TURKEY MAY CONSIDER REFERENDUM ON PARK PLAN Just hours after the Turkish government indicated that it was open to holding a referendum on a controversial Istanbul development plan, demonstrators defied an order to end almost two weeks of protests by singing and chanting in the city’s Taksim Square. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s prime minister, said on Wednesday he would consider holding a referendum on plans to redevelop Gezi Park that have led to nationwide protests, in his first major concession. Gezi Park is a leafy corner of Taksim Square where the protesters have set up a makeshift settlement of tents. The mood in the public square on Wednesday night was subdued and peaceful, in stark contrast to the previous night when protesters fought running battles with riot police. Riot police looked on from the fringes as crowds mingled late into Wednesday night, some protesters chanting and dancing, others applauding a concert pianist who took up residence with a grand piano in the middle of the

square. Demonstrators gathered around the live piano concert intermittently chanted: “Everywhere is -Taksim, everywhere is resistance!” It was a stark contrast to the scene 24 hours earlier, when tear gas sent thousands scurrying into side streets before authorities bulldozed barricades and reopened the square to traffic for the first time since the troubles began.

Meanwhile, protesters demonstrating in the capital Ankara were once again subjected to a police crackdown, with riot police firing tear gas overnight to disperse up to 2,000 people who were clustered in Tunali Street, one of the central spots for mass anti-government rallies. Budget 2013-14: More ‘business friendly’ than people friendly The first Rs3.6 trillion budget of Nawaz Sharif government, presented by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar in the national assembly within a week of the government formation, appears more ‘business friendly’ than people friendly.

The electorate that voted Nawaz Sharif to power might not easily accept additional burden of price increases through the increase in General Sales Tax (GST) by one per cent to 17 per cent. Their reaction will set the tone of debate in the National Assembly.

The budget, if approved in the current form, may boost investment, revive growth and enable Pakistan to qualify for the IMF loan facility as it meets pre-conditions of the key donor. The man on the street, however, might find the year ahead more challenging economically as his real income declines because of the inflationary impact of the taxation measures proposed.

The government in its first defining policy move proposed people to endure the pain of adjustments now, to enjoy gains of growth later. For economic stabilisation the budget 2014 increases the GST to 17 per cent and revises upward the income tax rates, among other measures that could hit the masses.

The corporate Pakistan, which has been reluctant to invest in the country all through Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) rule during past five years resulting in depressed three per cent average growth, has been cultivated by revising downward the corporate tax rate by one per cent from 35 to 34 per cent with promise of decreasing it to 30 per cent in four years. It will increase corporate profits by neat one per cent in the next fiscal.

The government looks keen to revive the confidence of the big business to induce them to move ahead with aggressive investment plans they have been holding back for better times. “For the big boys of business in Pakistan future has arrived,” commented an analyst.

The budget is a typical PML-N document reflecting its economic philosophy of an unfettered market economy, it speaks of homework the party must have done long before assuming power as the document does not seem to be prepared in haste.

It has all those signature initiatives that are considered hallmarks of Sharif’s rule in Pakistan.

There are all kinds of low ticket initiatives for public consumption (youth internship, micro credit, income support, technical training, laptop distribution, etc) but the focus of the development budget would be on infrastructure projects (motorways and railways).

“The budget package if endorsed by the parliament will infuse confidence in the private sector that already see Nawaz Sharif as champion of market economy. I will not be surprised if by the end of the fiscal Pakistan surpasses the growth target as public and private sector investment gain steam” a senior business leader told Dawn.com over telephone.

FM Ishaq Dar proposed upward revision in GST from 16 to 17 per cent on the floor of the assembly. It would make all products dearer by at least the same percentage, though the price spiral often enhance the impact of inflationary measures and lead to more than proportional rise in prices.

He projected to chop circular debt of energy sector to reduce by as much as about half of current Rs500 billion in 60 days.

It was, however, not clear thus far how he intends to do that.

The budget assumes to cover the revenue shortfall through foreign inflows. The details of sources of these inflows are not clear.

There seems to be meek effort to encourage documentation by introducing tax incentive of two per cent for firms dealing with registered suppliers and distributors.

“The budget is in line with corporate sector expectations. It will improve the business environment as the government has respected IMF’s advice and is targeting to bring the deficit down from current 8.8 to 6.3 per cent by the end of next fiscal year, a reduction of exactly 2.5 per cent suggested,” Sayem Ali, Standard Chartered spokesperson on economic policy said commenting on the budget.

“Market will cheer cut in corporate tax rate. The GST revision will not affect companies as they will pass it on to consumers. All in all the budget 2013 is a good news for the capital market,” he added.

Pakistani experts also submitted their proposals on the proposed project. Indian Deputy High Commissioner Gopal Baglay said that there had been a peaceful transition of power in Pakistan in a democratic manner. He said the Indian government had also expressed good wishes for the PML-N government. He expressed the hope that bilateral relations between India and Pakistan will improve under the new government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Arrests made over UK Islamic centre blaze

Four teenagers have been arrested in connection with a fire at an Islamic boarding school in London, police say, as they step up patrols around Muslim sites in the UK capital. The blaze was the second suspicious fire at an Islamic institution in London following the May 22 killing of a soldier near his barracks in Woolwich. Two converts to Islam have been charged with the murder. A blaze was reported late on Saturday at the Darul Uloom Islamic High School in the southeast London suburb of Chislehurst. Two people aged 18 and two aged 17 were arrested on suspicion of arson late on Sunday and taken to a south London police station, police said on Monday. They were later bailed to return pending further enquiries. The fire caused minor damage to a building at the £3,000-a-year school and about 128 pupils and staff were evacuated.

Two people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation but did not need to go to hospital. Police say there has been a rise in “Islamophobic crime” since Lee Rigby, the soldier, was hacked to death. Detectives are investigating a fire at a Somali centre in northwest London last week. Police Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe confirmed on Monday that police were investigating two recent suspicious fires at two locations

within the Islamic community. “Fortunately no one has been hurt, but we know that fires can often prove fatal,” he said.

He said police have added officers and patrols at sensitive Islamic sites throughout London. Simon Letchford, police commander, said patrols were being increased around potentially vulnerable locations to provide reassurance and deter crime. “We are working closely with the Muslim community. We’ve put additional resources outside a number of premises which we think are vulnerable,” he told BBC radio.

He said the police were having to deal with more attacks against Muslims in the wake of Rigby’s murder, although many of the incidents were verbal abuse. “We’ve definitely seen an increase. We normally have about one Islamophobic crime a day across London. And we’ve seen [now] about eight a day. But we know it is under-reported,” Letchford said. “It tends to be name-calling, normally against individuals who are at a particular location or wearing a particular style of dress, which draws attention to them. “This is a time now for Londoners to come together after the tragic murder of Lee Rigby.”

Deadly blasts shake Syrian capital

Two suicide bombers have struck the heart of the Syrian capital Damascus, killing at least 14 people and wounding at least 31 others, according to the pro-government television channel Al-Ikhbariya. Activists said one of Tuesday’s explosions took place inside a police station and that many among the dead were policemen. A security official quoted by Al-Ikhbariya said the suicide bombers struck near a police station in the Marjeh Square in the heart of Damascus. “Two suicide bombers attacked Marjeh Square causing casualties and material damage,” the broadcaster said on Tuesday morning. The channel screened images showing badly damaged vehicles and bloodied pavements. “It seems the terrorists have struck again,” said a television presenter, using the government’s term to refer to rebels fighting President Bashar alAssad’s troops. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), which has a network of activists on the ground in Syria, said 15 were killed in the explosions, one of which was caused by a man who blew himself up inside the police station in the square. The SOHR said the other explosion occurred outside the police station Suicide and car bombs have become common in Damascus. Some of the deadliest attacks targeting security installations have been claimed by the al-Qaeda-linked Jabhat al-Nusra - one of scores of rebel factions fighting Assad’s forces.

Separately, in Aleppo province the army launched multiple attacks on rebel positions, including rebel-held areas of the key Minnigh military airbase, the SOHR said.

