AML, PML-Q and PAT to form grand alliance
Pakistan Muslim League – Quaid (PML-Q), Awami Muslim League (AML) and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) have announced to form a grand alliance against the government. Leaders from the three parties gathered in Lahore on Wednesday to chalk out a strategy on inviting other political and religious parties to join their alliance as reported by Express Tribune. PML-Q leaders Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Chaudhry Pervez Elahi and AML leader Sheikh Rasheed met PAT chief Dr Tahirul Qadri at his residence in Model Town. Government’s attempt to foil their welcome reception, the GT road march and Qadri’s gathering at The Mall previously scheduled for Tuesday night were discussed. This was the Chaudhry brothers second meeting with Qadri in the last 24 hours. Sources said that they reviewed their strategy and urged Qadri to prepare his workers for a long struggle after Ramzan. Qadri was planning to postpone his visit to Pakistan due to operation Zarb-e-Azb, but the Model Town clashes between his supporters and the police forced him to expedite his return.Shiekh Rashid and the Chaudhry brothers intend to invite Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan to join their alliance against the government.Talking to the media after the meeting, the leaders said that they were reaching out to religious and political parties to form a grand alliance. They reiterated that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif should resign over the Model Town debacle. They
said that on Thursday, an important meeting will be held to further consultations and contacts with political and religious parties regardless of whether they agree with their 10 points or not. The leaders claimed that 1,600 PAT workers were arrested and houses of their leaders and workers were being raided constantly. They further claimed that of those injured during the Model Town clashes, at least one victim was being killed daily.
Zarb-i-Azb: 12 suspected militants surrender, 13 killed
At least 13 suspected militants were killed and five hideouts were destroyed in fresh strikes carried out by Pakistan’s military jet fighters on Wednesday, according to a statement issued by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) as reported by Dawn. The statement added that 12 suspected militants surrendered to security forces in North Waziristan tribal region. Chief of Army Staff, General Raheel Sharif visited the newly set up premier helicopter overhauling facility at Aviation Base Workshop today and witnessed the first batch of overhauled helicopters.Addressing on the occasion, Chief of Army staff, congratulated engineers and technicians of Aviation Base Workshop for having developed the first ever inland helicopter overhauling capability in collaboration with Saint Petersburg Aviation Repair Company (SPARC).
quested the court to immediately implement its decision instead of waiting for 15 days for the government to challenge the decision. The petition had contended that Musharraf should be allowed to travel abroad to meet his ailing mother. Earlier on Monday, the Supreme Court had suspended the SHC order till it decided the government’s appeal against removing Musharraf’s name from the ECL. It said that the federal government could not take the risk of allowing the former president to leave the country because there was a great incentive for him to flee in view of a treason case that involved the death penalty.
Pakistan rejects allegation of its army’s ‘presence’ in Afghanistan
Pakistan on Tuesday rejected allegations as baseless by Afghan officials regarding Pakistan Army troops in civilian clothes conducting attacks in Kunar province of Afghanistan, a statement issued by the Foreign Office said.“We reject these baseless allegations, reported by Daily Times. The fact is that the Pakistan armed forces have been attacked repeatedly by terrorists operating from the Afghan territory,” the official statement said. “Our armed forces have acted only in self defence with maximum restraint and responsibility,” it said. The spokesperson also said that Pakistan expects that the Afghan government to re-

SHC rejects Musharraf’s review petition
The Sindh High Court on Wednesday rejected a petition filed by former military ruler Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf seeking a review of the court’s earlier decision to remove Musharraf’s name from the exit control list (ECL) after 15 days, DawnNews reported. On June 12, the SHC had struck down the federal government’s order of preventing Musharraf from leaving the country, but said the former military ruler would have to wait for two weeks to find out if he could actually travel abroad as the court also suspended the operation of its judgment for 15 days, which enabled the federation to file an appeal in the Supreme Court. The review petition filed by the counsel of the former military strongman had re-

We believe the unfounded allegations from the Afghan side not only vitiate the environment but also serve to undermine the efforts for constructive engagement between the two countries.” The Foreign Office said that Pakistan would neither be deterred from addressing the challenges at hand, nor from building a friendly and cooperative relationship with the people of Afghanistan.

