You know who she is. That woman with the confident beauty that seems natural and effortless.
You're a REAL Beauty
She likely has a little help. Here are a few keys to authenticlooking, carefree beauty that will have people wondering what makes you glow! LIPS Plump lips are often associated with youthful beauty. But there’s more to it than just pumping up the volume. A good injector will properly balance proportions and highlight all your facial features. This may involve enhancing the cupid’s bow, lifting a curled upper lip, or correcting asymmetry.
EXPERIENCE MATTERS Every client requires a different amount of filler injected in a slightly different way. Experience and fine attention to detail is key, along with precise injecting techniques using micro-cannulas, which minimize the risk of bruising and swelling.
MAKE THE MOST OF IT To get the look you’re after, you really need great skin. Laser skin tightening, chemical peels, physician-grade facials, and professional skin care products will optimize your treatment.
NOW OWN IT! Carefree confidence is the final touch that will truly make your beauty glow!

THE HCG DIET
Is it Too Good to Be True? BY DR. CHELSEA GRONICK, ND
For anyone who’s ever wondered what to do to lose weight when they feel that they’ve tried everything possible to lose weight and nothing has worked, read on and keep an open mind.
T
he HCG Diet originated in the 1950’s by Dr Simeons. HCG stands for “human chorionic gonadotropin”, a hormone made by the placenta of a pregnant woman. It is widely used at high doses for fertility and hormone balance in men and women. Used in tiny amounts, along with a carefully planned very low calorie diet, HCG can help one lose a significant amount of weight, in a relatively short amount of time, in a healthy manner. The HCG Diet might just be your secret weight loss weapon. The HCG Diet is not without controversy. There are lovers, haters and skeptics. What I can say is that from my experience, I have seen the HCG Diet effectively help men and women lose a significant amount of weight quickly, and keep it off permanently. Make no mistake, it is truly the diet that results in weight loss, not the hormone it self. Giving the hormone without following the diet and the rest of the phases of the program is not effective. The hormone allows one to maintain a low calorie diet without burning off muscle and sending the body into starvation mode, prevents hunger while following a lower calorie diet, and helps to re-establish a new body weight “set point”. The benefits of a program like this reach far beyond just improved body composition and self esteem, it helps re-shape ones relationship with food and break food addictions, establish more mindfulness around food and nutrient intake, and lead to a healthier lifestyle.
16
MINT Kelowna
HCG is only available by prescription, as an injection and must be prescribed by a doctor. It should only be prescribed by a doctor knowledgeable about how to use HCG for weight loss purposes. Many ask about using HCG “drops” as they have heard about it from friends and family. In Canada, HCG drops are not legal and are not what Dr Simeon’s or other researchers have studied for weight loss. If health food stores are selling HCG drops, they are doing so without Health Canada’s permission and their claims are not substantiated by research. I only use the injectable form of HCG for my patients, as I do not trust any other sources. So you’re probably wondering, just how much weight could one lose following the HCG Diet. Typical results that I have seen with my patients on a 3 week program is 10 – 15 lb of weight loss, and on the 6 week program 25 – 40 lbs. Pretty impressive! I was initially skeptical of this style of program, however after doing my own research and seeing the results in my patients, I am confident that this program changes lives for the better. It truly makes my day to hear men and women wearing clothes that they had hiding at the back of their closet for years, or shopping for their first ever little-black-dress. HCG is an effective and safe weight loss strategy that can kick start your weight loss efforts and set the stage for a new, healthy weight and body!

Naturally Fuller Lips at Cerulean Medical Institute in Kelowna, BC BY DR. PRAVEN CHETTY, MD, CCFP, DPD, DAAAM
L
ip injections for lip enhancement and lip augmentation procedures are increasing year by year with our Okanagan clients requesting lip injections at younger ages than before. At Cerulean Medical Institute, we specialize in providing natural looking fuller or plumper lips by creating harmonious balance in proportions so that the lip matches the relative dimensions of the face. The key to beautiful naturally enhanced lips lie in the fundamental understanding and respect of the lip anatomy, structure and its relation to the rest of the face particularly the chin and the nose. Lip enhancement for beautifully natural looking plumper lips involves enhancing and defining important anatomical structures in and around the lips. These landmarks include the Cupid’s bow, the vermillion border, philtral columns, oral commissures and peri-oral lines. The stubborn peri-oral lines are often softened with precise lip injections thus rendering fuller natural looking lips that are able to bask in their enhanced state without being overshadowed by unwanted wrinkles often called smokers’ lines or “barcode” wrinkles. At Cerulean Medical Institute, we are able to achieve long lasting natural looking results using newer generation of advanced lip fillers like Juvederm, Teosyal & Belotero with meticulous placement of lip injections into the correct anatomical depths and planes. The added benefit of the newer generation of lip fillers used at our skin care clinic in Kelowna includes stimulating your skin’s innate collagen production or collagen neogenesis with longer lasting results. The before and after photos below illustrate natural looking fuller lips after lip filler by Dr. Praven Chetty.
BEFORE
AFTER
Lips like faces come in various shapes and sizes. No matter the shape or size of your lips, using advanced anatomical knowledge and lip injection techniques; we can enhance your lips so that you are left with naturally looking fuller lips. Call Cerulean Medical Institute on 778-760-5050 or via www.ceruleanmedical. com to book your Lip Enhancement treatment today. 20

