Dear Reader! Welcome to our 2016/17 catalogue. The catalogue presents our latest collection of Laksen Sporting goods comprising some 400 different products. About half of these are new products, which will appear in the shops for the first time in the autumn of 2016. Product development is essential to us, and we are pleased to be able to introduce new designs within practically all categories of products in our collection. Without the feed-back we receive from the numerous loyal Laksen costumers and dealers on the more than 25 markets around the world, where Laksen goods are sold, it would not be possible for us to continue – year after year – to develop so many new products. For that we are grateful, just as we are grateful for the many new customers that buy our products every year. As usual, in addition to presenting our latest collection, the catalogue also comprises an article of more general interest. This time we take a look at Italian sporting guns and some of their famous makers. Gunmaking traditions in Italy reach back all the way to the era of the Roman empire, and Italian gunmakers are still able to maintain a leading position in the world – both when it concerns mass-produced guns for the ordinary hunter and shooter, and when it concerns luxury bespoke guns and sublime craftsmanship for discerning customers around the world. In many ways, 2016 is a year of change for us. In the future we will communicate with or customers in a different way than hitherto. For instance, we will in the future primarily be using film and videos to present Laksen Sporting and our products. Videos will be made available on various digital media including our own YouTube canal. Film and videos will of course also be available for viewing via our completely re-designed and user-friendly website at www.laksen-sporting.com. We look forward to welcoming you there. We hope you will enjoy reading through our catalogue. Happy hunting! Lars Thomsen CEO

T R A D I T I O N A N D I N N O VAT I O N
Italian gunsa class of their own Italian gunmakers’ long tradition of producing high quality weapons goes all the way back to the era of the Roman Empire when the Roman army experimented with – for the period – sophisticated firearms. We are not yet talking guns involving bullets and gunpowder. These were not developed until several centuries later. Around 400 B.C. the ancient Greeks employed a weapon referred to as “Greek fire”. It was an incendiary mixture of naphtha, sulphur, oils, pitch, turpentine, and tars filled into iron or
stone balls which were then hurled against the enemy by means of large catapults. Unfortunately for the Greeks, the weapon fell into the hands of the Romans and subsequently became their heavily guarded secret war weapon. The Romans also used giant spears, wound in tow and dipped in the mix. These were then “blown” against the enemy through hollow beams or copper barrels by means of giant bellows. The “secret weapon” unfortunately fell into the hands of the enemy and was ultimately turned against the Romans, eventually contributing to the demise of the Empire.

43
After the downfall of the Roman Empire, Italian weapon makers continued to develop ever more sophisticated slings and spring loaded heavy arms, noticeably the so-called ballista – a giant crossbow capable of firing rocks, large spears and primitive grenades quite accurately over fairly large distances. In the 1400s, the famous artist and engineer, Leonardo da Vinci, was responsible for several improvements of the ballista. That, however, was not the end of this ingenious man’s influence on the history of arms. Da Vinci was fascinated by firearms and three centuries later his design for a mortar was adopted almost unaltered for cannons used in the American civil war. Da Vinci was also the creative force behind the final design of the so-called hand cannon, which arms makers in Perugia in the Umbria region had developed already in 1364. He is also attributed with the development of the very first matchlock musket, a forerunner of the later flintlock and wheellock guns. 44
However, it was neither Perugia nor Umbria that was to become the centre for modern Italian arms industry. Instead, it was the Trompia valley in eastern Lombardy – more precisely the towns of Brescia and Gardone – that became the centre of Italian gunmaking industry and remains so to the present day. The Val Trompia is wedged between the southern foothills of the Italian Alps. It was blessed with rich resources of iron ore, endless pine forests to supply firewood, and the Mella River to provide hydro power to the many small workshops and factories that sprang up in the valley. Unfortunately, not many documents have survived which could provide details of the historic development of the gunmaking industry in Val Trompia to the present day. It is a fact, however, that the valley – particularly the town of Brescia – became a centre for a very diverse iron industry, and already during the renaissance the area was widely recognised for the reliable, often lavishly decorated guns that were produced here.
