to put Mr. Davis on trial despite US assertions that he has diplomatic immunity. Mr. Davis is charged with two counts murder and possession of illegal weapons. Hundreds of Pakistanis have taken part in street demonstrations. The US State Department on Monday repeated the administration's stance that Mr. Davis was an accredited member of the technical and administrative staff of the US Embassy in Islamabad. They said the Pakistani government had been informed of his status in January 2010 and that Pakistan is violating its international obligations by continuing to hold him. Mr. Davis was working as a "protective officer," Reuters news agency quoted sources as saying. US media outlets, including the New York Times, the Washington Post and the Associated Press, said they had held off publicizing details about Mr. Davis' employment status while the US tried to improve his security situation. But on Sunday, the UK's Guardian newspaper disclosed Mr. Davis' relationship with the CIA. Source: BBC News

Clark’s lead over BC Liberal leadership rivals shrinks, poll says With the B.C. Liberals set to elect their new leader on Saturday, a new poll says Christy Clark still has the highest level of support among party candidates but her competitors have gained a lot of ground. The Vision Critical/Angus Reid poll, conducted for The Globe and Mail and CTV, found 67 per cent of respondents who voted for the Liberals in the 2009 provincial election thought Ms. Clark would be a good choice to replace outgoing Premier Gordon Campbell. Fifty-one per cent of Liberal respondents said Kevin Falcon would be a good choice, while 46 per cent said the same of George Abbott and Mike de Jong. While the numbers might across as good news for Ms. Clark’s campaign, Mario Canseco, vicepresident of communications for Vision Critical/Angus Reid, said that’s not necessarily the case. “There’s not a lot of momentum there. Her level amongst B.C. Liberals is roughly the same one that she had in December,” Mr. Canseco said in an interview. “It’s the momentum for the other candidates that’s really impressive. Kevin Falcon is up by six points among B.C. Liberal respondents. And Abbott and de Jong are up 12 points.” The online poll surveyed 811 B.C. adults who are Angus Reid forum pan-
elists. It was conducted from Feb. 15 to Feb. 17 and has a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points. Amongst all respondents – not just Liberals – Ms. Clark had 42 per cent support, down four points since December. Mr. Abbott moved up five points to 30 per cent, and Mr. de Jong gained three to reach 26 per cent. Mr. Falcon lost one point, dropping to 27 per cent. The poll also found the governing Liberals have gained ground on the opposition New Democrats since Mr. Campbell announced he would step down. Mr. Canseco said 41 per cent of respondents said they intended to vote for the Liberals in the next provincial election, compared to 38 per cent for the NDP. However, that three-point gap fell within the poll’s margin of error. The December poll had the two parties in a virtual tie at 38 per cent each. Mr. Canseco said voters who previously appeared ready to leave the Liberals have returned to the party fold since Mr. Campbell – much maligned for his introduction of the harmonized sales tax – said he would resign. “In the middle of last year, especially after the HST came into place, the retention rate for the Liberals was close to 50 per cent, which is awful. You’re basically only holding on to half the voters in the last elec-

tion,” he said, adding the leadership campaign has helped voters reconnect with the party. Norman Ruff, a political scientist and professor emeritus with the University of Victoria, agreed that Mr. Campbell’s impending departure has been a boon for his party. “It has defused much of the deep hostility towards the Liberals,” he said. In the NDP leadership race, the poll found Mike Farnworth has the highest level of support. Fifty-nine per cent of NDP voters and 42 per cent of all respondents said he would be a good choice to replace Carole James as party leader. Adrian Dix received endorsement from 45 per cent of NDP voters and 27 per cent of all respondents. “What’s interesting about Farnworth is here’s a guy who conceivably would be moving the NDP closer to the centre. There’s this discussion that this is going to be very detrimental to the NDP, that the base is going to be unhappy,” Mr. Canseco said. “But he’s at 59 per cent among NDP voters so I think it’s more a question of can this person really lead us to victory even if he might not be as left-wing as we would want.” The NDP will choose their leader on April 17. Gaddafi defiant as state teeters Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan leader, clings to power in the face of mass protests demanding his resignation, as parts of the country's state structure appear to be disintegrating around him. Fears are growing that Libya's state apparatus, once seen as a powerful and coherent entity, is facing collapse as key officials quit the government, with some joining the protesters, and as international isolation mounts. Fresh gunfire was reported in the capital Tripoli on Wednesday, after Gaddafi called on his supporters to take back the streets from anti-government protesters. The fighting in Tripoli came as the opposition reportedly seized control of Misurata, according to the Associated Press. Speaking in a televised address on Tuesday evening, Gaddafi vowed to fight on and die a "martyr" on Libyan soil. He called on his supporters to take back the streets on Wednesday from protesters who are demanding that he step down. He also claimed that he had "not yet ordered the use of force", warning that "when I do, everything will burn". Gaddafi, who termed the protests an "armed rebellion", said that security cordons set up by police and the military would be lifted on Wednesday, telling his supporters to "go out and fight [anti-government protesters]". He blamed the uprising in the country on "Islamists", and warned that an "Islamic emirate" has already been set up in Bayda and Derna, where he threatened the use of extreme force. "I am a fighter, a revolutionary from tents ... I will die as a martyr at the end," Gaddafi, who has been in power for 41 years, said. Several hundred people held a pro-Gaddafi rally in central Tripoli on Tuesday night, cheering the Libyan leader as he made his speech. Demonstrators in the eastern city of Benghazi, which is now controlled by anti-government protesters, angrily threw shoes at a screen showing the address. While Gaddafi has insisted that the country is stable, however, international leaders have warned that the growing violence and increasing numbers of government and military renouncement of Gaddafi's leadership indicate that the state structure is in critical danger. William Hague, the British foreign minister, has said that there are "many indications of the structure of the state collapsing in Libya". "The resignation of so many ambassadors and diplomats, reports of ministers changing sides within Libya itself, shows the system is in a very serious crisis," he said. Libyan diplomats across the world have either resigned in protest at the use of violence against citizens, or renounced Gaddafi's leadership, saying that they stand with the protesters. Late on Tuesday night, General Abdul-Fatah Younis, the country's interior minister, became the latest government official to stand down, saying that he was resigning to support what he termed as the "February 17 revolution". He urged the Libyan army to join the people and their "legitimate demands". On Wednesday, Youssef Sawani, a senior aide to Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, one of Muammer Gaddafi's sons, resigned from his post "to express dismay against violence", Reuters reported. Earlier, Mustapha Abdeljalil, the country's justice minister, had resigned in protest at the "excessive use of violence" against protesters, and diplomat's at Libya's mission to the United Nations called on the Libyan army to help remove "the tyrant Muammar Gaddafi". A group of army officers has also issued a statement urging soldiers to "join the people" and remove Gaddafi from power. Source: Al-Jazeera

Bahrain frees political prisoners At least 50 political prisoners have been released in Bahrain, including 23 Shia activists accused of plotting to overthrow the kingdom's al-Khalifa dynasty. The state also pardoned two others abroad, including opposition leader Hassan Mashaima, an MP told the AFP news agency. The move late on Tuesday comes after state media reported that King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa had ordered the release of prisoners, a demand of protesters seeking an elected government in the country. Ibrahim Mattar of the Shia Wefaq party told the Reuters news agency it was a "positive move" but that dozens still remain in jail. "Allowing the people to protest and releasing those people are positive moves," he said. But Mohammed al-Tajir, a human rights lawyer representing some of the detainees, said he was not sure that the release of prisoners would be enough to satisfy protesters. "We are not sure even about the number of the released detainees. We are expecting that more than 600 defendants were in jail and only some of these have been released since last night, including the 23 Shia activists," said al-Tajir. He said up to 200 may have been released since Tuesday night, and that those freed were political prisoners or "clerics who are normally active in political or human rights issues". Shias account for about 70 per cent of the population, but are a minority in Bahrain's 40-seat parliament. The United States on Tuesday welcomed the state's announcement that it would begin releasing prisoners and permit peaceful demonstrations. "We commend the steps taken by King Hamad as well as Crown Prince Salman and others to restore calm to Bahrain, to allow peaceful demonstrations to take place," PJ Crowley, the state department spokesman, said. Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, added that the "steps need to be followed by concrete actions and reform". "There is no place for violence against peaceful protesters." But opposition groups are still waiting for the al-Khalifa family, which has ruled Bahrain for 200 years, to accept the principle of a constitutional monarchy before agreeing to enter into dialogue. "The main point we are waiting for is the initiative for political reform. Until now they didn't promise anything," Mattar said. "If they don't say it, we are wasting our time." Earlier on Tuesday, tens of thousands of people descended upon Pearl Roundabout in Manama, the capital, calling for the government's downfall, in the biggest rally in more than a week of protests. A total of seven people have been killed and hundreds wounded in the country's worst unrest since the 1990s Source: Al-Jazeera

