L-R LINDSAY DAY - DIRECTOR OF SALES, HEATHER DAY - OWNER/ DEVELOPER, JILL LENTON - DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING

AN ESTHETICIAN’S BEAUTIFUL FUTURE BY WANDA KURCHABA PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78

“Who dares to teach must never cease to learn.” - John Cotton Dana his famous quote is one that holds true at Daydreams Spa and H & Co Academy - Esthetics, especially with the exciting transformations that both businesses are in the midst of.

T

Although they are two separate businesses, they share several commonalities and will be even more entwined as businesses re-open following provincially mandated closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Both companies, owned by Heather Day, have shared the co-located space on 10th Street in Brandon for the

10

The Mint Experience

last three years and offer similar services. That, however, is about to change. With H & Co Academy - Esthetics recently becoming an advanced esthetics program, students will now complete the final portion of their program at Daydreams Spa, which means their menu of services will expand and be more aligned. All aspects of both the academy and the spa will be connected and everyone benefits, including clients. “This education concept has been in the works for 5 years. It’s when you have students, apprentices, and educators all in the same building. Your educators, who

are fully licensed, will provide services when they’re not educating. But everybody in the building will be involved in the education process whether their teaching on the clinic floor, providing input on customer service or educating on curriculum topics related to the trade,” said Heather. The Advanced Esthetics program now provides students with one year of training versus nine months. The

additional schooling will allow students to become licensed advanced medical estheticians providing them with training to perform advanced skincare techniques such as dermaplaning, peels, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) laser hair removal, IPL photo facials, Hydra facials and more. “This is amazing news for our Daydreams clients. They will be able to continue to have the Daydreams experience, just at half the price and with more services to choose from. Our students are trained using the same exclusive product lines, they are taught the same techniques, and offer the same level of customer service that any licensed esthetician provides,” said Heather. With the expanded menu, clients will be able to enjoy spa services at an affordable price with a student esthetician,

or if they prefer they can pay the regular price for a licensed esthetician. H & Co Academy - Esthetics is one of only four accredited facilities in Manitoba. With strict guidelines, Manitoba’s programs are the most regulated across the country. When you’re in the business of educating, one of the signs of a successful program is that your graduates become employed and they are sought after.

“With our advanced program students are getting an additional 600 hours of training on the clinic floor. They are well trained when they graduate so they are very employable. We are already getting inquiries from other provinces because they know our students have the skills and the experience to provide amazing services. We wish we could hire them all,” said Heather.

Sustainable Fashion FEATURE

From Thread to

WARDROBE Why should you care what you wear? BY ANNE MULAIRE

Having just returned from the Copenhagen International Fashion Fair, Anne realized how the women of these Northern countries are engaged in the concept of Sustainability and Profitability. She has learned that in Europe, designers are finding ways to do both. Upon her return, Anne was more determined than ever to educate women on how to buy less but buy better. When Anne shops fashion, she first chooses clothes that she feels comfortable in, a firm believer that comfort is the most important trend to follow. It will always be in style. If it’s comfortable, chances are, you will wear it more often. As a designer, Anne is also very conscious of the supply chain in the fashion industry. When she began her company 15 years ago, she wanted to be an eco-friendly designer. Her mother raised her to care deeply about the environment and, as a teacher, taught her to be proud of her Métis heritage.

“I AM ESPECIALLY PROUD OF MY ZÉRO WASTE COLLECTION” From day one, sustainability and ethical manufacturing are key priorities. Fabrics of choice are bamboo and organic cotton. Yarn comes from sustainable sources throughout the world and then is shipped to Canada for expert milling, knitting, and dying. She designs and manufactures her clothes in small runs in Winnipeg where they champion fair-trade practices, ethical employment, and equal opportunities for all. | www.annemulaire.ca

The story behind the name Anne Mulaire In 2019, Voilà par Andréanne became Anne Mulaire. The new name comes directly from the owner/designer’s full name, Andréanne Mulaire Dandeneau and was created to better reflect her designer identity. Anne Mulaire encapsulates the designer’s identity, her eco-conscience and remains true to her indigenous heritage. As a label, Anne Mulaire is an expression of heritage, beauty, comfort, and pride. As a company, Anne Mulaire is an enterprise committed to fair trade, environmental stewardship, and ethical business practices. As a woman, Anne Mulaire is an inspired award-winning Canadian fashion designer of French Métis descent with a desire to empower the women who wear her clothing.

ANDRÉANNE IN COTTON/BAMBOO MASK

Designs first inspired by dance and movement Anne started dancing at the age of 14 years. Her main dance style was Contemporary dancing. Unable to find comfortable dance wear, Anne began to design her own dancewear and costumes. She designed costumes for Nafro Dance Productions for ten years and loved every moment of it! With these well-researched creations, Anne became aware of movement as well as cultural sensitivity and how it inspired and affected her designs. To this day, these guiding principles along with the importance of comfort and style continue to inspire her collections. 14

MONELLE DRESS MADE IN BAMBOO KNIT WITH CATHERINE VINE PRINT ON THE HEM

Andréanne was raised to embrace her Anishinaabe/French héritage, respect all people, and honour the planet we share — principles that still guide her as a businesswoman and a designer. Andréanne Mulaire Dandeneau was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba—Winnipeg’s thriving French quarter. She is the greatgreat-great granddaughter of Catherine Mulaire, who was born 1843. A daughter of a Voyageur and the first rural Métis teacher in the Red River Settlement, Catherine was also an accomplished seamstress whose embroidery continues to inspire the designs of Anne Mulaire today. One of Catherine’s original embroidery, now a family heirloom which was made for the back of a rocking chair, inspired Andréanne. Many of her designs have a stylized version of the original embroidery which she calls Catherine’s Vine.

