Putin: Escalating conflict puts Ukraine on ‘brink of civil war’ The escalating conflict in Ukraine “essentially puts the nation on the brink of civil war,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday. His assessment came during a telephone conversation with his German counterpart, according to the Kremlin, the same day Ukraine’s military launched its first, formal military action against pro-Russian militants with troops retaking an airport in the eastern Donetsk region after a reported clash with gunmen. The military action came a day after a Ukrainian ultimatum expired for protesters to lay down their arms, a move that appeared to signal an escalation in the crisis that has sparked a diplomatic row between Ukraine, its Western allies and Russia. With pro-Russian militants seizing government and police buildings in as many as 10 towns and cities in eastern Ukraine, acting President Oleksandr Turchynov told

Parliament “an anti-terrorist operation” was under way in the region. The aim of the military operation is to “stop attempts to tear Ukraine to pieces,” he told lawmakers. Witnesses reported hearing gunfire and aircraft that appeared to be coming from the airfield in Kramatorsk, which Turchynov’s office said was under the control of Ukrainain special forces late Tuesday. There were conflicting reports about casualties, with Russian staterun media citing varying casualty claims supplied by militants. According to the reports, there were either two injured or four killed, claims that CNN cannot independently verify. Putin’s comments followed similar ones hours earlier from Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev warned Ukraine was on a violent path. “Ukraine Continued on pg 4 is on the brink of civil

Elections committee has received nearly 1,900 complaints of fraud since the April 5 election Two clear front-runners emerged in Afghanistan’s presidential election Sunday as partial results showed a tight race between President Hamid Karzai’s closest rival in the last vote and a former World Bank official. With 10 per cent of the ballots counted, Abdullah Abdullah, who came in second in the disputed 2009 election, had 41.9 per cent, followed by Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai with 37.6 per cent. In third place with 9.8 per cent of the vote was Zalmai Rassoul, another former foreign minister who was considered a favourite of Karzai.<

Pakistani Taliban Declares End to Ceasefire

The Pakistani Taliban has formally ended a 40-day ceasefire but is still open to talks with the government, according to a spokesman for the group. Shahidullah Shahid said on Wednesday the Pakistani Taliban was not extending the ceasefire, which began on March 1, because the government had continued to arrest people and killed more than 50 people associated with the group.”However, the talks will continue with sincerity and seriousness and in case there is clear progress from the government side, [the Taliban] will not hesitate to take a serious step,” he said in a statement. The announcement comes three days after Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Pakistan’s interior minister, said the process was about to enter a “comprehensive” phase. Peace talks between the Taliban and the government of

Nawaz Sharif began in February but the first round ended in violence. The Pakistani government has released a few low-level non-combatant prisoners, but the Taliban want hundreds of men released and the army to pull back from tribal areas bordering Afghanistan. South Waziristan is one of seven semi-autonomous areas along the Afghan border that are havens for the fighters. Talks were a key campaign pledge for Sharif before he was elected to the prime minister’s office for a third time last year. But some analysts have voiced scepticism about their chances for success, given the Pakistani Taliban’s demands for nationwide Islamic law and a withdrawal of troops from the lawless tribal zones. PM Calls Urgent Meeting on National Security

1104-7360 137 Street Surrey Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has called an urgent meeting of the cabinet committee on national security on Thursday at PM House, official sources told Dawn.com on Wednesday. Federal ministers for defence, interior, information and adviser on national security have been invited to attend the meeting. Chairman joint chiefs of staff committee, three services chiefs, DG IB, DG ISI are also expected to attend the meeting. “Latest developments with regard to government, Taliban peace talks would come under consideration,” said a cabi-

net source. Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan would brief the participants about the latest situation of the dialogue process between government and the Tehreek-i-Taliban including demands of the umbrella militant group. The cabinet source said that recent Afghan elections and the impact of its result would also come under consideration. This is the first time in last one month that civil and military leadership would face each other after tension rose between them due to statements of few cabinet members against the military establishment. Musharraf Asks Court to also try his Associates

Former military dictator Pervez Musharraf’s counsel Barrister Farogh Naseem on Tuesday requested the Special Court to also try the associates of his client for assisting him in declaring the state of emergency on November 3, 2007. The three-member Special Court, headed by Justice Faisal Arab and comprising Justice Tahira Safdar and Justice Yawar, resumed hearing into the Federation’s complaint for initiating the treason case against Musharraf for abrogating the Constitution and declaring the state of emergency in the country on Nov 3, 2007. Justice Faisal Arab told the defence counsel that the court could not open all the cases of abrogation of the Constitution since 1956, as its mandate was limited to hearing the instant case. The remarks came when Musharraf’s defence counsel Dr. Farogh Naseem argued that in terms of international jurisprudence, there could be no selective prosecution of Musharraf and quoted Article 12(2) of the Constitution requiring a trial under Article 6 with effect from 23.3.1956. Dr Naseem said the reference had been made

in passing for the purposes of the main case and for the time being for the purpose of arguments on the application seeking the disclosure of FIA report Article 12(2) was not relevant and therefore this question should be kept open. He also requested the courtto take up application (No. 12 of 2014) in which a request had been made for the disclosure and supply of copies of inquiries/investigation report of the FIA, which was the foundational basis of the complaint itself. He said vide order dated March 7. 2014 the court had clearly held that as and when evidence on material was brought on record that the accused was aided, abetted and collaborated by others, it would decide the issue in that regard. He said in order to bring such evidence on record, the first step was to require the prosecution to file the FIA report, which clearly contained a dissenting note by one Hussain Asghar that Musharraf alone should not be tried and that his aides and abettors should also be made co-accused. Era of $599,000 homes over in Vancouver, real-estate experts say

Real-estate sales are up, housing starts are up, and experts believe the era of $599,000 homes in Vancouver is probably over. A flurry of publicity arose when a 1,950-square-foot renovated home at 2622 Clark Dr. was recently listed for $599,000. That house — Vancouver’s cheapest detached home — sold Thursday for $643,000. Next in line in the affordability sweepstakes was a $628,000 listing at 3447 William St. But you’re also too late for that 700-sq.-ft., two-bedroom, one-bathroom home on a 33-foot lot just off the TransCanada Highway — it sold for $609,000. “I got a lot of calls on it,” saidRe/Max Select realtor Ron Basra. “A builder bought it. It’s a teardown. “He’s going to build a house with a legal suite, and a coach house. He can live there, and get income from renting the suite and the coach house.” Basra said low carrying costs are attracting buyers at the lower end of Vancouver’s real-estate market. “Interest rates are low, and no one knows how

long that will last,” said Basra, a realtor for 17 years. “Anything under $1 million is selling right now.” From those two properties there’s a significant jump to 823 McLean Dr., where a sizable 1,750-sq.-ft. home with two suites is listed at $668,000. It’s not for everyone — just off busy Venables Street on an alley connecting nearby businesses — but it has easy access to downtown Vancouver. “Right now it’s a healthy market,” said Sumal Inde, vice-president of residential mortgages with RBC. “More houses have been sold this year, housings starts are up.” Inde said the era of so-called ‘affordable’ Vancouver homes — if you think of $600,000 as affordable — is coming to a close. “These values are up year after year,” said Inde. “Builders look at these properties as lot value. Most of these properties have gone up $100,000 in the past few years.” Tsur Somerville, who teaches real estate at the University of B.C.’s Sauder School of Business, said the low supply of detached

New York’s police department has disbanded an undercover spying operation against Muslims which rights groups said was baseless and unfairly targeted people solely because of their religion. Members of the unit have been reassigned, a report in the New York Times newspaper on Tuesday said. The surveillance programme sent detectives into Muslim neighbourhoods to eavesdrop on conversations and watch day-to-day activities. Police also infiltrated mosques and student groups. The programme was revealed in a series of articles by the Associated Press news agency, which reported that officers had infiltrated Muslim organisations following the attacks of September 11, 2001. The disbandment comes after a federal judge, sitting in New Jersey, threw out a lawsuit last month brought by several New Jersey Muslims who claimed police illegally targeted them solely because of their

religion. The judge said the city persuasively argued that its surveillance was intended as an antiterrorism, not an anti-Muslim, measure. However, the Times report quoted Stephen Davis, the department’s chief spokesman, as saying that the police department was changing its tactics. “Understanding certain local demographics can be a useful factor when assessing the threat information that comes into New York City virtually on a daily basis,” he said. “In the future, we will gather that information, if necessary, through direct contact between the police precincts and the representatives of the communities they serve,” he said. Police officials and the former New York mayor, Michael Bloomberg, who left office in January, had defended the programme as vital to anti-terrorism efforts. Bill de Blasio, the new mayor, criticised the programme when he was campaigning for office and said surveillance should only be authorised to follow up on specific leads. The programme was criticised by civil liberties advocates. A lawsuit in New York, similar to that brought in New Jersey, is pending. Source: Al-Jazeera