Vancouver named world's most liveable city
For the fifth year in a row, Vancouver has been named the most liveable city in the world. Still riding an Olympic high from hosting the 2010 Winter Games, the city beat out Melbourne, Australia and Vienna, Austria as the place where people would prefer to live if they could choose anywhere in the world. Two other Canadian cities, Toronto and Calgary, also made the Economist Intelligence Unit's top 10 list at fourth and fifth respectively. At the other end of the spectrum was Harare, Zimbabwe, a once-beautiful city that has lost its allure after three decades of Robert Mugabe's rule. Vancouver took the top spot with a score of 98 per cent based on rankings including health care, infrastructure, culture, environment and education. The Economist Intelligence Unit, a market research department of The Economist magazine, surveyed 140 cities. Vancouver deserves to be at the top of the list, but it can just as easily be knocked off, said Tourism Vancouver president Rick Antonson. "This is something we can never, ever take for granted," he said. "It's something as a Vancouver resident it's wonderful since you have your own set of glasses to look through. Given what this means to visitors, this means the city has all the right attributes. But being able to sustain something like that is a constant watch. It has to be top of mind that we do not let something like that slip." Vancouver Mayor
Gregor Robertson was also pleased with the ranking, which Vancouver first earned in 2007 before his Vision Vancouver party came to power. The city's problems with the Olympic Village, its battle to end street homelessness and a persistent drug trade all appeared to have little impact on the ranking. Only petty crime was an issue. Eight of the 10 top spots went to cities in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with Vienna coming third and Helsinki, Finland sixth. "Vancouver remains at the top of the ranking, a position that can only have been cemented by the successful hosting of the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, which provided a boost to the infrastructure and culture and environment categories," the report summary said. "Only petty crime presents any difficulties for Vancouver, although this would be a shortfall of any such location," it said. Jon Copestake, the report's editor, said mid-sized cities in developed countries that have low population densities generally scored well because they had cultural and infrastructure benefits but also had fewer issues with crime and congestion. Pittsburgh was the top U.S. city, in 29th place, just ahead of Honolulu, while Los Angeles moved up three places to 44th and New York held onto the 56th spot. London moved up one place to 53rd while Paris came in at number 16. The top Asian city was Osaka at number 12, tying Geneva, Switzerland and beating out the Japanese capital of Tokyo, which came in at 18. Hong Kong was at 31 but Beijing, capital of the world's most populous nation and No. 2 economy, straggled in at 72. At the other end of the list, African and Asian nations made up the bottom of the survey's rankings. Many of those are subsumed in political turmoil, poverty and war. "Conflict is responsible for many of the poorest performing scores," the report said, pointing to issues such as violence, crime, civil insurgency and war. Source: Vancouver Sun
India hands down Godhra verdict An Indian court has found 31 people guilty of the 2002 Godhra train burning, which killed 59 Hindu pilgrims and sparked religious violence that left 2,000 people dead. The court in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, also acquitted 63 people of participating in the attack, following a trial that ended in September 2010, after lasting for nearly nine years. Prerna Suri, Al Jazeera's correspondent New Delhi, said: "This has been a very long drawn out process, a few men have actually died in custody waiting for this verdict. "It is expected that this verdict will be appealed. Families of the accused say they will take this to the Supreme Court and the Higher Court as well. The train fire at Godhra station in the western state of Gujarat triggered some of the worst religious violence in India since independence. Hindus blamed Muslims for the blaze, leading protesters to seek revenge by rampaging through Muslims neighbourhoods in three days of bloodshed. Muslims have always denied setting the train ablaze. More than 1,000 people, most of them Muslim, were killed in the violence that engulfed the state until May of that year. Tuesday's conviction supports Hindu claims that the attack on the Sabarmati Express was a planned attack. But the opposition and media have accused the state government, controlled by the Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), of not doing enough to stop the violence and possibly even stoking it. In 2007, Chandrasinh Parmar, former local chief of the BJP, was sentenced to life in prison for his roles in the murder of Muslim men and the raping of Muslim women during the riots. A national enquiry into the fire concluded the fire was an accident, but other official investigations have differed in their findings. "The court has accepted the conspiracy theory. It was not an accident," special public prosecutor JM Panchal said. Extra police officers were on duty across Gujarat on Tuesday to prevent any outbreak of communal violence in the wake of the verdicts, and local authorities have banned television stations and newspapers from broadcasting or printing the graphic images taken during the riots to avoid stirring up religious tensions. The court is expected to hand down jail sentences on Friday.
Algeria's cabinet has adopted an order to lift a 19-year-old state of emergency in a concession designed to avoid the tide of uprisings sweeping the Arab world, but protesters said the measure did not go far enough. A draft law approved by the cabinet would repeal the emergency law as soon as it is published in the government's official journal, the official Algerie Presse Service reported on Wednesday. Ending the emergency powers was one of the demands voiced by opposition groups which have been staging weekly protests in the Algerian capital that sought to emulate uprisings in Egypt and neighbouring Tunisia. "The lifting of the state of emergency is still positive but it's not enough," Mustafa Bouchachi, chairman of the Algerian Human Rights League and one of the organisers of the protests, said on Tuesday. "We need a real opening up for political, media and social activities so that the people can experience democracy for themselves," he told the Reuters news agency. The emergency measures, long lambasted by international human rights groups, have barred peaceful protests, limited constitutionally granted political freedoms and allowed for what many described as arbitrary detentions. President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who is 73, is likely to remain under pressure - both from protesters and from inside the ruling establishment - to deliver more change and to explain to the public what he plans to do. Algeria is a major energy exporter which pumps gas via pipelines under the Mediterranean to Spain and France. The state of emergency was imposed at the beginning of the country's decade-long civil war, which pitted the Armed Islamic Group (GIA) against a military-dominated government that refused to abide by the results of a 1991 election, widely believed to have been won by the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS). Tens of thousands of people have died in the ensuing conflict. However, in the past few years the violence has subsided and government critics have alleged the emergency rules are being used to repress political freedoms. The emergency powers will not be lifted until the order adopted by the cabinet is published in the official gazette, which is likely to happen by the end of February. The state of emergency was implemented for the sole needs of the anti-terrorist fight," Algeria's official APS news agency quoted Bouteflika as saying at the cabinet meeting. Bouteflika had announced earlier this month that the emergency rules would be lifted soon. Tuesday's decision will have few practical implications: new rules were also adopted which will allow the military to continue involving itself in domestic security, as it had done under the emergency powers. The emergency rules banned protest marches in the capital, but Bouteflika said earlier this month this restriction would remain in force indefinitely. The other measures adopted by the government on Tuesday focused on tackling unemployment, which official figures put at about 10 per cent but is much higher among the young. The government also approved a package of measures aimed at reducing unemployment, which is one of the biggest grievances of ordinary people in Algeria. Source: Al-Jazeera
Iranian navy ships exit Suez Canal Two Iranian naval ships have passed through Egypt's Suez Canal into the Mediterranean Sea heading for Syria, a source at the canal authority told the Reuters news agency. The ships entered the canal at 03:45 GMT on Tuesday and passed into the Mediterranean at 13:30GMT, the Suez Canal Authority source said. "Their return is expected to be on March 3," the source said. The two vessels, Alvand, a patrol frigate and Kharg, a supply ship, are the first naval vessels going through the canal since Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution, after which diplomatic ties between Egypt and Iran were strained. Egypt's ruling military council, facing its first diplomatic challenge since taking power on February 11, approved the

vessels' passage through the canal. The Suez Canal cuts through Egypt and allows shipping to pass from the Middle East to Europe and vice versa without going around the southern tip of Africa. The canal is a vital global trading route and a major source of revenue for the Egyptian authorities. Israel takes a "grave view" of the passage of the ships. On Sunday, after a weekly meeting of his cabinet, Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, denounced the ships' arrival in the region as an Iranian power play. And last week, the prospect of the Suez crossing was described by Avigdor Lieberman, Israel's far-right foreign minister, as a "provocation" by Iran. But an Iranian diplomat said that: "This will be
a routine visit, within international law, in line with the cooperation between Iran and Syria, who have strategic ties. "The ships will spend a few days in Syrian ports for training purposes, having already visited several countries including Oman and Saudi Arabia." The decision was a difficult one for Egypt's interim government as Cairo is an ally of the US and has a peace treaty with Israel. However, Egypt's official MENA news agency has reported that the request for the ships to transit the canal was granted because they were not carrying weapons or nuclear and chemical materials. The 1,500-tonne Alvand is normally armed with torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, while the larger 33,000-tonne Kharg has a crew of 250 and facilities for up to three helicopters, Iran's official Fars news agency said. ROLE OF MUSLIM MEDIA IN NORTH AMERICA Quite sadly, most of the non Muslim media is either too naive or too prejudiced to appreciate the “final Divine message” elaborated in the noble Quran revealed for the benefit of the entire humankind. Indeed, Islam is a universal religion and is believed by twenty five percent of the total world population, yet it is discussed in the negative territory by some from the main stream media worldwide - leading to the birth of illegitimate public opinion about the Muslims. However, any misleading public opinion doesn’t really enjoy credibility. Certainly, biased journalism does nothing but poison the raw minds of many resulting in Islamophobia. Such a negative trend is injurious to the interests of Muslim culture and religion. In order to say or write about Islam or the Muslims, one has to be relevantly qualified to evaluate to reach a logical conclusion. It’s been a bitter reality that the non Muslim media has been giving misjudgment without in-depth knowledge about the practicality of Islam. Main culprit here seems to be the inadequate presence of Muslim media in this arena. Despite the mischievous elements in the media, an honest reporting can play crucial role in the formation of logical public opinion. Therefore, conveying only relevant and true information to the interested public is the responsibility of Muslim electronic and print media. Although, the code of ethics must be strictly followed by the “Muslim or non Muslim Print or Electronic media,” yet, some media indi-
viduals are not sincere enough when representing the Muslims for a number of reasons - including ignorance, discrimination, poor knowledge of Islam, or their total disability of interpreting Islamic teachings in the proper context. Whether it is radio, television, newspaper or internet, the media has the capacity of connecting and bridging communities. Beyond doubt, internet is gold mine of accessibility enriching the minds positively or negatively - depending on what you really look for through face book, twitter, blogs, emails, and the list goes on and on. Muslim media should strive harder and harder to achieve the goal of nation building based on truth but avoiding the evil input. On the contrary, when the media is biased and focused only on commercialization, it becomes irritating for intelligent audience. Ironically, most of the people become addicted to watching TV without realizing that time is money which they are wasting unnecessarily. The worried Muslims are really concerned about their obligation towards the society they live in. Yet, there are quite a few areas needing an immediate attention for introducing drastic changes so that the roadblocks are removed. This would let the deprived people move forward to live among non Muslims with equality. Several communities of different ethnicities have their own media to safeguard their interests. Similarly, the Muslims are looking for a decent way out of the ongoing frustrating situation. They are becoming active more than ever and getting