SERENITY AESTHETICS: Amazing Results, Honest Service. BY JESSICA KUTOK PHOTOS BY ASHLEY GODIN PHOTOGRAPHY
Janice Lawson, owner of Serenity Aesthetics, started her business with a simple vision; to provide the best laser hair removal, advanced skin care treatments, and aesthetic services at fair prices. And since 2009 when Serenity Aesthetics opened its doors in West Kelowna, her goals haven’t changed. If anything, they’ve grown to a whole a new standard.
“
At Serenity, we believe in education,” says Janice. “We’re constantly upgrading our training, earning new certifications, educating you about our process, and helping you develop realistic expectations regarding your goals.” In an unregulated industry such as this one, it can be really hard to know who you can trust with something as personal as your own body. The team at Serenity makes it their mission to protect you from this lack of regulation which is why it’s important to point out that Janice is a Clinical/Para-Medical Aesthetician and a Certified Laser Specialist. “At Serenity, we’re so passionate about giving you the best possible results along with honest service and advice. We truly want you to feel safe, satisfied, and know exactly what to expect every step of the way.” Aside from education and safety, delivering outstanding results is also a part of the formula at Serenity which is

why they’re very particular on the products they use for their treatments. “For our laser hair removal, we have two separate lasers to safely treat both light and dark skin types. We’re proud to be using the Alexandrite Laser for lighter skin and the ND Yag Laser for darker skin. At Serenity, there’s a service for everyone and every skin type,” explains Janice. “If it’s tattoo removal you’re after, we can use our Q-Switch Laser to safely remove those as well.” “We want people to feel great in their own skin” says Janice. “If you’re someone who suffers from frustrating problems like ingrown hairs, investing in laser hair removal can be life changing and actually saves you GROUP PHOTO BY JESSICA ZAIS, L-R COLLEEN BURK, JANICE LAWSON, ROBYN JONES, HAVEN LYNCH

money long-term because you won’t be spending on costly waxing appointments, razors, and shave cream. We’ll remove up to 80-90% of the hair on your body and leave your skin feeling silky smooth. It really is a life changing experience.” Sounds amazing, right? With results like those, you’ll be wondering why you didn’t pay Serenity a visit a long time ago. While smooth, hair-free skin is nice, so are the skin treatments at Serenity. From Micro-Needling and Microdermabrasion, to Chemical Peels, Skin Tightening and Aqua-Dermabrasion, you’ll leave your treatment appointment feeling nothing short of fabulous.
If it’s jaw-dropping results, safety, and variety you want, then put this magazine down or close out your browser, and call Janice at Serenity Aesthetics to book your 100% free consultation. Your skin will thank you later! SPECIAL OFFER Just for reading this, Janice is offering you a choice of 6 Basic Bikini laser hair removal sessions for only $219 or 6 Brazilian laser hair removal sessions for only $339.

CLEAN IS BEAUTIFUL WITH Nikki Hunter, owner
THE GREEN VANITY
It’s no secret that many of our personal care and beauty products are full of ingredients that are dangerous for our health and our planets ability to sustain life. It’s also no secret that many brands are still choosing to use unethical practices that exploit woman, children and animals. For many of us, this knowledge is overwhelming as we walk the isles of beauty departments and look at the piles of products we have at home that we haven’t, and may never, use. Feeling overwhelmed can no longer be an excuse for apathy. The clean beauty movement has removed the barriers that prevented us from making the transition. “Today, the “clean” banner is carried by a small (for now) but vocal group of individual brands, dedicated retailers, platforms and activists that have taken it upon themselves to define and uphold the strict guidelines around clean products, from personal care and cosmetics to household cleaning items.”
3. Establish your hard lines of what practices, ingredients and social expectations you will and won’t tolerate from brands and their product. Then stick to them. If a company can’t (or won’t) ensure you their products are safe and hold to your values, tell them that, and move on. 4. Your choices DO have an impact. You are NOT just one person. Reach to your community to find like-minded people to help you with resources, safe spaces and inspiration to push forward.
- SARAH BROWN , BUSINESS OF FASHION
STAY ON TRACK BY REMEMBERING: 1. It may take a few years to clean up your makeup bag and vanity. Even with a good plan, many of my clients require up to 3 years. It’s not sustainable for us all to throw everything away and start over. 2. There is no shame. We are all learning together. Knowing better and doing better is hard! Being accountable for the choices you made before you knew better is part of the process.

