Flaherty says Canada to stay course, warns other countries on debt Spending cuts and further increases to Employment Insurance premiums will continue as planned, says Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, even as he acknowledges Canada is feeling the impact of economic troubles in Europe and the United States. Kicking off a day-and-a-half policy retreat with corporate and public policy leaders, Mr. Flaherty said it’s important that recent economic news not distract from planning for long term issues like an aging population and efforts to increase productivity. Mr. Flaherty urged countries struggling with debt issues to act quickly, and repeated his view that Canada is “not an island” that can avoid being impacted by foreign troubles. “We’re currently feeling the effects of that uncertainty, as is the rest of the global economy,” he said. “This continued uncertainty, at a time when the global economy remains fragile, poses obvious risks for Canada.” Last fall, Mr. Flaherty set out planned increases to Employment Insurance premiums – at a lower rate than
previously planned – and brought in a one-year incentive for businesses to hire new employees without having to pay EI premiums. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business is calling for that incentive to be extended and for premium increases to be reduced, but Mr. Flaherty said he’s not considering those options. This is the fifth time the finance minister has held a summer policy retreat. This year the meeting is taking place at the Wakefield Mill Inn in Wakefield, Quebec. The guest lists over the years have included CEOs of Canadian companies – both large and small – as well as economists and occasionally current and former journalists. Canadian Labour Congress economist Andrew Jackson, who attended the 2009 retreat, says he felt “outgunned” by the predominantly small-‘c’ conservative guest list. However, he said, the off-the-record discussions were candid and are likely of value to the finance minister.

U.K. riots: Three British Pakistanis killed in Birmingham
Three British Asians who were on the streets of Birmingham to protect their community from rioting groups, were killed when a speeding car mowed them down last night, making them the latest victims of the ongoing unrest in Britain. The police are treating the deaths as murder. As in London, vigilante groups have taken over some areas in Birmingham. The three Asians killed have been identified as two brothers, Shahzad and Harry Hussain and their friend Musaver Ali. The three had emerged from a mosque and were on the streets protecting their car wash company after the previous night’s violence when the incident happened, reports from Birmingham said. Kabir Khan Isakhel, a relative of one of the dead brothers told Sky News that two cars had approached at high speed and struck the three. A police spokesman said: “They were not in the way or blocking the road. The car swerved towards them. They went flying up in the air”. Murray McGregor, a spokesman for West Midlands

Somalia offers al-Shabab amnesty
Somalia’s government has offered an open amnesty to alShabab fighters after the rebels made a surprise withdrawal from the capital, Mogadishu, over the weekend. “We offer an amnesty - put down your weapons and your guns, and come and join the people and your society,” Abdirahman Osman, a government spokesman, was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency on Tuesday. “For those who have been misled by the senior commanders, now is the time to end the war,” he said. Al-Shabab, who still govern over much of southern Somalia, have waged a bloody war since 2007 to topple the Western-backed transitional government. The fighters, who had controlled around half of Mogadishu, abandoned their positions on Saturday but some units remained active within the capital. Government officials celebrated the pullout by the rebels but the fighters said it was merely “a change of military tactics.” This vacuum has left the city largely to be taken over by the African Union [AU] troops. Meanwhile, fighting was reported as rebel remnants clashed with AU-backed government troops following the pullout. Sporadic gunfire was heard in the city on Tuesday morning, according to
AFP. The 9,000-strong AU force (AMISOM) and government troops have meanwhile reinforced their hold over former al-Shabab positions in an effort to allow more aid into the famine-struck capital. “The extremists have been preventing the provision of food to hungry Somalis and this has opened up the opportunity to help many more people,” Boubacar G aoussou Diarra, the AU special representative to Somalia, said in a statement released late on Monday. AMISOM however warned people against returning to former al-Shabab-controlled areas of the “high possibility” of “roadside bombs and pockets of remaining extremist fighters,” Diarra said. The UN Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said it was assessing how the group’s withdrawal would open aid group access to the war-torn city, which about 100,000 people have fled from in the past two months to escape extreme drought. “Although it is too early to know what the impact on the overall situation is, humanitarian actors are assessing the ability to operate and/or scale up activities,” it said in a statement on Tuesday. The United Nations has officially declared famine in Somalia for the first time this century,
including in Mogadishu and four southern Somali regions. “Famine... is expected to spread across all regions of the south in the coming four to six weeks,” OCHA warned. “Cases of acute watery diarrhoea are increasing across Somalia,” it added. The UN’s food monitoring unit has described Somalia as facing the most severe humanitarian crisis in the world and Africa’s worst food security crisis since the country’s 1991-1992 famine. Parts of Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya and Uganda have also been hit by the Horn of Africa’s worst drought in decades. Source: Al-Jazeera
Yemen President Saleh leaves Saudi hospital Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh has left a Saudi hospital two months after he was badly wounded in a bomb attack, Yemen’s official news agency said. The SABA news agency confirmed on Sunday a Saudi report that the president had left hospital in Riyadh after having “recovered” from his wounds, adding that he was convalescing at a Saudi palace. “The doctors allowed him to leave the hospital for convalescence, but he will return from time to time for consultations, monitoring, and for medical tests,” the agency reported. On Saturday, a Saudi official in Riyadh told the AFP news agency: “The Yemeni president left the military hospital this (Saturday) evening at 18:00 GMT after receiving the necessary treatment and was taken to a temporary residence for a recovery period.” The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, did not say how long Saleh would stay on in the kingdom, which neighbours Yemen where an uprising against his rule broke out at the end of January. “Saleh has left hospital after his health conditions improved and is staying at the Conferences Palace in Riyadh, but he still has problems with his legs,” the Saudi official said. He said Prime Minister Ali Mujawar, who was also hit in the attack, “remains in hospital... and is expected to leave within a couple of days,” while Yemen’s consultative council head, Abdulaziz Abdulghani, was still in “intensive care.” Saleh appeared on television on July 7 for the first time since the June 3 bombing, covered in bandages. He accused “elements of terrorism” of having targeted him in the bomb attack, without specifying the identity of the assailants. Three days later, he was shown on television receiving John Brennan, The White House’s top counter-terrorism adviser. Saleh was in better shape than in his earlier appearance, although burns on his face were still visible. The White House said Brennan called on Saleh to sign a transition plan sponsored by the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council that would see him cede power within 30 days in exchange for immunity from prosecution. Since Saleh’s departure to Saudi Arabia, Yemeni vice president Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi has assumed power in Sanaa but without being designated as de facto head of state. The opposition, meanwhile, has called for the creation of an interim council, to prevent the return of Saleh who has defiantly clung to power. Since January, protesters across Yemen have been calling for Saleh to step down. The announcement about Saleh came as forces loyal to him fought in the capital with those of the Ahmar family, a major power within Yemen’s Hashed tribal confederation, witnesses said. The two sides were said to have traded fire in the Hassaba district of Sanaa, where prominent members of the Ahmar family reside. The exchange marked a second day of confrontation in the area, though there were no reports of casualties. Weeks of fighting between Saleh’s forces and those of the Ahmar family have left parts of Sanaa in ruins. The recent violence ends an uneasy ceasefire after the bombing of Saleh’s compound in June. Separately, one protester was killed and three injured in the southern city of Taiz, when forces loyal to the president opened fire to scatter an anti-Saleh demonstration, witnesses said. Pakistan : Continued from pg 3 Manmohan Singh, who also welcomed the fact that the things were moving in the right direction and reciprocated Pakistan’s desire to live in peace and harmony for regional stability. He said there was a general understanding that conflicts bring losses and leads to dependence on others. The prime minister also appreciated the Saudi government for promoting interfaith dialogue in the Muslim world. King Abdullah said he has worked hard for peace for the believers of the holy books across the world and for better relations between the Muslims and non-Muslims. Prime Minister Gilani said these were challenging times for the Muslim Ummah and wider cooperation and deeper understanding between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia were critical for the stability and prosperity of the Muslim world. The prime minister appreciated the role of Saudi Arabia for the welfare and development of the Muslim world and said there was an urgent need to ensure peaceful transformation, order, stability and unity in Islamic states. He also expressed his sense of gratitude to the people and government of Saudi Arabia for extending generous assistance to the earthquake and flood-affected people of Pakistan and pointed that the rehabilitation work was continuing at a steady pace. Prime Minister Gilani extended an invitation to King Abdullah to visit Pakistan. King Abdullah said that he would visit Pakistan at a time and date convenient to both the countries.

