Riot police use tear gas after violence erupts in Vancouver
Thousands of BC parents & students join Burnaby petition drive to put ‘Families First’
Angry, drunken revelers ran wild Wednesday night after the Vancouver Canucks' 4-0 loss to Boston in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals, setting cars and garbage cans ablaze, smashing windows, showering giant TV screens with beer bottles and dancing atop overturned vehicles. Source : AP
Looting breaks out as riots intensify in Vancouver Unhappy Vancouver Canucks fans are rioting in downtown Vancouver, and people are looting merchandise from major department stores. As the riot moved in a wave throughout the city, looters smashed windows at the Sears outlet on Robson Street and wreaked havoc inside the store.A group of young people unhappy about the Canucks' loss to the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final broke windows at The Bay on Georgia Street and rioters were looting merchandise from the store from the Seymour Street side. Several other people could be watching the fire from the second floor of the store, taking pictures and waving their hands in the thick black smoke. Huge crowds gathered around the London Drugs location on Granville Street as people trashed the inside of the store and made off with stolen goods.Rioters danced around a burning van outside the store, tossing bottles into the blaze to create small explosions. A BMW was set on fire nearby, and an apparently drunken man jumped straight into the flames, falling back seemingly
unscathed. Police officers on horseback moved into the riot area outside the store to clear out crowds shortly after the looting began.Witnesses in the middle of the riots reported serious injuries in the crowds, but St. Paul's Hospital was on a Code Orange lockdown and staff members were barred from leaving the building. Eyewitnesses told CTV News early in the riot that an angry mob had flipped over a police car near the intersection of Nelson and Granville streets, and that rioters were smashing windows at a pizza place nearby. Several other police cars were set on fire later in the night in other areas, and rioters were tossing firecrackers at the blazes. Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson condemned the "hooligans" responsible for the riot in interviews with reporters. "It's a bunch of angry young man who are fighting, smashing things, lighting cars on fire," the mayor said."It's absolutely shameful and disgraceful and in no way represents the city of Vancouver." B.C. Public Safety Minister Shirley Bond told
Thousands of BC parents, students and teachers have joined Burnaby's Parents’ Voice movement in a petition drive to place Premier Christy Clark and the BC Government on notice that discrimination against children and violation of parental and religious rights and freedoms will not be tolerated in BC — even if it is camouflaged as an ‘anti-bullying’ measure. Supporters of Parents’ Voice and representatives of the BC Muslim Association will deliver petitions filled with thousands of names to Premier Clark’s office at Canada Place on Tuesday, June 14th, 2011. A press conference will be held in front of Canada Place at 11 a.m prior to delivery of the petitions. “The Premier’s slogan has been ‘Families First’,” said Charter Lau, spokesman for Parents’ Voice. “That must include recognizing the rights of all parents and children — not just special interest groups and their unions.” Parents’ Voice is a parent and student movement

House panel puts bar on US aid to Pakistan
WASHINGTON: US lawmakers expressed growing scepticism about the war in Afghanistan on Tuesday as a House panel approved $649 billion in defence spending for the 2012 fiscal year, including $118 billion for wars abroad. The bill imposes limits on American aid to Pakistan and creates a special bipartisan group to review the US role in Afghanistan. The panel agreed to a proposal by Representative Jeff Flake to tighten congressional oversight over $1.1 billion in counterinsurgency funds approved for Pakistan. Congress would have 30 days to review administration spending plans before 75 percent of the funds could be released. Lawmakers urged President Barack Obama to step up the pace
of US troop withdrawals from Afghanistan and endorsed tougher oversight of US spending in Pakistan as the House of Representatives Appropriations Committee debated defence spending for next year. The panel approved the $649 billion in defense spending bill on a voice vote and forwarded it to the full House for consideration, expected later this month. The Senate is still working on its version of the bill. The two houses must pass the same bill before sending it to Obama for his signature. The $649 billion for the Pentagon's base budget plus overseas operations like the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan was nearly $22 billion less than the spending approved for the current fiscal year, mainly due to falling costs associated with the Iraq war. But Democratic Representative Norman Dicks warned the cost of the conflict in Afghanistan was becoming unsustainable. "I am increasingly convinced that the administration has to accelerate the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan and at the same time work for a political settlement," Dicks said. While endorsing the president on Iraq and Afghanistan, Dicks said it "is not going to be realistic" to continue funding the wars at the current levels in coming years. "Are we going to educate the American people, are we going to take care of the unemployed, or are we going to continue doing nation-building in Afghanistan?" he asked. "I think that is a choice we are all going to have to consider in the days ahead." The bill approved by the committee cuts $8.9 billion from Obama's request for 2012 defense spending, mainly by delaying procurement and development costs for some weapons systems to later years.
Criticism doesn't weaken institutions: Nawaz PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif has said that criticism doesn’t weaken institutions but latter can be strengthen through reforms. He expressed these views in a meeting with Pakistan ExServiceman Association (PESA) delegation here at Punjab House. Mian Nawaz Sharif and PESA agreed that Pakistan is under attack from within and outside and we need to find solutions quickly. PESA delegation was led by Admiral (R) Fasih Bukhari which met with Mian Nawaz Sharif along with selected PML-N parliamentarians to discuss the critical situation faced by Pakistan arising in the back drop of the Abbottabad and PNS Mehran raids scenario and crises which has resulted there off. Participants emphasized and dilated on various subjects in the discussion. It was mutually agreed that if we all continue to identify ourselves with different ideals, our adversaries and
enemies shall continue to manipulate us on all issues. Air Marshal (r) Masood Akhtar presented a Suggested National Security Policy for Pakistan. PML-N panel showed keen interest in the proposed definition of Common Identity, National Purpose and Vital National Interests for the nation. It was agreed that no war can be won and no peace can be made without a clear national consensus on these values. The presentation also derived a Suggested Counter-Insurgency and a Counter-Terrorism Policy for the current complex crises that Pakistan faces. Mian Nawaz Sharif took keen interest in the consequent debate and it was decided that a group of two to three members from both sides would be formed to brainstorm and crystallise these crucial ideas for securing the nation. It was hoped that other like-minded parties and stake holders from the government, opposition, media, bench and civil society will join PML-N and PESA to strengthen this initiative.

