Afghan civilians killed in NATO attack At least 14 civilians, including women and children, have been killed in a NATO air raid in the Afghan southern province of Helmand, local authorities say. US Marines in Helmand's Nawzad district called in air support after their

support Harper's plan to establish provincial senate elections and impose eight-year term limits. "Within our own caucus . . . there is disagreement, I think, on the length of the terms but I don't know anybody who disagrees with the concept," Conservative Senator Linda Frum told Postmedia News Wednesday. The government's leader in the Senate, Marjory LeBreton, denied that the government's new flexibility on Senate reform is due to fears that her own caucus would not back Harper's plans. "(I) haven't heard that from any senators at all," she said. Rather, LeBreton suggested, changes to term limits were being

base came under attack from small arms fire, the provincial government said in a statement. "During the air strike, two civilian houses were targeted, which killed 14 civilians and six others were wounded," it said. The statement said the dead included five girls, seven boys and two women. "ISAF are aware of the reports that civilians were allegedly killed in an ISAF air strike," Major Tim James, a spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, told the AFP news agency. Aslam, a local elder of Nawzad district, said he "lost 12 relatives while 10 others including children were injured" in the air strike. He said some shots were fired at ISAF helicopters which flew into the area, adding that the choppers returned after 10 to 20 minutes and fired rockets, killing the "innocent civilians". Afghan authorities said on Sunday NATO had killed 52 people, mostly civilians, in air strikes against fighters, as violence picked up in recent weeks with the start of the fighting season. Conservative senators balking at Senate reform agenda The prime minister might not have the numbers to push through the reforms he planned for the Red Chamber, despite his majority. That, say sources, is the real reason the government is showing signs it is willing to compromise by extending its proposed term limits for senators from eight years to 10 or 12, and promising a full study on the election of senators rather than the quick passage of its Senate reform package bills. Harper appointed more than 30 Conservative senators to the upper house in the last 2 1/2 years — precisely, he said, so he could pass his Senate reform agenda. But, during that time, some senators have publicly and privately suggested they've changed their minds and no longer

Pak-US forming joint intelligence team

WASHINGTON Pakistan and US are building a joint intelligence team to go after top terrorist suspects inside Pakistan, US and Pakistani officials said, a fledgling step to restoring trust blown on both sides by the killing of Osama bin Laden by US forces during a secret raid last month. The move comes after Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton presented the Pakistanis with the US list of mostwanted terrorism targets, US and Pakistani officials said Wednesday.

The investigative team will be made up mainly of intelligence officers from both nations, according to two US and one Pakistani official. It would draw in part on any intelligence emerging from the CIA's analysis of computer and written files gathered by the Navy SEALs who raided bin Laden's hideout in Abbottabad, as well as Pakistani intelligence gleaned from interrogations of those who frequented or lived near the bin Laden compound, the officials said. The formation of the team marks a return to the counterterrorism cooperation that has led to major takedowns of alQaida militants, like the joint arrest of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in 2003. All those interviewed spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss matters of intelligence. The joint intelligence team will go after five top targets, including al Qaida No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahri, and al-Qaida operations chief Atiya Abdel Rahman, as well as Taliban leader like Mullah Omar, all of whom US intelligence officials believe are hiding in Pakistan, one US official said. Another target is Siraj Haqqani, leader of the Haqqani tribe in Pakistan's lawless tribal areas. Allied with the Taliban and al Qaida, the Haqqanis are behind some of the deadliest attacks against US troops and Afghan civilians in Afghanistan.

Journalists rally to condemn Saleem Shahzad’s killing LAHORE: Journalists on Wednesday held a protest rally outside the Lahore Press Club (LPC) and shouted slogans against kidnapping, torturing and brutal killing of a colleague and senior journalist Saleem Shahzad demanding arrest of the killers. Saleem Shahzad was allegedly killed by intelligence agencies two days ago. According o sources, Shahzad had been kidnapped from Islamabad when he was busy performing his professional activities. His dead body, badly tortured and beaten, was recovered from Mandi Bahauddin. Shahzad worked for the Asia Times Online and Italian news agency Adnkronos (AKI) and delved into topics that were often considered sensitive in the country. He wrote his last article in the aftermath of the attack on PNS Mehran, which revealed al Qaeda infiltration in the navy. The protesters were carrying banners and placards condemning Shahzad’s murder. They strongly condemned the incident and said that the journalists were being punished for reporting

the truth and facts. They demanded that an independent commission should be formed to probe the murder. Talking to Daily Times, LPC Executive Member Muzamal Hussain Gujjar vowed that the killing of Saleem Shahzad would not silence the journalists. He said that voices of the people, especially journalists, cannot be hushed down since all the journalist community is united against such killings. Senior journalist Anjum Rasheed said that the establishment was trying to gag the voice of journalists and this incident was a clear reflective of it, however, the journalists would continue speaking the truth. He said that the killing of a prominent journalist like Saleem Shehzad was a message to all journalists that they should stop speaking the truth or face the consequences. LPC president Sarmad Bashir, vice president Zahid Abid, council member Baba Muzamal Gujjar, senior journalists Imtiaz Alam, Anjum Rasheed, Robina Shaheen, Ahmad Huma Ali, Shabeer Qadri, Nasir Ghani, Ziaullah Niazi, Aleem Usman, Hafiz Wadood and many others also took part in the protest. Separately, Labour Party Pakistan also observed a candlelight protest demonstration against Shahzad’s killing, alleging involvement of some intelligence agencies in it. They chanted slogans against some security agencies, carrying anti-establishment banners and placards. A large number of female activists of the party also joined the protest. Source: Times Daily

Date set for Mladic court appearance Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb general, will make his first appearance before a UN tribunal in The Hague on Friday, the war crimes court has said. Dutch Judge Alphons Orie signed the order on Wednesday morning, after Mladic spent his first night in an isolation cell Scheveningen detention centre, a UN prison. Mladic will be asked to enter pleas to 11 charges, including genocide, for allegedly masterminding atrocities throughout the 1992-95 Bosnian war, when he appears at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) on Friday. 69-year-old former general, who was caught last week after being on the run for 16 years, has been accused of genocide, persecution, extermination, murder, deportation, inhumane acts and cruel treatment. However Serge Brammertz, the prosecutor of the ICTY, said the charge sheet against Mladic had been updated, but

did not give further details. He said it could be possible to join his case to that of Radovan Karadzic, the former Bosnian Serb political chief, who is also on trial at The Hague, but no decision had yet been taken. Brammertz also told a news conference that he had asked Serbia to explain how Mladic had managed to elude arrest in recent years. "We want to verify who over the past five years have been instrumental in helping Mladic to stay in hiding and we want them to be accountable," he said. Earlier, Nerma Jelacic, a spokeswoman for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), said Mladic had undergone medical tests, but did not make any comments about his wellbeing. Mladic is accused of orchestrating the Srebrenica massacre of 1995, which saw around 8,000 Muslim men and boys rounded up and killed, and the siege of Sarajevo, which last-

ed 44 months and left an estimated 10,000 people dead. Mladic was extradited on Tuesday after Serbian judges rejected his appeal made on the grounds of ill health. His lawyer and family have said he has suffered a number of strokes and is not mentally or physically fit to stand trial. Snezana Malovic, Serbia's justice minister, said Mladic's extradition marked the fulfilment of Belgrade's "international and moral obligation". "Mladic is charged with the most serious crimes against humanity and the most serious violations of the international humanitarian law,'' she said in a news conference to announce Mladic's extradition. Mladic was arrested on Thursday in a farmhouse in northern Serbia belonging to a cousin. His capture prompted at times violent protests by Serb nationalists in Serbia and Bosnia. Away from Belgrade on Tuesday, in Banja Luka, the capital of the