war. It is scary. And I hope that everyone who is responsible for making decisions at the moment -- I mean both, the current Ukrainian authorities, who we can’t consider legitimate, but these are the authorities who came to power as result of a coup -- has brains to avoid driving the country to such shocks,” he said at a news conference Tuesday in Moscow. The pro-Russian uprising follows Russia’s annexation last month of Ukraine’s Crimea region, a move that emboldened other pro-Russian Ukrainians in the country’s east to rise up. Russia has said it reserves the right to intervene to protect the rights of ethnic Russians in eastern Ukraine. During the conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Putin also raised concerns about what he called an “anti-constitutional course” taken by Ukrainian authorities in Kiev to suppress protests. Despite what Merkel’s office described as “different assessments of the events on the ground in Ukraine,” the focus of the conversation was on preparations for a meeting in Geneva among the foreign ministers of Russia, Ukraine, the United States and the European Union to find a way to reduce tensions in the region. In a sign of the divisions roiling the country, YouTube footage posted online appeared to show two openly pro-Russian presidential candidates who have demonstrated support for separatists being antagonized by crowds in separate incidents in Kiev on Monday night. In one video, Mikhail Dobkin, a presidential candidate for the Party of Regions, the party of ousted President Viktor Yanukovych, had flour and green liquid thrown at him as he addressed crowds. Another clip showed Oleg Tsarov, an independent candidate who was expelled from the Party of Regions, speaking to people without a shirt as he apparently sought to show the bruising he’d received from an aggressive crowd. In the third video, Tsarov tries to leave a TV station, where crowds shout “Shame! Shame! Shame!” His supporters and protesters end up in a brief scuffle. CNN has not been able independently to verify the amateur video clips. Source: CNN

homes tends to push prices up. “The fixed supply of single-family homes will only get more expensive,” said Somerville, who was surprised to hear detached homes for sale in Vancouver at that $600,000 price point. Somerville believes three factors have contributed to a slightly more positive real-estate outlook than in 2013. “I think one year ago there was a lot of talk about rising interest rates, and the economic forecast was a lot cloudier,” said Somerville. “This year there’s a lot less concern about interest rates — the latest new is BMO lowering its interest rates — and I think people are a lot more optimistic about the U.S. economy.” As Canada’s largest trading partner, U.S. conditions directly affect Canada’s economy, and for the first time since 2008 most U.S. economic signs are pointing up. “Most homes around Vancouver sell in 45 to 60 days,” said Inde. “Prices are only headed in one direction — north.” An RBC home-ownership poll released Thursday

shows some British Columbians are looking closer at buying at home. The poll showed a jump in interest among potential B.C. buyers aged 25 to 54, part of a national trend as spring house-buying season approaches. Nationwide, those ‘very likely’ or ‘somewhat likely’ to buy in the next two years rose to 22 per cent from 20 per cent — a low point after 2012, when 34 per cent nationwide said they were likely to buy a new home. The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus two per cent, 19 times out of 20. Vancouver is one of the least-affordable cities in North America, with homes routinely selling for over $1 million. PM Harper ready to urge G7 to go tougher on Vladimir Putin

Stephen Harper heads to emergency G7 talks on Monday as the only leader in attendance who’s personally witnessed the turmoil in Ukraine, clearly keen to advocate a tougher stand against Russia amid the biggest European crisis since the Cold War. The prime minister called for a “complete reversal” of Russia’s recent actions in Crimea, including its formal annexation of the strategic Black Sea peninsula, during his six-hour visit to Kyiv on Saturday. He also suggested Russia should be booted out of the G8 and warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin cannot be trusted. Others are sounding similar alarm bells about Putin’s actions -- past, present and future. “This is the most serious risk to European security we have seen so far in the 21st century,” Britain’s foreign minister, William Hague, wrote in an opinion piece for the Daily Telegraph newspaper on Sunday. “Vital principles are at stake, including the territorial integrity of European nations and the right of democratic countries to choose their own future.” In The Hague on Monday, the G7 will hold a summit on the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit, now overshadowed by the ominous events in eastern Europe. The summit will be held at the official residence of the Dutch prime minister under tight security that will likely include blocking the mobile phones of the G7 leaders. Similar action was reportedly taken Friday in Brussels due to concerns about Russian espionage when European leaders met to discuss the crisis. That meeting was tense. British Prime Minister David Cameron reportedly clashed with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, urging her to take aim at the Russian billionaires active in her country. Cameron suggested he may even impose sanctions on Roman Abramovich, the oligarch who owns the famed Chelsea soccer club. At the G7 summit, Harper is expected to warn his colleagues that Putin cannot be trusted to stop at Ukraine and that his actions will spur similar brazen territory grabs if they go unpunished. “President Putin has provided a rationale for those elsewhere, who needed little more than that already furnished by pride or grievance, to arm themselves to the teeth,” he said in Kyiv. The G7 summit is being held as thousands of Russian troops amass on the southeast border of Ukraine while the new Ukrainian lead-

ers continue to plead for military assistance from the West. There are concerns that Russia could use the unrest in the eastern reaches of the country, where there’s a large Russian minority, as a pretext for crossing the border. But an age-old debate between hawks and doves is raging within Western political and diplomatic circles over what to do. While some, like Harper, argue a “shot needs to be fired across Putin’s bow,” says one Canadian expert, others fear such a course of action could dangerously escalate the tensions. Will Harper’s colleagues listen to him? “The prime minister is one of the elder statesmen in the G7, so that lends him credibility,” Fen Hampson, a director at the Centre for International Governance Innovation in Waterloo, said in an interview Sunday. “But there’s a fault line in the G7. I suspect Harper and Barack Obama will be on one side of the street in terms of much tougher sanctions, and the European nations will be on the other given the European Union has trade dependence on Russia.” Hampson predicted the leaders will emerge from the meeting to announce they’re at least temporarily suspending Putin from the G8. “They’ll look weak if they don’t come out in agreement, and by holding this meeting they’ve not only raised the stakes for Putin, they’ve raised the stakes for themselves in terms of moving beyond featherweight sanctions,” he said. “A suspension of Russia from the G8 would send a very strong symbolic message that would be consistent with other international organizations that have suspended members for bad behaviour.” Paul Grod, head of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and part of the Canadian delegation that travelled to Kyiv, says Harper is a respected voice on Ukraine within the G7. “He’s a big fan of the G7 and sees its evolving role on the international scene, not just an economic role but in terms of international security,” Grod said as he stood near Independence Square in Kyiv, at the epicentre of the Ukrainian uprising this winter. “We hope to see when he meets with the G7 that he’ll be able to sway them with personal, first-hand discussions and a view of the situation Ukraine, and convince them to in fact push Russia out of the G8 and make it a G7.” Source: CTV News

B.C. emergency officials defend 9-1-1 response times

Emergency officials are defending changes to how ambulance crews respond to 9-1-1 calls, rejecting claims that patients are being put at risk or are being made to wait significantly longer for medical help. By

downgrading many types of routine or “comfort” calls, ambulances are able to respond more quickly to critically ill patients, and are making roads safer for other drivers because lights and sirens are being used less often, said B.C. Emergency Health Services board chairman Wynne Powell. “We are reallocating the resources we have to get to the sickest patients first. It’s the same number of paramedics and the same number of ambulances, (but) we’re just doing it in a more appropriate fashion,” Powell said on Tuesday. The B.C. Ambulance Service has been criticized in recent weeks by officials in Vancouver and Surrey, who claim residents are waiting much longer for ambulances, in some cases for more than an hour, since a decision last October to downgrade 74 call types from “emergency” to “routine”. Since the changes, first re-

