NDP ahead of Tories in Canadawide poll as Liberals struggle
Happy 145th Canada Day Best Wishes to all on this occasion from the Miracle and Advertisers CANADA DAY EDITION
The federal New Democratic Party has become the leading choice among Canadian voters — especially those in Ontario and Quebec — as the most favoured party to govern the country, a major new poll has found. The national survey commissioned by Postmedia News and Global TV also reveals that Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Tories are slipping in popularity and the once-powerful Liberals are continuing to wane. Ultimately, the poll conducted this week by Ipsos Reid reveals a historic shift in political allegiances, as a growing consensus forms around the NDP among those Canadians who would like to see Harper’s Tories removed from office. According to the poll, which asked Canadians who they would vote for if an election occurred today, the NDP under Thomas Mulcair would receive 38 per cent of the popular vote, up three points since last month. (That’s also well up from the 2011 election, when the NDP finished second with 31 per cent of the vote.) The governing Tories would receive 35 per cent of the vote, down two points since last month (and also down from the 40 per cent they attained to win a majority government last year.) Support for the Liberal party, now heading into an unpredictable leadership race that won’t include its current leader Bob Rae, is also shaky. The party would get 18 per cent of the vote, down one point from its showing in the 2011 election. The Green party would receive about four per cent of the vote. And the Bloc Quebecois, once powerful in its province, is now running second to the NDP there. Ipsos Reid president Darrell Bricker said in an interview Friday that the findings are part of a significant trend which shows Canadians are becoming more polarized around key issues such as the economy, the role of government, and taxes. He said left-wing, “progressive” voters are now coalescing around the political voice that offers the strongest opposition to Harper’s government. Bricker said the trend is reminiscent of the 2004 election, when conservative voters stopped splitting their vote between the Canadian Alliance and Progressive Conservatives — thereby making it harder for the Liberals to stay firmly in power. Particularly worrisome for Harper’s party, he said, is that support for the NDP is not only strong in Quebec, but has also skyrocketed in Ontario, where there are many ridings. The poll found

Pakistan’s new PM Pervez Ashraf in trouble
Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Wednesday gave the new prime minister two weeks to indicate whether he would ask Swiss authorities to reopen corruption cases against the president. The move indicates that the judiciary is unwilling to end a showdown with the government that could force elections before February 2013, when the administration would become the first in Pakistan to
complete a full five-year mandate. The court on June 19 dismissed Yousuf Raza Gilani as prime minister after convicting him of contempt in April for refusing to reopen the multi-million-dollar cases. The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) coalition elected Raja Pervez Ashraf as prime minister on Friday, after judges issued an arrest warrant for its first suggested replacement. Five days later, Justice Nasir ul Mulk directed the attorney-general to find out how the government intended to deal with the Swiss cases and report back on July 12. ‘The new prime minister was elected last week and we trust that he will honour the direction given by this court,’ Mulk said. ‘In the meantime we direct the attorney-general to obtain instructions from the prime minister and inform the court... on the next date of the hearing on July 12,’ he said. The allegations against President Zardari date back to the 1990s, when he and his late wife, former premier Benazir Bhutto, are suspected of using Swiss bank accounts to launder $12 million allegedly paid in bribes by companies seeking customs inspection contracts.

Pakistan troops ‘beheaded’ near Afghan border Seven Pakistani soldiers were beheaded by fighters who crossed over from Afghanistan, the Pakistani army has said, amid ongoing gun battles in the border region. Several other soldiers were also missing, the army said on Monday, and none of the bodies had been recovered yet. Pakistan claimed that more than 100 fighters entered Upper Dir, a district in northwest Pakistan, after crossing from neighbouring Kunar province in Afghanistan. The military had already reported six soldiers killed in gun battles with fighters on Sunday. The Pakistani government lodged a protest over the raid with NATO and Afghan forces, accusing them of failing to act against fighters’ safe havens in Afghanistan. The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan said it was aware of the report, but had no further information. General John Allen, the ISAF commander, is due to visit
Pakistan later this week, a trip that could focus on improving tense relations between the two sides. ‘Safe havens’ on both sides Intelligence officials blamed the attack on followers of Maulvi Fazlullah, a cleric who fled to Afghanistan after the Pakistani army forced him out of the Swat Valley in a 2009 offensive. He reemerged as a threat last year, when his fighters conducted cross-border raids that killed around 100 Pakistani security forces. Fazlullah Wahidi, the governor of Kunar province, said the assailants were based in Pakistan, not Afghanistan. “We don’t have any information about militants crossing the border from Afghnaistan to attack troops in Pakistan,” he told the Reuters news agency. Pakistan wants Afghan and NATO forces to act against armed groups based in Afghanistan. The US has called on Pakistan to

Extradition tests Tunisia’s ruling coalition
Tunisia’s president has rebuked the prime minister for allowing a close associate of late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to be extradited to Libya, prompting fears of a split in the ruling coalition. Government ministers allied with the prime minister, Hamadi Jebali, have defended him, saying the extradition was within the prime minister’s powers. The case exposes the tenuous nature of the power-sharing agreement in Tunisia’s ruling coalition, which consists of the Islamist Ennahda party that won the most seats in parliament and two secular parties. Jebali is from the Ennahda, while President Moncef Marzouki is from the liberal Congress for
the Republic. Marzouki said Jebali overstepped his authority when he ordered the extradition of Al-Baghdadi Ali alMahmoudi, Gaddafi’s last prime minister, to Libya where he is wanted for alleged crimes. Marzouki, a former human rights campaigner, had opposed the extradition on grounds that Al-Mahmoudi might not get a fair trial in Libya, and his life could be in danger. “Extradition has more to do with Tunisia’s foreign policy than the judiciary, and foreign policy is the prerogative of the president of the republic,” he said in a statement conveyed by his spokesman, Adnan Mancer, late on Monday. “It was an illegitimate decision taken unilaterally.” In a press conference, Samir Dilou, human rights minister, and Nourreddine Bhiri, justice minister, supported the prime minister’s move. “It was purely technical and administrative operation following the judicial, legal and constitutional procedures,” Dilou, who is also the government spokesman, said. Bhiri said that the presidency “did not have the right to accept or refuse extraditions” a power he said belonged to the cabinet. The two ministers are both from Jebali’s Ennahda party. Mahmoudi, who was Libyan prime minister until the last days of the Gaddafi regime, was arrested on September 21 in Tunisia as he tried to flee to Algeria. Two Tunisian court decisions backed Libya’s request to extradite him, but Marzouki had said in May he was opposed to the transfer unless Libya could guarantee it would respect Mahmoudi’s rights and give him a fair trial. The extradition could establish a precedent for other countries