closer to helping the main stream media, which is absolutely a good beginning in the right direction. And, it seems as if the journalistic monopoly is on the verge of gradual erosion sending signals to the Muslim community to serve the entire humanity by showing only the true pictures of events around them. Fortunately, the Muslim media of today has genuine encouragement to become more and more assertive with an improved degree of confidence. In other words they are more involved and getting closer to be competitive even in the commercially focused media market soon. Better late than never, the Muslims are comfortable to troubleshoot the unfriendly status quo through their own electronic and print media. They are catching up gradually and hopefully would be able to get rid of Islamophobia among North American audience. Of course, only Muslim print or electronic media is in the best position to publish or broadcast information or other news pertaining to their own community. In other words, it is a challenge for the Muslim Media to present only the true image of Islam as a religion of peace, tolerance and justice. In addition to Print media, a daily Muslim presence in the broadcast media and the internet would correct the anti Islam feelings among the non Muslim communities of North America and elsewhere. Once Muslim media is in full force on daily basis, the Muslim youth would definitely be encouraged to benefit, preserve and strengthen their Islamic identi-

learn more about Islam, the local and international Muslim community. Feb 23, 2001 was a remarkable day for the BC Muslim community when Mr. Nusrat Hussain launched his first Muslim Newspaper on biweekly basis. His family’s and his day and night struggle gave a voice to the community. Although I was new to BC, I had been previously involved in community events and sent reports to Mr. Nusrat Hussain for the Miracle but June 24th 2002 was a miraculous day in my life when Allah SWT chose me to join this ship as a Managing Director through some indications shown in a dream. In 2002, Miracle Media Group Inc. was formed. From 2001 to 2006, a lot of ups and downs came in the life of Miracle, many of which hurt the business financially. The Miracle got attention at national and international level during some of these crises. Despite full-time dedication of Mr. Nusrat and me, this paper was not enough to provide the bread and butter for our families. At that time, Mr. Nusrat Hussain, founder of Miracle, handed me over the responsibility to run this show alone. ty. It is about time to build bridges of understanding with everyone around. Through such Muslim media, constructive interfaith dialogues can be aired too on regular basis. Thankfully, several media people of integrity understand the essence of journalism. The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) publishes “Islamic Horizons,” Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) publishes “The Message” and there are many other publications by different mosques. Also, there are Monthly, Bi Weekly or Weekly News Papers and several other publications by Muslim Students' Associations. A daily basis Muslim TV, radio broadcasting, and any publication in English language is the urgent need of the Muslim community in North America. Apparently, the mainstream media has been unable to address the issues of different communities equally. The Muslim community deserves equality and justice, especially when it comes to the unattended or mishandled issues. In order to maintain Muslim identity, the Muslim electronic or print media have to play its role to protect the community from division. The Muslim media also need to do more for giving non-Muslims a positive view about Islam.

A Glimpse at Early Women Islamic Scholars By Imam Dr. Zijad Delic The following is a transcript of a lecture delivered by Dr. Mohammad Akram Nadwi of Oxford University, on the role of women scholars in preserving and transmitting prophetic tradition (Hadith) in Islam. The original transcript has been edited by Imam Zaid Shakir to enhance readability.
The Female Scholars of Islam O Mankind! Fear your Lord who has created you from a single soul, and from it He created its mate; and from them both, He brought forth multitudes of men and women. Be mindful of Allah through Whom you demand your mutual (rights), and revere the wombs that bore you. Surely, Allah is ever watching over you. (4:1) From the very beginning of the human saga, Allah makes it quite clear that men and women are equal beings created from one single soul, sharing the same father and mother, and subservient unto the same Lord. The verse mentioned above came to the Messenger of Allah, peace upon him, at a time when women were being humiliated and tortured. Allah says: …and when the female child, buried alive, will be asked: For what sin was she killed. (81:8-9) This is in refers to an ancient practice of the Arabs (and even some modern societies through abortion) who would kill their female children from fear of being humiliated in the community, or out fear that they would not have the means to provide for them. Islam came to eradicate these ignorant practices, amongst others, and after twenty-three years of prophetic teachings it had conferred unto women a status that was previously unthinkable. The first revelation: Read in the name of your Lord who created… (96:1) left the Prophet, peace upon him, severely shaken, for he could not comprehend such an event happening to an unlettered, orphaned, desert Arab. It is related that he was consoled by Khadijah, May Allah be pleased with her, who believed in him and comforted him in a time of great need and distress. She was the backbone of his initial efforts for the advancement of the new faith, and a noble business woman of high lineage. After three years of secrecy he was ordered by Allah to call his own family to the faith. He, peace upon him, gathered his family and openly called upon the tribe of Hashim and the tribe of Abdul Muttalib to believe in his message. Towards the end of the narration of this event, he, peace upon him, specifically says to ‘Abbas b. ‘Abdul Muttalib, May Allah be pleased with him: “I cannot benefit you on the Day of Judgment.” He uttered the same statement to his aunt, Safiyyah bint ‘Abdul Muttalib and to his daughter, Fatima, May Allah be pleased with both of them. He added: “Ask me of my wealth in this world, but on the Day of Judgment I cannot avail you in any way.” In this address the Prophet, peace upon him, specifically named two women and one man, demonstrating that women possess independent religious responsibility that has no connection to their gender. This independence in faith is exemplified by the fact that the wives of Noah and Lot, peace upon them, both rejected faith. Hence, the Qur’an affirms that even the wife of a Prophet is free to believe or disbelieve. Furthermore, Umm Habiba became a believer while her father, Abu Sufyan, May Allah be pleased with them both, was a