Soaring tuition costs force students to work more hours: analysis

Many university students have to work double, triple and in some cases six times the number of hours in minimum-wage jobs to afford tuition costs compared to 40 years ago, according to Statistics Canada data analyzed by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. According to the data, which track tuition costs from 1975 to 2013, the average number of minimum-wage hours needed to pay for an undergraduate degree in 1975 was 230. That number went up nearly 2½ times to 570 by 2013. Professional faculties have seen the steepest increases. A dentistry student would have had to work 286 hours at a minimum-wage job in 1975 to afford the tuition fee then of $664. In 2013, that same student had to labour for 1,711 hours to pay annual tuition costs of $17,324. The national think-tank acquired tuition data from 1975 to 2013 and compiled a database that compares faculty costs, provincial variations and national tuition cost averages. Armine Yalnizyan, a senior economist at the centre who led the project, said while tuition increases are nothing new, this data provides a historical look at how post-secondary policy decisions can affect university affordability in Canada. “We say to our kids, ‘Go to university if you want a good professional degree,’ but that’s getting more and more difficult to do,” she said. Paul Davidson, president of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, said today’s students have access to a very high-quality education. “I get concerned when we tell a whole generation of people that you’re screwed right out of the gate,” he said. “I think Canada has an outstanding post-secondary education system.” Ontario requires the greatest amount of minimumwage work to pay tuition, going from 260 hours in 1975 to 708 hours four decades later. Saskatchewan’s tuition, measured in the number of minimum-wage hours, went

up more than threefold. Newfoundland and Labrador saw the smallest jump over the years — 16 per cent — through a combination of minimum-wage increases and lower tuition rates. That’s equivalent to about a week more at minimum wage, according to Yalnizyan. Manitoba’s rate of tuition went up from 183 minimum-wage hours to 366 — a 100 per cent increase. University of Manitoba student Aurora Hares, 25, told CBC News she knows how hard it is to balance finances while pursuing a university education. Hares will complete her Bachelor of Science degree this month. It took her seven years, and she had to work a fulltime job at a hardware chain store on top of taking multiple courses. She said some days she worked more than 12 hours and was getting migraines from the stress. “You are always on this treadmill, trying to catch up with what you are doing,” she said. “You have no downtime.” Hares said her heavy course load and full-time job proved too much for her this year. She quit her job to concentrate on school, a decision that came with financial consequences. “It makes me anxious to think about it,” she said. “How much do I owe? How will I pay it back?” Yalnizyan said the data show that when governments decide to do something about education costs, they can make a difference. “We really do need governments to drive down costs, but to be able to do that they need the federal government at the table too,” she said. “It would be wonderful to see the provinces work together to develop a national mission to make it easier for students to study.” “Tuition is always a concern,” said Davidson. “But we have to make sure that we have an education system that’s well- funded, that’s high-quality, and delivers the results that students and their parents expect.” Davidson points out that the data set doesn’t reflect how many students are accessing financial assistance on offer by the universities and the provincial governments. “Forty per cent of students get financial assistance from the institution and, in some cases … as much as 60 per cent of the students in the institution get some kind of discount on their tuition,” he said. sponders are no longer required to attend cases such as falls, traumas, motor vehicle accidents and reports of chest pains with lights and sirens blaring. Vancouver Fire Chief John McKearney recently told The Vancouver Sun he believes the decision to downgrade many emergency response calls ignored information provided by fire departments, who on average respond to 66 per cent of calls before ambulance paramedics arrive. William Dick, who has been consulting with the province’s municipalities on behalf of B.C. Emergency Health Services, said he disagrees with the view that calls are being mishandled. “We’re still providing care to every patient we’re encountering. The same (amount of money) is being spent, it’s just how we’re doing it,” he said. Dick said McKearney had forwarded any cases of concern, and that Dick

had personally reviewed the files. He said that the health of all these patients had not been put at risk. He said that the average wait time, provincially, for an ambulance is six minutes, and in the Lower Mainland it is 10 minutes. For critically ill patients, the average wait time has improved by at least a minute, he said. Powell said officials are reviewing the 114,000 emergency calls that have been received since the change went into effect, and are asking for an independent review to ensure they “got it right.” “This is a journey of constantly trying to improve the system on behalf of the public. There will be ongoing reviews,” he said. “When you do over 500,000 calls a year, it appears this management team is getting it right. We hope that is what the external reviewer will tell us.” Source: Vancouver Sun

Rouhani says Iran sanctions will unravel in months

President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday international sanctions on Iran would unravel in months following negotiations with world powers on its nuclear program, the official IRNA news agency reported. Some international sanctions imposed over Iran’s nuclear program have been eased temporarily after a deal was reached last year with world powers, but Washington has said the lifting of sanctions can only happen “in total” after a comprehensive deal is reached. “With your support, this government has taken the first steps towards the lifting of the brutal sanctions ... We will witness the sanctions shattering in the coming months,” Rouhani told a crowd during a tour of Sistan-Baluchestan, a restive underdeveloped province bordering Pakistan. “Today we already see the sanctions unraveling,” he said, according to IRNA, referring to the modest easing of sanctions in return for concessions made by Rouhani’s government in nuclear talks with world powers. World powers want Iran to curb its nuclear activity, which Western nations fear is aimed at giving Tehran the capability to make a nuclear weapon. Iran denies that, saying its nuclear program is only for power generation and civilian uses. The sanctions have bitten deeply. In late 2012, Iran’s economy was losing billions of dollars per month as sanctions slashed oil sales. Its currency plunged, inflation jumped and the economy went into recession. In an interim deal with Iran reached in November, U.S.

and E.U. negotiators agreed to lift sanctions on sectors such as petrochemicals and precious metals for six months, with broader sanctions relief if Iran agrees to permanent curbs on its nuclear program. The president blamed both the sanctions and “tactless policies” by the previous hardline administration of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for the economic hardship faced by his nation. “Due to the brutal sanctions and unwise administration, our country has faced myriad problems in the past years... but we will break down the inhuman sanctions,” Rouhani said. “We will prove to the world through these negotiations that what has been said about Iran is a lie. Iran has never pursued nuclear weapons and never will.” Negotiators from Iran and the so-called P5+1 - the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany - met in Vienna last week to start drafting a long-term agreement on settling their decade-old nuclear dispute by a July 20 deadline. Western powers, along with Russia and China, want to prevent tensions in the Middle East from boiling over into a wider war or triggering a regional nuclear arms race. Iran exported oil at levels higher than allowed under the sanctions for a fourth straight month in February, ship loading data seen by Reuters showed, raising the risk of a crackdown if Washington feels economic pressure is being relaxed too quickly. Iran’s main clients are mostly in Asia. Source: Reuters

6 E D I T O R I A L Rejection of Quebec Nationalism Jamadi ul II- 18, 1435H April 18, 2014

“Well, I am trying to put Quebec in its place — and the place of Quebec is in Canada, nowhere else.” (Pierre Elliot Trudeau) Nevertheless, the Quebec separatists have always been looking for defying the Canadian Federalism, however, this time they failed miserably because the Quebec Liberals won a landslide victory. Quebec has been constantly threatening to leave the Federation unless it gets more. Due to the blackmail, this province did play well when it came to milking the “mama-federation.” It’s like a spoiled child who gets addicted to receive and receive only. After the recent Provincial Liberal win in Quebec, the threat of separatism seems to be disappearing. Good thing is the Canadians didn’t give up on Quebec, and the Quebecers have spoken in a louder voice this time to remain a part of Canada at all cost. At least, all other Canadians do have a better opportunity now to really love the Quebecers who are equally Canadians too. In simpler words, the recent Quebec Liberals on their landslide win gave a great news for Canadian unity to have a federalist government in Quebec. Winnig a decisive victory over the Parti Québécois means a lot when it comes to a stronger federation in terms of unity. Historically speaking, Mr. Pierre Trudeau entered politics to stop Québec separatism. His government would not grant Québec “special status,” and it met the terrorism of the 1970 October Crisis with a toughness which surprised the Canadians, and alarmed some. The Official Languages Act (OLA) of 1969 implemented bilingual policies that remained controversial for the next quarter

century, even though the act had a simple scope and aim. The OLA was meant so that the Canadians could receive federal government services in either official language. Mr. Trudeau became a sharp critic of contemporary Québec nationalism who argued in favour of a Canadian federalism in which English and French Canada would find a fresh Equality. This term is commonly associated with various movements in Québec since the 1960s, most notably the Parti Québécois (PQ) and the Bloc Québécois. The PQ got re-elected in 1981 on a promise to defer the independence question for at least another full term of office. However, its popular support began to diminish, particularly after the resignation of Lévesque in 1985 and the defection of several prominent ministers. The party got defeated in the provincial election of 1985 by the Liberals under the rejuvenated leadership of former premier Robert Bourassa. Again in October 1995, the PQ government had referendum proposing to negotiate an economic partnership with English Canada following a majority vote in favour of sovereignty. But, about halfway through the campaign Premier Parizeau surrendered his ‘de-facto’ leadership of the ‘YES’ side to the more popular Bouchard. That caused the sovereignists to lose by a narrow margin in the October 30 referendum (49.4% to 50.6%), yet he managed to win a substantial majority among francophone voters. Parizeau resigned by blaming the referendum defeat to “money and the ethnic vote.” He was replaced as premier by Lucien Bouchard. http://thecanadianencyclopedia.