Bosnia Serb entity of Republika Srpska, thousands of Bosnian Serbs rallied to show support for the former army commander. "General Ratko Mladic is our brave son who led Republika Srpska's army and us soldiers to defend it," Branislav Predojevic, who heads an association of Bosnian Serb veterans, told journalists at the start of the protest. "General Ratko Mladic is not a war criminal." Mladic now joins Radovan Karadzic, his former Bosnian Serb political chief, at Scheveningen detention centre, where he is currently on trial. Other inmates include Charles Taylor, the former Liberian president charged with committing murder, rape and sexual slavery as he sought control of Sierra Leone's diamond mines, and Thomas Lubanga, the Congo warlord charged with recruiting child soldiers. Egypt's Mubarak, sons to stand trial on Aug. 3 Former President Hosni Mubarak, who held absolute power in Egypt for nearly 30 years, goes on trial Aug. 3 charged with corruption and intentionally killing protesters, a court official said on Wednesday. The ousted leader's two sons will be tried at the same time on charges of corruption. The Middle East News Agency said Abdel-Aziz Omar, head of the Court of Appeals, set the trial date that will put Mubarak and his sons in the dock six months after the former president transferred power to a military council on Feb. 11. Mubarak's ouster caught the United States off guard and scrambling to revise its policy toward the Arab world's most populous country and a steadfast Washington ally. The revolt in Egypt followed quickly after a similarly surprising uprising in Tunisia that forced that country's longtime leader from. Since Mubarak's ouster ongoing revolts have swept Yemen, Libya and Syria, but entrenched leaders in those countries still cling to power and have been responsible for widespread violence and killings of their own people who are demanding democratic reforms. Mubarak could face the death penalty if convicted. At least 846 protesters were killed during the 18-day revolt. The location of the ousted leader's trial remained unclear, given that a government-appointed panel of physicians determined on Tuesday that Mubarak was too ill to be jailed while awaiting his appearance in court. The doctors said Mubarak's heart condition put him at risk of a sudden attack. The panel also reported to the country's general prosecutor that the 83-year-old former president was suffering from depression. Mubarak has been in custody at a hospital in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh since April. Since Mubarak's ouster, tens of thousands of protesters have demonstrated repeatedly to press for a trial that would hold Mubarak accountable. "The trial is not taking place as part of a smooth judicial process, but only in response to heavy pressures," says Bahey-eldin Hassan, director of the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies. The case, however, marks the first time in modern history that an Arab leader has been put on trial by his own people. Iraq's leader Saddam Hussein was toppled during the 2003 U.S. invasion. He was captured by U.S. forces and sentenced to death three years later by an Iraqi court that was under the quiet supervision of U.S. officials. Mubarak's prosecution has been complicated by health concerns. He has been interrogated in the hospital, but an order by the prosecutor to transfer him to prison during the investigation was overturned on grounds the prison health facilities were not sufficient to treat the former president's ailments. The charges against Mubarak assert he "conspired with the former security chief and other senior police officers" — already on trial in a criminal court — "to commit premeditated murder, along with attempted murder of those who participated in the peaceful protests around Egypt." The charges said Mubarak and the other officials were involved in "inciting some policemen and officers to shoot the victims, running some of them over to kill them, and terrorizing others." Mubarak and his sons also were charged with abusing power to amass wealth and enrich associates and of accepting bribes. A close associate of Mubarak, Hussein Salem, also was charged with bribery. The Mubaraks are accused of taking bribes in return for helping Salem with business deals. He has fled the country. The Mubarak sons are jailed in Cairo and facing investigation for other possible crimes. Source: Associated Press

Dozens dead in India bus crash At least 25 people have been killed in India's remote north-eastern region, after a bus carrying more than 40 people returning from a marriage party skidded off a wooden bridge and fell into a pond, police have said.

Syria's opposition dismisses amnesty gesture Syrian opposition members have rejected an amnesty offer by President Bashar al Assad as a token concession in order to contain a crisis that has called the legitimacy of the current leadership into question. The deal and the leadership has been "rejected and revoked", Ammar Abdulhamid, a Syrian pro-democracy activist, said. Exiled opposition leaders and members met on Wednesday to close ranks and forge a plan for a "new, democratic Syria", in a gathering of activists 10 weeks since an uprising against Baathist rule began. During the conference, members of the opposition will form a committee in order to liaise with the international community. The conference, hosted in the Turkish coastal city of Antalya, brings together a broad spectrum of opposition figures driven abroad over the last three decades; from Muslim politicians crushed in the 1980s to Christians escaping repression. Abdulhamid, one of the delegates attending the opposition meeting, said the gathering "hopes to create a representative body that can be accepted by the protesters inside Syria that can meet their demands in terms of the opposition trying to play a role in getting their voices heard by the international community". "This is not going to be any kind of government in exile," he told Al Jazeera, "simply a group of people who are willing to represent the movement internationally because the world cannot engage on a revolution that does not have any recognisable representatives. "Our hope is to fuel that kind of body on an interim basis until such time that the Syrian people can freely elect a

transitional council inside the country that can lead the country to democracy." Turkey's foreign minister has welcomed Syria's announcement of an amnesty for political prisoners but stressed it should be followed by "comprehensive reform," Anatolia news agency reported. "A general amnesty has been necessary for political reform," Ahmet Davutoglu said in a television interview. "The amnesty would be useful "in principle" but would fail to resolve Syria's turmoil unless followed by a reform process that would have the effect of "a shock therapy" on the Syrian people, he said. "I hope this is the first step of a comprehensive reform. This step is important, like a signal rocket." Turkey, whose ties with its southern neighbour have flourished in recent years, has piled pressure on al-Assad to initiate reform, but has stopped short of calling for his departure. While France, through its foreign minister, Alain Juppe, demanded "more ambitious and bolder" action from Syria: "I fear that it might already be too late," Juppe told France Culture radio. Juppe said he regretted that Western governments had been unable to get the UN Security Council to adopt a resolution criticising Syria and blamed the opposition of veto-wielding permanent member Russia for the failure. Syria has blamed the violence in the country on armed groups, Islamists and foreign agitators, saying more than 120 police and soldiers have been killed in the unrest. The European Union last week ordered an assets freeze and travel ban on Assad himself, the

Tanks, troops leave heart of Bahrain's capital

Tanks and soldiers left the heart of Bahrain's capital as emergency rule was lifted Wednesday, but authorities warned they were not easing pressure on anti-government groups in the Gulf kingdom. The military withdrew from the center of Manama but kept police at numerous checkpoints around the city. Bahrain imposed emergency rule in mid-March, giving the military wide powers to suppress demonstrations led by the country's Shiite majority against the minority Sunni rulers. Shiites, who have long complained of discrimination and political persecution, were inspired to rise up by other revolutions sweeping Arab nations around the Middle East and North Africa. At least 30 people have been killed since the protests for more rights and greater freedoms began in February in the Westernallied island nation, which hosts the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet. Bahrain invited 1,500 troops from a Saudi-led Gulf force to help suppress the unrest when emergency rule was imposed. The Saudi intervention infuriated Shiite power Iran. It underscored the fears of Iran among Sunni-dominated Arab countries of the Middle East, particularly among Gulf Arab leaders who fear that gains by Bahrain's Shiites could provide an opening for Iran to expand its influence on the doorstep of rival Saudi Arabia. The troops from Saudi Arabia and other Sunni-ruled Gulf countries will remain indefinitely in

Bahrain. They arrived to the kingdom in mid-March as part of the far-reaching crackdown that included hundreds of arrests of activists, journalists, political figures, athletes and Shiite professionals such as doctors and lawyers. After the military withdrawal Wednesday, riot police were sent to Shiite-populated outskirts of the capital to disperse some gatherings. But it was not immediately clear whether government opponents were trying to stage new protests. Dozens of police vehicles rushed to Diraz, a mostly Shiite village southwest of Manama that has long been the center of dissent before anti-government protests started. Heavy police presence was reported in other Shiite villages as people were leaving mosques after evening prayers. Armored police vehicles and riot police were guarding Pearl Square in an apparent attempt to prevent opposition supporters from heading there to reclaim the former center of Bahrain's revolt. The Justice Ministry on Tuesday called the demonstrations "criminal acts and abuses against the nation's security and unity" and warned that any further challenges will have "consequences." The sharply worded statement contrasted with a message from King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa urging "unity talks" with protest factions beginning in July — a gesture that falls short of opposition demands. On Tuesday, just before emergency rule expired, Bahraini prosecutors questioned Shiite opposition leaders in a special security court set up as part of the crackdown on anti-government unrest. Al Wefaq is the most influential of seven political groups in Bahrain's opposition movement. Eighteen Al Wefaq party members were elected to the 40-seat lower house of parliament last year, although the legislators resigned from the body in March to protest the government crackdown. The parliament is Bahrain's only elected body. It holds limited authority because all national decisions — including the appointment of government ministers — rest with the king. 14 dead in Germany as food poisoning crisis grows Germany held crisis talks amid reports that at least 14 people have died and hundreds are ill in an outbreak of a highly virulent strain of bacteria found on imported cucumbers. Belgium and Russia banned the import of vegetables from Spain, believed to be the source of at least some of the contaminated cucumbers. Madrid shot back saying it would seek financial compensation from the European Union for lost sales. More than two weeks after the food poisoning outbreak was first reported in northern Germany, the number of confirmed and suspected cases has reached 1,200, according to media reports. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Germany's national disease institute, said three deaths have been officially linked to the bacteria, but "in total about a dozen people have died according to regional authorities". These authorities later Monday announced two more deaths: a woman of 50 and a man of 75 -- bringing the toll to at least 14. The Stockholm-based European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has described the outbreak of the strain of E. coli as "one of the largest worldwide and the largest ever reported in Germany". Authorities in Germany warned against eating raw vegetables after traces of the bacteria were found on organic cucumbers from Spain last week. But officials said they are unsure what caused the sudden outbreak of enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) which can result in full-blown haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), a disease that causes bloody diarrhoea and serious liver damage and possible death. The outbreak has hit countries including Britain, Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands, but most these cases appear to involve people who had recently travelled to or from Germany. RKI has reported 329 confirmed HUS cases nationwide. German Consumer Affairs Minister Ilse Aigner held emergency talks with Health Minister Daniel Bahr and regional state representatives, telling reporters the crisis has "taken a European dimension". Burger said the