“Parts of Minnigh military airbase were shelled by regime forces... Rebels are in control of large swathes of the airbase,” the SOHR said on Tuesday. A military source told AFP news agency heavy clashes were raging at the base for a third day, but denied any part of the airport was under rebel control. He said the fighting was not part

of a broader campaign that the regime has pledged to launch to re-take Aleppo city, large parts of which are in rebel hands, and other parts of the province. But other areas of Aleppo were under fire, two days after pro-regime media said an army campaign in the province would began within “hours or days”. Regime forces shelled the opposition-controlled villages of Deir Hafer and Al-Bab, and hit the rebel stronghold of Marea with rockets, the Observatory said. There were unconfirmed reports of a ground-to-ground missile strike in Aleppo province, the SOHR added. Tuesday’s developments came after Gulf Arab states promised sanctions against members of Hezbollah, the mainly Shia Lebanese political and military group, in retaliation for its intervention in Syria’s ongoing civil war in support of Assad. The six Sunniled members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) issued a condemnation on Monday, according to a statement from the GCC secretariat carried by the Saudi Press Agency. “The GCC ministerial council has decided to take measures against those enlisted in the party [Hezbollah] residing in the member states, whether with regard to their residencies or their financial and commercial dealings,” it added, without giving any specific details. Saudi Arabia and Qatar, both GCC members and US allies, have been explicit in calling for Assad to go, and have been arming the mostly Sunni rebels seeking to oust him and his mostly Alawite regime, members of an offshoot of Shia Islam. The rebels suffered one of their biggest setbacks last week when Hezbollah fighters helped Assad’s forces to retake the Syrian border town of Qusayr, which controls vital supply lines. Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s leader, said last week that Syria and Lebanon faced a common threat from radical Sunni Islamists.

Christy Clark boosts maximum salaries for top aides by 18 per cent

Fresh from an election victory, Premier Christy Clark’s BC Liberal government has significantly increased the maximum salaries it can pay to its top political staff.

A cabinet order signed June 3 boosts the maximum salary that can be handed to Clark’s chief of staff by 18 per cent, up to $230,000 per year.

Clark’s deputy chief of staff can now also make up to $230,000, representing a boost of almost 60 per cent from the position’s previous cap of $144,000. Passed by Clark’s outgoing cabinet, the executive order also reclassifies the top aides to several ministers, elevating them from ministerial assistants to chiefs of staff, and allowing for a maximum salary of $105,000 — higher than the base salary now given to MLAs. So far, the government has named 17 chiefs of staff across the various ministries, with two of them making the top allowable salary. Clark refused to talk about the changes Tuesday, and the government did not say how many people had received increases as part of the restructuring. Finance Minister Mike de Jong would also not give any specific details about the changes, but said the budget remains unchanged. “The overall amount being spent on staff remains the same,” he said. “I think people understand that a new government with a new mandate and a re-elected premier may make changes of those sorts,” he added. “What they also want to know is that we are sharpening our pencils and that the budget is going to be balanced.” A spokesman in the premier’s office said the global budget for staff in ministerial offices has decreased with the restructuring, dropping to $5.711 million

from $5.741 million. He added that Clark’s chief of staff, Dan Doyle, will not be taking a raise as part of the changes. Clark has now hired her assistant campaign director, Michele Cadario, to be her deputy chief of staff. Under the new rules, Cadario will make an annual salary of $195,148.

Clark’s previous deputy chief of staff, Kim Haakstad, who resigned before the election over the ethnic outreach scandal, had been paid $149,027. Clark has also hired Nick Facey, the unsuccessful Liberal candidate from North Island, to be chief of staff to Health Minister Terry Lake. He will make $89,775 per year. New Democratic Party House leader John Horgan slammed all the changes, especially given Clark ran an election campaign based on reducing debt and controlling spending. “To give massive increases to political insiders is just plain wrong. They’re off on the wrong foot. They had an opportunity to do the right thing and they blew it,” said Horgan. “At the same time we hear the premier and her cabinet talking about austerity and restraint, we see excesses for political insiders,” he continued. “The public doesn’t like this stuff, especially in the summertime.”

It shows our adversaries what our capabilities are and it’s a giant violation of the law.” He called Snowden a “traitor.” A senior U.S. intelligence official on Monday said there were no plans to scrap the programs that, despite the backlash, continue to receive widespread if cautious support within Congress. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive security issue. The programs were revealed last week by The Guardian and The Washington Post newspapers. National Intelligence Director James Clapper has taken the unusual step of declassifying

some of the previously top-secret details to help the administration mount a public defence of the surveillance as a necessary step to protect Americans. Sen. Angus King, IMaine, who sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said he was considering how Congress could limit the amount of data spy agencies seize from telephone and Internet companies — including restricting the information to be released only on an as-needed basis. “It’s a little unsettling to have this massive data in the government’s possession,” King said. One of the NSA programs gathers hundreds of millions of U.S. phone records to search for possible links to known terrorist targets abroad. The other allows the government to tap into nine U.S. Internet companies and gather all communications to detect suspicious behaviour that begins overseas. Snowden is a former CIA employee who later worked as a contractor for the NSA on behalf of Booz Allen, where he gained access to the surveillance. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine said, it was “absolutely shocking” that a 29-year-old with limited experience would have access to this material. AG says expenses of each senator may be under microscope

The expenses of every single senator sitting in the upper chamber may be scrutinized

by Canada’s auditor general as his office begins a thorough review of the Senate.

Auditor General Michael Ferguson said he’s still very much in the early stages of an unprecedented study of Senate expenses, which was sparked by external audits of housing and living allowance claims by three senators -- Mike Duffy, Patrick Brazeau and Mac Harb -- and the travel expenses of Pamela Wallin. Ferguson appeared before the Senate Internal Economy committee Tuesday evening, as one of the first steps in the audit process. Following the meeting, Ferguson told reporters in Ottawa that he hasn’t determined whether a sample of senators will be looked at in the audit, or if his office will examine the expenses of everyone. “We still have to determine exactly what we’re going to look at, the whole scope of what we have to deal with,” he said. “But certainly one of the things we will focus on is individual Senate claims. “We will have to look at things like how long it will take to look at every single senator, how many claims are there, how far back we would go,” he

continued. Ferguson wouldn’t speculate on how long the audit would last, but said most performance audits take an average of 18 months. During that time, Ferguson said he expects to have unrestricted access to pertinent information. Ferguson acknowledged the heightened public interest currently surrounding the Senate and said his office may provide some sort of interim audit partway through the process.

Ferguson’s appearance before the Internal Economy committee came the same day as its chairman, Sen. David Tkachuk, announced he would be stepping down as he prepares to undergo preventative treatment for cancer. Tkachuk, who was appointed to the Senate in 1993 by Brian Mulroney, has chaired the committee since 2011. He is stepping down as of Thursday. The committee, which oversees the financial administration of the upper chamber, has been at the centre of a growing expense scandal.

Last month, the committee released reports based on the independent audits of housing expense claims filed by Duffy, Brazeau and Harb. Senators are entitled to a housing allowance if their primary residence is more than 100 kilometres outside of Ottawa. The

committee ordered Harb to repay about $51,000 and Brazeau about $48,000 in ineligible expenses.

Both men are fighting the orders, with Brazeau arguing that his audit concluded he met some of the “indicators” for his primary residence.

Duffy repaid about $90,000 in expenses in March, before the results of his audit were made public. In May, Sen. Leader Marjory LeBreton said she considered the matter closed. However, CTV News reported that Duffy received $90,000 to make that repayment from Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Chief of Staff, Nigel Wright. Days later, Wright resigned and Harper has maintained that he knew nothing of the deal until the CTV report aired on May 14 and Wright confirmed the deal the following morning.

There was a growing sense of dread that this time was somehow different for “Madiba,” the clan name Mr. Mandela often goes by. The sombre sen-

timent could be partly explained by the use for the first time of the word “serious” to describe his condition, and by the fact that never before during his previous illnesses had so many television satellite uplink trucks and dishes been parked outside the hospital. Scores killed in Iraq car bombings A wave of violence across Iraq has killed at least 48 people, many of them in a series of attacks in the northern city of Mosul. Twenty-eight people were killed in the city, which is populated mainly

by Sunni Arabs, when four car bombs targeted the army and police on Monday, a police official told Al Jazeera, adding that a curfew had been imposed. Three attackers were among the dead and about 80 people were wounded, the source said. Earlier in the day, car bombings hit two markets in central Iraq, killing at least 22 civilians and wounding 30 others, officials said. A police officer said three car bombs exploded virtually simultaneously, tearing through a wholesale vegetable and fruit market in the town of Jadidat al-Shatt in Diyala, just outside the provincial capital of Baquba, about 60km northeast of Baghdad. The blasts left 13 dead and more than 50 wounded among the wreckage of fruit and vegetable stalls, local officials and police said. Another car bomb hit a market in the religiously-mixed town of Taji, 20km north of Baghdad, killing at least eight more people, police and hospital sources said. A car bomb also exploded at an army base south of Kirkuk, killing one soldier and wounding six others, security sources told Al Jazeera. In Madaen town south of Baghdad, two bombs targeted a federal police checkpoint, killing three people and injuring 10 more, and in the Sadr neighbourhood in northern Baghdad a bomb exploded at a cafe, killing one and injuring eight.