Deadly attack on Muslims in Sri Lanka
At least three people have been killed and 52 injured after Buddhist mobs rampaged through Muslim areas in southwest Sri Lanka, police say, reported by CNN.. The outbreak of religious violence followed a large rally Sunday by the Bodu Bala Sena, a hardline Buddhist nationalist group led by monks, in the town of Aluthgama, about 60 kilometers south of Colombo. The rally was prompted by the alleged assault of a monk by Muslim youths days earlier, police said. After the rally, violence erupted on both sides as the demonstrators marched through Muslim neighborhoods, allegedly chanting anti-Muslim slogans, according to a statement by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay. Muslim homes and shops were gutted in the violence, which has prompted Muslims in the region to gather in mosques for safety. Sri Lankan police spokesman Ajith Rohana told CNN that 12 people from Sri Lanka’s Sinhalese majority had been arrested over the violence, some of them members of Bodu Bala Sena. “They have been remanded at the moment and we’re framing charges in due course,” he said. Soldiers had been brought in to enforce a curfew, banning people from the roads or from gathering in public places, in the hope of preventing further clashes in Aluthgama and
the nearby town of Beruwala, coastal destinations popular with foreign tourists. The curfew was relaxed from 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday to allow people to leave their homes to gather supplies. Rohana said that “sporadic incidents” had been reported Monday night, but that authorities had the situation under control. The violence has alarmed international observers, with the U.N.’s Pillay urging Sri Lanka’s government to “urgently do everything it can to arrest this violence, curb the incitement and hate speech which is driving it, and protect all religious minorities.” “I am very concerned this violence could spread to Muslim communities in other parts of the country,” she said. Sri Lanka’s Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem, a Muslim, said his party would weigh its future in the government depending on the official response to the attacks. “I am ashamed I could not help my people,” he said. Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is in Bolivia for the G77 summit, commented on the clashes on Twitter. “The Government will not allow anyone to take the law into their own hands. I urge all parties concerned to act in restraint,” he wrote. “An investigation will be held for law to take its course of action to bring to book those responsible for incidents in Aluthgama.”
The last of Syria’s declared chemical weapons have been shipped from the country and are en route for destruction at sea, according to the world’s chemical-weapons watchdog. A Danish ship is now to take the chemicals for transhipment in Italy’s port of Gioia Tauro to the US ship Cape Ray for destruction at sea, while some chemicals are to be destroyed at sites including in the US and Britain. “As we speak, the ship [carrying the last chemicals] has just left the port,” Ahmet Uzumcu, head of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), said in The Hague on Monday. “Removing the stockpile of precursor and other chemicals has been a fundamental condition in the programme to eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons programme. “While a major chapter in our endeavours closes today, OPCW’s work in Syria will continue.” The Syrian Foreign Ministry confirmed on Monday that “the final cargo of chemical agents has today been taken outside Syrian territory”. Syria had previously shipped out 92 percent of its stockpile of chemical weapons under the terms of a UN-backed and US-Russia-brokered agreement last year. But the remaining eight percent of the stockpile remained at one site and Syria said it was unable to transport it to the port of Latakia because of security concerns. In his remarks on Monday, Uzumcu described the disarmament mission as “a major undertaking marked by an extraordinary international cooperation.
“Never before has an entire arsenal of a category of weapons of mass destruction been removed from a country experiencing a state of internal armed conflict”. Sigrid Kaag, the Dutch head of the joint OPCW-UN mission, also lauded the end of what she called “the most operationally challenging task within the effort to eliminate the Syrian chemical weapons programme”. Referring to an investigation into alleged use of chlorine in Syria’s conflict, Uzumcu said it will resume but “may take a little more time”. Last week, an OPCW investigation team said chlorine, which Syria was not obliged to hand over, has recently been used in Syria “in a systematic manner”. Assad’s government and rebels have both accused the other of using chemical agents in the bloody uprising that began in March 2011. Syria did not have to declare its stockpile of chlorine - a weak toxic agent that can be considered a chemical weapon if used offensively - as part of the disarmament deal as it is widely used for commercial and domestic purposes. Under last year’s agreement Syria had until the end of June for the destruction of its chemical weapons, but it has been widely acknowledged that the deadline would not be met. The deal was reached after a sarin nerve gas attack in a rebel-held Damascus suburb killed around 1,400 people. Syria agreed to hand over its chemical arsenal after the US threatened air strikes. Bangladesh court set to rule on Jamaat leader
Bangladesh’s war crimes court is set to deliver a verdict against the leader of the country’s largest Islamist party, who could face the death penalty for his alleged crimes during the 1971 independence struggle. Motiur Rahman Nizami, 71, faces 16 charges ranging from mass killing to rape, arson and genocide, relating to violence committed by one of the most notorious militias during the war. A death sentence could trigger violent protests in the country as Nizami’s Jamaate-Islami party has a strong grassroots base with hundreds of thousands of activists and supporters. Similar verdicts including the execution of a senior Jamaat leader last year saw massive unrest nationwide as Islamists fought with security forces in towns and cities, leaving around 200 people dead. Nizami, the president of Jamaat-e-Islami, pleaded not guilty and accuses the country’s secular government of using the special war crimes court to target opposition leaders. Prosecutors say Nizami was one of the chief architects of the mass killings of Bengalis in the 1971 independence war which saw Bangladesh emerge from what was then called East Pakistan. The
government says three million people died in the war. Independent researchers put the estimate between 300,000 and 500,000. “He established the Al-Badr forces during the war to support the Pakistani army,” prosecutor Mohammad Ali told AFP ahead of the verdict and the sentencing, which he said would come on Tuesday. As head of Al Badr, he was involved “in committing crimes against humanity such as genocide, murder, rape and arson” as well as the murder of the country’s top intellectuals, Ali said. Nizami, a minister in the Islamist-allied government between 2001-06 is already on death row after being sentenced to death in January for trafficking weapons and trying to ship them to a rebel group in northeast India. Rights groups have criticised the war crimes court, saying it falls short of international standards. The latest verdict would be the first since Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina won general elections in January, which were marred by widespread fraud and a boycott by all opposition parties. Jamaat could not take part in the election after it was banned from contesting polls. Source: Al-Jazeera
US promises Iraq ‘intense’ support in combat
John Kerry has said that US support for Iraqi security forces will be “intense and sustained” to help them combat an armed uprising that has swept through the country’s north and west. The US secretary of state was speaking in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, where he is meeting the country’s leaders and urging Nouri al-Maliki’s Shia-led government to give more power to political opponents before the Sunni fighters seize more control across the country. “It is a moment of decision for Iraq’s leaders,” Kerry said on Monday. “Iraq faces an existential threat and Iraq’s leaders have to meet that threat.” Kerry said that during Monday’s talks, Maliki reaffirmed his commitment to a July 1 date for forming a new government. On Sunday Kerry said that the US would not pick or choose who rules Iraq. He said, however, the US had noted the dissatisfaction among Kurds, Sunnis and some Shia with Maliki’s leadership and emphasised that the US wanted Iraqis to “find a leadership that was prepared to be inclusive and share power”. The US govern-
ment has ruled out sending ground troops to aid the Iraqi government against its fight with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) - an al-Qaeda breakaway group - and its Sunni allies, but has kept an option open to use air power. It has moved a carrier strike group and troops transports into the Arabian Gulf area. The visit came as Sunni armed groups led by ISIL fighters have expanded their offensive in Iraq, capturing more territory from the government. ISIL was reported on Sunday to have taken the towns of Qaim, Rawah and Anah in Anbar province. Qaim, located on the border with Syria, hosts a key crossing between the two countries. Fighters also claim to be in full control of the northern city of Baiji, which hosts Iraq’s biggest oil refinery, though the military denies that the group controls the refinery itself. The Associated Press news agency, citing Iraqi military officials, reported that Sunni fighters captured two border crossings, the Turaibil crossing with Jordan and the al-Walid crossing with Syria, on Sunday. 5 I N T E R N A T I O N A L Hundreds of Palestinians Thousands of B.C. held in two weeks students will not get report cards Shabaan 27, 1435 June 27, 2014
Hundreds of Palestinians arrested in the occupied West Bank over the past two weeks will be held in “administrative detention”, nearly doubling the number of prisoners held indefinitely in Israeli jails. These detainees are among more than 400 arrested in the Israeli army’s largest operation in the West Bank since the second Palestinian intifada (uprising). Thousands of troops have been deployed since three young Israeli settlers disappeared on June 12 while hitchhiking home from their religious school in Kfar Etzion, an illegal settlement near Hebron. Addameer, a prisoners’ rights group, said on Monday that more than 100 administrative detention warrants have already been approved by a military judge. “We expect that number to rise quite significantly in the coming days,” said Gavan Kelly, a member of the advocacy unit at Addameer. “A majority were accused of being members of Hamas, and a minority from Islamic Jihad.” Ha’aretz, which first reported the story on Sunday night, said that some 200 Palestinians could eventually be classified as administrative detainees, a tool Israel uses to hold prisoners without charge or trial. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has blamed Hamas for the alleged kidnappings, and the army says most of the detainees are members of the group. The resort to administrative detention, however, suggests that Israel has little hard evidence tying them to the incident, or to any other crimes. The defence ministry and the prime minister’s office both declined to comment on the detainees. The use of administrative detention will heighten an already tense situation in Israeli
prisons, where scores of Palestinian prisoners have joined a hunger strike against their indefinite detentions. The longest-striking member, Ayman Tbeish, has not eaten in nearly 120 days. Their protest prompted the Israeli government to rush forward a bill allowing the prison service to force-feed detainees. It passed a first reading on June 9, and was set for a final vote on Monday, but was delayed because of last-minute objections from the centrist Yesh Atid party. The Knesset is now expected to vote next week. More than 1,000 Israeli medical workers have signed a petition against the bill. It was organised by Physicians for Human Rights, a local NGO, which has denounced the law as unethical. Members of Yesh Atid have also spoken out against the law, with one saying it was tantamount to legalising torture. A staffer for one of the groups campaigning against the bill said on Sunday, however, that she “wasn’t sure” whether the party would demand substantive changes or merely settle for another week of debate. Hunger strikes have been an effective tactic for Palestinian prisoners: A lengthy hunger strike in 2012, led by Samer Issawi, who fasted for eight months, prompted Israel to agree to limit the use of administrative detention. But the government reneged on that promise, rights groups say, prompting the current protest. On Monday the Israeli army went a step further: It rearrested Issawi, according to the Palestinian Prisoners Club, a Ramallah-based advocacy group. Source: Al-Jazeera

