THE HEALING POWER of Revelstoke

BY TALIA CAMOZZI, RCC, MA

Being the fifth generation of my family from Revelstoke, it is safe to say that for my family there is something special about this mountain town nestled between the Selkirk and Monashee mountain ranges.

A

s I think about my family who has come before me and why we continually choose Revelstoke as home, I realize that it is because in this town and in this community healing abounds. Revelstoke can have the distinct feeling of being both friend and powerful healer, and it is definitely part of what turns many visitors into long-time locals. For many visitors, just saying the word Revelstoke evokes a vision of snow capped peaks, winter adventures, and a wonderland draped in snow. But like many great outdoor destinations, Revelstoke comes alive and brings a new kind of healing medicine in the warmer summer months. I have memories of getting my hands dirty to plant a garden with my grandparents, great grandma, and great-great grandfather. We’d watch as summer progressed our tomatoes, beans, apricots, and other fruits and vegetables ripening into delicious treats throughout the summer. Being a part of a family that loved being in tune with nature, planting, and harvesting has given me a love of being a part of the natural cycles of the world. I still watch my grandparents harvest from their garden and host anyone who pops by during the summer for some healthy food, good conversation, and soul filling laughs. Sometimes the secrets to life are shared over shelling peas or shucking corn, but more often than not it is simply soothing to my soul

20

MINT Revelstoke

to slow down and be a part of the natural rhythms of life. Revelstoke is full of octogenarians and beyond just like my grandparents who will teach you the secrets to a life well lived if you stop long enough to pay attention. It’s not just the gardening though. The invitation Revelstoke always gives us in the summer to come enjoy the outdoors is what’s kept so many of my family young and healthy despite the years creeping on. Health, wellness, and longevity of course is not found in the best grown tomato or a walk along the Illecillewaet River on the Greenbelt. It’s found in a variety of practices, and in a general way of life alongside the moments of excellence and days that the very best stories are made of. Just like the crisp, glacier fed lakes that surround us, just like the network of trails that entice us, and just like the wildflowers that shine their beauty and healing scents up to soothe us, Revelstoke is filled with wisdom and healing from our Elders who’ve been here long before us. They know how to live a life sparkling with effervescence, delightful secrets, and beauty beyond words. There is a world inside those bones that have called Revelstoke home for longer than most of us can remember that comes from a life chosen to be lived in one of the most beautiful, healing places in the world.

HELPING YOUR YOUNG

ATHLETE SUCCEED BY MINT MAGAZINE STAFF PHOTO BY SARAH MICKEL PHOTOGRAPHY

22

MINT Revelstoke

Led by coaches Steve Bull, Jesse Anchikoski, and Brodie Buhler, the Revelstoke Jr Grizzlies claim the Bantam Tier 4 Provincial Championship for the 2016/2017 season. NOURISH & HYDRATE For young athletes, diet is the most important thing to consider. Your kids need to eat a proper and balanced diet - low in fat, with a moderate amount of lean protein (chicken, cheese, eggs, yogurt) and high in complex carbohydrates (green veggies, oatmeal, pasta, potatoes). For all athletes, a key part of a proper diet is staying wellhydrated during and after a game. People place way too much emphasis on energy and sports drinks, when nice cool water will work just fine - and it’s even preferable in most cases.

STRETCH IT OUT Yoga helps with breathing, flexibility, strength, confidence, energy, balance, concentration, endurance, as well as with injury prevention. Proper yoga instruction teaches body mechanics and enhances body awareness and helps players learn how to harness their breathing and focus on the present. Being able to visualize the next shot in basketball, hit in football, or shot in hockey can help improve their game. Yoga teaches players how to slow down, regenerate from their strenuous workouts and relax. With the intense pressure to do well in school and sports, most kids don’t take the time to slow things down and reap the benefits of their hard work.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING In general, the more fit your son or daughter is, the less likely they are to suffer from injury while playing sports. The best way to keep your athlete in shape is to never let him or her get out of shape. Make sure they’re active all year-round, and don’t rely on sports to keep your kid fit. The best practice is to exercise to play sports, not always play sports as exercise. I highly recommend professional guidance for your young athlete when working on their strength and conditioning, young athletes often do more harm than good while ‘hitting the gym’ on their own by not understanding what their young bodies are capable and not capable of.