The iron mines are now closed and most of the pinewood forests are gone, but the Mella River still flows through the Trompia valley, which today is densely populated and home to hundreds of smaller and larger industrial businesses. The sporting gun industry had its heyday during the 1970s and 80s, but still today a very large proportion of the small arms produced in the world bear the signature of one of the many gunmaking firms located along the Mella river in the scenic Val Trompia. Proud traditions of artisanship do not prevent Italian craftsmen from adopting new production technologies. This has certainly also been the case in the gunmaking industry, and when dedicated craftsmanship and modern computerbased production technology unite, the result is bound to be quality of the highest order.
Beretta – gunmaking through 15 generations The most famous of present-day’s Italian gunmakers is unquestionably Beretta. Beretta is not only Italy’s but the world’s largest maker of small arms – and the oldest still in operation. Fabbrica d’Armi Pietro Beretta SpA. was founded in 1526 by one Bartolomeo Beretta when he was commissioned to produce arquebus barrels for the Arsenal in Venice. By all accounts Beretta-made barrels equipped the Venetian fleet at the famous battle of Lepanto in 1571. In 1650 the company invented the breech-loading cannon, and Beretta has supplied weapons for every major European war since! The Beretta factory’s days of glory take their beginning under the leadership of the man whose name the company still bears; Pietro Beretta. While Napoleon was waging war against the Venetians
in the late 1700s, Pietro was forced to make guns for Napoleon’s army. When peace returned to Northern Italy and the demand for military weapons dwindled, Pietro and his staff of craftsmen instead turned their skills to building high quality flintlock guns for the emerging market among Italian noblesse and shooting gentry. It was, however, not until Pietro’s son, Giuseppe joined the company that things really started to pick up. Giuseppe was able to establish the Beretta name among both European and American wealthy – who, from around the middle of the 1800s began to look to Gardone rather than London

when buying bespoke guns of the highest quality and aesthetic beauty. Giuseppe’s had a son named Pietro after his grandfather, and it is his name which to this day is engraved or stamped into every gun that leaves the Beretta factory. Inspired by the industrial revolution that took place in the USA in the early 1900s, Pietro Beretta introduced modern industrial production processes to the Beretta company. It was undoubtedly 45
In 1932, Beretta introduced their revolutionary SO over-and-under design which with very few alterations is still being produced today. Besides Browning and a few London gunmakers, no gunmaker at the time had really been successful in developing a functional over-and-under gun. Like Browning, Beretta managed to create their own unique action design – a slim, efficient and very reliable construction which since then has been copied by numerous gunmakers all over the world. Present day’s Beretta manufacturers both over-and-under, side-by-side and semi-automatic shotguns and rifles (in addition to a variety of small arms for military and law-enforcement use), but it is primarily Beretta’s unique over-andunder action design that has earned the company a strong position in every hunter’s and sport shooter’s awareness. Among sport shooters, Beretta is the leading brand globally – a result of a determined and cleverly executed marketing strategy since the 1950s. Numerous Olympic medals and international championships have been won by shooters using Beretta guns.

this early transition to modern production methods that laid the foundation for Beretta’s growth and ultimately earned the company the status which it enjoys on the international market today.
Adding everything up, the Beretta concern is the world’s largest maker of small arms today – slightly bigger than number two; the American Remington conglomerate. The Beretta group produces a total of some 700,000 handguns annually with sporting guns accounting for some 75% of the total production. Only since 1985, Beretta has supplied more than 600,000 of their famous model M9 semi-automatic pistol to the US army. Besides the mother company, the Beretta Group today comprises several internationally well-known gunmaking firms such as Italian Benelli, Franchi, and Uberti, Finnish Sako and Tikka, and
American Stoeger – as well as the two sports optics firms, Burris and Steiner. The Beretta concern is still 100% family owned, and Ugo Gussalli Beretta is still formally the head of the concern, but his sons, Franco and Pietro, are now in charge of the day-to-day running of Beretta Italia and Beretta Group respectively. 16th generation of the Beretta dynasty is already lining up to take over when the time comes as Franco and Pietro both have children who are waiting to follow in their fathers’ and forefathers’ footsteps.