com/en/article/separatism/ Furthermore, on 20 August 1998, the Supreme Court declared unanimously that under domestic and constitutional law, the Québec government could not initiate legal steps toward secession. The federal government and the other provinces of Canada would be obliged to negotiate with the Québec authorities in good faith. Clarity Bill: Dion subsequently drafted the Bill C-20 known as clarity bill under which a “yes” vote in a referendum would be regarded as a “clear majority” on a “clear question.” It would involve more than 50% plus 1 (i.e. a simple majority), it did pass into law in June 2000. Premier Bouchard failed to mobilize increased support for the separatist cause, and this failure, and later internal criticism from the more hard-line separatists in his party, caused his resignation as Québec premier in January 2001. He was succeeded by Bernard Landry in March 2001. Despite his strong and clear reaffirmation of his commitment to Québec sovereignty, he couldn’t deliver. Thus, the support for Québec independence eventually dropped to about 40%, its lowest point since the 1980 referendum. http://www.prime-ministers.ca/ trudeau/issues.php Unless the liberal government delivers economic prosperity within its tenure, the pain of PQ’s “divisive charter of values,” banning Quebec’s public sector workers from wearing religious clothing would continue to have scar marks. The separatists’ hype of “the xenophobia” would worsen the situation by making it illegal for public servants, teachers and medical personnel to wear prominent religious symbols or

Letters & Opinions Victims of Marriage Fraud : the problem persists

By:Krishan Bector Co-founder ( with Palwinder Gill ) Canadian Marriage Fraud Victims’ Society in 2006 It is assumed that the victims of marriage fraud are only girls or brides, which is not true. It has come to the notice of Canadian Marriage Fraud Victims’ Society that grooms are victims too where the girls took max advantage of over protective laws which have leanings towards ladies. In addition to the laws there are many societies which espouse the cause of the abandoned brides and lobby for the redressal of their grievances. Rarely do we find any society that provides protection to deserted grooms.. Whosoever be the victim the society fought tooth and nail to straighten the immigration system and by now has succeeded in getting very bold legislation implemented according to which sponsored spouses are to live in a legitimate relationship with their sponsors for two years or risk losing their permanent resident status. In the words of former Immigration Minis-

ter Jason Kenny, who daringly took this step said, “implementing a twoyear conditional permanent residence period will help deter marriage fraud, prevent the callous victimization of innocent Canadians and help us put an end to these scams” In majority of cases these phony marriges are commecial transactions.” The law puts two-year condition during wich they are to establish living as husband and wife. Since the introduction of the legislation we didn’t get any phone call regarding run away spouses. Ruby Dhalla former Canadian MP who was in India to attend NRI Sammelan in 2013, launched a NGO Charity Dream For You which would work for the young women deserted by NRIs. The Society questions her what she did for the abandoned brides when she was the M.P. of the ruling Liberal Party in 2004. The practice of phony, in some instances, pre-planned paper marriages were going on and there was no voice raised. It was in 2006 the society raised the issue and launched

determined campaign and decided not to rest till the legislative changes are made to halt this mode of marriages. Ms.Dhalla’s interview with Yamini Lohia appeared in The Indian Express ,Saturday November 16,2013 carries the healines: ‘We need to start collecting data on fraud marriages’. She again writes : “we want to take a proactive approach so that before these women actually get married their families research the groom, his family and history.”Here I may comment that there is a race for sending their girls to Canada, parents don’t wish to find out about the NRI boy. Again she plans to open offices in Zirak pur and Mohali. Creation of awareness and counselling hardly reach remote villages where NRIs seek their abandonable brides. In another headline : Ruby Dhalla’s initiative to offer legal aid to the deserted NRI brides appeared in the Tribune Dec 8,2013 . This too remains undefined, whether that aid would be available to fight cases in the so called fast track courts in Punjab/India or in Canada. Ruby Dhalla, had visited India in 2008, when she was still MP.What data has she collected about these forsaken brides, from 2004 to 2011 during the period when she was M.P. or atleast from 2008 to

garb, i.e. hijabs, niqabs, burqas, yarmulkes, crosses, turbans, etc. Remember! Islamophobia has caused a great deal of discomfort for the Muslim community. True, the current liberal victory did neutralize the poisoned minds of the Quebecers who have been carrying the symptoms of separatism from time to time, yet all the previous referendums favouring a united Canada, Bill 101 and the deal with Canada always let the optimism stay in a fragile mode. Hence, the fear remains that the question of Quebec sovereignty isn’t over yet. Since no miracles are expected of Couillard; he is simply unable to fix a large number of Quebec issues within the short span of his tenure. How can we underestimate the aggressive tones of Pauline Marois and her coterie? They certainly will come back bickering about the issue in the near future. Most definitely, the PQ will be more than happy to cash any failure coming from the federation. God forbid, if the PQ is back in power, it will find a way to divide the Quebecers to reach their dirty goals. It’s encouraging to know that Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne is in favor of a joint resumption of the Ontario-Quebec cabinet meetings in the wake of Philippe Couillard’s election. It’s strongly recommended that all of ‎the Canadian provinces must work together to disinfect the country of the “crazy germs of separation” that persistently keep stemming from Quebec. Waan laysa lil insani illa ma’ sa’aa That man can have nothing but what he strives for.

date ? Picture of two brides appear in The Tribune. This story was covered by Rachna Khaira as of January 10,2014. who wites : “Deserted, let down and cash-starved,over 3500 NRI wives in the state have flayed the NRI Privilege Card Scheme of the state government. They have accused the state government of ignoring them and extending benefits to the offenders of the state.” They are Jasdeep Kaur of Jalandhar and Avinash Kaur of Mohali. From the political pulpit to talk about tackling this problem , appears to me that it amounts to gaining political milage out of this pitiable plight of ambitious girls of Punjab. For years former MP . Mr.Ramoowalia has been playing on this sentitive issue, end result is before us. The victims are still victims . Here I agree with Justice Arvind Kumar Chairman of the Commission for NRIs who writes : “NRI fraud Marriages still a knotty affair, Bringing runaway grooms to book remains a challenge for Punjab State.”The victims want their deserters immediately deported from Canada. Only that would quench their firy wrath. The society is working on it without professing lofty claims.

F A I T H Narated By Ibn ‘Umar : While Umar bin Al-Khattab was standing and delivering the sermon on a Friday, one of the companions of the Prophet, who was one of the foremost Muhajirs (emigrants) came. ‘Umar said to him, “What is the time now?” He replied, “I was busy and could not go back to my house till I heard the Adhan. I did not perform more than the ablution.” Thereupon ‘Umar said to him, “Did you perform only the ablution although you know that Allah’s Apostle (p.b.u.h) used to order us to take a bath (on Fridays)?” Sahih Bukhari (Volume 002, Book 013,

Worshiping is good but acquiring knowledge is better By: Nuh Ha Mim Keller Superiority of Knowledge over Devotions a2.1 (Nawawi:) Allah Most High says: (1) “Say, ‘Are those who know and those who do not know equal?’ “ (Koran 39:9). (2) “Only the knowledgeable of His slaves fear Allah” (Koran 35:28). 3) “Allah raises those of you who believe and those who have been given knowledge whole degrees” (Koran 58:11). a2.2 The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: (1) “Whoever Allah wishes well, He gives knowledge of religion.” (2) The superiority of the learned Muslim over the devotee is as my superiority over the least of you.” Then the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Allah and His angels, the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth, the very ant in its anthill and the fish bless those who teach people what is good.” (3) “When a human being dies his work comes to an end except for three things: ongoing charity, knowledge benefitted from, or a pious son who prays for him.” (4) “A single learned Muslim is harder on the Devil than a thousand worshippers.” (5) “Whoever travels a path seeking knowledge Allah makes easy for him a path to paradise. “Angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge out of pleasure in

what he seeks. “Those in the heavens and the earth, and the very fish in the water ask Allah to forgive the person endowed with Sacred Knowledge. “The superiority of the learned Muslim over the devotee is like the superiority of the moon over all the stars. “The learned are the heirs of the prophets. The prophets have not bequeathed dinar nor dirham, but have only left Sacred Knowledge, and whoever takes it has taken an enormous share.” (6) “He who calls others to guidance shall receive the like of the reward of those who follow him without this diminishing their own reward in the slightest. And he who calls others to misguidance shall bear the like of the sins of those who follow him without this diminishing their own sins.” (7) “He who goes forth to seek Sacred Knowledge is in the way of Allah [syn. jihad, def: o9] until he returns.” (8) “This world and what is in it are accursed [dis: w5] except for the remembrance of Allah, that which Allah loves, someone with Sacred Knowledge, or someone learning it.” a2.3 ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (Allah be well pleased with him) said, “The religious scholar is greater in reward than the fighter in the way of Allah who fasts the day and prays the night.” a2.4 Abu Darda’ (Allah be well pleased with him) said, “Teaching Sacred Knowledge for a brief time is better than spending a night in prayer.”

