Hijab-wearing woman should be allowed to testify, Harper spokesman says
Prime Minister Stephen Harper doesn’t agree with a Quebec Court judge’s controversial decision to refuse to hear a woman’s case because she was wearing a hijab, a spokesman says. “If someone is not covering their face, we believe they should be allowed to testify,” Harper spokesman Stephen Lecce said
in a one-line statement. he comment comes following a CBC News report Thursday that Judge Eliana Marengo told a woman in a Montreal courtroom she would not hear her case until she removed her hijab. Rania ElAlloul was in court Tuesday to apply to get her car back after it was seized by Quebec’s automobile insurance board, the SAAQ, because her son had been driving with a suspended licence. The incident has sparked widespread discussion across Canada and especially in Quebec, where the province has had a heated debate about secularism and the limits of reasonable accommodation. On Friday, Opposition Leader Tom Mulcair said El-Alloul should have been allowed to plead her case while wearing a headscarf. “It’s a simple matter of that person’s rights as a Canadian,” he Continued on pg 5

Vulnerable Muslim Community Deserves Respect
Beyond doubt, the ongoing climate of “hatred and fear” targeting Muslims is injurious to the good image of Canada. Anti Muslim attitude has been developing aggressively for some time followed by no corrective action from the government. Shamefully, there are those who are openly involved in Muslim bashing, while some are constantly busy working behind the scenes to manufacture maximum hatred against Canadians with Muslim names. But, the practising Muslims are the ones who are hit hard; this negative fact is bound to endanger the well established reputation of Canada. Most probably, manufacturing Islamophobia offers a profitable business to many. However, the cost seems to be too high in terms of rising discrimination and bias against the Muslims at the workplaces. The frustrated victims are already complaining about a “fishy odor” coming from the ongoing cultivation of Islamophobia. And, momentum, of course, continues to be building up. So debating over the issue of veil or head scarf is merely aimed at diverting the people’s attention. The rising anti-Muslim sentiment makes the Muslim community very vulnerable.Hostile environment continues to get poisoned 24/7 by some undeclared stakeholders and beneficiaries. In other words, the manipulative industry seems to have some motives and interests. The number of Islamophobes is on the rise, because the biased media spreads misinformation on regular basis to make the entire Muslim community look like the real culprits for every incident. However, the good Muslims in the view of the Islamophobs are the moderates, liberated and the ordinary ones who are only yespersons. Why are the Canadians and Quebe-
Systematic erosion of women’s equality By: Zahida munthazeem I am writing this in response to the star.com newspaper about how worst we as women are treated in Canada since 2004 as a report done by the United Nation . It is so sad that we are living in canada and we have a mentality of backward colonial day system that there is a huge gap in respect towards pay equality to child care this picture the conservative party will be paint to the united nation for assessment. The United Nation conference in March will laid out plan of action for Canada and neighbouring countries. Womens are not or will be on a losing side. We have to get the advocacy group involved in this and ask the government to provide the agency with funding and support. There should be some how we could get the child care program back and closing the gap between men and female. Kathy Lahey, a professor in the Queens University recognizes the need for change. She points out that since 2001 things have become worse. She also mentions that men with doctorates will get full time work as com-
cois being encouraged to have an anti-Muslim sentiment? Doesn’t it amount to fueling/fanning the anti Muslim fire? Digging deeper, one may find the purpose of anti-Muslim propaganda which seems to be maintaining a constant climate of fear. Also, a deliberate stirring up prejudice against Muslims for political advantage is well calculated. Conveniently, the created ‘Muslim-issues’ can easily be used to gain in the polls through distracting people’s attention from real economic and social issues. The fact is Muslims deserve to be treated with dignity and respect because they contribute to Canada immensely. Furthermore, majority of Muslims are law-abiding citizens who adhere to the teachings of their faith based only on peace and justice. Hence, Islam becomes the fastest growing faith in the west. Muslims are not forcing anyone to convert, because it’s the logic that attracts others towards the religion of peace. The Quran was sent for the benefit of all Humankind including the believers indeed. The Quran (2:256) says: There is no compulsion in religion.285 The Right Way stands clearly distinguished from the wrong. Hence he who rejects the evil ones286 and believes in Allah has indeed taken hold of the firm, unbreakable handle. And Allah (Whom he has held for support) is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. (2:257) Allah is the Guardian of those who believe, He brings them out of every darkness into light.287 (http://www.islamicstudies.info/ tafheem.php? The irony is the hate mongers tell Muslim Canadians to go back from where they come from without realizing that the entire country has been built by immigrants consisting of people of multi cultural/religious
back grounds. Religious and visible minorities experience racism, hatred bad mouthing and dirty comments, the same scenario currently is responsible for discomforting the Muslims who are being discriminated against on the basis of their religion. Shockingly, the alarming trend has put the Muslims specifically in terrible situation even at the work places: Although, Human rights laws protect employees from being treated unfairly because of their sex, age, race, religion, or disability, yet the “anti Muslim virus” seems to be becoming airborne at a much faster pace than it was thought. It’s about time that the Muslim workers should be aware of their legal rights by visiting Labour Program’s Equality in the Workplace Web pages. All Canadians have the right to be treated fairly in workplaces free from discrimination. Remember! Canada has laws to protect workers from discrimination on the basis of color creed or ethnicity. A further read of the Employment Equity Act will be beneficial. Also, visit the Canadian Human Rights Commission Web site. Section 15 - Equality Rights 1.Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability. 2.Subsection (1) does not preclude any law, program or activity that has as its object the amelioration of conditions of disadvantaged individuals or groups including those that are disadvantaged because of race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability. The Supreme Court of Canada has
stated that the purpose of section 15 is to protect those groups who suffer social, political and legal disadvantage in society. Discrimination occurs where, for example, a person, because of a personal characteristic, suffers disadvantages or is denied opportunities available. At the same time as it protects equality, the Charter also allows for certain laws or programs that favour disadvantaged individuals or groups. Endeavour to re-unite all communities: The aggrieved Muslim community must handle the odds with grace and dignity to rid Canada of hatred and fear. Hopefully, one day we can all live in harmony and accept one another for who we are. Repairing the wounded culture of understanding, reaching out to the marginalized members of society and working together to remove discrimination in all its forms are the keys for the common good of all. Certainly, we need to work and share together as Canadians. Media must show injustices against the rights of Muslim Canadians that are protected by the Charter. At the end of the day, Canada would continue to be place of acceptance and diversity. It’s responsibility of the State to come up with more clear legislation so that judicial discretion is minimised in legal proceedings with regard to making equal rights available to all indiscriminately. pared to female with doctorates. I feel it is about time and a reality check for the Harper government as explained by the Canadian feminist alliance. Prime minister in his defence mentioned that how he has created more jobs and womens getting educated. He himself will knows that behind he is on this issues which he has to present to the G8 and G20 this year. The problem with Harper Government is how it is closing women’s advocacy group. He feels that woman’s issue and mens issues are not to be separated and dealt together and help the front line services. There is also elimination of funding to help support equality fight in the court system. “There has been a sharp decrease in institutional and political support by the government of Canada for the promotion and protection of the human rights of women and girls and a systematic erosion of the human rights of women and girls in Canada.” The report notes Canada has been steadily declining in international rankings of gender disparity over the past few years, at the UN and at the World Economic Forum. In 2006, Canada placed 14th out of 115 countries in terms of the World Forum’s “gender-gap index” – a complex calculation that takes account of wages, education, health and political power. In 2009, Canada had slipped to 25th place. Even among 22 OECD nations, Canada is lagging in measurement of the gender gap in wages, the report notes – in fifth place, behind the United States. Lahey says that the loss of a national child-care program – put in place
by Paul Martin’s Liberal government from 2004 to 2006, dismantled when Harper came to power – has represented another backward step for women and their economic security in Canada. She says the slashing of government revenues, by political parties of all stripes, has made a real, negative impact on the status of Canadian women. She also says that there are “deep, cultural” forces operating against women’s equality – as evidenced by the fact that any progress is difficult to maintain. I hope that we could bring enclosure to this.
