CERVANTES SAAVEDRA 54

For centuries, bread has been more than a staple food. It has fed many a family, been a coveted recipe passed on from one generation to the next; its unique taste has differed by country; it has divided dieters from the mainstream and has notoriously been referred to as one of the greatest comfort foods ever. But like any other masterpiece, there is an art to making bread, just as distinguishable as its accompaniment. In fact, bread – not just for sandwiches – is a weakness for many. From the way it is made, which many bakers consider meditative, to the way its aroma fills a kitchen. From the softness of its innards to the sometimes-tough exterior, bread is what many long for, often irresistible it can transport you back in a time and is arguably one of the most loved foods known to man. With growing trends in healthful breads due to glutenfree demands and lifestyle choices such as veganism, bread makers have been challenged to recreate an old favourite, to take a seeming simple product and overhaul its formulation. These days artisan bread has upped the expectations on what dinner guests can drag through freshly churned butters and old world olive oils mixed with gourmet balsamic vinaigrettes. Small batch bakeries and their craft breads have redesigned salad’s sidekick; so much so in fact, breads made by artisans are clearly marked with care, expertise and quality baked right into the loaf. And when it comes to flavour, carefully crafted breads really do yield more delicious loaves. Perhaps it is because the makers of crafts breads tend to select better ingredients, but it is also the fermentation process, which is longer than commercially baked breads. Artisan bread can take up to 24 hours to rise, permitting the enzymes to react naturally with the various flours which produces a more robust taste and texture.
In fact, if you’ve ever heard of someone who cannot tolerate today’s convenient, commercial bread, but easily digests bread made by his or her grandmother, it is because a slow fermentation process actually makes bread easier to digest. Concerned about gluten or require an egg-free option? Today there are many specialty bakeshops willing to accommodate; however more often than not, glutenfree bakeries remain independent due to crosscontamination issues. Regardless of your dietary needs, here are a few things to consider when choosing your next loaf: 1. THE CRUST. The best bread has a firm, flaky and colourful exterior, which helps to lock in the baked in goodness. 2. BIG BUBBLES. Bubbles indicate a loaf was worked tenderly. Not overly manipulated or kneaded. 3. TASTE. A mildly sour flavour mixed with a hint of sweetness indicates a solid fermentation process and a marinated yeasty finish. Eat it alongside a glass of Merlot, t with a hot bowl of soup or topped with locally made cheese. Fill two pieces with Italian meats and a hearty condiment. Eat it cold, serve it warm, toast it or cover it. However you slice it, bread is an art form not lost by many.

Rose´ LA VIE EN
BY LUCILLE CHUBEY
L
iving in the Okanagan is as easy as sipping on a glass of chilled wine on a hot afternoon. With easy access to the lake, fantastic weather and many impressive wineries what’s not to love? Whether it’s throwing a casual summer BBQ or hosting an elegant five-course dinner, there is never a lack of great Okanagan wines to choose from. This summer throw on a pair of rosecolored sunglasses and experience la vie en rosé. The Okanagan is synonymous with fresh and fruity, high acidity wines - especially favourable qualities to have when drinking rosé. Gone are the days when pink wine equated over-the-top sweetness in a glass. Today a rosé wine is refreshing on the palate. It is a more sophisticated and well-balanced profile of crisp, fresh fruit with notes of muddled strawberries and a touch of herbaceousness. Blush wines emanate finesse with its many hues of colour. From salmon pink and coral to cherry red, a rosé wine adds a flash of color and replaces the expected whites and reds. For bubbly lovers there is also the option of popping a sparkling rosé as a tasteful choice for any summertime celebration and a more economically friendly one when comparing to traditional Champagne. There are several ways rose wines can be made, all of which impact its colour and flavour. One method is the process of pressing black grapes to extract colour and tannins from the skins. Another manner is to remove the juice from fermenting red
wine, after only a short period of time, according to the winemakers desired outcome of color and style. The process of juice being transferred into a separate vat for the purpose of producing a rosé wine, while the remainder results in a red wine is known as Saignée. The winemaker can also choose to create a rosé wine by blending a touch of red wine into a vat of white. Rosé is typically a light to medium-bodied wine known for its low tannins and very rare use of oak. Thanks to an overall increase in the quality of rosé wines, it is not difficult to obtain a stunning dry rosé; however off-dry examples with high acidity that carry the sweetness through are still easily available. Delicate berry flavour notes such as strawberry, raspberry, and cranberry with subtle hints of cinnamon and vanilla, are some of the most common characteristics of blush wines. Keep rosé at the top of the list when selecting a wine as it is a versatile drink of choice and pairs easily with most foods. Rosé is an especially great option for charcuterie boards, smoked or glazed salmon, or raw and steamed vegetable dishes. Serve chilled, but at a slightly warmer temperature than white wine, and serve in a medium sized glass for enhancing the fruit forward bouquet. This summer, paint the season pink, and surprise guests with a bottle of rosé at an alfresco fête or sip on a glass poolside as these wines are meant to be consumed now while young and fresh. Cheers!

