From Our Editor

BRANDI PARNELL Hello Revelstoke. It’s a pleasure to meet you. Over the past few months, we have feverishly built this issue, one page at a time. It is filled with tales of hard work and tenacity, beauty and wonder. It is a collection of local businesses and on trend editorial. It is inspiring, yet laid back. It is quaint, friendly and created for every aspect of your life. One common thread I encountered as I interviewed, questioned and wrote through these past several weeks was a warm community spirit. It seems as though the majestic natural surroundings have not gone unnoticed. I commend you for that. Mint is a group of powerful women who work through our days and weeks aspiring to be our best selves. We push one another, raise the bar and come back to base camp each morning, looking up towards the summit. I have a feeling we were made for each other. STEP 1 Apply a volumizing product to damp or dry hair. We love Aveda’s Volumizing Tonic. STEP 2 Use your blowdryer on medium heat to activate product, and set it into your hair. Manipulate your roots in gravity defying directions - always ensure the nozzle of your blow dryer is pointed from root to end down the hair shaft. STEP 3 Section hair from side to side in 4 sections. Use a curling wand such as this 25mm Aria Beauty wand. Wrap the hair around the barrel & hold long enough to heat the hair. Tip: Different directions will add texture, while larger sections will reduce amount of curl. STEP 4 When working with top and final section, take note of which direction you want the hair to lay as well as where you want the part to be. Wrap hair accordingly. STEP 5 Dry Shampoo is a ton of fun! Aveda makes this awesome non-aerosol version. Apply at roots from front to back.

7

STEP 6 Massage that dry shampoo in as if you were working up a lather. You can literally see your strands expand! STEP 7 Finger comb through your new waves and add a few finishing touches of a light hair spray such as Aveda Air Control.

TIP:

STEP 1 Select a highlight product & makeup brush. Serenity is using Pure Anada Sheer Highlight Powder in Lustrous, and the Pure Anada Contour Brush.

STEP 2 Generously apply highlight product through T Zone, along the bridge of your nose, underneath outer eyebrow & below your eyes. Apply a lighter amount to the space a bit above the jawline, but well below the cheekbone. You will also want a small amount to place in the mid chin area

STEP 3 Select a contour product such as the one shown here - Pure Anada Contour Powder in Alluring.

STEP 4 Use contour product to shade around the hair line, under jaw bone & along jawline. Tip: Apply a light amount of contour product just under your lower lip to plump out the lips and create a fuller effect.

STEP 5 Blend, Blend, Blend away! This step is just as important as selecting the correct products. You will need a good quality brush & lots of patience. We love the Pure Anada Mini Kabuki brush! Start with circular motions, and end in sweeping motions to ensure all lines are fully blended out.

It helps to take a step back and stop focusing on one area at a time to really see what’s happening. Happy Blending!

HOW TO:

‘BLANKET SCARF’ BY DIANE BULL OF STYLE TREND CLOTHIERS

The Bunch Up STEP ONE Start with your blanket scarf completely open & unfolded. Then simply bunch it up.

STEP TWO Bring the scarf around your neck, keeping it super short on one end and long on the other.

STEP THREE: Loop the long end around your neck once + tuck the end under the loop. Adjust as necessary. Style it with jeans + your favorite tee + ankle booties. The look is classic, but the extra large size of the scarf keeps it modern. Perfect for everyday wear.

STEP TWO Fold your blanket scarf in half diagonally, creating a triangle. Don’t worry about making it perfect - it should be a bit of a sloppy triangle.

STEP THREE: Wrap the long edge around your shoulders. Adjust as necessary & leave open. Style it with jeans + a cozy sweater + ankle booties. Finish the look with a felt hat!

BECAUSE BEING IN STYLE, IS NEVER OFF TREND BY BRANDI PARNELL PHOTOS BY SARAH MICKEL PHOTOGRAPHY

Most people know a great wardrobe can be built off of a few quality basics. You need that perfect pair of jeans and a great scarf. A white V-neck is very versatile as is a plaid button down shirt. Add a black dress for her, or a neutral sweater for him, as well as some chic accessories, and you have the making of a closet that will carry you from day to night, casual Sunday to an evening out.

