B.C. Transport Minister rules out TransLink reform

British Columbia’s Transportation Minister has ruled out any reforms to the controversial Vancouver region transit authority to help mayors and their allies win a plebiscite on a new tax to finance transit expansion, dismissing concerns about the issue

as a “red herring.” Todd Stone’s comments Tuesday come amid polls and public comment that suggest anger over TransLink is driving some voters to oppose the proposal to add 0.5 per cent in the Lower Mainland to the 7-per-cent provincial sales tax, to raise money for such new projects as a new Vancouver subway and light rail in Surrey. “At this point in time, the province has no plans to make any further improvements to governance at TransLink. This particular issue, we believe, is a red herring in this campaign and we believe it’s a distraction,” Mr. Stone told reporters during a news conference in Stanley Park. He was answering a question about whether Continued on pg 6

Is ‘Karachi-Terrorism’ nose-diving?

Pakistani born Altaf Hussain (Altaf Bhai) founded an ethnic political party called “Muhajir Qaumi Movement” in the mid eighties. The party mainly comprised of Urdu speaking community. Later on, party name was altered to “Muthidda Qaumi Movement.” Members of the “migrant-community” are normally coerced to follow their master Altaf bhai’s commands. The manipulative MQM loves to be onboard with all ruling parties. Karachi Criminal Cases: Amid his politics of ethnicity and fear, Altaf Bhai was severely involved in committing atrocities on human lives by running his own private jail with torture cell in Karachi. According to a press release, the accused Umair Siddiqui also revealed that a former deputy convener of MQM’s coordination committee, Anis Qaimkhani, had presided over a meeting at Khursheed Begum Memorial Hall which was attended by former KTC in-charge Hammad Siddiqui, all sector-incharges and joint sector-incharges of the party. During the meeting in 2008, MQM’s Deputy Convener Qaim khani allegedly directed to speed up targeted killings in the metropolis on ethnic/linguistic basis. Pak Media seems to be gutless when it comes to paint true picture of Altaf Bhai and the MQM. All TV channels feel coerced to cover his telephonic addresses from London. On the contrary, PTI chairman blames Altaf Bhai for inciting violence and soliciting murder after the May 2007 riot in Karachi. Furthermore, Altaf Bhai benefited from the NRO (national reconciliation ordinance 2009) and had all his

Human Rights in Canada By:Zahida Hamid I am writing this letter in response to comments made by the prime minister after he stated in the House of Commons on Tuesday about the face-covering veil worn by some Muslims comes from a culture that is “antiwomen.” The way Prime minister mentioned it is out of context, Fernandez (2009) suggested that the western concern for Muslim women is merely a shield for anti-Muslim sentiment. Harper has brainwashed conservatives that it’s alright to not be respectful of other peoples choices. Great speech! Hearing this speech and seeing all the disrespectful comments that brainwashed conservatives are saying proves how right everything he said is. Good for him someone needs to remind him and all the conservative supporters we are all immigrants. That cross you bare is not a symbol of Canada it is a choice you made to a religion of your choice I would not ask you to take it off. Where exactly did he say being beheaded because he’s not Muslim is okay? This is exactly what he is warning against, you are so brainwashed against Muslim people that you think the poor lady who went to court in a Hijab has intentions of beheading you because of her religious and ethnic background. There is a very small percentage of Muslim people who are extremists with ill intentions towards western society. Your neighbor who happens

3576 charges and cases of corruption dropped. In 1999, General Musharraf disclosed that Altaf Hussain had received funding from India for terrorism. Altaf is also accused of inciting violence in Karachi after his party’s leader Zahra Shahid Hussain was killed on 18 May 2013. A detained MQM member confessed of having committed target killings over political rivalry in the city and named a Muttahida office bearer involved in 2012 Baldia Town fire killing 258 factory workers. Umair Siddiqui had formed a 23-member “Target Killers Squad” on the directives of former in-charge of MQM’s Karachi Tanzeemi Committee (KTC), Hammad Siddiqui which killed around 120 people on political grounds. It was also confessed that approximately 250-300 target killers reside, or are in hiding, in the neighborhoods surrounding the MQM headquarters. Umair was among dozens of Muttahida Qaumi Movement affiliates arrested on March 11 when Rangers conducted a raid at the party’s headquarters, called 90 (Nine Zero). London Criminal Cases: In 1991, MQM chief escaped to London amid violence in Karachi and sought asylum and became a British citizen in 2002. Sadly, in September 2010, one of the founding members of the MQM, Imran Farooq, was murdered in northwest London. British police raided the MQM office in connection with this case in 2012. On 20 June 2013 a Metropolitan Police team investigating Imran Farooq’s murder raided Altaf bhai’s house and spent 55 hours in searching through.

Pictures of two Pakistanis allegedly involved in his assassination were finally released in 2014; they are in protective custody of Pak authorities and will be handed over to Scotland yard when requested. Secondly, London’s Metropolitan Police started a money-laundering probe against Altaf after they recovered money from his house in searches in December 2012 and June 2013. On 3 June 2014 he was arrested in London on charges of money-laundering following a raid by Metropolitan Police at his residence and office. He was released on bail on 6 June 2014. Weapons: A dealer in Quetta procures weapons for MQM’s armed wing. The MQM’s member confessed to buying 40 Kalashnikovs, 8 LMGs, 1 rocket launcher, 6 G3s, 5 China rifles and 3 MGs, 8 LMGs, one rocketlauncher. During investigation, it came to light that following the raids and operations by law enforcement personnel in the city, all sector incharges were instructed by the party to withdraw their excess weapons at the party headquarters, Nine-Zero. The weapons were transported to some other place from various locations through Ambulance Service. Rigged 2013 elections: As ordered by Umair Siddiqui 60 to 70 MQM workers in Gulistan-e-Johar managed to cast fake votes in favour of MQM candidate Faisal Subzwari at the polling stations in the Maymar sector. As alleged, the presiding officers were called to the sector office and were made to agree to fake balloting. And, 15-20 boxes filled with fake ballots were given to the presiding officers. Other Serious Questions: (1) Why did Altaf Bhai disgrace national flag at the tomb of Mr. Jinnah

to be brown and has children that go to school with your children is most likely not one of them. They are Canadian citizens just like us who don’t enjoy being beheaded for any reason, they just want to do life and go to court and pay their traffic tickets and not be discriminated against daily for something they have no part of. What if the entire population of white people were blamed for what the Westboro Baptist Church stands for? That’s the logic you’re using here.Since September 11, 2001, Muslims in North America have found themselves under a new intense scripting – what Alan lebleigez, a European Union parliament member has called Islam phobia (Bishrnd). Discrimination against and harassment of women dressed in hijab in countries such as Canada has shocked the Muslim community and reiterated their status as that of the “other”. Purdah has become symbolic of this otherness. In response this is a form of cultural imperialism, Muslim are re-asserting their identity including wearing hijab. However Hijab makes westerners feel uncomfortable because with it, women seem to become invisible and a negative image of purdah and hijab is still very evident in the west. (Bullock 2001). Canada has also banned face veils at citizenship oath ceremonies and is considering banning this in schools, hospitals and government buildings. Muslim women have been accused of bringing backwardness to Canada. However forming women to conform to Canadian ideals of dress and give up a symbol of her Muslim identity is a form of discrimination. Readers might ask might this happening in a multicultural country like Canada?. The answer is in through which lens we as individual looking for answer? Are we feeling opposition and feel a sense that Hijab should

be something of a tool for vote. As a Muslim I will invite the Prime Minster for dinner to see through my lenses how as we Muslim spends our day and maybe that might change his perspective about things.

‘India’s Daughter?’ By: Gulshan Alani No, she is not only India’s daughter but ‘our daughter’ the world’s daughter:Dearest Jyoti Singh a 23 yr old Medical student, a victim of brutal barbaric and brazen crime of gang rape by 6 men resulted in her tragic death. The most gruesome brutality by these devil demons that gives shiver to the spine. The punishment for such is only: ‘Death penalty’ without delay. As even according to the Divine legislated law of death penalty for such infidels. One of them the Bus driver whining in his interview, blaming the victim implying hat the victim should keep quiet and allow rape”.He also, declared that giving the death penalty to any would be wrong as the future rapists will rape and won’t let her go as usual but now surely she will be killed after rape; as there are many women raped and keep quiet about it”. There is a long line of rape victims in India, but the same situation is all around the world including the Western countries. So this cannot be blamed on just poverty, or academic education, but lack of ethics, moral values and many other 50 shades of darkness of Alcohol etc. The Indian Gov. should adopt one of the best Western ‘Care’ system of Social Assistant for the poor and remove the Street Children beggars, to honor our daughter Jyoti who helped and rescued a beggar young boy who was beaten by the police for stealing. (Mazaar e Qaaid)? (2) How can he be a patriotic Pakistani, as he strongly apologized to audience in India for the 1947 creation of Pakistan? (3) Why is he still maintaining his emotional alliance with India? Turning point: Former DG Rangers Lt-Gen Rizwan Akhtar, who, on account of his experience in dealing with the city’s inner working, had a deep insight into Karachi’s many complexities. Now, the Rangers have evolved into a fairly autonomous entity with its own intelligence gathering and urban counterterrorism units. Currently, Gen. Rizwan has better understanding with the federal government and an exceptionally healthy equation with Army Chief General Raheel Sharif, therefore, he has made his plans of defanging Karachi’s powerful war-lords with a long-term super effective policy. Saulat Mirza death row prisoner whose death warrant is currently on hold - should remain in protective custody till all truth is verified. He has significant material evidence to substantiate case against the embattled MQM and its leadership. This time, it’s a different ballgame. Laws have been amended. Legal loopholes have been plugged. The combination of Rangers, Pak Army and the “constitutional amendment 21” empowering the military courts is a good news for the country bad news for MQM and all other Terrorist organizations involved in proxy war against Pakistan, indeed. topsies, but has never seen such brutality in his 29-year career.“Each country has its own appalling bloody tally-- A rape occurs every 20 minutes. In England and Wales, 85,000 women are raped every year. In Denmark one in five women has experienced a sexual assault: Rape, acid attacks, murder, domestic violence, the termination of female fetuses, sex trafficking and FGM are all manifestations of male power”. A psychiatrist in Delhi’s Tihar Jail, where Singh is lodged, tells an Interviewer film maker Israeli born Udwin that he knows of rapists who have committed as many as 200 rapes before they are ever caught. As recently as February this year, a 28 yr old mentally challenged woman was gang-raped by nine men in Rohtak, Haryana for over three hours “Just over two years after Jyoti’s rape, a woman was raped by four men, beaten and her eyes gouged out”. Gaurav, a 34-year-old man serving 10 years for raping a five-year-old. He said, ‘She was a beggar girl, her life was of no value.”: Her mother is a beggar”.“The protests that followed the death of Jyoti Singh may have been the largest against rape, but they were certainly not the first. Earlier high-profile crimes such as the 1972 Mathura custodial rape case also led to legal reform, and laid the groundwork for the development of the protest constituency that filled Delhi’s political corridor from Rashtrapati Bhawan to India Gate, protesting the country’s tragic problem of systematic violence against women, in what ultimately turned into a war zone of tear gas, Water cannons, laathi strikes, and police brutality and violence”. British High Commissioner to Pakistan Philip Barton held a meeting with Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali in Islamabad on Wednesday and discussed matters pertaining to Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chairman Altaf Hussain, according to BBC Urdu. During the meeting, which took place at the Punjab House, Nisar shared a copy of the case registered against Altaf in Karachi by Rangers. On Tuesday, Rangers officials filed a case against Altaf Hussain for threatening the paramilitary force. Rangers spokesperson Col Tahir Mehmood, who filed the case against the political party, claimed that following the raid on MQM Headquarters in Karachi’s Azizabad neighbourhood, Altaf – in an interview on Geo News –