Exclusive INTERVIEW with Founder of The Miracle Newspaper
“ The Miracle will continue serving the community
for a long time to come- InshaAllah. : Sq L (R) Nusrat Husain
Squadron Leader (R) Nusrat Husain is not a stranger to the Muslim community. In 2001, he started the First Muslim Newspaper on a bi-weekly basis in British Columbia. Currently, he is in the Realestate business with Royal Group. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Miracle, the managing editor Mohammad Naseer Pirzada found it fitting to share the thoughts of the newspaper’s founding Chief Editor with the readers and share his experience during the infancy of the newspaper. Here is what he had to say: The Miracle (M. Pirzada) TM: This is a unique event for me to take an interview with the former chief editor and founder of The Miracle Newspaper.
TM: First of all, for those new to the Miracle family of readers, please tell us a little about yourself, when you immigrated to Canada and your career in Pakistan before immigration? Mr. Nusrat Hussain: Pirzada Saheb, thank you for interviewing me for the paper I raised from scratch and nourished it like my own child before handing you the responsibility in 2006. I am glad that after 10 years the paper is still serving our community. Coming to your question, I served Pakistan Air Force as a fighter pilot, Air Traffic Controller, Administration Officer and Intelligence Officer for about 16 years. I took premature retirement by foregoing my 25% of pension benefits in 1990. In 1992, I joined Bahrain Amiri Air Force as an Air Traffic Control Officer and served them for 4 years before arriving in Canada in 1997. I am married and have four children. TM: Did you pursue career opportunities in your own profession before diving into the world of journalism? How did the idea of starting a newspaper come in your mind? Mr. Hussain: Well; to cut a long story short, initially I pursued my career of Air Traffic Controller with NAV Canada. Too much bureaucracy is involved in the process of hiring an Air Traffic Controller from countries like Pakistan. During the course of the selection, I was so dejected by the approach of people involved with hiring that I suffered a heart attack in 1998. Looking at my wife and children (who were very young at the time) I thought of letting it go and look for something else in life. In order to run the daily affairs, I had to do something, so I took over the job of a security guard. Later, I became the supervisor and started teaching security as an Instructor. It started giving me the money to run my expenses, but I was not enjoying the work. Mr. Nisar Butt must be well-known to those in Vancouver from a long-time, he used to run a computer school, and provided me with the idea of starting a newspaper. At that time we did not have our media to represent the views and issues of our community. I held a degree in Journalism from Pakistan and a diploma in Journalism from USA with no practical experience in the field. The idea of Mr. Butt appealed to me and I decided to embark on the venture. I must admit that he helped and shared with me his business experience in the earlier establishment of the Miracle. TM: Did you discuss this idea with the
local Pakistani Community and others? Did you receive any support from them, in terms of moral and financial support as I am often reminded by community members that they had a hand in supporting the Miracle in the beginning? Mr. Hussain: I initially discussed the idea with late Ijaz Chaudhry, late Maulana Raja Inayat Ullah, Mr. Aftab Alam and Mr. Shams Jilani. Mr. Mahmood Awan, Mr. Iqbal Cheema, late Riasat Ali Khan and many other prominent members of the community encouraged the effort. Yes, all of them were very supportive and they extended their unconditional moral support and financial-- by advertising their businesses in the newspaper. Mr. Sid Ali of Soccer Plus from Abbottsford, Mrs. Sajida Shah of B.C. Frozen Foods, Mr. Sabir Pannun of Payless Travel, Mr. Arshad Ali of Barney Pizza, Mr. Shahid Chaudhry of Al-Jannat, Shaista Halal Meat, Mr. Shahid Hussain of 777 Pizza, Mr. Zarar Butt of Calgary Sweets were all first advertisers of the Miracle and there are so many others that are not on the top of my head now. It will not be fair if I do not mention my gratitude to Senator Mubina Jafar, Mr. Lutfur Reman Khan, MLA John Naurani, MP Joe Pescisolido, MP Gurmant Grewal and many more. I owe them all big thanks and apologize to the many names not taken here, but they all contributed towards the financial support by advertising. All of them rightly have the legitimate claim of my support. I cannot forget that; regardless of our later differences on issues, I shall always remain grateful to them. TM: How did you decide on the name "The Miracle" for the newspaper? Mr. Hussain: The idea of the ‘Miracle’ came to my mind from the ‘miracle’ of splitting the moon by Prophet Mohammed (Peace be Upon Him). Our initial masthead carried a split moon, but it could not graphically depict the idea. It was changed to the present moon in ‘C’ of the Miracle by our then graphic designer. I must take the time to mention that Mr. Shams Jilani endorsed the name of ‘The Miracle’. TM: Can you tell us a little about how the First edition of Miracle was prepared and the response from the local community? Mr. Hussain: There was a Malaysian young man by the name of Razi. He had some graphic designing experience. It was after the hard work of many long nights of working together with him that the first copy of the Miracle was produced in Black and White. The response of the community was tremendous. I could see the happiness and joy on the faces of ordinary community members who felt proud of the newspaper and some of them would call me ‘The Miracle Man’. The response was pleasing for me and it was because of such encouragement that I continued the project and the third or fourth issue turned out to be in color. Urdu pages were introduced at a later stage. TM: You served as the chief Editor from 2001 to 2006. What did you like most about being an editor? Mr. Hussain: It is difficult to point out one single factor of liking for being an editor; it is the entire work that contributes towards the joy of being an editor—I guess. However, I enjoyed the liberty of writing the truth regardless of pressure, consequences, preferences and dislikes of any. I offended
many, but none from the community did ever challenge the truth contained in the newspaper. I also enjoyed printing the letters of our opponents without any prejudice.
TM: What did you enjoy working with the "Miracle team"? Mr. Hussain: The Miracle team started from my home where my wife and children contributed in every aspect of the production of ‘The Miracle.’ Later, we had you and your family and Rafique Saheb and Puri Saheb as very active supporter. The Miracle team consisted of a group of committed people who believed in the work they performed. They carried the courage to listen to the truth and stay knitted in times of anguish. Ladies and Gentlemen of the Miracle team; it was a privilege to work with you all. TM: What's your definition of news, what's news to you? News is anything in the public interest? Mr. Hussain: I am taken back to my journalism class where we were taught that if a dog bites a man then it is not news, if a man bites a dog then it is news. Some argue that the word news is taken from north, east, west and south. In my humble opinion, news means the information about happenings of interest in all four directions around you. With the concept of global village the interest is extended to the entire world. We all desire to be informed about activities of our concern. By publishing news of concern, the paper also provides thought provoking process in the minds of readers and that is how people form educated opinions. However, I submit that ‘accuracy’ is the most important ingredient of any news item. TM: What was the most interesting or controversial article or interview, which you believe had a big impact on the Miracle? Mr. Hussain: I am sure you are well aware of the response as you were on board at the time. Yes, publishing of the article of Edgar J. Steel was the most controversial and interesting (if you want to call) article of the Miracle. It had a big impact not on the publishers alone, but the entire Muslim community as ‘The Miracle’ came under spot light and was discussed beyond the borders of Canada. It exposed the strengths and weaknesses of the two communities—Jews and Muslims. Being an optimistic, I can state with comfort that the article initiated an effort of an effective dialogue of understanding between the two communities of Muslims and Jewish people. Out of the conflict, Rabi David Mivasair and Imam Foud Drami emerged as two persons of intellect. I keep reading about their positive efforts. It might surprise the readers that there were intellectuals from the Jewish community; who without agreeing with the article, sympathized with our right of publishing the article as Freedom of Speech. TM: Due to business crisis, and the fact that this small business could not support two incomes, you pulled out your name from this newspaper in 2006. At the time, what were your thoughts about the future of the newspaper without your direct
”
involvement? Did you think it would be manageable for a single person? Mr. Hussain: You know that I was never a wise business person- that was your domain. With business kicking in, the liberty of stating the stark truth flies out. Truth is like a double edged sword, it cuts either ways and harms your business. For the success of business one has to take into account the interests, preferences and dislikes of the people supporting you. I lost that interest in writing, in addition, the crisis asked by you contributed to my decision of quitting and handing over to you for running the business and publishing the newspaper. In our association of few years, I had keenly observed you and your family’s involvement in the paper. I was sure then and the time has proved true that the Miracle team was the most appropriate choice to keep the paper in print. Let me disclose today that there were at least two prominent community members who were interested in buying my share at that time. Knowing them and knowing the team, I refused. I was convinced that forming a new team required time that would negatively contribute towards the survival of the paper. I always believed that it is important to sacrifice your personal interest in the larger community interest. This was my time to put my belief into practice. TM: Do you still read the Miracle Newspaper and what are your comments on changes in format, articles and Urdu section? What do you feel that the Miracle can do more in the future? Mr.Hussain: In all honesty; reading the Miracle might not be on regular basis, but of course I always read it whenever I get a hand on it. With on line provision it is more accessible. I am positive that the Miracle team has managed a fine work by balancing business and journalism. It is imperative for the business to succeed if paper has to survive. Urdu section was there before too and the team under the guidance of Rafique Saheb and the prudent Advisory board has certainly managed a fine work. The Miracle will continue serving the community for a long time to come- InshaAllah. TM: Any thing else you want to share with the Miracle readers? Mr. Hussain: I wish the best for all the Miracle readers and Happy 10th Anniversary to the Miracle team. Life is a gift of Allah and we should enjoy every moment bestowed upon us. Learn to protect your rights and not to walk away with the rights of others. Patience is virtue that helps us in understanding and living with others in a diverse environment such as that of Canada. Don’t forget the home land we come from and remember the adopted home land of our choice. Let us work together to make this world a happy place worth living for us, our children and the children of their children. God bless you all and thank you again for interviewing me. Long Live ‘The Miracle’.

On behalf of the Falcon Travel team, we would like to wish the Miracle News team and especially Mr. Pirzada, best wishes on achieving the 10 year milestone of serving our community! On behalf of Bombay Collection Ltd and myself I congratulate Miracle News on a successful journey over the past 10 years and wish you further success for at least another 100 yrs. As a businessman, I've enjoyed my dealings with Br. Pirzada, whom I found to very caring yet very professional in all our dealings. While producing my advertisement, I found Br. Pirzada truly cared about my Company, our message and our image. All work were done with utmost professionalism and in a timely manner. All our expectations were fully met and the Miracle advertisements provided excellent value for our money. I plan to continue doing business with Br. Pirzada and to "highly" recommend "Miracle News" to all my friends and family. It seems the news print business is getting tougher by the day with a new paper popping up every other month, though not all are professionals, with poor designs and poor coverage of local events. Some news papers merely look like a print out off the internet news. With all this in mind, I would recommend that at least one to two pagers be dedicated to each major local immigrant community, such as Fiji Page, India Page, Bangladesh Page, Arab Page, Palestine Page, etc. Once again Congratulations and long live "Miracle News".
Mohammad Arshid Barney's Pizza Very good job in the last ten years. I hope you have wonderful and successful years that are to come. May Allah bless you!

