Cast your ballot in Federal Elections on May 2!

Surrey Federal Candidates meet the Muslim Communiity Upon invitation from Miracle Media Group and Pakistan Canada Association, the Muslim community of Surrey and candidates from different parties in Surrey Ridings gathered at Pakistan House on April 15. The audience asked hard-hitting questions while candidates described their party platforms. Remember to vote on May 2nd!

With Dix at NDP helm, both parties turn eye to next election Adrian Dix spent his first full day as leader of the New Democratic Party Monday drawing the early battle lines for the next provincial election. "People are tired of this discredited government," Dix told reporters before his first caucus meeting as party leader. "We have a government that's out of gas — out of ideas — and you've seen that even since Premier [Christy] Clark has taken over." Dix, who is on the left of the NDP's political spectrum, won the party's leadership Sunday afternoon ahead of centrist candidate Mike Farnworth. On Monday, Dix said he and Clark will present very different options to voters when the province next goes to the polls, and he believes that difference will favour his chances at forming the next government. "I'm very confident about putting my record and my agenda up against Christy Clark and hers," he said. "That agenda will be about creating jobs in B.C. by ensuring that we're not exporting raw logs as we have been under this government. It'll be by ensuring that we have a public health care system that is worthy of its name, that seniors don't have the worst level of care standards of long-term care in Canada," he added. "We're going to present a clear agenda on education, on class size and composition, which is a key issue in our public schools." On Monday, Clark congratulated Dix on his win, adding that she too believes the next election will be a contest of contrasts. "There's a clear choice about change that puts families

first, that manages your money responsibly, that creates jobs, and change that would take us backward," said Clark. "We've been demonstrating change this last month — raising the minimum wage, putting money back into charities, reviewing BC Hydro rates to try to make it a little bit easier for families to get ahead," she added. "I think voters want a clear choice and I think now they've got one." Clark did not say when she will call the next general election, offering only that she doesn't anticipate doing so until after Dix has settled in as leader, and after the referendum on the harmonized sales tax, which is not expected to be complete until August. "I think we should probably give their leader a little bit of time to take stock and maybe relax a little bit," she said. "We'll certainly let Mr. Dix have some time to do that. We also need to get through this HST referendum," she added. "It's hard to know when an election might be but I don't think it's going to be before we get past any of those milestones." Clark also said she believes the next election will be a tough fight. "I don't underestimate how hard this campaign is going to be. It is, it's going to be tough, and we're going to have to prove ourselves," she said. "You have to work hard to earn every single vote." On Monday, Dix said his priorities in the days to come will be to prepare the party for the next election, to help the party's candidate in the Vancouver-Point Grey byelection against Clark and to ensure the once-fractured NDP caucus remains united. Dix said he will also be working to fight against the HST. "I'll be preparing our campaign, of course, to defeat the HST in a referendum," he said. "I'll be working hard on that issue to ensure the people of British Columbia are not fooled again by the B.C. Liberal government." Source: Vancouver Sun

Libya death toll 'reaches 10,000' Libya's opposition leaders have said that at least 10,000 people have died since the start of the conflict in February. The United Nations says it has been guaranteed humanitarian access to Misurata, while Britain says it will fund efforts to evacuate thousands of stranded migrant workers by boat from the besieged port city. A Libyan official told Valerie Amos, the UN humanitarian chief, that Muammar Gaddafi's government was willing to set up "safe passage" out of the city, which remains partially in opposition hands after weeks of attacks by Gaddafi loyalists. Amos secured the deal through talks in Tripoli, appar-

US 'will continue' Pakistan drone attacks The US will maintain its drone programme in Pakistan but the way forward will be determined by both sides, an unnamed US military official has said. The issue has been a bone of contention between the two nations, with some Pakistani officials calling for sharp cuts in drone attacks. "The [programme] is something that we have said we go ahead on. The question is how," the official said on condition of anonymity. "And that process is going to be something that's going to be one of the main tasks that our intel and our military guys have." The matter was raised last week in Washington in talks between Leon Panetta, the CIA director, and Lieutenant-General Ahmed Shuja Pasha, the chief of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency. "I'll pause from my normal optimism and say this is a tough one. This is a real tough one," the unidentified US official said. "Because that has been so inflamed in the public that the ability of our intelligence and our military guys to get together and say 'what's our common ground here?' is limited." The long-running issue of the US drone strikes on targets in Pakistan's tribal areas has kept tensions high between the two countries regarding the US' role in the region. The covert drone-launched missile strikes that target fighters in Pakistan's lawless border areas have stoked anti-American sentiment among the populace, even though it is widely believed that the strikes occur with the tacit consent of Islamabad. Publicly, Pakistan's leaders have insisted that the drone strikes stop and that the US share the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology with Pakistan so that it can take operational control of them,

but US officials say operations will continue in order to achieve US security objectives. US officials have privately said in the past that Washington would not consider demands by some Pakistani officials for sharp cuts in drone attacks. The remarks on the drone programme also came as a high-level US military officer accused Pakistan's intelligence service of maintaining ties to armed fighters in Afghanistan. Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, made the comments on Wednesday during a trip to Islamabad. He was in Afghanistan a day earlier. In a statement, Mullen praised co-operation between US and Pakistani troops working in joint operations against fighters belonging to the Haqqani network, who target NATO forces in eastern Afghanistan. He did acknowledge, however, that there were also a "strain" due to Taliban and other fighters' alleged ties with Pakistan's ISI. "Haqqani is having a much more difficult time now," Mullen said, according to an article on the joint chiefs of staff website. "All that said, we're still working through the [Pakistani] military support, the way through the relationships the [Pakistani intelligence agency] has with the Haqqani network, and the strain that creates. "I'll see General Kayani here shortly and these are issues I address with him every single time we engage. And I certainly intend to [raise that] this week." The JSC chief 's trip to Pakistan is the latest in a series of high-level meetings that have followed the fatal shooting in January of two Pakistanis by Raymond Davis , a CIA security contractor, who said he was acting in self-defence. SHAHNAZ Zardari asks Shujaat to woo JUI-F, MQM RAHMITULA CGA

President Asif Ali Zardari has asked PML-Q chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain to persuade the JUI-F and MQM to rejoin the federal government. “PPP`s own efforts to woo the JUI-F and MQM have failed and the party leadership believes that Shujaat Hussain has good relations with Maulana Fazlur Rahman and he can also act as a `guarantor` between the PPP and the MQM,” a presidential aide told this reporter. The president and Chaudhry Shujaat, he said, vowed to “meet after the issue of the estranged coalition partners was settled to finalise the modalities of a new national reconciliation government”. Chaudhry Shujaat is reported to have agreed to persuade the JUI chief but has not promised anything about the MQM. A PML-Q leader said Maulana Fazl had great respect for Chaudhry Shujaat and would find it difficult to say `no` to him. As far as the MQM was concerned, the PML-Q chief did not want to become guarantor on

PPP`s behalf. However, he said, Chaudhry Shujaat would talk to the Muttahida leadership. Dr Farooq Sattar, deputy convener of the MQM coordination committee, said his party had strong reservations over the way the government was functioning. “There is need to take steps to end violence and extortion in Karachi and prepare sustainable, people-friendly economic policies. The budget for 2011-12 should not be a conventional one.” Dr Sattar did not set any conditions to rejoin the government. “We are sitting on the treasury benches to save the system and want the government to take us into confidence in decision-making.” On the other hand, a number of PML-Q leaders met Chaudhry Shujaat and Pervaiz Elahi on Wednesday and discussed the `benefits and harms` of an alliance with the PPP. The party`s central executive committee and its Punjab parliamentary committee will meet in Lahore on Thursday. According to sources, the PML-Q has decided in principle to join the government but linked it to the return of the JUI-F and MQM to the coalition. It is reported to have demanded five to seven ministries and the post of deputy prime minister or Punjab governor. The PML-Q leader said: “Our leadership has not yet sought specific ministries but will hold a final round of discussions with President Zardari to finalise matters after consulting party leaders.” Most leaders of the party are of the view that the move will help unite the PML-Q and place it in a good bargaining position for the next elections, especially in rural areas of Punjab where it enjoys considerable support. Nigeria reels from post-election rioting