Sudan air attacks causing 'huge suffering'
Sudan has stepped up air attacks in South Kordofan, a state on the south Sudan border, causing "huge suffering" to the civilian population and endangering emergency aid, the United Nations says. Heavy fighting between forces from the north, including both the Sudanese Armed Forces northern army - or SAF - and government-back forces, and fighters aligned to the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), the former southern rebel group - has raged across South Kordofan since June 5. "We are extremely concerned about the bombing campaign, which is causing huge suffering to the civilian population and endangering humanitarian assistance," Kouider Zerrouk, a spokesman for the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), told the AFP news agency. "The intensive bombing by SAF in the past week is continuing in Kadugli and Kauda, where jet fighters dropped 11 bombs at 1030 this morning, apparently targeting an airfield." Two bombs landed very close to the UNMIS compound in Kauda, which is situated just 150 metres from the airstrip. Fears had been growing among civilians of intensified SAF air attacks on former rebel strongholds, where the indigenous Nuba peoples fought on the side of the
SPLA during the devastating 1983-2005 civil war between north and south. UNMIS was unable to provide details of casualties from the latest violence in South Kordofan. Late on Monday, a Sudan rights group said that more than 65 people had been killed in air raids carried out by Antonov bombers in different locations around South Kordofan over the past nine days. The Sudan Democracy First Group (SDGP), in a six-page report, accused the northern army of pursuing a genocidal campaign in the state, targeting the Nuba peoples and supported by the Popular Defence Forces, a feared civil war militia that now forms part of the Sudanese army. A northern army spokesman, Al-Sawarmi Khaled, denied that Khartoum's military actions were killing civilians, saying fighting was only between the army and rebels. But speaking to Al Jazeera on Tuesday, Tawanda Hondora, of the Africa department at Amnesty International, the London-based human-rights monitor, said: "Civilians currently are fleeing to other areas out of South Kordofan. Hondora said the Sudanese armed forces have been going to the UN camps and taking people from there. The fighting in South Kordofan has raised tensions at
a sensitive moment for Sudan, with the south set to declare independence in less than a month. The split has been complicated by a number of unresolved issues, including where to draw the common border and how to divide oil revenues. Southerners voted to secede in a January referendum which was promised in a 2005 peace deal that ended decades of north-south civil war that killed two million people. It was announced on Monday that north and south Sudan had agreed "in principle" to demilitarise the disputed central region of Abyei and to allow an Ethiopian peacekeeping team to come in. The agreement was reached after two days of talks between Omar al-Bashir and Salva Kiir, the respective leaders of Sudan's north and south, according to Barney Afako, a spokesman for the former South African president, Thabo Mbeki, who is helping lead the negotiations. The political status of Abyei and issues such as oil revenues are yet to be discussed, Afako said. To assist with the demilitarisation, the Ethiopian government offered to send in troops to oversee security so that civilians who fled can return, he said. Source: Al-Jazeera
Canada Post locks out employees, suspends operations across country Canada Post has shut down its operations nationwide after nearly two weeks of rotating strikes and failed negotiations with its union. The Crown corporation says that the Canadian Union of Postal Workers' rotating strikes have led to estimated losses of $100 million. About 50,000 employees have been locked out, Canada Post spokeswoman Anick Losier told Postmedia News Tuesday night. "It was a difficult decision but it's the best one right now. We don't want to become a burden on taxpayers so we needed to do this today to be able to be selfsufficient," she said. "We're still really far apart on some issues and we haven't seen any real progress at the table." Only 23 postal workers from Carbonear, N.L., Sioux Lookout, Ont., and Salmon Arm, B.C., were slated to begin walkouts Tuesday night at 11 p.m. ET, a day after the rotating strike hit two of the country's largest urban centres, Toronto and Montreal. On Monday night, 15,000 workers walked off the job at 11:30 p.m. ET for 24 hours leading to "piles of undelivered mail," according to CUPW. Union representatives in Toronto and Montreal accused Canada Post management of "penalizing" union members for using their right to strike after the Crown corporation reduced hours of work and locked out employees. "We believe that a lockout is the best way to bring a timely resolution to this impasse and force the union to seriously consider proposals that address the declining mail volumes and the $3.2-billion pension deficit," said a Canada Post news release. Two CUPW members told Postmedia News early Wednesday morning that the union had no comment at the time but would issue a statement later in the day. After seven months of failed negotiations, the union called a strike two weeks ago. It was the first in 14 years. Union negotiators have asked for a wage bump of 3.3 per cent in the first year, followed by 2.75 per cent in the subsequent years of a four-year contract. Changing the sick leave plan has also caused contention between the two sides; Canada Post is fighting for a short term disability plan to replace banking sick days. The Crown corporation's officials offered a 1.9 per cent increase a year, with wages starting at $18 an hour for new hires and increases capping at $26 for new and existing employees. Employees also receive a benefit pension plan and up to seven weeks vacation despite a 17 per cent decline in letter mail volume since 2006. "After seven months of negotiations, Canada Post continues to demand major concessions, including unsafe work methods, a 22 per cent wage reduction for new hires and the elimination of a sick leave plan that members have had for over 40 years," CUPW national president Denis Lemelin said in a statement issued at the end of May. Only small communities should receive mail while employees are locked out, Losier said. Federal Labour Minister Lisa Raitt told CBC News earlier Tuesday she was concerned that people won't bring their business back to Canada Post once the negotiations are finally settled because the rolling strikes have turned the public away. "I can tell you I'm extremely disappointed with the two parties not being able to reach a deal," Raitt said, after she said she would table legislation in the House of Commons to force Air Canada employees back to work just after their strike started. "They too have an obligation to Canadians to get this done." Within the last week, the rolling strike hit Winnipeg, Hamilton, Moncton, Victoria, Calgary and Edmonton along with several other cities. Premier Clark pushes for B.C. to keep the HST With HST ballots arriving in the mail and recent polls positioning her government on the losing side of the historic referendum, Premier Christy Clark on Tuesday made a pitch to British Columbians to follow her lead and vote in favour of keeping the controversial tax. At a press conference at a Richmond strawberry farm, Clark marked the NO side of a mock HST ballot after discussing the merits of the tax and addressing the confusion surrounding the wording of the ballot question. (A Yes vote means scrapping the tax, a No vote means keeping it.) “None of us want to pay back the $1.6 billion to the federal government . . . none of us want to create a $3 billion hole in our budget,” said Clark, adding the budget hole would affect health care and education. “The math is very, very simple: British Columbians have a choice between a 10 per cent HST and a 12 per cent PST/GST.” Clark said it was not her intent to try to tell people how to vote, however, the timing of her address — polls last week showed opposition to the tax still outweighs support for it — coupled with her repeated endorsement of the HST, had critics and pundits pointing to a government in crisis mode. NPD leader Adrian Dix said the content of the premier’s address indicates that the government has run out of ways to persuade British Columbians to their side of the HST debate and is now relying on scare tactics. He also called the premier’s suggestion that the referendum is a choice between a 10 per cent and 12 per cent tax dishonest. As part of last month’s so-called fixes to the
HST, Premier Clark said the government would reduce the tax from 12 per cent to 10 per cent by 2014, should it pass the referendum. Dix has warned against trusting the government’s promise and said there is no way to ensure that the changes will be made. “Their core message is to threaten British Columbians with the consequences,” said Dix. “Ms. Clark is threatening people and using public money to do it.” During the press conference, Clark also wrongfully accused ex-Social Credit Premier Bill Vander Zalm, the leader of the Fight-HST campaign, and Fight-HST supporter Bill Tieleman of being responsible for the wording of the “confusing” ballot question. In reality, the question was written by acting chief electoral officer Craig James. “Premier Clark should clarify her facts,” said Tieleman, adding it’s misleading to say vote is about whether or not British Columbians want a 10 per cent HST over a 12 per cent GST/PST, given the full changes won’t come into effect for another three years. “We did not have any right to authorize it, to veto it [or] to change it.” University of Victoria political science professor emeritus Norman Ruff said British Columbians can expect more pitches like Tuesday’s ahead of next month’s voting deadline. “There is a lot running on it,” said Ruff. “She now owns the HST as much as [ex-premier Gordon] Campbell. So if it does go down, it would be a major blow for her attempt to lay the ground for a general election.” Source: The Province