W

ith an openness to everything on trend, Diane Bull, owner of Style Trend Clothiers assures you, they have something for everybody.

“Revelstoke is a small community, which means our regular shoppers are anywhere from 16 to 60. From super casual, jeans and a tee, to more formal, dresses and suits, we’ve got it all for both men and women.”

Many of the companies are Canadian owned and have head offices here in Canada. All of their designers, as well as sales, office, & distribution staff are employed here.” Mindful of ways they can innovate and evolve, Diane says, “You have to be reasonable too. At the end of the day, we have to do what works best for our customer.”

Acutely aware of what their local customers are on the hunt for, they choose quality lines in the latest trends, but also stock the shop with staple brands such as RVCA, Billabong, Quiksilver and more. They gravitate towards localized lines like Gentle Fawn which is out of BC, Dex whose head office is in Montreal, as well as Kersh out of Toronto, to name a few. In fact, around 70 per cent of their store is full of items from Canadian owned companies, which is really cool.

Hot items in the store this season are almost anything from Gentle Fawn out of Victoria, known for their great fabrics, unique pieces and strong personality, and joggers from Montreal brand Kuwalla Tee have been a great new additions for the guys. “We specialize in having both men’s and women’s denim, tees, and sweaters. Yes, it snows a ton here, but that doesn’t mean you want to wear your ski coat in your day-to-day life. We sell more fashionable winter wear, designed to be more representative of your of personal style.”

“We are always thinking of our brand partners and making choices that support the Canadian economy.

And best of all, they have a staff almost as diverse as their selection, a group of passionate souls who express themselves CENTRE STEVE AND DIANE BULL

uniquely. From super feminine to fashion forward, from those who push the line, to Diane herself, who admits to being more casual, more relaxed. Style Trend can be found creating styled shoots or modeling the latest trends on social media, but also around town. “We love to engage with our favourite customers, see what they’re up to and how they’re wearing their purchases. They inspire us to be open to new options, new expressions.” To connect with Style Trend or be inspired to change or enhance your look this season, stop by or shop online today.

BEAUTY COMES IN ALL SIZES at Bette’s Underthings and Clothing. BY BRANDI PARNELL PHOTOS SARAH MICKEL

You can tell a lot about a woman, or man for that matter, by their intimates; it’s the foundation of our wardrobe, the first pieces of clothing we put on our bodies each day. Do you match your bras to your panties, your socks to your underwear? Do you wear any at all? 20

MINT Revelstoke

American actress, Paz de la Huerta said, “If I collect anything, it’s lingerie.” Bette’s Underthings is a sexy shop filled with silks and lace, but also attracts male shoppers and younger women seeking special sizes. She also sells socks and swimwear. As of January, Bette’s will offer the PrimaDonna Swimwear line for women who want to feel as good in a suit as they do in their bras.

ette’s Underthings and Clothing is a lingerie store with a professional approach to everything from wearing the proper-fitting bra to swimwear, nursing tanks, as well as a men’s line of underwear called My Package; a Canadian owned company whose revolutionary patented KeyHole Comfort Technology™ creates the best and most comfortable underwear experience for men.

B

Opened in 2013, Yvette Pendergast had always had an entrepreneurial spirit. When she recognized her calling and saw an opening in the marketplace, she went for it, “I just kept saying this is my destiny.” Her destiny was to open a business that catered to women who wanted more than a mall store. “There is a vast misconception in the world about how a bra should fit. Many women misunderstand the scalability of underthings. By offering free bra fittings and smart products, such as My Package, we can help our customers look and feel supported,” says Yvette.

This holiday season, be sure to stop in for accessories that will hold up through dinner parties and black tie events. Heading out for New Years in a cocktail dress? Bette’s can help with strapless dress accessories. And, they have a complete stock of holiday gift ideas including cozy pyjamas, robes, kimonos, Bedroom Athletics slippers, pretty, or warm and cozy sleepwear. Of course, gift certificates are always the perfect gift. To find your fit, stop by Bette’s Underthings and Clothing today. “We Support Your Desires.”