BETHANY AND MORGAN OUT AND ABOUT

Our products aren’t just made in Canada, they are shaped by Canada. Anne Mulaire’s clothing lines honour Canada’s French, Indigenous, and Métis character. With hints of Prairie culture, notes of the North, and shades of the Pacific Northwest, Anne Mulaire’s artistry and workmanship shine a light on one of the greatest countries in the world.

ZÉRO WASTE NON-MEDICAL GRADE MASK AND SWEATSHIRT

When you wear Anne Mulaire, you are being kind to the world. And kind to yourself. Anne Mulaire’s spirit of environmental stewardship is shaped by her Indigenous roots, her upbringing, and her keen sense of what is right. This principle was the driving force behind the creation of a distintive Zéro Waste Collection. Nothing goes to waste with Anne Mulaire. Not fabric, and certainly not creativity. Twice a year, on May 1 and January 1st, Anne and her team gather remnants to create one-of-a-kind, super-comfortable “zero waste” outfits to delight and impress fashionistas and hippies alike! Remnants from the Zero Waste designs are then donated to individuals or local organizations to be transformed into dog beds for pet rescues, chemo caps, and other wonderful purposes. It is truly a labour of love that results in Zero Waste!

BETHANY AND MORGAN AT THE MARKET

Show you care by what you wear. Bamboo is Anne Mulaire’s core fabric. It breathes. Deeply. It hums. If you listen carefully, you might hear it singing. Some call it “washable silk”. Anne Mulaire just calls it magical. The bamboo knits used are absolutely unique to Anne Mulaire. The bamboo, cotton, and hemp that are used are grown without pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers. Bamboo is an especially good choice for the environment as it requires less water than many other crops and releases more oxygen than other materials do. Anne Mulaire designs are eco friendly and eco-efficient.

FLORA PRINT OUTFIT

Ethical fashion is about buying better AND buying less. Ethical fashion is not a fad, it is a lifestyle. It is about taking your blinders off and becoming aware of the life we are all living. It is about taking an earnest look at the damage humans are inflicting upon themselves and the planet. Buy better, spend less.... If you love an ethical brand such as Anne Mulaire, support them. Buying local is another way to bring sustainability into your world.

LAUREN IN RAVEN DRESS LOUNGING

Striving for a circular economy is the only responsible thing to do moving into a new era. Moving beyond the “takemake-waste industrial model,” a circular economy focuses on the life cycle of its products. It involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refuelling, and recycling existing materials. Under the new « REnouveau » Program, Anne’s team will repair or mend any worn Anne Mulaire or Voilà par Andréanne products for free. This has been an integral part of the business for the past 15 years and will remain a top priority for Anne Mulaire.

TECHNOLOGY MEETS TREATMENTS The Skin & Vein Centre - we want to help you get the look you want. BY WANDA KURCHABA PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78

ime does not stand still for Dr. Barb Kelleher. Since opening The Skin & Vein Centre 14 years ago she has continually adapted her business to meet the needs of her clients while using the latest technology to do so.

T

Introducing the latest technology allows Dr. Kelleher to introduce more services that take less time, are less invasive and more comfortable for her patients. Some of the more recent add-ons to the service menu include using laser treatment to remove tattoos, tighten skin, and perform photofacials (an efficient treatment for removing redness and brown spots). While The Skin & Vein Centre offers a variety of new services, the service most in demand is one that Dr. Kelleher has been offering since she first opened. “Varicose veins are one thing that doesn’t change, I just keep doing more and more. Once you get over 50 years of age nearly 80 per cent of men and women have some form of varicose veins. Some are just spider veins, but what I see are the bigger more symptomatic veins,” said Dr. Kelleher. If you have varicose veins, you might not attribute the symptoms you are experiencing to your veins. It’s often not until they’ve been treated that patients start to realize how much better they feel. Some of the more common symptoms are tired and heavy legs, changes in the skin (darkening), burning, itching, bulging veins, and an overall uncomfortable feeling of soreness. In severe cases, if not treated soon enough, patients may end up with an ulcer in the ankle area.

DR. BARB KELLEHER

20

The Mint Experience

With varicose veins, many people will attempt to alleviate the symptoms with the use of compression stockings. While they certainly help, most find that they are uncomfortable, they don’t wear them as long or as often as they should, and older people have a difficult time getting them on and off. That’s why a more permanent treatment is often recommended.

“In the past, the only way to effectively treat varicose veins was with surgery. Many people likely know of someone who’s had their veins stripped, which is a pretty brutal procedure. Today there are many different ways to close veins, but not all of the options are available in Manitoba and if they are they are often very expensive. “I currently use ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy. A procedure that uses ultrasound to guide the injection into the insufficient vein to close it.” said Dr. Kelleher. While the treatment plan varies depending on the severity of the issue, most patients come in for an average of one or two treatments that are done two to three weeks apart. The treatments take a maximum of 30 minutes, but many are done in as little as 10 to 15 minutes. In extreme cases, a patient may need as many as six treatments. Dr. Kelleher only sees varicose vein patients once they have a referral from their family doctor, as it is a medical treatment. There is only one other centre in Manitoba that offers this same service using ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy. Dr. Kelleher is a life-long Brandon resident who has spent the last 28 years practicing medicine.