Turkey raises pressure on Syria Ahmet Davutoglu, Turkey’s foreign minister, has urged the Syrian government to stop its bloody crackdown on anti-government protests and take steps to begin a process of reform. Davutoglu spoke on Tuesday at a news conference in Ankara after a nearly seven hour meeting with Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president, in Damascus. He said he and Assad discussed “concrete steps” Syria should take to end its crackdown, though he offered few details of what steps the two had discussed or whether Assad had agreed to them. “We discussed ways to prevent confrontation between the army and the people in the most open and clear way,’’ Davutoglu said. “The bloodshed should end and civilian blood should be prevented from being spilled. All the steps needed for the process of reform to start should be taken.” The Turkish foreign minister said the meetings were “lengthy but friendly”, adding that he hoped Syria would return to peace and reflect political reform in the future days and weeks. Syria’s state news agency said Assad used the talks to tell Davutoglu that Damascus would “not relent in pursuing terrorist groups”. Ahead of the meeting, Turkey said it was to deliver a “strong message” to the president. Turkey, formerly Syria’s close ally and trade partner, has grown increasingly alarmed by the security forces’ use of force in the country’s anti-government protests, which activists say has claimed about 2,000 lives. As Davutoglu met Assad and the Syrian foreign minister, Walid al-Muallem, on Tuesday, the Syrian army intensified its assault on several towns in the east of the country and in the northern Idlib province, which borders Turkey. Lebanese and Syrians living in Beirut rallied in solidarity with the Syrian people on Monday. A rights group said 17 civilians
were killed in the eastern city of Deir ez-Zor, and two others in Idlib province. “At least 15 people were killed in different parts of Deir ez-Zor which has been raided by tanks and vehicles mounted with machine guns,” the UKbased Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SCHR) said in a statement, quoting activists at the scene. “A woman and a young man shot [earlier in the day] died of their wounds.” A resident said armoured vehicles had been shelling the al-Hawiqa district heavily. “Private hospitals are closed and people are afraid to send the wounded to state facilities because they are infested with secret police,” the resident told the Reuters news agency. He said at least 65 people had been killed since tanks and armoured vehicles entered the provincial capital on Sunday. The SCHR said around a dozen tanks and other armoured vehicles had attacked the Binnish and Sirmeen areas of Idlib. Asked why Binnish was stormed, a resident who fled the town told Reuters: “The whole town has been joining in night rallies after Ramadan prayers.” The Local Coordination Committees, a Syrian opposition group, said the town of Sirmeen was attacked from three sides, with troops carrying out house raids and arbitrary arrests. Tanks were also deployed in and around the city of Idlib, following big demonstrations there, the activists said. Up to five civilians were killed later during raids on villages around the besieged city of Hama on Tuesday, local activists said. The Syrian Revolution Co-ordinating Union said five bodies had been taken to the Jwash hospital in the town of Tibet al-Imam north of Hama, including two girls from the same family, six-year old Afra Mahmoud al-Kannas and 11-year old Sana Ahmad al-Kannas. U.S. court allows torture lawsuit against Rumsfeld
Two American men can go ahead with a civil lawsuit against former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, a U.S. appeals court said on Monday, over allegations they were tortured in Iraq at the hands of the U.S. military. Donald Vance and Nathan Ertel sued in federal court seeking damages from Rumsfeld and unnamed others over their roles in developing, authorizing and using harsh interrogation techniques in Iraq against them, thus violating their rights. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, based in Chicago, upheld a decision by a federal judge in Illinois to allow the lawsuit to proceed despite efforts by the former Bush and current Obama administration to get the case dismissed. The two men worked for a private security company in Iraq in 2006 and said they became concerned the firm was engaging in illegal bribery or other corruption activities. They notified U.S. authorities and began co-operating with them. In early 2006, they were taken into custody by U.S. military forces and eventually taken to Camp Cropper near Baghdad’s airport. Vance and Ertel claimed they were subjected to harsh interrogations and physical and emotional abuse. Months later they said they were unceremoniously dropped at the airport and never charged with a crime. They sued, seeking unspecified damages and saying their constitutional rights had been violated and U.S. officials knew they were innocent. The appeals court ruled that while it may have been unusual for Rumsfeld to be personally responsible for the treatment of detainees, the two men had sufficiently argued that the decisions were made at the highest levels of government. “We agree with the district court that the plaintiffs have alleged sufficient facts to show that Secretary Rumsfeld personally established the relevant policies that caused the alleged violations of their constitutional rights during detention,” the court ruled in a split decision. The three-judge panel voted 2-1 to affirm the lower court ruling. Judge
Daniel Manion dissented, saying Congress has yet to decide whether courts should have a role in deciding whether such claims against the U.S. military can be pursued. A lawyer representing Rumsfeld said the appeals court decision was a blow to the U.S. military. “Having judges second guess the decisions made by the armed forces halfway around the world is no way to wage a war,” attorney David Rivkin said in a statement. “It saps the effectiveness of the military, puts American soldiers at risk, and shackles federal officials who have a constitutional duty to protect America.” A spokesman for the U.S. Justice Department, which has been representing the former defense secretary, had no immediate comment. The Justice Department could appeal to the full appeals court or to the U.S. Supreme Court. There have been other lawsuits against Rumsfeld and the U.S. government over allegations of abuse and torture overseas, but most involved foreigners, not U.S. citizens, so federal courts have typically dismissed those cases. A district judge in Washington last week allowed a similar case to proceed involving an American translator who worked in Iraq with the U.S. military and who said he was later detained and subjected to harsh interrogation techniques and abuse. Violent protests for education reform in Chile Violence erupted on the streets of Chile’s capital and other cities Tuesday as tens of thousands of students staged another protest demanding changes in public education. Masked demonstrators burned cars and barricades, looted storefronts and threw furniture at police in Santiago. Some attacked an apartment building, throwing rocks and breaking windows. Riot police used tear gas and tanks with water cannons to push them back. By nightfall, at least 273 protesters were detained, including 73 in Santiago, and 23 police officers were injured, said Rodrigo Ubilla, a deputy interior minister. Five days after a banned march ended in nearly 900 arrests, students and teachers marched peacefully in Santiago and elsewhere in Chile on Tuesday, calling for the government to increase spending on schooling and provide “free and equal” public education. As in previous demonstrations, protesters danced, sang, wore costumes and waved signs. But then groups of masked protesters split off and tried to break through police barricades blocking the way to the presidential palace. University of Chile student president Camila Vallejos said 150,000 marched on sidestreets in the capital because the government again denied them permission to march on the main avenue. Ubilla estimated that between 70,000 and 80,000 marched in Santiago. Vallejos said the huge showing so soon after Thursday’s confrontations “reaffirms the level of approval we have and that the people keep supporting us. It’s the government that isn’t capable of conceding.” Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter said the violence shows student leaders can’t control their demonstrators. As the day wore on, the violence spread, with hooded and masked activists throwing rocks, paint, furniture and street signs at police backed by armored vehicles.
The unrest has gripped Chile for more than two months. High school and university students have refused to attend class, taken over schools and staged demonstrations to press their demand for fundamental changes in how Chile finances public education. Of particular concern, they say, is that private universities enjoying nonprofit tax status aren’t reinvesting their revenues in educational improvements as required by law. The current system also leaves underfunded municipalities in charge of high school education nationwide. This has starved most schools of resources, while leaving some wealthy neighborhood schools well off. Chile’s small upper class sends its children to private schools or even overseas for their education. Teachers union president Jaime Gajardo reiterated the students’ call for a national referendum on their demands, an idea that leaders of the governing center-right coalition have dismissed as unconstitutional and dangerous. Student leaders called on supporters to keep up the pressure through the night, spreading word on social networks to hold more potbanging protests known as “cacerolazos.” Source: Associated Press
Fukushima pay-outs could pull plug on TEPCO Tokyo Electric Power Co, the operator of Fukushima nuclear plant, has announced a $7.4bn quarterly loss mostly due to a massive provision to compensate victims of this year’s meltdown. The March disaster at the Fukushima complex in northeast Japan spawned the world’s worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl and has put the existence of Asia’s largest utility, known as TEPCO, in doubt. Tepco said it has earmarked $5.1bn to compensate the victims of the crisis, who include about 80,000 people evacuated from areas surrounding the Fukushima plant, 240km north of Tokyo. Even before the pay-out began, Tepco posted a $15 billion net loss for the year to March 31, Japan’s biggest non-financial loss, according to Reuters news agency. Toshio Nishizawa, who recently took over as TEPCO president when his predecessor quit over the nuclear disaster, said on Tuesday he still did not know how much the total compensation would be in the end, as the crippled nuclear reactors continued to spew radioactive material. He also said he did not know how much government bailout may be needed to ride out the disaster, but promised that his company was trying to take care of problems by selling assets and cutting costs. “We will put in our best effort,” he told reporters at TEPCO’s Tokyo headquarters. “We have not been able to make an assessment at this time.” TEPCO’s chances of survival improved after parliament last week passed a bailout backed by taxpayer funds and contributions from other utilities to help shoulder a compensation bill that analysts estimate could climb as high as $130bn. “It’s hard to define how much TEPCO will have to write off in losses, but the worst is yet to come,” said Yuuki Sakurai, CEO and president of Fukoku Capital Management. The company, which aims to start paying compensation in October, said its extraordinary loss for the April-June quarter also reflected rising fuel costs and and repairs totalling $1.4bn from the three damaged reactors at Fukushima. Another factor crimping TEPCO’s bottom-line is a new trend with Japanese companies of cutting back on electricity consumption by 15 per cent because of possible power shortages caused by the Fukushima problems. TEPCO said electricity sales in the fiscal first quarter slid 12 per cent from the same period the previous year and quarterly sales dropped 7 per cent to $14.7bn. Source: Al-Jazeera

