Cancer forces reluctant Layton to take time off He is gaunt. His voice is raspy. And he has a new, undisclosed type of cancer that will require him to step away from the leadership of the federal New Democrats just months after the party achieved unprecedented electoral success. Christian extremist seeks white European ‘jihad’ At more than 1,500 pages and nearly a decade in the making, the manifesto detailing Norwegian mass-killer Anders Behring Breivik’s murderous “crusade” gives a chilling picture of a self-confessed “monster.” It was designed to bring about the revolution that the 32-yearold says is needed to end a centuries-long Muslim colonization of Europe. The final entry comes scant hours before Friday’s Oslo carnage. He emailed the 1,518page document to his friends just hours before he carried out Norway’s worst terrorist attack. In it, he urged others to follow his example by killing anyone particularly political leaders - who tolerates Islam. “I will be labelled as the biggest (Nazi-) monster ever witnessed since WW2,” says the “Marxist Hunter” in what is at times a rambling, at times bewilderingly detailed thesis. He calls for adherents to spawn large families of white European “jihadists.” “If you are not willing to sacrifice your own life, then I would strongly advise you to make babies and ensure that they will be willing to sacrifice theirs when the time is right.”

Famine in Somalia is ‘immoral’: UN aid coordinator

With the world scrambling to rescue 12 million people on the brink of starvation in

the Horn of Africa, UN emergency official Cristina Amaral said the fact that children are dying of hunger is “immoral”. As head of emergency operations in Africa for the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Amaral has been warning about the crisis facing the drought-stricken region since November, after the rainy season failed. Now she says it’s not enough for

donor countries to stump up some cash for immediate food aid -- there needs to be long-term investment to help farmers resist droughts and international mediation to bring peace to war-torn Somalia. “When we have a declaration of famine in the 21st century, we should consider this immoral,” Amaral told AFP in an interview as she prepared for emergency talks at FAO in Rome on Monday aimed at coordinating the aid effort. Ministers, aid chiefs and charities are meeting to discuss ways of stepping up food supplies and delivering them to the epicentre of the famine in southern Somalia, much of which is under the control of Islamist militants. “Without access to south Somalia, we’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg -- those refugees arriving in Kenya and Ethiopia,” Amaral said. “There are many more -- we estimate 3.7 million -- that need emergency

assistance,” she added. The Al Qaedainspired Shebab group has banned humanitarian aid agencies like the World Food Programme from working in the region, although FAO has been able to operate several small programmes to help farmers through local partners. “We hope that the political negotiation will evolve and that the humanitarian situation prevailing will make the clans in Somalia negotiate in a way that will free the access to people in need,” she said. Amaral said the international community is now seeing the results of years of under-investment in solutions to the chronic drought problems of the region. Projects to improve the management of pastures by herders, to improve animal health and to introduce more resilient crops would go a long way, she said. She said FAO needs $135 million dollars (94 million euros) for its projects. Amaral’s work has taken her to some of the most deprived countries and worst humanitarian crises in the world, with some of her most recent efforts concentrated in the Democratic

Republic of Congo, Haiti and Zimbabwe. She said that, bad as the current crisis is, it still does not compare with previous humanitarian disasters in Ethiopia and Somalia in the 1980s and 1990s. “Overall we have more capacity to respond today,” she said. But she added: “We’re afraid that things will get worse in the coming months if nothing is done now.” UN agencies say tens of thousands of people have died due to the drought and warn half a million children are at risk of dying. One aggravating factor in the drought crisis has been the sharp spike in food and fuel prices in countries like Djibouti and Somalia that are net importers of food -- a point expected to be raised at the FAO talks on Monday. Whatever the aid strategy hashed out in the near future for the region will be, Amaral warned that the worst-affected country -- Somalia -- will never see an end to the cycle of drought and starvation without peace. US to oppose Palestine’s UN bid The US is to oppose Palestine’s application to the UN for full membership status when the body’s General Assembly convenes in September. Rosemary DiCarlo, the US deputy ambassador to the UN, said that the US would not support “unilateral action” by the Palestinians at the UN. DiCarlo was speaking at the final, regular UN Security Council discussion about the Israeli-Palestinian situation. DiCarlo said the US is pressing for a resumption of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, insists on a negotiated settlement, and will oppose any unilateral action by the Palestinians at the UN. The US is among five veto-power members of the Security Council. It only considers UN admissions to the General Assembly from recommendations by its 15-member council. In response to DiCarlo’s statement, Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian UN observer, said that with more than 120 countries already recognising an independent Palestinian state, any UN action, whether at the Security Council or the General Assembly, would not be unilateral. “On the contrary, it is multilateral, and the consecration of the two-state solution in bold resolutions, including recognition of the state of Palestine, with East Jerusalem as its capital, on the bases of the pre-1967 borders and its admission as a full member of the organisation will help to make the two-state solution more inevitable,” he said. Western diplomats say the Palestinians have not decided whether to seek membership in the UN as a sovereign state or to press for a non-binding resolution recognising a Palestinian state without UN membership. Mansour said “This is the time for Palestine’s independence.” He said the Palestinians are ready to resume negotiations with the pre-1967 war borders as the foundation, but stressed “we cannot keep waiting for Israel to negotiate in good faith.” In line with the US sentiment, Ron Prosor, Israel’s UN ambassador said “it is clear that the Palestinians are not united and are far from united for peace”. The Palestinians want to establish a state in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, territories Israel occupied after the 1967 Middle East war. Salam Fayyad, prime minister and head of the Palestinian Authority, based in the West Bank has limited say in 40 per cent of the West Bank, while Israel retains overall control over the territory. Palestinian state-building efforts are often hampered by Israeli restrictions. “We are seeking an independent state and that cannot be achieved without ending the occupation”. Israel’s current government says it’s willing, in principle, to accept the establishment of a Palestinian state. However, it says it will not give up East Jerusalem, the Palestinians’ hoped-for capital, and severely restricts access to Gaza, ruled by the Hamas since 2007. US President Barack Obama announced in September 2010, as US-brokered direct Israeli-Palestinian negotiations resumed, that a peace treaty should be signed in a year, but those talks collapsed weeks later after Israel ended its freeze on building settlements. The Palestinians insist they will not resume peace talks until Israel stops building settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Israel maintains that the Palestinians should not be setting conditions for talks and that settlements did not stop them from negotiating in the past. Source: Al-Jazeera

78 die in Morocco plane crash: report A military transport plane slammed into a mountainside in bad weather in southern Morocco on Tuesday, killing all 80 people on board, hospital and military sources said.

Libya PM says no talks until bombs stop A United Nations envoy trying to find a way to end Libya’s war has made little visible headway on a visit to Tripoli for talks with the prime minister. The government told him on Tuesday that NATO must end air strikes before any talks can begin and that Muammar Gaddafi’s role as leader was non-negotiable, though rebels and the West insist he step down. Britain and France, carrying out most of the NATO bombing attacks, this week dropped their insistence that Gaddafi leave the country as part of any settlement, in an apparent softening of their position. The UN envoy, Abdul Elah al-Khatib, arrived in Tripoli straight from talks with rebels in their eastern stronghold of Benghazi on Monday. He met Prime Minister Al-Baghdadi Ali AlMahmoudi who said they had a productive dialogue - but about implementing UN resolutions, not negotiating an end to the five-month-old conflict in which neither side seems to have the upper hand. “This aggression [air strikes] needs to stop immediately, without that we cannot have a dialogue, we cannot solve any problems in Libya,” Mahmoudi told a news conference afterward. In London, the British and French foreign ministers, William Hague and Alain Juppe, called once more for Gaddafi to leave power but, on the matter of whether he could stay in Libya, both said it was up to Libyans to decide. Britain said it had not changed policy but comments by Hague were interpreted as tacit backing for the proposal, floated last week by France, that Gaddafi could remain in Libya. A rebel leader this week appeared to endorse the view, which would mark a major shift from previous rebel demands that he leave and be tried for war crimes in The Hague. Deadlines are approaching for the NATO-led alliance, whose UN mandate for military action - granted on the grounds that it would protect civilians - expires in two months. Hopes an agreement could be reached before Ramadan have faded as the Muslim holy month begins next week. Gaddafi says he supports talks with the rebels and the West, but has shown no sign of agreeing to cede power after 41 years of unchallenged supremacy, much of it as a pariah in Western eyes. In his talks with the Benghazi-based rebel leadership council, Khatib discussed ideas for ending the war but said later a firm initiative had yet to take shape. “We did not put a plan in front of them. We discussed the views and ideas on how we can trigger a political process ... to achieve a political solution,” he told Reuters. He has said his ideas involve a ceasefire and, simultaneously, setting up a mechanism to manage the transitional period. He has not given details. Senior rebel official Mahmoud Jibril said he had underlined that the rebels would accept only an initiative that involved the removal of Gaddafi from power as a first step to peace. Dr. Fai released on bail