Thousands of B.C. students will not be getting report cards this year and provincial exams are being modified to make them easier to mark as teachers begin the second week of their full strike. Report cards have not been deemed an essential service, so teachers will not be required to complete them. Provincial exams were declared as essential, with teachers required to invigilate, but not mark, the Grade 10 and 11 provincials. Scores will be adjusted accordingly, the letter says. As far as final marks are concerned, the Labour Relations Board ruled Friday that the most recent Grade 10 and 11 marks would be reviewed by the classroom teachers, who must report any changes to the district. In effect, this means that Grade 10 and 11 marks would stand as of the last date that marks were entered into the computer reporting system, unless the teacher makes an adjustment. Whether or how those grades will be communicated to parents remains up in the air, but the superintendent of schools in Surrey, B.C.’s largest district, said in a letter that report cards are not possible under a full strike. Report cards have also been cancelled for elementary and middle school students in New Westminster and Vancouver. Parents of Vancouver elementary students should assume their child will progress to the next grade unless they have been informed otherwise, a letter from VSB superintendent of schools Steve Cardwell says. Partial report cards will be issued to students in Grade 8 through 12, the letter says. The other major pressing concern in Vancouver is the need to make a decision to go ahead or cancel summer school, school board chairwoman Patti Bacchus said. The Vancouver school board will need to decide on the fate of summer school by Wednesday or Thursday of this week, Bacchus said. Tinney’s letter says a decision on summer school in Surrey will also be made this week. “If teachers are on strike and picket lines are up, there will be no summer school,” Tinney’s letter says. “We are all prepared and ready to go, but at this point, summer school is looking very tenuous. Some districts have already cancelled summer school. We will wait as
late as possible to make that call.” Although the letter says some districts have already cancelled summer school, the Ministry of Education has not heard of any districts that have cancelled. With no end in sight to the labour dispute, the teachers tried Monday to find another mediator, after their first choice Vince Ready, said he was “too busy” and passed on the job on Sunday. B.C.’s teachers launched their province wide strike last week, after 16 months of failed negotiations. The two sides are within one per cent on their wage offers (the government is offering seven per cent over six years, the BCTF wants eight per cent over five years). The BCTF wants a $5,000 per teacher signing bonus and the government is offering $1,200. The BCTF also wants a $225 million annual fund to hire new teachers and deal with class size and composition issues, after winning a B.C. Supreme Court case earlier this year that said the government had illegally stripped the right to bargain class size and composition issues from the teachers’ contract in 2002. The BCTF also wants a $225 million fund to deal with retroactive grievances by members, as well as to pay for improved medical benefits, professional development and preparation time. The government is offering to continue a $75 million Learning Improvement Fund, and says it can’t afford the BCTF’s terms. Bacchus said the VSB, which has 10 per cent of the province’s students, has calculated that it would cost $60 million a year to restore the services in place in schools before 2002. A one per cent increase in total teacher compensation (salary and benefits) costs approximately $30 million per year, the ministry of education says. In the strike so far, the employer has saved $122.4 million, $48 million due to four stage one closure days, $60 million due to five full strike days and $14.4 million due to the 10-per-cent pay cut that was in place during the lockout. If schools remain closed through the end of June, the total savings will be more than $168 million, the Ministry of Education said. Source: Vancouver Sun
Thousands of people attended the funeral of Nahid Almanea, the Saudi female student who was murdered in Colchester last Tuesday. Almanea, a 31-year-old student at the University of Essex, was found fatally injured on a path near Avon Way on Tuesday. She had been stabbed 16 times in broad daylight and died at the scene from injuries to her head and body. A 19-year-old man from Colchester was arrested on Friday afternoon over the death and questioned about an attack on a woman jogging nearby. Essex Police said he would face no further action in relation to either case. Another man, aged 52, who was initially arrested in connection with the death has also been “positively eliminated” from inquiries, the media said. CCTV footage showing Almanea’s last movements as she headed for the footpath
on Tuesday morning has been released along with a map of her likely route from her home in nearby Woodrow Way, where she lived with her brother, to the Salary Brook trail, and a photograph of the bag she was carrying. Police have called for calm in the wake of the stabbing as the possibility that she was targeted because of her traditional Saudi dress provoked fears of revenge attacks. Almanea was wearing a hijab and a full-length navy blue robe, called an abaya, when she was knifed to death. She arrived in Britain several months ago with her younger brother to study for her PhD in life sciences at the university.More than 200 Saudi nationals study at the University of Essex, according to students. Happy Birthday O’ Canada
As Canada becomes 1477 YEARS OLD on July 1st 2014, the excited Canadians tend to be merry making indoors or outdoors. As usual, Canada Day Parade and fireworks display is ready to offer fun and enjoyment. Since ‘Canada Day’ is a federal statutory holiday, it’s celebrated throughout Canada with full fervour in recognition of the “July 1, 1867 enactment” of the British North Americas Act (BNA), also called “The Constitution Act, 1867.” Historically speaking, the Canadian founders of confederation were the representatives of the British North America colonies who attended the three major conferences on Canadian confederation. Sir John A. Macdonald became the first Prime Minister of Canada on that day. Not only was he the ‘father of confederation,’ but he also drafted twothirds of the provisions of the BNA creating the ‘Dominion of Canada.’ As a result, Canada became a selfgoverning dominion of Great Britain. The four provinces were created from the former British colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario. Currently, Canada consists of ten provinces and three territories. This Canadian national holiday was enacted in 1879 under the name “Dominion Day.” In fact, the formation of the union of provinces under a new country is the basis of Canada’s July 1 celebration each year. However, the ‘Dominion Day’ changed into ‘Canada Day’ on October 27, 1982. The official lyrics “O Canada” were finalized in 1968 by a special joint committee of the Senate and House of Commons. This day also marks the anniversary of the officially proclaimed “O Canada” as national anthem. The Royal anthem plays ‘God Save The Queen’ at some fes-
tive locations celebrating Canada Day. More exciting is the fact that Ottawa always welcomes Canadians from all across Canada who go to the national Capital to enjoy the specifically tailored festivities. This year again, thousands of Canadians are expected to congregate on the Parliament Hill to mark their country’s birthday. In the morning between 9:00-10:30 o’clock, the visitors will be able to attend the Peace Tower carillon concert, the traditional flag-raising ceremony and the changing of the guard ceremony. From Noon to 1:30 PM is reserved for the Canada Day Noon Show which would be including a CF-18 fly-over, and performances from Brett Kissel, British Columbia Boys Choir, Marianas Trench, Nadja, Serena Ryde, Terry Kelly, Véronic DiCaire. Parliament Hill Afternoon Program: From 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., visitors can enjoy 1930s- and 1940s-style swing dancing, with its spirit of joy and exuberance Parliament Hill Evening Show will start at 7:30pm featuring Brett Kissel, Daniel Lavoie, Marianas Trench, Nadja, Serena Ryder, Véronic DiCaire, Whitehorse, DJ ARock and VJ Video Girl. Major’s Hill Park will host an exciting all day line-up featuring a variety of cultural performances; the inspirational stories of Canadian Olympic and Paralympics Athletes will be highlighted. At Jacques Cartier Park in Gatineau (10:00am10:45pm), a variety of activities for families, especially children aged 3 to 12 will be held. Also, the Canada Day fun includes games, physical activities, performances, inflatable slides, and special activities to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the 1864 Charlottetown and Québec Confer-

ences and Canada Day Fireworks would start at 10:00pm. The celebrations will be all over Canada; similarly, Surrey, BC has its own celebration features that include the World-class entertainment, great food, games and amusement rides, and indeed a spectacular fireworks finale. Listen-in on this year’s main stage to be presented by Chevron, for another stellar lineup. In addition, shooting star amusements will have a full range of family-oriented fun for the younger crowd, including amusements, interactive games and bouncy castles. Here, Canada Day will be held at the same venue as last year. The public may come to join at 10:00am- and stay till 10:15pm, when there will be the fireworks show. Some people would celebrate the special day by joining BBQ parties and enjoying the fireworks all over the country. Let’s not forget, the Multicultural Society has contributed significantly to keep Canada going with excellence. Last year, a spectacular Canada Day Celebration at Strathcona Park was successfully organized by the Muslim Coordinating Council (MCC-NCR) and the Indonesian Canadian Congress (ICC) followed by a positive feedback from so many Canadians of different ethnic and religious background. It was a lot of fun, especially for the children. Indeed, the event serves as a good bridge to facilitate Muslims to build ties with Canadians of other faiths. The international “mouth watering” food and dishes from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Eritrea, Somalia, Egypt, Yemen, Lebanon, Palestine, Iraq, and Turkey were available. Nevertheless, this year due to Ramadan starting 28th of June, the Muslim Canadians will have to adjust a little respecting the sacred month of

This is the first type of instance in the history of Pakistan where the former first citizen of the country is dragged into criminal prosecution in such a demeaning way. There is no refuting truth that whereas the majority of the politicians in the country, including those in authority, are hardheartedly filling in their treasuries by robbing the wealth of the nation in the broad daylight Pervez Musharraf always stood apart by translating into practice his slogan of Pakistan First. He always give prominence to his motherland and never endeavored to thrive himself at the cost of the people of Pakistan. His devotion and allegiance for Pakistan was beyond doubt and he was the first head of the State, who brought billions of dollars from the US administration and filled in the national exchequer of Pakistan, the money that was primarily used for the reinforcement the national defense. Although I am not an individual of Pakistani origin (On the contrary, I belong the cross-border country of India), but I have always admired the General for his exceptional qualities some of which have been stated in the preceding paragraph. In all my truthfulness, I feel no hesitancy to evaluate Pervez Musharraf only next to the founder of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Hence, the accusation of the misdemeanor of Treason against him is nothing short of the perpetration of the most heinous crime, which is not only atrocious allegation, but contrary to the well-established cannons of equity, justice and good conscience as well, which