London : Continued from pg 1 Ambulance Service (WMAS), said members of the public were attempting resuscitation on the men when the ambulance arrived, but that it quickly became apparent they had all suffered ‘significant injuries’. A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “Detectives investigating the death of three men following a road traffic collision in Birmingham this morning will today question a 32-year-old man on suspicion of murder”. The three men were aged 31, 30 and 20. “It’s understood the three were on foot in Dudley Road in the Winson Green area of the city when they were in collision with a car. All later died from their injuries in hospital,” the police spokesman said. “Officers arrested the man nearby and also recovered a vehicle which will be examined by forensics experts“. The three were taken to Birmingham City Hospital, where a large crowd gathered this morning at around 5.45 am and police in riot gear stood guard at the main entrance. The ambulance service said two of the men were pronounced dead soon after arriving at hospital, while a third died later in hospital shortly before 7 am this morning (local time).

Ramdan: A Month of Longing
By: Muqtedar Khan There’s hidden sweetness in the stomach’s emptiness. We are lutes, no more, no less. If the sound box is stuffed full of anything, no music. If the brain and belly are burning clean with fasting, every moment a new song comes out of the fire.
--- Jalaluddin Rumi on fasting in Ramadan.
The blessed month of Ramadan is here again. Hundreds of millions of Muslims will fast for a month. They will abstain from eating or drinking from dawn to dusk. They will stand for hours in prayers each night to remember their Lord and express their gratitude to Him, seek His forgiveness and aspire to come closer to Him. The month of Ramadan is easily the World’s largest and longest spiritual festival. Muslims strive hard in this month to re-sew the torn fabric of human spirituality even as political and material impulses asunder it. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam. The Quran instructs that its purpose is to teach Muslims self-restraint. The ritual involves systematic abstinence of things normal to body, mind and spirit. From dawn to dusk the limits are clear; no eating, no drinking, no sex, no fighting, no backbiting, no lying, no anger, no arrogance, no pride, no despair. In this month the sovereignty of the spirit over the body and the mind is reasserted to restore the divine order of things. The point of the exercise for adult Muslims, who are healthy and able, is to
develop a regimen of self-restraint and to inculcate a capacity to, borrowing a term from Plato, control one’s appetites. The hope is that this mandatory regimen will become a habit and Muslims will spend the rest of the year in a state of high spiritual alert. The easy part of the month of Ramadan is the physical part. After a week the body and the mind adjust and one rarely feels hungry or thirsty for most of the day. The last couple of hours are always tough, especially in the US where the days are long and the fasts last from fifteen to sixteen hours. Ramadan is also the month in which most of the Muslim holy book -The Quran - was revealed. To celebrate the revelation of the Quran Muslims devote special prayers and try to find time to reread it and to recommit to its teaching and its commandments. After fasting all day, many men and women spend two to three hours every night reciting the chapters of the Quran in either congregational or individual prayers. Muslims believe that Ramadan is a blessed month and the rewards for any good action is multiplied, so much of the annual obligatory and optional charity giving happens in Ramadan. This is a good time to do fund raising if Muslim donors are your target. Islam mandates obligatory giving of 2.5% of accumulated or surplus wealth called