Japan cabinet approves Fukushima nuclear compensation Japan's government has approved a plan to help the owners of the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant provide trillions of yen in compensation, but political manoeuvring could delay payments to tens of thousands of victims of the country's nuclear crisis. The cabinet's approval of the scheme on Tuesday came after the plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power [Tepco], said a further six workers had exceeded the annual legal dose of radiation, underlining the risks they face as they struggle to stabilise overheating nuclear reactors by early next year. Under the bill, the government would set up a fund and issue special bonds to enable Tepco to pay compensation that the Mainichi newspaper said could reach US$124bn (£75bn). Other power utilities would be asked to contribute to the fund, and Tepco is expected to repay the full sum over an, as yet, unspecified number of years. In return for state help, Tepco will have to cut costs and turn its management over to the government "for a certain period of time". The measure's fate is far from certain, however. Some government and opposition MPs oppose the use of public funds to help Tepco, and the prime minister, Naoto Kan, is still under pressure to resign immediately despite surviving a recent no-confidence motion by promising to step down once the crisis is under control. The current parliamentary session is due to end on 22 June, but the Kan administration is pushing to extend it in the hope of passing the compensation package, as well as an emergency budget to fund post-tsunami reconstruction. News that the bill had gained cabinet approval lifted investor confidence in Tepco, but concern persists that the company will look to consumers to help fund damages claims in the form of higher electricity bills.
The trade and industry minister, Banri Kaieda, denied media reports that the government had already approved a 16% increase in electricity charges from next April. "The government will make sure that any costs passed on to consumers will be kept to a minimum," he said. Tepco and two other power utilities are coming under pressure to end their involvement in nuclear power, with groups of investors expected to raise the issue at shareholders meetings at the end of the month. The risks facing the thousands of workers who have taken part in the operation to stabilise Fukushima Daiichi were underlined when Tepco said six more were feared to have exceeded the legal limit of 250 millisieverts [mSv] a year, bringing the total to eight. The limit was raised from 100mSv a year early in the crisis to allow workers to spend more time at the plant, where nuclear fuel in three reactors suffered meltdowns. In the worst cases, two control room workers were exposed to well over twice the legal limit, Tepco said, as it released preliminary results of radiation tests on almost 2,400 workers who were based at the plant in March, when radiation levels were at their highest. The health ministry also said on Monday that at least 90 others have exceeded the original limit of 100mSv, including several who are nearing the 250mSv level. Experts believe that exposure to more than 250mSv increases the chances of a person developing cancer in their lifetime by 1%. Hidehiko Nishiyama, a spokesman for Japan's nuclear and safety agency, described the findings as "extremely regrettable". Tepco said none of those affected have showed signs of ill health, but added that they would need long-term monitoring.
Scores jailed as strike hits Bangladesh
Scores of Bangladeshi political activists were given onthe-spot jail terms on Sunday, as police cracked down on a 36-hour nationwide strike over changes in the electoral system. A police spokesman in the capital, Masud Ahmed, said that 21 opposition activists were jailed and about 40 others, including an ex-minister and an air force chief, were detained, amid sporadic violence across the country. The latest convictions brought the number of activists jailed in Dhaka since Saturday night to 76, with scores more detained elsewhere, as the strike brought the impoverished South Asian country to a halt. "Magistrates deployed in the city have handed out the jail terms on-the-spot. Among them 55 have been jailed up to three months on Saturday night and 21 people to one month each on Sunday," he told AFP. The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its key Islamist ally, Jamaat-e-Islami, are enforcing the strike in protest against changes in the electoral system, which they say unfairly favour the incumbent government. Police said 9,000 policemen and 3,000 paramilitary Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) were deployed in Dhaka after five vehicles, including three buses, were torched on Saturday, creating widespread panic. Another bus was set ablaze in the city's Mirpur suburb
on Sunday, police said. Shops, businesses and schools were shut on Sunday -- a weekday in the Muslim-majority nation - and major roads and highways were deserted. RAB intelligence chief Colonel Ziaul Ahsan told AFP that paramilitary forces were patrolling Dhaka streets in vans but the situation was largely peaceful. At least 12 people were detained in the second biggest city of Chittagong where 2,000 policemen were deployed to avert violence, said local police chief Mesbahuddin Ahmed. Cargo delivery at the Chittagong, which handles 90 percent of the country's foreign trade, ground to a halt. The strike also hit investors as the benchmark index at the Dhaka Stock Exchange plunged 5.23 percent -- the steepest one-day fall in nearly four months. The strike was called after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from the ruling Awami League party announced plans last month to scrap a decades-old system under which a caretaker government takes over during election time. The system is designed to cover three months over each polls in Bangladesh, which has had a long tradition of political violence since independence in 1971. BNP leader Khaleda Zia has said her right-of-centre party would not contest any future polls if the government scrapped the caretaker system, which oversaw four successive polls. Major Islamist parties have backed Zia's move. The party threatened further action and condemned what it said was the arbitrary imprisonment of its activists. "They are using a black law to hand out jail terms to our leaders and activists. If the repression continues, we'll announce tougher non-stop strike," BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told reporters. The strike is the fifth the BNP has called since it suffered a crushing defeat in December 2008 elections. A strike last Sunday saw protesters clash with police, leading to dozens of arrests. EU votes 210 mln euros for bacteria-hit farmers The European Union on Tuesday approved 210 million euros ($303 million) in emergency aid for vegetable farmers hit by the fallout from the killer E. coli bacteria outbreak, despite opposition from Spain and France. The aid is destined to producers of cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, courgettes and sweet peppers withdrawn from the market since May 26 as a result of the outbreak in northern Germany, which to date has killed at least 37 people, including the first child, who died on Tuesday. Under the deal, farmers will be paid a maximum 50 percent of the usual producer price in June, with a final figure confirmed on July 22 once member states confirm the volumes to be covered. Spain, France, Poland and Slovakia voted against the package after demanding more help for farmers producing a wider range of fresh vegetables. Spanish farmers say they have lost 225 million euros every week since the crisis erupted. "This is an important signal for fresh vegetable growers because I was very keen to show that Europe can react quickly when it needs to," said agriculture commissioner Dacian Ciolo. "I am relieved that the source of the contamination has now been identified," he said. "I am optimistic that consumption will pick up very quickly." Farmers were further hit when Russia imposed a blanket ban on vegetables from the 27nation EU bloc, a move blasted by EU officials. Moscow agreed at a summit with the EU on Friday to lift the ban although it was not immediately clear when the announcement would come into effect. Vegetable sprouts grown at a farm in the northern German village of Bienenbuettel were identified as the cause of the outbreak of the virulent E. coli strain EHEC-0104, which so far has affected 14 countries. A source attending the talks said the package won 163 votes in favour with 90 against and 92 abstentions. Abstentions included the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Austria and Romania, with voting numbers weighted according to country population. Source: AFP
Burnaby : Continued from pg 1 that promotes respect and equality for all students, parents and staff and resists the Burnaby Public School Board’s proposed policy No. 5.45, which provides special privileges to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual, Queer and Two-Spirited Intersex students without providing the same privileges to all students. When supporters of Parents’ Voice asked questions on how the policy will be implemented and how students who do not conform to the opinion endorsed by the policy will be disciplined, the Burnaby Public School Board Trustees stonewalled. To date, the Trustees have failed to provide lawfully requested information and refuse to answer these crucial questions. The Burnaby School Board has announced that changes will be made to the policy — but those changes will not be open to public input, nor will they be made available for public review prior to the June 14th meeting where it is reported, by some media, that the policy will be adopted. Parents’ Voice believes the actions of the Trustees are both reprehensible and illegal. "The violation of parental trust, political abuse of the classroom and blatant disregard for the Charter values of equality and freedom from discrimination will not be tolerated," said Lau. "Board Chairman Larry Hayes has been caught with his political pants down, and has no policy protocol to pull them back up with,” said Parents’ Voice supporter, Gordon World. He added, “This Board will be held accountable — politically and in the courts. The Trustees have failed, administratively, ethically — they have violated the BC Human Rights Code and misled the public and the media — they alone are responsible for creating this costly fiasco.” Parents’ Voice has said it will Boycott the June 14, 2011 meeting. Supporters of Parents' Voice have come by the hundreds to the last three board meetings and, according to media reports, have outnumbered opponents ten to one. Parents' Voice believes that it is a waste of time to attend any additional Burnaby Public School Board meetings when the Burnaby Trustees are wilfully deaf and blind to valid parent and student concerns. The Parents’ Voice movement now appeals to Premier Christy Clark to demonstrate leadership and protect the children of Burnaby from discrimination. Reported by Daud Ismail

