You know who she is. That woman with the confident beauty that seems natural and effortless.

You're a REAL Beauty

She likely has a little help. Here are a few keys to authenticlooking, carefree beauty that will have people wondering what makes you glow! LIPS Plump lips are often associated with youthful beauty. But there’s more to it than just pumping up the volume. A good injector will properly balance proportions and highlight all your facial features. This may involve enhancing the cupid’s bow, lifting a curled upper lip, or correcting asymmetry.

EXPERIENCE MATTERS Every client requires a different amount of filler injected in a slightly different way. Experience and fine attention to detail is key, along with precise injecting techniques using micro-cannulas, which minimize the risk of bruising and swelling.

MAKE THE MOST OF IT To get the look you’re after, you really need great skin. Laser skin tightening, chemical peels, physician-grade facials, and professional skin care products will optimize your treatment.

NOW OWN IT! Carefree confidence is the final touch that will truly make your beauty glow!

Coming from a family enriched in the furniture world, founders of City Furniture, it was a natural fit to carry on that path. While furniture was always in the blood, it was a trip to Europe in which the inspiration came for what the Okanagan needs. From the old world architecture and compact living spaces which provided the “less is more” outlook, it was obvious the future was in contemporary. Having grown up in Kelowna most of his life and seeing it blossom to what it is today, he knew the Okanagan deserved a little of Europe.

Spring has arrived at Strut Footwear and we couldn’t be happier with our collection. Please be forewarned, the trends for footwear this season are absolutely gorgeous! Here’s what’s hot:

For heels, it is all about the chunky, stacked and block heel. They are so easy to walk in and you’ll see them in all heights.

We are seeing a great deal of sport-casual shoes with that thick white sole. You will find these in a sophisticated oxford look all the way down to a canvas sneaker in a variety of funky colours. Tip to keep the white sole white: magic eraser.

The color for spring is

The biggest trend of the season is the slide. We love them because they elongate the leg, you can dress them up or down, and they are so easy to slip on and off. There you have it, some tips for spring, and as always, fashion and comfort can go hand in hand. Now remember, ladies, give a girl the right pair of shoes and she can conquer the world!

CAPTURING ALL THINGS BEAUTIFUL BY CHRISTINE ESOVOLOFF

ver since she was a small child, Brandie has had an eye for all things beautiful. From floral design and photography to esthetics and makeup, she has always loved to capture, enhance, and create beauty around her. “I see potential in everything. Where others see a blank canvas, I see possibility. I love finding ways to bring the beauty out in all things.”

E

Despite her love of refinement and all things polished, she’s is much more than just a girly-girl - this is a woman who can also change her own spark plugs, chop firewood, and hunt or fish like the best of them. She is, you might say, a jack-of-all-trades. Perhaps that is why she chose to plant her roots here in Kelowna over 18 years ago. “I love it here! The Okanagan really is a place where you can do and have

it all. Nature is right at our finger tips and so is culture and city life, it is a great mix of both and with how our cultural scene is evolving makes it even more exciting!” Brandie started her career in floral design but shifted gears to esthetics after some feedback from others. “Some different people had commented on how good I was with my own nails, hair and makeup so I started looking into becoming an Esthetician, and it really sparked my interest.” And although makeup is taught in the Esthetics course, it flowed very naturally for Brandie. “I have always been a lover of art. Makeup artistry is a creative expression and every face is a different masterpiece. I love watching the details, feelings, character, confidence and inner beauty shine from the within.” LEFT: WHITE WILLOW PHOTOGRAPHY RIGHT: JANELLE PHOTOGRAPHY

And it is very obvious when talking to Brandie how passionate she is about makeup artistry and helping women feel great about themselves. “It is an amazing feeling to help instill self confidence in the women who sit before me, trusting me. Her passion for empowering women has no doubt fueled her success in both makeup artistry and esthetics. She has worked in all aspects of the industry from bridal parties, dance productions, graduations, professional photo shoots, and charitable events to, of course, day-today clients. “I can’t even count how many women I’ve worked with. As the salon celebrates three years in business and looks to the future, the owners have set high expectations for themselves, the staff and for serving the needs of their customers.

“We love the environment that we’ve created. It’s very warm and cozy. Our team is fantastic, we’re one big happy family. Everyone who comes in say they feel a positive vibe and know they are welcome” said co-owner and senior stylist, Tara Sebastianis. The salon has eight senior hair stylists and one esthetician, therefore, they can offer a full range of services for the entire family including hair, nails, eyelashes, waxing, weddings, and other special events. This full-service salon is dedicated to consistently providing high customer satisfaction by rendering excellent service and quality products. These products are environmentally friendly and cruelty-free. The salon staff are very proud of their five-star rating. Tara was in her mid-twenties when she opened the salon as a young entrepreneur. She is grateful for the support of her mother and business partner, Susan Sebastianis. “She’s the backbone of this company and helps me through everything. This wouldn’t be happening if it wasn’t for her,” said Tara. “At first, I didn’t really consider myself an entrepreneur. I saw myself as a hair stylist that works with really great people, then after hours