hijab, her case would not be heard and that the only option El-Alloul had was to ask for an adjournment so she could receive some legal advice. Although El-Alloul opposed the adjournment and conveyed to the judge that she could not afford a lawyer, the judge still adjourned the case indefinitely. Judge Marengo did not cite any security or identification concerns when she made this decision but instead conflated the hijab with sunglasses and hats, which are routinely removed by persons entering courtrooms and stated that the same rules ought to apply to all people. She also found issue with the hijab being a religious symbol, which in her opinion was not permitted in the courtroom stating that El-Alloul was not “suitably dressed” in accordance with the regulations of court. A hijab is not equivalent to sunglasses or a baseball cap. Muslim women who wear the hijab do so out of a sincerely held religious belief and this right is protected under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Indeed the Chief Justice of Canada recently held in R v NS that a secular approach that requires people “to park their religion at the courtroom door is inconsistent with the jurisprudence and Canadian tradition, and limits freedom of religion where no limit can be justified.” Judge Marengo failed to appreciate this. The message that this decision sends is that the courts are exclusive to people who look a certain way. If Judge Marengo’s reasoning were to
National Hijab Day By: Ms. Zahida Munthazeem I am writing this letter to the statement made in the newspaper “ The Star.com commentary It mentions “Judge Eliana Marengo has made a serious error by telling a Muslim woman that she must take off her hijab in court before her case would be heard. Her justification — that the woman was not “suitably dressed” — is wrong-headed and a troubling slippery slope.”and there have been other cases where Last week a hijabwearing Muslim woman, Rania ElAlloul, appeared on her own in a Quebec court without counsel and applied for the return of a vehicle seized through automobile insurance board proceedings. In the first few seconds of the matter being called, she was asked by the judge why she wore a scarf on her head, to which she replied that it was because she was Muslim. The judge took a 30-minute break and when she returned she told El-Alloul that unless she took off her

Senate elections: ECP slaps ban on mobile phones during polls
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has imposed a ban on carrying mobile phones or other electronic devices into the premises of polling stations (National Assembly Hall and provincial assembly halls) for Senate elections as reported by Daily Times Pakistan. According to a statement issued here on Tuesday, ECP slapped a ban on all members of National Assembly and provincial assemblies for taking with them the mobile phone or any other electronic device through which picture can be taken in the premises of polling for the Senate. ECP directed returning officers for Senate elections to ensure secrecy of ballot. “It should not be violated through any mode whatsoever by the voters”, the commission instructed. The polling for Senate will be held
on March 5. The ECP held that election for Senate will be conducted through secret ballot and drew the attention of members of National and provincial assemblies towards Article 226 of the constitution that envisages the secret balloting for the elections of Upper House of Parliament. It also noted that Section 3 of Senate Election act 1975 provides that subject of provisions of the act and rules the EC shall regulate the procedure for organizing and the conducting the election in such a manner it deem fit. The ECP also issued the final list of contesting candidate with 131 candidates vying 52 seats. With the unopposed election of two senators on technocrat and two on women reserved seats in Sindh the election will be held now on 48 seats between 127 candidates. For one general and one reserved seats in Islamabad, eight candidates are in the field whereas for four seats of FATA in Senate, 36 candidates are contesting. For eleven seats of Punjab, 16 candidates are in the field and in KPK 33 candidates are contesting for twelve seats. In Balochistan, 32 candidates are in the field for twelve seats of Senate and in Sindh, eight candidates will contest for seven general seats. procedural shift in the Senate elections at a meeting of the federal cabinet. The prime minister expressed concern over reports of alleged horse-trading, bribery and manipulation of members of the provincial Assemblies for Senate votes. He stated that it was time to take steps to make the Senate election process fair, transparent and in accordance with democratic norms. He also set up a committee consisting of the government’s top legal advisors to deliberate on the measures that could be taken to ensure that the elections are held completely above board. The committee later recommended that the polling of the upcoming Senate elections should be held via open show of hands rather than by secret ballot, as has been the norm till now.
Pakistan arrests parents for refusing polio vaccination
Pakistani authorities have arrested hundreds of parents who are refusing to vaccinate their children against polio, officials have said, as community opposition and Taliban threats block efforts to eradicate the crippling disease in one of its last strongholds, reported by Al jazeera Frustrated officials turned to police to deal with parents influenced by some clerics who decry government vaccination campaigns as a tool to undermine their Islamic values, ac-
cording to Pervez Kamal, director of health for Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa region in the northwest. “There was no other option. We have run so many awareness campaigns for the parents and general masses that there is no harm in the vaccine, but to no avail,” Kamal said on Tuesday. Pakistan reported 306 polio cases last year, out of the 359 cases recorded worldwide by the Global Eradicate Polio Initiative. Kamal said on Tuesday that a list of “chronic”
refusal cases has been prepared and warrants issued for more than 1,000 parents. “So far, we have arrested 471 parents and efforts are under way to capture others,” a police officer in Peshawar said. Once a common childhood disease, polio which can cause paralysis and mostly affects children under age five - has declined by 99 percent in the last 25 years with aggressive vaccination campaigns, according to the WHO.

Premier promises increase to Leaked files show Mosminimum wage, but not to $15 sad, Netanyahu differed on timetable for Iran nuclear program
Premier Christy Clark has rejected the idea of raising B.C.’s minimum wage to $15 an hour, but says she is exploring the idea of planned, predictable, rate hikes. Clark said she’s not willing to support a request by the B.C. Federation of Labour to increase the minimum wage from its current rate of $10.25 an hour to $15. “The economy is still quite fragile and we need to make sure we’re supporting small businesses, which are huge job creators,” Clark said. “What I have promised to do is find a predictable way for the minimum wage to go up. “And small and medium sized businesses have said that’s what they would like too. “Because they know it’s going to go up, but they want to know it’s going to go up in a predictable way so they can plan for it a head of time.” B.C.’s minimum wage had stagnated for almost 10 years until 2011 when Clark became premier. She’s raised it three times since, most recently to the current $10.25 in 2012. There are 110,400 people earning the minimum wage in B.C., which is 5.9% of all workers in the province. About 52 per cent of the minimum wage workers live with their parents, and most of those are attending school, according to government statistics. But it’s not fair to characterize minimum wage earners as teenagers with their
first jobs looking for pocket money, said Irene Lanzinger, president of the B.C. Federation of Labour, who was at the legislature this week advocating the $15 wage. “Ten thousand minimum wage workers are older than 55, they are mothers, fathers, seniors, students, people trying to get by and support their families,” said Lanzinger. She called it “shameful” that a province as wealthy as B.C. can’t set a minimum wage at a rate that lets a full-time worker rise above the poverty line. Lanzinger argued that hiking the wage would give more money to thousands of workers who would in turn spend it in shops and businesses and boost the provincial economy. Jobs Minister Shirley Bond has been tasked with setting a formula for predictable raises to the minimum wage. “One of the things I’ve done is looked across the country and in fact we’re one of, if not the only, jurisdiction that does not have a systemic, predictable increase to the minimum wage,” said Bond. Some provinces, such as Alberta, use a formula that takes into account the rate of inflation and average earnings for Alberta residents to increase the amount annually. Bond said she hopes to settle on B.C. formula “as soon as possible” and well before the end of this year. The overall number of people on minimum wage continues to drop, said Bond. As B.C. debates the issue, the Washington state legislature’s house of representatives voted this week to raise the state’s minimum wage to $12 an hour over the next four years. In the United States, cities, states and the federal government can all set minimum wages. In Canada, the rate is set by the provinces. Source: Vancouver Sun
Western leaders hint at more Russian sanctions over Ukraine
U.S. President Barack Obama and European leaders on Tuesday warned Russia that they were ready to step up sanctions if there were further violations of a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine, officials said. The threats came in statements issued after a video conference that brought together Obama and the leaders of Britain, France, Germany and Italy, as well as the head of the European Council. The virtual meeting took place amid continuing violence in Ukraine despite the two-week-old ceasefire accord reached in Minsk. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Obama used the call to condemn Russia for not following through on its agreements. “It was an opportunity ... for the president to condemn the continuing failure of Russia and the separatists it backs to abide by the commitments to which they agreed,” Earnest said. The United States has also said it is still considering the possibility of sending Kiev weapons. “Leaders will be ready to decide on further sanctions if the Minsk agreements are further violated,” said a European Union statement that was echoed by one from German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman. The office of French President Francois Hollande said the leaders agreed that a major breach of the agreement would make a “strong reaction from the international com-
munity” necessary. The video conference overlapped a speech before a joint session of Congress by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The speech stirred controversy because it was orchestrated by Obama’s Republican rivals. The French statement also said the parties wanted to bolster the resources of monitors from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), a European rights and security watchdog. European leaders on Monday said they agreed that the OSCE needed a broader role as observers of the ceasefire agreement and of the removal of weapons. Ukraine and Western governments have accused Russia of sending troops and weapons to support separatists in eastern Ukraine despite the peace deal reached on Feb. 12. Moscow has denied providing such support. On Tuesday, Kiev announced its highest casualty toll in several days, with three Ukrainian servicemen dead and nine wounded amid pro-Russian shelling. Later this week, Ukraine’s parliament is expected to back Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s request for international peacekeepers to monitor the conflict. That idea, however, has faced a chilly reception in Europe. Source: Reuters