FROM HACKTIVITY TO WIKILEAKS Although, “WikiLeaks-management” claims to be a non-profit media organization solely dedicated to provide the public through an innovative and secure way, yet the actions of WikiLeaks have actually angered Washington by publishing almost half a million of the most confidential documents. The Wiki Leaks group does claim to have published material of ethical, political and historical significance while hiding the identity of the sources, thus providing a universal way for the revealing of suppressed and censored injustices. Beyond a doubt, a huge set of classified documents including the leaked United States embassy cables was released into the public domain – is actually detrimental to the US foreign Policy. Nevertheless, the documents would give the people an insight into the US foreign handling, yet publishing of the secret cables has raised some genuine concerns about the safety of innocent people. The question-Whether Wiki Leaks has violated the law by publishing classified information is yet to be seen with the passage of time. But the disclosure of these documents has definitely given birth to several painful human rights issues namely the torture scenarios, free speech, and the way Businesses would react to government pressure to censor. As Wiki Leaks founders are a mixture of different ethnic groups of various nationalities including Chinese dissidents, journalists, mathematicians, and start-up company technologists from the United States, Taiwan, Europe, Australia, and South Africa, they con-
tinue to maintain that their organization has never released any document without duly verifying. In fact, Julian Assange, an Australian internet activist and director of the Wiki Leaks, says that the submitted documents are reviewed by a group of five experts. Encouraged by Wiki Leaks, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil expressed his solidarity with Julian Assange following his arrest in the UK. The government of Ecuador made an offer to Julian Assange to establish residency in Equador. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev issued a statement calling on non-governmental organisations to consider "nominating Julian Assange as a nobel prize laureate. Hugo Chavez, President of Venezuela, offered his support for Wiki Leaks following the release of US diplomatic cables in November 2010 that showed the United States had tried to rally support from regional governments to isolate Venezuela. On the contrary, Australia, France, Iran, Libya, Philippines and the United States criticized Julian Assange. Russian investigative reporter Andrei Soldatov has criticised Wiki Leaks for disclosing documents without checking of the facts, without putting them in context, and without analyzing them. Australia condemns Wiki Leaks actions. France views Wiki Leaks as violation of diplomatic relations. Iran also criticised Wiki Leaks following the release of United States diplomatic cables. Ahmadinejad claimed that the release of cables purporting to show concern with Iran by Arab states was a planned leak by the United States to harm his government.

Come out to reject Burnaby School Board Policy #5.45 By: Daud Ismail, Burnaby It’s a shame that Burnaby School Board Trustees passed Policy 5.45 in spite of opposition and request for consultation from the “Parents’ Voice”. from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, whose precincts ‘WE’ did bless, in order that WE might show him some of ‘Our Signs’: for HE is the One Who hearth and seeth all things”. The month of Rajab is one of the 4 Sacred Months in which the Wars, and fighting are prohibited. Rajab is also the month of ‘Miraj’ (ascension) the miraculous mystic vision of the Ascension of the Prophet Muhammad (SAS). The special month of Rajab is celebrated by Prayers, fasting, and charity, just as indicated by the Prophet (SAS). The first steps in such growth must be through moral conduct: the reciprocal rights of parents and children, a sense of personal responsibility to humanity, kindness to fellow men, courage and firmness in the hour of danger and difficulty, keeping patience, kindness, awareness of the Creation, and most of all a sense of Presence of CreatorGod; Whose Presence can only be proven by HIS worship only and by obedient to HIS commandments.. The phenomena of Al Isra al Miraj, the prophet’s miraculous journey to the 7th Heaven from the Sacred mosque-Masjid ul Haram, the location of Kaba in Mecca, to the farthest Mosque in Jerusalem known as Masjid-ul-Aqsa, which is attached to the Dome of the Rock-Qubat-Al-Sakhrah the 3rd. Libyan leader, Muammar al-Gaddafi said, "Do not be fooled by Wiki Leaks because that publishes information written by “lying ambassadors” in order to create chaos. Hillary Clinton denounced the group saying, "this disclosure is not just an attack on America's foreign policy interests, it is an attack on the international community." Seventy percent of Americans think the leaks are doing more harm than good by allowing enemies of the United States government to see confidential and secret information about U.S. foreign policy. A majority of Germans disapprove of Wiki Leaks. A poll by CNN revealed that more British people agree than disagree that Wiki Leaks was right to release the cables, Australian UMR research poll shows that the majority of Australians are against the official government position on Wiki Leaks. The poll also looked at issues in relation to Julian Assange, with the results showing a positive opinion on him. A December 2010 Gallup poll in Pakistan found that 52% of Pakistanis believe "America itself has published the documents on purpose to create unrest," while 24% believe that this is not the case. Regarding the recent high profile hacking such as Sony Play station, Lockheed Martin, Google Gmail etc., the hackers are getting smarter while staying ahead of security experts. liant idea to turn around a struggling brand. The servers of Sony, the entertainment giant, were subjected to two successive hacking within days. Surprisingly, the accounts of millions were hacked into and the servers of Nintendo suffered the same disaster as well. The shameful ‘hack activity’ and the publication by the Wiki leaks have done a huge damage to national and international interests beyond repair. A recent “data theft” from International Monetary Fund computers by hackers is thought to be linked to a foreign government. The computer worms were downloaded into the IMF’s networks through so-called spear phishing, which involves sending e-mails that appear to come from colleagues or other officials. Ongoing hacker attacks undermine the confidentiality of the stored data which eventually ends up in the hands of publishers such as wiki Leaks. Since the crime of hacking poses a great threat to individuals, corporations, banks, companies and the governments around the world, internet security apparatus has to be evolved before it gets out of hand. At the end of the day, transparency remains the best medicine for socio-economic and political healing through providing the “humankind” with truth alone.

