Special Eid Edition Summit strengthens drive for Islamic solidarity The Islamic Solidarity Summit called by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah ended with a focus on inter-sectarian harmony and Islamic unity, and a definitive stand against the Bashar Assad regime in Syria. “A regime that kills its people has no right to continue in power,” said Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, secretarygeneral of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, at a press conference in the Al-Safa Royal Palace yesterday. “The summit sends a strong message to the Syrian regime: The massacre of unarmed civilians is unacceptable and the bloodshed has to stop,” he said.

Minister Baird cancels grant to Canadian Relief for Syria due to medical supplies controversy Five days after the federal government pledged $2 million to an unregistered Canadian charity set up to shepherd medical supplies into war-torn Syria, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird has reneged on the commitment. Baird said the government would not uphold its offer due to concerns the Ottawa-based charity, Canadian Relief for Syria (CRS), would use part of the donation for items other than medical supplies. “We wanted to ensure that supplies could make their way to the victims of the Assad regime in the best way possible, and that (the money) wouldn’t fund things like warehouses and infrastructure,” the minister told reporters Wednesday. Ottawa had previously required CRS to provide the government with an inventory of medical supplies that would be purchased and an explanation of how they would be distributed to the organization’s teams on the Turkish and Jordanian borders. But Baird said questions were raised after the initial funding announcement when discussions were held with CRS over a contribution agreement. “That’s where we saw some of the issues which caused us some concern,” he said. Baird insisted the government will search for alternative ways to assist Syrian civilians or members of the opposition targeted by President Bashar Assad’s regime. He called the 17-month-long struggle a “top priority for me, for our department and, I think, for our allies and that’s why we’ll be moving as expeditiously as we possibly can.” The announcement follows the minister’s impromptu trip to the Middle East, where, in addition to the CRS pledge, he said Canada would donate $6.5 million to the Jordanian government to help with Syrian refugees flooding the country. The $2 million deal with CRS made headlines earlier this week after it was revealed the group was still in the process of obtaining Canada Revenue Agency approval as a charitable organization. Despite the group’s unregistered status and unproven track record as an aid group, Prime Minister Stephen Harper defended the government’s pledge at a news conference Tuesday, explaining that “officials have done due diligence on all the organizations to which we’ve given money.” “I’m told they have the appropriate connections by which to deliver aid on the ground,” he said of CRS. Momtaz Almoussly, the secretary and government liaison co-ordinator for CRS, said the group received no word Wednesday that the $2 million had been withdrawn and he was still trying to gather details. “Officially, we haven’t received anything,”

Afghan civilians targeted in wave of attacks
At least nine people in eastern Afghanistan have been wounded in a grenade attack, a day after 55 Afghans died in a triple suicide bombing in the country’s southwest. The target of Wednesday’s attack was not immediately clear, but the grenades were launched in a location near both a mosque and a US military base at 6 am. Sardar Mohammad Zazai, the police chief of Khost province, told the Associated
Press news agency that the three grenades were thrown into the mosque during morning prayers. The Taliban claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing they said took place on Wednesday in a military base in the province, but made no mention of the grenades. In the west of the country, a bicycle bomb in Herat city left at least 18 people, including three women injured Wednesday afternoon. As with the attacks in Nimroz, the Herat attacks were near the city centre in an area crowded with locals shopping for the upcoming Eid holiday. Wednesday’s attacks came hours after at least 55 people were killed in a series of bombings on Tuesday, including an attack where three suicide bombers detonated their explosives in the country’s southwest. The explosions in Zaranj, the capital of Nimroz province, along the Iranian border,
killed at least 36, including 10 policemen, and left about 120 people wounded on Tuesday. Three suicide attackers out of an original group of 11 blew themselves up in separate areas of the city, one outside a hospital, police said. Two of the attackers were killed by security forces Monday night. Three others had been detained Tuesday morning. “Three managed to detonate themselves while three others were gunned down,” Latifi said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but similar attacks are usually blamed on the Taliban, fighting to overthrow the government of President Hamid Karzai. Nimroz is a relatively peaceful province but it has seen an increase in violence recently. A bomb also detonated in a market in the northern province of Kunduz, killing 10 people and injuring 36 others. The explosion, which killed several children, went off just as shoppers were heading home for the meal ending the Ramadan fast. Hamid Karzai,
the Afghan president, who was in Saudi Arabia for a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Conference, strongly condemned the attacks saying the targeting of “fast-observing Muslims is clear animosity against Islam, whose perpetrators will achieve nothing but public abhorrence and severe torment in the court of Almighty Allah”. In Badakhshan province, the district government chief and four tribal elders were killed in an ambush. In Helmand province, another four tribal elders were killed in the Musa Qala district by a roadside bomb. Four children were killed by an Improvised Explosive Device in southeastern Paktika province. The aim of the string of attacks, said our correspondent, was to “undermine Afghan confidence in security. These devastating bombings across the country in a very, very busy week are a big blow to any sense of security Afghans have”, especially in an area as unlikely as Nimroz. Source: Al Jazeera
Myanmar allows Turkish minister to deliver aid to Muslims and Buddhists displaced by fighting Myanmar’s government has allowed Turkey’s foreign minister to distribute humanitarian aid at camps of Muslims and Buddhists displaced by communal fighting in June, a move the U.N. called “significant” because it signals the country’s willingness to alleviate the suffering of its people. The longstanding resentment between the Muslim Rohingya minority and Myanmar’s majority Buddhists erupted in violence in western Rakhine state in June, leaving at least 78 dead, thousands of homes burned down, and tens of thousands homeless. Myanmar considers the Rohingyas to be illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and denies them citizenship. Bangladesh says Rohingyas have been living in Myanmar for centuries and should be recognized there as citizens. Vijay Nambiar, the special adviser on Myanmar to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, issued a statement Tuesday stressing the importance of a visit to Rakhine state last week by Turkey’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, who was accompanied by his wife and daughter and officials from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. Before he left, Davutoglu said he would negotiate the delivery of aid to the Rohingyas, whom the U.N. considers to be among the most persecuted people in the world. Nambiar said the visit at the invitation of Myanmar’s government, including to the camps, was “significant” in light of the recent violence. The Turkish aid “was among the first international humanitarin assistance accepted by Myanmar aside from that provided by the U.N,” he said. Nambiar said the Turkish aid distrubtion demonstrated the Myanmar government’s willingness “to co-operate with the international community to alleviate the suffering of its people.” “Such positive steps will help support Myanmar’s ongoing process of democratization and reform,” he said. Myanmar’s President Thein Sein has introduced a wave of globally praised reforms since taking office last year following decades of repressive military rule, but activists say the government remains repressive. Nambiar said he and the secretary-general have been in continuous contact with Myanmar authorities on the issue of humanitarian aid to the displaced in Rakhine. “The United Nations is committed to assisting Myanmar and its people in their reform and national reconciliation efforts, including overcoming imminent challenges, in co-operation with the international community,” he said. Canada : Continued from pg 1 a shocked Almoussly told the Star. He denied Baird’s statement that the money would be used for anything other than medical supplies, which was the only subject discussed in meetings with the government. “I don’t know anything about buildings or houses,” he said. “The money is going for medical supplies. If we are getting money from the government we are using it for medical supplies. Any money we’re getting from other donors, we’re (using) to buy medical supplies.” Almoussly blamed the government’s reversal on media reports tying CRS to another charity, Human Concern International, which was once linked to Ahmed Said Khadr, an alleged Al Qaeda financier killed in Pakistan in 2003. A donation link on the CRS website redirected to Human Concern International. The link has since been removed. “We are very sad that some media drama gets in the way of supporting medical supplies to people who are dying from non-fatal injuries from lack of medical care,” Almoussly said. CRS, a chapter of the Paris-based Union of Syrian Medical Relief Organizations, employs doctors and engineers across Canada and on the Turkish and Jordanian borders. Almoussly said it sporadically works with volunteers inside Syria to assist with medical aid. Source: Toronto Star

