PM returns to Ottawa after majority win

PM Harper returns to Parliament with a majority Government The Consevatives, led by Stephen Haper, won 167 seats in the federal elections held on May 2 and will be forming a majority government in the next few weeks. In a surprising turn of events, NDP won 102 seats leaving the Liberals behind with 34 seats, and became the official opposition. The voter turn-out was 61.4% this year, a slight improvement from 2008.

Bin Laden 'was unarmed' when shot dead Osama bin Laden was unarmed when he was confronted and shot dead by US forces at his Pakistani hideout, a White House spokesman has said. Jay Carney said that the US was considering whether to release photos of bin Laden after he was killed on Sunday but that the photos were "gruesome" and could be inflammatory. The director of the CIA told NBC News on Tuesday that the a photo showing bin Laden dead will ultimately be released. "The government obviously has been talking about how best to do this, but I don't think there was any question that ultimately a photograph would be presented to the public," Leon Panetta, the head of the US spy agency, said according to a transcript of the television interview. Carney said one of bin Laden's wives had tried to rush the US forces and was shot in the leg. He said Bin Laden had resisted capture and was shot and killed. He did not explain how bin Laden had resisted. The White House spokesman said high temperatures had caused one of the helicopters carrying the US forces to make a hard landing at the compound in Abbottabad, a town about two hours north of Islamabad, the capital. The US commandos swept through the massive compound, handcuffing those they encountered with plastic zip ties and pressed on in pursuit of their target, code-named 'Geronimo'. Barack Obama, the US president, and a small team of his officials watched the operation in real time from the White House, but the mission was not run from there, Carney said. After killing bin Laden, the US team quickly swept the compound for useful intelligence, making off with a cache Continued on pg 5

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has returned to Ottawa a day after Canadians elected his Conservative Party to form its first majority government. Cheering supporters greeted Harper and his wife Laureen, their children Ben and Rachel, as well as his campaign staff as the Conservative plane landed at Ottawa airport Tuesday evening from his home riding in Calgary. Speaking at a news conference earlier in the day in Calgary, hailed Quebec's "shift to federalism" in Monday night's election, which reduced the oncedominant Bloc QuĂŠbĂŠcois to four seats in the province. The prime minister added he is disappointed that his majority government does not have a larger foothold in Quebec, as most of the Bloc losses came from an unprecedented surge by Jack Layton's New Democrats. "Despite the fact that we did not make any gains, of course, as a Canadian and a federalist, I'm encouraged by the collapse of the Bloc," he said. Harper won 167 seats in Monday night's election and will form his first majority government. He won minority governments in 2006 and 2008. The Conservatives won 39.6 per cent of the vote. However, the party only won six of Quebec's 75 seats. "I'm disappointed, but I'm not discouraged," Harper said. The Conservative leader said he would not appoint an unelected person to his cabinet, which he did in 2006. Harper said he would build his cabinet from the six Quebec MPs who won on Monday. "We did win a number of seats for experienced MPs who will have a significant place within our government," Harper said. "I would have hoped for more, but we do have significant representation there, and we will certainly be listening to what the people of Quebec say over the next four years." Harper received calls of congratulations on Tuesday from U.S. President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron. During his telephone conversation with Obama, Harper congratulated the U.S. president and military servicemen on this week's raid in Pakistan that killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. Obama also renewed his commitment to the border security framework agreement the two leaders announced in February, the Prime Minister's Office said. Harper told Cameron he looked forward to seeing the British leader at the upcoming G8 summit later this month. The two leaders also discussed the situation in Libya, the PMO said. The Harper majority government will

Whole world shares Osama blame: Gilani

Pakistan’s prime minister defended his country’s ‘failure’ to spot that Osama bin Laden had been hiding out in a luxury compound near Islamabad, saying that fighting terrorism was the whole world’s responsibility. “There is an intelligence failure of the whole world, not just Pakistan alone,” Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani told reporters in Paris on Wednesday where he met French President Nicholas Sarkozy. “Certainly we have intelligence sharing with the rest of the world, including the United States, so if somebody points out that there are ... lapses from the Pakistan side, that means there are lapses from the whole world,” he said. Gilani said Pakistan had paid a heavy price for its involvement in the US-led ‘war

on terrorism’, with more than 30,000 Pakistanis killed since the fighting in Afghanistan began. “Security and the fight against extremism or terrorism is not the job of only one nation,” Gilani said. Pakistan needed ‘the support of the entire world’ to eradicate terrorism, he added. “We are fighting and paying a heavy price to combat terrorism and extremism... fighting not only for Pakistan but for the peace, prosperity and progress of the whole world.” Asked whether there would be an official investigation, Gilani said ‘that must have already been ordered’. He said he had been in power only since 2008 and questioned what had happened in the past seven years. “In spite of having best intelligence agencies (they) could not find him,” Gilani said. Gilani, speaking to representatives of French employers’ group Medef, sought to convince business leaders considering investment in Pakistan that the country was plagued by what he called ‘exaggerated’ and ‘misleading’ perceptions. “Today, through your forum, I want to convince the world that instead of giving negative messages for Pakistan, rather we should send positive messages to Pakistan,” Gilani said. “We should have positive messages because no one, no single nation, alone can fight terrorism. Pakistan is a part of the solution and not a part of the problem,” he said. “Instead of a blame game, we should respect what Pakistan has done in the war against terror,” Gilani said. To a question whether the United States had sought Pakistan’s permission prior to the raid, he said, “When we meet them we would ask them.” Agencies. Source: Daily Times

MQM decides to rejoin federal cabinet ‘in national interest’ Deputy Convener of Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) Coordination Committee, Dr Farooq Sattar, on Wednesday announced his party’s decision to rejoin the federal cabinet in the country’s larger interest. He made this announcement while talking to newsmen at the Sindh Governor’s House. He was accompanied by the Federal Interior Minister, Rehman Malik, Governor of Sindh, Dr Ishratul Ebad, Adil Siddiqi and others. Speaking on the occasion, Rehman Malik welcomed the MQM’s decision to rejoin the federal cabinet. Farooq Sattar said a joint meeting of his party’s Coordination Committee in Karachi and London was held during the day and decided that the MQM would rejoin the federal cabinet. He recalled that a five-member delegation of his party had held meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani during the last few days in Islamabad. Following the meetings of his party’s leaders with the president and the prime minister, Dr Farooq Sattar informed, “We expressed our reservations during the meetings.” “We were given assurances that our reservations would be addressed.” He said his party’s leadership conveyed their reservations with regard to issues like corruption, law and order, economic situation and other important matters. Farooq Sattar said, “We have been given assurances that concrete steps will be taken to remove reservations expressed by our party and it will be given a sense of par-

ticipation in decisions and policy making.” Farooq Sattar said the party pursued the politics of reconciliation in the broader interest of nation and the country. He praised the Federal Interior Minister, Rehman Malik, for playing a pivotal role in reconciliation with MQM and hoped the past mistakes would not be repeated. The government has also vowed to put an end to target killings in Karachi, he further stressed demanding effective steps be taken up to stem the extortion mafia activities. Earlier, Malik, along with the Sindh Governor, Dr Ishratul Ebad, visited the MQM headquarters and condoled the deaths of ex-MPA Liaquat Ali Qureshi and member of Karachi Tanzimi Committee Farooq Beg. Rehman also condemned the killings of both the MQM leaders with the party chief, Atlaf Hussain, and members of the Coordination Committee. He said that killings of MQM leaders was a conspiracy to disturb peace of the city. “However, with the support of coalition partners such elements would not succeed in their evil designs,” he said. Members of the Coordination Committee Kunwar Khalid Younus, Naik Muhammad, Dr Nusrat, Syed Mustafa Kamal, Yousuf Shahwani, Kaif-ul-Wara, Salim Tajik, Shahid Latif, Ashfaq Mangi, Saif Yar Khan, Babar Ghauri and Adil Siddiqui were also present on the occasion. Saudi Arabia tightens media laws

Saudi Arabia has tightened its control of the media, threatening fines and closure of publications that jeopardised its stability or offended clerics, state media reported. The

tighter media controls were set out in amendments to the media law issued as a royal order. They also banned stirring up sectarianism and "anything that causes harm to the general interest of the country". "All those responsible for publication are banned from publishing ... anything contradicting Islamic Sharia Law; anything inciting disruption of state security or public order or anything serving foreign interests that contradict national interests," the state news agency SPA said. Saudi Arabia, which is a major US ally, follows an austere version of Sunni Islam and does not tolerate any form of dissent. It has no elected parliament and no political parties. It has managed to

stave off the unrest which has rocked the Arab world, toppling leaders in Tunisia and Egypt. Almost no Saudis in major cities answered a Facebook call for protests on March 11, in the face of a massive security presence around the country. Minority Shias have staged a number of street marches in the eastern province, where most of Saudi Arabia's oil fields are located. Shias are said to represent between 10 and 15 per cent of the country's 18 million people and have long complained of discrimination, a charge the government denies. Clerics played a major role in banning protests by issuing a religious edict which said that demonstrations are against Islamic law. In

turn, the royal order banned the "infringement of the reputation or dignity, the slander or the personal offence of the Grand Mufti or any of the country's senior clerics or statesmen". King Abdullah has strengthened the security and religious police forces, which played a major role in banning protests in the kingdom. According to the amendment published on Friday, punishments for breaking the media laws include a fine of half a million riyals ($133,000) and the shutting down of the publication that published the violation. It also allows for banning the writer from contributing to any media. Source: Al-Jazeera