source of the contamination had not been definitively identified. Last week his organization said a study had shown that all those affected had eaten significantly above-average amounts of tomatoes, lettuce and cucumbers. European health officials said there was currently no indication that raw milk or meat is associated with the outbreak. Many German supermarkets and shops removed all Spanish-grown vegetables from their shelves. Spain in turn has hotly denied that its cucumbers were the cause of the outbreak and said it would seek compensation from the European Union for the "enormous damage" to its agriculture industry. Belgium said it was blocking cucumber imports from Spain, while Russia said it was banning vegetable imports from both Spain and Germany. The Netherlands, which usually exports vast amounts of vegetables to Germany, said sales had collapsed. German farmers also said consumers were boycotting their vegetables. Doctors remained unsure how to treat the disease which can result in total kidney failure. "We have 61 adults hospitalised, 21 in intensive care," a spokeswoman for the Eppendorf University Clinic in Hamburg, where most cases are being treated clinic, said Monday evening. The clinic has appealed for blood donations. "We are using between 500 and 700 bags of plasma per day, compared to 60 normally. We're running out of supplies," the spokeswoman said. Rolf Stahl, a neurologist at the clinic, said nearly a third of patients there had lost all kidney functions and were on dialysis. Doctors were experimenting with a new type of monoclonal antibodies drug, Eculizumab, which, while not officially approved, has been administered to 11 patients in a bid to save their lives. "The infection source remains active and we have to reckon with a growing number of cases," Bahr said. Source: AFP

Worry, resignation on potential cellphone cancer link A World Health Organization warning of increased brain cancer risk for cellular phone users had many Americans alarmed Wednesday but resigned to needing the devices to do their jobs. "It's really scaring me. Usually, I put it on a speaker, or I only use it in an emergency. And it is really scary because of my kids," Milite Andom, 49, a street vendor with teenaged children, told AFP. "They talk too much on their cells (mobiles), and I was telling my kids, but they do not want to hear it," Andom added. WHO cancer experts, the International Agency for Research on

Cancer (IARC), announced Tuesday after meeting in France that radio-frequency electromagnetic fields generated by such devices are "possibly carcinogenic to humans." The IARC cautioned that current scientific evidence showed only a possible link, not a proven one, between wireless devices and cancers. But the news was jarring to people whose lives have changed dramatically in recent years with the personal convenience of the cellphone, to the point where many spend hours with the devices pressed to their heads, day in and day out. When setting up homes, many people forgo traditional land lines, cells pressed to the ear. There are now about five billion mobile phones registered in the world, their use so ubiquitous that they have begun to eclipse traditional landlines. But health experts said it was still unclear what might happen with greater exposure over longer periods. "Everything new, they just throw it out there with no real testing. And 10 years later they tell you it is all bad for you," sighed bike messenger David Daudu, 31, who spends more than 12 hours a day on the street and on the phone. Asked if the warning might change his habits, Daudu was clear: "I have no option, workwise." His sentiments were echoed by construction foreman Michael Harris, 41. "What are you going to do?," asked Harris, who spends hours every day receiving and relaying instructions, cell at his ear. "You want to try to stay healthy, but this is the way business is being done today. Some mobile users reluctant to change their phone habits said they hoped someone would hurry up and disprove the WHO findings. "Two weeks from now, they'll probably come out with (a study) rebutting it," quipped bank teller Nick Bolden, 25. Source: AFP

Afghan : Continued from pg 1 Nuristan on Sunday said that 18 civilians and 20 police were killed by "friendly fire" during recent US-led air strikes against al-Qaedalinked fighters in his troubled northeastern province. Nuristan was the scene of heavy battles last week between the Taliban and Afghan security forces. The police and civilians were targeted on Wednesday after they were mistaken for al-Qaeda-linked fighters, Jamaluddin Badr said. "The policemen were killed due to friendly fire," Badr said, adding the air strike in the troubled district of Do Ab targeted a location that the officers had just taken from the fighters during clashes. "Civilians were killed because the Taliban ... [who] ran out of ammunition fled into the civilians' houses and then the civilians were mistaken with the Taliban and fired upon," the governor said. Major James of ISAF said those allegations were also being investigated. "ISAF has sent a fact-finding team to investigate the allegations about civilian and police casualties in Nuristan," he said. "Our initial reporting does not indicate civilian casualties in that air strike," he added. Civilian casualties in the US-led war against al-Qaeda-linked Taliban fighters is a sensitive issue and one of the main causes of a widening drift between President Hamid Karzai and his US backers. Karzai on Saturday ordered his defence minister, Abdul Rahim Wardak, to take over control of night raids from the NATO forces. Karzai's administration says most civilian casualties occur during such operations and that night raids of civilian homes drive war-weary Afghans against his already-fragile administration. There are about 130,000 NATO-led foreign troops in Afghanistan, fighting a Taliban-led insurgency launched after the 2001 invasion brought down their regime in Kabul.

THE HST FACING A CLAMOR An ongoing debate on the proposed 2% decrease is actually getting extremely hot. The issue is gaining momentum with speed, but the liberals have a lot of paving to do first to convince the British Columbians. Question of whether two billion dollars in tax savings for businesses in British Columbia is passed on to the consumers in the form of lower prices. At the BC liberal convention, Christy Clark promised to fix the HST while staying within her balanced budget commitments. However, a deficit of credibility still looms over her. For understanding the evolution of the sales tax systems in Canada, it is better to fully learn the current system that came about through the trials and errors. The experience shows that the value-added taxes (VAT) are less regressive than conventional sales taxes; yet, both take a toll on the poor and on smaller businesses which have complicated methods of deduction. Hence, the movement towards the harmonized sales tax (HST) is good for the functionality of the tax system, as well as it is much simpler and straight forward for all those involved in the process. Originally, under the terms of an agreement with Ottawa, there occurred a har-

monizing of the 5 % federal goods and services tax and 7 % provincial sales tax into single tax called the HST. Bound by the said contract, British Columbia cannot seek to renegotiate the rate until July, 2012. Currently, the ground reality suggests that balancing a budget has been a problem in BC, as 30% of government spending is wasteful, while, 40% of health care spending is also wasteful; hence, a huge deficit to worry about. Therefore, each drop of a point in the HST would add negatively towards ‘revenue losses’ of about $800 million yearly. That means the treasury will be only recouping $1.1 billion of the savings that the businesses are getting. Thus, the government has only one out of two options available at its disposal to choose for recovering: Either, an increase in the deficit or cutting services as the “lonely remedy” is available at the moment. In fact, lower income earners spend less of their money, as they are less fortunate and have less money to spend on items subject to the HST - a progressive tax as opposed to regressive. Furthermore, the HST also has a goal of trying to get rid of embedded taxes, thus preventing the cascading effect

from occurring during “manufacturing process” where consumers are unable to see or figure out. Through the HST, there has been constant effort to making compliance simpler and increasing the return from every tax dollar to public exchequer. Some people do realize that the HST makes production cheaper for manufacturers, because it gives businesses more cash flow to work with, and more room to grow investments. Most of all, now the businesses are allowed “HST refund” something more than GST refunds. Conveniently, most of the tax payers prefer zero income tax but have no problem with consumption tax i.e. HST. However, reducing the list of the goods and the services on which they pay HST will be a great favour to the tax payers. In other words, taxpayers in this case would not owe even a penny as tax on earnings; rather, they would pay tax when they purchase something. What a wishful thinking? Ridiculous is the promise to slash 2% off the current 12% by 2014. Which party will be in power by then-is hard to tell? Then there's a little problem with the fact that Christy is trying to please the taxpayers

with their own money by promising to give every family with children under the age of 18 a “one-time payment” of $175 per child as "transitional allowance.” Yet, that will be possible only if the HST survives. Surprisingly, no word on the fate of poor family with two children above 18 years of age - living at home, attending university and paying already high tuition fees. There is no second opinion that HST raises $1.8 billion “not from businesses,” rather it nails down the consumers for the specific purpose instead. "The recently announced ‘FIXES’ are certainly aimed at making the HST a better tax than the previous GST and PST. Though, HST represents a complete overhaul of the two-track system used in most provinces, a distance between the rich and the poor will continue to grow in length. The approach-- “let the rich get richer, and the rest may go to hell” has to change for pleasing the tax payers.