MENTAL HEALTH STRATEGIES FOR THE WORKPLACE

22

2020 has not been a regular year for your business or your employees

You’re always trying to create a psychologically safe environment

Wasn’t 2020 supposed to be humanities’ best year yet? Then we met Covid-19, which not only disrupted business operations but also dismayed personal lives. It was with much distress that many employers made the difficult decision to lay employees off as well as other personal cuts in the interest of the business. As Manitoba progresses to its new normal employees are returning, and existing employees are learning to navigate how this will look in their lives too. You may have noticed your employees dealing with an increased level of depression, anxiety, substance use or other mental health concerns.

We know that you place a high value on occupational health and safety. You know your employees well, and can generally tell if they seem to be experiencing a personal difficulty. One challenge that businesses have faced during this pandemic is that their knowledge on how to help their employees may be depleted: the needs of their employees are higher than a business owner may be able to meet. Still, you are committed to doing what you can to support those who are so valuable to your operations. It makes sense, then, to consider outside help to assist you in creating wellness strategies.

The Mint Experience

Corporate responsibility is being closely watched during the pandemic While providing resources to assist your employees may be part of your workplace culture already, there is an increased emphasis on the need to ensure your employees are taken care of during this time from the public. In a rapidly shifting economy where consumers may be in a restrained position to make purchasing decisions, they are more and more making “moral purchases”, where they support businesses which they perceive have gone above and beyond to make ethical decisions and take care of their employees.

a highly experienced leader and health care professional, John is able to help business owners articulate their needs and translate them into common sense, solution focused strategies. These include brief on-site information sessions, one to one or group counselling, and comprehensive wellness plans. Connect with John for an obligation free consultation on workplace wellness strategies today.

Employees who are psychologically healthy contribute to a positive workplace culture This one is a well-known fact: healthy employees are productive, enhance your workplace culture, and contribute to a strong community. When employees feel their mental health needs are met, they are in a position to work more effectively and are more likely to feel satisfied and remain in their job. Providing supports for your employee’s mental health makes good financial sense, particularly in what is rapidly becoming a competitive environment for the recruitment and retention of quality employees.

Let’s connect to determine your needs At Divergent Counselling we are in the unique position of being able to understand the needs of employers and employees as it relates to mental health and wellness. As

Business Profile | Yury Psychological Services

Tell us more about Yury Psychological services?

Transforming Lives,

Building Independence

I specialize in working with individuals struggling with emotional distress. This could be anything from trauma, to mood issues, to generalized anxiety. I focus on helping people to better understand how they work with their emotions and thoughts can increase suffering, undermine their ineffective views of emotions, and help them learn to come in contact with what bothers them in effective ways. What made you interested in pursuing psychology as a career? As an undergraduate student, I really enjoyed the research aspect of psychology, so that is what got me to major in it. Clinical Psychology focuses on developing treatments and allows me to work with patients directly. Being a clinical psychologist since 2009, I took the leap and opened my own private practice in 2012, and am proud of how I can help patients work towards making positive changes. Do you have a quick tip you can suggest to readers for increasing or building their mental wellness? When it comes to mental health, as in anything in our lives, there aren’t any quick tips or easy fixes. Developing effective treatments doesn’t have to take a long time but it involves learning and practice. Anything that is supposed to make you feel good immediately probably isn’t helpful long term. I really encourage people to take the time to develop effective strategies for their mental health, over time.

Staying healthy at home BY THE MINT FAMILY

Now that the community around us is slowly going back to what it once was, everyone will be returning to regular routines, and we want to keep the good habits with us while we move forward! It’s not too late to start! We are going to list out our method of integrating a workout routine to everyday life!

Specify time of day to work out Dedicating a part of your day to working out is critical to establishing it within your schedule. If you can reserve a portion of your day to this one activity this will allow for more focus on what you’re doing while dissipating distractions!

Set your goals Setting goals can be one of the most important steps, because this will be the way you measure your own success. Don’t forget to keep your goals SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely)

Maintain positivity Working out can be hard, but that is one of the reasons why it is so rewarding! But don’t forget why you started in the first place. Looking back on your goals, whether it’s based on health or aesthetic, these are all positive affirmations!

THE EVOLUTION OF CHIROPRACTIC CARE BY GORD RUST

Westman Chiropractic

Modern evidence-based chiropractic can be best described as the conservative, non-invasive and drug free treatment of pain, loss of function of the musculoskeletal system due to injury or other non-traumatic stresses, or dysfunction of the neuromusculoskeletal structures of the body. Gord Rust 26

The Mint Experience

While most people identify chiropractic with spinal manipulation, i.e. “cracking” of spinal and other joints, much of my daily practice involves educating patients on what structures and processes may be involved in producing their symptoms and working with each individual on active exercises, movement and behavioural strategies to help them overcome or control symptoms and get more enjoyment out of their daily lives.

Probably the most important concept that has developed over the last 10 to 15 years in the field of pain management has been the evolution and understanding of the “bio-psycho-social” model of pain. This has brought a much-needed balance to the strictly structuralmechanical view of pain and dysfunction because it allows expanded appreciation for the role of an individual’s emotional and psychological experiences and how it affects their perception of their pain.