Israel withholds Palestinian cash transfer Israel will hold up an $89 million cash transfer to the Palestinian Authority [PA] planned for this week because of a new unity deal between rival Palestinian factions. Israel threatened to impose sanctions last week in response to the surprise announcement of a unity deal between the Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip. "Israel wants assurances that any money transferred to the Palestinians will not reach the militant Hamas organisation, which is set to become part of the Palestinian government," Yuval Steinitz, the Israeli finance minister, said on Sunday. "I think the burden of proof is on the Palestinians, to make it certain, to give us guarantees that money delivered by Israel is not going to the Hamas, is not going to a terrorist organisation, is not going to finance terror operations against Israeli citizens." According to a report in the newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, Israeli officials would also cancel talks with the PA aimed at updating the tax transfer mechanism which provides it with $1bn to $1.4bn annually - two-thirds of PA's budget. Israel collects some tax and customs fees for the Palestinians under the peace agreements of the 1990s. Israel has held up cash transfers several times in the past decade, citing concerns that the money was being used to fund attacks against Israelis. There was no

immediate Palestinian reaction to the Israeli move. The deal signed between Fatah, the party of Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, and Hamas is meant to lead immediately to a transitional government and new elections within one year. The Israeli government said the deal rules out the renewal of deadlocked peace talks and threatens IsraeliPalestinian security cooperation in the West Bank. The agreement "should worry not only all Israeli citizens but all those across the world who want to see peace between us and our Palestinian neighbours", Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister said on Sunday. Israel has also expressed its concern to the UN about the deal. Ehud Barak, the defence minister, on Saturday told Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary general, of "Israel's concern" over the unity accord struck on Wednesday between Hamas and Fatah, according to a statement. Storm death toll continues to rise in US South At least 350 people were killed, thousands were injured and hundreds are still missing in the aftermath of the April 27 tornadoes that tore through seven southern US states. The death toll, expected to rise in the coming days, is the highest inflicted by tornadoes since 1936.

UN: Libyan refugee crisis worsening The UN has said that almost 40,000 people have fled fighting in Libya's Western Mountains region in the past month. Thousands of ethnic Berbers from Libya fled into Tunisia after a brief hiatus in their exodus last week because of fighting between Libyan government troops and opposition forces for control of a border crossing point. "This past weekend, more than 8,000 people, most of them ethnic Berbers, arrived in Dehiba in southern Tunisia. Most are women and children," a UNHCR spokesperson said on Tuesday. UNHCR staff in Dehiba said the situation of the refugees was being made worse by a violent sandstorm that has battered the area, destroying hundreds of tents and two huge portable warehouses. UNHCR and its partners said they are struggling to maintain nearby camps. Antonio Guterres, the UN High Commissioner for refugees, told Al Jazeera that the situation is rapidly getting worse for Libyan refugees. "We have two hot spots - Misurata, where there is no humanitarian access and people are suffering enormously, and the border with Tunisia where there has been a lot of fighting for control of the border," he said. "The situation is becoming extremely dramatic from a humanitarian point of view. The Tunisians have been extremely generous, sharing everything with Libyan refugees but it is extremely difficult to support this population." Control of the Dehiba border crossing has changed hands over the past week as the fighting between Libya's rival sides spilled onto Tunisian territory. Currently, the crossing is under opposition control. Residents of Dehiba town told UNHCR staff they were worried about military activity across the border and feared further skir-

mishes. Meanwhile, people have resumed fleeing Libya by sea to Italy after a 10-day break due to bad weather. Some 3,200 people have arrived on the island of Lampedusa over the past five days, most of them originating from sub-Saharan Africa. This brings the total number of irregular arrivals on Italian territory from Libya since March 26 to more than 8,100. Another 1,132 people have arrived in Malta on boats from Libya since mid-April. The United Nations, Western powers and some Arab states accuse Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi of ordering his security forces to kill hundreds of civilians who rose up in protest against his four-decade rule. Libyan offiicals have denied killing civilians, saying security forces were forced to act against armed gangs and al-Qaeda sympathisers who, they say, are trying to seize control of the oil exporting power. Meanwhile, a car bomb in the opposition stronghold of Benghazi lightly injured two people, doctors in the city said on Tuesday. The explosion, the first of its kind in the city since the uprising against Gaddafi began in February, prompted antigovernment demonstrators, some of them armed, to come out onto the streets, chanting anti-Gaddafi slogans and brandishing the weapons. The explosion apparently blew out windows in a high-rise building near the Benghazi courthouse, which has served as the rebels' headquarters. Early on Wednesday, explosions were heard in eastern Tripoli after jets were heard flying over the city. NATO has been carrying out a series of air strikes against targets in the capital it says are part of Gaddafi's command and control structure. Source: Al-Jazeera

French blame immigrants for integration failure: poll The International Committee of the Red Cross has urged Syria to lift restrictions on access to casualties in the besieged city of Deraa, amid mounting international pressure on the Syrian regime to end its violent crackdown on protests. Deraa has been the epicentre of antigovernment unrest with protesters demanding an end to Assad's presidency and the Baath Party's near-50-year rule. Soldiers and tanks have been deployed there and in other cities in a security crackdown which activists say has claimed hundreds of lives. "The violence has resulted in a large number of casualties and we fear that if the situation worsens, more lives will be lost," Marianne Gasser, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegation in Damascus, said on Tuesday. "It is urgent that emergency medical services, first aid workers and others performing life saving tasks swiftly reach those in need," she added in a statement. ICRC spokesman Hisham Hassan said the doctors and staff from the agency Syrian Red Crescent and other medical workers needed "immediate access to the injured". "So far we have had restricted access to certain areas, however today we need to have more larger access especially in the south, and here I talk about Deraa," he told journalists. "We are in touch with Syrian authorities on a daily basis but so far what we have been able to get is access probably tomorrow or the day after to cer-

tain hospitals in rural Damascus, but so far no news about Deraa in the south." In a statement released on Tuesday, Amnesty International said it had received "first-hand reports of torture" from those caught up in the crackdown. "Detainees who were recently released told the organization of beatings and harsh conditions in detention, raising fears for the safety of hundreds of others being held, including at least 499 people who were arrested on Sunday in house-to-house raids in the southern town of Deraa," the organisation said. "These disturbing new accounts of detainees being tortured further underscore the need for President Bashar alAssad to put an end to his security forces’ violent onslaught against his own people," said Philip Luther, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa. Syria's government accuses "armed groups and terrorists" of attempting to stir unrest in the country. Syrian security forces swept into the coastal city of Baniyas on Tuesday, a protest leader told the Reuters news agency. "They moved into the main market area. The army has sealed the northern entrance and security forces [sealed] the south," said Anas al-Shughri. "They armed Alawite villages in the hills overlooking Baniyas and we are now facing militias from the east." Source: Al-Jazeera

World population to reach 10.1 billion by 2100 The number of the world's people is expected to grow from nearly 6.9 billion currently to 9.3 billion by 2050 and 10.1 billion by 2100, U.N. population experts said Tuesday. The projections are used by the United Nations and its many agencies to devise and fund programs for problems ranging from climate change to maternal mortality. The U.N. said in a report on world trends released Tuesday that global population is expected to officially hit 6.9 billion on July 1 and 7 billion on Oct. 31. Most of the increase is expected from the world's "high-fertility countries," especially in subSaharan Africa. U.N. Population Division Director Hania Zlotnik said the projections depend on expected fertility rates, with populations in many nations aging as medical advances allow people to live longer and families opt to have fewer children. "The world hasn't collapsed by adding so many people, but most of the people have been added in the poorest countries," Zlotnik noted. "If they don't achieve the lower level of fertility we are projecting they could have serious problems." "A

was always clear that taking bin Laden alive was likely to be difficult, Pillay said, noting that US authorities had stated that they intended to arrest him if possible. "If he was captured and brought before a court, I have no doubt he would have been charged with the most serious crimes, including the mass murder of civilians that took place on 9/11, which were planned and systematic and in my view amounted to crime against humanity," she said. Eric Holder, the US attorney general, defended the US operation against bin Laden as lawful. But some in Europe said bin Laden should have been captured and put on trial. "It was quite clearly a violation of international law," former West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt told German TV. "The operation could also have incalculable consequences in the Arab world in light of all the unrest." Pakistan's foreign ministry also expressed "deep concerns" about what it called an "unauthorised unilateral action". Source: Al-Jazeera

Obama: Continued from pg 1 of computer equipment and documents. All of that is now in Washington and the analysis of it has begun. The US commandos also confiscated phone numbers from bin Laden's body, and those might provide new leads for investigators. The Taliban in Afghanistan said on Tuesday that they questioned whether bin Laden was actually dead. "As the Americans did not provide any acceptable evidence to back up their claim, and as the other aides close to Osama bin Laden have not confirmed or denied the death ... the Islamic Emirate considers any assertion premature," Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, said. The United Nations' top human rights official called on the US on Tuesday to give the UN details about bin Laden's killing and said that all counter-terrorism operations must respect international law. "This was a complex operation and it would be helpful if we knew the precise facts surrounding his killing," Navi Pillay, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said in a statement to the Reuters news agency. It

world of 7 billion is both a challenge and an opportunity," said Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, executive director of the U.N. Population Fund, which supports using population data for anti-poverty programs and policies. "Globally, people are living longer, healthier lives and choosing to have smaller families," Osotimehim said. "But reducing inequities and finding ways to ensure the well-being of people alive today, as well as the generations that follow, will require new ways of thinking and unprecedented global cooperation." The nongovernmental Population Action International called the projections a "wake-up call" for the international community to meet a global demand for family planning options. "As we approach this numerical milestone, it's important to think about the individuals contained within it," said the group's president, Suzanne Ehlers. "Each one will have varying options that determine whether 7 billion becomes 9 billion or more than 11 billion by 2050." Source: Associated Press