Syria warplanes hammer rebel border town Syrian fighter jets have conducted two devastating bombing runs on the rebel-held town of Azaz, flattening a string of houses and killing at least 30 people including children, activists said. Hundreds of other residents fled across the border to Turkey after the attack on Wednesday, news agencies and witnesses said. “Bashar did this. God help us, these animals will kill us all,” said one man, hoisting a bloodied arm that had been piled up on the pavement outside the hospital in Azaz after the bombardment. A correspondent with the AFP news agency said at least 10 houses had been flattened in the bombardment. Azaz, which lies just to the north of the main battleground city of Aleppo, is often used as a rear base by rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) fighters. The director of the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdel Rahman, said more than 20 people were killed in the attack, the latest atrocity blamed on the regime of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. Witnesses said shortly after the attack that at least five bodies had been pulled from the rubble and many more were still trapped. “This was a civilian area. All these houses were packed with women and children sleeping during the fast,” said witness Abu Omar, a civil engineer in his 50s, referring to the dawn-to-dusk fast Muslims observe during Ramadan. Witnesses and FSA forces who reinforced security around the town after the strike said the jet fired twice, targeting a makeshift media centre used by foreign reporters in the second, smaller strike. The attack came amid heavy shelling of several districts of Aleppo, regarded as a pivotal battleground in the conflict that is now entering its 18th month and has killed more than 23,000 people, according to activists. The Observatory said the strike by a MiG fighter jet targeted a former Baath Party headquarters which had been taken over by rebel groups. Dozens of people, many wailing and shouting, were climbing over the rubble, trying to pull out victims. At the local hospital, people brought in the body of a little girl apparently aged no more than four. Footage from an amateur video distributed by the Observatory also showed the immobile, dust-covered hand of a little girl, likely dead, reaching out from under ruined buildings. Witnesses said the bomb must have weighed at least half a tonne and the impact shattered windows up to four blocks away. Residents insisted there was no rebel base where the bomb struck, but some said the families of FSA fighters lived there. On the pavement outside the hospital, body parts had been heaped in a pile under a blanket. Hundreds of people, most of them women and children, fled across the border to Turkey after the air strike, with families carrying bags of clothes and boxes of food on their heads, an AFP correspondent said. In Aleppo itself, a new front had reportedly opened in the northeastern district of Baaideen, forcing residents to flee as regime forces pounded the area using tanks and warplanes. Abu Ubayda, a local rebel commander, said regime forces were trying to encircle the FSA between Baaideen and southwestern district of Salaheddin which the government retook last week. Lebanon clan claims revenge kidnap of Syrians
A large Lebanese Shia clan said its military wing has kidnapped at least 23 people in Lebanon in a bid to secure the release of one of its family members allegedly kidnapped near Damascus this week. According to Arab television reports, a Syrian rebel group claimed it had kidnapped Hassan al-Meqdad on Monday, accusing him of being a sniper and a member of Lebanese Shia group Hezbollah. Hezbollah spoke out on Tuesday and denied al-Meqdad was a member of the party. In remarks to Lebanon’s National News Agency, Hassan al-Meqdad’s brother Hatem said “the snowball would grow”. In a video broadcast by Al Mayadeen, a Lebanon-based TV station, two of the Syrian hostages were shown in the custody of masked gunmen from the Meqdad clan wearing green fatigues and armed with automatic rifles. Clan member Maher al-Meqdad said the detained Syrians included a lieutenant who had deserted from Assad’s army to join the rebels, while those who were not FSA members had been freed. He gave no details of the abduction. One of the detainees, shown looking tense in a room full of gunmen, identified himself as a captain by the name of Mohammed, and said his role was to help supply the FSA. The other man said he was his assistant. The Meqdad family said their hostages included a Turkish businessman and several Syrians they described as members of the Free Syrian Army. A diplomat said the Turkish businessman had been kidnapped shortly after arriving in Lebanon earlier on Wednesday. The family said it would also hold Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey responsible for the kidnapping of their relative. All three countries support rebel groups in Syria. Saudi Arabia ordered its citizens to leave Lebanon “immediately”, the state news agency reported in an SMS alert on Wednesday. The United Arab Emirates issued a similar warning, with Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahayan tweeting: “Unfortunately, the situation is very dangerous.” Qatar urged its citizens to leave Lebanon as well, the state news agency reported. “Due to unstable security situation, Qatar’s embassy in Beirut has urged Qatari nationals to leave Lebanon immediately,” it said. According to
local media reports, Abu Ali also said that the Meqdad family was working closely with other families in the region, and would reveal a ‘big catch’ on Thursday. An unnamed high-ranking security official said he had no immediate comment on the matter. “We are working on it,” he said. Ahmed Shlash, a Syrian MP currently in Lebanon to negotiate their release, told Al-Mayadeen: “Syrians coming to work in Lebanon should not be dragged into a sectarian struggle. Young people coming to work in Lebanon have nothing to do with politics.” Syria’s main opposition coalition condemned the kidnappings, as Syrians seeking refuge in Lebanon from violence in their country expressed fears
over Wednesday’s incidents. Violence in neighbouring Syria has spilled over into Lebanon in the form of cross-border shootings, shelling by the Syrian army, tit-for-tat kidnappings and sectarian clashes between groups which are divided over the revolt. Syrian rebel groups have frequently accused Hezbollah, which is closely allied with the regime of President Bashar alAssad, of interfering in the violence, though the group has consistently denied this. Syria occupied Lebanon militarily and politically for nearly three decades until 2005, when its troops were forced to pull out under international pressure after the assassination of former Lebanese premier Rafik Hariri that year. Seven years after Syria withdrew from Lebanon, the country’s political forces remain sharply divided over their neighbour. Source: Al-Jazeera
Pipeline review panel wants a copy of scathing U.S. report into Kalamazoo spill The panel reviewing the Northern Gateway pipeline proposal has asked Enbridge to submit a damning U.S. report into the company’s 2010 Michigan oil spill as evidence. Two interveners previously tried to introduce the report, but were denied by the National Energy Board’s joint review panel on the grounds that the individuals were unable to speak to its authenticity. “The panel found that when you submit evidence, you need to be able to answer questions on that report and if there’s any clarifications,” said Annie Roy of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency. Asked why the NEB waited eight months to request such a relevant document, past the regular deadline to submit new evidence, Roy said the review is a “continuous process.” “The panel continually asks parties or Northern Gateway to submit additional information,” she said. The document, prepared by the National Transportation Safety Board, blames Enbridge for fail-
ing to fix a defect in their pipeline that was discovered five years before it ruptured and gushed millions of litres of oil into Michigan’s waterways. It also accuses the company of failing to adequately respond once the spill hit. “Enbridge’s emergency response actions during the initial hours following the release were not sufficiently focused on source control and demonstrated a lack of awareness and training in the use of effective containment methods,” it reads. “Had Enbridge implemented effective oil containment measures for fast-flowing waters, the amount of oil that reached Talmadge Creek and the Kalamazoo River could have been reduced.” Enbridge has been given a Sept. 5 deadline to present information on how it has changed and improved operations since the Michigan spill. The NEB panel is expected to complete its review by the end of 2013. Source: CTV News
Muslim group blasts U.S. judge over ‘sea monster’ comparison A Muslim rights group criticized a federal judge on Wednesday, complaining he had compared the civil liberties of Muslim Americans to a “hideous sea monster” while tossing out a lawsuit over the infiltration of California mosques by an FBI informant. U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney dismissed the lawsuit on Tuesday, which charged that the undercover FBI informant had violated civil liberties of U.S. Muslims by spying on them, ruling that allowing the case to proceed could risk disclosure of government secrets. In his 36-page order, Carney invoked the fictional Greek hero
Odysseus, who was forced to sail his ship between a six-headed sea monster and a dangerous whirlpool during an epic voyage home from the Trojan War. “Odysseus opted to pass by the monster and risk a few of his individual sailors, rather than hazard the loss of his entire ship to the sucking whirlpool,” Carney wrote. “Similarly, the proper application of the state secrets privilege may unfortunately mean the sacrifice of individual liberties for the sake of national security.” Carney allowed the case to go forward only against five current or former agents named as individual defendants, who the plaintiffs
Standard Chartered rejects laundering claims Ecuador accused Britain on Wednesday of threatening to storm its London embassy to arrest Julian Assange after the U.K. issued a stern warning to the South American nation ahead of its decision on an asylum bid by the WikiLeaks founder. Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said Britain had earlier in the day issued “a written threat that it could assault our embassy” if Assange is not handed over. Patino also said he would announce on Thursday morning whether Ecuador would grant the request of the secret-spilling former Australian hacker, who took refuge in Ecuador’s embassy on June 19 to avoid extradition to Sweden. Assange faces questioning there for alleged sexual misconduct. As news broke of the warning, police were seen reinforcing Scotland Yard’s presence outside the embassy in a tony London neighbourhood near the Harrods department store. In Quito, about 30 people yelling “England, what part don’t you understand? We are sovereign!” protested outside the British Embassy, and briefly trampled a British flag. In London, a small group of Assange supporters were gathered outside the Ecuadorean embassy late Wednesday, according to live footage broadcast by a citizen journalist on the scene. The embassy was dark, although occasionally the curtains appeared to move. British officials have vowed not to grant Assange safe passage out of their country if Ecuador grants asylum. They say they will arrest him the moment he steps outside the embassy. But they had not publicly suggested they might strip the embassy of its diplomatic inviolability. After Patino’s brief appearance before reporters, Britain’s Foreign Office issued a statement citing a 1987 British law it says permits the revocation of diplomatic status of a building if the foreign power occupying it “ceases to use land for the purposes of its mission or exclusively for the purposes of a consular post.” Under international law, diplomatic posts are considered the territory of the foreign nation. Asked by The Associated Press about Patino’s characterization of Britain’s warning, a Foreign Office official said via email that the letter “was not a threat” and was intended to clarify “all aspects of British law that Ecuador should be aware of.” The official would not be identified by name, citing policy. Patino said the missive including the veiled threat was delivered to his country’s Foreign Ministry in writing and verbally to its ambassador in London on Wednesday. The law cited was Britain’s 1987 Diplomatic and Consular Premises Act. Patino said Ecuador “rejects in the most energetic terms the explicit threat of the official British communication.” The Foreign Office statement did not elaborate on Britain’s intentions if Assange were to be granted political asylum by Ecuador, whose president, Rafael Correa, has expressed sympathy for the Wikileaks founder. Assange, whose publishing via the internet of thousands of sensitive U.S. diplomatic cables and military dispatches has angered U.S. officials, says the charges against him are trumped up. His supporters say they believe the U.S. has secretly indicted him and would extradite him from Sweden. Correa has said Assange could face the death penalty in the United States and for that reason he considers the asylum request a question of political persecution. Analysts in Ecuador expressed doubts that Britain would raid the embassy. Professor Julio Echeverria of Quito’s FLACSO university said Britain “has a long established tradition in Europe of respecting diplomatic missions,” which under international law are considered sovereign territory. A former Ecuadorean ambassador to London, Mauricio Gandara, told The Associated Press “I refuse to believe in this threat because if asylum is granted the British government will not grant safe passage and Mr. Assange could be in the embassy for a long time.” Source: CBC News claim violated the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Plaintiffs attorneys have said they will appeal. “Our civil liberties are not a hideous sea monster, but they are instead the most stalwart defense against the real threats of tyranny and oppression,” Ameena Mirza Qazi, deputy executive director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), said in a written statement. The lawsuit, jointly filed by CAIR and the American Civil Liberties Union last year in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, said the FBI sent undercover informant Craig Monteilh into Orange County mosques to collect personal information on hundreds, or possibly thousands, of Muslims. According to the suit, Monteilh took hundreds of hours of surreptitious video and audio recordings of religious lectures, classes, cultural events and other meetings in 2006 and 2007 as part of a counterterrorism investigation, known as “Operation Flex,” that did not produce a single conviction. “It is deeply troubling that the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay have more access to judicial review than U.S. citizens,” plaintiffs attorney Reem Salahi said. “Where plaintiffs and the informant himself describe act after act of illegal government surveillance, the government should not be allowed to skirt liability by using its wild card -state secrets.” The FBI and U.S. Department of Justice declined to comment on Wednesday. The FBI has acknowledged in court documents that Monteilh was used as a confidential informant during the operation but denies any wrongdoing, saying it took reasonable measures to investigate credible evidence of possible terrorist activity. Carney wrote in his ruling that he did not reach the decision lightly and conducted a careful review of classified government filings with “a skeptical eye” before ruling. Source: Reuters

