Libyan rebels seize Gaddafi compound
Happy Eid ul Fitr to all our readers from the Miracle team and Advertisers. May Allah (SWT) accept our fasting and good deeds during the month of Ramadan and shower His blessings on all. (Ameen)
Libyan rebels have overrun the fortified compound of Muammar Gaddafi in Bab al-Azizya in the capital, Tripoli, following intense fighting with forces loyal to the Libyan leader. The rebels “broke through the gates of Bab alAzizya [and] some opposition fighters managed to enter the government’s stronghold in the Libyan capital,” Al Jazeera’s correspondent Zeina Khodr said, reporting from the compound on Tuesday. As celebratory gunfire rang out, there were reports that the compound armoury was being looted. A rebel supporter was seen kicking around a broken sculpture of Gaddafi. A local Tripoli radio station reported Gaddafi as saying that his withdrawal from his headquarters was a “tactical move after the compound was levelled by 64 NATO air strikes”. What was put out by the radio station was also reported by Al-Orouba TV broadcasting in conjunction with Al-Rai TV. The report said Gaddafi vowed “martyrdom” or victory in his fight against NATO. Moussa Ibrahim, a spokesman for Gaddafi, later said the Libyan leader was ready to resist rebels for months, or even years, and vowed to turn Libya into “volcanoes, lava and fire”. Speaking by telephone to Al-Orouba and al-Rai, Ibrahim said that Gaddafi’s forces had captured four “high ranking” Qataris and one United Arab Emirates national, and said that rebel leaders would
“I will miss him”: Jack Layton’s national “family” says goodbye First came his political family, the New Democrat MPs and staffers who called Jack Layton a brother-in-arms, a boss and a friend. By early afternoon Wednesday, it was time for Layton’s extended national family to say their goodbyes as he lay in state in the foyer of the House of Commons. Pat Kerwin, an Ottawa retiree, said he’d known Layton since he became leader. His legacy was assured, Kerwin said, thanks to his efforts rebuilding the party and at the same time building the bridge to Quebec. His record as a Toronto city politician before that extends in many directions. Waiting more than three hours to spend just moments in front of the flag-draped coffin was worth it, Kerwin said. “I’ve canvassed for him in the rain. I will stand for him in the rain.” The line of hundreds of waiting mourners soon stretched back from the Peace Tower and around the East Block of the Parliament Buildings. RCMP estimated that more than 1,500 people had moved through the foyer by late afternoon, with hundreds more still waiting. A light wind batted at orange balloons tied to the railings around Parliament Hill and many a lapel in the crowd sported a single orange rose. A cheer rose up from the crowd as Layton’s widow Continued on pg 6 Olivia and his son

Army action to weaken democracy’
The government said on Wednesday that army action in Karachi at this time would weaken democratic dispensation in the country and those calling for it had their own ulterior motives reported by Dawn. When democracy had started taking roots in the country why should some people want to drag army into every minor issue, Information Minister Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said when asked why was the government reluctant to call the army when civilian law-enforcement agencies appeared to have failed to end target killings in the city. She was briefing the media after a meeting of the cabinet presided over by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani. Ms Awan rejected a perception that the PPP-led government was not calling the army because of lack of confidence and said that because of past experiences the government had decided to go for political and long-term solutions. “It is very easy to bring temporary peace, but the government doesn’t want to repeat the history,” she said. “This is a very serious situation which the people of Karachi are facing at the moment and, therefore, stakeholders, especially the media, need to be very responsible and stay away from making nonserious statements.” The federal government was ready to take any measure sought by the Sindh government in support of its efforts to arrest criminal gangs operating in Karachi, she said when asked if the centre had any intention of taking some action on its own. Ms Awan said the cabinet had been informed by the prime minister that the Sindh government had selected nine areas for operation against killers by Rangers, police and intelligence agencies. “The government has decided to take an across the board action under which criminal elements regardless of their
political affiliation will be nabbed,” Ms Awan replied when asked if the areas belonged to a particular political party. “Being a commercial hub of the country, Karachi cannot be left at the mercy of a handful of criminals who are hiding in a population of some four million people who live in these areas,” Ms Awan said. She said the Sindh government had set up an operation room in Karachi where arrested killers and extortionists would be presented before the media. Answering a question about MQM chief Altaf Hussain’s demand for prime minister’s resignation, the information minister said the government couldn’t act on any body’s wishes. Asked about chances of the Muttahida rejoining the coalition government, she said talks between the two parties were continuing. “MQM is a political party and following its own agenda and will join the government when it feels appropriate to do so,” she added. Ms Awan said the cabinet approved financial documents for the 425MW power project in Checho Ki Malian and 525MW project in Nandi Pur. She said the secretary finance had informed the meeting that 200,000 tons of fertilisers were being imported for Kharif crops, of which 150,000 tons had already been imported. A subsidy of Rs5 billion has been given on fertilisers. APP adds: The information minister quoted the prime minister as saying that the government was aware of the Karachi situation and urged all political forces to support it to resolve the issue. The cabinet appealed to Ulema and other religious scholars to hold special prayers for peace and stability in Karachi and for the country. Ms Awan said the prime minister had apprised the cabinet of steps being taken by the government to end loadshedding. He asked the finance minister to work out an out of box solution to end power shortage. The cabinet asked the Ministry of Religious Affairs to review the draft bill for regulating Haj, Umrah and Ziarat business in Pakistan and incorporate in the bill points raised by ministers. The cabinet decided to form a committee comprising the ministers for petroleum, finance and industry to thrash out matters relating to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority. The cabinet approved formal negotiations with Latvia on an air services agreement, Pak-French joint declaration on economic and commercial partnership and signing of an agreement with Senegal on cooperation in combating illicit trafficking of narcotics and psychotropic substances.

