US BIN LADEN RAID WAS ACT OF WAR, REPORT SAYS The unilateral decision by the US to launch a military operation to capture or kill Osama Bin Laden on Pakistani territory constituted
“an act of war”, a Pakistani government investigation has found. The report of the Abbottabad Commission, which investigated the circumstances around the raid and how the al-Qaeda leader came to live in the country for nine years without apparently being detected, was exclusively released by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit on Monday. The report of the commission, formed in June 2011 to probe the circumstances around the killing of bin Laden by US forces in a

unilateral raid on the Pakistani city of Abbottabad, had earlier been suppressed by the Pakistani government. The raid illustrated Washington’s “contemptuous disregard of Pakistan’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity in the arrogant certainty of […] unmatched military might”, the report concluded in its “Findings” section. In the same section, the report also details the “comprehensive failure of Pakistan to detect the presence of Bin Laden on its territory for almost a decade”. The report draws on testimony from more than 200 witnesses, including members of Bin Laden’s family, Pakistan’s then spy chief, senior ministers in the government and officials at every level of the military, bureaucracy and security services. The commission’s 336-page report is scathing, holding both the government and the military responsible for “gross incompetence” leading to “collective failures” that allowed both Bin Laden to escape detection, and the US to be able to violate Pakistani sovereignty by carrying out an attack on its soil without the knowledge of the military or the government. It singles out the military for particular criticism on this front, citing an “overall policy bankruptcy”

The Alberta floods are Canada’s Hurricane Sandy moment, and should be a catalyst for badly needed changes to limit future damage from extreme weather, say experts on climate change adaptation. “In many cases, the standards for where and how we build are completely out of date with a climatically changed future,” said Ian Mauro, Canada Research Chair in human dimension and environmental change at Mount Allison University. The Alberta floods, he said, should be a wake-up call that “we need to seriously rethink how we build structures, where we build structures and how we manage in emergency situations.” Not only do cities and towns need to stop building in flood-prone areas, but infrastructure such as bridges need to be reassessed with extreme weather events in mind. The failing railway bridge over Calgary’s Bow River underlined the catastrophic potential of doing nothing, said Mauro. “This is just the beginning,” he said. “this isn’t fearmongering, this is a call to action to inspire people to build resilient communities to be able to deal
with impending superstorms of the future.” Water, is considered the new fire — it now
accounts for more property damage every year in Canada than from fire. But, while many building and zoning regulations were historically developed to lessen the risk of fire, the response to water damage has been inconsistent and weak. Many Canadian cities and towns, for example, don’t even have up-to-date floodplain maps, basic information they need to understand flood risks, says the chair of the Climate Change

President’s security officer among 4 killed in Karachi blast
KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari’s chief security officer, Bilal Sheikh and three others (Sheikh’s driver, fruit vendor and a policeman) were killed in a suicide blast targeting his double cabin vehicle near the Binoria Town Mosque in the Gurumandir area of the city on Wednesday. At least 12 people including seven policemen were also injured in the blast. Four of the injured are said to be in critical condition. SSP CID Raja Umar Khattab said the blast was a suicide attack. Khitab further said that the attacker had followed
Sheikh’s vehicle and detonated his explosive vest when the car stopped near a street side fruit vendor. According to reports, Sheikh was getting off his vehicle when the blast took place. According to the bomb disposal squad, the bomb was packed with ball bearings and contained 6 kilograms of explosives. The president has condemned the killing of Sheikh and three other individuals. Aseefa Bhutto Zardari tweeted from her twitter account @AseefaBZ: “RIP Bilal Sheikh Chief Security officer of Bilawal House. He worked personally with my father and siblings to ensure our safety.” The blast was also condemned by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and MQM chief Altaf Hussain who offered his condolences to President Zardari during a telephone call. The PPP has announced to observe a day of mourning across Sindh on Thursday. Businesses and public transport will remain open throughout the province. It may be recalled that Sheikh had been attacked in May 2011 in the Gulbahar area of Karachi. Sheikh had escaped unhurt in the attack; however two of his bodyguards were injured. The slain PPP leader had also told the media in the same year that he had been receiving life threats.

Like predecessor, present govt seems unlikely to bring back criminals: CJ
Islamabad: Chief Justice (CJ) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Wednesday observed that the present government was like the previous government and perhaps did not want to bring back the criminals. He remarked that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had failed to deliver in the National Insurance Company Ltd (NICL) scam, as it has not yet apprehended Mohsin Warriach, who managed to flee the country.A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by the CJ, was hearing the suo moto case on violation of Public Procurement Rules 2004 resulting in the loss of billions of rupees to the public exchequer
caused by the NICL. The court directed the government to fix priorities as to how to proceed for the disposal of the NICL corruption case at the earliest. Appearing on notice, Additional Attorney General (AAG) Shah Khawar apprised the court that he had gone through the report and relevant orders of the courts. The CJ asked him to dosomething tangible in the instant matter and inquired what action had been taken by the concerned authorities to recover the looted money of Rs45 million through the scam. FIA Director Legal Azim Khan told the bench that two high courts had barred the agency from further investigation in the matter. The CJ admonished him and said why the FIA had not filed an appeal against the verdicts of high courts, adding that current matter was under adjudication in the apex court since 2011. The court asked FIA Punjab Director Zone Qudratullah as to what action was taken to recover the looted money. Qudratullah submitted that property of the accused persons was attached.Justice Ijaz Chaudhry, another member of the bench, told Shah Khawar that if he was expecting any progress from a director in the case, it would not be possible.Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed also asked Shah Khawar to make it possible that interruption in the investigation of the matter could be stopped. Later, the court adjourned the hearing till July 25. Source: The News