A SOULFUL SPOT Wine and Art Piano Bar BY BRANDI PARNELL PHOTOS SHARLA PIKE
n the heart of Kelowna’s downtown is a charmed place with a cool vibe, a creative vortex of sorts. It is a place where life and culture, food and wine, paint and piano all come together. It is a place where newcomers feel welcome and regulars feel at home, a place where you can walk in the door and feel as if you’ve been there before.

“My vision here is for people to share great food paired with fantastic wine,” says owner Wilbur Turner. Wine and Art is a destination to stay for a short visit or until the music stops - a floor to ceiling glass window spot where people passing by feel drawn in. “The atmosphere here becomes part of the conversation,” he says. “My chef is amazing, she creates all of our own recipes, including all of the condiments, sauces and accompaniments for our charcuterie boards. And, she’s always creating new dishes. It’s a labour of love. She absolutely loves to cook and it is evident in every bite.” Most of the menu is gluten free including the desserts, mini churros, cheesecakes and house made truffles. “It really is a meeting place mixed with wine, art, music and food,” says Turner. “We’ve long been known for our painting classes. Now people can come in and freestyle paint, to music. It is the sort of place where you can chill, listen to live music and be inspired.” How could you not be moved? The menu is a showcase of tapas and vino. The walls are decorated with local art, including the gallery wall featuring Kelowna artists, and the air is filled with the conversation and background music. It is a mixing of all things that fills your heart and your glass. And while the music often centres on the grand piano, it can vary. The musicians play on a rotational basis, mostly from the area, but also include travelling solo artists, duos, trios and even quartets. “I absolutely love jazz night. We have amazing local talent, as well as touring musicians including Halifax’s Erin Costelo.” “People tell me they feel welcome here, they feel like they’re in my living room. I love hearing that,” he says. Wine and Art is a cozy, intimate place where people feel comfortable and creative. “One of my regulars calls it her little piece of Montreal. I get that. We are the Valley’s only piano bar, the only wine
bar that’s also a meeting place for artists and painters. It is a free expression place where people come once and then come back with their friends.” Wine and Art is an approachable, gourmet gallery available for private functions. From corporate events to personal functions including birthdays, engagements and gatherings with family or friends, it is ideal setting for your next celebration. “We can’t feature every wine from the region, but we serve exclusively B.C. wines. Our wines rotate on a regular basis, however we always keep on hand our customer favourites. I want people to come in to create, to connect, to be close to beautiful art, nourishing food and soulful sounds. I want people to come up and talk to me, feel totally at home here.” For more information on their classes, hours or to book your next event, stop by for a glass of wine and a tapas or two today or visit wa-kelowna.com. Michael Buffett sat quietly listening to people sharing deeply personal stories of their lives. He was in Laurel Packing House and the air was filled with truth, tales from people who had fallen on hard times and broken hearts. Stories of adversity that were so touching, he could feel their pain; perhaps even more so because he too had struggled at times in his life. Buffett, along with a handful of other equally compassionate souls, was moved to action. That evening, while attending the event, A Conversation that Matters, action found its way into his heart and never left. In fact, like the vegetables he grows, the event planted a seed 64