Coping With The Challenged Survivability By Tariq Mian When the Mid-East is still undergoing a ‘change over phase’ via public resentment, Pakistan faces a number of dire crises of its own. It is being targeted so severely by the highly trained and equipped militants including the BLA and Tehreek-e-Taliban (all guerrillas); while a lot of other anti Pakistan groups are roaming around - fully supported by the evil hand in hiding. Crazily, the united enemy is super active using state of the art weaponry” just to make Pakistan moan till its last breath. The intruders and the terrorists from within are using the brainwashed children as suicide bombers for the dirty work of fighting ‘proxy war’ in Pakistan just to put deep dents in it. The primary purpose of the enemy action cannot be anything other than spreading confusion and sense of insecurity so that the people have nothing but misperception about the competence of the Pak armed forces. Having exhausted patience, manufacturing current chaotic atmosphere is surely a 'destabilization made easy’ which would serve as a smokescreen to facilitate the desperately awaited robbery of Pak nukes on a fast track. Significantly scary indeed, yet the tsunami

like political turbulence at the same moment is quite ripe in the country for hammering a last nail in the coffin. The country, with series of past successive constitutional subversions, is currently at the mercy of the “NRO pardoned PPP lead government.” Sadly, so many parliamentarians, who benefitted under the repealed ‘national reconciliation ordinance’ were found to be sitting as legislatures based on their bogus degrees. Therefore, Pakistan has been slowly poisoned to let it be in such a muddy state of affairs from where it seems almost impossible to come out alive. Pakistan now stands too confused with regard to seeing ahead with an ultimate accuracy. The country has been fighting back against the "well engineered terrorism.” Rarely, a day goes by without a fatal incidence of terror, where a number of innocent lives are not lost. Even the most secured locations have been successfully penetrated deep inside by the commando-like militants just to ridicule the security of the most secured. Nevertheless, the recent attack on PNS Mehran Karachi is a clear war on Pakistan which couldn’t have been carried out without connivance of the insiders. Shamefully, the insensitive government is not taking precautionary measures essential to repulse such deadly attacks before they even occur. Ironically, the terrorists used night goggles, and they were behaving like professional commandos with hell of confidence and good calculation. On the other hand, non availability of night vision goggles to Pak soldiers was a major obstacle. Indeed, Government has failed to control the wave of terror attacks designed to destabilize the country. For sure, liability of the armed forces with regard to the protection of country’s strategic interests can’t be ignored at any point. “Democracy disorder, administrative paralysis and now the incidence of security lapses on the rise” - are a real cause of deep nervousness for the Pakistani nation. At the critical hour, any external meddling in Pakistan’s affairs shouldn’t demoralize Pak military or manipulate the so called democratically elected government to commit any contributory negligence. Ground reality still remains that Pakistan consists of a corrupt society, where people live in a heavily flawed system. The people, at all levels, are only familiar with a corrupt environment around them. Naturally, they look for the short cuts and an easy way out. Therefore, they tend to give or receive bribe, use their connections in order to reach their goals. Beyond a doubt, some in the populace are more vulnerable to the ulterior motives of foreign elements. flaged enemy is hell bent to inflict deep dents in Pakistan’s security apparatus. As mentioned above, currently Pakistan is going through the unpredictable episodes of guerrilla warfare carried out by the suicide bombers. Pathetically, the internal criminal elements, out of greed for heavy cash, are helping the external elements to destabilize the country. Therefore, the greedy insiders and the national or international media for spreading misinformation are to blame for the whole mess. Preferring personal interest over national interest is not only immoral but also unconstitutional. Sadly, the defiant rulers and the incompetent functionaries have failed to care much about following the Law and Constitution as required

Syria : Continued from pg 5 latest in a string of sanctions against his regime . Stepping up pressure on Assad to halt weeks of relentless violence, the EU earlier this month imposed an arms embargo and targeted the president's innermost circle, including his brother and four cousins. Activists say that at least 10,000 people have been arrested since the start of the popular uprising almost two months ago. Accurate information from Syria is difficult to confirm, as journalists have largely been denied access, but human rights groups say that more than 1,000 protesters have been killed since the uprising started. Do we have good morals? By: Sayyid Abul Ala Mawdudi

Having good morals is a prime responsibility Character formation is the most important aspect of Islamic personality. That is why we can see that the goal of Islam - of the concepts, worships and teachings relating to

values, attitudes, morals and behavior is to create an Islamic personality. The Prophet has stated the foremost purpose of being sent down in this world and the method of his mission in the following words. "I have been sent for the purpose of perfecting good morals." Inculcating good manners among the people and purifying them as per the noble teachings of Islam was the ultimate responsibility given to the Prophet and after him the believers are to set an ideal example of Islamic Character before the public. The Qur'an has made it very clear that following the footsteps of the Prophet in the high esteemed character and morals is a vital aspect of being an example Muslim. God says: "And by the mercy of God, you dealt with them gently and had you been severe and harsh hearted, they would have broken away from about you. So pass over (their faults) ask (God's) forgiveness for them; and consult them in the affair. Then when you have taken a decision, put your trust in God, certainly God loves those who put their trust (in God)" (Al-Qur'an 3:159) So a Muslim must possess noble character which attracts people to him. When God

sent Prophet Moses and Haroon to Pharaoh He said to them: "You tell him soft words." He may accept the guidance and fear God. It is natural that people like those who speak gently and decently and hate those who are harsh and hard in behavior. The great message which has left an indelible impression on the history was the unique personality of Prophet Mohammad . God has praised him. "And verily, you O Mohammad are on an exalted character" (Al-Qur'an 68:4) The Prophet practically proved how to fulfill this noble goal to his companions. The purpose of which was nothing else but to strengthen the moral character of people so that the world of beauty and perfection may be illuminated before their eyes and they may try to achieve it consciously and with knowledge. The Qur'an says: "verily as for those who believe and do righteous deeds, certainly we shall not suffer to be lost the reward of any one who do his righteous deeds in the most perfect manner" (Al-Qur'an 18:30).

Treat others with generosity Islamic character is divine character. It is to treat others with the same generosity and charity as Almighty God shows to man. Islam has set the norms in this pattern by saying "If you are merciful, forgiving and magnanimous, God is the forgiving, the merciful. That is to say that we are supposed to adopt a posture similar to God's in our dealings with others. God forgives people their mistakes and does not deprive them of His mercies because of their errors. Thus magnanimity becomes the cardinal principle of Islamic Character.