Syed Ghulam Nabi Fai appeared in US District Court on Tuesday for a detention hearing. He was arrested last week on charges that he tried to influence the policy of the White House and Congress on Kashmir while working under the supervision of Pakistan’s spy agency. US Magistrate Judge John Anderson released Fai into the custody of his wife and placed him under home detention with electronic monitoring. Fai is the executive director of the Kashmiri American Council. He was arrested on a charge of being an unregistered agent of a foreign government. The political leadership of Pakistan, Azad Kashmir and Indian occupied Kashmir strongly condemned the arrest of Dr. Ghu lam Nabi Fai. A complete strike was also observed on July 23 against his arrest in Kashmir valley. At a federal court hearing in Alexandria, Virginia, the judge ruled that Fai must post $100,000 in bond and he required detention at Fai’s home in Virginia, along

with electronic monitoring. Fai’s travel is restricted to the Washington, D.C., area, and he must have no contact with Ahmad, any potential witnesses or with any foreign government representatives, Anderson ruled from the bench at the end of the 30-minute hearing. Fai, who did not say anything during the hearing, faces up to five years in prison if convicted. No date has been set for his trial. Kromberg said the foreign intelligence service has an obligation to protect Fai and that he presented a risk of fleeing the country. Defense lawyer Nina Ginsberg disagreed. She said Pakistan has strenuously denied the allegations in the case and that there was no evidence to support Kromberg’s claims that the intelligence agency would try to help Fai. US justice officials charged and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested Dr. Gulam Nabi Fai 62, a US citizen on July 19 over a decadeslong effort to push the Kashmiri cause in Washington.

Clinton slams bill to impose conditions on Pak aid

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has warned Congress that she will fight to block a Republican push to restrict aid for Israel’s Arab neighbors and Pakistan and cut off climate change funds. Two panels in the Republican-led House of Representatives have approved billions of dollars in cuts in foreign affairs spending and imposed a range of new restrictions concerning issues from the Middle East to abortion. Clinton voiced “profound concern” about a bill approved by the House Foreign Affairs Committee. She told its chair, Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, that she would ask President Barack Obama to veto the measure if it came to his desk. The restrictions in the bill “would be debilitating to my efforts to carry out a considered foreign policy and diplomacy, and to use foreign assistance strategically to that end,” Clinton wrote Ros-Lehtinen in a letter Tuesday. “Should this bill be presented to the president, I will recommend personally that he veto the bill.” But even without a veto, it remains unclear if the bill will survive. Obama and Clinton’s Democratic Party retains control of the Senate after losing the House of Representatives in elections last year. Senator John Kerry, a close Obama ally who heads the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, submitted his own legislation on Wednesday that would defend a number of administration priorities, including aid for climate change. The House Foreign Affairs Committee approved $6.4 billion in cuts from Obama’s budget requests in a marathon two-day debate last week, in

which Republicans said that the United States -- on the brink of defaulting on its debt -- needed to cut foreign spending and toughen its line against US rivals. Clinton charged that the bill had “crippling restrictions on security assistance where maximum flexibility is needed,” pointing to cuts on aid to Arab states including Egypt, which is transitioning to democracy. The House bill would bar defense aid to Egypt, Lebanon, the Palestinian Authority and Yemen if extremist groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood, Hezbollah and Hamas are part of the government. The measure would also impose conditions on civilian aid to Pakistan, ending a five-year, $7.5 billion package without proof that the country where Osama bin Laden was killed in May is acting against militants. However, the House committee defeated a proposal that would have ended all aid to Pakistan from the start of the next fiscal year in October. The Obama administration recently suspended a third of US defense aid to Pakistan over similar concerns. But it has pledged to pursue long-term civilian assistance in hopes of nurturing an environment less friendly to extremism. The House bill barred aid for climate change. Developed countries, including the European Union and Japan, have promised some $100 billion a year to worst-hit poor countries starting in 2020 as part of a global deal to fight rising temperatures. The House panel also voted to cut funding to leftist-led Latin American nations and to force the United States to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, a sticking point in Middle East peace negotiations. In one item that caused sharp disagreement, the House bill would prevent US funding to any foreign non-governmental group involved in abortion. A subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee, which is in charge of spending, moved ahead on a similar bill that would authorize $47.7 billion for foreign affairs, rolling back numerous Obama initiatives. “In this difficult geopolitical and economic climate, the American people deserve a policy that is based on American principles, looks out for American interests and wisely invests American dollars,” said Congresswoman Kay Granger, the Republican who heads the subcommittee.

Obama and Boehner trade barbs in debt battle

With seven days to go before the U.S. hits its debt ceiling deadline, the political and financial crisis appeared

to deepen Tuesday, a day after President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner accused one another in nationally televised speeches of failing to negotiate in good faith to avert an unprecedented and catastrophic American default. Positions seemed only to harden after Obama and Boehner engaged in an extraordinary joust over fiscal issues that have consumed Washington since a large block of first-term members of the U.S. House of Representatives, elected last year under the mantle of the small-government, low-tax Tea Party, returned the lower chamber to Republican control. Obama said the long and caustic fight was a “partisan three-ring circus.” Boehner, borrowing the president’s very words, said Obama “would not take yes for an answer.” Obama spoke from the East Room of the White House. Boehner issued his rebuttal moments later from his ceremonial Speaker’s chamber in the Capitol. Their words swept through the national television audience just hours after Boehner and Senator Harry Reid, leader of the Democratic-controlled Senate, offered competing legislation to break the deadlock over raising the U.S. Treasury’s ability to continue borrowing money to pay its bills after the current $14.3-trillion limit expires next Tuesday. The White House has threatened to veto emergency House

legislation aiming to avert a default, a pre-emptive strike issued as Boehner laboured to line up enough votes in his own party to pass the measure. The bill would raise the debt limit by $1 trillion while making cuts to federal spending of $1.2 trillion — reductions that the Republicans’ most ardent conservatives say aren’t enough. The measure also would establish a committee of legislators to recommend additional budget savings of $1.8 trillion, which would trigger an additional $1.6 trillion increase in the debt limit. The White House objects to the requirement for a second vote before the 2012 elections. As Washington legislators scrambled to reach a deal before the U.S. runs out of borrowing room, a report by British bank Barclays on Monday suggested there might be more breathing space than anyone anticipates. The U.S. is on track to hit its $14-trillion debt limit by Aug. 2. But the bank says higher than anticipated tax receipts mean the U.S. might not go technically insolvent until Aug. 10. That’s because the Treasury took in $14 billion more than it anticipated from taxes in the week ended July 15. That surplus might be enough to tide Uncle Sam over until its next large bill (a $22-billion Social Security payment) is due. House Republicans later said they would postpone a vote on the plan so the bill could be modified. Representative David Dreier of California said the postponement was necessary because congressional scorekeepers said the bill would not produce the budget savings promised by Boehner when he unveiled it Monday. The bill was initially expected to go to a vote Wednesday, but Dreier said that the measure could come to a vote as early as Thursday after changes are made. Senate majority leader Reid said the measure stood no chance of passing the Senate even if it cleared the House. He pronounced it “dead on arrival.” Many have predicted dire consequences for the American and global economies should the United States default on its debts. Source: CBC.ca