Despite the insurmountable difficulty, a tolerance level among the members of multi-cultural society is a real blessing, as it has been playing a big role in promoting diversity in schools, work places, businesses and academic institutions. Of course, the credit goes to millions of motivated immigrants who kept building this nation to make Canada an attractive country to live peacefully. Constitutionally, the Canadian society enjoys equal rights, opportunities regardless of their ethnicity, race, creed or color. As said above, every year, tens of thousands of Canadians celebrate Canada Day in grand style in the nation’s capital flocking to Parliament Hill to join with the Governor General, the Prime Minister, and the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. Of course, the Canadians are entitled to celebrate their legacy, pride and opportunities. On the 147th Canada Day, the celebration in Surrey BC feature: world class entertainment, great food, games and amusement rides, and a spectacular fireworks finale. Plus, there will be a main stage presented by Chevron, for another stellar lineup. In addition, Shooting Star Amusements will have a full range of family-oriented fun for the younger crowd, including amusements, interactive games and bouncy castles - wow! Certainly, Canada Day unites all Canadians regardless of creed, culture or ethnicity; it help us understand the significance of the Canadian life.

is extremely deplorable. The second news relates to the forfeiture of the final attempt by the Catholic Church of the Christian fraternity of Malaysia to use the word ‘Allah’ (An Arabic term) to refer to God. The highest court of the country ruled in a legal dispute between the Christians and Muslims that the ban on the use of this word on the Christians is lawful and exclusively the followers of Islam can use this word. A seven Judge panel ruled that the lower court decision siding with the government stood and consequently, the application of the Christian community impugning the government decision was dismissed. It is positively a correct decision in my estimation for no community ought to be permitted to intermeddle into the religious affairs of the other community; otherwise, there would be a social chaos and breach of harmony all through the communities around. Either one should convert himself to Islam in any of its forms if anyone wants to use the term ‘Allah’ for God, which is peculiar in Islam only, or shun the use of this term altogether if one sticks to his/her own religion. The system of the belief of Islam nowhere shuts its doors for the entry of the non-Muslims into its fold. Anybody is free to adopt it as his/her way of belief, subject, however, to some fundamental conditions.

However, they do not fast for them nor has it ever been recorded that they fasted for them. Indeed it is clear that the fast of Islam is the fast of the Truth. Hafiz Al-Asqalani, quoting from Imam Al-Qurtubi, mentions the following Hadith: “The bankrupt person is he who shall come on the Day of Judgment with prayer, charity and fast, but he had also swore at another person, beat another, and consumed the wealth of another. Fasting is for Me and I reward it. (Fath Al-Bari, by Hafiz Al-Asqalani, Book of Fasting) It can be concluded that Allah Most High loves the fast of a Muslim, as it is a means for him to become more aware and fearful of Allah Most High. May Allah bless everyone with peace and happiness in this Ramadan
THE month of Ramadan is a month of grace and blessing. Upon arrival of this blessed month, Allah Most High causes His blessings and forgiveness to descend upon the one who gives this month its rights. Ramadan is the month in which Allah Most High showers His blessings upon our homes, and upon those who enter the mosques, especially the House of Allah — the Kaaba. During Ramadan, the mercy of Allah Most High falls upon us, like rain falling from the clouds. One can liken the virtue of Ramadan with charity, which is of two kinds. The first kind is where one gives charity to someone whom one meets along the street or on the path. The second kind is likened to one who visits another with the intention of giving charity. Ramadan is likened to the latter; where Allah Most High causes His blessings to descend upon the ummah of the blessed Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is during this time, that even little effort has the ability to earn high rewards, no matter where one is, be it in the sacred precinct in Makkah, or in one’s home. Allah Almighty is the creator of all things. He created the year, the month, the day and the hour. In the same way, Allah Most High has elevated the status of the Prophet (peace be upon him) over the whole of creation; and the status of the Kaaba over all the other places of worship, He has elevated and raised the month of Ramadan over all other months. This is entirely the will of Allah Most High, and a manifestation of His Omnipotent Power and Divine Will. Allah Most High chose to reveal His uncreated speech, the Qur’an, in this blessed month, to His final and most beloved Prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him). Allah Most High says in the Qur’an: “The month of Ramadan is the month in which the Qur’an was sent down, a guidance for the people, and clear verses of guidance and a criterion.” (Qur’an, 2:185) Imam Al-Tabari writes that Wathilah (may Allah bless him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The Scrolls of Abraham were revealed on the first night of the month of Ramadan, the Torah was revealed on the sixth of Ramadan, the Bible on the 13th, and the Qur’an was revealed on the 24th of Ramadan. He also writes that Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) said: Allah caused the Qur’an to descend to the heaven of this world, on Laylat Al-Qadr, and then when Allah wished to reveal anything from it, He revealed it. And that is what is meant by His Words: “Verily We have revealed the Qur’an in Laylat AlQadr” (Tafsir Al-Tabari, by Imam AlTabari, surat Al-Qadr) Allah Most High says in the Qur’an: “O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you as it has been prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain unto piety.” (Qur’an, 2:183) Imam Al-Tabari writes that Qatadah (Allah be pleased with him) said, in reference to this ayah: “The month of
Al-Qadr) Al Q d) Fasting during the month of Ramadan is obligatory and is done solely for Allah Most High. In a Hadith Qudsi, Allah says: “Every action of the son of Adam belongs to him except the fast. It is Mine, and I repay him for it.” (Muslim)There can be neither false pretension nor showing off on the part of the one who is fasting. If one is offering prayers, giving zakah, making pilgrimage or any other form of worship, others can see one’s worship but fasting is distinguished by the fact that only Allah Most High can see who is fasting and who is not. The polytheists may perform various acts of worship for their