Helpfulness and benevolence towards others The highest standard of Islamic character entails helpfulness and benevolence towards others. The very existence of a believer is beneficial to others since Islam teaches the lowest branch of belief is removing the disturbance from the way. So the believer passing through a way is useful to others. His words are useful to every one. Because Islam has taught "whoever believe in God and the People often complain the Senate is illegitimate and not democratic but, MacDonald said, "the Senate wasn't set up to be elected." "It was set up to be a deliberative body and not an elected body and it's been that way for 147 years and for the most part, it seems it has worked pretty well," he said. Most judges are appointed and nobody says they lack legitimacy, the Tory senator Rajab added. 1 "We need to have a good 2 healthy debate on this," he 3 said. The Liberals' leader in the 4 Senate, James Cowan, said 5 he's pleased the govern6 ment is showing some signs 7 of flexibility. 8 "This isn't one of those issues where you say any 9 reform is better than no 10 reform at all. The system of 11 governance that we have in 12 Canada was put together 13 pretty carefully . . . and I think most people would 14 say, it has worked pretty 15 well," he said. Sources: Vancouver SunPostMedia News

Canada : Continued from pg 1 contemplated, five years later, because many constitutional experts testified early on that eight-year limits would allow a prime minister who serves two mandates to appoint the whole chamber. "I was fully expecting that the Senate would have probably amended (the eight-year term limit bill), they were probably going to go with 12," she said Wednesday. Several sources told Postmedia News that many Conservative senators — including some new members who pledged to support Harper's Senate reform agenda as a condition of their appointment — are concerned about the bills. And so, despite having a healthy five-member majority in the Senate — and 10 more seats than the Liberals — the Harper government is now willing to amend its term limit bill and will not ram its Senate election bill through the chamber to give those who have concerns about the bill time to study it further. "There are a lot of unintended consequences from an elected Senate," Conservative Senator Michael MacDonald told Postmedia News. "(Not only) in terms of its relationship . . . with the House of Commons, its relationship with the government of the day and the relationship of the (senators) with their own provincial governments. These things have to be looked at because . . . the long-term implications are pretty significant."

life here after, let him tell good things to keep quiet."

Patience Patience is another ingredient which makes the believers character commendable and appreciable. It has been taught that patience is one half of faith. Marvelous examples of patience on various occasions can be drawn from the life of the Prophet . Sincerity, honesty, humility, justice, patience, straightÆforwardness, keeping promise ... Islamic ethics and moral as stated in the Holy Qur'an and Sunnah embrace the consideration of all those moral excellencies known to the world, such as sincerity, honesty, humility, justice, patience, straightÆforwardness, keeping promise, charity, meekness, politeness, forgiveness, goodness, courage, veracity, sympathy, tolerance, decency, coÆoperation and other ethical instruments and rules of conduct recommended and upheld by Islam. A luminous feature of Islamic system of life is that it teaches comprehensive manners to all mankind with mercy, sympathy and consideration.

Speak the truth The first among the deeds which tops the list of good manners is to speak the truth and be steadfast in it regardless of its consequences. The Prophet teaches: "The best of crusades is to speak the truth before a tyrant ruler. 'Speak the truth no matter how bitter it may be.' Keep away from ill thinking because ill thinking is the greatest falsehood." Avoid Jealousy, backbiting, falsehood ... By prohibiting jealous, backbiting, falsehood, wickedness and all other harmful things Islam arrange the ground steady for emulating divine principles of Islamic character which provide a peaceful living in this world and the hereafter. The major criterion in Islamic living is the eternal words of The Prophet that "Actions rest on motives."

What are Good Manners? Good Manners mean the commission of those virtuous deeds by which human perfection is achieved which entitles a human being, in its true senses to be referred to as the best of creation. The effect of adopting these manners, propounded by Islam is that humankind receives tranquility, peace, harmony, happiness, love, affection, justice, equality and whatever a human being desire

Volume 3, Book 49, Number 870: Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "There is a Sadaqa to be given for every joint of the human body; and for every day on which the sun rises there is a reward of a Sadaqa (i.e. charitable gift) for the one who establishes justice among people

for a healthy and peaceful living. Responsibility towards God and responsibility towards fellow beings All these teachings are formed considering the responsibility entrusted upon human beings. It is clearly mentioned that humankind has a dual responsibility to perform. One is in relation to himself and his obligations to the Creator, the other one is in relation to his external world and commitments to the creatures and fellow beings. The former has to express in a process of self-development, physical, intellectual and spiritual. In other words, man's responsibility is to invite to God, so to say, exercise His right to dwell in the individual and urge him to use properly the balance set in his nature. The idea is in conformity with the Qur'anic exhortation. "O you who believed if you help (the cause of) God, He will help you and set your feet firm" (Al-Qur'an 47:7).

Obligations to one's self and obligations to society The other responsibility lies in developing social consciousness and in caring for the welfare of others. The two terms may as well be styled as "Obligations to one's self " and "obligations to society." The two types of responsibilities are not to be regarded as exclusive. They are merely two faces of one and the same attitude towards life, of the same activity proceeding from it and signify the character of the mind one has to develop. It is this mind which matters in determining responsibility for every human action. Sayyid Abul Ala Mawdudi (September 25, 1903 - September 22, 1979), was a Pakistani journalist, theologian, Muslim revivalist leader and political philosopher, and a major 20th century Islamic thinker.

Does Your Medication’s Label Lead to Information Overload? By Denise Mann Reviewed by Laura J. Martin, MD May 27, 2011 -- If you flip through a consumer magazine and come across a prescription drug ad or even glance at a medication package insert, you will likely find a long list of potential side effects, many of which may be frightening. Some doctors contend that this is information overload and may have a chilling effect on some people who could benefit from

certain prescription medications. A new study in Archives of Internal Medicine puts a number on it. The average prescription drug label lists 70 potential side effects, and many of the more commonly prescribed medications list around 100-such risks. One medication in the study lists 525 potential side effects. “It has gotten out of control,” says Jon Duke, MD, an assistant professor of medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis and a researcher at the Regenstrief Institute. “These are 20,000- to 30,000-word massive documents.”

Warnings on Drug Labels In 2006, the FDA set rules to make drug labels easier to read and understand and

reduce "overwarning” on drug labels, but this may have had the opposite effect. In the new study, researchers analyzed 5,600 drug labels comprising 500,000 side effects. Antidepressants and antiviral drugs tended to have the longest list of potential side effects, as did some newer medications for restless leg syndrome and Parkinson’s disease. Medications prescribed by psychiatrists and neurologists had the most complicated labels, and drugs used by dermatologists and ophthalmologists were the least complicated. “We put a number on it so we can begin to make a real case to FDA, drugmakers, and other stakeholders to address this head on,” Duke says. He and his colleagues are developing software to help filter, prioritize, and personalize relevant drug safety information. He says he envisions “a dynamic label that uses electronic medical records to pull in the information that is most relevant.” Unless and until such changes are made, “the key thing is to ask your doctor about side effects because doctors are pretty good filters,” Duke says. “There are some things that most people will never, ever get yet patients are often afraid to take the medicines because of how scary the labels are." Check With Your Doctor or Pharmacist Drug companies are now required to do post-marketing studies of their drugs after they are approved, says Olveen Carrasquillo, MD, an associate professor and chief of general internal medicine at the University of Miami in Florida. As a result, a lot more information is being reported about medications’ potential side effects. Previously, these regulations were too lax and certain highly-prescribed drugs were

found to cause serious side effects after approval, but the pendulum may have swung too far in the other direction, Carrasquillo says. “I get patients who will call me and say, 'This drug can cause 100 things. Why did you prescribe that to me?’” Carrasquillo says. “I explain that the companies are required to report this information, and I discuss the major side effects that they have to worry about." Some people may just decide to stop taking a potentially life-saving drug because of a tiny risk of a rare side effect. “If you have a concern, don’t stop on your own, communicate with your doctor,” Carrasquillo says. “Every drug has a side effect and every treatment has an upside and downside,” says

Diane C. Pinakiewicz, the president of the National Patient Safety Foundation President in Boston. She says the problem is that this information is not disseminated in a “patientfriendly” manner. “The intent was pure, but it is just so consumer-unfriendly,” Pinakiewicz says. “Some package inserts are so long that you could wear them like a shawl." Her advice: Talk to your pharmacist. “Ask them to talk you through anything you are concerned about. … Always ask questions to get as much information as you can and have someone help you put risks into context, so you don’t jump to the wrong conclusion."