I plan and organize. But, I realize now that yes, we did start the business from scratch, I am an entrepreneur and we’re making it work,” said Tara. “People are always asking me what the trends are for the year and the really great thing about being in our industry right now is that everything seems to be acceptable and people are doing whatever they want. What is trending right now is being yourself,” said Tara. “It’s about being you, being unique, being an individual. We love this because it works so well with our own slogan, which is - Be Your Own Kind of Beautiful. We want our guests to be happy with who they are and to celebrate it.” As the stylists are so passionate about their profession they work hard to keep current by attending cutting and colouring classes with experienced educators, keeping an eye on trends through various social media platforms and

continuing to use mannequins in the salon to test new colours and shades. The owners’ main focus is to always give back to the community. This is a priority which is achieved through donations and offering their services and time. No fundraiser is denied, as they try to help in any way possible. With a team of aggressive young overachievers, under the leadership and guidance of this mother-daughter duo, Crimson Hair Salon is leading the way in this everevolving industry. GIFT GIVING Helping You Design Meaningful Gifts WITH KAREN ROUSSEAU

of K ROUSSEAU COLLECTIVE

Creativity has always been at the heart of everything I do. Designing fabulous spaces and gardens, working with textiles and leather, and most recently combining a love of stones and jewelry and learning to silversmith. By far the most surprising and rewarding part of my business has been helping people in designing and creating meaningful gifts. Gifting can be a tricky business, and often feels like a hollow obligation. Not only are there ample occasions to contend with, but there is also a sea of manufactured stuff at our fingertips. Creating meaning is key, especially in todays maker culture where people are so often seeking products made by someone they can relate to. Enter the handcrafted ‘anything’ with just a touch of thoughtful customization. Enough so that it is recognizable and meaningful to the person receiving it, but not so much that it will be displayed in a trophy case alongside the curling championship plaques. Using dates, initials, and GPS coordinates has been key for me in achieving this subtle coded meaning when making pieces of jewelry. What started as a request from a friend for her bridesmaids has triggered a chain reaction of stamping messages and codes onto almost anything you can imagine. The original location tag necklaces are a trendy and simple way to give something unexpected, thoughtful and totally wearable. Larger pieces like cuff bracelets or leather wrap bracelets can accommodate more info and work well for messages or phrases. They can be used to commemorate a special place, a significant date, or even the loss of a loved one or pet. 22

DRESSES

At Jigsaw Clothing we have created a warm and friendly focused atmosphere. The store, although small, is where we proudly present our clothes and accessories, in an intimate shopping experience. Our main goal: to make you look and feel as good as you possibly can. The key to our success: our exemplary customer service. We would love to welcome you to the little house on Pandosy!

By far the best way to stay cool on our hot summer days. From Banana blues polka dot prints to a stylish linen shift.... paired with a thick soled runner and you have the perfect “put on and go” look !

CLASSIC PIECES If you’re not the kind of person who cares to follow seasonal trends and instead strives for some sort of continuity from year to year, you might gravitate toward a simple, white cotton blouse which happens to be right on trend this season and will continue to be for years to come.

ack in 2015, Ocean began to sketch small pieces of art that quickly filled two sketch books. A few years later she decided to ask her parents if they'd support her in opening her own business and they were all for it. Wet Ink was born on April 7th, 2017. She began with printing her art work onto T-Shirts and Hoodies with a Vinyl heat press. Late July 2017 rolled around and That's when she decided every piece needs to be 100% crafted by her hands. Soon enough, she found herself carefully making her own patterns and sewing pieces of fabric together with guidance from her Nonna. “I had never taken a sewing class so I wasn't amazing but, practice is key to learning.” says Ocean. “My first piece was a mesh high necked long sleeve that I called the "Danae Top". Since then I've created Bikinis, Shorts, body suits, T-Shirts Etc for Summer wear and Coats, Pants and one pieces for Winter Wear.”

BUYING A BRA SHOULDN’T BE LIKE H AV I N G A R O O T CANAL BY SCOTT SEALEY

PHOTOS BY APRYL MAXINE STEAD

For many women buying a new swimsuit or bra is a dreaded task that is often avoided, but it doesn’t have to be, nor should it be. his is especially true when you visit Esteem Lingerie. This lovely boutique shop is owned by the dynamic mother-daughter team of Florenda Pickett and Angela O’Brien.

“The essence of Esteem Lingerie is to empower women to see the beauty within,” said Florenda. “We want women to feel great about themselves and that starts with a great fitting bra.” Esteem Lingerie recently expanded and moved a few blocks from their previous location. The new shop is open and spacious, allowing customers to browse their products in a warm, comfortable atmosphere. They carry loungewear, sleepwear, swimwear, panties and have over 6000 bras onsite. “When I think about our business, I often think of my Nana’s words of wisdom…Beds, bras and shoes, that’s where we need quality and support because that is what is going to make or break our day. Here at Esteem, we want women to love themselves, love their bodies and make sure that key things in their lives are supporting them. We provide one of these key things which is great underwear,” said Angela. As the business has been open for over 12 years, Florenda and Angela hold their suppliers to the highest of standards. They spend time researching and testing product lines before they bring them into the store so they are confident in providing a superior product. 26

criteria that we assess before we buy. Not only does it have to fit well and feel great, it has to be durable and have a quality of construction. They must also have a beauty factor so women can feel great wearing them,” said Angela. While Esteem Lingerie has an amazing selection of quality products, they also pride themselves on offering their clientele the best customer service with their knowledge and experience. They are respectably well-known for being premium bra fitters as all of their employees are certified by Ali Cudby’s Fab Fit Academy. As well, they are excited to be launching their post-surgical line including mastectomy products

that will help all women, not just those looking for everyday bras. “We don’t want women to have their drawers filled with a bunch of bras they only wear once in a blue moon. We want women to have three to five good quality bras that they wear everyday that fit well and make them feel terrific,” said Florenda. Florenda and Angela know that helping to empower women and improve their self-esteem can be challenging, especially being in lingerie industry where women have to reveal their most intimate selves. Their message, however, is simple.