Finally he was carried to the top of the Lote-Tree of Heaven flowering at the right of GOD’s invisible Throne and shading myriads of angelic spirits. Al-Isra al Miraj is the time when the Prophet received the commands from GOD for 50 prayers a day, but upon coming down from Heaven Prophet Muhammad (SAS) met . Prophet Moses (AS) who spoke on this subject of 50 prayers and advised his brother Prophet Muhammad (SAS) to return to the Lord and ask for reduction in the prayers as he knew from his experience that nobody will pray 50 times a day.Consequently, the prayers were reduced to 5 times a day with the grace of the Lord the Creator-Al-Kaliq-Allah. Apparently, the significance of 5 times prayers (fasting etc) is so unique that the Soul is cleansed and Purified as it gets in touch with the Higher Power Al-Khaliq-Creator-GOD and gives much needed physical and spiritual help required by mankind, who is in need of help from the Supreme-Being, but HE doesn’t need our help, HE is the giver and not the taker. Let us pray for all the creatures who are in need, and those in dispute to reconcile and end the violation of all kinds, the friends families, forget and forgive that is the true religion given by HIM.

Hate speech against Ahmadis: An Appeal to Everyone Sent by: Taiq Ghuman, Surrey By Meera Ghani I would like to bring everyone’s attention to a recent event that has gotten little or no coverage in Pakistan and the international media so far. A group called All-Pakistan Students Khatm-e-Nubuwat Federation is handing out vile, hate fuelled pamphlets calling for outright murder of the already persecuted Ahmadiya community in the city of Faisalabad. The pamphlet lists Ahmadi industrialists, doctors and prominent businesses calling “to shoot such people is an act of jihad and to kill such people is an act of sawab (blessing).” This is an obvious attempt to incite violence against a minority and cannot be ignored under the guise of freedom of speech. It targets individuals and should be seen as liable in the eyes of the law. Sadly, the Ahmadiya community was declared nonmuslim in Pakistan’s 1973 constitution and it provides many of these zealous organizations the legitimacy they need to spread their hate Here’s the link to the actual pamphlet: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=115 954538491814&view=wall&notif_t=event_wa ll#!/photo.php?fbid=10150277352987214&set =o.155235684537684&type=1&theater

The Caliphs Gave News Service and Postal System to the World By: Mohammad Yacoob The book, "The Timeline of History", published during the fourth quarter of the 20th century, documents historical facts by establishing a linkage between people and events, and records introduction of the first organized news service in the Muslim world by the Caliph in 650 C.E. It also mentions the availability, in 942 C.E., of approximately 1000 stations of postal and news services to the public in the Caliph's Empire. This timeline does not provide any details. These milestones provided advanced communication between the various strata of the Muslim society in the Muslim world. The Divine message of 'Read' and spread the word of Allah, was taken to heart by the Muslim Ummah during the life of Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless and greet him, whose instructions and guidance brought a change in the lives of tribal and ethnic groups. A cursory look at the golden age of Islam reveals that the scientific achievements made by Muslims were continuous during that era. The decline of the Muslim political power saw total absence of scientific achievements. Yet, the Muslim contributions to the human civilization are enormous and include astronomy, mathematics, physics, chemistry, natural sciences, medicine, music, philosophy, literature, history, geography, political sciences, sociology, architecture and arts. These are some of the representative achievements of some and not all of the scientists, inventors, philosophers and thinkers in the Muslim world. Astronomy: The Caliphs, Sultans and Khans in the various regions of the Muslim world and during various times were very much interested in astronomy. This gave rise to the development and establishments of observatories throughout the Islamic world in cities of Baghdad, Cairo, Cordova, Toledo and Samarkand. The most famous Baghdad School of Astronomy was established by Caliph Mansur, whose reign lasted from 754 to 775 C.E. This school is credited for discovery of the movement of the sun's apogee. It was also involved in evaluation of the obliquity of the elliptical diminution, which means the determination of the inclination of the earth towards the plane of orbit around the sun and the orbital path. The scientists at the Baghdad astronomy school also made detailed study of exact duration of the year, forecasted sunspots, studied eclipses and appearances of comets. These findings and other information data were recorded and compiled in the "verified Tables" prepared by Yahya Ben Abu Mansur. The great astronomers were Al Batani, Abul Wefa, Maslamah Al Maherbi, Omar Ibn Khaldoun, Averroes, Ali Ibn Younis, who invented pendulum and edited Hakemite Tables; Hasan Ibn Al Haitan wrote treatise on optics; Al Biruni published a list of towns and their latitudes and longitude; Nasr Ed Dine authored Ilkanian Tables of astronomy; and Ulug Beg's work on astronomy was published in France in 1437. Mathematics: Basic principles of arithmetic, geometry and algebra were developed by the Arab mathematicians. Al Khawarizmi wrote the algebra treatise entitled Hisab Al-Jabr Wal Muqabalah, Thabit Ben Garrah translated Ptolemy's Almagest, Al Batani developed trigonometry and Mohammed Ben Ahmed is credited with the invention of zero. Physics: Hassan Ali Haitan (Alhasan) conducted research into magnifying lenses and gave an exact description of eye, lenses and binocular vision. He finally completed a lengthy treatise on optics. Documented proof mentions that Muslim scientists were involved in perfecting the compass. Arab discovered use of pendulum for clocks. Ben Hamin of Toledo, Spain, gave description of the famous clock in the Mosque of Damascus. Muslim scientists developed navigational system and put compass to practical use by applying the magnetic needle. Chemistry: The science of Kimiah was cultivated and

He also presented current strengths of students in each category and read the finical report and requirements of this academy. Qari Tayyab Qasmi was also asked to raise the fund for the academy. Qari Qasmi requested the parents to send theirs children in Islamic Madrasas or centers as well as their other general educational institutions. Here they learn Nazara Quran and memorize the Quraan. In BC, we already have shortage of Huffaz and we are focusing scholars on our youth so they can be better Muslim of our society by having knowledge of both Deen (religion) and Duniya (world). They also reminded the audience that memorizing the holy Quran is a great achievement. However, the most important
thing is that the person follows the Quran and Sunnah throughout his life for which he receives great rewards from Allah (SWT) in Aakhira. Qari Sahib helped collecting some amounts to pay monthly expenses of this Madrasa. More than $5,600 was raised for the academy that night. After Maghrib prayer, all Muslim Scholars and Imams from different Mosques took part in Dastaar Bandi. When Amin Karroum finished the reciting of last verses and first verses from the Holy Quran under his teacher supervision the ceremony of Dastar Bandi took place and Academy resounded with Takbeer. Alhaaj Youssef Karroum, father of Amin Karroum, was very happy at this moment when his son became a Hafiz ul Quran. He thanked all the participants and teachers. Mufti Shujaat Ali Nadwi was also attended these spiritual moments. At the end Maulana Ghulam Baji made Duaa for him and for all Muslim Ummah. Many Islamic Centres / Madrasas in local Muslim communities are offering services to educate youth about being a peaceful Muslim and give them knowledge of Islam in light of teachings of Quaran and Holly Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) Sunnah.