Zakat, and many Muslims give it in the month of Ramadan. The more difficult parts are the one’s that demand spiritual discipline. The struggle to control one’s Id, to master one’s anger and pride, to learn humility and to recognize the insignificance of the self in comparison to the awesome majesty of God, are qualities very difficult to muster. Sufis, Islamic mystics, practice self-renunciation as a means to escape the exile from God the life really is, but rarely succeed. It is not easy to become one with God in one month. The entire purpose of the month, indeed of Islam itself is to bridge the existential gap between the created and the creator. As long as the created asserts her individual being, she remains distanced from the true Reality of being. The ultimate goal is to annihilate (Fana’a) one’s own self in order to be united with the ultimate and the universal Self. The great Sufi Ibn Arabi captured this longing for unity with the divine more beautifully than anyone. He wrote in his The Secrets of Fasting: My self, had it not been for you, I would not have been as if I were Him, were it not for you! Were it not for you! Indeed the sense of longing for a taste of the Divine is never felt more acutely than it is in the month of Ramadan. In Ramadan we control our appetite for the created things with the fond hope that desire for the Creator will finally be satiated. Those who fast with genuine dedication,
Volume 3, Book 31, Number 118: Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “Fasting is a shield (or a screen or a shelter). So, the person observing fasting should avoid sexual relation with his wife and should not behave foolishly and impudently, and if somebody fights with him or abuses him, he should tell him twice, ‘I am fasting.” The Prophet added, “By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, the smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. (Allah says about the fasting person), ‘He has left his food, drink and desires for My sake. The fast is for Me. So I will reward (the fasting person) for it and the reward of good deeds is multiplied ten times.”
those who struggle to conquer the self, those who fight to control their bodies, those who give charity and those who exercise humility; they do experience a feeling of cleansing, of purification, which is difficult to describe, but profoundly palpable. At the end of the month, for some there is a feeling of lightness, as if the weight of impurities that one had been carrying and accumulating all the yearlong has been lifted. For others there is heaviness in the heart and one prays for one more chance to maybe get it right the next time. The Birth of a Nation
Price of the Freedom On 14 August 1947, just 10 minutes before midnight, All India Radio (AIR) broadcast its last programme and thereafter, a song composed by Khawaja Khurshid Anwar was aired by the Lahore radio station. Then a minute before midnight a broadcast (in English by Mr Zahoor Ahmed and in Urdu by Mustapha ali Hamadani) informed the awaiting listeners that exactly at midnight Pakistan will emerge as an independent state on
the world map. Then at exactly at midnight 14-15 August 1947, a broadcast in English, followed by in Urdu reached the listeners “ This is Pakistan Broadcasting Service”. This broadcast was followed by recitation of Holy Quran (Surah Al Fatah 1-4) by Maulana Zahir al Qasmi. This was followed by a “na’at” by Muhammad Azam Chishti, a “qaseeda” by Hafeez Jalandhari (later the architect of Pakistan National Anthem), an orchestra composed by Khawaja Khurshid Anwar and a “qawwali” by Santoo Khan and others.14 August 1947, a day in the history when a new nation was carved out of the British India after a long
Struggle for Independence This part has been divided into various segments to conform to the developments that gradually took place between 1857 to1947 - the last century foothold of the British in the British India.
Urdu in Arabic script deepened their fears of minority status. In order to keep the Muslims in the mainstream, rose Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and
“Jange-e-Azadi” (War of Independence) Although the British Empire expanded, the native Indians never accepted their dominance. On May 10, 1857, Indian soldiers of the British Indian Army, drawn mostly from Muslim units from Bengal, rose against the British in the Meerut garrison some 80 km from Delhi and marched to Delhi. The rising was mainly to protest against the use of the newly issued rifle bullets, alleged to have a wax sealing made of the fats of pigs that was to be removed from the teeth before use. Since pigs are forbidden in the Islam, the Muslim soldiers resented its use and took up arms against their British masters. At Delhi, they captured the famous “Lal Qila” (Red Fort) and reinstated Bahadar Shah Zafar (the last Mughul monarch) to throne. Soldiers in other garrisons also followed the suit and soon much of north and central India was plunged into a year-long insurrection against the British. The British reacted and laid a siege of the Fort, which continued for a while but finally the British owing to their access to artillery and large number of forces stormed the Fort. Bahadur Shah Zafar fled to Humayun’s tomb. The British plundered Delhi and killed many Indian soldiers (and civilians) and artillery was set up in the main mosque in the city to bombard suspected localities, specially the homes of the Muslim nobility. The British forces also arrested Bahadur Shah and days after the arrest, a British officer William Hodson shot Shah’s sons Mirza Moghul, Mirza Khizr Sultan, and Mirza Abu Bakr and shamefully presented their heads to the Shah.
Ali Garh to Muslim League As a consequence to 1857 events, the British government brought India under the direct control of Crown and a Viceroy was appointed to represent the Crown. They also increased the number of British soldiers in relation to native and allowed only British soldiers to handle artillery. In 1877 Queen Victoria took the title of Empress of India. Bahadur Shah was exiled to Rangoon, in Burma where he died in 1862, finally bringing the Mughal dynasty to an end. Although the “Jange-e-Azadi” (Liberation War) was brutally quelched, the spark for independence and throwing away the yoke of slavery at the hands of the British had been ignited. While the War of Independence had many repercussions, the intolerance towards the Muslims by the British increased manifold and the Muslims felt deprived and left out in fields of education and representation in government service. Attacks by Hindu fundamentalists against religious conversion, cow killing, and the preservation of
launched a movement for Muslim regeneration that culminated in the founding of the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College at Aligarh in 1875 (later renamed Aligarh Muslim University in 1921). Its objective was to educate Muslims by emphasizing the compatibility of Islam with western knowledge. On 30 December 1906 the All-India Muslim League was founded to safeguard the interests of the Muslims. A delegation also met with the viceroy, Gilbert John Elliot, seeking special considerations in government service and electorates. This had positive effect and in 1911 When King-Emperor George V visited India, he announced the reversal of the partition of Bengal and the transfer of the capital from Calcutta to present day New Delhi.
Jinnah and Pakistan Movement Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who had initially joined the Congress was grossly dissatisfied with the Congress attitude towards Muslims and thus joined the Muslim League in 1913. It was with his efforts that Congress recognized the separate position of the Muslims and the Muslims’ demand for a separate electorate as a part of the Lucknow Pact. However the Hindu prejudice against the Muslims could not be hidden for long and the publication of Nehru Report (1928) was a great setback to Lucknow Pact, since the Nehru Report negated all its clauses. It became evident that Congress and Hindus wanted to become the ruler of India on the basis of numerical strength and make Muslims their subjects. This was not acceptable to Muslims since they had ruled India for centuries and after British subjugation, they were again to fall under the Hindus as their subjects. Jinnah therefore refused to accept the report and presented his famous 14 Points to solve the political problems in India. The Muslims wished that their separate identity should be recognized and provided constitutional safeguards to protect their rights. It was then that the first proponents of independent Muslim nation began to appear. Among the first of these was writer/ philosopher Allama Iqbal, who felt that a separate nation for Muslims was essential
in an otherwise Hindu-dominated subcontinent. The cause found a leader in Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who became known as Father of the Nation and eventually persuaded the British to partition the region into Muslim-majority Pakistan, and Hindu-majority India. In the meantime Choudhary Rahmat Ali a ambridge student coined the word “PAKISTAN” for a would-be Muslim country, which was published on 28th January 1933 in the pamphlet “Now or Never.” He made the name an acronym of the different states/ homelands/regions, which broke down into: P(Punjab), A(Afghania - a reference to the North West Frontier Province), K(Kashmir), S(Sindh) and TAN(BalochisTAN), thus forming “’PAK - STAN’”. An “i”’ was later added to the the name to ease pronunciation, producing “PAKISTAN.”
The Lahore Resolution The British Government under the new constitution held the elections in 1937, in which Congress gained majority and formed government in six large provinces. In connivance with the government, Hindus started persecuting the Muslims and Hindi was introduced instead of Urdu. The introduction of “Bande Matram”, the Hindus’ national anthem did the rest. Therefore, the Muslim League decided to ask for a separate homeland for themselves as by now it was clear that both Hindus and Muslims could not co-exist under one flag. In the 27th annual session on 23 March 1940 at Lahore, the Muslim League under Jinnah demanded a separate homeland for the Muslims of Indian sub-continent. Thereafter, Muslims all over India were asked to join Muslims League to safe guard their identity. In the meantime the 2nd world War had already started and the British government wanted whole hearted Indian support, therefore the Viceroy promised that the constitution would be framed in consultation with representatives of the people after the war. In 1942 Sir Stafford Cripps proposed dominion status to India under British Crown. While Congress rejected the proposal since it wanted full control over the affairs of the government, Muslim League rejected it since it didn’t promise a separate homeland for them. Thereafter between 1942-45 many attempts were made to break the deadlock, but the Congress refused to accept the separate identity for the Muslims. This further united the Muslims, which resulted into land slide victory for Muslims in 1945-46 elections. It clearly showed that Muslims were a separate entity and that their demand for a separate homeland was just.
The Final Days The one year period between 1946 till partition of India was very confusing, disturbing and crucial for the future of the Muslims. The British now realized that Muslims were a powerful entity and could not be ignored. But at the same time they never wanted to annoy the Hindus who
and tiring struggle of Muslims of India. For years since 711 AD, when Muhammad Bin Qasim invaded the Indian sub-continent, Muslims had been the rulers till subjugated by the British in 1857. Therefore, the independence in 1947 from the British yoke was a God-given opportunity to live as per the aspirations of Islamic values. From 1947 till date, Pakistan’s history has seen many ups and downs, finally losing half of it in 1971. The history of Pakistan can easily be divided into roughly 10-years brackets, each having own peculiarities and repercussions on its future. were in majority. Therefore in 1946, a delegation from England arrived with three suggestions: (1) The Constituent Assembly
should prepare the constitution, (2) Adoption of federal form of government and (3) British India to be divided in three groups: (a) First Group - Muslim majority provinces of Bengal and Asam, (b) Second Group - Punjab, NWFP, Sind and Balochistan and (c) the Hindu majority Third Group. All groups should compulsorily remain in the Federation for TEN YEARS, after which they had the choice to get separated and become independent. Congress obviously rejected the proposal since it saw creation of Pakistan after ten years while Muslims rejected it since they could not wait for ten years. Therefore Muslim League started a country wide campaign to expose the covert collaboration between the Congress and the government. After the failure of a provisional government in 1946, where Congress and League members could not sit together, on 20 February 1947 the British Prime Minister Lord Attlee declared that British government would transfer power to people of subcontinent by June 1947. However the new Viceroy Lord Mountbatten assessed that there was no hope for a political reconciliation and only solution was division of British India into two independent states; Bharat (India) for Hindus and Pakistan for Muslims. On June3, 1947, the partition of British India and establishment of Pakistan on 14th August 1947 was announced.
End of an Empire With the creation of Pakistan on 14 August 1947, the British Indian Empire faded into the history. But left behind many scars that still haunt peace and stability in the region. Kashmir being the major dispute because of which not only peace in the region is unattainable but has brought India and Pakistan face to face on a number of occasions. The latest escalation in year 2002 almost brought the two nations at brink of war and at a nuclear flash point. So long the dispute remains unresolved, no worthwhile peace can be ensured in the region and people of both countries would continue to suffer. Source: http://www.pakistanpaedia.com/ hist/hist3.html