At least six people have been killed and hundreds of others injured in rioting following the election victory of Goodluck Jonathan, the incumbent president. Soldiers patrolled the streets of cities in Nigeria's mainly Muslim north on Tuesday as aid workers began to assess the toll. The Red Cross said that hundreds of people had been

injured and thousands of people displaced as a result of the protests. Six burned corpses were seen on the outskirts of the state of Kaduna, while burned out minibuses and cars lined the roads, according to an Associated Press report. Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege, reporting from the capital Abuja, said the states of Kaduna and Kanu had been particularly hit by post-election rioting and that "eyewitness accounts [are] flooding in from people saying they're under attack". "We're hearing churches have been set on fire; chaos and violence is unfolding in many villages and people are running for their lives," she said. "It is a huge concern and it is really casting a very negative shadow on elections which have been declared free and fair by observers." Umar Abdul Mairiga, the Nigeria Red Cross disaster management co-ordinator, said: "The displaced people are getting hostile because nothing is coming

up in terms of relief." Also on Tuesday, Jonathan suspended Emmanuel Iheanacho, his interior minister, handing over his portfolio to the minster for labour. A statement from the president's office said that Iheanacho had been suspended "as a result of a number of lapses in the political leadership of the ministry traceable to his personal and official conduct". The statement did not say whether the move was connected to the post-election violence. Jonathan, who heads the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), won Saturday's presidential election, defeating Muhammadu Buhari, a former military leader from the country's north, in a poll that some have said was flawed. Despite those allegations, international observers described the poll as the fairest Nigeria has held in decades. John Kufuor, a former president of Ghana and the lead election observer from the African Union, told Al Jazeera that he was "taken aback" by reports of violence as he had observed the elections take place "credibly, peacefully and transparently". But hours before Jonathan was declared the winner on Monday, Buhari, who stood on the platform of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), told Al Jazeera he believed the election had been systemically rigged. "We have evidence in our hands that the computers [used in the voting process], were programmed to produce rigged results," he said. Jonathan called for calm in a televised address to the nation late on Monday, urging Nigerians to "quickly move away from partisan battlegrounds and find a national common ground". Syria to lift decadesold emergency law Syria's government has passed a bill lifting the country's emergency law, in place for 48 years, just hours after security forces fired on protesters. Tuesday's move is a key demand of pro-reform demonstrators who have been holding protests across the country for weeks. A senior lawyer said Bashar al-Assad, Syria's president, was yet to sign the legislation, but that his signature was a formality. According to the country's official SANA news agency the government also abolished the state security court, which handled the trials of political prisoners, and approved a new law allowing the right to peaceful protests. However the interior ministry also passed a law that says citizens must obtain permission to demonstrate, the agency said, hours after the ministry imposed a total ban on political gatherings. Syria's emergency law gave the government a free hand to arrest people without charge and extended the state's authority into virtually every aspect of citizens' lives. Hours before the decision, security forces had fired on protesters in the city of Homs, killing at least six people. Rights groups say that more than 200 people have been killed in the protests which started in the southern city of Daraa one month ago, inspired by uprisings gripping Arab nations. Rights campaigners also raised concerns that the end of emergency rule will not halt repression following the arrest of a leftist opposition figure on Monday night. Mahmoud Issa was taken from his house in Homs around midnight by members of Syria's feared political security division. "Issa is a prominent former political prisoner. Arresting him hours after announcing a bill to lift emergency law is reprehensible," Rami Adelrahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said. "Lifting emergency law is long overdue, but there are a host of other laws that should be scrapped, such as those giving security forces immunity from prosecution, and giving powers to military courts to try civilians," he added. The latest developments come after protesters in Homs, Syria's third largest city, began a three-day strike and vowed to continue demonstrations in Clock Square after security forces opened fire and used teargas on Monday night to disperse a sit-in. "We have announced a three-day general strike in the city starting from today to show our objection," Khalid, a shopkeeper from the city who did not wish to give his last name for fear of reprisal, said on Tuesday. He said the general strike in the industrial city had been announced from the Grand Mosque in Homs. Locals described Homs, a city of 1.5 million people, as looking "like a war zone", with all shops and businesses closed for the strike. According to eyewitnesses hundreds of security agents have taken up positions in and around Clock Square, sealing the area off, despite the efforts of 100 more protesters to join the central square. "They have blocked all the roads to the square with fire trucks," said Abu Mohammed, a local university student. "It's like a war zone. There is glass everywhere and we can see snipers on the roof tops." Funerals for four people killed during the crackdown on protests in Homs took place on Tuesday, according to an eyewitness who took part in the processions. "Mourners are chanting: 'We sacrifice our blood and our soul to the martyrs,'" said Abu Haider, a car painter from the city. Source: Al-Jazeera

Deadly car bombs hit Baghdad Green Zone At least five people killed and 22 others wounded as two suicide car blasts hit near the heavily-fortified area.

Mubarak deputy quizzed over protest deaths Omar Suleiman, the former Egyptian vice-president, has been questioned in connection with violence against protesters during the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak, the president, the general prosecutor's office has said. Suleiman, the country's long-time chief of intelligence, was questioned about "information held by the intelligence services on the events of the January 25 revolution," the prosecutor's office said on Tuesday. He was asked about "the killing of protesters during peaceful [anti-regime] protests and over the wealth of the former president and his family," it said. Mubarak, who had ruled Egypt since 1981, named Suleiman his first ever vice-president on January 29 in a bid to placate the growing protest movement. Nationwide protests that erupted on January 25 and eventually toppled Mubarak's regime on February 11. Rawya Rageh, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Cairo, said: "It actually is not clear if Mr Omar Suleiman is under house arrest or not. "We do know for a fact that he's not being detained pending those investigations, we know that he was summoned on Monday to be questioned over information he would have been privy to in his capacity as intelligence chief of the country. "We know that there has been no official announcement banning him from travel like the other members of the inner circle of president Mubarak." A government fact-finding mission announced on Tuesday that at least 846 Egyptians died in the nearly three-week-long popular uprising. In their report, the panel of judges described police forces shooting protesters in the head and chest with live ammunition and presented a death toll more than twice that of previous official estimates. "The fatal shots were due to firing bullets at the head and the chest," the report read, adding that "a huge number of eye injures," filled hospitals, and hundreds lost their sight. Earlier official estimates put out by a Mubarak associate had put the toll from the days of demonstrations, in which protesters battled heavily armed legions of riot police, at 365, but local groups had put the figure much higher. The mission held Mubarak ultimately responsible for the killing of the protesters since Habib elAdly, his interior minister, had issued the orders to open fire. Omar Marwan, the head of the commission, said the report is based on the accounts of 17,058 officials and eyewitnesses, along with 800 video clips and pictures obtained from individuals who were present at the protest Source: Al-Jazeera

French blame immigrants for integration failure: poll

Two-thirds of French people see the integration of immigrants into France as a failure and most believe the fault lies with the immigrants, an opinion poll showed on Wednesday. In the poll by Harris Interactive, published in the daily Le Parisien, 66% of respondents said immigrants had adapted badly to life in France and just over half felt the situation had worsened in the past ten years. More than three quarters of the sample group said immigrants had not made enough of an effort to adapt to French society, according to the poll, carried out between April 8-10 among 1,631 people from all political backgrounds. The results mirror those from an IFOP poll in January. They reveal deepening unease

over the French integration model and reflect similar trends across Europe, where fears that foreigners are taking advantage of welfare systems is boosting support for far-right parties. “Look at what’s happening in Finland. Look at what happened in Sweden. We are in a situation where views on immigrants are changing at a European level and people are asking to be reassured,” said JeanDaniel Levy, head of research at the Harris Interactive polling agency. Swedish voters elected a far-right party into parliament last year and the populist True Finns party scored strongly in Finland’s parliamentary election on Sunday. France’s anti-immigrant National Front is eating into support for President Nicolas Sarkozy’s centre-right party, opinion polls show. Anxiety about immigrants in general and Muslims in particular has featured prominently in early campaigning for the 2012 presidential election in France, home to Europe’s largest Muslim population, estimated at five to six million according to the Interior Ministry. France has seen intense media coverage of issues such as its ban on full-face veils, concern over Muslims praying in the street and a public debate on the role of Islam in France.“Public displays of faith are troubling to many French people ... but to suggest that this trend is artificial or fabricated by politicians is an exaggeration,” Mr. Levy said. “These views (on immigrants) are common to voters on the right and the left, as well as high- and low-earners. Murder charge laid in York U student death Toronto police have arrested a man and charged him with first-degree murder in the death of a foreign student studying at York University. On Wednesday afternoon police held a hastily called news conference to announce they have taken 29-year-old Brian Dickson of Toronto into custody and charged him with the slaying of Qian Liu. Liu, 23, was found dead April 15 in her basement apartment near the campus. She had been engaged in an online video chat with her boyfriend, who lives in China, at about 1 a.m. ET Friday when there was a knock on her door. She opened her door to a man and a struggle ensued. Liu's body was found in the apartment later that morning after police were notified by Canadian friends of her boyfriend. Until Wednesday afternoon police refused to rule the death a homicide, insisting instead the death was "suspicious." An autopsy did not show a cause of death and investigators provided no details at the news conference to illuminate why they now think Liu's death was a homicide.