CHOOSING EID DAY WITHOUT MOON SIGHTING Based on astronomical calculations, the Fiqh Council of North America has announced Eid ul Fitr (1433 A.H) celebration to be on Sunday, the 19th of August 2012, which happens to be the first day of Shaw’waal after the completion of Ramadan. Shaw’waal is the 10th month of Islamic calendar. But the calendar is based on astronomical calculations to affirm each date regardless of seeing the new moon with naked eyes. Some people follow calculations while some follow Saudi Arabia, but some only follow local moon sighting for deciding the right day of Eid. The ongoing controversy keeps the issue debateable as is obvious below: 1. Hadith Sahih Al Bukhari Narrated by Ibn UmerRZ: “I heard Allah’s Apostle saying: ‘When you see the crescent of the month of Ramadan, start fasting, and when you see the crescent of the month of Shawwal, stop fasting, and if the sky is overcast and you can’t see it then regard the month of Ramadan as of 30 days.” 2. The Hilal Committee Canada maintains, the USA and some countries of the Caribbean belong to one “MATLA Horizon” (especially regions falling in the Toronto time zone EST), and as soon as sufficient evidence is available of moonsighting, Eid is declared after verification. The Hilal Committee evaluates astronomical data as well to reach its decisions, however, all decisions are based on the actual sighting of the moon with naked eye in North America and the Caribbean. 3. Though, Islamic law clearly requires
actual visual, unaided sighting of the moon, yet, there are no restrictions to use calculations in determining the probability of a moon sighting. 4. Due to the different Horizon of Saudi Arabia, some senior Muftis and Scholars of Saudi Arabia including Sh. Abdullah bin Baz, Sh. Saleh bin Uthaimeen have issued fatwas for North American Muslims to go by the local sightings only. Apart from the above discussion, once the “fasting workout” of July-August 2012 is over, the celebration of joyous occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr (1433 AH) will begin on Sunday 19th Aug with a large congregational prayer in all Canadian cities. However, Muslims living on the east and west coasts of the USA and Canada, may begin the celebrations on different dates depending on new moon sighting in specific locations. In fact, the Eid is “Thanksgiving Day” for the believers. This day is for the Muslims to show their real happiness for physical and spiritual healing. They thank Almighty Allah for enabling them to go through the month of fasting and listening to the Qur’an with full devotion. They thank Him for strength and the opportunities of life, which He has given to them to carry out their obligation of fasting and other good deeds during the blessed month of Ramadan. Eid prayer is wajib (strongly recommended). It consists of two Rakaat (units) with six or thirteen additional Takbirs. It must be offered in congregation. The prayer is followed by the Khutbah (sermon). The Khutbah is part of the worship and listening

to it is Sunnah. Then there is Zakat al-Fitr which is mandatory on every Muslim on his own behalf and on behalf of all people he takes care of, and it must be paid ahead of Eid prayer. As Eid is not a national public holiday in Canada, many Islamic businesses and organizations adjust their business hours to accommodate the great event. A crowd build up inside and outside of Masaajid (mosques) and rented halls and open spaces during Eid ul Fitr is huge as has been seen in Ottawa, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto, where the congregational prayers are done at multiple times to accommodate the large number of worshippers. Also, the Eid Festival at Canada Place includes a carnival with many fun-filled rides, shows, sport tournaments and a variety of international cuisines. Muslims young or old wear expensive clothing, gifts and greeting cards are exchanged and children receive presents or cash. People dress up in their fancy clothes. Special foods are prepared for friends and relatives. They visit each other’s homes on the Eid day in the convenience of “open house fashion” welcoming everyone to enjoy sweets and tasty dishes. ISNA (Islamic Society of North America) and ICNA (Islamic Circle of North America) are well known for their contributions to the Muslim community. However, MAC (Muslim Association of Canada) is fully dedicated to reach out to lower-income Muslim families and invite them to the Eid festivities as guests. This program is of-

Although, family fun and entertainment continues all day long, yet the unique purpose of celebrating Eid remains the praise of Allah (SWT) and obeying His commandments indeed.
words, Gold is a First Class win while bronze is Third Class. In any parlance, Third Class equates with Garbage! If someone told you that the service or the quality of food in a particular restaurant was Third Class, would you consider dining there? Canada won only 1 Gold and only 5 Silver; Australia, with a population less than that of Canada took home almost TWICE as many medals as Canada, and almost FOUR times as many in Gold and Silver combined! Canada has a funding system for its athletes that is the envy of many; with lottery tickets supporting our athletes, they can concentrate full time in their devoted sports field and not have to do it part-time, unlike in many other countries that showed better than Canada. Ukraine did better than Canada, not only in total count but alsio in gold and Silver combined. Spain took in 13 while Kazakhstan took in 8 Gold and Silver medals, far better than Canada! So let’s not classify Bronze as the “New Gold” as many media do, but call it what it really is “THIRD CLASS!”

The Day of Eid ul Fitr
One of the meritorious aspect of Shawwal is that it has been chosen by Allah Almighty for the celebration of “Eid-ulFitr”, one of the only two annual festivals recognised by the Shariah. This happy day is designed by the Shari’ah as a sign of gratefulness by the Muslims on the accomplishment of Ramadhan, and as an immediate reward by Allah for those who spent the month of Ramadhan in fasting and performing other forms of ‘Ibaadah’. Instead of commemorating an event from the past, the Shari’ah has prescribed the first of Shawwal as an annual festival for the Muslims at an occasion when they themselves accomplish a great ‘Ibaadah’. This approach reminds the Muslims that they should not rely only on the accomplishments of their ancestors, rather, they should themselves perform meritorious acts to please their Creator. In prescribing the ways to celebrate the happy day, Islam has adopted another unique approach. The festivals of other religions or
nations normally comprise of some acts of rejoicing and enjoyment. The whole happy day is normally spent in dancing, drinking singing and playing. Islam has, conversely, prescribed a very simple, prestigious and more humane way to observe the happy day. First of all, it is mandatory on all the well-off Muslims to start their day by paying ‘Sadaqat -ul-fitr’ to the poor of their society, so that they too may enjoy the day along with others, and may not be worried for earning their livelihood at least in that day of happiness. After paying the ‘Sadaqat-ul-fitr’, the Muslims are required to proceed to an open place where they can offer ‘Eid prayer collectively. In this way, they are supposed to present themselves before their Creator and offer two rak’ats of this special type of Salaah, which makes them receive blessings from Allah and start their celebration by these divine blessings. After the Salaah also, they are supposed to rejoice the day in a responsible manner, without violating the limits prescribed for them and never indulging in the acts prohibited by Allah. Keeping this point in view, we will now discuss specific rules prescribed for observing the day of ‘Eid-ul-Fitr.
The Night preceding ‘Eid-ul-Fitr’ It had been the practice of the Holy Prophet that he did not sleep in the night preceding the day of ‘Eid ul –fitr. This night has been named in a Hadith as, ‘THE NIGHT OF REWARD’. It means that Allah Almighty bestows his rewards to those who have spent the month of Ramadhan abiding by the dictates of Shari ‘ah, and all their prayers in this night are accepted. Therefore, it is desirable to perform nafl prayers in this night. The Holy Prophet is reported to have said: “Whoever stands up (in worship) in the nights preceding the two Eids expecting rewards from his lord, his heart will not die when the other hearts will die. To benefit from this opportunity, one should perform as much worship in this night as he can, and should pray for all his needs and desires. Before going to ‘Eid Prayer The following acts are prescribed as Sunnah at the beginning of the day of Eid-ul-Fitr before proceeding to the ‘Eid prayer: 1. To wake up early in the morning. 2. To clean one’s teeth with a Miswaak or a brush. 3. To have a bath. 4. To put on one’s best available clothes. 5. To wear perfume. 6. To eat a sweet food, preferably dates, before the ‘Eid prayer. 7. To recite the following Takbir in the low voice while going to the ‘Eid prayer: “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha ilal lahu wal allahu akbar, allahu akbar wa lilla hil hamnd.” Sadaqat-ul-fitr Sadaqat-ul-fitr is an obligation for every Muslim, male or female, who owns 613.35 grams of silver or its equivalent, either in the form of money, ornaments, stockin-trade or in the form of some goods or commodities beyond one’s normal needs. Every person who owns such an amount has to pay Sadaqat-ul-fitr, not only on behalf of himself but also on behalf of his minor children. The prescribed amount of Sadaqatul-fitr is 1.75 kilograms of wheat or its value in money. This amount is prescribed for paying Sadaqat-ul-fitr for one person only. If a person has some minor children, the same amount has to be paid on behalf of each one of them separately. The following points must be remembered with regard to the payment of Sadaqat-ul-fitr. 1. Sadaqat-ul-fitr is obligated on each adult male or female separately, and the relevant adult person himself is responsible to pay it. The husband is not required to pay Sadaqat-ul-fitr on behalf of his wife nor is the wife supposed to pay it on behalf of her husband. Similarly, a father is not bound to pay Sadaqat-ul-fitr on behalf of his adult children or vice versa. However, if the head of the family, by his own free will, wishes

