CALGARY FLOODS TO COST ECONOMY BILLIONS
Economists say flooding in Alberta will cost Calgary’s economy billions of dollars and affect the Canadian economy as a whole. Although the precise economic damage caused by the flooding is hard to measure, economists say it will be widespread and long-lasting. One estimate from BMO Capital Markets is that Canada’s GDP will be reduced by $2 billion as a direct result of the floods. Tom MacKinnon, an analyst with BMO Capital Markets, estimates that direct losses from the flooding will be between $3 billion and $5 billion. That is at least 10 times higher than the losses incurred during the floods of 2005. In Calgary, the floods will cut into retail sales, tourism and industries that service the energy industry. Todd Hirsch, chief economist at Alberta Treasury Branch, says the large oil and gas companies headquartered in Calgary are coping. “Production itself is not being disrupted. No oil and gas comes through downtown Calgary. It would be far more disruptive for these companies financially if it was a refinery or maybe one of their mining operations went down in the flood,” said Hirsch. However, three pipelines in the province

Former dictator Musharraf to be tried for treason: PM Nawaz Sharif ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif told the National Assembly Monday that the government would put former military ruler Pervez Musharraf on trial for treason, charges punishable by death or life imprisonment. He told the lower house of Parliament that the newly elected government of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) will file a written request before the Supreme Court to try former military ruler General (retd) Pervez Musharraf for treason under Article 6 of the Constitution. Sharif said the former president had committed treason by abrogating the Constitution and he should be tried under the law. The premier moreover said Musharraf would be tried for imposing a state of emergency in the country in 2007 while also suspending the Constitution. Earlier, Attorney General of Pakistan Munir A. Malik informed the Supreme Court that the government was fully committed to initiate high treason case against the former military ruler and his abettors according to the provisions of the Constitution. The AG submitted a written statement before the three-member SC bench comprising Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja, Justice Khilji Arif Hussain and Justice Ijaz Afzal Khan during the hearing of petitions against Pervez Musharraf for imposing emergency in the country on November 3, 2007. “Given the primacy of the issue in the struggle for upholding the spirit of Constitution, the federal government will proceed in accordance with law and also take political forces into confidence through a consultative process so that the collective will and wisdom of the people of Pakistan is duly reflected in further process in this behalf,” said the statement. The attorney general stated that the government would need time to frame the whole process. However, the apex court ad-

the disruption, only commerce secretaries of the two countries have met so far. Beside recommencement of talks, Pakistan is eyeing reactivation of the back channel often called Track-II.Though the officials did not say in so many words, it seemed that the PML-N government’s strategy was to deal with softer issues in the official dialogue, while leaving tougher ones to TrackII. “There would be much more focus on issues that can be resolved,” one of the aides said while speaking about the talks conducted at the secretaries’ level. No progress was made on the core issues of Kashmir, Sir Creek and Siachen in the two rounds that have been completed so far. Instead, India and Pakistan drifted further away on Siachen and Sir Creek that were once considered as “doables” among the list of contentious issues they had been talking about. The only area where the two sides made some progress was trade. The previous government had promised India the Most Favoured Nation status in trade sector by the end of the last year, but the promise could not materialise due to strong criticism of the move in Pakistan. The other senior aide said that till now the focus had been on confidence building measures and not dispute settlement. “Therefore, back channel will be reactivated.” Prime Ministers Manmohan Singh and Nawaz Sharif have developed a good rapport since May 11 elections in Pakistan. Plans are being considered for their meeting, which may take place in either of the countries or on the sidelines of a multilateral event.
Nanga Parbat terrorists identified: Chief Secretary
Chief Secretary Gilgit Baltistan has claimed that 15-16 of the terrorists behind the killing of ten foreign tourists at the Nanga Parbat base camp have been identified. According to the Chief Secretary, the terrorists belong to banned organizations with ten from Diamer, three from Kohistan and two from Manshera. The Chief Secretary added that terrorists were present in batches along the mountainous regions. Attackers dressed in police uniforms stormed a base camp at the foot of Nanga Parbat late Saturday, shooting dead ten foreign

journed further hearing of the case till June 27 while directing the AG to further explain the government’s stance on the issue. Leader of Opposition in NA Syed Khurshid Shah welcomed the prime minister’s speech in NA and said that the pictures of all past dictators should be removed from the parliament premises. He said that people rejected those who called the Constitution of Pakistan a meagre piece of paper, a reference to another former dictator General Ziaul Haq. Other members of the NA sitting on opposition benches also extended their full support to government in its decision to try the former dictator. Following Shah’s address, Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi said his party would support every constitutional step taken by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The premier later took the federal cabinet into confidence over government’s response in high treason case against Pervez Musharraf. Source: DAWN.COM
Hopes for revival of dialogue with India
Pakistan is hopeful of resumption of stalled peace dialogue with India in a few weeks in which trade is likely to take precedence over core bilateral disputes, reported by Dawn. Soon after its installation, the PML-N government had signalled to India its desire for restarting the talks held up since January due to flare-up of tensions along the Line of Control. The Indian government has promised to send its proposals for resumption of talks, which are being awaited. “The schedule of meetings of various segments of the dialogue is being prepared,” one of the government’s top foreign policy aides said at a background briefing. At the time of the last interruption, the two sides were engaged in the third round of the dialogue revived in Thimphu in 2011. Had the dialogue taken its normal course, the third round would have been nearing completion by now but, because of

The victims have been identified as an American with dual Chinese citizenship, three Ukrainians, two Slovakians, two others from China, a Lithuanian and a climber from Nepal. Pakistan’s umbrella Taliban movement claimed responsibility, saying it had set up a new faction, Junood ul-Hifsa, to kill foreigners to avenge US drone strikes on Taliban and AlQaeda operatives.