threatened members of the paramilitary force who were involved in the operation. The interior minister also informed the British High Commissioner about other details of the Rangers’ raid at MQM headquarters including the arrest of top target killers and recovery of a huge cache of arms and ammunition. Last week, Rangers officials conducted an unprecedented raid on the MQM’s headquarters. A number of party workers, including MQM’s Rabita Committee member Amir Khan, were detained during the raid. Two convicted criminals and a huge cache of arms and ammunition were also recovered during the raid. According to sources, the British High Commissioner was requested by Nisar to share the information with authorities in the UK, including Scotland Yard,

which is already investigating Altaf Hussain in connection with the murder of Dr Imran Farooq and charges of money laundering. This is not the first time Altaf will be brought into the focus of British authorities. Earlier in February, the London-based MQM supremo invited the wrath of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan when he made derogatory remarks against PTI women and had also alleged that PTI’s container protest in Islamabad last year had been the site of nefarious activities. PTI’s information secretary, Shireen Mazari, who was particularly targeted by Altaf in distasteful remarks, had written a letter to Barton, levelling accusations against the MQM chief and had called upon the British government to take action against him

‘Major gaps remain’ in Iranian nuclear talks

Negotiations between Iran and the Western powers over the Islamic republic’s nuclear programme have yielded no breakthrough, and major gaps remain, sources have told Al Jazeera. US Secretary of State John Kerry and his Iranian counterpart met early on Tuesday in the Swiss city of Lausanne as they continued the talks. A March 31 deadline looms for Kerry and Mohammad Javad Zarif to agree the outlines of an agreement, over the objections of US and Iranian hardliners wary of any deal. European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said that all sides were aware how important it is to seal a good deal and that it was not clear whether “a technical solution” to fill the remaining gaps can be found. “I see the elements for a deal to be reached but I still see the gaps that need to be filled,” Mogherini, who is negotiating with Iran on behalf of the world’s five nuclear powers and Germany, said. “We’re still making progress but there is a long way to go if we’re going to get there,” British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said, after talks in Brussels with his French, German, EU and Iranian counterparts. The talks were aimed at narrowing gaps in the positions between Iran and the world powers, as part of a 15-month negotiating process that could see Iran freeze its nuclear programme for at least a decade in exchange for the gradual lifting of international sanctions. Iran says the programme is aimed at generating electricity and at medical research, but some in Europe and the US fear it is trying to covertly build atomic weapons. “It’s always useful to talk but we, the French, want a solid deal,” said French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius. “Certain

Syria chlorine gas attack evidence of ‘fresh war crime’

points are yet to be resolved, we hope we will be able to resolve them but as long as it’s not done, it’s not done.” The world powers and Iran have set an end-of-March deadline to reach a framework accord on the way ahead. Some officials have said persistent differences mean negotiators could settle for an announcement that they’ve made enough progress to justify further talks. The meeting between Kerry and Zarif included US Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz and Iran’s nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi, who also met on Sunday to negotiate technical details of Iran’s nuclear programme. Senior officials from the world powers will continue negotiations with Iran in Lausanne on Wednesday. Zarif, who represented Iran in Brussels, will also hold several days of discussions with the US secretary of state in Switzerland this week, as momentum builds in the nuclear negotiations. Israel and some Western and Gulf Arab countries suspect Iran of ambitions to create an atomic weapon. The Islamic republic denies that accusation. Reporting from Lausanne, Al Jazeera’s diplomatic editor James Bays said: “John Kerry doesn’t just have to do serious diplomacy here to get a deal, but if he does get a deal, he has to do serious damage limitation with key actors in all of this.” “The Saudis say if Iran has nuclear technology then Saudi should have nuclear technology and they signed a memorandum of understanding on that very issue with South Korea just a week ago. Other countries in the Gulf are thinking along similar lines.” Under a November 2013 interim deal with the six world powers, Iran stopped expanding its activities in return for minor sanctions relief. The US and Iran have not had diplomatic relations for 35 years but the 2013 election of President Hassan Rouhani resulted in a minor thaw and a diplomatic push to resolve the more than decade-old nuclear standoff. Since then the parties have been pushing for a lasting accord, amid the alarm of Israel, US Republicans and Gulf Arab states warning the US administration over a bad deal. Source: Al-Jazeera

An alleged chlorine gas attack by the Syrian government in a rebel-held town is evidence of new war crimes, right body Amnesty International has said. The London-based human rights organisation said on Tuesday that the alleged chlorine gas attack in Idlib that activists said killed an entire family, is evidence of more war crimes by the Syrian government. “These horrific attacks that resulted in civilians, including small children, suffering excruciating deaths, are yet more evidence that the Syrian government forces are committing war crimes with impunity,” said Philip Luther, Middle East and North Africa Programme Director at Amnesty International. “The situation in Syria must be referred to the International Criminal Court as a matter of urgency.” Three children, their mother and father, and their grandmother suffocated to death after the barrel bomb attack in the town of Sarmin in southeast Idlib province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The Britain-based monitoring group told AFP news agency that doctors in Sarmin concluded that the manner of death indicated a gas, possibly chlorine, had been emitted from the barrel bombs. A Syrian military spokesperson has denied responsibility for the attacks. Amnesty also said in another report on Tuesday that the Syrian government’s attack on a bastion of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group in 2014 killed 100 civilians and carries “every indication of being war crimes”. Amnesty defined the attack launched by the government in November 2014 on the city of Raqqa as a series of “ruthless

air strikes”. It said the strikes carried out between November 11 and 29 killed 115 civilians, including 14 children, and hit non-military targets including a mosque, a transport hub and a busy market. Raqqa is the self-proclaimed capital of ISIL, but Amnesty said there was no indication that fighter positions were the target of the series of strikes. “Syrian government forces have shown flagrant disregard for the rules of war in these ruthless air strikes,” Amnesty’s Luther said. “The government appears indifferent to the carnage caused by these strikes, refusing even to acknowledge civilian casualties they have caused.” Luther acknowledged that Raqqa is a stronghold of ISIL members, but said their presence did not justify attacks on civilian targets. It urged an arms embargo to “stem the flow of weapons being used to commit these crimes”. ISIL controls chunks of territory in Syria and Iraq where it has declared an Islamic caliphate. For its part, Syria’s state news agency said the country’s air defence forces shot down a US reconnaissance aircraft. “Syrian air defences brought down a hostile US surveillance aircraft over north Latakia,” the Syrian state news agency SANA reported. The US military confirmed that it had lost communication with an unarmed Predator drone over northwest Syria on Tuesday and was looking into the claims it was brought down. If confirmed, it would be the first time that Syrian forces have attacked a US aircraft since the coalition fighting the IISIL began raids against the armed group in Syria in September. He also announced that the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) will receive new staffing and programming resources to further assist Canadians doing business with the world. The TCS has more than 160 trade offices in Canada and around the world to help provide export advice and guidance to entrepreneurs. Today’s announcements build on the Government’s commitment to encourage and support entrepreneurship by connecting them with the tools and resources they need to succeed. Small and medium-sized enterprises represent 99 per cent of all businesses in Canada and account for nearly 90 per cent of jobs in the private sector. Following the conclusion of negotiations of the trade agreement with the European

Union and the coming-into-force of the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement on January 1st, 2015, Canadian businesses will soon benefit from preferential access to more than half of the entire global marketplace. These measures build on the Government’s Global Markets Action Plan’s goal to nearly double the number of SMEs exporting to emerging markets to 21,000 and our “Go Global” export workshops that provide SMEs the tools and practical information they need to take advantage of international business opportunities to export. The announcements made today were informed by consultations with SMEs and would be implemented on an expedited basis.

Universal drug plan Niqab controversy: Judge could save billions:study struck down ban without referring to charter

A universal drug plan could reduce spending on prescription medications in Canada by billions each year, a new Canadian study suggests, which contradicts long-held beliefs that such coverage would put too much strain on the public purse. Researchers say that if Canada could bring drug prices in line with what other developed countries pay and boost rates of generic drug use, a universal drug plan could reduce total spending on prescription drugs in this country by $7.3 billion per year, a 32 per cent decrease. Government costs under a universal drug plan would only increase by about $958 million, the researchers said. It may seem counterintuitive that it is possible to save money when implementing a universal drug benefit plan, said Dr. Steven Morgan, professor of health policy at the University of British Columbia School of Population and Public Health. But Canada is currently not purchasing prescription drugs on the global market in the most costeffective and efficient way, he said. “Because we don’t have a single-payer system, because we don’t have a single drug plan for any given province or for the entire country, we end up fragmenting our purchasing power,” Morgan told CTV News. “So by having a single-payer system through a universal pharmacare program you create much stronger buying power on the world market, and it’s through that buying power that you get better prices.” For example, under the current system, Canada pays up to five times as much for the same generic drugs as New Zealand does, Morgan noted. “In many cases, they are from the same company,” he said. The study was published Monday in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. The researchers note that all countries with universal health insurance offer universal drug coverage, with the exception of Canada. Currently, prescription drugs in Canada are funded by what the researchers call “a patchwork” of public and private plans that vary among the provinces and leave “many Canadians with little or no drug coverage at all.” Government drug plans, both federal and provincial, cover about 36 per cent of the total prescription drug costs in Canada, while private plans cover another 36 per cent of total costs. Using data from the 2012-13 fiscal year, the researchers determined that governments already spend $9.7 billion on public drug plans in Canada, including cov-