“Battered Pakistan Deserves Better”

The ongoing stubborn energy crisis, the deteriorated security situation, the law and order condition, inadequate supply of clean water, a compromised quality of health & education facilities, pending incomplete infrastructure, rampant corruption, joblessness, widening ‘rich-poor gap,’ administrative paralysis, a sub standard governance and cases pending adjudication in courts for ages finally persuaded the naïve Pakistanis of narrow mindset to come out to elect their new leaders for a positive change.

This time, the voters’ turnout was officially reported as 55%, whereas instances of ‘ballot stuffing’ and ‘massive rigging’ in some constituencies were alleged to have taken place unfortunately.

Many old faces belonging to the winning political parties were again able to grab a seat or two or even three and made to the floor of the provincial or national assembly.

The PML (N) emerged as winner of more than simple majority of seats in the centre and also maintained upper hand in the Punjab province.

With Nawaz Sharif’s support, the National Party Chief Abdul Malik Baloch formed the government in Baluchistan and the PTI formed government in KPK. While the PPP now continues to govern in the province of Sindh.

Although, the PML (N) enjoys heavy mandate, and Nawaz Sharif has won his premiership with 244 solid votes, yet, it will not be that easy to deal with the messy scenario. Nevertheless, the jovial Sharif brothers’ towing skill is already in full gear to pull

the ‘sinking country’ out of the severity.

Due to difficult situation, the Nawazregime will have fun dealing with the creditors who are already knocking at the door. One of the main culprits is the “circular debt headache” which arises when one party not having adequate cash flows to discharge its obligations to its suppliers withholds all the payments.

And in so doing, the problem affects other entities adversely in the supply chain, each of which withholds its payments too. This results in operational hardships for all service providers in the sector - none of whom are then able to function at full capacity. Consequently, there occurs the load-shedding unnecessarily - of course!

Not only, the harsh ground realities keep flaring up, but a large chunk of the “inherited issues” remains a severe headache. Also, several surprises can be expected at this point in time. In fact, brain drain, capital flight and the disappearance of local businesses are all blamed on the energy crisis and the nationwide worst law & order situation. On top of that “the secretly funded Taliban” and the criminals are engaged effectively in a proxy war to damage Pakistan beyond repair.

Since, hyper-inflation and the tattered economy are the obvious results of energy crisis, the prime minister removed the Chairman WAPDA and the Heads of power distribution companies, while emphasising that incompetence or power theft would not be tolerated. So hiring and firing will be seen for quite some time

to come till the dust actually settles favourably. Accordingly, the Federal Minister Khawaja Asif has already proceeded seriously to address the menace on a top priority basis.

PM Nawaz Sharif proposed making a “common agenda” with political parties to minimise problems and stressed the need for improving ties with the neighbours in the region focusing settlement of all outstanding issues, including Jammu and Kashmir. In his policy guidelines to the Foreign Office he told the government’s immediate attention would be on improving ties with the neighbours.

“Unless the region is peaceful, our efforts for growth and development will not meet with success,” said the Prime Minister.

Giving details, a Foreign Office spokesman said the Prime Minister had greatly stressed upon the importance of regional consensus for a stable and peaceful Afghanistan.

Regarding Pak-US ties‚ the Prime Minister noted the two countries have many areas of common interest. Furthermore, by bringing the Taliban to the negotiating table for a viable peace, the current government would have greatly reduced the atmosphere of insecurity and lawlessness –paving the way for foreign investors to return with full confidence.

The relevant authorities must now work day and night to provide: 1. Clean water to the public as a big segment of the population suffers from some strain of hepatitis and other health issues due to the consumption of sewage-tainted drinking water.

2. Low-cost housing projects for low-income groups as the current house rents, land and housing prices are sky high.

3. Community centres where sportsfacilities are available for the youth to keep them mentally and physically healthy.

‘Search For A Quranic Lawyer’ By:Gulshan Aalani, Vancouver ‘Criminal Code Not Holy Book’ Terror Suspect Tells Court’.

The most shocking unusual request made by Chiheb Esseghaier the alleged Montreal terror suspect accused of plotting a terror attack on a passenger train alleged to have plotted to derail a VIA Rail train; who doesn’t recognize the Criminal Code under which he faces five serious charges, including conspiracy to commit murder: saying: “I don’t want a book written by humans, we know that this criminal code is not a holy book: it’s just written by set of creations, they are not perfect because only the Creator is perfect: and all of those conclusions was taken out based on Criminal Code and all of us know that this C.C. is not a holy book: so based on this judgment we cannot rely on the conclusions taken out from these judgments”. This sounds like coming from a mentally disturbed person who needs the treatment.

The Wall Street Journal reported: Canadian police sped up the arrests of Esseghaier, and Raed Jaser 35, in the wake of the Boston bombings. Both men have pleaded not guilty to a series of terrorism related charges.

If at all there is any truth in the allegations, the demand should

be to release the evidence, as it is a great tragedy that a young 30 yr old PhD student could get involved in such terrorist activity, who is reported a devout Muslim, and suggested he is only governed by the ‘Holy Book’, and wants a Lawyer to cite Quran, but unfortunately he can’t find such a lawyer.

It is quite silly to make such request as he is in a non-Muslim country, but is allowed to follow the law of the land, and be a law abiding citizen where ever he resides, unless it is run by notorious merciless Hitler or evil Hearted Bush the Bully, who cannot be trusted as without a second thought or without following the legal court ruling, he would push even a 15 yr old child in the hell of Guatanamo.

Other than that there shouldn’t be any fear to follow the law of the ‘authority in charge’, as in the Quran GOD has given the authority to the rulers of the land to catch the criminals and punish them, but misinterpreted by the individuals who aren’t GOD conscious at all, and take the law in their own hands and go on killing Spree.

Though, the title Muslim and terrorist do not go hand in hand, one needs to choose one title and give up the other, as the divine law orders to be a good Samari-

tan to all regardless of the color, culture or religion, and a drop of hatred against others is going to turn into a deadly disease and the evil spirit takes over the mind, body and soul.

However, any devout Muslim can be his lawyer, whose judgment and verdict would be based on the divine law/Sharia and the Case would be solved in just a few minutes, no need to waste time in the Court, or spend money on Lawyers.

Though, first of all the alleged criminal needs to take an oath on the Holy Scripture and must be prepared to speak the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, and no lies after an oath, as there would be a wrath of GOD if he lies on Oath..

If at all he is guilty of the crime then he needs to confess with all the sincerity and ask for the forgiveness of the authority and the Higher Power.

In the time of Prophet Muhammad SAWS, he forgave so many of the criminals who were caught plotting to kill him and of other criminal activities, yet defending and forgiving them for the simple reason that they didn’t recognize the divine servant, unknown of the Divine law of good and evil, and were full of hatred of the Creator-GOD as most were under the influence of the human

gods (evil spirits) and didn’t abide by the law of the land as the whole system was corrupted and lawlessness was in every corner, and so the mercy and correctness was better than the Punishment.

Unfortunately, we are not in his time but as a Muslim one is fully aware of the divine Law of good and evil, and knows the penalty of being hateful of others, terrorizing the nations, retaliating and taking revenge in such horrific manners (or dropping drones and bombs) on those who are not involved in the fight.

Sadly, the wrong action is also shown in the fight of the rebels and the Syrian authority, both are wrong as the victims are the innocent citizens whose lives are turned into hell by both who are the denial of Sharia law.

Consequently, Esseghaier needs to rely on the law of the Land and speak the truth, repent, and face the consequences of the criminal act.

F A I T H Sahih Bukhari Volume 003, Book 031, Hadith Number 204.

