Lawmakers condemned the brazen terrorist assault on Karachi’s old airport terminal late Sunday night. The attack left 28 dead, including 12 terrorists. According to reports, 10 ASF personnel, two Rangers officials, one police officer and three PIA officials are among the deceased.
IRAQ’S MALIKI ‘APPEALED FOR US AIR STRIKES’
Iraq’s prime minister has asked the United States to carry out drone and air strikes against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) fighters, but the US has so far refused to get involved, according to a report. Al Jazeera’s David Schuster, reporting from New York, said while there had been no official comment from the US on the story, US officials had been “quick to point out that the situation in Iraq is under constant review”. “The response could be quite different in the days and weeks ahead,” Schuster said. Sources in Washington indicated that the US was weighing possibilities for more military assistance - including drone strikes - to Baghdad. However, others signalled that the US instead wanted to strengthen Iraqi forces. Sources told Al Jazeera that gunmen had set up checkpoints around the city, which lies between the capital Baghdad and Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city which was captured by ISIL on Tuesday. “All of Tikrit is in the

Terrorism to be crushed with iron hand
The military and national security aides presented on Tuesday options to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for responding to Taliban terror attacks across the country.Mr Sharif’s meeting with his national security team came against the backdrop of possibly the worst wave of terrorist attacks in the country this year. Taliban militants in the country have attacked the Karachi airport, personnel of a sensitive institution in Fatehjang and troops in tribal areas and those having sanctuaries in Afghanistan have carried out deadly strikes on border posts in Bajaur. Sectarian militants affiliated with Taliban have, meanwhile, targeted pilgrims in Taftan. Those who attended the meeting included Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif, Chief of General Staff Lt Gen Ishfaq Nadeem Ahmad and head of counter-intelligence at ISI Maj Gen Nasir Dilawar Shah. A brief statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office said: “Matters relating to internal and regional security, including Fata, Karachi and Balochistan were discussed.”The meeting also reviewed reports by law-enforcement agencies on the recent incidents based on preliminary findings.
Prime Minister Sharif has so far been sticking to the dialogue option for finding a solution to the Taliban militancy. However, a source claimed that the military had ramped up pressure for a sterner response to the attacks by Taliban. The military’s case has been built on the premise that the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan has again started owning up the strikes; and Fatehjang and Karachi attacks, in particular, mark the crossing of the redline. Officials were not ready to say if the government agreed to the military demand for more punitive strikes.“The prime minister is looking at a range of options and a final decision may be taken at a meeting of the National Security Committee likely to be held later this week or next week,” an official said. It is said that before taking a decision the prime minister will also like to see progress on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Sardar Mehtab Khan’s attempt to use tribal jirga for evicting militants from North Waziristan. The discussions at the national security meeting will be internally shared by the military at its Formation Commanders meeting on Wednesday. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday termed the approval for a loan of US$700 million for Pakistan by the World Bank as a ‘historical achievement.’ He was speaking with Finance Minister Ishaq Dar who called on him in his chamber at the National Assembly and apprised him on the World Bank’s approval for financing the 4500 MW Dasu Hydro power project. The prime minister said that about $600 million will be utilised for Dasu Hydro Power Project and $100 million for the Sindh Irrigation project. Prime Minister Sharif congratulated Ishaq Dar and his team for this remarkable achievement and said “it shows the confidence of multilateral donors and foreign countries in the economy of Pakistan.” He said the projects would reduce power shortages and
help in better utilisation of water resources. The finance minister said the World Bank’s loans were “purely concessionary and cheap.” “The repayment schedule is spread over a period of 25 years including five years grace period, with low interest and nominal administrative charge of two per cent annually. It will also help in the reduction of domestic debt,” Dar added.Federal Minister Dar later told the National Assembly that the World Bank has allocated $588 million for the Dasu Dam by approving it unanimously. The minister also said that the government has allocated Rs55 billion for the construction of the dam while there is no need to get a No Objection Certificate (NoC) from any neighbouring country in this regard. Violent attack on pilgrims in Taftan-Balochistan
SHAHEEM ALI Realtor & Mortgage Consultant Email : As many as 30 people were killed and several others injured when a suicide bomber stormed a hotel in Taftan, where Shia pilgrims were staying, and blew himself up, late on Sunday . While talking, Balochistan Home Secretary Akbar Hussain Durrani said that around 300 Shia pilgrims had entered into Pakistan from Iran and were staying in two hotels in Taftan, a border town. “They were waiting for transportation for onward journey to their destinations in different parts of the province,” the home secretary said and added that a suicide bomber entered into one of the hotels and blew himself up. As a result, three Shia pilgrims died on the spot while several others were injured. Levies personnel and Frontier Corps (FC) cordoned off the area. The security personnel exchanged fire with the militants, who hurled hand grenades and fired with sophisticated weapons. The dead and injured were shifted to a nearby hospital. Arrangements were later made to shift the injured to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) through helicopters. Meanwhile, other security sources told that two suicide bombers entered both the hotels and only one of them was

4 I N T E R N A T I O N A L Ottawa will go ahead Israel selects Rivlin with income splitting, as next president despite critical report Shabaan 15, 1435 June 13, 2014
Employment Minister Jason Kenney says the Harper government has no intention of backing away from its income splitting pledge, despite a new report concluding the plan would exacerbate income inequality and bestow the most benefits to the West. Kenney made the statement in the House of Commons on Tuesday while debating an NDP motion to do away with the idea. The report by the leftleaning Broadbent Institute concluded that income splitting would benefit the most affluent single-income families, cost about $3 billion, bestow no benefits to 90 per cent of Canadians, and transfer a disproportionate amount to families in Alberta and Saskatchewan, Conservative strongholds with the strongest economies. In 2011, the Conservatives pledged to allow the transfer of up to $50,000 from the higher-earning spouse in a family with children under 18 to the lower earner, thereby reducing the overall tax bite. It said it would introduce the legislation as soon as the budget is balanced. But while the proposal appears to be popular with Canadians, the latest Broadbent study -- as have others before it -- shows the vast majority of families would see no benefit, because they either have no children under 18, have spouses with similar incomes or are single-parent families. The latest study breaks new ground in finding wide regional disparity in how the benefits will be distributed. It turns out that among the target group -- families with minor-age children -- the biggest winners by far reside in Alberta, where the average annual tax saving would be $1,359, while families in Saskatchewan come in second at $1,070. Those two provinces, which have a combined 42 federal ridings, sent 40 Conservative MPs to Ottawa in the 2011 election. Families in Prince Edward Island would get the least average benefit at $488, followed closely by Quebec families with children, which would average $510 in benefits. Those
two provinces were among the least productive for the Conservatives, electing only six Tories among their combined 79 MPs in 2011. By ascending order of benefits, qualifying Nova Scotia families would average $727 in benefits, followed by Manitoba ($772), New Brunswick ($787), British Columbia ($853), Ontario ($874) and Newfoundland ($925). Broadbent Institute executive director Rick Smith has no explanation for the regional disparity other than that the program as unveiled was designed for a particular type of family -the so-called “Leave It to Beaver” traditional home with a principal breadwinner and a stay at home spouse who takes care of the children. To benefit the most, one spouse must make $100,000 more than the other and have a taxable income above $136,270, the highest marginal rate. Of families with children under 18, the average tax saving is calculated at $841, although that includes the 54 per cent of those households that receive no benefit at all. But for 147,000 Canadian families with a high-income breadwinner, the average benefit would be $7,128. The lack of broad-based benefits is expected to be a major campaign issue should the Conservatives go ahead with income splitting in next year’s budget. It was one reason cited by the late finance minister Jim Flaherty when publicly expressing doubts about the program earlier this year, touching off a fire storm among Conservative MPs who remain committed to seeing it implemented. Kenney was one of the ministers who publicly disagreed with Flaherty and said the government would keep its promise. Although polls show income splitting is popular, Smith believes one reason is that most Canadians assume they will benefit, when in fact they likely won’t. Without seeing the results of the study, which was given to The Canadian Press prior to the official release . Source: CTV News
It may seem like a glamorous lifestyle, but Vancouver police are warning young women of the dangers of dating gangsters following a drive-by shooting that sent a local socialite to hospital with a serious gunshot wound. “We are warning young women to be very careful of who they are associating with,” Sgt. Randy Fincham, spokesman for Vancouver Police, said at a media briefing Monday. “We would hate to see something happen with them just because they are hanging out with the wrong person.” The shooting unfolded around 7 p.m. Sunday when an unknown person in an SUV opened fire on a woman and a man who were outside their car at a gas station on East Hastings Street near Vernon Drive. Fincham would not confirm the victim’s identities, but a source told Metro on Monday that the woman is 28-year-old Mia Deakin, daughter of reality TV star Jody Claman of the Real Housewives of Vancouver. Deakin, who regularly appeared on the Real Housewives, goes by the name Mia Claman on the TV show. “We do believe at this time that this was a targeted shooting,” said Fincham. “This was not random.” The woman suffered a serious gunshot wound to her shoulder and was taken to hospital where she underwent surgery, said Fincham. She is now in stable condition, he said. Her male companion, an unidentified 27-year-old, suffered minor hand injuries. He was treated in hospital and released, but was later arrested on an unrelated warrant.
During their investigation, police became aware of an outstanding warrant for the man related to driving while prohibited and took him into custody, said Fincham. A motive for the shooting is not yet known, and it’s unclear which of the two was the intended victim, Fincham said. Police are investigating if the man has any links to gang activity, he said. As the investigation continues, Fincham said police are searching for the grey or silver-coloured SUV involved in the shooting, which was last seen going east on Hastings Street. Although dating a gangster is a “very dangerous lifestyle choice,” Fincham said it seems to be a growing trend for some young women in Metro Vancouver. In recent years, he said police have noticed an increase in the number of women becoming intended targets or getting caught in the crossfire of gang-related violence. “It appears to be a lifestyle choice that people get trapped into,” he said. “The fast money, the nice cars, the pricey bar tabs, the expensive clothes seems to be a lure for young people.” Sunday’s shooting isn’t the first time a Real Housewives of Vancouver star has been linked to gang activity. Former housewife Reiko MacKenzie’s ex-husband is Sun MacKenzie, who was a suspect in the 1994 murders of Jim and Ron Dosanjh, reportedly victims of a turf war between rival factions of a drug gang. Sun was later acquitted of the charges. Source: Metro News