F A I T H Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “Fasting is a shield (or a screen or a shelter). Preparing for the Month of Mercy By: Maryam Amirebrahimi A lot of us yearn to prepare for Ramadan, but we have no idea how to start. Below are a few tips to insha’Allah (Allah willing) help prepare our minds and hearts for this upcoming Month of Mercy. Make the Intention Simple to do, with a powerful impact. Maybe you want to prepare for Ramadan, but between school, work, family, and your other activities, you just have no idea how to fit in ‘prepare for Ramadan’ time. Instead of separating ‘prepare for Ramadan’ from your daily activities, make your daily activities a MEANS of preparation for Ramadan. For example, perhaps your mom asked you to pick up your brother from school on the day you finally had time to read a few extra pages of Qur’an. Instead of feeling upset as if you have lost a great opportunity to prepare for Ramadan, make the intention that you are picking up your brother to please Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala (exalted is He) and prepare for Ramadan by obeying your mother, helping your family members, building ties of kinship…and the list continues. The point is that preparing for Ramadan does not have to be some magnificent, enormous, extra-special thing that needs to be done at a certain time of the day. Many of your daily actions can be turned into Ramadan preparation actions with a sincere intention insha’Allah. Do these Easy-to-Reap-Reward Actions 1. Ask Allah to forgive your brothers and sisters. “Whoever seeks forgiveness for believing men and believing women, Allah will write for him a good deed for each believing man and believing woman.” [at-Tabarani, classed as hasan by al-Albani] 2. It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah radi allahu `anhu (may Allah be pleased with him) said “The Messenger of Allah [peace be upon him] said: ‘Whoever says subhan Allah wa bi hamdih (praise and glory be to Allah) 100 times, morning and evening, his sins will be erased even if they are like the foam on the sea.” [Bukhari, Muslim] 3. If a person says, “Subhan Allah (glory be to Allah),” 100 times, a thousand good deeds are recorded for him and a thousand bad deeds are wiped away. [Muslim 2073] 4. Remember Allah (swt) when you go shopping. “Whoever enters a market and says: “Laa ilaha illallah wahdahu la shareeka lah, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu yuhyi wa yumeetu wa huwa hayyun laa yamoot, bi yadihil khair, wa huwa ‘ala kulli shayin qadeer.” [There is nothing worthy of worship except Allah, alone without partner, to Him belongs dominion and praise; He causes life and death and He is the Living and does not die; in His Hand is all the good, and He is over all things competent] Allah will write for them a million good deeds and erase a million bad deeds and raise him a million levels.” [at-Tirmidhi, classed as hasan by alAlbani] Up Your Worship To help condition your heart for this blessed month, intensify your worship before Ramadan begins. Just a small, consistent amount is enough. The Prophet told us: “The deeds
most loved by Allah are those done regularly, even if they are small.” (Bukhari, Muslim) For example, say I always pray 2 rak`at (units )of sunnah (compulsory prayer) after ishaa’ (the night prayer) from this day until Ramadan begins—and even through Ramadan, let me make the intention that I will now pray 2 extra rak`at of sunnah after ishaa’. And every time I pray these extra 2 rak`at, which are more than what I normally pray, let me remember that I am doing these with the intention of asking Allah (swt) to help me be prepared to strive and exert my utmost effort during Ramadan. Make a Du`a’ (prayer) List Today This is THE MONTH to ask for EVERYTHING, both related to this life and the Next. Let us not wait until the last 10 nights to make special du`a’, and then once `Eid passes realize that we completely forgot about fifty other things we needed to make du`a’ for. Let’s start making our lists now, and add to it as more things come our way. Insha’Allah this should help us remember
to make constant du`a’ in this month where dua`a’ is accepted, and help our hearts pour out to the One Who can make those du`a’ happen, subhanahu wa ta’ala. Write out Your Objectives for Ramadan Praying all of your fard (obligatory) prayers? Praying all of your sunnahs? Reading the entire Qur’an? Giving $1 in charity a day? Making itikaaf (a time for reflection and prayer in seclusion) in the masjid? Leaving one serious sin that you’ve been trying to get away from for some time now? Sincerely turning back to Allah (swt)? Write out a list, put it somewhere you will see it, and make du`a’ for your success in fulfilling your objectives. Make a Plan! Look at your objectives and try to plan out how to realize them in this month. For example, perhaps you are really struggling to pray your sunnah prayers. In this month, realize the enormity of the ajr (reward) of praying the sunnah prayers. Think that perhaps these sunnah will be the deeds that will be heavy on your scale of good deeds when
you are intensely in need of them—on Yawm alQiyamah, the Day of Judgment. Therefore, fight to keep doing them all throughout Ramadan. If you can’t pray your 2 rak`at after dhuhr (the afternoon prayer) right away, make sure to do them as soon as you get the chance. Your plan might look something like this: Objective: Pray all of my fardh prayers. Method: Envision myself on the Day of Judgment seeing the weight of praying my sunnah consistently during this month. Make sure to pray sunnah immediately after salah (prayer). If I cannot, do it as soon as the opportunity arises—don’t let myself put it off! Another example is that of finishing the Qur’an: Objective: Finish the entire Qur’an in this month. Method: Read 4 pages of the Qur’an after every salah. 5 prayers X 4 pages = 20 pages. 20 pages= about 1 juz. 1 juz X 30= the entire Qur’an. So many Muslims have passed away since last month. So many people have not made it to Ramadan this year. Last year was their very last Ramadan. Will you make it to this Ramadan? Will this be your last Ramadan? Aim to strive this Ramadan. With a very small amount of effort, such as just making a small intention or adding a few extra acts of worship, we pray that Allah (swt) will help our hearts soften and honor us with making it easy to turn to Him and open up to Him. May Allah (swt) make us of the successful in Ramadan, and make it easy for us to turn to Him. Courtesy: SuhaibWebb

S P .
A Brief History of Canada From its northern Arctic islands to the majjestic ti mountains t i off the th Western W t Cordillera C dill and the windswept tip of Newfoundland, Canada encompasses an area of almost 4 million square miles (10 million square kilometers). It is the largest country in North America but its entire population of approximately 30 million is equivalent to that of California. Most people reside close to the US border and the vast expanse of remaining land forms one of the most extensive wilderness areas in the world. Geographically, Canada is divided into six distinct regions: the Atlantic provinces, the interior lowlands, the Canadian Shield, the great plains, the western mountains and the Arctic archipelago. The largest of these is the Canadian Shield covering almost 50% of Canada’s land mass. It forms a great arc around Hudson Bay and is roughly defined by the Atlantic, the St. Lawrence River, and the waterways that connect Lakes Huron, Superior, Winnipeg and Athabasca as well as the Great Slave and Great Bear Lakes. Although some highland areas exist, the Shield country consists mainly of low hills, countless lakes, marshes and rivers that were formed by the glacial erosion of ancient rocks. The rocky Shield topography of the Gulf coast of Labrador was described by early French explorer, Jacques Cartier, as ‘…being composed of stones and horrible rugged rocks; for along the north shore, I did not see one cart-load of earth…’ Later, Samuel de Champlain wrote that the terrain he encountered along the Ottawa River was ‘very barren and sterile’ and ‘far from attractive.’ Much of the Canadian Shield is occupied by boreal forests that provide food and shelter for ducks, geese, numerous species of migratory birds and other woodland
creatures. This area, possessing the world’s t t concentration t ti off llakes k and d rivers, i greatest supported the fur trade on which Canada was built. Following Cartier’s exploration of the St. Lawrence River to the Lachine Rapids near Montreal and Champlain’s discovery of Lake Huron by way of the Ottawa River, French and Scottish voyageurs extended the main fur trade artery along the periphery of the Shield to Lake Athabasca. Fingers of lesser routes spread to Hudson Bay and penetrated the great plains to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Today, the region supports mining, logging and hydroelectric interests but the population remains low. Boreal forests gradually give way to the Arctic tundra by means of a subarctic transitional zone that marks the treeline where conifers intermingle with the tundra. Shallow soils and permafrost prevent trees from developing deep roots and make them vulnerable to being blown over by strong winds. Consequently, they grow in sheltered stands and trees are stunted due to the extreme cold. This region of open forest patterns and stunted tree growth has been called ‘the land of the little sticks.’ Here, extensive pastures of bushy Cladonia lichen grow among the thinning forests. It is the main food source for caribou, moose and musk oxen during the winter months. These animals, in turn, provide food, clothing and shelter to woodland peoples. In the springtime, great herds of caribou migrate from the forest to their summer calving grounds. On the Eastern Shield, the George River herd of Quebec Labrador caribou is one of the largest herds in the world with an estimated 700,000 to 800,000 animals. On the Western Shield, the Bathurst herd of barren ground caribou has about
350,000 animals that summer around Bathurst Inlet. To the west of Hudson Bay, the Qamanirjuaq (Kaminuriak) herd numbers about 500,000 while the Thelon Game Sanctuary is located within the range of the Beverly herd of approximately 300,000 animals. The arrival of caribou to the Barren Grounds marks the advent of the Central Arctic’s brief summer. It was a time of celebration for local Inuit groups and in years of scarcity, the difference between survival and starvation. Caribou, musk oxen, migratory birds and other creatures are lured by the rich food supply of tundra meadows with low growing sedges, grasses, small wild berries, wildflowers, mosses and lichens as well as the dwarf birches and Arctic willows that grow in river valleys. The vast tundra region of northern Canada extends beyond the Shield to the Yukon in the west and encompasses the Arctic archipelago. Including portions of Greenland and Alaska, it is the traditional homeland of the Inuit people who have adapted to one of the most adverse conditions on earth. Unable to control the Arctic environment at large, the sophisticated design and manufacture of their clothing created individual micro climates that allowed them to survive in extremely cold weather. It is no fluke that Robert Peary and Ronald Amundsen, attributed with conquering the North and South Poles respectively, both utilized Inuit technology in their endeavors. In spite of copying the design of the parka (Aleut) or anorak (Inuit ‘anoraq’) and advances in synthetic fibers, the modern world has been unable to duplicate the light weight, insulation and wicking qualities of their garments that were made from a variety of skins, furs and feathers. This unique culture was highlighted on April 1, 1999 with the establishment of their new homeland, the Territory of Nunavut, which was formerly the east-
h Northwest h i i ern part off the Territories. The Canadian portion of the great plains of North America is located between the Western Shield and the western mountains. It is an expansive area that gradually rises from the low lying lakes at the edge of the Shield to the foothills of the Richardson, Mackenzie and Rocky Mountain ranges. The southern part is a triangular section of fertile prairie land that is Canada’s major wheat growing belt. Although it is now considered the agrarian heartland of Canada, the earliest settlements were the forts and towns associated with the fur trade. When Champlain established a fur trading post in 1608 at the site of present day Quebec City, his primary objective was to find a river route to the Pacific. However, this goal was dependent on the success of the fur trading monopoly that had been granted to his employer, the Sieur de Monts. In 1610, with the hope of gaining greater knowledge about the interior and enhancing the monopoly’s trading arrangements, Champlain convinced the Ottawa Algonquins to take some French boys to live with them. It was from this group of young men that emerged the coureurs de bois, men who embraced the freedom and adventure of life in the wilderness.
Wishing you all the joy and prosperity, On this festive month of Ramadan. May Allah bless all the Muslim Community.