“We have to be accepting of who we are today. We have to learn to love the body we have today and dress the body we have today and that starts with beautiful, good quality undergarments that are fitted to make you feel amazing all day long,” said Angela.

Wellness

BY NIKKI HUNTER AND RAINA LUTZ RHN

Healthy skin requires healthy care products and beauty rituals as well as respecting that our skin health is in complete synergy with our body’s overall heath. NIKKI & RAINA’S TOP 10 TOOLS TO DISCOVER HEALTHY SKIN HOLISTICALLY: 1. CLEANSE YOUR SKIN EVERY NIGHT.

4. EAT AND APPLY ANTIOXIDANTS DAILY!

Removing the pollution, makeup and grime from your skin allows it to repair and replenish from a hard day of protecting you from disease, pollution, UV and harmful bacteria. Taking the time to wash with toxinfree cleansing oils will gently break up any make up or sunscreen and neutralize free radicals for a deep clean. Rinse well with warm water.

Eat the rainbow! Bright colored foods like fruits and vegetables are high in antioxidants. An antioxidant is a molecule that inhibits the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that can produce free radicals, leading to chain reactions that may damage our cells. Antioxidants such as ascorbic acid (vitamin C) stop these chain reactions. The term "antioxidant" is mainly used in our discussions for the natural chemicals found in foods and body tissue which are said to have beneficial health effects. Applying products that contain antioxidants like photo stable vitamin C, prickly pear or resveratrol can neutralize the chemical reaction before it takes places.

2. GET A GREAT NIGHTS' SLEEP. One study found that regularly experiencing poor sleep increases signs of aging, diminished skin barrier function and lower satisfaction with appearance. "Beauty Sleep" is a real thing, getting eight hours of solid sleep every night becomes crucial not only for how you feel but how you look. 3. GET HELP TO DUMP SUGAR & PROCESSED FOODS. Among its many other problems, excess sugar stresses out our liver and digestive system, contributing deeply to issues on our skin including a natural process that's known as glycation, in which the sugar in your bloodstream attaches to proteins to form harmful new molecules called advanced glycation end products. The effect? Once damaged, our springy and resilient collagen and elastin become dry and brittle, leading to loss of density and firmness. A variety of different nutrients play a role in healthy skin, so add in lots of healthy whole foods as you work to remove sugar.

28

MINT Kelowna

5. ELIMINATE FOOD SENSITIVITIES & BALANCE YOUR GUT. Allergies and sensitivities have become such a big problem. Our imbalanced guts are creating many new issues and allergies for people, and those with gut issues tend to have many sensitivities. Food sensitivities can trigger or exacerbate skin conditions. Studies have shown that dairy can contribute to acne. Work with nutritionist or local naturopath so you can strengthen your gut and begin balancing your bodies' overreaction to foods that should not trigger it. Your gut influences healthy skin far more than you might realize. Researchers are finding that probiotics impact gut microbiota to influence various conditions including inflammation & skin conditions like acne.

If you suspect leaky gut or have other gut imbalances, we recommend working with a practitioner like a Holistic Nutritionist or a naturopath to pinpoint & balance these problems and of course having 2 oz. daily of Experience Kombucha will begin improving your guts’ health. 6. EAT AN OMEGA 3-RICH DIET. Dry, itchy, scaling, or flaking skin can potentially suggest a fatty acid deficiency, one thing we look at when clients present with these symptoms. Eat omega-3 rich foods like wild-caught fish and flaxseed regularly, and also supplement with a high-potency fatty acid formula to support your skin. 7. EXERCISE REGULARLY. You knew this one was coming, right? When our body temperature rises like when you exercise, skin blood flow transfers heat from the core of the body to the skin. Sweating helps move and excrete toxins from your body, and saunas or steam baths are another smart option that help release the toxins through your skin. Get the toxins off your skin after the sauna or steam. Use a warm shower with a toxinfree cleansing product.

MINT Kelowna

29

8. CALM YOUR ANXIETY. Since our body pulses out stress hormones even when we think of things that aren't going to physically harm us (like an unpaid bill or dirty laundry) long term stress ends up showing on our face. Studies show emotional stress can reveal or even exacerbate a number of skin disorders. It's easy to say "Find something that helps you to de-stress and do it regularly" but most of us need help finding that thing, what it looks like. Work with a practitioner to find the root cause of your stress so you can begin moving away from it, or join Scott and Raina for their Calming Anxiety workshops at the shop. 9. CHOOSE TOXIN-FREE, NATURAL SKINCARE AND ETHICAL PRODUCTS: Take time to learn what is in a product by reading the ingredients. It’s easy to get caught up in the promises of fast results and misleading marketing of what’s not in it. Beauty and personal care products are commonly loaded with known irritants, toxins, perfumes, endocrine disruptors and parabens. You know we have a safe space for you to shop because Nikki has done all the research and homework for you. 10. FIND PROFESSIONALS YOU TRUST. The health and beauty industry has started a huge shift as its leaders are discovering the incredible crossover of their knowledge. Lean on the experts you trust and their local wellness community to help you find safe spaces to learn, shop and discover how to approach your beauty from a place of love and self-care. Beauty truly requires a deeply holistic approach. Combining clean, mindful products, healthy food, digestion, personal beauty rituals and positive personal dialogue are key to developing your own special sauce when it comes to discovering your beauty. The more we learn, understand and respect that our skin health is in complete synergy with our body’s overall heath, the faster + easier it is for us to implement real tools to discover profoundly healthy skin. While we can't promise that this will happen over night, we can promise an empowering journey.