Message from the Consul General on the Occasion of Independence Day of Pakistan As Pakistanis around the world, living at home or abroad, celebrate 64th Independence Day of Pakistan, I, on behalf of all members of the Consulate General, take this opportunity to wish all my Pakistani sisters and brothers a very happy Independence Day. Freedom is a blessing and it was achieved after monumental struggle and great sacrifices rendered by our forefathers under the dynamic leadership of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. We must cherish and celebrate this hard-earned freedom and we must also keep striving for the progress and development of our country. Pakistan is proud of its expatriate community. The community plays an instrumental role in projecting Pakistan as a tolerant, moderate and progressive nation. Let us all celebrate this day with the resolve to working together to make Pakistan a flourishing and prosperous nation.
To My Dear Respected Brothers and Sisters On behalf of the board and trust of Pakistan-Canada Association I wish to extend my best to you and your family for a happy Independence Day of Pakistan. As Pakistanis living abroad it is important that we remember and acknowledge this momentous occasion in our history. The struggle of countless men, women and children to establish a separate homeland under the leadership of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah was extraordinary and remains an inspiration to us all. As Pakistanis we are all ambassadors for our motherland and must carry that responsibility with honor and duty. Our country continues to go through periods of prosperity and turmoil and as its kinfolk we feel every bump in the road. Regardless of the physical distance we have placed between ourselves and Pakistan we still have her in our hearts and minds. It is on this day that we stop and acknowledge a country born from the vision of a legendary poet and the courage of a revolutionary leader. Kindest Regards, Mohammad Arfan Malik President Pakistan Canada Association

Pakistan as a nation has been going through some serious crises in the past few years, ranging from unrest in Northern Areas, to the 2010 disastrous flooding across the country. As Pakistani Canadians, we not only have to the responsibility of being faithful and loyal to Canada but also represent our distinct cultural identity in a positive manner. I am very proud that I am a Muslim and Pakistani Canadian, and it is my duty to promote not only the Canadian values but also our Pakistani businessmen community, that is serving Canadians day and night. Keep up the good work not only for the Miracle, but for all. United we stand, divided we fall. Now that the Holy Month of Ramadan has in the middle, let us remember the Ummah while we do Ibadah and pray for all Muslim Ummah across the globe, whether they are victims of natural or man-made disasters. Also, I will encourage everyone to give as much as they can in charity

Road to Independence On 3 June 1947, Viscount Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last British Governor-General of India, announced the partitioning of the British Indian Empire into an India and Pakistan, under the provisions of the Indian Independence Act 1947. At stroke of midnight, on 15 August 1947, India became an independent nation. This was preceded by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s famous speech titled Tryst with
Migration and Pakistan By: Zafar Chaudhry Migration has been a constant in the history of Pakistan. From its inception, its people have been moving in migratory waves. This migration of people started with the moving of millions of people from India into Pakistan when the two nations gained their independence from British colonial rule. These Muslims moved to Pakistan in hopes of a better life, not just economically but socially and religiously as well. As the population in Pakistan swelled with the movement of people from south to north, the masses also started an internal migration from the rural areas to the urban. Between 1951 and 1981, the urban population quadrupled. The annual urban growth rate during the 1950s and 1960s was more than 5 percent. This figure dropped slightly in the 1970s to 4.4 percent. Between 1980 and early 1994, it averaged about 4.6 percent. By early 1994, about 32 percent of all Pakistanis lived in urban areas, with 13 percent of the total population living in three cities of over 1 million inhabitants each--Lahore, Faisalabad, and Karachi. The key reason for the migration of rural dwellers to urban centres has been the limited opportunity for economic advancement and mobility in rural areas. Much of this stagnation has been caused by the firmly entrenched feudal practices of landlords in the countryside. The next wave of migration has then been the move from urban centres in Pakistan to urban centers overseas, especially the Middle East. The Middle East, with its vast oil wealth, has provided many opportunities for overseas labourers to work and earn a living building and maintaining infrastructure in various Arab states, especially in the Persian Gulf. The migration to the Gulf began in the 1970s. The government set up a program under the Ministry of Labour, Manpower, and Overseas Pakistanis
to regulate this migration. With the construction boom in the Gulf states at that time, labour jobs were plentiful and Pakistani men were more than willing to go. By the mid-1980s, when this temporary migration was at its height, there were an estimated 2 million Pakistanis in the Persian Gulf states making up the largest group of foreign workers. These men were remitting more than US$3 billion every year to Pakistan. At its peak, this money accounted for almost half of Pakistan’s foreign-exchange earnings. By 1990, new employment opportunities were decreasing, and the 1990-91 Persian Gulf War forced many workers to return quickly to Pakistan. Workers have only slowly returned to the Gulf since the war ended. In early 70s another wave of migrants moved to the US, UK, Canada & Australia and even non-English speaking countries like France and Germany. From 2002 to 2005 Pakistan was the 3rd biggest source of Canadian Immigration. People under family, Skilled and business class migrated to Canada and settled in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia.
destiny. “At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance..... We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again. ” Prime Minister Nehru and Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel invited Lord Mountbatten to continue as Governor General of India. He was replaced in June 1948 by Chakravarti Rajagopalachari. Patel took on the responsibility of unifying 565 princely states, steering efforts by his “iron fist in a velvet glove” policies, exemplified by the use of military force to integrate Junagadh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Hyderabad state into India. The Constituent Assembly completed the work of drafting the constitution on 26 November 1949; on 26 January 1950 the Republic of India was officially proclaimed. The Constituent Assembly elected Dr. Rajendra Prasad as the first President of India, taking over from Governor General Rajgopalachari. Subsequently, a free and sovereign India absorbed two other territories: Goa (liberated from Portuguese control in 1961) and Pondicherry (which the French ceded in 1954). In 1952, India held its first general elections, with a voter turnout exceeding 62%; in practice, this made India the world’s largest democracy.

Economy of Pakistan In 1947 only some 5 percent of the large-scale industrial facilities in British India were located in what became Pakistan. The country started with virtually no industrial base and no institutional, financial, or energy resources. Three small hydroelectric power stations provided limited electricity to a few urban areas. Firewood and dung were the main sources of energy; commercial energy sources supplied only about 30 percent of the energy consumed. Further, there was a shortage of management personnel and skilled labor. Despite being a very poor country in 1947, Pakistan’s economic growth rate was better than the global average during the subsequent four decades, but imprudent policies led to a slowdown in the late 1990s. The economy has suffered in the past from decades of internal political disputes, a fast growing population, mixed levels of foreign investment, and a costly, ongoing confrontation with neighboring India. However, IMF-approved government policies, bolstered by foreign investment and renewed access to global markets, have generated solid macroeconomic recovery the last decade. Substantial macroeconomic reforms since 2000, most notably at privatizing the banking sector have helped the economy. Pakistan has seen a growing middle class population since then and poverty levels have decreased by 10% since 2001. GDP growth, spurred by gains in the industrial and service sectors, remained in the 6-8% range in 2004-06. In 2005, the World Bank named Pakistan the top reformer in its region and in the top 10 reformers globally. Islamabad has steadily raised development spending in recent years, including a 52% real increase in the budget allocation for development in FY07, a necessary step toward reversing the broad underdevelopment of its social sector. The fiscal deficit - the result of
chronically low tax collection and increased spending, including reconstruction costs from the devastating Kashmir earthquake in 2005 was manageable. Development in urban areas of Pakistan has remained high but is low in rural areas. Inflation remains the biggest threat to the economy, jumping to more than 9% in 2005 before easing to 7.9% in 2006. In 2008, following the surge in global petrol prices inflation in Pakistan has reached as high as 12.0%. The central bank is pursuing tighter monetary policy while trying to preserve growth. Foreign exchange reserves are bolstered by steady worker remittances, but a growing current account deficit - driven by a widening trade gap as import growth outstrips export expansion could draw down reserves and dampen GDP growth in the medium term. Industries: Mining and quarrying account for a small percentage of gross domestic product and of total employment. Manufacturing, however, accounts for a healthy proportion. The beginning of the main industrialization effort dates to the cessation of trade between India and Pakistan in 1949 soon after the two countries gained independence. Initially it was based on the processing of domestic agricultural raw materials for the home market and for export. This led to the setting up of cotton textile mills—a development that now accounts for a large part of the total employment in industry. Woolen textiles, sugar, paper, tobacco, and leather industries also provide many jobs for the industrial labour force. Other thriving industries include textiles and apparel, food processing, pharmaceuticals, construction materials, paper products, fertilizer, and shrimp.