Surrey Memorial Hospital Palliative Care Department was the recipient of incredible generosity on Sunday evening. A fundraising dinner sponsored by the Muslim Business Council brought together a cross section of the community whose donations of $56,000.00 have provided 13 Isoflex mattresses for the Laurel House Palliative Care. These mattresses give comfort and ease the pain of those patients. Dr. Habib Naiyyer brought this cause to the attention of MBC and has worked in concert with Don Hickling from the Surrey Memorial Hospital Palliative Care Department to bring the good work that palliative care provides to the citizens of British Columbia to our attention. We heard that Laurel House has 20 private rooms that provide accommodation for family members to stay with their loved ones around the clock. Many of us have had the experience of caring for our ill family members. We know that even with our best intentions it is not always enough to give our loved ones the comfort and care
that they require. Laurel House and Surrey Memorial Hospital’s Palliative Care professionals use the donations to purchase specialized equipment such as lifts and gel mattresses to give patients comfort in their last days. Brother Mohammed Yasin and his devoted team are to be congratulated for putting on such a fabulous evening. But of course it is the commitment and generosity of our community members who donated such an incredible amount of money that will bring peace and comfort to the very ill.

Prepare Your Canadian Citizenship
The Citizenship Residency dency Re Requirement Under the Citizenship Act, an applicant for Canadian citizenship must have resided in Canada for at least 3 years in the 4 years immediately preceding submission of the citizenship application. For individuals who have been a permanent resident for the last four years, this is an easy calculation. You simply add up the days that you spent outside the country, and confirm that you were present in Canada for at least 1095 days. For individuals who have been a permanent resident for less than four years, the calculation may be more complicated. If you became a permanent resident three years ago, and you never left Canada for more than 24 hours at a time since becoming a permanent resident, then – voila! – you meet the residency requirement. But if you did take international trips since becoming a permanent resident, then you need to make some more sophisticated calculations in order to qualify for citizenship. And you’re only in a position to make these “sophisticated calculations” if you lived in Canada before you became a permanent resident and within the last four years. If you did not live in Canada before you became a permanent resident, or if the time that you lived in Canada before becoming a permanent resident is outside the “last 4 year” range - then you need to wait until you accumulate those 1095 days before applying. But if you did live in Canada before
becoming a permanent resident resident, and within the last 4 years, then you might have some additional options. The time you resided in Canada before you became a permanent resident counts as 1/2 time. This means that for every two days that you resided in Canada since becoming a permanent resident, you can count one of them as fulfilling the 1095 days obligation. So if you lived in Canada for a year before becoming a permanent resident, and you were present in Canada for 100% of that year, you can add 182 days to the number of total days you have spent in Canada since becoming a permanent resident. Individuals who have been a permanent resident of Canada for less than 3 years can also use this benefit. For example, if you have been a permanent resident for only two years and have spent a total of 730 days in Canada, you can still qualify for citizenship if you lived in Canada for the two years immediately preceding your acquisition of permanent resident Status, but only if you never took a trip outside of Canada in those two years.
It’s a generous calculation system: one that tries to give as many advantages as possible to applicants, so that you can apply as quickly as possible for the benefit of Canadian citizenship. You should be aware, however, that there are certain periods of time . spent in Canada- that will not help you meet the residence requirement. For example, time
that you spent serving in jail will not count towards the residence requirement. If you think that you meet the residence requirement, you can get started with your citizenship application now. Don’t worry about making a mistake with your calculation - we’ll make sure that you meet the residence requirement before you submit your application.
Applying for Canadian
Citizenship
Congratulations on making it this far! Becoming a citizen is the final step in the immigration process. It signifies your commitment to Canada and your intention to contribute to your adopted country as a member of its citizenry. It is a big step, and it’s important to approach it with care. 22 LIFESTYLE COMMUNICATION SKILLS Shabaan 27, 1435 June 27, 2014
Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor Communication is very vital in our daily life’s. It helps us better understand a person or situation and enables us to resolve differences. It builds trust and respect, create environments where creative ideas, problem solving, affection, and caring can flourish. As simple as communication seems, much of what we try to communicate to others—and what others try to communicate to us— gets misunderstood. This can cause conflict and frustration in personal and professional relationships. By learning these effective communication skills, you can better connect with your spouse, kids, friends, families and co-worker’s. We have to send, receive, and process huge numbers of messages every day. But effective communication is
IQRA SCHOOL
about more than just exchanging information. It’s also teaches about understanding the emotion behind the information. Effective communication can improve relationships at home, work, and in social situations by deepening your connections to others and improving teamwork, decision-making, and problem solving skill. It enables you to communicate even negative or difficult messages without creating conflict or destroying trust. Effective communication combines a set of skills including nonverbal communication, attentive listening, the ability to manage stress in the moment and the capacity to recognize and understand your own emotions and those of the person you’re communicating with. While effective communication is a learned skill, it is more effective when it’s spontaneous rather than formulaic. A speech that is read, for example, rarely has the same impact as a speech that’s delivered (or appears to be delivered) spontaneously. Of course, it takes time and effort to develop these skills and become an effective communicator. The more effort and practice you put, the more instinctive and spontaneous your communication skills will become. shabnam@skcounselling.ca OPEN