that grew into a business. The Start Fresh Project is a culinary and farm education program aimed at teaching a broad array of people the skills they need to gain employment, housing and education. It is a program for the disadvantaged, the unemployed and even, the homeless. “Everyday I think about how lucky I am to be able to move this project forward. This city is filled with supportive and giving people who want to make a difference.” The Start Fresh Project (TSFP) is a Farm and Culinary Readiness Training Program. “Our goal is to educate individuals who are currently unemployed, offering the appropriate skills needed to grow, cultivate, distribute, and prepare food for a growing consumer base.” Not only are the skills important, but so too is the mentorship and the incredible network of down-to-earth chefs and farmers and all around amazing people. Having hard conversations not only changes lives, it brings people together. At the end of the event that deeply moved Buffett, the attendees were given $50 and asked to do something impactful with the money they would have spent. “It took me awhile to know how I was going to pay it forward, but once I did, the idea took off.” Buffett went to the Canadian Mental Health Association in Kelowna and offered to teach cooking classes once a month. The classes were so well received, he quickly realized he couldn’t do it by himself. So he reached out to other chefs whom he knew shared his passion to help others, to give back. Melissa Masters, junior director of The Okanagan Chefs Association, Adam Abernethy from Summerhill Winery and Karolina Foks, a registered nutritionist joined the cause. They began teaching and sharing ideas about how they could do even more, of how their reach could grow even greater. What happened next was unexpected. Community partners joined the movement and the education offered
is expanding to including gardening, carpentry (to build a green house), and of course, cooking classes. This year, The Start Fresh Project plans to open a physical location to host boutique cooking classes and catering for events ranging from small gatherings right up to weddings. “Our plan is to be able to create a place where we can offer the people we are teaching gainful employment, with us or any one of the organizations we do business with,” he says. Currently (TSFP) is getting ready to grow vegetables for the Karis Society on land donated by Davara Holdings Ltd. It’s brilliant, inspiring and a bounty of goodness for all involved. “Everywhere I go, everyone I share our story with, wants to jump on board. KITCHEN SINK SALAD BY FRAÎCHE NUTRITION
SALAD INGREDIENTS 1 1/2 cup water (or chicken broth) 3/4 cup medium couscous 2 tbsp olive oil 4 cups spinach leaves 1/2 cup dried cranberries 1 red pepper, diced 2 spring onions, diced 3/4 cup seedless grapes, cut in half 1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled 1 cup cherry tomatoes, cut in half 1 cup diced long English cucumber 1/2 cup toasted or caramelized pecans, chopped* *I caramelized my pecans, but if you don’t want your salad very sweet you can just use plain pecans. To caramelize them place 1 tablespoon of butter in a small frying pan, melt over medium heat, add your pecans and 2 tablespoons of brown sugar plus 1 tablespoon of water and a dash of cayenne pepper, and stir. Cook over medium heat for approximately 3-4 minutes until the brown sugar is caramelized and pour them out onto a sheet of aluminum foil or parchment paper to cool. DIRECTIONS Make your salad dressing according to the directions below. Bring the water or chicken stock to a boil on the stove in a small saucepan. Add the couscous, stir, cover, and remove from the heat. Let it sit for 10 minutes. Uncover the couscous, pour the olive oil into the couscous and fluff it with a fork. Place the couscous on a large plate, spreading it out to cool and put it in the refrigerator until it is completely cooled. In a large bowl, combine all of your remaining salad ingredients together. Toss in the cooled couscous, pour in the dressing (use as much or as little as you like, you likely won’t need the full amount), toss and serve!