Many black African migrants have been living in tents on the road outside the port awaiting rescue for weeks. Meanwhile the leader of the Libyan Transitional Nation Council has been meeting Italy's foreign minister over the future of the country. Mustafa Abdel Jalil said he would favour international ties "above all" with France, Italy and Qatar - the three countries that have recognised Libya's opposition, and that foreign policy would remain the same if it came to power. But he said the way foreign revenue is distributed would change. "There will be friendship and cooperation above all with Italy, France and Qatar," he said after talks with Franco Frattini. Witnesses said government forces continued to pound the area with rockets and artillery. Andrew Mitchell, the UK's international development secretary, said meanwhile that the UK would provide £2m ($3.3m) in aid and work through the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to charter a ship to get Egyptian and Bangladeshi workers out of Misurata. Mitchell's comments came in New York, where he discussed the plan with UN agency chiefs. Speaking on the BBC, he said: "The posi-

Liu studied at Beijing City University prior to arriving in Canada in September 2010. "She was interested in media and wanted to study for an MA in it. She already applied for several universities in Toronto and elsewhere including the University of Windsor," he said. "After hearing the news about Liu Qian, our family and friends were all very worried. But we were praying for the possibility that the victim was a different person with the same name ... soon we found that we could no longer reach my daughter. Then the Canadian police made it quite clear that it was indeed my daughter." Source: CBC News

Suicide bomber strikes Afghan ministry

A suicide bomber has blown himself up inside the Afghan defence ministry in Kabul, killing a bodyguard for the deputy minister and injuring at least three others, according to local television reports. Monday's attack was the third major attack inside an Afghan security force compound in four days. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. The attacker got into the building wearing an army uniform and with a defence ministry pass, Tolo television said. The defence ministry's spokesman could not be reached for comment. Hashmat Stanekzai, a spokesman for the Kabul police chief, confirmed there had been an "incident" in the ministry, but declined to comment further. The injured included an assistant to the defence minister and secretary of the army chief of staff, the report said, quoting unidentified defence ministry sources. Al Jazeera's correspondent Hashem Ahelbarra, reporting from Kabul, said: "There were three suicide bombers, dressed in military uniforms, and they managed to get through three to four security checkpoints into the ministry of defence. "The ministry of defence is adjacent to the presidential palace and it is one of the most heavily fortified places. "One of them got to the third floor, blew himself, killing the bodyguard of the deputy minister and injuring three others. "The second suicide bomber was shot dead and search is underway for the third suicide bomber. Taliban has claimed responsibility for this attack." It was not immediately clear if the assailant was an enlisted soldier or a fighter who had managed to get past ministry security, disguised in the military uniform. Taliban fighters have said that Gerard Longuet, the French defence minister who is visiting Afghanistan, was the target of the attack, according to reports. The attack comes months before the start of transfer of security responsibilities from foreign to Afghan forces, and after NATO-led troops claimed solid progress in efforts to bolster the numbers and quality of the Afghan police and army. On Saturday, a suicide bomber in an Afghan army uniform penetrated a desert base in the east of the country and killed five foreign and four Afghan soldiers, the highest toll of NATO-led troops in a single attack for several months. And on Friday, a suicide bomber in police uniform evaded tight security at the police headquarters in Kandahar city and killed Khan Mohammad Mujahid, Kandahar province's police chief. involve those who have supported us," he said. Franco Frattini said Western and Middle Eastern states would meet in Rome next month to seek ways of realising oil revenue for the Libyan opposition. UN sanctions, designed to constrain Gaddafi, have prevented rebels from selling oil to raise funds themselves. So far, the rebels have only been able to export small quantities of oil with the help of Qatar. Frattini said Rome remained opposed to sending ground troops to Libya, although the European Union said it is a move they are considering. The European Union (EU) says that it is prepared to send up to a

thousand soldiers to Libya if requested by the United Nations, on what Catherine Ashton, the European Union's Foreign Policy Chief, says will be "strictly a humanitarian mission". "It (the opposition) will accept whatever assistance there is but it has a red line, which is the presence of foreign troops on Libyan soil, and that will not be accepted," our correspondent said. "The bottom line is that these diplomatic negotiations have a direct impact on the day-to-day existence here (in Libya), while the outside discussions are getting increasingly divisive." THE TAHRIR SQUARES OF CANADA I thought the role of students and social media could not increase anymore before the federal elections on May 2nd, but youth are full of surprises. From writing and sending opinions to major publications such as the Toronto Star to organizing vote mobs on campuses all across Canada, the youth of tomorrow will not let down their guards for even a moment until May 2nd, 2011. It all started On March 29, writes Syed Hussan on rabble.ca, when Rick Mercer ranted on his season finale, calling on young people aged 18 to 25, to 'take 20 minutes out of your day and do what what young people around the world are dying to do, vote. Days later, students at University of Guelph organized a vote mob. The Globe and Mail described it like a "scene from Braveheart, with more than 250 University of Guelph students standing on a hill overlooking Stephen Harper's campaign stop in the southwestern Ontario city Monday. Instead of blue face paint like the storied Scots, their faces were striped red and white. Along the line, a lone bagpiper played an uplifting reel." Hussan, the writer, works in Toronto with undocumented and migrant peoples and in defense of Indigenous Sovereignty. In the rest of his article, he transcribes a conversation he had with a young child of about age 9 who makes it clear that there seems no right way to go about this Election and that it may just end up being another Egyptian style revolution. Truly, the happenings around the world have fired up Canadian youth like never before.

As a student of York University, I am curious to experience a vote mob even though I am not yet eligible to vote. After vote mobs were organized at McMaster University twice – the second was on April 15th- and they got on TV and the University of Guelph also did it twice and planned a third one last week, many other universities started to follow suit including, but not limited to, the University of Northern British Columbia and University of Calgary (April 13), McGill University (April 14), Fredericton (April 16), Carleton University (April 18), University of Waterloo (April 20), University of Toronto (April 22nd), York University (April 25th), Ryerson University (April 28), and University of London, Ontario is planning for April 30th. The first few that started the wave were - University of Victoria (April 6), University of Ottawa (April 9) and Memorial University (April 10). According to LeadNow.ca, an online organization that was modeled after similar technological companies all around the world such as MoveOn in the USA, LeadNow.ca defines the vote mob as a voter social. It was founded in 2010 by a group of young people who care about a wide range of issues and wanted to create a new way for people to participate effectively in our democracy. Above the list of institutions organizing vote mobs is a quote that sticks out from all the rest: “Send Canada a message: youth are voting in this election!” A vote mob, according to LeadNow then, is

New Morning (Nayee Subha)! By: Aftab Alam, Vancouver I have started a website called Nayee Subha www.nayeesubha.com . I am thankful to those who have taken time to read articles on it already. The purpose of this site is to start a process by which our country will stop begging and instead be able to help those nations who need such help. I realize that by growing vegetables all problems of Pakistan will not be solved but a process will be started which will eventually solve all the problems that our country faces. I have complete confidence in our people. I am sure if we put our heads together we can find solution to all our problems. We need to take one issue at a time and resolve it. Think about it. Today Pakistani people are crying for vegetables, but if Mian Shehbaz sharif can get his recent order for growing vegetables into reality and they are grown in every home, we will have so much of vegetables that we won’t know what to do with them. This could mean we could export these vegetables to Afghanistan and Iran which in turn could earn us foreign exchange as well as employ a lot of people. It could result in start of industries such as storage,

washing and transportation etc. What was once a problem can now be profitable business for the country? I am writing this article in order to request the recipients of these e-mails to forward this article to other Pakistanis anywhere in the world. It is immaterial whether you send to someone in Pakistan or other countries. Please urge them to forward this article to others. In order for us to succeed we need to make as big a database as possible. For that we got to get united. Finally I want to say that our goal remains the same. That one day Pakistan will be self sufficient in most things and abundant in others.