“Teaching women how bras are supposed to fit is really rewarding. Once women understand how a bra should fit, they feel comfortable, which breeds confidence. I’ve had many women assume that body and cup size directly correlate. That’s simply not true. Not every woman or bra size is created equal. In fact, a 30D is going to look a lot different than a 40D. They are completely different cup sizes.” Years ago, many stores only carried sizes as large as DD. Bette’s sells lingerie lines in stock from A-J, but they can come up to a size L, which makes a DD seem not as big nowadays. In fact, the average North American bra size is 34DD. Yet, regardless of the size, Yvette believes there it’s more important for us to rid misconceptions, not attach our selfconfidence to any one size and feel beautiful in our bodies. “It’s really hard watching women beat themselves up. I try to encourage them to embrace their physical selves. After all, beauty comes in all sizes,” she says, a motto she has hanging in the store.

FIT IN 20: A GUIDE TO STAYING ON TRACK DURING YOUR TRAVELS In an era where fitness and nutrition are becoming just as important as a morning cup of Joe, many of us are left scrambling at the thought of how we can stay on track during a holiday or business trip.

24

MINT Revelstoke

Let’s be honest, the majority of people plan to gain a few pounds while on the road. Research supports this too, with studies concluding that people bulk-up the most during holidays and vacations.

Try performing these 5 simple exercises, one after the next, in reps of 10-20 for a total of 20 minutes. Yes, in just 20 minutes you’ll be working up a sweat! 1. BODY WEIGHT SQUAT This exercise works the glutes, hamstrings, and quadriceps. To start stand with your feet positioned slightly wider than your hips. Look directly in front of you, and place your hands on your hips. Stand straight up, and keep your weight in the heals. Focus on pushing your knees out, as they should never come inside the big toe. Take a deep breath, push your hips back, chest up, and slowly start to bend at the knee, until your hip joint is lower than your knee – this is the bottom of your squat. To come up, keep your core tight, breathe out, driving through the heels as your knees straighten.

3. SHOULDER TAPS This exercise works the deltoids, abdominals, and triceps. Start in the high plank position. Keep one hand firmly planted on the ground and raise the opposing hand to gently ‘tap’ the opposite shoulder. Next return your hand to the ground, and repeat to the other side.

4. MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS This is a great exercise for elevating your heart rate by  working numerous muscle groups simultaneously. Start in the high plank position.

2. PUSH UPS Push ups target the arms, chest and core. For beginners, I recommend dropping the knees if needed. To start, keep your arms straight, directly under your chest, and shoulder width apart. Core tight, back flat, glutes and hamstrings engaged.

Lift your right leg off the floor, raising your knee as close as possible to your chest. Return it back to the starting plank position, and switch legs.

5. TRICEPS DIPS You will need a ledge to perform it – a chair or edge or the bed will work great!

Take a deep breath and slowly begin to lower your body until your chest is just hovering over the floor. Keep your shoulder blades retracted, and elbows tucked into your sides.

Sit on the chair, grasping your hands over the ledge, right next to your hips. Slide your bum off the chair, to just in front of the ledge, knees slightly bent.

Exhale as you ‘push up’ to the starting position – by straightening your elbows.

Take a deep breath and bend at the elbows, allowing your body to ‘dip’ towards the ground without touching it.

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF ADVENTURE AND GETTING OUTSIDE BY TALIA CAMOZZI, RCC, MA

People who live in or love Revelstoke generally already know about the importance of joy and adventure, and getting out into the great outdoors. But would it surprise you to know that adventure is more of a mindset than an actual event? And getting outside to build a snowman and make snow angels can be just as soothing to your soul as powder face shots and dropping cliffs?

THIS PAGE AND OPPOSITE TOP, LINDSAY CRAIG BY WILLIAM EATON

ne of my best days skiing ended up being with one of the biggest girl posses I’ve ever had the pleasure of skiing with. We had women with us who you’d recognize from spreads in Powder Magazine and women who decided that was the day they would try skiing instead of snowboarding. We were a motley crew, and what I remember most about that day was laughing, the sun shining and not knowing what was going to happen in the next minute or the next run. This is one of the biggest keys to an adventurous day: not knowing exactly how things will go.