Congratulations to the S&R specialists By: Joyce Murray, MP Liberal Party of Canada Critic for Small Business and Tourism On August 4, the Kitsilano Search and Rescue (S&R) base once again proved its effectiveness at dealing with marine emergencies as Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) specialists were first on the scene after a cruise ship carrying 250 passengers collided with two boats during a fireworks show in Vancouver’s English Bay. I wish to offer my congratulations to the S&R specialists for their quick and effective response. Their longstanding commitment to keeping the people of Vancouver’s harbour safe is cause for celebration and admiration. Unfortunately, the federal government made a decision
&
to close this base in 2013, for minimal cost savings. The recent incident in English Bay highlights the necessity to keep the base open. Thankfully, the collision did not result in any serious injuries, but Coast Guard responders arrived quickly, ready to respond to any crisis. Kitsilano S&R specialists provide an essential emergency response service in some of the nation’s busiest waterways. If the government decides to go ahead with the base closure, the nearest response team will be stationed 17 nautical miles away in Richmond—which means longer response times, especially in rough weather, and greater chance of disaster. At my recent community meeting on the issue of the closure, citizens as well as marine safety professionals emphasized the importance of the base to Vancouver’s safety. To this end, I introduced a motion in the House
to pay Sadaqat -ul-fitr for each one of the members of his family, he should seek their authorisation for that purpose. In this case the Sadaqat-ul-fitr paid by him will be valid on their behalf. If he did not pay Sadaqatul-fitr on behalf of his family, he will not be responsible for it. Rather, it is the duty of every adult member of the family to discharge his own obligation or request the head of the family to pay it on his or her behalf. 2. It is a Sunnah that the Sadaqat-ul-fitr is paid before performing the ‘Eid prayer. It can also be paid before the ‘Eid day, but it is not advisable to delay it up to the performance of ‘Eid prayer. However, if a person has failed to pay on its proper time, he should pay it as soon as possible, whereupon the obligation will stand discharged. 3. The Sadaqat-ul-fitr is not necessary on behalf of a child who has been born after the break of dawn in the ‘Eid day, nor is it necessary to pay Sadaqat-ul-fitr on behalf of person who dies before the dawn of the ‘Eid day. 4. Sadaqat-ul-fitr should only be paid to a person who is entitled to receive Zakah. The ‘Eid prayer The second obligation on ‘Eid day is to perform the ‘Eid prayer. Some rules in this respect are mentioned hereunder: 1. The ‘Eid prayer is waajib (obligatory) on every male Muslim. 2. The ‘Eid prayer can be performed any time between the ishraq and zawal. 3. It is preferable that the ‘Eid prayer is performed at an open field and not in a mosque. However, if, it is difficult to perform it in an open field, it can also be performed in a big mosque. 4. It is not advisable to hold the ‘Eid prayer in every mosque, rather it is preferable that the people of several mosques either perform it in an open field or, in its absence, in a big mosque which can accommodate a large number of people. 5. No Nafl Salaah can be performed before the ‘Eid prayer, neither in ones home, nor at the place of ‘Eid prayer. Similarly, Nafl prayer cannot be performed after the ‘Eid prayer at the same place. However, it can be performed after one comes back to his home. 6. The ‘Eid prayer has neither Azaan nor iqamah. 7. The ‘Eid prayer has two rakaah to perform in the normal way with the only addition of six Takbirs, three of them in the beginning of the first rakaah, and three of them just before ruku in the second rakaah. Khutbah: The address of ‘Eid-ul-fitr In this Salaah, Khutbah is a Sunnah and is delivered after the Salaah, unlike the Salaah of Jumuah where it is farz and is delivered before the Salaah . However, listening to the Khutbah of ‘Eid Salaah is waajib or neces-
Narrated ‘Abdullah bin Hisham: We were with the Prophet and he was holding the hand of ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab. ‘Umar said to Him, “O Allah’s Apostle! You are dearer to me than everything except my own self.” The Prophet said, “No, by Him in Whose Hand my soul is, (you will not have complete faith) till I am dearer to you than your own self.” Then ‘Umar said to him, “However, now, by Allah, you are dearer to me than my own self.” The Prophet said, “Now, O ‘Umar, (now you are a believer).”
sary and must be heard in perfect peace and silence. It is a Sunnah that the Imam begins the first Khutbah by reciting Takbirs ‘ Allahu Akbar‘ nine times and the second Khutbah with reciting it seven times. Note: The way of ‘Eid prayer described above is according to the Hanafi school of Muslim jurists. Some other jurists, like Imam Shafi, have other ways to perform it. They recite Takbir twelve times before beginning the recitations from the Holy Qur’an in both the rakaahs. This way is also permissible. If the Imam , being of the Shafi School , follows this way, you can also follow him. Both ways are based on the practice of the Holy Prophet . Six Fasts in the Month of Shawwal It is commendable to keep six fasts in the month of Shawwal. The Holy Prophet has said: “Whoever completes the fasts of Ramadhan then adds to them the fasts of six days in the month of Shawwal, it will carry the thawab of fasting for the whole year.” (Sahih Muslim) This Hadith had described the great thawab of six fasts of this month. The scholars have interpreted this Hadith by saying that according to the recognised rules of Shari‘ah, every good deed is rewarded ten times more thawab of its origin, therefore, the thawab of 30 days of Ramadhan amounts to the thawab for 300 days. If the fasts of Ramadhan are followed by six more fasts, they carry the thawab of 60 days more, raising the aggregate thawab to 360 which is the number of dais in one year according to the Islamic calendar. Therefore, the Muslims should take this opportunity of acquiring such an enormous reward from Allah. It is more preferable to start these fasts from the 2 nd of Shawwal and keep fasting up to the 7 th of Shawwal. However, if they are kept in other days, it is hoped that the requirement of the above Hadith may also be fulfilled.
O P I N I O N S of Commons, motion M-396, calling on the government to recognize the importance of the Kitsilano CCG base to the area’s emergency preparedness, and to retain its current operational level. This is not a partisan issue—it is about public safety. The government must not wait for disaster to strike to acknowledge the need for skilled S&R responders at the Kitsilano base. They should move immediately to reverse their decision, which otherwise will result in preventable deaths merely to save a few dollars.

Taliban claim attack on Minhas base; nine militants killed The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for an attack on a Pakistani military airbase early Thursday, which left 10 people dead, including a soldier, and damaged at least one Air Force aircraft. The militant assault renews questions about security at key
military installations, particularly at a base which has been attacked before. Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan claimed nine heavily armed TTP militants stormed the PAF Minhas airbase at Kamra, located about 70 kms from the capital Islamabad in Punjab’s Attock city, sparking an intense gun battle lasting almost five hours. “The attack was launched from two different sides. A team of four members entered from one side and five from the other and than they launched a collective attack inside the camp,” Ehsan told Dawn.com, speaking from an undisclosed location, confirming that all nine attackers were killed in the assault. The militant spokesman further claimed that they had achieved their targets and killed “more than a dozen security personnel” inside the base. PAF officials also confirmed all nine militants had been killed, however, they said only one Pakistani soldier, Mohammad Asif, had lost his life in the attack. The Taliban spokesman also claimed the attackers had destroyed three JF-17 thunder aircraft as well. PAF officials said that only one of aircraft at the base was damaged in the attack. Several squadrons of fighters and surveillance planes are believed to be housed at Kamra’s Minhas base. Officials also confirmed that over 30 planes were parked at the
base, including state-of-the-art JF-17 Thunder fighter jets. The airbase is a heavily guarded compound with the air force’s Kamra Aeronautical Complex also in its vicinity, where Pakistan assembles and overhauls JF-17 Thunder fighter jets in collaboration with China. According to reports, at least 11 Chinese engineers were working at the Kamra Aeronautical Complex. All Chinese and others foreign engineers and technicians involved in co-production of Chinese and Pakistan JF-17 Thunder aircraft project were shifted to a high profile secure location, official sources told Dawn.com, adding that the engineers were not present near the attack area. Base commander, Air Commodore Muhammad Azam, who led the operation against the attackers, was wounded, but is in stable condition, said the spokesman. One other security official also received injuries.Taliban spokesman Ehsan claimed the militant organisation had carried out the attack “to avenge the deaths of Osama bin Laden, the TTP Amir Baitullah Mehsud and other fighters who had been killed by the Pakistani security forces.” Pakistani forces are fighting a challenging war on their soil against Islamist militants based, including al Qaeda and its offshoots and Pakistan’s own version of Taliban militants. The spokesman claimed the Taliban would continue to target security installations “until the establishment of a true Islamic state in Pakistan.” (Source: Dawn)