Congratulations

Midlands Doctors Association UK works on projects in Pakistan By: Dr Syed Yusuf Iftikhar Consultant Surgeon, Royal Derby Hospitals and Chairman MDAUK On Saturday 8 October 2005, a powerful earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck Northern Pakistan. For six minutes the earth shook, devastating parts of the North Western Frontier Province as well as large sections of Pakistan-administered Kashmir. When the earth finally stopped moving, 87,000 people were dead, tens of thousands lay injured and over three million people were left homeless. The Pakistani government appealed to the world for international help. Aid in the form of both, materials and manpower, left many countries; none as rapidly as from Britain. A trauma team from Nottingham & Derby flew into northern Pakistan one week following the tragedy. The team worked in a field hospital consisting mainly of tents. Over one thousand patients were treated in the five and a half days they were there. 134 major surgical procedures were carried out under general anaesthetic. Organisational skills during major incidents are a vital resource and a special area of expertise of this team. The team helped to create a medical facility with a functioning Emergency Department, a fully operational operating theatre and in-patient care facility. A system of ward round and a standard for in-patient care was established. Pretransfer stabilisation and triage systems were set up. The original team, on returning to the UK, being touched by their impact on so many people decided that they would build and run a hospital in Pakistan administered Kashmir. Thus the charity Midland Doctors Association UK (MDAUK) was born. A pre-need assessment was undertak-

en to investigate the value of a tertiary hospital in the region of Northern Pakistan. Based on information provided with regards to the lack of quality medical services in the region, the MDAUK finalised the project site to Muzaffarabad, in Pakistan administered Kashmir. British, American and Canadian nurses and doctors have agreed to provide medical expertise to the project on a charitable basis. With such generosity, this hospital will become a National Medical Institute for Pakistan aiming to improve health delivery across the region. The hospital is being built in a staged approach according to funding and is overseen closely by the charity chairman, Dr Syed Iftikhar. The hospital will be earthquake proof and with over 200 tonnes of steel forming the foundation - there is no similar building in the region. The hospital will be on run on a wholly charitable basis. The British Government has allowed it’s UK Department for International development to accredit MDAUK as a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO). Trustees, particularly surgeon and Chairman Dr Iftikhar have appealed to friends, colleagues and donors all over the world to help

set up this facility. Help has come from many quarters including a drive by the Charity Canadians for Global care to support this cause. For this $ 2.4 million project, so far MDAUK has raised $ 1.3 million. MDAUK is confident in being able to raise the required funds because donors have seen what the charity can deliver on the ground. In the September 2010 floods, MDAUK was instrumental in providing humanitarian relief to North and South Pakistan. MDAUK demonstrated to the large International NGO’s that the organisation has significant expertise and capabil-

ity in Pakistan. Aid including feeding the hungry and starving, working in partnership with the Pakistan Medical Association to treat sick children. MDAUK has also rebuilt over a hundred houses in the North of Pakistan and is in the process of rebuilding a village in the South of Pakistan hit by the floods. The main focus of the MDAUK remains the hospital and with that fundraising activity continues. Please visit MDAUK for more details of the project. World Partnership Walk at Stanley Park in Vancouver By Abdul Rehman Allibhoy On May 29 World Partnership Walk was held and was a great success. It was attended by over 4000 people from different walks of life. Entertainment was great and was thoroughly enjoyed by participants. Beside entertainment, Global Village was a great attraction, where people were told how and where the donation will be used internationally. Visitors were also told that 100% of funds collected will go to support Global Poverty Internationally i.e. no administration cost. People enjoyed the delicious food and Music all day after the World Partnership Walk. Among many other Food stalls, Surrey’s Gulberg fine Cuisine first time served its delicious Food in this Mega walk event. By 3.45 p.m. a sum of $ 1.875 million were collected against the target of $ 2 million. It is expected that collection will exceed the target when all donations are counted. The success of the Partnership Walk reflects hard work, determination and zeal of Volunteer of the Ismaili Community. The World Partnership Walk is Canada's largest annual event dedicated to raising funds and increasing awareness to fight global poverty. Now in its 27th year, the Walk is organized by volunteers in ten cities across Canada, and attracts tens of thousands of Canadians united in a common effort to bring hope and renewal to some of the poorest communities in the world. In 2010 nearly 40,000 Canadians came together to rise close to $6

million. The World Partnership Walk took its first strides in 1985, thanks to the verve of the 17 volunteers from Vancouver's Ismaili Women's Organization Committee. Driven by a desire to give back to the impoverished countries they had grown up in, the group persuaded nearly 1,000 walkers to don their sneakers for the fight against global poverty and raised $55,000. The passion and commitment of these founding members lives on to this day. Since the Walk's inception, its corporate, individual and team supporters and volunteers have together raised more than $60 million in support of international development initiatives supported by Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC), making it the largest and most successful event of its kind in Canada. http://www.worldpartnershipwalk.com

ISREAL’S QUEST FOR A CONDITIONAL PEACE IN MIDDLE EAST? By Muhammad Afzal Malik On May 24, 2011the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed to a joint meeting of US Congress. He received a rapturous reception from lawmakers on both sides of the political divide; Democrats and Republicans. It was his second address to the US Congress. He received more than 56 “standing ovation” from the participants during his speech. He said, “Israel has no better friend than America. And America has no better friend than Israel. We stand together to defend democracy. We stand together to advance peace. We stand together to fight terrorism. Congratulations America, Congratulations, Mr. President. You got bin Laden. Good riddance! In an unstable Middle East, Israel is the one anchor of stability. In a region of shifting alliances, Israel is America’s unwavering ally. Israel has always been pro-American. Israel will always be pro-American. My friends, you don’t need to do nation building in Israel. We’re already built. You don’t need to export democracy to Israel. We’ve already got it. You don’t need to send American troops to Israel. We defend ourselves. You’ve been very generous in giving us tools to do the job of defending Israel on our own. Thank you all, and thank you President Obama, for your steadfast commitment to Israel’s security. I know economic times are tough. I deeply appreciate this.” Netanyahu said, “Israel wants and needs peace but repeated his flat rejection of a return to what he called the "indefensible" borders that existed before the 1967 Mideast war. He also restated Israel's refusal to entertain the return of millions of Palestinian

refugees and their families to land in Israel. And, he maintained that Jerusalem, claimed by both sides as their capital, could not be divided. Israel's Prime Minister pledged to make "painful compromises" for peace with the Palestinians, but said he would not agree to any deal that threatens Israel’s security or its identity as a Jewish state. Now this is not easy for me. It's not easy, because I recognize that in a genuine peace we will be required to give up parts of the ancestral Jewish homeland,'' he said, referring to the occupied West Bank. In outlining his peace vision, Netanyahu said Israel would not negotiate with terrorists and urged Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to rip up a power-sharing agreement that his moderate Fatah faction has signed with the militant group Hamas — which does not recognize Israel's right to exist — and shelve efforts to win U.N. statehood status unilaterally. "I say to President Abbas 'Tear up your pact with Hamas and sit down and negotiate, make peace with the Jewish state.” "The Palestinian attempt to impose a settlement through the United Nations will not bring peace. It should be forcefully opposed by all those who want to see this conflict end,” Netanyahu said. "Israel will be generous on the size of the Palestinian state, but will be very firm on where we put the border with it. This is an important principle," he said in a landmark address to the US Congress. "We recognize that a Palestinian state must be big enough to be viable, to be independent, to be prosperous." But he warned that Israel couldn’t return to the "indefensible" borders which existed in 1967, as US

President Barack Obama has insisted should be the basis for negotiations. "Any peace deal must take into account the dramatic demographic changes that have occurred since 1967. The vast majority of the 650,000 Israelis who live beyond the 1967 lines reside in neighborhoods and suburbs of Jerusalem and greater Tel Aviv." And he further warned: "Jerusalem must never again be divided. Jerusalem must remain the united capital of Israel." “This is the land of our forefathers, the Land of Israel, to which Abraham brought the idea of one God, where David set out to confront Goliath, and where Isaiah saw a vision of eternal peace. No distortion of history can deny the four thousand year old bond, between the Jewish people and the Jewish land, “he said. Netanyahu said “When I last stood here, I spoke of the dire consequences of Iran developing nuclear weapons. Now time is running out, and the hinge of history may soon turn. For the greatest danger facing humanity could soon be upon us: A militant Islamic regime armed with nuclear weapons. Militant Islam threatens the world. It threatens Islam. I have no doubt that it will ultimately be defeated. It will eventually succumb to the forces of freedom and progress. It depends on cloistering young minds for a given amount of years and the process of opening up information will ultimately defeat this movement. But like other fanaticisms that were doomed to fail, militant Islam could exact a horrific price from all of us before its inevitable demise. A nuclear-armed Iran would ignite a nuclear arms race in the Middle East. It would give terrorists a nuclear umbrella. It would make the nightmare of nuclear terrorism a clear and present danger throughout the world. I want you to understand what this means. If we don't stop it, it's coming. They could put the bomb anywhere. They could put it on a missile. They're working on missiles that could reach this city. It could be on a container ship in a port, or in a suitcase on a subway. Now the threat to my country cannot be overstated. Those who dismiss it are sticking their heads in the sand. Less than seven decades after six million Jews were murdered, Iran's leaders deny the Holocaust of the Jewish people, while calling for the annihilation of the Jewish state. Leaders who spew such venom, should be banned from every respectable forum on the planet. But there is something that makes the outrage even greater: The lack of outrage. In much of the international community, the calls for our destruction are met with utter silence. It is even worse because there are many who