WINE TASTES THE SAME TO EVERYONE WITH Riki-Lynn Boettcher
URBAN LIQUOR
Everyone always talks about wine tastings and how they want to learn to be able to “taste” wine. The truth is that we don’t in fact “taste wine”, we smell wine…we feel wine….. All great wines have a sense of place, for example a juicy, fruit-driven glass of Cabernet sauvignon takes me to Napa Valley and an austerely acidic, petrel-laden glass of Riesling takes me to the Mosel in Germany, while the earthy, saddlesocks, barnyard, and game of a Cotes du Rhone take me to the south of France. In the same sense, a glass of rich, smokey Malbec is reminiscent of summer BBQ’s with my family, and a fruit bowl Okanagan pinot gris brings me poolside with my best gals. When asked by customers, clients and friends, “what wine should I buy”, I always ask, “With whom, what and where will you be consuming it?” While there is something to be said for quality and its correlation to price, you don’t have to dip into your inheritance to have a memorable experience with wine. “What’s important is that you choose a good quality wine, a wine that is Authentic in origin and that you enjoy this moment in time and the splendor that the wine brings. Stay open minded and try to hold on to something from every glass.

WAKE UP WITH A SMILE at Cora Breakfast and Lunch BY JESSICA KUTOK PHOTOS BY ASHLEY GODIN
DOUGLAS CHAN, OWNER.
Decorated in hues as bright and colourful as the mountainous heaps of fruit they’re famous for, it’s easy to see why people are drawn to Cora Breakfast and Lunch in Kelowna. There’s a coziness to the restaurant that makes you feel as though you’re at your grandma’s and she’s decided to cook up something special for you. About the only way Cora Breakfast and Lunch could be homier was if each table came with its own smiling elderly woman in an apron, lovingly telling you to eat more. hen it comes to the food itself, everything is wonderfully wholesome. In addition to traditional breakfast fare like waffles, omelettes, and French toast, you’ll also find fresh twists on old favourites. Cora’s signature Eggs Ben et Dictine is a standout way to start your day with feature flavours like Asparagus and Swiss cheese, Tomatoes, bacon, & green onions, and the always crowd pleasing Smoked salmon.
W
For those that can’t seem to make it in before the brunching hour, there’s also a varied lunch menu with an ample selection of classic and creative sandwiches, burgers and more, including the popular Italian Crêpe for Roberto. Vegetarians and gluten-sensitive people will be happy to know they’ve got lunch and breakfast options to choose from as well. Of course, we can’t forget the fruit! Cora has kitchen staff whose only job is to carve fruit and it shows. Plates are bright, beautiful, and carefully arranged with mounds of fresh fruit. Even the dishes on the kids’ menu look like works of art. Speaking of kids, the children’s menu is packed full of fun and healthy options that the pickiest of eaters will love. Having a family friendly environment was important to owner and operator Douglas Chan. A 17 year veteran of the restaurant industry, Chan left behind the big city life in Toronto and came to the beautiful city of Kelowna. Day in, 48