kind of like an advanced polling station. It is basically an event which encourages youth to get together and come out and hear speakers on various political topics related to the elections, celebrate change and youth power, and vote in advance. The LeadNow page describing Vote Mobs also has links to all of the university vote mob Facebook groups and tons of videos captured at previous vote mobs across the country to encourage and inspire students still trying to figure out whether they want to be a part of the political process. York University’s Vote Mob organizers (branching from the York Federation of Students) have contacted Elections Canada to receive special voting privileges. The event, according to their facebook event page, is non-partisan. “Some of us have already done our research and made an informed decision about who to vote for, but ALL are welcome - decided, undecided, whatever,” writes one of the members of the YFS committee that is planning this. The organizers remind students to bring their Voter Registration Cards that would have been sent to them in the mail. They also advise students to call the appropriate riding office and register yourself to vote through the university vote mob on April 25th. Finally, students are reminded to bring the appropriate ID so they can register on the day of and vote in special ballot. But it is not just organizing. Students are also speaking out about issues that will sway their vote, such as Canada’s role in Afghanistan and a lack of the discussion around it during this election. Hamid

do something to get those reduced. As I mentioned to some people at the forum in private conversation, when my grandparents came to this country it took over two years for my grandfather to bring my grandma and my two uncles here from Europe, but that was because he didn't have the money to pay for their boat passage and train trip. This was in the 1920's, almost 100 years ago, surely in the 21st century, we can do better than that. I also did Google the Kashmir situation to get some background and information about that unresolved concern. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kashmir

He talks about his experiences with friends and classmates and asks the reader to be simply thoughtful after ten years of a failed mission. “Those wanting to become members of Parliament, listen up! The only way the Afghan people can be liberated is if we allow them to determine their own fate and have an immediate and complete withdrawal, not one where we say 2011 then 2012 and now 2015. Broadening Our Comprehension of the Qur'an By: Suhaib Webb The Qur'an provides a comprehensive understanding of life. We can go to the story of Adam (upon him be peace) in which Allah had Adam and his wife removed from

Paradise. It's interesting that, in the Qur'an, Allah used two grammatical forms al-jama' wa al-muthana (the plural and the dual) in this verse. Allah says: "Qala ihbita minha jamee'an." "All of you get out of paradise." All of you indicates three or more, the plural form. Sometimes when Allah was talking to Adam and his wife He would say, "Qulna ahbita minha jamee`an." This is muthana, the dual form, meaning: "You both get out of paradise." Why did Allah use the plural form? Because every human being is the son or daughter of Adam . So when the Qur'an says "Qulna ahbitu" Allah is speaking to you and me. Then He says, "And if there should come to you guidance from Me [and Ibn Kathir said guidance here means books and messengers- then whoever follows My guidance will never go astray (in the world) nor suffer (in the Hereafter)" (20:123). So when we take the Qur'an, read it and follow it, we will have a good life in this life, and a good life in the Hereafter. After reading this verse, Ibn Abbas used to say that Allah has promised to amina (to secure, take care of and protect) the one who reads the Qur'an and acts according to the

Qur'an; that He will not allow them to be led astray in this life and they will not fear in the Hereafter. Subhan'Allah, this is the Qur'an. It is a blueprint for how we should live and act in our lives. Many young adults ask, "Is there anything about gender relations in the Qur'an?" Allah says, "You read the Qur'an - don't you think about it?" (2:44). Look at the following story. It's just one example of how the Qur'an can help you in your life. Go to the story of Musa . You see, our sisters are being pounded by two extremes: the extreme of feminism and the extreme of the Burger King madhab. The Burger King madhab is 'have it your way.' You want to do this? Okay, fine. Do whatever you like. And this is not from our traditional scholars, it was born right here. A sister wants to sit with me? Ok, alhamdullilah, no problem I've been looking for a wife anyway! Or alhamdullilah, no problem she wants to give khutbah (Friday sermon), my mother voted in ERA (Equal Rights Amendment) in the late seventies so alhamdullilah let her give khutbah. This is the Burger King madhab. On the other end we have the "shut your mouth, stay home and make dinner" madhab. So we have the extreme of feminism and the extreme of shut-your-mouth-anddon't-burn-the-food madhab. So here are these two extremes and we find our sisters being pounded on all sides. And really, it's affecting them. So look at this one example of how the Qur'an gives us the practical example of how to function in daily life. Go to the story of Musa in Surat al-Qasas. When Musa left Egypt and went to a place called Madyan he came across a well, and there he found two women waiting while a bunch of men crowded around the water, procuring supplies for themselves. What did Musa say? Did he say, "I seek refuge in Allah from the fitnah (trial) of women?" Did he say,

"Astaghfirullah - I seek refuge in Allah! Go home and cook!" No. And of course, he didn't go to them and say, "Yo, what's up? You got AOL?" No. Here are the two extremes. What happened in this story is that they came to Musa and said, "Can you help us with the water?" So women can talk to nonmahram men. This is proved in the Qur'an. But how can we talk to them, and in what way should we carry ourselves? When it is a necessity and we're not flirting. How many of us have read this story a billion times? But we never took this hukum (ruling) that the ulema (scholars) took. So the Qur'an has practical, everyday lessons for us. Another dangerous understanding that we have is that the Qur'an is above us. "I can't read the Quran.""Why?" "I'm not good enough to read the Quran.""OK, but you're good enough to read the Yellow Pages, so you know all about the Yellow Pages but you don't know what Allah wants from you." Sheikh Muhammed Hassan Al Shanqiti said that there are three or four levels in the Qur'an. One of the levels of the Qur'an is that anyone can read the Qur'an and understand it and apply it. For example Allah says, "Pray." This is very clear. Allah says, "Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him" (4:36). It's very clear. Now if you go to Surat an-Nisa, to the verses about inheritance where Allah says, "Give a fourth to the aunt if the uncle dies...." This is not for everyone. But there are parts of the Qur'an which, according to the ulema, are for the layman. Like "Say: He is Allah, [who is] One" (112:1). This is very clear. We don't need hours and hours of scrutiny on this verse. It's very clear. So you should feel that you can approach the Qur'an and understand its basic message. You shouldn't go to the Qur'an, for example, and then go to someone and say, "Now I have a fatwa." Of course not; this is for scholars. But the basic messages of the Qur'an are made for

The election of Adrian Dix as leader of the NDP bodes well not only for the New Democrats but also for the entire province. Dix is a tireless worker, very intelligent, competent, articulate and capable person. It is very unfortunate that the media has portrayed him mainly as a left wing idealist. As a matter of fact, he is a lot more than that. Dix is a realist and pragmatist. He gets things done. Since his election to the provincial legislature in 2005, Adrian Dix has done an excellent job not only as an MLA for Vancouver Kingsway but also for ordinary British Columbians... When BC Liberals were actively engaged in closing schools right and left, Adrian played a leading role in saving schools from closure especially in East Vancouver. As NDP critic for the Ministry of Children and Family Development, Dix was instrumental in establishing an independent watchdog for the province∂s youth and children. He did this by uncovering how Liberal cuts were harming vulnerable children. Dix∂s role as one of the NDP∂s toughest and most effective health critics is well known. In this role he has successfully kept the governing party∂s feet to the fire. Dix is a team player, good listener and a down to earth leader. With him at the helm the NDP is well poised to form the next government in British Columbia.

Surrey Candidates for Election 2011 meet Muslim Community

As the campaign for federal elections kicked in full gear, the Miracle Media Group and Pakistan Canada Association joined hands to introduce Surrey’s federal candidates to the Muslim community and vice versa. The forum was organized on Apr 15 in Pakistan House Surrey to allow sharing of viewpoints by all parties and to educate about the issues and concerns of the Muslim community living in Canada. Ultimately, such forums will help Muslim community a voters to make an informed decision when they go to polls on May 2. Nine candidates from Surrey North, Surrey Newton-North Delta, South Surrey-White RockCloverdale, and Fleetwood Port Kells participated in this public debate. While great efforts were made by Mr. Naseer Pirzada, Mr. Irafan Malik, Mr. Sabir Pannun and Mr. Afzal Malik to gather the Muslim community under one roof, less than hundred people gathered at Pakistan House. The low attendance could have been blamed on short notice at which the meeting was organized, and was also perceived by many as lack of interest in Elections by the Muslim community. The program was moderated by Mr. Naseer Pirzada. The program began with the recitation of Holy Quran by Maulana A. Lateef Naumani and then Duaa was made by Qari Tayab Qasmi. Mr. Sabir Ali Pannun, chairman of Islamic Trust of Pakistan Canada Association welcomed all the candidates and Muslim community at this forum. He also spoke about the Muslim community’s interests and their issues in all elections. Mr. Pirzada then thanked all of the candidates of political parties and Muslim community members who were in attendance. He told people that this was the first Muslim Forum in BC for this year’s Federal Elections. Each candidate was