Reuven Rivlin has been selected as the 10th president of Israel, ending an ugly and hardfought campaign to replace the outgoing head of state, Shimon Peres. Rivlin received 63 votes in a second-round runoff on Tuesday in the Knesset, the Israeli parliament. He defeated Meir Sheetrit, a centrist politician, who received 53 votes. Rivlin is a former Knesset speaker and a member of Likud, the party headed by prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He received only reluctant support from the Netanyahu, however - the two men have a personal feud stretching back years. Netanyahu spent weeks trying to delay the election and recruit candidates to run against Rivlin. At one point he tried to recruit Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, who is not even an Israeli citizen. The incoming president is a staunchly right-wing politician. He does not support Palestinian statehood, or an Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank; instead, he has said he favours giving Israeli citizenship to Palestinians. He has also been sharply critical of undemocratic laws introduced in the Knesset in recent years, particularly a bill to raise the electoral threshold, which would drive Palestinian parties out of the parliament. The 90-year-old Peres restored some prestige to a presidency that had recently been tarnished by scandal. His predecessor, Moshe Katsav, is currently serving a seven-year jail term after being convicted of rape, while Ezer Weizman, who held the job before Katsav, retired early amid corruption charges. The post is largely a ceremonial one, however, and Peres spent much of his term putting a friendlier face on the policies of an increasingly rightwing government. Rivlin has already said he will focus on domestic issues; his stance on
the two-state solution, though, might have a symbolic impact, if not a substantive one. “It might have made a difference if he had a lot of moral authority,” said Mark Heller, an analyst at the Institute for National Security Studies. “But it’s not enough to move the government in one direction or another, and whenever the president opens his mouth on these issues, he’s sharply reminded to stay out of politics.” Netanyahu praised Rivlin after his win, calling him a “unifying” figure, and other politicians from both left and right offered their support. “It’s no secret that I didn’t vote for Reuven Rivlin,” said Tzipi Livni, the head of the centre-left HaTnuah party. “But we are from the same movement… which believes in true democracy and statehood.” Three other candidates, including a former Supreme Court justice and a chemist, were knocked out in the first round of voting. The sixth declared candidate, Benjamin BenEliezer, dropped out of the race this weekend after police questioned him on allegations of corruption. Source: Al-Jazeera
Iraq PM calls emergency after Mosul seized
The Iraqi prime minister has called for a national state of emergency after the city of Mosul and parts of the northern province of Nineveh fell to al-Qaeda-inspired fighters. Nouri al-Maliki said on Tuesday that he would ask parliament to declare the emergency after the overnight takeoverby the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. He said: “We will not allow Mosul to be under the banner of terrorism, We call on all international organisations to support Iraq and its stance in fighting terrorism. The entire world will suffer if terrorism spreads.” He stated that the government would arm civilians who volunteered “to defend the homeland and defeat terrorism”. Osama al-Nujaifi, the parliament speaker, said Iraqi soldiers abandoned their posts in Mosul when the attack began, action he described as “a dereliction of duty”. Nujaifi said parliament would discuss the call for a state of emergency on Thursday. Reports by AFP later on Tuesday quoted Iraqi police sources as saying fighters had taken over areas of Kirkuk and Salaheddin province. Syrian activists meanwhile said ISIL fighters had taken over the Syrian side of al-Yaroubiya crossing, one of three crossings into Iraq. Nujaifi, who is the brother of
Atheel al-Nujaifi, the state governor, said he had asked the US ambassador in Baghdad for help in order to stop what he described as “a foreign invasion by ISIL”. A pro-ISIL Twitter feed said the group had released about 3,000 people from three prisons, although other estimates were lower. Mosul is Iraq’s second largest city, and the second city to be captured by fighters this year after Fallujah. “We have lost Mosul this morning,” a colonel at a local military command centre told the Reuters news agency. “Army and police forces left their positions and ISIL terrorists are in full control. It’s a total collapse of the security forces.” Al Jazeera’s Imran Khan, reporting from Baghdad, said Maliki faced opposition to his call for a state of emergency, which would grant him sweeping powers. Khan said: “Many politicians have vocally criticised Maliki’s handling of the crisis. Many in Iraq are asking why a lightly armed group like ISIL have been able to take over huge cities. “Some here worry that a state of emergency will give Maliki sweeping powers that once he has, he may well find difficult to give up.” Source: Al-Jazeera

Ukraine to create humanitarian corridors
Ukraine’s new President Petro Poroshenko has ordered the creation of humanitarian corridors so civilians can flee areas of the east hit by conflict. Scores have died in recent fighting in the eastern Ukraine between government troops and pro-Russia militants who want to break away from Kiev. Thousands of people are thought to have been displaced by the fighting. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov welcomed Mr. Poroshenko’s move, but said what was needed most was a ceasefire. The government in Kiev says Moscow is backing the armed separatists in the east, an accusation that Russia denies. At his inauguration on Saturday, Mr. Poroshenko had promised he would provide safe passage for “Russian militants” out of Ukraine. In a short statement on Tuesday, his office clarified this further, saying that “to avoid new victims in the zone of the anti-terrorist operation, the president has ordered the responsible ministers to bring about all necessary conditions for civilians who want to leave”. The government has also been ordered to provide transport, food and medical supplies for local officials to be able to handle the expected inflow of displaced people into other areas of Ukraine. The move to create these corridors may allay concerns from human rights groups about Kiev’s use of tanks and air power to suppress the pro-Russian militia. But Mr. Poroshenko has still not accepted the Kremlin’s request to allow Russian aid into the east - a move that Kiev fears could be used to arm the rebels. The violence is continuing in two eastern regions, Donetsk and Luhansk, where separatists have declared independence. Pro-Russia gunmen are holding several government buildings, and Ukrainian troops are taking part in a “counter-terror operation”. Some of the worst attacks have been in and around the towns of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. After a meeting in the Russian city of St Petersburg on Tuesday with his Russian and Polish counterparts, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said there had been a “new atmosphere” in recent days, and that he could see “the light at the end
of the tunnel”. But Mr. Lavrov dismissed this, saying clashes were continuing and in some cases, “becoming even more intense”. He said that regardless of the varying views on the crisis, the focus must now be on an “unconditional and immediate ceasefire” and productive dialogue. Mr. Steinmeier also called on Russia and Ukraine to cooperate more closely on controlling their shared borders. Mr. Poroshenko has called for daily meetings on the situation in the east, involving representatives from Kiev, Moscow and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). The fighting is concentrated in regions which have extensive trade and cultural ties with Russia. The countries are also locked in a dispute over gas supplies, with Russia saying Ukraine owes it almost $2.5bn (£1.6bn) in backdated payments. Russia vastly increased its prices after the uprising which ousted Ukraine’s pro-Moscow government earlier this year, and Kiev has so far refused to pay the full amount in protest. Russia had given Ukraine a deadline of Tuesday to pay some of its debts or face being cut off, a move which potentially could disrupt supplies to the EU, as about 15% of Europe’s gas from Russia transits through Ukraine. Talks between officials from both countries were due to begin in Brussels on Tuesday evening, but have been postponed by a day because of the late arrival of the Russians. Source: BBC News
Indian president lays out new economic agenda
India’s new government will pursue an economic reform agenda that foresees introducing a general sales tax, encouraging foreign investment and speeding approvals for major business projects, the president has told parliament. Pranab Mukherjee also said on Monday the new government would engage energetically with its neighbours, including China. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government will “urgently pursue” reforms to the state-run coal sector to attract private investment, Mukherjee told politicians elected in Modi’s landslide victory last month. In an address to the two houses of parliament which was drawn up by Modi’s new cabinet, Mukherjee said India’s economy faced “extremely difficult” times and that inflation was “unacceptably” high. The speech also included a series of ambitious policy goals that had been laid out in the election manifesto of Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), including the creation of 100 new cities and a revamp of the railway network. “The country is passing through an extremely difficult phase on the economic front,” said Mukherjee. “Putting the
economy back on track is paramount for my government.” “My government will strive to get India on a high growth path, reign in inflation, restart the investment cycle ...[and] restore investor confidence,” he said. India’s economy has been growing at below five percent for the past two years, far below the level needed to lift millions of people out of poverty, while inflation is currently running close to nine percent. Modi’s conservative BJP, which defeated the ruling centre-left Congress party in polls in April and May, made reviving the economy the main platform of its campaign as well as promising to clean up government. In the speech, Mukherjee said that “my government ... will be predictable, transparent and fair” and “was committed to providing a clean and efficent administration focused on delivery”. The government would “make every effort” to fulfil its pre-election promise to bring in a new general sales tax and would also “embark on rationalisation and simplification of the tax regime” to make it less “adverserial”, Mukherjee said. Assad tops list of Syria war crimes suspects handed to ICC: former prosecutor
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad tops a list of 20 sample war crimes indictments of government officials and rebels drafted by experts for prosecution someday, a former international war crimes prosecutor said on Tuesday. The list has been handed to the International Criminal Court (ICC), citing for each incident a specific violation of the Rome statute under which a suspect could be charged, according to David Crane, an ex-chief prosecutor of the Special Court for Sierra Leone and now head of the Syria Accountability Project. A separate team of U.N. investigators has drawn up four confidential lists of war crimes suspects on all sides in Syria, but declined to reveal any names. Crane said the list compiled by his expert group included members of Syria’s military and political elite plus Islamist rebel groups ISIS and al-Nusra Front, although he gave no names beyond Assad. “We have about 20 indictments of those who bear the greatest responsibility. This is a neutral effort. We’re not just going after Assad and his henchman, we are actually documenting all incidents on both sides,” Crane told Reuters. He was speaking after taking part in a panel discussion about torture and other crimes committed in detention centers during Syria’s civil war, which began with peaceful anti-Assad demonstrations in March 2011. Images taken by a Syrian military police photographer codenamed Caesar, published in January, supplied “clear evidence” showing the systematic torture and killing of about 11,000 detainees in conditions that evoked Nazi death camps, former prosecutors including Crane have said. “We rarely get this type of evidence, most of it is circumstantial,” Crane said of the 55,000 photographs of bodies, many with gouged-out eyes and bearing signs of starvation. “Make no mistake about it, these photographs could not be faked. This takes responsibility for what happened up the ladder of responsibil-
ity. It is not an act of a maverick colonel or a mad major, this is government policy,” said Sir Desmond de Silva, co-author of an analysis of the “Caesar” photos and another former Sierra Leone chief prosecutor, told the panel. A six-week offensive by ISIS against rival Islamists in eastern Syria has killed 600 fighters and driven 130,000 people from their homes, a London-based monitoring group said on Tuesday. Crane, an American professor at Syracuse University College of Law in New York, launched its Syria Accountability Project in 2011 to document war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by all sides in Syria’s conflict. It now has 1,400 pages of credible allegations, with the date, place and unit suspected of committing crimes, he said. “At the beginning, 90 percent of the violations were Assad; it’s now 50-50 (percent),” Crane said, referring to crimes committed by rebel forces fighting to topple the Syrian leader. Last month, Russia and China vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution to refer the situation in Syria to the International Criminal Court for possible prosecution of war crimes and crimes against humanity. De Silva said that if the Council remained blocked on the matter, a tribunal on Syria could be set up if more than two countries entered into a treaty. “It may in fact be the only realistic course that can be taken. What we can’t have is international justice stalled in its tracks.” Source: Reuters needs to be done. But he added that the government is proud of “the effective and incremental steps taken in partnership with Aboriginal communities” and committed to making “significant progress” in improving the lives of Aboriginal people. Valcourt said his office would review the report to determine how to address the recommendations and thanked Anaya for “his important work.” Source: Al-Jazeera