One of the biggest threats we see in practice, not just to our muscle and joint health but certainly to our overall health is the ever-widening issue of physical inactivity. Virtually every consumer accessible invention or technological advancement of the past 25 years has made us less and less mobile and generally weaker and more vulnerable to injury when we ask our bodies to perform daily tasks.

Anxiety, depression, emotional and physical trauma, dissatisfaction or stress in work or home settings are all potential contributors to an individual’s perception, interpretation and expression of their symptoms. The appreciation for this model of pain allows for a much more team-oriented approach where patients may be encouraged to seek concurrent care with medical specialists, counsellors and other therapists in an effort to help them manage and overcome their symptoms.

When I started practice in 1991, many of the office workers I saw were suffering acute low back strains from lifting files out of the lowest cabinet drawer or lifting heavy file boxes repeatedly throughout the day. Contrast that to today where almost all those types of tasks are just clicks on the mouse, yet the proportion of my practice that is made up of the deskbound office worker has skyrocketed, mostly due to postural fatigue and the complex and stubborn web of muscle deactivation and tissue strain that follows day after day. This is where motivating patients into active care with movement and strengthening strategies becomes an essential component of care.

As a chiropractor, my role for this patient often starts with just the basics of finding tolerable movement patterns and working with them in overcoming fear and apprehension and helping them appreciate that “hurt” doesn’t always equal “harm”.

THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY Beeyond the Bump BY WANDA KURCHABA PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78

ilestone events such as graduations, weddings, or having a child are often exhilarating and momentous, however many other emotions come into play as well. Natasha Leonard knows all too well the feelings that can affect your physical and mental health after you’ve had a baby.

M

“I was a new mom and I didn’t realize it at the time, but I suffered from postpartum anxiety for 13 months. My hormones were completely out of whack and I just didn’t feel like myself,” said Natasha. After becoming pregnant a second time she knew she just couldn’t go through that again. When her second child was around seven months old, she felt the grip loosening 28

and reached out to her doctor for help. “This time, I knew I wasn’t supposed to be feeling this way.” With her personal struggles behind her, Natasha had a sense that there were a lot of other new moms out there that were facing similar situations. And that’s how Beeyond the Bump was born. This new Brandon-based business is owned by Natasha and her business partner Sam Wells, who is also a new mom after adopting a child just over a year ago. “Together, we helped each other through our postpartum experiences and now we want to help other women as well. We’re here to support one another, we want to learn

We want to create a space that is inclusive, comfortable, and free of judgment. A place where new moms, regardless of how their baby came to them can feel a connection to the community and get the support they need.

and figure out parenthood together,” said Natasha. “Postpartum isn’t just about depression and anxiety, there are many different aspects.” The concept of Beeyond the Bump is based on a program that exists in Ireland, where Natasha immigrated from. Called Community Mothers, the notion is based on moms visiting other moms in their homes to support them. They are a sounding board, they offer support, help to make lunch, and if need be care for the baby while the new mom showers or takes a much-needed nap. “They look at the moms in a very holistic sense. Every part of her needs to be in line for her to be a benefit to everybody around her, including herself. I know that comes with support and understanding that if something is wrong, you need to know where to direct that person,” said Natasha. Beeyond the Bump will focus on creating bonds with other mothers through courses, workshops, and support groups. A vast range of topics will be covered including discussions on relationships, pelvic floor health, postpartum anxiety, and so on.

The sessions will focus on the mother’s health and well-being and the duration will vary. Some will last six weeks or more, others will be held in one evening. From the start, courses will be held at related businesses such as Baby Bump, but eventually the new entrepreneurs plan to have their own facility where they can support and educate their clients. They also hope to expand services outside of the city. “We want to create a space that is inclusive, comfortable, and free of judgment. A place where new moms, regardless of how their baby came to them can feel a connection to the community and get the support they need,” said Natasha. “Our space will be open to women who delivered their children vaginally, adopted, had a cesarian, are new moms, or have multiple children.”

THE POWER WITHIN YOU‌. BY KIM RAAIJMAKERS

32

The Mint Experience

The most important asset you have in your possession is your mind. Yet so often we overlook the benefits of mastering our mind and mindset. When your mindset is primed for success - look out you will be able to accomplish anything. The foundation of your mindset is the beliefs which you act from.

Repetitive thoughts become your beliefs, so it becomes essential to dive deep into your thoughts and feelings to uncover the underlying belief. When this belief is uncovered, you can examine it and determine if this is true. Ask yourself if this is a belief you want to hold on to. It is only at this point that you can begin to shift and change your beliefs. Even minor shifts create massive changes in your life and those around you. In a typical day you have over 60,000 thoughts. As you create a great mindset, it can be daunting and exhausting to control your thoughts. So how can you start and make it easier on yourself? Focus is on how you are feeling. Your feelings are the barometer of your thoughts. When your thoughts are lifting you up and you are feeling joyful, you become an unstoppable force, able to take on any project or task. You can effectively make decisions on how to move forward. As you look to change your thoughts and beliefs an effective method to do on your own is the “Results Shift Method”. This method is effective and simple to use as you discover which beliefs are driving the outcomes that you are achieving. Put simply: What you believe will drive your thoughts, your feelings which causes your actions and ultimately leads to the results you achieve. Beliefs • Thoughts • Feelings •Actions • Results

STEP 1 | With this method, you start at the

result or outcome that you want to change and work your way backward.

STEP 2 | What actions did YOU take or not take that resulted in the outcome.

STEP 3 | What feelings were YOU experiencing when you took these actions?

