Pictogram
2
Pictogram The goal of this assignment was to create pictograms of five different locations: auditorium, cafeteria, health services, library, and museum. The pictograms had to be clear and simplistic enough to be understood by a general audience. First, I began with brainstorming and sketching my initial ideas. It was a very spontaneous and free process, in which I got to explore as many possibilities as I could.
The rough idea sketches were then reduced down to ten pictograms. They were more refined and minimalistic. I tried to make the pictograms relatively international and simple in order to maximize their efficiency in readability. Thus, they were very geometric and limited to simple shapes, such as circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles. Each set of ten pictograms per category was cut down to one pictogram. The final five pictograms from each category were digitized in Illustrator and converted into vector. I decided to keep two versions of the pictograms to preserve the unique organic feeling of the first five pictograms. The vector pictograms are more practical and neutral, which create a pleasant contrast between the two sets of pictograms.

Time

Time The goal of this assignment was to analyze and express the concept of time. The students were required to follow the three stages of the project: research phase, analysis and synthesis, and final presentation.
Since the concept of time was so broad and there was no restriction to the medium, I had difficulty narrowing down my topic. I approached time in different directions, but concluded to take a more personal approach.
I was interested in how time was used in games like Supermario. I liked the idea that time was an infinite loop of restricted durations, whereas in reality, time is an indefinite continued progress of events. Nonetheless, I wanted to focus more on my personal connection to the concept of time, which was my sketchbook. As an art student, I carry around my sketchbook almost everywhere I go. I spend my free time mostly doodling, sketching, or writing on my sketchbook. This fact struck me hard and eventually pushed me to make it a main theme for this  assignment.

As the thumbnails of my sketches already represented my concept of time, they were also organized in a way that show the degrees of complexity and duration of the sketches. Each column and row represented the increasing levels of duration and complexity, respectively. Thus, the very left-top sketch was the least complex drawing and had taken the shortest time to finish. Another noticeable fact is that the more complex and time-consuming a sketch was, the darker it turned out to be.

Graphic Designer presentation
14
Graphic Designer presentation The goal of this assignment was to provide a presentational biography of the assigned graphic designer. My designer was Nigel Holmes, a British Information graphic designer. I made a Microsoft Powerpoint presentation on his biography, work, and design principles.

Stop motion
18
Stop motion The goal of this assignment was to create a stop motion video. This group project required us to cooperate and configure the sequences through video shooting and editing.
The main theme of my group was transportation. We decided not to settle on the traditional approach of filming a person’s travelling, but to add another layer of dream that the person falls into as she travels. We took the idea of transportation as a more abstract and mental journey in the person’s mind.

Dog breed identification
24
Dog breed identification The goal of this assignment was to represent the assigned breed of dog accurately with the least amount of pixels in Adobe Photoshop. The essence of gesture and recognizability was critical. Also, the image was not to exceed 16x16 pixels per icon. My breed of dog was beagle. I created five black & white and five color versions. The limitation of 16x16 pixels was difficult to overcome because of our familiarity with high resolution images.

The Conformist
28
The Conformist The goal of this assignment was to build slide compositions on ten Gepe glass slide mounts. Each slide was 1”x1.25” and the ten slides had to create a narrative sequence to represent a certain aspect or theme of the movie, ‘The Conformist’. I used charcoal dust and ink to draw on the two layers of tracing paper. The bottom layer would be only ink drawing, and the top layer would be the shades of charcoal dust. I found the cinematography in ‘The Conformist’ beautiful and wanted to capture the light in every scene. So I used two different layers of tracing paper in order to create a sense of dimensionality of light and shadow.

Human alphabet
34
Human alphabet The goal of this assignment was to create letterforms with byproducts of humans. Legibility, consistency, and harmony of each letterform must be taken into consideration. Self-portraits, body parts, and objects that are related to human were all possible media for making human alphabet.
I chose to make the alphabet by photographing the process of hand dripping coffee. Because coffee is a significant part of my and many other people’s day to day life, I figured I would use this hand dripping process of making coffee for human alphabet. The camera was set to desaturate the background in order to accentuate the process of hand dripping coffee.

Visual dialogue
38
Visual dialogue The goal of this assignment was to produce a video of performance with light and shadow. A person had to stand behind a large sheet of tracing paper, where her shadow would cast onto the translucent paper.
Instead of relying on the abstract shadows of any objects, my group decided to create a story for this short movie clip. Our main theme was the process of an apparel student designing and making dresses. We intended to make the movie light, lively and enjoyable, which affected our choice of music and pacing of the video. It is a short visual dialogue about a student’s struggle and accomplishment in “Apparhell”. We recorded the drawings of the dresses and played the clips while projecting them onto the tracing paper. Then the person behind the sheet tried to synchronize with the clips as they were simultaneously filmed together.

Artist book
44
Artist book The goal of this assignment was to create an artist book that was about our topic of interest. I picked wine as my main theme because I had have always been a fervent lover of wine. The idea of a wine tasting book settled in my mind quickly and thus, everything else fit into pieces. I used my own personal tasting notes of red wine for the  content.