HAVE SOME FUN Something often overlooked by parents and young athletes is the importance of setting some time aside to just have some fun. This doesn’t mean I’m recommending them sitting in front of a screen for the day, but a day off that includes a bike ride, a swim at your local lake or pool, or even just a game of frisby or catch with friends and family will do great things for your son or daughter’s mindset as well as give their young bodies an opportunity to rest while still keeping them moving and in the fresh air this summer.

BOOTY BARRE BY REBECCA MARCHILDON

PHOTOS BY KERI KNAPP PHOTOGRAPHY

Maybe you’ve been to one kind of bar in Revelstoke, but have you experienced a barre class yet? If not, you don’t know what you’re missing!

T

he barre trend has really heated up over the last few years and it’s no surprise, as this oneof-a-kind workout is not only fun but extremely effective. Women, and even men, are gathering at barre studios everywhere for a different kind of night out. It’s hard to take the smile off your face as you challenge your body to complete movements it isn’t very used to doing. Unless of course, you come from a professional dance and skating background like local barre instructor, Nina Greshner, who says she started teaching because she wanted to bring something new to the community. “There was no other class that combines ballet, yoga,

26

MINT Revelstoke

Pilates and dance in such a beautiful package. I love how energizing the class can make you feel, even at the most sluggish of times, movement and music will always do it for me!” The benefits to barre classes are endless, the small and very controlled isometric movements reduce pressure on your tendons, ligaments, joints and spine, so there is always less risk of injury than a typical strength training workout. As Nina points out, perhaps the most visible benefit for the ladies is “of course, a tight, round tush! And just as important,” she continues, “It is crucial to keep building long, lean muscles while improving posture and flexibility.” These benefits are also what differentiate barre from most other forms of fitness classes. The tiny movements used to perform the exercises require you to contract

specific muscle groups while keeping others still. “This can be very challenging and requires some attention to detail, but if you invest some time in the practice you’ll start to see progress,” says Nina. Many people are afraid to try barre for the first time, worried it’s only for the rhythmically-inclined, but this couldn’t be further from the truth! Part of the fun is challenging yourself and having a laugh as you do it. Everyone is there to have fun, nobody is judging one another. Barre is first and foremost about getting out of the house to have a good time and a great workout. Nina explains, “Number one, you don’t need to be a dancer or ballerina to take part, that’s the misconception. But hey, if you want to wear leg warmers and a leotard by all means, giver! Whether it is your first or fifteenth class, there are always modifications or challenges for you! It’s a very welcoming class that will leave you feeling energized and aligned. It’s a great low-impact option for people of all ages.”

So if you’re looking for a fun activity to do on your own or with your girlfriends, see what all the craze is about and try a different kind of barre! The bonus is that you’ll improve your posture, gain muscle definition, lose a little weight, increase flexibility and reduce stress. What could possibly be bad about that? Not to mention, women at any fitness level can sign up for a class!

LIGHTEN UP

BY VICKI HEMMINGSON

PHOTOS COURTESY VH DESIGN & WAYFAIR.CA

As we prepare for the sun filled, summer days ahead, do you also lighten up inside your home? We have some great suggestions on how you can accomplish this, while spending next to nothing, and giving your home a fresh, summer vibe.

B

ring the outdoors in! Head out to your garden and cut some greenery or fresh flowers and throw them in some water to place on your mantel, dining room table, desk, or nightstand to help liven up your space. Pick up a new indoor plant and place it inside a light coloured, woven basket to add some texture and a tropical feel.

If you’re looking for instant gratification, de-cluttering can lighten your load in more ways than one! Simplify those tabletops, counters, and nightstands to give your space a lighter look. Pieces that are dark and visually heavy can be stored away until fall and you will find that this will give your space a much more open, airy feel.

A tip for an easy and inexpensive hint of summer is to buy a few new toss cushions to throw on your sofa or bed. Stripes, pastels, or tropical hues will give your home an infusion of the colours you’ll find blooming outside. You can also roll up your area rugs and put them away until it starts to get colder again. Exposing your floors can instantly give your room a more casual and relaxed feel.