Imran Tipu, B.Sc. Civil Eng This article is regarding the demand of skilled trade professionals in North America. However, we shall mainly focus on Canadian demand here and in succeeding articles; I will explain the educational requirements and job descriptions of some of the most demanded professional trade occupations in Canada. Professional Career Careers in this area are available from the skilled trades to one of a trades instructor. In order to acquire a career, first check out the list of the top hot jobs and discover the positions that are in demand across Canada. If you’re stuck in temporary/part-time jobs as a security person, cab driver, delivery driver or courier and want real career, or if you are going to decide what to study then you should be prepared to change in work. Read about what trades’ professions are booming. If you have the training and aptitude for one of these gigs, you can expect good money and a relatively high amount of job security. And remember, the average worker changes careers -- not jobs, but careers -- three to seven times. So don’t be afraid to change your career. Skilled Tradesperson If you don’t want an office job, but do want a salary that pays above the national average, this is the sector for you. Unfortunately (or fortunately for you, depending on how
you look at it), the skilled trades have suffered stigmatization for a generation. As a result, a shortage of trades people is looming in the service (chefs, horticulturalists), construction (roofers, electricians, carpenters, plumbers, Framers), transportation (aviation technicians, automotive service technicians) and manufacturing (industrial mechanics, tool and die makers) sectors. Note: In the next two decades, 40 per cent of new jobs are supposed to be in the skilled trades and technologies. Considerations before making career shift Considering a new career? If so, know that it takes a well thought-out plan to make a successful shift. You’ll want to examine your current situation along with the expected outcomes and possibilities connected with changing careers before you jump ship. To assess if a career change is right for you, keep these tips in mind:
1. Market demand Changes in technology and new ways of doing business are challenging our assumptions about how we work. Labor market information can help you find out about the latest job trends, which sectors are booming, and what shifts are occurring.
2. Location
Internet. 4. Personal commitments Think about your responsibilities to the significant others in your life. What impact will a new career have on them? What are you willing to give up? What is non-negotiable? Where might you compromise?
5. Cultural background Examine if there are cultural expectations around working in a certain field. What impact are these beliefs having on you? Are they limiting you or freeing you to try something else? For example if you are a Muslim and only eat and cook Halal food then your religious limitations may limit your success as a chef, perhaps, here in western world where it is a professional requirement in the hotel industry for the cooked food to be tested by a supervising chef.
6. Lifestyle Will a career change meet your lifestyle needs? Determine if your new career will pay you enough to live the kind of life you want. Google the phrase “salary wizard” or “salary calculator” to find useful websites with wage information. 7. Personality Self-awareness is a key when contemplating a career change since understanding your personality characteristics can help you find the career you love. In fact, your personality will flourish better with certain jobs than others. When examining your personality, be sure to evaluate your strengths, values and learning style. Consider, as well, how you relate to others and how you respond to opportunities. For instance, are you outgoing or reserved? Are you risk averse or risk tolerant?
Decide if you are willing to move. Career changers who are willing to relocate, stand a better chance of landing work. Plus, in some 8. gauge how big or small the gap is between where you are and where you want to be, ask yourself: “What special abilities and awareness do I have?” and “What skills and knowledge am I developing?”
9. Experience Discover how different encounters have shaped and prepared you. Look at your jobs, social activities and Volunteer positions along with your family and educational involvement. To get you thinking about those parts of your life – both past and present – that will move you into your new career, list at least three significant achievements you have had in the following areas: personal, vocational, relational, spiritual and educational.
10. Passion Identify career choices that ignite and inspire you. Find a quiet place and jot down five things that you are passionate about. 66th Independence Day of Pakistan Celebrated at Pakistan House Surrey
On Aug 14, a beautiful Flag Hoisting ceremony was held at Pakistan House. A number of Pakistani community members came to celebrate the 66th Pakistan Independence Day at Pakistan House in Surrey. This event was organised by the Pakistan Canada Association (PCA). Mr. Raza Mirani, General Secretary of PCA conducted this program. Maulana A. L. Naumani recited Surah Qadr of Holy Quran. Mr. Arfan Malik, president of PCA thanked the community who joined PCA to commemorate the historical Independence of Pakistan in 1947. Chief Guest Consul General of Pakistan Mr. Shuja Alam highlighted the progress of many public institutions of Pakistani Government in the past and future developments plans. The event was truly a family event as the pakistani Flag was hoisted by the men and the Canadian Flag was raised by the women while children sang along with the National Anthems of Pakistan and Canada played on stereo. Note: Last year in its Aug 26 edition, the Miracle pointed out that the flag hoisting ceremony was not held due to the month of Ramadan. Allhumdulillah, the message was well-received and this ceremony showed that the organising committee has realised that regardless of fasting, this is an important act and people can join in as they wish. The Pakistani Canadian community continues to prove that they maintain and celebrate their Pakistani heritage and make it a priority. A job well done!

STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA ON THE 65TH ANNIVERSARY OF PAKISTAN’S INDEPENDENCE Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to mark the 65th anniversary of Pakistan’s independence on August 14th: “Today I extend my best wishes upon the 65th anniversary of Pakistan’s independence, which also coincides with the establishment of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Canada. “Canada is home to a vibrant community of Canadians of Pakistani heritage, who continue to make significant contributions to our nation’s cultural, political and economic life. “On this special occasion, we reflect on these contributions as we celebrate together the longstanding ties between Canada and Pakistan. “On behalf of all Canadians, Laureen and I would like to wish Pakistanis, as well as Canadians of Pakistani descent, a happy and festive Pakistan Independence Day.”
Statement by the Honourable Jim Karygiannis, MP Scarborough-Agincourt and Liberal Critic for Multiculturalism I would like to extend my best wishes to members of the Canadian Pakistani community on the occasion of Pakistan Independence Day, also known as Yom-e-Azadi. On August 14, 1947, Pakistan gained its independence from what was known, at the time, as British Raj or British rule. The national holiday is celebrated throughout Pakistan with much fanfare - flag raising ceremonies; tributes to national heroes; cultural presentations; concerts, the changing of the guard at the Wagah Border between Pakistan and India; and, fireworks. Members of the Canadian Pakistani community mark Pakistan Independence Day by sharing their heritage with their fellow Canadians as a way to promote greater understanding between communities. I have been to Pakistan many times since I became a Member of Parliament. In September 2010, I travelled there with a group of Canadian doctors who went to help flood victims. In February 2008, I went to Pakistan as an International Election Observer. In monitoring the federal and provincial elections, I saw the people of Pakistan assert their democratic right and their wish for a prosperous and peaceful Pakistan. Canada and Pakistan have good relations in many areas including trade and investment; governance and human rights; and, development. Canada is a proud multicultural nation that embraces a wide variety of cultures and heritages. Canadians of Pakistan heritage help to foster this identity and strengthen the fabric of our society.
MP Jinny Sims on Pakistan’s 65th Independence Day
Today, I extend heartfelt congratulations to the people of Pakistan as well as people of Pakistani origin living in Canada on the anniversary of Pakistan’s independence. Since their independence in 1947, the people of Pakistan have worked to build a strong nation that honours their distinct culture and history. On this joyous occasion, I join with my fellow New Democrats in celebrating the anniversary of Pakistan’s birth, and we renew our commitment to working with the people of Pakistan and Canadians of Pakistani origin to promote greater peace and prosperity for Pakistan and the region.

August 14th 2012 marks the 65th anniversary of the Independence of Pakistan, certainly a joyous occasion for all of us to celebrate and remember. On this day we celebrate Pakistan’s past and birthplace of many great philosophers, musicians and artists. We are blessed in this multicultural nation, especially in Surrey, with such strong links to Pakistan. The South Asian community in British Columbia has enriched our social fabric and strengthens our diverse Canadian identity. South Asian’s of Pakistani origin of all ages continue to make a tremendous and positive impact in the community, whether they be elders sharing their experience and wisdom or the volunteer spirit provided by youth. It is because I believe that celebrating Pakistan’s Independence Day preserves a significant and vitally important cultural link to the past, for both present and future generations, that I wish everyone peace and prosperity on this 65th anniversary of Pakistan’s Independence. Warmest regards, Raj Hundal

A Message from the Premier
As Premier of the Province of British Columbia, I would like to extend my best wishes to the Muslim community, as you participate in the month of Ramadan, as well as everyone contributing to and supporting the 6th Annual Ramadan Spirit. Once again, Al Jamia Masjid Vancouver, the Pakistan-Canada Association, and their community partners have worked hard to ensure that this food drive is a tremendous success. Not only is the annual Ramadan Spirit campaign an excellent way to bring the community together, but it is also a great initiative to combat hunger in Vancouver. Your support and presence today will mean a lot to individuals and families in need. Thank you for donating your time to this project.
Sincerely,
Christy Clark Premier
unites the entire Muslim world in celebration and calls for social harmony and cohesion. EID GREETINGS FROM MUSLIM BUSINESS COUNCIL Feroz Dean(Chairman MBC) The Muslim Business Council of British Columbia would like to wish our brothers and sisters in the Muslim Community, and our friends, neighbors and colleagues across this province, best wishes and blessings on this auspicious occasion of Eid-ul Fitr. Over the course of the past month, Muslims around the world have spent the Holy Month of Ramadan fasting during daylight hours, while maintaining a state of heightened spiritual conscienceless and devotion. It is our hope that the important lessons learned during Ramadan stay with us throughout the entire year, and that we as Muslim Canadians are able to implement these lessons to contribute positively to our society. Eid, which is a day of celebration, is very sacred to our Muslim community. However, we invite our fellow citizens from all faiths to join us in enjoying the festivities, food and community gathering that Eid brings. Celebrating and recognizing the days of significance of our respective faiths is a way to work towards unity and greater understanding among us. Our organization represents Muslim professionals, businesses and students who are striving to contribute to Canadian society in a meaningful way. We wish our members a blessed Eid, and remind all of our brothers and sisters to remember, even in this time of celebration, those around us and abroad who are less fortunate and suffering from the effects of poverty, illness and global strife.