Syria passes law to allow political parties Syria’s government, under massive pressure to reform or quit, has adopted a draft law allowing for the creation of new political parties alongside the long-ruling Baath party. The multi-party bill approved by the Cabinet late on Sunday follows other concessions Bashar al-Assad,

the Syrian president, has made as part of his efforts to quell more than four months of protests against his government. The draft law, which still needs parliamentary approval, would allow for the establishment of any political party that is not based on religious or tribal lines, or discriminates due to ethnicity, gender or race, the news agency said. Assad’s ruling Baath party, which calls for “unity, freedom and socialism”, has held a monopoly over political life in Syria since a 1963 military coup. A key demand of the protest movement is the abolishment of Article 8 in the Syrian constitution, which states that the Baath party is the only leader of the state and society. Yasser Saadeldine, a Syrian opposition figure living in exile, said the new law “is designed to show on paper that the regime tolerates dissent while

continuing killings and repression”. Lawmaker Mohammad Habash told The Associated Press that the bill in itself was positive but that some articles of the constitution must be amended first, including article 8. Assad, who inherited power in 2000 after the death of his father, President Hafez Assad, has made a series of overtures to try to ease the growing social uprising. He lifted the decades-old emergency laws that gave the government a free hand to arrest people without charge, granted Syrian nationality to thousands of Kurds, a longostracised minority, and issued several pardons. Yet the concessions failed to sap the momentum of the protest movement, which has dismissed them as either symbolic or far too late. As a first step, the protesters are demanding an immediate end to the security crackdown and the release of thousands of people who have been detained in recent months. The government, however, has shown no signs of letting up in its efforts to crush the uprising. On Sunday, Syrian troops stormed a northwestern village and made sweeping arrests in the region and in the capital Damascus. Security forces rounded up hundreds of civilians in Damascus and made arrests near Homs and in the town of Sarakeb in the northwestern province of Idlib near the Turkish border, activists said. New amateur video shows what it says are shops in Homs and Damascus closed in protest against Assad. In Homs, troops backed by tanks “deployed heavily in Duar al-Fakhura and around the neighbourhood of AlNazihin,” Abdel Karim Rihawi, who heads the Syrian League for the Defence of Human Rights, told the AFP news agency. The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported a new military deployment in Homs, quoting an activist in the city. Source: Al-Jazeera

Mau Mau Kenyans allowed to sue UK government

Four elderly Kenyans have been told they can sue the Foreign Office for their alleged torture by British colonial authorities 50 years ago. The High Court said the group could seek damages over their treatment during the 1950s and 60s. Mr Justice McCombe said the claimants had an “arguable case” and it would be “dishonourable” to block the action. Ministers say the UK government is not responsible for the actions of the colonial administration. The decision means that the government will have to defend accusations of torture, murder, sexual assault and other alleged abuses at a full damages trial in 2012. The four Kenyans, Ndiku Mutwiwa Mutua, Paulo Muoka Nzili, Wambugu Wa Nyingi and Jane Muthoni Mara, all in their 70s and 80s, say ministers in London approved systematic abuse in special camps. A fifth claimant has died since the action began. The High Court heard that Mr Mutua and Mr Nzili had been castrated, Mr Nyingi was beaten unconscious in an incident in which 11 men were clubbed to death, and Mrs Mara had been subjected to appalling sexual abuse. Mr Justice McCombe said in his judgement there was “ample evidence” to show there may have been “systematic torture of detainees during the Emergency”. “I emphasise that I have not found that there was systematic torture in the Kenyan camps nor that, if there was, the UK government is liable to detainees, such as the claimants, for what happened. “I have simply decided that these five claimants have arguable cases in law and on the facts as presently known.” The trial is expected to include critical material from some 17,000 previously lost documents which were discovered earlier this year in the Foreign Office’s archives. The papers include detailed reports of atrocities which were sent to ministers in the 1950s and 1960s. Some of the documents implicate British colonial officials in abuse at detention camps which were set up to smash the pre-independence uprising. Professor David Anderson of Oxford University, who unearthed the documents, is working with other experts to log the potential evidence. So far, the names of a further 600 apparent victims have been found in the papers, all of whom could theoretically sue if they are alive. Martyn Day, solicitor for the Kenyans, said the ruling was a historic judgement. “Over 50 years ago our clients suffered the most terrible torture at the hands of the British Colonial regime,” he said. “Our clients have been battling for years to obtain justice for what they endured. Our government has seemed hell-bent on preventing that happening. “They want some sort of justice, an apology, some sort of money that would give them peace in their final years.” Source: BBC News

Norway : Continued from pg 1 double attacks. But police say he has not accepted “criminal responsibility” and his lawyer said on Sunday that Breivik saw “nothing reprehensible” in his actions. The text outlines his transformation as he strives to return Europe to an almost medieval racial and religious makeup. It ranges from denunciations of political correctness to how to cover up the real reasons for purchasing chemicals from China for use in weaponry. Friday’s sickening scenes trigger the start of a “pre-emptive war” he says. It is “waged in order to repel, defeat or weaken an ongoing Islamic invasion/colonization, to gain a strategic advantage in an unavoidable war before that threat materializes.” He adds: “We cannot afford to wait around and re-act when it is too late.” He launched his movement in London in 2002, he says, “one of several leaders of the national and pan-European Patriotic Resistance Movement.” Concrete planning for Operation Martyr, as he baptized the events in and around Oslo, began in earnest in the autumn of 2009, with the setting up of “front” companies including a mining company and a farm to cover his acquisition of materials for military use, such as fertilizer for his bomb. “In this manifesto, he appears like a loner and someone with a very peculiar intellectual influence,” says Thomas Hegghammer, senior research fellow at the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment in Oslo, expert on terrorism and violent Islamism. “If he wrote 1,500 pages, it’s pretty obvious he has thought a lot about it.” Source: Vancouver Sun

A BLESSED MONTH FOR MUSLIMS

O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self restraint [alBaqarah 2:183]. Ramadan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur’an, as a guide to mankind, also clear (signs) for guidance and judgment (between right and wrong). Since, the Islamic calendar is lunar and the days begin at sunset, so there may be some discrepancy of a day depending on when the new Moon/Crescent is first visible. Thus, the Moon sightings may cause a variation of the date which begins at sunset on the day before the date specified for the first Ramadan (Ramadhan or Ramzan). Furthermore, Ramadan is the 9th month in the Islamic calendar consisting of 12 months with 354 days. The month is so blessed as the first verses of the noble Qur’an were revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on the night called “Laila tul Qadr” which happened on one odd night during the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Whoever misses Lailatul Qadr - is indeed a loser.” Hadrat Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah has said, “When Ramadan begins, the doors of Paradise are opened, while the doors of Hell are shut, and the Shiateen (Satans) are chained tightly.” Also the doors of Mercy are opened.” [Sahih

al-Bukhari Vol 1, Page 255 and Sahih alMuslim, Vol 1, Page 346] This year, the blessed month is likely to begin on Monday, August 1, 2011 - depending upon the moon sighting. Fasting in Ramadan is compulsory for every Muslim, as it constitutes one of the five pillars of Islam. Therefore, Muslims all over the globe feel excited to begin a period of self-overhaul. Being one of the five pillars of Islam, fasting from dawn to dusk during Ramadan is obligatory upon all healthy Muslims. Nevertheless, the sick, the elderly or the travellers are conditionally exempted. Those exempted also include children who are yet to attain the age of puberty and women during their monthly cycle of menstruation or those still discharging blood after delivering the baby. Also, the pregnant woman, who is worried for the fetus in her womb, is certainly allowed to eat and drink during Ramadan. If a breast feeding mom is concerned that her child would not have enough breast milk after she starts fasting, she is also allowed to postpone her fasting till after Ramadan on some convenient time. The fasting starts at dawn and ends at the Sunset with IFTAR followed by slaatul Maghreb, however, Fasting has to be intended prior to dawn in order to be valid.