It was a memorable address: Wielding a cardboard cartoon of a bomb with a lit fuse, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the 2012 gathering of the United Nations General Assembly that Iran was 70 per cent of the way to developing nuclear weapons – and time was running out to stop it. However, top-secret cables from Israel’s Mossad spy agency, leaked to Al Jazeera, now reveal that the country’s intelligence officials did not support that number or the dire conclusions drawn by Mr. Netanyahu. The revelation has the potential to embarrass not only the Israeli leader but those of other countries, such as Canada, who are strongly critical of Iran. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has been one of the world’s strongest supporters of Israel and has backed Mr. Netanyahu’s warnings about Iran obtaining nuclear weapons. The combative stand from Mr. Netanyahu at the UN put Mr. Harper in a squeeze between two allies, Israel and the United States – when the latter wanted to seek a diplomatic solution with Iran, rather than threaten immediate war. The Israeli leader is already at the centre of a political storm in Washington over a controversial address he is to make March 3 to the Republican-controlled Congress on the subject of Iran’s nuclear threat. President Barack Obama – tensions have long existed between the two leaders – has refused to meet with Mr. Netanyahu on this visit, pointing to a long-standing tradition of steering clear of foreign leaders in close proximity to elections. Meanwhile, nuclear talks continue between the U.S. and Iran. On Monday, officials from the two countries ended a round of talks in Geneva in which the parties are reportedly considering a proposal that would strictly limit Iran’s ability to produce nuclear material for at least 10 years. In the September, 2012, UN speech, Mr. Netanyahu had drawn a bright red line across the neck of that bomb, declaring that Iran was 70 per cent of the way to completing its “plans to build a nuclear weapon.” However, a Mossad cable, one of many obtained by the Al Jazeera satellite news network, concluded that Iran was “not performing the activity necessary to produce weapons.” Whereas Mr. Netanyahu warned the world that “by next spring, at most by next summer” Iran “will have finished the medium enrichment and move on to the final stage,” of producing weapons-grade uranium, the top-secret cable, relayed to South Africa’s State Security Agency just four weeks later, refutes such a determination. A senior Israeli official told reporters Monday there was “no discrepancy” between Mr. Netanyahu’s warning that Tehran was close to fielding nuclear weapons and Mossad’s assessment. In a CBS News interview earlier in 2012,
former Mossad chief Meir Dagan, warned at overstating the danger of Iran’s nuclear program. It would be “stupid,” he said, to put Israel on a path to war unnecessarily. The Israeli cable was part of a cache of documents apparently leaked to the Qatarbased Al Jazeera by parties unknown. The so-called “Spy Cables,” as Al Jazeera calls them, were independently authenticated by the Guardian newspaper, with which Al Jazeera shared the documents. The material includes briefings and analyses written by South Africa’s Security Agency in connection with meetings involving Israel’s Mossad, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, Britain’s MI6, Russia’s FSB and other intelligence agencies between 2006 and 2014. Almost all were marked as “confidential” or “top secret.” Other files within the trove reveal that the CIA attempted to establish contact with the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas in spite of a U.S. ban against such a meeting; that South Korean intelligence targeted the leader of Greenpeace and that South African intelligence spied on Russia over a controversial $100-million joint satellite deal. The disclosure on Iran’s lack of weaponization is likely to embarrass the Israeli leader as he faces an election in three weeks’ time, said Michael Bell, a former Canadian ambassador to Israel. All this has been happening while the P5 (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council) plus Germany pursue a framework for a permanent deal with Tehran that will keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Over the years, Canada has been somewhat vague about a timeline for Iran getting the bomb. Thenforeign affairs minister John Baird more than once argued that Iran had not made the decision to build nuclear weapons. But if it did, it would not be long before it would be in a position to “sprint” to nuclear-weapons capability within a period of months – nine to 18 months, he said in May, 2012. Mr. Baird said last year that Iran could get to that “sprint” capability quickly – and if it did, that could launch a nuclear arms race across the Middle East. Mr. Harper has consistenly supported Mr. Netanyahu, but even he did not subscribe to the immediacy of the threat asserted by the Israeli leader. “Our country has not been shy about warning the world about the danger that the Iranian regime ultimately presents to all of us,” he told Mr. Netanyahu when he met him in New York just after the UN speech in 2012. “As you know, we want to see a peaceful resolution to all this.” Source: Globe and Mail

Metro Vancouver air CRA incorrectly answered quality suffers as driving 25 per cent of business increases tax inquiries: survey
Metro Vancouver’s attempts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the region are being undermined as drivers continue to return to their vehicles in droves, according to a new study. The study, by Victoriabased Pacific Analytics, found that while greenhouse gas emissions declined during the economic downturn from 2009 to 2012, they have risen steadily since and will likely continue over the next few years as more vehicles — both private and commercial — hit the streets. Vehicles are blamed for contributing to greenhouse gases, which include carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane and other emissions that pose health risks such cancer and respiratory illnesses. According to a Metro Vancouver factsheet, passenger vehicles account for about 31 per cent of GHGs in the region. But despite a push by Metro Vancouver to get more people out of their cars and onto transit, it appears the tactic isn’t working. Jim Johnson, managing principal of Pacific Analytics, said despite a 10.6-per-cent increase in bus hours since 2007, which eliminated the equivalent of 42,000 vehicles in Metro Vancouver, many people are finding it more convenient to drive. This is attributed to factors such as higher income levels, low gas prices, limited access to transit and rising transit fares, he said. In 2013, for instance, TransLink said 4.9 million fewer passengers used the transit system compared with a year earlier, mainly because of a 10-per-cent fare increase. “The economic recession did affect some people because when it more-or-less ended, you saw more vehicles purchased. People have gone back to driving,” Johnson said. “It’s not necessarily true that people aren’t taking the bus. But as incomes rise, some people who bought bus passes may say it’s too much of a pain or if they have a job, they may need to drive.” The situation will likely have a huge effect on Metro Vancouver’s promise to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 33 per cent by 2020, Johnson said. And with another million more people — and 600,000 more cars — projected for Metro Vancouver by 2040, the situation could worsen. He maintains the regional district is being overly optimistic in the short term about its GHG goal, noting Metro Vancouver is assuming greenhouse gas emissions will fall as vehicles become more efficient, when in fact this has led people to buy bigger cars. The proportion
of small cars in Metro Vancouver has declined, to roughly 32 per cent of all vehicles in 2013 from 38 per cent in 2007. In contrast, the proportion of SUVs has risen to 22 per cent from 15 per cent over the same period and the share of large cars has increased to 20 per cent from 18 per cent. At the same time, the study found the average number of kilometres driven by passenger vehicles fell by almost five per cent from 2007 to the first quarter of 2012, but that number has risen just over two per cent between 2012 and 2014. “(Metro Vancouver) is not taking into account the number of kilometres driven is increasing,” Johnson said. “As long as don’t go into a massive recession, greenhouse gases will continue to rise.” But Greg Moore, mayor of Port Coquitlam and chair of Metro Vancouver, said while he acknowledges the number of vehicles in Metro Vancouver is increasing, the region’s analysis suggests greenhouse gas emissions will stabilize under the Metro 2040 plan, which includes higher density in regional town centres to allow people to work closer to home and better access to transit. The regional district, which is also responsible for air quality, requires new tailpipe standards for greenhouse gases and non-road emission standards for tractors and cranes, while monitoring emissions from large trucks with its Mobile Air Monitoring Unit on the roadside. It’s also keeping an eye on the fallout from the elimination of AirCare, which the regional district opposed, to see if there needs to be another model put in place to control emissions from smaller vehicles. But Moore noted transit investment is crucial to reducing emissions. He suspects many drivers have likely opted to hop in their vehicles because of “service optimization” to the transit system, which has meant buses in some areas are running only every hour instead of half-hour. The study also suggested that while there have been increases in bus service hours, the same hasn’t occurred for SkyTrain, he said. The study is not related to the upcoming plebiscite, which will ask residents to vote in favour of a 0.5-per-cent sales tax to fund transportation expansion, but Moore said it underscores the need to provide more transit services such as B-Line express buses across Metro Vancouver. Business owners who sought tax advice from the Canada Revenue Agency were given incorrect information 25 per cent of the time, according to an internal survey. The survey also found that 44 per cent of callers had to dial the help line multiple times to reach the automated system. It took the average caller nearly three attempts to reach a CRA agent. The CRA’s own findings are even worse than reports issued by the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses, which twice gave the agency’s business call centre a grade of C –. A CFIB survey conducted in the summer of 2012 found that 19 per cent of inquiries received incorrect or incomplete information from the CRA agent, and that 20 per cent of calls either did not go through or were dropped. In the wake of the CFIB’s damning analysis, the CRA ordered its own survey. In November and December of 2013, anonymous agency employees made just over 500 calls to the CRA’s three call centres dedicated to inquiries from business owners to randomly asked nine questions. The general inquiries included questions about applicable GST/ HST rates, payroll remittances and deadlines for submitting corporate income tax returns. Based on the CRA agents’ answers to those questions, the agency pegged their accuracy rate at 83 per cent in an internal report from March 2014. However, the CRA arrived at that figure after excluding one of the nine questions because it was answered correctly only 21 per cent of the time. Before that question was excluded from the survey, the overall accuracy rate of the CRA’s business help line was 75 per cent. The question, referred to as a “significant outlier,” was redacted in the internal CRA document obtained by CTV News. The CRA had previously reported a 92.5 per cent accuracy rate for business tax inquiries, based on more than 54,000 calls. “That’s an agency and a government that knows it has been caught and is trying to skew the numbers to make it look not so bad,” said NDP finance critic Nathan Cullen, who called for a full investigation into the CRA’s mistakes. “You have to look back through every case that was touched and make sure that nobody
was harmed,” he said. CFIB president Dan Kelly called the CRA survey “scandalous.” He said some owners have “not only lost their businesses, but in some cases, have lost their house or lost their marriage,” as a result of bad information provided to them. “The consequence to the individual taxpayer is high and there has been a shocking lack of accountability,” Kelly said. In a statement to CTV News, a Canada Revenue Agency spokesperson said the agency “strives to achieve 100 per cent accuracy” for both business and individual inquiries. When the CRA is “made aware that taxpayers were misinformed,” it takes steps to properly address the situation, Philippe Brideau said. He said taxpayers who believe they have been penalized because they’ve been provided incorrect information have a number of options, listed in the “complaints and disputes” section of the agency’s website. A spokesperson for Minister of National Revenue Kerry-Lynne Findlay said the CRA has already implemented improvements to its call centres and other services. Among them is a requirement that call centre agents provide their ID number to callers, thus increasing accountability. Business owners can also ask tax questions in writing or online, or use a mobile app that was launched last summer, Findlay’s office said. The CRA survey also found that 56 per cent of calls to its help line reached the automated system on the first try. The other 44 per cent of calls required “multiple dialing attempts.” It took callers an average 2.7 attempts to reach the automated phone system and 2.6 minutes to reach a live CRA agent. Some of them spent as long as 31 minutes redialling, according to the survey. The CRA’s three call centres in Saint John, Toronto and Edmonton receive an average of 3.3 million calls a year, according to the internal document. Of those, approximately 660,000 calls – or 20 per cent – are general inquiries. For individual tax inquiries, the CRA has six call centres across the country, which answered more than 14 million calls in the 2013-14 fiscal year. Source: CTV News.