given chance of giving an introductory speech and briefly describe about party platform. Following the introductions, a Q & A session was held and the constituents were instructed to ask only one question at a time. The following ridings were represented at the forum by various party candidates: Surrey South- Cloverdale-White Rock: Susan Keeping - NDP Surrey Newton-North Delta: Mani Kaur Fallon- Conservatives Sukh Dhaliwal- Liberals Jinny Sims –NDP Surrey North: Shinder Purewal- Liberal Jasbir Sandhu –NDP Kevin Pielak Christian Heritage Party Bernadette Keenan- Green Party Fleetwood-Port Kells: Nao Fernando NDP Mr. Pirzada emphasized that more than ever before, it is important for all candidates to reach all segments of the multicultural population of British Columbia and let them know what they stand for and why one should vote for them. The Muslim community of BC is no exception, experiencing an exponential growth in the past few decades; Muslims form one of the biggest ethnic communities in British Columbia. He also reminded all candidates of the power of the Muslim Vote Bank in BC. According to last census of 2001, the number of Muslims in British Columbia was more than 56,000. Current estimates by local Muslim associations put this number at 80,000. The forum heated up as the floor was opened for questions from the audience. Much of the Q &A session was dominated by foreign policy issues such as Palestine and Kashmir. Other issues

raised included the balancing of the fiscal budget, opportunities for small business owners, and party policy on health care and education. Each candidate made an impressive pitch on behalf of their parties about these issues and also added their personal opinion about certain issues. Members of the audience were eager to ask their questions from the candidates and found it difficult to adhere to the rule of asking one question at a time. The candidates offered to speak individually with concerned individuals following the forum and many of the candidates stayed at the venue well after the end of the formal session. At the end, Malik Irfan, VP of Pakistan Canada Association thanked everyone for attending the forum and reminded everyone to exercise their right to vote. While the forum was a success in organizing a two-way introduction session for candidates and Muslim community, organizers hoped that such initiatives would garner more support from the local Muslim community in future and future forums to be held in other cities will showcase higher numbers.

Harper ignores plight of unemployed: Layton NDP Leader Jack Layton took aim at the Conservative government's job-creation record during a campaign swing through southern Ontario on Tuesday. Layton took his message of creating new jobs to a town hall meeting in Welland, Ont., on Tuesday afternoon. The NDP leader continued to chastise Conservative Leader Stephen Harper over a series of local businesses that closed in the area. Layton kept to his campaign theme of slamming the Conservatives' tax cuts for large corporations. He also promised the crowd that he would do what he could to keep businesses from shutting down. "And as your prime minister, I will fight like hell for your jobs," Layton said.

Layton and Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff returned to southern Ontario on Tuesday as the leaders targeted ridings in the vote-rich area. Layton spoke to reporters on Tuesday morning in Toronto before travelling to Welland, Ont., where he is trying to hang onto ridings he currently holds in the region. The Conservatives have made a strong pitch for ridings, especially Welland, where Stephen Harper renewed calls to scrap the gun registry, using it as a wedge issue in the hope of taking the riding from the NDP. Layton directly challenged Harper on his decision to campaign in Welland without mentioning the issue of jobs. "And then Stephen Harper had the gall to come to

here in this campaign and not mention jobs once," Layton said. "When the prime minister comes to Welland and doesn't talk about jobs, we know Ottawa is broken." The NDP leader listed several local businesses, such as John Deere, a CanGrow canner, Henniges Auto and Smuckers, that cut jobs or shipped them elsewhere. Layton told the friendly audience that perhaps the job closures were evidence of a different style of Conservative job creation plan. "To be fair, Mr. Harper insists he does have a job creation strategy - you'll just have to go to the U.S. to find it," Layton said. While his most pointed attacks were aimed at Harper, Layton also continued to challenge Ignatieff

on why he has supported the C o n s e r v a t i ve government on so many votes and why he failed to show up for the majority of votes in the House of Commons. Conservative Leader Stephen Harper campaigned with area candidates in Thunder Bay, Ont., Tuesday morning before heading to a rally in Vald'Or, Que., in the evening. Source: CBC News

NDP jumps ahead of Bloc in Quebec: Poll

ever before seen in Canadian politics, the New Democratic Party has jumped to the top of the heap in Quebec, ahead of even

the Bloc Québécois. A new poll released by CROP, published in La Presse Thursday, shows that the NDP is the choice for 36 per cent of survey respondents, compared to 31 per cent for the Bloc. The Tories and Liberals trail at 17- and 13 per cent support respectively. If the support holds it could lead to a breakthrough for the left wing party in the province. The NDP wave has been building steadily in Quebec, particularly since the TV debates, where Layton was viewed favourably in both English and French. Polls have shown increasing support for Layton among leaders, as Quebecers have also watched him take in a Canadiens hockey game and appreciated his humorous ads on TV. With support for the party on the rise, it has come at the expense of all parties, and in particular the

sovereignist Bloc Québécois. CROP vicepresident Youri Rivest told La Presse that it's bad news for the Bloc. Those who have stayed with that party are the most committed sovereignists. Those who have left, Rivest explained, are Quebec nationalists who are still at ease within Canada. Layton has also successfully captured the leftist imagination in the province, and is considered the “real leftist alternative now to the Conservatives,” Rivard said. Given the trajectory, an NDP strategist told the Star this week that he was hoping there might be a “tipping point” for the party, following which a flood of support might come the NDP's way. That has happened several times in Quebec's political history, most recently for the provincial right-wing Action démocratique du Québec, which

nearly toppled Premier Jean Charest in 2007. The NDP is faring well also among francophones. Among this group, the NDP is receiving 34 per cent support compared to the Bloc's 38. In Montreal, the NDP is dominating at 40 per cent, the Bloc is at 28, the Liberals, 17, and the Tories, 12. Previously, pollsters had the party possibly taking another one or two ridings in the Gatineau region, besides the single riding it currently holds: Montreal's Outremont. Now, Rivest said the NDP could grab other ridings in Montreal, including Jeanne-Le Ber, Notre-Dame-de-Grâce and Westmount-Ville-Marie. The survey of 1,000 Quebecers online took place between April 13 and 20. Due to its non-random character, there is no margin of error. Source: Toronto Star

Muslim Youth Centre raises $16,000 By: MYC On April 10, The Muslim Youth Centre’s 11th Anniversary and Fundraising Dinner was held at the Crystal York Banquet Hall. The dinner was attended by one of the largest crowds at an MYC’s event. The program opened with Qur’an recitation by Brother Ali Hofioni. The Emcee, Brother Irfan Ali, outlined the goals and objectives of The Muslim Youth Centre. The introduction was followed by an outstanding performance by the MYC’s Self Defense Class led by youths Adam Ishmail, 3rd Degree Black Belt and Alia Ishmail, 2nd Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo. The 17 students were awesome in performing their belt forms, nunchuck form, breaking boards and sparring. This performance was a big hit with the cheering crow. Door prizes were given out followed by a slide show on a brief history of The Muslim Youth Centre. The guest speaker, Mufti Aasim Rashid, delivered an educational and inspirational speech. He spoke of the accomplishments of Muslims in the past who were the first scientists and engineers. Mufti Aasim also said that we must unite and not divide into sects. He also said that years ago it was difficult to find Halal stores or mosques in North America. Mufti Aasim praised the efforts of The Muslim

Youth Centre and supported this great cause. The fundraising was led by the MYC’s President, Br. Kareem Husain, and the guest Emcee, Br. Irfan Ali. The fundraising was very successful and approximately $16,000.00 was raised. The high-spirited auction was led enthusiastically by Br. Irfan Sheikh. There was competitive bidding. Even MLA Ms. Sue Hammell was involved in the bidding frenzy. The MYC expressed gratitude and appreciation by presenting “Award of Recognition” to three outstanding individuals from our Community. They are Brother Sikandar Khan, President of BC Muslim Association; Br. Rizwan Gehlen, CA, and Sister Kaniza Ishmail, Secretary of the Muslim Youth Centre. They have served not only the Muslim community but Society at large for many years with hard work, commitment, great dedication, and kindness. They are indeed some of the great role models. Many youth volunteers were acknowledged and praised. The Muslim Youth Centre would like to thank everyone who attended for their support and generous donations. The MYC would also like to thank all those who volunteered and ask that everyone continue to support the programs and activities the Centre offers. May Allah accept your support and generosity.