4 I N T E R N A T I O N A L Israel approves settlements Lebanese army storms cleric’s headquarters in East Jerusalem Shabaan 19, 1434 H June 28, 2013
An Israeli planning committee has advanced a plan to build 69 housing units in the East Jerusalem settlement of Har Homa, according to Israel Radio, despite US efforts to revive peace talks. The Jerusalem municipality said on Wednesday that the construction project, which was built more than a decade ago and now houses 12,000 Israelis, was not new and had already passed earlier planning stages. Palestinian officials condemned the latest authorisation as a “message” to US Secretary of State John Kerry, who is trying to revive longstalled Middle East peace negotiations. Har Homa is a particularly contentious area on Jerusalem’s southern outskirts where construction is likely to have a serious impact on the sector’s boundary with the West Bank, experts say. Brachie Sprung, a spokeswoman for the Israeli municipality in Jerusalem, said the city planning commission had also issued building permits for 22 homes in two Palestinian-populated districts along with the 69 housing units in Har Homa. Palestinians say Israel must stop building settlements before peace talks resume. “Resumption of negotiation requires a cessation of all settlement activities,” the Palestine Liberation Organisation said in a statement this week. Israel’s housing minister said this month that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had quietly halted housing starts in settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem since March,
but has continued with projects already under way. On his fifth visit to the region since he took office in February, Kerry is due to start another round of shuttle diplomacy on Thursday between Jerusalem and the central West Bank city of Ramallah. “I’m not setting any deadlines. We purposefully wanted to avoid deadlines. Deadlines can become self-imposed hurdles and, in fact, impediments to actually making progress,” Kerry said. He said there was a certain urgency for leaders “to make some hard decisions.” “Now why is it urgent? It is urgent because time is the enemy of a peace process,” Kerry said. In Washington, Patrick Ventrell, the acting deputy spokesperson for US State Department, declined to answer a question about the new settlements, but said Kerry planned to “sit down and meet with both sides.” “The secretary is very focused on getting both sides back to the table,” Ventrell said. Settlement construction has been a main stumbling block in Israeli-Palestinian negotiations aimed at establishing a Palestinian state on land Israel occupied in the 1967 war. Israel annexed East Jerusalem soon after the war in a move never recognised internationally. Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be capital of the state they seek in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. They say Israel must stop building settlements before peace talks resume. Clark promises action to combat looming job shortage Premier Christy Clark promised a renewed focus on the economy as the legislature reconvened Wednesday, pledging to this fall release a comprehensive 10-year plan for skills training as well as an update to her almost two-year-old jobs plan. Clark’s promises throughout the speech were largely
pulled from the recent election campaign — where she won a surprise victory by focusing almost exclusively on jobs and the economy — though data released Wednesday confirms the province needs immediate action to address an expected shortage of skilled workers. Statistics Canada’s 2011 National Household Survey showed that both Canada and B.C. are facing a looming shortage of skilled workers in the trades — including mechanics, welders and construction staff — as the number of qualified older workers approaching retirement outnumbers younger ones. The data says the shortfall is expected in part because a lower proportion of young adults aged 25-34 hold a trades certificate compared with older adults aged 55-64. According to the data, in 2011, 65 per cent of people in B.C. with a trades certificate or diploma were older than 45, while just 35 per cent were under 45. The numbers are very different when it comes to university degree holders: 44.8 per cent of degree holders were older than 45, while 55.2 were between 20 and 44 years old. Among the three post-secondary credentials (trades certificates, college diploma and university degree), the trades certificate is the only one held by a lower proportion of younger adults compared to older adults. Approximately 2.2 million Canadians aged 25-64 — about 12.1 per cent of the total population in that age bracket — hold some form of trades certificate (including a certificate or diploma, or registered apprenticeship certificate) as their highest level of education, according to the 2011 survey. Asked about these numbers on Wednesday, Clark said she has already called on her cabinet to streamline the province’s edu-
cation system to ensure there is a “seamless path for people from kindergarten to work, no matter where they want to work.” In Wednesday’s throne speech, Clark’s government promised a comprehensive approach to skills training, which her office said should be released by the fall. Clark’s office said she will also release an updated version of the Jobs Plan this September, the two-year anniversary of when Clark first launched the document. Clark does not have a seat in the Legislature, and so watched the throne speech from a row of seats along the wall of the chamber for invited guests, former MLAs and dignitaries. Before the speech, she donned a hard hat to speak with reporters at a Victoria-area construction site where workers are building an assisted-living home for seniors. “These are the kinds of investments we can make because we have a growing economy, despite the fact that the world economy remains fragile,” said Clark, standing in front of a semicircle of 17 construction workers. “All of this is about trying to do the right thing, doing right by British Columbians, like the folks behind me today.” New Democratic Party leader Adrian Dix criticized Clark Wednesday, saying her government has been idle on the issue of skills training for far too long. A British Columbia Institute of Technology outcomes survey for 2012 shows that 100 per cent of those who trained as heavy duty mechanics are employed at an average hourly wage of $37, 90 per cent of BCIT carpentry grads are employed with an average wage of $28 per hour, and 88 per cent of level C welders are employed at an average wage of $17 per hour. BCIT’s vice-president of education Paul Dangerfield said the school’s trades programs are full, demonstrating the challenge already facing the province’s young people. The only trades programs with spaces are those in apprenticeship programs that require sponsorship from an existing employer. The programs with the longest waiting lists include plumbing, electrician and welding, Dangerfield said, adding that high-skilled careers such as engineering technicians or robotics technologists are also in high demand. He said there are a lot of job opportunities in both the trades and the high-skilled fields, but that often graduates will have to move up north or to the Kootenays to find employment. The shortage affects many government ministries including K-12 education, jobs, advanced education and the new natural gas development ministry, Dangerfield said. Source: Vancouver Sun
Lebanon’s army has seized control of the headquarters of an Islamic cleric and arrested dozens of his supporters, following a second day of clashes fuelled by Syria’s civil war. The army said 12 soldiers had been killed in the fighting in Abra, near Sidon, while security sources gave a higher army death toll of 18 and said 20 of Sheikh Ahmed al-Assir’s supporters were killed. The clashes subsided on Monday evening but Assir, who has accused the army of backing the interests of the Shia group Hezbollah, remains at large. Local media reported that he and some supporters had gone into hiding in Ain el Helweh, one of the Palestinian refugee camps nearby, following the battle. The army is trying to kill or capture him, after accusing him of killing soldiers “in cold blood” on Sunday. Reports from Abra described at least four tanks and several army vehicles ablaze, while abandoned weapons and military clothing were found inside the cleric’s headquarters. Many buildings in the complex had been damaged by fire, with Assir’s main office said to have been totally destroyed. Tensions had been rising in Sidon since the Lebanese Shia group Hezbollah sent fighters into Syria to help recapture a strategic border town controlled by Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s forces. The army said clashes broke out on Sunday after security forces detained one of Assir’s followers. His supporters retaliated by opening fire on an army checkpoint. Army commanders pledged to crush Assir’s forces. “We affirm to all Lebanese that the army is determined to eradicate strife, and will not halt its military operations until security is completely restored to the city,” the army said in a statement on Monday. At least 62 Assir supporters were arrested as soldiers combed the area they had seized, a security source said. One of the men captured had disguised himself as a woman. Lebanon’s commissioner to the military court, Judge Sakr Sakr, said that Assir had been summoned “to be put on trial, along with 123 of his followers, including his brother and Fadl Shaker,” a prominent Lebanese singer who abandoned his career to join Assir’s ultraconservative group. “Come and save your people who are being massacred,” said an appeal on Assir’s Twitter account on Monday. Assir, whose supporters accuse the army of giving cover to Hezbollah gunmen, called for people across the country to join him and demanded that “honourable” soldiers defect. Assir has a small group of staunch supporters, believed to be in the hundreds. But many Lebanese Sunnis see him as a militant and troublemaker. Lebanon’s grand mufti, Mohammad Rashid Qabbani, condemned the fighting, saying that there was never a justified reason to attack the armed forces. But in the northern coastal city of Tripoli, a Sunni stronghold, masked gunmen roamed the streets on motorbikes and fired guns and sound grenades in a show of support for Assir. Other supporters blocked main roads with cement blocks and burning tires. Source: Al-Jazeera
CALGARY : Continued from pg 1 have been damaged and rail shipments were disrupted for several days. Hirsch says that he expects economic activity in Calgary to slow in the short term, but that will be somewhat offset by a boost in spending to rebuild the city’s infrastructure. On Monday, Alberta Premier Alison Redford said it would take 10 years to rebuild the flood-damaged areas of the city and the province. She pledged an immediate $1 billion in aid toward emergency relief and reconstruction. Smaller firms that lack the resources of the big players are expected to have a tougher time. Chris Tulloch, a Calgary business consultant, says small and medium-size businesses will need help to survive. “Ninety per cent of companies that have a major disaster that don’t have a contingency plan in place fail within three years,” says Tulloch. In downtown Calgary, where the power has been out since Friday, small business owners are losing thousands of dollars, and their employees are losing their jobs. Chinatown is one of the most flood-affected areas of the city. Local business owner Sang Yun told CBC he lost $20,000 worth of food and has had to lay off five employees. The federal government is promising help. Calgary Southeast MP Jason Kenney, also the federal minister of citizenship and immigration, says the government will speed up the process of getting unemployment insurance benefits to people who lose their jobs because of the flooding. Iran Rial Gains 15% Since Rohani Win
The Iranian rial has gained 15 percent since the victory of president-elect Hassan Rohani, who has said he will seek an easing of international sanctions in an effort to revive the economy. The currency strengthened to 31,500 rial a dollar in unregulated trading shortly before markets closed yesterday, from 36,250 on June 13, the day before Rohani’s surprise first-round election victory, according to Daily Rates For Gold Coins and Foreign Currencies, a Facebook page used by businessmen based in Iran and abroad. Today is a public holiday in Iran and markets are closed. Unlike President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who advocated a confrontational approach to Western nations, Rohani has said he will bring more transparency to Iran’s nuclear program
in an effort to roll back some of the U.S. and European Union measures against the country, which cut oil exports and pushed inflation to 30 percent. The rial had lost more than half of its value against the dollar in the past year amid financial and energy sanctions. With accelerating inflation eroding the value of savings in rial, Iranians had turned to dollars as a form of investment. Now they have started to reintroduce to the market the dollars stacked at home, amounting to some $20 billion according to Central Bank governor Mahmoud Bahmani, Tehran-based Shargh newspaper reported yesterday. European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said today she hopes Iran’s new government will work with world powers on settling the dispute over its
EU delays Turkey talks amid arrests Turkey’s bid for membership of the European Union has hit another stumbling block, with member states postponing a new round of talks for at least four months. The EU further criticised Turkey’s crackdown on antigovernment protests and delayed the talks on Tuesday, a day before they were originally due to start. Germany, backed by Austria and the Netherlands, blocked the planned talks, saying it would send the wrong signal so soon after police cracked down on protesters in Turkish cities. EU governments did accept the talks in theory, agreeing to open negotiations on socalled Chapter 22, one of 35 sets of rules and regulations that candidate states must satisfy before gaining entry to the club, at some point this year. The talks are likely to open properly in October, after the German elections which have been playing a strong role in Chancellor Angela Merkel’s foreign policy of late. It was the first movement on the virtually frozen Turkish bid for three years. Turkey and Germany became embroiled in a diplomatic row last week after Merkel said she was appalled by the heavy-handedness of Turkish police. Germany and France have always had concerns about allowing a largely Muslim country of 76 million people into the 27-nation EU, fearing that Turkey’s cultural differences and its size will make it too difficult to integrate. Tuesday’s decision had been previous-
ly discussed with Turkey, and the government responded mildly to the news when compared to previous vitriolic responses to Germany’s objections to Turkey’s bid. Turkey had promised a strong reaction to any EU decision and Turkish press reports had said it could suspend negotiations with Brussels altogether, but it toned down its criticism. The foreign ministry in Ankara welcomed the decision as a “step taken in the right direction” but still deemed it “inadequate”. “What is important is the confirmation of the opening of the chapter with an irrevocable decision,” Ahmet Davutoglu, Turkish foreign minister, said on Tuesday. “An obstacle in Turkey’s relations with the EU has been overcome ... Our target now is the opening of two new chapters.” Turkey opened negotiations to join the EU in 2005, 18 years after applying. The diplomatic setback came as police raided homes in Ankara, detaining at least 20 people accused of participating in anti-government protests. The state-run Anadolu agency said on Tuesday that police searched about 30 addresses, including hospitals and parks where the protesters stay during the night. Those detained were alleged to have links to “terror” groups and were suspected of “attacking police and the environment” during recent protests that swept the country. Source: Al-Jazeera
Engaging in peace talks with the Taliban will be an “uneasy endeavour”, US Secretary of State John Kerry said, as he thanked Qatar for hosting the group’s political office. Speaking on Saturday at the Friends of Syria meeting in Doha, Kerry said: “We need to see if we can get back on track ... I don’t know whether that’s possible or not,” after these delays this week which saw the Afghan government angry at the fanfare surrounding the opening of the office. “The road ahead is difficult,” Kerry said. “If there is not a decision ... to move forward by the Taliban in short order, then we may have to consider whether or not the office has to be closed.” The opening of the Taliban office was a practical step paving the way for peace talks to end Afghanistan’s 12-year-old war. But the official-looking pro-
tocol surrounding the event raised angry protests in Kabul that the office would develop into a Taliban government-in-exile. A diplomatic scramble ensued to allay the concerns. Al Jazeera’s diplomatic editor James Bays said Kerry’s comments were likely aimed at easing the concerns of President Hamid Karzai’s government. “They [US officials] know there is only a small window of opportunity, if they don’t do something soon, the Taliban might withdraw their offer to take part.” Initially optimistic about Afghan representatives being dispatched to Doha, Karzai’s attitude had abruptly changed by Wednesday. “As long as the peace process is not Afghan-led, the High Peace Council will not participate in the talks in Qatar,” Karzai said. Meanwhile, James Dobbins, the US special representa-