Perazzi – striving for perfection The history of Perazzi begins with a 16-year old boy’s dream of one day to build the perfect shotgun. Daniele Perazzi was tired of school and via a job as a store boy he was apprenticed at one of the well-established Gardone gunmaking firms. The young Perazzi had his head full of ideas on how he could improve the design of the guns he was working on, and at the age of only 20 he had his first self-created design ready for patenting. After that, Danielle Perazzi spent all his free time on building guns of his own design. Sundays, he would be driving around to the local shooting ranges
selling his creations, and soon his reputation began to spread. In 1957, at the age of 23 and after having served in the army, he officially established his own company; Armi Perazzi was a reality. One of the most successful Italian trap shooters at the time, Ennio Mattarelli, knew Perazzi from the shooting ranges, and when Mattarelli was selected for the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, he asked Perazzi to build the perfect competition gun for him. The mission was successful, Mattarelli won the gold medal. That was the start of an unrivalled success in international shooting
competitions for Perazzi; countless championships and Olympic medals have been won during the past 50 years by athletes using Perazzi guns. Today, Armi Perazzi S.p.a. is a top modern gun factory with Danielle’s son, Mauro Perazzi at the helm. The factory only produces over-and-under guns of their own design. Even though the Perazzi name is widely associated with sports shooting, the majority of the guns produced are made for game shooting. The basic model today is known as MX2000, and like the other models in the Perazzi catalogue, it is available in a variety of different finishes.
47
Antonio Zoli – every configuration of long guns The history of the Zoli family blends with the history of the Val Trompia region and its gunmaking tradition. Records indicate that Zoli ancestors were building gun actions as long ago as year 1490. Today, Antonio Zoli S.r.l. makes a wide variety of long gun configurations, and they make them beautifully. The modern Zoli company was founded just after World War II by Antonio Zoli. Today this family-owned company is run by Antonio’s grandchild, Paoli Zoli with his two sisters, Antonella and Daniela as support. Antonio Zoli was the first Italian gunmaker to produce large bore bolt action rifles. A fact that has earned the Zoli company a special place in the minds of the big game hunting frater-
nity of the world. The company also makes a range of double rifles in both side-by-side and over-and-under configuration. More than 80% of the production is sold to customers outside
Abbiatico & Salvinelli (FAMARS) – reaching for the stars The gunmaking firm Abbiatico & Salvinelli was founded in 1967 by Mario Abbiatico and Remo Salvinelli. The firm also uses the trade name FAMARS, an abbreviation of Fabbrica Armi Mario Abbiatico è Remo Salvinelli. In addition to being a master gunmaker, the late Mario Abbiatico authored several books on sporting arms. In particular, his mammoth work from 1980 about Italian gun engraving received much acclaim. After Mario Abbiatico’s premature death in 1984, the business faced difficult times. Christina, daughter of Mario and only 18 years of age at the time, took over the management of the firm assisted by her brother, Paolo, while Remo Salvinelli continued to supervise 48
the production of guns. Slowly business started to pick up again but the real turning point came when Christina married Marco Cavazzoni, the owner of Il Bulino, a company that specializes in engraving work of the highest order and is responsible for decorating the Abbiatico & Salvinelli / FAMARS guns. In 2010 an old friend of the company, the American businessman Paul Mihailides, bought a share of the business and subsequently FAMARS USA was established. That really opened the doors to this very important market, and with an annual production of now over 100 handmade bespoke guns, this famous Gardone-based gunmaker is really reaching out for the stars.