Egypt interim leader offers Brotherhood roles The Muslim Brotherhood and the Islamist Nour Party will be offered ministerial positions in the transitional government, officials have said, hours after the appointment of a new prime minister. Hazem el-Beblawi, a liberal economist and former finance minister, was named the new prime minister, the presidential spokesman, Ahmed al-Muslimani, said. Liberal opposition chief and Nobel Peace laureate Mohamed ElBaradei was named vice president for foreign relations, Muslimani said on Tuesday. The appointments were followed by an announcement that ministerial posts in the new government would be offered to members of the Freedom and Justice Party, the Muslim Brotherhood’s political arm, and to the hardline Islamist Nour Party. State media quoted a presidential spokesman as saying: “There is no objection at all to including members of those two parties in the government.” The administration moves come almost a week after the military overthrew Islamist president Mohamed Morsi and chose chief justice Adly Mansour to head the Arab world’s most populous country. ElBaradei was initially tipped to lead the cabinet
but his nomination was rejected by the Nour party. Beblawi now faces the daunting task of trying to reunite a deeply divided country and rescue its battered economy. The head of the party added that it was still studying ElBaradei’s appointment. The Muslim Brotherhood, meanwhile, is refusing to recognise the caretaker president or any of his decisions. Shortly after the Islamist parties made their statements, Egypt’s army chief went on state media to say that the military will not accept political “maneuvering”. Defense Minister Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi said that “the future of the nation is too important and sacred for maneuvers or hindrance, whatever the justifications”. The blueprint unveiled by Mansour is intended to replace the controversial Islamistdrafted constitution which he suspended following last week’s coup. A committee will be set up to make final improvements to the draft before it is put to a referendum. Parliamentary elections will then follow within three months and Mansour will announce a date for a presidential election once the new parliament has convened. Both Beblawi and ElBaradei are well-known on Egypt’s political scene. Be-
blawi, 76, studied in Cairo and Paris, where he obtained a doctorate in economics. During his long career, he worked in public and private institutions, both at home and abroad, including as head of Egypt’s Export Development Bank between 1983 and 1995. He has also taught at several universities around the world and has written numerous books and articles on finance in Arabic, French and English. Beblawi was appointed as deputy prime minister and finance minister in the “Revolution Cabinet” after a popular uprising saw the ouster of long-time President Hosni Mubarak. Egypt’s military council rejected the Beblawi’s resignation in October of 2011, when he quit in protest over deadly clashes that left at least 26 people dead. ElBaradei, who has the backing of the June 30 Front - an amalgam of several groups opposing Morsi - is widely respected in Egypt and has received the country’s highest honour,
Toronto begins flood aftermath cleanup, braces for more bad weather
As Toronto residents began the complicated task of mopping up from record rainfalls that stranded commuters, flooded basements and, at its worst, left 500,000 households in the dark, the
city braced for more bad weather and took stock of a storm that early estimates say inflicted more than $600-million in damages. Mayor Rob Ford warned the city’s power system was “hanging by a thread,” Tuesday, urging residents who were lucky enough to have power to curb consumption. When that warning wasn’t enough, the city’s power agency began a series of rolling blackouts in the west end that were expected to continue through the night. By evening rush hour Tuesday – a full day after 136 millimetres of rain pounded the hardest hit areas in the city’s west end – the city was coping, but things were hardly back to normal. Service disruptions continued on commuter rail lines and the subway. Toronto Hydro said 70,000 customers remained without power and officials were making no promises about when full service would be restored. Late Tuesday the Toronto Transit Commission said the subway would remained closed for the morning rush hour west of Jane station. Shuttle buses will be in operation. Toronto Hydro reported 43,000 without power late Tuesday night - 23,000 from rolling blackouts and 20,000 without power since Monday. At one hospital – Etobicoke’s Queensway Health Centre – employees struggled to keep convalescing patients comfortable as the hospital ran on electricity from a backup generator and operations were postponed through Wednesday. The main culprit for much of the continued disruption was two large power stations in the west end that were heavily damaged, one soaked with 300,000 gallons of water according to Carmine
Marcello, the CEO of Hydro One. Mr. Ford, who went to his car with his wife and children when his own home lost power, is asking the city to review its emergency response after Monday’s flooding. “There are many things that worked well last night,” Mr. Ford said, suggesting improvements could be made to the way information is communicated. “Basements were flooding, people were panicking, their hydro wasn’t coming on, people needed answers,” he said. “It was hard to get answers because it was a little chaotic.” City manager Joe Pennachetti was more upbeat in his assessment. “The city is up and running,” he said Tuesday morning as evidence that for the most part emergency crews did their work. “From our viewpoint it went very well, but as the mayor said there is always room for improvement.” While it is too soon to put a price on the damage, Peter Karageorgos of the Insurance Bureau of Canada estimated it will likely exceed the $600-million hit from the city’s last major storm in 2005. With about 1,000 basements flooded and major highways and underpasses under water for hours, some, such as Councillor Paula Fletcher, wondered whether Monday’s storm was evidence that Toronto’s aging infrastructure is not keeping up with the city’s growth, particularly condo towers. Managers for both the city’s roads and water system said the difficulties were created by the sheer volume of water that hit the downtown and western portions of the city. Tuesday afternoon Environment Canada issued a special weather statement saying a low-pressure trough crossing southern Ontario could cause thunderstorms, torrential downpours, damaging winds and large hail. Mr. Marcello of Hydro One said the two affected power stations are a critical source of power for up to half a million customers in Mississauga, Vaughan, Brampton and Toronto. Getting them dry and back in full operation, he said, is a daunting task. The TTC, which at one point Monday had six trains trapped in tunnels when the power went out, also continued its cleanup, with CEO Andy Byford pledging to work through the night. Death toll hits 15 in Lac-Mégantic as criminal probe launched Two more bodies have been recovered in Lac-Mégantic, bringing the death toll to 15 after a derailment a series of resulting explosions destroyed more than 30 buildings in the heart of the small town in Quebec’s Eastern Townships. Quebec provincial police Insp. Michel Forget said a criminal investigation is now underway as officers continue to comb through the rubble and search for some 40 people who are missing. Forget didn’t provide much information on why a criminal investigation was warranted, but did say that investigators had “discovered elements” that supported such a probe. Forget said officials don’t think that the incident was caused by terrorism. He said criminal negligence was one possible avenue that officials are considering as the investigation unfolds. Police have cordoned off a “red zone” around the derailment site as some 200 officers go through the rubble and seek out bodies of the missing. The national Transportation Safety Board is also investigating. On Tuesday, officials from Transport Canada said the train involved in the fatal derailment was inspected the day before the incident. Questions have been raised about how the train was able to roll away, outof-control, after the engineer parked it at the end of his shift on Friday night. Transport Canada officials would not comment on specifics of the case, but said handbrakes should always be tested using a “push-pull” test to make sure the train cannot move. On Tuesday, officials released further details on the timeline of events that led to the Lac-Mégantic tragedy. The investigators said firefighters had responded to an incident at the train in the town of Nantes, about seven kilometres uphill from Lac-Mégantic, about an hour after it had been parked for the night by the operator. The locomotive engine was shut off at that time. After firefighters and a rail company employee left the scene, the train rolled down the hill and derailed, before several of the cars carrying crude oil exploded. The train was travelling at a rate of speed far above the approved limit when its cars left the tracks, investigators said. Because this stretch of track is not monitored by signals, officials said rail authorities had no indication of the runaway train before the derailment. Meanwhile, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada is raising questions about the type of “general purpose” tanker car routinely used to haul flammable materials like crude oil. “This area is not equipped with the type of signal systems that would even show to a rail traffic controller that something was moving on the territory that they hadn’t authorized,” said Don Ross, the TSB’s lead investigator at the scene in Lac-Mégantic, on Tuesday. Another investigator with the TSB said the type of train car involved in the crash was also involved in an incident in Gouin, Que., several years ago. He said safety officials identified the car as a concern after the 1995 derailment resulted in a sulphuric acid leak. Investigators said they are in the first phase of a “long process” of finding out exactly what happened in the hours and minutes leading up to the deadly explosions. Source: CBC News