nuclear program. “I really hope that we might see some progress,” Ashton, who represents United Nations Security Council powers plus Germany in nuclear talks with Iran, told reporters before an EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Luxembourg. “We’ve put some good confidence-building measures on the table.” Iran and world powers failed to reach an accord during the last round of nuclear negotiations, which was held in Kazakhstan in April. Western diplomats complained that Iran failed to respond to a confidence-building proposal made six weeks ago that would ease some economic sanctions in exchange for Iran curbing its nuclear program. Iran’s interlocutors are calling for a halt in enrichment of uranium to 20 percent purity. The Islamic republic
says it needs the medium-enriched uranium for isotopes to treat cancer patients, while the U.S. and its allies say it may further enrich the uranium to create material to build nuclear weapons. Source: Bloomberg
Russia’s Putin bluntly rejects U.S. pleas to deport NSA leaker Vladimir Putin firmly rebuffed US appeals to hand over Edward Snowden Tuesday as he finally confirmed that the fugitive whistleblower was holed-up in the transit area of a Moscow airport. The Russian president said that the 30-year-old American was a “free man” and as a “transit passenger” he could fly on to wherever he liked. However, he urged Snowden to select his “final destination” sooner rather than later and said that the Russian authorities had been surprised by his arrival in the country. Snowden, a former technician at the U.S. National Security Agency, arrived at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport from Hong Kong on Sunday and is believed to be waiting to fly on to a safe haven. It has been suggested that he might travel to Venezuela or Cuba, but the U.S. government is anxious to secure his extradition on charges of espionage. Addressing the issue for the first time, Putin said Russia had no power to restrict Snowden’s movements. “He came as a transit passenger and he does not need a visa or other document,” he said. “As a transit passenger, he has the right to buy a ticket and fly where he wants.” The website of Sheremetyevo airport states that passengers are only allowed to stay in transit for 24 hours. Putin insisted that Russian security officials had not made contact with the whistleblower. “I hope this won’t reflect on the business aspect of relations with the United States. I hope that our partners will understand,” he added. John Kerry, the U.S. secretary of state, called for Russia to be “calm” and hand over America’s most wanted man, saying Washington was not looking for “confrontation”. Despite the lack tive for Afghanistan and Pakistan, is expected to participate in talks in Doha, but there was some confusion as to who else would take part. A Taliban spokesman, who asked not to be named, told Al Jazeera that the group had not been told about Dobbins’ arrival, and “in light of recent events, we have not yet agreed to have a meeting with the Americans.” He also said that the Taliban is “hopeful” for a solution in due time, but the important issue was “to bring peace to Afghanistan, and remove foreigners occupying our land.” An Afghan diplomat in Doha, speaking to Al Jazeera also on the condition of anonymity, reiterated Karzai’s
of an extradition treaty between the U.S. and Russia, a National Security Council spokesman stated that there was “a clear legal basis to expel Mr Snowden”. Putin said that Russia only extradited foreign nationals to countries with which it had a formal extradition treaty. “We have no such agreement with the United States,” Putin said, adding that Snowden had broken no Russian laws. “Snowden is a free man, the faster he chooses his final destination, the better for him and for us.” Snowden became the centre of an international tug of war when he fled China in an attempt to evade U.S. charges of treason imposed after he leaked details of mass surveillance schemes by American and British intelligence services. Having had his US passport revoked, his most likely ultimate destination remains Ecuador, where he has applied for asylum. He has been aided in the process by WikiLeaks, the organization whose founder Julian Assange has taken refuge in Ecuador’s London embassy for the past year to avoid extradition to Sweden on charges of rape and molestation. There has been speculation that Snowden could settle in another Leftist anti-American state, such as Venezuela or Cuba, or possibly Iceland, where WikiLeaks has some high-profile supporters. Despite a heavy media presence, Snowden has not been seen since he landed on a commercial flight and was taken by limousine to a hotel in the transit zone. A source at the airport said he arrived with an onward ticket for Monday’s Aeroflot flight to Cuba which he did not use. Havana is believed to be his preferred next transit point. Source: The Province view that peace talks should be “Afghan-led.” US State Department officials have said before that they did not have a timeline for when Dobbins will start potential talks with the Taliban, and have insisted that Kerry himself will not engage in discussions with the rebel group. President Barack Obama’s administration has supported dialogue with the Taliban as the US prepares to pull out its 68,000 combat troops from Afghanistan next year, ending the longest-ever US war which has become increasingly unpopular at home. Happy 146th Birthday ‘O Canada’
As usual, July 1 is fast approaching, so is the Canadians’ excitement. Since “Canada Day” is a federal statutory holiday, it’s celebrated throughout Canada with full fervour - all in recognition of the ‘July 1, 1867 enactment’ of the British North Americas Act (BNA), which is also called “The Constitution Act, 1867.” Historically speaking, the Canadian founders of confederation were the representatives of the British North America colonies who attended the three major conferences on Canadian confederation. Sir John A. Macdonald became the first Prime Minister of Canada on that day; not only was he the ‘father of confederation,’ but he also drafted two-thirds of the provisions of the BNA creating the ‘Dominion of Canada.’ As a result, Canada became a selfgoverning dominion of Great Britain. The four provinces were created from the former British colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario. Presently, Canada consists of ten provinces and three territories. Canadian national holiday was enacted in 1879 under the name “Dominion Day.” In fact, the formation of the union of provinces under a new country is the basis of Canada’s July 1 celebration each year. Furthermore, the ‘Dominion Day’ changed into ‘Canada Day on October 27, 1982. The official lyrics “O Canada” were finalized in 1968 by a special joint
committee of the Senate and House of Commons. This day also marks the anniversary of the officially proclaimed “O Canada” as national anthem. The Royal anthem plays ‘God Save The Queen’ at some festive locations celebrating Canada Day. Although, the National Capital Commission (NCC) has already invited all Canadians to celebrate 146th birthday on Parliament Hill, yet Ottawa always welcomes Canadians coming from all across Canada. These Canadians reach the national Capital to enjoy the specifically designed festivities. This year again, thousands of Canadians will gather together on the Parliament Hill just to celebrate their country’s birthday. In the morning, they will be able to attend the Peace Tower carillon concert at 9:00 a.m., the traditional flag-raising ceremony at 9:30 a.m., and at 10:00 a.m. the changing of the Guard. This year’s Canada Day’s noon show features an amazing lineup of talented Canadian performers such as Carly Rae Jepsen and special guests including Chris and Hadfield. The Noon Show also includes a fly-past of CF-18 fighter jets and the Snowbirds Demonstration. The show will be hosted by Measha Brueggergosman, while Hélène Campbell will be the special guest. The show will be featuring: Carly Rae Jepsen, British Columbia Pop- dance, Marie-Mai, QuebecPop rock, Metric, Ontario- Indie
rock, Terri Clark, Alberta- Country, Karim Ouellet, Quebec- Pop, Jennifer Gillis, British Columbia- Musical theatre and a special performance by Commander Chris Hadfield. Also, the NCC will present the evening show on Parliament Hill, festivities on Canada Day official sites and the spectacular fireworks display as the citizens gather in the Capital. The Evening Show includes a variety of performances by Canadian artists. The fact is even the people staying behind also go outdoors to enjoy BBQ parties and the fireworks all over the country. Let’s not forget, the multicultural society has contributed significantly to keep Canada going with excellence. Last year, a spectacular Canada Day Celebration at Strathcona Park was successfully organized by the Muslim Coordinating Council (MCCNCR) and the Indonesian Canadian Congress (ICC) followed by a positive feedback from so many Canadians of different ethnic and religious background. It was a lot of fun, especially for the children. The event served as a good bridge to facilitate Muslims to build ties with Canadians of other faiths. The international mouth watering food and the delicious dishes from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Eritrea, Somalia, Egypt, Yemen, Lebanon, Palestine, Iraq, and Turkey were available. Moreover, Zuhar prayer in congregation was offered. Also, there was a lovely play by students of Furqaan
Qur’an School in Ottawa.(muslimlink). Regardless of insurmountable difficulty, a tolerance level among the members of this type of multi-cultural society is a real blessing, as it has been playing big role in promoting diversity in schools, work places, businesses and academic institutions. Of course, the credit goes to millions of motivated immigrants who kept building this nation to make Canada an attractive country to live peacefully. Constitutionally, the Canadian society enjoys equal rights, opportunities regardless of their ethnicity, race, creed or color. As said above, every year, tens of thousands of Canadians celebrate Canada Day in grand style in the nation’s capital flocking to Parliament Hill to take part in the Canada Day Noon Show with the Governor General, the Prime Minister, and the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. Of course, Canadians do deserve to celebrate their legacy, pride and opportunities. July 1 celebrations take place in all other parts of the country. And, the 146th Happy Canada Day celebration in Surrey BC features: world class entertainment, great food, games & amusement rides, and a spectacular fireworks finale. Plus, there will be a main stage presented by Chevron, for another stellar lineup. It doesn’t end here as “shoot-