UN orders probe into Syria rights violations
The UN Human Rights Council (HRC) has launched a new commission of inquiry into Syria’s crackdown on anti-government protesters, including possible crimes against humanity. The announcement came as rights activists on Tuesday claimed that 18 more people have been killed in the country over the past 24 hours, including seven in the city of Homs. By 33 votes in favour to four against and nine abstentions, the HRC passed a resolution to “urgently dispatch an independent international commission of inquiry... to investigate violations of international human rights law in Syria since July 2011”. “The resolution is adopted,” Uruguay’s ambassador Laura Dupuy Lasserre who chairs the council, announced after the vote. The remaining countries on the 47-nation council abstained or were absent. China and Russia said they opposed the measure as unnecessary intervention. Fayssal al-Hamwi, the
Syrian Ambassador, called the action “100 per cent political”. The security crackdown continued in key areas across the country, Al Jazeera’s Nisreen el-Shamayleh said, reporting from Ramtha on the Jordan-Syria border on Tuesday. “We undersand that at least 55 tanks are currently raiding the town of al-Khowria in Deir ez-Zor. These tanks are shelling some of the neighbourhoods there,” Shamayleh said. “We also heard that some of the soldiers reportedly descended from two helicopters down to al-Khowria in that neighbourhood. An attack is ongoing there. “We have also understood that the troops are destroying the homes and burning them and many arrests were made and the residents protested the attacks by taking to the streets.” Meanwhile, Robert Ford, the US ambassador to Syria, made a surprise visit to Jassem, an area in the southern Deraa province which has seen some of the worst violence. Ford
angered Damascus seven weeks ago when he paid a visit to Hama in a gesture of solidarity with the city where huge anti-Bashar al-Assad protests occurred in June and July. Western nations have circulated a draft UN resolution that calls for sanctions against the Syrian president, influential members of his family and key associates. US and European delegations hope to put the draft resolution to a vote in the 15-nation Security Council as soon as possible. The sanctions are the Western nations’ response to Damascus’ five-month crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators, which the UN says has left 2,200 civilians dead. But Russia, which has veto-power, said it does not think sanctioning Damascus is the right approach at the moment. The resolution, drafted by Britain, France, Germany, Portugal and the United States and ob-
tained by Reuters news agency on Wednesday, says the council “strongly condemns the continued grave and systematic human rights violations by the Syrian authorities” and “demands an immediate end to the violence.” While it would call for freezing Assad’s financial assets, as it does for 22 other Syrians, it excludes him from the list of Syrians facing an international travel ban. African leaders to pledge funds for Horn drought crisis African leaders met Thursday to pledge funds to tackle the famine in Somalia and extreme drought across the Horn of Africa which are putting millions of people at risk of starvation. African Union Commission chairman Jean Ping appealed to the continents’ leaders and the international community to assist more than 12 million drought-hit people in the region, during a pledging conference in the Ethiopian capital. “(I) wish to make this clarion call to all Africans to act out against hunger by providing both cash and in-kind support for urgent life-saving assistance to our brothers and sisters in the Horn of Africa,” Ping said in a statement. Some 12.4 million people in the Horn of Africa, including parts of Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya and Uganda, are affected by the worst drought in decades in the region and are in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN. The demands are huge, with a $1.1 billion shortfall from a total $2.4 billion needed, according to UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Somalia is the worst hit, with several southern regions in famine, where more than 390,000 children are at risk of dying from malnutrition, according to OCHA. The UN has described Somalia, where a civil war has been going on since 1991, as facing the most severe humanitarian crisis in the world. The conference will be attended by the AU representative to Somalia and former Ghanaian president, Jerry Rawlings, as well as the deputy secretary general of the United Nations, Asha Rose Migiro, AU spokesperson Nabo Sene told AFP. “African countries should be proactive in addressing the drought situation in the affected states,” the AU said in a statement. The conference will give a “concrete expression of solidarity” from other African nations and the drought-hit regions, it added. Also expected to attend are leaders of African economic blocs and heads of state from East Africa’s Intergovernmental Authority on Development, which includes Uganda, Kenya, Djibouti, Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia. But a pan-African fundraising campaign, Africans Act 4 Africa, has criticized African governments and the AU for not responding quickly enough to the crisis. “The overall international donor response to this humanitarian crisis has been slow and inadequate,” the organization said in a statement. “Contributions (have been) too modest to decisively change the conditions for the millions who need this support.” Organizers of the campaign said the African community should offer a minimum of $50 million to relief efforts. The African Union has so far pledged $500,000. “This was a preventable catastrophe. It is an extreme example of our broken food system. Droughts may be inevitable in this region, but disasters are not,” the coalition of civil society groups that make up the fundraising campaign added. “Decades of marginalization, neglect and under-investment in pastoralists and smallholder food producers, many of them women, have contributed to the current crisis.” Last week the Organization of Islamic Co-operation pledged $350 million to assist drought-struck Somalis. Ping was in Mogadishu last Saturday, where he met with famine victims and called for a strengthening of the Djibouti Accord and the Kampala Accord, which call for peace in the country. Relief agencies have boosted aid delivery to the affected population, but insecurity in one of the world’s most dangerous countries is hobbling a wider reach. Last week Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan toured Mogadishu on the first visit to the war-torn city by a major leader in almost 20 years, calling the situation in Somalia “a problem for all humanity.” Source: Al-Jazeera
Plane crash in Canadian Arctic kills 12 At least 12 people have been killed and three others injured after a chartered Boeing 737-200 plane crashed in Canada’s Arctic region, police say. The crash on Saturday happened as the aircraft was approaching the airport in Resolute Bay, home to one of Canada’s most northerly communities.
HST vote results due Friday Two years after ex-premier Gordon Campbell shocked the province by announcing the harmonization of B.C.’s tax system, British Columbians will learn Friday the fate of the controversial HST. Elections B.C. said Wednesday that results of the historic mail-in referendum will be released sometime Friday morning, a day after the initial target date of Aug. 25 and three weeks after voting closed. The long-awaited results will be critical to both of B.C.’s main political parties who sat at opposite ends of the HST debate and, at times, used it as a platform for campaign-like posturing, experts say. “It’s had an enormous impact on both parties,” said University of Victoria political scientist emeritus Norman Ruff. “Especially for the government because public policy has been on hold for almost a year.” Defeat of the 12-per-cent tax would be a major blow to premier Christy Clark’s Liberals who introduced several so-called fixes to the tax earlier this year in a last-ditch effort to keep it alive. “It’s not quite Humpty Dumpty, but it comes close in terms of putting their budget together again,” said Ruff. Should the tax survive, however, it would signal that her efforts had been successful and that the public was on side, increasing the likelihood of an early election call before the set 2013 date. “It shows not only that the government is listening to the people, but that the people were listening to the government,” said Ruff. A win for antiHST forces, meantime, would send B.C. into unchartered territory while undoubtedly placing Adrian Dix’s New Democrat party in a position of strength heading into the fall session of the legislature. There has been no word on how the voting has gone, however, pundits and politicians heading into the final stretch have
maintained that it will be close, likely differing by only a few percentage points. Elections B.C. estimates that 1.6 million people voted in the referendum, representing about 52 per cent of the electorate. Under the Referendum Act, one side must have more than 50-per-cent support before being declared a winner. Elections officials said the Chief Electoral Officer determines whether or not there will be a recount. Fight-HST leader and ex-Socred Premier Bill Vander Zalm said he is confident the HST will be defeated, returning the province to the former five-per-cent GST and seven-per-cent PST system. “I’ve never had a doubt, from the very beginning,” said Vander Zalm. “I’ve always been optimistic about the results, and I don’t think that’s changed even though the government poured a whole lot of money -- as did the big business alliance -- into advertising.” Premier Clark and Finance Minister Kevin Falcon are expected to make separate announcements Friday after the results are made public. The B.C. NDP and Fight-HST group are also expected to release statements. Clark and Falcon have said in the past that they abide by the results should the HST fall. Falcon has estimated defeat will cost B.C. an estimated $3 billion, $1.6 of which will have to be repaid to Ottawa. An independent report into the HST has estimated it will take several years to return to the old PST/GST system. Source: The Province