Message from Our Writers and Readers
Muhammad Afzal Malik Happy Tenth Anniversary Miracle! I extend my heartiest congratulations to the founder, management and editorial board of the Miracle newspaper. The Miracle newspaper started its journey in the year 2001. I remember, I met Mr. Nusrat Hussain, the founder of The Miracle newspaper in Surrey. At that time I was living in Vancouver and I offered my services voluntarily to Mr. Nusrat Hussain for the distribution of the newspapers at the Pakistani/Muslim business outlets in Vancouver. The newspaper has made tremendous progress over the years since its inception irrespective of the difficulties, crisis and challenges. I am glad that the new management under the leadership of Mr. Naseer Pirzada over the period has realized the role, significance, ethics and sensitivity of the journalism profession and media. The positive approach adopted by the present management made The Miracle a community newspaper. The Miracle newspaper is a family venture. To run a community newspaper is a big challenge especially when it is not a financially viable venture. It becomes more challenging when you deal with comparatively a small community. Community newspapers primarily are financially dependent on the community business advertisements. Alhamdulillah! Our business community is now growing day by day leading towards progress and prosperity. I really appreciate the dedication, devotion and sacrifice of The Miracle team for publishing the newspaper steadily. I am a regular contributor to The Miracle. I write articles both in English and Urdu languages. The Miracle newspaper has provided a platform to the local writers and it encourages and motivates the new entrants. The addition of Urdu pages to the newspapers was a commendable initiative. It has increased the readership of the newspaper. This credit certainly goes to the honorary Chief Editor of the newspaper Mr. Mohammad Rafiq. Mr. Rafiq has made a remarkable contribution for the promotion of the Urdu language. The Miracle being a community newspaper should always keep in mind not to publish any culturally and religiously sensitive material which can hurt the feelings and sentiments of the people. It should serve as a communication link to the community aiming at reporting the facts and playing a positive role in community building and not acting as a police investigating
entity. The Miracle should give attention to the youth issues and for this purpose one page each in English and Urdu sections should be dedicated. The progress made by The Miracle over the years is commendable. May Allah bless Mr. Naseer Pirzada and his team with health, wealth, courage and strength to continue this journey successfully and persistently. Ameen!
Syed Fasihuddin Soharwardy, Renowned Pakistani Naat Khawan
Congratulations on the 10th anniversary of Miracle. I am personally thankful to Miracle for welcoming me when I visit Vancouver area during the Eid Milad un Nabi (Peace be upon him) time. Miracle is a wonderful, useful and very informative newspaper. I always enjoyed reading it. May Allah bless you. Thanks for your great work.
Akbar Ali It takes great courage and utmost dedication on the parts of Editors and Publishers of the English and Urdu Editions to Uphold ALLAH'S ETERNAL TRUTH OF ALLAH... Hope you would keep your goal of BRINGING HARMONY TO ALL THE COMMUNITIES (AND KEEP THEM UNITED) in the forefront. "Lo! As for those who sunder their religion and become schismatic, no concern at all hast thou with them." Qur'an 6: 159. Let us go back to the DAYS OF PRE-DISCORD when the early followers took pride in memorizing the Words of Allah.
“Congratulations for this achievement!” Capt. Suleman Mahtab
Zaheer Ali Manki First and foremost, please accept my sincere congratulations for you personally and your team on this milestone occasion of the 10th anniversary of this splendid paper, the Miracle. It is indeed a miracle to see the efforts and hard work of a team of dedicated professionals culminate to this point in the Miracle’s journey through the annals of time. It is my belief that this achievement could not have been possible without Allah SWT, Almighty’s help and Mercy. Publication of The Miracle, in my opinion, is not only a business venture but also a sacred responsibility to bring harmony to a multitude of diverse communities in an ever changing demographics. To maintain this fine line between the running of a viable business and self assumed sense of responsibility indeed reflects an image of a true professional which you are, Congratulations. The main English Section is so well considered and thought out with not only the current domestic, national and international events but also the social, religious and political article of very high caliber. Urdu Section, under the capable stewardship of Mohammad Rafiq, has been flourishing with help from many regular contributors. Writings from most writers are of the finest quality and difficult to pick and choose. They are all super. However, articles by Naseer Pirzada, Shamas Jilani, Afzal Malik, Aslam Hayat, Sis Alam Ara and Sis Shamim Kareem do deserve a special meritorious mention. Job well done, finally I pray to Allah SWT to give you good health to continue serving this community with selfless, unbiased journalism and for continued success.
“Congratulations on your 10th Anniversary. It has no doubt been a long & hard journey & in spite of all the challenges, your uncompromising determination has been both inspiring & impressive. The Miracle has indeed been a great source of information & knowledge. Keep up the good work & may your future be crowned with continuous success, Insha Allah. ” Sikander Tayob
Shawkat Hasan By the end of the year of the last century a group of concern Muslims from the Lower Mainland got to gather to address the need of the community to a news media outlet that brings them the news of their own community and the relevant international news. Less than half of a dozen brothers gathered together at various locations including Van City building in Richmond and at the Muslim Youth Centre in Surrey. Those who were at the meeting were so excited to finally establish an initiative to launch the first newspaper in Western Canada that speaks for the interest of Muslim community. Alhamdu Lilah, all went well and all the credits should go to the very few who reached days with nights to make such project possible. As usual it takes someone with a strong well to introduce changes. Brothers Nusrat Hussain and M. Naseer Pirzada were and still are the unknown solders that put all their resources through the Miracle in serving the Muslim community. I always look high onto those brothers who never lost faith in the community even when the Miracle was denied space for distribution. Today, Muslims all over the World are so proud and happy for the changes introduced by young generation. Thanks to the public media and to the new technology. Our community newspapers are doing exactly the same in serving our people. Keep up the good work Miracle.
“Congratulation Miracle! SubhanAllah, this is unbelievable that one of the best Newspapers ‘Miracle’ is already 10 yrs old. It’s been really a Miracle that the first Muslim Paper was established and since then with a few ups and downs has done extremely well, as well has improved a lot in looks, graphic setting and with interesting variation of contents. An increase of one page (less one Urdu page) of educational Islamic articles, Women's page and Children's corner would be a good addition, which would encourage the grown up Children to read and gain some knowledge and wisdom. I hope everybody would appreciate the one of the ‘Clean’ Muslim Newspapers and not reject it due to some personal vendetta. Thanks ‘Miracle’ and may it survive forever, InshaAllah.” Gulshan Aalani
Dr. Aftab Shaikh Newspapers play a very important role in keeping the community informed with the latest news and information about events within the community and also around the globe. Newspapers should be impartial and honest in their writing. I have no hesitation to say that Miracle has done an excellent job so far. I have found this newspaper to be very informative and up to date. Credit goes to the Miracle Management team for their hard work and dedication. Miracle is doing a great job by keeping the local community informed with all of the latest news not only in the community but also back home. I have also noticed that Miracle is always welcome and happy to take any kind of criticism either it being positive or negative which is a plus point for Miracle. Last but not least, I would like to congratulate the Miracle team for their dedication and hard work, and for what they have done for the community over the past 10 years. My blessings and best wishes are with Miracle and its team, Allah may take Miracle to the height of Journalism- Aameen

Thanks for giving the opportunity to write something as a critic for Miracle. Well first of all let me be frank and I will say whatever I feel, the first thing is that I wait very eagerly every two weeks to get a copy of Miracle. I go to Fraser mosque and my eyes start searching while coming out of the Masjid and the day I don't find I feel a bit disappointed since I have to go another place to find Miracle, which I do whenever I get time. Let me divide into four different parts, GOOD – IMPROVEMENT NEEDED SUGGESTION - GENERAL, please one request that you should not take anything personal as this will be an open heart acceptance. 1-GOOD As I mentioned earlier that this is my favorite Bi-weekly newspaper and without doubt will be for all who have a habit to read some gossip, chossip , here and there, good reading material in English and Urdu. Articles written by Afzal Malik saheb and Alam Ara is worth reading especially I am really impressed with Malik saheb's Urdu knowledge and expression, nice Lakhnovi Urdu which gives a soothing effect to the reader. The weight of the paper shows that Masha Allah you are doing good business Mabrook Alf Mabrook. The news is latest and gives a clear picture of two weeks, although I wish this could become weekly paper (Insha Allah). Urdu section is nice and interesting. 2-IMPROVEMENT NEEDED (In other words needs improvement) Printing can be improved especially pictures are sometimes faded, or not as clear as should be. The reason I am saying because once I brought a paper with beautiful printing and clear pictures that made my day! Deep politics should be avoided in order not to create tension among the community. 3-SUGGESTION How about you do some activities to be divided in twelve months to bring awareness at the same brining the community together once every month. How about writing a short story in Urdu about Canadian history which will be valuable information for those who are completely unaware of the history and geography of the country they live. Jamia Masjid Vancouver hosts interfaith press event BY Haroon Khan On behalf of the Al Jamia Masjid Vancouver, and together with the Pakistan Canada Association, a Press Conference was held on February 14, 2011 by the Vancouver Interfaith Alliance to End Homelessness. This historic Mosque was the first to be established in British Columbia in 1963, along with the Pakistan Canada Association which came into being that same year. Both institutions were founded by a committed group led by my father, the Late Riasat Ali Khan, who was very much aligned with the inclusive ideals and dedication to public and spiritual service that we all share within the Alliance. First United Church Executive Minister and Alliance Representative, the Reverend Ric Matthews, led the Press Conference and read a series of responses to the letter sent recently to all Leadership Candidates of the NDP and Liberal parties of B.C. Non-responses were also noted, with plans for follow-up. Following lively discussion about strategies
and issues, a way forward was affirmed by those present. All are encouraged to support and participate in two public forums on bringing homelessness to an end, to be arranged in the next few weeks with Leadership Candidates of the NDP and, separately, with Leadership Candidates the Liberal Party of BC. Any candidates who are unable to participate in the forum arranged for their party will be encouraged to meet in person with representatives of the Interfaith Alliance to End Homelessness. Ric Matthews proposed convening another meeting at City Hall to formalize structure and process for the group that has been known as The Vancouver Interfaith Alliance to End Homelessness. This Alliance came together almost a year ago through the efforts of several individuals and faith groups, and with the leadership of Nancy Hall in its early months. Along with Ric and other interfaith pioneers, Nancy has inspired my efforts to participate with all of you in this very important work.
Workshops on Muslim Culture Awareness and Diversity By David Ali In 2007, we first became involved in a foster children case which garnered attention among members of the Lower Mainland Muslim community. As community observers and volunteers on supervised visits, we noticed that there was a lack of awareness among MCFD staff as regards to Islamic practice and cultural diversity as well as a lack of awareness in the local Muslim community as regards to foster care and MCFD services. In 2009, the Muslim Advisory Committee was formed with the MCFD to help bridge the gap between the Muslim community and
Ministry staff. Handouts and workshops have been designed to help MCFD staff and frontline workers better understand Muslim religion and culture. We are also in the process of educating the local Muslim community about MCFD services and the need for more foster parents through a series of seminars and discussions. We hope to continue to work together and learn from each other in the spirit of building bridges. The members of MCFD Muslim Advisory Committee are Farida Bano Ali, David Ali, Sam (Syed) Rizvi.