SALAD DRESSING INGREDIENTS 2 garlic cloves, crushed Juice of 1 lemon (fresh only, about 2 tbsp) 2 tsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp sugar or honey 3 tbsp red wine vinegar 2/3 cup canola or olive oil DIRECTIONS In a small but tall bowl (or large cup or mason jar), whisk the garlic, lemon, Dijon, sugar or honey, and red wine vinegar together. That process has made me incredibly grateful.” “There are many things I love about art, but I especially love that it has nothing to do with your income level or your education; it is so uniquely personal. Art evokes feelings, takes people of emotional journeys and connects them to other times. More Than Just Lemonade: UNUSUAL HOUSEHOLD USES FOR LEMONS BY BONNIE CONRAD
You probably stock up on lemons when you get an urge for homemade lemonade, but there are plenty of other reasons to keep these citrus fruits in your refrigerator. Lemons can be used in a wide variety of ways around your home, from cleaning your kitchen utensils to soothing a sore throat. Here are some things you may not have known the humble lemon could do. •
•
•
Squeeze a few drops of lemon juice into a glass of warm water and use it as a gargle. Lemon juice is great for soothing a sore throat or curing your bad breath problem. Freshen your garbage disposal by placing a used lemon or lemon peels down the chute. The citrus aroma will give the kitchen a fresh smell and cover up bad odors. Dip a cloth in lemon juice and use it to clean your utensils. Rinse the utensils with warm water to remove discoloration and make your cooking utensils look like new.
•
Clean your furniture and fill in small scratches with a solution of lemon juice and salad oil. Dampen a soft cloth with the solution and rub it over the scratched area.
•
Bring your old paintbrushes back to life by dipping them in boiling lemon juice. Bring the lemon juice to a boil, then lower the heat and place the paintbrush in the solution for 15 minutes. Wash the brushes in warm soapy water and dry them thoroughly.
•
Remove spots from your kitchen and bathroom faucets by rubbing them with
a lemon peel. Buff the faucets with a soft cloth to restore their shine and luster. •
Clean your oven with a mixture of lemon juice and water. The lemon juice and water solution will remove film from the interior of ovens, microwaves and refrigerators.
•
Slice lemons, cover them with water and let them simmer on the stove for an hour. This creates a natural air freshener that will make your whole house smell great.
•
Remove odors from your hands by rubbing them with lemon juice of fresh lemons. This trick works particularly well for stubborn odors like onions and fish.
•
Deodorize your cutting boards and rolling pins by rubbing them with a cut lemon. The wood will absorb the lemon and act as a natural deodorizer.
•
Bury lemon rinds in your yard and garden to deter pests and discourage cats, squirrels and other critters from digging on your property.
•
Give your hair a post-wash shine by rinsing it with lemon juice. Keep a supply of fresh-squeezed lemon juice in your shower right next to the shampoo and conditioner.
Lemons are for more than just making lemonade. With so many great household uses, there are plenty of reasons to pick up a bag of lemons the next time you go to the grocery store.

Life & Local Finds
THE GIRL WITH THE L O W E R B A C K TAT T O O BOOK WRITTEN BY AMY SCHUMER REVIEWED BY BRANDI PARNELL
More than a female comedian, Amy Schumer is a writer, actress and producer. She is strong and beautiful. Over the holidays, while many of our readers hit the slopes, I curled up with a faux fur blanket and a hot chocolate to read Schumer’s debut book. Admittedly, I hadn’t followed her career. I knew relatively little about her. So, I found this read to be surprisingly funny, and more than that, real look into her life. The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo is a series of reflections, vignettes, and lists; it is a look at the high, and low points of her life, and the experiences that have shaped who she is today. She is crude at times, but incredibly compassionate. She can be vulgar, but is able to laugh at herself, and make light of topics many find socially awkward. But what I found most noteworthy and especially appropriate for our first issue of 2017 was the empowering undercurrent, her wideopen heart and her wisdom. Amy Schumer is fierce and she is a student of life. Here are five lessons I took away from reading, The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo:
putting it all on the line, issue after issue is no small feat. But work will seem effortless when you pursue something you desperately want. Almost everyone that has something worth fighting for, acquired what they have with patience, passion and hustle. So post your resolutions, try new things and go for it! Learn from the Lows. We all have them…setbacks, disappointments, and trials. We all get low sometimes. Schumer’s approach to adversity is to not let it define you; learn from it and move on. Whether it be mistakes (forgive yourself), failures (don’t dwell) or heartbreak (love the people who love you), lows add a richness to our lives. Her advice is fitting for a comedian, “The moments that make life worth living are when things are at their worst and you find a way to laugh.” Know Yourself. Schumer, although often in the public’s eye, admits to be an introvert. And she’s okay with that. Knowing yourself means knowing when to close off the world, disconnect from social media and recharge. Hit the slopes, your yoga mat or the gym. Go to the movies, get more sleep, or get out and dance. Whatever you need, discover it, and use those attributes as a road map to living your best life.