O

The other keys to a good adventure are having a reason for engaging in your adventure, being totally committed, having great companionship and having some tolerance for things to not go as planned.

Oh, and take your adventure outside! No matter what you’re doing outside the benefits are clear and amazing. Some of my favourites are improved short term memory, stress relief, reduced inflammation, improved concentration, increased immunity and as a counsellor, my favourite is improved mental health. When you aim for a peaceful, happy adventure in the great outdoors, you are doing your mind, body and soul a favour. In Revelstoke, we value all three. The peaceful adventurer in me welcomes the peaceful adventurer in you to love and appreciate our snow draped town and mountains.

It is easy to imagine a mountaintop adventure with these keys, but most of us need to reset our mindset to get adventure in our own backyards. After all, life can get pretty boring if the only time there is adventure is when there is adrenaline pumping through our veins. In my experience, this is where we get confused: adrenaline does not equal adventure. Adrenaline feels good because it can decrease pain, heighten all of your senses, increase strength and give you a boost of energy. But when we depend on these side effects of adrenaline to signal to us we are happy and having an adventure we can run into a problem as the feeling of happiness and elation gets more and more elusive as we have to take more and more risks to get the same rush. Some great words of advice I try to follow are from Buddhist Monk, Thich Nhat Hanh, “Many people think excitement is happiness . . . but when you are excited, you are not peaceful. True happiness is based on peace.” So here is my challenge to you, try creating an adventure for yourself this winter. Aim for an adventure that leaves you happy and peaceful. You may need to adjust your mindset for this new kind of adventure, but I can promise it’s just as rewarding as an adrenaline packed adventure. And it is definitely more sustainable. BLONDE,BROWN OR STOUT

Thomas Jefferson said, “Beer, if drunk in moderation, softens the temper, cheers the spirit and promotes health.” Jefferson would be astounded with the choice of brands, breweries and styles of beer today. In fact, one could truly soften his temper by taking a beer flight and sampling several options from ales to lagers, ambers to darks. Beer is a perfect accompaniment to a warm fire and great company. Today it is fruit infused, spice suffused and even imbued with sweetness. While it could be argued, beer is far less sophisticated than its grapey counterpart, it’s gaining traction in the craft market, opening the bottleneck for beer lovers.

While beers can be complex in flavour, a general rule when it comes to mouthfeel and body is to liken lagers to white wine and ales as the red wine equivalent. Beer can also be paired with food and its best to begin a meal with a lighter beer. Heavier beers can be paired with sweeter bites or after a meal. Beer glasses can enhance your experience and the tasty beverage is best served at 6 degrees Celsius up here in Canada.

Here is an introductory look at the drink we affectionately turn to when sitting at the bottom of the hill, at the end of a long workweek, and of course when the festivities call.

If you’re interested in learning more about local breweries and best-in-class beers, you might want to check out Mt. Begbie Brewery. BC is rich in more than mountains and adventure, there is an abundance of local spirits, wine, of course and craft breweries to enjoy.

Warning: Editor recommends enjoying a cold one along with the read.

Remember to practice moderation and cheers the spirit!

As winter sneaks in and our days seem shorter, many people retreat to the comforts of their home to create a haven from the colder weather, a place to warm their souls. Believe it or not, it’s easy to create a warm and inviting space in your home for the winter. Here are some insights on how you can warm up your space.

• Good lighting is key. I love using candlelight. Not only is it inexpensive, but also it adds a layer of warmth and romance to your space. Add some fairy lights to a vase. Choose warm whites so the light isn’t too stark. Place not only on tables, but on the floor too! • Bring in paint colours in warm tones, which can make a significant impact to your space. If that’s not an option, add art or photography in fall colours. Reds, browns, gold and oranges bring a cozy feeling to your home. • Add wood. Wood always brings warmth to any room. Wood furniture, floors, an accent wall or even wood stacked next to your fireplace. Natural elements add a natural openness that makes you feel at ease. • Area rugs feel warm under foot and help add another layer to your bedroom, dining or living room. A vibrant warm toned wool rug, sheepskins next to a bed or a soft flokai will do the trick. Warm up your feet and your ambiance. • Layer up! As soon as our days get colder, a faux fur throw layered on the sofa looks inviting and invites