Does your energy commonly crash in the afternoon, around 3 or 4 pm? Do you become drowsy, unproductive, brain fogged, fatigued and unmotivated ? Though common, these afternoon “crashes” aren’t normal. Instead, they are a sign your adrenal glands are fatigued and your blood sugar is unstable, going too low for your brain and body to function optimally. HOW TO SURVIVE AN AFTERNOON ENERGY CRASH 1. EAT A HIGH PROTEIN AND FIBER BREAKFAST Protein and fiber are the two most important macronutrients that help to keep our blood sugar stable and provide us with all day energy. Here are a few examples that are protein and fiber rich:

32

Turkey or chicken sausage with sautéed veggies (use healthy fats like coconut or olive oil) and a side of berries

Protein shake made with protein powder, leafy greens, berries and avocado or nut butter

Eggs with added egg whites and baked sweet potato

2. DON’T MAKE A BAD SITUATION WORSE The first thing most people reach for is a quick fix - caffeine, chocolate, an energy drink, or something sugary, however, it’s only making a bad situation worse. These may perk you up for a while, but they cause more extreme blood sugar spikes and drops again later in the day. When this happens on a regular basis (several times a day for most people), you can further deplete your adrenal glands and lead to exhaustion. Blood sugar imbalances also create a perpetual cycle of craving and bingeing. 3. GO EASY ON HIGH CARB/STARCH FOODS AND ADDED SUGARS Eating high-carb/starch foods (such as white rice, bread, wraps, pasta, etc.) and treats with added sugars (muffins, scones, cookies, cakes, granola bars, energy balls, etc.) without protein and fiber is akin to doing #2 above. Always eat a bit of protein and fiber when you have something sweet or starchy to slow down the absorption of sugar and prevent a blood sugar spike.

A good rule to follow is to keep added sugars to less than 25 grams per day - it is harder than you think!

Be prepared by having a healthy snack ready to go for the afternoon.

4. EAT SMARTER IN THE FACE OF AN ENERGY CRASH

Here are a few examples:

Some of us won’t be able to turn things around overnight, especially if the causes of their adrenal fatigue aren’t being fully addressed. If you find yourself slipping, do whatever it takes to stop yourself from reaching for stimulants and sugar. Instead, grab something that is high in protein, and balance with some healthy fats and carbs. This will prevent the crash that follows a sugar and caffeine binge.

A boiled egg with carrots, peppers and some rice crackers

A palm sized serving of nuts with berries

A low sugar protein bar

Plus, make sure to drink two glasses of water (dehydration is an energy and adrenal drainer)! Try following these guidelines over the next week and see how your afternoon energy responds!

SCIENCE IS THE SECRET BEHIND

REVOLUTIONARY SKIN & HAIR RESTORATION THERAPY BY DR. ANDREW DE PEIRI, MD, CCFP

Who would have thought that carbon dioxide gas could play a role in smooth, tight, cellulite-free skin?

I

t may sound strange, but the health benefits of carbon dioxide on the skin were widely recognized almost a century ago in European healing spas. There, patients with medical conditions, such as poor blood circulation, were sent to bathe in C02 rich waters. Based on the same principles, the Italians developed “Carbossiterapia”

34

MINT Kelowna

(Carbossitherapy), which is popular today in Europe and South America. Carbossitherapy is a unique treatment that uses carbon dioxide gas (C02) injected under the skin to improve skin elasticity and flush out fat cells. The De Pieri Clinic is currently the only clinic in the Okanagan offering Carbossitherapy. We use it for the treatment of fat pads or sagging skin under the eyes, “double chin”, and fat deposits or cellulite of the legs, buttocks, and abdomen. It takes advantage of the body’s tendency of replacing C02 with oxygen, a process known in medicine as the Bohr effect. Through this process, the injected C02 causes the dilation of blood vessels, and actually results in increased oxygen content in the cells. The improvement in blood flow also transports collagenproducing cells to the area. The result is firmer subcutaneous tissue, and, over time, an increase in the thickness of the dermal layer. Or, in other words, younger-looking, firmer skin on the face and body! Tightening and smoothing results can be dramatic, particularly under the eyes and around the tummy. Patients normally see results after 6-8 treatments. It is wonderful in combination with other treatments, such as lasers, IPL, dermal fillers, or even Botox, for maximal effect.

CARBOSSITHERAPY FOR HAIR RESTORATION: Carbossitherapy also has an exciting application for hair regrowth on the scalp. Although hair loss is commonly related to hormonal changes, another theory suggests that poor blood flow to the scalp reduces the performance of hair follicles. There is an area under the scalp called the “galea aponeurotica”. This area is basically a large flat tendon that connects the muscles of the forehead with the muscle at the back of the head, exactly the area where hair thinning and baldness typically happens. It would seem that the blood flow within and over the galea is much less than other areas of the scalp. Over time, blood flow to the overlying skin is diminished, predisposing the skin in that area to be susceptible to hair

loss. This can be easily seen, as people with hair loss note that the skin of the scalp gets progressively tighter and thinner as the hair follicles get thinner and fewer. Carbossitherapy leads to improvement in blood flow to the scalp, which restores nutrients to the hair follicles and thickening of individual hairs as well as regrowth of new follicles. This can be a stand-alone treatment for hair growth, or added to a multi-modal approach which incorporates medications, hormones, infra-red light therapy, and even platelet rich plasma treatments. Carbossitherapy treatment is safe, non-surgical, nonpharmaceutical, and requires no downtime. And because it takes advantage of the body’s own natural processes, results from this treatment are natural - looking! All are encouraged to deepen their practice in their own way,” Hannah adds.