Similarly, let us continue
to come forward and represent the community in discussions about common issues such as civil rights, hunger, homelessness, and domestic violence.

Preparing for the Month of Mercy By: Maryam Amirebrahimi A lot of us yearn to prepare for Ramadan, but we have no idea how to start. Below are a few tips to insha’Allah (Allah willing) help prepare our minds and hearts for this upcoming Month of Mercy. Make the Intention Simple to do, with a powerful impact. Maybe you want to prepare for Ramadan, but between school, work, family, and your other activities, you just have no idea how to fit in ‘prepare for Ramadan’ time. Instead of separating ‘prepare for Ramadan’ from your daily activities, make your daily activities a MEANS of preparation for Ramadan. For example, perhaps your mom asked you to pick up your brother from school on the day you finally had time to read a few extra pages of Qur’an. Instead of feeling upset as if you have lost a great opportunity to prepare for Ramadan, make the intention that you are picking up your brother to please Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala (exalted is He) and prepare for Ramadan by obeying your mother, helping your family members, building ties of kinship…and the list continues. The point is that preparing for Ramadan does not have to be some magnificent, enormous, extra-special thing that needs to be done at a certain time of the day. Many of your daily actions can be turned into Ramadan preparation actions with a sincere intention insha’Allah. Do these Easy-to-Reap-Reward Actions 1. Ask Allah to forgive your brothers and sisters. “Whoever seeks forgiveness for believing men and believing women, Allah will write for him a good deed for each believing man and believing woman.” [atTabarani, classed as hasan by al-Albani] 2. It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah radi allahu `anhu (may Allah be pleased with him) said “The Messenger of Allah [peace be upon him] said: ‘Whoever says subhan Allah wa bi hamdih (praise and glory be to Allah) 100 times, morning and evening, his sins will be erased even if they are like the foam on the sea.” [Bukhari, Muslim] 3. If a person says, “Subhan Allah (glory be to Allah),” 100 times, a thousand good deeds are recorded for him and a thousand bad deeds are wiped away. [Muslim 2073] 4. Remember Allah (swt) when you go shopping. “Whoever enters a market and says: “Laa ilaha illallah wahdahu la shareeka lah, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu yuhyi wa yumeetu wa huwa hayyun laa yamoot, bi yadihil khair, wa huwa ‘ala kulli shayin qadeer.” [There is nothing worthy of worship except Allah, alone without partner, to Him belongs dominion and praise; He causes life and death and He is the Living and does not die; in His Hand is all the good, and He is over all things competent] Allah will write for them a million good deeds and erase a million bad deeds and raise him a million levels.” [at-Tirmidhi, classed as hasan by al-Albani] Up Your Worship To help condition your heart for this bless-
Another example is that of finishing the Qur’an: Objective: Finish the entire Qur’an in this month. Method: Read 4 pages of the Qur’an after every salah. 5 prayers X 4 pages = 20 pages. 20 pages= about 1 juz. 1 juz X 30= the entire Qur’an. So many Muslims have passed away since last month. So many people have not made it to Ramadan this year. Last year was their very last Ramadan. Will you make it to this Ramadan? Will this be your last Ramadan? Aim to strive this Ramadan. With a very small amount of effort, such as just making a small intention or adding a few extra acts of worship, we pray that Allah (swt) will help our hearts soften and honor us with making it easy to turn to Him and open up to Him. May Allah (swt) make us of the successful in Ramadan, and make it easy for us to turn to Him. Courtesy: SuhaibWebb
ed month, intensify your worship before to keep doing them all throughout Ramadan. Ramadan begins. Just a small, consistent If you can’t pray your 2 rak`at after dhuhr amount is enough. The Prophet told us: (the afternoon prayer) right away, make sure “The deeds most loved by Allah are those to do them as soon as you get the chance. done regularly, even if they are small.” Your plan might look something like this: Objective: Pray all of my fardh prayers. (Bukhari, Muslim) For example, say I always pray 2 rak`at Method: Envision myself on the Day of (units )of sunnah (compulsory prayer) af- Judgment seeing the weight of praying my ter ishaa’ (the night prayer) from this day sunnah consistently during this month. Make until Ramadan begins—and even through sure to pray sunnah immediately after salah Ramadan, let me make the intention that (prayer). If I cannot, do it as soon as the opI will now pray 2 extra rak`at of sunnah portunity arises—don’t let myself put it off! after ishaa’. And every time I pray these extra 2 rak`at, which are more than what I normally pray, let me remember that I am doing these with the intention of asking Allah (swt) to help me be prepared to Stress, depression, anxiety, fear/phobia, overweight problem strive and exert my utmost effort during smoking/alcohol addiction, lack of confidence, relationship Ramadan. Make a Du`a’ (prayer) List Today /sex problem, insomnia, peace of mind, nail biting & more This is THE MONTH to ask for EVERYTHING, both related to this life and the Next. Let us not wait until the last 10 nights to make special du`a’, and then once `Eid passes realize that we completely forgot about fifty other things we needed to make du`a’ for. Let’s start making our lists Ph.D (Glasgow-UK), RCCH, MCH, Cht(Canada) & now, and add to it as more things come our way. Integrated Encyclopedia of the Qur’an ceremonies held in BC
The Centre for Islamic Sciences (www.cis-ca.org) announced publication of the first volume of the Integrated Encyclopedia of the Qur’an (IEQ) on June 15th in Richmond and Surreuy Jameh Masjid and on16th in Masjid Al-Salam Burnaby. Mufti Asim Rashid was the coordinator of this Volume one A-to Bea- launching ceremony publically in each BCMA chapter and he emphasied about its importance in Muslim Ummah and speciallaly for our youth. He introduiced the guest speaker editor of Integrated Encyclopedia of the Qur’an Mr. Muzaffar Iqbal. Mr. Iqbal further described the details of its preparation including the source of collections, time, efforts, funds. He said Alhamdulillah we are able to published first volume and the seven more volumes are in process and it needs your support to be completed. This Encyclopaedia is based entirely on primary sources and held to a high standard of academic rigor. IEQ draws on a wide range of traditional Muslim sources, including exegeses, Hadith collections and commentaries, classical lexicons, biographical dictionaries, universal
histories, works of jurisprudence, Prophetic biographies, and treatises on spiritual and moral psychology-some of which have never before been presented in any encyclopaedic work in a Western language. Based entirely on primary sources and held to a high standard of academic rigor, IEQ integrates source material at several levels: its conceptual structure presents an integrated view of the overall message of the Qur’an; it incorporates and integrates various strands of Islamic scholarly tradition on the Divine text; and it presents a cohesive, cross-referenced text that is at once contemporary and classical. The carefully chosen lemmata reflect the thematic structure of the Qur’an itself, while the rich bibliography at the end of each entry provides a valuable resource for serious researchers. Conceived as a seven-volume authoritative contribution to and an in-depth reference work about Muslim scholarship on the Qur’an, this landmark publication presents a trove of knowledge about the Qur’an and its exegetical tradition as an indispensable tool for specialists as well as the engaged
general reader. The seventh volume is devoted to indices and supplementary material, including a thematic cross-referencing index of the entries in the preceding volumes. Following practices of respect and priority normative to the Islamic scholarly tradition, the first volume of IEQ begins with the entry on the Supreme Name, “Allah,” followed by “Ahmad,” the second of the Prophet’s two proper names in the Qur’an, and proceeds thereafter in alphabetical order. The volume ends with the entry on the “Beautiful Names of Allah”. Thus bounded by entries on the Divine, this inaugural volume of the seven-volume IEQ brings to an English readership a wealth of scholarly material not found in any other reference work on the Qur’an. The first volume also includes a contextual introduction situating the project in the broader history of discourse on the Qur’an. The forty-seven entries of this volume provide extensive original translations of
source material and tap into a vast range of resources to present comprehensive and authoritative articles on concepts, persons, events, things, and places mentioned in the Qur’an and its commentary tradition. New Huffaz graduate from Darul Quraan Academy of Canada
Darul Quraan Academy of Canada Surrey held a ceremony celebrating the memorization of the Holy Quran on June 23 at Mirage Banquet Hall in Cloverdale. Before Maghrib prayer, all Muslim Scholars and Imams from different Mosques took part in Dastaar Bandi, where the Banquet hall resounded with Takbeer. Parents, Teachers, friends and family were equally happy for the Huffaz at this moment. Maulana Zafar Abid thanked all the participants, scholars, guests and teachers. The students Hafiz Bilaal Khan & Hafiz Mustafa Mohammad were the 43rd and 44th students to become a Hafiz at this academy. At the end of speeches of Islamic Scholars and fundraising ceremony, both students recited some verses from the Holy Quran with beautiful spiritual Qirat. Before Dastar Bandi, master of Ceremony Br. Imran Ali welcomed the guests and explained the purpose of the gathering. Maulana Ghulam Bhaji recited few verses of Sura Rehman. Many Imams and scholars from local mosques participated and delivered speeches in Urdu and English languages. All of them
focused on the importance of teaching of Islam, memorization of Quran, status in Jannah of huffaz, their parents as well as their teachers who made them hafiz. Speakers included Qari Abdul Wahab, Mufti Shujaat Ali Nadwi, and Mulana Zafar Abid who requested the parents to send their children in Islamic Madrassas or centers as well as other general educational institutions. Here they learn Nazara Quran and memorize the Quraan. In BC, we already have shortage of Huffaz and scholars are focusing on our youth so they can be better Muslims by having knowledge of both Deen (religion) and Duniya (world). The speakers also reminded the audience that memorizing the holy Quran is a great achievement. However, the most important thing is that the person follows the Quran and Sunnah throughout his life for which he receives great rewards from Allah (SWT) in Aakhira. Dr. Munir El- Kassam, guest speaker from Toronto, was also asked to raise the fund for the academy . After reciting few verses of Sura Mohammad,
Ankaboot, and Qamar and references of Hadiths Dr. Munir emphasized the donation to Islamic Madrasa and school to promote the deen in our youth. He helped collecting some money to pay monthly expenses of this Madrasa and its improvement. More than $51,000 was raised for the academy that night. Many Islamic Centres / Madrasas in local Muslim communities are offering services to educate youth about being a peaceful Muslim and give them knowledge of Islam in light of teachings of Quaran and Holly Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) Sunnah. Darul Uloom Al-Islamiah has been serving BC Muslim community for over a decade. Darul Uloom began its journey in Edmonton, Alberta
in 1997 and moved to Surrey, BC in 1999. Now under the banner of Darul Quran Academy of Canada, we are teaching Quran and Nazra. We have the services of dedicated, well known and experienced teachers. After successfully running Nazra and Hifzul Quran classes, Darul Quran Academy has a future plan of starting Higher Islamic Education (Aalim / Aalimah) course for both boys and girls Insha`Allah. Also, the new facility would have adult Quran learning programs as well as Jumah Salah, Taraweeh, Janaza Salah, Dua of any occasion, Dawat-o-Tableegh and other programs as required. The organization plans to run this Academy 7 days a week Insha`Allah and humbly requests you to please support them.