hands of the militants,” a police colonel told the AFP news agency. A police brigadier general told AFP that fighters attacked from the north, west and south of the city, and that they were from ISIL. Iraqi state television reported that special forces soldiers were fighting to regain control of city. Sources claimed the Iraqi soldiers had cleared the city of ISIL fighters, but these reports remain unverified. The Geneva-based International Organisation for Migration said the Mosul takeover had “displaced over 500,000 people in and around the city”, a quarter of the city’s population. The Turkish government also said that ISIL had stormed its consulate in Mosul, taking staff and the consul captive. The UN Security Council on Wednesday condemned the upsurge of violence and the taking of Mosul by what it described as a “terrorist organisation” attempting to destabilise the region. The 15-nation council also demanded the immediate release of the Turkish hostages.

Strategic Strike at the Commercial Hub Regardless of legality, the strategy of warfare against Pakistan has changed from the conventional methodology to non-conventional approach. Believe it or not, disarming a nuclear armed country is not that easy. However, the cunning enemy has found out the remedy alternatively. They know the proxy is the best answer and that’s exactly what has been happening in Pakistan for more than a decade. Therefore, it’s not wrong at all to expect the enemy attack 24/7 from any un-imaginable angle. Among the available tools are the “Fool Taliban,” that includes those belonging to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and many other groups. In fact, there are more than hundred groups and factions residing in the hide outs of Waziristan/ the Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA) which is strategically located between the Pakistan-Afghanistan border and the settled areas of KPK (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa). It’s generally believed that there are good people and bad people residing in the FATA. But the area is mostly infested with criminal groups that are conveniently available to the internal and external enemies of Pakistan based on who pays them the most. The said criminals are also involved in drugs and other crimes for their livelihood. Naturally, heavy cash attracts them to do anything. Remember! If the criminal culture prevails, the reli-
gious people are among the innocent sufferers as collateral damage. The fact is religion has nothing to do with the nasty behaviour of criminals/terrorists. Only heavy cash motivates them to attack the military and civilian targets beyond doubt. Since Karachi happens to be the commercial hub of Pakistan, it’s in the best interests of those who want to make Pakistan bend backward. Especially, attacking the international airport is a signal to the world about the safety issue aimed at nothing but isolating the country economically. Sadly, the aftermath of five-hour attack on the Karachi airport left at least 37 dead including 10 militants. This reminds us of all the previous terrorist attacks on army bases on GHQ in 2009, PNS Mehran in 2011 and on the Kamra airbase in 2012. As usual, the Taliban have taken responsibility of this first largescale attack on a civilian installation. It was aimed at hijacking as claimed. Whoever the terrorists were, they demonstrated their reach and skill which is comparable to that of highly trained army soldier. Based on sophistication, it can be safely assumed the Karachi attackers had foreign commandos among them. The breaking news brought Pakistan on TV channels all over the globe just for the nonsense. Doesn’t this indicate a failure of
Pakistan law enforcement apparatus? Where was the ISI, MI or civil agencies? Unbelievably, the enemy managed to enter the most secured of site. This shows the true level of protection to Pakistanis is almost zero, and the sub standard governance is all we see. Nevertheless, at the terrible hour, it was Pak Army that showed up as usual to defuse the alarming scenario. Rightly, the public always ends up loving the armed forces. Question is what is it that makes Taliban jump in taking responsibility based on revenge or several other nonsense reasons which divert public attention away from the possible foreign hand? Although, the magnitude of terror strike suggest differently, yet the TTP itself is claiming the attack. Maybe, it is trying to take the CREDIT just to FAKE its power. Reportedly all attackers met their fate and their bodies are now in the state’s custody for further action to establish their identities and whereabouts. If the story as told by the Taliban is believed to be true, then Pakistan needs to fix itself internally sooner the better. On the contrary, some people believe that the Karachi attack was carried out by the foreign agencies and army soldiers from the neighboring countries, but the TTP had to claim responsibility just to tell that TTP was still alive. Unless the writ of state is ade-
quately protected, the human life remains vulnerable, national exchequer will be touching the bottom in the absence of secured economic activity. If the most secured areas are vulnerable, what can be expected in non secured public areas? Enough is enough: Why should the terrorists be allowed to continue crippling the country and making people’s life miserable? Any negotiated settlement with the terrorists/aggressors is pointless unless the enemy is first pin pointed, declared and designated officially. Pakistan armed forces must be given a free hand to crackdown on these foreign sponsored terrorists who have made our country a living hell. Pakistan National assembly, the senate, and all provincial assemblies must be on a single page to legislate some tough laws to deal with the ongoing terrorism, militancy, social and economic terrorism keeping in view of non conventional warfare. All private parallel governments and feudalism must be declared unlawful and unconstitutional. Now or never approach to deal with challenges may offer some way out. Waan laysa lil insani illa ma’ sa’aa That man can have nothing but what he strives for.

‘SUCCESS OF ‘D’ DAY’!
By: Gulshan Aalani An eye opening commemoration of ‘D’ day, the Battle of Normandy, WWII 6th June 1944: remarkable an allied invasion of Beaches of Normandy, Utah, Omaha, Juno, and Sword, that launched 156, 000
soldiers comprising of Americans Canadians, Polish, Belgium, Czech, Dutch, and Norwegian, Free French resistance fighters, involvement of General Charles de Gaulle, Winston Churchill, and huge amount of war equipments of 5000 Ships, 12,000 Planes, etc. All contributing to the success, as all united for the common cause as all done in the name of ‘Liberation’. Though, the turning point of success of ‘D’ day battle for Normandy and defeat of Nazi Germany was made possible by the allied forces described as the biggest and largest military amphibious invasion: and the intelligence work of destruction of 1,800 railway locomotives, cutting telephone wires and blowing up telegraph poles throughout Normandy, destroying the railway system, and railway lines, stations and locomotives were blown up, crippling German movement to ensure to defeat the evil regime. Seeing and listening to the Veterans slipping back in time remembering the heart breaking events, taking us to the reality of wars its gain and
loss. The Days of devastation and hardship of war, casualties of 425, 000, yet standing firm for the good cause to fight against the Nazi Germany, and to get rid off the notorious ruler Hitler that can described as the true struggle Jihaad (not holy war, nor suicide bombing) to help and save other nations from the tyrant rulers. Allah-Creator-GOD has given permission to the Authority to fight ‘In the way of GOD, in the cause of GOD’, by following the Sharia-rules of wars, and to be the Human Rights Activists that sees no color, culture, or religion. In the pre-Islamic period and in early days of Islam, there were many tyrants like Hitler, with Nazi systems, but worst, without any human dignity, abducting young women off the street, possessing against their will, slavery was in full fledge, killing of female child, Alcohol, drugs, Opium consumed openly on the street, and so as usual GOD raised another Prophet to teach the resistance against evil, to fight and Liberate the down trodden oppressed people, and to straighten the tyrants by introducing the owner the Ruler the true GODCreator, to have HIS fear and to follow HIS rules and regulations of ethics, moral values, true humanity and to be the Samaritans. Similar to following the law of the Land. Violation of just the traffic Signs one has to pay the penalty as it brings the disastrous results, and so violation of the Di-
vine Law has the wrath of GOD. Without HIS fear, (or fear of Police Officer) mankind would become like Hitler. Yet, the preachers Jack Van Imp and Pat Robertson the anti-GOD, anti-Christ, abusing Allah-Creator-GOD, and the critics of HIS final Revelation: Pat Robertson without any ethics or respect of the Divine, promoting the book written by his ‘friends’ the anonymous writers, tyrants, the enemies of GOD, degrading and misinterpreting the Quran verses, fully supported by Pat Robertson who likes to eat Pork Pig’s meat that is forbidden in the Bible, and violating the law of GOD by not preaching the true original Christianity. On the other hand the good true Christian Rev. Dr. Meredith (tomorrows world. Org) is preaching the original Christianity that is not any different than Islam or the rules of Divine mentioned in the revelation Quran, as it is the continuation of the past Divine Revelations of warning and guidance. It is like parts or grades 1, 2, 3 and so the basic divine rules remain the same. So let us ask these religious tyrants who think the law of GOD to ‘fight’ in the cause of GOD is wrong, then do they think the ethic allied invasion and battle of Normandy was wrong too?