Wills, Powers of Attorney and Representation Agreements: An Introduction By: Raziya Sattar (Lawyer) WILL In British Columbia, if you die without a Will, your estate gets divided according to a set formula established by the government. Your family will inherit from you but not in the shares that you might have wanted. Also, if you leave any children under 19, their share will be managed by the Public Guardian and Trustee and your spouse and kids may not easily get the money they need. Fees are also charged by the agency for managing the money. If minor children are left with no parents, their fate is left up to government officials and the court system. You also miss the chance to take advantage of tax savings if you do not have a properly set up will. If you make your will, you have the opportunity to decide: • Who takes care of your affairs upon your death (executor?) • Who manages your estate long term (trustee?) • Who inherits (beneficiary) and when (at
what age) • What powers your trustee will have? • If your executor/trustee gets paid • Who raises your kids if both parents die? A properly drafted will require thought, planning and legal expertise. There is really no such thing as a simple will as everybody’s asset and family situation is unique. POWER OF ATTTORNEY Another very important planning document is a Power of Attorney. In this document, you appoint the person(s) you want to handle your legal and financial matters while you are still alive. Because a power of attorney can be abused, you might wish to take the following steps to minimize that risk: Appoint more than one person, and state they always have to act together Place restrictions on what the attorney can do Have the power of attorney valid only on certain conditions (for example, only when you are totally unable to act for yourself) The more restrictions you have, however, the more complicated it becomes for the attorney to do what might be necessary. You need to balance convenience versus security. Only choose someone that you completely trust as your attorney. REPRESENTATION AGREEMENT
Because a power of attorney is limited to legal/ financial matters, you should also name the people you want to take care of your medical and personal care matters. You do this in a Representation Agreement and this document is very important if you are particular about who gets to make decisions for you when you can’t and what decisions they can make (such as life sup-
port, certain medical procedures, etc). If you don’t make this document, someone that you did not want could end up deciding very important life and death questions for you. Candle Light Vigil in the memory of slain journalist Saleem Shahzad
On June 12, The Committee of Progressive Pakistani Canadians (CPPC) organized a Candle Light Vigil in the memory of slain journalist Saleem Shahzad in Holland Park, Surrey. About seventy people were present, most of the South Asian communities members. This event was endorsed by FVPC (Fraser Valley Peace Council) and SANSAD (South Asian Network for Secularism & Democracy). On behalf of members and executive of CPPC, Vancouver Chapter Mr. Shahzad Nazir Khan conducted this Candle light Vigil. He described the purpose of this gathering about the brutal murder. Saleem Shahzad, a veteran Pakistani journalist and a loud voice of reason was first abducted and than killed by the forces of dark in Pakistan. Shahzad had just turned to 40 and was a true professional investigative journalist. He wrote extensively on issues pertaining to global security, especially on Pakistani military and religious militant movements in the Muslim world. People at Holland Park also carried the placard depicting Prof. Saba Dashtiyary gunned down in Quetta on June 1, 2011. Many community members of Pakistani and Punjabi Community included MLA Sue Hammell and local print and electronic media members condemned these brutal murders of Saleem Shahzahd and Saba Dashtiyary. Most of the speakers criticized Pakistani security forces, and showed expressed their negativity towards ISI of Pakistan and current situation of Pakistan in their speeches and also raised the issue of missing people of Balochistan. Mr. Naseer Pirzada represented Miracle Media at the event, and asked why the vigil was being lit for his fellow media member Mr. Saleem Shahzadh and why we do not light it for over 35 thousand innocent people who have died Pakistan since the beginning of this War on Terror. Also, a journalist was recently killed in India but was the same reaction seen? We have to think that how we end this war on terrorism. In every country many crimes including murders are happening everyday and it is not necessary all criminals and murderers face justice in courts on time. Sensitive news should be shared in a way to avoid spread of fear and panic in public. At the sunset the attendees at Holland Park lit the candles and showed their support to slain Saleem Shahzad's and Saba Dashtiyary families.
Editor Note: Still there is no Pakistani court commission appointed to address this murder and the court will be responsible for making decision on who killed Shahzad. Early Public demonstrations on such issues may create hate among communities and countries. No doubt at this moment the dignity of Pakistan and its people is on stake due to its political leaders and policies of its military dictators but this does not allow people from Pakistan to give chance to others to criticize the nation and its people without complete knowledge of issues and proof. As hard as it may be at times, one should remain positive and love Pakistan.

Understanding the Struggles of Youth and Parents in North America BCMA Richmond branch organized two seminars for Youth and parents at the multipurpose hall in Richmond Mosque. Mr. Azhar Syed coordinated these seminars. In both seminars Dr. Mohammed Sadiq was the speaker. He is a clinical Psychologist in Edmonton who has been practising in North America for the past 35 years. Dr. Sadiq has worked with people of all ages suffering from various emotional, mental, behavioral and family problems. The first seminar was held on June 10 after Asar Prayer and went on till the Isha Prayer. The topic was ‘Growing-up in North America: struggles of our Youth and Parents’. Dr. Sadiq presented a very informative slide show and discussed many topics touching on our daily life problems. The Objectives of the first seminar was to identify and understand the conflicts and struggles of parents and youth who are facing in coping with two cultures and many different sets of values and expectations, to discuss
how parents and youth are coping and dealing with these struggles – what is working and what isn’t and to examine some of the more important issues and come up with some workable solutions. He described the issues facing young Muslim such as not praying Salah on time because of their study and to get good grades. Young Muslim males in particular face issues such as peer pressure, bullies in school, sibling rivalries, discrimination, fights in school. It is difficult for youth to make decision, to find good friends, dealing with drug issue in dealing with girls and Internet issue. They have to face the issues like Shisha – Smoking, TV, movies, video games, Jealousy of friends, anger management and dealing with non-Muslim. Similarly Muslim –Females have to face issues like hijab, keeping Muslim identity, marriage –own choices vs. parents, feeling like not having fun as non-Muslims are having, religious discrimination, influence of media, dawah to others, can’t play sports, pressure to wear jilbab wherever they go, culture vs. Islam, food in restaurants, halal and haram friendship with boys, fitting-in in school, parents issues e.g. generation gap – parents wanting to raise kids as they were raised hesitant about girls wearing hijab, inequalities between boys and girls, one non-Muslim parent struggles of youth. There are problems like parents fighting and
breaking up, generation gap, arguments with parents and dealing with choices of parents. Dr. Sadiq mentioned some interesting issues facing every youth like how to benefit from all the opportunities in this society? How to justify and survive the contradictions in the cultural, religious and local values? How to deal with peer-pressures and prejudices in school and work place? how to deal with parents who don’t seem to understand what youth are going through? How to find a spouse? How to make ends meet financially? How to deal with our anger, disappointments, and depression? Parents have financial issues like fitness in society, to preserve their own values and faith at the sometime, to protect themselves from the negative values and influences of this culture, to protect children’s Deen and Iman to protect their safety and security from the prejudices and backlashes on Muslims, deal with their ‘rebelling’ spouses and children, and to deal with our anger, disappointments and depression? Dr. Sadiq added, “we all know the opportunities like individual rights and freedoms, higher worldly education good justice system, safety and security, entertainment and fair contribution to the society are available in North America, but these opportunities could lead to over indulgence in– materialism, fun and entertainment resulting in a loss of true purpose of life, pressures to assimilate leading to– severe value conflicts– adoption of forbidden practices and bad habits, moral decay– family and marital, latent prejudices– fear of safety and security– feelings of helplessness, feelings of anger, revenge and paranoia– measures for self protection– lack of trust in local systems, seclusion and ghettoes. The consequences of this is family and marital problems, problems
with children, problems at work and school aggression, depression, poor Self Image, lack of self confidence, lack of trust and suspicions, drugs and Gangs.” The way the youth are dealing this pressure is staying away/running away from home, finding acceptance outside of home, rejecting all parental values, getting back, joining gangs, drugs/alcohol, pretence (dual personalities), giving in (ok whatever), and becoming mentally/physically ill. The parents are dealing with these pressures by over controlling, arguments and fights at home, violence, severe anxiety and panic, depression and worries, alcohol, staying away from home, giving in. Dr. Sadiq proposed that the solution is in learning to adapt in the new culture. For principles of adaptation we should learn our beliefs, requirements of sharia, and values well. Practice them – become a living example. Live a balanced life, keep the right company, learn proper rules of engagement with people of other faiths and understand and make the best of the environment we live in. “We need to make an effort to overcome our shortcomings and improve upon our weaknesses. Some powerful things in bringing personal change are personal responsibility – a sense of accountability, hard work, consistency and patience, prayers and hope, choosing the right company living a balanced life.”
Learning the art of Living A Balanced Life (2nd Season) Following a session on struggles on youth, Dr. Mohammed Sadiq presented a three hours session on June 11th in Richmond Multipurpose hall. He presented on another sensitive subject of our life in his presentation, leading a balanced life. He pointed out the problems and gave their solutions in details. The objectives of the seminar were to identify some of the pressures and demands in our daily life and to discuss how people are handling them and to learn how to best handle them and achieve a balance in our life. A group discussion was held to identify struggles and pressures in everyone’s daily life and their effect. Dr. Sadiq mentioned, “There are rights and responsibilities for parents, spouses, children, near and distant, relatives, friends, neighbors, our own nafs we have responsibilities for community at large, country and government, land we live on. There is a pressure on the families e.g. rapid changes in norms, values and lifestyle and the ever increasing value conflicts, stresses of being a minority community, poverty or financial problems, declining morality, appropriate upbringing of children, finding appropriate spouses for children, maintaining our Islamic lifestyle.” He highlighted the consequences of this pressure which includes emotional problems, family breakdowns, increased incidence of domestic violence, and eventually community breakdown. He said that we suffer from these stresses more than other communities because there is a lack of a clear frame of reference, lack of the correct knowledge of deen, severe value conflicts in our families and communities, discrepancy between what we say and what
we do ambivalence about lifestyle choices, fear of losing the material gains of this dunya, mixed messages from our leaders and scholars and lack of support for families in our communities. Dr. Sadiq then gave some tips about finding the balance in life. He spoke of correctly prioritizing for the life here as well as the life hereafter. He provided some examples of a balanced lifestyle: • Going to school or to work and praying five times a day on time • Earning lots of money, but only through Halal means, using it to meet your needs as well as the needs of others • Studying modern subjects as well as the teachings of our Deen • Dressing modestly that meets the requirements of Shari’ah. • Husbands looking after the family’s financial needs while wives taking charge of the households needs. • Husbands and wives helping each other with their responsibilities as needed. • Parents educating their children both in the modern education as well as Islamic education. • Parents providing Tarbiyah to the children, and children dealing with their elders with respect. • Mothers loving their children, but not destroying them with love. • Teaching children to love others and love Allah (swt). • Preparing children for a successful life here and in the hereafter. • Spending money wisely without being extravagant. • Making the best use of all material things within the bounds of Shari’ah.
• It becomes easy to strive for and happily live a Balanced Life when we understand • What are we living for? What is the ultimate purpose of life? • What responsibilities and accountabilities Allah has placed on us? • What are the priorities of our life in this world, which may end any time? • What needs to be done should be done first. • What’s only for entertainment should come next • What helps us achieve our goals for our life here and also in the hereafter must take precedence. • What only brings us temporary fun and enjoyment in this life should come after. • Not Wasting Time. • Taking care of yourself and everyone
around you simply because they are all Allah's creatures and deserve our mercy, love and kindness. • Being grateful for what we have been blessed with and not complaining about what we don't have. • Making the best of our abilities and not expecting success all the time because it is not possible to succeed all the time. • Understanding that Efforts are what matters, results are in the hands of Allah. • Making sure that Allah is pleased with us. During both of his informative sessions, Dr. Sadiq fielded many questions from the audience. His expertise knowledge impressed many in attendance and provided everyone some handy advice to take home.