“I wanted to build a community where people can approach themselves with compassion and self-care. That includes a varied group of masterful, science-minded teachers. Together we believe a regular yoga and meditation practice can improve creativity, reduce stress, improve productivity and strengthen the immune system.”

MOVE INTO ACTION WITH EMMA BLOCH-HANSEN, MBA, CPC ORGANIZATION DEVELOPMENT CONSULTANT & LEADERSHIP COACH OF i2a COACHING AND CONSULTING

Having a sense that we are growing, contributing and achieving more is a large part of feeling happy and successful. In organizations we frequently see opportunities for growth, development and challenge being key to engagement and accomplishing superior results. In response, we consume vast quantities of content, whether through courses, webinars, books, articles, blogs etc., with the result that we know more than ever before about what we could or should be doing. As organizations and individuals, we devote large investments in time and money to expand our knowledge.

State why the change is important.

Identify a micro-behaviour change.

Determine strategies to support the change.

Mindfully practice the new behaviour.

Accept it won’t unfold perfectly or easily.

But here’s the thing… while acquiring knowledge is important and can be easy, interesting, and satisfying; knowing something doesn’t necessarily result in us doing something differently.

Keep at it!

Celebrate progress and mastery.

SO, WHAT CAN WE DO TO MOVE OUR INTENTION TO ACTION?

Turn intentions into habits and experience a feeling of pride, accomplishment and happiness – and watch results improve.

Focus on forming new habits. Habits are key to growth as they support constant and intentional progress. Small wins achieved through developing a habit, reward us by building our confidence and capability. Forming a new habit is simple, yet not always easy. If we are willing to experience temporary discomfort and commit effort to trying a new way, then these simple actions will contribute to the formation of a new habit:

Taylor Whelan OF CEDARCREEK ESTATE WINERY

OLD WORLD WINEMAKING MEETS MODERN TECH AT CEDARCREEK BY SCOTT SEALEY

obert Louis Stevenson once wrote, “Wine is bottled poetry.” I think even the most stubbornly unpoetic soul would have to agree with him after a sip (or is it a stanza in this case?) of a particularly fine vintage. But actually making the wine? That’s a very different story. Listening to Taylor Whelan, head winemaker at CedarCreek Estate Winery, the process of going from vine to vino seems to be one part science fiction, one part detective story.

R

“Precision agriculture is helping us find the best grapes in our vineyards. Certain areas tend to do better than others so we use drones and vigor mapping to find the sections with the best 42

MINT Kelowna

One of the innovations Taylor continues to develop at CedarCreek is their Single Vineyard Platinum Tier Program. These small batch wines are made exclusively with grapes that have distinct flavour characteristics and are only found on unique parcels of land in the vineyard. In years past, some of this fruit would have ended up as part of a blend but Taylor felt they could do more with it. “As one of the Okanagan’s original eight wineries, CedarCreek is blessed with some of the most mature vines in the area. We have all these sections where the grapes have developed such complex flavours and character and I wanted to do something different with them.” The hardest part is actually finding these distinct sections, a task Taylor is happy to tackle with the hands-on approach of someone who loves what he does. “It’s exciting to walk around the vineyard, kicking rocks and feeling the soil, trying to figure out why fruit from one row tastes so different from two rows over. It’s a fun challenge.” This fresh approach to finding the most distinct fruits has, unsurprisingly, led to some incredibly special wines at CedarCreek. Though all will please the palate, Taylor recommends trying their Platinum Block 2 and 4 Pinot Noirs. “They’re made with grapes from different soil types just 200 metres apart but with totally distinct flavours. It’s an exploration of the differences that only soil can bring out.” With a four year plan in place to certify all estate vineyards as organic, as well as a brand-new Tasting Room and yearround restaurant opening later this year, there are plenty of exciting things happening at CedarCreek. So what’s Taylor most excited about? quality fruit,” explains Taylor. “Our viticulturalists analyze the grapes for things like maturity, sugar, and acidity, then we use that info to try to elevate the rest of the block.” Charts, graphs, and modern tech have helped refine the process but in the end, winemaking has always been more about art than analysis. That’s why they take a backseat to a tried and true method that’s been around for thousands of years: the taste test. “All these layers of technology can help you make decisions but in the end it always comes down to walking the rows and actually tasting the fruit. That’s when you really get inspired.”

“I’m a big bee guy and we just got 17 new honeybee hives which is cool,” he laughs. rom learning the violin at the age of three to the years he spent working in his father’s cedar mill as a teenager, Okanagan Dentistry’s Dr. Evan Wiens has always been drawn to things where he could use his hands skillfully. In fact, that passion was a driving force when contemplating a career. “I wanted to find a field where I could use my hand skills to help make an impact in people’s lives,” he says. “Dentistry was a natural fit.”

he puts the patient first and really listens to their needs. And Dr. Bose-Roberts has great community ties and her way with children is absolutely incredible. They both have such a broad range of expertise and inspire me to be a better dentist.” Modesty aside, Evan’s already carved out his own reputation as one of Kelowna’s top dentists. His passion for putting patients first won him the Outstanding Student Leader Award for Ethics from the American College of Dentistry. And when he’s not in the office or with his family, Evan spends weekends as a student of the Kois Center in Seattle, one of North America’s most respected post graduate dental programs. The Center’s mandate is “advancing dentistry through science” and it’s a place where dentists can receive additional training beyond what they learned in school. Dr. Wiens is planning on graduating from the program this year and hopes to become a mentor there in 2019. Despite this busy schedule, all the dentists at Okanagan Dentistry still make time to volunteer whenever possible, usually at the Kelowna Gospel Mission charity dental clinic. “It can be difficult when you’re so busy with your own practice but there’s a huge need for this so we try to volunteer when we can. Without insurance, not everyone can afford the top treatments so we try to provide the best option for them and help people who truly need it.”