Syria rebels made own sarin gas, says Russia
Russia has presented evidence to the UN it says shows Syrian rebels attacked regime forces with sarin gas that was produced in “cottage industry” conditions. Ambas-
sador Vitaly Churkin said Russian experts had been to the scene of the attack at Khan al-Assal near Aleppo and gathered firsthand evidence. Churkin said the attack killed 26 people, including 16 military personnel, and injured 86 others. Rebels have blamed government forces for the attack. The samples taken from the impact site of the gasladen projectile were analysed at a Russian laboratory certified by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Churkin said. He said the analysis showed that the unguided Basha’ir-3 rocket that hit Khan al-Assal was not a military-standard chemical weapon. He said the samples indicated the sarin and the projectile were produced in makeshift “cottage industry” conditions, and the projectile was “not a
standard one for chemical use”. He added that, according to information gathered by Russia, production of the projectiles started in February by the “Basha’ir al-Nasr’ brigade”, which is affiliated with the Free Syrian Army. The Russian action risks reigniting an international dispute over the use of chemical weapons in the 26-month-old war, in which the United Nations says up to 100,000 people have been killed. The United States has rejected Russian claims raised at the United Nations that Syrian opposition fighters had used chemical weapons. “We have yet to see any evidence that backs up the assertion that anybody besides the Syrian government has the ability to use chemical weapons, [or] has used chemical weapons,” White House spokesman Jay Carney
said on Tuesday. The Syrian government has refused to let a UN inspection team into the country, but this week invited UN officials for talks on the investigation. Carney again called on the Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad, to allow foreign investigators to probe claims of chemical weapons use. “The way to answer this question is to allow the United Nations to investigate,” he said. “Our ability as an international community to investigate the use of chemical weapons in Syria is hampered by Assad’s refusal to allow a United Nations investigation.” Britain, France and the United States say they have handed over evidence to UN experts indicating that Assad’s forces have used chemical weapons in the conflict. Taliban shuts Doha HQ over ‘broken promises’ The Taliban has temporarily closed its office in Qatar, where it was hoped peace talks would begin with the US and Afghanistan, an insurgent official said on Tuesday, blaming “broken promises”. The office opened on June 18 as the first move towards a possible peace deal after 12-years of fighting, but it enraged Afghan President Hamid Karzai by styling itself as an unofficial embassy for a government-in-exile. “We have temporarily closed the Qatar office due to broken promises,” a Pakistan-based Taliban official, said on Tuesday. “We are not happy with the Americans, the Kabul government and all parties who have not been honest with us,” he said. Karzai broke off bilat-
eral talks with the Americans and threatened to boycott any peace process altogether after the Taliban opened the offices with a flagraising ceremony for the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan” - the name of the country under Taliban rule. The US State Department said that the closure of the office should not disrupt what it called a “challenging process”. “We believe that misunderstandings that arose in the context of the opening [of the office] should not stand in the way of moving forward on reconciliation if the Taliban wishes to do so,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said. “We’ll continue to support and reiterate our call for that process to move forward.” The lat-
est setback came as Afghan officials said a Taliban-planted bomb in the western province of Herat killed 17 civilians, and an Afghan soldier shot dead a Slovakian soldier at Kandahar airfield. The New York Times also reported that the US was seriously considering speeding up the withdrawal of its forces because of frustration with Karzai. The US President, Barack Obama, is committed to ending the US military involvement in Afghanistan by the end of 2014, though his administration has been negotiating with Kabul about leaving behind a “residual force”. “There has always been a zero option, but it was not seen as the main option,” one senior Western official in Kabul told the
newspaper. “It is now becoming one of them.” The roadside bomb in Herat killed 12 women, four children and one man travelling in a three-wheel minivan, officials said, adding that at least seven other passengers were wounded.
The Slovakian government confirmed that one Slovak soldier was killed and six were injured on Tuesday when an Afghan soldier opened fire in the latest “insider attack” to shake the NATO coalition. Source: Al-Jazeera
Half of UK mosques attacked since 9/11 Around half of mosques and Muslim centres in Britain have been subjected to Islamophobic attacks since 9/11, academics have warned as the far-right English Defence League prepares to march to the southLondon scene of Drummer Lee Rigby’s murder. The figures are highlighted in a report which also found that the number of antiIslamic attacks increased by as much as tenfold in the days following the Woolwich attack. Meanwhile, research by The Independent shows Islamophobic attacks spreading across Britain, with mosques being set alight and Muslims targeted at home in the past month. Despite the warning signs, a senior government adviser told The Independent that there remains a “lack of political will” to take on the rise of Islamophobic attacks in Britain. The adviser, who did not want to be named, said that attempts to “tackle this issue – even before Woolwich – struggled to attract buy-in,” with the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles, identified as the primary source of frustration. The Muslim com-
munity was warned of the dangers it faces from hate groups in a sermon delivered at 500 mosques. The piece said that highprofile cases of sexual grooming of children by small groups of Muslim men “hitting the headlines in a short space of time and the fallout from the Woolwich case will create a major challenge for the Muslim community”. The trial date for the two men accused of murdering Drummer Rigby, Michael Adebolajo, 28, and Michael Adebowale, 22, will begin on 18 November. Professor Nigel Copsey, of Teesside University, the author of the new report which showed that between 40 and 60 per cent of mosques and other Islamic centres (around 700) had been targeted since 9/11 – said: “There has undoubtedly been a spike in anti-Muslim incidents since the Woolwich murder. An obvious concern now is whether the number of hate crime incidents return to ‘normal’ levels or whether Woolwich has been a game-changer in terms of increasing the underlying incidence of anti-Muslim hate over the longer term.” His report is based largely on figures from the Islamophobia watchdog Tell Mama. It shows an increase of attacks to nearly nine per day in the im-
mediate aftermath of the Woolwich killing, but settling back to around two per day over in the following weeks. Prof- essor Copsey added: “What is significant about our analysis is the extent to which the far right is implicated in anti-Muslim hate crime.” Just this week, swastikas and the letters “EDL”, “KKK” and “NF” were sprayed on the walls of a mosque in Redditch. There were also reports of pigs’ heads being left at Muslim families’ homes and other attacks against individuals. There was also a attack
on an Islamic centre in north London. But Dr Matthew Goodwin, associate fellow at Chatham House and an expert on extremist groups, said that “the broader picture is more positive than we think. Young people are more at ease accepting Muslims in society.” A spokesman for the Department for Communities and Local Government said: “There is no place for anti-Muslim hatred or any kind of hatred in Britain, and we are committed to tackling this unacceptable scourge.”Source: The Nation
BC : Continued from pg 1 Adaptation Project Canada. Blair Feltmate, an associate professor of environment and business at the University of Waterloo, said there is an urgent need for new floodplain maps across Canada as a starting point. “We are having more extreme weather than we’ve had historically and we have to know what will be the manifestation in terms of flooding and where the water will go. We need to know where we should build and where we should not build and we should not be building in areas where there is a high probability of flooding.” The dangers of building in flood prone areas also need to be taken more seriously, he said. They are either poorly understood or cavalierly ignored in many parts of the country. “Municipalities have put more homes in places where there should not be homes. We can’t continue to do that.” In some cases, he said, construction is allowed in flood prone areas because property owners and officials don’t believe there is any real danger. “We have management by disaster. In the absence of disaster, we assume disaster will not oc-
cur.” Not only have many municipalities, including Calgary, allowed building in flood prone areas, but it is often premium property because of its proximity to water. There are examples of municipalities that have bought buildings and changed zoning rules to keep infrastructure away from water, but those are rare. Bruce Reid of the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority said a federal-provincial program to update flood plane maps has not been funded for years. The authority has managed to update many of its flood estimates, he said, even though some of the maps are out of date. Some of the push to update infrastructure and policies to adapt to a changing climate is coming from the insurance industry. Impact Financial, which funds the University of Waterloo-based Climate Change Action Project, is paying for the construction of bioswales — landscaped storm water drains — in cities across Canada as demonstration projects in the hopes that governments will build more if they work. Ramadan, Excellent Source for Taqwa & overall Health
Canadian Muslims are excited, as the blessed month of Ramadan has already begun to give them another golden chance for self-evaluation and spiritual growth. Ramadan is also called Ramzan or Ramadhan and is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, which consists of 354 days in 12 months cycle. The month is spent in the hot pursuit of Taqwa by the devout Muslims all around the world for 29 or 30 days every year depending on various factoral limitations. On the (lunar) Islamic calendar, Ramadan is always on the same date; however, the date on the (solar) Gregorian calendar varies from year to year. The month moves in the Gregorian calendar approximately 11 days annually. Since the Islamic calendar is lunar, and the days begin at sunset, so there is a slight chance of one-day in counting error depending on when the new moon is first sighted. Fasting during the month is one of the five pillars of Islam and is known to be month of reflection and complete submission to Allah SWT (God Almighty). The majority of the Muslim Ummah agrees that fasting in the month is an essential part of fundamental Islamic obligations. The beginning and ending of the month may vary from country to country depending on the moon sighting. Islamically, fasting (sawm) is abstaining or refraining from certain things for a specified period of time. For example: While fasting, a Muslim is required to abstain from sexual intercourse, food and drinks of all kinds right from dawn to sunset time preceded by the intention (Niyyah).
But one must remember that sins under no circumstance are justifiable regardless of fasting or not. Dawn to dusk fasting starts before Fajar (Sunrise) and ends at Maghreb (Sunset) when “Iftar” (breaking fast) is mandatory. Almost all masaajid (mosques) host daily Iftar during Ramadan where Muslims can break their fast and eat together. Exemption: The young children, the sick and the elderly are exempted from fasting. Realising the pain of starvation: The Ramadhan fasting enables the Muslims to broaden their compassion for “the Hungry” and “the less fortunate.” That is why; the Muslims tend to generously donate to charity. It’s pleasing to know that hyper-participation in food drives for the poor during the month is quite usual, as Muslims are motivated to give out for the needy and hungry for the entire year. And in Masaajid, the Qur’an is recited by the Imam during congregational taravi prayers every night throughout the blessed month. Essence of fasting during Ramadan and its goal is summed up in the Qur’an just in one word: “Taqwa””O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may attain Taqwa.” (Qur’an 2:183). Taqwa is both an attitude and a process. In fact, the proper attitude of the Muslims toward Allah SWT denotes nothing but love, devotion, and fear. This clearly indicates that Ramadanfasting like other religious practices in Islam is one of the best sources available to generate moral excellence to appropriately handle the daily routine matters including so-
cial interaction. Beyond doubt, one can achieve the best moral values and can easily become a role model for others provided there is no hypocrisy or double standards. If we are sincere towards Allah SWT, fasting in Ramadan helps us to develop our moral discipline, which also reminds us of the plight of those have-nots who suffer from constant hunger and deprivation. With all said, it boils down to the fact that “Fasting” is not simply a time during which people deprive themselves from physical pleasures, but it’s also an important occasion to practise moral self restraint for attaining the spiritual growth. Indeed, the sense of spiritual fulfillment through a state of “TAQWA” becomes attainable with month long “Fasting Work-Out” during the blessed month, because the first verses of the holy Quran were actually revealed to our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Ramadhan. And, “Laaelatul-Qadr” is remembered as being the anniversary of that actual day, when the Quran was actually presented to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Furthermore, the “Laaelatul-Qadr” is known as the “Night of Power” which usually falls on any odd dated night within the last 10 days of Ramadan. As sawm in Arabic means “Refrain,” so Ramadan provides the best opportunity to learn that there is a lot more than just the ‘disallowed eating or drinking’ between the Sunrise and the Sunset. Fortunately, the blessed month empowers the Muslims to be brave enough to restrain themselves from devilish or sinful activity including backbiting, gossiping, looking im-
morally at forbidden things and using obscene words. Thus, taking part in the mandatory practice of Ramadan fasting through offering the prayers on time, eating and drinking as prescribed makes the Muslims well disciplined and Muttaqee (God fearing). Among the health benefits of Ramadhan fasting, is the relaxation period for stomach, digestive system, refining system, heart, circulatory system, the kidneys and the list goes on and on. As claimed by medical scientists and doctors, Islamic Fast is also a kind of psychological treatment, because it provides spiritual enhancement and strengthens the feeling of being free from physical limitations and habits and addictions. Since the blessed month make Muslims feel morally re-conditioned and rebooted, they must maintain the momentum of carrying out their self-check up through increased religious dedication 24/7 during the entire remainder of the year till next Ramadan. As self-discipline, patience and spirituality are the great fruits of fasting work out, surely, Ramadan helps grow the remembrance of Allah SWT leading to another renewal of solid commitment to the noble values that God Almighty has revealed to the Muslims and the entire Humankind, of course. Nevertheless, without sincere effort, benefits derived from fasting are short lived. In fact, Islamic Fast, which plays an important role in the treatment of some diseases, can be very effective if it is practiced according to the Sunna of Prophet Muhammad
Letters & Opinions
‘Happy Ramadaan’!
By: Gulshan Aalani One of the most important sacred and blessed month of Ramadaan in which the last closing ‘Testament’ the Divine Revelation was revealed (14c. ago) to ProphetMessenger Muhammad(saw) through Angel Gabriel in the specific night called Lailat-ul Qadr known as night of Power and destiny, which falls among the odd nights of the last ten nights: 21-29. One cannot pick and choose to establish one of these nights as special night, since Allah-Creator-GOD is the legislator and has already established the ‘Law’, the legislated Blue print that is pure, perfect, accurate, free from contradictions and beneficial for mankind. Every single ‘Divine law’ is beneficial for the good health, clean and purity of mind, body and soul. HIS law cannot be violated nor be tempered with HIS system, which would give a free ride to the evil spirit to take over human minds. Fasting in the month of Ramadaan is prescribed by GOD and is one
of the 5 major commandments of Islam (Quran 2:183, 185). Fasting was prescribed to mankind in the early monotheist religions and is known to mankind since ancient times. If one does not accept the Creator-GOD, and HIS commandments one cannot fully understand or comprehend the meaning of Divine Revelation and its obedience. Fasting without 5 times Salat/ prayers and the Prostration to the Creator is like building a feather house, which would blow up with one light blow of wind. (Q. 47:1). “Those who reject GOD and hinder men from the path of GOD, their deeds will GOD render astray”. Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) said: “Keep up with the 5 times Salat/ Namaz and while fasting one ought to do more good works than usual and ardently desire to perform acts of kindness, compassion and sympathy towards less fortunate, feed the hungry and make sure your neighbor has his fill first before you put food in your mouth: oppression is forbidden to you (oppression is worst than a
slaughter), take care of your wives, they are your garments and partners, Allah has forbidden you ‘Riba’(Usury), follow the criterion/Furqan from the Quran and obtain a great reward by freeing the slaves”. Thus, the Al-Quran is the continuation of the previous Holy Scriptures from GOD, the eternal guide and the criterion for mankind to follow, which completes the BOOK OF REVELATION. There will be no more Messages or the Messengers for mankind as Prophet Muhammad (saw) was the last Messenger and a ‘Seal’ of Prophets whose advent was foretold by Prophet Jesus (AS) the son of H. Mary (RA), and he will ‘Return’ as a Just ruler and to establish GOD’S law and Justice, whose advent is also foretold by the Prophet Muhammad (saw) in his Gospel/Hadith. Mankind needs to be GOD conscious, worship HIM only and desisting from violating HIS law, and terrorizing others by misinterpreting HIS Messages. To understand the Divine law is as easy as understanding the law of the
Land. God’s order of capturing the infidels-criminals is for the authority the rulers of the land, Muslim or non-Muslims and not for the individuals who misinterpret to serve their evil desires to blow up others. Believing in GOD means to worship HIM only, desisting from violating HIS law, pursuing activities that pleases HIM and refraining from the unlawful acts and desires, and doing nothing contrary to HIS commandments. When afflicted with calamity say: “To GOD we belong, and to HIM is our return, they are those on whom descend blessings and Mercy from GOD, and they are the ones that receive guidance”. (Q. 2: 156,157). May Allah-CreatorGOD bless HIS followers.

