Cast your ballot in Federal Elections on May 2!

Surrey Federal Candidates meet the Muslim Communiity Upon invitation from Miracle Media Group and Pakistan Canada Association, the Muslim community of Surrey and candidates from different parties in Surrey Ridings gathered at Pakistan House on April 15. The audience asked hard-hitting questions while candidates described their party platforms. Remember to vote on May 2nd!

With Dix at NDP helm, both parties turn eye to next election Adrian Dix spent his first full day as leader of the New Democratic Party Monday drawing the early battle lines for the next provincial election. "People are tired of this discredited government," Dix told reporters before his first caucus meeting as party leader. "We have a government that's out of gas — out of ideas — and you've seen that even since Premier [Christy] Clark has taken over." Dix, who is on the left of the NDP's political spectrum, won the party's leadership Sunday afternoon ahead of centrist candidate Mike Farnworth. On Monday, Dix said he and Clark will present very different options to voters when the province next goes to the polls, and he believes that difference will favour his chances at forming the next government. "I'm very confident about putting my record and my agenda up against Christy Clark and hers," he said. "That agenda will be about creating jobs in B.C. by ensuring that we're not exporting raw logs as we have been under this government. It'll be by ensuring that we have a public health care system that is worthy of its name, that seniors don't have the worst level of care standards of long-term care in Canada," he added. "We're going to present a clear agenda on education, on class size and composition, which is a key issue in our public schools." On Monday, Clark congratulated Dix on his win, adding that she too believes the next election will be a contest of contrasts. "There's a clear choice about change that puts families

first, that manages your money responsibly, that creates jobs, and change that would take us backward," said Clark. "We've been demonstrating change this last month — raising the minimum wage, putting money back into charities, reviewing BC Hydro rates to try to make it a little bit easier for families to get ahead," she added. "I think voters want a clear choice and I think now they've got one." Clark did not say when she will call the next general election, offering only that she doesn't anticipate doing so until after Dix has settled in as leader, and after the referendum on the harmonized sales tax, which is not expected to be complete until August. "I think we should probably give their leader a little bit of time to take stock and maybe relax a little bit," she said. "We'll certainly let Mr. Dix have some time to do that. We also need to get through this HST referendum," she added. "It's hard to know when an election might be but I don't think it's going to be before we get past any of those milestones." Clark also said she believes the next election will be a tough fight. "I don't underestimate how hard this campaign is going to be. It is, it's going to be tough, and we're going to have to prove ourselves," she said. "You have to work hard to earn every single vote." On Monday, Dix said his priorities in the days to come will be to prepare the party for the next election, to help the party's candidate in the Vancouver-Point Grey byelection against Clark and to ensure the once-fractured NDP caucus remains united. Dix said he will also be working to fight against the HST. "I'll be preparing our campaign, of course, to defeat the HST in a referendum," he said. "I'll be working hard on that issue to ensure the people of British Columbia are not fooled again by the B.C. Liberal government." Source: Vancouver Sun

Libya death toll 'reaches 10,000' Libya's opposition leaders have said that at least 10,000 people have died since the start of the conflict in February. The United Nations says it has been guaranteed humanitarian access to Misurata, while Britain says it will fund efforts to evacuate thousands of stranded migrant workers by boat from the besieged port city. A Libyan official told Valerie Amos, the UN humanitarian chief, that Muammar Gaddafi's government was willing to set up "safe passage" out of the city, which remains partially in opposition hands after weeks of attacks by Gaddafi loyalists. Amos secured the deal through talks in Tripoli, appar-