Narated By Mutarrif from ‘Imran Ibn Husain : That the Prophet asked him (Imran) or asked a man and Imran was listening, “O Abu so-and-so! Have you fasted the last days of this month?” (The narrator thought that he said, “the month of Ramadan”). The man replied, “No, O Allah’s Apostle!” The Prophet said to him, “When you finish your fasting (of Ramadan) fast two days (in Shawwal).” Through another series of narrators ‘Imran said, “The Prophet said, ‘(Have you fasted) the last days of Sha’ban?”

Islam prohibits sinful speech, excessive laughter ISLAM prohibits sinful speech that intends to cause harm to other human beings. It also prohibits excessive laughter or extreme humor.

People in general do not think twice about what they are saying; they forget that every word they utter is being recorded and will have to be accounted for on the Last Day. This attitude is the opposite of that required of a believer, which is described in the following Hadith: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever believes in Allah and the last day should either speak what is good or remain silent.” (Sahih Bukhari) There are many forms of sinful speech, the most common of which is gossip. Gossip can be of two types: Backbiting, which means to talk negatively about a person who is absent, even if what is being discussed is true.

The second type is slandering, which means lying while speaking negatively about others. This category includes suspicion without evidence, mockery and looking for faults in others. Allah has prohibited all of the above in the following verse: “O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is accepting of repentance and Merciful” (Qur’an, 49: 12) These sins of the tongue, which people treat lightly, are actually the root

causes of disunity among the Muslims. If we are constantly thinking negatively about, looking for faults in, and spreading rumors about our fellow Muslims, how can we ever expect our hearts to be united?

It is human nature to enjoy a good joke and laugh. Islam does not prohibit this; it does not expect us to be strict and serious all the time. It allows laughter and humor. On many occasions, it has been reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) laughed so much that his molars became visible, as in the following narration: “When the Messenger of Allah arrived after the expedition to Tabook or Khaybar [the narrator is not sure which], the wind raised an end of a curtain that was hung in front of Ayesha’s storeroom, revealing some dolls that belonged to her. He asked: What is this? She replied: My dolls. Among them, he saw a horse with wings made of rags, and he asked: What is this I see among them? She replied: A horse. He asked: What is this that it has on it? She replied: Two wings.

He asked: A horse with two wings?

She replied: Have you not heard that Solomon had horses with wings? She said: Thereupon, the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) laughed so heartily that I could see his molar teeth.”

(A reliable hadith recorded by Abu Dawood) However, there are limits. The Prophet (peace be upon him) has forbidden us from joking too much because it deadens the heart.

He said: “Do not laugh too much, for excessive laughter kills the heart [spiritually].” (Ibn Majah)

He also said: “If you knew that which I know, you would laugh little and weep much.”

(Bukhari) Thus, moderation is required even in humor. It is also vital to understand that there is a time for laughter and humor, and a time for seriousness and sobriety. The reason for this prohibition is that excessive laughter makes people take life less seriously, and they begin to see humor in everything.

It also makes them so accustomed to humor that they are unable to sit through any serious speech. Such people find lectures boring and do not attend anything beneficial simply because they do not find it funny. This is what is meant by excessive laughter killing the heart.

Consequently, the current norm of watching too many comedies and sitcoms is completely unacceptable. It is difficult to find a person who is accustomed to laughing all day who still takes Islam seriously. Muslims should realize that life is serious and that there are some things they cannot joke about; there is a time for laughter and a time for seriousness.

It should also be noted that jokes that mock or degrade any demographic group or individual are completely prohibited, as are fabricated stories that make people laugh, unless the audience knows that they are not true. Of course, the

best jokes are the ones based on true, daily-life anecdotes.

There is no harm in narrating such incidents to others to share a laugh.

Regarding mockery and degradation, Allah has informed us: “O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames.

Wretched is the name [that is, mention] of disobedience after [one’s] faith. And whoever does not repent — then it is those who are the wrongdoers.”

(Qur’an, 49: 11) As for lying when making jokes, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Woe to him who lies to make people laugh.

Woe to him! Woe to him!”

(Abu Dawood) Finally, the worst type of joke, which is forbidden, is one about Allah, His messenger or anything related to Islam. Such jokes take a person out of the fold of Islam and are regarded as kufr.

Consequently, certain practices that are rife among some Muslims, such as mocking the hijab (veil ordained by Allah for believing women), the beard or polygamy, among other things — amount to an extremely unacceptable sin and are considered equal to kufr. It is a sign

of hypocrisy; a person claims verbally to be a Muslim, but inwardly hates Islam or certain aspects of it. Moreover, medical science too prohibits excessive forms of laughter. Here is an extract from Wikipedia about the negative effects of excessive laughter: Laughter is not always a pleasant experience and is associated with several negative phenomena. Excessive laughter can lead to cataplexy, and unpleasant laughter spells, excessive elation, and fits of laughter can all be considered negative aspects of laughter. Unpleasant laughter spells, or “sham mirth,” usually occur in people who have a neurological condition, including patients with pseudobulbar palsy, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. These patients appear to be laughing out of amusement but report that they are feeling undesirable sensations “at the time of the punch line.”

Islam brings about the perfect balance of actions and anything in excess is surely harmful. Being humorous and laughing or smiling on halal (permissible) forms of jokes has been the sunnah of Prophet (peace be upon him). However, doing Ghulu in it was prohibited by him.

Evidently, evil resides where there is decline of ethics, moral values, lack of mercy, sympathy and empathy and we are forgetting how we are interconnected with each other, which is made clear by GOD: “you are one community”.

Miraj-un Nabi(saw)Conference celebrated at Fiji Islamic Centre On June 8, Islamic Association of Western Canada, International Muslim Academy of Canada (IMAC), Bullay Shah Academy of Canada and Dawat -e-Islami jointly organized an event at Fiji Islamic Center Surrey to remember the night of Miraj-un Nabi(saw). Mr. Haider Ali Khan, president of Islamic Association of Western Canada, was the MC for this event. He invited Hafiz M. Iqbal for recitation of Quran. Al Hajj Maulana Abdul Lateef Naumani was then invited to make Duaa for all Muslim Ummah. Br. Abdul Hafeez Qadri presented a Hamad, Br. Salman, Hamza Khan, Abdul Rasool Salis and Ismail Rajpoot recited beautiful Naats.

After Hamad o Naat session, MC requested Maulana Naumani, to deliver a speech on Isra wal- Miraj. He quoted many verses of Quran along with Hadiths and said that in order to understand what happened on that night with our beloved Prophet Mohammad (saw), we should read carefully the first verse of Surah Isra’a. He said the physical journey of Prophet Mohammad (saw) in 3 Ayyats of Quran and in 19 Ayyats indicate this Miraj incident. Maulana Naumani explained that the Holy Prophet (saw) made his first journey from Mecca to Masjid Aqsa in Jerusalem, while his second journey was from Masjid Aqasa to Sidra-t’al Mantaha (referenced in Surah Isra’a and Surah Najam).

Following the speech, Mr. Khan added that the journey of Miraj is not simply a claim of our Prophet, but it is written in Quran, especially the first verse of Surah 17 Al-Isra’a. Islamic Academy Of Canada’s raises funds for its Madrassa

Alhamdulillah, with the Blessing of Allah SWT , over 200 guests gathered at Fiji Islamic Centre Surrey on June 1st, at the occasion of Islamic Academy of Canada’s fundraising for its Madrassa (Darul Uloom Islamia) operation.

The program started with Tilawat e Quran. Maulana A. Lateef Naumani, Imam and Khateeb of Fiji Islamic Centre highlighted the excellent services of Islamic

Academy of Canada (IAC) and appealed to everyone to share in fundraising for the betterment of Madrassa operation.

Maulana Naumani introduced Guest of Honor – Maulana Bashir Ahmed Diwan residing in Auckland, New Zealand who provided over 45 years of services in Fiji as Pesh Imam. He is now serving in New Zealand for over twelve years.

Maulana B. Dewan said in his address “ It is a great honour for me that IAC invited me at its Almah courses graduation ceremony in Surrey Masjid and provided me optutunities to meet the Muslim community at different mosques. I was very pleased to see my Fiji followers who are volunteering serving in many Mosques of BC. Allah gave them rewards for their good deeds.

In his humble address he emphasised the purpose of this fundraising for the great services of Darul Uloom Islamia and motivated everyone for donation for those institutes which are providing teaching of Islam to our daughters and sisters in the light of Quran and Sunnah. Almost twelve thousands dollar has been raised for this Madrassa operation. Br. Harun Khan concluded the program with a vote of thanks.