Eid – the British Columbian way!
By Kazim Jafary With the holy month of Ramadan coming to an end, I just sat down to think what’s next? Well, besides many other things including Vancouver’s endlessly depressing winter rain not far away there’s one thing definitely around the corner – Eid. After a month of long demanding hours of fasting, Eid comes like a lotto jackpot for many – pots would be full of wide variety of yummy but mostly unhealthy fattening foods for Muslims in general and Pakistanis in particular. That’s why all I hear from my Pakistani friends during this last week of fasting are the news, invites and plans of potluck meals on and around Eid. No one called me with a bold idea to hike The Lions on the next day of Eid. Some of you might even be wondering what ‘The Lions’ are. I agree there’s no harm in eating but what raises questions in my mind is the way we look at Eid simply as an opportunity to eat abundantly and repeatedly. Of course, no offence is intended especially to those dear friends who extended the heartiest invitations to join congregational potluck dinners on Eid. But the idea is to look at this occasion in a different way and I humbly dare to share my perspective. Traditionally, back in Pakistan, we all have spent the three days of Eid, taruu and
maruu, meeting family and friends, spending time together in living, dining and drawing rooms, mostly sitting, eating and gossiping. The food deficit of thirty days would more or less be compensated in a matter of three days – job well done. No doubt any celebration is incomplete without eating all sorts of stuff which are not included in our routine menu and laughing on silly little jokes which we might not find funny in the middle of a busy weekday. So I agree one cannot totally minus the eating aspect but curtailing it intelligently might be achievable. Eating less and eating healthy might be a good starting point. For a change, why not think of having farm fresh handpicked organic BC blueberries as breakfast after Eid prayer; seriously. While we are blessed with the opportunity to live in this beautiful place called British Columbia why not try some healthy things which locals do. For example, outdoor activities. Imagine celebrating Eid this year, as outdoor as possible. For some of us leaving the cosy comfort of a couch along with the handiness of a ‘Jadoo’ remote control just to go out for a walk in the park might be an uphill task. For others, hiking Grouse Grind on Eid day might be adventurous and thinkable; I don’t know what’s your cup of tea but what I firmly believe is that this place once rightly called ‘The Best Place on Earth’ offers huge opportunities of healthy and exciting outdoor activities and trust me the list is so long that it’s indeed beyond the scope of this article. From kayaking, canoeing, sailing, walking, jogging, hiking, biking, camping, fishing, river rafting, rock climbing, cave exploring, bungee jumping, ziplining, gliding, skydiving to a leisurely long drive on the
scenic sea-tosky highway, there should be something to inspire you and your family beyond a bowl of sheer-khurma or a plate of biryani. Trust me Allah Almighty won’t be angry if you didn’t have sawaiyan on this Eid. Simply, the idea is to find that ‘something’ which can wake up the child in you turned
to sleep mode long time ago and let’s celebrate Eid 2012 in an exciting, fun-tastic and memorable way which you and your family can cherish for years to come. Eid Mubarik to all – fun be upon you. Comments are welcome along with ideas on how to celebrate Eid differently: kazim@kazimjafary.com

Over 100K raised for Ahel Sunna wal Jamaat Masjid in BC by ISSC
The Islamic Supreme Council of Canada, Calgary-based organization, established its chapter in BC many years ago. On Aug 11, it successfully raised over hundred thousand dollars for the Ahel e Sunnah wal Jamaat Masjid in British Columbia. Prof. Badiauddin Soharwardhy, head of ISCC has been coming to Surrey once every month from Calgary for his monthly Darse e Quran in Surrey which is organised by the dedicated committee members of ISSC BC Chapter. At this Ramadan session of Darse e quran held at Pakistan House, Syed Soharwardhy described the necessity of this new Ahel
e Sunna Masjid in British Columbia. He mentioned that after the very successful fundraising in a very short time before Iftar Dinner, over $100,000 were raised. At this initial stage, the piece of land for the Mosque’s location is under consideration and among them are some lots in Surrey and its surroundings. A number of Muslim community members showed their interest to build a new place for Ahel e Suunah wal Jamaat in lower mainland. The location will be announced in one of the future Darse e Quran session in Pakistan House.
dialogue who’s had the opportunity to meet with the Pope to discuss these issues. We’re very proud to have you here. They are educators like Auysha Muhayya, born in Afghanistan, who fled with her family as refugees to America, and now, as a language teacher, helps open her students to new cultures. So we’re very pleased to have her here. They are entrepreneurs and lawyers, community leaders, members of our military, and Muslim American women serving with distinction in government. And that includes a good friend, Huma Abedin, who has worked tirelessly -worked tirelessly in the White House, in the U.S. Senate, and most exhaustingly, at the State Department, where she has been nothing less than extraordinary in representing our country and the democratic values that we hold dear. Senator Clinton has relied on her expertise, and so have I. The American people owe her a debt of gratitude -- because Huma is an American patriot, and an example of what we need in this country -- more public servants with her sense of decency, her grace and her generosity of spirit. So,on behalf of all Americans, we thank you so much. These are the faces of Islam in America. These are just a few of the Muslim Americans who strengthen our country every single day. This is the diversity that makes us Americans; the pluralism that we will never lose. And at times, we have to admit that this spirit is threatened. We’ve seen instances of mosques and
synagogues, churches and temples being targeted. Tonight, our prayers, in particular, are with our friends and fellow Americans in the Sikh community. We mourn those who were senselessly murdered and injured in their place of worship. And while we may never fully understand what motivates such hatred, such violence, the perpetrators of such despicable acts must know that your twisted thinking is no match for the compassion and the goodness and the strength of our united American family. So tonight, we declare with one voice that such violence has no place in the United States of America. The attack on Americans of any faith is an attack on the freedom of all Americans. No American should ever have to fear for their safety in their place of worship. And every American has the right to practice their faith both openly and freely, and as they choose. That is not just an American right; it is a universal human right. And we will defend the freedom of religion, here at home and around the world. And as we do, we’ll draw on the strength and example of our interfaith community, including the leaders who are here tonight. So I want to thank all of you for honoring us with your presence, for the example of your lives, and for your commitment to the values that make us “one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. God bless you. God bless the United States of America. Source: http://www.whitehouse.gov