Deadly car bomb hits Shia area of Baghdad

A car bomb has torn through a cafe packed with young men watching a football match in a predominantly Shia area of southern Baghdad, the Iraqi capital, killing at least 16 people. It was the first major attack in Iraq since US commandos killed Osama bin Laden, the al-Qaeda leader, in Pakistan. The explosion occurred in Abudsheer, a Shia enclave in the former alQaeda stronghold of Dora, an area of the capital which saw some of the fiercest fighting of the Iraq conflict. "It was a bomb inside a vehicle which resulted in the death and injury of a number of civilians in the district of Abudsheer," said Major-General Qassim al-Moussawi, Baghdad's security spokesman. Al-Qaeda operatives have vowed revenge for bin Laden's death on Sunday. Nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack, Most of the dead and wounded were young people watching a football match, said police and hospital officials. A vendor selling food near the cafe also was among the dead. Many locals were quick to blame al-Qaeda. "This is the cowardly reaction of al-Qaeda after the killing of the big terrorist bin Laden. They intend to do this against such gatherings in Shiite areas," Jasim Hashim, a 20year-old student who lives about 200 metres from the scene of the explosion. He said his parents had refused to let him go out, fearing just such an attack after bin Laden's capture, but one of his close friends was at the cafe and killed in the attack. Iraqi security forces have been on high alert since the killing of bin Laden. Security officials said they expected the organisation's local affiliate to carry out revenge attacks. Violence has fallen sharply in Iraq in recent years from the peak of sectarian violence in 2006-07 but fighters still launch dozens of bombings and other attacks each month. The head of Iraq's grain board was wounded in an apparent assassination attempt on Tuesday when a roadside bomb hit his motorcade in Baghdad. Hassan Ibrahim suffered fractures and other wounds in a blast that killed his driver. He was appointed in March to lead the body that provides Iraq, one of the world's largest grain importers, with wheat and rice for its national food ration programme. POST-ELECTION Accompanying a relative to the high school around the corner two hours before the booths closed was quite an experience. The parking lot was pretty full, the youth were out and about and the signs were clear. People who lived close by were walking together and making it a family leisure activity. The process was simpler than I had imagined, simpler even than voting in American voting booths, I think. Watching my relative mark an X beside a specific candidate in our riding was empowering. I could not wait until I could finally vote. I think I speak for many people when I say that two hours later, we were all very surprised with the results. At first, I thought NDP would win. But then it was obvious that although they won a huge amount of seats, the Conservatives were soaring pretty high. Having heard so much in opposition to Harper, I honestly had no expectation that he would be back in power and with a majority! The youth I have been watching are somewhat upset. One friend was so upset that she forgot to vote that she made it her status for the day, an apology to her peers.

Another put up positive reinforcement to appease the disappointment by saying, “To all those who voted: thank you. I know there is a Harper majority, but take comfort in knowing that more than half of Canadians did NOT vote Harper.” This tells me that many people ended up voting for the Leader they connected with the most, not necessarily the party or the candidate in their riding. Sometimes, that makes me think the Canadian election process needs to be tweaked. But that is another topic. Another student commented: “Proud to see the first female Tamil MP elected, amazed to see NDP opposition, sad to see my party only win 34 seats, petrified to see what Harper has planned for me ‘til I am 25, and MOTIVATED to push for mixed member proportional system of voting.” I think students are really disappointed – I am not seeing much reaction or expression. It is as if many are still in shock and digesting the information. One comment on Facebook says, “I can hardly believe it's a majority government.” Perhaps, other world news has distracted

REVENGE, RETALIATION AND KILLING’ By: Gulshan Aalani Whether it is the war of Late Osama Bin Laden, Al-Qaida, Libyan leader Gaddafi/Gadhafi, or Bush and his illegal war and killing, killing of Gaddafi’s family members including Children by Nato, killing of Libyan rebels by Gaddafi forces, and now the killing of unarmed Osama Bin Laden and his family members, all in the name of revenge, and retaliation. Each one recognizing each other as ‘Enemy’ and so their mission; either kill or be killed. So, shall we put them all in the same category of ‘Terrorists’? Even though, the U.S. led Nato forces killed in the name of humanitarian rescue Mission, but killed the innocents Women and children. That proved the Boots in the Air are more dangerous than the Boots on the ground. Osama Bin Laden killed by his enemies, who considered him their enemy, as allegedly he killed thousands of innocent people, but it is absolutely unethical to drop off his body in in the Sea, which reminds the story of Prophet Jonah was thrown in the Sea (by the superstitious ignorant ones), and swallowed by the big Fish-Shark, but was saved by God. What is the reason of such unethical wild action of throwing Osama’s body in the Sea? Or was it just a stunt of killing him but it was someone else killed? Why hiding and getting rid off his body? It would be better to show some evidence proving it was him killed, and so for once and for all Al-Qaida and all others can put this tragedy of enmity behind, bring an end, put a cork to revenge

and the killing of innocents, as killing of innocents is haraam/illegal. Thus, this is the most complex, incomprehensible, inconceivable situation and perplexing for the righteous, religious upright people with ethics and convictions to the true religions, true GOD and HIS Sharia/divine law, which is ignored by many. The teachings of all the Religions mainly the Holy Scriptural religions are to forget, forgive, and turn the other Cheek, but nobody wants to turn the other Cheek, but revenge, Retaliate and kill. With the highest education and advanced technology ‘Man’s’ Mentality is not changing at all. Though, Wars and fights in self defense are allowed by the Higher Power but at the same timem given the guiding instruction manual/the rules and regulations for the fights and wars, but in the madness of revenge mankind has rejected the most important part of his life, this world and its ruler the true One GOD-the Creator, and in the madness of revenge HE is rejected and disobeyed. Messenger Muhammad (SAS) is abused by many ignorant ones, who can now see that he wasn’t a terrorist, he never killed any innocents by throwing bombs, or Gun in the hand, he in fact followed the Divine commands, and went out side the City in an open field facing the enemies to fight face to face, who were marching towards him to kill him and the newly converts Muslims (Christians, Catholics, Jews, Arabs, Quraish and children of Israel), who were harassed, abused, tortured, deprived of business, food and water just because they accepted One GOD the Creator and HIS law. Consequently, the Prophet was on an humanitarian rescue mission, who prayed

minority and most were pretty sure they did not want Ignatieff running the country. It was not just due to Ignatieff ’s poor performance in the campaign portion, but also the fact that the Liberals’ values and policies so closely resemble the NDP and the Conservatives that they are neither here nor there. There was not enough of a distinction for voters. What is important to note is that the political landscape changed with the seat won by the Green Party and Elizabeth May. Also, a lot of the seats won by the NDP were in Quebec ridings, which may be more of a challenge now because they are being given a chance and if they don’t provide for Quebec, they may not get those seats again. I guess we will have to pick an issue we care about and get involved and make change the hard way as someone mentioned on Facebook. At least, we won’t have to worry about another election until October 2015.

and obeyed HIS lord GOD. The true Muslims must follow his teaching of ethics, moral values, his patience and perseverance and forget about such violence of revenge. Let us hope and pray that the demise of Osama Bin Laden be the last and end of our war against each other.

Federal elections and Death of Osama Bin Laden By: R.C. PURI, Surrey With regard to the results of the recently culminated Federal elections let me state that there is nothing surprising therein, as the Conservatives were already poised for landslide victory and formation of a majority government. Nevertheless, it is awfully shocking to observe that the Liberals had to pay through the nose very high price for its policy not welcomed at all by the electorate in general. The massive erosion of the Liberals' vote bank has tremendously gone in favor of the New Democrats. In relation to the killing of the world's most notorious and dreaded terrorist Osama Bin Laden on the soil of Pakistan, all that can be said in one sentence is that Pakistan has lost its face in the world community and has given rise to a number of questions of far reaching consequences that may be very hard to reply to the satisfaction of the nations that matter a great deal at the international level and which may erode to the irreparable extent the honor, dignity, self-esteem and sovereignty of this great Muslim nation.