who have given refuge to or arrested members of Gaddafi’s old entourage. Libya’s government and the International Criminal Court, which indicted Gaddafi’s son Saif al-Islam in June for crimes against humanity stemming from the crackdown on last year’s revolt, have argued for months over where he should be tried. Libya considers it a matter of national pride and a measure of the country’s transformation for Saif al-Islam’s and other Gaddafi loyalists trials to be held in Libya. But human rights groups have questioned whether Libya’s justice system can meet the standards of international law and say he should be handed over to the ICC instead. A Libyan defence ministry official, Mohammed al-Ahwal, said that a helicopter transferred Mahmoudi to the capital, Tripoli. “As a result of the intense diplomatic efforts undertaken by the Libyan interim government ... the Libyan government has received today Al-Baghdadi Ali alMahmudi,” Abdel Rahim al-Kib, prime minister of Libya’s interim government, said on Sunday. “The Libyan government promises that the accused man will be treated well, in accordance with our religious teachings, and in accordance with of international standards of human rights,” he said. Kib said Mahmoudi was being held in a prison under supervision of the ministry of justice and the judiciary police. Earlier on Sunday, Ridha Kazdaghli, a spokesperson for Tunisia’s prime minister, Hamadi Jebali, confirmed Mahmoudi’s transfer to Tripoli. Source: Al-Jazeera
Breivik trial ends as killer demands his acquittal The trial of Anders Behring Breivik ended Friday with the confessed mass killer demanding to be set free and vowing that history would exonerate him for a bomb-and-gun rampage that killed 77 people. The self-styled antiMuslim militant got the final word in the 10-week proceedings, but it’s unclear whether it helped the main point of his defence: trying to prove that he is sane. In a rambling statement, Breivik lashed out at everything he finds wrong with the world, from non-ethnic Norwegians representing the country in the Eurovision Song Contest to the sexually liberated lifestyle of the characters in the American TV show “Sex and the City.” Incorporating current events into his statement, he claimed that fellow right-wing extremists were behind a small amount of explosives found outside a Swedish nuclear plant this week. Swedish police spokesman Tommy Nyman had no comment “especially not if he says it.” While some of Breivik’s comments prompted laughter in the Oslo court, a serious atmosphere returned when he reiterated his motive for bombing the Norwegian capital’s government headquarters, killing eight, and hunting down teenagers at the Labor Party’s youth camp. Sixty-nine people were dead and dozens more injured in one of the worst peacetime shooting massacres by a single gunman. Breivik claims the governing Labor Party has betrayed the country by accepting Muslim immigrants and must be stopped before turning Norway into what he called a “multiculturalist hell.” Earlier Friday, defence lawyer Geir Lippestad had tried to prove his client is sane — the key issue to be resolved in the trial since Breivik admits the attacks. Lippestad also formally entered a plea for acquittal, but it was made out of principle, without any realistic chance of success. Also Friday, relatives of some of those killed tried to put their loss in words. Kirsti Loevlie, whose 30-year-old daughter Hanne was killed by the bomb, moved the court room to tears when she described the shock of finding out her daughter was dead, the grief of cleaning out her room and the first Christmas without her. Still, Loevlie said she felt a need to attend the trial, seeing Breivik in a position where he couldn’t hurt anyone anymore. The court room burst out in applause and audible sobs as she finished her statement. Breivik remained motionless, his face blank. Lippestad tried to prove to the court that Breivik’s claims of being a resistance fighter in a struggle to protect Norway and Europe from being colonized by Muslims are not delusional, but part of a political view shared by other right-wing extremist. When Breivik talks about a civil war he’s not fantasizing about tanks and soldiers in the forest, but referring to a low-intensity struggle he believes will last for 60 years, Lippestad said. Two teams of psychiatrists reached opposite conclusions about Breivik’s mental health. The first team diagnosed him with “paranoid schizophrenia,” a serious mental illness. The second team found him legally sane, saying he suffers from a dissocial and narcissistic personality disorder, but is not psychotic. Prosecutors on Thursday called for an insanity ruling, saying there was enough doubt about Breivik’s mental state to preclude a prison sentence. Source: CBC News

Belgian Political Party Offers 250 Euro Reward for Reporting Face-Veil Ban Violators One of the leading figures of the Flemish populist Vlaams Belang party, Filip Dewinter (pictured), announced that his anti-immigrants party will be offering a €250 reward to anyone who informs the police of women wearing burqas in public. Dewinter stressed that the reward will “force the authorities” to implement the law on burqa prohibition regardless of the recent protests. He stressed that burqa is a “cloth prison for women” and reminded that Belgium has a law prohibiting wearing full-body covering burqas in public. Dewinter continued that a ban in Belgium and France should be the first steps in a European wide ban of the burqa. “We live in a free society. We live in a society where men and women are equal, and Islam has to respect that. So there has to be a burqa ban, and not only in this country but in the whole of Europe I think, because the burqa is the weapon of the radical Islam against the West.” Spokesman of the Brussels metropolitan police said that policemen are implementing the law and added that the police was not informed of the reward offered by the Vlaams Belang. The law stipulates that burqa wearing is punishable by a maximum fine of €150. (It seems odd that the Vlaams Belang party is offering a reward of €100 more than the maximum fine, which allows people to deliberately stage false situations where they can
make an easy profit.) Spokeswomen of the federal police said that legality of the reward is a question for the court and urged citizens who feel affected by these tips to inform the police. The statement received a mixed reaction outside the central mosque in the Belgian capital. Schoolteacher Mrs El Talb told Reuters that religious freedom needed to be respected. “Everyone can do whatever they want when it comes to religious freedom and freedom of speech. Everyone can say whatever they want. This is freedom of speech. He (Dewinter) is allowed to say whatever he wants. And these women can wear it, I don’t mind. Everyone can do whatever they want. Freedom of speech, freedom of religion, I think both need to be respected.” Ramzi Zergane, jokingly, put forward a counter-proposal. I find this proposal stupid, but Filip Dewinter is known for making only stupid proposals. The only way I can react is by giving 2,000 euros to the one who puts a burqa on Filip Dewinter because we just don’t need people like him.” Last week, protests broke out in Brussels after a woman was detained for wearing a burqa. Vlaams Belang, whose xenophobic policies resemble those of Geert Wilders’ Party for Freedom in the Netherlands, used the opportunity to promote their anti-immigrant views. Source: Islam Today

Egypt’s Morsi calls for unity after poll win
Egypt’s president-elec, Mohamed Morsi, is set to building a civilian administration to overcome deep political division, and to coax a mistrustful army into relaxing its grip on power. Behind the scenes, talks were already under way between the Muslim Brotherhood and generals to resolve disputes that blew up this month over steps by the ruling military council to hem in the powers of the first freely elected president Egypt has known. Morsi retains the right to appoint the prime minister and cabinet. He has already begun talks to form a presidential team and cabinet that “would truly represent Egypt after the revolution,” according to a statement on the Brotherhoods’ Twitter account. Morsi claimed victory just hours after last week’s runoff election, based on unofficial numbers tallied by the Brotherhood, but the commission delayed its official announcement until Sunday. In the intervening days, Khairat al-Shater, the Brotherhood’s political boss, met generals from SCAF at least once. Sources say they were negotiating exactly what powers the president will have. Shortly before the polls closed last week, the generals issued a decree sharply limiting the powers of the new president.