Fasting in Shaban to honor Ramadan
Sha’baan is the name of the (Eighth) month, and it is so called because in this month the Arabs used to disperse (tasha’aba) in search of water, or it was said that they dispersed to carry out raids and forays. Or it was said that it is so called because it sha’aba (branches out or emerges) i.e., it appears between the months of Rajab and Ramadaan. The plural forms of the word Sha’baan are Sha’baanaat and Sha’aabeen. Sha’baan is one of the meritorious months for which we find some particular instructions in the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam. It is reported in the authentic ahadith that Prophet Muhammad, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, used to fast most of the month in Sha’baan. These fasts were not obligatory on him but Sha’baan is the month immediately preceding the month of Ramadan. ‘Ummul Mu’mineen ‘Aishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: “The Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast until we thought he would never break his fast, and not fast until we thought he would never fast. I never saw the Messenger of Allaah fasting for an entire month except in Ramadaan, and I never saw him fast more than he did in Sha’baan.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, no. 1833; Muslim, no. 1956). A group of scholars, including Ibn alMubaarak and others, thought that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not fast all of Sha’baan, but he fasted most of it. This is supported by a report in Saheeh Muslim (no. 1954) narrated from ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her), who said: “I never knew of him – meaning the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) – fasting for any
entire month apart from Ramadaan.” According to another report also narrated by Muslim (no. 1955), ‘Ummul Mu’mineen ‘Aishah said: “I never saw him fast for any entire month from the time he came to Madeenah, apart from Ramadaan.” It was reported in al-Saheehayn that Ibn ‘Abbaas said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not fast any entire month apart from Ramadaan.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, no. 1971, and Muslim, no. 1157). Ibn ‘Abbaas regarded it as makrooh to fast any entire month apart from Ramadaan. Ibn Hajar (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “He observed more voluntary fasts in Sha’baan than in any other month, and he used to fast most of Sha’baan.” Usaamah ibn Zayd (may Allaah be pleased with them both) said: “I said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, I do not see you fasting in any other month like you fast in Sha’baan.’ He said, ‘That is a month to which people do not pay attention, between Rajab and Ramadaan, and it is a month in which deeds are lifted up to the Lord of the Worlds. I like for my deeds to be lifted up when I am fasting.’” (Narrated by al-Nasaa’i, see Saheeh al-Targheeb wa’l-Tarheeb, page 425). Ac-

cording to a report narrated by Abu Dawood (no. 2076) she said: “The most beloved of months for the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to fast in was Sha’baan, and his fasting in Sha’baan was continuous with his fasting in Ramadaan.” (Classed as saheeh by alAlbaani, see Saheeh Sunan Abi Dawood, 2/461). Ibn Rajab (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “Fasting in Sha’baan is better than fasting in the Sacred Months, and the best of voluntary fasts are those that are (observed in the months) closest to Ramadaan, before or after. The status of these fasts is like that of al-Sunan al-Rawaatib which are done before and after fard (prayers) and which make up for any shortfall in the number of obliagtory prayers. The same applies to fasts observed before and after Ramadaan. Just as al-Sunan al-Rawaatib are better than other kinds of voluntary prayers, so fasts observed (in the months) before and after Ramadaan are better than fasts at other times. The phrase “ Sha’baan is a month to which people do not pay attention, between Rajab and Ramadaan” indicates that because it comes between two important months, the Sacred Month of Rajab and the month of fasting, people are preoccupied with those two months and they do not pay attention to Sha’baan. Many people think that fasting in Rajab is better than fasting in Sha’baan, because Rajab is one of the Sacred Months, but this is not the case.
These reports indicate that fasting in the month of Sha’ban, though not obligatory, is so meritorious that Prophet Muhammad, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, did not like to miss it. But it should be kept in mind that the fasts of Sha’ban are for those persons only who are capable of keeping them without causing deficiency in the obligatory fasts of Ramadan. Therefore, if one fears that after fasting in Sha’ban, he will lose strength or freshness for the fasts of Ramadan and will not be able to fast in it with freshness, he should not fast in Sha’ban, because the fasts of Ramadan, being obligatory, are more important than the optional fasts of Sha’ban. Fasting towards the end of Sha’baan: Ibn `Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Do not observe Saum (fasting) before the advent of Ramadan. Observe Saum at sighting of the crescent of Ramadan and terminate it at sighting the crescent (of Shawwal). If the sky is overcast, complete (the month as) thirty (days).’’ [At-Tirmidhi]. Ammar bin Yasir (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: He who observes the fast on a doubtful day, has in fact disobeyed Abul-Qasim, (i.e., Messenger of Allah (PBUH)). [Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi]. “Doubtful day’’ here signifies the day of 30th Sha`ban. In other words, if the moon is not sighted on 29th of Sha`ban because of clouds and a person observes Saum, he will be in doubt whether it is the 30th of Sha`ban or the 1st of Ramadan. Thus, there is no need to observe Saum on a doubtful day, and one should complete thirty days of the month of Sha`ban.

F A I T H Narrated Hzt ‘Aisha:(r.a) The Prophet never fasted in any month more than in the month of Sha’ban. He used to say, “Do those deeds which you can do easily, as Allah will not get tired (of giving rewards) till you get bored and tired (of performing religious deeds).” The most beloved prayer to the Prophet was the one that was done regularly (throughout the life) even if it were little. Volume 3, Book 31, Number 191: And whenever the Prophet offered a prayer he used to offer it regularly .
By: TAJ AHMAD Protecting consumers from malpractices of traders and commercial organizations is an important responsibility of any state. Qur’an and Hadith laid down the basic structure of consumer protection some 1,400 years ago which are as valid today as they were during the golden age of Prophet (peace be upon him) and the rightly guided caliphs. Qur’an categorically denounces all unfair means in Surah An-Nisa: “O you who believe! Eat not up your property among yourselves in vanities: but let there be amongst you traffic and trade by mutual good will.” (Qur’an, 4:29) Surah Mutaffifin prohibits all kinds of mischiefs by traders including misrepresentation, adulteration and fraudulent products collectively called as ‘Tatfeef’: “Woe to those that deal in fraud; those who when they take a measure from people, take in full. But when they have to give by measure or weight to them, give less than due.” (Qur’an, 83: 1-3) While passing by a seller, Allah’s messenger once came upon a heap of grain and when he put his hand inside it, he felt some dampness. He asked the owner, why is this dampness? The owner replied, rain had fallen on it, O Allah’s messenger. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said; why you did not put the damp part on top of the heap so that people might see it, then he said; whoever cheats is not from us (Muslims). Sellers have the responsibility to disclose any defect or shortcoming in the merchandize enabling the customer to make an informed decision and should not twist the facts to misguide or confuse the buyer. In the contemporary shopping markets and malls, traders have very rigid returns exchange and refund policies, some of them allow only a few days to return and some do not refund even though the items are in good conditions. As part of good consumer practices, Islam asks traders to give the customer right to return the goods. Allah’s messenger said whoever accepts back what he had sold to a Muslim, Allah will forgive

his faults. (Abudawood) With regard to correct weight and measurement, the glorious Qur’an says: “So establish weight with justice and fall not short in the balance.” (Qur’an, 55: 9) People of Madyan were subjected to Allah’s retribution and were destroyed by thunderbolts and fire from the sky as they used to cheat people in different ways and did not listen to Allah’s messenger Shoaib, who warned them not to manipulate the scale. When traders commit widespread exploitation of consumers through different ways of deceit depriving poor buyers of their hard earned money, it is state’s responsibility to save the society by implementing effective legislation for consumer’s protection. Hoarding is another corrupt practice which is used to artificially inflate the prices, whereas Islam tells that prices should be determined purely by demand and supply function. Allah’s messenger said none withholds goods till the price rises but a sinner (Muslim). Once prices rose to a higher level in Madinah and people came to Prophet (peace be upon him) saying; Allah’s messenger prices have risen high, fix them for us. Allah’s messenger replied, “Allah is the One Who fixes prices, Who withholds, gives lavishly and provides. And I hope that when I meet Allah, none will have any claim on me for injustice regarding blood or property.” (Al-Bukhari) This Hadith indicates that arbitrary fixing of prices is prohibited because it may cause loss to businessmen on one side and on the other it creates a madeup famine. However state has the prerogatives to regulate prices in exceptional cases. Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “A city dweller should not sell the merchandise of a villager (Muslim).” The rationale behind this Hadith is that the city dweller might withhold it until prices escalate whereas the villager will try to sell it as soon as possible. Though due to growing distance between cities where the produce is consumed and the farms where it is harvested, it has become necessary to have storage houses and middle men in the cities. But other measures should be taken to control hoarding and maintain prices at