Congratulations Mr. Harper and Conservative Party By: Mian M. Abubaqr Spokesperson PTI Canada Pakistan Tehrek e Insaf Canada congratulates the Prime Minister, Mr. Stephen Harper and Conservative Party of Canada on winning the federal elections of Canada. PTI Canada expects Mr. Harper to fulfil his promises to Canadians and to better the economy of the country. Many congratulations on forming a historic majority government. Canadian Politics and Death of Osama Bin Laden By: Intikhab Ahmed A jolt in Canadian Politics, this weeks federal elections have created a tremor in Canadian politics, this jolt is felt and surprised Federal Liberals, and Conservatives party of Canada, all parties were not prepared for the results, Conservatives were looking for a clean sweep, and Liberals were looking for a win, just a win, nothing more, Block in Quebec could not sold their separation agenda to the young Quebec work force needs betters Jobs, near their home towns, but MR. their attention. But overall, there were a lot more comments on pushing youth to vote than the actual results. Many, many students were excited to practice democracy and tried to influence their peers to go out and vote regardless of who they chose to represent them. One youth leader put it best: “I'm voting NDP today for strong social services that belong to all Canadians, not just the wealthiest. I'm voting NDP for principled foreign policy on Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. But I really don't care how you vote, as long as you please do.” It is true that a lot of individuals are blaming the NDP for causing a Harper majority, but I do not think the blame game makes any sense. The way I see it is that the NDP’s claimed seats were won from the Liberals’ lost seats. The extra voters – the ones who never really bothered to vote, but now felt like they had to, came out for Harper, and are the ones who put the Conservatives over the top for a majority government. These individuals were usually the ones who cared first and foremost about the economy – I mean an election every 6 months or so can become quite costly – and believed that Harper was the best choice in this situation. They no longer wanted a

At the same time both leading parties, underestimated, third player is also in the Ring, The federal NDP, this player did his home work, Mr. Jack Layton have proved that leadership counts, under his leadership, the NDP emerged as second largest party and emerged as official opposition, this is my personnel opinion, many times I said if Liberal party, would have Jack Layton as their leader the federal Liberals would have better chance to form Liberal government, too late for liberals they had their time, now wind of change have lifted NDP to new heights. Death of OSAMA Bin La Din on Election Day, benefited Conservatives, ordinary Canadians might be in a State of shock, and voted Conservatives. I hope Osama's death will bring an end to the war terror. Its NDP agenda to bring back our soldiers back home as an official opposition it's their duty to pressurize the Harper government to stop sending our forces for instead use our forces as peace keeper, Canadians have stood for peace, not for wars.

file tenant and if they did, why did they not investigate? If they did not, was it because they didn’t want to know? The Western media has been accusing some elements of the ISI of maintaining links with terrorist groups, such as the Haqqani network. Did they really know that Bin Laden and his retinue were in Abbott Abad, and kept silent by effectively providing him with protection? How could foreign aircraft fly so deep into our territory undetected and unanticipated? There is a lot of confusion over this whole episode as to what role, if any, our security

the war of terrorism unless it is another plot for a new adventure. Just like the official version of 9/11, there are several inconsistencies in the death of Osama Bin Laden. Karl Rove, Bush’s advisor once said, “We are an empire now. We create our own reality”. Is this another of US’ created reality? According to news reports, the American Special Forces conducted the operation without informing the Pakistani authorities. If, what they are saying is true, then it has brought a shame on Pakistan at the hands of the Pakistan Army; even worse than the humiliation we earned over the Raymond Davis episode through our civilian leadership. Just a few days ago the Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani’s said that the dignity and honor of Pakistan and its people would not be compromised to achieve prosperity. I don’t know what he has to say now? Even if the operation was conducted with the cooperation of the Pakistan Army leadership it’s still a charge-sheet against the military establishment. Why should we raise and sustain the world’s seventh largest Army, costing more than 8 billion dollars per year, if it could not or does not counter such a foreign invasion? CIA and the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Pakistan’s powerful security and spy agency, are said to be partners in this war but seemingly ISI was not trusted and this sensitive information was not shared with them. Did the ISI or its various branches and minions, knew of the existence of this highly unusual, heavily fortified, expensively built compound in Abbott Abad, only a few kilometers away from the elite Pakistan Military Academy? Did they know of its high-value, low-pro-

The Significance of the Two Qiblahs By: Dr. Spahic Omer It was on account of the remarkable historical importance of the al-Masjid al-Aqsa - a mosque associated with a number of major prophets -- that it served as the first qiblah (direction of prayer) to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and his followers for about 18 months following the migration from Makkah to Madinah. After that, the qiblah was shifted towards the al-Masjid alHaram in Makkah. Having faced in his prayers the two most ancient, and historically speaking the most significant, mosques on earth, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) thus

acknowledged the validity and truthfulness of all the previous prophets and messengers and the original messages that had been revealed to them. In point of fact, moreover, believing in the earlier prophets and their original revelations constitutes one of the pillars of the message or the revelation revealed to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Denying any earlier prophet, or any revelation of the original revelations, Islam views as a blasphemous act which rescinds one's association with Islam and Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) rendering him a nonMuslim. Facing from Madinah, the epicenter of the operations of the last prophet to mankind, firstly the al-Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem and then the al-Masjid al-Haram in Makkah also indicated the ultimate vindication of the two mosques' spiritual and historical standings and roles at the hands of the seal of prophets, as well as the commencement of their total purification, also at the hand of the last prophet and his followers, of all the impurities with which the two mosques' names and purposes had been often in history gravely stained and defiled. This was so because as the seal of prophets, Prophet Muhammad's task was not only to look at the present, as well as to the future, and chart the courses for people's moral and spiritual fulfillment. It was also to look back at the past where the tawhidic (God's Oneness) schemes of other prophets have been corrupted and tampered with, setting the things right and occasionally naming the culprits. That way, the struggles, achievements and legacies of prophets, their followers and whoever wished and contributed any good to the spiritual and civilization enrichment of mankind have been duly recognized and endorsed. At the same time, the falsehood and deceptive plots of the opponents of prophets and of the truth of Islam which they all brought were unmistakably exposed and resolutely repudiated. Thus, the direction and tone of the last Allah's revelation to man were clearly set. The chief objectives of the last Prophet's mission were also clearly spelled out. According to such objectives, the last Prophet (pbuh) was as much a reformer as an originator. He was concerned as much about the present and future as about the past. He came as much to initiate some new

South Asian Muslims mark daffodil day to fight cancer

On April 27, The South Asian Muslim Community organized a fundraising dinner at the Daffodil Day April 27 in Crystal @York Surrey; around 200 people attended this event. The event was organized to encourage community and to show their support for the fight against cancer. April is Daffodil Month. and community members are encouraged to show their support for the fight against cancer and those affected by making a donation to receive a daffodil pin to be worn throughout the month and specifically on Daffodil Day, set for April 27. The daffodil has long been an important symbol for the Canadian Cancer Society -- its bright hue the perfect emblem for hope. There are six million daffodil pins being sold across the country, with two million of them in this province alone. BC Minister of Health Mike Dijon attended this event and motivated the people to help generously for this noble cause. Barbara Kaminsky, CEO of the Canadian Cancer Society's B.C. and Yukon branch, briefed her 16 years services with this Canadian Cancer Society and also said,

that more than 21,000 British Columbians will be diagnosed with cancer this year and the initiative is intended to show them they're not alone. Since the 1950s, when society volunteers and Lady Flora Eaton first hosted daffodil teas in Toronto, the flower has played a strong role in the society's public awareness and fundraising efforts, and 2011 is no different. Mr. Harv Puni was the master of Ceremony; he provided important information about the diagnosis and treatment of Cancer. Mr. Haroon Khan shared his experience and said his family suffered with this painful disease when family lost their 5 years old kid (son of Mr. Fazal R.Khan). He announced 3000 dollars donation at Daffodil Day. to Canadian Cancer Society. Mr. Harris Bajwa son of Mr. Asif Bajwa co-coordinated this successful event in Crystal Hall Surrey.

KAIZEN Workshop in PICS By: Mr. Khan The first series of KAIZEN means Continues Improvement workshop has conducted by Azhar Khan, KAIZEN Coach on April 26th by the support of Mr. Waqar Ahmad Jan, Settlement Worker, PICS. The main objective of this workshop is to develop and enhance the professional skills of our community. KAIZEN is a Japanese word and the meaning of is Continues Improvement; the methodology is to improve personal and professional goals. The workshop started by the Holy Quran by br. Shabbir Patel. After the Holy Quran recite the orientation and objectives of this workshop explained by Mr. Waqar Jan, Information & Referral Officer of Progressive Intercultural Community Services Society. Mr. Waqar introduced Azhar Khan and then he conducted and KAIZEN Workshop educational session where he explained about the KAIZEN, Kaizen Methodology, Kaizen Process. What KAIZEN can do for you, Kaizen Action Plan, How you prepare about Kaizen Action Plan and what are the benefits of KAIZEN. In the last session Azhar Khan mentioned his future goals for the community and his educational program. He explained that this is the first step of KAIZEN, however to grow in Kaizen a participant can take several Kaizen related workshops which he is planning to conduct as a series in future. The steps of Kaizen start from KAIZEN Basic, KAIZEN Expert, KAIZEN Leader and then KAIZEN Coach.

In Q & A Session What inspires you to do KAIZEN workshop for our Community? I am so keen and concern about our community educational and professional skills since long and noticed that there is no plate form of KAIZEN / Continues Improvement process to enhance the personal and professional skills. Therefore I discussed this with Mr. Waqar, Mr. Rafiq and Mr. Ijaz Chatha and they all motivated me to start something like this workshop. Then I planned with Mr. Waqar and he fully supported me to organize this workshop. I was giving these workshop sines 2002 on professional level but I realized that there is a lot of demand and need to do this workshop for our community. Recently, I have successfully completed High Performance Leadership Award with Toastmasters International, CA, USA and then I decided then now I will do these educational workshop for our community.