rush to condemn Israel for defending itself against Iran’s terror proxies. But not you. Not America. You have acted differently. You've condemned the Iranian regime for its genocidal aims. You’ve passed tough sanctions against Iran. History will salute you America. My friends, this must come to an end. President Abbas must do what I have done. I stood before my people, and I told you it wasn’t easy for me, and I said… "I will accept a Palestinian state." It is time for President Abbas to stand before his people and say… "I will accept a Jewish state." Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas slammed a peace vision presented by Israel's Prime Minister and suggested the Palestinians now have their sights firmly set on seeking U.N. recognition of a Palestinian state in September, 2011. He further said, “ Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu's speech to the U.S. Congress was filled with "falsehoods and distortions." Abbas' comments marked the first time he responded publicly to a total of four speeches by Netanyahu and President Barack Obama over the past week. Abbas praised Obama's parameters for a Mideast peace deal, saying they lay a positive foundation for negotiations. Obama said border talks should be based on the pre-1967 Mideast war lines, with mutually agreed land swaps, meeting a longstanding Palestinian demand. The Palestinians want to establish a state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, territories Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war. They have said they are willing to consider minor border adjustments through land swaps that would enable Israel to annex some of the largest of dozens of Jewish settlements it has built on occupied territory. Abbas said he would consult with Arab League representatives in coming days to discuss the next steps. The Palestinians have developed alternate strategies to negotiations with Israel, largely on hold since 2008, and a bid for U.N. recognition of a Palestinian state in the 1967 borders is a centerpiece. Both Israel and the U.S. oppose this strategy, calling instead for the negotiated solution that has been the cornerstone of two decades of peace efforts. Abbas said negotiations remain his first choice but that if that option is closed, "we are going to go to the option of (U.N. recognition in) September 2011." "Our goal is not to isolate Israel nor to challenge its legitimacy," Abbas said. "This is not a unilateral act. The unilateral act is (Israeli) settlement expansion." Now the question arises, will Netanyahu's speech lead to the peace in reality or it will create more obstacles in the peace process?

AlHaaj Muhammad Owais Raza Qadri Muhammad Owais Raza Qadri was born on 8th. July 1970 in Pakistan. He is Intermediate in academic qualifications. He has performed several Hajj and Umras, the first Umra being in 1992 while the first Hajj in 1996. Apart from Holy Places, Pakistan is Owais Qadri's favourite country. Owais Qadri's best friends are books. His favourite dish is Bar B.Q. and favourite colors are black and white. He plans to open a Naat Academy very soon, Insha-Allah-o-Rabb-ul Aalameen. AlHaaj Muhammad Owais Raza Qadri is undoubtedly one of the most heartily loved, popular and legend of Sana Khawans, known for his melodious voice and unique style of expressing his great love and respect with the Holy Prophet, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). He emerged with a revolutionary voice and unique style with a zeal to surpass his own targets and a per-

former par excellence.. Owais Raza Qadri was married in 1994 and has four children: two daughters and two sons named Mohammad Anees Raza and Mohammad Afeef Raza. He started reciting naats at the age of 8 only. He was inspired by AlHaaj Yousuf Ashrafi (late) who was his ideal Naat Khawan also. He did not take special naat classes but acquired the companionship of good, pious "Ushaqaan-e-Rasool". All naats are his favorites. He has traveled to many countries of the world spreading the message of Islam and love for the Holy Prophet including England, Dubai, Iraq, Iran, India, Hijaz-eMuqaddas South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Malawi, Kenya, Syria etc. Owais Qadri's services for the promotion of naats were acknowledged by the Government of

Community Open House at SFU Surrey

Pakistan when he was given the award of Best Naat Khawan in 2007. As a token of respect, he was also weighed in silver by Barkati Foundation in 2008. Regarding his future plans, Owais Qadri states that he will continue reciting naats and work for getting people back to the path of Sala'at-o-Sunnat. Muhammad Owais Raza Qadri advises new naat khawans that Naat Khawani is Ibaadat and before reciting any naat essential knowledge should be collected about it and special care should be taken to ensure that it is not objectionable by Islamic Shariah. It is best to check all naats with a learned scholar. Furthermore, they should restrain from such acts which can be criticized by others. They should be true and practical Muslims, i.e. not that talking about love for the Holy Prophet and murdering the Sunnah of the

Holy Prophet by shaving off the beard and not showing regularity in daily prayers. Addressing the young generation, Muhammad Owais Raza Qadri remarks that undoubtedly success lies within the fact that we must walk on the path guided to us by Allah Rabb-ul Aalameen and His Prophet , leave the way of strangers and always believe in death. Acquire adequate knowledge of Islam and recite at least one Ruku of the Holy Quran (Kanzul Iman) with translation.

Living In Reality By: Shabnam Khan Family Counsellor Life is not as promising as it seems at times! We, as humans have to go through so many obstacles in life whether we like it or not. This can raise a lot of challenges at work, family problems, marital problems, peer pressure and the list will definitely go on. In my previous articles I have mentioned the fact that so many people are living in denial. Don’t pretend that “things” are o.k. OR will be o.k. one day. Changes does not happen by itself. It’s what you are doing to make these changes that matters. How long are you prepared to torture yourself and the people you love and care for in life?” Is that what you deserve? Now do the people have the resources to handle and overcome these so called issues and problems. Many people will suffer rather than seek the appropriate or professional help. Some due to their name and reputation in the society, some due to lack of information, some scared of the end result or simply because seeking profession-

al help is considered a taboo and hence there has always been a lot of reluctance in seeking counselling services in our community! No matter what the reasons are, it’s your right to make your own choice’s in your life. I have come across a lot of cases where people continue to survive with a entirely fake picture of their changed lifestyle without seeking the professional help. My request is to address these little problems as they come across instead of waiting for it to become a huge problem. When your rage reaches the maximum level, situations can be really tough to handle. What could be possible, becomes impossible because you were not prepared to change. You got used to live a life full of torture, anger, guilt, name calling, harassment and so on. If you have chosen yourself to be in this situation, you are the only one who is responsible to get yourself out of this situation. Your courage, determination, trust, motivation and self-esteem are the keys for your success. You can say so much but results don’t come without your action! Remember you deserve the best in your life! Life is very precious, live it the right way and see that you’ll love every moment of it. There is always a beginning........, shabnamsk@hotmail.com

teenagers: Islam gives you focus and an understanding of who you are and where you are going, which most of "teen culture" does not. Tip # 8 : Get Them Involved In Volunteer Work With You If you are already involved in the community, get your friend to help out. Ask them to make a flyer for one of your youth group’s events or brainstorm for ideas about activities to hold this school year. This involvement makes them feel part of the Muslim community and deepens your friendship, since you are now working together on something beneficial for both of you. Make sure you thank them for their contribution. Tip # 9 : Ask Them 4 Fundamental Questions As your friendship develops, you will notice the topics you discuss may become more serious. You may be discussing, for instance, future goals and plans. Khan recommends four questions to ask that can steer the topic to Allah and Islam: a. Where am I going in life and what would make me really happy deep down inside? b. What do I believe? c. Who should I be grateful to? d. Did I get to where I am today without the help of anyone? Tip # 10 : Emphasize Praying 5 Times A Day Before Any Other Aspect Of Islam A person’s main connection with Allah, on a daily basis, is through the prayer five times a day. Don’t emphasize any other aspect of Islam until your friend starts making a real effort to pray five times a day. Emphasize the direct connection one has with Allah in prayer. If they are facing a problem, tell them to pray, and to ask Allah for help in Salah and outside this time. When possible, make it a point to pray together during your "hang out time". After all, you’ve got your own struggles to deal with: trying to explain why you pray to hostile teachers, Hijab discrimination, standing up in class when the professor attacks Islam, dealing with parents who think you’ve gone nuts because you’re growing a beard, or all the other difficulties faced by a number of practicing Muslim youth? Islam was never meant to be an individualistic faith, reserved for the "chosen few". Muslims have a duty to spread the Deen, and practicing Muslim youth, whether beginners, activists or leaders have a crucial role to play. "Allah has put them in a position that perhaps no one else is in," notes Sheema Khan, former Muslim Youth of North America (MYNA) advisor for eastern Canada. "They have the means to communicate with their peers, they have an understanding of what they’re going through plus they have the guidance of Islam." Here are some tips and advice which can help from other Muslims, many of whom have been there and done that: Tip # 1 : Make Your Intention Sincere All work we do should ideally be for the sake of Allah. That includes the task of bringing someone closer to Allah. That of course means this should not be connected to arrogance, thinking you’re the teacher and everyone else should be lucky you’ve embarked on a crusade to save them. Guidance is from Allah. Make Dua and make sincere efforts and remember Allah can also misguide you if He wills (we seek refuge in Allah from that). Tip # 2 : Practice What You Preach Not practicing what you preach is wrong and you will lose the confidence of anyone, young or old, once they figure you out. Don’t do it. Tip # 3 : Use The Quran & Seerah (biography of the Prphet peace be upon him) As Dawa Guides Read and understand those chapters of the Quran which talk about how the Prophets presented the message of Islam to their people. Read the Seerah (for some good Seerah books) to see especially how the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) brought Islam to so many different