Dr. Wiens is proud to be part of the team at Okanagan Dentistry, working alongside his mentor Dr. Ian Leitch and Dr. Natashia Bose-Roberts. They’ve seen their practice grow by leaps and bounds over the past year and will be adding a fourth dentist, Dr. Iain Hart of Kelowna, to meet demand. When asked what the key to their success is, Evan deflects credit to his colleagues. “Dr. Leitch has a great reputation in Kelowna. He’s already been doing this for 35 years but still continues taking extensive training so he can do high end dental procedures right here at our office. In every situation

In fact, it’s that ability to change people’s lives that Evan finds most rewarding about the job. “People come in and don’t want to smile because of how their teeth look, but we can help them and give them confidence. That never gets old. It’s the best feeling in the world to see them walk out of our office smiling.” To find out how Dr. Evan Wiens and the rest of the team at Okanagan Dentistry can improve your smile and your life, visit www.okanagandentistry.com.

Before leaping straight to in vitro fertilization (which can be costly), they’ll offer a variety of TCM options that may aid in conception including acupuncture, lifestyle changes, herbal supplements, and even counselling to help you shed the stress and fears of infertility. No matter what, Dr. Pentland and his team will be your guide along the way. “We want you to know you’re not alone. We’re here to help you have a family.” When asked about Yinstill’s success, he can’t give enough credit to his wife Chantal, the co-founder, COO, and head of client experience for the company as well as the biggest Spence/YinTeam cheerleader around. “None of this would be possible without her,” he emphasizes.

Chinese Medicine (TCM) and acupuncture, Yinstill will be a place where women and couples facing reproductive health challenges can find knowledge, resources, and perhaps most importantly, hope, as they try to conceive. Dr. Pentland has been studying and practicing TCM for more than 20 years and has seen firsthand how well it can work with other infertility treatments. “Eastern, Western… I don’t advocate for either side. To me, they’re complementary. The end goal is to help someone have a baby. It’s not important how we get there. We just want them holding a child in their arms.”

But the greatest gift she’s given him is the chance to be a father. Dr. Pentland and Chantal had their own difficulties conceiving but have been blessed with three beautiful boys. “She’s such an amazing mom and wife. I can’t believe how lucky I am.” If you’re struggling to conceive and want to fulfill your dream of starting your own happy, healthy family, talk to Dr. Spence Pentland and his team at Yinstill Reproductive Wellness.   Yinstill Reproductive Wellness 513A Lawrence Ave 250.864.9353 office@yinstill.com | drspencepentland.com MINT Kelowna

hen you live in a region famous for its wine and everyone and their grandma seems to consider themselves an armchair sommelier, how can you make sure your expertise stands out? The staff are polite, professional, and offer a level of expertise you don’t normally find in a private liquor store. “Everyone is certified in one way or another,” explains Riki-Lynn. “It’s not just a job for them. It’s a culture. They have passion for what they do.” That passion is what makes shopping at Urban Liquor so engaging. In addition to a variety of hard to find Canadian and international wines, there’s also craft beer, spirits, and ciders as well as multiple people who are more than happy to answer your questions or make a recommendation or two. And if you’re more of a hands-on (the wineglass) learner, Urban Liquor even offers tutored tastings. It’s a place to learn free of some of the “stuffier” aspects that can intimidate wine newbies. “We’re working hard to debunk some of the stigma around wine culture and encourage people to try new things,” says Riki-Lynn. “We want people to ask questions and hopefully discover something they never would have tried before.”

Even before all the accreditations, she’d been on the sales side of the industry for years. Until then, you’ll just have to stop in and soak up all their expertise in person. Not that that’s a bad thing though. You might just find something a little different to sip on tonight. “If there’s something you’re looking for and you can’t find it anywhere else, chances are we have it.” And chances are they’ll be able to tell you all about it. I came across this loaf of dark, dense and scented pumpernickel loaf this week and I had to have it. This easy layered snack requires no oven time (yehaw for those that live in a sweaty climate like us), and comes together in about 15 minutes. A perfect snack for a hot summer night, or maybe a nice addition to a Sunday brunch. INGREDIENTS 3 peaches, quartered 2 tbsp butter 2 tbsp maple syrup 1 cup ricotta 1/8 tsp cinnamon / tsp nutmeg

2 tbsp honey, plus more for drizzled finish 3-4 figs, thinly sliced 5 slices pumpernickel bread, toasted 3 tbsp fresh basil, finely sliced zest and juice from 1 lemon

DIRECTIONS On medium heat, melt 2 tbsp butter in a heavy skillet. Cut and quarter 3 peaches and place in butter. Drizzle in maple syrup. Poach on medium heat, turning after about 8 minutes. Thinly slice figs and place in the side of the pan and cover in butter. Reduce heat to low. Combine lemon zest, juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, honey, finely chopped basil and ricotta in bowl. Toast 5 slices of pumpernickel bread and place on a tray. Spoon ricotta mixture onto toast and spread evenly. As a journeyman carpenter, Tyler literally built Stark Homes from the ground up. They currently have seven employees, plus work closely with a number of different sub-contractors. They recognize the benefits of working with a close-knit team. “I’ve been working with the same crew for almost a decade. It’s fantastic to be able to bounce ideas off each other and work together to solve any problems that come up. We really have something special with our employees and the sub-trades that we work with. This is the ideal dream team,” said Tyler. “I don’t ever take on more than I can handle. There really is a lot of junk furniture out there. I guess people just don’t notice.