To do something for my community is my burning desire and this is my inspiration. How KAIZEN process is practical and fruitful for our community and what are your goals for community workshops? by Nasir Pirzada - Miracle You never become KAIZEN Leader and Coach till you will not prove that KAIZEN has tangible results on ground and on financial papers. I proved this during my official projects and due to the reason I declared the Gold Medalist in 2005 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for my Kaizen Project. I have so many practical examples that why KAIZEN Methodology is successful and implemented in so many successful organizations like Toyota etc. However recently I am planning to implement KAIZEN workshop and welcome any of the participant to discuss with me if he have some project then I am ready to coach him to plan and execute the project. I already planned for the next workshop of KAIZEN Methodology and later on planning to do advance courses of educational workshop related to KAIZEN like Inventory Management, Supply Chain Management, 5S Techniques, 7S Storage Techniques, How to reduce Dead Stock, Sales & Marketing, PDCA and DMAIC Process. How we develop the KAIZEN Action Plan and What is PDCA? In the initial stage it is important to attend the Basic Kaizen workshop series and to fully understand the Kaizen Process. Election Night Celebrations by NDP at Bollywood Banquet Hall in Surrey

Dear Respected Community Member Many of you have received a 2011 Census form asking for demographic information. Pakistan-Canada Association humbly recommends that when asked about 'mother language' that you put 'Urdu' as your selection. This is strictly for the purpose of being able to discern the number of Pakistanis living in the Lower Mainland, BC and hopefully Canada. We fully understand that Pakistan has many languages and dialects that we all hold dear and respect. Please take this as nothing more than a humble suggestion.

Thank You! For your Support & Vote!

Special from the pen of Founding Editor of the Miracle

Osama, Obama and the Deep Blue Sea By Sqn. Ldr. (R) Nusrat Hussain nusrathussain@shaw.ca Almost ten years after the tumbling of twin towers; an overall loss of hundreds and thousands of human lives and trillions of dollars into the war theatre of Afghanistan; the American nation has finally announced their victory and unity of cause by gathering about the white House around midnight and celebrating over the dead body of a universally cursed person— Osama Bin Laden. Whether or not Dr. Martin Luther King said it, but one cannot deny the depth of words: “I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” President Obama proclaimed ‘Justice has been served.’ God bless the American President for setting forth the universal standards of Justice, peace and equality. Barak Hussein Obama’s pre election slogan of ‘Change’ and ‘Yes we can’ had given hope to people not only in the USA, but also to many around the world. It can be seen now floating over the surface of deep blue sea where at its bed lay the dead body of Osama Bin Laden.

Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the early eighties introduced Saudi born Osama to the battlefields of Afghanistan. He sooner became the blue eyed baby of America and was awarded full military, moral, financial and media support. He inflicted heavy wounds to the Soviet infidels invading the Muslim land of Afghanistan.’ Mujahideen’ forces under the command of Bin Laden largely contributed towards the shameful withdrawal of Soviet Union from Afghanistan. As always; in a game of double standards, based on protecting the self interest alone, the Americans evacuated Afghanistan after the accomplishment of their victory against the Soviets. Their blue eyed partners of war (Mujahideen) were left behind without any financial support or words of sufficient sympathy and praise. Osama considered it a betrayal and turned around to fight against the American and the Western Powers. He exploited the depressed Muslim world through his personal wisdom and interpretation of Islam which portrayed U.S.A. and the West to be the responsible Forces for all the injustice prevailing in the entire Muslim World. He drew large sympathy from the dejected Muslim world and his thought was adopted as a just philosophy by many Muslim Youth. In the name of Islam, they turned into suicide bombers and killed innocent people--Muslims and non Muslims alike. Anyone differing with their interpretation of Islam was put on the hit list for execution. Bin Laden’s philosophy badly damaged the peaceful face of Islam and portrayed it to

the world as a religion of hate and terror. His doctrine was against the basic teachings of Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon him); who before every encounter with the enemy, forbade his troops from killing children, women, old and anyone who surrendered or took refuge behind closed doors. Showing great respect to living things, he commanded his troops not even to take down the trees bearing fruit. However; unknowingly, Bin Laden delivered a larger service to Islam when many embarked the road of exploring the real Islam. It also resulted in the awakening of the moderate Muslims who now have openly started disregarding and condemning Laden’s interpretation of Islam. Earlier, they were reluctant to confront fearing the reaction from hard-line followers of Islam. AlQaeda has lost the spine and is eliminated or will emerge with a new force? It is a far cry of every reasonable person. Laden is likely to be remembered as someone responsible for the death of hundreds and thousands of innocent human beings from all religions including Islam. In the days ahead, his die hard living followers will disassociate with him while his body decays at the bed of Deep Blue Arabian Sea. Capture of Bin Laden from the surroundings of Military Garrison and Pakistan Military Academy Kakul in Abbotabad leaves plenty of questions to be answered by the bosses of military and intelligence agencies in Pakistan. Were they unaware and incompetent or they had a role in hiding him? Whatever the reason may be?---.DG ISI Lt. General Pasha will have to make pub-

Q League Receives Prompt Dower By Tariq Mian Lahore; Pakistan Unaware of the US military operation in Abbotabad, Pakistani Presidency was busy celebrating a deal between the two rival parties of conflicting agendas. Some journalist from the media contacted the Presidency to find out about the American operation; surprisingly the authorities at the Presidency knew nothing at the time. Sadly, the government of Pakistan wakes up when it is all over. Since 2008 election, the PPP minority government needed crutches to carry out its function of governance, so the PML N provided the needed tools on “off and on” basis initially, but later on agreed to extend the benefits of friendly opposition for long time which actually was detrimental to the interests of the nation. Nevertheless, the recent newlyweds (political union) have broken all previous records crossing all democratic norms. The political parties involved in such an “adulterated democracy” are in the honey moon phase for now after the “haq maher muajjal” in the form of ministries has

already been given upfront ignoring the resulted national loss beyond repair. Adulteration of democracy endangers its very essence, yet it has been going on for long time depriving the country of good governance. Sorry to say but the truth is - the very last nail to the coffin of Pakistan’s adulterated democracy has been hammered in. This unnatural alliance is the desperate need of the evil players to avoid corruption cases. They fear the apex judiciary and they want to hide behind executive powers for their own protection. This alliance is aimed at protecting personal vested interests and survival including of course - the release of Ch. Moonis Elahi, dumping all Swiss cases/ NRO cases for ever etc. Since N league is out of the picture at the moment, and there is a desperate greed on the part of the PPP to cling to power, the Q league, MQM or other Maulanas and parties know exactly well - what to demand at the right time. Blackmailing plays an important role too indeed. A matrimonial battle of interests is easily predictable, as Ch. Pervaiz Elahi is on his way to become Deputy Prime

lic the extent of discussions with his CIA counterpart during his visit of 11th April 2011 that immediately followed his visit to Afghanistan on April 16th before the announcement of the death of Osama Bin Laden on 1st May 2011. Pakistan owes a good explanation to the international community. The explanation needs to be backed by positive actions of punishing the culprits in order to restore some faith in her fast diminishing international good image. During such developing times a drastic change of cooperative thought between the military, establishment and politicians is required to tackle the situation in Pakistan. A national government having participation by all the political parties and the major stake holders from the Armed Forces, Establishment and Judiciary might produce a desirable result. They seriously will have to address the cause of failure by punishing the people responsible for putting the state in such an extremely embarrassing situation. Love of democracy has overtaken the Muslim world of Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Algeria and Bahrain. Sooner, it is likely to infiltrate into the other neighbouring Muslim countries ruled through monarchy and dictatorship. Plato referring to his concept of ‘Utopia’ (an ideal world) in his dialogue The Republic stated- the world will never cease from its suffering unless “Philosophers become kings…or those now called kings …genuinely and adequately philosophize." New Surrey City Watch program By: Tara Foslien Senior Communications Specialist Surrey – There are now more eyes and ears on the streets of Surrey helping to prevent and reduce crime, thanks to the new City Watch program which officially began today, announced Mayor Dianne Watts.City Watch is a CUPE-BC program and another innovative initiative within the City’s Crime Reduction Strategy. Under the program, municipal staff is trained to recognize and report suspicious activity they may witness while carrying out the normal duties of their jobs. Employees do not become directly involved with apprehending offenders, but rather report their observations to the Surrey RCMP. “Our employees are in a unique position to provide this valuable community service because they are working outside in neighbourhoods across the city when most people are away from their homes. City Watch allows them to keep a watchful eye while doing their regular tasks,” says Mayor Watts. “I want to thank all the employees who have

volunteered to be a part of this program. I’m proud of their commitment to our community and their efforts will make Surrey an even better place to live and work.” City Watch is a volunteer program and the training sessions begin today. Some of the examples employees will be watching for include: · Suspicious or violent incidents · Suspicious persons going door to door · Suspicious people in back yards · Open/forced doors or windows · Slow moving vehicles cruising a neighbourhood · Vehicles without plates · Apparently abandoned vehicles · Individuals that appear to be lurking around businesses or residences · Apparent business transactions conducted from a vehicle, particularly around schools and parks “I know I speak for all our members when I say how proud we are to have our employer join with us in this program,” said Laurie

B.C. Parks are in Embarrassing Condition on 100th Anniversary NDP Press Rekease VICTORIA— After 100 years of providing recreational opportunities to British Columbians, our provincial park system is in an embarrassing condition, says New Democrat environment critic Rob Fleming. "Last year the Auditor General gave the B.C. Liberal government a failing grade for their mismanagement of our parks system. Now, instead of taking real action to repair our ailing B.C. Parks system, Premier Christy Clark is doing nothing but removing the parking fees she imposed as deputy premier," said Fleming. Fleming noted that the B.C. Liberals budget cut of $10 million to parks funding has excluded many B.C. families from the use and enjoyment of parks, with three million fewer visitors annually since 2001 - a 16 per cent decline. "For years now park attendance has been in free fall, and parking fees were only part of the equation," said Fleming. "The B.C. Liberal decision to eliminate interpretive

services and the progressive decline in parks facilities due to ongoing budget cuts have made our parks less family-friendly." According to Fleming, part of the problem is that B.C. Parks has to manage more parks and protected areas with 26 per cent less funding than they had in 2001. "We've added more land to our parks system and at the same time we have cut the number of park rangers devoted to protecting it. In 2001 we had 26 full time park rangers, now there are just 10 working in our parks," said Fleming. "The Opposition New Democrats predicted parking fees would be a disaster at the time that Christy Clark and the B.C. Liberals introduced them, but they are just one of the many ways that the accessibility and pride in our parks system has been undermined by this government." Adrian Dix and the B.C. New Democrats are strongly committed to strengthening and protecting our B.C. Parks system for families today and for generations to come.