It permitted him to declare war, for example, only with the approval of the military council. SCAF will also keep control of legislative power, and the budget, until a new parliament is elected. Egyptians went to the polls in November to elect a legislature, which was dominated by the Freedom and Justice Party, but it was dissolved earlier this month after a high court ruling found parts of the electoral law unconstitutional. Despite Morsi’s victory, many of those questions about his power remain unanswered. Gehad el-Haddad, Morsi’s campaign spokesman, said in an interview shortly after the results were announced that Morsi would work to be a “president for all Egyptians”. Cairo’s Tahrir Square, theatre of the revolution that ousted Hosni Mubarak, exploded in joy - and relief - on Sunday as Morsi was declared the narrow but convincing winner of last weekend’s presidential run-off against Ahmed Shafik, another scion of the military establishment which has ruled Egypt for 60 years. The president-elected delivered a victory address on Sunday night. He spoke on state television, long a medium which demonised him and the Muslim Brotherhood. He thanked the Egyptian people for their votes, calling them “my family” and “my beloved,” and promised to work to “restore their rights. I have no rights, only responsibilities,” Morsi said. “If I do not deliver, do not obey me.” He also reached out to the army, the police, and Egypt’s intelligence services, thanking them for their work in protecting the country, and promised to “preserve” the military. The celebrations continued through an unforgettable night after Morsi won by 3.5 percentage points or some 880,000 votes. Those in Egypt and beyond who feared a win for Shafik might have spelled the end of the Arab Spring acknowledged a triumph for the popular will, and for the army which accepted it. Source: Al-Jazeera
EU ministers urge restraint from Turkey European Union foreign ministers have called for a calm response after Turkey accused Syria of shooting down one of its military reconnaissance planes in international airspace. The call came as the ministers, meeting in Luxembourg on Monday, announced
further sanctions against Syria. The ministers were meeting a day before a NATO meeting requested by Turkey to discuss how to react to Friday’s incident, which Turkey says occurred without warning. Turkey is a member of NATO, but is only a candidate for -membership of the European Union. The ministers added one person and six companies and other entities to a sanctions list following Monday’s meeting, an EU official said. So far, the EU has imposed asset freezes and visa bans on more than 100 people responsible for, or associated with, the violent repression against Syria’s civilian population, and an asset freeze on 43 entities. William Hague, the British foreign secretary, called for increased pressure, but said the jet incident did not fundamentally alter the situation in Syria, where Assad has been suppressing a 16-month revolt against his rule. “I don’t think it illustrates a different phase,” Hague said. “It’s very important that we increase the pressure with additional sanctions. “Other countries will be very active in arguing for a new resolution from the [UN] Security Council.” Russia and China, both
permanent members of the UN Security Council with veto power, have blocked efforts by Western powers to condemn Assad or call for his removal. Laurent Fabius, the French foreign minister, said on Monday that Syria’s downing of the jet was “unacceptable”. Turkey’s cabinet was due to meet on Monday to discuss Friday’s incident. “Turkey has moved into action” the country’s Milliyet and Vatan newspapers declared in headlines under the NATO flag. Sabah newspaper columnist Mehmet Barlas said some were calling Friday’s attack a Syrian declaration of war. “We already know there is an ‘undeclared war’ being carried out between Turkey and Syria,” he said, citing the presence of the Syrian opposition and Syrian refugees sheltering on Turkish soil. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s prime minister, has so far eschewed bellicose rhetoric, and has seemed to back away from any suggestion of an armed response. In calling Tuesday’s meeting he invoked a NATO providing for urgent consultations if a member state considers its security interests threatened. Military intervention in Syria is out of the question,” said Uri Rosenthal, the Dutch foreign minister. “It is not a matter of consideration for the Dutch government. That is also at stake in the ... context of NATO.” The UN has said more than 10,000 people have been killed by government forces, while Syria has said at least 2,600 members of the military and security forces have died at the hands of what it calls foreignbacked “terrorists”. The recent intensification of fighting has raised fears in Turkey of a further flood of refugees and a slide into ethnic and religious warfare that could envelop the region. Ankara, like the West, is torn between a wish to remove Assad and the fear that any armed intervention could unleash such forces. Source: Al-Jazeera
Man indicted in bomb threat against Tennessee mosque
The first minarets in Murfreesboro, Tenn., are about to be placed atop a new mosque. But when construction is complete on the new Islamic Center of Murfreesboro, located about 30 miles southeast of Nashville, no one will get to move in. An ongoing court battle has stalled the project, one of several Islamic centers around the country that, like the so-called ground zero mosque, have encountered resistance from local communities. On Thursday, federal authorities charged a Texas man with threatening to bomb the mosque and violating the civil rights of mosque members. Among the decisions involved with constructing the building, choosing the paint color for the interior walls has been the least of the worries for Essam Fathy, a physical therapist who heads the planning committee for Murfreesboro’s new mosque. He has faced graffiti, arson and accusations of ties to terrorists. There has been some upside to the intimidation. Mosque leaders say it has helped them raise money from sympathizers around the country and to fast-track construction. Now, though, the leaders are in a state of limbo. A judge says the local planning commission failed to give enough public notice for a 2010 meeting in which the site plan was approved. But county attorney Josh McCreary says the mosque was treated just like any Christian church. Still, the judge says a case that has since created more interest than any in the county’s history needs more notice than a few lines buried in a free newspaper. What has become a dispute about open meetings started out as an attempt by mosque opponents to put the religion of Islam on trial. The main criticism from attorney Joe Brandon Jr. has been about Shariah law, the ancient set of rules laid out in the Quran and followed to varying degrees by Muslims. Mosque leaders laugh at that idea and call the Shariah issues “fabricated.” But for Brandon, it’s a serious matter tied up with his own beliefs. “I believe there is only one God, and that is the living God of Israel,” Brandon says. “With that said, I still do not oppose individuals that don’t believe in that capacity. However, Shariah law is not religion, and I’m unaware of any situation where you can separate Shariah law out from under Islam. Quite frankly, I see that as a problem.” In 2010, protesters outside the Rutherford County courthouse held signs saying “remember the Twin Towers” and shouted “Islam is not a religion.” Today, the Murfreesboro town square is quieter, but the concerns still echo. Plucking a six-string banjo, Robert Godsey waits for his wife on a bench under a century-old sycamore tree. It’s an idyllic scene he fears may slip away with the growing Muslim population. But Patti Smotherman, another Murfreesboro resident, says the Tennessee town’s reputation for Southern hospitality has been tarnished by a vocal minority. “It’s not anti-Muslim,” she says. “It’s anti-Murfreesboro to be so rude.” Polls taken over the past few years show most residents are indifferent toward the new mosque, or they may not have known it even existed. And the congregation is still gathering for prayers in the back of a nondescript office building as it has for decades. But the congregants have resolved to finish the mosque, however long it takes, saying that Murfreesboro is a town they still love and consider home. Source: WBUR
POLL : Continued from pg 1 the NDP has taken the lead in Ontario, with 40 per cent support compared to the Tories’ 34 per cent. In Quebec, the NDP is also at 40 per cent, while the Tories are in third place with 18 percent. The poll comes in the wake of recent controversy in the House of Commons over the government’s massive budget bill, and as MPs head home to their ridings for the summer to take stock of their constituents’ concerns. Bricker said he doesn’t ascribe the rise in NDP popularity directly to the political machinations that occurred in the Commons in recent weeks. Nor is he convinced that it’s necessarily because of public support for Mulcair, who was chosen party leader in late March. Rather, he said it’s connected to the changing nature of the country and the fact the student protests in Quebec represent a broader unease with the economic policies of those in power. Bricker said that, in addition to this trend, the economic uncertainty in Europe could also threaten the Tories’ prospects in the 2015 election. If that economic crisis spills over into Canada and Harper is not able to stem the damage, he could feel the political pinch himself. Source: Vancouver Sun
PAKISTAN : Continued from pg 3 get its own house in order and target Pakistan-based fighters who cross the border in the other direction. Leon Panetta, the US defence secretary, said earlier this month that Washington was reaching the end of it patience over the matter.

New TV Series ‘MANGOES’ Celebrates Diversity in a Unique Way By Joseph Pooley Canada’s rich multicultural mosaic is a thriving and essential part of the country’s identity. In mainstream television, however, the diverse and often intersecting stories of young Canadians negotiating their cultural identities are often overlooked. In Mangoes, a new TV series produced by local filmmakers the SUHRWARDY BROTHERS, these stories are brought to life. The series chronicles a spirited group of South Asian urbanites coming to terms with what it means to be a Global Citizen in rapidly changing times. For the SUHRWARDY BROTHERS, the social dynamic of today’s youth, inundated with social media and technology, is a fascinating theme,
especially when considered alongside the cultural issues facing Canadians with foreign heritage. These tech-savvy youth also have exciting new stories to tell. As the Suhrwardys explain, they have “access to information like never before and have experience to draw from that perhaps generations before them never had” With the Mangoes series premiere close at hand, anticipation is high, as are expectations. The SUHRWARDY BROTHERS have been the creative force behind several popular projects of late. With a talented young cast and a first-of-its-kind partnership with Canadian mobile carrier Mobilicity, everything is in place for this project to come off as a roaring success. Yet, despite high praise, the Suhrwardys remain humble, expressing the aim of their creative venture with characteristic lighthearted wit. “At the end of the day,” they say, “if the audience enjoys the series and experiences the sweetness of the story, we think it’s worth sharing—after all it’s a slice of life, and Mango slices are usually sweet”.