Rizzini – one family, four companies The smallest of the four Rizzini companies – Fabbrica D’Armi Fratelli Rizzini Snc. – was established in 1961 by the three brothers’ uncles, Guido and Amelio Rizzini. Their company is known simply as F.lli Rizzini and is regarded by many “gun aficionados” as one of the top three Italian gunmaking firms – along with the famous names Ivo Fabbri and F.lli Piotti.
One of the best known names among Italian gunmaking firms is Rizzini. There are – literally – several reasons for this. No less than four different companies, owned by members of the same family, are trading under the Rizzini name but operating inde pendently of each other. Three brothers each has his own gunmaking firm that specializes in machine manufacture of high-quality over/under guns, they are: Batista
Rizzini, who founded the Rizzini Company in 1966, trading simply under the name Rizzini; Emilio Rizzini who founded Emilio Rizzini & C., S.n.c. in 1971, trading under the name Armi Techniche; and finally, Isidore Rizzini, trading under the name F.A.I.R. Tecni Mec, also founded in 1971. The difference between typical guns made by the three brothers’ companies is almost entirely in the finish and, to some extent, in the stock design and standard engraving patterns.
Guido and Amelio regarded guns by the famous London makers as their benchmark, but even so, they have successfully improved the design of the London type actions in various ways – patented design changes that have earned the Rizzini-name a place in the gunmaking history books. Today, the F.lli Rizzini company is managed by Guido and Amelio’s three sons, Stefano, Serafino and Franco. It is still a comparatively small business where focus remains on quality rather than volume. This is evident in the number of guns that the company turns out; at the time of writing the total production of sporting guns since the start of the business is a modest 1363 pieces.
– and all the others… A feature article about fine Italian sporting guns, unfortunately cannot offer justice to all of the dedicated craftsmen of the trade. We have decided to focus on a few of the many makers – a couple of the biggest and some of the smallest – which we believe
are representative of the many which necessarily were left out. Even though they are not mentioned, they certainly are not forgotten – Piotti, Fabbri, Bosis, Benelli, Cosmi, Bertuzzi, Fausti, Perugini & Visini, Bernadelli, Gamba – and all the others. Common to them all is the superior craftsmanship they represent, their pride of the history they share, and the deep-rooted passion for always producing the best for the many loyal users, collectors and enthusiasts across the world. 49

CTX™ MEMBRANE
The CTX™ membrane is tested to the following extreme standards: ·W atertightness: 20,000 mm water column per m2 · Breathability: 30,000 g per m2/24 hours
CTX™ Waterstop System
The letters CTX translate to Comfort, Technology, and Xtreme. The CTX™ membrane was developed using the most advanced technologies available. The membrane is completely watertight while still allowing the body to breathe. This makes the CTX™ membrane the most comfortable weather protection available – regardless of climatic conditions and temperature. CTX™ was developed specifically for use with shooting and hunting clothes. The membrane offers some unique qualities, which are particularly relevant for the hunting sportsman. In addition to being completely watertight and windproof, the CTX™ membrane is practically noiseless.
CTX™ Waterstop System CTX™ Waterstop is a system that eliminates the last remaining problem with waterproof textile clothes. When the clothes become wet outside, water accumulates at the bottom of the jacket and trousers legs. This water will subsequently permeate up into the lining and underlying clothes from where it cannot escape because of the waterproof membrane. CTX™ Waterstop System solves this problem in a simple manner. A water-repellent and waterproof barrier has been placed at the inside bottom of jackets and trouser legs. When water from the outside tries to permeate up into the lining, the barrier repels the water and the clothes stay dry inside.
The technical properties of the membrane match the highly changing conditions that apply when the hunter is either physically active or sits motionless in wait for his quarry. The high degree of breathability is important because it allows moisture-rich air to escape from the body while keeping the skin completely dry.