snuggling up on the couch. Plus it’s great way to warm up in the morning over coffee before the heat kicks in. • Lastly, down-filled toss cushions always finish off any space. Change them out with the seasons; think burnt orange or red velvet. If you’re lucky enough to have a wood-burning fireplace, fire it up. After all it is the ultimate luxury for a cozy night. If by chance yours isn’t working, light large pillar candles in various sizes as a fire substitute. Stay warm this winter, cozy up your space and bring on the snow! Looking for help with your home or business interior space? Let VH Design coordinate paint, flooring, finishes, fixtures, furniture selection and more. Access to trade only pricing on quality custom upholstered furniture, fabrics, window coverings and rugs. Choose your next piece from the comfort of your own home. The VH Design eye for detail can assist you with building new or looking for a change in your existing space.

ZZZZEN BY BRANDI PARNELL

There is an Irish proverb that states, “A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor’s book.” With self-made PHDs in loving life, we’re here to help you improve yours by adding more Zen to your bedroom. Green thumb or not, perhaps it’s time to invest in a new plant. After all, leafy greens are no slouch to awesome; they also oxygenate your home, filter the air you breathe and can help you sleep more soundly.

42

MINT Revelstoke

Adding a touch of greenery to your coveted space is not only appealing to the eyes, these living organisms interact with your body, mind and space to improve the quality of your life. So follow doctor’s orders, laugh until your belly hurts and get your zzz’s. Here are five houseplants to enhance your bedroom and your rest. LAVENDER Lavender is one essential oil everyone should keep on hand. It can aide in easing allergy symptoms, is known for its relaxing effects on the body and can help with many minor skin irritations. When it comes to rest, its scent can release soothing, sedating effects. ALOE The soothing gel from the inside of an aloe vera plant can increase healing, act as a natural after shave and help detoxify the air in any room of your home. Sleeping in a room free from dust and air pollutants brings you one step closer to an uninterrupted slumber. JASMINE These flowery vines exude a beautiful aroma in any room. Jasmine has long been an ingredient found in many beauty products. Used in lotion, it can soothe dryness and ease irritating, itchy skin. But there’s more, its fragrant aroma can be beneficial for anyone whose mind tends to run over. Leave the wandering to Jasmine’s vines and put your brain to bed. SNAKE PLANT Pay no attention to its name. The plant is easy to care for, readily accessible and inexpensive. While its healing properties may not be as vast as the aforementioned, what’s great about this plant is that it emits oxygen at night while consuming carbon dioxide – something we do naturally while breathing – while we sleep. And as you know by now, better air quality leads a better night’s sleep. You don’t need to be a Feng Shui master to enhance your sleep. Tonight before crawling into bed, take inventory of ways you can improve your sleep space and get more rest. Ditch the TV and opt for a more natural approach to your Zen den. Sweet dreams. WHAT A RIDE! BY ROB ALFORD, EDITED BY BRANDI PARNELL

Backcountry snowmobiling is an awesome experience! And, there’s no better place to try it out than right here at home. Revelstoke is famous all over the world for its snowmobiling; so much so, people from as far away as Norway and Russia travel here to see the mountains and enjoy the ride. Most of the locals have sleds, many have ski and snowboard racks, and use them to get untracked or just shred up some powder on their sleds.

PHOTO OF JEREMY HANKE TAKEN BY ROB ALFORD

o if you’re looking for the perfect spot, Boulder and Frisby Ridge have well-maintained and groomed trails that afford access to some unique views of the surrounding mountains. Traverse to high tree line and you’ll find there are a couple of sweet cabins, looked after by the Revelstoke Snowmobile Club. On a clear day, with good visibility, you can travel beyond the cabins to the alpine and take advantage of the views and terrain up top. If it’s a snowy day with bad visibility, the area is famous for its awesome tree riding.