Working to Resolve Surrey’s Education Crisis By Linda Stromberg, Concerned parent and Ad Hoc Committee Member

In September, students will return to our schools in even greater numbers than when they left at the end of June. Although the schools are dark, the Ad Hoc Committee of Concerned Stakeholders, concerned with the serious overcrowding of Surrey Schools and lack of capital funds since 2005 - to build new schools - is increasing its efforts to work with the Provincial Government, to secure immediate capital funding, and ensure that they develop a long term funding plan for education that meets the needs of Surrey’s growing community. Even if the government acted today, it will take up to 5 years and $273 million to build the schools Surrey needs today, yet before construction of these schools is complete, our school population will grow by 4000-5000 students. We need funding commitments to meet this growth. This problem will have an increasingly negative impact on Surrey’s children and young

And during the fasting hours, the Muslims are strictly required to abstain from even Halal things such as satisfying the stomach including sexual advancement towards spouses. Another advantage of Fasting is: it disallows a fasting person to use tongue unwisely - telling lies, doing gossips, backbiting and slander. Instead, it motivates the Muslims to spend time reciting the noble Qur’an, attending khutbas (sermons), performing nawafils, etc. Those who offer nawafils during Ramadan would have their sins forgiven by Allah SWT. Ramadan also encourages the Muslims to perform ten days of i’tikaf (seclusion) for more reward from the Creator SWT. The Prophet (SAW) also strongly recommended Tarawih prayers during the month of Ramadan. The Tarawih, which is to be performed after Isha prayer, can be done either individually or in congregation. Some Muslims offer twenty rakaats, while the others leave after just eight. The most inspiring is the aware Muslims take almost complete advantage of doing their self-accountability for their own discipline. It does provide a greater chance to Muslims all over the globe to offer prayers and observe fasting in order to please Allah SWT. Moreover, the month gives an excellent

opportunity to all the fasting Muslims to feel the degree of torture due to an ongoing hunger, which the destitute people have to go through almost on daily basis. In Ramadan, Muslims donate a lot by participating in food drives for the poor or other charitable activities. The Prophet of Allah said, “Whoever does not give up lying and evil actions, then Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink” [Saheeh al-Bukhari]. In short, the Muslims can greatly benefit from the Ramadhan to create a real connection with Allah SWT that can continue throughout the eleven remaining months. There are tens of thousands of starving people around the globe who remind the fasting Muslims of how the hunger really feels like. No doubt, fasting has health and spiritual benefits, yet we must never forget that the main goal of Fasting is to provide an environment of individual and collective training and character correction. Hence, the essence of fasting remains the attainment of greater heights of righteousness by getting closer to Allah SWT.

Waan laysa lil insani illa ma’ sa’aa That man can have nothing but what he strives for.

Fasting-A broader View

By Mufti Mohammad Shujaath Ali Almost all the ancient regions in the world have the concept of fasting. Here are the few examples of some of the religions that emphasise on the importance of fasting in their traditions Fasting in Judaism The Jewish calendar contains comparatively few regular fast-days. Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), is the only fast-day prescribed by the Mosaic Law: And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you: For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD. It shall be a sabbath of rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls, by a statute for ever (Leviticus 16:29-31). The Jews observe ten days of repentance starting with Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) and ending with Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement). This is a time to consider the sins of the previous year and repent. Yom Kippur is the day on which Jews believe that the fates of all Jews are to be sealed for the coming year. This day is held to be the most solemn and serious day in the Jewish calendar, which involves grieving for sins committed in the past year as well as praying for forgiveness. On this day, Jews fast for 25 hours from sundown on the previous evening until sundown the next night. To the Jews, fasting is more than just refraining from drinking and eating: working on fast days is not permitted, and having sexual relations and bathing, as well as using ointments and leather shoes, are prohibited. Fasting in Christianity From the sermon on the Mount, we know that Jesus instructed his earliest disciples to fast: When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you (Matthew 6:16). On three occasions in the Bible, people fasted for forty days. The first occasion was when Moses received the Ten Commandments (Exodus 34:28). The next occasion was when Elijah encountered God before the anointing of Elisha (I King19) The third occasion for such a fast was when Jesus was in the wilderness and tempted by Satan (Matthew 4:2). There are many reasons given in the Bible for fasting. It is seen as an act of sacrifice that reminds Christians of God and through fasting, while the flesh is denied comfort,

the spirit is strengthened. Fasting in Hinduism Fasting in Hinduism is the denial of the physical needs of the body for the sake of spiritual gains. According to Hindu scriptures, fasting helps create an attunement with the Absolute by establishing a harmonious relationship between the body and the soul. Fasting is prescribed on all Ekadasi days. Ekadasi is a Sanskrit word that refers to the 11th day of the lunar fortnight, twice a month (Bowker, 173). Vedic scriptures strongly recommend observing a complete fast on the day of Ekadasi (without drinking water). Everyone from the age of eight to eighty, irrespective of caste, gender, or any material consideration, is recommended to fast on this day to make spiritual progress. Fasting is seen not only as a part of worship; it is also a training of the mind and the body to endure all hardships and to persevere under difficulties and not give up. Fasting in Buddism The Buddha’s spiritual awakening is closely linked to fasting. The moment he stopped fasting, he realized his great awakening. The story of the Buddha is in itself a lesson in fasting, as he was a prince who renounced all worldly desires in search of the truth about life. his experiences made him realize that desire was the root of all evil and of human life. Food was man’s first and most basic desire. So, he decided to give up this desire and gain freedom from the tangles of worldly life and suffering. Initially, he at only one grain of rice and a sesame seed per day. He soon grew so thin that he could touch his spine by pressing his stomach 2 - Virtues of fasting in Islam Allaah The Almighty has distinguished the month of Ramadhaan from other months with many characteristics and virtues. They include the following: The breath of the fasting person is better in the sight of Allaah The Almighty than the fragrance of musk. The angels keep asking Allaah The Almighty to forgive the fasting persons until they break their fast. Allaah The Almighty decorates His Paradise everyday and says: “My righteous servants are about to be rid of burdens and harms and then move to you.” The devils are fettered. The gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hellfire are closed. There is Laylat-ul-Qadr (the Night of Divine Decree) which is better than one thousand months. Whoever is deprived from the blessings of this night has been deprived from all goodness. The fasting people are forgiven on the last night of Ramadhaan. Allaah The Almighty frees many people from Hell on each night of Ramadhaan. 3. The purpose of fasting To develop and strengthen our powers of self-control, so that we can resist wrong-

ful desires and bad habits, and therefore “guard against evil” . In fasting, by refraining from the natural human urges to satisfy one’s appetite, we are exercising our ability of self-restraint, so that we can then apply it to our everyday life to bring about selfimprovement. To attain nearness and closeness to God so that He becomes a reality in our lives. As we bear the rigours of fasting purely for the sake of following a Divine commandment, knowing and feeling that He can see all our actions however secret, it intensifies the consciousness of God in our hearts, resulting in a higher spiritual experience. To learn to refrain from usurping other’s rights and belongings. In fasting we voluntarily give up even what is rightfully ours; how can then we think of taking what is not ours but belongs to someone else? Charity and generosity is especially urged during Ramadan. We learn to give, and not to take. The deprivation of fasting makes us sympathise with the suffering of others, and desirous of alleviating it; and it makes us remember the blessings of life which we normally take for granted.

Volume 3, Book 31, Number 118: Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “Fasting is a shield (or a screen or a shelter). So, the person observing fasting should avoid sexual relation with his wife and should not behave foolishly and impudently, and if somebody fights with him or abuses him, he should tell him twice, ‘I am fasting.” The Prophet added, “By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, the smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. (Allah says about the fasting person), ‘He has left his food, drink and desires for My sake. The fast is for Me. So I will reward (the fasting person) for it and the reward of good deeds is multiplied ten times.”

Mufti Mohammad Shujaath Ali held a Ramdaan prepration lecture in Masjid-ul-Haqq (BCMA) on July 23.