Yemeni leader vows to return ‘home soon’
Ali Abdullah Saleh, the Yemeni president recovering in Saudi Arabia from wounds sustained in an attack on his palace in June, has vowed to return home soon. Saleh, who appeared in good shape compared with previous appearances, spoke on Tuesday in a televised address. The president renewed his calls for early presidential elections, telling supporters: “See you soon in the capital Sanaa.” He also blasted the opposition, saying they were made up of the “leftovers of Marxists, the Taliban and the imamate,” Yemen’s ousted monarchist rulers. Parliament’s Common Forum opposition is due to meet on Wednesday to elect an umbrella “national council” aimed at taking over power in the absence of the president. The United States and Saleh’s Saudi hosts have pressured him to remain in Saudi Arabia, fearing his return to Yemen could spark a civil war. Saleh said he was willing to transfer power to his vice-president if the opposition pulls armed tribal fighters from the streets and the opposition ends its street rallies, the Associated Press news agency reported. Saleh’s address came as fierce clashes overnight between tribesmen and Yemen troops left 23 tribesmen dead, according to a tribal source. “Twenty-three of our fighters were killed in fierce overnight clashes with the Republican Guard,” said the source from the Bakil tribe, adding that the worst fighting was concentrated in the area of Sheheb Arhab. The trouble began last week after the elite Republican Guard, which is led by Saleh’s son, Ahmed, installed a checkpoint that allegedly harassed residents of the area that is considered the northeastern gate to Sanaa. The source said troops chased tribesmen to their villages after few skirmishes, adding that the Republican Guard and the army had recently deployed reinforcements in Arhab, which lies 40km outside Sanaa. Tribal sources claimed that the army was planning a war against the Bakil tribe, Yemen’s largest confederation of smaller tribes. But officials have claimed that gunmen belong-
ing to the opposition were plotting to take control of a nearby army base and the Sanaa airport. Dozens were allegedly killed in clashes that erupted in late July between armed tribesmen and the army at the nearby Samaa camp, which the defence ministry claimed gunmen wanted to control in order to seize the international airport. Deputy information minister Abdo al-Janadi accused Mansur al-Hanaq, a former member of the influential opposition Islamist Al-Islah (Reform) party, of being behind the attack. A military official said “these armed criminal elements aimed to control the Samaa camp in an attempt to take over Sanaa International airport as part of their plan to overthrow the constitutional legitimacy and seize power by force,” according to defence ministry website 26sep.net. The Republican Guard has been fighting tribes in various regions of Yemen as several of the heavily armed tribesmen sided with protesters demanding the ousting of Saleh since January. Saleh, in power since 1978, has come under intense pressure from street protesters demanding his resignation and has remained in Saudi Arabia for nearly two months after his palace was attacked. Rare quake rattles eastern US, sparks evacuations
The strongest earthquake to strike the eastern United States in more than a century rattled downtown Washington on Tuesday and sparked fearful evacuations from skyscrapers in New York. The eastern seaboard rarely experiences earthquakes and many workers were bewildered -- and feared the worst -- as their desks swayed violently and their ceilings and walls vibrated with ominous intensity. In a bizarre legal twist, the quake prompted the early closure of courthouse offices, meaning former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn had to wait until Wednesday to collect his passport and leave the country after sexual assault charges against him were dropped. Fatima Richardson, 28, who was sitting on the steps of New York’s state courthouse on her lunch break, told AFP: “You could see the building moving. I was just freaking out.” The 5.8-magnitude quake, which lasted 20-30 seconds and whose epicenter was 3.7 miles (six kilometers) under the small and aptly-named Virginian town of Mineral, was felt as far away as Boston and even in parts of Canada. The Pentagon, the US Capitol and the historic monuments of the capital were all evacuated and airports suffered delays, but the damage was restricted to only a handful of buildings and there were no reports of casualties. President Barack Obama was not at the White House and did not feel the quake
as he was playing golf some 500 miles (800 kilometers) away in tranquil Martha’s Vineyard off the coast of Massachusetts. But people as far away as Ottawa, Canada to the north and Atlanta, Georgia to the south did report feeling the temblor, as did residents in the midwestern US states of Indiana and Michigan. Scientists said the harder, more brittle quality of the ground explained why rare tremors on the east coast are often felt over an area many times bigger than those of a similar magnitude on the more quake-prone west coast. The temblor also hit as emergency officials warned that Hurricane Irene, which was roaring through the Atlantic, may strike the eastern US seaboard this weekend. Briefed by his aides, Obama was told “there are no initial reports of major infrastructure damage, including at airports and nuclear facilities,” said deputy White House spokesman Josh Earnest. In Washington, the National Cathedral lost part of its towering neogothic spires and suffered cracks in its flying buttresses after the quake struck at 1751 GMT. Traffic in and around the capital was gridlocked and rail services were slowed, but DC fire and emergency spokesman Pete Piringer said there were no reports of serious damage or injuries. Near the epicenter in Virginia, the 1,800 megawatt North Anna nuclear power station declared an alert after losing electricity from the grid but its safety systems kicked it and it was now operating normally, officials said. The US Geological Survey said the epicenter was 38 miles (61 kilometers) from Richmond, Virginia, and 84 miles (135 kilometers) from Washington. It was the largest quake in Virginia since May 1897, when a 5.9 quake struck near the state’s western edge. The Pentagon, the world’s biggest office building located across the River Potomac from the capital, ordered a brief evacuation, which was carried out calmly. Several hundred people streamed out of the building and officials said there was no damage other than a ruptured water line. Source: AFP
Israel rejects challenge to West Bank barrier path The Israeli Supreme Court has rejected a Palestinian village’s appeal to reroute a section of Israel’s West Bank separation barrier straddling the Jerusalem municipal border, saying the petitioners didn’t prove the barrier would smother the village. Residents of Walajeh village had claimed the path of the section under construction would cut them off from their farmlands, cemetery and water source. Israel says the barrier, which at multiple points dips inside the West Bank, is crucial to keep out Palestinian attackers. Walajeh, a community of 2,000 on Jerusalem’s southwest edge, is almost entirely surrounded by Jewish settlements. The planned barrier would completely encircle the village by a fence, cutting it off from most of its open land, according to an Israeli Defense Ministry map. Locals have demonstrated against the barrier’s construction for five years, in at least one instance lying down in front of bulldozers. But Chief Justice Dorit Beinish ruled Monday that the barrier saves Israeli lives because it “blocks terrorists from entering Jerusalem.” Although the court dismissed the request to completely reroute the barrier section, Israel agreed to adjust its path to keep the natural spring on the village’s side of the barrier. The cemetery and farmlands will remain on the other side, but Israel promised to construct an underground passageway so villagers could reach the cemetery without advance military coordination. It also promised to erect access points in the barrier for Walajeh’s farmers to work their lands under the army’s supervision. Villager Mazin Qumsiyeh, a leader of the anti-barrier protests, said the access points wouldn’t help because only landowners, and not farmhands, would be allowed through. “This is the kind of thing that comes from Israeli courts,” Qumsiyeh said. “They usually try to find some sort of compromise, so to speak, but the end result is that the military establishment has the final word.” Israel began constructing the barrier in 2002 at the height of Palestinian suicide bombings in Israeli cities. Since then, several Palestinian towns and villages have challenged Israel in court, arguing that the planned route of the barrier divided residents from farmlands, nearby hospitals and other institutions. Israel’s Supreme Court has sometimes ruled in the Palestinians’ favor. Palestinians allege Israel is using the network of concrete walls and electronic fence unilaterally cements a border between Israel and the West Bank, grabbing West Bank land in the process. The enclosure, once complete, is to run for 490 miles (790 kilometers) through the West Bank and east Jerusalem, territories captured by Israel yet claimed by the Palestinians for a state. It would put 9.4 percent of the West Bank, including east Jerusalem, on the Israeli side, along with 85 percent of Israel’s 500,000 settlers, according to a UN report. Source: AP
Layton : Continued from pg 1 and daughter came out to offer their thanks. “Truly an amazing sight on Parliament Hill,” Layton’s son Mike said on his Twitter account. “My sincerest thanks to all who waited and are still waiting to give their condolences.” Like the thousands who jammed NDP rallies in the final day of the federal election, Wednesday’s procession was a slice of Canadian life. In came hipsters with puffy hair and the aging hippies with puffy knees. Some closed their eyes, others muttered soft prayers and crossed themselves in front of the coffin before moving along. One woman in purple scrubs gave a jaunty salute, others blew kisses. Some wiped tears from red eyes. They shuffled over the marble tiles of the foyer in silence, paused to scribble a note or a signature in a book of condolence and left. Some who filed through were civil servants, government badges peeking out from their pockets. Every now and again, a few people would pause long enough for a white-gloved guard to urge them gently on their way. Every thirty minutes or so, there would be a brief halt as the honour guard of House of Commons security staff was relieved, with a new group of five moving in to take up the vigil. The outpouring of grief over Layton’s death has come from across the country. Jessica Campbell, from northern B.C., happened to be in Ottawa on this cloudy afternoon. As a member of the NDP, she decided she would come by to pay her respects. She carried a bouquet of orange daisies and carnations. “I will miss him very much,” she said. Source: Winnipeg Free Press

Issue 291 - Ramadan 26, 1432 / August 26, 2011
MAINTAINING MOMENTUM TILL NEXT RAMADAN Allah, the Almighty turns to the Heavens and the Earth and asks: “O My servants! If any of you want something from me, I will grant it. If anybody prays, I will answer his prayer. If anybody asks for forgiveness, I will forgive him.” It is such a precious time. We don’t know if we would live long enough to see the next Ramadan. Yet, what we know for sure is that we are almost at the end of the ongoing mandatory fasting period of this year; and getting ready for celebrating Eid-ulFitr very shortly - if God willing. However, it’s kind of a “must remember exercise” to fully appreciate the usefulness of the month of Ramadan – provided, it has been appropriately practised. Beyond doubt, the experience is pretty helpful in enhancing and improving our self-discipline. Certainly, we learned compassion, tolerance and mutual support during the sacred period. Although, in the fasting month some halal acts are forbidden only during the fasting hours, yet all Haraam (forbidden) things have to be totally avoided not only in the sacred month but also during all months of the year 24/7. Because, if you don’t, Allah Subhanahu wa Taalaa warns, “let him know that He (Allah) did not accept his fasting in Ramadan.” Meaning in utmost clarity, the sign of acceptable ibbadah (worship) throughout Ramadan is certainly the continuity of good deeds throughout the remainder of the year after the sacred month of fasting. The real focal point now should be nothing but maintaining our positive momentum of pious deeds after Ramadan is gone for another eleven months.
In short, our major obligation remains our sincere effort to keep ourselves motivated for the maintenance of good characters and attributes that we acquired during the blessed month. After one month of tough rehearsal, we are now at much ease to comfortably schedule our day starting with getting up as early as before dawn in order to offer slatul fajre (morning prayer) followed by recitation of the Holy Qur’an and then spend the whole day under the light of teachings of the Noble Qur’an as practiced by our beloved Prophet Muhammad SallAllaahu alaihi wasallam and his companions. Indeed, we are in a much better shape to keep connected to the Almighty Allah Subhanahu wa Taalaa. Disappointingly, there is a majority of Muslims who turned Ramadan from a time to draw closer to God through fasting and contemplation to a superficial ritual hardly resembling the spirit of the month. Nevertheless, there are some health issues too as some ailments are aggravated by fasting in which case the patient is exempted from fasting. Furthermore, the unaware Muslims turn the holy month of fasting into a month of over-eating. Just take a look at the way they buy food and the amount they consume during Ramadan. Resultantly, the real essence of fasting is diminished or completely lost in some instances. As excess of everything is bad, this type of Muslims face health problems including