QUEST FOR REVOLUTION
By TariqMjaved Sheikh ul Islam Professor Dr. Tahir ul Qadri (TUQ) of Minhaj ul Qur’an said in his video-linked presser, ‘I am returning to Pakistan on June 23 for the sake of the 200 million Pakistanis, and risking my life.’ While explaining the purpose of his visit, he said, ‘Revolution is the only way out of the problems facing the country.’ What is the revolution about? His explanation was, ‘the revolution will end monopoly of a few families on power, include one million people in decision-making, devolve powers to the grass-roots and enforce the Constitution of Pakistan in its true spirit.’ How can we ignore that the current government was elected under the 1973 Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on which all political parties were on board? Question of toppling a democratic government is beyond comprehension. In fact, a few years back, the judicial activism blocked all avenues leading to adventurous toppling. However, a drastic change in the constitution is still pending to accommodate the total elimination of malpractice, exploitation, oppression, injustice and the corruption in all forms express or implied. Unfortunately, the PPP or the PML-N
haven’t been able to deliver as required, required which is why the dual national –Canadian of Pakistani origin Mr.TUQ is back to Pakistan for the second time in order to right the wrongs. Angrily, he asked, if what happened in Model Town is democracy, “Our revolution is where children of the poor could get education and employment, our revolution is elimination of poverty,” he said. “Awami Tehreek’s revolution is democratic and constitutional.” Originally, the trouble started when the Punjab police carried out “operation nonsense,” around TUQ’s residence in Model Town Lahore where many of TUQ’s-loyalists lost their lives, while many were seriously injured. Secondly, diversion of TUQ’s plane created chaos. Thank God, Governor Punjab Ch. Sarwar Husaain did his magic to diffuse the crisis and TUQ finally disembarked at Allama Iqbal international Airport, otherwise a case of hijacking could have been filed by the Emirates Air line and upon conviction his returning to Canada would have been jeopardized. Wisdom is choosing the right time for the right move: In view of operation zarb-eazb, Mr.TUQ chose the wrong timing. Pakistan is at war with terrorists in Waziristan. Thus, the whole nation must be on one page supporting the Pak military to avoid any unpleasant surprise against the State. An extreme caution is the key to cope with delicacy of the sensitive matter. The political differences/democracy issues can always be dealt with amicably later on. With regard to TUQ’s arrival in Islamabad, the government has actually overreacted
reforms in the present electoral system and its replacement with an arrangement that guarantees free, fair and transparent elections in the country. As a citizen of Canada, TUQ is ineligible to be a candidate in Pakistan general elections and has no real stake in the country. It seems as if elections are not what he seeks. What happens next is unclear too. Mr.TUQ like all patriotic Pakistanis wants to see Pakistan as a real welfare state, but due to the ongoing war emergency, all parties, especially the party in power, must proceed with absolute caution to survive the critical situation. To correct the stinky system, the best avenue is one leading to the parliament house where the objection/complaint can be moved with respect to changing the system because otherwise the undemocratic means would further isolate Pakistan from the rest of the World. Let’s hope TUQ doesn’t take a U Turn and returns to Canada leaving his job unfinished. On the contrary, the government is already saying TUQ can leave Pakistan only under law implying he will have to face the music as does Musharraf being on the ECL. It clearly means on account of twin cities incidents, TUQ and his followers will have to face the inevitable consequences of a lot of criminal as well as civil cases. Conclusion: No doubt, Pakistan’s elected leadership is the principal custodian of the democratic project and its transition to democracy. Thus, democracy will only be strengthened if the custodians demonstrate restraint and unflinchingly adhere to the law and the Constitution. And, those interested in the politics of protest must stay within the ambit of constitution whole heartedly in the best interest of Pakistan.
due andd other The d to t fear f th reservations. ti Th plane l should have been allowed to land. Diverting the flight to Lahore is quite irksome causing international mockery against the country. The silly show off was witnessed across the globe; exchanging of rhetoric attitude between TUQ and the government caused a lot of discomfort. TUQ’s publicity-generating plan was to land at Islamabad, and then lead his convoy to Lahore, from where he was planning to lead his self-proclaimed green revolution. Basically, Dr. Qadri appears to be well determined to fight off the prevalent unfair system of governance as it works in favour of the elite who can afford to spend a large chunk of cash and resources on their election campaigns. The system lets them indulge in rigging, and sneak into the assemblies by even getting a low percentage of cast votes in their constituencies. The system is also prone to rigging on a massive scale and even ballot stuffing are among a few of the norms. One may call TUQ’s approach as non-democratic shortcut to true democracy or wrong approach towards unconstitutional power transfer, yet the fact is the ‘have-nots’ of Pakistan are fed up with the stinky system, so is TUQ who has been dreaming for a fair election system aimed at bringing in the true democracy based only on a reformed electoral system. Surprisingly, TUQ isn’t even considering the current development whereby the National Assembly has unanimously passed a motion on June 23, 2014 - authorising the speaker to constitute a parliamentary committee on electoral reforms. The committee will present its recommendations within three months. Indeed, this one is a positive development because it underlines the fact that almost all the stakeholders acknowledge the need for