What do people do? In many towns and cities, municipal governments organize a range of events, often outdoors. These include pancake breakfasts, parades, concerts, carnivals, festivals, firework displays and citizenship ceremonies for new Canadian citizens. The celebrations often have a patriotic mood. Canada’s national flag is widely displayed and a lot of people paint their faces red and white, which are Canada’s national colors. The celebrations in Ottawa, which is Canada’s capital city, are particularly exuberant. In the province of Quebec, many home leases start on July 1 and last for exactly one year. Hence, many people in Quebec spend Canada Day moving their possessions from one house to another. In this province, Canada Day is also known as Moving Day. In the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, July 1 is also Memorial Day. This commemorates the heavy loss of life in the Newfoundland Regiment on the first day of the Battle of the Somme during World War I. In Newfoundland and Labrador, the morning of July 1 is usually somber. Flags are flown at half-mast and memorial services are held at cenotaphs (war memorials). In the afternoon, Canada Day celebrations in the province are similar to those in the rest of the country. Public life July 1 is a statutory holiday in Canada unless it falls
on a Sunday; then it moves to July 2. All provincial governments observe this day. Many organizations, businesses and stores are closed, although some book stores, pharmacies and gas stations may be open. Post offices are closed. As Canada Day falls in the Canadian summer holiday period, all schools are closed. Public transport services may operate to their usual or a reduced timetable. In some areas, extra services are provided for large scale events. Street closures due to concerts, parades and festivals may cause some local disruption to traffic.
Symbols Canada’s national flag is seen on Canada Day. This consists of two vertical red rectangles separated by a white square. The white square contains a red image of a maple leaf. Canada’s national colors are red and white and are used in many ways on Canada Day. Some people wear red and white clothing and others paint their faces in these colors.
Economy Canada is the world’s eleventhlargest economy, with a 2011 nominal GDP of approximately US$1.74 trillion. It is a member of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the G8, and is one of the world’s top ten trading nations, with a highly globalized economy. Canada is a mixed economy, ranking above the US
and most western European nations on the Heritage Foundation’s index of economic freedom. The largest foreign importers of Canadian goods are the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan. In the past century, the growth of Canada’s manufacturing, mining, and service sectors has transformed the nation from a largely rural economy to an advanced, urbanized, industrial one. Like many other First World nations, the Canadian economy is dominated by the service industry, which employs about three-quarters of the country’s workforce. However, Canada is unusual among developed countries in the importance of its primary sector, in which the logging and petroleum industries are two of the most prominent components. Canada is one of the few developed nations that are net exporters of energy. Atlantic Canada possesses vast offshore deposits of natural gas, and Alberta also hosts large oil and gas resources. The immense Athabasca oil sands give Canada the world’s secondlargest proven oil reserves, after Saudi Arabia. Canada is additionally one of the world’s largest suppliers of agricultural products; the Canadian Prairies are one of the most important global producers of wheat, canola, and other grains.[140] Canada is a major producer of zinc and uranium, and is a leading exporter of many oth-
er minerals, such as gold, nickel, aluminum, and lead. Many towns in northern Canada, where agriculture is difficult, are sustainable because of nearby mines or sources of timber. Canada also has a sizable manufacturing sector centered in southern Ontario and Quebec, with automobiles and aeronautics representing particularly important industries. Canada’s economic integration with the United States has increased significantly since World Science and technology in Canada The Canadarm robotic manipulator in action on Space Shuttle Discovery during the STS-116 mission in 2006. In 2011, Canada spent approximately C$29.9 billion on domestic research and development. The country has produced ten Nobel laureates in physics, chemistry and medicine, and is home to a number of global technology firms, such as smartphone maker Research In Motion and video games developer BioWare. Canada ranks twelfth in the world for Internet users as a
proportion of the population, with over 28 million users, equivalent to around 84 percent of its total 2011 population. The Canadian Space Agency operates a highly active space program, conducting deep-space, planetary, and aviation research, and developing rockets and satellites. In 1984, Marc Garneau became Canada’s first astronaut. As of 2012, nine Canadians have flown into space, over the course of fifteen manned missions. Canada is a participant in the International Space Station (ISS), and is a pioneer in space robotics, having constructed the Canadarm, Canadarm2 and Dextre robotic manipulators for the ISS and NASA. Since the 1960s, Canada’s aerospace industry has designed and built numerous marques of satellite, including Radarsat-1 and 2, ISIS and MOST. Canada has also produced a successful and widely used sounding rocket, the Black Brant; over 1,000 Black Brants have been launched since the rocket’s introduction in 1961.

Prepare Your Canadian Citizenship The Citizenship Residency Requirement Under the Citizenship Act, an applicant for Canadian citizenship must have resided in Canada for at least 3 years in the 4 years immediately preceding submission of the citizenship application. For individuals who have been a permanent resident for the last four years, this is an easy calculation. You simply add up the days that you spent outside the country, and confirm that you were present in Canada for at least 1095 days. For individuals who have been a permanent resident for less than four years, the calculation may be more complicated. If you became a permanent resident three years ago, and you never left Canada for more than 24 hours at a time since becoming a permanent resident, then – voila! – you meet the residency requirement. But if you did take international trips since becoming a permanent resident, then you need to make some more sophisticated calculations in order to qualify for citizenship. And you’re only in a position to make these “sophisticated calculations” if you lived in Canada before you became a permanent resident and within the last four years. If you did not live in Canada before you became a permanent resident, or if the time that you lived in Canada before becoming a permanent resident is outside the “last 4 year” range
- then you need to wait until you accumulate those 1095 days before applying. But if you did live in Canada before becoming a permanent resident, and within the last 4 years, then you might have some additional options. The time you resided in Canada before you became a permanent resident counts as 1/2 time. This means that for every two days that you resided in Canada since becoming a permanent resident, you can count one of them as fulfilling the 1095 days obligation. So if you lived in Canada for a year before becoming a permanent resident, and you were present in Canada for 100% of that year, you can add 182 days to the number of total days you have spent in Canada since becoming a permanent resident. Individuals who have been a permanent resident of Canada for less than 3 years can also use this benefit. For example, if you have been a permanent resident for only two years and have spent a total of 730 days in Canada, you can still qualify for citizenship if you lived in Canada for the two years immediately preceding your acquisition of permanent resident Status, but only if you never took a trip outside of Canada in those two years. It’s a generous calculation system: one that tries to give as many advantages as possible to applicants, so that you can apply as quickly as possible for the
benefit of Canadian citizenship. You should be aware, however, that there are certain periods of time . spent in Canada- that will not help you meet the residence requirement. For example, time that you spent serving in jail will not count towards the residence requirement. If you think that you meet the residence requirement, you can get started with your citizenship application now. Don’t worry about making a mistake with your calculation - we’ll make sure that you meet the residence requirement before you submit your application.