Vancouver Rioters By:Mehboob Hajee Vancouver Perhaps one of the reasons why the rioters have not yet been charged is because of lack of prison space. Our jails are crowded. This is the time to think OUTSIDE the box, indeed OUTSIDE of BC. This is what I suggest: Identify the rioters, vandals, looters through whatever means possible. Instead of sending them to prison or giving them light sentences, these youths should be drafted into the army and sent overseas for “peacekeeping” missions for a minimum period of 10 years. Since they are criminals by definition, they should revive only 50% salary for the first five years; if they survive that, the next three years their salary

diabetes and cardiovascular illnesses due to over-indulgence. In fact, from medical point of view- there are a lot of health benefits including the elimination of harmful fatty substances from the blood stream, helping the cure of certain types of intestinal and stomach ailments and the reconditioning of body tissues. Definitely, voluntary abstinence of lawful appetites leads one to appreciate the bounties of Allah Subhaanahu wa taala which are usually taken for granted. Having realised Allah’s pleasure there are many other clearly noticeable goodies: It enhances the feelings of inner peace, contentment and optimism, patience, perseverance and moral accomplishment. As Muslims go through a different and exciting experience for the whole month every year, it naturally breaks the normal routine of life. This is so refreshing, because it teaches the person how to adapt to varying circumstances in his life. It’s so fascinating experience as fasting promotes the spirit of unity and belonging within the Muslim Ummah. It’s so beautiful as millions of Muslims around the world fast during the same month; and following the same rules and observances. Genuinely, fasting does promote the spirit of human equality before Allah Subhanhu wa taalaa. Muslim males and females, rich and poor from all ethnic backgrounds go through the same experience of deprivation with no special privileges for any group or class.

should be at 75%; and the final two years at full salary. The advantages of my proposal are as follows: Firstly, it gets rid of hoodlums from society for a period of time. Secondly, they will be disciplined in the army, as they have to follow strict regimen. Thirdly, by seeing how the other half lives, they will learn to appreciate what they have at home when (and if) they return Fourthly, they can vent their frustrations at the enemy, instead of at their fellow citizens Fifthly, they will learn valuable skills that can become useful when they return (e.g. CPR, Driving, cooking, etc.) Sixthly, since they are returning veterans, they would be entitled to the benefits that veterans enjoy. But most importantly, this would be a major deterrent to any future would-be rioter vandal or hoodlum, as, when they are caught, they would be away from their homes and loved ones for a period of time and would be forced to serve under harsh conditions. Anything else simply does not make sense.
Condemn these acts of Terrorism By: Tanvir Chaudhry Director Media PCCA The following news was published in the Dawn Karachi news paper. {LANDI KOTAL: At least 47 tribesmen were killed and 70 others injured when a teenage suicide bomber blew himself up in a mosque during Friday prayers in Jamrud tehsil of Khyber Agency. Nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack, but Khyber Agency’s political agent Mutahir Zeb told Dawn that it might be the result of an ongoing fighting between the Taliban and Kukikhel tribesmen in Tirah valley.“This is my assessment,”

Fasting promotes the spirit of charity and sympathy towards the poor and needy. A rich person may not realise the suffering of the poor or even think about hunger until actually experiencing them. That is why Ramadan is also known as the month of charity and generosity. Fasting promotes Islamic socializing. Muslims are urged to invite others to eat iftar meal with them at sunset and to gather for Qur’anic study, prayer and visits. This surely provides a better opportunity for socialization in a brotherly and spiritual fashion. Our Prophet ((Sallal Laahu Ta’ala wa alaihi wasallam) indicated on more than one occasion that inviting a fasting person to break his fast after sunset is an act which is highly rewarded by Allah, the Almighty. Additionally, self-discipline exercised in Ramadan provides an excellent way to get rid of all bad habits. In nutshell, fasting provides an annual golden opportunity of physical overhaul of the body and spirtual healing of the mind and soul. Most importantly, it must be remembered that the main essence behind fasting remains the obedience of the Almighty Allah SWT and seeking only His pleasure.
Waan laysa lil insani illa ma’ sa’aa That man can have nothing but what he strives for.
O P I N I O N S Mr Zeb said. He recalled that Kukikhels had killed and captured some men of the Tariq Afridi group of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan in Tirah some time back. “The attack could be retaliation for that,” he said. The mosque is situated in an area inhabited by Kukikhel tribesmen.} This is not an isolated incident, for last few years we read and watch this going on in Pakistan. We (Board of directors and members of PCCA) strongly condemn these acts of terrorism and violence. No Muslim can even think rather doing such barbaric act. Whoever did it in the holy month of Ramadan cannot be a Muslim.
America India Relations By: Aftab Alam, Vancouver There is well known idiom that nations don’t have friends only interests. America’s Democratic Party decided soon after India’s independence that America’s interests will be better served by having a foothold in India. Jawahar Lal Nehru who himself came from a very rich family but believed in socialism. He did not want to have anything to do with Capitalism which was opposite of socialism. He prepared India by adopting two fundamental policies. One was to join Russia for all its defense needs. Russia on its part was prepared and did establish in India most modern factories of the time in electrical engineering, civil and mechanical engineering as well as avionics. On political side he made Non Aligned group with the help of Chu En Lai of China, Tito of Yugoslavia, Sukarno of Indonesia, Naser of Egypt and India itself. This was a direct slap on America’s face. America a Super power and a seasoned political force decided to be patient and wait for the right time. When Late John F Kennedy became President in 1961 he chose John Kenneth Galbraith as
Ambassador to India. Mr. Galbraith had PhD in economics and was teaching in Harvard University. He answered President’s call and went to New Delhi. Fifty years have passed since that inauguration and many changes have taken place in the world. Soviet Russia is no more as we knew it then. People’s Republic of China which was not even recognized by most of the world is now a major player in the world. Hong Kong was a colony of the British and now has reverted to motherland China. In light of the above changes Hillary Clinton’s visit to India is quite significant. It is also important because it took place soon after Bombay Blasts in which 24 people were killed. There is obviously no justification for this. My very sincere and heart felt condolences to the families of those who last their lives. Here I would like to share with the readers that in Karachi this year alone more than 1400 people have been targeted and killed. This is intolerable and there is good possibility that external powers are also involved in terrorism. Pakistan has real problem in Karachi, Baluchistan, PK,Punjab and so many other parts of Pakistan. To resolve this issue International Community will have to look into state terrorism. Reverting back to Hillary Clinton’s trip. She went there with specific agenda. On top was to sell eleven billion dollars worth of planes which India plans to buy for its navy and air force. India rejected that offer outright by saying that American planes did not meet their requirements. Second was terrorism. Here Hillary had some success. She knew Pakistan’s economy was in shambles and it needed American dollars badly to run its affairs. In light of these circumstances she went a step further and asked India to be the boss of Southwest Asia. In my opinion Pakistan should take notice but not loose its