Keeping Ramadan Spirits Alive 10 tips to help you keep those Ramadan habitss Ramadan was great for Sarah. She actually started praying five times a day on time. But once the blessed month is over she fears the momentum, drive and motivation that kept her going will fade out. Sarah is worried that this good habit might not last. But it doesn’t have to be that way. In fact, a number of psychologists agree that a person needs about three weeks to develop a good habit. If you’ve been praying regularly, fasting, controlling your temper, trying to be more patient, or keeping any other good habit during Ramadan, you’re almost sure, Insha Allah, to keep up with it afterwards. Nonetheless, we all slip up. As well, the drive that pushes us to do good in Ramadan is usually not as strong the rest of the year. Here are a few things you can do to maintain the good habits you picked during Ramadan: 1. Make Dua It was Allah who gave you the ability to keep the good habit in Ramadan, and only He can help you maintain it afterwards. Make Dua that Allah helps you not only keep the habit, but that He accepts it and makes it a way for you to grow in closeness to Him. 2. Make it a habit If you want to keep good habits, you’ve got to make sure they remain part of your daily schedule. For instance, fasting. Did you know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) encouraged fasting on Mondays and Thursdays? He said: A man’s deeds are reported (to Allah) on Mondays and Thursdays and I prefer that I should be fasting when my deeds are reported (Tirmidhi). This is a great way of maintaining the habit so you’re not rusty by next Ramadan. Or for example, were you extra generous during Ramadan? Well, maybe you can portion out a set amount of your weekly or monthly paycheck to a charitable cause to maintain the habit of giving. Make the habit part of your daily and weekly schedule. The point is to keep the action in practice, and of course gain rewards from Allah. 3. Think about your day each night Evaluating ourselves, our intentions, words and actions, every night is a very good way to maintain good habits (see a sample selfevaluation form). Self-evaluation doesn’t only help you see where you are and where you’ve got to go. It’s also a great reminder of what you were supposed to do and didn’t. Add a question or two (or three or four) about your specific habit into a daily selfevaluation questionnaire. Ask yourself, for instance, how often did I pray today? What was the quality of my prayer? Did I pray on time? etc. These serve to remind you to keep up the habit and do better next time. 4. Evaluate yourself weekly This helps you see the bigger picture. You’ll be able to evaluate on a more longterm level how well you’ve been keeping your habit in practice. You can do the same thing on a monthly and yearly basis. For those who are really into the technical aspect of self-evaluation, maybe you can make a graph to help you chart how well (or not so well) you’ve been keeping up with your good habit. 5. Get a friend to help What are friends for anyway? If you’ve
got a close friend you feel you can share your new habit with, let them join you in keeping up with it and keeping tabs on you while they’re at it. This will not only encourage you, but Insha Allah, it’ll deepen your brother/sisterhood as well. Alternatively, look for groups where you can maintain the habit. If, for instance, you memorized Quran regularly in Ramadan and want to keep the habit, join an Islamic study circle focused on memorization. 6. Don’t fall apart once you make one mistake The beauty of Tawbah (repentance) in Islam, is that Allah blesses us with this opportunity to return back to Him after doing something wrong. We should remember that we are humans and that we will err. Only Allah is Perfect. This is why, for instance, if we were able to pray on time all through Ramadan, but become slack afterwards, we must realize it, seek Allah’s forgiveness sincerely, and try our best to get back on track, asking Allah to help us. We should not give up trying to pray on time just because we have missed doing so on a couple of occasions. 7. Ask yourself WHY you kept the habit Niyyah or intention is a key to Allah’s acceptance of our good deeds. If we developed a habit to impress others, for instance, we may be able to keep the momentum for a while, but most probably it’ll wear out afterwards. But if we maintained a habit sincerely for the sake of Allah, Insha Allah, not only will we be rewarded for it, but our intention will help us maintain the necessary motivation to continue to do good. 8. Don’t expect the same results If you were ready to spring out of bed in anticipation for Fajr during many of the days of Ramadan, but find yourself barely waking up for the prayer afterwards, don’t be surprised, but don’t become slack either. Good habits are often easy to maintain in Ramadan, the blessed month. The hard part is doing so after the “high” of Ramadan. This is where you’ll have to work hard to force yourself to maintain your habit, whether it’s waking up for Fajr, not smoking, eating less, being more patient, etc. Be thankful when you’re able to maintain your habit and think about practical things you can do to keep it up on a regular basis. 9. Work your way up slowly Aisha reported that Rasulullah said: Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately, and remember that you shall enter Paradise only through Allah’s Mercy, and also remember that the most beloved deed to Allah is that which is regular and constant even if it is little (Bukhari). The wisdom in this Hadith is tremendous and it is one way of keeping up good habits you have picked up in Ramadan. For example, let’s say you were motivated to read Quran for half-an-hour on a daily basis in Ramadan. But now that it’s over, you feel sluggish, lazy and want to give it up. Yet, you had wanted to maintain this habit after the blessed month was over. Instead of trying to read Quran for the same amount of time, reduce the time period to as much as you are initially able to do, even if it’s just five minutes a day. If you keep up this ‘five minutes a day’ habit, Insha Allah, you will see the amount of Quran you read will increase slowly but
gradually, perhaps even surpassing your Ramadan maximum in the long-term, Insha Allah! 10. Don’t give yourself the option What makes you get up for work in the mornings, no matter how tired you are? What makes you drag yourself out of a warm bed on a cold morning to get ready for school? It’s the fact that you have no option, and you know that there are negative consequences to not going to work (you’ll be fired) or school (you’ll fail). Use the same kind of psychology on
yourself when it comes to maintaining your good habit. Tell yourself, for instance, that Allah will be very angry with you if you do not pray Fajr, no matter how cold your room is on a frosty December morning. That in turn can lead to more bad deeds, which could lead to decreased faith, and a downward spiral in your life. And Allah can punish you in various ways in this world as well as the next for not praying. You could lose your job; you could have a family crisis, etc.

Medical and Health Benefits of Fasting, Even After Ramadan
Hakimah Umm Tabari As Ramadan draws to a close and we approach the optional and highly rewarded post-Eid fasts during the Islamic month of Shawwal, it is encouraging to examine the ways that fasting benefits one from a physical perspective. Fasting helps the body restore homeostasis. Homeostasis is the near perfect balance that is found in a healthy body. It is the normal interaction between all of the systems and organs. Disruption of this state leads to the development of illness and disease. When one fasts during the prescribed time period, the body is able to perform it‚s various functions unhampered by the demands placed on it by the constant eating and drinking of snack food, devitalized fast food, sodas, and other things that do not support the heath of the human body. As this homeostasis is restored, the delicate interplay between systems is kicked up a notch and fine-tuning of body functions begins. This restorative process allows for the strengthening of the immune systemˆ the all-important system in the body that protects one from becoming a victim to the manifold pathogens (bacteria, viruses, etc.) that are ever-present in the environment. Fasting provides rest for the digestive and metabolic systems. The Islamic fasting requires that one meal taken in the predawn hours and another after sunset. Since a lunar calendar is used, this time period changes from year to year so one may fast anywhere from 13 hours to 18 hours, depending on the season. Since absolutely no food or drink is taken during this time the body has the opportunity to work on breaking down and eliminating excess food, stored fat, and extra cellular debris, in essence „cleaning house.‰ It is important to note that in order to gain these benefits one must protect the body against the extravagance of huge sehri (pre-dawn) meals and iftari meals that are heavily laden with fats and sugars and are difficult to digest. It is necessary to maintain a balanced diet during this time to aid the body in its work. Equally important is to get as much water between iftar and sleeping and with suhur, to ward off dehydration, especially if the fasting day is long or very hot. Fasting can be a weight management tool. While the main focus of Ramadan is to receive the most spiritual benefit possible from the fasting, prudent preparation of the meals taken can allow one to moderate their eating habits and lose
Islamic : Continued from pg 1 “We suspend Syria’s membership in the OIC and in all its subsidiaries.” The decision resulted from the resolve of the Muslim heads of state to take a united stand alongside the oppressed Syrian people. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nizar Obaid Madani said the focus of the summit was on Islamic solidarity, the crisis in Syria, the genocide of Muslim Rohingyas in Myanmar and the unrest in the West African state of Mali. The summit expressed gratitude and appreciation to King Abdullah for convening with a view to strengthening Islamic solidarity and to the Saudi people and government for their hospitality. A statement released at the end of the summit said the Islamic Ummah would pursue every means to achieve unity, solidarity and mutual aid among its members and endeavor to overcome any obstacles to achieve these goals. The summit statement emphasized the question of Palestine as the central cause of the Islamic Ummah. The Muslim world leaders applauded the efforts of Saudi Arabia, under King Abdullah’s leadership, to defend Islamic holy places in Al-Quds. Ihsanoglu said it was made very clear to the Myanmar government that 1.5 billion Muslims of the world and the 57 nations of the OIC stood solidly behind the Rohingya Muslims
weight by choosing foods that are nutrition rich and avoiding high caloric, high sugar foods that one is used to snacking on throughout the day normally. Foods such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, good protein sources such as chicken, fish, beans and legumes, eggs and some dairy products like yogurt and cheese are the best sources to choose from when planning meals. Good eating habits acquired during Ramadan should be maintained after the month ends. Remember that thirty days is an excellent length of time to establish a new habit and break an old one. Studies have shown that a lower caloric intake is associated with longer life spans and many of the people studied who lived well into their 90‚s and 100‚s were people who were conservative in their eating habits and fasted regularly. Fasting provides mental and emotional stability. During Ramadan one is reminded to show restraint in all things and this causes a positive effect on one‚s mental health. Fasting causes one to become more introspective and more attentive to the spiritual aspects of life. Avoiding unhealthy practices such as smoking, drinking and overeating helps one feel healthier and happier, creating a more stable mental outlook. Poor eating habits can lead to health problems i.e., low blood sugar, headaches, insomnia, etc., that in turn lead to behavior and or attitude problems. Many fasting people report that they have more energy (especially after the first week) and feel more content and tranquil. They report being able to cope better with stresses in their lives. This feeling of tranquility leads to health benefits such as lowered blood pressure, better sleeping habits, reduction in anxiety and depression and better control of behavior. Of course much of this is due to the increased ibadah (worship) that is performed, for Enjoy that in itself is a healing.