2002 was an exciting year in my life. I was graduating from high school with big plans and expectations for university life when one day, my father told the family that he was considering a business partnership in a local community newspaper. I was not quite sure what it would mean for us as a family, especially for my father, an accomplished architect, who was diving in this new world. He was excited and happy and we were excited for him. No one suspected the life-changing experiences that were coming our way and how the Miracle was going to be an essential part of our lives. Over the last nine years, I have worn many hats on the Miracle team. I attended events with my father and reported on events, selected news, even designed the first website for the newspaper, and filled in for him regularly at the Miracle office while he had to unexpectedly extend his stay in Pakistan. Priorities in my life changed as I transitioned from a university student to a full-time working mom, yet this newspaper always sneaked its way in these priorities. Whether it was a week after giving birth, 5 hours before catching a plane for Umrah or vacationing in Pakistan, I found myself editing and proof-reading the newspaper. This involvement is not limited to one family member, but the entire family has voluntarily contributed towards the content of this newspaper, and organizing events under the Miracle banner for a long time. Don’t get me wrong: there have been numerous times when I have questioned the value of all the work put into this newspaper especially when we discuss the financial viability of this business and when I

witness despicable attitudes and hypocrisy against the newspaper and my father. This newspaper serves the Muslim community without any discrimination and prejudice. The newspaper is also run by the Muslim community, as prominent members of the community from all walks of life serve on the advisory board and offer their valuable guidance about the content, format and policies of the newspaper. It is unfortunate that often, criticism of the newspaper turns into personal attacks against the managing editor. I have often been surprised at my father’s patience and perseverance over the years. For him, this is not a job or business, this is a community service which cannot be stopped or put on hold, not even when our grandmother passed away or when a serious road accident confined him to a wheel chair and dependant on walking aids for several months. Even today, he is as excited about his next newspaper issue as he was in 2002. At the 10th anniversary of the Miracle, I thank Allah (SWT) for His blessings on this newspaper and for giving this Miracle team the strength, courage and patience to overcome obstacles. On behalf of my immediate and extended “Miracle” family, I thank everyone who has stood by us through thick and thin. In the end, I once again encourage everyone, young and experienced, to propel this community service vehicle and contribute in any capacity possible. This is YOUR newspaper, so let us know how you want to be represented! Email, call, drop a line on our facebook page, we want to hear from you!

Message from Our Team and Advisory Board
By Tariq Mian One and Only, The Miracle News The writer, a former Law practitioner, has been affiliated with the Miracle editorial board for more than a year; is an OLD RAVIAN from Government College Lahore and has been living in Canada for almost three decades. I take this opportunity to salute and congratulate the bi-weekly bilingual Miracle News for having completed its first decade successfully despite facing an enormous amount of challenges. It has been a source of pleasure and satisfaction for the Miracle team and the management while serving the BC resi-
dential and commercial community in particular and other communities in North America which benefitted because of its unbiased nature where prejudice has always been discouraged. The Muslims and people from other faiths are most welcome to have access to the paper in both Urdu and English languages. It is worth mentioning that the Miracle News volunteers are motivated enough to present situations based on facts and write opinions/articles without bias. That is why; the Miracle News attracts readers locally, nationally and globally for its sincere reporting solely for the benefit of everyone including its audience. The beauty is that the paper is available in hard print form to those who are not computer literate yet as well as to those who don't have access to it electronically via internet.
Azhar Syed "The Miracle" has really done miracles through these years. To bring a newspaper on schedule, rain or shine, with limited resources, is a miracle. To uphold the banner, Bringing Harmony To All ommunities", at all cost, is a miracle. To keep the advertisers and the contributors happy and satisfied is a miracle. I take this opportunity to congratulate Mr. Naseer Pirzada and his team his family, for their untiring efforts to remain floating in this 'challenging ocean'. May Allah be your Guide and Helper and may you succeed in your goal. Ameen

Eid Milad un-Nabi (SAW) Celebrated around town at 6th Annual Milad Conference by CWCN
On Feb 12, The Canadian Women Community Network (CWCN) organized a grand gathering of the 6th Annual Milad Conference on Mothers and Daughters on Feb 12 at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey. The beautiful gathering was attended by women, and youth of many diverse organizations, groups, and cultures from all walks of life. This initiative was focused on discovering the power and joy of mothers and daughters relationship and developing and strengthening parent – child relationship in the light of Quran and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) so as to encourage an environment under which human values and morals develop and grow in the new generation. This was the 6th year in a row for this annual conference commemorating the life and birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This year’s celebration was a bit different. Firstly, it included a very vibrant and inspirational youth session that was emceed by the youth and consisted of youth speakers, and Naat reciters, from ages 13-21. Secondly, the transformation of the CWCC in to CWCN with greater advancement in the areas of services for women in business & community services and women who have dreams to achieve all that life has to offer. CWCN took the opportunity to sign up members and mentors from almost 350 participants in the packed audience to jointly help and support fellow women. This is a breakthrough in Canadian Muslim community, as this move was never initiated in the Muslim community of Canada. Ms. Aisha Khan was the emcee for the
evening. She explained that the entire program would be divided into two sessions: 1) Youth session, 2) Women’s session presided by Dr. Syeda Saiqa Zubeda, Founding Director of CWCN, consisting of women speakers and Naatkhwans, and distinguished speakers Dr. Malek Moosa, Samar Al-Haj, Kasey Cheranek. The program started off with Quran recitation by Salaman Khan. Dr. Syeda started youth session by stating that we need to address identity crisis in our youth through education and leadership in the shape of workshops and conferences. Talented speakers expressed their love for the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his family in their unique styles and need for taking on his great personality as a role model. They also emphasized using religion to combat depression. Mahnoor Imran and Ramsha Tariq presented Naat and Roha Imran recited Hamd. Other youth speakers included Nabila bteKhalid, Tameen Imran and Sarmah Azhar. All of them spoke about improving motherdaughter relationships from various perspectives. This youth session was eloquently emceed by Aisha Khan. The General session started off with a Daf cultural performance by AICP members chanting praises of the Holy Prophet and his family. Sister Shameemah Kalaichelvan, Secretary General of CWCN presented a power point on the activities of the network and gave a snapshot of previous conferences and workshops. She showed the web network to the audience. She said that it’s a network of network where women can get access to diverse ethnic community services and will receive free training workshops and

ongoing support. The Women’s session consisted of many powerful speakers and Naat reciters. We have a complete manual of our life in front of us in the shape of Quran and Sunnah. The personality of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) is the source of integration for Ummah and humanity at large because Islam is not confined to colour, caste, creed and geographical boundaries. The basis of the teachings of the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h) is to serve
humanity with out any bias. She emphasized the need to transfer our humanitarian values to the new generation through community out-