HAPPY 145TH ANNIVERSARY ‘O CANADA’
Since “Canada Day” is a federal statutory holiday, it’s celebrated throughout Canada with full fervour in recognition of the July 1, 1867 enactment of the British North Americas Act (also known as the Constitution Act, 1867). This day also marks the anniversary of the officially proclaimed “O Canada” as national anthem. Sir John A. Macdonald became the first Prime Minister of Canada on that day. Not only was he a ‘father of confederation,’ but he also drafted two-thirds of the provisions of the British North America Act (BNA) creating the ‘Dominion of Canada.’ As a result, Canada became a self-governing dominion of Great Britain. The four provinces were created from the former British colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario. But now Canada consists of ten provinces and three territories. Canadian national holiday was enacted in 1879 under the name “Dominion Day.” The Canadian founders of confederation were the representatives of the British North America colonies who attended the three major conferences on Canadian confederation. In fact, the formation of the union of provinces under a new country is the basis of Canada’s July 1 celebration each year. Furthermore, on October 27, 1982, the ‘Dominion Day’ had changed into ‘Canada Day.’ In 1985 each area had created a committee to conduct their own celebration for Canada Day: The Royal anthem plays ‘God Save The Queen’ at some festive locations cel-
ebrating Canada Day. The official lyrics “O Canada” were finalized in 1968 by a special joint committee of the Senate and House of Commons. As usual, the necessary arrangements for celebration of Canada Day appear to be finalised, and Ottawa is ready to welcome Canadians from all across Canada who are on their way to the Capitol to join the festivities on the special occasion. Hundreds of thousands of people visit Ottawa Parliament Hill, Major’s Hill Park, Jacques-Cartier Park, and other locations in the surrounding areas to celebrate Canada Day. While most of the communities across the country also host the parades, carnivals, festivals, barbecues, air and maritime shows, fireworks, and free musical concerts. The festivities on Parliament Hill in Ottawa usually start around noon on Canada Day and carry on well into the evening. The National Capital Commission provides a Web cam as well to watch the crowd all day long. This year Canada Day’s main sites are Parliament Hill, Major’s Hill Park, Jacques-Cartier Park, and Confederation Park and the following events are scheduled: Carillon Concert-9 am, Flag Raising Ceremony-9:30 am, Changing of the Guard Ceremony-10 am. Canada Day Noon Show (Broadcast Live)-Noon to 1:30 pm. The Canada Day Noon Show combines ceremony and the arts. The event begins with the inspection of the guard and the 21-gun salute followed by cultural performances and speeches by dignitaries.
Happy 145th Canada Day to everyone! At this great occasion of Canada’s 145th birthday, I would like to congratulate all readers and advertisers and thank them for their continuous and ever-growing
support. Like every year, this Canada day edition of the Miracle is particularly special as it highlights various aspects of our beautiful country so make sure you read every page and let us know your opinion. As Muslim Canadians, we not only have to the responsibility of being faithful and loyal to Canada but also represent our distinct religious identity in a positive manner. I am very proud that I am a Muslim and Pakistani Canadian, and it is my duty to promote not only the Canadian values but also uphold our religious morals.I request all Muslim Canadians that be proud of your unique identity, and live here with peace and dignity as ambassadors. 2013 is the year of BC Provincial Election, and serious campaigning from all parties is about to begin. The Miracle does not endorse one political party or platform but encourages everyone to get involved in some way whether by volunteering, voting or contesting in the elections. Similarly, let us continue to come forward and represent the community in discussions about common issues such as civil rights, hunger, homelessness, and domestic violence. Long Live Canada!
Various Street Performers-2 pm to 5 pm. Canada Day Evening Show (Broadcast Live)-7:30 pm to 10 pm. The Evening Show includes a variety of performances by Canadian artists. Hopefully, by 10 pm the celebrations would reach a grand finale with fireworks as scheduled. In Western Canada the largest Canada Day celebrations will take place at the Cloverdale Millennium Amphitheatre Surrey. The event is free to the public and gates open at 10 am with the fireworks lighting up the sky at 10:15 pm. It’s important to celebrate the heritage passed down to us through the works of unbiased media, authors, poets, artists and performers. It is a time to rejoice in the discoveries of our scientific researchers, in the success of our entrepreneurs, and to commemorate our history - a history in which each new chapter reveals itself to be more fascinating than the previous one indeed. The Canadian public spend time staying outdoors with family & friends enjoying BBQ parties and the fireworks all over the country. All are free to enjoy concerts, picnics, fireworks, street performances and other activities. Let’s remember, the multicultural society has contributed a lot to beautify Canada. The dedicated immigrants have been sincerely endeavouring to establish “the needed understanding” among the people of various ethnic cultures despite challenges relating to language barrier, religious practice, political or social opinion etc. Regardless of insurmountable difficulty, a
tolerance level among this type of society members is a real blessing, as it has been playing big role in promoting diversity in schools, work places, businesses and academic institutions. Of course, the credit goes to millions of motivated immigrants who kept building this nation to make Canada a good looking country to live with peace. Constitutionally, the Canadian society enjoys equal rights, opportunities regardless of their ethnicity, race, creed or color. Since the Canadian history reflects the wonderful diverse cultural races in the country, the importance of celebrating CANADA DAY means a lot. Hence, on this day in particular, all communities must come closer to each other to bridge the gaps. It’s an opportunity for the communities to get together from coast to coast and to celebrate while sharing the pleasant commonalities. Also, it’s an opportunity to celebrate all achievements as Canada Day resembles peace to many Canadians. Most importantly, as Canadians are taking extra day off to make the Canada Day long weekend a 4 day holiday, it’s essential for everyone to maintain a safe environment so that everyone can celebrate “Nation’s Birthday” in a safe and enjoyable way.

“O CANADA” was first sung on June 24, 1880. But it was not proclaimed our national anthem until July 1, 1980 -- an entire century after it was first sung. The music was composed by Calixa Lavallée, a wellknown composer; French lyrics to accompany the music were written by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier. (the French was written before the English). Many English versions were written and sung over time, but the above is the one we adopted.

HISTORY OF MUSLIMS IN CANADA By Daood Hassan Hamdani Canada has attracted immigrants throughout its history. Over the years, they have come to escape racial or ideological intolerance, flee religious and political persecution, run away from famines and above all, to seek a better living in the country rated the best in the world by the United Nations. The desire to make it in the new country, hard work and enterprise were not their only characteristics. They also brought their distinct customs and traditions, arts and cultures and their beliefs and faiths. The Canadian society has evolved through the intermingling of these numerous groups and cross-fertilization of their heritages. In the process of adapting to the Canadian society, the immigrants also change it. And all, established citizens and newcomers alike, adjust to this dynamic process. The adjustment gives the society vibrancy, broadens its horizons and augments the choices available to its members. Since culture is made up of the contribution of those adjusting to it, one can denigrate the culture as a whole. Muslims have settled wherever the opportunity presented itself, from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast, in all the ten provinces and the two territories. Notwithstanding the dispersion, 86 per cent of the Muslims live in only six metropolitan areas and Metropolitan Toronto has more Muslims than all the provinces and territories excluding Ontario. Two-thirds are settled within 350 miles of each other. Although very small relative to the country’s total population - 2.5 per cent - they are a microcosm of the Canadian society, rich in cultural, linguistic and ethnic diversity. They include people from all the continents, from China and the Philippines to the Balkans, Ukraine, Western and Eastern Europe and South America. The Canadian-born Muslims, barely visible a few decades ago, have emerged as a force that will influence the development and orientation of Muslim institutions in the country. The resurgence of Islam among the young Muslims and its growing acceptance by non-Muslims at a time when young people are abandoning their forefathers’ religion is one of the most significant phenomena of the Canadian religious history. Pioneers Islam and Muslims are not new to Canada. The documented history of Muslims in Canada dates from the mid-19th century. Thirteen years before the Fathers of Confederation created Canada, a teenaged bride of Scottish origin, Agnes Love, gave birth to the first Muslim born in the territory that was to become Canada: James Love, named after his father, was born in Ontario in 1854. He was the eldest of the eight children of James and Agnes Love. The youngest one, Alexander, was born in 1868, one year after the Canadian confederation was formed. Another couple, John and Martha Simon, described as “Mahometans” in government documents circa 1871, migrated from the United States and settled in Ontario. Like James and Agnes Love, they were of West European origins: John was English and Martha French. Early Settlers Unlike the pioneers who settled in Ontario, the early settlers made their home in the western provinces. They were adventurers and frontiersmen. The spirit to explore uncharted territories, expectations of being a part of the momentous events in Canadian history, and the desire to share in the riches of the new land were the hallmarks of the early settlers. Thus we hear the story of the teenager Ali Abouchadi (better known as Alexander Hamilton) who walked 50 kilometres with his uncle from Lala to Beirut in Lebanon, to board the boat to Montreal on his way to claim a share of the Klondike gold. He was too late to make a fortune in gold mining but his entrepreneurship led to other successful business ventures. MIRAJ UN NABI (SAW) CELEBTRED IN MASJID ANWAR E MADINA
On July 15, Al Ghosia Foundation organized an event at Masjid Anwar e Madina Surrey to remember Miraj-un Nabi (SAW). Mr. Afroz Deen was the MC for the event. He invited a Hafiz for the recitation of the Holy Quran. After the recitation youth and adults recited some beautiful Naats. After Naat session, the MC requested the imam and Khateeb of Masjid Anwar e Madina Maulana Saiyad Imroz Dean local speaker to deliver speech in Urdu Language. Saiyad Imroz recited a Naat first and then in his spiritual speech with the references of Quran and Sunnah, he said it is Miracle for our beloved prophet Mohammad (saw) and gift of Allah to HIM(saw). He narrated in details the Hzt. Musa Kaleem Ulla incident at Jabal Toor with the reference of books. He said it is Ahel Sunnah wal Jamaht’s strong belief that Muhammad(saw) travelled from Masjid Haram to Masjid Aqsa then Masjid Aqsa to seventh sky and then La Makan. He also said for a Muslim, after his death three basic questions will be asked, so we should be ready for those and always do the good deeds to get the Jannah (Heaven).