day out, he can be found in the restaurant greeting guests, chatting with regulars, making sure things run smoothly, and simply having a great time with his employees. For some, this would be a job. For Chan, running a restaurant is a calling. As one staff member described him, “He’s the heart and soul of the restaurant and puts in everything he has.” It’s obvious Chan loves what he does but his passion doesn’t stop at the restaurant. Since he took over, Cora Breakfast and Lunch has offered their support to several local organizations including Kelowna Dance and Performing Arts and the Kelowna Rockets. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and in a city packed with restaurants trying to outdo one another with overly exotic options, it’s nice to know there’s a place that keeps things simple. The outstanding food and cozy atmosphere make Cora Breakfast and Lunch a must to start any day of the week. See for yourself and start your day off right! CLEAN EATING
Butter Chicken BY BECKY PARISOTT, WWW.WHITEWOP.COM
This butter chicken fits completely into a clean eating diet! What? Ya, you read that right. It's fresh and super super super flavorful, and clean as a whistle! It also gets tossed into a crockpot, so you can set it and forget it. The dish is two steps in total, and then you transfer it over to the crockpot to slow cook for a couple of hours and fill your house with the rich and spicy smells of the Eastern world! Throw on a pot this weekend and feed the family. Enjoy!
INGREDIENTS 1 tbsp 4 cloves 1 1 (6oz) 1 can 2 tbsp
olive oil garlic, minced sweet onion, diced organic tomato paste coconut milk coconut flour
1 tbsp 1 tsp 1/ tsp 2 2 tbsp 4-5 pinch
garam masala curry powder chili powder minced ginger puree chicken breasts, cubed salt to taste, if desired
GARNISH Cilantro for finish before serving.
DIRECTIONS In a large sauce pan on medium heat, sauté the garlic onions and ginger in the olive oil until translucent. Add in the spices, tomato paste, coconut milk and flour until thickened. (don’t use light coconut milk, you need full fat for richness in this dish). Turn down the heat and stir occasionally. While your sauce is simmering, cube your chicken breasts, and place them on the bottom of your slow cooker. Transfer sauce into slow cooker and stir well until chicken is fully covered. Cook on low for 5 hours. Serve with chopped cilantro fresh on top of basmati rice. Oh, and don’t forget the naan bread! MINT Kelowna

10 THINGS
TO KNOW DURING A HOME RENOVATION BY JILLIAN HARRIS EDITED BY MINT TEAM
5. REVIEW YOUR INVOICES
Not too long ago I shared a blog with you that listed 15 things you need to know BEFORE a home renovation ‌ today I’m back with more tips for you, but this time around I’m sharing things you need to know DURING a home renovation! These are a few little things Justin and I learned from others and a few of them we learned ourselves ‌ the hard way! LOL! 1. HOLD BACK 10% Always hold back at least 10% from your contractor until you’re 100% happy and all deficiencies are taken care of, that way if something has gone wrong or hasn’t been fixed, it will need to be corrected prior to full payment. 2. WARRANTY LETTERS Ask for warranty letters from your contractor and subcontractors for your home renovation, these letters outline how long their workmanship and materials are guaranteed for ‌ if something fails within this period of time, they are required to fix it. 3. VERIFY YOUR CONTRACTOR IS PAYING YOUR SUBCONTRACTORS Make sure to ask for a Statutory Declaration of Progress Payment Distribution letter. This letter serves as confirmation that your contractor is paying your subcontractors. This is REALLY important because you could pay your contractor in full and they could take off to Mexico and may not pay your subcontractors which would result in them putting a lien on your house and you could end up double paying! 4. OCCUPANCY LETTER Make sure you get an occupancy permit before you move in, you MUST have this to stay there ‌ the city needs to make sure that everything in your home renovation is up to code and that things are working properly BEFORE you move in.
52
MINT Kelowna
I never took the time I should have to do this during our home renovation because I was so busy but I would highly suggest reviewing your invoices every time and look out for any discrepancies, if you find some make SURE to bring them up BEFORE you pay, it’s very difficult to question something after you pay and later down the road! 6. PUT UP NEST CAMS If you can, I would recommend putting up Nest Cams in your home so you can keep an eye on the property when you’re not there. They also come in handy if there is a problem, you can go back to the footage and review anything you need. 7. TAKE PHOTOS Once a day or even as little as once a week, it’s a good idea to walk around the site and take photos of EVERYTHING before your house gets drywalled. Later down the road, if there is a problem, like a leak, you can go back to those photos are see where the issue may be coming from and what’s inside of your walls! 8. ASK YOUR CONTRACTOR LOTS OF QUESTIONS Ever heard of the phrase. there’s no such thing as a stupid question?! Welp. It’s true. Make sure to walk through your home and the site with your contractor and ask as MANY questions as possible, more information is ALWAYS better than not enough! 9. COMMUNICATE VIA EMAIL Try to communicate via email as MUCH as you can, that way everything is tracked! If something seems wrong with your home renovation or different than you asked, you can always refer to your emails to verify! 10. INVEST IN WINE Yup that’s right ‌ you simply can’t pull off a full blown reno without vino ‌ AKA the “problem solverâ€? đ&#x;˜‚đ&#x;˜‚đ&#x;˜‚đ&#x;˜‚