w

e sell most of our best logs to Asian markets. They take the best cuts for themselves, run the rest through a chipper, and sell it back to us as furniture. Its really sad because 5 to10 years from now, most of that particle board ends up in our landfills. Junk. We take our most valuable resource and throw it in the dump after shipping it all over the globe. I think we can do better. I source 95% my wood fibre from North America, 80% of that from Canada. 60% of all the wood I use is harvested within a 500 kilometre radius. My local suppliers have actual airplane hangers full of catalogued Fraser Valley hardwoods. I can build anything: furniture, kitchens, custom builtins. I do all of the wood and metal fabrication out of my ever expanding shop in Summerland. If you can close your eyes and see it, give me a few months and you will be able to touch it.

This year Im most excited to launch a series of handcrafted chairs. Traditional joinery in black walnut paired with rich Minnesotan leather comprise a timeless one of a kind piece. The chair you were never allowed to sit in at your grandparents house, can now be in your living room. When you work with me not only do you get a bespoke piece of art that will never end up in a landfill, but you also get the opportunity to earn your money back, because like you, I shop locally. That way we both get to live here and have beautiful lives. I look forward to working with you.

FROM HERE TO MODERNITY Mid Century Modernism Today WITH BRIAN GILL AND KENDRA ZANGBELL-GILL OF ZANGBELL & GILL

Mid Century Modernism was a design movement that developed from 1933-1965. The term was coined then and is still used today to describe the use of sleek, paired down organic forms with a Scandinavian bent used in all facets of style including; furniture, ceramics, architecture & art. So why is a movement born nearly 100 years ago so popular today? We see the influence in commercials, movies, home improvement shows and even mainstream box stores. As our lives get busier and the spaces in which we live become smaller it has become essential to fill homes with things that we love and bring joy. So, Mid Century Modern design fulfills the feel good aspect and because this furniture came into being when spaces were smaller, particularly in Europe, the pieces generally have a smaller footprint. This furniture not only has a smaller footprint space wise but also environmentally.

our store we embrace the ethos of Transitional Style - which is the taking and blending from different cultures and eras to furnish your home in beauty. Traditional, Contemporary and Mid Century Modern will all sit side by side happily as long as you love each piece. Mix it up...style will always go with style!  Zangbell & Gill 990 Laurel Ave, Kelowna

250.878.8651 | zangbellandgill.com info@zangbellandgill.com |

As consumers, instead of purchasing disposable furniture we have the opportunity to invest in items that were hand crafted and made to last. Our greatest pleasure buying and selling vintage furniture is breathing back life and restoring these pieces to their former glory. Some of the materials used like teak & walnut are scarce now from deforestation which makes refinished pieces valuable & highly collectible. We feel that by bringing a few of these unique items into homes it adds authenticity and warmth. Mid Century Modern design is the perfect way to embrace history while maintaining modernity. This particular era is by no means the only one in which Zangbell & Gill curate. At MINT Kelowna

great outdoors. There are hundreds of kilometres of private trails to explore by foot or, if you like, on one of the dozen horses that call Montana Hill home. The horses are chosen for their temperament and Al’s happy to teach beginners and children how to ride so novice riders can enjoy the ranch life too. You can even bring your own horse if you prefer. In fact, it’s encouraged. “We know that the relationship between a horse and rider is a personal one and we love it when people bring their horses. We have plenty of room for them.”

“This is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time,” says Elaine. “We’re proud to be one of the only Canadian owned and operated ranches doing this kind of thing. We want people to have an amazing time here and go home with memories they’ll keep forever.”

With its mix of luxury and rustic charm, Montana Hill Guest Ranch is perfect for anyone looking to get away from it all and spend some quality time with their family in nature. And with rates starting at just $199 a night, it’s surprisingly affordable too.

Make no mistake. Elaine and Al aren’t a couple of newbies who’re doing this on a whim. Prior to purchasing and reopening Montana Hill Guest Ranch, they spent 20 years running a successful bed & breakfast in Victoria called The Prancing Horse before following their hearts to BC’s interior in 2016. Now, they’re ready to take care of your every need and have designed the ranch to be an intimate experience for guests. There are four private log cabins to rent (each with their own Vermont cast gas fireplace stove and hot tub) as well as a central lodge where you can play billiards, read a book by the stone fireplace, or indulge yourself with one of Elaine’s home cooked meals (her orange soufflé pancakes are to die for).

“We wanted to make it easier for families to come here over and over,” explain Elaine. “We didn’t want it to be a onetime special thing that you’re never able to go back to again. This is our dream and we want to share it with as many people as possible, as many times as possible.”

Of course, the Ranch is more than just a cozy place to stay. With hundreds of acres of land surrounded by pristine South Cariboo forests and some of the best hunting and fishing in BC, this is heaven for anyone who loves the

MAMAS.TV

The Dawn of a New Era BY CANDACE CHISHOLM

78

MINT Kelowna

The dawn of a new era is upon us all. Social media, and technology in general, has changed so much of how we understand things to operate, well, if you’re over 35 that is. However, as we all know from experience, what can be daunting, challenging and downright scary, can also open up new worlds of possibility. Such is the case with an aspiring new social enterprise, Mamas.TV.