Hijab ...Continued from pg 1 said. Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau also party’s secular charter, said the contro-
weighed in, describing the incident as “just plain wrong.” The National Council of Canadian Muslims, meanwhile, called on the Court of Quebec and the Attorney-General of Quebec to reaffirm the right of all Canadians to exercise their religious freedom in a courtroom. “The judge’s refusal to hear this woman’s case because she wore a headscarf is contrary to the established constitutional rights of Canadians,” Ihsaan Gardee, the group’s executive director, said in a statement. Premier Philippe Couillard said he was troubled by the incident, but was reluctant to say outright whether he disagreed with the decision. “I will be very careful because the judge is sovereign in her decisions, in her courtroom,” Couillard told reporters in Quebec City. “I am a little bit disturbed by this event, I must say.” Couillard said an infringement on religious freedom is only justified in certain situations, such as when an individual needs to be identified or security is an issue. Bernard Drainville, a leadership hopeful for the Opposition Parti Québécois and the architect of the
versy wouldn’t have come about if there were clearly defined rules in the province. “There’s no clear understanding of what is permitted and what is prohibited,” he said. Drainville’s proposed charter would have required employees in the public service, such as judges, to be neutral when it comes to religion, but wouldn’t require the same from average citizens. Haroun Bouazzi, co-president of the Association of Muslims and Arabs for a Secular Quebec, said he was “totally shocked. This woman has been penalized because of her belief, which makes the state not neutral anymore,” Bouazzi said. “We are in communication with the victim and a couple of lawyers and we think judicial procedure should be started.” Court spokeswoman Annie-Claude Bergeron said Friday the judge’s decision was final. “In law, you can’t revise your own ruling,” Bergeron said. Judge Marengo did not respond to requests for comment. Bergeron said “judges will not comment on their own decisions.” Source: CBC News

Narrated ‘Abdullah(r.a): We used to greet the Prophet while he was praying and he used to answer our greetings. When we returned from AnNajashi (the ruler of Ethiopia), we greeted him, but he did not answer us (during the prayer) and (after finishing the prayer) he said, “In the prayer one is occupied (with a more serious matter).” Volume 2, Book 22, Number 290:
Qur’an and its preservation through chain of oral tradition The Glorious Qur’an, the Muslims’ religious Scripture, was revealed in Arabic to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the Angel Gabriel (peace be upon him). The revelation occurred piecemeal, over a period of 23 years, sometimes in brief verses and sometimes in longer chapters.[1] The Qur’an (lit. a ‘reading’ or ‘recitation’) is distinct from the recorded sayings and deeds (Sunnah) of the Prophet (peace be upon him), which are instead preserved in a separate set of literature collectively called the Ahadith (lit. ‘news,’ ‘report,’ or ‘narration’). Upon receiving revelation, the Prophet (peace be upon him) engaged himself in the duty of conveying the message to his Companions (may Allah bless them all) through reciting the exact words he heard in their exact order. This is evident in his inclusion of even the words of God which were directed specifically to him, for example: “Qul” (“Say [to the people, O Muhammad]”). The Qur’an’s rhythmic style and eloquent expression make it easy to memorize. Indeed, God describes this as one of its essential qualities for preservation and remembrance (Qur’an, 44:58; 54:17, 22, 32, 40), particularly in an Arab society, which prided itself on orations of lengthy pieces of poetry. Michael Zwettler notes that: “In ancient times, when writing was scarcely used, memory and oral transmission was exercised and strengthened to a degree now almost unknown.”[2] Large portions of the revelation were thus easily memorized by a large number of people in the community of the Prophet (peace be upon him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged his Companions to learn each verse that was revealed and transmit it to others. [3] The Qur’an was also required to be recited regularly as an act of worship, especially during the daily meditative prayers (salah). Through these means, many repeatedly heard passages from the revela-
tion recited to them, memorized them and used them in prayer. The entire Qur’an was memorized verbatim (word for word) by some of the Prophet’s Companions. Among them were Zaid ibn Thabit, Ubayy ibn Kaab, Muadh ibn Jabal, and Abu Zaid. [4] Not only were the words of the Qur’an memorized, but also their pronunciation, which later formed into a science called Tajweed. This science meticulously elucidates how each letter is to be pronounced, as well as the word as a whole, both in context of other letters and words. Today, we can find people of all different languages able to recite the Qur’an as if they are Arabs themselves, living during the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Furthermore, the sequence or order of the Qur’an was arranged by the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself and was also wellknown to the Companions.[5] Each Ramadan, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would repeat after the angel Gabriel (reciting) the entire Qur’an in its exact order as far as it had been revealed, while in the presence of a number of his Companions.[6] In the year of his death, he recited it twice.[7] Thereby, the order of verses in each chapter and the order of the chapters became reinforced in the memories of each of the Companions present. As the Companions spread out to various provinces with different populations, they took their recitations with them in order to instruct others.[8] In this way,

the same Qur’an became widely retained in the memories of many people across vast and diverse areas of land. Indeed, memorization of the Qur’an emerged into a continuous tradition across the centuries, with centers/schools for memorization being established across the Muslim world. [9] In these schools, students learn and memorize the Qur’an along with its tajweed, at the feet of a master who in turn acquired the knowledge from his teacher, an ‘un-broken chain’ going all the way back to the Prophet of God. The process usually takes 3-6 years. After mastery is achieved and the recitation checked for lack of errors, a person is granted a formal license (ijaza) certifying he has mastered the rules of recitation and can now recite the Qur’an the way it was recited by Muhammad, the Prophet of God (peace be upo him). A.T. Welch, a non-Muslim orientalist, writes: “For Muslims, the Qur’an is much more than scripture or sacred literature in the usual Western sense. Its primary significance for the vast majority through the centuries has been in its oral form, the form in which it first appeared, as the “recitation” chanted by Muhammad to his followers over a period of about 20 years… The revelations were memorized by some of Muhammad’s followers during his lifetime, and the oral tradition that was thus established has had a continuous history ever since, in some ways independent of, and superior to, the written Qur’an... Through the centuries the oral tradition of the entire Qur’an has been maintained by the professional reciters (qurraa). Until recently, the significance of the recited Qur’an has seldom been fully appreciated in the West.”[10] The Qur’an is perhaps the only book, religious or secular, that has been memorized completely by millions of people.[11]
Leading orientalist, Kenneth Cragg, reflects that: “…this phenomenon of Qur’anic recital means that the text has traversed the centuries in an unbroken living sequence of devotion. It cannot, therefore, be handled as an antiquarian thing, nor as a historical document out of a distant past. The fact of hifdh (Qur’anic memorization) has made the Qur’an a present possession through all the lapse of Muslim time and given it a human currency in every generation, never allowing its relegation to a bare authority for reference alone.”[12] 1. Letters Continued from pg 2 hold up it would necessarily mean that Jewish men could not enter our courts wearing kippas, that Sikh men and women could not enter courts with turbans, that Christian men and woman could not wear crosses and so on. But this decision extends far beyond religious attire. It has the real potential to affect marginalized groups who do not fit a judge’s conception of “suitably dressed.” If a judge finds it unsuitable for a black person to wear his natural hair, will he be asked to leave? What if a judge preferred that female court attendees wore skirts to court in order to be suitably dressed? Every day I stand in a courtroom and represent people who cannot afford private counsel and who face many other barriers to accessing justice. What happened in Judge Marengo’s courtroom on last week was the antithesis of access to justice. There are dozens of Muslim women who practice law in this country wearing a hijab. They are educated, leaders within their communities, and contribute greatly to Canada. If any of us were told we were not suitably dressed for court while wearing our hijabs, we would be forced to give up our careers. I sincerely hope that Judge Marengo realizes the error in her decision, reverses her decision and offers an apology to Ms. El-Alloul. This type of intolerance has no place in our life . I hope our Prime minister will allow that as muslim we are not judged on daily basis on our attire and be able to practice our religion under the freedon of rights as individuals.