erage for First Nations populations, senior citizens and social assistance recipients. Another $2.4 billion is spent on drug plans for public sector employees. Therefore, governments are already paying the majority of prescription drug costs in Canada, “but they’re doing it in a market that has inflated prices and doesn’t always have the cost-effective product choice decisions being made,” Morgan said. Meanwhile, private sector spending on private health plans accounts for $5.7 billion, and patients without insurance pay another $4.5 billion in out-of-pocket expenses. Using the 201213 data, the researchers created three scenarios for a universal drug plan: an expected outcome, and then best- and worst-case scenarios. They looked at prescribing patterns and costs of different drugs, as well as the three sources of funding: public drug plans, private plans and out-of-pocket spending. They determined that overall spending under a universal drug plan would drop to $15.1 billion, or by $7.3 billion. The best-case scenario calls for a $9.4 billion reduction, while the worst-case scenario calls for a $4.2 billion reduction. While the study predicts a $958 million increase in cost for government, the best-case scenario model anticipates savings of $2.9 billion. The worst-case model calls for an increase of $5.4 billion. For the private sector, the researchers found that employers and unions that offer drug benefits could save $8.2 billion if a universal drug plan were in place. The best-case scenario for these private plans is $9.6 billion in savings, while the worst-case scenario is still $6.6 billion in savings. The researchers note that factors have not been included in their study that could result in even further savings to government. Universal drug coverage would eliminate the need to offer tax incentives to employers to provide benefits for their employees. A single-payer system would also reduce administrative costs, they said. Among the losers under a universal drug plan would be drug companies, who would sell their products at a reduced price, and chain drug stores that make a significant amount of money off of Canada’s expensive drug pricing regime, Morgan noted. However, access to medication could also reduce demand for other health services, which would reduce spending in other areas of the health system, the researchers concluded. Source: CTV News

When Federal Court Judge Keith Boswell ruled last month that a woman could wear a niqab while taking her oath of Canadian citizenship, supporters may have thought the decision was another victory for charter rights. During the controversy over the niqab ban, the charter was certainly cited, in particular regarding religious freedom and freedom of expression rights. But in his ruling, Boswell avoided any charter issues, focusing not on whether the woman’s rights had been violated, but rather the legality of the ban. The case itself involves Zunera Ishaq, a Pakistani woman and devout Sunni Muslim who is seeking Canadian citizenship. Based on her religious beliefs, Ishaq wears a niqab, or veil, to cover most of her face when out in public. In 2011, then immigration minister Jason Kenney issued a new policy manual stating that candidates for citizenship must remove any kind of face covering when taking the public citizenship oath. It’s a “public declaration that you are joining the Canadian family and it must be taken freely and openly,” Kenney told CBC News at the time. While applying for citizenship in 2013, Ishaq had agreed to unveil herself to an official before taking the citizenship test. But she objected to removing her niqab at the public swearing-in ceremony. Ishaq, a permanent resident, later sued the government, arguing, in part, that the ban against her wearing the niqab during the ceremony was an infringement of her charter rights. Boswell, however, in rendering his decision, thought it “imprudent to decide the charter issues that arose” in this case, instead saying the “evidentiary record was adequate to decide the matter.” “A court will look at whether a law violates the Charter of Rights and Freedoms as a kind of last resort,” said Audrey Macklin, a professor and chair of human rights law at the University of Toronto. “Courts don’t tend to go to the charter first, they tend to go to the charter last.” So Boswell focused on whether the government had violated its own law — the Citizenship Act — by

imposing such a ban. Under the section “Ceremonial Procedures of Citizenship Judges,” the act states that a citizenship judge shall “administer the oath of citizenship with dignity and solemnity, allowing the greatest possible freedom in the religious solemnization” of taking the oath. In his ruling, Boswell said that Kenney’s policy manual that banned the wearing of the niqab while taking the oath contradicted the act. A judge couldn’t comply with both the policy manual, which said one thing, and the act, which said another, Boswell suggested. “How can a citizenship judge afford the greatest possible freedom in respect of the religious solemnization or solemn affirmation in taking the oath if the policy requires candidates to violate or renounce a basic tenet of their religion?” Boswell asked. Boswell offered two hypothetical examples: a monk who had taken a vow of silence and a person who is mute. Would a judge be affording a monk the “greatest possible freedom” by forcing him to betray his vow? And what if a person is physically incapable of saying the oath and cannot be heard taking it? As the Citizenship Act is a law passed by Parliament and the policy manual is a directive from a cabinet minister, the act naturally trumps the policy manual, Boswell reasoned. Source: CBC News

he might help out the mayors, who have largely drawn together to campaign for a Yes vote, making their case in news conferences, telephone town halls and interviews. This week, more than 1.5 million ballots have been mailed to voters across the Lower Mainland. The deadline for returning them to Elections BC by mail or at agency offices is the end of May. The mayors and a wideranging Yes coalition argue the tax is key to generating funds for $7.5-billion in projects to clear congestion and facilitate movement of current and future residents. The referendum has come about because Premier Christy Clark, facing an uphill battle for re-election in the 2013 provincial election, promised voters they would have a say on spending options for new transit if her Liberals were re-elected. The Liberals won the election. George Heyman, the TransLink critic for the provincial NDP, said Tuesday that Mr. Stone’s comments helped reinforce the view that while the minister and Ms. Clark publicly say they hope for a Yes vote, their political behaviour suggests otherwise. Last month, TransLink demoted its CEO to an adviser’s post and appointed an interim leader to run the organization while a search was launched for a permanent CEO – a move cheered by the mayors, who have said that reform was necessary. The mayors, attentive to public skepticism about getting value for the new tax, have also recruited billionaire Jim Pattison to lead a public-accountability committee that would police spending if the tax is approved. The province basically

holds the reins over TransLink. In 2007, the province stripped the mayors of their ability to control the agency and gave that power to an appointed board. Mr. Stone – unveiling a $2.5-billion transportation plan called B.C. on the Move during a speech to the Vancouver Board of Trade on Tuesday – said he and Ms. Clark are hoping for a Yes vote. In remarks to reporters later, he added that he has delivered speeches making the case for Yes, but he said he is leaving the heavy lifting to the mayors and their allies in the Yes coalition. Mr. Stone dismissed polls suggesting the Yes side is heading for defeat, recalling the Liberals came from behind to win another term in 2013 despite negative polls. “Has it been that long since the lessons we learned in the last provincial campaign?” he asked rhetorically. “It’s far too premature to suggest that one side has this in the bag over the other.” Also Tuesday, the minister restated a provincial government commitment to fund one-third of the cost of new rapid-transit projects and the Pattullo Bridge as long as they be accommodated within the province’s fiscal plan and are supported by a business case. The province and mayors are hoping for another third from the federal government and other funds would come from local sources. Mr. Stone said there are only three options ahead: the tax at the centre of the plebiscite, “alternate sources of funding” or the status quo. “It’s very much in the best interest of most people who live in this region to support a Yes vote,” he said. F A I T H Translation of Sahih Muslim, Book : Number 3233: Abdullah (b. Mas’ud) (Allah be pleased with him) reported that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said to us: 0 young men, those among you who can support a wife should marry, for it restrains eyes (from casting evil glances) and preserves one from immorality; but he who cannot afford It should observe fast for it is a means of controlling the sexual desire.

Prayers: A special connection with Allah By:Shahul Hameed Islam signifies the subjection of all activities in all walks of life to the Law of God Almighty, and leaving nothing to the whims and fancies of anyone else. God has commanded the believers to declare: “Truly, my prayer, my service of sacrifice, my life, and my death, are (all) for Allah (God), the Cherisher of the Worlds.” (Qur’an, 6:162) This means that a Muslim is a person who has submitted his or her whole self and whole life to God, so that the first duty of a Muslim is to lead a life of obedience to God alone. And the above quoted commandment also implies that it is wrong to consider our lives to consist of watertight compartments, saying that: “This is the part of my life within the bounds of religion where I am bound to obey God, and these are the secular areas of life where God’s laws are irrelevant.”The twin sources of Islam — the Qur’an and the Sunnah — teach that when God Almighty is accepted as the Creator, Sustainer, and Lawgiver, we cannot go after “other gods.” Islam is a complete way of life that asks its followers to mold their entire lives in accordance with its principles laid down in the Qur’an and the Sunnah. This in fact is not an unrealistic idea; it only means a change of perspective or approach.Of course, such a change is bound to have its impact on our life, both internal and external; but for those who wish to lead a good life here, Islam is the way. The important point to note here is that Islam does not impose on its adherents rituals for the sake of rituals, as they are likely to be performed mechanically without understanding their meaning in life. Allah Almighty says in the Qur’an: “It is not righteousness that you turn your faces toward East or West; but it is righteousness to believe in Allah and the Last Day, and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for or-

phans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast in prayer, and give zakah (regular charity); to fulfill the contracts which you have made; and to be firm and patient in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the God-fearing.” (Qur’an, 2:177) This all-inclusive approach to worship encourages people to purify and spiritualize their whole lives. But this is not to disparage ritualistic worship. In fact, rituals, if performed with a full understanding of their inner significance, equip the worshippers with a moral and spiritual power that help them to carry out their daily activities in the various spheres of life informed by the guidance of God. Thus in Islam, the term “worship” (in Arabic, ibadah) does not signify merely the “pillars of Islam” such as prayer, fasting, charity or pilgrimage. It includes all the activities of a believer; in fact, it stands for everything a Muslim believes, says, or does. When believers perform all the activities of their lives seeking the pleasure of God, then all their deeds become worship. Naturally, this also includes the rituals they perform, such as prayer. We can see that the worship of God as visualized in Islam — whether it is ritual or non-ritual — prevents evil thoughts and actions, thereby purifying life. Indeed, sincere Islamic worship trains the individual to lead a life of com-

plete obedience and submission to God. Of all the forms of ritual worship in Islam, prayer (in Arabic, salah) is unique. It is typical of Islam and is entirely different from the usual kind of prayer familiar in other religions. The prostration in prayer symbolizes the worshipper’s total and unconditional submission to God Almighty. Of course certain supplications are recited in prayer, following the Prophetic teaching. But the objective of prayer is not this worldly life. Muslims can pray to God for the solution of the immediate problems they confront any time, in any language. But they are not authorized to change the language of the utterances in prayer, nor can they change its form or content. Muslims have to strictly adhere to its form as taught by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Muslims believe that God has made prayer compulsory for all His prophets as well as their followers, as it is evident from the Qur’an. To Moses, God said: “Verily I am Allah: There is no god but Me: so worship Me only and establish regular prayer for My remembrance.” (Qur’an, 20:13-4) The important aspect of a believer’s faith is his or her relationship with God; and nowhere is this relationship exemplified as in prayer. Prayer lifts a person spiritually toward his or her Creator and if it is done with devotion and sincerity, his or

her heart will be filled with the love of God and the hope of Paradise. Praying five times a day helps Muslims to constantly remember God and seek His forgiveness and pleasure. Besides, it offers an occasion for repentance, so that they earnestly ask Allah for forgiveness of the sins they committed. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Imagine a stream outside a person’s door and imagine that he bathes in it five times a day; do you think he would have any dirt on him?” The people said, “Not at all.” The Prophet then said, “The five daily prayers are like that: Allah wipes away the sins by them.” (Al-Bukhari, 528) The most important aspect of a person’s relationship with God is his or her strong faith and sincerity. This relationship with God is clearly borne out and strengthened by prayer. If the prayer is performed with true devotion to God and with a sincere heart, it will have a lasting effect on the person. Allah says in the Qur’an: “Establish regular prayer: for prayer restrains from shameful and evil deeds; and remembrance of Allah is the greatest (thing in life) without doubt. And Allah knows the (deeds) that you did.” (Qur’an, 29:45) A person’s God-consciousness awakened by prayer strengthens him or her against temptations arising from the weakness of the flesh. Again God says in the Qur’an: “Truly man was created very impatient; fretful, when evil touches him; and niggardly, when good reaches him; not so those devoted to prayer and those who remain steadfast to their prayer.” (Qur’an, 70:19-23) Thus it is prayer that enables believers to keep in constant touch with their Creator and to keep steady in the face of the temptations and the pressures life. — Courtesy: onislam.net