Eid al-Fitr for the babies- how to make Eid fun for your little ones
As many Muslims today say “Eid is like our Christmas”, and in a way, it is. It is one of the two celebrations that Muslims celebrate (Eid ul Fitr and Eid ul Adha). With the busyness of Ramadhan or the fact that many want to remain focussed on the blessed month and not pre-occupied with many worldly things, it can be difficult to plan a massive shindig for Eid. But it need not be a hassle. With pre planning, internet shopping and things that you can make at home, your Eid celebration planning should be a doddle. Eid is a time for contemplation, celebration, gift giving and family and friends. It is especially important for children, especially young ones, as we should try and instil in them the importance of Eid from a young age. Children living in the west, because of a lack of understanding of Eid and usually due to the fact that some parents don’t make a big deal out of it, don’t feel Eid the way I think it should be felt. It becomes more like a “Yeh-lets-party-’cos-now-wecan-eat” type of day. Children often feel uncomfortable and bored on Eid (dressed up in scratchy clothes, masjid early in the morning, visiting endless family…) and so they can easily lose sight of the fun of Eid. So when Christmas comes around and they see the huge deal it is, inevitably, to them, it holds more importance than Eid. Which is why they need to know that some people celebrate Christmas, and it is a special time for them, and we celebrate Eid, and it is a special time for us. So, how can we make Eid fun for the little ones? How can we
make it a time they will remember? Here are some simple ideas to make planning Eid easier for you, and make it a fun time for the little ones.
School If your child is at a mainstream school, the school may not be celebrating Eid, although many schools do acknowledge different religious festivals and teach the children about it. Encourage your child to write Eid cards for their friends. You can purchase Eid cards in most Islamic bookshops, but also from Amazon .You can also buy sweets and send them into school for your child’s class, and maybe ask the teacher to put up an Eid information poster, you could encourage your child to make one.
Presents You don’t need to spend hundreds of pounds on presents, but you can find some lovely children’s gifts on www.islam4kids. com. It might also be worth looking out for sales in mainstream stores for clothes and toys (Mothercare, Early Learning Centre ). You can find wonderful gifts for adults and children here www.sirat.com. You can even encourage your child to make their own Eid cards or even presents for family members, or let them help choose presents for others, while teaching them the importance of giving gifts in Islam, and that gifts don’t have to be big or expensive. Party If the weather is nice, why not have a barbecue for Eid. Either way, a gathering of family and friends is great for everyone, not just the kids. Remember to include
non-Muslim friends/family, and invite your child’s friends also. It may be a nice touch to let your child choose a theme for the party “Eid Tea Party”, for example. With regards to food, you could help them to bake for the party, cupcakes, or a main cake.
Decorations You can buy decorations- sure. But why not let the kids to make their own? There are many websites that can give you ideas. Alternatively or together with homemade decorations, you can visit a party shop and get all of your decorations in one day. Get the kids to help decorate aswell. It will be a fun build up to the party! Party bags/party games If there will be afew children at your party, why not plan some party games and give party bags. You can tweak many traditional party games to suit your needs (ie- ‘pass the parcel’, a game in which the children pass a present to music, when the music stops the child who has the present opens one layer. There is usually a small gift between every layer. You can use children’s nasheeds for this game). You can buy anything to put in party bags or games. Things like these badges are really sweet. You can also get Islamic stickers and small books/toys for party pags. For any Londoners, there is a fabulous Islamic shop, Zam Zam, on Green Street, near Upton Park where you can purchase things like stickers and badges.
Not losing sight of the reason for Eid. Amongst the party games and food, we can
easily lose sight of why we are celebrating Eid. In order to feel the true essence of Eid, it might be worth finding somewhere where Eid salaat is prayed outside, or where there is an Eid fair, so that the family can be part of a wider community Eid celebration. When it comes to your celebration at home, a good idea is to encourage the child- prior to Eid, to write a short story about their favourite time in Ramadhan, to read to family and friends at the Eid party. Or you can encourage them to write and perform a play about Ramadhan. Something as small as (for older children) learning a new surah during Ramadhan and reciting it as an opening for the Eid party can be a lovely touch. Maybe they can recite ahadith about Eid and what we are to do on Eid, and why. This can gradually become a yearly tradition. InshaAllah (God Willing), you found this short blog post useful! I do hope that you all have a blessed Ramadhan, and an Eid full of goodness, love, joy and lots of remembrance of Allah.

Britain’s Mo Farah says he cannot describe the emotion of winning his second Olympic gold medal
Farah, who added 5,000m gold to his 10,000m title, said: “There’s no way to describe it. You imagine being Olympic champion once, then it happens twice.” BBC commentator Brendan Foster called Farah’s run “the best I’ve ever witnessed in athletics in Britain”. Foster added: “This stadium is my
favourite in the world. E v e r y Saturday night, Mo Farah wins a gold medal.” Farah, 29, saluted the home crowd for their support in his achievement of winning the two longest Olympic track races on successive Saturdays. “The crowd was inspiring. If it wasn’t for them, I don’t think I would have dug in as deep,” he said. “It just got louder and louder, it reminded me of when you go to a football match and somebody
scores a goal - wow.” Farah says he will delay a decision on whether to move up to the marathon. “I’ve still got stuff to be achieved,” he said. “I want to do more track and maybe move up to marathon, but not yet. “I’ll speak to my coach and plan it out from now. I’ve got a great team, so I won’t rush into it.” He also credited the training regime imposed by coach Alberto Salazar in bringing him to his peak in London. “I’ve been working out in the winter over 120 miles a week, week in, week out, so there were days when I got up and I was tired,” said Farah. “But when you have a vision and you have a dream, you dig in more. I’m just excited, these two medals mean a lot to me.” Farah is one of five Britons to win two golds at these Games, equalling the hauls of track cyclists Sir Chris Hoy, Jason Kenny and Laura Trott, and dressage rider Charlotte Dujardin. Farah also believes Britain’s achievements at these Games can “inspire a new generation”. He added: “I’m sure there are youngsters out there who have seen us and want to become an athlete. “There are a lot of youngsters who we can inspire.
As long as we work on that, I’m sure that we can bring them through.” Farah took 5,000m gold on Saturday by holding off Ethiopia’s Dejen Gebremeskel to win in 13 minutes 41.66 seconds, with Kenya’s Thomas Longosiwa claiming bronze. In the process, Farah added his name to the group of illustrious names who have won the 5,000m and 10,000m at the same Games. Hannes Kolehmainen of Finland achieved the feat in 1912, followed by Emil Zatopek of Czechoslovakia in 1952, Vladimir Kuts of the USSR in 1956, Finland’s Lasse Viren in 1972 and 1976, Miruts Yifter of Ethiopia in 1980 and countryman Kenenisa Bekele at Beijing four years ago. “I just want to thank everyone who’s supported me,” said Farah. “All my coaches from previous years and all the people who’ve been involved in my life. ‘Wide gap’ remains between NHL and players’ union: Bettman The NHL and its players’ association remain “far apart” in collective bargaining talks ahead of the Sept. 15 lockout deadline, league commissioner Gary Bettman said a day after the union submitted a new proposal to the league. Bettman said a counteroffer tabled Tuesday by the NHL Players’ Association, in which the game’s stars agreed to a lower percentage of league revenue, is not acceptable. “We value the proposal and what it means in terms of its economics differently than the players’ association does,” he told reporters. “And I think there are still a number of issues where we’re looking at the world differently. “There is still a wide gap between us. There is not much time to go, but this is a process that we are going to continue to work hard on.” But NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr said the unresolved bargaining issues are “club-specific.” “If there are remaining problems…we have to ask whether that’s the fault of the system,” he said, adding that it’s “not surprising” that union and management see each other’s proposals differently. Fehr also said
that players have not threatened job action and are trying to do everything they can to avoid a lockout. “There is only one party here that’s talking about Sept. 15,” he said. The union is willing to “sit and negotiate until we get the deal done,” he added. The players’ proposal came a month after the league made its first offer, which called for a 24 per cent decrease in player salaries by lowering the union’s share of revenue. The proposal also outlined new contract restrictions, including a five-year cap on contracts. The players’ counteroffer includes a proposal to delink the salary cap from hockeyrelated revenue, and instead set a fixed rate that would increase by two per cent in the first year, four per cent in the second and six per cent in the third. An option for the fourth year would allow the system to revert to the current arrangement, which gives players 57 per cent of all revenues. The union has said the thinking behind their proposal is that owners will end up making more money, which could then be partly distributed among teams that are in dire financial
straights. “We do believe that the proposal the players made today, once implemented, can produce a stable industry ... that can give us a chance to move beyond the recurring labour strife that has plagued the NHL the last two decades,” Fehr said Tuesday. The union says players could be leaving as much as $465 million on the table if the league maintains average growth over the next three years. The players’ association also said its proposal does not include significant changes to players’ contracts. Howard Bloom, publisher of Sports Business News, called the players’ proposal “innovative,” saying the revenuesharing proposal shows that the players want “to create a balanced NHL and 30 strong financial teams.” Bloom told Canada AM Wednesday that the NHL also has the option of contracting and shedding as many as six teams, including Phoenix, Florida,
Columbus and Dallas. “Those teams aren’t making it financially, and what the players want is revenue sharing to create a balanced NHL and 30 strong financial teams,” Bloom said. The league could also choose to move weak teams to stronger markets, including Quebec City, which is hungry for the return of NHL hockey. Bloom believes a lockout is likely, despite Bettman’s claim that he hopes “we can take care of business in the next month,” and get a deal by the time the current contract expires on Sept. 15. Swann: England fine without Pietersen
Pietersen was dropped by England after failing to reveal the contents of text messages allegedly sent to South African players during the draw at Headingley. The ECB had told Pietersen his selection was dependant on him confirming publicly that no derogatory texts about his team-mates had been sent to South African players, or if they
had been sent, to apologise for them. Pietersen has yet to respond to the ECB’s request, but Swann insists the saga will not impact the rest of the team when they face the Proteas on Thursday, as he wrote in his column for The Sun: “We need to pull in the same direction, not 10 of us doing it and one of us not. Just because you lose one player, it doesn’t necessarily make you a weaker team.” He added: “In fact, since Kevin retired from limitedovers cricket, we are unbeaten in all matches in the shorter formats.” The Headingley Test was the scene of one of Pietersen’s best international innings - a man-of-the-match 149. But he left Leeds under a cloud, after a post-match press conference in which he
hinted at dressing-room unrest and refused to give assurances that the Lord’s Test would not be his last. “I watched a video of Kevin’s press conference last Monday at Headingley, when he spoke about supposed problems in the dressing room,” Swann added. “I was certainly shocked by those claims. I don’t know if there were developments during the week at Headingley after I left, but it was news to me. “And, speaking to a couple of the other lads, it was news to them as well. I’d just say that, if there were issues, we pride ourselves on having a very open dressing room and he certainly didn’t mention any problems to anyone else.” Former England skipper Michael Vaughan, mean-
while, does not believe the texting controversy need bring about the end of Pietersen’s international career, but warned it could be some time before he returns to the dressing room. “If it’s true that he sent those texts, it will take a long time for him to be allowed back,” Vaughan told BBC Radio 5 Live. “It’s been a mad, but also a very sad week for the England cricket team. There are no real winners, but one very big loser and that’s Kevin Pietersen.” Source: Yahoo