BRIGGS ON HOMES: Small Team Approach, High-Touch Service BY JESSICA KUTOK
PHOTOS BY ASHLEY GODIN PHOTOGRAPHY
Jaime Briggs has been in real estate since she was five years old. Yes, you read that right. Five. Years. Old. ou see, when Jaime was young, her Dad was a REALTOR®, and on the way to parks and play dates, it wasn’t uncommon for her father to bring along the family to open houses, home viewings, and, of course, closings. As inquiring children do, many questions were asked and the passion for real estate was instilled, which inevitably led her into this fast-paced, competitive industry many years later.
Y
It’s no surprise she’s been rocking it for the last twelve years as a professional real estate agent. “In 2015, I was ranked #9 REALTOR® for Coldwell Banker Canada, and I’m in the top 2% of Coldwell Banker International. It’s awkward to toot my own horn but that kind of recognition is a big deal in this industry,” says Jaime. “But ultimately it’s my amazing clients I get to work with that keeps me going every day!” I don’t think it’s awkward at all. There’s no shame in being proud of your accomplishments as a successful woman in the real estate industry. Kudos, Jaime! With that growth, expansion is necessary. Enter in her husband, Leon Gaba, the newest addition to Briggs On Homes. Leon brings plenty of business experience to the team. In fact, he owned his own successful company for 19 years so he also knows a thing or two about taking exceptional care of his clients while doing business the right way.

SELLING YOUR HOME IN 2018? The spring home selling season is right around the corner. Here’s how you can start now to make sure your home is ready to list.
1 2 3 4
HAVE US DO A WALKTHROUGH - We’ll point out money saving tips to maximize your home’s appeal, so you don’t end up spending cash in the wrong spots. EXTERIOR PHOTOS WITHOUT SNOW - Gather up high resolution summer photos of your yard, pool, garden or exterior areas. GET A PRE-LISTING INSPECTION – An inspection will identify everything that needs fixing, so you can schedule the work before the sale. It’ll save you plenty of headaches later! GET RID OF THE CLUTTER - Plan to tackle one room each weekend. Sort everything into four piles: give away, throw away, sell, and keep. Be ruthless.
5
MAKE A SCHEDULE – Make a list of everything needing to be done to get your home ready for sale. Set mid-March as your “go-to-market” date, put them on a calendar working backwards and start knocking them out!
In addition to Jaime and Leon, the Briggs Team has an office assistant, professional photographer/videographer and other back end support team members to further enhance the customer experience. “The benefit of working with a smaller real estate team is that we know each and every one of our clients, we know our listings inside and out, and we can focus on a hightouch, high-service approach so our clients have the best real estate experience!” explains Jaime. 54

If you have ever believed in wishes coming true, then the story of Mamas for Mamas and their extraordinary journey will solidify that feeling. This “little charity that could” has been pushing the boundaries, both figuratively and literally for 3 years. What started as a Facebook page in the spring of 2014, has now expanded to 11,800 members in Kelowna, and 23 chapters, with more on the way, throughout Canada and soon to be the United States.

T
his last week, Mamas for Mamas has seen the communities of Kelowna, Vancouver, the Island and many others, reach out and share their skills, their purchasing power and their labour to create a space that would make the most decorating savvy swoon. Lead by the incomparable Jillian Harris and the Sticks and Stones Design Group, these charitable champions rolled up their sleeves to show that when a small (albeit mighty) group of people come together pure magic happens! Mamas for Mamas is a registered charity that is addressing the landscape of poverty through innovative approaches to socioeconomic barriers faced by struggling families. They celebrate the success, the struggles and the bravery of parenthood by providing a “village” like mentality, understanding that we are all in the same boat…there is no rule book! Sometimes we need a hand up, and Mamas for Mamas provides that, and also provides programs through which we can adjust our mindset. Poverty is sometimes
generational, and can get entangled in our threaded belief systems. Getting under those mind sets by creating a pro active approach helps families to help themselves! And speaking of a hand up, just 1 short year ago , Jillian Harris was introduced to Mamas for Mamas when she was looking for a charity to donate her son’s items too. She soon fell in love with the process, and opened her heart, and her social capital. Without leaders like Jillian Harris and Sticks and Stones Design Group, and all the incredible people who came out, the road to success for Mamas for Mamas would be a lot windier. They wish to thank each and every member of this project, along with the countless others who donate their time, money, energy and love to their cause. It really does take a village, and Kelowna has proven it’s the village to do just that! For more information on the Reno visit jillianharris.com to read her latest blog. The journey begins on the outskirts of Penticton as you follow the graceful curves of Naramata Road, beneath the warm sunshine, aside the breathtaking vineyard and lake views you can’t help but leave the hectic urban life behind.
In 1979, the property was purchased by Vera and Bohumir Klokocka who had recently immigrated to the Okanagan Valley from Czechoslovakia. Vera had a dream. In 1984 she planted the first of Hillside’s estate vineyards. The grapevines thrived in the gravelly soil and warm Okanagan sunshine and Vera’s dream took shape. By 1989, Hillside became one of the first Farmgate wineries in the Okanagan Valley as