On June 8, Iqra School management arranged a family fun day event at its play ground in which games, ATV ride, Giant Slides, Cake walk, dunking tank, lots of yummy food and Bar B Que and Clothing stalls were served throughout the day. It attracted hundreds of brothers and sisters, young and old alike.

The Muslim community looks forward to this event which includes a lot of attractions for kids. The smiles on the children’s

faces is what motivates the Iqra youth to continue on with this tradition and come back the next year with even more fun filled activities. This event is organized with the coordination by dedicated brothers and sisters of business community and charity organization including Taqwa Halal Meat and Muslim Food Bank. The Iqra school management thanked all the guests who visited at this Family Fun day with their kids.

The World Economy Is a Ticking Time Bomb (and The Fuse is Burning)

by Richard Eskow Respected economist John Kay is about to make a public statement which essentially says that the world economy is a ticking time bomb and global markets are a lit fuse.

Kay is a professor at the London School of Economics, a columnist for the Financial Times, and the author of a widely-read report on stock market flaws which was commissioned last year by the British government. Kay says that the world is “waiting for the next crisis.� He’ll present that conclusion in a keynote speech which was previewed and extensively quoted earlier this week.

Correction Time “Prices are driven to silly levels,� Kay says, “but everyone makes a load of money in the meantime, and then you get a correction.� What is known as a “correction� in financial parlance is better understood by most people as a recession or depression resulting in lost jobs, wealth, health, and security. The lords of finance have been disarmingly frank about this money-making strategy at times. “We actually benefit from downturns,� JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon told investors earlier this year. After the 2008 crisis Dimon told reporters he had explained downturns to his seven-year-old daughter by saying they’re “something that happens every five to seven years.�

In case you haven’t been counting,

the last crisis occurred five years ago.

Arbitraging the Future Tomorrow’s crisis is already making billions today for bankers and investors. But then, there’s almost no way for financiers to stop profiting from the next crisis under current conditions. The Federal Reserve and other central banks have flooded them with cheap money, making it inexpensive to borrow.

That was the right thing to do, but these low-cost loans should have come with strings, especially requirements that the money be used to provide consumers and small businesses with loans that could benefit the real-world economy in which most people live. Instead, as Prof. Kay points out, “(T)he system is geared around trading profits, which are, in large part, money that is borrowed from the future. A crisis results from the moment at which this money has to be paid back.�

On Borrowed Time “Margin debt� – money which is borrowed to invest in markets – has soared to precrisis levels, according to the New York Stock Exchange. Stocks are running as far ahead of inflation expectations as they did in the run-up to the last two crises. And yet there is very little sign of dramatic improvement in traditional economic indicators such as employment or consumer confidence.

That has given us the “Truman Show� economy, with an artificial

veneer of prosperity for the many – and great wealth for the few.

Prof. Kay says that he considers the Eurozone the likeliest spot for the next disaster. But wherever the spark is struck, disaster seems imminent. In the meantime, bankers are making enormous amounts of money with borrowed money ‌ and on borrowed time.

The Dance. Many financially sophisticated investors and bankers will say privately that they agree with Prof. Kay – that it’s only a matter of time until the next crisis comes. Why do they do it, then?

Chuck Prince, the ousted CEO of failed megabank Citigroup, probably put it best of all. “As long as the music is playing,� he said of the run-up to the last downturn, “you’ve got to get up and dance.�

That’s the paradox of the modern banker, who is both the lord of his or her domain and its servant.

They’re arbitraging the future for short-term gain, making money by laying the groundwork for a massive wave of oncoming misery. But they’re also caught in ta fiscal frenzy, as Prince’s graphic description illustrates, jerking back and forth in the grip of forces greater than themselves. The economy that enriches them is already dead, and their movements are its St. Vitus’ Dance.

Returning to the Real World If these involuntary fiscal movements are the problem, what solutions are available? The first step is tougher and smarter regulation. A

few good people are also trying to instill the banking profession with a better moral conscience. But ultimately we’ll need to fundamentally re-envision our concept of a national and world economy.

We’ve replaced the traditional image of economic well-being – which includes well-paying jobs, upward mobility, and consumer confidence – with the speculative, get-richquick world of heavy trading. But, as Prof. Kay notes, it’s no longer clear that stock markets provide real economic value. Financial intermediaries are capturing an increasing share of monies exchanged, rising from 5 percent in 1980 to 9 percent in 2010, an enormous take for the industry that failed so spectacularly only two years earlier. Financial-sector profits have once again soared to their bloated pre-crisis levels, consuming nearly a third of all corporate profits– and after-tax corporate profits haven’t been this high in modern history. “As long as the music’s playing ‌â€?

To paraphrase an old saying: It’s still

good to be Prince. (Although he lost his job, he went away wealthy.)

But tens of millions of people – perhaps hundreds of millions – are still suffering the after-effects of the last crisis. What happens when the next one comes along? It’s a frightening prospect, filled with the threat of even greater tragedies – and perhaps widespread social unrest.

We can learn the lessons of the past and stop stealing from the future, or we can face an uncertain fate so that a few people can keep on dancing. The Typical New House Construction Process Roofing and Renovation Solutions

and the footings (concrete slabs to support the foundation walls) are formed and poured.

Water, electricity, telephone and cable services may be brought in at this time.

The foundation walls are erected (may use poured concrete in temporary wooden forms or permanent insulated blocks, concrete blocks or preserved wood, for instance).

The foundation may be insulated and dampproofed. Weeping tiles are installed to drain ground moisture away from the house. A municipal inspection of the foundation may be conducted before the outside perimeter is backfilled.

At this time, the builder may ask you to begin making your selections—deciding on flooring, tiles, cabinets and so on. While it will be weeks before these items are installed, they must be ordered early to prevent delays later.

Phase Three: Framing Exterior walls, interior partitions and the roof are assembled. This usually means erecting a framing skeleton and applying exterior sheeting; or another framing technique may be used. Frames are built on the floor, one wall at a time and then lifted in place. Roof trusses are most often brought to the site ready for installation, and roofing is completed as quickly as possible to prevent accidental damage as work progresses on the lower parts of the home. Windows and doors are installed. The builder’s aim is to get to “lock-up” as quickly as possible to protect the structure from the elements.

The basement floor is installed. Electrical and plumbing services are roughed in, and ducting for heating, cooling and ventilation is put in place.

At this time, your municipality will probably require a structural inspection to ensure that the home is being built according to building code requirements. Electrical and plumbing inspections will likely be conducted as well.

Phase Four: Interior and exterior work For the next several weeks, a great deal of

Most home buyers have a lot of questions about the construction of their home: How long will it take to build? What happens when? What does each step involve? When can we visit the site and see our home in progress? When do we have to make final decisions about cabinets, fixtures, flooring, and so on? When do building inspections take place?

Will we have a chance to inspect it ourselves before we take possession?

Below is an outline of the typical construction process today. Bear in mind that this is a generalized description—your own new home builder may use a different approach.

The process and schedule will also be affected by the size and style of the house; the lot; the construction techniques used; the amount of customization required; the number of municipal inspections; whether the home is located in a large development; availability of labour, and many other factors. Ask your builder to explain the process for your home.

Phase One: Pre-construction Before any construction begins, plans for your home are developed, finalized and submitted to the municipal building permit office for review. Permits may be required for all or some of the following work: building, electrical, plumbing, septic system and sewer connection.

Prior to this, a number of site tests may be conducted to examine the water table, the soil and the bearing capacity of the ground and to conduct environmental tests. With this information, final engineering adjustments can be made to the plans.

Phase Two: Foundation Your house is staked out and the land is prepared. Often, the topsoil is removed and piled elsewhere for later use. Excavation is done,

work will happen inside and out, much of it at the same time, or overlapping. Proper scheduling is key to smooth progress.

The exterior walls and the roof are insulated, and a vapour barrier is applied. Another municipal inspection may take place to ensure this work has been done properly, before the drywall is installed. Heating and cooling systems are installed, including fireplaces.

Walls and ceilings are painted, flooring is laid, and kitchen and bathroom cabinets are installed. Plumbing and electrical fixtures are put in, trim is applied, and interior doors are hung.