Miracle Media one step ahead to Unite with Print Media Since joining the Miracle media group in 2002, Managing editor M. Naseer Pirzada has always welcomed any new additions to Muslim Print Media. He was among the first people who congratulated Al Ameen, Anmol(Canada Times), Pakistan Post, Fijian Herald, Al Wasat, Urdu Journal, Community Times Canada and now Urdu Pakistan Times. MMG has enjoyed a great relationship with others, especially Al Ameen Post where we share the local reports, pictures, advertisements designs and even Miracle Boxes placed for the dis-

a meeting with the Sunrise Group Media Mr. Bilal Hafeez Khan
(Publisher) and Mr. Haris Hafeez Khan(Managing Editor) of Community Times Canada at Pak Urban Masala Grill Restaurant in Surrey. In this meeting he welcomed the addition of new print media in British Columbia. Mr. Pirzada congratulated both young brothers and mentioned that now the time has come to unite the Muslim Media and we should be ready to deliver a strong message not only in Muslim community but also convey our issues to the mainstream media for their attention. He said for having a strong voice we have to be united. Let us start this by sharing the news, reports and pictures of local events and even advertisements which will
provide proof that we are united. It will also save our time and money, as we are not having sufficient manpower and resources of funds to carry our mission. Mr. Bilal and Mr. Harris agreed to share all resources with each other and showed their willingness to unite and become a media strength of BC. Miracle Media and Sunrise Group also request other South Asian Media to move forward to unite for the betterment pf fair Journalism in BC. “We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided.”
Roofing and Renovation Solutions By: Imran Tipu (RTM Roofing & Renovations) In view of coming Canada Day, this article is about the “Origin of Modern Canadian building Architecture”. The Building Architectural background of Canada The architectural background of Canada is, with the exception of that of Canadian First Nations, closely linked to the techniques and styles developed in Canada, Europe and the United States. However, design has long needed to be adapted to Canada’s climate and geography, and at times has also reflected the uniqueness of Canadian culture. Canadian Climate and Geography Canada’s geography is highly diverse, and there are thus important differences in architecture. In most of Canada, building materials are abundant, and the price of lumber and stone is low. The major exception is the prairie and the far north, where wood is in short supply. In the far north transportation costs of all goods are extremely high, and any construction project is expensive. For the most part, Canada is secure from major natural disasters that affect the architecture of other nations. However, the Canadian climate needs to be taken into account for every structure. Buildings need to be well insulated to protect their inhabitants against the cold of winter while also being able to withstand the heat of summer. Buildings must be designed to survive the repeated cycle of freezing and thawing that can shatter stone and move buildings off their foundations. In parts of Canada, buildings must also be able to survive the heavy weight of snow, which can collapse certain structures. In coastal British Columbia, the region’s heavy rainfall is a factor in weatherproofing buildings, and ignoring it can have expensive consequences. Further south, in what is today Southern Ontario and Quebec the Iroquois society lived in permanent agricultural settlements holding several hundred to several thousand people. The standard form of housing was the long house. These were large structures, several times longer than they were wide holding a large number of people. They were built with a frame of saplings or branches, covered with a layer of bark or woven mats. On the Prairies the standard form of life was a nomadic one, with the people often moving to a new location each day to follow the bison herds. Housing thus had to be portable, and the tipi was developed. The tipi consisted of a thin wooden frame and an outer covering of animal hides. The structures could be quickly erected, and were light enough to transport long distances. In
the Interior of British Columbia the standard for of home was the semi-permanent pit house, thousands of relics of which, known as quiggly holes are scattered across the Interior landscape. These were structures shaped like an upturned bowl, placed on top of a 3-or-4foot-deep (0.91 or 1.2 m) pit. The bowl, made of wood, would be covered with an insulating layer of earth. The house would be entered by climbing down a ladder at the centre of the roof. Impact of First Nation on Building Architecture of Canada Prior to the arrival of Europeans the First Nations lived in a wide array of structures.
quite warm. In the summer months, when the igloos melted, tents made of seal skin, or other hides, were used. The Thule adopted a design similar to the pit houses of the BC interior, but because of the lack of wood they instead used whale bones for the fra me. Changes on Canadian Building Architecture by European Immigrants The first Europeans to inhabit what would become Canada were the French settlers of New France and Acadia. The initial settlements at Port Royal and Quebec City were most concerned with defense, against both First Nations and the English. For most of the early history of Quebec city it was dominated
Gothic style Parliament Building The semi-nomadic peoples of the Maritimes, Quebec, and Northern Ontario, such as the Mi’kmaq, Cree, and Algonquin generally lived in wigwams. These were wood framed structures, covered with an outer layer of bark, reeds, or woven mats; usually in a cone shape although sometimes a dome. These groups changed locations every few weeks or months. They would take the outer layer of the wigwam with them, and leave the heavy wood frame in place. The frame could be reused if the tribe returned to the location at a later date. Some of the most impressive First Nations architecture was that of the settled people of the west coast such as the Haida. These people used advanced carpentry and joinery skills to construct large houses of red cedar planks. These were large square, solidly built houses. The most advanced design was the six beam house, named for the number of beams that supported the roof. The front of each house would be decorated with a heraldic pole, the pole and sometimes the house would be brightly painted with artistic designs. In the far north, where wood was scarce and solid shelter essential for survival, several unique and innovative architectural styles were developed. One of the most famous is the igloo, a domed structure made of snow, which was
by the large fortress and outer walls. The city was divided into two sections. The Upper Town was home to the fortress, Intendant’s house, and churches, these structures were built of stone in imitation of the Baroque architecture then popular in France. The Lower Town consisted of densely packed structures on narrow streets, and was the commercial centre and home to the workers. In Lower Canada the Georgian style was employed by the English minority, but this minority dominated the commercial and political class. French-Canadian architecture kept many of its traditional forms, but also adopted some English styles. Throughout British North America the Georgian style was mostly used by the middle and upper classes, and also for institutional buildings such as churches and government structures. In rural areas, and among the urban poor, simpler styles dominated. Impact on Canadian Building Architecture by Population Growth and Expansion The pattern of building in the west was very different. The first settlements in much of the West were the forts of the Hudson’s Bay Company and North West Company and the cabins of the Métis. The next important presence was that of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The railway needed to
build stations every 13 km of its 4200 km route in order to re-water the steam engines. Many of these stations became a nucleus of towns. These stations were built to standardized designs, with a number of different sizes for stations of differing importance. Victorian Style Building Architecture Victorian styles of architecture dominated in Canada from the mid-nineteenth century up to the First World War. Unlike during the previous centuries there was now easy communication between Canada and the architectural centers of the United States and Britain. It was common for Canadian architects to travel, study, and work in these other areas, and it was also increasingly common to hire foreign architects. This meant that ideas and styles developed elsewhere were quickly adopted in Canada. These were diverse styles, but one common element was attempts to revive ideas of the past. The first such style to come to prominence was the Gothic Revival style, which first came to Canada in the 1830s. This became the dominant architectural style for churches, especially Anglican and Roman Catholic ones, which both embraced Gothic Revival as evidence of their conservatism. Modern Canadian Building Architecture At the same time developments, especially those in United States were not ignored. Toronto closely followed Chicago and New York as the home of skyscrapers employing new steel framed construction and elevators. In the latter half of the twentieth century, Toronto’s influence on other Canadian cities, largely because of the control of capital (especially banks) meant that Western Canadian cities, particularly Vancouver, became filled with lesser versions of their counterparts in Toronto (e.g. TD Tower (Vancouver), Bentall Centre (Vancouver) which displaced the city’s older and distinctly Edwardian flavor. In Vancouver during the 1950s and 1960s, Modernist architectures inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and fostered by the unique building materials and physical setting resulted in various daring new styles of housing, particularly on Vancouver’s ritzy North Shore, featuring open beams, glass walls, and innovative floor plans. Vancouver architect Arthur Erickson, more known for grandiose exercises in institutional concrete such as Robson Square and Simon Fraser University, pioneered the British Columbia version of the “West Coast style”, After the Second World War, the desire for unique Canadian styles faded as the International Style came to dominate the Canadian scene in the 1950s through 1970s. Many of the most prominent Canadian projects of this period were designed by foreigners, who won open contests. GREAT CANADIANS once remarked “Leave the beaten track behind occasionally and dive into the woods. Every time you do you will be certain to find something you have never seen before.” Canadians are most grateful he followed his own advice.
Tommy Douglas
Alexander Graham Bell Alexander Graham Bell, the man considered to be one of the most important inventors of the 19th century, was born March 3, 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Even though he was not born in Canada, many of his greatest scientific discoveries were made on Canadian soil. Perhaps because his mother was a gifted pianist, Alexander displayed an aptitude for all things associated with sound and pitch. This early curiosity marked the beginning of Bell’s lifelong fascination with sound and speech. In 1870, the family immigrated to Canada, settling in Brantford, Ontario, where Alexander fully recovered. At the age of 23, Alexander relocated to Boston, Massachusetts where he worked to publicize his father’s Visible Speech system It was in Brantford that Bell’s greatest idea was born. While relaxing atop the bluff he referred to as “his dreaming place,” Bell allowed himself to brainstorm about a “harmonic telegraph” device he was working on. Alexander figured that if he could make an electric current undulate the same way air does when sound is produced, he could definitely transmit speech telegraphically. This daydream became the basis for the invention of the telephone. Bell needed an assistant to actualize his idea and he found the perfect match in Thomas Watson, a gifted young electrician and model maker. After patenting the invention and staging a demonstration of the telephone at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876, Bell went on to form the Bell Telephone Company in 1877. Throughout his life, he worked closely with the American Association for the Promotion of the Teaching of Speech to ensure deaf people were not marginalized or excluded from everyday life. Free from financial constraints, he devoted the remainder of his life to inventing, and many of his most inspired creations were developed at Beinn Bhreagh. Though he is best known for the telephone, Bell was responsible for several other key inventions. Thirty years after Bell’s death on August 2, 1922, the Canadian government constructed the Alexander Graham Bell National Historical Site in Baddeck, Nova Scotia,. Bell
Tommy Douglas 1961. For more than 50 years, his staunch devotion to social causes, rousing powers of speech and pugnacious charm made Tommy C. Douglas an unstoppable political force. The child of Scottish immigrants, Douglas spent his formative years in Winnipeg, Manitoba in a home where politics, philosophy and religion were side dishes at the dinner table. When money was tight, Douglas and his two sisters had to drop in and out of school as they worked occasional jobs to help pay the bills. His family’s socialist leanings were solidified after Douglas was hospitalized at the age of 10. Due to a bone infection suffered four years earlier, Douglas’s knee required several operations. The surgery p g y
saved Douglas’s leg and would serve as his inspiration for his dream of universally accessible medical care. Not long after this, Douglas would witness firsthand the violent end of Canada’s first general strike on a day known as “Bloody Saturday”. After nine years in the House of Commons polishing his fiery public-speaking talent, Douglas was elected the leader of the provincial CCF in Saskatchewan. With interest in socialism peaking in post-war Canada, the party won a landslide victory in 1944 and Douglas found himself an instant celebrity as the head of North America’s first-ever socialist government. Amid widespread skepticism, Premier Douglas mobilized aggressively, passing more than 100 bills during his first term. Elected to five terms, he introduced Saskatchewan residents to car insurance, labour reforms and his long-standing dream of universal Medicare. But the years spent reforming his home province worked against him when he made his transition to national politics. The NDP won only 19 seats, and Douglas lost his cherished seat in Regina. Douglas continued to promote his socialist policy through the 1960s. Doug-
las died of cancer in 1986. Tommy Douglas’s legacy as a social policy innovator lives on. Social welfare, universal Medicare, old age pensions and mothers’ allowances -- Douglas helped keep these ideas, and many more, watching as more established political parties eventually came to accept these once-radical ideas as their own.
Terry Fox Terry Fox was 18 years old when
he was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer). Terry decided he wanted to help find a cure for cancer. Knowing that cancer research was severely under-funded in Canada, Terry decided to run across the country to raise money, and awareness, for cancer research. With fierce determination, Terry started his fund raising journey on April 12, 1980 in St John’s, Newfoundland. By February, 1981 Terry’s wish of raising one dollar from every Canadian was realized - the Marathon of Hope fund totalled $24.17 million. Terry died of cancer in June, 1981 at age 22. To date, over $400 million has been raised worldwide in Terry’s name. All funds raised in Canada support cancer research and are distributed by The National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC). The annual event continues to be known as The Terry Fox Run; the structural organization is known as The Terry Fox Foundation. The Terry Fox Foundation strives to keep the heroic effort and integrity that Terry embodied alive, while recognizing the duality of its mandate. The thousands of volunteers who organize more than 10,000 Run sites around the world have made the Terry Fox Run the success it is. Each year, millions of participants walk, jog and bike in memory of Terry Fox every year to raise money for cancer research. Ten Terry Fox Foundation offices in Canada support the magnificent work of our dedicated organizers, participants and donors