STEP 4 | What thoughts were YOU having that caused the feelings you were experiencing?

STEP 5 | What belief was driving these thoughts?

Remember to focus on YOU, not what others have done or could have done. When you uncover the belief that is in the driver’s seat, you can begin to address and reprogram that belief. Do you recognize this belief? Is this what you want to believe? Is this belief true? To achieve a different result, you will need to CHANGE the belief. This is not an overnight occurrence. Beliefs change over time by consciously changing your thoughts. When your beliefs empower you, you will have created a powerful and unstoppable mind!

STRESS AND THE WORKING WOMAN WITH SYLVIA UBELL FROM

two farm kids NATURAL FOODS

I have been well-acquainted with stress for the last forty years; eight as a high school teacher and the last thirty-two running our family business while raising three children. Working late into the night becomes habitual as we struggle to meet the demands of work and home and running your own business means you are never away from stress for long.

I have found the Stress-Relax line of supplements beneficial as they have effective quality ingredients like 5-HTP, a form of the amino acid, tryptophan, which can help REM sleep, chewable GABA, a fast acting form of an amino acid that works as a serotonin precursor for chronic stress, chewable L’Theanine, another amino acid for relaxing and sublingual melatonin to help get to sleep. Taking it easy on caffeine will make it easier to unwind at night. I suggest limiting coffee and black tea to one cup at breakfast if you are having sleep issues, and trying nonstimulating herbal teas the rest of the day. Herbal teas for relaxing include lavender, chamomile, hops and valerian. Rooibos, or African red bush tea is calming and unlike coffee and black tea, it does not inhibit iron absorption which is so important for many women. Small rituals like a fifteen minute warm bath with Epsom Salts and a few drops of a relaxing aromatherapy oil such as lavender, rosemary, or sandalwood before bed or a few drops of a relaxing oil on a tissue tucked into your pillowcase can help settle you down. I use an amazing little sleep mask filled with lavender blossoms to shut out all annoying light at night. Taking a few “Me Moments” regularly will help you cope with the pressures of business life.

When you are struggling to find enough time in the day and you can’t get enough quality sleep, there is help. Vitamin B Complex is nicknamed “the stress vitamin” and the newest form is co-enzymated for highest absorption. B Complex Vitamins should be taken early in the day as they increase alertness. Because the immune system takes a hit from chronic stress, I am a big advocate of non-acidic Vitamin C and Vitamin D as well as the minerals zinc and magnesium.

Family values

and your healthy lifestyle are top priority with Sylvia at two farm kids NATURAL FOODS

Being in business for me is about – In an independent small business, I love being able to adapt quickly to change in order to help other people find the natural foods, supplements, and personal care that they require in their search for better health for themselves and for the environment. How are you going to leave your mark on the world – I hope people will say, “Sylvia helped me live a better life by giving me the confidence to take charge of my own health. It started with her statement, “If YOU don’t look after your health, it WILL go away! It made me realize that I need to listen to my body and learn to help myself achieve better health.” Tell us what gets you out of bed and motivated each day – Helping others learn how to make changes for a healthier life. You see a pattern here?!

SYLVIA UBELL

My first career path was spent teaching high school English, environmental and cultural geography for eight years. My husband and I looked at the opportunity to run a business together that would enable us to work and vacation together and that would benefit our children to be growing up in a healthy environment similar to our farm upbringing while following a different path from our parents. In August of 1988, we opened our natural food store in Brandon, just days after the birth of our daughter. I was teaching every day by helping people achieve better health. My strength lies in my ability to study all areas of natural health topics, and in communicating effectively to those seeking help in making changes. It has been so extremely rewarding over the last 32 years to have people come back and tell me that they have made positive changes in their lifestyle based on me pointing them in the direction of vibrant health.

What do you love most about work and life here in Westman – Westman has a population base still strongly tied to the family farm, and I have always supported local farm-based businesses by giving them a start by selling their farm products in our store. In the early 1990’s, we were the first to sell Linda Pizzey’s Flax Bread and in 2007, she won the Canadian Agi-Marketer of the year, as well as many other awards for the production and promotion of Manitoba grown flax. We are happy to have raised our family in a community with great family values and with great word of mouth that has helped to establish two farm kids NATURAL FOODS as a leader in healthy living.

THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIP BY KYRA HOGAN PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78

THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIP A team of business partners is looking to compliment Brandon’s business landscape through strategic partnerships, innovative approaches, diligent work, and a hint of humour. Tanya LaBuick is the newest partner: she joined the team two years ago now in the role of Chief Operations Officer at CW2 Construction Ltd. and Guardian Fencing Ltd., working side-by-side with President Bart Curtis and Partner PJ Crane, as well as Partner Warren Hope at Guardian Fencing. 44

The Mint Experience

The firm helps commercial and residential owners successfully achieve their new build or renovation vision by providing design, construction, and contract management services. Notable recent projects include; Precision Denture, Precision Toyota, Christie’s Office Plus, ACC Animal Proteins Facility, and various projects on Canadian Forces Base Shilo. Guardian Fencing Ltd. is a full-service fencing company serving customers in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. We provide agricultural, commercial, industrial, recreational, and residential fence solutions.