Scientific Prostration and its benefits By Ghulshan Alani “O you who believe! As-Saum-Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that ye may learn restraint”. Quran 2:183. The Blessed month of Ramadaan is the 9th. Lunar month of the Islamic calendar, one of the most important sacred months in which the last ‘Testament’ the closing Divine Revelation the Al-Quran (continuation of previous revelations) was revealed by Angel Gabriel (Jibrael) to the Universal Prophet Muhammad s.a.s 1432 yrs ago, in the specific night called Lailat-ul Qadr, the night of Power and Destiny, which falls

among the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadaan: 21,23,25,27,29. One cannot pick and choose to establish one of these nights as special night, since God is the legislator and has already established the ‘Law’ that is pure, perfect, and accurate and free from contradictions: consequently, HIS law cannot be violated nor be tempered with HIS system. Fasting in the month of Ramadaan is one of the 5 major commandments of GOD-Allah-Creator (Quran 2.183,185). Fasting was prescribed to mankind in the early monotheist religions and is known to mankind since ancient times.

Consequently, without belief in One Creator-GOD, one wouldn’t comprehend the meaning of divine Revelation, HIS commandments and its obedience, and without prostrating and Praying to HIM 5 times a day, fasting holds no merit, and it would become a mere painful hunger, it would be like building a feather-house, which would blow up with one light blow of wind; and one cannot obtain the benefit of moral and spiritual strength from fasting until the person who keeps fast is conscious of its purpose and allows it to permeate his heart and dominate his thoughts, motives and deeds.

Preparing for the Month of Mercy

By: Maryam Amir-Ebrahimi A lot of us yearn to prepare for Ramadan, but we have no idea how to start. Below are a few tips to insha’Allah (Allah willing) help prepare our minds and hearts for this upcoming Month of Mercy. Make the Intention Simple to do, with a powerful impact. Maybe you want to prepare for Ramadan, but between school, work, family, and your other activities, you just have no idea how to fit in ‘prepare for Ramadan’ time. Instead of separating ‘prepare for Ramadan’ from your daily activities, make your daily activities a MEANS of preparation for Ramadan. For example, perhaps your mom asked you to pick up your brother from school on the day you finally had time to read a few extra pages of Qur’an. Instead of feeling upset as if you have lost a great opportunity to prepare for Ramadan, make the intention that you are picking up your brother to please Allah and prepare for Ramadan by obeying your mother, helping your family members, building ties of kinship...and the list continues. The point is that preparing for Ramadan does not have to be some magnificent, enormous, extra-special thing that needs to be done at a certain time of the day. Many of your daily actions can be turned into Ramadan preparation actions with a sincere intention insha’Allah. Do these Easy-to-Reap-Reward Actions 1. Ask Allah to forgive your brothers and sisters. “Whoever seeks forgiveness for believing men and believing women, Allah will write for him a good deed for each believing man and believing woman.” [at-Tabarani, classed as hasan by al-Albani] 2. It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah radi allahu `anhu (may Allah be pleased with him) said “The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Whoever says subhan Allah wa bi hamdih (praise and glory be to Allah) 100 times, morning and evening, his sins will be erased even if they are like the foam on the sea.” [Bukhari, Muslim] 3. If a person says, “Subhan Allah (glory be to Allah),” 100 times, a thousand good deeds are recorded for him and a thousand bad deeds are wiped away. [Muslim 2073] 4. Remember Allah when you go shopping. “Whoever enters a market and says: “Laa ilaha illallah wahdahu la shareeka lah, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu yuhyi wa yumeetu wa huwa hayyun laa yamoot, bi yadihil khair, wa huwa ‘ala kulli shayin qadeer.” [There is nothing worthy of worship except Allah, alone without partner, to Him belongs dominion and praise; He causes life and death and He is the Living and does not die; in His Hand is all the good, and He is over all things competent] Allah will write for them a million good deeds and erase a million bad deeds and raise him a million levels.” [at-Tirmidhi, classed as hasan by al-Albani] Up Your Worship To help condition your heart for this blessed month, intensify your worship before Ramadan begins. Just a small, consistent amount is enough. The Prophet told us: “The deeds most loved by Allah are those done regularly, even if they are small.” (Bukhari, Muslim) For example, say I always pray 2 rak`at (units )of sunnah (compulsory prayer) after ishaa’ (the night prayer) from this day until Ramadan begins-and even through Ramadan, let me make the intention that I

will now pray 2 extra rak`at of sunnah after ishaa’. And every time I pray these extra 2 rak`at, which are more than what I normally pray, let me remember that I am doing these with the intention of asking Allah to help me be prepared to strive and exert my utmost effort during Ramadan. Make a Du`a’ (prayer) List Today This is THE MONTH to ask for EVERYTHING, both related to this life and the Next. Let us not wait until the last 10 nights to make special du`a’, and then once `Eid passes realize that we completely forgot about fifty other things we needed to make du`a’ for. Let’s start making our lists now, and add to it as more things come our way. Insha’Allah this should help us remember to make constant du`a’ in this month where dua`a’ is accepted, and help our hearts pour out to the One Who can make those du`a’ happen. Write out Your Objectives for Ramadan Praying all of your fard (obligatory) prayers? Praying all of your sunnahs? Reading the entire Qur’an? Giving $1 in charity a day? Making itikaaf (a time for reflection and prayer in seclusion) in the masjid? Leaving one serious sin that you’ve been trying to get away from for some time now? Sincerely turning back to Allah ? Write out a list, put it somewhere you will see it, and make du`a’ for your success in fulfilling your objectives. Make a Plan! Look at your objectives and try to plan out how to realize them in this month. For example, perhaps you are really struggling to pray your sunnah prayers. In this month, realize the enormity of the ajr (reward) of praying the sunnah prayers. Think that perhaps these sunnah will be the deeds that will be heavy on your scale of good deeds when you are intensely in need of them-on Yawm al-Qiyamah, the Day of Judgment. Therefore, fight to keep doing them all throughout Ramadan. If you can’t pray your 2 rak`at after dhuhr (the afternoon prayer) right away, make sure to do them as soon as you get the chance. Your plan might look something like this: Objective: Pray all of my fardh prayers. Method: Envision myself on the Day of Judgment seeing the weight of praying my sunnah consistently during this month. Make sure to pray sunnah immediately after salah (prayer). If I cannot, do it as soon as the opportunity arises-don’t let myself put it off! Another example is that of finishing the Qur’an: Objective: Finish the entire Qur’an in this month. Method: Read 4 pages of the Qur’an after every salah. 5 prayers X 4 pages = 20 pages. 20 pages= about 1 juz. 1 juz X 30= the entire Qur’an. So many Muslims have passed away since last month. So many people have not made it to Ramadan this year. Last year was their very last Ramadan. Will you make it to this Ramadan? Will this be your last Ramadan? Aim to strive this Ramadan. With a very small amount of effort, such as just making a small intention or adding a few extra acts of worship, we pray that Allah will help our hearts soften and honor us with making it easy to turn to Him and open up to Him. May Allah make us of the successful in Ramadan, and make it easy for us to turn to Him completely and perpetually. Ameen. Source: SuhaibWebb - Maryam AmirEbrahimi

Families enjoy a fun day at Richmond Mosque In what’s become a summer tradition for the lower mainland’s Muslim community, over 400 people took part in the annual Family Fun Day at Richmond’s Jami’a Mosque on Saturday July 16th.The weather was not in favor of display fun and games in a open field till noon, but the afternoon turned out to be very pleasant, allowing families to enjoy games, BBQ and more food with their kids . The event, which started over 9 years ago

to raise money for the original Burnaby Mosque Construction Project was organized this year by the RCMP’s Youth Advisory group, working together with the BCMA’s Burnaby-New Westminster-TriCities Branch and Women’s Chapter, and Youth in Motion. The highlight of the day was the presence The RCMP’s as Richmond’s community policing unit, along with Fire Fighter Truck. The parents were excited to show

theirs children the operations of the RCMP Patrolling vehicle and Fire Truck mechanism. Meanwhile, the Women’s Chapter also held a very successful Bazaar Sale at Foyer outside the multi-purpose hall, featuring Islamic clothing, jewelry and other items. In Multipurpose hall, enternatinment activities and games were arranged in which many kids participated and had fun. All the rides and games, including bouncy castles and a toddler play centre, sumo

wrestling, rock climbing, attracted a lot of people. Henna application was another popular feature, along with face painting. One of the most popular attractions was the pony ride, which is a Family Fun Day staple. Three beautiful ponies were on the field, for kids to ride. Everyone, kids and adults alike, left the event smiling with a strengthened family bond.