The Miracle repeats its series of 99 Names of Allah (SWT) &Prophet Mohammad (saw) Names and Meanings. In last edition we printed Al-Malik name of Allah(swt) and Ahmad Mohammad(saw) name.

a2.5 Yahya ibn Abi Kathir said, “Studying Sacred Knowledge is a prayer.” a2.6 Sufyan al-Thawri and Shafi’i said, “There is nothing after what is obligatory that is superior to seeking Sacred Knowledge.” a2.7 (Nawawi:) There are similar statements from whole groups of early Muslims I have not mentioned that are like those I have quoted, the upshot of which is that they concur that devoting one’s time to Sacred Knowledge is better than devoting it to voluntary fasting or prayer, better than saying “Subhan Allah” (lit. “Exalted is Allah above any limitation”), or other supererogatory devotions. Among the proofs for this, besides the foregoing, is that: (1) The benefit of Sacred Knowledge affects both its possessor and the Muslims, while the above-mentioned supererogatory works are confined to oneself; (2) Sacred Knowledge validates, so other acts of worship require it, though not vice versa; (3) Scholars are the heirs of the prophets, while

devotees are not characterized as such; (4) The devotee follows the scholar, being led by and imitating him in worship and other acts, obeying him being obligatory and not the other way around; (5) The benefit and effect of Sacred Knowledge remain after its possessor departs, while supererogatory works cease with the death of their doer; (6) Knowledge is an attribute of Allah Most High; (7) Sacred Knowledge, meaning the knowledge we are discussing, is a communal obligation (def: c3.2), and it is thus better than the supererogatory. The Imam of the Two Sanctuaries (A: Juwayni) says in his book al-Ghiyathi that “the communal obligation is superior to the personal obligation in that the person performing it fulfills the need of the Islamic Nation (Umma) and lifts the obligation from it, while the obligation of the individual is restricted to himself.” And success is through Allah [al- Majmu’ (y 108), 1.18-22]. 113K raised for White Rock Masjid

The Muslim community of White Rock held a fund-raising dinner on the evening of April 4 at Royal King Palace Banquet Hall, Surrey. A large number of people attended the event. Mr. Ammad Syed, son of Mr. Asad Syed, was the master of ceremony, who conducted the program very well and summarised the purpose of fundraising. The chief guest speaker, Dr. Reda Bedeir from Toronto started program with recitation of Quran. In his speech, he emphasized the importance and significance to build a mosque and supported his point from the examples of the Holy Quran, Hadith

and the time of the Holy prophet . He specially mentioned the building of Masjid Nabwi as first priority of the Muslims who migrated from Mecca to Madina while leaving all things behind. He said building a mosque is following the sunnah of our beloved Holy Prophet Peace be Upon Him. He encouraged people by saying that Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever build a mosque for Allah – be it large or small – Allah will build for him a house in Paradise. Maulana Abdul Latif Naumani strongly supported this event in his speech and encouraged to participate in this noble cause which aims to build a mosque for the people of Muslim Community living nearby. There was a great presentation by sister Uroosa and sister Mani regarding the details of this project. Br. Ali Khan`s speech also supported the cause of the event. When Dr. Reda Bedeir and Maulana Abdul Latif Naumani started fund raising, Alhamdulillah the community supported and 113K were raised to build the mosque. Overall, the event was a huge success based on exceeded expectations for attendance, for the total amount collected and pledged and the positive experiences reported by attendees. The credit for success of this event goes to Asad Syed and his dedicated team of volunteers and organizers. The new Musallah and community center will be located at 24-15531 24 Ave. InshAllah.

MYC’s 14th Anniversary Fundraising Dinner The Muslim Youth Centre’s 14th Anniversary Dinner was held on Saturday, April 5, at Crystal York Banquet Hall in Surrey. This Centre was founded by Late Br Asghar Hussain, pictured on the left. Once again, MYC attracted an audience of supporters and newcomers who were treated to a jam-packed program chaired by few of societies’ very best; Brother Imaad Ali and Brother Kareem Husain, President of MYC. The program started promptly after Asr prayer with the Qur’aan recitation by Brother Anas. This was followed by a very entertaining knowledge game where prizes were given out. The guest speaker, Br. Habeeb Alli from Toronto, spoke on the theme “Young Hearts.” This was followed by a video presentation

on the events at the MYC from 2013 produced Br. Adam Ishmail. The MYC’s Self Defense class of 23 kids led by Adam Ishmail and his sister Alia showed the skills they have learned at the MYC. They demonstrated the white belt form, nunchuck, broke boards, sparred and self defense. From 2009 to present, this demonstration remains the crowd’s favourite.Imam Sheikh Aboo-Abdis-Salaam did an excellent job fundraising and almost $15,000 was raised including some donation by MLA Sue Hammell. Br. Habeeb Ali was very energetic in auctioning some beautiful items. Congratulations to Brother Ummad Khan – winner of the trip to Fiji Islands. The MYC would like to thank everyone for attending the dinner, donating and participating in this special event.

Alexander urged Canada and its allies to take a “united front” against Pakistan

Pakistan lashes back at Chris Alexander over terrorism comments

During a special edition of Power & Politics on Canada’s 12-year mission in Afghanistan broadcast Monday, Alexander urged Canada and its allies to take a “united front” against Pakistan because it is a state sponsor of terrorism that threatens world security. “This is state sponsorship of terrorism. It’s covert. It’s been denied. Not even Western analysts agree that it’s happening on the scale we know it to be happening,” Alexander, who is a former ambassador to Afghanistan, told host Evan Solomon. ‘United front’ Alexander, who authored the book The Long Way Back: Afghanistan’s Quest for Peace, called for continued support for Afghans who are fighting against the Taliban and for security and democracy as Canada and other countries wrap up prolonged military missions. But he also urged allies to confront Pakistan.“We need

to have a united front in dealing with Pakistan. The civilian government there doesn’t control military policy, strategic policy … the army and the intelligence service do,” he said.” And they have denied the obvious, postponed this reckoning for years with so many terrorist groups, including al-Qaeda, that are doing so much harm around the world, still based in that country, this should be a priority for everyone. Khalid said the Canadian government and people recognize that Pakistan is fighting against terrorism — not supporting it. “Mr. Alexander will be well advised not to pursue a personal and prejudiced agenda on an issue that is of vital importance for the security of our region,” she said. Alexander went on to say the international community must address the Pakistan situation urgently because it’s “all connected”

with other trouble spots — linked to Syria and Iraq because so many militants and jihadis are going there, and also linked to foreign policy on Russia.“The civilian government will say we don’t control it, it happens behind closed doors in places run by the army, run by the ISI [Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence]. The Pakistani population doesn’t know this is happening. But it has to be said.”You cannot, they have not, trained, financed, equipped the Taliban on this scale without the institutional involvement with these groups. And they are negotiating with the Taliban — trying to lie down with the lion inside Pakistan in spite of all the loss of life inside Pakistan. This has got to change.” h t t p : / / w w w. h u f f i n g t o n p o s t . ca/2014/04/02/chris-alexanderterrorism_n_5079665.html

By: Sadia Sameeullah Media Liaison PCCA-BC On behalf the PCCA BC, President Mr. Naveed Waraich, has expressed concern about recent comments on Pakistan made by Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration Minister. He was advised by the Minister’s press secretary, that the Minister’s views are informed by his years working in the

region and writing his book, The Long Way Back. The Minister repeated these views on CBC on April 1st, including deep concern for the well-documented support of terrorism from elements of the Pakistani state, in response to questions asking his personal opinion on Afghan-Pakistan affairs. In a statement to CBC News Network’s Power & Politics, the High Commission

for Pakistan said Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander’s remarks on the program Monday reflect “a lack of any objective appreciation of the ground realities in our region.” The Minister’s press secretary stated: “It is not just that these terrorist groups continue to operate from Pakistani territory: they also enjoy official, albeit covert, sanction and support from some

within Pakistan’s state apparatus. Terrorist attacks underscore the need for swift and determined action by the government of Pakistan against terrorist groups that prey on innocents in Pakistan.” She added that “Canada will continue to work with “the people of Pakistan” and allies to help the country address the challenges it faces and to encourage

freedom throughout the region.” On behalf of the Pakistani Community, President Mr. Waraich advised the Minister’s office that this issue is of critical importance to regional security and appreciates the fact that Minister Alexander’s office recognizes the contributions of the hard-working, law-abiding, and peace-loving Canadians of Pakistani origin.