Looking for a bigger impact? A fresh coat of paint in a light colour can instantly make a room look brighter. It’s the most dramatic bang for your buck if you’re wanting change. A piece of wood furniture gets a new life and dark, dated cabinets can transform your kitchen when painted out white.

Have an accent chair or your sofa slip-covered in a heavy white cotton fabric for the season. Not only will this lighten up the look of your space, but it’s also easy to remove and wash, and will give longevity to your upholstered furniture. We suggest doing something similar in the bedroom, where simple white sheets and a new white duvet cover will not only elevate the feel of your space, but your room will also be looking cool on a hot summer’s night.

Let there be light! Placing an oversized mirror in the room will reflect light from a window, opening up your space. Use this trick in an entry way or in your bedroom with a large, full length version leaned against the wall, as it is both functional and illuminating. Enjoy a light filled summer Revelstoke!

SELLING YOUR HOME

3 Important things to look for in a Real Estate Agent WITH REALTOR®

Tara Sutherland of Royal LePage Revelstoke

Finding a trustworthy and effective real estate agent to represent your interests is one of the most important aspects of selling your home. Here are three critical things to look for in a real estate agent before you hire one.

Tara Sutherland

1) CREATIVE USE OF TECHNOLOGY

Creative Use of Technology - Any real estate agent that’s worth trusting your listing to will have a helpful and intuitive website as well as listing your home on all of the major online real estate search platforms. Using social media to market their listings is also a resourceful tool as the vast majority of buyers are using online searches to locate potential properties. An eager community of social media followers they can share your listing and reach a wider audience of buyers. 2) RELIABLE REFERENCES

Reliable References - There’s no better way to determine the talent of a real estate agent than to hear about them directly from clients they’ve already worked with. Ask any agent you’re considering hiring if they would connect you with clients they’ve made sales for in the past. Any reputable agent will have no problem doing this for you. When you speak with these past clients, bring up any questions or concerns you may have about the sales process and the agent themselves. Finding an agent whom you have a great rapport with can make the selling process a smoother process. 3) DETAILED PLAN

A Detailed Plan - You should never hesitate to ask a real estate agent for specifics about their marketing plan or the process of selling a home. There’s no level of detail that they shouldn’t be willing to explain to you. Ask your agent exactly how they will market your home, who they will market it to and how they will keep you updated on the progress they’re

making. Establish a clearly defined way to communicate with them, so that you know you’ll always be able to get in touch when you have additional thoughts or concerns. By keeping these things in mind, you’ll ensure that you find the best possible real estate agent for your home sale. Having the right agent on your side will provide you with peace of mind during the oftentimes stressful sales process and give you the best chance of selling your home quickly and at the price you desire. An emphasis on the importance of honesty and integrity as well creative solution oriented thinking, is how Tara likes to deal with her clients and do business. Her passion for the outdoors, her love of the mountains and desire for a more balanced lifestyle brought her to Revelstoke just like so many others. In the winter you will find her snowboarding, in the summer it’s biking and climbing, year round enjoying the community she has grown to love. Her knowledge of the local community gives her the edge to provide a transparent, honest and sincere real estate experience

RIDE GUIDE BY TOURISM REVELSTOKE ITINERARY BY MATT YAKI (WANDERING WHEELS OWNER/OPERATOR)

Head out early to Mt. Macpherson for a quick spin on some classic Revy singletrack. Flowdown is an incredible trail that is buff and fast, while trails like Tantrum and Sex On The Beach will give you more of a technical challenge. If eye popping allmountain type descents are what you’re after then check out trails like Berm Donor, Super-HappyFun or my favourite: TNT to Break-a-Leg.

DAY 1

After your morning pedal, fuel up and get yourself up to the Frisby Ridge XC trailhead (a 4x4 vehicle is recommended for the Frisby FSR, or you can get a shuttle drop with Wandering Wheels). This buttery smooth, out-and-back trail climbs through old growth forests and alpine meadows for 11kms before dropping down to a small alpine lake - very invigorating on a warm summer day! The views are amazing in all directions, but keep your eyes on the trail and revel in the fast, flowy and superplayful descent back to the trailhead parking area. Continue on to the steep and technical Ultimate Frisby DH trail and keep shredding! This 30km trail combo dishes up a descent of over 5000ft! The Frisby DH spits you out at the base of Boulder Mountain, Revelstoke’s freeride playground. You can coordinate some shuttle laps of Loggin’ THIS PAGE PHOTOS BY KYLE SANGUIN