(PBUH). Conclusion is Islamic fasting during Ramadan or otherwise definitely helps in ridding our bodies of stored poisons, including addictive substances, and we feel enabled to adjust our craving and upgrade our tolerance level. Most of all, one’s mind becomes purely clean and clear of all lustful thoughts after attaining Taqwa. Waan laysa lil insani illa ma’ sa’aa That man can have nothing but what he strives for.

Ramadan 3, 1434 H July 12, 2013
F A I T H
Blessed is the holy month of Ramadan Allah Most High says: “Every action of the son of Adam belongs to him except the fast. It is Mine, and I repay him for it.” (Muslim) There can be neither false pretension nor showing off on the part of the one who is fasting. If one is offering prayers, giving zakah, making pilgrimage or any other form of worship, others can see one’s worship but fasting is distinguished by the fact that only Allah Most High can see who is fasting and who is not. The polytheists may perform various acts of worship for their false gods to please them. They may make vows to them, make tawaf around them, travel for them and fight in their names.
However, they do not fast for them nor has it ever been recorded that they fasted for them. Indeed it is clear that the fast of Islam is the fast of the Truth. Hafiz Al-Asqalani, quoting from Imam Al-Qurtubi, mentions the following Hadith: “The bank-
rupt person is he who shall come on the Day of Judgment with prayer, charity and fast, but he had also swore at another person, beat another, and consumed the wealth of another. His good deeds will be taken from him, and the other person will take his good deeds. And when his
good deeds are no more, before what is due upon him has been paid, he takes from their bad deeds. They will be thrown at him. Then he will be flung into the Fire. He continues to say that there is a narration from by Abu Hurayrah, in which Allah Most High says: All actions are atonement, except for fasting. Fasting is for Me and I reward it. (Fath Al-Bari, by Hafiz Al-Asqalani, Book of Fasting) It can be concluded that Allah Most High loves the fast of a Muslim, as it is a means for him to become more aware and fearful of Allah Most High. May Allah bless everyone with peace and happiness in this Ramadan
THE month of Ramadan is a month of grace and blessing. Upon arrival of this blessed month, Allah Most High causes His blessings and forgiveness to descend upon the one who gives this month its rights. Ramadan is the month in which Allah Most High showers His blessings upon our homes, and upon those who enter the mosques, especially the House of Allah — the Kaaba. During Ramadan, the mercy of Allah Most High falls upon us, like rain falling from the clouds. One can liken the virtue of Ramadan with charity, which is of two kinds. The first kind is where one gives charity to someone whom one meets along the street or on the path. The second kind is likened to one who visits another with the intention of giving charity. Ramadan is likened to the latter; where Allah Most High causes His blessings to descend upon the ummah of the blessed Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is during this time, that even little effort has the ability to earn high rewards, no matter where one is, be it in the sacred precinct in Makkah, or in one’s home. Allah Almighty is the creator of all things. He created the year, the month, the day and the hour. In the same way, Allah Most High has elevated the status of the Prophet (peace be upon him) over the whole of creation; and the status of the Kaaba over all the other places of worship, He has elevated and raised the month of Ramadan over all other months. This is entirely the will of Allah Most High, and a manifestation of His Omnipotent Power and Divine Will. Allah Most High chose to reveal His uncreated speech, the Qur’an, in this blessed month, to His final and most beloved Prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him). Allah Most High says in the Qur’an: “The month of Ramadan is the month in which the Qur’an was sent down, a guidance for the people, and clear verses of guidance and a criterion.” (Qur’an, 2:185) Imam Al-Tabari writes that Wathilah (may Allah bless him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The Scrolls of Abraham were revealed on the first night of the month of Ramadan, the Torah was revealed on the sixth of Ramadan, the Bible on the 13th, and the Qur’an was revealed on the 24th of Ramadan. He also writes that Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) said: Allah caused the Qur’an to descend to the heaven of this world, on Laylat AlQadr, and then when Allah wished to reveal anything from it, He revealed it. And that is what is meant by His Words: “Verily We have revealed the Qur’an in Laylat Al-Qadr” (Tafsir AlTabari, by Imam Al-Tabari, surat AlQadr) Allah Most High says in the Qur’an: “O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you as it has been prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain unto piety.” (Qur’an, 2:183) Imam Al-Tabari writes that Qatadah (Allah be pleased with him) said, in reference to this ayah: “The month of Ramadan has been prescribed for the people as it was prescribed for those before them. Allah has prescribed the fast of three days of each month, before revealing the fast of Ramadan.” (Tafsir Al-Tabari, by Imam AlTabari, Surat Al-Qadr) Fasting during the month of Ramadan is obligatory and is done solely for Allah Most High. In a Hadith Qudsi,