Several additional municipal inspections may occur—for instance, after completion of the interior to check stairs, handrails and other health and safety related items, and/or after final grading outside. Plumbing and electrical work will probably require final inspection.

During this period, your builder will stay in regular contact with you, to update you on progress and to meet deadlines for selecting finishes and other decisions you may need to make.

Phase Five: From near-completion to hand-over At this point, your builder and crew are busy completing the final touches and cleaning up.

You may have made minor changes to the

A visit to the lighting supplier may trigger a desire for security lighting not included in the contract for your new home. You may decide to go for the fireplace after all or to enlarge the foyer after seeing working drawings. Or you may simply want more electrical outlets.

Professional new home builders will gladly attempt to accommodate any changes or additions you want to make before construction of your home begins, or even when it is in progress. But before you make any decisions, talk with your builder.

• Sometimes even small changes can have a significant impact on cost or scheduling, particularly if construction is already under way.

It may mean changing some aspect of the construction—for instance; a change in floor coverings may call for different sub-flooring.

• Changes can also result in delays. A professional new home builder works with a tight construction schedule and sub trades who move from one task to another and one home to another according to a timetable.

• It is crucial that all changes or additions are documented as written change orders and signed by both parties. This eliminates misunderstandings and ensures that everyone, from the people in the sales office to the site crew, knows what has been agreed to.

• Change orders are considered extras to the contract. Ask your builder to explain how you are expected to pay for them. Adjustments may be made to the outstanding balance due on closing date, you may be charged separately later, or the cost could be added to a scheduled construction draw.

The Pattullo Bridge Upgrades In The House Of Commons

On June 11 in the House of Commons Jasbir Sandhu, NDP MP for Surrey North, demanded that the Minister of Transportation and the Conservative government take steps to ensure that there are no tolls for the proposed upgrades to the Pattullo Bridge. “Residents in Surrey North agree that the upgrade is long overdue, however they are also rightly concerned about the proposed toll to pay for the upgrade”, said Sandhu. “With a toll already in place on the new Port Mann Bridge, residents of Surrey are being unfairly targeted and are running out of options to commute without being charged at every pass. The upgrade is more than what municipalities and Translink can afford. Stephen Harper and the Conservative government need to step up to the plate on infrastructure funding, and

the federal government needs to pay their fair share”.

This is not the first time that Sandhu has addressed the issue of lack of infrastructure funding for British Columbians. In April, in a question posed to the House of Commons about the Conservative Budget 2013, Sandhu mentioned that cuts to infrastructure will disproportionally affect the growing areas of British Columbia.

Sandhu will be paying close attention to the outcome of the joint Pattullo Bridge Review taking place over the month of June in Surrey and New Westminster, and will be pushing hard for an outcome where Surrey taxpayers do not have the added burden of paying for another toll bridge.

Economic challenges facing Nawaz Sharif

Nawaz Sharif faces many economic challenges as he becomes prime minister of Pakistan for an unprecedented third term, but most pressing of them all will be sorting out the country’s energy crisis, as the BBC’s Shahzeb Jillani reports from Karachi.

At exactly 8 o’clock in the evening, an entire neighbourhood in Karachi’s Malir district plunges into darkness. It’s a cue for restless children in cramped houses to come out and play in the narrow back streets. Women and the elderly usually hang out on their balconies or roof tops to beat the sweltering summer heat and humidity.

Within minutes, those who can afford back up power, kick-start their noisy generators. Others with more modest means rely on battery-run electricity using a device called UPS - or Uninterruptible Power Supply - enough to keep a few lights and ceiling fans on.

Many others who cannot afford either have to make do with lighting candles and using handheld fans to cope with the hot and sticky weather.

“It’s very frustrating. I can’t sleep at night. I am often tired and grumpy at school because of loadshedding,” says Hadia Sohail, a teenager trying to catch up on her homework by a candlelight.

By load-shedding, she means the

rolling power outages across the country that Pakistanis have come to detest so much.

The blackouts are a daily occurrence. And they have become longer and more frequent over the years. The country’s biggest province of Punjab has been the worst hit - where at times outages last up to 20 hours a day, putting factories out of business and people out of work.

The crippling energy crisis was seen as the decisive issue in the general election on 11 May. Most analysts agree that of all the perceived failures of President Zardari’s government, it was this issue which cost his PPP party the election in Punjab.

In contrast, Mr Sharif swept the vote in Pakistan’s most populated province, in part because of his campaign slogans promising to end the blackouts and boost economic growth.

But it would seem winning the election was the easy bit. Now begins the hard task of putting Pakistan’s faltering economy back on track.

Daunting challenges For starters, Mr Sharif is taking over the government at a time when the country’s finances are in a mess. Over the past five years, Pakistan’s balance of payments position has worsened.

Foreign exchange reserves have

been dwindling, leaving the country with about only three months of import cover. With bigger IMF repayments due this year, the country faces a looming crisis.

Growth and investment have remained low. An absence of new job opportunities has meant more and more young educated people are out of work.

The economy suffers from a condition some experts call stagflation, a period of prolonged economic slowdown coupled with sharp price rises. It doesn’t affect the rich and powerful as much, but hurts everyone else.

The challenges are daunting, and the time to tackle them will be short. Within days of taking office, the incoming government will present its first national budget for the financial year 2013-14.

Mr Sharif will have to get to grips with the country’s large fiscal imbalance. His government will have to come up with ways to boost tax revenues and cut government spending.

Mr Sharif will need to put forward a tax reform agenda to curtail rampant tax evasion in Pakistan. Traditionally, in this country of 180 million, only about 0.9% of people pay taxes. Despite previous government announcements to widen the tax net, last year the country registered 9% of tax-to-GDP ratio, one of the lowest in the world.

As an industrialist himself, the new prime minister inspires confidence among traders and industrialists. He is seen as someone who understands the challenges facing the economy. But he is also close to big business, critics say. So while Mr Sharif may very well try to get the country’s rich and powerful on board his reform agenda, he would probably not want to press them too hard for fear of losing their support.

Saudi bail-out?

To ease some of these pressures, Mr Sharif will urgently need to shore up inflows of foreign money. Most economists feel the incoming government will have no choice but to go back to the IMF. But that’s an option the new government does not appear keen on, at least for now. Sartaj Aziz, Pakistan’s former finance minister and a close aide to Mr Sharif, has said the country is exploring other ways of reviving the economy.

Mr Sharif and his advisers are pinning their hopes on help from the Saudi royal family, seen as close allies of Mr Sharif. Reports indicate his team is in talks with the kingdom for a deal to import oil on deferred payments The extent or terms of the proposed agreement are unclear. But if such an arrangement is reached, details are likely to emerge during Mr Sharif’s first visit to the kingdom after taking

office.

“If you solve the energy crisis, you will solve a lot of the problems Pakistan faces,” says Raza Jafri, head of research at the investment firm AKD Securities.

“I think given the strong mandate the new government is coming in with, they have a very good chance of following through on their promises.”

The way forward Analysts believe that in the short term, the government aim will be to be seen to be doing something to ease the power crisis. It will be a way of buying time to really figure out a way to bridge the gap between Pakistan’s energy supply and demand, estimated to be about 6,000 MW. In the medium to long term, however, the government will need to come up with a broad based structural reform agenda.

That could inevitably involve taking unpopular, but long overdue, steps like cutting subsidies and increasing power rates.

Pakistan will also have to finds ways to develop more hydro power and coal-generated electricity, instead of relying on more expensive imported furnace oil. In addition, the government will have to curtail electricity theft and waste by improving its inefficient transmission and distribution system.

Can Nawaz Sharif mend Pakistan’s ties with India?

As Nawaz Sharif prepares for an unprecedented third term as Pakistan’s prime minister, neighbouring India is watching closely. Sanjoy Majumder asks if the move could usher in a fresh chapter in relations between the two South Asian rivals.

Bustling and congested, Lajpat Nagar is a south Delhi neighbourhood set up for Hindu and Sikh refugees fleeing from Pakistan following the partition of the subcontinent in 1947.

Predominantly Punjabi, it is a reminder that there are many cultural and social similarities between the two countries - but also bitter differences.

This is where Inderdeep Chawla has his clothing shop - the Cotton Lawn.

It is like any other in this vibrant market but has one unique difference. It only sells Pakistani fabrics and designs.

“We are the only importer of Pakistani textiles in all of India,” Mr Chawla says.