8 S P E C I A L Bypassing rules: Political appointments infuriate Foreign Office Jumada Al Awwal 29, 1436 March 20, 2015

By Zahid Gishkor In what appears to be a sign of growing nepotism in Pakistan’s Foreign Service, the government is planning to hand a key post in Canada to a non-career diplomat. The revelation comes exactly two weeks after Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States skillfully manoeuvred his way into getting a two-year extension. Diplomats familiar with the development revealed that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has finalised the name of Dr Yousaf Junaid for a key diplomatic assignment in Pakistan’s High Commission in Canada without properly observing Foreign Service rules. Dr Junaid, an officer from the Commerce and Trade Group, is already serving as the consul general in Istanbul since 2010. “Dr Junaid can replace Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Canada Gul Akbar Zaib,” a senior diplomat told The Express Tribune on Saturday. Akbar Zaib, who has been in the Foreign Service since 1979, has already completed his service, explained the diplomat who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “The decision to appoint Dr Junaid smacks of nepotism,” said former ambassador B A Malik. “Foreign Service rules clearly state that a person who serves in a foreign mission for at least three years is supposed to resume duties in his or her parent department for at least two years first before being eligible to join another foreign mission,” he explained. “Ottawa is an important diplomatic post. We usually posted only officers of BPS 22 from the Foreign Service over there,” Malik said. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should have chosen senior diplomats for key stations as there is no dearth of career

diplomats in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he added. Diplomats that The Express Tribune spoke to on this matter revealed that many senior diplomats in the foreign ministry are unhappy with the government’s recent decisions on foreign postings. “We have planned to challenge the recent postings and extensions given to diplomats,” another senior diplomat said on condition of anonymity. “We diplomats believe that the norms of good governance enshrined in Articles 2A, 4, 25 and 27, and the principles of policy outlined in articles 29, 37 and 38 of the Constitution have been violated. The government has ignored us by making recent postings in London and New York, and by giving an extension to the ambassador in Washington DC who recently reached the age of superannuation. Five senior most diplomats, who include the current foreign secretary, were the major contenders for these posts but they were ignored,” the diplomat said. Asked about this development, Foreign Office spokesperson Tasneem Aslam said: “I don’t have any such information readily available. I will have to check.” Pakistan Press Attaché Abdul Akbar was also unaware of Dr Junaid’s posting in Canada. He confirmed, however, that Dr Junaid was continuing his tenure in Istanbul and overseeing business matters for Pakistan there. Many information officers have already gone to court against postings of officials aboard accused of being appointed based on nepotism,

senior foreign ministry officials said. The superior judiciary has also laid down very clearly the defined limits on the exercise of discretion by public functionaries including the prime minister, they added. A senior diplomat in the Foreign Office recalled that the postings of non-career diplomats, especially ones without any training in diplomacy, are a cause of considerable consternation among Foreign Service officers. Senior diplomat Adnan Randhawa, who was posted in China, has already resigned because of a discriminatory attitude against him and what he saw as flawed foreign policy decisions of the government, he said. Vancouver Muslims Unite to Tackle Addictions and Mental Health within the Community

On March 7th, the Muslim Food Bank’s ASPIRE program held its first Symposium on addictions and mental health issues within the Muslim community and introduced the new HOPE program which seeks to address these issues specifically among Muslim youth. The Muslim Food Bank Society (“MFB”) is a non-profit registered charity which aims to help those in need and provide a path - through these programs - for the Muslim community to play a substantial role in providing assistance to those who seek it. The Symposium, held at Surrey Central Library, was well attended and enthusiastically received by all attendees including Surrey-Green Timbers NDP MLA Sue Hammell and Newton-North Delta MP Jinny Sims. Ms Hammell applauded the efforts put forward by the MFB, and speaking to the participants, said “this program is just what any community needs”. Similarly, Ms Sims lent her support to the program and its focus on emphasizing the importance of building collaborations and partnerships, “mental illness is a growing disease….hitting all communities. We are all neighbors, let’s work together”. The panel of speakers comprised of MFB executives Mr Azim Dahya and Mr Asad Asadullah, UBC Assistant Professor and psychiatrist, Dr Sheik Hosenbocus, Fraser Health social worker Ms Sana Siddiqui and SFU

doctoral candidate Ehsan Jozaghi. The speakers discussed various factors contributing to the challenges faced by Canadian Muslims, such as Islamophobia, generational conflicts, and cross-cultural communication and identity. The importance of building and restoring trust, and finding issues that are common across cultures were highlighted as a means of increasing access and decreasing feelings of isolation and other barriers to health care. Speakers touched upon community transformation using a holistic, faithbased approach. Mr Dahya signified HOPE’s role as “a light” that aimed to bring “progressive change to the community” by providing a confidential space for its clients, connecting them with relevant resources, and supporting them through their path to recovery. Dr Hosenbocus also discussed how the process of rehabilitation falls entirely within the framework of Islamic val-

ues and the importance of understanding mental health as a branch of physical well-being. Overall, the Symposium was an excellent opportunity for members of the health-

care and Muslim communities to engage in open discussion, share perspectives and experiences, and collectively offer solutions and future directions for growth.

11 T A X S P E C I A L We all like to be noticed. Jumada Al Awwal 29, 1436 March 20, 2015

But there are times when it’s best not to stand out from the crowd. One of those times is during tax-filing season. Every year, however, some Canadians seem determined to attract the scrutiny of the Canada Revenue Agency and its army of auditors. And every year, the CRA’s spotlights are focused on people who have performed the income tax equivalent of waving a red flag in front of a bull. These taxpayers have painted metaphorical targets on their foreheads, stuck “audit me” signs to their backs and stood in front of the CRA’s radar dishes. They have, in short, dared the tax department to come calling. So, what are some of those attention-getting triggers?

Here are 10:

1.Ignoring the CRA’s requests for further information. So, the tax department has asked you to submit a receipt for that big moving or child-care expense you’ve claimed. Ignore them, you think. They’ll go away. Well, no, they won’t. “If the taxpayer does not respond on a timely basis or is unable to provide adequate support for a claim, the CRA will issue a reassessment, perhaps denying a claim completely or adjusting an income or expense figure based on the information on file,” says Ernst & Young. Failure to respond to legitimate requests for information can also flag your returns for audits in future years. 2.Large or unusual changes in deductions or credits. The CRA’s computers like consistency. “Major changes in income or expenses or tax deductions from one year to the next will raise suspicion,” warns Barrett Tax Law, “so do try to be consistent in your declarations.” 3.Claiming hefty home-office deductions. Trying to write off half of the costs of running your six-room house for your homebased business just invites CRA scrutiny. “To be able to exercise this deduction, you must use the space exclusively and regularly as your principal place of business,” says accountant Marvin Khoshkhassal of Vancouver-based MK & Associates. “That makes it difficult to successfully claim a guest bedroom or rec room as a home office, even if you also use the space to do your work.” 4.Claiming 100 per cent business use of a vehicle. Claiming you don’t ever use your company car for personal use is a real red flag for CRA auditors since even driving from home to the workplace is considered personal use. PricewaterhouseCoopers points out that the CRA wants to ensure that “employees do not receive personal benefits tax-free, when salary, bonus and other forms of compensation would give rise to income tax.” So, detailed record-keeping is essential when using an employer-supplied vehicle. 5.Not reporting income from a T-slip. The CRA’s system of matching the T-slip you’re sent with the one sent to the CRA by the employer or financial institution is better than ever. If there’s a mismatch, the computers will catch it, and your return will be reassessed. A penalty can be imposed for not reporting the income. Do that twice in a four-year period, and the penalties double. 6.Reporting an income much lower than other residents in the same area. Reporting a $30,000 income in a neighbourhood of multi-millionaires just invites tax inquiries. “This suggests that an individual may have unreported income,” say the tax lawyers at Gowlings in an advisory. “Unreasonably, low reported income is not only an audit trigger but may cause the CRA to initiate a so-called ‘net worth’ or arbitrary assessment, whereby various tools are deployed by the CRA to impute income to the taxpayer.”