Surrey is now the biggest member of CUPE’s City Watch program, and I know we’re going to be as successful as all the other City Watch communities across BC.” City Watch is part of the City of Surrey’s Crime Reduction Strategy, which contains 106 recommendations focused on the following four primary objectives: • Reduce crime and increase community safety

• Increase public involvement in reducing crime • Increase integration between all stakeholders involved in crime reduction; and • Improve public awareness around the reality and perception of crime. Difference between war and a football game

By: Ethan Casey As I begin writing this it's 2 am where I am and 3 am in New York and Washington, where exuberant crowds have gathered at Ground Zero and the White House, chanting "USA! USA!" and singing the national anthem and a country-western song called "God Bless the USA." By the time you read this, you surely will have seen and heard some of that on television. It bodes ill. The fact that Osama bin Laden was killed well inside Pakistan by US Navy SEALs, is dangerously embarrassing to the Pakistani state and military. "He was right under the noses of the Pakistani military there," said Fox News correspondent Jennifer Griffin, who noted that Abbottabad is a "wellknown military town." Lt-Gen Thomas McInerney, also on Fox, was even more ominously to the point: "We've got enough problems with Pakistan that if we had talked to anybody in that government, Osama would have gotten away. We have a problem with Pakistan. Everybody's talking about it. This will highlight it." Equally worrying is the attitude Americans are expressing toward the US military. It's one thing to be respectful, another to be worshipful, and Americans seem frighteningly oblivious to the cost to our society of its reverence toward the youngsters glibly known here as "our men and women in uniform." Debra Burlingame, sister of the pilot whose plane hit the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, said: "Thanks again to our wonderful military; a big hats-off to the CIA." A US Marine in uniform told the buffoonish Fox correspondent Geraldo Rivera, "I know for the military, we're motivated as hell right now." A Republican former Congressman called the US military "the

most important profession that anyone can be in" and said, "I think that this is one for the team." That phrase calls to mind the in-your-face symbolism of American football as a metaphor for war, and Noam Chomsky's apt description of sports as "training in irrational jingoism." Rivera gushed about the "patriotism worn on their sleeves" of the shockingly young crowd hooting it up outside the White House, but it's more than ever important to reclaim that word from the right wing and to highlight the distinction that George Orwell insisted on way back in 1945: "Nationalism is not to be confused with patriotism. Both words are normally used in so vague a way that any definition is liable to be challenged, but one must draw a distinction between them, since two different and even opposing ideas are involved. By 'patriotism' I mean devotion to a particular place and a particular way of life, which one believes to be the best in the world but has no wish to force on other people. É Nationalism, on the other hand, is inseparable from the desire for power." By Orwell's definition, I'm happy to call myself a patriotic American. And such a sentiment is consistent with the Holy Quran, "O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another." Patriotism implies respect for others who are differently patriotic, and that should be fine with everyone. But the young Americans that Geraldo Rivera is celebrating, the children of 9/11, have spent the past decade being trained in irrational jingoism and are blithely unaware of the impression our country has left on the rest

of the world. I recall something a thoughtful American friend said to me in Haiti in 2004, a year when that country was more than usually brutalised by American power, "When you see other people waving their countries' flags you think, 'That's nice, they love their country.' When you see the American flag, you know people are going to die." "Too many people still believe in the state, and war is the health of the state," wrote Ernest Hemingway in 1934. Sixty-four years after its founding, and for explicable reasons, Pakistan is still in state-building mode, and the military is an effective and patriotic national institution. I visited Swat in March, and since then I've been praising what I perceive as its restraint and benevolence there to audiences around the US. But the fact that bin Laden was killed, by US forces, just down the road from a Pakistani military school in Abbottabad is a severe black eye to the Pakistani state. Pakistani citizens and media will be doing their country a patriotic service if, far from excusing it, they continue to hold the state's feet to the fire for what clearly was either its incompetence or its complicity with bin Laden. Such assertion of Pakistani society's independence from the Pakistani state will count for a lot in coming days and weeks as friends of Pakistan like myself, and others of goodwill, do our best to resist another surge of militaristic American nationalism. As I watch over and over the mobs in New York and Washington, I fear two things. One is that too many Pakistanis are too trauma-

tised to lay aside their anger and frustration. "WE HATE AMERICANS!!!" a Pakistani I don't know personally told me on Facebook, just as I was finishing this piece. When I pointed out that I'm American and asked if he hated me, he replied, "I hate all of u!!" The other thing I fear is that too few Americans appreciate the difference between global war and a giant football game. Football players have no more indi-

viduality than cogs in a machine, and the role of the crowd in a football stadium is to channel the emotions of vindictive triumphalism and hatred. That's what I'm seeing on US television as I write this. The legendary populist politician Huey Long is reputed to have said, prophetically, "When fascism comes to America, it will come wrapped in the American flag." Or, as CNN quoted someone as asking pithily if pathetically on Twitter, "If Osama bin Laden is dead, can we please have our rights back?" The writer is the author of "Alive and Well in Pakistan" and "Overtaken By Events: A Pakistan Road Trip".

How to eat cheap yet healthfully We're paying more these days not only at the gas pump but also at the grocery store. Blame it on rising oil prices, disappointing crop yields, global warming, and/or the weak dollar. Robert Earl, director of nutrition policy for the Grocery Manufacturer Association, says there are many factors affecting food prices. What it all means is that shoppers are looking for ways to save money when they're food shopping without sacrificing nutrition. WebMD asked some experts for tips and strategies on saving money on your grocery bill while still eating healthfully. Planning ahead is the most important step to getting more bang for your buck at the grocery store, says Katherine Tallmadge, RD, a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. "Take inventory of what you have on hand so you don’t overbuy, create a detailed shopping list based on your needs and weekly menu plan, and take into account how you plan on using leftovers," she says. Have a light snack before you go shopping, and stick to your grocery list to help avoid impulse purchases or costly mistakes like falling for the displays at the end of the aisles. Before you plan your weekly menu, check the ads to see what’s on sale and use coupons to take advantage of sales and money-saving coupons. You can even sign up online to receive coupons and email alerts from your favorite grocers. 1. Buy produce in season. Check the food section in your newspaper to find the best buys for the week, based on fresh produce in season. Food in season is usually priced to sell. During the summer months, corn on the cob can cost as little as 10 cents an ear; at other times of the year, it may cost 10 times as much. Also, shop your local farmers' market for great deals on local produce; the prices won't include shipping costs. 2. Use sales and coupons. Planning meals around what's on sale can lower your grocery bills, especially if you also use coupons (make sure they're for item you would buy anyway). Sunday newspapers are full of coupons and sales circulars to get you started. It's also a good idea to stock up on staples when they're on sale. "Buy one, get one free" is basically a technique to get you to buy twice as much as you need at half the price. At some markets, though, the product rings up half-price -- so you don't have to buy more than one to get the savings. Use your freezer to store sale items that can be used at a later date. 3. Brown-bag it. Making lunch and taking it with you is a great money-saver and an

excellent use of leftovers for meals at work, school, or wherever your destination. "Packing your lunch not only saves you money, but you can control all the ingredients so they are healthy and low in calories," says Diekman, who is nutrition director at Washington University. Pack a simple sandwich, salad, soup, wrap, and/or a hearty snack of cheese. Use freezer packs and containers to keep food at the proper temperature unless you have access to a refrigerator. 4. Think frozen, canned, or dried. Next time you're gathering ingredients for a recipe, try using frozen, canned, or dried foods. They may be less expensive than fresh, yet are equally nutritious. Produce is typically frozen, canned, or dried at the peak of ripeness, when nutrients are plentiful. Fish and poultry are often flash-frozen to minimize freezer damage and retain freshness. With frozen foods, you can use only the amount you need, reseal the package, and return it to the freezer. If it's properly stored, there's no waste. Canned foods are often sitting in a bath of juice, syrup, or salty water, and usually require rinsing. Dried fruits are concentrated in flavor and a great substitute for fresh fruit. Also consider using powdered or evaporated versions of milk in soups, casseroles, mashed potatoes, or desserts. Buy the form that gives you the best price for your needs. 5.Save on protein foods. When possible, substitute inexpensive, vegetarian sources such as beans, eggs, tofu, and legumes for more expensive meat, fish, or poultry. Eat vegetarian once a week or more to increase your consumption of healthy plant foods while saving money. Eggs are an excellent, inexpensive source of protein that can be eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner. You could also try using a smaller portion of meat, fish, or poultry and extending the dish with whole grains, beans, eggs, and/or vegetables. When you do buy meat, choose smaller portions of lean cuts. For example, lean cuts of beef are those that include the terms "loin" or "round." (You can tenderize lean cuts of meat mechanically or by marinating it.) You can also buy a whole chicken and cut it up instead of paying the butcher to do it for you, or buy the cheaper "family pack" and portion it into airtight freezer bags. 6. Waste not, want not. Before you toss perishable food into your grocery cart, think about exactly how you'll use it. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that Americans generate roughly 30 million tons of food waste each year. Using leftover vegetables, poultry, or meat in soups, stews, salads, and casseroles minimizes cost and