“They’ve always been extremely popular in India - a real craze because their designs are very unique, their colours are very bold and on top of it the quality is extremely good.”

Fond memories But it has not been easy to do business. Visas are not always easy to get, regulations not streamlined and every time there is political tension business takes a hit.

“We’re neighbours so our relations need to be good. It helps the economy, and if the economy is good everything else is,” Mr Chawla adds.

Trade between the two countries is valued at $2.6bn (£1.7bn) and steadily increasing.

But India and China have set a trade target of $100bn by 2015.

Not surprisingly, it is the political relationship that dominates and defines how India and Pakistan view each other.

Since the Mumbai attacks of 2008, blamed

on Pakistan-based militant groups, relations have been frayed.

India has fond memories of Mr Sharif - he signed a landmark accord in 1999 with India which was soon undermined by a border war and then the military coup which ousted him from power.

But many analysts are urging caution.

“His ability to deliver on critical issues which are relevant for India is not totally under his control at this point of time,” says Commodore Uday Bhaskar, a retired naval officer who is now a security analyst.

Many believe that a lot will depend on Mr Sharif’s relationship and control over the military.

But there is also concern over his perceived ties to radical Islamic groups.

“Even before becoming prime minister, Mr Sharif has already mortgaged some of his political capital by entering into a deal with the right wing,” says Commodore Bhaskar.

“So if you say that he is now going to change Pakistan’s policy towards terror, how does he square this with those who enabled him to become prime minister?”

he adds.

‘Fingers crossed’ Despite this, most are willing to give him a chance.

His victory has been greeted by Indian

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who also sent a special envoy to meet Mr Sharif - even before he took office.

Even the principal opposition party, the Hindu nationalist BJP, is “cautiously optimistic”.

“There is a degree of higher expectations with Nawaz Sharif,” says party spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman.

“We see a leader who has probably grown with the times, who has matured with experience and is able to understand the various factors that come into play in Pakistan.

“We hope this will enable him to handle the India and Pakistan relationship,” says Ms Sitharaman.

So, all of India is watching and waiting to see how the Sharif administration unfolds.

And in his shop, Inderdeep Chawla is keeping his fingers crossed.

“Like me, he is a businessman and is a Punjabi. That should help,” he says with a chuckle.

Nearly 240,000 expatriates have so far corrected their work status by transferring their sponsorship to companies where they presently work or to new employers, since the announcement of an amnesty for illegals two months ago.

“A total of 239,883 expat workers have corrected their status so far,” the Ministry of Labor said in a statement, adding that 34,262 workers on average across the Kingdom had their status corrected every week.

The ministry added that 221,262 foreign workers had changed their profession during the amnesty period, with 30,180 workers on average receiving the service weekly.

“Thus, as many as 461,145 expats have so far made use of the minis-

try’s services,” the statement said.

The ministry’s Riyadh offices extended their services to 78,833 workers to change their sponsorship. The Makkah region came second with 45,576 transferring their sponsorships. The Baha office had the lowest number of 2,104 transfer cases. As a result of the huge crowd of expatriates who want to correct their status before the expiry of the amnesty on July 3, the ministry has canceled the annual leave of its workers at headquarters as well as branch offices this summer.

“The leave has been cancelled to help as many expatriates as possible to correct their status,” the ministry said, adding that employees would be allowed to enjoy their leave soon

Scholars join forces against Hezbollah

Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh has called on all the leaders and scholars of the Muslim world to take strong steps to stop the Hezbollah and its supporters fighting against the people in Syria.

“It has been known beyond doubt that it (Hezbollah) is a party of the enemy agent that does not respect the ties of kinship or covenant with the believers,” Al-Asheikh said while commenting on a recent statement by Sheikh Yusuf Qaradawi in which he acknowledged his error in taking an anti-Saudi stance on Hezbollah.

Al-Asheikh said in his statement yesterday that Saudi Arabia did not

have any ulterior motive in supporting any effort to solve problems of the Muslims in different parts of world. “(The Kingdom) is not seeking any narrow political gain (while helping the suffering Muslims) but it is motivated by the pure Islamic ideal of spreading justice and bringing an end to injustice and oppression.”

He thanked Qaradawi for commending the stance taken by the Saudi scholars in the past on various issues.

He also affirmed Qaradawi’s condemnation of Hezbollah’s collaboration with the Syrian regime in the hostilities against the Syrian people

after the end of the amnesty period.

“Those who wish to surrender their leave will be compensated,” the ministry said.

Employers whose foreign workers have been allowed to transfer their sponsorships without their permission would be compensated with recruitment visas if labor offices found their demand genuine.

In a related development, Brig. Mohammed Al-Anazi, director of expatriates department at the Passport Office in Riyadh, said that more than 150,000 illegals have already left the Kingdom.

It’s easy to take on a false sense of responsibility, thinking that it’s your job to keep everybody happy, to “fix” this person, to rescue that person or to solve another person’s problem.

Certainly, it is noble and admirable to want to help as many people as possible, and it is always good to reach out to others in need.

Too often, though, we get out of balance. At the end, we’re doing everything for everybody else, but we’re not taking any time to keep ourselves happy or healthy.

Often it is seen that when we try to keep everybody around us happy by trying to meet all their needs, we are the one’s who ends up suffering.

Remember that you should not sacrifice your happiness to keep someone else happy. It may sound a little selfish but there’s a tenuous balance here. Your first priority is to take care of yourself. To do so, you must recognize that some people are still not going to be happy no matter what you do for them. no matter how nice you are and no matter how much time and energy you give them.

They have their own issues to deal with or things inside that

they need to resolve. This does not mean that you are being selfish or self-centered.

We should be givers.

There’s a big difference between giving and allowing someone to control you and make you feel guilty until you do what he or she wants.

Once again you should not be unhappy simply to keep someone else happy.

Again, if you are allowing that, the other person is not the only one at fault. You may have taken on a false sense of responsibility and now are allowing another person to control you.

If you are in a relationship where you do the majority of the giving and always encour-age or rescue the other person, that is a clear indication that something is out of balance. You have to make some changes otherwise the relationship will continue to flounder.

You must take a stand. You can do it but you need to go to the right person and say,”I care about you, but I’m not going to allow you to keep dumping your problems on me and making my life miserable. I’m not going to let you keep draining all my time and energy.

You have to take responsibility.”

Keeping your cool

By Kari Heron Heat in the summer is not a surprise, but as the seasons change and the difference between winter and summer are most pronounced, we all struggle to change and acclimatise. Often times, the most obvious way we recognise the intense switch from being comfortably cool to being a bit hot in the neck is by the increase in thirst. As the heat outdoors rises, our bodies use more water to keep our organs cool. Since we are made up of 70 per cent water, keeping that water balance is even more critical when temperatures soar. Even if you are not really moved by the health bit, keeping yourself hydrated is essential for having supple and youthful skin and bouncy, shiny hair, so even the vain among us better take note of our list!

Hydrating Foods Cucumber, Watermelon, Celery ,Coconut water, Radish, Lettuce, Zucchini, Pomegranate, Raw broccoli, Peach, Yoghurt, Kefir, Plum, Mango, Cantaloupe, Strawberry, Avocado, Tomato, Cabbage, Capsicum, Pineapple, Cherry, Apple, Citrus fruits, Kiwi, Milk, Apricot, Banana. This way, you literally extract all the water out of the foods and consume them in a way that makes the nutrients immediately available to your body to replenish fluids in the heat.

However, most kids will tolerate the colour green on grass and trees, but hide under the dining table if they see it on their plate, much less in their cup. But every kid loves berries and this is a great way to get them to get in a very high amount of nutrients. You can combine different types of berries to see which ones they like. Try freezing them ahead of time or buying them frozen to make frozen slushy icy smoothies, which they will love.

Further, they love it when foods stain their tongues and lips, and berries are a safe and natural way for them to get that fun tint.

Chocolate or Strawberry Milk

Some children will drink plain milk, but almost all children will have flavoured milk. Milk is also a great source of potassium. Use fresh milk and good quality cocoa powder to make a more nutritious chocolate milk, and you can control the sugar yourself. Use brown cane sugar or even dates to sweeten. Blend it all together. For strawberry milk, use real strawberries and leave the syrups on the shelves. The berries are high in antioxidants, fibre and are full of flavour. Add sugar to taste. Frozen strawberries give it a milkshakelike consistency, which kids love.