Agriculture of Pakistan
Agriculture constitutes the largest sector of our economy. Majority of the population, directly or indirectly, dependent on this sector. Pakistan is one of the world’s largest producers and suppliers of the following according to the 2005 Food and Agriculture Organization of The United Nations and FAOSTAT given here with ranking: Chickpea (2nd), Apricot (4th), Cotton (4th), Sugarcane (4th), Milk (5th), Onion (5th), Date Palm (6th), Mango (7th), Tangerines, mandarin orange, Clementine (8th), Rice (8th), Wheat (9th), Oranges (10th) Pakistan ranks fifth in the Muslim world and twentieth worldwide in farm output. It is the world’s fifth largest milk producer. Pakistan’s principal natural resources are arable land and water. About 25% of Pakistan’s total land area is under cultivation and is watered by one of the largest irrigation systems in the world. Pakistan irrigates three times more acres than Russia. Agriculture accounts for about 23% of GDP and employs about 44% of the labor force.
Crops The most important crops are wheat, sugarcane, cotton, and rice, which together account for more than 75% of the value of total crop output. Pakistan’s largest food crop is wheat. In 2005, Pakistan produced 21,591,400 metric tons of wheat, more than all of Africa (20,304,585 metric tons) and nearly as much as all of South America (24,557,784 metric tons), according to the FAO.
Pakistan has also cut the use of dangerous pesticides dramatically. Pakistan is a net food exporter, except in occasional years when its harvest is adversely affected by droughts. Pakistan exports rice, cotton, fish, fruits, and vegetables and imports vegetable oil, wheat, cotton, pulses and consumer foods. The country is Asia’s largest camel market, second-largest apricot and ghee market and thirdlargest cotton, onion and milk market. The economic importance of agriculture has declined since independence, when its share of GDP was around 53%. Following the poor harvest of 1993, the government introduced agriculture assistance policies, including increased support prices for many agricultural commodities and expanded availability of agricultural credit. From 1993 to 1997, real growth in the agricultural sector averaged 5.7% but has since declined to about 4%. Agricultural reforms, including increased wheat and oilseed production, play a central role in the government’s economic reform package. Much of the Pakistan’s agriculture output is utilized the country’s growing processed-food industry. The value of processed retail food sales has grown 12 percent annually during the Nineties and was estimated at over $1 billion in 2000 though supermarkets accounted for just over 10% of the outlets. The Federal Bureau of Statistics provisionally valued major crop yields at Rs.504,868 million in 2005 thus registering over 55% growth since 2000 while minor crop yields were valued at Rs.184,707 million in 2005 thus registering over 41% growth since 2000.

million goats and 0.8 million camels. In addition to these there is a vibrant poultry sector in the country with more than 530 million birds produced annually. These animals produce 29.472 million tons of milk (making Pakistan the 5th largest producer of milk in the world), 1.115 million
tons of beef, 0.740 million tons of mutton, 0.416 million tons of poultry meat, 8.528 billion eggs, 40.2 thousand tons of wool, 21.5 thousand tons of hair and 51.2 million skins and hides. The Food and Agriculture Organization reported in June 2006 that in Pakistan, the world’s fifth largest milk producing country, government initiatives are being undertaken to modernize milk collection and to improve milk and milk product storage capacity. The Federal Bureau of Statistics provisionally valued this sector at Rs.758, 470 million in 2005 thus registering over 70% growth since 2000.
According to the Economic Survey of Pakistan, the livestock sector contributes about half of the value added in the agriculture sector, amounting to nearly 11 per At its simplest, Pakistani cooking today cent of Pakistan’s GDP, which is more than the crop consists of staple foods which are cheap and abundant. the Prophet Ibrahim’s readiness to obey God even to the point of being willing to sacrifice his son, is observed by the sacrifice of a goat, a lamb, or a cow from which special dishes are made. On Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the end of RAMADAN, the month of fasting in the Islamic Calendar, the serving of a special dessert of vermicelli cooked in milk is a must. Almond and pistachios are added as decorations as is the silver foil. The latter is so thin that it will disintegrate unless it is immediately transferred from the protective layers of paper onto the dish. Food and The Moghul Emperors A style of cookery called Moghlai’ evolved at the Moghul court and even today it remains centered in Lahore. Some latterday and widely known survivors of court cookery are, for example, chicken tandoori, a dish in which chicken is cooked at low temperatures in special ovens called TANDOORS, and murgh musallum’ in which the whole chickens are roasted with special spices and ingredients. SHAHI TUKRA, a dessert of sliced bread, milk, cream, sugar and saffron, is another leftover from the days of the Moghuls. Fruit drinks, squeezed from pomegranates, apples, melons, and mangoes, and called SHARBAT, are an important part of the Moghlai cuisine and, indeed, the inspiration for American “sherberts.” Ceremonial occasions such as weddings have inspired a number of fancy dishes. A traditional dish at marriage feasts, for example, is chicken curry with either PILAU or Biryani. Firini, made from cream of rice and milk, is an equally traditional wedding dessert. It is served in clay saucers topped by silver foil.

By Tariq Mian Happy 64th birth day to Pakistan: A country with a proud population of more than 170 million is currently going through a difficult phase; has been facing some real challenges needing an early addressal sooner the better. Nevertheless, the proud nation still feels lucky enough to have its own homeland after a long struggle. Chronologically speaking, the Moughals (the Muslim emperors) ruled the Indian subcontinent before the East India Company from Britain intruded into India. The emperors lost power during the 1857 uprising. As the frustrated people of united India hated the British rule, the uprising became a large scale armed freedom struggle against the British Raj, which eventually turned into a messy freedom movement leading to independence of India in the later years. Soon it was followed by another freedom struggle but in a peaceful manner. The struggle was led by the Indian National Congress (a political party). Muslim leaders Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and Syed Ameer Ali worked diligently for the Muslim people’s political advancement. Later on, in the late 1930s - the Muslim League, another political party, gained popularity, amid fears of ‘under representation’ and an ongoing neglect of Muslims in wider Indian politics. The word Pakistan is a conjunction of two words Pak meaning “Pure” and Stan meaning “Land,” a name suggested by Choudhary Rahmat Ali. On 29th December 1930, Allama Iqbal presented the idea of a separate State that would geographically consist of the Muslim majority areas in the subcontinent. Hence, Dr. Allama Iqbal’s presidential address called for a separate Muslim homeland in the North Western and North Eastern of South Asia. At the time, strong Hindu nationalists advocated the “Two Nation Theory,” an ideology that is accredited as being the basis for Pakistan’s creation. Mr. Jinnah supported the “Two Nation Theory” and led the Muslim League to adopt the Lahore Resolution of 1940 (Pakistan Resolution), which ultimately facilitated the birth of Pakistan. Since the British colonies were about to dissolve after the Second World War, Pakistan movement, under the leadership of Mr Jinnah, persistently asked for a greater Muslim autonomy in British India. Eventually, a
separate Muslim country became a definite outcome. And, upon creation of Pakistan, the Muslims of India were able to have gained two independent wings (one thousand miles apart). The Great Britain allowed the creation of Pakistan made up of a “flawed weld of twins” of East Pakistan with West Pakistan on August 14, 1947. Sadly, the unsupervised partition of British India resulted in deadly communal riots across India and Pakistan where millions of Muslims moved to Pakistan, and millions of Hindus and Sikhs moved to India. Post political partition, certain disputes arose over several princely states between the two neighbours - including Jammu and Kashmir issue which remains responsible for all wars so far. India claims it as inseparable and Pakistan claims it as a right. While on the contrary, the UN passed resolutions to grant right of plebiscite (self determination) to Kashmiris, India stubbornly manages to deny the right and the dispute lingers on as alive. Mockery is noteworthy: The adjacent Muslim dominated area of Kashmir headed by Hindu Raja was manipulated to be kept away from joining Pakistan, whereas far away East Pakistan was made part of Pakistan unfairly. Having been manoeuvred further, Pakistan’s union of eastern and western wings could not withstand the negative ground work against the newly born Muslim country right from the very beginning. Socio economic and political environment was the major irritation for East Pakistanis which led to violent political repression and tensions escalating into a civil war (the Bangladesh Liberation War) and the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, which sadly caused the fall of Dacca - meaning eastern wing of Pakistan was illegitimately cut off, and East Pakistan became an independent state of Bangladesh with Indian assistance of course. Pakistan suffered huge losses at the hands of its rival. There was an economic turmoil, and a series of successive political crises gave a big blow to Pakistan’s economic progress in its competition at international level. Furthermore, during the current decade, Pakistan lost over 30,000 civilians and over 5,000 soldiers and security personnel in the war on terror since 9/11. Pakistan’s total economic losses are approximately seventy billion dollars. The people of Pakistan have suffered the most at the hands of terrorism; they are still going through tough time. Though an ongoing criminal activity in Karachi is crushing the country’s commerce, yet Pakistan is about to re-emerge as an
economic power soon. Good news: Despite numerous challenges, Pakistan has a great deal of economic opportunities. It does have a bright future. The country is self-sufficient in natural resources such as, natural gas, coal, salt, limestone, marble, etc. Fortunately, natural resources/reserves are in abundance in Pakistan guaranteeing its economic empowerment depending upon an appropriate and timely injection of administrative measures into the ailing system at the earliest. Moreover, a significant amount of deposits of copper and gold , zinc and lead in Baluchistan a new gas field in Nawabshah and coal in Tharparkar, Sindh have been confirmed in recent years by Geological Survey of Pakistan and Mineral Development Corporation of Pakistan in collaboration with Mining firms from Australia, China and other nations. Reko Diq alone has the reserves estimated at “two billion tons of copper” and “20 million ounces of gold.” The value of the deposits has been estimated at about $65 billion which is enough to pay off Pak loans. Hopefully, based on preliminary data, a country-wide aerial survey can be helpful in finding many more significant mineral resources in Pakistan. The Associated Press of Pakistan quoted Prime Minister Gilani as saying that despite heavy internal and external odds, his country had made significant progress in many fields including nuclear science and Information Technology. Prime Minister feels proud that Pakistanis have made significant strides in the fields of agriculture, industry, nuclear science, information technology and communications. Luckily enough, Pakistan has been blessed with all kinds of geographical features i.e., mountains, hills, valleys, plains, rivers, ocean, farming lands, deserts, and the four seasons. Most commonly used crops of the world are produced here like, rice, cotton, wheat, sugarcane etc!
Furthermore, Pakistan is known as the best exporter of sport goods. There is good marble available, and handicraft is considered to be the best in the world as well. Historically, Pakistan’s ancient history including Mohenjo-Daro is well known. Pakistan is famous among the leading manufacturers of top quality home textiles & denim fabrics. When compared with the developed countries, a good quality education is available here at cheaper cost. In Sports, Pakistan is proud to have a few extra ordinary names in squash. Hockey has seen many achievements, so did cricket and kabadi. Don’t worry - be happy is the safest conclusion: After a nationwide destruction in Pakistan, re-construction has to begin as per the economic phenomenon. Obviously, the country is open for business, as there exists a solid commercial opportunity for internal and external investors. Furthermore, a gradually diverting trend towards “Merit only Policy” is a definite asset for “Pakistan in the making.” But, good Governance is the condition precedent here as one of the major key factors for faster recovery. Despite, Pakistanhaving been blessed with the experienced professionals, the scientific and technical knowhow, the relevant Industry, the agriculture and the natural resources/reserves, there is still a great deal of need to do more to achieve the desired goal. Obviously, a competent Judiciary has to be in place to administer justice, safeguard the Constitution and maintain Rule of Law. Additionally, a competent National Election Commission is of extreme importance in order to facilitate the election of a “sovereign parliament” from amongst the educated people of good reputation, talent and integrity. Beyond a doubt, with the above measures in place, the nation can safely expect an inflow of international investment soon enough to assist Pakistan’s emergence as highly successful State in the region.