At the end of Maulana Imroz speech , br. Afroz gave the detailed biography and the written books of the key note speaker. He requested Aulad e Rasul Imam Syed Qudsi (Texas, USA) to deliver a speech on Isra Wa Al- Miraj. Imam Syed Qudsi quoted many verses of Quran along with Hadiths, Tafaseer and Fiqh books about this great challenging miracle. He mentioned that in order to understand what happened on that night with our beloved Prophet Mohammad (SAW), we should read the first verse of Surah Isra’a in the Holy Quran and there are 45 Haidiths exist on this journey. He explained the Urdu word “MIRAJ” in this way, that word Meem for Muhammad’s (saw) Miraj, Ain means Arsh e Azam, Rah. means in raat (night), word Alif means Allah and then Jeem means Jisim(body), so the all MIRAJ means that prophet Muhammad (saw) physically went on La Makan to meet Allah(SWT). He agreed that we say Prophet Muhammad(SAW) is a Bashar but he is Afzal ul Bashar. Aulad e Rasool explained that the Holy Prophet (S.AW) made his first journey from Mecca to Masjid Aqsa in Jerusalem, while
his second journey was from Masjid Aqasa to Sidra-t’al Mantaha. He gave references from the Holy Quran with the reference of Surah Isra’a . He mentioned the meeting of Holy Prophet (S.A.W.)with Musa (A.S.) and their discussion about the prayers, which were decreased from 50 per day to 5 times a day. He also explained about the La Makkan and many other prophets and the incidents in brief. He also narrated the dialogue between Abu Jehil and Abu Bakar Siddique about the authenticity of this Miraj. He summarized the event of Miraj that everyone found very informative. After this brief Mirajun-Nabi(SAW) lecture Br. Syed Siddiqui made Duaa for all Muslim Ummah with all the guests. A Brief History of Canada
From its northern Arctic islands to the majestic mountains of the Western Cordillera and the windswept tip of Newfoundland, Canada encompasses an area of almost 4 million square miles (10 million square kilometers). It is the largest country in North America but its entire population of approximately 30 million is equivalent to that of California. Most people reside close to the US border and the vast expanse of remaining land forms one of the most extensive wilderness areas in the world. Geographically, Canada is divided into six distinct regions: the Atlantic provinces, the interior lowlands, the Canadian Shield, the great plains, the western mountains and the Arctic archipelago. The largest of these is the Canadian Shield covering almost 50% of Canada’s land mass. It forms a great arc around Hudson Bay and is roughly defined by the Atlantic, the St. Lawrence River, and the waterways that connect Lakes Huron, Superior, Winnipeg and Athabasca as well as the Great Slave and Great Bear Lakes. Although some highland areas exist, the Shield country consists mainly of low hills, countless lakes, marshes and rivers that were formed by the glacial erosion of ancient rocks. The rocky Shield topography of the Gulf coast of Labrador was described by early French explorer, Jacques Cartier, as ‘…being composed of stones and horrible rugged rocks; for along the north shore, I did not see one cart-load of earth…’ Later, Samuel de Champlain wrote that the terrain he encountered along the Ottawa River was ‘very barren and sterile’ and ‘far from attractive.’ Much of the Canadian Shield is occupied by boreal forests that provide food and shelter for ducks, geese, numerous species of migratory birds and other woodland creatures. This area, possessing the world’s greatest concentration of lakes and rivers, sup-
ported the fur trade on which Canada was built. Following Cartier’s exploration of the St. Lawrence River to the Lachine Rapids near Montreal and Champlain’s discovery of Lake Huron by way of the Ottawa River, French and Scottish voyageurs extended the main fur trade artery along the periphery of the Shield to Lake Athabasca. Fingers of lesser routes spread to Hudson Bay and penetrated the great plains to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Today, the region supports mining, logging and hydroelectric interests but the population remains low. Boreal forests gradually give way to the Arctic tundra by means of a subarctic transitional zone that marks the treeline where conifers intermingle with the tundra. Shallow soils and permafrost prevent trees from developing deep roots and make them vulnerable to being blown over by strong winds. Consequently, they grow in sheltered stands and trees are stunted due to the extreme cold. This region of open forest patterns and stunted tree growth has been called ‘the land of the little sticks.’ Here, extensive pastures of bushy Cladonia lichen grow among the thinning forests. It is the main food source for caribou, moose and musk oxen during the winter months. These animals, in turn, provide food, clothing and shelter to woodland peoples. In the springtime, great herds of caribou migrate from the forest to their summer calving grounds. On the Eastern Shield, the George River herd of Quebec Labrador caribou is one of the largest herds in the world with an estimated 700,000 to 800,000 animals. proximately 300,000 animals. The arrival of caribou to the Barren Grounds marks the advent of the Central Arctic’s brief summer. It was a time of celebration for local Inuit groups and in years of scarcity, the difference between survival and starvation. Caribou, musk oxen, migratory birds and other creatures are lured by the rich food supply of tundra meadows with low growing sedges, grasses, small wild berries, wildflowers, mosses and lichens as well as the dwarf birches and Arctic willows that grow in river valleys. The vast tundra region of northern Canada extends beyond the Shield to the Yukon in the west and encompasses the Arctic archipelago. Including portions of Greenland and Alaska, it is the traditional homeland of the Inuit people who have adapted to one of the most adverse conditions on earth. Unable to control the Arctic environment at large, the sophisticated design and manufacture of their clothing created individual micro climates that allowed them to survive in extremely cold weather. It is no fluke that Robert Peary and Ronald Amundsen, attributed with conquering the North and South Poles respectively, both utilized Inuit technology in their endeavors. In spite of copying the design of the parka (Aleut) or anorak (Inuit ‘anoraq’) and advances in synthetic fibers, the modern world has been unable to duplicate the light weight, insulation and wicking qualities of their garments that were made from a variety of skins, furs and feathers. This unique culture was highlighted on April 1, 1999 with the establishment of their new homeland, the Territory of Nunavut,
which was formerly the eastern part of the Northwest Territories. The Canadian portion of the great plains of North America is located between the Western Shield and the western mountains. It is an expansive area that gradually rises from the low lying lakes at the edge of the Shield to the foothills of the Richardson, Mackenzie and Rocky Mountain ranges. The southern part is a triangular section of fertile prairie land that is Canada’s major wheat growing belt. Although it is now considered the agrarian heartland of Canada, the earliest settlements were the forts and towns associated with the fur trade. When Champlain established a fur trading post in 1608 at the site of present day Quebec City, his primary objective was to find a river route to the Pacific. However, this goal was dependent on the success of the fur trading monopoly that had been granted to his employer, the Sieur de Monts. In 1610, with the hope of gaining greater knowledge about the interior and enhancing the monopoly’s trading arrangements, Champlain convinced the Ottawa Algonquins to take some French boys to live with them. It was from this group of young men that emerged the coureurs de bois, men who embraced the freedom and adventure of life in the wilderness.