Al-Ihsan Women’s Vocational Center in Bangladesh Al-Ihsan Women’s Vocational Center of Bangladesh is the women’s chapter of Al-Ihsan Social Development Center located in Hashara village of the Munshigonj district of Bangladesh. Alhamdulillah, this is the 10th year of Al-Ihsan which started on 2004 in a Tin shed house with 30 part time adult women. It’s now located in 3 storey high raise building with 200 full time young girls from pre-kg to grade 7 and 50 part-time adult women. By the blessing of Allah (SWT) and with your help and the hard work of Al-Ihsan committee in Canada it had many achievement in this 10 years. Al-Ihsan has proved its incremental success in last 3 year’s Grade 5 School Board Exam. Al-Ihsan reduced the rate of early marriage by5% in last 10 years. Al-Ihsan reduced the health expenses of the students by 50% by feeding them a nutritious diet and observing a mandatory exercise program.Admission requests to Al-Ihsan have increased tenfold since the school was inaugurated. The vocational training received from Al Ihsan has empowered some of the girls to establish their own tailoring business. Some of the adult women are part-time students as well as work at the school. The wages so earned are used to support their families. A one hour daily compulsory class for all has proven to be of immense value
in educating the participants in Arabic; Qur’anic recitation and in everyday Fiqh Al-Ihsan started a group study program after school under an instructor’s supervision; this not only removed the necessity of studying at home but also improved learning outcomes tremendously. Al-Ihsan started a scholarship program for meritorious and serious students. This encouraged others to work harder at their studies. Al-Ihsan teachers just received training from an experienced teaching professional from Canada. A visiting Canadian School Principal, who gave for the sake of Allah a full training session to the staff of Al Ihsan had this to say as she summarized her tour there: There are NO manipulatives (e.g. cubes/counters, materials to teach “hands on” math, or for science experiments, games, building blocks, toys for the very young, etc..) There are No reading materials, fiction or non-fiction (other than text books) .There are No crayons; very limited quantities of pencil crayons (one small box for a whole class to share), No maps, globe, No recess break or daily physical activity. In short, there aren’t sufficient materials/resources for teachers to effectively teach using a totally interactive and child centered teaching method. Al-Ihsan adult students joined in a new
workforce with Freedom Factory sponsored by LAH Sourcing of Canada. Awareness campaign and periodic seminar were organized by Al-Ihsan to educate Al-Ihsan students and their family members against early marriage and this had an extra ordinary result in the surrounding villages. Al-Ihsan Women’s Vocational Center of Bangladesh just completed their annual fundraising dinner on June 7th 2014 at York Conference Center in Surrey, BC and Alhamdulillah they have raised substantial amount of fund but still behind of $10,000 to operate the school from July 2014 to June 2015 We are still behind in our vision but we hope for your continuous dua and active participation to reach our goal. Al-Ihsan Women’s Vocational Center in Bangladesh accepts Zakatul Fitrana every year and provides food to the entire student’s family during Eid ul Fitr. Al-Ihsan also accepts the Qurbani share (this year, a share of cow is $100 and a whole goat is $150). They distribute these meats to the student’s family and reserve some for the student’s lunch for entire year. Please contact the following brothers for more information or to donate your share. Hundreds Celebrate Opening of Surrey Community Hub
Hundreds of people came out to celebrate the opening of the new Surrey Community Hub on Saturday. “It was a fun event filled with inspiring dialogue. Surrey is fortunate to have so many talented and motived people who are helping to build a vibrant community,” says Councillor Barinder Rasode, who launched the Hub as a way to connect with residents and businesses. “The Hub is a gathering place for people to network and share ideas about the priorities and concerns in our city. It is also a space the community can use to host events and showcase local artwork.” Saturday’s Open House brought together local business leaders, community associations, families, and elected officials from around the region for a dialogue about the future of Surrey. The Hub is one component
of Councillor Rasode’s summer ‘Listening Tour’ which is designed to gather feedback from people about their priorities and where they think Surrey City Council should focus its time and resources. “I think election platforms should be developed by the community. So, will I spend the next several months listening to residents and gathering valuable information about how City Council can move forward and build an even better city.” The Surrey Community Hub is located in Sullivan Square at 15385 Hwy 10, Unit 103 and is open Monday to Friday. For more information about events and activities taking place at the Hub, please visit: https://www.facebook.com/surreycommunityhub or email: surreycommunityhub@ gmail.com

Chris says citizenship bill will withstand constitutional test
Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander says a challenge to the government’s prized citizenship bill by the Toronto lawyer who successfully challenged Justice Marc Nadon’s appointment to the Supreme Court of Canada doesn’t stand a chance in court. In an interview on CBC News Network’s Power & Politics on Tuesday, Alexander said the challenge “doesn’t have much of a hope.” “There is no constitutional issue here,” he told host Evan Solomon. Bill C-24 would give the government powers to strip Canadian citizenship from dual nationals “who were members of an armed force or an organized armed group engaged in armed conflict in Canada.” Citizenship would also be revoked from dual nationals who have been “convicted of terrorism, high treason, or spying offences.” Toronto lawyer Rocco Galati warned MPs,
senators and the Governor General, in separate letters sent on Monday, not to pass Bill C-24 until the government referred a key provision of the bill to the Supreme Court for a legal opinion. At the heart of Galati’s challenge are provisions contained in the citizenship bill that would strip dual nationals of their citizenship and bar them from reacquiring it. Galati said he would apply for a judicial review with the Federal Court if he did not receive a response from the Governor General by Monday. Galati, who also appeared on CBC News Network’s Power & PoliticsTuesday, said the federal government does not have the power to remove the citizenship of persons born in Canada. “They are acting completely outside of the Constitution in a renegade, reckless and flagrant manner. And they know it,” Galati said. Revoking the citizenship of dual nation-
als is “offensive,” “unconstitutional” and simply “beyond the government’s authority,” he argued. The lawyer from Toronto said the bill would give the government powers to revoke the citizenship of dual nationals, but not of those who acquired citizenship after immigrating to Canada as permanent residents. “Where is the logic in that?” Galati asked. Alexander noted that Galati represented a relative of former Guantanamo Bay detainee Omar Khadr, who is now serving a sentence of eight years behind bars in Canada after pleading guilty to five war crimes. “He also defended, a senior member, the patriarch of the Khadr family, who was a senior member of al-Qaeda,” Alexander said. Galati once represented Khadr’s older brother, Abdurahman Khadr, who was held for a time as an enemy combatant at Guantanamo Bay. “His objection here seems
to be to the idea that committing an act of terrorism, treason, or espionage says anything about your qualifications to be a Canadian citizen. We think it does,” Alexander said. Galati said the minister’s comments were “neither here nor there.” The Canadian Bar Association has also raised “serious concerns” with the citizenship bill. In a 30-page submission to Parliament in April, the Bar Association said the citizenship bill raised “serious human rights concerns” and key provisions in the bill were “likely unconstitutional.” Alexander said the concerns came from “a small section” of the Bar Association and did not represent the views of Canadians. The Bar Association will once again give its views on the citizenship bill. Source: CBC News
Jasbir Sandhu Member of Parliament Surrey North
Canadians to second-class citizens. One of the critical missteps of the bill is the requirement that naturalized citizens must declare their “intent to reside”. This provision would require potential citizens to sign that they will live in Canada after they gain citizenship. Unfortunately this clause is written vaguely, leaving many concerned that it will impose unnecessary travel restrictions on Canadians. At this point, the legislation does not specifically define how long one must reside in Canada and what constitutes a violation. Canadian citizens who travel internationally, including to study or work abroad, could be considered as violating their “intent to reside” commitment. The Minister of Citizenship and Immigration could then revoke their citizenship under the pretense of fraud. There would be no appeal, no hearing, and no recourse. Even citizens born in Canada could have their citizenship revoked if they break the law in Canada or abroad. This includes naturalized Canadians who retain citizenship in another country, as well as citizens born in Canada to foreign parents. For example, whereas a Cana-
dian citizen is imprisoned for a certain crime, a dual national who commits the same offense could be exiled, possibly to a country they have never been to before. I have major concerns about how permanent residents will be able to access citizenship in the first place. Years that applicants, such as international students and live in caregivers, spend in Canada before they are granted permanent residence will no longer count towards the residency requirement for citizenship. By refusing to count this time towards citizenship, Conservatives will delay the naturalization process for these targeted groups, while allowing more favoured groups to proceed at the standard rate. It is true that the Canadian Citizenship Act needs to be improved; it is considered out dated and inefficient. However, the Strengthening Citizenship Act is a misnomer, because it does not offer effective solutions. It drives immigrants out with its discriminatory tones, rather than welcoming them in with open arms. It strips naturalized citizens of their due rights, trapping them in a lower tier of society.
The main issue with Citizenship and Immi gration Canada is the absurd backlogs. The standard processing times for a citizenship application to be processed is 24 months, yet I routinely see applications that take much longer in my office. This is unacceptable. However, rather than productively addressing the backlog, the Conservative solution appears to be creating longer wait times before a permanent resident could apply for citizenship. If the goal is really to strengthen our citizenship and immigration system, then we must promote language education and healthy job markets, rather than erecting senseless barriers and stripping equal protections. Strengthening Canadian citizenship is not about advancing this government’s political and ideological agenda. Conservatives continue to fail Canadians by prioritizing their own goals rather than putting Canadians first. Along with my NDP colleagues, I will continue to fight for a fair, efficient, transparent and accountable immigration system.
Strengthening Citizenship the Right Way
Canada is a country that proudly recognizes and embraces diversity. As a nation, we pride ourselves on being a welcoming and inclusive community. As the basis of our multicultural identity, our citizenship and immigration system should enhance Canadian society, and all Canadians should be able to access the rights that accompany the title of “Canadian citizen”. As a naturalized citizen myself, I understand the opportunities that our nationality grants us and I am proud to be Canadian. The government is proposing changes to the current system for citizenship through Bill C-24, the Strengthening Canadian Citizenship Act, which is currently in front of the House of Commons for debate. The bill does make several notable improvements, such as conferring long-overdue citizenship to the ‘Lost Canadians’ and implementing penalties for fraudulent immigration consultants. Yet other provisions introduce troublesome roadblocks that will prolong naturalization and downgrade many