CW2 nominated as Outstanding New Business 2017, 2018 & 2019 Guardian Fencing nominated as Outstanding New Business in 2018 Part of CW2’s uniqueness comes from the collaboration of their partnership group. Bart Curtis, President of CW2, has 23 years’ experience in the construction industry garnered from achieving his Red Seal in Carpentry to estimating, and now running his own companies. He has worked diligently in building both companies with a fever and care much like a parent with a child. PJ Crane, Vice President of the successful family business of Crane Steel Structures Ltd. who are experts in metal building systems and have over 35 years’ experience and pre-engineered metal building systems, which are commonly used for commercial, industrial and recreational facilities. LaBuick, who formed LaBuick & Co., a successful consulting business in 2002, built upon her 25 years’ experience in project management, strategy development, and high-performance team building is also a globally certified Project Management Professional (PMP) with clients such as World Rugby, Populous, and FIFA. Warren Hope of Brandon Heating & Plumbing, Grand Valley Mechanical, and Grand Valley Restaurant and Equipment Supply, adds an educated perspective and industry acumen to the Guardian team with his multiple decades of experience. WHY ADD DIVERSITY? Although LaBuick doesn’t come from a direct background in construction, she has worked in construction divisions for multiple mega-events like NFL Super Bowls and several Olympic Games. Her experience is heavy in project management and team leadership in chaotic and high stress environments. “Each of us has over two decades of experience, and that includes Tanya in her own sector,” Curtis said.

“The combined 80+ years of business experience sets both start-up companies on a foundation that can serve them in multiple ways.” Hope concurred, saying, “Anytime you introduce diversity, you also introduce opportunity.” Crane said the road to success in partnerships can be tricky, but exciting at the same time. LaBuick added, “I think it speaks volumes as to how they think and how progressive they really are that they were open to diversifying their partnership. I also think it explains their success as business people.” The collective construction knowledge of Crane, Curtis and Hope offered Guardian Fencing the acumen and for lack of a better word, guts, to go after a piece of the market that could be characterized as a monopoly. The company went through a recent reorganization and hired in new staff to compliment the partners vision of where they want to head. WHAT ARE YOU ALWAYS TRYING TO IMPROVE? Communication is a fundamental underpinning to the kind of flexible, agile, responsive operation they are creating together.

“We talk consistently, we are trying to build the communication channels to be open and fluid so that we can keep things moving whether we are at our desks or not,” LaBuick said. “We are establishing a common purpose and do meet and talk regularly to course correct, move faster, or slower.” Hope agreed, “Developing a value-aligned partnership that focuses on common goals and complementary strengths is key to ensuring successful outcomes.

WHAT WE DO CW2 Construction & Design Ltd. is a full-service general contractor for construction, working predominantly in the commercial or industrial space, but providing services residentially as well. They boast an excellent team, comprised of trades people, project managers, administrative, and management staff. Guardian Fencing Ltd. is a full-service fencing company serving customers in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. We provide agricultural, commercial, industrial, recreational, and residential fence solutions.

I think one other key thing is that none of us take ourselves too seriously and there is a playful banter emerging that is also building us as partners, and as a team. “ “PJ has been a really great partner in terms of building the businesses and talking through other challenges,” Curtis said. I think we all have similar risk tolerances but enough differences that we can balance the risk with calculated conversation before we leap. I’ve come to trust and rely on PJ as a mentor as I grow and stretch my own comfort zone. He’s been a great asset to me, well, all of us.” DO YOU ALWAYS GET ALONG? “Nope, we don’t always get along and we definitely don’t always agree. Sometimes Bart and I walk away and come back the next day with a better perspective, other times we have a good ole’ fashioned throw down and then be done with it,” she said. Curtis commented, laughing, “She rolls her eyes a lot and I shake my head. It seems to work.” But in all seriousness, LaBuick said, “I think the important thing is that we respect each other and we have established trust and a shared vision for the companies. We want to build a different kind of construction company. “

While they each have different skill sets and areas of focus, there’s also significant overlap where the strengths they bring to the table dovetail and create a synergy of passion and energy and expertise which adds up to far more than the sum of its parts. “Strategic partnerships benefit everyone: businesses, employees and customers. Our customers benefit from the strengths and offerings each partner brings to the table,” Crane said. “Plus, deepening ties between complementary businesses fosters collaboration and longevity, and gives us the chance to offer services and solutions for our customers.” THE RECIPROCITY OF PARTNERSHIP Being accountable to the each other is a good check and balance in terms of risk because the partners decide BIG things together. Progress can’t happen in one bucket and working collaboratively as partners – within the businesses as well as within their ecosystem – they all agree their goal is to improve, always, and they think this partnership sets them all up for success, collectively, and individually. Only time will tell where they end up, but for today, their foundation is solid, and they are definitely building up, wood or steel, with a combined strength.

It wasn’t going to be easy to find anyone who was open to going the extra miles, literally, to the edge of Manitoba to excavate the side of steep piece of land to then attempt to build exactly what we wanted, the way we wanted into it. And to top it off, we’d like them to do that mostly in our absence so they would have to have all of the connections in every trade needed and still work with us on the trades we wanted involved. Enter two brothers from Brandon who not only had the experience in building but more importantly the demeanor and genuine interest in meeting every expectation. Corey and Mike Peters with Alair Homes were about to do more for us than we imagined anyone would be willing to. We purchased an old cabin at Lake Metigoshe knowing it would be a full replacement project. It had a 18 inch drop slant over it’s 30 foot width. The hill it was on was steep which would make any build a challenge, but where there is challenge, there was also great opportunity. The chance to dig deep and put in a 3 story cabin with loft and walk out basement with views that could be closer to the water than most. Working with Alair Homes was going to be the blessing we didn’t even know we needed. Mike and Corey took plenty of time to hear exactly what we were wanting, ask the best questions and really hear what we wanted and trust me, that was a very detailed and specific vision. Exposed dark timber frame beams, lighter but complimentary T&G wood ceilings, black accents throughout, a full height stone fireplace, as many lake facing windows as possible, stairs made out of the exact same timbers as the beams, glass railings all built onto a ICF foundation on a hill that will make every driver coming to the property question their abilities. The guys from Alair quickly proved that they were not only the best guys for the job, but we’re convinced they are the only ones that would be able to do what was needed with the positivity and constant interaction. Pictures at every stage, FB messages to ensure everything was right, calls to double check our crazy ideas, working with all the trades to ensure timely work and the highest attention to detail. It struck me