Trudeau, September 30, 1965 Pierre Trudeau held his philosophy of one Canada and a strong federal government before he became prime minister and he maintained it throughout his political career. Pierre Elliott Trudeau was born in Montreal in 1919. In 1940, Trudeau began studying law at the University of Montreal. Trudeau worked in Ottawa as advisor to the Privy Council before returning to Montreal. When Lester Pearson resigned as prime minister in 1968, Trudeau was invited to run as a candidate. A serious threat to national security occurred in 1970, when the terrorist group, Front de libération du Quebec, kidnapped a British diplomat. Upon the request of Quebec Premier Robert Bourassa, Trudeau imposed the War Measures Act. Trudeau was persuaded to return as party leader and the Liberals won the election the following year. Trudeau campaigned vigorously for the “No” supporters in the Quebec referendum in 1980.

Listing sitting on the market is expensive??? By: Sumaiyya Hasan In today’s challenging realestate market houses sit longer on the market without any offers which make them more expensive to carry. Mortgage payments, insurance, property taxes, utilities combined can literally cost thousands of dollars for the extra time house sit on the market. An average buyer judges your house in the initial few seconds of showing. Houses that are well prepared for selling are more appealing to buyers, usually sold sooner and for more money. Home staging is basically the art of preparing house for sale by enhancing the prominent features of the house to make it more appealing to buyers. The way we live in our houses and the way we sell our houses are two different things. Houses are neglected due to routine busy schedule and spaces are not serving the real purpose of rooms. While selling the house many best hidden architectural features need to be enhanced and not so good architectural features need to be down played. Home staging techniques help creating “First impression” in buyer’s eyes and make buyer see what you want him to see first. Staged homes usually create a pleasing atmosphere that potential buyer become emotionally connected to; envisioning themselves living in this home. Some helpful home staging tips are: • All reflective things including glass, metal, door handles, and appliances must be clean.
• Remove all the clutter and pack up everything you are not using. • Clean kitchen counter to make more space. • Try to eliminate personal items from bedrooms and bathrooms to give more hotel look. • Proper lighting is important, house should be bright. • Smelly homes can never appeal buyer’s .Try to deodorize the home to smell fresh. • Spacious look is very important. Make sure all the entrances are free flow. • De clutter outdoor spaces and curb appeal also play very important role. Researchers say staged homes sell 70% faster than non staged homes. A home stager and redesigned is always keen to help you to achieve your goal in terms of home sale for more money. Don’t forget to try if you are planning to sell your home.
Good Habits Shabnam Khan (M.P.C.P.)(R.P.C) - Family Counsellor To become a Better You, take inventory of your habits. Do you have a tendency to be negative in your thoughts and conversations? Are you always late for work? Do you worry all the time? Do you overeat? Understand, your habit may not be legally, ethically or morally wrong. It can be a seemingly innocuous action or attitude, a little thing, but if you don’t do something about it, you can go for years wasting time and energy being unproductive. The good news news is, You Can Change. You can develop better habits. Most studies of habitual behavior indicate that a habit can be broken in six weeks. Some habits can be even broken in twenty-one days. If you will discipline yourself for a month or so and be willing to suffer through the pain of change, you can rid yourself of a negative behavior, form a new healthy habit and rise to a new level of personal freedom. If you still see an area where you’re not responding in a positive manner, don’t make excuses. Take responsibility and say. “ I recognize what’s happening, and I Choose To Change. I’m going to develop better habits.” When you have been worrying for a long time, however, it’s almost second nature to you. You just wake up in the morning and start worrying about what the day will bring. In most cases, you can’t simply decide to stop worrying, You have to replace the neg-ative thoughts with positive faith-filled thoughts. Then every time you’re tempted to wor-ry, use that temptation as a reminder to dwell on good things. If you will replace those thoughts of worry with thoughts of hope, faith and victory, then you will retrain your mind. Each day is full of surprises and inconveniences, so you must accept the fact that not everything is going to be perfect. Sometimes your plans are not going to work as you scheduled them. When that happens, make a willful decision that you are not going to let the circumstances upset you. Don’t allow stress to steal your joy. Instead, be adapt-able and adjustable and seek to make the best of a bad situation. When you have that kind of attitude, minor irritations or inconveniences that may have stressed you out will cease to be a source of frustration. Train your mind to see the good. Get rid of any negative, conditioned responses. Everybody around you may be complaining, but you can find the good in every situation!! shabnam@skcounselling.ca