“I say if I’m beautiful. I say if I’m strong. You will not determine my story – I will,”
Laugh Often. Especially at yourself. Laughter releases endorphins, makes the body feel good and is contagious. Laughing reduces stress and boosts T-cells, which help the body fight off sickness. Amy Schumer. So instead of retreating, Love Yourself. Love the hell get together with good outta yourself. Love you pals when you’re feeling with 10 pounds to lose. Love blue and laugh – especially yourself with bags under at yourself. There is no better remedy to recover from a your eyes or a Big Mac in your hand. Life isn’t about being perceived blunder, goof or embarrassment. Be human, be perfect. It’s about releasing expectations and being your best Amy, laugh often. company, your tried and true companion, you – completely imperfect. Hustle for What You Want. If you are fortunate enough to find your passion, do whatever it takes to make it your I really enjoyed this read. I appreciated the humour, but reality. Any new venture can be a risk. Here at Mint, especially loved the truth. Enjoy. 74

INTELLIGENT PERFORMANCE Made by Porsche, available at August Motorcars BY BRANDI PARNELL PORSCHE There is something unspeakable about the feeling you get while driving a Porsche. With its sleek, controlled speed, it is a symbol of status, a knowing. It is an undeniable sense of being weightless. At Porsche, they have a guiding principle that summarizes everything they do - as a brand, as a company and as an automotive manufacturer. For more than 65 years, one quote has driven their business strategy and their innovation. In the words of Ferdinand Anton Ernst, or Ferry Porsche, “I looked around and could not find the car I’d been dreaming of, a

small, lightweight sports car that uses energy efficiently, so I decided to build it myself.” That sense of innovation, that nothing is impossible, that if you cannot find it, you create it, is the foundation for Porsche. His dream of making the perfect sports car has always guided the brand. With every concept, every development and every model, they follow an ideal that they refer to as The Porsche Principle - to always get the most out of everything. From day one, they aspired to translate performance into speed – and success – in the most intelligent way possible. It’s not just about horsepower, but about more ideas per horsepower. This principle originates on the racetrack and is embodied in every single one of their cars. They call it “Intelligent Performance.”