What a shame: The psychology of control
By: Oksana Tashakov Parenthood is emotionally laden work. No matter how much we want to do things differently from our own parents, we can only do what we know, what we learned — not what we know is better. A very common mistake parents may make is to use guilt or shame to control and teach their kids.On Psychology Today, Dr Nancy Darling relates the story of a man and his son, and the former’s recognition that he was attempting to control his son’s feelings. Control, not in terms of teaching his son self-control, but in terms of manipulating how his son felt. An example: the man asked his son for help with yard work. When the son balked at it, the father related stories from his own childhood, about working with his father and other older relatives, how he had felt good about what he did and how he had created special memories. The son responded by writing his father a poem about a man who was trying to inflict his own childhood on his child. Dr Darling points out that expecting your child to do chores is reasonable. Demanding that he/she like it is something else altogether. When you do this, you are manipulating their feelings, confusing them about their thoughts, and inducing guilt. Parenting styles, explains Darling, are characterised by three concepts: warmth, behavioural control and psychological control. How much you convey emotional support and love for your child describes your degree of warmth. That means recognising
that they are not simply extensions of you, that they may feel and think differently from you, and have unique needs. Behavioural control is an important part of the parenting process. You need to set expectations and rules for your child’s behaviour, help them conduct themselves in certain ways no matter what they feel. Psychological control refers to how much you try and control your child’s beliefs and feelings. This, says Dr Darling, assaults the child’s sense of self. Authoritative parenting produces kids that have high self-esteem and independence. They do well academically and socially. Authoritative parenting is made up of high degrees of warmth but also behavioural control. Parents who are overly psychologically controlling produce anxious and lonely kids, who have low self-esteem and may become involved in delinquent behaviour. Telling your kids what they feel, who they are, what they like, according to what you want them to be, confuses them about their unique feelings and identity. Your needs become their needs. Using excessive guilt or withdrawing love and affection if your child doesn’t comply constitutes emotional blackmail. On More 4 Kids Info, a parent describes the guilt tool as an improper one for controlling your child’s behaviour. Feeling bad doesn’t help kids learn from their mistakes, but instead produces anxiety and fear in them. In an article on the online encyclopedia JRank, the author differentiates between guilt and
Positive LifeStyle: Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor In life, we need to learn so many lessons but unfortunately, there are few people willing to learn these lessons. Those who learnt these important lessons are those finding it easy in their daily living. They have passed through so many experiences and have learnt a lot. The majorities that are unwilling to learn these lessons are those who are struggling in their lives and seem to see life as being unfair to them. In life, there may be a point at which things
are not easy at all. There may be so many harrowing experiences, but these should be taken as joy as there are lessons to be learnt from those experiences. After passing through these experi-
shame: guilt is about behaviour while shame is about the self. The view here is that guilt can drive a child to do better: it is an acknowledgment of wrongdoing, while shame occurs when children feel that they are deficient or unacceptable and this is true no matter what they do.Can guilt help kids to be moral? What do we do so that we don’t cross the line and make our kids feel ashamed? On SFHelp.com, social worker Peter Gerlach says that guilt and shame often occur together. Just by reacting to our children with certain body language, facial expressions and vocal tones, we can send them the message that they’re intrinsically bad or wrong.Gerlach believes that, as parents, we need to continually reaffirm to our children that mistakes are common, normal and opportunities for learning, that we need to continually reaffirm our kid’s self-worth no matter what mistakes they make or moods they get into. Kids need to know that they are always loved, no matter how they act or what they do and we need to recognise that they have their own feelings. You can recognise excessive guilt or shame in your child through a number of signs. None of these necessarily mean that your child is suffering, but if your child exhibits many of these signs, it’s definitely worth investigating. Your child may suffer from excessive guilt or shame if they never care about their hygiene or dressing, or if they are obsessed with how they appear. Are they perfectionist or overly driven to be the best? Do they avoid taking respon-
sibility for their beha-viour by denying, lying or otherwise camouflaging their mistakes because they fear criticism and disapproval? Are they people-pleasers or are they overly critical of others? Are they overly passive or overly aggressive? Do they sabotage their success? Can you pick up on core beliefs that they have? Beliefs that they are unloveable, undeserving, unattractive, unintelligent, bad or weak? Are they overly defensive? Do they beat themselves up when they make mistakes? You can help your kids manage excessive guilt or shame by managing your own guilt and shame. Many of the things we say and do role model this behaviour for our children. Look at your behaviour: do you have too high expectations of your child? Do you compare them to others? Do you assume they should feel as you do?Use discipline instead of guilt or shaming. State your expectations and encourage responsibility. Help your kids recognise feelings and talk to them about them without naming them. Explain to them that guilt doesn’t have to be a bad thing, that there is a difference between “being bad” and “doing bad.” Don’t feel ashamed if you’ve used the guilt tool too often or have imposed feelings on your child. All of us have done this at one time or another. Just as your child needs to understand that they have the potential to do better, so you too have the opportunity to rectify your mistakes.Oksana is an expert executive and life coach specialising in personal effectiveness and success strategies.
ences, we discover so many important life lessons that we tend to share with others. It pays to have a dream! With a dream, there is no limit to where you can get to or what you can achieve in life. An individual may have several dreams in their life. At times, it is so unfortunate that so many people live their lifes without a dream. They do not realize that they are shortchanging themselves by not having something to live for. This world is replete with dreamers and they are the people making so much impact in our world today. In every field of human endeavor, there are so many people
that started with nothing but a dream. Their dreams took them to where they couldn’t have ever imagined. It’s important to know that your life is not complete without a dream. Waking up and doing the same routine over and over again for your entire life is not something you should experience. A dream you conceive today can take you to places you can’t even envisage today. The greatest favor you can do yourself is to live for a dream and a big one for that matter. It is always good to dream BIG. shabnam@skcounselling.ca

On average, every six days a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner. 67% of all Canadians say they personally know at least one woman who has been sexually or physically assaulted. Shakti Society is a non-profit society that is committed to empowering women, children and families in our community. We are hosting a community café in June to address violence against women. We have held community cafes in the past to address this issue and to get the community engaged in conversations that we hope will bring about societal change starting from a personal level. This year, we want men to get involved in taking responsibility for this ongoing issue and to look at how they can bring about positive change. With this aim, we are hosting our third community café – ‘Violence Against Women: A Male Perspective’. We have planned this café closer to Father’s Day as an acknowledgement of a day that is beloved to most, yet could mean much more than a superficial acknowledgement of a Hallmark holiday.