Canada Day Celebrated at Burnaby Mosque &Islamic Centre For the 5th consecutive year, the BC Muslim Association hosted the annual Canada Day community celebration at the Al-Salaam Mosque in Burnaby. The event featured the largest Canadian flag in the city which measured 20 by 40 feet and draped over the East Wall of Al-Salaam Mosque and Islamic Centre. The event is popular with the general public and people of various faiths as the mosque is located directly across the street from the Burnaby Village Museum which hosts
a well-attended Canada Day party. Many visitors walked over from the museum to the mosque where they enjoyed delicious food and barbecue, refreshments, displays on Provinces in Canada, and tours of the facility which includes a prayer space, a library and a traditional Islamic Minaret. Children enjoyed many activities including bouncy castles, magicians, face painting and balloon animals. This year, the event attracted hundreds of visitors. The BCMA Burnaby women
chapter, all directors and youth wing made this event very successful. Many political and other dignitaries were present there and celebrated the Canada Day with the Muslim community included Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan, MLA Raj Chouhan, Burnaby-Edmonds and city councillors. 146th Canada Day Celebrated by Pakistani Canadian Cultural Association
On July 1, many Pakistani Canadians gathered at Crescent Park in South Surrey. They had been invited by the Pakistani Canadian Cultural Association (PCCA) to celebrate 146th Canada Day. Dignitaries including NDP MP Jinny Sims, Jasbir Sandhu and NDP MLAs Sue Hammell, Harry Bains, Bruce Ralston and past MLA Jagrup Brar joined the crowd and cut a large cake honoring Canada Day. A large number of Pakistani families came with their contributions to pot luck picnic table,
filling it with a large variety of delicious food, fruits, sweets, and drinks. Meanwhile the park was filled with the pleasant smell of delicious BBQ being prepared by PCCA volunteers for hours. President of PCCA Mr. Naveed Waraich, Senior Vice President Mr. Talib Hussain, Media Director Mr. Ifthikar Ghuman, General Secretary Mr. Tanvir Chaudhry many other directors of PCCA did a great efforts and made success. Some directors showed their perfection in Siz-
zling Chicken Tikkas on the grill with other fellows for all. After lunch, men, women and children enjoyed many games included cricket, musical chairs, tug of war and sack race. Everyone also got a chance to enjoy Pakistani Music and take part in a Quiz while the kids playing in the Children’s Park. This hugely successful event was a collaborated effort of not just the PCCA Directors but also their families. Everyone fully enjoyed their time at the picnic.
US : Continued from pg 1 amongst both the political and military leadership, when it came to securing the country’s western border against possible violations of Pakistani territory or airspace. The commission’s investigators were told by the Pakistani Air Force that low-level radars were on “peacetime deployment”, and hence were not active on the western border with Afghanistan. It is through this lack of radar coverage, and the fact that the US forces carried out the raid in stealth helicopters, flying fast and low, they were told, that the US SEAL team was able to evade detection. Pakistani Air Force jets were only scrambled in response to the threat after US forces had already left Pakistani airspace, after having spent approximately three hours in Pakistani territory and airspace. It concluded that Pakistan’s defence policy was “outdated” and reactive, with major pol-

icy documents not having been updated since 2004 (the Defence Policy) and 2007 (the Joint Strategic Directive). The two documents designate India as being the only country to be considered “hostile” to Pakistan. “There was no pro-active anticipatory policy or policy planning,” the report says, in detailing how the Pakistani military apparently had no contingency plans in place to respond to a unilateral US raid. It also noted that such a raid had been alluded to in public statements by senior US officials. “Is it official or unofficial defence policy not to attempt to defend the country if threatened or even attacked by a military superpower like the US?” the report asks several top military officials, including the chief of the air force and the director-general of the InterServices Intelligence (ISI). 51 killed in morning prayers bloodbath as Egypt violence worsens THE Muslim Brotherhood called for an uprising in Egypt yesterday, accusing the army of firing on a peaceful sit-in when 51 people were shot dead at morning prayers. Five children were among the dead and 435 people were hurt during protests in Cairo against the removal of president Mohammed Morsi. “They opened fire with live ammunition and lobbed tear gas,” said Al-Shaimaa Younes, who was at the sit-in. “There was panic and people started running. I saw people fall.” The army claimed a “terrorist group” tried to storm the barracks, killing an officer and two policemen. Interim president Adly Mansour appealed for calm and ordered an inquiry into the violence. Egypt’s top Muslim cleric warned of “civil war”. In conflicting accounts of how the violence began, a military spokesman said gunmen attempted to storm the building at dawn, prompting the clashes. Supporters of ousted Morsi, meanwhile, said the security forces fired on hundreds of protesters as they performed early morning prayers. Health Ministry spokesman Khaled elKhatib said initial reports also indicated at least 322 were wounded, although he gave no details on the circumstances of the bloodshed. A medic from the area, Hesham Agami, said ambulances were unable to transport more the hundreds of wounded to hospitals because the military had blocked off roads. The Brotherhood’s official spokesman,
Gehad El-Haddad, said shooting broke out in the early morning while Islamists were praying and staging a peaceful sit-in outside the barracks. Al-Shaimaa Younes, who was at the sitin, said that women and children had been among the demonstrators. “They opened fire with live ammunition and lobbed tear gas,” she said. “There was panic and people started running. I saw people fall.” Contrastingly, Egyptian state TV showed images – provided by the military – of the scene of the sit-in, where scores of protesters were shown pelting troops with rocks, and setting tires on fire, as troops dressed in riot gear and carrying shields formed lines a few meters away. A fire was raging from an apartment in a building overlooking the scene of the clashes, while images showed men throwing spears at the area of the clashes from atop nearby building rooftops. Other protesters were seen lobbing fire bombs at the troops and security officers
were showing cameras bullet casings, and troops carrying injured colleagues. Military spokesman Col. Ahmed Mohammed Ali said initial information indicated that gunmen affiliated with the Brotherhood tried to storm the Republican Guard building shortly after dawn, firing live ammunition and throwing firebombs from a nearby mosque and rooftops. One police officer on the scene was killed, he said. A statement by the armed forces published on the state news agency said “an armed terrorist group” tried to storm the Republican Guard building, killing one officer and seriously wounding six. The statement said the forces arrested 200 attackers, armed with guns and ammunition. However, Ali, the Brotherhood spokesman, dismissed the military’s version, saying the protesters didn’t attack the troops. Morsi supporters have been holding rallies and a sit-in outside the Republican Guard building since the military deposed Morsi last week during massive protests against him. The military chief replaced Morsi with an interim president until presidential elections are held. The transition plan is backed by liberal and secular opponents of Morsi, and had been also supported by the ultraconservative Islamist Al-Nour party and both Muslim and Christian religious leaders. Soon after the attack report, however, AlNour party spokesman Nader Bakkar said on his Twitter account his party is withdrawing its support for the transition plan
in response to the “ma Morsi’s supporters have insisted he be reinstated, and have vowed to continue their sit-ins outside the Republican Guard building as well as at a nearby mosque.
The former leader’s opponents are also holding massive rival rallies. They say the former president lost his legitimacy by mismanaging the country and not ruling democratically, leading to a mass revolt that began June 30 – the first anniversary of Morsi’s assumption of power. Huge crowds numbering hundreds of thousands gathered in different parts of Cairo again on Sunday. The groups were peaceful, but nonetheless served as a reminder of the risks of further instability in Egypt. The scenes of running street battles between pro- and anti-Mursi demonstrators in Cairo, Alexandria and cities across the country have alarmed Egypt’s allies, including key aid donors the United States and Europe, and Israel, with which Egypt has had a U.S.-backed peace treaty since 1979.” http://www.express.co.uk/news