World health officials scramble to stem deadly E. coli outbreak aInfectious disease detectives worldwide rushed Thursday to find the cause of an outbreak of a rare strain of E. coli that has spread to 10 countries and is blamed for at least 16 deaths and hundreds of illnesses. Nine patients in Germany had died of a form of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome, or HUS, according to the World Health Organization, which cited Tuesday figures as its most recent. Six had died of enterohemorrhagic E. coli, EHEC, a strain of E. coli that causes hemorrhaging in the intestines and can result in abdominal cramps and bloody diarrhea. One person in Sweden has also died. Across Europe, 499 cases of HUS and 1,115 cases of EHEC have been reported, WHO said on its website. In addition to Germany and Sweden, cases have been identified in Austria, Denmark, France, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. All but two of the cases occurred in people who had recently visited northern Germany or, in one case, had contact with a visitor from northern Germany, the organization said. Scientists at the Beijing Genomic Institute said the outbreak of infection in Germany is caused by a new "super-toxic" E. coli strain, though the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the strain has been seen before. "We have very little experience with this particular strain, but it has been seen before," said Robert Tauxe, deputy director of the CDC's division of foodborne diseases. The CDC said the strain is very rare and added that, while it is not aware of any cases ever having been reported in the United States, it is aware of a few previous reports of the strain in other countries. Britain's Health
Protection Agency has said that the strain suspected in the outbreak is "rare" and "seldom seen in the UK." Though WHO said it does not recommend any trade restrictions related to the outbreak, Russia announced a ban Thursday on fresh vegetable imports from the European Union. Russia imposed the vegetable ban because "no one wants to get sick. It is a natural protective measure taken in response to events that are happening in Europe today," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said Thursday. Gennady Onishchenko, head of the Russian Federal Agency for Health and Consumer Rights, issued a statement saying the ban will remain in effect "until we become convinced that this situation is resolved." Customs officials have been instructed to prevent the produce from entering the country, according to Onishchenko, while supermarkets and food chains in Russia were told to withdraw European vegetables from their produce bins. Frederic Vincent, the European Commission's health spokesman, called the move "disproportionate." "The commission will be writing today to the Russian authorities, and we will be liaising and working with them in the coming days to try to find a solution," Vincent said. The commission is the EU's executive body. Yelena Skrynnik, Russia's agriculture minister, issued a statement assuring Russians that, despite the ban, "the volume of home-grown vegetable production combined with exports (from other countries) is sufficient to fully meet Russia's domestic demand." In 2010, the imports of tomatoes and cucumbers from the EU amounted to, respectively, 11% and 5% of all imports of those vegetables into Russia, the Russian Agriculture
Ministry said. The ban could potentially affect some larger cities in the European part of the country, where about 90% of vegetables are imported, said Sergey Shugayev, chairman of the Rural Russia Association. China and Turkey are the two largest exporters of fresh vegetables into Russia, according to the Russian Greenhouses Association. The European Food Safety Alert Network initially said EHEC was found in organic cucumbers originating from Spain, packaged in Germany and distributed to countries including Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg and Spain. But authorities said Thursday the source had not been pinpointed. Spain's Ministry of Health, Social Politics and Equality said Thursday that all samples of Spanish produce that it analyzed had proved negative. Spain's ambassador to Britain, Carles Casajuana i Palet, told CNN that Spanish produce had been "completely cleared" and are "safe for all consumers." But, he added, the matter had damaged the country's growers "and we are sure there will have to be
compensations" through the European Union. Britain's Health Protection Agency on Thursday confirmed that there were four new cases in England suspected to be related to the outbreak, bringing the total number of cases in the country to seven. The agency said that it was "reminding people traveling to Germany to follow the advice of the authorities and avoid eating raw tomatoes, cucumbers and leafy salad including lettuce, especially in the north of the country, until further notice. In addition, anyone returning from Germany with illness including bloody diarrhea should seek urgent medical attention and make sure they mention their recent travel history." The ban on fresh vegetables from the European Union comes three days after Russia blocked the import of fresh tomatoes, cucumbers and salad greens from Germany and Spain. On Wednesday, the United Arab Emirates imposed a temporary ban on cucumbers from Spain, Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands. CNN's Maxim Tkachenko contributed to this report.