Mayor Watts Delivers her 2011 State of the City Address

By: Tara Foslien On April 12, the City of Surrey will move forward with its innovative and aggressive economic policies as it creates Metro Vancouver’s second downtown core, announced Mayor Dianne Watts in her State of the City Address in Sheraton Hotel Guilford. The City will continue to complete the significant infrastructure projects included in the Build Surrey program, the most comprehensive construction program in Surrey’s history. The program contains $2.8 billion in construction, including $800 million in new community projects and $2 billion worth of facilities being built in partnership with other levels of government. The City will shape the future of Surrey through innovative clean energy initiatives and by advocating for the

creation of light rail rapid transit to connect its town centres. “Surrey has repeatedly been named the best place in B.C. to invest and was recently recognized as the best place to find a job in the Lower Mainland,” says Mayor Watts. “We are re-defining Surrey and creating B.C.’s next metropolitan core by fostering a strong investment climate and implementing innovative social, economic and community initiatives for our residents and businesses.” Mayor Watts highlighted the successful programs that have been developed over the past five years including the Economic Investment Action Plan, Sustainability Charter, Housing Action Plan, and the Child & Youth Friendly

City Strategy. The Mayor also unveiled the Crime Reduction Strategy Progress Report Card, which highlighted the 2007-2010 achievements from Surrey’s Crime Reduction Strategy. “Creating the right social fabric sets the foundation for a strong economy and makes it possible to effect real and lasting change,” says Mayor Watts. “Residents and businesses should be proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish together. Surrey saw over $1 billion in construction activity in 2010, the crime rate is at a ten-year low, and since 2009, we’ve helped 356 people get off the street and into permanent housing with the supports they need.” The City is focussed on supporting the expansion and investment in clean technology industries, and developing a clean tech hub of businesses in Surrey. To demonstrate its commitment to sustainability, in 2010, the City developed a Corporate Emissions Action Plan, became one of the few municipal recipients of a Fleet Gold Level rating, and started constructing the city’s first district energy system in City Centre to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The City is also moving forward with plans to build a biofuel facility to convert green waste into fuel, which would then be used to power vehicles, including the City’s garbage trucks. Last year, the City planted over 12,400 trees, spent $30 million on new parkland and natural area preservation, set aside 110 acres of parkland and began work on the Surrey Bend Regional Park. Surrey now has 6,400 acres of parkland and protected open spaces, as well 1,400 acres of provincial parks, wildlife areas and regional parks. The City continues to create a connected green network of trails and paths throughout the city and is currently developing 29 kilometres of pedestrian and cycling pathways, 28 km of park paths and 92 km of on-street bike lanes. “Transportation is critically important as we

shape growth in our town centres. In order to create healthy communities, we need to provide safe and accessible walking and cycling opportunities. We also need to provide alternatives to vehicle transportation and are actively advocating for TransLink to build light rail rapid transit in Surrey. At-grade rail is cost-effective and efficient, and would not only create a new transportation option, but also increase economic development and improve quality of life.” The Mayor also highlighted her recent business mission to India, which resulted in the City signing an economic agreement with City of Jalandher. In total, four Memorandums of Understanding and a number of deals were completed or moved to final incubation stage. The City also helped successfully advocate for India to accept Canadian cedar imports into the country - all three cedar species have now been approved. The India business mission plan was conceived at the 2010 Surrey Regional Economic Summit, which focussed on the economic powerhouses of India and China. The keynote speakers for the 2011 Summit on October 20th are Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. “Our Economic Summit is recognized as a forum for the exchange of economic ideas that is unrivalled in BC,” says Watts. “The former Presidents will provide their very unique and timely perspectives on a broad range of economic and business trends.” 2010 was also a successful year for celebration and the arts in Surrey. Surrey’s 2010 Celebration Site won “Best Public Entertainment Event” at the B.C. Event Awards, and Fusion Festival won the 2010 “Best Cultural Event in Canada” award at the Canadian Event Industry Awards Gala in Toronto. “Surrey is becoming known as the destination for fun, community festivals. This year we will kick off our inaugural Party for the Planet which will celebrate our sus-

tainability initiatives and environmental partnerships,” says Watts. Party for the Planet takes place on April 15th and 16th at Central City Plaza.“This is an exciting time for Surrey as we build a city from the ground up. We will continue to be an economic generator for the Region, as well as a city where you can get a

great education, get a great paying job, and raise your family in a strong, vibrant community,” add Mayor Watts. The Build Surrey program is being funded through infrastructure fees, secondary suite fees, contributions from the Surrey City Development Corporation, gaming revenue, grant money, leaseholds, parking fee revenues from the City’s new parking authority and reserve money. The City is not raising taxes to pay for the program.

Election Campaign Highlights from Miracle’s lens

On April 17, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff with Liberal candidates Sukh Dhailwal, Pam Dhanoa, Shinder Purewal and Hardy Staub met with community members during multicultural media roundtable in Grand Taj Surrey.

Liberals could still govern if Harper wins minority: Ignatieff Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff says he would be willing to form a government according to parliamentary rules if Stephen Harper wins the most seats in the election but fails to win the confidence of the House of Commons. "If the Governor General wants to call on other parties, or myself, for example, to try and form a government, then we try to form a government," Ignatieff told CBC's Peter Mansbridge in an exclusive interview Tuesday afternoon. "That's exactly how the rules work and what I'm trying to say to Canadians is, I understand the rules, I respect the rules, I will follow them to the letter and I'm not going to form a coalition. What I'm prepared to do is talk to Mr. Layton or Mr. Duceppe or even Mr. Harper and say, 'We have an issue, and here's the plan that I want to put before Parliament, this is the budget I would bring in,' and then we take it from there." The statement is the closest Ignatieff has come to describing how he could become prime

minister since his vow on the first day of the campaign renouncing a coalition with the NDP and the Bloc Québécois. Ignatieff, who had signed on to form a coalition with the NDP supported by the Bloc when thenLiberal leader Stéphane Dion had worked out an arrangement three years ago, told Mansbridge he later rejected the idea because it wasn't in the interest of Canadians. "I could be sitting here and talking to you as prime minister and chose not to do that because I felt that it wasn't in the national interest," he said. "So I rejected the coalition in 2008 and I've gone into this election in 2011 firmly excluding the coalition. "Mr. Harper had discussions about a coalition in 2004 with Mr. Duceppe and Mr. Layton. Not me." Shortly after the interview, the Tories shot back, issuing a statement that said Ignatieff "made clear this is his agenda to become prime minister, even if he loses the election." "Michael Ignatieff ’s ambition to be prime minister trumps

everything: our economic recovery, what‘s best for families, even how Canadians vote," the Conservatives said. Ignatieff also denied he has started running a negative campaign against Harper, saying the question boils down to whether you can trust the Conservative leader with power. The Liberals were forced to amend an antiHarper attack ad on health care after it was determined a quote was wrongly attributed to Harper. "I think that we have to be tough, I think we have to frame up the issues. I think that Canadians want to know what the choices are on May 2," Ignatieff said of the ads his party is running. "We feel a strong campaign here is essential." Mansbridge pressed Ignatieff about some of the campaign ads the Liberals are running, specifically ones that say Stephen Harper wants "absolute power." Ignatieff said Harper shut down Parliament twice and has been held in contempt of Parliament. He said the important question of the cam-

paign is: "Can you trust this guy with power?" "If you can't trust this man with democracy, you can't trust him with anything else," Ignatieff said. Ignatieff 's sitdown discussion with Mansbridge is part of a series of one-on-one interviews with the party leaders. Harper has agreed to an interview at a time that has yet to be determined. During the interview, Ignatieff brushed off any similarities his party's platform may have with the NDP, saying that unlike the Liberals, the NDP's costing table does not add up. But the NDP was quick to offer a rebuttal, saying their platform is not only costed, but also third-party validated. "Unlike the Liberals’ platform, it doesn’t make multi-billion uncosted promises (e.g., HST payment to Québec, prescription drugs, high speed rail), nor does it ignore two years," the New Democrats said in a statement. "And unlike the Conservatives, it doesn’t contain $11 billion of unidentified cuts." Source: CBC News