Miracle’s Building Construction and Maintenance series
In my series of articles for roofing and renovation solutions, the current article is regarding structural painting. Painting a room can be a task that takes a couple of hours, a half day, or more. It all depends on what and how much you decide to paint. You can freshen up a room by giving a door or cabinet a new coat of paint in just a few hours. Or you can break it into smaller jobs and spread them out over a week or more. Whatever the size of the job you decide to tackle, the painting techniques remain the same. Here I will explain you the process of painting a room using paint brushes and will explain the use of roller and other painting equipments in my subsequent article. We’ll start at square one, with how you should use your painting equipment. Brushes When you embark on an interior painting job, you’ll soon discover how easy it is to use brushes and rollers competently. Even so, there are a few techniques that will help postpone fatigue and provide a neater job. The grip you use depends on the brush you’ve chosen. Trim and sash brushes with pencil handles are grasped much as you would a pencil, with the thumb and the first two fingers of the hand. This technique gives you excellent control for intricate painting. With beaver-tail handles on larger brushes, you’ll need a stronger grip because the brushes are wider and heavier. Hold the handle with the entire hand, letting the handle span the width of your palm as you would hold a ten-
nis racket. This technique works best when you’re painting large, flat surfaces. The goal of loading a brush is to get as much paint on the wall as possible without dribbling it all over the floor and yourself in the process. It will take you only a few minutes to be able to gauge accurately how much paint your brush will hold along the way. Meanwhile, start the job by dampening the bristles of the brush (with water for latex or the appropriate thinner for other types of paint) to condition them and make them more efficient. Remove excess moisture by gently striking the metal band around the handle’s base against the edge of your palm and into a sink or bucket. With the first dip, move the brush around a bit in the paint to open the bristles and let the brush fill completely. It will be easier to pick up a full load if you jab the brush gently into the paint with each dip. With most latex paints, you can simply dip the brush and let the excess drip off for a few seconds before moving the brush to the wall. With thinner coatings, however, you may have to gently slap the brush against the inside of the

paint can or lightly drag it across the inside edge of the lip to remove excess paint. To neatly paint up to a line where two edges or colors meet, called “cutting in,” use a trim brush with beveled bristles (the end of the brush resembles a chisel). Paint five or six strokes perpendicular to the edge of the ceiling or the wall. Next, smooth over these strokes with a single, long stroke, painting out from the corner first, then vertically. Where the wall and ceiling come together, use downward strokes on the wall first followed by smooth horizontal strokes. On the ceiling itself, cut in strokes toward the center of the room, away from the wall. Then paint a smooth horizontal stroke on the ceiling that follows the direction of the wall. Even if you’re using the same color of paint on adjoining surfaces, follow this method of cutting in with 2-inch-wide borders rather than just plopping a loaded brush directly into a corner. This will prevent drips, sags, and runs.
Never dip a brush more than about onethird the length of the bristles into the paint. If you do, the brush will become next to impossible to clean. To cut in at a corner, paint out from the corner for five or six strokes then smooth over them with a single, long, smooth stroke. Grasp sash and trim brush like holding a pencil whereas hold wall brush with the entire hand For more information about these article series and/or all our previous articles, please visit: www.rtmroofingandrenovations.com
Islam : Continued from pg 11 century, the following of Islam was growing faster than any other religion in the country and the visible symbols of Muslim identity had been a permanent feature of the Canadian landscape. For decades Islam was little known and even less understood outside the universities offering courses in Islamic studies. At the time the first mosque was built, the hopes and aspirations were simple. Subsequently, the growing social and religious needs meant that the search for identity required a broader base. From self-preservation in the early years manifest in the formation of local community
associations to identity revolving around the mosque, Muslims are finally seeking to establish themselves as a cohesive community. The community is only beginning to advance as an entity in the country’s educational, social and political institutions. Daood Hassan Hamdani is a pioneer writer on the evolution of Canada’s Muslim community. The article has been adapted from an address given by Hamdani on the occasion of Eid-al-Adha at the Parliament Building in Ottawa on May 2, 1996. Minor edits have been made to reflect current statistics.

LEARN MORE ABOUT CANADA:
What do people do? In many towns and cities, municipal governments organize a range of events, often outdoors. These include pancake breakfasts, parades, concerts, carnivals, festivals, firework displays and citizenship ceremonies for new Canadian citizens. The celebrations often have a patriotic mood. Canada’s national flag is widely displayed and a lot of people paint their faces red and white, which are Canada’s national colors. The celebrations in Ottawa, which is Canada’s capital city, are particularly exuberant. In the province of Quebec, many home leases start on July 1 and last for exactly one year. Hence, many people in Quebec spend Canada Day moving their possessions from one house to another. In this province, Canada Day is also known as Moving Day. In the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, July 1 is also Memorial Day. This commemorates the heavy loss of life in the Newfoundland Regiment on the first day of the Battle of the Somme during World War I. In Newfoundland and Labrador, the morning of July 1 is usually somber. Flags are flown at half-mast and memorial services are held at cenotaphs (war memorials). In the afternoon, Canada Day celebrations in the province are similar to those in the rest of the country. Public life July 1 is a statutory holiday in Canada unless it falls on a Sunday; then it moves to July 2. All provincial governments observe this day. Many organizations, businesses and stores are closed, although some book stores, pharmacies and gas stations may be open. Post offices are closed. As Canada Day falls in the Canadian summer holiday period, all schools are closed. Public transport services may operate to their usual or a reduced timeta-
ble. In some areas, extra services are provided for large scale events. Street closures due to concerts, parades and festivals may cause some local disruption to traffic.
Symbols Canada’s national flag is seen on Canada Day. This consists of two vertical red rectangles separated by a white square. The white square contains a red image of a maple leaf. Canada’s national colors are red and white and are used in many ways on Canada Day. Some people wear red and white clothing and others paint their faces in these colors.
Economy Canada is the world’s eleventh-largest economy, with a 2011 nominal GDP of approximately US$1.74 trillion. It is a member of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the G8, and is one of the world’s top ten trad-
ing nations, with a highly globalized economy. Canada is a mixed economy, ranking above the US and most western European nations on the Heritage Foundation’s index of economic freedom. The largest foreign importers of Canadian goods are the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan. In the past century, the growth of Canada’s manufacturing, mining, and service sectors has transformed the nation from a largely rural economy to an advanced, urbanized,
industrial one. Like many other First World nations, the Canadian economy is dominated by the service industry, which employs about three-quarters of the country’s workforce. However, Canada is unusual among developed countries in the importance of its primary sector, in which the logging and petroleum industries are two of the most prominent components. Canada is one of the few developed nations that are net exporters of energy. Atlantic Canada possesses vast offshore deposits of natural gas, and Alberta also hosts large oil and gas resources. The immense Athabasca oil sands give Canada the world’s secondlargest proven oil reserves, after Saudi Arabia. Canada is additionally one of the world’s largest suppliers of agricultural products; the Canadian Prairies are one of the most important global producers of wheat, canola, and other grains.[140] Canada is a major producer of zinc and uranium, and is a leading exporter of many other minerals, such as gold, nickel, aluminum, and lead. Many towns in northern Canada, where agriculture is difficult, are sustainable because of nearby mines or sources of timber. Canada also has a sizable manufacturing sector centered in southern Ontario and Quebec, with automobiles and aeronautics representing particularly important industries. Canada’s economic integration with the United States has increased significantly since World Science and technology in Canada The Canadarm robotic manipulator in action on Space Shuttle Discovery during the STS-116 mission in 2006. In 2011, Canada spent approximately C$29.9 billion on
domestic research and development. The country has produced ten Nobel laureates in physics, chemistry and medicine, and is home to a number of global technology firms, such as smartphone maker Research In Motion and video games developer BioWare. Canada ranks twelfth in the world for Internet users as a proportion of the population, with over 28 million users, equivalent to around 84 percent of its total 2011 population. The Canadian Space Agency operates a highly active space program, conducting deep-space, planetary, and aviation research, and developing rockets and satellites. In 1984, Marc Garneau became Canada’s first astronaut. As of 2012, nine Canadians have flown into space, over the course of fifteen manned missions. Canada is a participant in the International Space Station (ISS), and is a pioneer in space robotics, having constructed the Canadarm, Canadarm2 and Dextre robotic manipulators for the ISS and NASA. Since the 1960s, Canada’s aerospace industry has designed and built numerous marques of satellite, including Radarsat-1 and 2, ISIS and MOST. Canada has also produced a successful and widely used sounding rocket, the Black Brant; over 1,000 Black Brants have been launched since the rocket’s introduction in 1961.