By: Robert C. Koehler “When you go to dig your fields, or make a pot from clay, you are disturbing the balance of things. When you walk, you are moving the air, breathing it in and out. Therefore you must make payments.” Oh, unraveling planet, exploited, polluted, overrun with berserk human technology. How does one face it with anything other than rage and despair, which quickly harden into cynicism? And cynicism is just another word for helplessness. So I listen to the Arhuaco people of northern Colombia, quoted above at the Survival International website, and imagine - or try to imagine - a reverence for planetary balance so profound I am aware that when I walk I disturb it, so I must walk with gratitude and a sense of indebtedness. Walk softly, walk softly . . Instead, I live in this world: “Deep sea ecosystems are under threat of mass industrialization, warned a panel of scientists on Sunday,” according to Common Dreams. “Speaking at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Chicago, the scientists warned that without international cooperation with a focus on ‘deep-ocean stewardship,’ deep sea mining will follow the destructive examples set by commercial fishing and offshore fossil fuel operations.” And this: “Native Americans in the mid- and uppermid West are not waiting idly as President Obama and the State Department finalize their ultimate decision on the Keystone XL pipeline which would trans-
WALK SOFTLY! port tar sands - the planet’s dirtiest fuel from mining operations in Canada to the U.S. gulf coast forexport,” also according to Common Dreams. “In Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska, tribal groups and indigenous activists are busy planning the best ways to resist the pipeline - which they have dubbed the Black Snake - if it gains approval.” Chemical spills, radiation leakage, broken mountaintops, plastic waste that will never decompose, a depleted ozone layer, a floating garbage dump in the Pacific Ocean the size of a continent - all this, and so much more, are the result of normal life in the 21st century. And then there’s war, the biggest polluter of all, with its horrific, toxic aftermath, from depleted uranium contamination to unexploded bombs to the lingering animosity of the defeated, waiting to explode. Maybe it’s the human condition that’s toxic, but I don’t really believe that. I don’t think it’s greed that is pushing us to the outer limits of self-destruction, but something more complex. Call it addiction, call it servitude. We’re trapped in obedience to a force that demands, in payment, everything that we value and everything that we are: our planet, our souls. Consider, for instance, this looming matter of deep-sea mining and the inevitable disturbance of deep ecosystems. What could propel such reckless audacity? A panelist at a recent meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science simply described it, according to Common Dreams, as a “surge in demand for con-
sumer devices, such as portable electronics and batteries for hybrid vehicles,” which, she said, “is pushing mining companies to expand their operations to the ocean floor to seek out hard-to-find rare earth elements such as nickel, cobalt, manganese and copper.” I don’t think consumer demand - for throwaway high-tech paraphernalia would drive the human race to the bottom of the ocean in search of rare metals, at some unknown but possibly terrible cost to the planetary ecosystem. I actually think most “consumers” would vote no on this activity, and so many others that have already occurred. I don’t think we’re so utterly separated from indigenous tribespeople that we can’t imagine and long for deep connectedness to our planet and a sense of responsibility for its continued state of delicate balance. I think, rather, we’re driven, as a global culture, by the phenomenon of money, which is an invisible force more than it’s something tangible and graspable.
“Created as interest-bearing debt,” Charles Eisenstein writes in his excellent book, Sacred Economics, “(money’s) sustained value depends on the endless expansion of the realm of goods and services. Whatever backs money becomes sacred: accordingly, growth has occupied a sacred status for many centuries.” The economy we’re caught in is out of control. It can’t stop growing. Thus it keeps pushing into new territory, consuming what Eisenstein refers to as “the commons,” i.e., the context in which we live: environmental, social, cultural, spiritual. Economic forces invade, claim and sell everything, from the split atom to our own imaginations. This is what we serve, and this is what we must stop serving. We have to learn what we once knew: how to live in grateful service to what we truly value. To the Arhuacos, indigenous residents of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain range, “the Sierra is the heart of the Earth and their role is to protect it,” according to Survival International. “. . . . Their religion, culture and cosmology are staggeringly complex.” We know so much. I hope we don’t know too much to learn from the marginalized peoples of the world, who still value and strive to protect the context in which we all live. “Afghanistan’s Survival” Post NATO Withdrawal
By:Tariq MJaved) The US led NATO forces have been in Afghanistan for so long now that it is almost hard to remember why they went in. (Frank Gardner talks to former Afghan Intelligence Chief Amrullah Saleh) 28 January 2013 Last updated at 00:06 ET= http://www.bbc.com/ news/world-asia-21225926. However, the officials often justify by asserting that it was in direct response to Al-Qaeda’s attacks of 9/11, planned from Osama Bin Laden’s Afghan base. Surprisingly, there is no explanation as to why there have been more than 100,000 troops from 51 countries for more than a decade. And, despite the large number of highly trained army combatants, the insurgency remains a major threat. Reportedly, by the end of this year, the NATO combat units will quit which means the Afghanistan’s national security forces will be on their own when faced with the insurgency. Initially, the U.S. led NATO forces went into Afghanistan to free the people from the allegedly oppressive regime and to stop terrorism worldwide, yet nothing worked as intended except the country ended up in a real mess. Consequently, there is heightening in the terror activity/insurgency in and around Afghanistan. The expensive “NATO forces’ stay” in Afghanistan reminds of Vietnam-
like scenario. Thousands and thousands have been killed that includes the innocent, the elderly and the children. But the bloody conflict is still far from over and of course the financial strain is tremendous. Wars can be partially won by first hitting the ‘command-and-control’ centre by the air force just to overpower the enemy through destroying its offensive/defensive/ capability. The combatants on the ground have rough time fighting an asymmetric warfare because of the the general population around. Trying to win the “hearts and minds” doesn’t work either especially when the locals have suspicions about the intruders or foreign occupiers. The Afghanis are born fighters who love to fight to save each inch of their land. They never compromise when it comes to foreign dominance. Historically, in the past, no foreign army has ever been able to conquer Afghanistan. It’s the tough resistance that makes the attackers retreat. Having lost another war, the NATO is now in ‘retreat mode.’ Billions and billions of dollars have been wasted in Afghanistan. Mr Obama finally is realising the gravity of the situation: “We have to recognize that Afghanistan will not be a perfect place, and it is not America’s responsibility to make it one,” Obama said. And, recently, he admitted the lengthy U.S. presence in Afghanistan is proof that “it’s harder to end wars than it is to begin them.” He outlined a plan to withdraw all but 9,800 American troops by the end of 2014 reducing the number to half by the end of 2015. A complete pull out would take place by the end of 2016. The left over troops will have advisory role, train Afghan forces and help guide missions to weed out the remaining al Qaeda remnants The U.S. military presence beyond 2014 is
conditional upon Afghan government signing a bilateral security agreement. In this regard, the outgoing Afghan President Hamid Karzai has already flatly refused to sign the said treaty. But, the two leading candidates in Afghanistan’s presidential race, Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani, seem more than willing to sign the treaty quickly right after one of them wins in the second round of voting set for Saturday June 14. Apparently, Pakistan is nervous adjusting to changes in Afghanistan after 2014. It wants its own influence in Afghanistan where India has little or no presence. The problem is the “non-Pakhtun Afghanis” view Pakistan suspiciously in its power struggle with “Pakhtun Afghanis.” Pakistan’s concern is the non-Pakhtuns’ friendship with Iran and India. President Obama acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts to support an ‘inclusive reconciliation process’ in which Afghans can determine the future of their country. In this regard, both Obama and Nawaz Shareef are in agreement to let the Taliban join the political process and enter into dialogue with the Afghan government. Furthermore, Pakistan’s policy depends on the ethnic division in Afghanistan. It seems as if Pak-Afghan relations will not undergo much change because Dr Abdullah or Ashraf Ghani will not waste time in correcting anti Pakistan feelings of Afghanis. The chosen president will surely work for stronger ties with India. The war is still ongoing: Once a war on terror begins it never ends. Whether there is a treaty with Taliban is not clear. However, non-intervention is affordable medicine because that keeps everyone safer by not getting involved in foreign conflicts.”We never signed up to be the permanent security force in Afghanistan to fight against the Taliban,”
the official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told reporters. The United States now has about 32,000 troops in Afghanistan. U.S. military leaders had pushed for a force of at least around 10,000, saying it was the minimum required. Remaining U.S. and NATO forces will advise Afghan forces, focusing on functions such as budgeting, logistics, and support for security institutions. It’s claimed that the NATO countries have helped build Afghanistan’s military and other forces from scratch since 2001. The Afghan forces have progressed to independence level, yet they lack skills in intelligence collection and air power. Therefore, a small number of U.S. soldiers is expected to conduct counterterrorism operations against al Qaeda and other hardline militants, located mainly in remote areas along Afghanistan’s eastern border with Pakistan. (Re: presence in Afghanistan by 2016 by Steve Holland Washington Tue May 27, 2014 6:28pm EDT). The partial withdrawal deadline nears, so does the need to regenerate “friendly environment” in the region. There is still a role for Islamabad; however, its ability to influence the outcome has been compromised a little due to the ongoing anti Pakistan propaganda. Nevertheless with passage of time, the Afghans would feel the reality of real love for them that actually stems from Pakistan. Certainly, Pakistanis and Afghanis are related and are sincerely in friendship in deed from the depth of their hearts. Pakistan can still be part of the solution; it can become a relevant and significant player provided it adjusts to the fast-changing situation in Afghanistan as well as in the region. There is strong belief that without Pakistan’s active involvement, Afghanistan will remain highly vulnerable politically, economically and militarily.

Strong Minds Accept No Graciously by Anne Brown “What we fear doing most is usually what we most need to do.” Tim FerrissHow did we become a society that cannot hear the word No? Why are we so sensitive to being told No? There is yes and there is No, there is night and day, dark and light, yin and yang, and on and on. So to be balanced and have strong minds we need to accept No in the same way we accept yes. No simply means I cannot do what you ask. It does not mean I reject you. It does not mean I don’t like you. It does not mean I will always say No to you. Can you get me a glass of water? No I can’t, thank you for asking me. Please ask me again in the future. I cannot do as you ask. Period. When we attach all this “stuff” to the word No such as: you don’t like me, you are rejecting me, you are not allowed to say No to me, I am causing conflict if I say No and on and on that is our problem. No simply means, I can’t do as you ask. People tell me they don’t say No because they don’t want to hear No. Now that is a great way to go through life handicapped. When I was training for my Black belt, I had a great teacher who had us spar using just hands, or just our legs, or just our voices. While that is a great training exercise, it isn’t a great way to operate all the time. My assessment, that is what you are doing to yourself if you say I don’t say No because I don’t want to hear the word No. Now that means you have to say yes to everything. That sounds like a big burden to me! It is so important to teach our children to be able to handle the response of yes and/or No. At this time I can’t do as you ask. When your child becomes frustrated and/or disappointed, you, as a parent must deal with those
Did You Thank Allah for Your Eyesight? emotions. If you as a parent think the child is being rejected, you won’t be able to help your child. This is the way the world works. Sometimes the world works easily so we can get those lessons and sometimes it challenges us so we can get those lessons. The world may say yes to you and the world may say No to you at different times. We must learn to grow from the feedback we are given without a major emotional breakdown. Strong minds can say No and they can receive No graciously. Do you want to have a strong mind or a weak mind? Find a friend and do this exercise together. First one of you will make simple requests of the other and the other will say No, Thank you for asking. Notice your body and its reactions. Then switch so you both learn to say No graciously and then hear No graciously. Speak about what you felt in your body once you said No and then once you were on the receiving end of No. Do this over and over and over until your body doesn’t have any reactions to saying No or receiving No. Start with simple requests, may I have a glass of water, and move into the more challenging areas such as dating, sex, money or whatever is “hot” for you. “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” Lao Tzu Source:http://www.selfgrowth.com
A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: “I am blind, please help.” There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words. Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, “Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?”
The man said, “I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way.” What he had written was: “Today is a beautiful day and I cannot see it.” Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing? Of course both signs told people the boywas blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective? It is He, Who has created for you (the sense of) hearing (ears), sight (eyes), and hearts (understanding). Little thanks you give.” [surah Al-Mu’minun; 78]

Beat the heat with baby
By: Kari Heron Summer isn’t the most child-friendly season — with soaring temperatures and tempers, you can keep your cool by helping your child eat and drink right I cannot believe it is already June. How on earth did we get to the middle of the year? Wasn’t it just a short while ago that we sang Auld Lang Syne and welcomed 2014? Time only flies when you are having fun, so I guess we must be having a ball. Speaking of flying, it seems to me that summer approaches rather quickly this year. It’s already too hot for my own comfort and I am busy trying to finalise travel plans to be out of the summer heat for as long as time allows. I tend to avoid the outdoors like a plague in the hottest months of the year, and this is my baby’s first summer and he is used to lots of outdoor living. Herein enters the dilemma. When I do have to take him on the road during the daytime, there are a few things I try to have to ensure that we are both protected from the overwhelming swelter. This is important for me as a breastfeeding mom who gets really worn down in the heat, and him as an infant who should not be exposed to high temperatures and direct sunlight for extended periods. Hydrate before leaving home I drink a lot of water generally but I really get guzzling prior to heading outside, as it helps me to combat the intense heat you face out-
doors. As a result, I don’t end up feeling so parched the moment the heat hits my face and wafts through my nostrils. Keep ice in freezer I always have a bag of ice from the supermarket or gas station in my freezer. This means I can drink my water a little (or a lot) colder than in the cooler months, as this is the only way to really relieve the parched feeling during the hot summer days, whether I am outdoors in the heat or inside seeking solace in the air conditioning. Remember, air conditioning is deceptively dehydrating, so you should still chug down nature’s superbly thirst quenching crystal punch when indoors. Add veggies, fruit and lots of ice to the water bottle Cucumbers, lemon, oranges and berries make lovely infused waters. Keep in a pitcher and
offer with glasses of ice to guests upon arrival at your home, or add lots of ice to take along with you on the road in a huge recyclable BPA free water bottle. Snack on hydrating foods Avoid very salty and sugary snacks, and go for crudités with fresh veggies like cucumbers, carrots and celery, as they are very hydrating. You can have with hummus, baba ghanoush, mutabel or whatever dip you like. Carry fruits like watermelon, cantaloupe, melon, pineapple and grapes as well, for a sweet alternative. These can also be kept in the cooler box/bag. Yoghurt is also a great idea. The coconut yogh-urt by Dubai-based Coco Yogo is dairy free and suitable for raw and vegan diets. The flavoured Coco Yogo comp-otes are sweetened with agave syrups and provide a sensationally delicious alternative for kids, while the plain one is often given to some ba-
bies already on solids. Get an insulated cooler box or bag For any trip over any distance — long or short — during the hottest part of the day, if you are carrying a baby or toddler, I strongly suggest you keep a cooler in the trunk and stock it with a bag of ice from the gas station before heading out on your trip. Keep bottles of water and fresh juices in cooler as well, but more water than juices, and much more than you think you will need. A friend of mine found herself stuck in the middle of Sheikh Zayed road during a hot summer day with her toddler due to unforeseen car troubles; her engine would not start, so she could not use the air conditioning. This could happen anywhere or anytime. Keep a blanket and umbrella beside the cooler as well. Avoid caffeinated drinks and foods This is not the time to drink a can of Coke, Pepsi or have a cup of coffee. Instead of that iced coffee or caffeine-laced energy drink, opt for freshly made fruit juices for added taste. Get a smaller insulated bag While you have a big cooler box/bag that stays inside the car, a smaller lunch-size bag makes it practical to carry perishables, water and juices for baby and yourself. Get one that suits your style, from Tavola, Lakeland or Spinneys.