Eid Milad un-Nabi (SAW) Celebrated around town at Aza-e-Hussain Centre, Surrey
By: Zaheer Manki On Feb 19, The Jashan-e-Milad of the Holy Prophet SAW was celebrated at Azae-Hussain Centre in Surrey with a large number of Momimneens reciting Manqabats and Qaseedas included Azmat Ali, Ali Massood, Master Shams Farooq, Ghanzfar Ali, Shahab Naqvi, Nadeem Kazmi and Hassan Pasha. Mr Massood Hussain was conducted this Milad un Nabi program. Later on Maulana Syed Zafaraul Hussaini, a visiting Aalim from India addressed the gathering and highlighted various aspects of the Holy Prophet∂s sacred life. Congratulations were offered to the thirteen Masoomeens through the vaseela of Imam of our times. It is a very auspicious and happy occasion for the Muslim Ummah. Recitations of the Manqabats and Salaams for the Prophets SAW are not just the tra-
ditions, these actions are our way of achieving nearness to Allah SWT by praising the best of His Creation SAW. The sanctity of such actions must be recognized. All Muslims must make efforts to attend such Jashans with the whole family especially our younger generations and inculcate in them such habits. Due importance must be given to both the sad and happy occasions of our faith. Religious education , goading of our children and attendance at the mosques should be encouraged. As you enter the House of God, turn off your worldly distractions ie cell phones etc. Allah SWT created the Noor-eMohammadi, the best of His creations a long before He created the Universe. The Holy Prophet Mohammad-e- Mustafa is the manifestation of the Excellence of His Creation ie the only one designated as
Mercy for the Universe, Rehmat-ul-Lil Aalameen. Our Rasool SAW is the reason for the creation of the Worlds. After the creation of Hazrat-e- Adam AS, the Prophets have been coming one after the other for the guidance of the human beings. When the Ummas of these Prophets ignored the Commandments of Allah and disobeyed their Prophets, such Prophets invoked God ‘s curse for their people. Azaab came and non believers perished. Contrary to other Prophets, Our Holy Prophet- the Rematul-Lil-Aalameen, never cursed his Ummah. Always prayed for their guidance to the Right Path. Thorns were sprayed in His path, stones were thrown at him so much so that his knees were blood stained , but he always prayed to Allah SWT for their guidance. ‘O Allah, forgive them because they know not who am I . He is Rehmat for us. Allah’s gift

Allama Jalaluddin Chishty later migrated to Amritser (India) where he served as the head of Dar-ul-Aloom Nizamiah Sirajiah and the Imam of a Mosque. Beside his Islamic education, Mr. Soharwardy earned Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) from N.E.D. University Karachi, Master of Science in Management Engineering from New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, NJ, USA and Master of Engineering in PM from University of Calgary, Calgary, Canada. Prof. Soharwardy is the founder of Muslims Against Terrorism (MAT). He founded MAT in Calgary in January 1998. He is also the founder of Islamic Supreme Council of Canada (ISCC). He has authored several papers on various topics such as, challenges for Muslims in the western world, conflicts within the Muslim community, Intra and Inter religion conflicts, terrorism, political Islam, etc. Mr. Soharwardy has addressed hundreds of gatherings in Pakistan, USA, UK and Canada on various topics of Islamic faith. Imam Soharwardy is the founder of the first ever Dar-ul-Aloom in Calgary, Alberta where he teaches Islamic studies. Prof. Soharwardy is the Head Imam at the Al Madinah Calgary Islamic Centre. He lectures in Montreal, Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Calgary and Vancouver on monthly basis. Recently, Imam Soharwardy has established “Freedom of Speech Centre” and the “Green Dome Islamic School” in Calgary. Junaid Jamshed is the son of Group Captain (retd) Jamshed Akber Khan and Nafeesa Akber Khan. His father was a Pakistan Air Force officer. He belongs to a Pashtun and Urduspeaking family. Jamshed studied pre-engineering courses in PAF College in Karachi before joining University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore Junaid Jamshed from where he completed his graduation in 1990.[2] Though, he applied to join Pakistan Air Force but later moved on to a career in Aeronautical Engineering due to his weak eyesight. We Pakistanis and Muslims should be proud of Junaid Jamshed who took a bold step and renounced music to devote his life to Islam. He made huge sacrifices like canceling his contract with PEPSI and abandoning his popularity as a singer. He joined the Tabligh Jamaat when his career as singer was reaching its height of success. In an international poll conducted by BBC to choose ten most famous songs of all time, among 7000 Dil Dil Pakistan was third in top 10 songs. Now a devout Muslim, he explains why it was essential for him to leave pop music. ‘Islam does not permit music, especially the way it is done these days and the money that you earn from it is haram (not permitted). It was not the kind of life I wanted to lead. He now hopes to inspire people as a preacher rather than a pop star. In my previous life, I used to call others to something which was against Islam, but now I call them towards Allah (SWT) and ask them to fulfil what He wants them to do’. He is far happier today than he ever was at the height of his stardom and says he does not miss the glamour, adoration and the money. He compares the two phases of his life. Devoted to his faith, the former pop star feels that he has a responsibility to guide people on to the right path and regularly does Islamic talks, including in the UK. After channeling his efforts into charity work, Jamshed now prefers to concentrate on dawah (inviting others to Islam). Jamshed favourite quotes from the Quran is :Allah does not change the state of people unless and until they themselves make an effort to change their lives. He will host a program on March 5 at Crystal @York in Surrey.

Parenting Styles By Shabnam Khan Family Counsellor Life, no doubt gets busy day by day. Are we involving ourselves in things which we should really be involved, or just avoiding from other priorities? We as human often find excuses and reasons not to spend quality time with our loved ones. Some have involved themselves in habits which has no importance and any relevance in their life. When was the last time you had quality time with your family? Some may say always, sometimes and some has to really think about it. We are all surrounded by different work ethics and schedules but at the end, if you are a Parent, you have to
demonstrate your Parenting Skills when you have to. Despite everything you do, your children play a very vital role in your life which cannot be replaced by anything. As a Parent, we always say:“Their Happiness is Our Happiness”. As a matter of fact, saying it and doing it is totally two different things. Take a moment and think about it. It is often seen that Parent’s blame the children and vice versa. Who is right and who is wrong? Sometimes there is no trust left between the two and slowly insecurity follows. The relationship starts falling apart. As a cautious and concerned Parent, you will be able to notice certain changes in behavior. It will be very healthy to right

there and then take necessary steps to correct them. You have to take your time out to talk to these children when they need you. Someone whom they can trust and rely on for anything. Remember, Parent’s are not only Parent’s but they can be best friends! It is how the family relates to each other. Sometimes we as Parent’s take things for granted, expecting things to be perfect all

The truth is, sometimes we are scared of these changes, to accept them and implement them in our life’s because we have so many doubts in our minds. Dictators are crumbling and Kingdoms are shaking By: Dr. Aslam Abdullah - The televised brutality against unarmed civilians seeking their dignity as seen in Egypt, and now in Bahrain and Libya is neither shocking nor unexpected. In many of the Middle Eastern countries the security forces, drawn mainly from tribes loyal to the elites, are hired to protect rulers at every cost and they have done what they were paid to do. In Egypt, the security forces showed some restraint because of the pressure that came from several US army generals under whose command many of the Egyptian military officials were trained. The US army did not want to be openly seen as an accomplice of the crimes against the people of Egypt. In Bahrain and Libya, the situation is different as the US army has little at stake there. However, what is shocking is the perpetual silence of the leadership of various Islamic movements and Muslim intellectuals all over the world on these known and unknown acts of violence. Major Islamic seminaries in South Asia and South East Asia as well as in the Gulf are quiet. Known Islamic groups have avoided talking about people's right to dissent openly. With the exception of a few Muslim organizations in the US and abroad, not many have spoken against the violence. Even here, Muslim organizations are reluctant to put their full weight in favor of democratic reforms. They are keen to enjoy the benefit of democracy in America and Europe but are skeptical about democratic reforms in countries with Muslim majority. The debate among some Muslim groups still focuses on the legitimacy of democracy as a form of government within Islamic thought. Many still believe that democracy
stands opposite to the concept of divine authority, a position that was expounded recently by Ayman Al-Zawahiri in a statement issued after the departure of Hosni Mubarak from Egypt. The despotism, the dictatorship and the monarchy practiced in almost every Gulf country and most Muslim majority nations, are nothing new. For almost seven decades, the rulers in those countries have been thriving on coercion and the violation of human rights. They have justified their rule by enlisting the support of a religious leadership that often misuse the Quran and the teachings of the prophet to denounce people's participation in matters of government. Many Islamic movements and Muslim intellectuals ignore this reality conveniently. The reason is very simple. A number of these movements and individuals were and are still heavily financed by groups and businesses who have close ties with the regime. Some of the leading Muslim institutions in the Muslim world receive funds, directly or indirectly from various corrupt regimes. During the last seven decades, these rulers have promoted a version of Islam, through financing Islamic institutions all over the world, that promotes sectarianism, factionalism and divisions on the basis of juristic interpretations of Islam. The religious hierarchy that backed them has succeeded in creating a theology that supports the rulers and denounces any attempt on the part of people to seek their dignity. Much of the religious literature that is in circulation in various languages of the world come from outfits that owe their existence to religious groups and businesses owing allegiance to
the rulers. What is ironic is that the opposition of such attempts mainly come from individuals and groups who are backed by the political opponents of the regimes or are the opportunists. Regional political rivalries have played up their conflicts. The Quran and the teachings of the Prophet were always misused by these groups to denounce the other. What an irony that the dictator of Iraq used the name of God to kill his opponents who in turn invoked the name of the same God to promote violence against the supporters of the ruler. When religious hierarchy is itself involved in misusing the faith to serve the political interests what can be expected of the masses? Not many have tried to question the legitimacy of the regimes on the basis of their understanding of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet objectively. On the contrary, they have projected the rulers as the shadow of God on earth quoting the Prophet to

remain loyal to the elites even if they are wrong. The Quran states very clearly that human dignity is the cornerstone of a healthy human society. Without ensuring the dignity, people cannot achieve their highest potential. Tribalism, feudalism, racism and ethnicism as well as class based differences are visible in the Muslim world, especially in the Gulf. Despite the claim of Islamic egalitarianism, there exists discrimination, and injustice in every aspect of social life. Labor laws are non-existent. Laws that could protect the dignity of women are absent. Laws that would prevent child labor are no where to be found. The right to dissent is not accepted as a legitimate Islamic concept. Even slavery can be found in pockets of the Muslim world. Despite the emphasis of the Quran on the preservation of human rights and religious tolerance and freedom, rulers and their