By: Tariq M Javed (Toronto) Special For Miracle MediaF Most probably, the chronic attitude “Blame Pakistan” stems from the untreated Islamophobia. Because of the misguiding opinion, the Canadians of Pakistani origin end up being nervous. “When it comes to world news, attitude is what marks the distinction between justice and vengeance. Justice is pure, but vengeance brings more ruin.”―Criss Jami The question: Is it fair to keep suffering from PHOBIA directly or indirectly, as it leads to deteriorate the state of general health of all concerned? Nevertheless, it seems as if the ongoing aggressive badmouthing against Pakistan is part of some kind of “hate contest” targeting a country in particular, for point scoring. “I think that hate is a feeling that can only exist where there is no understanding.”―Tennessee Williams Certainly, the Canadian Pakistanis don’t deserve to be emotionally wounded by the irresponsible remarks of the Canadian minister of citizenship and immigration Mr. Chris Alexander who accused Pakistan of “state sponsored” terrorism. Furthermore, he has asked for allies help to take a joint action. Is he the right person to issue such a harsh statement endangering the great country that has sacrificed a

lot while helping the World fighting a deadly war to eliminate terrorists? The immigration minister should rather work on reducing 32 months limit to relieve the waiting Pakistani spouses and kids under 18 by deciding their cases on the fast track basis. Why is the picture entirely different for Indian spousal cases where time span is around a few months? The said minister’s immature comments on the non-issue clearly indicate where these are coming from. How can a minister of citizenship and immigration give statement on behalf of the foreign minister? Pathetic! Surprisingly, the honorable prime minister and the foreign minister are still silent on this one. The big global powers should not forget the fact that Afghanistan has always been a ‘bitter experience’ in the past. Even the allied forces despite Pakistani sacrifices couldn’t succeed in the prolonged war in the area. Obviously, the rugged mountainous region is almost impossible to conquer. The problem is time of withdrawal has come, but terrorism is still a great threat in the region. Even Pakistan is not immune. How can the World forget that Pakistan has been a “frontline State” to help the allied forces to tackle the menace and in so doing lost more than fifty thousand precious lives? (REF) - “Pakistan: State Sponsor of Terrorism?” by Christine Williams for Gatestone Institute, April 7, 2014, Pakistan’s High Commission to Canada rebuked Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Chris Alexander for calling Pakistan a state sponsor of terrorism. “Pakistan is not a state sponsor of terrorism, as naively alleged by Mr. Alexander, but is itself

a victim of terrorism, determined to fight this menace and extend every possible co-operation to our neighbors and allies in this regard,” said Press Counselor Nazia Khalid. Mr. Alexander served as Canada’s ambassador to Afghanistan and authored the book, “The Long Way Back: Afghanistan’s Quest for Peace,” stated on a CBC television news program that “[t]he civilian government there [Pakistan] doesn’t control military policy, strategic policy… but the army and the intelligence service do…. and they have denied the obvious, postponed this reckoning for years with so many terrorist groups, including al-Qaeda.” Update for Mr Alexander: Things have changed as Pakistan is a democracy and the Pakistan military and the ISI are under civil control. Interfering in the internal affairs of sovereign Pakistan is wrong. Mr. Alexander (not a foreign minister) blames Pakistan for the ‘”failed Afghanistan mission” and blames Russia for the “failed Syrian interference.” He mentioned - “they are all connected”. Is he inferring “Russia” as the terrorist sponsor? One wonders: what are his views about China for having strategic ties with Pakistan. The nervous Canadians may think that this nonsense has been designed to divert Canadians’ attention from the long list of difficulties related to the sub standard delivery of the Harper regime. Some problems include the poor omnibus bills that camouflage changes from Canadians, the use of closure in order to prematurely end debate on legislation in many instances, the unfair elections act, and the riding nomination disputes. Scandals re-

garding appointments made by Mr. Harper are disturbing too. Bottom line is whoever speaks ill against Pakistan is either misinformed or is just a tool in the hands of other trouble makers uttering naively. Furthermore, the misinformed President Hamid Karzai also accused Pakistan of being behind a recent series of attacks and of blocking his government from striking a peace deal with the Taliban without substantiating his claim. What should Canada really do? Canada must help Pakistan in tackling neighboring State sponsored terrorism. Everyone knows what’s going on along the Pak Afghan Border in twelve or so Indian consulates engaged in training the BLA (Baloch liberation army) and dispatching professional terrorists to Pakistan for attacking on the pipelines and weakening the writ of State. The terrorism sponsor countries are involved in supplying state of the art weaponry and training to the anti Pakistan TTP (tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan) and most of other 100 criminal groups who are available on cash basis to do maximum damage of life and property in Pakistan. There are groups that are specifically hired to attack the military compounds and security apparatus of Pakistan. If such is the case, Canada must side with Pakistan to sort out the differing thoughts to reach a logical conclusion. Good News for Canada: In fact, after so much destruction, Pakistan is open for business and Canada is more than welcome. Since the whole picture is crystal clear, the honorable minister must withdraw his following statement:

“Canada and its allies must take a united front against Pakistan because it is a state sponsor of terrorism that threatens world security.” The fact is Pakistan has been extending full co-operation, including exchange of information and intelligence sharing to the international community; it has arrested several high profile terrorists and have lost more than fifty thousands of lives in the process in addition to huge property damage. Trouble is, with all the information at their disposal as to the reality of Pakistan’s national issues, some people enjoy making provocative statements based on bias or naivety. They keep blaming with no real substance to back up their claims. Good thing is some countries always maintain softer tones towards Pakistan and say, “we have already made it clear that it is up to Pakistan whether to take military action against the terrorists or to hold peace talks with them. They desire to see peace in the region, including Pakistan. They share a common stance and that’s the main reason they are able to stay united despite the differences.” If the US and the West greatly appreciate all of Pakistan’s sacrifices in the region, and remain optimistic about achieving the shared peace objectives, then Surely, Canada will be an achiever by maintaining its traditional neutrality indeed. Most importantly, one must be able to separate truth from mere allegations. Pakistan’s importance in the region cannot be over looked. Beyond doubt, a happy Pakistan is better for the betterment of the region and the entire World. Long Live, “Canada-Pakistan” Friendship!

High Commission says minister spoke ‘naively’ in accusing country of sponsoring terror. By Kathleen Harris, CBC News Posted: Apr 02, 2014 In a statement to CBC News Network’s Power & Politics, the High Commission for Pakistan said Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander’s remarks on the program Monday reflect “a lack of any objective appreciation of the ground realities in our region.” Pakistan is lashing back at a senior Conservative cabinet minister who accused the country of sponsoring terrorism, warning he should not pursue a “personal and prejudiced agenda” on an issue of crucial importance to regional security. “Pakistan is not a state sponsor of terrorism, as naively alleged by Mr.

Alexander, but is itself a victim of terrorism, determined to fight this menace and extend every possible co-operation to our neighbours and allies in this regard,” press counsellor Nazia Khalid said in the statement. “The fact is that Pakistan seeks to disrupt and dismantle all terrorist entities on its territory,” she said. “The government and people of Pakistan are committed to defeat this evil, no matter how many sacrifices they have to render. Pakistan has been extending full cooperation, including exchange of information and intelligence to the international community. Pakistan has arrested several high profile terrorists and we have lost thousands of lives in the process

Y O U T H

By:Sumayyah bint Joan The adage that ignorance is bliss could not be farther from the truth when seriously put into practical application. Throughout the annals of time, what great accomplishments has ignorance made? What great empires and what marvels of science and technology now bear witness to ignorance’s strength and power? That’s right, none. Nothing of true worth is achieved without wisdom and knowledge. It was with supreme knowledge that Allah, SWT, laid the foundations of the heavens and the earth. It was with wisdom, knowledge and understanding that Soleiman (AS) ruled the greatest empire the world has ever known. Our own Prophet, Mohammad (SAW) told us that acquiring knowledge was a duty placed on each and every Muslim. But the knowledge of what and who, remains the question. Many of us have used the above saying of the Prophet (SAW), to justify dealing in riba (interest), in order to send our sons and daughters to the finest universities to become doctors, lawyers and engineers. We use it to justify sending our children to private schools, because they supposedly have higher academic standing and prestige than Muslim schools. We say we are doing it, because the Prophet (SAW) said to get knowledge, but is this the knowledge he was speaking about? It is narrated by Abu Musa that the Prophet (SAW) said, “The example of guidance and knowledge with which Allah has sent me is like abundant rain falling on the earth, some of which was fertile soil that absorbed rain-water and brought forth vegetation and grass in abundance. (And) another portion of it was hard and held the rain- water and Allah benefited the people with it and they utilized it for drinking, (making their animals drink from it) and to irrigate the land for cultivation. (And) a portion of it was barren which could neither hold the water nor bring forth vegetation (then the land was of no benefit). The first is the example of the person who comprehends Allah’s Religion and gets benefit from the knowledge which Allah has revealed through me and learns and then teaches it to others. The (last example is that of a) person who does not care for it and does not take Allah’s Guidance revealed through me (He is like the barren land).” [Bukhari] Through the above narration, the Prophet (SAW) is telling us of the superiority of religious knowl-