when I was on site one day and one of the contractors said to me that if it wasn’t for Alair’s professionalism and having the written contracts in place, they probably would have taken another job knowing mine would still be there in a couple weeks. Alair’s attention to every aspect of the build and their contractor relationships are such an extra value that they bring to every job, but their ability to exceed customer expectations like they did with us over and over again was impossible to put a price tag on. Thank you Alair, everything is perfect.“ Brad & Nichole Loewen, Kailyn and Josh.

YOU HAVE BETTER THINGS TO DO THAN CLEAN Let Nikki’s Cleaning do the dirty work for you BY WANDA KURCHABA PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78

here are many reasons why people take the leap of faith to start their own business. They want to be in control of their own time, are wanting to be decision-makers, are hoping to earn more, and in many cases they are just looking for a complete career change.

T

When Nikki Chubaty ventured out three years ago to start Nikki’s Housekeeping, some of these factors certainly came into play. What she and her husband and business partner, Jordan, didn’t realize at the time was the potential for how quickly the business could grow. “After I had my first child and was finished my maternity leave I wasn’t eager to head back to my old job, so I decided to start a residential cleaning business. I started on my own and then as word spread, I was turning down jobs because there just wasn’t enough time in the day,” said Nikki. It wasn’t long after that the budding entrepreneurs were faced with the exciting prospect of expanding the business by hiring staff so they would be able to take on more projects. The cleaning service originally focused on residential jobs, but they quickly realized that there was potential from the client and employee perspective to move into commercial work as well. “We just didn’t realize there was such a market, people are working and they are just too busy. We sell something that you just can’t buy — time, and more time. We give that back to people so they can spend their free time doing other things and not having to worry about cleaning their house,” said Jordan. The expansion of the business meant changing the name to be all-encompassing. Now called Nikki’s Cleaning Services, they offer a wide range of services, not just standard indoor house cleaning. Their services include carpet cleaning, off-site rug cleaning, interior and exterior window cleaning, and exterior pressure washing (e.g. siding, decks, fences).

While the business is based in Brandon, they serve a large geographic area including the entire Westman region, as well as parts of the Parkland and Central regions. Currently, further expansion plans include setting up office locations in Dauphin and Portage la Prairie, which means they will also be hiring more employees. Initially, the couple was running the business out of their home but recently moved into a commercial space in Brandon on Park Avenue East that will include a storefront retail location opening this summer. “We’re thrilled to have a facility to now work out of. It is better for us, and our employees. It’s allowed us to separate our home-life from our business-life, which is important because of our young family,” said Nikki. “Another part of the business expansion includes branding our own cleaning products. We want to be a one-stop-shop for everything to do with cleaning. We’ve been working on this for months and we can’t wait to launch. The commercially concentrated products are made in Manitoba and will soon be available for purchase under the Nikki’s Cleaning label,” said Jordan. The full product line includes a multi-purpose cleaner, degreaser, glass cleaner, as well as sanitizer/disinfectant. It seems that the decision to start their own business was the right one for the Chubaty family. The future in the world of business looks bright for this young couple as they aren’t afraid to take risks.

Career Connections answers call for qualified employees during pandemic BY TRACY WILLIAMS OF CAREER CONNECTIONS

On March 13th at 3:00 p.m. Executive Director Tracy Williams decided to close the doors to Career Connections Inc. from her apartment in Holguin, Cuba. Two days earlier Tracy remained in close contact with Career Connections Inc. Board Chair, Riley Day and Assistant Director Brianne Roblin. To say that making this decision was hard was an understatement. Upon arriving back in Canada, Tracy was to self- isolate for 14 days and as new information became available it was recommended that Assistant Director Brianne Roblin also begin the 14- day self- isolation after recently travelling to Minneapolis, Minnesota. This meant that from their homes they led 20 staff and upwards 56

to 500 clients through something they had never experienced before. The beginning of this transition was hard, especially for all CCI staff who were now managing their own stresses, but also assisting in managing the stress and uncertainty of up to 250 clients who were either employed or job searching. Staff quickly realized that there most important job was to assist in making sure all clients knew “We Are in This Together”. The need for additional mental health support, food bank access etc. increased and assistance navigating these systems were given to people who had never accessed these services before.