7.Claiming an aggressive tax shelter. Tax shelters, which are designed to shelter income from tax that would otherwise be paid, aren’t nearly as prevalent as they once were. And those that are still, in effect, face strict rules. “Taxpayers are not allowed to engage in aggressive tax planning arrangements deliberately designed to circumvent the object and spirit of tax laws,” warns the CRA. So, RRSPs are fine. Gifting tax shelter arrangements, where taxpayers are given donation receipts that are for much higher amounts than the actual amount they donated, are not. Audits of these arrangements are guaranteed. 8.Recurring losses from a rental property. You bought a rental property a few years ago, and it’s still cash-flow negative. So, you’re reporting a loss...again...which you plan to deduct against other income. “The CRA is quite aggressive in targeting rental loss deductions,” warns KPMG. So, you need to keep careful records that show you did your due diligence when buying the property and deciding on what rent to charge — and don’t rent to a relative at a below-market price. The CRA knows that rental businesses, like all businesses, can take several years to turn a profit. But for losses to be allowed, there must be a reasonable expectation of profit down the line. 9.Being self-employed. Having their own business can give some entrepreneurs the urge to over-report expenses and under-report revenues, and no one knows that better than the CRA. Working in an industry where cash frequently changes hands, like restaurants, can also up the odds of being given a fiscal cavity search. The tax department “has tools to investigate and gather information about your industry,” says Barrett Tax Law. “If your numbers don’t fit the typical profile, then chances are greater that you will be audited.” The Canadian Federation of Independent Business echoes that warning in its publication, What to do when the tax auditor arrives. It says small businesses are usually chosen for audit for a specific reason. “Perhaps your travel and promotion expenses look high or your profit markup looks low.” 10.Having a large amount in a TFSA. Recent media reports say the CRA has been targeting holders of very large tax-free savings accounts (TFSAs) — those in the hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. The issue appears to be that some TFSA holders have been successful by being active traders within their TFSA, perhaps trading dozens of times a day. That appears to be a problem in the eyes of the CRA because taxpayers aren’t supposed to use their TFSAs to carry on a business — in this case, a trading business. “It seems clear that the CRA is intent on challenging those who have enjoyed significant growth within their TFSA,” warns tax law firm Thorsteinssons LLP. The tax department has reportedly been saying the gains in these cases should all be taxed. Look for this issue to head to court soon. Most of the CRA’s 144,013 audits and/or examinations in the last fiscal year didn’t lead to criminal charges. But the tax scrutiny can still be costly and uncomfortable. The good news is that there are steps you can take to minimize the fallout if you’ve done something wrong. Voluntary disclosure No. of voluntary disclosures made to the CRA in 2013-14: 14,624 Amount of previously unreported income disclosed: $813 million Source: CRA_______________________ The CRA’s voluntary disclosures program allows taxpayers to ‘fess up about something on their current or past tax returns that may not pass the smell test. Doing this can prevent additional penalties from being assessed. But for the disclosure to be accepted, you must contact the CRA before it contacts you. The CRA won’t be in a forgiving mood if it’s already on your doorstep

The ISIL franchise

By Imran Khan, Right now intense negotiations are going on at the UN Security Council regarding Libya and the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). The Libyans want an arms embargo lifted so they can secure the weaponry needed to fight the group, which has brutally murdered Egypt’s Coptic Christians working in Libya and travels with impunity in Libyan territory in large convoys. In Nigeria, Boko Haram have managed to delay elections and have increasingly publicly come closer to ISIL, developing a media campaign that’s closer to ISIL’s in execution, and referring to themselves as the Islamic State in West Africa. In Egypt, the group Ansar al-Beit al-Maqdis has also changed its name, going now by the moniker ‘Sinai Province’ and has pledged allegiance to ISIL. In Pakistan some factions of the Pakistani Taliban have declared they are backing ISIL and share its goals. On the surface, ISIL is developing into a global outfit with a reach far beyond its selfdeclared and internationally unrecognised borders in Iraq and Syria. Quite simply, ISIL is franchising out its brand to other groups and becoming the pre-eminent armed group. In that sense it’s aping successful business models and it’s a smart move. The only difference is that in the business world a franchise agreement comes with a contract. For ISIL it comes in the form of a pledge of allegiance or a show of support. ISIL’s ‘corporate structure’ Amanda Rogers is an academic who has lectured extensively on ISIL’s rise as a corporate structure. “ISIL acts like a corporation because it

E A S T

works, it adopts corporate logic, as it is increasingly the manner in which effective governance is conducted and adopts branding. The ‘black flag’ makes an impact for both audiences terrified of an imminent globalkhilafa, as well as those eager for such a creation. Consumers will identify with a recognisable brand and that helps with expansion,” she said. What separated ISIL from other rebel groups was its organisational skills. ISIL operated with a clear, top-down management structure. Using money initially from Saudi sheikhs, it consolidated territory through aggressive expansion. Once again the parallels can be drawn between business and Jihad. Imagine a company in tech industry that sells software en masse. To keep market dominance it’s often cheaper to take over smaller competing companies and shut them down or fold them into your existing business than it is to compete with them. That’s what ISIL do. They would arrive at the outskirts of a town, and send in an emissary who would give the towns leaders a stark choice. Join us or die. Sometimes whole towns would fall in Syria without ISIL firing a shot, other times the takeover would be bloody. Switching to organised crime In June ISIL went further, pushing into Iraq using the same tactic. They met little resistance. The reputation had spread; the aggressive takeover doctrine worked. Like all businesses, ISIL needs cash and cashflow management to keep going. In ISIL’s case they taxed the territories they took, took over running of civil services and began to sell oil and other high-value goods including Syrian antiquities. ‎

Sajad Jiyad is a director of research for the Iraqi Institute of Economic Reform. He said the financial side of ISIL will be difficult to defeat unless the group is tackled as a whole. “The military effort, if it succeeds, will push ISIL underground, if the financing and ideology are not tackled. This has happened before and with other groups. So the military effort by itself can be successful without totally effective at destroying ISIL.” In that case ISIL can switch from ‎corporate to an organised crime entity and live to fight another day. However, the group isn’t thinking about defeat. Like all good business models, ISIL is diversifying. Its media division pumps out videos and there’s a glossy magazine called Al Dabiq. All share a synergy, a common theme. ISIL’s ‘target market’ Another comparison of the way ISIL operates as a corporation is competition. Much like the much-publicised rivalry between Coca Cola and Pepsi, ISIL also has a major rival: al-Qaeda. ‎The target market for ISIL is the same as the soft drinks giants. Consumers. In ISIL’s case, it’s all about getting sympathy for its actions and recruits to its cause. That’s why ISIL created the state, and it is why they choose brutal, headline-grabbing methods of murder. The more publicity, the more ‘consumers’ of its product and the more it can further franchise its brand and the more successful it becomes against its rival al-Qaeda. ISIL even has a core target market that it

pitches to. Sunni Muslims, who fear a Iranian Shia-dominated region that’ll subjugate the Sunni’ further. Every ISIL move, every message, everything it stands for is singular. In corporate terms, ISIL is associated with one key attribute. Representing Sunni anger, much the same way Coca Cola is about sharing a moment with friends. That’s a powerful advertising message. But ISIL’s ambitions go way beyond just operating as a corporation. ‎The corporate structure is a means to an end. The end is a legitimate state recognised by the world. It’s unknown whether any of the leaders ‎studied business but regardless of whether they have or not, the rules have been applied. With a variety of groups globally now joining or openly supporting the group, ISIL have cemented the one thing all business want. A valued brand that can be transferred across terroritory. Whether they can make the jump from corporation to state is unlikely, but without understanding how they operate it’s unlikely they’ll be defeated.

Vancouver Joins Growing Opposition to Bill C-51

A diverse and passionate crowd of over 2000 people gathered for a rally on the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery on Saturday, March 15 to protest Bill C-51, which was followed by a march throughout many downtown locations while distributing information and gathering petition signatures against Bill C-51. The protest was part of a Canada-wide Day of Action which saw 70 coordinated actions take place from coast to coast to protest the proposed bill. If passed, Bill C-51 would see the government of Canada grant itself unprecedented powers to spy on, disrupt and detain anyone falling under the purposefully vague and undefined accusation of “supporting terrorism.

Named the “Anti-Terrorism 2015 Bill by the Conservative government, it has now become widely known as the “Secret Police Bill. Many point out the bill is a continuation of the government of Canada’s campaign of using Islamaphobia to justify its continued effort to limit and undermine such basic civil liberties as freedom of speech and freedom of assembly. This is especially con-

cerning in a time when Canada is increasingly involved in conversational wars and occupations, especially in the Middle East. Rally speaker Josh Paterson, Executive Director of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, pointed out that Bill C-51, “will dramatically expand the powers of Canada’s national security agencies and violate the rights of Canadians without making us demonstrably any safer.â€? The public outcry against Bill C-51 has been growing steadily as people learn of its real consequences. A coalition of 41 major human rights organizations from across Canada, including Amnesty International Canada, the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, the Canadian Muslim Lawyers Association, the International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group, La Ligue des Droits et LibertĂŠs and the National Council of Canadian Muslims issued a joint press release denouncing it. “Bill C-51 should be of concern to all Canadians as it has the potential to impact on all of our rights given its stunningly far-reaching definitions of what constitutes a threat to Canada’s security. As we have learned from past and recent experiences, without robust oversight, review and redress mechanisms security agencies have abused the powers ceded to them. Given the disproportionate impact of anti-terrorism

legislation in recent years on Canadian Muslims, these new proposals are of particular interest in our community, said Ihsaan Gardee, Executive Director, National Council of Canadian Muslims The newest national opinion poll shows an important shift of public opinion against Bill C-51. Among people aware of the controversial bill, 50% now disapprove of it. Just 38% now approve. This is down from 82% support when the bill was introduced in February. 61% of respondents were also opposed to provisions in Bill C-51 that would allow security services to infiltrate and track environmentalist groups, First Nations and oil pipeline protesters. The March 15 National Day of Action was another step forward for the growing campaign against Bill C-51. Well attended protest pickets have been held every Monday for the past month at Broadway Skytrain station in Vancouver. Organized by the

Working Group to Stop Bill C-51, the pickets are ongoing with the next on Monday, March 23rd at 4pm at the Lougheed Skytrain Station in Burnaby. All concerned community members are invited to attend, and can also like the Working Group to Stop Bill C-51 page on facebook and follow on twitter @StopBillC51 By Thomas Davies, Editorial Board member of Fire This Time Newspaper @thomasdavies59

18 WOMEN PCWS Discusses Youth & Parents Culture Clash Jumada Al Awwal 29, 1436 March 20, 2015

On March 8, the Pakistani Canadian Women’s Society’s (PCWS) arranged an educational event at Royal King Banquet Hall on Women’s Day. The topic of the event was “Youth, Parents and Culture Clash”. This interactive panel discussion was in multiple languages in which people participated eagerly. The purpose of the discussion was to explore ways to improve communication between youth and their parents. There are many challenges in the Canadian society for immigrants and one of them is conflict between parents and their children. There are issues of cultural norms, freedom, concept of space and privacy, choice of friends, life partner choices and academic expectations. Immigrants parents insist about their sacrifices including odd jobs to settle down in Canada and expect that their children will realize and show regards in their behaviour. The youth and children on the other hand feel that they are culturally torn. They have to struggle to be traditional at home and western at school and offices. These competing requirements are very stressful and lead to children leading double lives full of stress and lies. Ms Shanaz Rehman, one of the chief organiser was the MC of the event who welcomed the guests and amused them

with a beautiful poem. Ms. Saima Naz and Mr. Raza Mirani co-ordinated the youth and parents interactive discussions. Both groups (parents and youth) actively discussed generational conflicts including languages, dresses, cross-cultural communication and identity, youth mixed parties , dating and their result and Muslim Marriages into other religions. Various current challenges facing by Canadian Muslims, such as Islamophobia, Cybercrimes (any crime that involves a computer and a network), Drugs addiction in youth, Youth Careers were also discussed. Ms. Zanbka Mailk and few other parents were active participants and raised some important issues. It was realized that to reduce the conflicts between youth and their parents, discussions should be held between two parties very often. Mr. Naseer Pirzada (as Media Partner from Miracle) raised two very common youth and parents issues , and promised that Miracle Media will try to do such type of forums in future under the Miracle’s banner to reduce the cultural clash among youth and parents. At the end Dr. Babra Rana thanked all the panel and guests and assured that PCWS will continue to help to reduce the gap between youth and parents .