Lail-atul-Qadr Its excellence is great, since in this night the Noble Qur’aan was sent down, which leads one who clings to it, to the path of honour and nobility, and raises him to the summit of distinction and everlasting life. The Muslims who adhere strictly to the Sunnah of Allaah’s Messenger SAW they vie in standing during it (Lailatul-Qadr) in Prayer out of sincere faith and hoping for reward. Here, O Muslim, are the Qur’aanic Aayaat and authentic prophetic ahaadeeth referring to this night: As regards its excellence it is more than sufficient to mention that Lailatul-Qadr is better than a thousand months, He, the Mighty and Majestic, says: “ Verily! We have sent it (this Qur’aan) down in the Night of Decree (LailatulQadr). And what will make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. Therein descend the angels and the Rooh (i.e. Gabriel) by Allaah’s Permission with all Decrees, Peace! until the appearance of dawn.” (Al-Qadr 97: 1-5) And in it every decreed matter for the year is conveyed, He, the Most High says: “ We sent it (this Qur’aan) down on a blessed Night. Verily, We are ever warning (mankind of Our Torment). Therein (that Night) is decreed every matter of ordainment. Amran (i.e. a command or this Qur’aan or His Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messenger). (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.” (Ad-Dukhaan 44: 3-6)
It is reported from the Prophet SAW that it is within the twenty-first, twenty-third, twenty-fifth, twenty-seventh, twenty-ninth or the last night of Ramadhan. The most correct saying is that it occurs in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadhan and this is shown by the hadeeth of ‘Aa’ishah, RA, who said: “Allaah Messenger SAW used to practice I’tikaaf in the last ten nights and say: ‘Seek out LailatulQadr in the (odd nights) of the last ten days of Ramadhan.” (Bukhari, Muslim ) However if the servant is too weak or unable, then he should at least not let the last seven days pass him by, due to what is reported from ‘Ibn ‘Umar, who said: Allaah’s Messenger SAW said: “Seek it in the last ten, and if one of you is too weak or unable then let him not allow that to make him miss the final seven.” (Bukhari, Muslim) This explains his, SAW saying: “I see that your dreams are in agreement (that it is in the last seven) so he who wishes to seek it out then let him seek it in the last seven.” (Bukhari) It is also known from the Sunnah, that knowledge of the exact night upon which Lailatul-Qadr falls was taken up because the people argued, ‘Ubaadah ibn as-Saamit, RA said: The Prophet SAW came out intending to tell us about Lailatul-Qadr, however two men were arguing and he said: “I came out to inform you about Lailatul-Qadr but so and so, and, so and so were arguing, so it was raised up, and perhaps that is better for you, so seek it on the (twenty) ninth and (twenty) seventh and the (twenty)
Zakat al Fitr Zakat al Fitr is an obligatory charity on every Muslim at the end of the month of Ramadan. Ibn `Umar said: “The Prophet, sallaallahu `alayhe wa sallam, enjoined the payment of one Sa’a of dates or one Sa’a of barley as Zakat al-Fitr on every Muslim, young and old, male and female, free and slave.” (Related by al-Bukhari and Muslim) The purpose of Zakat al-Fitr is to purify the one who has fasted from any type of indecent act or speech he might have committed while fasting. It also helps the poor and the needy. Ibn Abbas said: “The Messanger of Allah, sallaallahu `alayhe wa sallam, enjoined Zakat al-Fitr on the one who fasts to shield him from any indecent act or speech and for the purpose of providing food for the needy.” (Related by Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah.) The Amount of Zakat al-Fitr As the first hadeeth indicated, the amout of Zakat al-Fitr is one Sa’a. Sa’a is a volume measure correspoding approximately to the volume of 5 lb of good wheat. The material of the Zakat can be either dates, barley, wheat, rice, corn or similar items considered as basic foods. Abu Saeed said: “We used to give for Zakat al-Fitr on behalf of every child, aged person, free man or slave
during the lifetime of the Messanger of Allah, sallaallahu `alayhe wa sallam, one Sa’a of food, or one Sa’a of dried yogurt, or one Sa’a of barley, or one Sa’a of dates, or one Sa’a of raisins.” (Related by alBukhari and Muslim.) The Time for Zakat al-Fitr Zakat al-Fitr has to be paid by the end of Ramadhan. There are two times to pay Zakat al-Fitr. Either one or two days before Eid as ‘Umar used to do, or the day of Eid before the Eid prayer. Ibn `Umar reported that the Prophet, sallaallahu `alayhe wa sallam, ordered them to pay Zakat al-Fitr before they go out to perform the Eid prayer. If Zakat al-Fitr is paid after the Eid prayer, it will only be considered as regular charity. The Prophet, sallaallahu `alayhe wa sallam, said: “If one pays Zakat al-Fitr before the Salat, it is considered an accepted Zakat, if he pays it after the Salat, it is considered an ordinary charity.” (Related by Abu Dawud.) Zakat al-Fitr is to be given to the same eight categories or people as in the other types of Zakat. Some scholars say that the poor and the nedy are the most deserving ones since the Prophet, sallaallahu `alayhe wa sallam, said that it had “...the purpose of providing food for the needy.”

fifth.” (Bukhari) Some ahaadeeth indicate that Lailatul-Qadr is in the last ten nights, while others indicate that it is in the odd nights of the last ten, so the first are general and the second more particular, and the particular has to be given priority over the general. Other ahaadeeth state that it is in the last seven and these are restricted by mention of one who is too weak or unable. So there is no confusion, all the ahaadeeth agree and are not contradictory. In conclusion: The Muslim should seek out Lailatul-Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten: the night of the twenty-first (the night before the twenty-first day), the twentythird, the twenty-fifth, the twenty-seventh and the twenty-ninth. He SAW said: “Whoever stands in (Prayer) in Lailatul-Qadr out of Eemaan and seeking reward then his previous sins are forgiven.” (Bukhari) It is recommended to supplicate a great deal in it, it is reported from ‘Aa’ishah, RA that she said: “O Messenger of Allaah! What if I knew which night Lailatul-Qadr was, then what should I say in it?” He said: “Say: Allaahumma innaka ‘affuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘annee.” (O Allaah you are the one who pardons greatly, and loves to pardon, so pardon me.) (at-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah) From ‘Aa’ishah, RA who said: “The Prophet SAW used to tighten his waist-wrapper (izaar) - (meaning detached himself from his wives in order to worship, and exerted himself in seeking Lailatul-Qadr), spend the night in worship, and wake the family in the last ten nights.” (Bukhari, Muslim)
Volume 3, Book 31, Number 118: Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “Fasting is a shield (or a screen or a shelter). So, the person observing fasting should avoid sexual relation with his wife and should not behave foolishly and impudently, and if somebody fights with him or abuses him, he should tell him twice, ‘I am fasting.” The Prophet added, “By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, the smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. (Allah says about the fasting person), ‘He has left his food, drink and desires for My sake. The fast is for Me. So I will reward (the fasting person) for it and the reward of good deeds is multiplied ten times.”
From ‘Aa’ishah, RA: “Allaah’s Messenger SAW used to exert himself in the last ten nights more than he would at other times.” (Muslim) From Abu Hurairah, RA who said: “We were discussing Lailatul-Qadr in the presence of Allaah’s Messenger SAW, so he said: ‘Which of you remembers (the night) when the moon arose and was like half a plate?’” (Muslim) [Qaadi ‘Iyaad said: “It contains an indication that it was towards the end of the month - since the moon does not appear like that when it arises except towards the end of the month.”] Let us seek abundance rewards from our Creator by performing extra actions in these last few days of the noble month of Ramadhan as it could be our last...