edge. This is the knowledge that we should give priority to. All other knowledge will not be of benefit if we do not have this one. First and foremost, comes the knowledge of Allah. Knowing His names and His attributes. Knowing what is expected of us in regard to our servitude to Him, and what mutual rights exist between us. Secondly, we should strive to know Allah’s Book, the Qur’an. We should learn to read it in Arabic, if we don’t already know how to do so. We should also be trying to memorize as much of it as possible, and stressing the importance of both of these things to our children. Reading the Qur’an should be something commonplace in every Muslim home, and is an activity that the whole family can, and should participate in. Thirdly, we should know about the Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu alayhe wa sallam, and his companions. It’s by reading their stories that we learn of their bravery, love for the Deen and their complete devotion to Allah. It’s by knowing them that we grow to love them, and through loving them, we strive to become more and more like them. This is especially true, when most children nowadays want to be like Mike (Michael Jordan) or Janet Jackson or some other celebrity. They want to emulate these people, because they know so much about them. It then becomes increasingly important for us Muslims to introduce our children to our heroes. Who were braver in battle than Umar and Hamza; who was more wise and gentle than Abu Bakr (RAA); and which women were more graceful and honourable than the wives of the Prophet were? Yes, in these times of increasing technology and information superhighways, it is important to obtain secular knowledge. Also, as a nation, we do need doctors, lawyers and engineers. But we need people who are knowledgeable of their religion first and foremost. What good will it do us to have a nation of professional people who do not know how to make the salah, or to calculate the zakah, or how to perform Hajj? Ignorance is not bliss. Through it runs the deviant courses of innovation, shirk, disunity and hatred. Knowledge is the key to our success. It give us the power to govern ourselves, our households, and ultimately our communities. A nation, which forgets why it was founded, who it serves and what its responsibilities are, by embracing ignorance, is a nation destined to fail.

his From the Pen of the Founding Editor of ‘The Miracle’ During days and

last ever since retiring from the office, many conflicting reports have surfaced in the press revealing the flawed character of Justice Chaudhry and favoring his son in particular. How the Emergency was imposed: The above mentioned occurrences indicate the conflicting relations prevailing between the two most important pillars of the state, the ‘Judiciary’ and the ‘Executive.’

The Trial of the General

Sqn. Ldr. (R) Nusrat Hussain

At the outset, I admit to be a supporter of General Pervez Musharraf. I had the opportunity to serve, as media advisor of his political party, ‘All Pakistan Muslim League’ (Western Canada Chapter) during his visit to Vancouver in January 2011.When I first met with the General at the Vancouver International Airport, I had told him that I was his supporter because of his slogan ‘Pakistan First’. He smiled by repeating, ‘Yes, Pakistan First.’ I have mentioned my fondness for the General and yet; in all honesty, will try my best to offer the prevailing facts surrounding the trial of the General. I promise to present them without any prejudice and by keeping aside my personal preferences for the man. Charges against Musharraf: General Musharraf, has been indicted by the court on the following five charges of high treason as the former Army Chief and the President of Pakistan- the two positions, he simultaneously held at the time: Firstly; on 3rd November 2007, he declared Emergency as Army Chief and held the constitution in abeyance thus committing the offence of high treason. Secondly; as Army Chief, on the same day, he empowered the president of Pakistan to amend the constitution from time to time. Thirdly; on the same day of 3rd November 2007, as President of Pakistan he issued an order “Oath of Office (Judges) Order, 2007” and that

order also resulted in removal of many judges of the superior courts including Iftikhar Chaudhry, the Chief Justice of Pakistan. Fourth and fifth charges against him are related to his actions of 20th November 2007 and 14th December 2007 when he amended and thereby subverted the constitution and thus committed the offence of high treason. Charges against Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry: Justice Chaudhry on 9th March 2007 was called by President Musharraf to explain his position on a list of charges brought against him from different sources. The main charges leveled against Justice Chaudhry were as following: a) CJP forced government officials to unlawfully help his son get admission to medical college and then had him appointed as Grade 18 Police Officer. b) CJP was entitled to use a 1700cc car, but he used a 3000cc Mercedes and kept several other vehicles in his use in Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi. c) CJP required more protocol than he deserved. He required senior officials to receive him at airports and was also using helicopters and planes to go to private functions. d) Use of a BMW Car “RAZIA 1” by his family. e) Different Oral and Written Orders in cases worth 55 million Rupees. f) Asking for more perks more than he was eligible for.

Lawyers of Musharraf are also arguing that a letter was sent by the then Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz to President Musharraf leading him to his decision to impose the emergency. It is also claimed by the camp of Musharraf that the President had consulted the Prime Minister, all the Governors and the top military commanders before declaring the emergency. Fundamental Outcome of the Emergency: Considering the course of later events and the history of relations between the CJP and the President of Pakistan, it is not difficult to conclude that the emergency on 3rd November 2007 was executed to get

rid of Iftikhar Chaudhry from the office of Chief Justice of Pakistan. Statement of Musharraf In the court: In his opening statement before the court, General Musharraf said that he had been called a traitor while he had been the Chief of army staff for nine years and that he served Pakistan army for 45 years. He fought two wars and questioned if it was ‘treason’? Speaking in pure military terms he said, ‘To me a person who sells secrets of the country to the enemy is traitor and traitor is that person, who laid down his arms before enemy.’ Musharraf added, “I am not a traitor. For me traitors are those who loot public money and empty the treasury.” He further said that in 2008 when he left the powers there were 17 billion US dollars in reserves in State Bank out of which 13 billion US dollars were of the Pakistan’s own reserves now only 3 billion dollars are remaining in the State Bank of Pakistan. He questioned as to where the money had vanished. He also mentioned that he had raised reserves from 300 million to 17 billion US dollars and for the first time in the history of the country reduced the loans from 40 billion to 37 billion. During his presidency in Pakistan, the US dollar maintained a steady rate of 60 rupee. Musharraf cannot be termed ‘Traitor’:

An interesting observation regarding the word ‘traitor’ came to light when the Attorney General, Akram Sheikh Prosecuting Musharraf agreed in the court that Musharraf must not be termed as a traitor. Sheikh further added that Musharraf had been elected as the Army Chief and promised that he would never take part in politics, but has broken the constitution by taking part in politics, so he should not be termed as a ‘traitor.’ Validity of High Treason: Anyone facing charges of high treason, if convicted, would be punished as a traitor. The Attorney General has already accepted in the court that Musharraf is ‘NOT a traitor.’ It is now upon the discretion of the Justice system of Pakistan to interpret whether the charges of high treason still remain valid. Why Musharraf is not tried for imposing the Martial Law of 1999: People from different school of thoughts are suspecting the trial to be the resultant of personal vendetta of Sharif against Musharraf. The argument for such a suspicion is based on the fact that Musharraf alone cannot be tried for imposing the Martial Law on 12th October1999 because many other Generals, as abettors, will be folded to the crime of high treason. However, there are chances to single him out to the crime of high treason if tried for imposing the emergency on 3rd November 2007. Hence, a large number of people consider it to be a case of selective justice against Musharraf. How far have I maintained my words of presenting the facts? only you would tell. From the Inside Out

The human mind is a creative force of nature, and throughout history our propensity for imagining new perspectives and concepts allowed humankind to come a long way in a relatively short period of time. By being able to think outside of the box and devise better and more efficient ways of utilizing resources, coupled with a concept of future existence, we gained the foresight and ability to improve the quality and longevity of life by planning ahead; giving us all the more free time to conceptualize and explore our environment. However, this same ability to think beyond given parameters can also give rise to thoughts and actions of a not so beneficial nature. When infused with irrationalism, insecurity, negative assumption or the emotional onus of past experiences, our perceptions and interpretations can be unjustly laden with bias and negativity; unfairly skewing the view of others, ourselves and life in general. The existence of creatively modified negative perspectives is often exacerbated by the in-your-face social environment that exists today as many subsequent attitudes and knee-jerk reactions can be more quickly acted out. Such concepts and issues are further perpetuated by the fact that for many just being aware of, much less being able to work through, a myriad of biased perceptual disparities and misplaced relevance can be an ongoing and often indeterminate impediment to enjoying life. Granted, it is normal to want to minimize guess work in how we interpret life. The precept of sanity alone, or at least the appearance of it, drives most of us to attempt a consistent and somewhat predictable comprehension of our surroundings - that along with not wanting to appear too wishywashy of course. But the simple truth is we are all capable of much more than questionable snap decisions and our gut reactions to them! There may be many situations and outcomes beyond anyone’s control, such as the thoughts and actions of others, but such