Pak lone female fighter pilot ready for combat Battle Ready Ayesha Farooq (26) in the cockpit of an F-7PG fighter jet at the Mushaf base in Sargodha, Pakistan. With an olive green headscarf poking out from her helmet, Ayesha Farooq flashes a cheeky grin when asked if it is lonely being the only war-ready female fighter pilot in the Islamic republic of Pakistan. Ayesha (26), from Bahawalpur in Punjab province, is one of 19 women who have become pilots in the Pakistan Air Force over the past decade - there are five other female fighter pilots but they have yet to take the final tests to qualify for combat. “I don’t feel any different. We do the same activities, the same precision bombing,” the soft-spoken 26-year-old said of her male col-
leagues at Mushaf base in north Pakistan, where neatly piled warheads sit in sweltering 50 °C heat. A growing number of women have joined Pakistan’s defence forces in recent years as attitudes towards women change. “Because of terrorism and our geographical location it’s very important that we stay on our toes,” says Ayesha, referring to Taliban militancy and a sharp rise in sectarian violence. Deteriorating security in neighbouring Afghanistan, where USled troops are preparing to leave by the end of next year, and an uneasy relationship with arch rival India to the east add to the mix. Ayesha, whose slim frame offers a study in contrast with her burly
male colleagues, was at loggerheads with her widowed and uneducated mother seven years ago when she said she wanted to join the air force. “In our society most girls don’t even think about doing such a thing as flying an aircraft,” she said. Family pressure against the traditionally male domain of the armed forces dissuaded other women from taking the next step to become combat ready, air force officials said. “They fly slower aircraft instead, ferrying troops and equipment around the nuclear-armed country of 180 million. Women are becoming more aware of their rights and signing up with the air force is about as empowering as it gets.
“More and more women are joining now,” says Nasim Abbas, Wing Commander of Squadron 20, made up of 25 pilots, including Ayesha Farooq, who fly Chinese-made F-7PG fighter jets.“It’s seen as less of a taboo. There’s been a shift in the nation’s way of thinking,” Abbas says. There are now around 4,000
women in Pakistan’s armed forces, largely confined to desk jobs and medical work. But over the past decade, women have became sky marshals, defending Pakistan’s commercial liners against insurgent attacks, and a select few are serving in the elite antiterrorist force. — Reuters
A suggested program for the Muslim sister in Ramadan It is observed that during Ramadan, many women passed Ramadan’s days in negligence, shortness and busyness by useless things that will not benefit them in the world and after world, because of that we wanted to plan (put) a daily program. Praise only be to Allah, and peace and blessings be on his last Prophet, and so.It is observed that during Ramadan, many women passed Ramadan’s days in negligence, shortness and busyness by useless things that will not benefit them in the world and after world, because of that we wanted to plan (put) a daily program through it she can spend the time of that precious month: 1- The Muslim woman wakes up before dawn (Fajr) to eat Suhur, according to the Prophet’s -peace and blessings be upon him- order: “Surely, there is a blessing in Suhur” (Agreed on It).
2- Preparing to the Fajr prayer by ablution and waiting for the call to the prayer (Adhan), then praying Al Fajr Sunnah after insuring that the dawn has arouse, as the Prophet -peace and blessings be upon him- never left it neither while traveling nor at home. 3- She must say the supplications (Azkar) after finishing praying as glorification, Cheers, and praising him (Allah). 4- She must stay in her place to the sunshine supplicating God the Almighty, reading Qur’an, and saying the morning’s supplication, then she must pray two rak’as so that she can gain the reward of a complete and perfect Hijj and ‘Umra. 5- Then she takes a break (rest) and sleep in order to regain her power if she isn’t committed to a job or studying, then she awakens before Al Zohr to pray Al Doha prayer and get prepared to Al Zohr prayer.
6- The Fasting woman should have a specific daily part of the Holy Qur’an to be Read during day, night and her spare time, as the Holy Qur’an has a special Privacy in Ramadan, as God says in this verse: “ The month of Ramadan [Is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, guidance for the people and clear Proofs of guidance and criterion.” [Al Baquara 2:185] Transliteration: Shahru Ramađāna Al-Ladhī ‘Unzila Fīhi Al-Qur’ānu Hudáan Lilnnāsi Wa Bayyinātin Mina Al-Hudá Wa AlFurqāni Also reading and listening to the Qur’an in that month is one of the greatest duties and honorable allegiances. The Muslim woman should finish reading the Qur’an at least once in that month. 7- When the calling to pray Al ‘Asr is made, repeat after the caller, then pray it, and don’t forget the supplications after praying.
8- Doing the home duties, as fixing the meals and preparing the family needs with neither exaggeration nor luxury. 9- Assign a time before Al Maghrib (sunset) for the night supplication, because it is a responding time. 10- When the caller calls for Al Maghrib prayer, it is preferred to hasten the breaking of the fast, depending on the Prophet’s -peace be upon him- Hadith: “The people will remain on the right path as long as they hasten the breaking of the Fast”. [Narrated by Al Bukhari] Then praying Al Maghrib prayer at its Time. 11- Getting prepared to Al ‘Isha’ prayer by taking these points into consideration: a) The woman should pray Al Tarawih prayer in her home and this is better, because the Prophet -peace be upon him- said: “Don’t prevent the female servants of Al-

lah from visiting the mosques of Allah, and their homes are better for them” [Narrated by Muslim], but she can pray in the mosque. b) If she went out to pray in the mosque, then she is not allowed to go out wearing perfume, accessories...ect (she should stick to the islamic rules regarding women’s wear) and that is to avoid the bad consequences of such acts. c) She should not mix with men when exiting the mosque after the Taraweeh prayer. 12- Make sure not to stay up too late, The prophet -peace and blessings be upon him- used to hate nightly chats and talks after Aisha’. These are hints that we ask Allah to benefit you with in order to make the best out of this holly month, and peace and blessings be upon our prophet Muhammad and upon all his family and companions

1-2-3 ~ Let’s Paint Kate Middleton again!
By Maheen Nusrat At the beginning of this year, a commissioned portrait of the Duchess of Cambridge was unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery. The unveiling of this much awaited portrait by Paul Emsley led to a lot of negative reaction from the media and art critics-many critics feeling “unimpressed” by this work of Art. They said that it made the Duchess appear “ageing”, eyes that lacked “sparkle” and a face that looked “dour”. Such harsh criticism would generally be a deterrent for any artist to try and paint the Duchess again. That was not the case with a Pakistani-British artist-she finds inspiration in that criticism and decides to paint a portrait of the Duchess herself. Amina Art Ansari is a British born Pakistani artist. Amina is an up and coming artist but is already well-renowned in the British art community. She has already won awards and prizes for her work as a young South Asian female artist in Britain. She painted a tribute to her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh on the Diamond Jubilee which was presented in Parliament. These portraits are now at display at her Majesty’s Windsor Castle collection. Her latest painting of The
Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine Middleton is sure to put her on the map for the mainstream British art community. After Paul Emsley’s much criticized portrait for the National Portrait Gallery, Amina felt inspired and felt an “urge” to try and paint her version of the beautiful Duchess. GoFigurative art gallery immediately picked up this portrait to be put on display at London’s Affordable Art Gallery which was held from June 13th-June 16th at Hampstead Heath. Sally Perry, Co-Founder and Director of Go figurative said: “talented, special artists, skill and passion are at the core of who we choose”. Clearly, Go Figurative recognizes a great artist when they see one. I am not an art critic, but an admirer of talent. Whereas, there is wisdom in the portrait that Emsely painted, Ansari’s depiction of the Duchess is vibrant, bright, and colourful. Amina uses bold red hues on a sophisticated black background to bring out the boldest aspect of her painting-the smile of the Duchess. Through the dark canvass, emerges against all hardships, and adversity, a face of a beautiful, intelligent, selfassured and a content woman. Amina has never met the Duchess herself, but took inspiration
from images in Magazines, news articles and of course utilized her imagination. This portrait is the embodiment of the Duchess as we see in the public, but also of the vibes that Amina has felt about the Duchess. “That is my gift, I feel vibes before I even meet people and often times people are surprised at how well I capture their essence”-says Amina. The portrait is not static, but dynamic. There is movement within the image, and a bright reflection of light falling on the locks of the Duchess against the dark backdrop. All of these only add to the mysteriousness, yet also make the Duchess a real and an approachable personality. The portrait as a whole is stunning, but what captivates your attention is the beautiful smile. The smile shows contentment on a face of a woman who knows her identity and place. The smile is natural, as if Kate was captured in a moment, smiling at perhaps a royal fan and is caught in a state of moving. The beauty is in the details, the way the locks are falling, the light as it hits her beautiful hair, and the smile lines that crease her cheeks. These are all very hard to miss. A true sign of an artist is to take the surface and see beyond that
and bring the soul onto the canvass. Amina has done just that with her tribute to Catherine Middleton. She is a brave and talented artist, who is not afraid to play with colours and fully expose the emotions in a face. The art community would be foolish to ignore her-not that you can ignore her for
long. I had the opportunity to sit down with the talented artist and pick her brain about her work, and her life. She has a great sense of humour and an equally strong personality… Stay tuned for the interview in the next issue!!