people, including young people. As well, talk to Dawa workers, and check out manuals they may have written, like Yahiya Emerick’s How to Tell Others About Islam. Tip # 4 : Talk To People As If You Really Dont Know Them Don’t assume you know someone just by looking at them. The Muslim guy who you’ve never seen at Juma at your university is a "bad Muslim". Maybe he was never really taught Islam and has no idea what importance Friday prayers have in Islam, especially for Muslim men. Tip # 5 : Smile Did you know the Prophet was big on smiling? But many "practicing" Muslims seem to have "their faces on upside down" as one speaker once said-frowning and serious. Smiling, being polite and kind are all part of the manners of the Prophet, which we must exercise in our daily lives. If we want to approach others with Islam, we have to make ourselves approachable. Smiling is key to this. Tip # 6 : Take The Initiative & Hang Out With Them Take the first step and invite someone you may have spoken to a couple of times to sit at lunch together, to check out a hockey game or invite them over for Iftar in Ramadan. Also, share difficulties, sorrows and frustrations. Help with homework, be a shoulder to cry on when depression hits, or just plain listen when your friend is upset, discuss common problems and KEEP THEIR SECRETS. There are few things as annoying as a snitch and backstabber. But an important note: if the problem is of a serious nature,(i.e. your friend is thinking of committing suicide or is taking drugs), notify and consult an adult immediately. Tip # 7 : Show Them Islam Is Relevent Today, Right Here, Right Now Young people may think Islam is too "old fashioned" and not in tune with the modern age. Prove this wrong. Show how Islam is really about relating to Allah, which any human being can do, anywhere, anytime. Allah is always closer to you than your jugular vein and He hears and knows everything. Encourage friends to ask Allah’s help during tests, exams, and in dealing with problems at home with parents and siblings. Also point out how Islam relates to

pray, that is the first step to other aspects of Islam like giving up swearing, treating parents with respect or dressing Islamically. Tip # 11 : Help Instill Confidence In Adults Adults, like B a r t Simpson’s dad Homer, are considered bumbling idiots in the eyes of "teen culture". Your job as a young Muslim is to help turn the tables on this false and unIslamic belief. All you have to do is this: when a Muslim adult does something good (i.e. saving someone’s life, donating money to a worthy cause, the Imam gives a good speech, taking good care of his/her family) bring it up in the course of your conversations with your friend and praise the adult in question. Doing this regularly may not only change your friend’s perspective, but could lead to them seeing their own parents in a more respectful way. Tip # 12 : Support Them Even When They Become More Practicing Remember, just because a person starts practicing Islam more regularly, this does not mean everything will be okay from this point onwards. There will still be hard times, difficulties. There may be times when your friend may have doubts about his or her newfound practice of Islam. Be there to reassure them.

Shahid Afridi 'quits' international cricket After weeks of growing tension and speculation Shahid Afridi, Pakistan's recently axed one-day captain, has announced his retirement from the international game. It is, however, a "conditional" retirement in protest against the way he has been "humiliated" by the PCB, a temporary selfimposed exile more than a permanent retirement. Afridi said he was ready to reverse his decision if and when a new board came into power. "There is nothing bigger than a man's respect, and the way the board has treated me, there is a limit to everything," an emotional, angry Afridi told Geo TV from London, where he is currently preparing for a Twenty20 stint with Hampshire. "I will not play under this board. If a different board comes in, I will definitely return but I cannot play under this board. When you have been humiliated like this, by dishonourable people, what is

the point in playing on? "The way I've been treated... the future doesn't look too good. I can't play under a board that doesn't respect its players. Because of this, under protest, this is a conditional retirement."

Afridi, a Pathan who has lived in Karachi all his life, also hit out at "a Lahore lobby that has been filling the chairman's ears against me," reviving an issue of regionalism that has been festering for some time now, and shows few signs of stopping; in recent weeks, Karachi officials have protested loudly against the PCB for not selecting players from the city. The decision caps for now - a saga that began last December effectively, when the board first began to hesitate in appointing Afridi captain. He was made leader for the New Zealand ODI series and then, only two weeks before the tournament began was he made captain for the World Cup. The impermanent nature of his appointments was one of the reasons for Afridi's unhappiness. "I wasn't told anything when I was made captain, I wasn't given a tenure, I wasn't told what my squad would be, nothing," Afridi said. "I took a

broken team along with me. When I took over the Pakistan team was in the middle of the spot-fixing crisis. Then the Zulqarnain Haider case happened but my side fought both against England and South Africa in the ODI series. Then we beat New Zealand, we got to the semis of the World Cup and beat West Indies there as well. Maybe I have become a thorn in their throats. It's better that I step aside for now as I have respect for myself." But the tipping point came upon Afridi's arrival back from the Caribbean, growing differences between him and coach Waqar Younis over matters of selection being another concern. Then, he told reporters, "Although the differences in team management are not such which could not be solved, I feel everyone should do his job and need not interfere in other's work". NHL returns to Winnipeg with Thrashers sale

HEAT TAKE ON MAVERICKS IN NBA FINALS The celebration is underway in Winnipeg. Thousands of hockey fans gathered downtown in the Manitoba capital on Tuesday after the National Hockey League announced its return to the city. A decade and a half after the Winnipeg Jets left town to become the Phoenix Coyotes, Winnipeg is getting another shot at top-flight professional hockey. True North Sports and Entertainment purchased the Atlanta Thrashers from Atlanta Spirit and will move the team to Winnipeg’s MTS Centre, marking Canada’s seventh NHL franchise. The sale and proposed relocation to Winnipeg must still be approved by the league’s board of governors at a meeting on June 21. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman presided over the league when the NHL left Winnipeg in 1996, but said he’s pleased the city is getting a franchise again. “To be able to come back to, if you will, right a wrong, that’s always an extraordinary thing,” Bettman said. The deal had been rumoured for weeks, but it wasn’t until the wee hours of Tuesday morning that the documents were signed. No purchase price was immediately announced, but it’s believed True North paid about $170 million US to acquire the Thrashers. The price includes a relocation fee of about $60 million. True North chairman Mark Chipman was part of a group of Winnipeg businessmen who tried to keep the Jets in Winnipeg in the mid-1990s. They were unable to keep the team then and Chipman and True North acquired the minor-league Manitoba Moose and turned his attention to leading the drive to build the MTS Centre, a 15,000-seat arena located downtown. The building was opened in 2004 with the Moose as its anchor tenant and will now host Winnipeg’s new yet-to-be-named NHL team. “Such a broad range of emotion that I’m trying to reconcile today,” Chipman said.“Obviously all along we’ve been aware of how important participating in this league is to our community. We were front and centre when it left . . . and it was a very, very difficult, disappointing process. “But I will say this, as important as this may be, what’s equally if not more important is the resiliency this community has shown over the past 16 years. And that’s why we’ve gotten another opportunity. We didn’t wallow in selfpity.” Chipman is joined in the venture by media mogul David Thomson. Although he doesn’t live in Winnipeg, he’s glad to be part of bringing the NHL back to the city. “There’s a heartfelt sense of community in Winnipeg and in Manitoba. I’ve always felt inspired by the leadership, by the ambitions,” Thomson said. “There’s been more than a tinge of regret in me, as in all other Winnipeggers and Manitobans that the Jets left.” Source: Globe and Mail

Former MVP Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks will attempt to capture their first NBA title as they face Miami's Big 3 in the NBA Finals. Game 3 of the series goes Sunday as the series shifts to Dallas.