L E T T E R S Thank GOD we have the righteous people standing up for the oppressed: Sukania Pillay, the executive director for the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, told The Canadian Press that asking El-Alloul to remove her hijab was disrespectful and violated her fundamental right to freedom of religion.“But that doesn’t translate into telling people what they can and cannot wear in a manner that’s incompatible with their freedom of religion.” A lawyer for Quebec’s league for rights and freedoms said that there is no precedent for Marengo’s decision and called it “extremely personal and discriminatory.” By: Zahida Munthazeem
“Discriminated against on the basis of my religion as a Muslim.” I am woman aged 45, and was an employee of Community XYZ for the One year. I have a great track record for finishing my job on time, and maximum attendance. I feel that I have been discriminated against on the basis of my religion as a Muslim. I was left with all the work to do myself., and made fun by staff and my bosses. They made comments against islam which were not true.Lesser experienced employees have
been promoted over me. I was in the same position for the past year, and have seen my juniors get promoted ahead of me. Having suffered for a long time, I am standing up for myself. I am writing this letter to you as a last resort. My time at the company has been a good one, but this discrimination has left a bad taste in my mouth. It is really frustrating if you are not appreciated by the company for what you have worked so hard for. When I joined this company, I was assured of equal opportunity, but so far, this assurance has not been fulfilled. I have invested a good years of my life in this company, and I will fight for my dues. If this problem persists, I will be forced to hire a lawyer, and I am sure the company does not want to get the reputation of discrimination. Discrimination in the workplace regarding sex and religion is a serious offence. I hope this matter is solved soon, to the satisfaction of both parties. I hope you help a Muslims sister around the world to get equality in every aspects of life and we are treated with respect. As a minority muslim I think we are taken for granted. We need fairness treatment. I have heard of your reputation of being an honest person, so I have faith that you will certainly help me.

“Misuse of Authority” By Gulshan Aalani
Misuse of authority by the Quebec Judge Eliana Marengo’s refusal to hear case of a Muslim woman wearing headscarf sparks widespread debate for her discriminatory order: “Decorum is important: In my opinion, you are not suitably dressed: I will not hear you if you are wearing a scarf on your head, just as I wouldn’t allow someone with a hat or sunglasses or any other garment not suitable for a court proceeding”. A head scarf not suitable? What planet are we living in? Would the same order apply to H. Mary (RA) the beloved Mother of Messiah Jesus (AS) for her head covering? Judge Marengo surely displayed her hateful authority in firm voice but not in angry manner like Judge Judy, who would have screamed in establishing her rules. The judge cited Article 13 of the rules of Quebec Court, which states that “any person appearing before the court must be suitably dressed”. “Marengo’s interpretation included hijabs”. Judge has definitely misinterpreted the Article 13. The Head covering is not unsuitably dressed, but the most suitable in the human surrounding and in the Court of Creator-GOD. Who has ordained and designed the suitable dressing for (Muslim) Women. Even H. Mary (RA) covered her body and head with the Hijab, and Muslim Women are proud to carry on the same Divine tradition. This dress code is nothing new in Islam but it is the same Divine Scriptural law since the ancient time. Some Indian Hindu Women in India including my ancestral Hindu-Ismailis are still following the same law of covering head who have rejected the new dogmatic rule of ‘no covering’ and are freed from the slave like shackles of man. To impose any law against the Divine law is oppressive and a horrendous sin as it is overpowering and undermining the Power of Supreme Being who provides us food and water. Thank GOD that in the West we are independent of any man’s dogma, have freedom of choice what to wear, choose the best of holistic life and be spiritual by showing respect and obedience to the Legislated Divine Law of our Creator-GOD and it is our highest pleasure in putting on the best ‘Decorum’ divine Uniform like being on the ‘Red Carpet’ of the land, surrounded by the Angels appointed for every descent obedient human being, walking with us to protect and save from the evil spirits.Without the obedience of our Creator there is no religion, but just a Stage drama show, where there is no true secularism or pluralism.

11 T A X S P E C I A L Managing your taxes is easier than ever, thanks to the new MyCRA mobile app Jumada Al Awwal 15, 1436 March 6, 2015
March 2, The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is proud to announce the release of its new mobile app—MyCRA—available for all mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. Wondering when your next child tax benefit payment is coming? Or how much contribution room you have in your RRSP? Need help with your tax return? The CRA’s new mobile app is here to help with these and more - anywhere, anytime. Using MyCRA, taxpayers can now securely access and view: •Their tax information: •notices of assessment; •return status; •RRSP deduction and tax-free savings ac-
count (TFSA) contribution room; •Benefit and credit payment dates; •A directory of EFILE tax professionals and a listing of free tax filing software; •The date and location of Community Volunteer Income Tax Program clinics; and •The CRA’s charities listings — making it easier to choose and donate wisely to a registered charity. MyCRA is one more way the CRA is improving online services for taxpayers, offering them efficient and secure ways to manage their tax affairs anywhere, any time. MyCRA is one of many secure online services including My Account, online mail and direct deposit
Caroline Battista has a positively upbeat view of tax season, and not just because it’s the senior tax analyst’s busiest time of year. She sees filing your taxes not as something to dread but rather a moment of opportunity. “You don’t get anything back the rest of the year,” says Battista, who works for H&R Block in Vancouver. “When you fill up on gas while you’re driving your daughter to ballet, you can’t ask the attendant if you can get a little bit of money back from your gas taxes. This is the one time of year you have some control. If you miss out on credits and deductions, you’re just leaving money behind.” If you’re not sure what you can, or can’t, claim, take a look at our list of the most overlooked deductions and credits. Medical expenses “Quite often things get missed because this is a rather large umbrella and people don’t know what they’re allowed to claim,” Battista says. Some of the often-missed items that can be claimed under this umbrella, Battista says, are travel medical insurance, extended health-care premiums, and certain alternative health-care services, such as traditional Chinese medicine if you live in B.C., where the profession is regulated. (Allowable medical expenses vary from province to province.) Kids’ creative, outdoors, and development programs It’s not just painting classes or piano lessons that are eligible for the 15 per cent nonrefundable Children’s Arts Tax Credit on an amount up to $500 per child but also programs such as Brownies and Girl Guides. Other eligible programs, according to the Canada Revenue Agency, include an activity that “contributes to the development of creative skills or expertise in artistic or cultural activities; provides a substantial focus on wilderness and the natural environment; helps children develop and use particular intellectual skills; includes structured interaction among children where supervisors teach or help children develop interpersonal skills; or provides enrichment or tutoring in academic subjects”. Kids’ physical activities Take note, parents: the 15 per cent nonrefundable Children’s Fitness Tax credit has gone
up. “The children’s fitness amount used to be $500 but now people can claim a maximum of $1,000 per child for fees for membership or registration in a physical activity program,” says Jamie Golombek, managing director of tax and estate planning with CIBC Private Wealth Management . Eligible activities include sports like hockey, soccer, and gymnastics as well as less obvious ones such as horseback riding, sailing, and bowling. Public transit passes The Public Transit amount allows you to claim the cost of passes for allowed unlimited travel within Canada on local buses, streetcars, subways, commuter trains, and local ferries. “If you pay for a monthly transit pass for your child, you can claim that on your taxes too,” Battista says. Disability “A lot of people don’t realize they might qualify,” Battista says. “There is this notion that you have to be in a wheelchair. It’s important to look at all the different qualifying factors.” According to Disability Tax Service, which charges 20 per cent of a refund received for its services, the list of potentially eligible conditions is long, ranging from anxiety and ADHD to irritable bowel syndrome and personality disorders. Family Tax Cut “This one may get missed because it’s brand new,” says Golombek. “It applies if you have a spouse or [common law] partner and kids under 18, you’re able to notionally transfer up to $50,000 of taxable income from the higherto the lower-income spouse.” The maximum benefit for the non-refundable credit is $2,000. Student loan interest “If you’re repaying student loans, the interest is eligible for a tax credit, but only on federal and provincial student loans, not loans from a financial institution,” Golombek says. “If you have a student line of credit at your bank, you’re out of luck.” Certain home purchases With the Home Buyers amount, you can claim up to $5,000 if you or your spouse or common-law partner buy a qualifying home assuming you or your spouse or partner haven’t owned a home in the preceding four years. Kids’ summer camps “The cost of summer camps qualifies as childcare costs,” Golombek says. These include day camps and day sport schools as well as overnight sports schools or camps where lodging is involved Source: Yahoo

Obama v Netanyahu: The strategic conundrum
by Marwan Bishara The political rift between US President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has become evermore personal with the latter’s visit to Washington this week. But behind the personal and the political spat lies a strategic difference with dangerous implications for the Middle East, indeed the world. Netanyahu is right about US-Israeli relations; they remain solid. The “special relationship” will most probably endure his bravado, because it’s based on mutual interests, strong lobby and institutional backing in both countries. But the Israeli prime minister is either terribly dangerous or extremely delusional about how the rest of it might play out. Contrary to his claim at the Israel lobby conference on Monday, Netanyahu continues to undermine the institution of the presidency and Obama personally, knowing all too well that US support for Israel will go on unabated, as their bilateral relations continue to thrive in all spheres. Indeed, Obama has embraced Netanyahu’s narrative about Palestine as the historic home of the Jewish people, insisting Palestinians recognise Israel as the “Jewish State” as a precondition to peace. This will in all likelihood continue under, say Hillary Clinton or Jeb Bush. Deeper problem The deeper more complicated problem with the Obama-Netanyahu barney lies elsewhere. Since the US elected a left-centre president and Israel chose a rightist leader six years ago, their differences have sharpened over their contrasted perspectives on the Middle East and foreign policy at large, not their bilateral relations. The rift started after Obama’s re-election in 2012, as he began
to decouple the US mindset from that of Israel’s on doctrinal and regional strategies, especially on Iran. But in order to pre-empt Netanyahu’s rejection of Washington’s change of direction, the president made sure to embrace Israel closely and wholly during his 2013 visit to Jerusalem, just as he began to explore dialogue with Tehran. The coupling of US-Israeli mindsets has evolved over many years. It started with the Americanisation of the Israeli economy, military and polity in the 1980s and 90s. And was solidified with the Israelisation of George W Bush’s “war on terror” after 9/11. Obama, who was elected on an anti-Bush agenda, has tried to undo what some Americans termed as the “Israelification” of the US strategic doctrine that led, among others, to the invasion and occupation of Iraq. He therefore resisted all Israeli arguments to handle Iran with the same mindset that led to the blunders in Iraq, and it’s the reason why the president believes Netanyahu’s speech to Congress is counterproductive if not harmful to US interests. US interests Ever since he took office, Obama signalled to Tehran that he’s willing to extend a hand if it’s willing to unclench its fist and pursue normal relations on the basis of mutual interests and mutual respect. Once again the US president rejected Netanyahu’s emphasis on punitive actions and military solutions to Iran’s nuclear programme, in favour of a political resolution of the conflict with Tehran. The same applied to Obama’s insistence on a peaceful and speedy resolution of the Palestinian question on the basis of two sovereign independent states. But the administration’s insistence was rebuffed and even ridiculed in Israel as “Messianic” leading to more tensions in the relationship.