variables aside, our daily notions, attitudes, actions and reactions to life, to ourselves and others, are not purely random. Nor are we mere victims of what our heart and mind may or may not conceive and then force upon us, though I’m sure there are those who would disagree. We all have the ability to daily affect and exert critical control over our thoughts, perceptions, actions, reactions and ensuing life experiences! Ironically, this natural inclination to judge quickly and hold fast to perceived realities, regardless of how accurate, when mixed with self-doubt, can become a tenacious hindrance in how you see yourself - with negative assumptions becoming an all too prevalent part of your self-perception. However, like utilizing the power of choice in creating helpful or more positive perspectives in life, it is also a matter of choice whether you maintain denigrating self-perceptions or positively enhance your self-image from within! Creating and believing conceptual variations more representative of who you really are or want to be, along with living a happier more fulfilling life, cannot happen overnight, however. Such a shift can be difficult to put into motion for a variety of long standing reasons and perceptions, and is affected by your ability to replace dubious self-perceptions and attitudes with more positive ones of yourself and others that are aligned with how you want to think, feel, act and be perceived. It also requires a deep seated desire, definitive personal choices, imagination, ongoing effort and willpower. You must also be willing to support the implementation and progress of these perceptual variations with congruent and consistent attitudes and actions while maintaining a clear view of your desired end result. Fortunately, if you do want a happier, more productive outlook on life and yourself, if you do want to live a more enriching life in line with your true self, you just happen to have a very powerful tool at your disposal; the aforementioned creativity of the human mind wrapped in one of the finest machines ever created by nature; the human brain. This gift, when used properly, gives you the mental dexterity to think beyond emotional and intellectual boundaries and status quos. We are all capable of growing, changing and positively affecting our hearts, minds and perspectives in life, and you really can improve your self-image and elevate your view of the world and your place in it. So, when are you going to start treating yourself more fairly? Every day is both a time of new choice and opportunity! Are you willing and ready to move forward?

Our Life! By:Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor We all have ideas of our dream life. A life where every day we can wake up and smile because we’re surrounded by people we love and a passion that stirs our soul. We have to understand that everyone is different. We all have different backgrounds, different motivations, different weaknesses – different stories. This means that what we choose to do with our lives shouldn’t and doesn’t have to be same as others. However, what we can all do is make small steps. Small steps to prioritize the right aspects of life, and small steps to appreciate the beautiful minute that we spend on this earth. Because at the end of the day, whether we are a store clerk, businessperson, or world leader – we all do the same thing. We all eat, sleep, laugh, spend time with family, and try to make the most out of life.

But sometimes it’s hard to remember that fact. Sometimes it’s hard to remember that the world is bigger than you or I. We are all in this together and making a small change at a time makes a huge difference. This realization is what appreciating life is all about. It’s about making our lives and the lives of those around us more meaningful. And it doesn’t require any exotic journeys. What it does require is a willingness to look at your life – deeply – and ask yourself what you’re missing, and what you can do to make your life and the lives of those around you, a little bit better. How you can maintain that life curiosity you had as a child. At the end of the day, it’s about the little things. Dedicating more time to family and friends, dodging the busy trap, fostering compassion‌all the little things lead to a fresh and inspired life perspective. We may not realize that at times we are so carried away by meeting all our deadlines that we forget to realize meeting our small, special and close ends meet. We kind of miss the true essence of life which holds a major place in our life. It is never late to make any healthy choices in life as it will be very beneficial to you mentally, physically. It will surely increase you self-esteem and will be a great asset to your mind, body and soul. shabnam@skcounselling.ca

HEALTH

The Health of Muslim Nation Health is a very crucial concern in today’s society. Despite the fact that new technologies have aided healthcare, yet the numbers are on the rise when it comes to diseases and deaths. What are the reasons for this? What are the numbers for this? Muslim-Science.com decided to conduct a pictorial analysis on the ‘Health of the Muslim World’, in order to asses where we stand in the health Diaspora. The analysis is based on a division of regions, each analyzed according to an indicator. The following are the regions identified:

1. South Asia 2. Sub-Saharan Africa 3. Europe/Central Asia 4. Latin America/Caribbean 5. East Asia/Pacific 6. Middle East/North Africa Each of these regions are judged on the basis of the following 6 indicators: 1. Maternal mortality rate 2. Infant mortality rate 3. Adult mortality rate 4. Average life expectancy 5. Access to clean drinking water 6. Access to clean sanitation facilities

India-Pakistan Test series likely in 2015

Pakistan’s conditional support for the ICC revamp hinges on the promise of six series against India, including a ‘home’ series in the Middle East as part of an upcoming, reworked eight-year FTP cycle from 2015 to 2023, ESPNcricinfo has learnt. The change in the PCB’s stance has taken place on the condition that Pakistan would be involved in bilateral series against all Full Members, including India. If Indo-Pak series are officially slotted into the eight-year FTP, it could also involve a ‘home’ series for Pakistan against India in the United Arab Emirates. The PCB is now waiting for a final confirmation from the BCCI following its Working Committee meeting, which the PCB have been informed, is ex-

pected to take place in the next 15 days. It will then enable the PCB to work out a long-term broadcasting deal with regular India series at its centre. The PCB’s opposition to the ICC’s original position paper that recommended a remodeling of the ICC’s administrative structure and its revenue distribution rested on the argument that it was against the principle of “equality.” However, following certain changes in the resolutions, as well as the possibility of playing India frequently led PCB to support the governance, finance and FTP changes in the ICC, which was driven entirely by the BCCI, ECB and Cricket Australia. ESPNcricinfo understands that all the nine member boards have confirmed

their earlier commitments with PCB until 2020 and are chalking out a fresh plan for the period from 2020 to 2023. The BCCI could look to slot in as many as six series against Pakistan, due to the gaps that are available in the existing FTP calendar. The first of these bilateral series could take place in the UAE in the winter of 2015. “Cricket between both countries is beneficial as the Pakistan government is also keen to revive ties with India on a high note,” PCB chairman Najam Sethi said on Friday following the two-day ICC board meeting in Dubai. India and Pakistan have not played a full series since the 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai, which India blamed on militants based across the border. However,

Pakistan visited India for a short limited-over series in December 2012, but despite not getting any revenue out of the series, it was regarded as a stepping stone in reviving cricketing ties between both countries. Since July 2013, Pakistan have been without a long-term broadcasting deal, one of the major sources of income for the PCB. The PCB already

had to deal with a long-standing budget-deficit, which in August 2013, was calculated at nearly PKR 500 million. The PCB estimates that after committing to the ICC revamp, the financial benefits could reach PKR 30 billion from the bilateral ties, the major chunk of which will be earned from hosting India. Tortorella says veteran Canucks roster is ‘stale’

The day after it was over, the players blamed themselves, and the coach blamed a “stale” roster that needs to be retooled, a process that could take some time for the Vancouver Canucks. With his job on the line, John Tortorella used his podium on Monday morning, as the Canucks cleaned

out their lockers, to the declare the deficiencies he felt he was working with this season. He spoke in measured tones but the words were missiles, aimed in all directions, often at recently fired general manager Mike Gillis. Tortorella described the veteran Canucks roster as stale from the start of the year, said the team lacked depth, and several times said the team and city has to stop thinking about 2011 – the year the Canucks nearly won the Stanley Cup. He called for an addition of younger players to bring enthusiasm and also said some of the core of the veteran roster needed change too. Tortorella was set to meet with new team boss Trevor Linden later on Monday. “The team needs to be retooled,” said Tortorella at Rogers Arena. “It’s a young man’s game.” He added it likely will take time and not be an instant

revival: “You need to be prepared for that.” The coach spoke at a podium in the press room after four veteran players, Henrik and Daniel Sedin, Ryan Kesler, and Kevin Bieksa, appeared together. The group had defended their coach, saying the failings of this season were not the system of play but the players themselves. (Daniel left the ice on a stretcher Sunday night for hospital before being released. He initially couldn’t raise his head after being hit into the boards in the second period against Calgary but hospital scans indicated no problems and there were no concussion issues. “Everything should be okay,” said Daniel.) The Canucks had their worst season in 14 years and scored the fewest goals, in regulation or overtime, for a full season in the franchise’s history. But like a year ago, captain Henrik Sedin said the team was on the

verge. The players presented a narrative in which the Canucks were a true contender last fall but were waylaid by injury in the winter and underperformed. Bad luck – a terrible shooting percentage – compounded the problems. “I don’t think we’re far off,” said Sedin – and then acknowledged he had said the same last year after the Canucks had played four more games than this season, being swept in the first round of the playoffs by San Jose. “It’s not,” said Sedin, “about rebuilding.” The captain sees it one way. The coach, who may or not be around in the fall, sees it another. The new boss, Linden, will decide, likely making the first withdrawal on the tremendous ocean of goodwill Vancouverites have for the revered former Canuck with zero NHL frontoffice experience. Why is our Young Generation not interested in getting married? This is a very common social problem of our society. Parents are worried about their children’s interest in married life. What are the reasons behind this hesitation, are they answerable to their parents? Are parents responsible for that?