“Men love women, but even more than that, men love cars,” LORD HESKETH, RUSH
“Every vehicle we work on is different. From the paint options to the custom car wrapping, from autobody work to wheel dip and calliper paint. We focus on the details, making sure we get it just right. At MI, we personalize your car to your taste.” Services extend to almost everything modified, but include steam injection and evac interior detailing, window tint removal, commercial window tinting, vehicle graphics, company decals, parts and accessories, running Boards, WeatherTech floor mats, interior dress up items, customs badges, tire letters and so much more. In the world of custom cars, what used to be enhanced engine work has now become total works of art. In fact, customizing your ride is becoming commonplace; after all, if you are a man (or woman) who lives for the feel of an open road, you don’t want to drive the same wheels as everyone, make that anyone else. From the mechanics to the fiberglass, from custom car add-ons such as spoilers to chrome, from audacious acoustics to intricate paint jobs, custom vehicles today are sites to be seen. “We take pride in making your vehicle unique and personalized to your own tastes and ideas,” says owner Andy Roffel. From radical racecars to luxury Lamborghinis, from jacked up pick up trucks to fastidious Ferraris, American muscle Mustangs and Camaros, to European makes such as BMW and Audi. Mirror Image has a parts and accessories
department, access to state of the art enchantments and well... artists - who just happen to work on cars. At MI, quarter panels are canvases. Their workmanship is of the highest quality and if you ask just about anyone, they are some of the nicest guys in the industry. “We are all car guys at the shop, crazy about cars all makes and models. And, we all have some sort of car we’re building or working on,” he says. Regardless of the scope of your project, the make or model, their skilled staff will have your ride road worthy with every adaptation you desire. And when you’ve pulled in for the night, when the wind is no longer at your back or when you’ve logged enough miles for one day, they will steam clean and detail your vehicle like new. They will install protection film for your windshield and sidewall lettering, and will work on everything that rumbles from your Harley to your Cessna. Trusted, respected and incredibly meticulous, every job is a one-of-a-kind project, each customer unique. tacy Westfall said, “Sometimes you find yourself in the middle of nowhere and sometimes in the middle of nowhere you find yourself.”
MotoVida is not just a bike shop. It’s the good life. It’s the connection between machine and road. It’s the feeling of freedom, without discrimination, where anything is possible; and it is a place to craft your story - one mile, one part, and one bike at a time. Established in 2014, Brent Giesbrecht, founder and chief creative officer, and his wife Candace had a vision to create a motorbike shop that was non-intimidating; a destination for people to hang out, talk bikes and celebrate life...on two wheels. Whether you’ve been riding for years or are just about to start. Whether you’re in the market to purchase your first bike, your next bike or to personalize the one you have, they’ll help you express yourself with individualized styles and attention to detail. “Riding is a highly personal experience,“ says Brent. “It begins and ends with you.” When it comes to your dream bike, the sky really is the limit. “We love taking an average bike and making it into something special, something unique. There is nothing “cookie cutter” about what we do.” “We’re a community of riders,” he says. “A welcoming tribe of people who believe it doesn’t matter what you ride, just as long as you ride. That is what MotoVida is all about. Maybe we are a bit old school, but we truly believe in a handcrafted motorcycle lifestyle.” “MotoVida was built on customs, restorations, service and gear,” says Brent, “but with the addition of Brian
Milligen to the team as CEO last March, the business has grown significantly. In addition to enhancing our customer’s shopping experience, his 30 year career in customer service and retail contributed to MotoVida becoming Kelowna’s authorized Moto Guzzi and Aprilia motorcycles sales and service centre this past July.” When asked about the company’s growth, Milligen was quick to say that MotoVida remains true to their roots. “We’re built on a customer-centric, nonintimidating, inclusive foundation where enthusiasts can come together and share the MotoVida experience – a life on two wheels.” He continues “What you ride is a reflection of who you are, which is why we only source the highest quality bikes, parts and apparel to make sure your next adventure is distinctly yours.” To help you on your way, MotoVida has a complete parts and service department. “We are one of the few shops in town that still works on most makes and models,” says James Balfour, MotoVida’s parts and service coordinator. “Not only are we able and willing to service them, but we love the challenge of working on the older bikes.” At MotoVida, they believe in quality products, skilled craftsmanship and living life fully. Our love affair
with Opera Kelowna has grown to new heights. Here at Mint, we are continually meeting new people. People we admire, people who inspire. We meet to discuss vibrant landscapes, to satiate our palates; we are grateful for each day and humbly reflect each night. We are creatives and we live in a world where everything is more pleasing when it is experienced with every one of our senses. “I am most delighted to know there are those within our community who understand the importance of aesthetics in all art forms and who pursue beauty as a human right,” says Alexandra Babbel - visionary, musical leader and artistic director of Opera Kelowna. In her role, Alexandra, lyric soprano, infuses every performance with the finest aspects of life from song to fashion, production to design. Opera Kelowna’s annual fundraising gala, A Bohemian Masquerade, in support of their upcoming summer production of Puccini’s La bohème, featuring Chilean tenor Leon De La Guardia is no exception. Leon’s professional debut began in Spain as Don Jose in Carmen; he has portrayed the lead tenor roles in La bohème, Madame Butterfly, Nabucco, La Traviata, Macbeth, Bion, & Bastian and Bastienne. As Rodolfo in Opera Kelowna’s production of Puccini’s La bohème, in August 2017, Leon will make his North American operatic debut. One of the most frequently performed operas across the globe, Puccini’s La bohème follows a group of young Parisians–Rodolfo, Mimì, Marcello, Musetta, Schaunard, and Colline while they struggle for their art and for their love.