Harper brushes off idea of resignation if Tories fail to win majority S t e p h e n Harper is brushing off speculation that he might step down if t h e Conservative fail again to win a majority government. Harper argued Tuesday that the only two options following the May 2 election are a Conservative majority or an arrangement of some sort among the Liberals, NDP and Bloc Quebecois. NDP Leader Jack Layton told CBC's the National in an interview broadcast on Monday that Harper should have the first shot at forming

government if the Tories win the most seats. But Layton hasn't ruled out taking part in a coalition if the Conservatives can't maintain the confidence of the House of Commons. Harper has often talked about the grinding effect on the country of holding four elections in seven years. But on Tuesday, he declined to directly answer a question on whether he would step down if the Tories don't win the majority he has explicitly requested on the campaign trail. Harper reiterated his position that he would accept any mandate his party is given by the Canadian people, even if that means another minority. "You know I'm not going to take the bite on that one," Harper told reporters after being asked if he'd step aside if the Conservatives fall short of a majority. "We're in the election to win, and all I can say is serving my party and serving Canadians in

my capacity as leader and prime minister is a great honour, it will always be a great honour." The Conservative leader said being prime minister has been the greatest experience of his life. "Occasionally, yeah, you complain about some things. None of it compares to the tremendous opportunity I've had to do this," he said. "There are (not) many other countries in the world, even many democratic countries, where a person from my kind of background, genuine middle class background, could be entrusted with this kind of responsibility by the Canadian people." Harper has led his party in election campaigns in 2004, 2006, 2008 and now 2011. He has repeatedly suggested Canadians are tired of the constant campaigning. He looked somewhat tired himself on Tuesday, and stumbled over some of the words in his speech,

despite using a teleprompter. At one point, he mixed up the words "island" and "world," saying "this country is the closest thing the island — the world has — to an island of stability and security." Harper said he honestly believes the Liberals, NDP and Bloc will team up to defeat another Conservative minority. "Obviously, we think such an alternative would be unstable, would not have a clear direction for the country, particularly on the economy," he said. "In fact, on the economy the only thing they would be able to agree on are some pretty bad ideas, so we think these are the realistic choices before Canadians. I don't want Canadians to wake up and find they ended up with something very different from what they thought they were voting for." Harper spoke to reporters at the recently built Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute, which conducts health research. He reiterated his party's promise to invest $100 million to create a fund to support brain research and neuroscience. Source: Vancouver Sun

Stephen Harper wages late-stage battle for Atlantic Canada Stephen Harper is making a late-game push for votes in Atlantic Canada, one of the regions he believes could hold the key to securing a majority government. But Mr. Harper faces a real challenge in this foray – convincing Atlantic Canadians he’s got their best interests at heart. It’s a region that’s been cool to him in the past. Mr. Harper was shut out of Newfoundland and Labrador in 2008, and he’s still fighting lingering resentment about his comments as Canadian Alliance leader in 2002, when he said a “a culture of defeat” holds back Atlantic Canada. Still, there are reasons to believe Atlantic Canadians

might be more sympathetic this time. The Conservatives, who held only one-third of the region’s seats before dissolution, have worked hard since Week 1 of the campaign to court disaffected Atlantic Canadians, starting with a promise to co-sign a $4.2-billion loan for a power project that would benefit both Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador. As the campaign enters its final stretch, the race is boiling down to a handful of key regional battles, including B.C.’s Lower Mainland, Southern Ontario and Atlantic Canada. Source: Globe and Mail

Christians and Muslims Put Hands Together to Pray for Bahrain By: Sr. Eman al-Atar On the 16th of April, for the first time in Vancouver city, representatives from a number of lower mainland churches and mosques gathered together at the Vancouver Art Gallery for a public prayer for peace. They prayed for the oppressed people all over the world and specifically for the people of Bahrain. This gathering was unique of its kind as brethren from the Muslim and Christian communities came together to promote what is common in their faiths, calling for peace and praying for the oppressed, well aware that they prescribe to differing theologies and differing philosophies. The event commenced with a recitation from the Qur’an by Maulana Abdul Lateef Numani and Mohtadi Al-Khaliq followed by a recitation from the Bible by Pastor Tim Kuepfer. This recitation was followed by talks on the common vision for peace and justice shared by the two faiths. Pastor Henry Krause from the Langley

Mennonite Church, shed light on the Christian vision and desire to see peace flourish around the world, and particularly at this time in the nations of the Middle East. On the other hand, Shaykh Murtaza Bachoo, Imam of Az-Zahraa Islamic Center, explained that religion need not be a source of conflict, and instead it can be a source of unity, cooperation and understanding. Shaykh Bachoo continued to explain that what is common to both religions is the desire for peace in the world, in Libya, Yemen and especially in Bahrain. It evokes Muslim and Christian emotions alike,

he said, when they see innocent people being tortured, jailed and killed in Bahrain. It evokes our emotions alike when we hear of medics being beaten, hospitals being closed and innocent people being denied some of their basic necessities. The subsequent speaker was Sr. Laya Behbahani, who gave an informative speech about a vision for peace

MIR A LE

and reconciliation from the Holy Qur’an as she described Islam’s promotion of peace and tolerance of other faiths and its respect of humanity as a whole. Following that, Pastor Tim Kuepfer described the Bible’s vision for peace and reconciliation. The program culminated with prayers for peace by a number of Christian Pastors and Muslim spiritual leaders. The prayers focused on the innocent people who are being brutally killed, tortured and compelled to leave their houses and countries, all prayed for them to be granted peace and justice.

Workshop on Muslim Culture Awareness and Diversity By: David Ali The first series of innovative workshops designed to create awareness and provide a better understanding of Islam and the cultural diversity of Muslims for the BC Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) has wrapped up with the last session held on April 12 at Masjid Al Salaam and Education Centre in Burnaby. Approximately 500 MCFD social workers and staff have participated in the 5 workshops which were organized by the MCFD Muslim Advisory Committee. Launched in November 2010, the success of this educational and community endeavor has led to recommendations that all MCFD social workers and staff attend such workshops in the future. After David Ali (Muslim Advisory Committee Public Relations representative) welcomed the participants to the fifth workshop, Farida Bano Ali (chairperson of the Muslim Advisory Committee) expressed that the cooperation between MCFD staff and the Muslim community has benefited the community. She confirmed

that the Muslim Advisory Committee intends to organize more public seminars in various local mosques providing encouragement and information on becoming foster parents. Regular workshop presenters Imams Oves and Anees Wahab outlined the basic tenets of Islam. Imraz Asin, a BC Muslim Association Funeral Director gave in depth information on Muslim burial practices and protocols which was greatly appreciated by the social workers and community nurses present as some have been involved in cases dealing with the deaths of Muslim children in the community as well as terminally ill Muslim children

at Canucks House. Sr. Palwasha, who is currently working with Muslim Advisory Committee, highlighted the challenges of new immigrants and refugees in the local BC Afghan community relating to family and children issues in particular. Susan Waldron, MCFD Director of Quality Assurance Practice, emphasized the importance of these workshops. Pastor Scott Turnbrook

representing the United Church in Burnaby endorsed the positive interaction between the Christian and Muslim communities. Nur Buksh brought the workshop to a close with a vote of thanks to all participants and speakers. A special vote of thank was given to the catering team of the Burnaby Women’s Branch and also to Masjid Al Salaam for use of their beautiful facility.

Allama Mohammad Iqbal, a great Philosopher Iqbal was born in the Punjab on February 22, 1873. His ancestors, who were Kashmiri Brahmins, had embraced Islam two hundred years earlier. Iqbal’s own father was a devout Muslim with Sufistic bent of mind. Primary Education He received his early education in Sialkot. After passing the entrance examination, he joined Intermediary College. Mir Hassan, a great oriental scholar, had a special aptitude for imparting his own literary taste and to his students. Under his influence, Iqbal was drawn towards Islamic studies, which he regarded to be an outstanding favor that he could not forget it all his life. Higher Education Passing on to the Government College of Lahore, Iqbal did his graduation with English Literature, Philosophy and Arabic as his subjects. At the college he met Prof. Arnold and Sir Abdul Qadir. Iqbal’s poem, Chand (moon) and other early poems appeared in the journal (which belonged to Sir Abdul Qadir) in 1901 and were acclaimed by critics as cutting a new path in Urdu poetry. It did not take him long to win recognition as a rising star on the firmament of Urdu literature. In the mean time he had done his MA in Philosophy and was appointed as a Lecturer in History, Philosophy and Political science at Oriental College, Lahore. He then moved to Government College to teach Philosophy and English Literature. Wherever Iqbal worked or thought his versatility and scholarship made a deep impression on those around him. In Europe Iqbal proceeded to Europe for higher studies in 1905 and stayed there for three years. He took the Honors Degree in Philosophy and taught Arabic at the Cambridge University in the absence of Prof. Arnold. From England, he went to Germany to do