Fusion of Diversity a huge hit at Surrey Festival

The Fifth Fusion Festival took place in Holland Park Surrey on July 16th and 17th with its greatest turnout yet. In Surrey Fusion Festival, the multicultural celebrations with many international pavilions celebrated music, food and culture. 3-stages of entertainment with headline performers on the World Music Stage and the Celebrations dance stage Festival brought together many distinct cultural heritages represented by ethnic and community groups. These groupos also hosted pavilions to present the music, food, costume and dance of their country of origin. The festival provided visitors with variety of performances, cuisines and handicrafts from all over the world. The festival combined entertainment with an important reminder of the cultural

mosaic present in British Columbia. Its success is a testament to the Canadian national identity of multiculturalism which communities in British Columbia celebrated at this event. City of Surrey Mayor Dianne L. Watts and local MPs, MLAs, City Councilors and many other dignitaries were on the stage on the afternoon of July 16th when the opening ceremony took place on a huge Stage in front of a large crowd. MPs Jinny Sims and Jasbir Sidhu, MLAs Sue Hammell, Bruce Ralston and Harry Bains from NDP, MLA Dave Hayer from BC Liberals, Mr.Ijaz Chattha, School Trustee of City of Surrey and many other city officials joined Mayor Watts on the stage. A beautiful Parade of all participating coun-

tries took place in which kids and adults waved flags of different countries with some displaying country names on their hands. An impressive presentation was also made by First Nations which attracted a lot of people. First nation people presentation was also an attractive part of this festival/ On this mostly rainy and a bit sunny July weekend, Pakistan was a strong contender among the popular pavilions at the event. Like rest of the 50 + cultural pavilions at the festival, the Pakistani pavilion, arranged by the Pakistani Youth Council (PYC), boasted the food, clothing and artisanship of Pakistan. Throughout the two-day festival a constant flux of hungry visitors lined up for delicious chicken and kebabs that were being freshly barbequed at the

Pakistan pavilion. Members of the community not only got to taste Pakistani food, but also got a chance to have henna designs done. Waseem Javed with other youth members of this youth council, as well as families of Mr. Muhammad Afzal and Mr. Ihsan Sheikh, and others put in hours of hard work to ensure that their pavilion was a success. Other notable pavilions representing Muslim nations included Pakistan’s neighbour, both geographically and at the festival –Afghanistan as well as Palestine and Indonesia. and Fijian. The Muslim community of Fiji was also represented well at the festival with a beautiful stall and halal food being served by Mr. Jalil Khan of Sizzling Pizza and his family.

Debt And Deficit financing Quagmire

By Tariq Mian, Toronto Rampantly flourishing corruption is fast turning into mega corruption almost in all countries/societies - differing only in the level of degree. Not alarming enough, as almost each one of us behaves so naively that the root cause of the problem continues to stay unnoticed, which is more frustrating of course. Historically speaking, the age-old debt trap introduced by the loan sharks is the main culprit for spreading other unethical diseases around. In fact, the financial state we are in today is the “by product” of unfair indebtedness - at individual, local or global level. Obviously, lenders from lower level have progressed to higher levels and having been re-classified as financial institutions they work day and night to earn money through borrowing from any source to do the lending business with a purpose of earning interest income left and right. Tricky Debt system is the creation of the loan sharks of the past, who eventually became more sophisticated machines of milking money. Most troubling is the “the needy’s desperation” to get loan at whatever cost - depending on the nature of urgency or lack of qualifying for the loan due to missing collateral. But, the blindfolded poor fellow signs the deal silently when it comes to borrowing under desperation. Unaware of the dire repercussions of such loans, the borrowers’ troubles are endless indeed. Most of the countries are facing debt crises today, as recently, a rescue package was given to Athens from euro zone governments and International Monetary Fund. And a range of some other austerity measures have put some brakes on the growth across the region. Also, Pres Obama, during the deficit discussions, has been warning the Americans about economic doomsday - if the country defaults on its debt, therefore, credit limit needs be increased to fulfil its promised obligations

- meaning more borrowed dollars to pay for legally binding obligations. In fact, deficit and budget quagmire is not easy to handle. With regard to Italian loans to Pakistan, the former has agreed to waive latter’s total bilateral debt by swapping half of it for expenditure incurred on Afghan refugees, while the remaining amount of debts of $26.52 million and 58.74 million euros will be swapped for the jointly-agreed social and developmental projects under Debt for Development Swap Agreement in 2006. Pakistan’s total external debt amounted to $58.393 billion at the end of December 2010 while official liquid reserves of the country stood at $14.126 billion in the same quarter (October-December) of the last year. In Canada, the size of the overall external debt had reached $58.698 billion during the third quarter (July-September) The total debt in Canada is 4.599 trillion$ and the nominal GDP is 1.622 trillion (according to the Canada Budget 2011 document). The total debt to GDP is 283% of the year 2010. Canadians generally have taken advantage of the country’s historically low interest rates to borrow cash at advantageous terms. But, experts have begun ringing the alarm bell regarding higher debt levels for individuals. As Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney warned in a recent speech that Canadians had debt including mortgages (valued at 150 % of disposable income). This is quite worrisome. In many countries, Public services are being slashed and public assets are being sold off to balance budgets that can’t be balanced because the money supply itself has shrunk. Governments usually get the blame for excessive spending, but governments did not actually initiate the crisis. The flaw is in the banking system and in the credit system which is responsible for creating and sustaining. Admittedly, there is big problem of excessive deficit financing for which there is no repay-

ment plan and that is pushing the world to the most destructive economic tsunami. Furthermore, Inflationary pressure is fast turning into hyperinflation, which is really deadly for the economies based on fake values. By deficit spending means spending the borrowed money or newly printed bills/notes as legal tender with a fake face value. The result: Beyond control price hikes of goods and services adding to economic hardship for the public and the governments in adversely affected regions. Particularly, when people are unable to earn enough money to pay their bills. Coming back to the market manipulators who control the borrowers. It’s all about loan sharks community of yesterday, which has succeeded in becoming bankers of today. Surprisingly, these loan sharks are the major source of the world’s financial woes. Even the Haves are no longer in charge of the money machine they created. They have set into motion, forces over which they have no control any more. And the financial dealers/wheelers have further sophisticated the system of exploitation to their advantage in order to steer the economy accordingly - but at the cost of the entire system which is about to go down. Actual trick of the trade is through borrowing money at lower interest rate to produce goods and services or for lending to sub borrowers at a higher interest rate. However, some experts are of the opinion that it’s a legal variation of the illegal pyramid scam. Furthermore, the astonishing scenario shows that the manipulators have approved questionable loans. They borrow huge sums for high-risk investments which is doomed for one reason or the other. That’s how they rip off billions of dollars and they just walk away from the collapsing companies. It’s so true about the manipulators for they are good at tackling the Rules skilfully in order to milk billions of dollars from corporate

retirement funds. Surely, without major changes soon, the system is about to self-destruct. In other words, big money lenders have succeeded in manipulating the laws and have legalized some very shady deals for themselves. For example, the illegal, 1930’s-style loan sharking became legal and is now the property of the financial industry. Loan sharking was considered a serious crime and those caught went to jail. Today, that former criminal activity is legal. The criminals of the past have taken over the government, changed the laws and declared themselves to be immune from prosecution in many countries. Nevertheless, it’s still illegal for you as an individual to charge any interest over 10%, but some corporations are now charging as much as 100% interest and that’s perfectly legal. Credit card companies commonly charge you up to 30% or even more in certain cases. In fact, most of the money today is not created by governments; it is created by private banks as loans. The private system of money creation has grown so powerful over the centuries that it has come to dominate governments globally. Under the flawed system, the banks advance “BANK CREDIT” repayable with interest, continually requiring more money to be repaid than was created as loans; and the only way to get additional money from the private banking system is to take out yet more loans, at interest. Partial Remedy: All governments must control unnecessary administrative expenses through downsizing and minimizing military adventures via encouraging “peace process” throughout the globe. The banking system needs to be evolved fair enough to accommodate the changes to encourage financial empowerment of “the endangered middle class.” Governments of the countries should start narrowing down the wide gap between “the haves and the have nots,” so that debt dependence is automatically minimised to some reasonable extent.