demonstrates your creativity in the kitchen. For example, have a roasted chicken for dinner one night, and use the leftovers for dinner the next night. Try topping a bed of fresh greens with vegetables, fruits, and slices of leftover chicken. Add a loaf of whole-grain bread, and presto! You've got a nutritious meal in minutes. You can also eat leftovers for breakfast or take them with you for lunch. 7. Go generic. Consider buying store brands instead of pricier national brands. "All food manufacturers follow standards to provide safe food and beverage products of high quality," says Earl. Many grocery companies buy national-brand products made to their specifications and simply put their own label on the products. Read the ingredient list on the label to be sure you're getting the most for your money. Ingredients are listed in order by weight. So when you're buying canned tomatoes, look for a product that lists tomatoes, not water, as the first ingredient. Also look for simpler versions of your favorite foods. For example, buy oatmeal or simple flaked or puffed cereals that contain fewer additives and are less expensive (and often healthier) than fancier cereals. 8. Buy prepackaged only if you need it. Unless you have a coupon or the item is on sale, buying prepackaged, sliced, or washed products comes with a higher price tag. Still, people living alone may find that smaller sizes of perishable products or bags of prepared produce eliminate waste and fit their needs best, despite the extra cost. You can also save money (and boost nutrition) by passing up the aisles with processed foods, cookies, snack foods and soda. 9. Buy and cook in bulk. Joining a bulk

shopping club, like Sam's, Costco, or BJ's, can be cost-effective if you frequent the club regularly. Bulk purchases can be a great way to save money -- as long as they get used. You might also look in your community for shopping cooperatives that sell food in bulk at a substantial savings. Cooking in bulk can save both money and time, says Tallmadge. "Prepare food in bulk and freeze into family-sized portions, which save time in the kitchen," she suggests. For example, making a big batch of tomato sauce will less expensive (and probably tastier) than buying some. 10. Plant a garden. For benefits that go beyond cost savings, plant your own produce. There's nothing better than a summer-fresh tomato from the garden. Tomatoes even grow well in containers if you don't have space for a garden, and some neighborhoods offer community gardening spaces. Start small, and see how easy it is to grow fresh herbs or a few simple vegetables. And if you invest a little time in freezing or canning your harvest, you can enjoy summer's bounty all year long. • A woman must include calcium in her diet everyday. This may include drinking 4 to 5 cups of milk daily (yes, that much) or regularly eating salmon, sardine and shrimps. Pregnant and lactating mothers need calcium too but just the right amount because more calcium is harmful for the fetus. Research shows that can almost 50% of all symptoms of PMS can be reduced by consuming 1200 mg of calcium daily. Calcium is important for women of all ages for the prevention of osteoporosis in later life. • Stopping Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is now actually reducing heart disease and fewer cases of estrogen-fueled breast cancer are being reported. If you are on HRT, you may want to read this first.

Women’s Health

A month ago I developed an awfully nasty cold. It was so bad that eventually I started wheezing and spat a little blood every time I coughed up mucous. After about a week of wheezing and sneezing I told my husband that I felt dizzy when I coughed and the fever wasn’t going away either. Before this, I didn’t complain to my family about it at all. I dropped and picked kids; cooked dinners; made school snacks; did the laundry and the dishes; ironed clothes; polished shoes; and then collapsed every night. Eventually when I went to see the doctor she told me I had developed acute bronchitis which could lead to pneumonia if I wasn’t careful. My family was very upset – the children didn’t want to see mummy ill and in bed. This is what I didn’t want. As mothers and wives, many women sacrifice their health so that the smooth machinery of household chores is not disturbed. It becomes all the more difficult to maintain good health if the mother happens to work like me. I have virtually no time for myself. But lately I have realised that if I don’t look after my health, my children may be at a greater loss than seeing me in bed for a few days. And while thinking hard what to write I thought let me celebrate women’s health with you and remind you how important you are; women always forget that. I will list below a few medical facts every woman should keep in mind:

• The top 10 Cancer symptoms women need to know are: 1. Persistent pelvic pain 2. Abdominal swelling/bloating 3. Persistent lower back pain 4. Abnormal vaginal bleeding 5. Persistent fever 6. Persistent stomach upset or bowel changes 7. Sudden weight loss 8. Vulva or vaginal abnormalities 9. Changes in the breast 10. Fatigue • If you are experiencing heavy periods, pelvic pressure and pain then do get checked for uterine fibroids. When The Good You Do Doesn’t Do You Any Good By Shabnam Khan - Family Counsellor Women are traditionally trained to place other’s needs first...... What could possibly be wrong with doing good? We want to please others, and we please ourselves when we feel to do so, that’s maybe! When we do both the same time, there’s twice the bonus. We’ve done it for as long as we can remember. The concept is based on the following logic: If I can make other people happy, then they will like me. If they like me, I must be good enough. If I’m good enough, they’ll keep me around, I’ll be safe and secure, and that’s all I need to be happy. The happier I can make others, the happier and therefore the safer I will be. The only problem is, it doesn’t work that way. Till which extend are you prepared to please everyone? Make no mistake. There’s nothing wrong with pleasing others - unless, of course, it becomes all-encompassing. True giving is a part of making any relationship work, but it’s not the only part - particularly if you’re

doing all the giving and they’re doing all the taking. That is not a balanced relationship! This malady starts with an ernest attempt to make someone else happy, but it can quickly become a pattern of behavior with a farreaching consequences. You may not like the end result later on and that might be too late. Now the truth is, this mostly affects women! Women have evolved to be relationship driven, and they seek out social situations as opportunities to relate to others. In ancient days, almost every task required communication, coordination and cooperation. In other words, a network of relationships supported every task. Evolution has virtually assured that women on the other will be caregivers. The better women were at these skills, the more value and status they realized within their families and their social circle. Nowadays women are playing various roles in the Society and instead of playing a Pleaser Role, do something even small that you are confident and proud of! Happy Women Know That If You Want To Take Care Of Others, You Must First- Or SimultaneouslyTake Care Of Yourself......... Remember that our men’s diet is supposed to be more than us. They are bigger and need more calories. Food in your plates must not be in equal proportion. Yours should ideally be half and if it isn’t, you can actually weigh more than your husband if your metabolic rate is not fast. • If you experience premenstrual breast tenderness, it can be reduced or eliminated by taking 600 IU of Vitamin E or 300 to 500 mg of magnesium daily. • Do you experience these symptoms: - Feeling restless or irritable - Feeling sad, hopeless, and overwhelmed - Crying a lot - Having no energy or motivation - Eating too little or too much - Sleeping too little or too much - Trouble focusing, remembering, or making decisions - Feeling worthless and guilty - Loss of interest or pleasure in activities - Withdrawal from friends and family - Having headaches, chest pains, heart palpitations (the heart beating fast and feeling like it is skipping beats), or hyperventilation (fast and shallow breathing) Chances are that you are suffering from postpartum depression. Postpartum depression can happen anytime within the first year after childbirth. It needs to be treated by a doctor. There is nothing abnormal about it and if you think you have ‘changed

negatively since the baby came’ then it is wise to accept that you need to see a doctor. • Hormonal fluctuations in a woman can affect gum tissue. Oral health is extremely important for women as research shows that at least 23 % of women (ages 30 to 54) have periodontitis. Read about women and oral health here. While it is said that men are physically stronger than women, we all know where truth lies! Even a petite, 90 pound woman is given the strength to endure pregnancy and childbirth by the Almighty. It is scientifically proven that male fetuses are miscarried more often than female fetuses because they are weaker. But that does not mean that women’s health is not vulnerable and the fast modern life is already rapidly taking its toll on women’s health. For example, a recent study has shockingly revealed that women in India are reaching menopause as early as at the age of 30. This means that it can cause early heart disease, osteoporosis, and breast cancer. Let’s not forget ourselves in the myriad of responsibilities we have and let’s celebrate our health which is linked to the happiness of our families. May Allah keep every woman and her family in His merciful care, ameen.

Loonie boosts odds of NHL success in Canada

The soaring loonie makes NHL hockey a better bet in Winnipeg and Quebec City than when the Jets and Nordiques left those cities, but that doesn’t mean new teams would be an automatic success, according to a new report to be released Wednesday. The report, released Wednesday by the Conference Board of Canada, says the small number of corporate headquarters hampers

both cities, particularly Quebec, and that the success of a team in Winnipeg would be hurt by the presence of the CFL’s Blue Bombers. Both cities also have arena problems — Quebec’s isn’t built yet, and Winnipeg’s holds a relatively-small 15,000 The report lists four “pillars” necessary for a city to be a successful NHL market: Population size, income levels, corporate support, and a level playing field with American teams. It notes that both cities have seen improvements in all four areas since the Jets left Winnipeg in 1996 and the Nordiques left Quebec in 1995. Both cities have seen their populations grow since their respective teams left, which is a plus, according to the Conference Board. The report says that in order to succeed, an NHL team needs a population of at least 800,000 — approxi-

mately the number of tickets a team would need to sell to make every single game a sellout. When the Jets left Winnipeg in 1996 and the Nordiques left Quebec in 1995, both cities had populations of 685,000. By 2010, both cities had grown to roughly 750,000, the report notes. In Winnipeg’s case, the report notes, the CFL team would be competing for the same entertainment dollars as a returning NHL franchise. The rise of the Canadian dollar from roughly 70 cents (U.S.) during the 1990s to well above parity today, also helps level the playing field for any NHL franchises which would move to Quebec City or Winnipeg, says the report. NHL teams based in Canada earn their income in Canadian currency, but player contracts are paid in U.S. dollars. When the loonie was lower, it put the Jets and Nordiques at a significant competitive disadvantage. A number of teams in the NHL are up for sale — including the Toronto Maple Leafs. But only two are routinely cited for possible relocation — the Phoenix Coyotes and Atlanta Thrashers.