A WORD OF CAUTION Keep in mind this is the backcountry; there are neither ski patrols nor avalanche control. I always travel with my avalanche safety gear and I’ve been trained on how to use it properly. I also make sure to have a buddy who I can count on to watch my back when in the backcountry. Taking an avalanche course and understanding what terrain is avalanche prone is very important. If you’re new to snowmobiling or just want someone to safely show you some sweet pow stashes, check out Great Canadian Tours

or Revelstoke snowmobile tours, both have great guides who know the area inside and out.

ripping by me. I immediately realized there was a better way to get more pow turns in quicker. I like to call a snowmobile my version of a helicopter because basically you would need a helicopter to get where these machines will take you.

Keep in mind, snowmobiling is a lot of work - especially in deep powder. If you get the machine stuck, which happens to everyone by the way, you can burn up a lot of energy fast when trying to maneuver a heavy 500lb machine. I would say, it’s well worth the effort though! As you get better at riding, you can access some completely untracked mountains and have the place all to yourself. I’ve been riding sleds for 20 years now. I originally bought one to get some pow turns in on my downhill skis. I remember ski touring from the early morning trying to get some fresh tracks in, when a group of sledders went

Of course it takes a lot of practice to get good enough at riding these machines to get to the best spots. Todays new models are way easier to learn on as they are designed lighter for the mountains. They’re equipped with plenty of power and come with direct injection. Take it from me; it’s a ton of fun and an adventure, especially when travelling into new areas that few people have possibly ever seen! Ride safe and see you in the back country! MINT Revelstoke

With the snowline creeping down the mountainside, the excitement is growing in Revelstoke. It’s a seasonal transformation that happens every year, but is undeniable in its draw. You can’t help but stare up at the thick white line and wonder how deep it is up there and how good the winter might become. I never knew I loved winter as much as I did until I moved here. can distinctly remember the powder turn that changed my life. I was ski touring up on Corbin’s pass in 1999, I had linked up a few amazing turns and then was flying over a steep roll. The snow started flowing over me, it worked its way up my waist, over my shoulders and then I was engulfed by it. I was laughing and choking on this face shot that never ended. It was the deepest, lightest snow I had ever experienced, and I knew I would never be happier than skiing in these mountains. Before that weightless moment ended, I decided I was going to spend the rest of my life here.

I

Since then I have had 16 years of incredible exploration around the Columbia Mountains. Standing on top of each new summit, I look out into a sea of other mountains I hope to climb. It has been the most rewarding place in the world to ski. I have traveled extensively and sampled worldwide, and I can guarantee that there is no place on earth like Revelstoke. What continues to amazes me is the diversity of adventures that happen throughout the Columbia mountains, its not just a paradise for backcountry skiers. Regardless of modes of adventure, each person is seeking that same feeling of freedom, the one you had as a child. And most are finding it.

Snowmobilers are ripping up the Boulder Mountain glades. Skiers and snowboarders are shredding Revelstoke Mountain Resort. Nordic skiers are sliding around our lit up trails; there is endless adventures for those who seek it. And, not all adventures have to be adrenaline filled ones either. There are trails to be hiked, paths to wander, dog walks to be had. It’s the truth. This place is a winter wonderland. Period. It is that picturesque town with snow-laden trees, snow banks higher than cars, snowflakes falling slowly through the evening light. It is a place where kids are encouraged to throw snowballs, where all the quintessential winter scenes that define the perfect mountain town unfold. The snowline will creep down to where snow wars begin. We will all struggle with our daily shoveling, complaining when the ordeal becomes too much. But the complaints will be lighthearted since we all love this beautiful town and the activities that come along. As for me, I will be continually searching out and recreating that amazing turn that brought me to this special place. Happy snow season.

PARADISE FOUND BY BRANDI PARNELL

One can never be bored by powder skiing because it is a special gift of the relationship between earth and sky. It only comes in sufficient amounts in particular places, at certain times on this earth; it lasts only a limited amount of time before sun and wind changes it. People devote their whole lives to it for the pleasure of being so purely played by gravity and snow, Dolores LaChapelle.

nown to dedicated skiers as powder paradise, 150 kilometers north of Revelstoke might be arguably some of the best heli-skiing in the world. Located high above daily life, with spectacular views of the Selkirk, Monashee and Rocky Mountains, sits a luxury lodge created to provide skiers and snowboarders alike the experience of a lifetime.