Pakistan opens with powerful win over Kenya, Ponting reprimanded by the ICC for TV damage
Pakistan overcame an early wobble before powering to victory over struggling Kenya on Wednesday, underlining the strength of the subcontinent's teams at the World Cup. Pakistan slipped to 12-2 before four successive batsmen made half-centuries and the
1992 World Cup winner racked up 317-7. Skipper Shahid Afridi then took 5-16 to spin Kenya out for just 112 in Hambantota for a commanding 205-run win in Group A. Also Wednesday, the ICC reprimanded Ricky Ponting for his behaviour after the Australia captain damaged a TV set in the dressing room following his run out against Zimbabwe in Ahmadabad. Pakistan made its impact on the pitch, following the lead of fellow subcontinent heavyweights India and Sri Lanka, who also opened with 300-plus scores in onesided victories. West Indies and South Africa meet in New Delhi on Thursday in what should be an evenly-matched contest, although the South Africans are tipped to edge it. Kamran Akmal, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq and Umar Akmal all made 50's as Pakistan posted a formidable total and never looked like losing. Umar Akmal dished out the most punishment with 71 off just 52 balls, with eight fours and a six.
Stoudemire Says Knicks Will Be Hard To Guard with Carmel0 Amare Stoudemire says the Knicks will be "hard to guard" with Carmelo Anthony joining him in New York. The Knicks agreed to a trade with the Denver Nuggets for Anthony on Monday night, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press. The teams were awaiting the completion of a conference call with the NBA on Tuesday before the deal, which also includes the Minnesota Timberwolves, could become official. Stoudemire has led the Knicks to a 28-26 record this season, but said Tuesday they will be even more dangerous with Anthony bringing his 25.2 points per game to join his 26.1 average. "Every team needs a 1, 1A punch," Stoudemire said. "And so with the ways that we both can score .... we're very versatile, so it's hard to guard us." Stoudemire said he had "no doubt" the all-star forwards and longtime friends could play together, and said Anthony would handle the move to New York as well as he has. "It's what he wants. It's what I wanted, to come to New York and play on the big stage," Stoudemire said. "He has the same type of swag. This is what he wants and he can handle it. We're going to do it together." The Knicks haven't made the playoffs since 2004, but are in sixth place in their first season since acquiring Stoudemire from Phoenix last summer. He thinks the blockbuster deal could make them better equipped to face teams such as Boston or Miami, which already have multiple all-stars, in the post-season. "It's not easy and it's not going to get any easier for us now because the target is on our back," Stoudemire said. "Teams are going to be eager to play against us." The Knicks also would acquire Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman in the deal that was first reported by the Denver Post. They are playing a heavy price, trading Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov and a 2014 first-round draft pick to the Nuggets, who would get additional picks and cash. But the Knicks felt they had to make the move after failing last summer to land two superstars through free agency. "We liked the way our team played this year and I looked at it and I thought we had one piece that was at the high level of the league. We always wanted two pieces at least," team president Donnie Walsh said. The completion of the deal is delayed while Anthony first signs a three-year, US$65 million contract extension with the Nuggets before the trade conference call can be held. It was Anthony's refusal to take the extension when the Nuggets offered it to him last summer that forced them to explore trading their leading scorer. The Knicks hoped they could sign him next summer in free agency, but felt they couldn't wait because Anthony wanted the extension this season, before a new collective bargaining agreement next summer could severely restrict salaries. So the Knicks agreed to trade four of their top six players, realizing there were few chances to add a player of Anthony's caliber to one like Stoudemire. "Now we've got two guys in our stable," coach Mike D'Antoni said. The Knicks hope Anthony will be able to play Wednesday when they host Milwaukee. He is expected to arrive in New York to take his physical late Tuesday or Wednesday morning. Source: TSN
Pakistan had lost openers Mohammed Hafeez and Ahmed Shehzad in nine deliveries, but the next four batsmen put the side convincingly back on course. Kenya gave away 46 extras, 37 of them through wides, in a wayward bowling performance that was followed by a miserable batting show under Afridi's unnervingly fast legspin bowling. Afridi's figures gave Pakistan cricket fans a big reason to smile after recent off-field troubles, which included a squabble over who should lead the team. Afridi will have won over any doubters with Wednesday's performance. The victory also ensures that Pakistan's next game against Sri Lanka is a mouthwatering meeting on Saturday of two teams full of confidence and strongly suited to the local conditions. "It was a good start, but I think the next game is very important for us," Afridi said. "It will be harder and we have learnt a lot of things from here." With the World Cup following form so far,
Darren Sammy thinks his West Indies team will cause the first upset when it plays three-time semifinalist South Africa at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium. Sammy said there was "a quiet confidence" within the West Indies camp, backed by the presence of matchwinning allrounders Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo. South Africa has its own reasons to be confident, with skipper Graeme Smith describing its spin bowling combination as the best it's ever had in the subcontinent. Both captains did agree that the Kotla pitch in New Delhi was a mystery ahead of the Group B match, having been re-laid after its last international game in 2009 was abandoned due to an unplayable surface. "It's an unknown factor. We don't really know what to expect," Smith said. Sammy added: "We will have to wait and see when the first ball is bowled to see how the pitch is going to react." CRICKET WORLD CUP SCHEDULE 2011
Canucks' Vigneault not happy with fourth line Vancouver Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault hinted strongly that Cody Hodgson’s performance over the next few games will go a long way towards determining what the NHL team does at the trade deadline. Vigneault said the team “still hasn’t found the elements we’re comfortable with” on the fourth line and hasn’t “made up our mind yet” on whether Hodgson is the answer as the No. 4 centreman. He said the 21-year-old was recalled from the AHL’s Manitoba Moose Monday because he is a natural centre, and hinted that Hodgson’s inclusion on the playoff roster could depend on his performance in upcoming games. “We have a few games before the trading deadline...there are a lot of things up in the air,” Vigneault said. “We still haven’t come up with a decision on [fourth-line centre].” Vigneault praised Hodgson for his progression in five NHL games this year, calling him a dependable two-way player and saying he was “definitely” an option. He also said he was comfortable playing winger Tanner Glass in the middle of the fourth unit, though his preference is for a real centre. The Canucks have little cap space available to swing a major trade by Monday’s deadline, but they could have enough room to fit a low-cost centre for the fourth line. The Canucks have used nine players in the middle of their fourth trio, including several out-of-position wingers. Hodgson has two points in five games this season, and averaged nine minutes of ice-time per game. Eventually, the Canucks see the former first-round draft pick in an offensive role, where his skill set is best suited. Source: Globe and Mail

It is time to realize that we Muslims are responsible for what has happened to us in the last several decades. We allowed it to happen to us. We allowed suppression and injustice to dominate us at the cost of our dignity. We played in the hands of the power elites and their backers in religious and business and academic circles. We supported the rulers by bowing before them in every sense of the term. If we are responsible for the situation we alone can change it. Let us seek clarification from our religious hierarchy and religious organizations on people's legitimate rights to govern themselves and the illegitimate rule of despots, dictators and monarchs. We must not remain silent. In every Islamic circle, we must demand explanation for the silence of several decades. Those who who misled us to believe that human dignity and human rights can be compromised for the comfort of rulers have no right to continue to lead us in religious or social affairs. The revolt is coming. It is not only against corrupt rulers but also against those religious scholars too who are accomplice in the crimes against people. Dr. Aslam Abdullah is editor in chief of the weekly Muslim Observer and director of the Islamic Society of Nevada.
Dictator : Continued from pg 36 supporters twist the Quranic verses to justify every act of indecency. Those who speak up against these injustices are either often declared heretics or foreign agents or ignorant of true Islam. Obviously, these labels justify their elimination from the society either politically or physically. The situation is not going to last for ever. The betrayal of the so called Islamic movements and Muslim intellectuals will not prevent the younger generation to take matters in its hand. The access to information including religious information has empowered many people to take a genuine stand on issues and pay the price for that. By 2020, some 60 per cent of the Muslim world population would comprise of youth under the age of 30. This generation will refuse to live under suppression, and injustice. It would not accept the lack of human dignity and human rights as the general norm of the society. It will not tolerate the humiliation of women as well as men based on their gender or class or ethnicity. This generation has risen and will continue to rise demanding changes that will shake the Muslim world to the core. The thrones are shaking and the crowns are falling. It is time that those who have been on the side of injustice realize their wrongs and join hands with those who