Celebrations of Pakistan
Pakistan’s calendar features a great many festivals, both purely cultrual and also religious. Others are in memory of National Heroes or commemorate political events in the nation’s recent history. Muslim festivals are celebrated according to Muslim (Lunar) Calendar and may occur some 10 days earlier each successive Christian Year. There are several folk and festivals held regularly in every part of the country. Exact dates of such festivals are fixed annually by the District Administration of the respective area, at least a month in advance, according to the tradition. Pakistan’s main festivals are: 1 . Eid-ul-Fitr Religious festival celebrating end of fasting month on 1st of Shawwal, the 10th month of Islamic Calendar. Special prayer after sun-rise, exchange of sweet dishes, visits. 2. Eid-ul-Azha Religious festival commemorating the great sacrifice offered by Prophet Abraham. Celebrated on 10 Zilhaj,12th month of
Islamic Calendar. Collective prayers after sun set, sacrifice of goats, sheep, cows or camels and distribution of meat among relatives, friends and poor. 3.Milad-un-Nabi :
(Birthday of Prophet Hazrat Mohammad, p.b.u.h. on 12th of Rabi-ul-Awwal - the 3rd month of Islamic Calendar. 4. Christmas In Pakistan 25 December is a public holiday it is however in memory of Jinnah the founder of Pakistan. In Christian homes they celebrate christmas with the exchanging of gifts and cards, the wearing of new clothes and the visiting of houses of friends. They have a chruch service which is packed on Christmas day which is called Bara Din the big day. 5. Independence Day, Aug 14th
Meeting, processions, rallies, decorations and illustrations are held all over the country. 5. National Horse & Cattle Shows Held at Fortress Stadium, Lahore and in Jacobabad. Cattle races, cattle dances, tentpegging, tattoo show, folk music, dances, bands, cultural floats and folk games. 6. Basant Mela (Spring festival of Colors and Kite-flying) The festival is held on the second weekend of February. The skies over Lahore explode in a kaleidoscope of color. As the first kite rises over the horizon, a joust for suprem-
acy begins that brings millions of kites of all shapes and sizes, soaring to challenge it. This is a time for festivities that reflect the true Lahori spirit of good-natured competition and appetite for celebration. For a visitor, Basant is the ideal time to appreciate the mood and magic of Lahore. From the floodlit skies, the manic beat of the ‘dhol’ and cries of ‘Bo kata!’ each time the opposition loses a kite, to a constant feast that lasts an entire week. Lahore displays a charm and hospitality unmatched and unrivalled by any other city in the world 7. Sufi Festivals The fairs held at the shrines of Sufi saints are called Urs. They generally mark the death anniversary of the saint. On these occasions devotees assemble in large numbers and pay homage to the memory of the saint. Soul inspiring music is played and devotees dance in ecstasy. The music on these occasions is essentially folk and appealing. It forms a part of the folk music through mystic messages. The most important Urs are: Urs of Data Ganj Bukhsh at Lahore, Urs of Hazrat Mian Mir at Lahore, Urs of Baba Farid Ganj Shakar at Pakpattan, Urs of Hazrat Bahaudin Zakria at Multan, Urs of Sakhi Sarwar Sultan at Dera
Ghazi Khan, Urs of Shah Hussain at Lahore, Urs of Hazrat Bullehe Shah at Kasur and Urs of Hazrat Imam Bari (Bari Shah Latif) at Rawalpindi-Islamabad. A big fair is organized at Jandiala Sher Khan in district Sheikhupura on the Mausoleum of Syed Waris Shah who is the most loved Sufi poet of Punjab due to his work known as Heer Ranjha.