and sample local wines. Be tantalized by rich colours and earthy textures, in a locally styled bohemianthemed fashion show. Inside The Coast Capri Ballroom guests are encouraged to dress up in their bohemian best, don a mysterious masquerade mask (also available for sale) and quickstep alongside a professional ballroom dancer. Get lost in the sounds of opera, jazz and percussion, all performed by special musical guests. And of course, be enticed with a few excerpts from Opera Kelowna’s upcoming main-stage opera, Puccini’s La bohème. In Paris, in costume, in a sea of sensuality, anything is possible. Tickets are $225 with special thanks to the sponsors of the event, Quails’ Gate Winery, Harmony Honda and Castanet. There will be a live and silent auction as well as other fun and interactive fundraising activities. For more information or to purchase your ticket, visit www.operakelowna.com.
Though originally set in the 1840s (and based on Henri Murger’s 1851 novel, Scènes de la vie de bohème), this immortal opera is easily translated into new times and new places. Many will recognize the 1996 musical Rent as being based on Puccini’s La bohème. To support the ongoing efforts of Opera Kelowna, bohemian is the theme for their upcoming gala evening, their most unique fundraiser yet. On April 21st, 2017, enter the colourful and eclectic world of nineteenthcentury bohemian France. Be swept to the streets of Paris where you’ll acquaint yourself with a poet, a painter, a musician and many artisans, offering their wares. Trends + Tips WITH HEATHER & JO
LITTLE BARN
GREENERY +
Nature
Simple greenery brings a soft fresh look to an event such as garden parties, tents or gazebos. Details such as lighting trees or bringing the outside in with branches and vines also makes a space feel like an outdoor room. And it’s ecofriendly too!
MIXING +
Matching
Our favorite is warming up a space with vintage or antique pieces along with traditional furniture used in unexpected ways. Industrial spaces using vintage and rustic pieces gives a softer eclectic feel that your guests will remember! Vintage with a twist we like to call it. Using natural linens, soft pastels, floral garland and lanterns for centerpieces makes for a relaxed vibe.
COMFORT
Zones
This new trend seems to be very popular, not only at weddings, but at any event. Creating lounge spaces makes the guests feel comfortable, like they are being entertained at home. Or if it’s outside, create an intimate setting with pillows and blankets, low tables and couches, candles or lights hung from branches or trees.