Diet during Ramadan By: M. Z. A. Nomani Ramadan fasting can serve as an excellent research model for the study of human metabolism and behavior. One of the earliest published research findings on Ramadan fasting is from East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, reported by Muazzam and Khaleque (1). During the last twenty years there has been growing realization on the part of many scientists for further research in this area. Recently, a Ramadan fasting model has been used for various metabolic studies, Iraki et al (2), Ayabak et al (3), Husain et al. (4), Malik et al (5), El Ati et al (6), Nomani (7), Nomani et al (8), Sweileh et al (9) and Malhotra eta al (10) and for behavior modification, Afifi (11) Farren and Naidoo (12) and Daradkeh (13). High blood cholesterol and uric acid have been considered health risk factors in cardiovascular diseases and gout, respectively. Conflicting results have been reported on the effect of dietary fat on changes in blood cholesterol levels, Gurr et al (14) and Kritchevsky (15). In 1979, Nomani et al (16) hypothesized that there is an increase in blood cholesterol levels with either increasing or decreasing level of energy intake in relation to the requirement. The recent findings of Ramadan fasting research, Nomani (7), Nomani et al (8) and Hallak and Nomani (17), confirm the hypothesis and help in resolving the dilemma of conflicting findings. The dietary regulation of blood cholesterol and uric acid levels are not only useful for Muslims but also for others throughout the world, irrespective of religion, race, color, gender or ethnic group. According to the 1995 dietary guidelines, from the U. S. Department of Agriculture and Department of Health and Human Services (18) - energy from fat should not to be more than 30 percent, a level that is appropriate for the general population; however, this level may be inappropriate during Ramadan fasting or similar restricted energy intake situations. Under restricted energy
intake conditions, such as Ramadan fasting, anorexia nervosa, prolonged weight control dieting and low energy intake conditions in underdeveloped or developing countries, there is a need for reassessment. BLOOD CHOLESTEROL Body weight One of the major problems that contributes to conflicting results on the effect of quantity or quality of dietary fat on blood cholesterol level is a failure to examine the effect of dietary fat in relation to body weight or changes in body weight. There is an increase in blood cholesterol levels with increasing or decreasing weight from normal weight levels. Hallak and Nomani (17) noted increased blood cholesterol level with weight loss during the fasting month of Ramadan. Other investigators also noted increased blood cholesterol level with weight loss, Fedail et al. (19), Shoukry (20) and El Arnaoty and Johnson (21). Among non-Muslim American female subjects there was increase in blood cholesterol level with lowering of the body massindex below 18.5, Nomani et al. (22). During Ramadan, when no significant difference was noticed in blood cholesterol levels, before and after fasting period, there was no significant difference in body weight as well, Maislos, et al (23). Dietary fat and blood cholesterol level Another omitted or insufficiently considered factor is statement of the energy intake in relation to the requirement. Under limited energy intake conditions, several studies on rats and humans, which include Muslims and non-Muslims, have indicated beneficial effects of a high fat-diet. In rats when the energy intake was ~70 percent of the requirement, blood cholesterol level was negatively associated with dietary fat energy, Nomani et al (24). In another study from the same laboratory, Forbes et al (25), found no significant difference in blood cholesterol levels of rats on diet with 40 percent of the total energy intake through fat (corn and coconut oils, 1.4:2) as com-
pared to the group consuming 21 percent fat-energy from corn oil. Total energy intake was around 67-75 percent of the requirement. Further, this study indicates that there was significantly higher, p<0.05, nitrogen retention in the body in the high-fat diet group. In humans, Murray et al (26) reported no significant difference between the mean blood cholesterol levels of Anagamba nomads, consuming 73% of the energy as fat, mainly from milk, and Kanouri sedentary men, both from East-Niger and of the same genetic stock, consuming only 9% of energy as fat. The total energy intake was around 18,00 kcal/day and mean weight of 52.3 kg and 51.4, respectively. Among Americans, Grundy (27) noted that when body weight was kept constant, a diet rich in monounsaturated fatty acids was as effective in lowering plasma cholesterol as was a diet low in fat and high in carbohydrate. Hallak and Nomani (17) found that during the last two weeks of Ramadan fasting, when the subjects were on high-fat diets (1834 Kcal/day), there was no significant difference in blood cholesterol levels and body weights from beginning and end of this period. In another Ramadan study, when there was no significant change in body weight, Nomani et al. (8) noted change in serum cholesterol level inversely related to fat energy intake (coefficient of correlation, r = - 0.77, p<0.02). In a concave curve-linear model change in total-cholesterol: HDLcholesterol ratio was the lowest and optimal at 36 percent of the energy from fat, coefficient of determination, r2 = 0.86, p<0.01. In the multiple regression r2 value further improved (0.98) with the inclusion of total energy intake, change in total-cholesterol: HDLcholesterol = 4118.28 - 6.009 Fat, g/day - 3.077 Energy, Kcal/day. + 0.0007 Energy (Kcal/day)2, p<0.001, Nomani (7). This suggest that fat and total energy level independently affected changes in the ratio. Maislos, et al (23) found that not only was there no
Ramadaan Smoothie By Riz Rafiq, Founder, FoodAthlete.com Islam comes complete with a built in detox and diet program known as Ramadaan, so take full advantage of it. Avoid fried fattening foods, and fast the way it was meant to be. No more over indulging; use Ramadaan to purify your body of toxins and purge bad habits. I’d like you to try to add this smoothie to your routine. This year, suhoor is so early that some of you were probably thinking to eat after Taraweeh and just sleep through suhoor. After all, we need our sleep too. Others will probably eat leftovers because it’s just too early to make anything. This is a vicious cycle because poor nutrition just leads to more cravings, so here’s what you can do. Drink this smoothie to end your breakfast or to break your fast. This innocent looking smoothie packs a punch. It provides: - 440% of your daily vitamin A needs. - 51% of your daily vitamin C needs. - 21% of your daily vitamin K needs.
significant difference in blood cholesterol level but the HDLcholesterol profile improved during the fasting period. The dietary records were not available. However, the authors had the impression that the food consumed during Ramadan was of higher fat and carbohydrate content than that consumed during the rest of the year. In a recent study, El Ati et al. (6) showed that during Ramadan fasting the body develops adaptive mechanisms and there is an increased and decreased oxidation of fat and carbohydrate, respectively. The findings of the above studies have lead to hypothesize that when energy is a limited, increased dietary fat level favors reduced breakdown of body protein, including labile proteins. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol-receptors , which are protein in nature, also may be affected. Thus, high-fat diet contributes in preventing the elevation of blood cholesterol level at restricted energy conditions, including Ramadan fasting. The findings have probable usefulness not only among Muslims observing Ramadan fast but also non-Muslims with anorexia nervosa, hospital in-patient subjects with low-weight or under-weight, populations in under-developed or developing countries, persons on prolonged low-calorie diets in weight-control programs and in many other situations with restricted energy intake conditions. BLOOD URIC ACID During Ramadan fasting increased blood uric acid have been observed by Fedail et al (19), El Ati et al (6), Gumaa et al (28), Nomani et al (29) and Al-Had-
- 20% of your daily fiber needs. What do all these vitamins do for us? Good question. Here’s a cheat sheet: • Vitamin A helps with night vision, so you can pray Qur’an at night. The amount of Vitamin A in this smoothie may help you understand It too, inshaa Allah. • Vitamin C protects your blood vessels from bursting especially when you’re angry. You know how tempers can flare with the lack of food, so stock up on Vitamin C! • Vitamin K will help ensure you don’t bleed to death. • Fiber makes you feel full, and keeps your plumbing clear. This will reduce constipation and bloating during Ramadaan, so you can have a happy fast. For all you gym folk who plan to work out during Ramadaan, add a scoop of Cookies and Cream protein – it’s delicious – and turns this snack into a complete meal replacement. er et al (30) . Nomani et al (29) noted change in blood uric levels negatively related to the changes in body weight, r = 0.52, p<0.05. In other words, increase in blood uric acid level was positively associated with body weight loss. During the last two weeks of Ramadan fasting, blood uric acid level in subjects with high uric acid level was prevented from further rise with the inclusion of high-fat diet, Nomani et al (7). Uric acid is a product of purine metabolism. Dietary-fat may be helpful in preventing the catabolism of these nitrogen containing compounds and protein during the fasting period. El Ati et al (6) noted the uric acid level returned back to normal one month after Ramadan period. Summary The findings of Ramadan fasting among Muslims and similar limiting energy intake situations among non-Muslims suggest that a high-fat diet around 36 percent of energy through fat, which includes poly-unsaturated fat, may be beneficial in preventing elevation of blood cholesterol or uric acid level and better retention of protein in the body. Pakistan House decided to be on Leased On June 26, 2013 an extraordinary General body meeting was held at Vancouver Jamia Masjid 655 W. 8th Ave Vancouver. In which around 40 members were present. The Pakistan Canada Association, President Mr. Haroon Khan, General Secretary: Akhtar Raza Mirani and Pakistan House chairman Mr. Sabir Ali Pannun conducted this AGM. The committee put up the Pakistan House lease case in front of regular paid members of PCA, in which from day one to current financial matters of Pakistan house were discussed. After a brief Q & A session the majority of
members agreed that the Pakistan House should be leased to cover its current expenses and financial situation. Howevr, two PCA Members Mr. Naseer Pirzada and Mr. Mohammad Afzal Malik opposed technically this decision due to misrepresentation of Pakistan House Surrey lease case in front of public and in extraordinary AGM. Anyhow the board members decided to give this Pakistan House on lease as per of its official documentation. Note: There is no Press release provided by PCA to the Miracle Media for this AGM.
Letters & Opinions
Mushraf, Nawaz &Article 6 By: R.C. Puri It has been recounted in the Dawn, a leading newspaper of Pakistan (as reported by the Miracle newspaper in its last issue) that the PM Nawaz Sharif has conveyed to the NA the intention of his government to prosecute the former President P. Musharraf for treason (the penal offence that entails the punishment even of the death or the life-imprisonment) under Art. 6 of the Constitution of Pakistan and is requesting the Apex Court
of the country to initiate the requisite legal proceedings for the purpose. Previously, the Election Commission of the country miserably failed to provide impartial and unbiased approach against Musharraf, with the ill will to oust him from the election arena and virtually depriving him of his lawful electoral rights and now the government of Nawaz Sharif is stepping ahead to extract the pound of flesh from his throat for the gratification of personal hate campaign of Nawaz
Sharif. One is tried for the offence of treason only where the nature of the offence is of ‘Waging the war against the country’ or any of the other crimes analogous there to and not the bare partial abrogation of the constitution. The revocation of some of the provisions of the constitutional law is a common feature in the democratic countries. The implementation of Emergency, for instance, is one such flagrant instance where under even the Fundamental Rights
OPEN 6 11:30 am DAYS - 10:3 Wed Clo 0 pm sed
of the citizens are suspended, that, however, does not mean the forthwith attraction of the stringent provision of law relating to the treason against the individual enforcing the same. Nevertheless, the issue is different in Pakistan where the Prime Minister and the Chief Justice of Pakistan have their own reasons (may those be invalid to any extent) to nourish their personal grudge against the former army ruler and President of their country, who at the moment is caught in their net. So, now both have all the occasion to cut the throat of their arch enemy and remove a pound of flesh there from like the
character of Shylock in Shakespeare’s famous play the Merchant of Venice. Nonetheless, the men in power and authority in Pakistan presently appear to be forgetting that seeking vengeance by abusing the law in such a flagrant manner is not only contrary to the basic provisions of law, but it smashes the spirit of democratic institutions as well. It paves the way for either the military rule or the advent of the dictatorship, which both are awfully detrimental to the general rights of the common man