Eating healthy in Ramadan

With the fast of Ramadan upon us, we thought it might be useful to look at ways of trying to maintain a healthy diet while fasting. Fasting for 12 to 24 hours or more can lead to dizziness and fatigue and a lowering of meta-

bolic rate as a means of conserving calories or energy. Here are some simple guidelines to make sure that your diet remains balanced and healthy during this fasting period: Don’t skip breakfast (Sahoor)! Even though the thought of sleep may be far more appealing than waking up to force down some food, don’t skip breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. For years, research has shown that breakfast (the breaking of the overnight fast) provides the essential nutrients and energy needed for concentration while keeping hunger symptoms like headaches, fatigue, sleepiness and restlessness at bay. In addition, it also gets our metabolic rates up and going - it is therefore vital to ensure an adequate intake at breakfast time. Eat a wide variety of foods Especially now, when your daily intake is limited to two meals per day, you need to put extra effort into including foods from all the food groups. Our bodies need at least 40 different nutrients

every day to ensure that we grow adequately and maintain good health. Although most foods contain more than one nutrient, no single food provides all the necessary nutrients. Moreover, foods have benefits that can’t be replicated by a pill. It is thus important to eat a wide variety of foods every day, so as to ensure that we get all of these nutrients. The way to ensure variety, and with it a wellbalanced diet, is to select foods each day from each of the five food groups: • Breads, cereals and other grain products • Fruit and vegetables • Meat, fish and poultry • Milk, cheese and yoghurt • Fats and sugars (these contain very little nutrients and are high in calories and therefore their intake should be limited). • Use low glycemic foods at breakfast to help control blood sugar levels Carbohydrates are now classified according to their glucose response or glycemic index (GI). The GI measures how fast the carbohydrate of a particular food is converted to glucose and enters the bloodstream. It therefore tells you which carbohydrate foods satisfy hunger for longer. The lower the number of the GI, the slower the food is converted to sugar and the better it is. Selecting low GI foods therefore helps maintain normal blood sugar control, minimizes hunger pangs and satisfies appetite without providing excess calories. Also, by controlling blood sugar levels, you prevent excessive eating binges as a result of low blood sugar levels. Remember to include low GI foods at each meal, and to avoid eating high GI foods on their own, but rather to

STRESS - The Good & The Bad By: Shabnam Khan Family Counsellor Stress is a natural and essential part of life. Our stress response is designed to protect and preserve our lives. We need a certain amount of stress in our lives but not too much for too long. Our bodies are constantly responding to positive and negative stress. Positive stress motivates and drives us. Often we get excited about working on a new project at work, moving to a new city, changing our careers and so on. Negative stress affects our physical and mental health and can rob us from experiencing true happiness. Every individual has

potential and each of us has passions which we have never explored! The main reason that we don’t reach out for our potential in our lives is because of our fears. If you want to experience living an intentional life of true happiness, you can’t run from stress or avoid it. Stress is part of our daily life as breathing, eating and drinking water. Stress is constant in our lives. There is a reason for stress.Stress discovers our dark places and bring them out for attention. Each stress that we perceive as an obstacle is actually an opportunity. You know what consequences there are if you neglect a wound or a sore. It gets worse and can eventually

mix them with low GI foods, which will give an intermediate GI overall. Be aware of your cooking methods By making small changes in your cooking habits, you can create great tasting foods that are also healthy for you. Although special recipes are an important part of family tradition, many of those treasured favorites have too high a fat content for today’s generation of health-conscious cooks. You do not have to give up those old favorites - convert them! Here’s how: Always trim off all excess fat from before cooking or use veal, venison, chicken and soya as lower fat options. Remove poultry skin before or after cooking. Choose light meat (breast) instead of dark meat (leg, wing). Cut down on fat: • Cook onions in a small amount of water or even vegetable stock rather than oil or butter. • Use non-stick frying pans and non-stick sprays (like Spray ‘n Cook) rather than oil or margarine if frying. • Bake, grill or roast foods rather than frying. • Cook roasted meat or poultry on a wire rack so that the fat can drip off. • Vegetables should be steamed or boiled with as little cream or margarine as possible. • When preparing rice, noodles and other grains, season with herbs, spices and broths rather than added fat. • Prepare soups, gravies and sauces in advance, so that they can be refrigerated and the layer of fat that forms on top removed. • Experiment with herbs and spices to add flavor and zest to low-fat cooking. Herbs, such as basil, bay leaf, oregano, or rosemary adds distinctive flavors and colors to meat and vegetables. Spices, like cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg enhance the sweet taste of foods, and seasoning blends, such as chili powder, curry powder provide a complex array of flavors. Avoid taking in too much salt cost you your life! Stress will get worse if you ignore it and don’t respect the gift it is offering you. Denying stress, like denying a wound, can make you worse on spiritual, psychological and physical levels. The situational or acute stress can shift into chronic, continual unabated stress. Stress is your guide and can be quite a gift. Try to observe what stresses you. Then try to embrace your stress and be compassionate with yourself. Sometimes clients tend to be so hard on themselves. They keep blaming themselves for everything that’s not being as should be. These individuals often feel victimized and overwhelmed by the stress in their lives. The more we live in denial or running away from our stress, the more insidious ways our stress will discover to get our attention. You can run away from stress for a while but it will eventually find a way to get your at-

• Use garlic, dry mustard, pepper, onions, mushrooms and tomatoes to add flavor to meat and vegetables. • Add sliced lemon or lemon juice to white meats and fish. • Use herbs and spices instead Make healthy changes to recipes Use your regular recipes, but start cutting the fat in half. If a recipe calls for cream or whole milk, use evaporated or fresh skim milk. If a recipe calls for a whole egg, use two egg whites, etc. Eat enough fiber-rich carbs These foods provide the body with energy. They are often incorrectly labeled as fattening and unnecessarily limited. They are rich in vitamins belonging to the B group, and are an excellent source of fiber. Bear in mind that hi-fiber foods have a greater effect on satiety than their low-fiber counterparts. Examples of foods high in fiber include brown rice, wholegrains, fresh fruit and raw veggies. Remember your fruits and vegetables Fruit and vegetables add color and variety to the menu. They are often termed our ‘protective’ foods as they help the body fight off sickness and disease. This is because they are rich sources of a variety of vitamins and minerals. An added benefit is that they are relatively low in calories and also contribute to our daily fiber intake. Drink sufficient fluid Always include water in your diet and limit your intake of caffeine-containing beverages. Caffeine is a diuretic and will not provide adequate hydration. We all know that maintaining a balanced diet by eating healthily has a vital influence on your well being. Try following the above principles so that this fast period does not sway too much from the principles of good nutrition. Source: iAfrica.com South Africa tention. Hasselbeck leaving Seahawks, Jackson in