Issue 291 - Ramadan 26, 1432 / August 26, 2011
Message from the Pakistani Consul General on the Occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr On behalf of all my colleagues at the Consulate General, I extend my sincere greetings to all our Pakistani brothers, sisters and their families living in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. The day of Eid-ul-Fitr has a special meaning for the Muslims. Celebrated to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan, it brings together families and friends for joyous festivities and gives them the opportunity for bonding and caring for each other. It is also a day of sharing and giving and remembering those who are no longer with us. It is also a day of thanking our Creator for His limitless bounties and comforts. It is a day of showing our generosity and extending our hands to those who are poor and needy. Peace and harmony are the cornerstones of Islamic faith. Eid-ul-Fitr is an occasion which unites the entire Muslim world in celebration and calls for social harmony and cohesion. It strengthens our humanitarian obligations to promote peaceful and harmonious relations with all our fellow human beings. On this auspicious occasion, we pray for the health and happiness of all members of the Pakistani community and for the progress and prosperity of Pakistan.
Shuja Alam
Ameen
Eid Message from the President of the BC Muslim Association Br. Sikandar Khan In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise and thanks be to Allah Almighty, the Originator and Creator of the heavens and the earth and our esteemed salutations to the beloved Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h). Allahu Akbar , Allahu Akbar , La Ilaha Illa Allah , Allahu Akbar , Allahu Akbar , Wa Li-ILLahi Al- Hamd ! With the huming of this taqbeer, I extend a very warm and joyous eid greetings to all the citizens of Canada in general and to all Muslims in particular. Eid Mubarak! “O mankind! We created you from a single soul, male and female, and made you into nations and tribes, so that you may come to know one another. Truly, the most honored of you in God’s sight is the greatest of you in piety. God is all- knowing, All – Aware. “(49:13). Once again, yet another Ramadan is passing us by and we are, once again, bidding
farewell to the month of the Qur’an, to the month of fasting, prayer and charity. This sacred month gave us the opportunity to meet the requirements of enhanced piety and to focus on reformation of our character and behavior as a person. If we prayed with sincerity, and strove against our inner desires, then we must thank and praise Allah, asking Him to grant us continued steadfastness and commitment for the rest of our lives. Allah Ta’ala says in the Qur’an “Be not like one who sewed a shirt then destroyed it.” (Surah An- Nahl, 16:92). Almost 1.6 billion Muslims around the world, about 1 million in Canada and over 150,000 in British Columbia will celebrate the grand occasion of Eid Ul Fitr, a festival of rejoicing and happiness. The air of festivity and celebration around the world can be felt and seen on the eve before Eid when frenzied shopping and Eid preparations are at its heights all around the world. Alhamdulillah, Eid is celebrated by everyone, adults, and children, poor and wealthy alike. The Holy Prophet SAS ordered the wealthy and privileged to pay the poor and needy the prescribed amount known as Fitrana so they (poor and needy) may be able to enjoy the grandeur of the occasion. This institution of fitrana reinforces Islam’s emphasis on ones obligation towards society. Let me while on Eid share very important
information with you. For decades, we did not agree on a common solution on Hilal sighting. Alhamdulillah, this year, we began Ramadan in unity and Insha Allah, we shall celebrate Eid together in unity here in British Columbia. While we, Alhamdulillah, are blessed and privileged in Canada our fellow Muslims in Eastern Africa are going through a major catastrophe in the form of famine. The BCMA and various other groups are organizing major fund raising activities to help our fellow Muslims in Somalia and I urge you to fully participate in this exercise. The Palestinian leadership will submit an application to the United Nations to become its newest member. We urge you to write or send an email to the Prime Minister of Canada and strongly voice your opinion and ask Prime Minister Stephen Harper to vote yes to Palestine State. The B.C. Muslim Association in its endeavor to pursue its vision in the field of education have shown absolute commitment to excellence and dedication in achieving its objectives in this field. To address the overcrowding problems and lack of space in Surrey Muslim School, the Association is indulged in serious negotiation to purchase a building in Surrey at another location as a solution to overcrowding at our current location. We seek for your absolute support
and commitment for this noble initiative. In Prince George, Insha Allah, if all goes well, we shall this year pray our First Eid Salah in the newly built new Mosque and Islamic Centre. A historic achievement and phase in the life of BCMA, Alhamdulillah. We thank you for your generosity and contribution in realizing this dream come true. May Allah Almighty reward everyone for their support in the past and their continued support in the future, Insha Allah? Our Brothers and sisters in Victoria are also very active in their fund raising drive for their new Mosque. Thanks to Allah SWT, the BCMA have made tremendous progress and reached new heights in the last five years. In conclusion, let me make this Du’aa for all of us “Oh Allah, be pleased with us … but if you are not pleased with us, then grant us your forgiveness. “ Ameen. Let us celebrate this most auspicious festival with great spiritual devotion. Let our participation in the Eid prayer become a climax of this grand festival as a demonstration of supreme manifestation of the Muslim Ummah and equality of mankind. On behalf of our sisters, Executive Council, Branch and Chapter Officials and members I extend a very warm and joyous Eid celebrations to you all. Eid Mubarak!

Be it shopping for new clothes or buying groceries for the big Eid feast, Eid brings with itself a busy and enjoyable schedule for everyone. As we celebrate this occasion, we should remember those who have lost their loved ones in various natural and human disasters throughout the world. Please continue to help the poor and orphans for Somalia Drought Victims with your generous donations. At this time, I would also like to thank supporters and well wishers of The Miracle for providing continuous support through advertisements of their businesses, sharing their thoughts in writing with our readers, especially our regular and occasional contributors. After receiving positive feedback and encouragement from both within and outside of Canada, The Miracle team feels proud to launch another special 56 pages edition on the occasion of Eid, following its Independence Day edition.
As always, feel free to comment on this issue as your concerns and suggestions are highly appreciated for improving our quality in future. Letter : Continued from pg 7 sleep over it. Other main news of the past week and a half was Pakistan’s first female foreign minister Hina Rabbani’s official visit to India. She took Indian Media by a storm. Her picture was on front page of almost every major newspaper. She was on tv and Indian journalists were clamoring to cover her every move. They were talking about her clothes, about the necklace around her neck, about her high heeled shoes, her high priced glasses as well as beautiful watch. They even
talked about the classy genes and showed a picture of her playing as mother to her baby daughter. India’s foreign minister S.M.Krishna termed her visit as success and looked forward to work with her in the future. As we know she comes from a very influential family of South Punjab. Her uncle Ghulam Mustafa Khar had held many important posts at federal and provincial level. In other words she lived all her life around politics. She has reached this far at very young age. I wish her success in new portfolio.

Jack Layton 1950 - 2011
“My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.” - Jack Layton Life History: John Gilbert “Jack” Layton, PC, MP (July 18, 1950 – August 22, 2011) was a Canadian social democratic politician and the Leader of the Opposition, who was the leader of the New Democratic Party from 2003 to 2011. Jack Layton was born in Montreal and raised in nearby Hudson, Quebec, a comfortable and largely anglophone community. His parents were Doris Elizabeth (née Steeves) and Progressive Conservative MP Robert Layton. He was elected student council president of his
high school, Hudson High School, and his yearbook predicted that he would become a politician. He studied political science at McGill University, where he became a Brother of the Sigma Chi fraternity. In 1970, the family moved to Toronto where Layton went to York University to obtain his Ph.D. in political science. Layton then became a professor at Ryerson University. He also became a prominent activist for a variety of causes. He has written several books, including Homelessness: The Mak-
Miracle Media Group We had lots of opportunities in the past to meet with Hon. Jack Lyton one-on-one and and asked him many question. We always found him to be a person with great enthusiasm, courage, passion and a unique leadership quality. He did a remarkable job this election during his illness. The Miracle media group pays its heartfelt condolences the family and NDP for this great loss.
JINNY SIMS MP It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of our friend, mentor and hero: Jack Layton. I want to thank all of you who have taken the time to write, call and drop by my office to offer your condolences. It has meant a lot to me. I first met Jack eight years ago while I was still a representative for British Columbia’s teachers. What amazed me from the time of that first meeting, until now, was his ability to connect with ordinary people. Polls often confirmed that Jack was the politician that Canadians felt most comfortable hanging out with or taking care of their children. There could not be a more fitting tribute for a man who was so clearly of the people. Throughout the years, I got to know Jack and his family well. And we spoke frequently about the possibility of my running for office and joining his team in Ottawa. I always told him that I wasn’t sure it was the right time. But as everyone who knows Jack will tell you, he was nothing if not determined! I was so pleased to have been elected under Jack’s superb leadership. I only regret that I could not have served with him longer. When I heard the news of Jack’s passing, my thoughts immediately turned to his partner in life, love and politics: Olivia Chow. I was fortunate to have been invited to Jack and Olivia’s house in Toronto for dinner one evening, where I first got to witness their amazing
ing and Unmaking of a Crisis and, more recently, a book on general public policy, Speaking Out. Layton comes from a long line of politicians. His great-granduncle, William Steeves, was a Father of Confederation. His great-grandfather Philip Layton was a blind activist who founded the Montreal Association for the Blind in 1908 and led a campaign for disability pensions in the 1930s. His father, Robert Layton, was a Liberal Party activist in the 1960s and 1970s, and served as a Progres-
bond. Theirs is truly a love for the ages. I’ve had very few men in my life who I would say have been role models. My father was one. And Jack was certainly another. As an immigrant to this wonderful country, it was such an inspiration to see a leader for whom multiculturalism and diversity wasn’t just a slogan. Jack saw that diversity is our strength – his Canada truly included everyone. Perhaps Jack’s greatest gift to Canadians was that of hope. Hope that change is possible. Hope that we can be a better country tomorrow than we are today. Hope that we can all overcome the odds. I can’t think of a greater gift. Jack showed us all that a better world is indeed possible. We will honour him by working harder to create the more progressive Canada of his dreams.
Sue Hammell, MLA Surrey-Green Timbers I am deeply saddened by the news of Jack Layton’s passing. Jack was an extraordinary leader and his loss feels like a loss in our own family. As we grieve, we must commit ourselves to continue to build on his legacy and the principals he fought for all his political life.
Jagrup Brar, MLA Surrey-Fleetwood I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jack Layton. As Canadians we have lost an incredible leader. At this time my thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Olivia Chow, and his children, Sarah and Miachel Layton - who have not only lost a husband and a father, but, a good friend. It was jack’s honesty and integrity that took the federal NDP to where it is today. Not only did his values and beliefs strike a chord with the average Canadian, but, it resonated strongly with the youth of today. Jack’s love & passion of politics