End of Year Event at Masjid Al-Salam Academy The BCMA Masjid Al-Salam and Education Centre, Week End Islamic School Burnaby has Alhamdulillah finished another year of school. The academy organized the Annual Year End Event on Saturday June 21st 2014. The event was attended and enjoyed by over 250 children and parents. Alhamdulillah, the academy has enrolled 180 students who come from many cities as far as Port Moody, Surrey and North Vancouver. The ceremony was started off with recitation of the Quran by school students followed by an appreciative welcome speech by the Chairperson, Br Daud Ismail. He congratulated the teachers, staff, parents, and all volunteers for yet another remarkable year of success and accomplishments. He added how it makes all of us proud to be part of the achievement of Masjid |Al-Salaam. Considering the original vision of not only constructing a Masjid but an Education Centre satisfies us that it was a right decision and the direction the construction committee took. It also indicates when a group can work together as the Burnaby TEAM did anything is possible. He recognized team members who have passed away like Br. Janif Barka, Br. Salim Buksh and Sr. Zuleikha Razaq (and others) who would have been proud to witness the success of the school and occasion. Next, the Women’s branch Chairperson, Sr. Hazra Ismail inaugurated the first school newsletter, which is a milestone accomplishment for the academy. This was followed by a speech presented by the School Principal and Women’s branch Education Director, Sr. Nuzhat Hafeez. She highlighted the p school’s milestones and accomplish-
ments over the past year year. •Introduced education on the correct way of salaah and revised the Quran curriculum for all levels. To avoid the students from being overwhelmed, they ensured that the Qur’an memorization curriculum included the least possible number of Surahs from Juz 30. This was effective because students had a reduced work load and could work harder towards the right pronunciation of Qur’an recitation. •This year more emphasis was given on students to learn the reading of the Qur’an with the right pronunciation. That is why the criteria for promoting a student to the next class was on the basis of how correct he or she reads the Qur’an. •For our higher levels an added emphasis was given tothe meaning and Tafseer of all the surah that are included in the curriculum. •Increased emphasis on Islamic Arts and craft, Audio-visual aids and Computer aided learning, discipline, Ikhlaq (manners), manners of Mosque, salaat, wuduu, recitation, memorization charts and quizzes. They also had projects and presentations on manners of the masjid. •Dhikir after Salat was one of the greatest achievementsof the school. All the students right from PreK to Level 6 stay after fardh prayer and go out of prayer Hall only after the Dhikir. •Continuing on with the milestones, we continued with our “Love of Allah” workshops for Level 2 to Level 6. It was mandatory to attend. Students did home work on these workshops. It increased their level of love for Allah SWT and which in turn increased kindness towards the creation. j •Student’s pprojects, art and craft work
was displayed and was much appreciated. The presentation of Level 6 student’s project, “how the non-Muslims admire our Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) was highly cherished by the audience. Next came the highlight of the day which was the presentations to all levels from PreK to Level 6. These included nasheeds, plays, Quran recitations and entertaining acts. It was empowering to see the love and dedication that all the children exhibited. This year, the academy had their second annual Qura’an Memorization competition. The trophies to the winners and copies of the Quran with recitation pens for 1st place winners, and trophies and Qurans without recitation pens for 2nd place and 3rd place winners were presented by respected Men and Women Directors of the board members. Fourth place winners were awarded with books. This was the peak of excitement of the event and was well appreciated by all parents and teachers as the outstanding achievements of the students were praised. The event was completed off with an inspiring closing speech by the Men’s Education Director, Br Imaad Ali. Alhamdulillah, the event was professional and all these accomplishments are possible because of passionately dedicated board directors, teachers, staff (Sr. Ruby and Br. Mustafa) and volunteers. The final treat of the day was a delicious BBQ hosted by the board of directors. Insha’Allah we hope that the academy continues to achieve a higher quality of learning and become a source of an excellent learning environment for our children. All praise is for Allah SWT.
The Boy Who Used to Delay His Prayers By Fatima Nadeem Grade 7 Surrey He remembered his grandmother’s warning about praying on time: “My son, you shouldn’t leave prayer to this late time.” His grandmother’s age was 70 but whenever she heard the Adhan, she got up like an arrow and performed Salah/Namaz/prayer. He, however could never win over his ego to get up and pray. Whatever he did, his Salah was always the last to be offered and he prayed it quickly to get it in on time. Thinking of this, he got up and realized that there were only 15 minutes left before Salat-ul Isha. He quickly made Wudhu and performed Salat-ul Maghrib. While making Tasbih, he again remembered his grandmother and was embarrassed by how he had prayed. His grandmother prayed with such tranquility and peace. He began making Dua and went down to make Sajdah and stayed like that for a while. He had been at school all day and was tired, so tired. He awoke abruptly to the sound of noise and shouting. He was sweating profusely. He looked around. It was very crowded. Every direction he looked in was filled with people. Some stood frozen looking around, some were running left and right and some were on their knees with their heads in their hands just waiting. Pure fear and apprehension filled him as he realized where he was. His heart was about to burst. It was the Day of Judgment. When he was alive, he had heard many things about the questioning on the Day of Judgment, but that seemed so long ago. Could this be something his mind made up? No, the wait and the fear were so great that he could not have imagined this. The interrogation was still going on. He began moving frantically from people to people to ask if his name had been called. No one could answer him.
All of a sudden his name was called and the crowd split into two and made a passageway for him. Two people grabbed his arms and led him forward. He walked with unknowing eyes through the crowd. The angels brought him to the center and left him there. His head was bent down and his whole life was passing in front of his eyes like a movie. He opened his eyes but saw only another world. The people were all helping others. He saw his father running from one lecture to the other, spending his wealth in the way of Islam. His mother invited guests to their house and one table was being set while the other was being cleared. He pleaded his case; “I too was always on this path. I helped others. I spread the word of Allah. I performed my Salah. I fasted in the month of Ramadan. Whatever Allah ordered us to do, I did. Whatever he ordered us not to do, I did not.” He began to cry and think about how much he loved Allah. He knew that whatever he had done in life would be less than what Allah deserved and his only protector was Allah. He was sweating like never before and was shaking all over. His eyes were fixed on the scale, waiting for the final decision. At last, the decision was made. The two angels with sheets of paper in their hands, turned to the crowd. His legs felt like they were going to collapse. He closed his eyes as they began to read the names of those people who were to enter Jahannam/Hell. His name was read first. He fell on his knees and yelled that this couldn’t be, “How could I go to Jahannam? I served others all my life, I spread the word of Allah to others.” His eyes had become blurry and he was shaking with sweat. The two angels took him by the arms. As his feet dragged, they went through the crowd and
advanced toward the blazing flames of Jahannam. He was yelling and wondered if there was any person who was going to help him. He was yelling of all the good deeds he had done, how he had helped his father, his fasts, prayers, the Qur’an that he read, he was asking if none of them would help him. The Jahannam angels continued to drag him. They had gotten closer to the Hellfire. He looked back and these were his last pleas. Had not Rasulullah [saw] said, “How clean would a person be who bathes in a river five times a day, so too does the Salah performed five times cleanse someone of their sins?” He began yelling, “My prayers? My prayers? My prayers?” The two angels did not stop, and they came to the edge of the abyss of Jahannam. The flames of the fire were burning his face. He looked back one last time, but his eyes were dry of hope and he had nothing left in him. One of the angels pushed him in. He found himself in the air and falling towards the flames. He had just fallen five or six feet when a hand grabbed him by the arm and pulled him back. He lifted his head and saw an old man with a long white beard. He wiped some dust off himself and asked him, “Who are you?” The old man replied, “I am your prayers.” “Why are you so late! I was almost in the Fire! You rescued me at the last minute before I fell in.” The old man smiled and shook his head. “You always performed me at the last minute, and did you forget?” At that instant, he blinked and lifted his head from Sajdah. He was in a sweat. He listened to the voices coming from outside. He heard the adhan for Salat-ul Isha. He got up quickly and went to perform Wudhu. “Say Your Prayers Before Prayers For You Are Said.”
Allah is Watchig Seven year old Hassan proved himself to be a hero last week at Masjid Al-Iman in Victoria while playing with some kids in the Mosque. They noticed that the donation boxes had accidentally been left unlocked. Hassan took it upon himself to protect the donations, so he leaned against the boxes, shielding them with his arms and safeguarding the money which people gave for the sake of Allah. He persisted until an adult showed up to attend to the situation. What this young boy did not know, is that there was a security camera filming his every move. He did not do this for the sake of the camera, he did this because he knew that even though no adults were around, Allah was still watching, and the Angels were still recording. When I was informed about the good deed this young boy did, I announced to the community what a wonderful story this is, and that we should be proud that Allah has blessed us with such an honest youth in our community. I called the boy, who is a yellow belt in karate, and has memorized 2 Juz’ of the Qur’an, up to the minbar after Jumuah and presented him with some well-deserved gifts.

Notice to Industry Government Of Canada Improves Labelling Of Halal Food Products Regulatory changes will help consumers make informed food decisions OTTAWA, April 23, 2014: After extensive industry consultation the Government of Canada has amended the Food and Drug Regulations to provide consumers with more information about how food labelled as HALAL are made. Halal claims on food labels, packaging or advertising material must now include the name of the certifying body. This will provide consumers with assurances that the food meets a certifying body’s standard and allow them to obtain specific information about the standards the food has met. This change will also provide consistency for industry and help prevent mislabelling practices and claims regarding HALAL food products. This change does not affect food safety. Halal products sold in Canada are still required to meet Canada’s stringent food safety standards. These requirements will apply to both domestic and imported products. The amendments to the Food and Drug Regulations were published in Canada Gazette, Part II on April 23, 2014.Date modified:2014-04-23

SWISS MUSLIM PLAYERS CHALLENGE SENTIMENTS With dream of earning victories for Switzerland in the World Cup, a galaxy of Muslim players in the Swiss squad are challenging Euroscepticism and anti-immigrants’ sentiments in a country where minarets ban flared up anti-Muslim emotions few years ago. After bans on minarets in 2009 and face veil in 2013, an anti-immigration referendum was passed in February 2014 demanding a quota for immigration be set. After the ban, passed despite the fact that more than 22.3% of Swiss people are of immigrant origins, all eyes are now fixed on the Swiss football team with its multicultural nature. The Swiss squad in Brazil 2014 features many players from an immigrant background, with players of Albanian, FYROM Macedonian, Bosniak, Cape Verdean, and Ivorian roots. The team, comprised mainly of Muslim players from Albania, was ranked by FIFA before World Cup Brazil as the sixth best team in the world, ahead of traditional powers such as Italy, France, and The Netherlands. Here are short portrays for key Muslim players in the Swiss team:
Xherdan Shaqiri The 22-year-old Xherdan Shaqiri will represent the Swiss national team during Brazil 2014 World Cup. Born in Yugoslavia from Albanian origin, the Muslim footballer plays as a midfielder for Bayern Munich in the German Bundesliga. Since his breakthrough into Basel’s first team, the left-footed midfielder has drawn widespread praise for his speed, both on and off the ball. Shaqiri won the 2012–13 UEFA Champions League title with Bayern
in late May, as well as the Bundesliga and the DFB Pokal title, making him one of the Bayern Munich players to have won the treble. Shaqiri was named man of the match in Switzerland’s World Cup opening match in Brazil against Ecuador.
Philippe Senderos The Swiss player, who was born in February 1985 in Geneva, became a regular at Arsenal and won the FA Cup in 2005 before moving to Valencia CF. The 29-year-old defender has embraced Islam in 2012, making the shahada or declaration of faith at an Islamic center in Manchester. His first landmark victory was in the European under-17 Championship in 2002, while his first international match was in 2005 between France and Switzerland. With 53 international caps and five international goals, the 190-cm Valencia defender was named by his country among its squad’s key players at the world Cup 2014.
Admir Mehmedi Born in March 1991 in Macedonia, the Muslim footballer is among those listed to play for the Swiss squad in FIFA World Cup 2014. Spending the majority of his youth career at FC Winthertu, the Albanian Mehmedi played his first international match between England and Switzerland in June 2014. Play-
ing for Switzerland at the UEFA European U-21 Championship 2011, the Muslim forward player made his first international debut in that same year. Mehmedi, 183-cm, has a history of 22 international caps and two international goals.
tional goals, the 181-cm Inler was qualified to captain the Swiss Squad in FIFA World Cup 2014.