Leftovers, Iron Lotus, or the local’s favourite: Boondocker. There are about a dozen distinct trails on Boulder which offer something for everyone. Wooden features, machine-built jumps, drops, steeps, and high speed flow are all found on these DH trails. Finish your day shuttling right into the sunset. Start your morning with a scenic drive to the Keystone Standard Basin trailhead. Keystone is another Revelstoke alpine treasure! More technically demanding than Frisby, Keystone is an 11.5 km out-and-back trail that challenges riders: steep, punchy climbs; rugged fast descents; exposed side-hill sections - all mixed in with the most perfect alpine singletrack you will find anywhere! This backcountry trail sports ridiculous views and is the epitome of Revelstoke mountain biking. Big mountains and big adventure!

DAY 2

On your way back to town you will find the Sale Mtn FSR and the EPIC Martha Creek DH trail, a favourite amongst DH’ers and Enduro riders. Shuttle up 5000 feet to the summit of Sale Mountain and get gripped for a thrilling 9 km descent! The trail finishes at the Martha Creek Provincial Park on the shores of Lake Revelstoke, the perfect place to wrap up your weekend with a refreshing swim and a satisfying “Cheers!”

Life & Local Finds

THE GIRL WITH THE L O W E R B A C K TAT T O O BOOK WRITTEN BY AMY SCHUMER REVIEWED BY BRANDI PARNELL

More than a female comedian, Amy Schumer is a writer, actress and producer. She is strong and beautiful. Over the holidays, while many of our readers hit the slopes, I curled up with a faux fur blanket and a hot chocolate to read Schumer’s debut book. Admittedly, I hadn’t followed her career. I knew relatively little about her. So, I found this read to be surprisingly funny, and more than that, real look into her life. The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo is a series of reflections, vignettes, and lists; it is a look at the high, and low points of her life, and the experiences that have shaped who she is today. She is crude at times, but incredibly compassionate. She can be vulgar, but is able to laugh at herself, and make light of topics many find socially awkward. But what I found most noteworthy and especially appropriate for our first issue of 2017 was the empowering undercurrent, her wideopen heart and her wisdom. Amy Schumer is fierce and she is a student of life. Here are five lessons I took away from reading, The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo:

putting it all on the line, issue after issue is no small feat. But work will seem effortless when you pursue something you desperately want. Almost everyone that has something worth fighting for, acquired what they have with patience, passion and hustle. So post your resolutions, try new things and go for it! Learn from the Lows. We all have them…setbacks, disappointments, and trials. We all get low sometimes. Schumer’s approach to adversity is to not let it define you; learn from it and move on. Whether it be mistakes (forgive yourself), failures (don’t dwell) or heartbreak (love the people who love you), lows add a richness to our lives. Her advice is fitting for a comedian, “The moments that make life worth living are when things are at their worst and you find a way to laugh.” Know Yourself. Schumer, although often in the public’s eye, admits to be an introvert. And she’s okay with that. Knowing yourself means knowing when to close off the world, disconnect from social media and recharge. Hit the slopes, your yoga mat or the gym. Go to the movies, get more sleep, or get out and dance. Whatever you need, discover it, and use those attributes as a road map to living your best life.

“I say if I’m beautiful. I say if I’m strong. You will not determine my story – I will,”

Laugh Often. Especially at yourself. Laughter releases endorphins, makes the body feel good and is contagious. Laughing reduces stress and boosts T-cells, which help the body fight off sickness. Amy Schumer. So instead of retreating, Love Yourself. Love the hell get together with good outta yourself. Love you pals when you’re feeling with 10 pounds to lose. Love blue and laugh – especially yourself with bags under at yourself. There is no better remedy to recover from a your eyes or a Big Mac in your hand. Life isn’t about being perceived blunder, goof or embarrassment. Be human, be perfect. It’s about releasing expectations and being your best Amy, laugh often. company, your tried and true companion, you – completely imperfect. Hustle for What You Want. If you are fortunate enough to find your passion, do whatever it takes to make it your I really enjoyed this read. I appreciated the humour, but reality. Any new venture can be a risk. Here at Mint, especially loved the truth. Enjoy.