sive Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) and Cabinet minister in the 1980s under Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. In eight years as leader of the NDP he took his party to heady heights, but fell himself to a tragic disease at the age of 61. It was only a month ago that he found out he had another form of cancer. It was not a recurrence of the prostate cancer with which he was diagnosed in late 2009; he never revealed what it was.
is the reason why he was respected by all members of parliament, regardless of which party they belonged to.
Ijaz Ahmed Chatha Trustee-Surrey Board of Education Jack’s passing is a great tragedy and a huge loss for Canada as a whole and in particular the NDP party. Not only was he a great politician, he was also a genuine and caring individual. It was under his inspiring leadership that the party moved forward to new heights, by becoming the official opposition. I was truly shocked beyond words when I heard of his passing, and my sincere condolences go out to the Layton family for their great loss. The NDP will carry forth his set goals under new leadership with the energy and strength that he has provided and left behind. Community Youth Discussion at Masjid Al- Salaam
On August 14, Masjid Al-Salaam and Education Centre Burnaby organized a youth discussion at BCMA Burnaby Masjid. The Event coordinator, Mr. Imad, invited Sheikh Maulana Shoaib Ismail of Leicester, UK who gave a brief introduction for this discussion. After the recitation of Holy Quran, this young scholar delivered a beautiful lecture on all aspects of daily life in our Youth. He quoted many verses of Quran along with Hadiths, Tafaseer and Fiqh books about the challenges in the daily life of young generation. In his presentation he touched on topics in many chapters like the respect of parents in Quran, “And your Lord has ordained that you do not worship anyone except Him, and treat
your parents with kindness; if either of them or both reach old age in your presence, do not say “Uff”* to them and do not rebuff them, and speak to them with the utmost respect. And lower your wing humbly for them, with mercy, and pray, “My Lord! Have mercy on them both, the way they nursed me when I was young.” (17:23-24). He also gave the examples of prophets Hzt.Yousaf and Yahiya (AS)and also talked about the respect showed by Hzt. Essa (AS) to his mother. He asked everyone that based on these words of Quran, what is the level of respect of our parents? Other important topics chosen by Sheikh Ismail were Alcohol, Adultery, Pontification, intoxication and Hijab etc. For details, he recited many verses of Quran including
the following: “O you Children of Adam! We have bestowed on you raiment to cover your shame as well as to be an adornment to you. But the raiment of righteousness, that is the best. Such are among the Signs of Allah, that they may receive admonition.” (Quran 7:26) “O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks close round them (when they go abroad). That will be better, so that they may be recognised and not annoyed. Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.” (Quran 33:59) The Qur’an says, “ And come not near to unlawful sexual intercourse (Zina). Verily, it is a faahishah (anything that transgresses
its limits-a great sin) and an evil way (that leads one to Hell unless Allah forgives him). Surah, al-Isra’, 17: 32. He also explained the importance of the heart, brain, tongue, eyes and all other body parts and specially the relationship of heart and Iman. He mentioned how many young Muslims are using these body parts in a negative way and we have to correct ourselves. Overall, this was an impressive event which imparted Islamic teachings to our youth in an effective way and the credit of this effort goes to the Burnaby Masjid youth chapter who organized the event. Such lectures are required in most of the places at different times.
Prof. Soharwardhy Visits Vancouver in Ramadan The BC chapter of Islamic Supreme Council of Canada organizes a Darse e Quran session monthly in which Professor Syed Badiuddin Soharwardy comes from Calgary to explain verses from the Surahs of holy Quran in details. On August 13, Prof. Soharwardhy’s lecture was on Sura Yunus. Amongst the many verses, he recited the following verse of Surah Younus, “Then has there not been a [single] city that believed so its faith benefited it except the people of Jonah? When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace
in worldly life and gave them enjoyment for a time.”(10:98) He explained the Surah in detail in the light of Quran and Sunnah. He also gave a brief lecture on the month of Ramadan and the good deeds that should be especially done in this month. Mr. Haider Khan was the co-coordinator of this monthly Dars e Quran. Mr. Shams Jilani was specially invited at the stage as a guest. In his short speech, he spoke of the benefits of fasting and how we should
continue this Taqwa, Ikhlas with our actions in our daily life after Ramadan is over. The Dars ended before Iftar after which Prof
Soharwardhy and Mr. Jilani recited Naat e Rasool Maqbool (SWA).