Tarvaris Jackson is in as the Seattle Seahawks next quarterback and Matt Hasselbeck is reportedly looking elsewhere. A person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press Tuesday that Jackson has agreed to terms with the Seahawks and is expected to sign a contract Friday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because free agents aren’t allowed to sign contracts until Friday. The Seattle Times first reported Jackson’s agreement. Reports surfaced Tuesday afternoon that the Seahawks told Hasselbeck he was no longer in their future plans. Yahoo! Sports first reported the Hasselbeck decision on Twitter. Hasselbeck and his agent did not return messages left by the AP. The decision to move on from Hasselbeck contradicted Seattle coach Pete Carroll’s pronouncement in January that re-signing Hasselbeck was Seattle’s No. 1 priority. The two sides could not reach an agreement before the NFL lockout. Hasselbeck spent the past 10 seasons in Seattle and for much of that time was the face of the franchise. He took the Seahawks to their only Super Bowl appearance and captained Seattle to five division titles. He

leaves as the team’s all-time leader in numerous passing categories. But the signs that Hasselbeck’s time in Seattle could be coming to a close started a year ago when the team acquired Charlie Whitehurst from San Diego. Whitehurst was supposed to challenge Hasselbeck for the job before the 2010 season, but his only two starts last season came in games Hasselbeck was injured. One of those starts was the season finale when Seattle beat St. Louis 16-6 to wrap up the NFC West title with a 7-9 record. Hasselbeck then seemed to affirm his importance to the franchise by leading Seattle to a stunning NFC first-round playoff upset of New Orleans before the Seahawks lost to Chicago in the NFC divisional playoff. After that loss, Carroll said the Seahawks’ No. 1 priority was re-signing Hasselbeck. But it won’t be Hasselbeck back under center when the season begins on Sept. 11 at San Francisco. Whitehurst was one of the first Seahawks to arrive at their training facility on Tuesday morning after catching a late flight back to the Northwest and not getting to his apartment until about 1 a.m. Still, he was driving through the gates of Seahawks

headquarters shortly after 8 a.m. ready to pick up his playbook. Instead of Whitehurst battling Hasselbeck for the starting job, it’ll be Jackson. Later in the day, after learning the reports of Hasselbeck’s departure, Whitehurst seemed to realize his chance. “It’s as good an opportunity as I’m going to get and I’m looking forward to it,” he said. In Minneapolis, Jackson was ushered aside most of the last two seasons in favor of Brett Favre. Now he’ll get a fresh start in Seattle and be reunited with offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, who is in charge of revamping Seattle’s passing game. Bevell spent the previous five seasons as Minnesota’s offensive coordinator. Rust might be a problem for Jackson. He’s played in just 11 games and started only once the past two seasons after making 17 starts during the 2007 and ‘08 seasons. The Seahawks also agreed to terms with 19 undrafted free agents on Tuesday. Highlighting the list was Boise State safety Jeron Johnson, Nebraska safety Rickey Thenarse and Nebraska defensive end Pierre Allen. Source: Sports Illustrated

Turkish club trying to lure Bryant during lockout Los Angeles Lakers All-Star guard Kobe Bryant’s representatives will meet with officials of Turkish club Besiktas next week to discuss the possibility of him playing in Turkey during the National Basketball Association (NBA) lockout. Seref Yalcin, head of basketball operations for Besiktas, told reporters in Turkey he was hopeful of landing the five-time NBA champion and Olympic gold medalist. “At the moment there’s a 50 per cent chance that Kobe may come to Turkey,” Yalcin was quoted as saying. “Everything will be clearer after the meeting on the (July) 30th.” Besiktas already has signed New Jersey Nets guard Deron Williams to play during the lockout and last year signed former NBA MVP Allen Iverson. Bryant has not confirmed his plans but has said he would be interested in playing in either Turkey or China if the NBA season was delayed because of the lockout. He already has an endorse-

ment deal with Turkish Airlines. The 13-time All-Star, 32, has three years remaining on his Lakers’ contract and Yalcin said Besiktas, which begins play in October, had asked the international basketball federation for its approval of any Bryant deal. “Kobe wants some time to think about it,” Yalcin said. “We believe that his response is going to be positive. Money will not be a problem.” Other NBA players also have expressed interest in playing overseas during the lockout and the players’ union has encouraged athletes to make the trip while there is no basketball in the NBA. NBA owners locked out the players on July 1 after the talks failed on a new collective bargaining agreement. Both sides are far apart and no new negotiations have been scheduled, leading to possibility all or part of the 2011-12 season could be canceled. Source: Reuters

Jack : Continued from pg 1 Democrats lay at the feet of the man who has been their Leader for the past eight years. He began experiencing stiffness and pain during the final days of the spring parliamentary session and underwent a battery of tests at Toronto’s Princess Margaret Hospital. After the results came back last week, Mr. Layton spent several days consulting with his family and his chief of staff, Anne McGrath, before deciding to allow an interim leader to take charge, if only for a couple of months. Brian Topp, the president of the federal New Democrats, said he emerged from a canoe trip in Algonquin Park on Sunday to find dozens of messages on his cellphone, many of them marked urgent. He called Mr. Layton immediately. By that time, “he was quite clear in his mind about what he wanted to do. He wanted the decks cleared so he could take on this new challenge,” said Mr. Topp who, like other senior officials in his party, was clearly dispirited by the news. But Mr. Layton stepped aside reluctantly. He believes he is just a step away from the Prime Minister’s Office and does not want to be deterred, said Mr. Topp. Mr. Layton’s illness is a serious situation for the New Democrats and a tough test for the caucus, said Mr. Topp. “Life is unfair sometimes and this is very un-

fair,” he said. When he was diagnosed with prostate cancer a year and a half ago, the NDP Leader was forthcoming about the disease. This time he is keeping the exact nature of his affliction private. It is not prostate cancer, he said. He added that his prostate cancer is no longer a problem. Princess Margaret Hospital released a statement saying only that “recently, new tumours were discovered which appear to be unrelated to the original cancer and Mr. Layton is now being treated for this cancer.” If this is an entirely new disease, his chances for recovery are better than if the prostate cancer has spread to other parts of his body. Mr. Layton took over the party after it had slumped to 8.5 per cent of the popular vote in 2000. He set the NDP finances on solid footing as he increased the party’s presence in the House. The recent election took the New Democrats from a paltry 37 seats in the Commons to 103 – and shocked pundits with a jaw-dropping surge in Quebec, where the NDP had wallowed on the political fringe since its inception. Khan is ready to take on Mayweather

Trainer Freddie Roach believes Amir Khan is already among the top 10 boxers in the world – and insists the Bolton man would beat Floyd Mayweather if the pair fought right now. Khan added the IBF light welterweight belt to his WBA title by stopping Zab Judah in the fifth round of their unification bout in Las

Vegas on Saturday. The 24-year-old’s performance was so impressive that Roach thinks he is now good enough to become the first boxer ever to defeat Mayweather, even if a fight between the pair is unlikely to take place until late 2012 at the earliest. But Khan has set his sights on becoming the best pound-forpound boxer on the planet in the future and his legendary trainer, who has also masterminded the career of Manny Pacquiao, thinks he is already among the best in the world. “He’s definitely top 10,” said Roach. “He fought a great disciplined fight against Judah. “Mayweather’s a whole different style and the gameplan would be a lot different. “He’s clever, he’s more of a counterpuncher than Judah and you have to recognise when he sets the traps. “Every fight

is preparation, the right gameplan is the key but there’s no doubt in my mind that he could beat Mayweather today. Give us 10 weeks and we’ll do it. “Speed is the greatest asset in the world and when you have speed and power it’s a very dangerous thing, as long as you use it in the best way possible and that’s what Amir’s doing.” Despite the confidence of Roach, however, Khan’s promoters insist they would turn down any offer to fight Mayweather early next year – because they want to be sure he is ready to beat the American rather than merely collect a pay day. Mayweather last week refused to rule out a match-up against Khan and wants to fight again in February after his September comeback fight against Victor Ortiz. But Richard Schaefer, of Khan’s US promoters Golden Boy, insists the plan is for the Bolton boxer to take on Mayweather at the end of 2012 and they would reject any offer for a fight earlier than that. Schaefer said: “I think the plan would be for Amir to fight first at 147lbs against somebody else in the UK. “That would be against a difficult opponent because Amir is not going to fight a tune-up fight at 147, that’s just not Amir. “He’s going to fight a real guy at 147, make himself familiar at 147 and then go for the ultimate prize. “The whole idea is to beat Mayweather and I really think Amir has the youth. “Amir is going to go for that in the prime of his career. When Amir is going to be in his prime, tell me who can challenge him?” Source: Bolton News