Miracle Exclusive:
Small Business opportunities in Pakistani Communities The Miracle (Pirzada): Let me know your name and your business name and type of business. Mohammad Pervez Mour, Baseline Clothing, before I go into the small business debate, I would like to mention here that ALLAH gives a lot of Barkat in business and nobody can deny on this fact. I believe there are lot of business opportunities in Canada especially the businesses where labor is involved. I entered into the retail business selling sportswear and also added a special service to garment printing and embroidery. I am making good money with sharing the working among my families. TM: Please list how you entered in small business industry in British Columbia; did you have any business background in past and what were the deciding factors that led you to start your business? Mohammad: There is not much money involve in this business. You can start with small business and grow gradually. This business needs no business background. I would say no business is good and bad it’s entirely up to you how you make the business success. We can see lot of good businesses is going in to bankruptcy whereas new entries are taking place in same
business. It is your determination and hard work. The only difference in business and job is to make money in business is challenge whereas money in job is certain. But in business if you are successful your income has no limit whereas in job you stay in same income level. Little bit help from the family make the life easy and comfortable. TM: How long have you been self employed and why you selected this business you are currently in? Mohammad: As most of the immigrant from Pakistan are service oriented so do I. I do not have any experience in business. After I arrived in USA like everybody I started to drive taxi because I found the only easy way to make money. When I could not control my weight I start looking other ways to make living. I found this embroidery business and I start making same amount of money with less hours. I am running this business in eight years and making good living. TM: What are the benefits and loss factors involve in Big Shopping Centre Mall and the Strip Mall in your own small business? Mohammad: In the big shopping center
Muslim sister age 42 seeking a good brother for marriage. Well educated with a good career and grounded seeking the same in a partner. Revert Muslims welcomed. mall the income start right away. But in strip mall it takes time when the people know your business. But in long run to do business in strip mall or small shopping center is better than the business in big shopping Mall. Usually in big shopping mall one has to abide by the mall rules and regulation and their time of operation. Some people take it as disadvantage. To do business in mall is safe, whereas in strip or small shopping center these are not the problem of business hours. TM: How you manage all these, what are the other advantage or side business in big shopping mall like open small Kiosk and hire students and help them in business and for theirs bread and butter? Mohammad: This is a good idea to have Kiosk in shopping mall. Some hours can be shared between you and the student. In fact to start business from Kiosk level is a great help to further enhance the business. I know many people who started the business in Kiosk and now they are running business in millions. TM: What advice would you give to Miracle readers who are interested in starting their own business? Mohammad: Like any other businesses there is lot of people involved. On each stage there is a profit margin involved. We can easily eliminate many mediators and offer good prices to the public. Good price with good quality can be a key to success. TM: Do you feel in this tensed situation of Pakistan, we can import and export with Pakistan and what type of Pakistani products demand in BC, how you can guide Pakistani or others in operating their own businesses? Mohammad: There is good potential of business for Pakistani community. Pakistan
is producing good quality cotton. Pakistani cotton based products are universally accepted as a good quality product. Only problem to do business in small scale that on small orders we cannot get good prices and quality. If we import from Pakistan in volume we be in better position to get good price and good quality. If this system is developed nobody can beat our prices and we can maximize our profit and run good business. TM: Any other suggestions that you can tell Pakistani readers for theirs benefits. Mohammad: If you compare the prices of Garments in Pakistan and the wholesale prices of the same product in Canada, there is a lot of difference. If we import from Pakistan individually the quality we get is not up to the standard. Because for small quantity we go for smaller and local manufacture, which don’t even know the standard of export product. I think this is the only big reason for the failure of most of Pakistani who did business with Pakistan and failed. But if we cover this aspect there is no reason like other communities our community will not go into the business. Big quantity we are able to place order from the registered exporter and manufacture where we can easily control the quality. If we have a right product we can make good living and can grow our business. Everybody from Pakistan has a root there and definitely wants to visit Pakistan once in year, which is not possible otherwise. But if you have business, one can spare time and money for one trip to Pakistan on business expenses. Pakistani Community will show theirs interest in small businesses in future. TM: Thanks for your tips, we hope so the Pakistani Community will show theirs interest in small businesses in future.

• The most recent record set in Pakistan was the most people crammed into a Smart car at the end of 2011, when the Pakistan Crashers crammed 19 women into a Smart car in Karachi. • Shahid Afridi, who has taken the most wickets in a Twenty20 cricket career (53), and Hanif Mohammad, who back in 1958 had the Longest individual cricket test innings, batting for 16hr 10mins and scoring 337 runs in the process playing against the West Indies. • The largest silver ring was created by master jewelers Amin and Company, weighed in at 71.68kg (158lbs), and had an inner diameter of 85cm (2ft 9in) - a fair bit larger than most people’s fingers as you can see! • Tallest mountain face: The Rupal face of Nanga Parbat is a single rise of 5000m
(16,000ft) from valley floor to the summit - with the mountain itself being the highest in Pakistan and the 8th highest in the world, with a summit at 8125m (26,656ft) above sea level. • The Largest flaming image using candles was created by 118 Sandoz employees in
Faisalabad in 2009, consisting of 35,478 candles. • The heaviest weight lifted using only the ear is 73 kg (160 lb 15 oz) by Zafar Gill (Pakistan), who lifted gym weights hanging from a clamp attached to his right ear in Lahore, Pakistan, on 3 January 2009. • The highest electronically measured speed for a ball bowled by any bowler is 161.3 km/h (100.23 mph) by Shoaib Akhtar (Pakistan) against England on 22 February 2003 in a World Cup match at Newlands, Cape Town, South Africa. • Since 1995, Dr. Muhammad Mustansar of the Children’s Hospital and Institute of Child Health in Lahore, Pakistan has been collecting pacifiers as an educational movement against them. The collection now amounts to 1,994 pacifiers of different colors and shapes, each obtained from individual mothers. • The largest tea bag was made by Lipton Yellow Label of Lever Brothers, Pakistan Ltd weighing 8.9 kg (19.62 lb) and was displayed at the Avari Towers Hotel, Karachi, Pakistan on 22 June 2002. • Network Television Marketing Ltd. created a cake measuring 32 m (105 ft) tall with 105 tiers in Faisalabad, Pakistan, on 16 August 1997. • Muhammad Ilyas passed the examination enabling him to become a Civil Judge in July 1952 at the age of 20 years 9 months, although formalities such as medicals meant that it was not until eight months later that he started work as a Civil Judge in Lahore, Pakistan.
• Abdul Sattar Edhi (Pakistan) began his ambulance service in 1948, ferrying injured people to hospital. Today, his radio-linked
network includes 500 ambulances all over Pakistan, and attracts funds of US$5 million a year. • The smallest published Koran book measures 1.7 cm x 1.28 cm x 0.72 cm (0.66 in x 0.50 in x 0.28 in). It is published in an unabridged, bound version, in fine print Arabic and is 571 pages long. • The largest victory margin is 233 runs by Pakistan against Bangladesh (320 for the loss of three wickets to 87 all out), at Dhaka, Bangladesh, on June 2, 2000. • The youngest Test player ever is Hasan Raza (Pakistan) who made his debut, aged 14 years 227 days, against Zimbabwe at Faisalabad, Pakistan on 24 October 1996. • A football made from artificial leather PV-PVC and hand-sewn by staff at Ihsan Sports of Hajipura, Sialkot, Pakistan, had a diameter of 4m (13ft 1in) when measured on 30 June 2002. • The super-sized soccer ball – an exact replica of the company’s standard football
– was made from 32 separate panels that were laminated, printed then hand-stitched together. It was unveiled at the Al Faysaliah shopping mall in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, by members of the Disabled Children’s Society. “I was amazed at the size of the football,” said one spectator, “and I imagine it would be really hard to actually play with.” • An appendix removed from a 55-year-old Pakistani man on June 11, 2003, at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad, Pakistan, measured 23.5 cm (9.2 in) in length. • Jahangir Khan is listed in Guinness Book of World Records as having the most world championship squash titles. He was unbeaten in competitive play for five years.
During that time he won 555 matches consecutively. This was not only the longest winning streak in squash history, but also one of longest unbeaten runs by any athlete in top-level professional sport. • Pakistani student Ali Moin Nawazish blazes his way into Guinness Book of World Record. Sitting seven A-levels might easily have done the trick, even though he had started to study some of the subjects only three days before the exam.
Team BC Islam participates at the 7th annual Salaam Cup in Toronto Team BC Islam returned July 18th from its inaugural participation in Toronto at the 7th annual Salaam Cup, Canada’s premier Muslim ball hockey tournament. Over 20 teams, with players from across North America attended the four day tournament this year. Team BC Islam included a roster of 16 players, from which 15 were either born or raised in British Columbia. The Salaam Cup tournament was established in 2005 by Safi Habib and Farhan Baig, two Muslim brothers in the Greater Toronto Area who recognized the high level of interest among Muslim youth towards the sport of hockey and the need to showcase the increasing talent and skills developed among Muslim hockey players. “Hockey has no religious affiliation, but it does provide a competitive outlet within a Muslim environment here at Salaam Cup,” states Farhan Baig, Tournament Organizer. The name “Salaam” was an ideal choice for
this tournament that’s focused on Muslim youth and men. The word “Salaam” translates into “Peace” in the Arabic language – a major symbol and focal point of the religion of Islam. “Salaam” or “Peace” is uttered every time a Muslim greets another around the globe. “Anyone born or raised in Canada has a natural attraction towards hockey. At Salaam Cup, we hope to build on the long traditions of road hockey and ball hockey among Muslim men and youth and make it a major athletic endeavor by Muslims from coast to coast,” adds Tournament Director Safi Habib. Team BC Islam is grateful to all its sponsors who generously donated to the team in order for the team to put forward a complete roster for this tournament. “The task was challenging, we knew we could do it, and by the grace of Allah, we were able to take a competitive team to represent BC Muslims in Toronto. The competition was
fierce, but the camaraderie developed while there, with Muslims from all over North America is what will take us back. I can’t wait until next year and growing the representation from BC,” states one of the Team BC Islam organizers Rizwaan Abbas. Team BC Islam wishes to acknowledge
our wonderful hosts, the Directors of the Salaam Cup Tournament, for the wonderful and accommodating experience. Once again, we are very appreciative of all our sponsors and hope to acknowledge them at an upcoming Team BC Islam event.