Taking Control of Your Insomnia and Stress! By Nada Adams Insomnia plagues millions of people worldwide and is the most common sleep complaint. Insomnia means “no sleep” in Latin, and the condition is characterized by the inability to fall asleep, stay asleep, or wake refreshed. Understanding the 5 Cycles of Sleep: • 1st cycle is when your daytime normal awake thought (Beta waves) is overcome by Theta waves, offering a relaxed light sleep. • 2nd cycle is longer and slightly deeper with what are termed Sleep Spindles and K-complex waves. Both cycles involve a level of sleep that is easily awakened. • 3rd phase introduces deep sleep with Delta waves under 50% leading to the 4th phase with a further increase in Delta waves. Both the third and fourth sleep cycles are the most regenerative and immune building processes. Any disruption here sets the person back to the 1st cycle, which can be 1 major reason a lot of people do not get sufficient third and fourth cycle levels of sleep. • 5th cycle is the REM (rapid eye movement) phase where most dreaming occurs. Dreaming can act as a relief valve for recent stressful events. If the 3rd and 4th cycles are too light or non-existent you will feel the effects of fogginess, grogginess/ anxiety and irritability upon awakening. Even worse, it’s a sign that your immune system is gradually weakening which is something you can’t afford in our toxic environment. Is Your Stress Waking You Up At Night? Cortisol is a stress steroid hormone secreted by the adrenal glands located on top of each kidney - the size of almonds, small yet very important. Cortisol is closely linked to chronic insomnia, because it reduces the amount of time a person experiences REM sleep (5th stage); a reduction in REM sleep causes a person to feel significantly less rested the next day. Dr. Russell Blaylock mentioned recent studies showed people with chronic insomnia of any type also had high overall Cortisol levels - especially in the evening. The elderly secrete more Cortisol than younger people, and when this hormone is elevated in conjunction with IL-6 cytokines (special fat cells located in visceral abdominal fat – beer belly), there is significant sleep disturbance. What causes this rise in cytokine levels...1 major culprit: obesity – visceral obesity? Older people generally have more visceral fat than younger people, although the epidemic of obesity is changing to include young people due to the rampant consumption of excitotoxins inside ALL fast food and processed readymade packaged food. IL-6 is an immune chemical that causes inflammation (internal sickness) which means it is directly associated with causing all the diseases listed including: sleep apnea, narcolepsy, hypertension, alcoholism, drug abuse, depression, stress, SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome), obesity and the metabolic syndrome — and many more. To illustrate the connection, Alzheimer’s patients also have higher IL-6 and Cortisol than normal people. Secreted by the brain’s pineal gland, melatonin is the hormone most commonly associated with sleep because it induces sleepiness. By age 60 our melatonin levels begin to decline, and by age 80 they are severely depleted. Low melatonin levels in the brain make it difficult to fall asleep and maintain sleep. Melatonin supplementation can improve both of these critical sleep events, and most importantly, it enhances slow-wave sleep, the deepest and most critical and nour-
ishing phase of night-time rest. Melatonin is also one of the brain’s most important antioxidants that protects against all of the ill effects linked to brain aging and reduces the damage that results from Alzheimer’s disease. However, if you’ve been poisoned by or continue to ingest Fluoride, your production of melatonin is greatly inhibited by accumulated concentrations of fluoride in the brain’s pineal gland. This buildup has been shown to dramatically reduce your brains production of melatonin. As mentioned in my previous article explaining toxicity and the wide use of bromide and fluoride, you must be diligent in avoiding eating toxins/poisons voluntarily that will cause havoc on your body’s Endocrine (Hormone) System. Melatonin is available in both animal and synthetic form, I would recommend you choose the non-animal form since animal is usually sourced from pig. 12 Steps to Sleep Better: Below is a list of steps you can take to increase your chances of actually getting a goodnight’s sleep. It is important to remember that there are many different reasons people develop chronic insomnia — and there are often very specific problems that must be addressed before an insomniac can enjoy a solid night of sleep. To begin with, check your blood iron levels to ensure you are not deficient because deficiency will not only prevent you from having problems sleeping and staying asleep every night, it will cause excessive hair loss, fatigue, dark circles under your eyes and heart palpitations. When you have eliminated this as a cause of insomnia, the following may be helpful: • Suffering from narcolepsy? You will find a product called gamma hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) that works very well however; it is now labeled a prescription drug, even though it is a natural product. • Men with enlarged prostate can benefit from taking beta-sitosterol, saw palmetto and pygeum all can be found combined into one product – this helps to prevent trips to the bathroom in the middle of the night. • Go to bed before midnight - staying up late resets the biological clock and can disrupt sleep patterns (10pm is ideal). Every hour slept before midnight is equivalent to 3 hours. So if someone works at night and sleeps during the day, they will never feel nourished like sleeping in the first half of the night vs. the 2nd half. • Keep your bedroom cool approx 70 degrees – such a temperature replicates the lowered body temperature of sleep cycles 3 and 4. Suggestion: use a cool pillow to induce sleep • Keep the room dark - Avoid nightlights, brightly lit clocks and/or phone dials. ALSO, consider using black eye shields, this will help your brain to produce melatonin naturally. • Playing soothing recitation on a low volume at bedtime – helps you to feel grateful, relaxed and peaceful • Use earplugs, when irregular sounds abound (a must for me) • Avoid reading or watching TV a minimum of 1 hour prior to bedtime - Give yourself time to unwind because stimulating your mind late at night on the computer or watching TV inhibits sleep cycles. • If you become hypoglycemic during the night, this will wake you up - Avoid sugar and sweet foods in the evening. Eat a piece of turkey meat with no bread before bedtime. Turkey is high in L-tryptophan, an amino acid our brain uses to generate the sleep neurotransmitter serotonin. • Avoid caffeine, smoking and all foods containing excitotoxins – especially MSG and its hidden names are toxins that poison the brain and keep you up for at least an hour afterwards preventing the feeling of drowsiness. • Avoid sleeping late and napping long during the day – a vicious cycle that will keep your
Fail Only To Succeed By Shabnam Khan M.P.C.P., R.P.C Family Counsellor It is natural for people to lose heart when faced with failures. When we encounter failures, they dampen our determination and leave incredible scars in our life. Just remember, failure does not emotionally disturb some. Their success towers over all the failures. We are led to believe that successful people never fail in any of their attempts. Let us not be under the impression that successful people have had a smooth life. The fact is that people succeed only after making mistakes, learning from them and by avoiding recurrence of the same mistakes. It is important that one should learn from failures and try to overcome one’s shortcomings. When we watch a tree with it’s sprawling branches and a massive trunk, we are taken in by it’s grandeur and majesty. We don’t see the hidden roots that have stuck deep into the soil. The roots that are responsible for noursleeping pattern out of whack and unhealthy. (The Prophet praised, peace be upon him, taking a short nap in the time of Thuhur – it has Blessings in it.) • Exercise earlier in the day and avoid exercising past 7pm - Exercising lowers inflammatory cytokines however exercising late in the day will rev-up the metabolism and this can keep you awake.