K

“Our lodge is located exactly where the three mountain ranges meet; each one has a different geographic profile, offering a very diverse tenure of terrain in our backyard,” says Izzy Lynch, sales and marketing manager, “it’s where our guests leave the world behind to float through our massive 300,000-acre playground.” Mica prides itself on its four-to-one guest to guide ratio or fourto-two guest to guide ratio programs; its one-to-one staff to guest ratio at the lodge and its 20-guest maximum accommodation occupancy, so that every need is met. The intimate, tailored experience is what often leaves skiers proclaiming they’ve had the time of their lives. “You don’t have to be an expert skier to visit Mica. We recommend our skiing for intermediate level to advanced skiers who want to immerse themselves in bowls, glaciers and tree skiing. If you like skiing pillows, Mica is incredible. And, we customize every trip so that our skiers dictate exactly what kind of experience unfolds. If they are a really hard charging crew or a more mellow group, we adapt according to the type of experience they are looking for.” Imagine arriving in a powder kingdom with three of your best friends, where the sky is endless and your guides are the best in the industry. Imagine finding the most beautiful spot on the mountain, summit or ridge top, with 360 degree views of the most incredible terrain you could ever imagine. Now close your eyes and envision flying or floating down fresh powder right up to a waiting helicopter. That’s Mica. “I’ve traveled all over the world to ski, and believe Mica is the epicenter of backcountry skiing,” says Izzy. And after a mind-blowing day, the chopper will deliver you back to the lodge where you can kick back and relax in unsurpassed comfort and style. Where the chefs are Red Seal trained and food is anything but ordinary. Where the vibe is chill, but the amenities five-star.

“We built the lodge five years ago. It’s 15,000 sq. ft. with minimum guest occupancy and maximum experience. And every bit of it is catered to you, including available Cat Skiing in the event of inclement weather.” “The operation is a super high-end product, but the atmosphere is very casual, like family. Many of our guests have been coming for several years in a row now. It’s cool, like seeing old friends once a year. And, our guests feel like they’re part of something awesome too.” If you are a skier, you want to go to Mica. Izzy goes on to say, “We live and work for the skiing but stay in an amazing piece of architecture built to house skiers living out their dreams; we serve Rocky Mountain inspired cuisine in the most incredible setting imaginable, with every comfort.” Operation begins on December 9th, for the season. Don’t be disappointed; call today to book your spot or get your name on the priority list for next year.

THE

NEST

Written by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney BY BRANDI PARNELL

Being our first issue here in the mountains, these pages are brimming with joy. Especially as we near the holidays, there is more cheer and more family than most other times of the year. And so it seems appropriate our first book review is centered on family and specifically, the relationships amongst siblings. This book would make a wonderful gift, a work of fiction, and a debut novel. The Nest, by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney, is a tale of the inner workings of the Plumb family, its drama and the dysfunctional dynamics. In fact, I’ve heard people describe the characters as disturbing. As for this reader, I find them pretty normal when it comes to kin; every family has its fair share of issues and the aftermath that ensures post holiday dinner. I believe our darker sides, or shadows if you will, are what make us even more relatable and more real. The Nest does a spectacular job of working in many major issues facing humanity. From greed to addiction, ‘the nest’ is a reference to a joint trust fund, which brings to the forefront of a family, many imbalances. And while it has been said good intentions are closely linked to a life spent in the underworld, these four siblings Melody, Beatrice, Jack and Leo, hope to solve many of their self-inflicted problems with cash. The novel is well written, warm and humorous. Brought together by death,

these family members must not only face one another’s weaknesses but also, old resentments and present-day truths. Our paths in life leave quite the trail and those in The Nest lead right back to the power of family, the possibilities of kinship, the innate desire to connect as well as lean on one another, and if possible, trek out of bounds when life gets too messy. I have a feeling the world of fiction is just getting to know D’Aprix Sweeney and her spot-on ability to bring characters to life in the most humble of ways. Family ties are never really broken; they are a platform for our insecurities and a host to our triumphs. Our traditions formed in families are ultimately what we crave and at times, what we wish to eradicate from our lives. This book is the perfect read, après ski with a glass of Merlot and a scratch pad. It is enjoyable and thought provoking. Enjoy!