CCI has seen some of their best success come out of this and now they are stronger because of it! As employers closed their doors, employee lay- offs began to fill the CCI employment counsellor’s days. Each client needed assistance in understanding the federal funding support programs, how to apply, if to apply and where to apply. As time went on the programs and service models were adapted to the communication capabilities of the clientele, 87% of clients had access to a phone and/ or internet. This meant that that clients would be able to still access CCI programming but from their homes. During the first month of remote delivery CCI had seen a significant increase in new clients due to a new provincial government program in Brandon called “Jobs on 9th,” 27 new people entered the job market. What came next, no one was expecting. Local Westman employers began to phone looking for staff to start ASAP, not one or two jobs but now almost 25! Clients were being hired for jobs all over Westman. Calls from local employers who knew that CCI has access to 200 plus individuals at any given time who were ready to work. Many clients started work the next day at local grocery stores, sanitation companies, meat packing and others and 95% of these people are still working today and have been hired on as permanent employees. None of this could be been predicted, but what is now clear is that it takes an entire community to move through a pandemic. Not one person, organization, business etc. it truly takes everyone! CCI has seen some of their best success come out of this and now they are stronger because of it! Career Connections Inc. provides employment services and supports to people with disabilities. If you are looking to fill an employment vacancy with the right employee, give Tracy Williams a call at Career Connections Inc. 204.728.9594. CCI is not only here to support the client they support but also the business in training and transitioning any client into their new workplace.

I work with over 30 lenders, including Chartered Banks and Monolines, to find you the best terms on your mortgage.

Hi, I’m Steve Banman, a Mortgage Broker at Centum Mortgage Choice. I work for you, not the bank. I want you to pay less interest, to lower your early payout penalty, and have the highest pre-payment privileges. Please contact me directly if you need help with anything, even long after your mortgage closes. This is a relationship for me, not a one-and-done. I also love educating my clients on the whole process to ensure they make informed decisions, and are happy with the result. Give me a call, text or email anytime. We’ll see if you’re approved, and for how much. STEVE BANMAN

3 | Down Payment & Closing Costs You’ll need to provide at least 5% of the purchase price for down payment. This can come from savings, a gift from family, or investments. Supporting documents include a 90 day transaction history from your bank or investment account and/or a gift letter if all or part of your down payment is from family. We’ll need to show you have an additional 1.5% of the purchase price to cover closing costs like lawyer fee and land transfer tax. Easy, right?

be community champions by sponsoring various events and organizations. “We’ve gotten behind events like the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, and organizations such as Westman Dreams for Kids, the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba, Teen Challenge, and the Brandon Shrine Club,” said Blaine Roque, General Manager. “And now, we’re excited to announce our support and involvement with 204 Grassroots Motocross.” 204 Grassroots Motocross, formerly the Manitoba Motocross Association, is dedicated to the growth and development of motocross racing in Manitoba. This local association has partnered with Motorsports Racing Canada to bring riders together, to develop new riders, and to share the passion of the sport with all stakeholders.

“We’re involved in every way that I can think of. We volunteer, some of us are riders, we’re getting our kids involved, we provide financial support, and we play a role in helping to promote the sport and the association. It’s a unique partnership,” said Blaine.

place throughout the province. Local riders practice and learn how to ride (new riders can enroll in Motocross School) at the TransCanada Moto Park in Kemnay. Small electronic bikes are available to children as young as four years old so they too can try their skills at motocross.

With the new focus on supporting community sports and recreation, Brandon Chrysler staff know that helping kids get involved with sports like motocross is important for many reasons. Motocross gets kids outside, keeps them active, helps to boost their confidence, encourages them to build on their mechanical skills, and gives them a sense of belonging as they become part of the motocross family.

If you make your way to one of the nearby races this summer, you’ll be sure to run into some of the folks at Brandon Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram. Be sure to say hi and thank them for giving back to the community and helping to grow the sport of motocross. And they’ll love seeing you pull up with your bikes on trailer pulled by a quality Ram truck!

“We want to have a bigger impact on what’s happening in the sporting community. If we can help to get more kids involved and help to grow the sport, then we know we’ve done a good thing. It’s a good cause.” The motocross season ramps up during the summer months with practices and a full schedule of races taking

4 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE SOMEONE ELSE (like Mint Marketing Experience), manage the social media for your business. You are the expert in your own field, it makes sense to use your time effectively Although business owners are wearing more and more hats, you know that your business receives the most value when you are able to spend your time focusing on the things that are the best use of your time. It’s not rocket-science- you might outsource your bookkeeping or payroll, IT, and more. It makes sense to have an outside group who specialize in social media management, manage your social media. 64

The Mint Experience

You don’t have time Along the same lines as you spending your time in ways that bring the value to your business, you may simply find that you don’t have the time to be able to keep up with your social media. This is important for two reasons. Consumers of social media are constantly being presented with sources of information. If you are not present in their news feed, you may not be front of mind. Secondly, if you do have a social media presence but only a sporadic offering, this may affect the image of your business or appear as though you are not up to date.

We take the time to understand your needs, develop content that fits for you, and keep coming back to ensure we’re on the right page.

on offering social media management packages in a way that lets businesses of all sizes promote their brand in an efficient, effective and value propositioned way. That’s our way of saying that social media management doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg.

Ok, so there were 5 reasons…. You don’t know what you would post or create! Many business owners may not know how to translate their expertise into social media posts or information that is interesting to their audience. Sharing content or news links that have been written by others is ok, but only goes so far. Your audience wants content that is specific to your industry, and reflects the things that makes your business unique. Your social media content and posting frequency is important in influencing your public image as a business. It makes sense to have professionals help you articulate and create the content that is bouncing around in your head, waiting to be seen.

You don’t (think you) have the budget for social media management This one is a biggie- because social media management is offered out there for a premium. But it does not have to be that way. At Mint Marketing Experience Inc., we focus