The financial crisis has been linked to a 4.5 per cent increase in Canada’s suicide rate, according to a study that estimates at least 10,000 extra suicides could be connected to economic hardship in EU countries and North America. Researchers compared suicide data from the World Health Organization before and after the onset of the recession in 2007. “A crucial question for policy and psychiatric practice is whether these suicide rises are inevitable,” Aaron Reeves of Oxford University’s sociology department and his co-authors said in Wednesday’s issue of the British Journal of Psychiatry. Given that the rise in suicides exceeded what would be expected and the large variations in suicide rates across countries, the researchers suspect some of the suicides were “potentially avoidable.” In Canada, the suicides rose by 4.5 per cent or about 240 suicides more than expected between 2007 and 2010. In the U.S.A, the rate increased by 4.8 per cent over the same period. Before 2007 in Europe, suicide rates had been falling, but the trend reversed, rising by 6.5 per cent by 2009 and staying elevated through 2011. Two countries, Sweden and Finland, bucked the trend in the early 1990s. Job loss, home repossession and debt are the
main risk factors leading to suicide during economic downturns, previous studies suggest. Reeves said three factors may help buffer economic shocks that could lead to suicide: • Effective treatment for clinical depression. • Return to work programs. • Greater gender equality in the workplace — rates rose for both and women, but the increases were about four times greater among men. In highly masculine environments, where male identity is bound up with work, job loss could pose more of a threat to status. “Suicides are just the tip of the iceberg. These data reveal a looming mental health crisis in Europe and North America. In these hard economic times, this research suggests it is critical to look for ways of protecting those who are likely to be hardest hit,” study co-author Prof. David Stuckler of Oxford said in a release. As mental health services retrench, the researchers urged psychiatrists to speak up about how macro-economic policies affect the health of their patients and advocate for prevention.”Recessions will continue to hurt, but need not cause selfharm,” they concluded. Vancouver has the bank to back a new NBA franchise: Report
The NBA’s Toronto Raptors are coming to Vancouver for part of their training camp this fall and will play an exhibition game at Rogers Arena Oct. 5, but when might a Vancouver-based franchise return to the city? Notwithstanding any plans the league has to come back, Metro Vancouver is in a better position now to host an NBA basketball franchise and would be an increasingly attractive market over the next 20 years, according to a report from the Conference Board of Canada released Monday. Raptors Coach Dwane Casey revealed on the TSN show Off The Record that the organization will come to Vancouver in the fall, and the team announced Monday that its visit will include a preseason game — the second one here since 2010 — keeping the hopes of local fans alive. The
Raptors will play Sacramento Kings at Rogers Arena, with tickets going on sale on sale Saturday. The Raptors will also visit Montreal in the pre-season. Stoking the hopes of fans even further, report co-authors economists Glen Hodgson and Mario Lefebvre, said in the report that the city’s economic landscape has changed. “With Vancouver’s steady rise in population, high income levels and a strong corporate presence, the NBA could return one day, especially if the Canadian dollar remains strong,” the authors wrote. Metro Vancouver’s population is on its way to hit 3.5 million by 2035, according to estimates, and with the expectation it will attract more potentially team-sponsoring corporate headquarters, the city would have a good base for a new NBA team. “The major
challenge will be to find committed ownership and astute management,” the report said. And it would have to coincide with a time when the league is prepared to entertain expansion, which doesn’t appear to be imminent. Newly installed NBA commissioner Adam Silver recently told the U.S. sports network ESPN that the league is not in a position to grant Seattle an expansion franchise to satiate the appetites of a local group that was blocked from buying the Sacramento Kings. “We’re not planning on expanding right now, so it’s not a function of price,” Silver told ESPN in April. Hodgson and Lefebvre believe Vancouver could economically support an NBA team within the next 20 years, but not a Major League Baseball team. The city still wouldn’t be a big enough market
for big-league baseball, they say, although the authors believe Montreal could witness a return of big-league baseball by 2035. Hodgson and Lefebvre’s 188-page report, Power Play: The Business Economics of Pro Sports, examines the economic conditions the cities that host major pro-sports leagues, the operating conditions of leagues and addresses the hot topic of who should pay for new pro sports facilities. Pro sports are big business, the authors conclude, generating $1.5 billion per year in revenue. Hodgson is Senior Vice President and Chief Economist at The Conference Board of Canada, while Lefebvre is formerly of The Conference Board of Canada, and is the new President & CEO at L’Institut de développement urbain du Québec. World Cup financial gains rarely materialize for host
Although some countries and cities have managed to profit from well-run major sports events such as the FIFA World Cup and the Olympics, they’re far from the norm, a prominent professor of economics says. Victor Matheson, a professor of economics at the College of the Holy Cross in Newton, Mass., says prospective hosts need to think twice about whether the massive outlays of cash are worth it in the long run. “The economic benefit is typically zero,” Matheson says in an interview set to air on CBC’s Lang & O’Leary Exchange on Tuesday. And even when there is a modest gain, “it’s not enough to justify the price tag,” he says. The World Cup starts on Thursday, but the run-up to kickoff has been dominated by talk of a crippling transit strike threatening to bring traffic to a halt as the world descends on Brazil, amid stories ofheavy-handed crackdowns on protesters. FIFA itself has been mired in allegations of bid-rigging and bribery over which cities get to host the World Cup. Major sports events are often trumpeted as having economic benefits down the line that will more than cover the sticker price of hosting the games themselves, but as the costs escalate into the stratosphere, fewer and fewer cities are
willing to pony up. Host cities consider the case of Sochi, Russia, which shattered the record (held by Beijing in 2008) for the most expensive Olympics ever, with costs a reported $51 billion for the Winter Games this past February. Because the IOC and FIFA make their money from selling TV and merchandising rights, they have no incentive to keep costs from ballooning, Matheson says. “On paper, the IOC and FIFA don’t care whether it costs $51 billion to host the Olympics in Sochi or $14 billion to host the World Cup in Brazil, because ‘I’m not paying those costs,’” Matheson says. FIFA has been excoriated for giving the 2022 World Cup to the desert nation of Qatar — a sun-parched patch of Middle Eastern sand where the daytime temperature in the summer sometimes eclipses 40 C, and where eight gigantic soccer stadiums capable of hosting upward of 50,000 people will need to be built. All that, in an area roughly twice the size of P.E.I. Brazil’s facilities for games starting this week are rumoured to be not yet completed. And even those that are — such as the $318-million stadium being built in Manaus, an Amazonian city 4,000 kilometres from Rio that can’t be reached by
road — are already being described as white elephants before they’ve hosted a game. Those venues may follow in the ignoble footsteps of Sarajevo’s now-decrepit venues from 1984, or Greece’s abandoned softball stadium built in 2006, or Beijing’s rarely used Water Cube that hosted swimming events in 2008. “Specialized sports infrastructure like bobsled runs and soccer stadiums, there’s very little evidence you get any sort of economic benefits from these things,” Matheson says. In the modern Olympic era, Matheson says, host cities that turn a profit are the exception, not the rule. Montreal’s 1976 Olympics, for example, famously landed the city a debt of $1.5 billion that it only managed to pay off 30 years later, in 2006. On the flip side, the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles set the bar for a profitable Games, mainly because there were no other bidding cities willing to enter the hot political climate (the Soviet Union was refusing to attend those Games) and most of the facilities were already built. The L.A. Games were the example the IOC was always able to hold up to prospective bidders, Matheson says. Matheson singles out some recent major sports events for leaving behind a
genuine positive economic legacy. The 1994 World Cup in the U.S. was a financial windfall, mainly because most of the venues were already built. And the newfound fan interest and added money led directly to the creation of Major League Soccer in America, which is now successful and financially viable. Similarly, the Spanish city of Barcelona likely benefited from hosting the Games, as it became a more popular tourist destination internationally afterward. “If you’ve got a city that’s a hidden gem and you spend a bunch of money advertising yourself and then you offer something the world doesn’t know about, it can work,” he says, noting that Barcelona is now the fourth-biggest destination for tourists in all of Europe — something it wasn’t before, Matheson said. Spending on such events has escalated so rapidly that the only willing bidders end up being deep-pocketed governments in places where the locals can’t really oppose the leader’s plans — such as the 2022 Olympics, where the only two willing bidders are China and Kazakhstan, or the 2022 World Cup, which was controversially awarded to Qatar. “Once you see people voting with their dollars, maybe the IOC and FIFA have some real incentive to reform the bidding process,” he says.