When The Good You Do Doesn’t Do You Any Good Shabnam Khan - Family Counsellor Women are traditionally trained to place other’s needs first...... What could possibly be wrong with doing good? We want to please others, and we please ourselves when we feel to do so, that’s maybe! When we do both the same time, there’s twice the bonus. We’ve done it for as long as we can remember. The concept is based on the following logic: If I can make other people happy, then they will like me. If they like me, I must be good enough. If I’m good enough, they’ll keep me around, I’ll be safe and secure, and that’s all I need to be happy. The happier I can make others, the happier and therefore the safer I will be. The only problem is, it doesn’t work that way. Till which extend are you prepared to please everyone? Make no mistake. There’s nothing wrong with pleasing others - unless, of course, it becomes all-encompassing. True giving is a part of making any relationship work, but it’s not the
only part - particularly if you’re doing all the giving and they’re doing all the taking. That is not a balanced relationship! This malady starts with an ernest attempt to make someone else happy, but it can quickly become a pattern of behavior with a far-reaching consequences. You may not like the end result later on and that might be too late. Now the truth is, this mostly affects women! Women have evolved to be relationship driven, and they seek out social situations as opportunities to relate to others. In ancient days, almost every task required communication, coordination and cooperation. In other words, a network of relationships supported every task. Evolution has virtually assured that women on the other will be caregivers. The better women were at these skills, the more value and status they realized within their families and their social circle. Nowadays women are playing various roles in the Society and instead of playing a Pleaser Role, do something even small that you are confident and proud of! Happy Women Know That If You Want To Take Care Of Others, You Must First- Or Simultaneously- Take Care Of Yourself.........
although SkyTrain and SeaBus were still running to take people out of the riot area. Smoke from burning dumpsters and cars choked the city skies and rioters smashed windows at the Bay on Granville Street and at the Bank of Montreal branch at the intersection of Georgia and Homer streets. As soon as the final whistle blew in the game, young men in the Georgia Street fan zone began setting off firecrackers, shouting anti-Boston slogans and setting Bruins gear on fire. Others could be seen throwing bottles at the massive TV screens in the Georgia Street fan zone.Fans flipped a car out front of the post office on Georgia Street and turned over another truck nearby after the Canucks were trounced 4-0 in the final game. Another car was set on fire. Other angry fans held signs reading "Riot 2011" and burned homemade Stanley Cups as the pandemonium spread through the downtown core. Some rioters flipped portable toilets, and there were early reports of head injuries as fist fights broke out throughout the downtown area. Source:CTV
Vancouver : Continued from pg 1 CTV News that she was shocked by the damage throughout the city."I cannot begin to tell you have utterly disappointed I am," she said."It is shocking. It is disappointing." Vancouver Police Const. Lindsey Houghton told CTV News that the crowd downtown Wednesday likely exceeded 100,000, but he said that only a small minority were responsible for the widespread damage."The majority of people are still in good spirits," he said."It's unfortunate that we've seen that group of people in downtown Vancouver trying to cause trouble."The VPD's Const. Jana McGuinness denied that the situation was out of hand. "People have gone to great lengths to damage our fine city," she told CTV News. "We didn't invite 100,000 people downtown without a plan." The Vancouver Police Department called in backup from nearby RCMP detachments to help control the riots, and the Cambie Street Bridge was shut down to keep people out of the downtown area. TransLink announced shortly after 9:30 p.m. that it was shutting down all bus service in downtown Vancouver,

Afridi's NOC could be cleared
A compromise between the PCB and former captain Shahid Afridi is likely following a meeting between the board chairman Ijaz Butt and Afridi in Islamabad, bringing to an end one of the biggest player-board disputes in recent memory in Pakistan. "I did meet Afridi in Islamabad but I cannot say any more than that at the moment," Butt told ESPNcricinfo. He refused to indicate if the meeting had an outcome or whether there was an announcement to be expected. A statement from the board later said no further announcements will be made. Speculation indicated that through this agreement, Afridi will be given the No Objection Certificates he needs to play for Hampshire and later in the Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL). In return, he will withdraw the petition he filed in the Sindh
High Court against the board's decision to form a disciplinary committee, cancel his central contract and revoke his NOC and will face any punishment the committee hands out. In effect, the situation appears to have returned to when Afridi first replied <http://www.espncricinfo.com/pakistan/co ntent/story/517485.html> to the board's showcause notice, in which he accepted violating the code of conduct and expressed a willingness to face a hearing if his NOC was reinstated. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for June 16 at the Sindh High Court and Afridi could withdraw his petition then. The meeting is believed to have been the result of intervention of senior political figures; from the start the dispute took on a political character. Afridi had appealed directly to Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari, who is the chief patron of the board, to resolve the situation. He had met Zardari's son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in London and had spoken to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif as well on the matter. Rehman Malik, the interior minister and mediator in past disputes, also got involved, promising on Twitter to find a solution. The flurry of activity prompted the PCB to issue a rare statement expressing displeasure at the political interference, compelling Butt to tell a local newspaper of his exasperation at the number of phone calls he had received
Player Profile: Wasim Akram
A dream cricketer. At his best Wasim Akram plays like most of us would wish to. He has complete mastery over swing and seam, and sometimes moves the ball both ways in one delivery. All this comes at high speed from a quick, ball-concealing action, and is backed up by the threat of a dangerous bouncer or deceptive slower
delivery. Akram is rated by many as the best left-arm fast bowler of all time, and his career record certainly bears that out along with the high regard of his contemporaries. He hit like a kicking horse, but batsmanship was one skill in which Akram underachieved, despite a monumental 257 against Zimbabwe in Sheikhupura in 1996-97. He was the natural successor to Imran Khan as Pakistan's leader and captain, but the match-fixing controversies of the 1990s harmed him, blunting his edge and dimming his lustre. Though he reached the 500-wicket landmark in ODIs in the 2003 World Cup, he was among the eight players dumped after Pakistan's miserable performance. He retired shortly after, following a brief spell with Hampshire. Source: Cricinfo

on the matter. Advisors close to Afridi are also believed to have tried convincing him to reach a compromise with an administration under whom he has publicly said he will not play again, after having been removed as ODI captain in May. Though Afridi was unconvinced at first, the possibility of losing out on the Twenty20 stint with Hampshire - who were looking at Chris Gayle as a replacement option - forced his hand. "We've remained hopeful all along,

and we are very hopeful that an announcement can be made soon," Rod Bransgrove, Hampshire's chairman, told ESPNcricinfo. "But we cannot say anything more definitive beyond that at this stage. "We had to look at all contingency options, and Chris Gayle's name was one of those names that came into the frame," Bransgrove said. "But we have remained hopeful all along that Afridi would receive clearance to join us for the remainder of the Twenty20 campaign." Source: Cricinfo