Ramadan Spirit Continues Tradition of Sharing Meals with Homeless of Vancouver
Pakistan-Canada Association, under the leadership of Vice President and long-time Trustee of Al-Jamia Masjid Vancouver Haroon Khan, held its Fifth Annual Ramadan Spirit Feed the Homeless Campaign on August 17th, 2011. Fresh hot meals were served on the corner of Main and Hastings in front of the historic Carnegie Library with meals provided by Lahore Halal Meats, Gulberg Restaurant and Zako’s Deli respectively. An army of volunteers made packages of food and sent them off assembly line style to the front of a seemingly endless line of needy Vancouverites looking for a warm meal and some sustenance to get them through their day. Special thank to Consul General Shuja Alam and Business Counsel Zaid Bin Maqsood for helping with food distribution and Mr. Imtiaz Popat for his hard work and dedication each year for Ramadan Spirit. Prior to the event a press conference was held at Al Jamia Masjid Vancouver, the historic first mosque in Western Canada, with special guest His Worship Mayor Gregor Robertson of Vancouver. Vice President Haroon Khan coordinated the proceedings with speeches from Consul General Shuja Alam and Mayor Gregor Robertson. A question and answer session followed with Mayor Robertson fielding questions about his work to end homelessness in Vancouver and the next steps needed from the city and community. Both criticism and praise were served during this session with the Mayor happy to see the passion for the issue of homelessness from the over 40 community members in
attendance. City counselor Geoff Meggs was also present and heavily involved in the overall organization of this event. It should be noted that Mayor Robertson was on vacation with his family and left them temporarily to attend the Ramadan Spirit press conference before traveling back to be with them later that day. A significant portion of the program was dedicated to raising awareness of famine stricken Somalia. All in all a highly successful event as the goal of providing meals to the needy during this blessed month of Ramadan was met thanks to the countless volunteers and generous food donors. Much needs to be done to combat the issue of homelessness in the lower mainland. As a community we have much to be thankful for and much to give back to our fellow human beings. Whether it be in Vancouver, Somalia or elsewhere the positive impact we can have on our fellow human beings is enormous and must be recognized and acted upon, especially during this time of reflection and renewal in Ramadan. Political Opportunism and Karachi Massacre
By Tariq Mian Recent target assassinations in Karachi coupled with indiscriminate killing spree have victimised some political workers along with street public in general for no fault of theirs except they were at the wrong place at the wrong time. Just in one week, loss of more than 100 people in the city is highly thought provoking. Seemingly, the local political craziness of such a magnitude has pushed Karachi into an economic turmoil causing an irreparable loss to the whole nation. Unfortunately, the ongoing “tug o war” in Karachi is for the sake of dominance – which presents a scene even worse than that of a jungle where the ferocious animals target other ferocious ones or go on a killing spree for spreading a scare in order to establish their own authoritarian rule throughout the domain in question. Nevertheless, every step of dishonest leadership is based on the political opportunism which has created a great deal of messy scenario in the entire country and particularly in Karachi, the commercial hub of Pakistan. Most obviously, the aim of the political gangsters is to establish their very own areas of influence. It’s not hard to smell the immoral and unlawful motives of the stakeholders who are desperate for the control of this mega city. Yet sadly, the impotent authorities are severely disabled and are suffering from administrative paralysis. The current spell of unrest is blamed on gangs with links to three rival political parties looking for influence namely the ruling
PPP, the MQM, and the Awami National Party. The struggle for power has activated the “dangerous underworld” to carry out their killing missions in the streets of Karachi openly with complete confidence and brazenness. It’s believed that street thugs and ethnic gangs have been used by political parties as foot soldiers in a turf war in the city. However, the political parties in question deny any involvement. Furthermore, any conciliation followed by reconciliatory politics is aimed at power sharing. It is generally inferred that the politics of reconciliation is a tricky game full of blatant lies, double-dealing, using party members to issue rhetorical statements, backstabbing coalition partners and ignoring commitments and the solemn statements. Quite apparently, the Sindh government headed by an aging chief minister either lacks integrity or competence in matters of handling any situation – despite the criminal gangs armed to the teeth with modern weaponry are roaming around killing for showing off basically. However, greed, treachery and double standards have been overriding the agreements of conciliations and reconciliations. Shamefully, such is the attitude chiefly responsible for the current fatal scenario on the streets. On top of that, land mafia, bhatta mafia and other criminals are busy extorting money, taking over properties, kidnapping for ransom, doing drugs in a fearless manner as if no law applies to them. Despite the federal interior minister’s assurance to arrest the killers, none is produced before the courts so far. The reason is simple: these criminals enjoy the patronage of Karachi’s power players. The real issue under discussion is the share
of bounty from Karachi. (Pathetic) The PM obviously has a very loose handle on the situation. A day before the meeting he headed in Karachi, he had resisted all the calls coming in from more and more groups that the army be deployed in the city. Yet, the senior ulema, at a press conference last Sunday, joined the MQM, the ANP and the business community in demanding army action. Under such a grave situation, a stronger line of action from the federal government is urgently needed, yet a viable strategy at the highest levels to deal with the critical situation is not coming fast enough as only 14 accused including 10 target killers and four extortionists have been apprehended so far from different parts of Karachi. However, federal interior minister Rehman Malik has promised an indiscriminate action against the miscreants and terrorists across the board in light of the directives of Prime Minister, Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani. More worrisome is the leaked information suggesting that the gangs shall be informed prior to the crackdown against the criminals/killers so that they may hide/move the arms/guns/hand grenades/rockets to the safer places. Horrendously, the inhuman activity has been affecting the innocent Karachites of course. Main victims of this bloodbath are no other than people who come from all cultural and linguistic backgrounds e.g. Urdu speaking community of migrants, Sindhis, Baloch and Pakhtoon or Pathans or Punjabis. But the security forces other than the army currently operating in Karachi have miserably failed to bring the situation under control. Even the police are admitting that they have no alternate choice but to follow orders asking them not to intervene to stop the violence. The civil society has also been too naive
so far to mobilize to insist to correct the power struggle. Ballot not bullet is the only answer: But his Excellency Mr President is busy point scoring to strengthen his presidency through coalition politics in Pakistan. On the other hand, Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry took a suo motu notice of Karachi’s deteriorating security situation last Monday ordering the government to submit a record regarding the ongoing unrest in the metropolis. As Pakistan armed forces do not have the power to correct the ailing atmosphere in Karachi, Gen Kayani expressed “grave concern” over the security situation in Pakistan’s biggest city and said the army was “ready, if the government called on it, to control the situation in Karachi.” Guess what? Pir sahib Pagara has also indicated that the time of martial law has arrived and warned that September will be a bad month for the government. Oh, there you go! Since, Karachi is the jugular vein of country’s economy and it will be great injustice if the deteriorating law and order situation is further allowed to continue for a longer period, it’s about time for the Pakistani nation to wake up and realize the precious time is fast running out. Therefore, collectively, we all have to work hard to do political cleansing and get back to the road of economic recovery to attain self-sufficiency before it’s too late. With Karachi burning, the whole country feels the pain as almost all institutions have been so damaged beyond easy repair while corruption and nepotism are rampant. Since the present government has totally failed to correct any of the political and economic woes, a fresh electoral process based on merit is the only way to go forward in the best interests of Pakistan.

EID MENU FROM AROUND THE WORLD
The menu is as much an integral part of Eid celebrations as the ritual and customs. It’s very much an integral part of the Eid-ul-Fitar celebrations. Every Muslim family takes great care to prepare the exclusive dishes on Eid. The idea
is to make the menu over-the-top and include food which are not regularly eaten . But it must not be forgotten that before indulging in the delicacies, one needs to say his prayers before the Eid feast. It is customary to begin eating

Essence of Eid
The celebration of Eid ul-Fitr culminates a month of fasting wherein the faithful have spent their time praying and beseeching God for forgiveness and mercy. For many, Ramadan was not just an abstention from food and drink. Rather, it was an exercise in patience and discipline. Eid is the celebration for those who fasted and obeyed God’s rules and teachings. It is for those who spent the month of Ramadan in complete devotion to Allah. Eid is a time when the entire Muslim community comes together to share in each others joy and blessings and also to lessen the burden of those who may be suffering. It is preceded by people shopping and looking around for gifts for their near and dear ones. It is a time when the bright lights from homes and shops illuminates our life. We use see this day and the following days to spread happiness and social harmony by visiting our friends and relatives. Gifts are exchanged during Eid by young and old alike. We also visit the elderly and the sick. Eid is a time where all kinds or festivities prevail. Many of us gormandize to make up for “lost food” during the month of Ramadan. However, with all the going around we some time forget our lesser privileged brethren. We forget that there are many out there who have nothing to celebrate. There are those among our brothers and sisters for whom Eid day is just another ordinary day. There are those who open their cupboards on Eid day and find them bare. There are those who in hospitals who will go through a bleak and lonely day with no one visiting them. Friendless, deprived of company, they will have no one to offer solace or comfort. Let us therefore see to it that our deprived brethren welcome the day of Eid
with warmth and hope. As we buy gifts and clothes for our children, let us earmark a special sum for those who cannot afford to buy. Also we should instill in our children a sense of compassion so that when they buy something they will also think of their unfortunate brethren. Let us teach them the art of giving. We should let them know that there are millions of children in; war torn areas of Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Kashmir and Chechnya, the poor and downtrodden areas of Africa, Asia and South America, and even in the forgotten ghettos of Europe and North America who do not have the basic necessities to make this day a different day. We cannot divest ourselves from the misery of others. We cannot shrug it off saying that it does not concern us. To do this would be an injustice to humanity. The Quran (5:8) tells us ... Be just: that is next to piety. Many of us donate money to charity and fulfill our religious duty. However, if we actually meet the recipients of our charity the perception of charity changes. There is a feeling of belonging when the recipient and giver meet. Islamic ideology teaches us to be kind and compassionate. Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that “I and the provider of the orphan will be together.” And what greater prize is there for anyone of us than to be around our beloved prophet. All we need for that is compassion, sincerity and a feeling of brotherhood and understanding. And that will decide the quality of our life on earth and the hereafter. Infant Circumcision Khitan/Khatna Last year alone, hundreds of BC doctors referred more than 2000 infants for circumcision to Dr. Neil Pollock. Here is why: • Dr. Pollock’s unique method is virtually painless, virtually bloodless and done in 30 seconds • He has safely performed over 30 000 circumcisions (from newborn to six months) • He has extremely low complication rates • 2 clinics with fast and convenient access. • No hospital administrative fees.

Harry Bains, acclaimed for a third time as NDP Candidate Surrey-Newton MLA Harry Bains enjoyed his third acclamation nomination on Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, the head of the rebel council said that 400 people were killed and 2,000 wounded in three days of fighting between rebels and forces loyal to Gaddafi in the Libyan capital. Mustafa Abdel Jalil, chairman of the National Transitional Council, told France 24 television that some 600 pro-Gaddafi fighters had been captured but the battle would not be over until the Libyan leader himself was a prisoner. Fighting continued across the capital with the sound of gunfire and occasional explosions ringing out. Apart from Bab al-Azizya, the rebels also seized control of the Abu Salim neighbourhood of Tripoli late on Tuesday, a senior spokesman said, referring to one of