But such US-Israeli tensions are not new nor are they harmful. Contrary to conventional wisdom, disagreement between the world’s superpower and its small Middle Eastern ally/client has proven to be in the interest of peace and stability. Historically, the US has seen the region and the world from a different prism to that of Israel. Its global perspective and international responsibilities require a calmer, more strategic approach to regional problems, imperial as they may be at times. When there was a strategic compact, such as under with Nixon-Meir, Reagan-Begin, and George H W Bush-Sharon, their complicity generally culminated in deterioration towards more conflict and war. On the other hand, whenever Washington diverged from Israel’s positions while insisting it was for its own good, Netanyahu’s predecessors on the right were quick to chastise the US and even accuse it of betrayal. Ariel Sharon went as far as accusing Washington of selling out Israel like Europe betrayed Czechoslovakia before WWII. Netanyahu belongs to the same tradition. Reason to worry Israeli leaders like to remind the US each and every day, that Israel’s feet are too close to the fire; how it lives in a “dangerous neighbourhood” and must always be vigilant and pre-emptive in its strategic posture to insure its own survival. They’re predictably in denial over Israel’s role in destabilising the Middle East. But even when Washington guarantees Israel’s security and its military superiority over all its regional enemies combined, Israeli
leaders demand that it also see the region from its prism. But if the US were to act as frantically on Iran, or throw its military weight around the world as Israel does, say in Palestine or Lebanon, our planet would be in dire straits. It tried under George W Bush and the result has been catastrophic. That doesn’t mean US-Iranian rapprochement is a guaranteed blessing to the region. Or that the US and Iran have suddenly gone peacenik. Far from it. Indeed, judging from their complicity in Iraq and Syria, there’s every reason to worry. But neither should such a consideration be confused with the importance of a peaceful settlement of Iran’s nuclear programme, as well as a ban on all nuclear weapons in the region and beyond. The Middle East has endured the US’ unconditional support for Israel despite its decades of occupation. But make no mistake; the region can’t survive the US acting as an aggressive, paranoiac superpower, or for Israel to act with total impunity. Over $100,000 has been raised at Trudeauès Dinner
Justin Trudeau attended a large fundraiser in Surrey on Wednesday March 4th. Our own Bilal Cheema was instrumental in organizing the fundraiser. A diverse group of participants included nominated candidates, riding executives, community organizers, business folks and activists. Over $100,000 was raised at the event. Bilal Cheema spoke eloquently about hope, hard work
and the need for grass roots engagement as key contributors towards success in the 2015 election. The federal election is scheduled for October 2015 but the Prime Minister may still call it at anytime before then. The stakes are high this election and the competition just as tight between the Liberals and Conservatives.
Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau criticized the judge’s move A Quebec judge told a woman appearing in her Montreal courtroom that she would not hear her case until she removed her hijab. Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau criticized the judge’s move on Twitter “News of a judge refusing to hear a woman’s case while she wore a hijab. This incident is unacceptable. All Canadians deserve to have their rights protected, especially in a court of law. Let’s remember who we are.”

A Wake-Up Call For Muslim Parents
By: Sadaf Farooqi Parenting is the most exhausting, fulfilling, demanding and satisfying role, responsibility and full-time job anyone can ever have. Whoever has become a parent would testify to its heady highs and, sadly, sometimes mortifying lows. The moment one sets eyes and holds in one’s arms a new life – a gift from Allah that is sent so miraculously, after months of excitement and anticipation – one changes forever. The joy one feels holds no bounds. This new ‘baby’ life gives rise to new adjustments in all existing relationships, which change in order to accommodate the new arrival. As many people will tell you, they also change once they have a baby. However, after a few years pass, there are some typical statements that parents of any age can be heard making: “Kids nowadays are so ungrateful….”, “In our time, we were much more disciplined and obedient…”, “We never shouted at our parents the way kids answer us back nowadays….”, and of course, the ever-present “Because I said so!” Etc. I have hardly ever come across a parent who openly admits to having made a parenting mistake e.g. saying something like, “Had I not been lax about my daily prayers when my children were young, perhaps they too, would be more regular in their prayers today,” or “I should not have scolded my daughter in front of her friends. I think she deserves an apology,” More
often than not, we find parents acting holier-than-thou and judgmental in front of their children, discussing their children’s weaknesses before friends and relatives, and detailing how difficult their children can make life for them. However, how often do we come across a parent who would readily apologize to their children for mistreating them? Or admit to being wrong in front of them? On the contrary, parents hardly ever publicly admit to making mistakes in their children’s upbringing – at least, that is my experience. Once a young person becomes a parent, it’s all about enforcing rules, dictating orders, and establishing discipline, which is admittedly a necessary part of good parenting, but you have to have some leeway thrown in too. The young parent forgets what it was like as a child, to be caught red-handed, or worse, to be scolded or punished. It seems as if, now that a couple has become parents, they can get away with treating their children however they like. Physical and financial authority: Parents control their children’s movement within and outside the house. They control what they eat, what they wear, where they go, who they mingle with and what toys or accessories they buy. This makes a parent very strong as opposed to their child, in the first 2 decades of the latter’s life. Plus, children depend on their parents for money. They do not, and can not,
earn money. Therefore, parents have almost complete control over how they bring up their children. Having your own childhood buried in obscurity from your children: Whether you were the nastiest kid in your class, getting regular detention; or you intermittently broke windows of every house in the neighborhood during ‘ball practice’, trashed your mother’s dresser every week, stole money from your father’s wallet, drove his car without his knowledge as a 16-year-old, applied Mom’s makeup when she was napping, prank-called strangers on the phone at night, or lied about your tryst at some mall with a “friend” – everything seedy or shady about your own youth gets hidden behind the hijab of time when you become a parent yourself. You get rid of all incriminating photographs, correspondence and videos. You don’t speak freely to your old friends in front of your teenagers. No one tells your teenager that you did not pray all the five prayers, wear the headscarf, or go to the mosque. No one tells them that you danced to loud music in your room and lied about your clandestine phone calls (“I was discussing my project with [best friend]!”) when Mom walked into the room. However, if you are an Allah-fearing parent, have you really forgotten all those misdeeds? The gift of forgetfulness (nisyaan) from Allah, that wipes out your early mistakes from your children’s memories: As a parent, you will always have the upper hand with your children, because Allah will hide your mistakes and misdeeds from them, keeping up your impression of faultlessness before them, making you their role-model – an ideal person free of human errors or weaknesses. Here are a few tips that might help Muslim parents in general.Apologize when you hurt them: Saying sorry for your mistakes will exalt your ranks, and teach your children to do the same. For example, saying to your toddler: “I’m sorry I yanked your arm so hard on the road. I was afraid of the cars passing by you and was just being careful. I did not mean to be so harsh, beta,” would take a load off your back and make you feel better yourself. Admit it to your child when you’re wrong and they are right: Children can help their parents a lot, especially when the parents are over fifty. The former are in touch with the latest trends and news. If the parent has a humble attitude instead of a “know-it-all” one, they can pave the way for positive learning on both sides. Remember every day that you will be called to account for even the slightest discrepancy left in giving them their dues (“dhulm”): Just like all other relations in this world, children have rights upon parents, which they will be asked about. Just being conscious of this impending reality will enable parents to forego their children’s mistakes and shortcomings, and focus instead on their own method of upbringing their children – whether it will be accepted by Allah or not. Seek forgiveness from Allah daily for your shortcomings as a parent: In Islam, any position of authority is a position of accountability before Allah, including parenthood. The more pious a person is, the more he fears Allah regarding the high positions he occupies in this world. It is obvious that – after having gone through the pains and strains of raising young children – parents are entitled to high rights over the former. This is Allah’s own compensation method of providing worldly “perks” for this tough job. However, focusing on what rights of yours others have to give to you, instead of what rights of others you have to give to them, is not the way of the earnest believing Muslim. If your children respect you, obey you and eventually, take care of you in your old age, they are doing themselves a favor. You, on the other hand, should not consider them an ‘investment’ for this world – desiring sons more than daughters because they earn money; making them marry into affluent families and pushing them into high-flying careers so that you get to choose which “big house” with the most servants to reside in, in your old age. Rather, you should consider your children an investment just for your own Akhirah. By that, I mean that you should just do your job in instilling Islamic values in them, by imparting Islamic knowledge to them and making them live an Islamic life. After that, what they do is between them and Allah and you are essentially a valued consultant in their lives. I once heard a very pious and honorable Muslim advise us: “From birth to age 13, be strict in disciplining them; from 14 to 20, be their friend; after they are 21, let them go.”Wise words, indeed. Allah knows best and is the source of all strength.