Kick back in the adjoining Bistro situated perfectly in sunlight as you soak in the shimmering Okanagan Lake. Hillside offers not only beautiful scenery and exceptional wine and food, but also a fascinating pioneer history unique from the other wineries in the region.
Vera lobbied toward changing policy for small wineries at that time. She was instrumental in shaping the B.C. wine industry as we know it today. Hillside remains true to its heritage by producing wines made with 100 percent Naramata Bench grapes. At the helm of this small-batch and hand crafted approach to wine making is gifted winemaker Kathy Malone. “It has been our commitment since our inception to produce hand-crafted, naturally fruit-forward, well-balanced wines that represent the true character of the grapes. Our uniquely designed winery allows us to ferment and age the wine in many small batches to maintain the varietal character and integrity of each grape type and vineyard,” says Kathy. While this process can be challenging, the hard working folks at Hillside are bent to stay the course, regardless of effort. Jody Schwindt, sales and marketing manager, is also firmly planted in this commitment. “Kathy has a such a great understanding of the unique conditions of the Naramata Bench, which allows us to ‘own our dirt’ and express our local terroir.”
“Our guests will find we have a unique approach to life out here. It is a slower way of being, a life meant to be savoured. Our food is gourmet, but made for sharing. We want our guests to relax, get lost in the region and allow their minds to go back in time,” she says. It is a sensory experience being onsite, a feeling, and an emotional draw that makes you want to be part of something that has withstood time. It is a tribute to the pioneering spirit of the woman who came to Canada and had a vision. Loosen your tie, leave your heels at home and satisfy a longing you didn’t even know you had; Hillside Winery & Bistro is a gracious winery built on respect for its people and the land beneath your feet. WINING & DINING The Art of Wine Pairing WITH
Michael McCoy CWS Wine Educator, C.C. Jentsch Cellars
Choosing a wine to go with a dish can be a complex task. Ensuring a wine doesn’t overpower your food or vise versa is key and takes practice. White and red blends often offer a wider flavour profile and work with a variety of foods so give you a place to start. Some ideas: C.C. Jentsch Cellars “The Chase” 2013 a mature red blend, is super food friendly and works well with casual favourites like burgers and meatloaf and can step up to pair with a roast beef dinner or steak. C.C. Jentsch Cellars “The Quest” 2016 a white blend of unoaked chardonnay, viognier and gewürztraminer pairs well with a vegetable frittata with fresh fruit cocktail.
FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN UPPING THEIR WINE PAIRING GAME I RECOMMEND THESE BOOKS:
C.C. Jentsch Cellars Cabernet Merlot 2016 is a light body red that goes well with pizza, pasta, charcuterie, even grilled cheese sandwiches (Like a multi tiered artisan bread, multi cheese delight) with bacon, caramelized onions and fig puree!
Wine and Food Pairing for Dummies – John Szabo
Drink Progressively – Hadley and TJ Douglas What to Drink With What You Eat – Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page
Everyone has a personal set of flavour preferences and different levels of flavour perception so the more wine you taste and the more food combinations you try the better. A dish’s weight (from fat, protein and sugar), heat (from spice & seasoning), and the intensity of flavour and texture of foods are best matched up with wines of similar weight and intensity. Big flavour in a dish matches best with a bold, full bodied wine. Winter weather leads to hearty, meals and C.C. Jentsch Cellars offers a delicious Syrah and a selection of Small Lot Series wines including Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Yum!! 70