NATURAL SLEEP-AIDS:
• Calmative teas - Chamomile, valerian root, passionflower and catnip all calm and sooth the nerves. The brand of tea named ‘Traditional Medicinals’ makes a tea called Nighty Night® containing a mixture of these herbs. And Celestial Seasonings makes a tea called Sleepytime®. For those who have to get up in the night to urinate, I suggest avoiding teas and instead take supplements containing any of the above mentioned herbs or consider reducing the amount of water you use to make a much more concentrated ¼ cup of tea. • Magnesium – 500mg before bed (1000mg total per day) will help replenish this vital mineral in your body and relax your muscles and sooth the nerves. It’s the most important mineral, sisters with Potassium and together, they support the function of your nervous system including the beating of your heart. • Flavonoids - Many of the flavonoids calm anxiety and reduce inflammation including allergies. The most useful are hesperidin and quercetin. Take 250-500 mg of Hesperidin and 250 mg of Quercetin 1 hour before bedtime. • Omega-3 - Take your fish oils one hour before bedtime – Renew Life: Critical Omega is what I use. The omega-3 fatty acids suppress and reduce the cytokines that disturb sleep. • Relora - made of a blend of Magnolia officinalis and Phellodendron amurense — it has been shown to reduce stress, promote a positive mood and induce restful sleep. It also slashes excess cortisol secretion, which can cause insomniacs to wake up during the night. Do not mix Relora with prescription medications or take it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The dose is 250 mg three times a day. • Rhodiola - known as Golden or Arctic root, it reduces stress and suppresses excess catecholamine excretion (a hormone that can cause a person to feel jittery and anxious) from the adrenal glands. Take 1 – twice a day. • Glucosamine – though associate with joint health, recent research has shown it can also reduce immune damage. Take 250 mg – 3x a day. • Chinese Skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis) contains powerful anti-inflammatory flavonoids that have been shown to protect the brain and calm anxiety. It has a long safety record and is backed up by extensive research. It comes in liquid
ishment and strength of the tree. We often notice the fruits of success of a person and not the struggle behind it. We often mistake success as fortune and failure as misfortune. All success is the result of hard work and ceaseless effort, while failure is a product of sluggishness, miscalculations and sometimes unforeseen accidents. Every failure can be a stepping stone to success provided we understand the cause of failure and overcome it. Failures are lessons in life. Life is a series of trails and errors and it is impossible for anyone to avoid errors and wish away trails. Don’t grieve over failures. Make every failure an experience and learn the right lessons from it. When you start grieving over failures you miss the lesson they teach you. Every failure has a cause and instead of ruminating over failure, analyse the cause. Therein lies the lesson. The lesson you learn is positive advantage. Failures need not frighten you. A positive approach to failure will work as a springboard for you to leap towards success. “ In this limitless universe, you can never be stuck.” For any further enquiries, please contact: shabnam@skcounselling.ca form. The dose is 30 to 40 drops three times a day. • L-theanine combined with melatonin is known to encourage sleep, quiet the mind, and bring on sufficient relaxation to invite sleep. If you have issues with melatonin, Valerian may be a good substitute. • Tart cherry juice - normalizes sleep and other benefits. The University of Michigan research published last year in the Journal of Medicinal Food, suggesting tart cherries may help control weight; prevent metabolic syndrome and the cluster of symptoms – high blood pressure and high cholesterol that increases the risk for type 2 Diabetes and heart disease.
SUGGESTION: Before Bed Take the Following: 1000mg of buffered vitamin C (magnesium ascorbate – not calcium); this helps induce sleep and supports your adrenal glands as Vit C is stored there. Magnesium Malate (250 mg) at bedtime; it is a natural relaxant and calmative (also very helpful in eliminating restless leg). Melatonin - start at 1 mg 30 minutes before bedtime (read the label – avoid animal sources since it’s usually pig source - only get Melatonin produced in a lab); increase dosage as necessary as it will induce sleepiness and dreaming. Ensure you give yourself at least 8 hours of sleep/rest to guarantee you’re no longer impaired to operate machinery. The list above is not to be taken altogether. Pick and choose 2 or 3 items from the list and test how you feel after a few nights of taking it consecutively. Your body may need a few days of supplementation to reduce Cortisol levels for a significantly noticeable difference. Do you have a Question or Comment? She grew up in Port Coquitlam BC and has been drawing ever since she could hold a pencil. At age 8, her parents encouraged Laura’s artistic disposition by enrolling her in after school art classes with local artist Judy Shields. Laura continued to practice drawing and painting throughout her school years and in 2004, completed a 15’ by 17’ mural honouring Terry Fox’s run across Canada. The mural is displayed in Terry Fox Secondary School. Lauras passion for painting is charged by her enthusiasm for life and music, her love of reading and words, and a continuous desire to bring colour to the world. Laura is hopeful that her art brings

NHLPA draws line in the dirt ahead of contract talks About nine months ago, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman put together a wish list for the coming labour negotiations with the players. Like anything to do with collective bargaining, it was mainly about money: Lowering the players’ share of revenue from its current 57 per cent to less than 50, cutting players’ rights to salary arbitration, not allowing wealthy teams to get bad contracts off their books by sending the player to the minor leagues, clamping down on front-loaded contracts and limiting the lengths of any player contract. There is also a push from some of the small-revenue teams to lower the minimum payrolls, or salary-cap floor, to ease their financial woes. The way the players see it, they gave the owners a 24-per-cent rollback in all of their salaries in 2005 when the current agreement was reached, in addition to finally agreeing to a salary cap based on revenue, at a cost of losing the entire 2004-05 season to a lockout. Even though both the players’ unions in the wealthier NFL and NBA agreed to reduce their share of league revenue to narrow bands of 47 to 48.5 per cent (NFL) or 49 to a little more than 51 per cent (NBA) in recent settlements, the NHL players feel they gave up a lot seven years ago and don’t need to be as generous this time
when the agreement expires Sept. 15. Other issues for the players are the escrow system that came with the salary cap, in which money is withheld from their pay cheques to ensure they receive the proper share of league revenue, developing a concussion protocol, travel and scheduling and participation in the Olympics. The trouble is the NHL still has the same over-riding problem it did seven years ago – the 10 or so teams at the top of the revenue chart make all kinds of money while teams in the middle struggle to break even and the 10 teams at the bottom lose millions of dollars a year. Introducing a salary cap based on revenue only exacerbated the problem in the case of the poorest teams. As the Toronto Maple Leafs and the other Canadian teams, aided by something else no one saw coming seven years ago, the Canadian dollar at par, piled up the revenue, the small-revenue teams found it harder and harder to hit the minimum salary limit each year. In the first year of the current agreement, 2005-06, the cap ceiling was $39-million (all currency U.S.). In the season just ended, with the NHL announcing record revenue of $3.3-billion, the cap floor was $49-million. The owners’ solution is to cut down the players’ share of the revenue. Now that the NFL and NBA
players agreed to take 50 per cent or less, the NHL owners are confident they can do the same. The players, though, see the solution through more revenue sharing. It was introduced in the current agreement, albeit in limited fashion, but the Coyotes and Panthers et al are still swimming in red ink. Since many small-revenue teams feel the current revenue-sharing system is too restrictive because they need to hit certain growth targets or they lose part of their share, any labour disruption could be as much about squabbles among the owners as it is between them and the players. Simon puts Grey Cup defence before receiving record Greatness is not always appreciated until it is acknowledged by others, and for that reason Angus Reid was quick to point out the obvious about his longest serving teammate with the B.C. Lions, Geroy Simon. “Because he’s so consistent, a lot of people take what he does for granted,” Reid said of a teammate whose durability during their 12-year career together on the CFL team has been almost identical. “He pumps out 1,600-1,800-yard seasons every year, it’s just what you expect him to do. You may never see this kind of greatness ever again so I hope it is appreciated by the fans
because I know how great it is.” The natural hype of a home opener combined with the chance to erase Milt Stegall’s receiving yardage mark of 15,153 yards had the Lions trying to do some lead blocking Monday. The club held a news conference for local media and plans to do the same if there is national interest Wednesday. Simon, of course, would just as soon say nothing, as his focus lies not in the 67 yards he needs for the record but defence of the Lions’ Grey Cup championship. “This season is not about 67 yards; that’s not what I trained for,” he said. “I trained to
be a Grey Cup champion for a third time.” But the Lions and the league will do their part should the record fall, which is by no means a certainty against a stout Winnipeg secondary which did not yield more than four catches and 54 yards in either of the Lions’ two losses against the Bombers last season. The club is bringing in 20 family members for the occasion, and the game will be stopped in order for commissioner Mark Cohon to make a brief presentation. Simon had 67 yards or more in nine of the Lions’ 18 regular season games last year.