The Importance of Tipping Your Servers

You’re out to dinner and the bill comes… For many of us, how much we generally tip is based on how we saw our parents tip when we were taken out on family dinners. Once we started understanding the concept of money, we became increasingly conscious of how our mothers and fathers, or people we depended upon spent it. Despite the truth in the above, when it comes to tipping, most people justify how much or how little they tip, based on their perception of the quality of service provided. However, this is rarely the real case. Most of us have a general guideline, whether it’s 10%, 15%, or 20% and rarely budge—even if the service is impeccable. But when we feel that service is bad, we find it very easy to tip considerably less. Did you know that servers make less than minimum wage? That’s right—when you hear on the news that “minimum wage has gone up to $10.25/hour as of June 2014 in BC.”, that’s in reference to the average worker. For servers and others the minimum wage is $8.90/hour and somewhere pay less than that. What’s more—your server has to “tip-out” a certain percentage of their sales to the res-

11:30am-3:30pm

taurant. What does this mean? This means, that if, on a ridiculously busy Saturday, your server sells a total of $1000.00 throughout the course of the night, and the restaurant he or she works at, requires that they tip-out 5% of their sales, your server has to give $50.00 back to the house, REGARDLESS of how much or how little you, and all their other tables tipped them. If your bill is $100.00, and you tip nothing because, according to that etiquette expert, that’s perfectly fine, your server actually has to pay five dollars, out of his or her own pocket, to serve you. Imagine you, having to pay $5.00 out of your own pocket, for every client you helped in your job, while making less per hour than most. Tragic. I know. Another thing to keep in mind is that by in large, food taking a long time to get to your table, or people sitting near you being obnoxious, is not your server’s fault, and so, should not affect their tip. If, on the other hand, your server is playing with their iPhone when your arm has lost all feeling because of how long it’s been raised, or they completely forgot to punch in your order, it’s perfectly fine to tip less—not nothing— less. At the ABSOLUTE least, we feel that the minimum tip, even for below-averageservice, is 10%. Now if they are actually rude, that’s a different story. Generally, when goes out to eat, it’s a guaranteed 15% for anywhere from slightlybelow-average-service to average-service, and 20% or more for above-average-service to good-heavens-I-want-to-marry-my-server. www.DayForTwo.com

How to Create a True Happiness! Fantastic Relationship,

By Clement McGrath Relationships are the core of Life, but they can be a challenge. The real challenge is the way you deal with the differences that start to show up. They always show up because you have two people with different communication styles, different ways of resolving issues, different needs and expectations, and different fears. And all of these will have arisen from their earlier conditioning and relationship experiences. There is no such thing as a new relationship, because we bring all our previous history into it. So a gap emerges between your assumptions and expectations, and what you live with every day. The temptation is to try and force the reality to conform to the expectation or the image you carry of how it “should” be. This forcing is one of the major causes of stress and conflict, and technical solutions will do nothing to truly resolve it. The key to permanent change is to become conscious of the beliefs and expectations you bring into your relationships, your automatic patterns, your emotions, and especially your levels of self love and self worth. Transforming your relationships begins with transforming yourself. At least 80% of communication is unconscious and nonverbal and is the energy you radiate. When you grow and transform yourself, and change your patterns, you dramatically change that 80%, which will change everything in the relationship. If you feel caught in a difficult relationship then rest assured you can achieve all of the following, and more 1.Understand why you get caught in the same stuff over and over. 2.Grow your levels of self love and self worth. 3.Learn to be truly yourself, and to honour that. 4.Recognise the higher potential of your relationships. 5.Communicate clearly and powerfully, yet lovingly. 6.Get your needs met without arguing and fighting. 7.Sustain passion and delight through the whole relationship. 8.Deal with emotions harmoniously and effectively. 9.Keep your heart open and respond with greater love.. 10.Experience the power of forgiveness and reconciliation. Relationships can sizzle and sparkle. There will probably always be challenges in relationships but by becoming conscious and growing as a person then you give yourself the best guarantee that those challenges will become an invitation to grow, expand and be fulfilled rather than degenerating into a

battleground. The highest potential of relationships is to enable us to grow in love and thereby realise our full potential. We cannot change anything we are not aware of, so here are a couple of exercises to help bring that awareness. 1. Take a few moments to think about your parents’ relationship. 2. How would you describe it in general terms? 3. Was it harmonious, or was there tension and fighting in the house? 4. What was the energy between them like, and what impression did it make on you? 5. Try to remember any particular words you heard that showed how they felt. 6. Now identify three things you learned about relationships from your mother. 7. Identify three things you learned about relationships from your father. (Please note that if one parent was missing in your life that still taught you something.) 8. Identify three ways you play out the same patterns or beliefs in your relationship. 9. What is one thing you could commit to for changing these patterns? Some examples of what you learned could be: “Men / women always get what they want in relationships.”“You always have to expect conflict in relationships.”“It’s hard to get your needs met in relationships.” “You get what you want by shouting and being angry.”“It’s not safe to express my feelings in a relationship.”These may read like negative examples but it is beliefs like these that cause the difficulty. The awareness can be uncomfortable but it is far better to see it and take charge, than have it sabotage you and keep you stuck. The next exercise is best done with someone who will support you with this awareness and growth. The other person sits opposite you and says two words, and you respond with the first thought that comes to mind. Don’t think about it or censor it. Say the very first thing that comes to you. The other person says, “thank you,” and then repeats the two words. Every time you give a different answer. You keep doing this until nothing more comes to you. The two words are: “relationships are.......” When you are finished think about your answers and identify the one, or more, that seems most significant. This represents your predominant automatic view of relationships. Now again identify how this plays out in your relationship, and think of one thing you could do to start changing that. It could be a change in the way you communicate, your attitude towards your partner, a change in your demands on them, or whatever is significant for you.

By:Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor “Life is never made unbearable by circumstances, but only by lack of meaning and purpose” For most people, feeling happy and finding life meaningful are both important and related goals. But do happiness and meaning always go together? Recent research suggests that while happiness and a sense of meaning often overlap, they also diverge in important and surprising ways. As one might expect, people’s happiness levels were positively correlated with whether they saw their lives as meaningful. However, the two measures were not identical – suggesting that what makes us happy may not always bring more meaning, and vice versa. To probe for differences between the two, the researchers examined the survey items that asked detailed questions about people’s feelings and moods, their relationships with others, and their day-to-day activities. Feeling happy was strongly correlated with seeing life as easy, pleasant, and free from difficult or troubling events. Happiness was also correlated with being in good health and generally feeling well most of the time. However, none of these things were correlated with a greater sense of meaning. Feeling good most of the time might help us feel happier, but it doesn’t necessarily bring a sense of purpose to our lives. Interestingly, their findings suggest that money, contrary to popular sayings, can indeed buy happiness. Having enough money to buy what one needs in life, as well as what one desires, were also positively correlated with greater levels of happiness. However, having enough money seemed to make little difference in life’s sense of meaning. People from wealthy countries tend to be happier, however, they don’t see their lives as more meaningful. While people from low income countries tend to see their lives as more meaningful. Although the reasons are not totally clear, this

might be related to greater religious belief, having more children, and stronger social ties among those living in poorer countries. Perhaps instead of saying that “money doesn’t buy happiness,” we ought to say instead that “money doesn’t buy meaning.” Not too surprisingly, our relationships with other people are related to both how happy we are as well as how meaningful we see our lives. Feeling more connected to others improved both happiness and meaning. However, the role we adopt in our relationships makes an important difference. In addition, spending more time with friends was related to greater happiness but not more meaning. In contrast, spending more time with people one loves was correlated with greater meaning but not with more happiness. When it comes to thinking about how to be happier, many of us fantasize about taking more vacations or finding ways to avoid tasks. However, some tasks which don’t make us happy can, over time, add up to a meaningful life. Even routine activities - talking on the phone, cooking, cleaning, housework, meditating, emailing, praying, reading book and balancing finances - appeared to bring more meaning to people’s lives, but not happiness in the moment. To conclusion happiness can be attained in things in things which we already have but don’t realize the true meaning of this happiness unless we might be at the edge of losing it, value and cherish each moment of those precious moments! shabnam@skcounselling.ca

6 New Scientific Inventions, Saving Lives in the Next Few Years

By Dixie Somers Technology continues to advance at a torrid pace in the 21st century. With the enhanced knowledge and available resources we now have, scientists have been working on new applications for cutting-edge inventions that will soon be saving lives. Here is a compilation of six new inventions that will be making a major impact on longevity in the next few years: WiThings Blood Pressure Monitor This easily portable blood pressure monitor will revolutionize consumers’ awareness of their own physical well-being, and easily link them with physicians when a potential problem arises. The monitor takes and records blood pressure, and allows a patient’s results to be e-mailed, tracked, sorted and graphed so that physicians are up-to-speed on their patient’s health, without needing an appointment. This makes it easy for doctors to prescribe changes in a patient’s lifestyle, or additional medicine when blood pressure gets into a dangerous area. iMicroscope On the surface, a new prototype that turns an iPhone camera into a medical-quality microscope may not seem all that revolutionary. But it is the affordability and accessibility that make this invention an impactful one. The prototype currently costs under $40, and once in production the price will

drop even further. The potential uses for an iMicroscope range from counting and classifying blood cells, to diagnosing an array of diseases. The beauty of iMicroscope is that it can be afforded in rural areas and developing countries. According to professionals at Microscope.com , physicians in these poorer areas will now be able to recognize and diagnose diseases that were previously untreatable. Pathfinder This new technology revolutionizes operating procedures. Previously, surgeons did not have a true sense of a patient’s internal or- gans until after surgery had begun, but that all changes with Pathfinder. It acts as a sort of human GPS, allowing doctors to map out a 3D image of the patient’s organs through use of CT scans. Pathfinder will raise the rate of successful operations, as any potential complications are discovered in advance, allow-

ing surgeons to plan accordingly. AliveCor iPhone ECG Physicians use an electrocardiogram (ECG) to measure the muscular activity of the heart, and determine if a patient is having a heart attack. Its use in emergency situations is invaluable, and now that technology is being transferred into a d o c t o r ’s coat pocket . AliveCor has produced an iPhone case that comes with two metal electrodes on the outside. The bumps are placed on a patient’s chest, and w i l l analyze, transmit, and store an ECG reading so that physicians may immediately diagnosis the patient. The practicality of the technology has already been demonstrated, as one of the physicians testing it determined that a passenger on his same flight was having a heart attack, prompting an emergency landing so the passenger could

be taken to a hospital. Lucas 2 Chest Compression System This new technology takes human error out of administering CPR. A lightweight and portable tool, the Lucas system delivers uninterrupted chest compressions that are precise in rate and depth, improving patient’s survival prospects. The tool operates independently, allowing emergency responders to focus attention on other injuries in multiple trauma emergencies. 3D Printing 3D printing is making its entrance into the medical field, and we seem to be hearing about it more with every passing day. Its recent emergence offers exciting possibilities, including the production of biomaterials such as kidney or heart tissues, drugs, and possibly even living cells. If 3D printing becomes a viable source of biomaterials, it could eliminate a great amount of risk for transplant patients, and greatly reduce waiting lists—saving countless lives. With these six new inventions in the medical field, the prospects for increased human longevity are brighter than ever. We are lucky enough to live in an age where technology and science are advancing rapidly, and solving problems we thought would never be resolved.