Musharraf Treason Case:
‘Violators of constitution will be tried under Article 6’ CASE History Dawn’s report, “General Musharraf’s Second Coup Reported November 3, 2007 President General Pervez Musharraf, in his capacity as the chief of army staff, on Saturday declared emergency rule in the country, suspended the country’s constitution, and issued a new Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO). The official announcement on the state-run Pakistan Television (PTV) came within minutes of a high-level meeting at the President House (Aiwan-i-Sadr) which was chaired by the President and attended by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, senior security and intelligence officials. Shortly before the official announcement all the private and independent news channels in the country were pulled off the cable network, leading to intense speculations of a possible emergency rule or martial law. This is the second time in General Musharraf’s tenure that an emergency rule has been imposed, and PCO issued. First it was at the time when the military seized power on October 12, 1999. This time it was when President Musharraf had already ruled the country for eight long years, and was faced with a situation where there was a strong possibility that the Supreme Court may rule against his move to get himself elected for the second time as the head of the state. According to some details of the new PCO made available to the me-
dia, the National Assembly, Senate, provincial assemblies, the prime minister, provincial chief ministers, federal and provincial ministers, governors and all those in the government services will continue to function normally. However, it was not clear how this will be possible, or be legitimate, with President Musharraf resorting to the extra-constitutional action of suspending the constitution and issuing his own provisional constitutional order or PCO.Soon after the proclamation of emergency by Gen Musharraf, an eight-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, reportedly set aside the decision. Setting aside General Musharraf’s proclamation of emergency, the panel asked all members of the superior judiciary against taking oath under the new PCO. The Supreme Court, in its order, termed Gen Musharraf’s action “illegal and unconstitutional” and asked the corps commanders and all civil and military officials not to take oath under the PCO. Till filing of this report, the judges of the SC were still inside the court building. However, under the circumstances chances of a major rebellion on part of the superior judiciary appeared highly unlikely. In any case, legal experts said, the government must have contemplated such a resistance, and as has been the past practice during military rule, some of the judges will not be invited
to take oath, some will refuse, and a few will accept the new order to provide legitimacy to the this kind of emergency rule. In a latest development Justice Abdul Hamid Dogar was sworn in as a Chief Justice of Pakistan by the President. There were also reports that some of the lawyers, including the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan, have been taken into custody. Mr. Ahsan’s wife told reporters that her husband was arrested soon after the imposition of emergency. Although news of a possible emergency rule had been doing rounds for the past several days, on Saturday it became quite evident when a large contingent of paramilitary troops started to arrive in Islamabad, and cable operators were asked to pull the plug on all independent news channels, including DawnNews, Geo, ARY and Aaj TV. Land telephone lines and mobile phones are also partially down in Islamabad and communication has become almost impossible in many parts of the capital. TV channels and newspapers had been reporting for the past few days that the government had made up its mind to declare emergency rule October 12, 1999 The 1999 Pakistani coup d’état was a bloodless coup d’état in which the Pakistan Army and Chief of Army Staff and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Pervez Musharraf overthrew elected
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his existing elected government. On 12 October 1999, Sharif replaced Musharraf with Inter-Services Intelligence Director-General Lieutenant-General Ziauddin Butt as Chief of Army Staff while Musharraf was en route from Sri Lanka to Karachi, Pakistan. Sharif ordered the commercial airline on which Musharraf was traveling to not land in Pakistan airspace, although supposedly the airplane did not have a sufficient amount of fuel to do so. The Pakistan Army learned of the order and seized control of Karachi airport in order to allow the plane to land, and beginning the coup d’état. On 14 October 1999, two days after the coup, Musharraf declared a state of emergency and issued a Provisional Constitutional Order. The Provisional Constitutional Order created many issues, as a large number of justices refused to take oath under it. The Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered that Musharraf could only allow army rule to remain in place for three years, and as a result, Musharraf held a national referendum on 30 April 2002. Many alleged that this referendum was heavily fraudulent, although Musharraf’s government held that these accusations were simply propaganda spread by the opposition. After the Kargil War, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was already on bad terms with Chief of Army Staff General Pervez Musharraf. Sharif assigned blame for the political
and military disaster on Musharraf, and Musharraf placed the blame on Sharif. On 12 October 1999, Sharif dismissed Musharraf and nominated the Inter-Services Intelligence Director, Lieutenant General Ziauddin Butt, in his place. Musharraf, who at that time was on an official visit to Sri Lanka, immediately returned on a commercial airliner. Also on board were Major-General Tariq Majid and Brigadier-General Nadeem Taj. In an attempt to thwart Musharraf’s return to Karachi, Pakistan, Sharif ordered the plane to be diverted to Nawabshah. When this failed, Sharif ordered the Karachi airport to refuse to allow the plane to land; the airport used civil aviation planes to block the runway. The Pakistan Army, under directions from Lieutenant General Muzaffar Usmani, seized the control tower and allowed the plane to land. After this, troops took control of the state-run television station in Islamabad, encircled the Prime Minister House, gained control of international airports, and cut international phone lines. On 14 October 1999, Musharraf declared a state of emergency and issued a Provisional Constitutional Order. These designated Musharraf as Chief Executive, suspended the federal and provincial Parliaments, and suspended the Constitution, although they left Muhammad Rafiq Tarar in office as President.

Vancouver Canucks officially hire John Tortorella This is not the John Tortorella you’ve seen before, at least for now. Call it the remorse and
passion, preparation, playoff acumen, specific readying for particular opponents, detail, excite-
rehabilitation of Tortorella, a fiery Boston native, 55 this week, who suddenly was unemployed a month ago. Jarred by his unexpected joblessness, Tortorella crawled into a metaphorical hole to shout at himself, mull what went wrong and what he could do to fix it. Then Mike Gillis came a-calling. And Gillis, president and general manager of the Vancouver Canucks, loved what he heard from the coach – attitude,
ment – and perhaps Gillis, like owner Francesco Aquilini – also was a little dazzled by the diamonds on Tortorella’s Stanley Cup ring from Tampa Bay in 2004. The Canucks’ new head coach – made official Tuesday morning – most of all promised not to be “that lunatic” (his own words). That’s the image the 5-foot-8 coach and his grey goatee has come to be known by in the little village that is the NHL.
His debut as Canucks coach was a highly managed affair that befits the calculating organization. After a press release, inhouse feature interview, and a YouTube interview, more than 50 journalists descended on Rogers Arena for their own glimpse. Aquilini was in the crowd, as were four players, captain Henrik Sedin, Ryan Kesler, Jason Garrison and Chris Higgins. Most of all, everyone at the club wants people to know that this is an evolved, Vancouver version of Tortorella. For a team with expensive tickets, barely able to sell out its playoff games last spring (both losses), this Tortorella is not the same guy who was so often prone to bark nasty curses at reporters or his own players – in one scene from late 2011 on HBO, the curses spat at his millionaire troops registered at seven in 60 seconds. Whether Tortorella can succeed where former Canucks
coach Alain Vigneault failed remains to be seen. They are not dissimilar, with a focus on defence. But such questions remain abstract. On Tuesday at Rogers Arena it was a wedding day, celebratory, with smiles, throbs of love. Full of promise. Emotional pain, late-night caterwauling come later. Should the Canucks struggle in their new, more difficult division (goodbye Colorado, hello Los Angeles, San Jose and Anaheim), the version of Tortorella might be less 3.0 and more anachronistic. Tuesday, he was everyone’s chum. He had a big smile. He shook hands with reporters. He thanked one radio reporter for her question about his charitable work. So what stoked the legend, the angry man? There remains a hint of a Boston accent in Tortorella’s voice, answering a question about “snapping” that he (politely) cut off. “That’s a big part of it. I can’t stand losing. Everybody says, ‘Be a good loser.’ I think if you’re a good loser, you’re a loser.” It drew a smile from Kes-

ler, who later said: “We need to be tougher to play against.” Where the Canucks failed last season, in the estimation of Tortorella, is a lack of “bite,” inadequate “stiffness” when it matters. Tortorella expects more ferocity from his charges, shot-blocking included, and it will include the Sedins, who Tortorella said would play on the penalty kill, which Gillis later adjusted to the “thirdline” penalty kill. The Canucks now will play grinding, playofflike hockey all year long, though all involved insist that that does not mean sacrificing offence for defence. To endure the grind of 82 regular-season games, plus the playoffs, plus the Sochi Olympics for the Sedins, Kesler and probably Tortorella, there will be rest days, and easier and fewer practices. “It doesn’t matter if you have a type that comes in that yells and screams,” Henrik said. “It has to make sense. As a player, you have to sit there, and say, ‘Well, he’s right, this is the way it should be.’ There’s nothing wrong with doing that.” Source: Globe and Mail

• Time is money so please be punctual when attending the events. • When food is being served, please be patient when waiting for your turn. Take the food as per your need.