True North Hockey and Entertainment is ready to buy one of the teams and move it to Manitoba. The league, however, is trying everything it can to work out a new deal with would-be buyer Matthew Hulsizer, who’d keep the Coyotes in the Phoenix area. The original deal fell apart when a taxpayers’ watchdog group began threatening lawsuits over Hulsizer’s deal with the city council in Glendale, Arizona. Meanwhile, Forbes.com reported Tuesday the Thrashers owners are asking $110 million (U.S.) for the team. Former major league baseball player Tom Glavine is trying to put together an ownership group to keep the team in Atlanta. But if he can’t, the Thrashers could be on the move. The league may be waiting to see what transpires in Phoenix before figuring out what to do with Atlanta. NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly wouldn’t comment on either location although the league has made public overtures to both cities in the past. “We look forward to reviewing the report,” said Daly. NFL gets expedited hearing for appeal A federal appeals court agreed Tuesday to fast track the NFL's request to put its labor lockout in place until a new deal is finally worked out. The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis set a June 3 hearing, with 30 minutes of oral argument for each side, before Judges Duane Benton, Kermit Bye and Steven Colloton. U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson issued her injunction stopping the lockout on April 25 and denied the NFL's appeal two days later. The league appealed to the 8th Circuit, and the same three-judge panel issued a temporary stay of Nelson's order on Friday. The lockout was put back in place by the owners a few hours later. The 8th Circuit is still deciding whether to make the stay more permanent, until the appeals process can play out. Under the appeals schedule set up Tuesday, the league's opening brief is due May 9 and the players must file their response brief by May 20. The NFL's reply to the response is due May 26. The appeals court's approval of an expedited hearing gave the NFL at least some relief from the stern rebuke Nelson delivered. In denying the NFL's request for a stay, Nelson wrote last week that the league "offered little, if any, evidence to directly rebut" evidence from the players they're being irreparably damaged by the lockout, the key requirement for a decision to lift it. Nelson also wrote that, without a motion for an expedited appeal, the NFL's argument assuming the 8th Circuit will rule before the 2011 season begins "seems unlikely." Now the league has just that, theoretically allowing more time this summer after the appeals process is completed for talks to resume on a new collective bargaining agreement. Courtordered mediation between the two sides is set to resume before U.S. Magistrate Judge Arthur Boylan on May 16, after four days of talks last month and 16 days of federally mediated negotiations earlier this year. Little progress has been reported. The old CBA expired on March 11, when the players broke up their union to file a federal antitrust lawsuit and the league enacted the lockout that lasted 45 days until Nelson's order. The lawsuit against the NFL is still pending before Nelson, but the legality of the lockout has essentially become the fight for now, with both sides arguing over whether Nelson has jurisdiction in the case and over the notion of irreparable harm. That claim has been prominent in nearly every court filing of the last two bizarre, bitter months as the NFL has stumbled through its first work stoppage since the 1987 strike. Commissioner Roger Goodell, speaking Monday on a conference call with Atlanta Falcons season ticket holders, said the NFL "doesn't need this uncertainty and clearly the fans don't need this uncertainty." "Hopefully, we can get to the core of the issues, sit down and resolve them," Goodell said. He added: "We shouldn't be where we are right now. We should address these issues far enough in advance and gotten an agreement that makes sense that can address the issues that I think both sides want to get done." The first preseason game is scheduled for Aug. 8. Goodell said the NFL does not have a "drop-dead date" for reaching an agreement to avoid missing games. "Whether they're training camps, minicamps, signing of players, all of that needs to get done sooner rather than later," he said. A day after Goodell spoke to ticket holders, New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees led about 40 players through a workout at Tulane in an effort to stay sharp while the lockout prevents the Saints from training on team property or contacting coaches. Bulls' Rose becomes NBA's youngest MVP winner Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose ended LeBron James's two-year reign as the NBA's most valuable player on Tuesday when he became the youngest winner of the sport's highest individual honor. Rose, who led the Bulls to the best record in the NBA this season, beat out perennial contenders James of the Miami Heat, Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers and Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic. "I want to thank my team mates and the coaching staff," an emotional Rose said at a news conference where he accepted the award. "You all push me every single day making sure that I play hard and play with passion." The 22-year-old All-Star, taken with the first overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, is the first Bulls player to capture the honor since Hall of Famer Michael Jordan claimed the last of his five MVP awards in 1998. Rose received 1,182 points and 113 first-place votes from a panel of 120 sportswriters and broadcasters combined with fan balloting, the NBA said in a NBA statement. Howard placed second with three

first-place votes and 643 points, James was third with four first-place votes and 522 points while Bryant had one first-place vote and 428 points. Rose averaged a career-high 25 points and 7.7 assists this season while guiding the Bulls to a 62-20 record that earned them the top seed in the NBA playoffs. When Rose arrived at the Bulls' training camp ahead of the 2010-11 season he openly wondered why he could not be the league's MVP, even though he did not receive one vote for the award last year. "I wasn't trying to be cocky at all," said Rose. "I knew that I put a lot of hard work in the summer, in the offseason and I just wanted to push myself, and that was about it." The Bulls, who lost the opening game of their bestof-seven Eastern Conference semi-final to the Atlanta Hawks on Monday, resume their series on Wednesday in Chicago. Source: Reuters

Islamic : Continued from pg 8 "And even if you bring to those who have been given the Book every sign they would not follow your qiblah, nor can you be a follower of their qiblah, neither are they the followers of each other's qiblah, and if you follow their desires after the knowledge that has come to you, then you shall most surely be among the unjust." (al-Baqarah, 145) About some of the mischievous deeds of the Children of Israel and how grave such deed were, Allah says: "But on account of their breaking their covenant We cursed them and made their hearts hard; they altered the words from their places and they neglected a portion of what they were reminded of; and you shall always discover treachery in them excepting a few of them; so pardon them and turn away; surely Allah loves those who do good (to others)." (alMa'idah, 13) "And when it is said to them: Believe in what Allah has revealed, they say: We believe in that which was revealed to us; and they deny what is besides that, while it is the truth verifying that which they have. Say: Why then did you kill Allah's Prophets before if you were indeed believers? And most certainly Musa (Moses) came to you with clear arguments, then you took the calf (for a god) in his absence and you were unjust." (al-Baqarah, 91-92) "O People of the Book! Why do you disbelieve in the Signs of Allah while you witness

(them)? O People of the Book! Why do you confound the truth with the falsehood and hide the truth while you know?" (Alu 'Imran, 70-71) Thus, when all's said and done, it did not really matter, nor could it increase anyone in piety and righteousness, if the people were asked to face a particular qiblah. It likewise did not matter if two different prophets and their respective peoples were instructed to face different qiblahs, because the whole of the earth and all the points of the compass are the creations of Allah belonging only to Him. Hence, as part of divine measures meant for man's guidance and support, Allah determines a prophet's and his people's qiblah as He wills, in line with His omniscience, wisdom and His infinite care and love for His servants. Facing different qiblahs by no means was an act of confusion or hesitancy. Nor was it an act of an intended rivalry or antagonism between people. Facing a qiblah did not make a community innately any better than another community which had to face another qiblah, just on account of facing and being affiliated with a different qiblah. In the same vein, following a prophet did not make anyone intrinsically better than someone else who had to follow another prophet, just on account of following and being associated with a different prophet. Indeed, in terms of their divine honorable missions and in terms of their unparalleled spiritual worth and merit, all the prophets were equal, all their revealed

messages were identical, and so were their qiblahs as well. What really mattered were people's genuine piety, righteousness and commitment to the realization of their prophets' callings. In the spiritual kingdom, the substance and the soul always take precedence over sheer appearances. The enlivened quintessence always outweighs deadening symbolism and formalism. Owing to this Islamic precept, Allah says concerning the flawed perception of the Children of Israel concerning the profundity and the real meaning of the qiblah subject, which they attempted to manipulate for their own vested interests: "It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards East or West; but it is righteousness -- to believe in Allah and the Last Day, and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast in prayer, and practice regular charity; to fulfill the contracts which you have made; and to be firm and patient, in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the Allah-fearing." (alBaqarah, 177) Allah also unequivocally states that no mere association with a prophet, or a revelation, or a qiblah, guarantees a person, or a community, salvation. It all boils down to one's

own genuine faith and avid submission. As this applied to all the prophets before Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), it also applies to him and his followers. It goes without saying, therefore, that just being a Muslim and a follower of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), albeit without shoring up that status with an alliance of faith and deeds, guarantees a person no happy ending on the Day of Judgment. Allah says: "And they say: None shall enter Paradise except he who is a Jew or a Christian. These are their vain desires. Say: Bring your proof if you are truthful. Yes, whoever submits himself entirely to Allah and he is the doer of good (to others) he has his reward from his Lord, and there is no fear for him nor shall he grieve. And the Jews say: The Christians do not follow anything (good), and the Christians say: The Jews do not follow anything (good), while they recite the (same) Book. Even thus say those who have no knowledge, like to what they say; so Allah shall judge between them on the day of resurrection in what they differ."