Cancer Prevention 7 Tips to reduce your risk By Mayo Clinic staff You’ve probably heard conflicting reports about cancer prevention. Sometimes the specific cancer-prevention tip recommended in one study or news report is advised against in another. If you’re concerned about cancer prevention, take comfort in the fact that small changes in your daily life can make a big difference. Consider seven reallife cancer prevention tips. 1. Don’t use tobacco Using any type of tobacco puts you on a collision course with cancer. Smoking has been linked to various types of cancer — including cancer of the lung, bladder, cervix and kidney — and chewing tobacco has been linked to cancer of the oral cavity and pancreas. Even if you don’t use tobacco, exposure to second hand smoke may increase your risk of lung cancer. Avoiding tobacco - or deciding to stop using it - is one of the most important health decisions you can make. It’s also an important part of cancer prevention. If you need help quitting tobacco, ask your doctor about stop-smoking products and other strategies for quitting. 2. Eat a healthy diet Although making healthy selections at the grocery store and at mealtime can’t guarantee cancer prevention, it may help reduce your risk. Consider these guidelines: • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Base your diet on fruits, vegetables and other foods from plant sources - such as whole grains and beans.

• Limit fat. Eat lighter and leaner by choosing fewer high-fat foods, particularly those from animal sources. High-fat diets tend to be higher in calories and may increase the risk of overweight or obesity - which can, in turn, increase cancer risk. 3. Maintain a healthy weight and include physical activity in your daily routine Maintaining a

healthy weight may lower the risk of various types of cancer, including cancer of the breast, prostate, lung, colon and kidney. Physical activity counts, too. In addition to helping you control your weight, physical activity on its own may lower the risk of breast cancer and colon cancer. As a general goal, include at least 30 minutes of physical activity in your daily routine — and if you can do more, even better. Try a fitness class, rediscover a favorite sport or meet a friend for daily brisk walks.

4. Protect yourself from the sun Skin cancer is one of the most common kinds of cancer — and one of the most preventable. Try these tips: • Avoid midday sun. Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are strongest. • Stay in the shade. When you’re outdoors, stay in the shade as much as possible. Sunglasse s and a broadrimmed hat help, too. • Cover exposed areas. Wear tightly woven, loosefitting clothing that covers as much of your skin as possible. Opt for bright or dark colors, which reflect more ultraviolet radiation than pastels or bleached cotton. • Don’t skimp on sunscreen. Use generous amounts of sunscreen when you’re outdoors, and reapply often. • Avoid tanning beds and sunlamps. These are just as damaging as natural sunlight. 5. Get immunized

Cancer prevention includes protection from certain viral infections. Talk to your doctor about immunization against: • Hepatitis B. Hepatitis B can increase the risk of developing liver cancer. The hepatitis B vaccine is routinely given to infants. It’s also recommended for certain high-risk adults — such as adults who are sexually active but not in a mutually monogamous relationship, men who have sex with men, and health care or public safety workers who might be exposed to infected blood or body fluids. • Human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a virus that can lead to cervical cancer. The HPV vaccine is available to both men and women age 26 or younger who didn’t have the vaccine as an adolescent. 6. Avoid risky behaviors Another effective cancer prevention tactic is to avoid risky behaviors that can lead to infections that, in turn, may increase the risk of cancer. 7. Take early detection seriously Regular self-exams and professional screening for various types of cancers — such as cancer of the skin, colon, prostate, cervix and breast — can increase your chances of discovering cancer early, when treatment is most likely to be successful. Ask your doctor about the best cancer screening schedule for you. Take cancer prevention into your own hands, starting today. The rewards will last a lifetime.

Cold or Flu?

By :Fatima Nadeem Grade 7, Surrey Stuffy nose, fever and achy feeling, you think you have the cold or is it the flu? Both the cold and flu are annoying illnesses but can you tell the difference? Today I’ll help you know the exact meaning of a cold and flu, the different symptoms, how to tell them apart and prevention. Okay let’s start with the basics, the different meaning of flu and cold. The flu is also called influenza. It’s an infection that causes a fever, chills, cough, body aches, headaches, and sometimes earaches or sinus problems. Influenza can make you feel quite ill for a few days to weeks. The flu can also result in serious health problems such as pneumonia and hospitalizations. A cold is a milder respiratory illness than the flu. Cold symptoms can make you feel bad for a few days. Being the most common infectious disease in humans, the cold is mainly caused by corona viruses or rhinoviruses. Not only are the meanings different but so are the symptoms. Flu symptoms are usually more severe than cold symptoms and come on quickly. Symptoms of flu include sore throat, fever, headache, muscle aches and soreness, congestion, and cough. Most flu symptoms gradually improve over two to five days, but it’s not uncommon to feel run down for a week or more. Cold symptoms usually begin with a sore throat, which usually goes away after a day or two. Nasal symptoms, runny nose, and congestion follow, along with a cough by the fourth and fifth days. Fever is uncommon in adults, but a slight fever is possible. Children are more likely to have a fever

Decision to retire after World Cup will not change: Misbah-ul-Haq

with a cold. Even though you know all this it is still pretty hard to tell the flu and the cold apart. Here are some easy tricks to help. Check your temperature, because a common cold rarely has symptoms of fever above 101 degrees. With flu symptoms, you will probably have a fever initially with the flu virus and you will feel miserable. Body and muscle aches are also more common with the flu. Usually, the time of year will also give you some sense of what you’re dealing with. The standard flu season runs from fall to spring of the next year. Both the cold and the flu and pretty bad and it’s important to be safe from them. The most important prevention measure for preventing colds and flu is frequent hand washing. Hand washing by rubbing the hands with warm soapy water for at least 20 seconds helps to slough germs off the skin. In addition to hand washing to prevent flu or cold symptoms, you can also get a flu vaccine to prevent seasonal influenza. Seasonal flu activity peaks between late December and early March. Antiviral medicine may also help prevent flu if you have been exposed to someone with flu symptoms. So now you know what flu which is also called influenza and cold both mean. You can also know the different symptoms like in a flu you feel al achy but in a cold you just feel tired sick. You can now separate a case of cold and the flu and you know how to prevent from getting either. By following these we can hope that everyone is safe from the flu or the cold.

Pakistan’s captain Misbah-ul-Haq has said his decision to hang up his boots from one-day international cricket after the World Cup is final and will not change. “I had decided to retire from ODIs after the World Cup after giving it much thought and it was the right time to take the decision,” he told PTI in a telephonic interview from Adelaide. “I had decided that regardless of how I perform in the World Cup and the results I will go and I have no intentions to change that decision. It is the right time to retire from ODIs,” he said. Misbah, to a question, also stated candidly that he would prefer to see the PCB give the captaincy to a young player for ODIs. “We should be looking for a younger guy as Pakistan need to move on and give someone responsibility for a long time,” he added. Misbah, 40, has said he will continue to captain the Test side after the 50-over showpiece event. He also dismissed talk about some of the Pakistani players taking their places in the side for granted thus leading to a gradual decline in batting performances. “I don’t think so, this is the best team we have these are the best performers we have that is why we are persisting with these guys. Obviously you could say that their performances not lived up to our expectation but I think these are the best in terms of skills and that is why they are in the team,” he stated. Misbah also made it clear that he had never lost hope of his team reaching the knockout stage even after losing the first two matches of the World Cup. “No that feeling never entered my mind. Simply because I am a fighter and I have never given up in life even when I was in and out of the Pakistan team. So how can I give up hope in my last tournament and in this format.” Misbah said Pakistan remained a dangerous side even against Australia in the quarterfinal on Friday in Adelaide as the will to win was very high among the players and in himself. “We know how important this tournament is for the Pakistani people and it is no secret this team has

this ability to just turnaround things from really worst to top. And that is why we did it I think our belief worked for us and I know after the first two games we needed one good game and we could turn it around and that is what happened. We just had the win and then we had four on the go,” he added. Asked if he had used the criticism back home to turn around the side’s fortunes in the mega event, Misbah said that he had never listened to criticism all his life. “Simply because I know what I can do and what I have to do with the team. I think as a professional you need to go there and be focused and try to just give your 100 per cent and obviously when you are giving your 100 per cent you just don’t think about what results are coming,” he said. To a question about him describing captaining Pakistan as being the most difficult job in the world, Misbah said with a laugh this was true. “I think everybody knows and that you could say the biggest hurdle at the moment and I would say this whether people like it or not, is the media.” “I say this because I want media to work towards the positive side, towards the good side of cricket. In building players and developing players and highlighting the things which can help develop really good players.” “I don’t think they should always go on the negative side and shouldn’t just give the people negative thoughts about our cricketers and Pakistan cricket. The media can help build image of players and Pakistan cricket. If they don’t support Pakistan cricket we are not going to make stars because it is the media which can build image of players and they can motivate and if they do this more people will follow this game and encourage their children to even play. “If every time you are criticising the captain and players then how can you make stars and cricket will also lose its charisma for our people. They must understand it is really difficult to develop Pakistan cricket.” Source: IBNLive

Pakistan Resolution Day – 23rd March 1940

By: Farhan Imaan INCPak The people of Pakistan celebrate the 23rd of March, every year, with great zeal and enthusiasm, to commemorate the most outstanding achievement of sub-continent Muslims who passed the historic Pakistan Resolution on this day at Minto Park, Lahore in 1940. The Lahore Pakistan Resolution also known as Karar darey Pakistan was indeed a landmark in the history for the Muslims of the sub-continent. Before this, the Muslims of sub-continent had no goal and no future in view and Muslim politics remained in the hands of the individuals with conflicting interests and inclinations. As soon as Lahore Resolution was passed by the Muslim League, the Hindu press started criticising the Muslim League and declared this resolution as Pakistan Resolution. The personality of Mohammad Ali Jinnah was also criticised by the Hindus and their prominent leaders. Mohammad Ali Jinnah got nationwide popularity after Lahore Resolution, because the Muslims of India had a lot of expectations from him and he was the only source of inspiration for the Muslims. The All India Muslim League played a vital role in the creation of Pakistan in the year 1940. Muslim league had become a stronger political party for the Muslims of Indo-Pak Subcontinent, under which the Muslims were struggling for a separate homeland for them. The great leader of the Muslims, Mohammad Ali Jinnah by the time had become

the lining symbol of Muslim unity and Muslim politics and the Muslims had so completely centred on him that he had become almost an institution in himself.