Overcoming Humiliating Moments
By:Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor Everyone has unique personalities. As we grew up in various environments we are all exposed to different life events. All these affects our self-esteem. While some have generally experienced decades of social change leading to increased opportunities and a greater sense of self-confidence and self-worth, individually some of us do have self-esteem issues. These issues are less positive motivation for some overachievers! If you are plagued by memories of humiliating moments from your past, there are three ways to put them behind you and move on. Appreciate them: You can work your whole life to create the perfect image, but it’s those flawed moments that stand out as a testing ground for your character. The humiliating moments of your life can be pivotal events that give you the chance to grow stronger and define yourself to the world. Embrace them: Wear them like a badge of honor and learn to love the imperfection and the humanness you now posses. If you embrace embarrassment you diffuse it, just as you stop a bully in his tracks by standing up to him. Share them: Don’t think that you’re the only one who has humiliating moments in the life. So many has been in similar, if not worse, situations. When you begin to share your stories you’ll see how mistakes and embarrassing moments are a right passage for all of us. On the other hand, for some overachievers with shaky foundation of self-worth mostly look to please others as a way of feeling
better about themselves. This a kind of hurried overachiever who doesn’t stop for a second because they are always doing something for someone else - a friend, a family member, a colleague, a local community group and so on. Just remember, Self-Esteem has a very large component of Self-Respect to it. If you are a parent, the message conveyed here is that expectations of what your children can achieve has risen just as the world is becoming more competitive, creating an enormous clash between expectations and reality! As parents, educator’s and community leaders, we should try our best to build selfesteem and real coping skills in our children. Failure can be used as a motivator. Thinking that failure is bad for children is a mistake. Failure is an enormous character and self-esteem builder. If children are allowed to fail, they will have to learn both coping skills and problem solving skills, which will make them feel competent ! shabnam@skcounselling.ca

Breaking free from binge eating •High blood pressure •Heart disease •Certain types of cancer •Osteoarthritis •Joint and muscle pain •Gastrointestinal problems •Sleep apnea Causes of binge eating and compulsive overeating Generally, it takes a combination of things to develop binge eating disorder — including a person’s genes, emotions, and experience. Biological causes of binge eating disorder Biological abnormalities can contribute to binge eating. For example, the hypothalamus (the part of the brain that controls appetite) may not be sending correct messages about hunger and fullness. Researchers have also found a genetic mutation that appears to cause food addiction. Finally, there is evidence that low levels of the brain chemical serotonin play a role in compulsive eating.
What is binge eating? Binge eating disorder is characterized by compulsive overeating in which people consume huge amounts of food while feeling out of control and powerless to stop. The symptoms of binge eating disorder usually begin in late adolescence or early adulthood, often after a major diet. A binge eating episode typically lasts around two hours, but some people binge on and off all day long. Binge eaters often eat even when they’re not hungry and continue eating long after they’re full. They may also gorge themselves as fast as they can while barely registering what they’re eating or tasting.
The key features of binge eating disorder are:
•Frequent episodes of uncontrollable binge eating. •Feeling extremely distressed or upset during or after bingeing. •Unlike bulimia, there are no regular attempts to “make up” for the binges through vomiting, fasting, or over-exercising. People with binge eating disorder struggle with feelings of guilt, disgust, and depression. They worry about what the compulsive eating will do to their bodies and beat themselves up for their lack of self-control. They desperately want to stop binge eating, but feel like they can’t.
The binge eating cycle Binge eating may be comforting for a brief moment, but then reality sets back in, along with regret and self-loathing. Binge eating often leads to weight gain and obesity, which only reinforces compulsive eating. The worse a binge eater feels about themself and their appearance, the more they use food to cope. It becomes a vicious cycle: eating to feel better, feeling even worse, and then turning back to food for relief.
Signs and symptoms of binge Social and cultural causes of eating disorder . People with binge eating disorder are embar- binge eating disorder rassed and ashamed of their eating habits, so they often try to hide their symptoms and eat in secret. Many binge eaters are overweight or obese, but some are of normal weight. Behavioral symptoms of binge eating and compulsive overeating •Inability to stop eating or control what you’re eating •Rapidly eating large amounts of food •Eating even when you’re full •Hiding or stockpiling food to eat later in secret •Eating normally around others, but gorging when you’re alone •Eating continuously throughout the day, with no planned mealtimes Emotional symptoms of binge eating and compulsive overeating •Feeling stress or tension that is only relieved by eating •Embarrassment over how much you’re eating •Feeling numb while bingeing—like you’re not really there or you’re on auto-pilot. •Never feeling satisfied, no matter how much you eat •Feeling guilty, disgusted, or depressed after overeating •Desperation to control weight and eating habits
Social pressure to be thin can add to the shame binge eaters feel and fuel their emotional eating. Some parents unwittingly set the stage for binge eating by using food to comfort, dismiss, or reward their children. Children who are exposed to frequent critical comments about their bodies and weight are also vulnerable, as are those who have been sexually abused in childhood.
Psychological causes binge eating disorder
of
Depression and binge eating are strongly linked. Many binge eaters are either depressed or have been before; others may have trouble with impulse control and managing and expressing their feelings. Low self-esteem, loneliness, and body dissatisfaction may also contribute to binge eating. How to stop binge eating? It can be difficult to overcome binge eating and food addiction. Unlike other addictions, your “drug” is necessary for survival, so you don’t have the option of avoiding it. Instead, you must develop a healthier relationship with food—a relationship that’s based on meeting your nutritional needs, not your emotional ones. In order to stop the unhealthy pattern of Obesity and binge eating binge eating, it’s important to start eatOver time, compulsive overeating usually ing for health and nutrition. Healthy eatleads to obesity. Obesity, in turn, causes nuing involves making balanced meal plans, merous medical complications, including: choosing healthy foods when eating out, •Type 2 diabetes and making sure you’re getting the right •Gallbladder disease vitamins and minerals in your diet. •High cholesterol
10 strategies for overcoming binge eating
•Manage stress. One of the most important aspects of controlling binge eating is to find alternate ways to handle stress and other overwhelming feelings without using food. These may include exercising, meditating, using sensory relaxation strategies, and practicing simple breathing exercises. •Eat 3 meals a day plus healthy snacks. Eating breakfast jump starts your metabolism in the morning. Follow breakfast with a balanced lunch and dinner, and healthy snacks in between. Stick to scheduled mealtimes, as skipping meals often leads to binge eating later in the day. •Avoid temptation. You’re much more likely to overeat if you have junk food, desserts, and unhealthy snacks in the house. Remove the temptation by clearing your fridge and cupboards of your favorite binge foods. •Stop dieting. The deprivation and hunger of strict dieting can trigger food cravings and the urge to overeat. Instead of dieting, focus on eating in moderation. Find nutritious foods that you enjoy and eat only until you feel content, not uncomfortably stuffed. Avoid banning certain foods as this can make you crave them even more. •Exercise. Not only will exercise help you lose weight in a healthy way, but it also lifts depression, improves overall health, and reduces stress. The natural moodboosting effects of exercise can help put a stop to emotional eating. •Fight boredom. Instead of snacking when you’re bored, distract yourself. Take a walk, call a friend, read, or take up a hobby such as painting or gardening. •Get enough sleep. If you’re tired, you may want to keep eating in order to boost your energy. Take a nap or go to bed earlier instead. •Listen to your body. Learn to distinguish between physical and emotional hunger. If you ate recently and don’t have a rumbling stomach, you’re probably not really hungry. Give the craving time to pass. •Keep a food diary. Write down what you eat, when, how much, and how you’re feeling when you eat. You may see patterns emerge that reveal the connection between your moods and binge eating. •Get support. You’re more likely to succumb to binge eating triggers if you lack a solid support network. Talking helps, even if it’s not with a professional. Lean on family and friends, join a support group, and if possible consult a therapist.