UNIQUE
Backdrops
Backdrops can range from the dramatic to the simple. There are so many different styling ways to create this. We love all things vintage, so implementing backdrops for photos using unique vintage items like old doors, trunks, old windows and frames with string lights is a fun way to make a place for guests to take that perfect photo! 90

“Little Barn loves all things vintage. We are two long time friends who love to stage events. We can create a look for you and your venue or come along side to help you and see your vision come to light.“

While there are some differing opinions on how old Canada really is (doesn’t she look great???), on July 1st, 1867 the British North America Act created the Dominion of Canada. At the time, it consisted of just four provinces: Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Since then, the country as grown to 10 provinces and three territories including Nunavut, which broke away from the Northwest Territories in 1999. MINT Kelowna

QUEEN ELIZABETH SAID OF THIS FINE NATION, THAT IT IS A
“welcoming, respectful and compassionate country.’’ #PROUD
AND SO TO CELEBRATE the big 15-0, Canada is doing it up in true red and white style. Last December, in a year-end interview with The Canadian Press, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke of Canada's birthday celebrations as a time to "really connect with Canadians," making it a "moment of reflection," as we look back with pride and ahead with possibility. This milestone in our history is called a sesquicentennial (pronounced: SES-kwuh-sen-TEN-nee-yul) and is the biggest celebration since our beloved nation turned 100, back in 1967. And while each province will kick up their Canadian heels differently, there many events taking place in all over the country - all year long. In case you’ve been out of the celebratory loop, here are just a few highlights in and around BC: • Ballet Kelowna and the OSO is presenting Canadiana Suite: A Sesquicentennial Celebration on May 4th and 5th at Kelowna Community Theatre. • "A Once in a Lifetime Trip Across the Top of Canada," is a Canadian train tour that wines, dines and entertains guests with stops in Whitehorse, Rankin Inlet and St. John's. Each stop is crafted by some of the country's most accomplished and celebrated chefs. offerings, as well as spectacular fireworks on Canada Day, July 1, 2017. • Opera Kelowna and University of British Columbia – Okanagan presents Opera Under the Stars August 2nd. • Vancouver will mark the country’s sesquicentennial with a nine-day arts and culture festival at Larwill Park. The three main events include The Drum Is Calling Festival (July 22-30 at Larwill Park), The Gathering of Canoes (July 19-22 at Jericho Beach) and the Walk For Reconciliation (September). Regardless of your ethnicity or geography, regardless of how big or small you wish to commemorate; there will be cultural and historical events from coast to coast - events to honour our history and celebrate our progress; events that will be diverse, eclectic and executed with kindness because that’s just who we are – held right up until the lights go out on 2017.
IN CASE YOU WEREN’T ALREADY PROUD, HERE ARE A FEW INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THIS BEAUTIFUL PLACE WE CALL HOME.

Canada holds two records: most gold medals won by a country in a winter Olympics as well as most gold medals won by a host country in the winter Olympics. Both accomplished in Vancouver 2010.
So there you have it. Here at Mint, we are a patriotic crew. This year especially, it’s time to raise your flag, up your frequency of ‘Eh!’s and mind your p’s and q’s. It’s time to stock up on maple syrup, eat an extra piece of bacon and order a double double. Heck, while you’re at it, take up curling, shoot a few pucks, have a Beavertail or sew a maple leaf patch on your backpack and travel. Kidding, well kind of. However you acknowledge this monumental year in Canadian history, do in true Canuck style...with a glowing heart.

Opinion Investing in the
AGE OF TRUMP WITH ODLUM BROWN LIMITED
In January, Donald Trump became the 45th President of the United States. The resulting uncertainty is naturally worrying, but our investment approach remains unchanged.
O
dlum Brown is in the business of building custom portfolios comprised of high-quality companies with business models and cash flows that remain steadfast in diverse economic scenarios. We search for a higher margin of safety and regularly stress-test our investment thesis. For example, it’s difficult to envision a policy change that will suddenly reduce demand for medical offices, credit card spending or electricity. Markets will churn as Mr. Trump’s legislative agenda takes shape. In the short term, corporate earnings, unemployment and real wages are improving in the U.S. The focus on increased government spending, deregulation and lower taxes will likely feel pretty good. We do worry about the longer-term implications to international trade, human rights and equality. The shift towards deregulation, isolationism and racial divisiveness may lead to economic and social damage.
Doug Chambers, B.A.Sc., P.Eng., MBA, CIM Director, Branch Manager, Portfolio Manager
Kwame Boateng Investment Assistant
Remember that change and uncertainty are the only constants. The world has witnessed dramatic geopolitical change in the last 60 years, including 15 different American administrations. Regardless, America’s economy is roughly 33x larger today than it was in 1960.