WARNING – May Cause Ice Cream Cravings! BY BRANDI PARNELL
PHOTOS JEFFREY ELLIOTT
”Literally every single day someone stops me to talk about their connection to Tickleberry’s. Whenever my dad is here, he loves to catch up too, and is always around to help out,” says Kelsey and while she speaks, I drift away to a land of handmade waffle cones and chocolate rivers made for dipping. But she isn’t the only one who thinks more clearly after a mouthful of sugar. It’s mandatory for all Tickleberry’s staff to not only love sugar, they must also love having fun at work. “I’ll be honest, I’m more creative after a couple scoops of ice cream,” she laughs.
illie Wonka had nothing on Dale and Jen Hoy, gold miners turned local jam makers; in 1988, they moved their family from Whitehorse to Okanagan Falls and expanded their part-time jam-making venture to a full-time business. Two years later, their golden ticket materialized into a business that made more than jam; they opened a business dedicated to make people smile.
W
In the spring of 1990, The Hoy’s opened Tickleberry’s - at the present location - on Highway 97 just outside Okanagan Falls. 27 years later, their daughter, Kelsey & son Aaron who grew up in the home and business, has taken over. “It has grown immensely since my parents first started out. I’m now in my 8th season and I absolutely love it,” she says in sugary prose. “I couldn’t imagine working anywhere else. We have the best customers, many of whom have been coming here since my parents first opened; and let’s face it, we eat sweet treats all day – what could be better than that?!” The customers who frequent Tickleberry’s do so for many reasons. Some come to peruse the gift shop; others do so because it’s a family tradition. Some went to school with the Hoy kids and now want to induct their children; others pride themselves on supporting local. But all do so regularly and because Tickleberry’s has the best selection of sweets in the land.

Tickleberry’s serves on average 3,000 cones per day; no surprise considering they have over 75 flavours including their own, which is also made in-house, a craft they learned at Penn State University. “One of the best things about ice cream is that is a tasty time machine. Ice cream can take a person back to a place or age. Everyone has a favourite flavour from traditional Maple Walnut to Bubble Gum, Mint Chocolate Chip or Sea Salt Caramel.” Some of their own flavours include Lime in the Coconut, Whiskey Caramel Crunch and Unicorn Fart, which looks as fun as it sounds and tastes even better. And, all of their inclusions such as brownies, banana bread and their cookies are made right in the kitchen at Tickleberry’s. “If there’s one thing my parent’s taught me, it’s to never pass up dessert.” A life lesson many of us could learn from. With sugar in her veins and sweetness in the way she approaches life, one cannot help but smile. Tickleberry’s is everything you’ve extracted from childhood and everything you never want to forget. They even have a canine cone for dogs. To draw out your inner child, treat someone you love or go back to a place that felt as they it were rolled in chocolate, dipped in sprinkles and topped with a smile, stop by Tickleberry’s today. LET’S BRING EVERYONE TOGETHER BY JENNIFER ROBINSON, GUERARD’S FURNITURE DECORATOR/SALES ASSOCIATE PHOTOS BY JEFFREY ELLIOTT
With autumn just around the corner it’s time to cozy up your home by creating a comfortable space where everyone can come together and relax comfortably. P
illows, pillows and more pillows! Toss cushions are good way of not only adding colour to your home but are also great for introducing texture and keeping things fresh. For the cooler season ahead think about picking up some toss cushions that are soft to the touch. Yes, this may make it a little tougher to leave the couch on a blustery day, but at least you’ll stay warm and comfortable. Accessories are key! Consider adding some extra accessories to your space this fall. This can be anything from a simple textured weave/braided basket, a layered candle display, or even indoor plants. Keep in mind accessories don’t have to cost a lot and are a great way to change up your space from season to season. Bring the outside in! A big thing to keep in mind when decorating for fall is bringing nature into your home. This could be as simple as adding a jute rug, a beautiful fall flower arrangement or introducing
some distressed wood into your space. This will not only add texture and warmth to your living space but also some interest and style reflective of your personality. Fall Colours! It’s time to bring in autumn colours to cozy up your home and I am not just talking boring browns. There are plenty of warm fall colours that can really transform your home for the cooler season. Try warm blues, plums and cherry reds! If this is a little out of your comfort zone go with some more muted tones such as vanilla or a warm beige. Wall art provides all the finishing touches a room desperately needs and deserves. Art has the ability to transform a bare bland space into something so much more by adding texture, colour, shapes and a focal point. Wall art is a great way to introduce your personality and can be easily changed out when you’ve had enough of it. Don’t be afraid of choosing art that may be out of the ordinary for you. Have some fun!