YOUTH/KIDS
Image Is Not Everything
By Touyab Waseem Celebrity status; that awe-inspiring, much envied, ultimate goal of the ‘average’ person in society. To be admired. To be noticed. To be glorified. Is this a disease or a result of natural ambition? Is the celebrity some sort of superhuman figure, or has the person behind the status lost that bit of humanity? In this day and age the celebrity has power because of their apparent financial wealth and fame. Thus in this materialistic world it comes at no surprise that celebrities are idolised due to the emphasis in society on money and one’s reputation among their peers. Movie stars, sports people, music idols are all grossly overpaid as we know. In a world of marketing and image theirs is the prosperity easily gained. Then we have the source of their fame: the media. That widely despised yet hugely popular source of information documenting the world’s trials and tribulations. They are determined to undermine people one day and exaggerate their praise the next. The question I ask myself regularly is: if the media was not there at the film premiere, at the all-important sports event, or in the lives of musicians would they be as popular? More importantly, would we care about the lives of others we deem as our equals if they are given as much coverage as us all? So the famous person becomes world renown and they have their moment in the spotlight. After that, they are forgotten until they improvise with a new image more “in with the times” or failing that using self degradation as a method of self-promotion. Do we really want this as the example for living our lives? We shape our own image to go along with the current fashion yet we don’t get any recognition. In fact we try to fit in with the crowd in an effort to be or look normal whilst we also aspire to have the fame and fortune as the well-documented persons of the world. Now we are contradicting ourselves.
Behind all the glitz and the glamour one has to look through to the heart of the wellknown person’s life. They are not allowed privacy, something everyone needs to stay sane. Their quality of life is determined by everyone else but themselves, causing insecurity. They frequently go down the extreme party lifestyle, usually resorting to drugs and many sordid activities usually well documented by their long lost friend the media. Theirs is the life of insecurity, instability, and most importantly discontent. Let’s face it; we can all wear a smile when there’s a camera crying for our attention. We can all put a brave face on our lives when we fear for the judgement others will come to on our lives. The life of a celebrity is not as it seems, my friends. Now let me move onto a positive solution. We have been rewarded with the greatest example humanity has ever known, even acknowledged as the most influential figure of the previous millennium by a western poll. The Prophet Muhammad (saw) was the person for whom this world was created. The perfect human, he needed no marketing for anybody to know of his qualities. A man who was evidently far superior yet taught humility and sought more to relate to humanity than seek reverence and elevation. If there was ever an example for us to appreciate and follow, we must realise that we have been given one already. His is the peaceful life of contentment, prayer, contemplation, wisdom and above all, endless praise of Allah. We were given the word of Allah, then the example for which to abide by. No matter how many times this simple sentence is repeated we are still blind to it, proving the ignorance of us all. The celebrity life is very a difficult goal to attain, yet to follow the example of the Prophet (saw) is merely a matter of choice. I will leave you the readers to decide which is the easiest and which is the most rewarding in this life and the Hereafter
Miracle New Stories Series:
Greed-A-Curse
By Fatima Nadeem Grade 6, Surrey
Once upon a time there lived a cloth merchant in a village with his wife and two children. They were indeed quite welloff. They had a beautiful hen which laid an egg every day. It was not an ordinary egg, rather, a golden egg. But the man was not satisfied with what he used to get daily. He was a get rich-trice kind of a person. The man wanted to get all the golden eggs from his hen at one single go. So, one day he thought hard and at last clicked upon a plan. He decided to kill the hen and get all the eggs together. So, the next day when the hen laid a golden egg, the man
“Giving back: A Noteworthy Global Leader in our Community”
Local Surrey resident, Ayesha Khan, 21, is a third year sociology undergraduate student who is currently undertaking various volunteer projects. Khan, who is the current BC board member and Secretary for Human Concern International, will be travelling to Reyhanli, Turkey this coming April. She will be using her current undergraduate studies in sociology- specifically social justice and global studies to help implement positive changes at Al Salam- a Syrian refugee school. Khan will be using her TESOL certification (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) to assess the current English curriculum being used, in addition to conducting female empowerment classes to Al Salam’s female students, as well as leadership workshops for the entire student population. After Ayesha’s volunteer experience in Reyhanli, she will be travelling to Accra, Ghana, West Africa, where she will be following through with a charity initiative she started last summer. This past summer she was a student in a competitive history and archaeology Harvard Summer School program which focussed on the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, the African Diaspora and Slave Roots Tourism, where she spent two and a half months in Ghana. Prior to departing for her international studies in West Africa, Khan organized to take twenty five soccer balls donated by Akal Football Club with her; with the help of a few of Harvard Summer School peers- in-
cluding local resident Emma Cleveland, she conducted a fourty four player friendly soccer tournament in Legon- a suburb of the nation’s capital Accra, where all teams took home soccer balls at the tournament’s end. Soccer clubs currently involved in Ayesha’s “Leagues to Legon” project are: Akal Football Club and Surrey Football Club. Ayesha is scheduled to arrive in Ghana on April 28th, where she will be working with Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu who is the Director of Sports at the University of Ghana to distribute an even larger donation of soccer uniforms, balls and other equipment to underprivileged schools in the Greater Accra area. Presently, Ayesha is looking for corporate sponsors to help with shipping costs of the soccer equipment.
On March 13th, 2015, Ayesha will be hosting a charity benefit ball at Grand Taj banquet hall in Surrey; partial proceeds of this ladies-only evening will go to the expansion of the Al Salam school as well as towards the “Leagues to Legon” project. caught hold of it, took a sharp knife, chopped off its neck and cut its body open. There was nothing but blood all around & no trace of any egg at all. He was highly grieved because now he would not get even one single egg. His life was going on smoothly with one egg a day but now, he himself made his life miserable. The outcome of his greed was that he started becoming poorer & poorer day by day and ultimately became a pauper. How jinxed and how much foolish he was. So, the moral of the story is- one who desires more, looses all. One should remain satisfied with what one gets. OPEN

24 S P O R T S Pakistan must beat top sides to regain confidence: Waqar Jumada Al Awwal 15, 1436 March 6, 2015
Pakistan coach Waqar Younis on Wednesday targeted big-hitting South Africa, saying his team must beat a strong outfit to prove they belong at the World Cup. Pakistan expectedly made short work of the United Arab Emirates in their Pool ‘B’ game with an emphatic 129-run win to increase their tally to four points in as many games. They now play South Africa in Auckland on Saturday in a crunch match in which their qualification for the quarter-finals will largely depend. Waqar said the two wins after two losses — the first win was against Zimbabwe on Sunday — gave the team much-needed confidence. “Look it [win] definitely changed the body language of the players because a win always make you feel comfortable and confident, but I still feel that we need to win against a bigger team like South Africa to tell the world that we are around,” said Waqar. Waqar agreed
Pakistan were not looking as commanding as South Africa who have posted back-toback 400-plus totals in their last two wins. “Maybe you might be thinking that we are not playing well but we are missing two of our key players,” said Waqar of suspended duo of Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Hafeez. Hafeez also injured his calf before the World Cup and returned home to be replaced by Nasir Jamshed. “The tournament will get tougher and tougher and we should be ready for that,” added Waqar. “Of course we can, we have done it in the past, it’s not asking too much and we have beaten South Africa in South Africa,” said Waqar of Pakistan’s 2-1 one-day series win over the Proteas in late 2013. Waqar, under whom Pakistan finished as semi-finalists at the 2011 World Cup, said his team was capable of picking up steam. “I think the crucial game will be against South Africa
not only for qualifying but also for a morale booster. We need to beat a top team to get our confidence back.” Waqar said the two wins over Zimbabwe and the UAE had restored belief. “Of course I am relieved, there is no doubt about that but the tournament is still open and we are keen to do well and this win will give us a boost and positive thinking for the next games.” Waqar agreed Pakistan should have won by at least 150 runs against the UAE but paceman Mohammad Irfan’s injury affected the progress. “We should have won by more runs but not having Irfan affected us. We wanted to improve the net run-rate which is also very important but they also batted well,” said Waqar. Meanwhile, Waqar has urged the ICC and other cricketing countries to return to playing matches in the strife-torn nation. Pakistan have not played a series at home since February 2009 when