his doctorate in Philosophy from Munich and then returned to London to qualify for the bar. He also served as a teacher in the London school of Commerce and passed the Honors Examination in Economics and Political Science. During his stay in Europe Iqbal not only read voraciously but also wrote and lectured on Islamic subjects which added to his popularity and fame in literary circles. Back in India Iqbal returned to India in 1908. The poet had won all these academic laurels by the time he was 32 or 33. He practiced as a lawyer from 1908 to 1934, when ill health compelled him to give up his practice. In fact, his heart was not in it and he devoted more time to philosophy and literature than to legal profession. He attended the meetings of Anjuman Himayat-I-Islam regularly at Lahore. The epoch making poems, Shikwa and Jawabe-Shikwa, which he read out in the annual convention of it one year after another, sparkled with the glow of his genius and made him immensely popular. They became the national songs of Millet. Iqbal’s other poems Tarana-e-Hind (The Indian anthem) and Tarana-e-Milli (the Muslim Anthem) also became very popular among masses and used to be sung as symbols of National or Muslim identity at public meetings. The spirit of Change The Balkan wars and the Battle of Tripoli, in 1910, shook Iqbal powerfully and inflicted a deep wound upon his heart. In his mood of anger and frustration, he

wrote a number of stirring poems, which together with portraying the anguish of Muslims were severely critical of the West. The spirit of change is evident in poems like Bilad-e-Islamia (the lands of Islam), Wataniat (Nationalism), Muslim, Fatima Bint Abdullah (who was killed in the siege of Cyrainca, Siddiq, Bilal, Tahzib-e-Hazir (Modern civilization) and Huzoor-eRisalat Maab Mein (in the presence of Sacred Prophet). In these poems, Iqbal deplores the attitude of Muslim leaders who lay a claim to Islamic leadership and yet are devoid of a genuine spiritual attachment to the blessed Prophet. The turning point in Iqbal’s Life Iqbal was shaken by the tragic events of World War I and the disaster the Muslims had to face. The genius had passed through the formative period. He had attained maturity as a poet, thinker, seer and crusader who could read the signs of tomorrow in the happenings of today, make predictions, present hard facts and unravel abstruse truths through the medium of poetry and ignite the flame of faith, Selfhood and courage by his own intensity of feeling and force of expression. Khizr-e-Raah (The Guide) occupies the place of pride among the poems he wrote during this period. Bang-e-Dara (The caravan bell) published in 1929 has held a place of honor in Urdu poetry and world poetry. Iqbal preferred Persian for poetic expression because its circle was wider than that of Urdu in Muslim India. His Persian works, Asrar-e-khudi (Secrets of the self), Rumuz-e-Bekhudi (Mysteries of Selflessness), Payam-e-Mashriq

In 1930, he was elected to preside over at the annual session of Muslim League. In his presidential address at Allahabad, Iqbal for the first time introduced the idea of Pakistan. In 1930-31, he attended the Round Table conference, which met in London to frame a constitu-

ICC to reconsider 10-team format

The International Cricket Council (ICC) have announced they are to reconsider proposals to streamline the number of teams participating in the Cricket World Cup. Under plans announced during an ICC summit in Mumbai earlier this month, participation at the 2015 and 2019 World Cups will be restricted to just the 10 full ICC member teams. However, protests from second-tier teams furious at being excluded from the 2015 World Cup have caused ICC president Sharad Pawar to request the executive board to reconsider the move. "I have given this matter further serious thought and will request the board to consider this topic once more,'' Pawar said in a statement. "I can understand the views of the Associates and Affiliates and ICC will seek to deal with this issue in the best way possible.'' Fourteen teams competed in this

year's World Cup co-hosted by eventual champions India, runners-up Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The tournament, which ran between February 19 and April 2, featured numerous group matches in a format that many feared was vulnerable to corruptions. While the decision to reduce teams at future cups was welcomed by the likes of Australia captain Ricky Ponting and Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi, it was roundly criticised by Associate members who felt it was a step backward in the ICC's bid to expand the reach of the sport. "I've no desire to be diplomatic as I think the ideas are bloody ridiculous,'' Kenya's chief executive Tom Sears told The Wisden Cricketer magazine. "The president of the ICC (Pawar) says he wants to grow the game but then wants to contract the 50-over World Cup to exclude the Associates,'' he said. "Not to let anyone

else in is scandalous. It's all about money, power and votes - and that's not good for cricket.'' The length and format of the showpiece event - which lasted 43 days this year and featured several one-sided matches when Test playing nations took on the second-tier sides - was criticised by many fans and pundits. By restricting the 2015 event to only the 10 full members, the ICC appeared to have addressed both issues. The governing body felt the non-Test playing nations would be better off competing in the Twenty20 World Cup. Ireland were particularly annoyed with the proposal because they have been ranked 10th in the one-day world rankings for most of the last four years, ahead of full

member nation Zimbabwe. Ireland pulled off one the shocks of the most recent tournament when they came from behind to beat England by three wickets in a thrilling group-stage encounter. Irish Sports Minister Leo Varadkar said such matches proved that smaller nations deserved a place at international cricket's showpiece event. "This 'closed shop' approach cannot be good for the game, and appears to fly in the face of the sacred values that cricket has espoused for so long namely fair play, sportsmanship and camaraderie," he said. Associate members the Netherlands and Canada also qualified and played in this year's World Cup. The ICC's 10 full members were Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe. Source: Al-Jazeera

Be There For Yourself Shabnam Khan (M.P.C.P., R.P.C.) Family Counsellor It’s sad, but of all the people in our lives, perhaps the person most of us are the hardest on, pay the least attention to, and shower the least amount of love is, ourselves. When we are kind, and take time for ourselves, we have something left over other people. If we don’t love ourselves, we can’t offer much in the way of love to others. You can become kinder to yourself in two ways. First, avoid sabotaging yourself with negativity and self-loathing by indulging in self-deprecating and self-defeating statements. Thoughts such as “I can’t do it” and “I haven’t been a very good friend (partner, parent, child, etc.)” When you start paying attention on a regular basis to what you are thinking, you may be shocked at how often you think negatively about yourself. When you catch

yourself thinking negatively, drop the thought from your mind and then pat yourself on the back. All of us have innate self-esteem that kicks in as soon as we stop being hard on ourselves. Ask yourself the question, “Am I being as kind to myself as I would be to a good friend? If the answer is NO, it’s time to ask, “Why?” and change your priorities. The second way to become kinder to yourself is to reserve time in your day or week just for yourself! The specific form of the kindness isn’t as important as the kindness itself. Whether it’s time spent in quiet reflection, reading, prayer or medication, regular exercise, making a trip to your favorite bookstore or anything you like. It’s important that you find time to do nice things just for yourself. Acknowledge that you deserve special treatment and that you have earned the kindness that you undoubtedly try so hard to give to others. Far from being selfish, your loving-kindness toward yourself will trigger your natural instinct to want to give that love back to others. When it comes to kindness, it all starts with you. This easy change is well worth the effort! shabnamsk@hotmail.com

Iqbal : Continued from pg 24 productive. He kept in touch with every year rule over Spain were revived in his mind and his emotions were aroused by what he saw. Meeting with Mussolini In Italy Iqbal was received by Mussolini who had read some of his works and was aquatinted with his philosophy. They had long meetings and talked freely to each other. The Universities of Cambridge, Rome and Madrid and the Roman Royal society organized meetings in his honor. On his way back he also went to Jerusalem to attend the International Conference of Motamar-i-Isalami. In Afghanistan At the invitation of King Nadir Shah, Iqbal visited Afghanistan in 1932. The king received the poet with great honor and met hi privately, as well during which he laid bare his heart. The two talked and wept. Iqbal’s Death The last phase of Iqbal’s life was embittered with constant illness. But as regards

question of the day and continued composing beautiful verses. A few minutes before his death he recited these touching lines: The departed melody may return or not! The zephyr from Hijaz may blow again or not! The days of this Faqir has come to an end, Another seer may come or not! Although Iqbal’s was long and protracted the end was sudden and verypeaceful. He breathed his last in the early hours of April 21, 1938, in the arms of his old and devoted servant, leaving behind a host of mourners all over the Islamic world. There was a faint smile playing on his lips, which irresistibly reminded one of the last criterions, which he laid down for a truthful Muslim. I tell you the sign of a Mumin- When death comes there is smile on his lips. Note: The above biography is a summarized version from Glory of Iqbal by Syed Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi

Youth Symposium

By: Shuaib Yunush “C is for caring, caring for all”, was the first line of a chant performed by BC Muslim School Grade 2 and 3 students at the 2011 Inter-Faith Youth Symposium. Their performance outlined the qualities of compassion that should be practiced by everyone. They spent many weeks rehearsing and memorizing their performance. The students attended the preliminary and final rounds in Richmond. The Grade 2 and 3 students were in competition with

over 10 other schools and organizations. Masha Allah! The performance received two perfect scores and won 2nd place overall. The students were ecstatic and thankful for their well-deserved recognition. Then he became one of those who believed (in the Islamic Monotheism) and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion.