PLAN, MANAGE AND SUCCEED with Banka & Company, CPA BY JESSICA KUTOK

Most people know a thing or two about the role of an accountant. For example, if you have a lot of money, you should get an accountant. If you’re the CEO of a megacorporation, you should get an accountant. And, if you’re starting your own small business, then you should most definitely get an accountant. ecently, I had the pleasure of speaking with Gabriele Banka, DAcc., BApplBA, P.Mgr., C.Mgr., CPA, CGA at a local practice called Banka & Company, CPA. We had an enlightening conversation focused on what a day in the life of Banka & Company, CPA looks like, what kind of clients they take on, and how Accountants do much more than just manage our money.
R
“If someone is in the process of starting up their own small business, they should hold off on incorporating before it makes sense,” explains Gabriele. “Incorporating costs a lot of money and if they see us first, we can create a plan to move towards that in the future rather than right away. Extensive planning and knowing all of the different options before jumping into big decisions is a great method for achieving success.” Once you have clients and maybe even employees, bookkeeping is another integral part of running a successful business venture. “I’m certified in Advanced QuickBooks Online and I’m Sage One Certified,” says Gabriele. “If you’re a business owner and are trying to do all of your own payroll and inventory, that’s where you can rely on us to do that part of the job for you without having to worry. With the programs we use, you can see results right there online so you’re still involved with your finances.” When I asked Gabriele what Banka & Company, CPA’s mission statement is, you could tell the words were important to her.

We can set up software and interview new staff all while planning for an end goal. We love doing a great job for our clients.” Gabriele has been doing this for over 30 years, and along the way, she’s dedicated herself to a commitment of lifelong learning while establishing a high-level of trust with both her clients and team members. ESTATE PLANNING 101 WITH CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER
Kristi Ames, CFP
When people hear “Estate Planning”, they think it is for the ultra-rich. The truth is, Estate Planning applies to almost everyone. Warren Buffett famously noted that, when it comes to inheritances, the perfect amount to leave children is enough so that they feel they can do anything, but not so much that they can do nothing. Sounds like a plan for success. The only problem is, approximately 48% of Canadians don’t have a plan at all. And, with family dynamics becoming more complex with multiple marriages and children, the lack of a plan is sure to create problems.
SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER FOR ESTATE PLANNING 101: PUT A PROPER WILL IN PLACE A well-crafted Will is the cornerstone to your estate plan. This ensures your assets are managed by a trusteed individual and distributed a desired, minor children are placed with the ideal guardian & special bequests are noted
TFSA TRICK The Tax-Free Savings account allows a named beneficiary which allows a tax-free rollover to an adult of your choosing, not necessarily a spouse or child
GET IT DONE Don’t just think about putting together an estate plan – get it done. Make sure your professional team, which could include an investment adviser, tax practitioner or a lawyer, clearly understands your objectives. Then review your Will every two to five years.
UPDATE YOUR BENEFICIARIES Review pensions, registered accounts (RRSP, RRIF, TFSA etc.), group benefits & life insurance policies. Update names as life evolves with birth, marriage, divorce & death
REVIEW THE OPTIONS FOR JOINT OWNERSHIP This allows non-registered investments to automatically rollover on the first death If joint ownership is not an option, consider using Segregated Funds. This is an investment within an insurance policy that allows for a named beneficiary which will expedite the transfer of funds and bypass probate in the event of a death 80

t suddenly feels like electric vehicles are everywhere. Rather than rushing to sell every oil company and buy lithium, we think it’s important to reject “conventional wisdom” and think analytically about the implications should electric vehicles become mainstream. By the end of 2016, there were an estimated two million electric vehicles worldwide, roughly 0.2% of the vehicle population. More importantly, consumers purchased about 760,000 electric vehicles in 2016, equivalent to just 3% of new cars. Most of these cars were sold in China, where electric vehicle prices have fallen below US$20,000 and government has prioritized their adoption, but many European nations have similarly begun setting aggressive targets for complete elimination of new combustion-engine cars. Major automakers have announced new electric and hybrid models over the next several years, while outsiders like Dyson have also invested heavily in electric vehicle platforms. Electric vehicles will likely gain market share as new models become available, but it will take many years to
impact overall oil consumption. Vehicles last a long time between replacement intervals. Commercial vehicles, which consume more fuel, appear likely to lag passenger cars in the transition to electric. Furthermore, transportation accounts for just 40% of current oil consumption. All of this suggests that oil consumption is unlikely to be facing imminent collapse. The shift to electric vehicles will, however, have more profound impacts on other sectors. Demand for battery commodities like nickel and cobalt would be expected to soar, while component demand for fuel injectors, exhaust systems, engines and radiators will likely be eroded. It remains unclear whether incumbent automakers will succumb to upstarts or dominate the new electric platforms. While identifying investment risks and opportunities is important, there are many variables that will determine how the electric vehicle trend plays out over the long term. Keeping a critical eye on where things are going rather than jumping to conclusions is prudent with any new and exciting innovation.