M

amas.TV, which is launching in the Spring of 2018, is a soft landing spot for parents that feel that they are the only ones going through the rewarding, yet at times, gruelling sport of raising children. Parenting isn’t always an easy gig, so Mamas.TV wants to be there to discuss the difficult topics, educate with experts, laugh until you cry, cry until you laugh, and above all, celebrate all the successes along the way. With the online streaming process, channels such as health and beauty, inspiration, lifestyle, mamas making money, and weekly interviews, to name a few, will provide a wide array of subjects with varying points of view. A “voice of the village” if you will! Mamas.TV even has their very own handy mama, teaching amazing life skills that any homeowner will value! However, perhaps the most gratifying reason this enterprise was conceptualized, is to raise money for the charity Mamas for Mamas. In the charity world, it can be fairly competitive, with everyone vying for the same government dollar. Or, if you’re an organization like Mamas, you are grinding it out from event to event raising community cash. Either way, both can inhibit collaboration, not to mention exhaust the efforts of precious volunteers! Through various income streams, such as advertising, sponsorship of channels, subscriptions, a REALITY SHOW (yup, this one is a riot), and eventually its very own “Mama Market”, Mamas.TV will be giving back 50% of it’s net profits, with the intent to one day be a major supporter of Mamas for Mamas. The blessing for a business wanting to participate in this timely start up? Great marketing with a socially conscious component! Win win for the commerce world! Right now, as we speak, Mamas.TV is in the midst of a crowdfunding campaign, and we could use your help. With each dollar raised, this endeavour will march closer to the goal of producing quality content, exciting opportunities, and financial support for the most worthy of causes, the family unit. The team at Mamas.TV has graciously donated thousands of hours from filming, to editing, from marketing

to building because our belief is unwavering. We are so excited to share this labour of love with everyone, so please, share this love with everyone! Join the Mamas movement, and help us show that the sky is not the limit, because we’ve seen the footprints on the moon! THINK TRADE FIRST Supporting Growth in Local Small Businesses BY TRADE EXCHANGE CANADA

If you are an owner of a small business looking to improve your cash flow and market share, then Trade Exchange Canada (TEC) is for you. EC is a locally owned organization that encourages and supports growth in small businesses by promoting a shop local image, and by utilizing the growing trends of the sharing economy. Like Uber and Airbnb, Trade Exchange Canada thrives on ensuring the maximum value for your skills, goods, and services are obtained by connecting you with likeminded people looking to grow and support the little guy. This support system can be seen throughout the current TEC network of roughly 500 members varying from a self-employed eye lash technician to professional accounting and legal firms.

T

Through this network of small local businesses, situated mainly around the Okanagan Valley (with affiliates across Canada and the US), TEC has been able to create a tight nit community of reciprocation. With the daily marketing, monthly networking events, and constant referrals, TEC ensures that the network knows your business exists and promotes business amongst each another. To use an example; if you are the owner of a hair salon, needing a new website, where are you going to look? As a nonTEC member, you are probably going to head for Google to scope out a web developer with the lowest price in order to conserve your hard earned cash. BUT as a TEC member, you are going to utilize the already present network at your fingertips, find that web developer, pay in trade, conserve your cash and have comfort in knowing that you have not only supported local business,

Trade Exchange Canada can say with pride that by becoming part of their network you are allowing yourself access to the best tool available for small business. Being a part of the marketplace they have successfully created can do nothing but allow for growth, conserve cash, and to utilize your skills and goods and services to the full potential. If they don’t have you hooked yet, see what their members have to say! “Trade Exchange has been amazing in helping grow my business. It’s a huge network so connecting with other local businesses is easy and there is no shortage of places to spend your trade dollars. I would highly suggest joining if you want to build your business and share your talents with the community, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the response.” Tamara Robinson, GlaxayBomb Media

“I have been a Trade Exchange Canada Member for over 4 years now and I have made trade a foundational part of my business. Using your excess inventory or unbilled time this way is one of the most strategic and effective ways of reducing expenses and increasing your bottom line. Along with the ability to leverage your business with trade also comes the fantastic and invaluable Network of local business owners. Being a part of TEC has allowed me to reach out into their Network in a way I never would have been able to without them...” Samantha Milligan, Okanagan Media Group.   Trade Exchange Canada 748 Bernard Ave, Kelowna 250.717.0026 | tectrade.ca

ENTHUSIASTIC CHANGE MAKER How can I Create Positive Change In My Life? WITH

Amanda Zaal, Founder of Aim+Glow Author of the Enthusiastic Change Maker Planner

Creating change can feel complicated. However, pursuing change with a balanced approach can make all the difference. Simply choose daily actions using the 5 key components that all support one another for change.

Using all 5 key components might seem like a daunting task, but keeping it simple is the key. Set daily goals so small that it would feel silly if you didn’t accomplish them. The more you set yourself up for success, the more you feel capable of creating change in your life. When you couple simplicity with balance, one good thing leads to another and real change occurs. The Enthusiastic Change Maker Planner is the tool to help you keep track of the steps you are taking to create change. Dr. Gail Mathews, a psychology professor at Dominican University in California states people are 42% more likely to achieve their goals just by writing them down. Try writing down your simple daily plan using the 5 key components and begin to unleash the Enthusiastic Change Maker in you! To help organize your change the ECM Planner is available at www.aimandglow.com. When you focus on using all 5 key components in your life, you will start to feel incredible, however if you only support one or two, the results won’t be the same. This is because the body and the mind work together. We know the mind speaks to the body, but we are also learning the body too talks to the mind. 82