You may also toss in an overripe banana in the chocolate milk or strawberry, for a richer, hydrating drink.

Homemade Fruit Juices Blend watermelon, juice fresh oranges and grapefruits, or blend together a fruit punch with a wide array or fruits. Giving children fresh juices, instead of drinks made from concentrates sold as juices, is far more nutritious. Add a little mint, a squeeze of lime, or a pinch of ginger to pack in a more healthy flavour and develop their palates.

If not sweet enough, you could add a little honey or brown cane sugar.

Ice Popsicles When you have leftover juice, pour them in an icicle mould, instead of letting it go off in the refrigerator.

Let’s look at China. More than 10 years ago, the Chinese people lived on a simple diet of mainly rice and vegetables: Everyone cooked meals at home made from locally grown ingredients, as there was little alternative. People could not afford to eat out. There were no supermarkets so everyone shopped at local neighborhood markets and food was brought in from the fields.

Some of the produce was so fresh it was still moving! China is now a newly wealthy country and life has changed. Where once people lived in little houses in narrow streets, skyscrapers have now been built.

Redevelopment and progress has swept away market squares. International supermarket chains arrived to sell food from all over the world with readymade meals and readymade Chinese sauces. Meat was once seen as an expensive treat, now it is readily affordable. Fast food chains have moved in to take advantage of the increased wealth. Fast food is usually meat food. As fast food chains spread across Asia, so does the factory farming of animals.

It is only natural that at first people are delighted to have cheap fast food and ready-made suppers. It can seem a really good solution for people who are working hard. However, the tide is turning; people are now starting to wake up and realize it is very im-

portant to know what is in the food we are eating. People are now aware that too much fat, salt and sugar is not healthy. Moving to Western-style high-fat factory-made food has pushed up the prices of fruit and vegetables whilst factory-produced food has become very cheap.

Times change, but not always for the better. Not so long ago a man would work very hard just so he could feed his family. In most Western countries this is no longer the case. We must work hard to provide good quality food and to take the time to teach young people the art of preparing a simple healthy meal.

Food in wealthy countries has been dominated by Western-style cuisine in the past decade. While we may have been temporarily engaged by fast food and ready-made meals, other countries are now starting the big fight back. They are looking to restore their own traditional healthy dishes made from locally sourced fresh ingredients. This is starting to happen in Gulf countries also. On a recent visit to Dubai I was taken to a gourmet restaurant where they serve the most delicious organic local dishes. The food tasted amazing because it was fresh. It is becoming a very popular meeting place for all those who love traditional Arabic food. Fresh local food is a treat not to be missed.

Unnique Islamic Activities this summer By: Dawud Wharnsby Ali It should be noted that a majority of the activities listed in “Summer Ideas” section teach various aspects of Islamic knowledge and wisdom including awareness of Allah, the importance of giving one’s time and wealth in charity, respect for elders, importance of family time and how to take responsibility for one’s actions. The following are some tips on how to implement a stronger application of more specific Islamic knowledge within the home. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us that Allah loves consistency. Keep Islamic activities simple yet consistent – make them a part of daily life. Most importantly, parents should adhere to the following list themselves. If we, as adults, make exceptions for ourselves, how can we expect our children to learn from these activities?

Peace Be Upon You • During summer months, children will likely be around the house more often. Get into the habit of saying “Assalamu Alaikum” to them whenever you enter a room and urge them politely to do the same. (Sahaba would make this greeting even if a tree separated them while walking! It is a small effort but really helps to set the tone of a room and a relationship).

Come Fast To Success • Designate a child to make the Adhan before prayer for the summer months or rotate a schedule for many siblings to take on the responsibility.

Around The World In A Summer • Have kids do different creative projects on Islam. Example: Prepare a study each week on a country with a predominantly Muslim population. Have children learn about the culture and people by visiting the library or speaking

Many Canadians observe Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June. It is a day for people to show their appreciation for fathers and father figures. Father figures may include stepfathers, fat hers-in-law, guardians (eg. foster parents), and family friends.

What do people do?

Many people in Canada celebrate Father’s Day in a variety of ways to express their love and gratitude to fathers or father figures. Father’s Day activities include (but are not limited to): Participating in Father’s Day fun runs and other events in which the proceeds go towards charity or prostate cancer rese arch.

• Buying presents such as neckties and other items of clothing, chocolates, books or equipment for various types of hobbies.

• Giving handmade or purchased cards.

• Breakfasts, brunches, lunches, or dinners either at home or in restaurants.

• Taking fathers or father figures out to the movies, the park, the zoo, or another place of interest.

Some people organize joint Father’s Day parties and activities with close friends and family. Those who live away from their fathers or father figures may make long-distance phone calls, send an email or online card, or arrange for gifts to be delivered on Father’s Day. Some museums and other venues open to the general public may host special Father’s Day celebrations where fathers and father figures can enter free of charge.

Public life: Father’s Day is not a federal public holiday in Canada. It falls on a Sunday, which is a day off for many workers so many offices and stores are closed. However, some shopping precincts and stores, as well as restaurants, cafes and entertainment venues, may be particularly busy on Father’s Day. Background: The idea of a special day to honor fathers and celebrate fatherhood was introduced from the United States. A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by the American Mother’s Day celebrations and planned a day to honor fathers early in the 20th century. The first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. Father’s Day has become increasingly popular throughout North America and other parts of the world over the years.

Build A Masjid • Set up a room in the house as a Summer Masjid, used only for worship and UTILIZE IT! Move all the furniture out or push it all aside. Kids can have fun decorating the Masjid by drawing posters with the word ‘Allah’ or practicing their Arabic writing skills to copy short verses from the Quran onto poster paper. Get hold of a large box (appliance boxes work great!) that can be cut, painted and set upright to form a niche in the direction of the Qibla. Keep a timetable on the wall and let the

kids be responsible for setting up prayer mats and calling the family to pray at the appropriate times.

When they call, respect their effort and pray with them!

Tahajud / Fajr In The Yard • Hold a special Tahajud night for older kids (9 –13). Get a hold of a small tent and camp out in the yard with the intention to wake up – or stay up late to pray a few Rakas of Tahajud (late night prayer) outside under the stars. If you live in a city core, make it a special family night where everyone agrees to wake up late for ice cream and night prayers – do the prayers first and follow it up with a midnight snack of Neapolitan and whip cream. This will unite the family and make night prayers seem much more approachable.

Wherever you live, see if you can include Fajr and watch the sunrise as a family.

Having lost their tournament opener to the West Indies, Pakistan went down to South Africa by 67 runs in Birmingham last night.

They now face arch-rivals India in the must-win game on Saturday. “I don’t know what is wrong but the

batsmen are not justifying their places in the team and it is hard on the bowlers who have done a good job so far,” Misbah said. “I was not expecting this sort of performance because the batsmen had done well in the warm-up games in the run up to the tournament but they have just not clicked. Not being able to score even 200 in both matches is terribly disappointing,” he added. Misbah said there were no demons in the Edgbaston pitch and the batsmen needed to apply themselves patient-

Blackhawks draw first blood with win over Bruins in triple overtime

It was, first-and-foremost, a purely fascinating study in the art of playoff hockey, all momentum swings and desperation plays, almost two games for the price of one. These were two teams – the Chicago Blackhawks and the Boston Bruins - presumably aware that whoever drew first blood in the Stanley Cup final would have a significant leg-up in the ultimate outcome. All the things that sometimes make the NHL must-see TV were on display during Wednesday night’s opener, won 4-3 in triple overtime by the Blackhawks over the Bruins, the first Original Six matchup in the Stanley Cup final since 1979 and one that genuinely lived up to its advance billing. There was the creativity of the Bruins’ David Krejci, setting up the first

two goals of the game and adding to his ever-expanding lead atop the NHL’s scorer’s list. There was Milan Lucic’s finishing touch – missing in a regular season in which he scored just seven goals, present in a postseason where he has five already, and a real hot stick. Boston’s overall defensive play had limited the talented Pittsburgh Penguins to just two goals in four games in the previous round. The Chicago Blackhawks had surpassed the Penguins’ grim offensive output by the 12:14 mark of the third period already, thanks to another in a series of stirring comebacks by the NHL’s regular-season champions. Chicago overcame a two-goal thirdperiod deficit on goals by Dave Bolland and Johnny Oduya a little over four minutes apart midway