Pakistan Resolution Day In the words of Quaid-i-Azam: “Hindus and the Muslims belong to two different religions, philosophies, social customs and literature. They neither inter-marry nor inter-dine and, indeed, they belong to two different civilizations that are based mainly on conflicting ideas and conceptions. Their concepts on life and of life are different. It is quite clear that Hindus and Muslims derive their inspiration from different sources of history. They have different epics, different heroes and different episodes…” The resolution which was passed at the session reads: “No constitutional plan would be workable or acceptable to the Muslims unless geographical contiguous units are demarcated into regions which should be so constituted with such territorial readjustments as may be necessary. That the areas in which the Muslims are numerically in majority as in the North-Western and Eastern zones of India should be grouped to constitute independent states in which the constituent units shall be autonomous and sovereign”. It further reads, “That adequate, effective and mandatory safeguards shall be specifically provided in the constitution for minorities in the units and in the regions for the protection of their religious, cultural, economic, political, administrative and other

rights of the minorities, with their consultation. Arrangements thus should be made for the security of Muslims where they were in a minority”. The Resolution turned down the concept of United India and recommended the creation of an independent Muslim state consisting of Punjab, N. W. F. P (now Khyber Pakhtonkhwa), Sindh and Balochistan in the northwest, and Bengal and Assam in the northeast. The Majority of Pakistani specially The Youth is Patriot and follow the footsteps of Quaid-e-Azam, but unfortunately Pakistani Government time to time messed up the idealogy of Pakistan completely. In 1940 The muslims decided their destiny hence not for the way it is in the present 2014, everything is totally opposite and messed up completely. Last Year Balochistan Liberation Army ( BLA ) Blown off Quaid’s Residency. Sad and Shameful for the Government, Only one gaurd as assigned to take care of this treasure, that’s not all you won’t believe what’s happening at Mazar-e-Quaid, Quaide-Azam always spoken about the Justice but that does not exist anymore for the ordinary Pakistani at all. Where is Quaid’s Pakistan? Why only Youth Cares and nobody else even remembers what he said and what Pakistan should’ve been by now. In 1960 ” Pakistan was about to be the Asian Tigers ” one of the leading South Asian Country in the region but after the fall of Dhaka everything changed.

Until 1973 There was no Authentic Constitution in the country, although 1958 Constitution existed but don’t know who and how practiced it. What 1973’s constitution changed for an ordinary man in Pakistan ! NOTHING until now there is no sign of Justice. Don’t Blame the youth for the wrong decisions and plannings, Government is busy somewhere else while distributing Laptops and Loan with Interest which is Haram in Islam for the Youth. Still we have the chance to Save Pakistan from these Corrupt people in Power, You and I make the difference, trust me, we live and die for our motherland and we have that same spirit to lead our country proudly, InshaAllah we will succeed. We are determined, United , Committed and Devoted to serve our People, We have no difference and this day is very important for us, we are Thankful of everyone those who Anticipated in Pakistan Resolution in 1940, Without it, we wouldn’t had this beautiful land known as Pakistan ” No matter where you go in Pakistan, You feel like Home” because it is. – Take Care of Pakistan and Quaid’s Dream come true…. Love Live Pakistan .

Air Commodore M. Zafar Masud

Air Commodore M. Zafar Masud - A beth. His burial included a Guard of Honor stan (now Bangladesh) and held the posiPioneer of the Pakistan Air Force from the Pakistan Air Force. As a tribute to tions of Air Officer Commanding and Unihas recently been published (ISBN: 9780982611067) and released in the United States of America. In this book, author Nasim Yousaf (grandson of Allama Mashriqi) tells the story of Air Commodore Masud - a decorated Pakistani fighter pilot, who sacrificed his promising career in an effort to save Pakistan. Masud resigned from the Air Force based on a principled stand against the use of military force in East Pakistan. Air Commodore Masud was the son of the late Zakia Sultana (Allama Mashriqi’s niece). During the 1965 war with India, Air Commodore Masud was the Base Commander of the Sargodha Base (now PAF Base Mushaf). He and the pilots under his command at Sargodha Base fought the war with extraordinary courage. As a result of his valiant and heroic performance, Air Commodore Masud received the prestigious honors of Hilal-i-Jurat (1965) and Sitara-iBasalat (1971). The Daily Times (October 08, 2003, Lahore) wrote that Air Commodore Masud “was one of three recipients of the Hilal-e-Jurat from the Pakistan Air Force for services during the 1965 war...” Air Commodore Masud passed away in Karachi (Pakistan) on October 07, 2003 and was laid to rest in the Karachi Military Graveyard next to his beloved wife, Eliza-

the departed soul, Retired Air Chief Marshal Jamal A. Khan wrote a stellar article in the daily Dawn (Oct 13, 2003) newspaper (Karachi) entitled “Mitty Masud folds his wings.” Book Description (from the Back Cover): “The late Air Commodore M. Zafar Masud helped to mould the Pakistan Air Force into an effective fighting machine. Pakistan will remember him as one who made a great contribution towards the development of the Pakistan Air Force...” - Air Marshal (Retd.) Asghar Khan “An exceptional fighter pilot... Masud...was widely respected and regarded as a probable future air force chief.” - Air Chief Marshal (Retd.) Jamal A. Khan ***Air Commodore Mohammad Zafar Masud is among the pioneers of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF). At the time of the partition of India in 1947, he was already an air force pilot and became the youngest founding member of the newly born Royal Pakistan Air Force (later Pakistan Air Force). In the PAF, he was affectionately known as “Mitty Masud” and is remembered as a top-rated fighter pilot and “the most brilliant planner and professional commander ever produced by PAF” (Retired Air Marshal Inam-ul-Haq Khan). Masud was also posted to East Paki-

fied Commander of Eastern Military High Command at a time when Pakistan was confronted with great political turmoil in its East wing. Air Commodore Masud’s contributions to the Air Force were well renowned. He led a formation of Sabre jets that set a world record in aviation. As part of building the PAF, Masud also founded the Fighter Leaders’ School (now known as the Combat Commanders’ School). This institution has earned a reputation as the ‘Top Gun’ base of the Pakistan Air Force. He also authored The Story of the Pakistan Air Force - A Saga of Courage and Honour, which provided an account of the PAF from 1947-1988. A hero of the 1965 war, Masud was awarded the second highest military honor in Pakistan, the Hilal-e-Jurat. Many pilots under Masud’s command also received honors. This book tells the captivating story of Air Commodore Masud’s career, elucidates on the circumstances that prevailed in East Pakistan before its breakup from West Pakistan, and sheds light on how the Pakistani leadership’s handling of the grave situation in the East wing led to Air Commodore Masud’s resignation.

About the Author: Scholar and Historian Nasim Yousaf has conducted extensive research since 1996, primarily focused on Allama Mashriqi and Dr. Akhter Hameed Khan. His works have been published in prestigious academic and peer-reviewed journals in the United States of America. Thus far he has published 33 works, which include 14 books and 19 digital versions of rare and historical documents. Arif usually sings accompanied by a native musical instrument resembling tongs (called a chimta). His folk music is representative of the traditional folk heritage of thePunjab. He is the son of folk singer Alam Lohar. Arif Lohar was born in Lala Musa in Gujrat District, Punjab, Pakistan. His father was Alam Lohar, who belonged to the village of Achh in nearby Kharian Tehsil, and was a prominent folk singer of Punjab and Pakistan. Arif Lohar started singing with his father and eldest brother, Arshad Mahmood Lohar, and younger brother Tariq Lohar at an early age. He also has a younger brother called Irfan Mahmood Lohar who also lives in the UK. Arif Lohar briefly moved to acting in Punjabi movies before returning to his music career at the age of 22. Arif Lohar has played more than 50 foreign tours around the world during the last 20 years, including to the UK, US and UAE. In 2004, he performed in China for the opening of the Asian Games, which had a crowd of close to 1 million. He once performed in North Korea for the late President Kim Jong-il as part of an international delegation of peace and goodwill. He has also played multiple lead roles in Punjabi movies, and sang and produced three songs for the soundtrack of Syed Noor’s film Jugni (film), the highestgrossing Pakistani film of 2012. In 2005, Arif Lohar was awarded the Pride of Performance Award by the Government of Pakistan - the highest civil award in Pakistan. To date, he has more than 150 albums to his credit and recorded more than 3,000 songs, mostly in the Punjabi language. In 2006, he made headlines in the Punjabi music world by releasing his album 21st Cen-

tury Jugni, with music produced, arranged, and mastered by Mukhtar Sahota in Wolverhampton, UK, which was released by Internalmusic UK. In June 2010, Arif Lohar participated in Coke-Studio (a Pakistani live session programme by Rohail Hayat). During CokeStudio season 3, Arif Lohar performed “Alif Allah (Jugni)” with upcoming musician Meesha Shafi. Lohar’s performance for Coke Studio featured two other songs: ‘Mirza’ and Alif Allah Chambey Dey Booti/Jugni, the latter a collaboration that became an international success. Filmmaker Saif Ali Khan bought the rights to “Jugni” for use as a feature song in his Bollywood movie Cocktail. Other versions of “Jugni” have also been featured in Bollywood movies, including an adapted version that first appeared on 21st Century Jugni in Diary of a Butterfly. In 2004, Arif’s eldest brother, Dr Arshad Mahmood, formed Alam Lohar Memorial Trust (ALMT) in honor of their father. An affiliate of the trust was a production studio called ALMTV Studios. The studio was designed to raise awareness for health campaigns in the UK, including the Stop Smoking, and Healthy Mothers and Healthy Babies campaigns on behalf of the NHS. These campaigns targeted mainly Pakistani and other South Asian communities with health problems, and Arif performed concerts around the UK to promote them.