ICNA Youth Camping July 3-5th, 2013
It all started at our weekly “Youth Halqah” at ICNA Resource centre about couple months ago. Topic under discussion was, what activities we should do in summer when the schools are off for summer holidays? After few discussions and some crazy ideas everyone agreed upon camping. When the idea was discussed with parents, we received overwhelming response. One brother provided his RV another parent came forward with his cooking skills and couple of parents arranged for much needed equipment. Everything was done on volunteer basis. We didn’t have to rent a thing. All it took couple of parent’s meetings and discussions with youth. Twelve youth and seven parents participated, parents took days off from work to join. Theme of the two nights camping
was “We can have fun and follow the Deen of Allah subhanu taalah” Activity chart by the hour was prepared and sent to all participants as per theme. We gathered at Resource center morning on July 3rd, went through some instructions made a Dua and left for Cultus Lake provincial park. Upon arrival we set up out Masjid where we will pray with jama’a next couple days and setup our tents. We played brotherhood games, volleyball, soccer and badminton, went for hiking, spent time at the beach, roasted marshmallows at the fire pit, shared nasheeds and riddles, ate delicious freshly cooked chicken karai, BBQ and Halwa poori, and most importantly prayed with Jama’a and listened to short reminders in the mornings and evenings. Brother Farooq talked about signs of Al-
lah, brother Azam talked about Muslim identity, Brother Hamza shared a hadeeth about rights of parents and Brother Ghulam Mustafa talked about Ramadan. Morning of July 5th after a delicious breakfast we started packing and fun filled trip ended at Dua and we left for homes 11am that morning. Jazakallah khairan to all parents who worked hard to put this together. May Allah protect our youth, may Allah make them guardians of Islam and may Allah give us wisdom and to serve their needs (aameen) Brothers age of 12 and over can join our weekly youth Halqah and all fun activities. Send us an email if you would like to join. Halqah will resume after Ramadan inshaAllah. youthgroupicna@googlegroups. com

Hammad mixing faith and football
The dream started in a car. Rami Hammad’s biggest dreams usually involved cars. He remembers the long drives from his home in the Dallas suburb of Irving to the southern tip of the state to visit his mother in McAllen. One of the few highlights of those eight-hour rides came when he and his parents passed through Austin. Whenever they traveled up and down I-35, a young Rami would gaze off into the distance until he’d spot Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. “One time, I saw a Texas game was going on,” Hammad said. “You could see all the fans from far away. I looked at my mom and said, ‘I’m going to play there.’ “This dream, always so close and yet seemingly impossible to reach, drove Hammad. He built himself into a menacing 6-foot-5, 310-pound offensive lineman. He got angry after he was labeled an average prospect and he got better. The plan paid off. Texas finally noticed Hammad and offered the Irving High School standout a scholarship three weeks before national signing day. Now the boy is a freshman, living down the street from the stadium. He’s a Longhorn. The fact he’s even at Texas today is a testament to just how far he has come and how much Hammad has wanted this. The young man likes a challenge. His next one is on the horizon. When the sun sets Monday, Hammad will begin a month of fasting. As a practicing and devoted Muslim, this is his annual duty to honor the holy month of Ramadan. For 30 days, he will not consume food from sunrise to sunset. He will not even sip water during his summer workouts with the team. From now until Aug. 7, a time when Hammad must establish his reputation and prove he’s good enough to contribute as a freshman, he will sacrifice. Hammad is not doing this for attention or to make an impression on his teammates. He’ll fast because he’s not afraid to test his faith, not even when a chance to play for the Longhorns is on the line. But this won’t be easy. Texas strength and conditioning head coach Bennie Wylie and team dietitian Amy Culp already know not to underestimate two things about Hammad: His commitment and his communication. He worked out four hours a day this spring. He went from 335 pounds to a trim 308 in three months. The secret? Two grilled chicken breasts for dinner nearly every night, as Culp recommended. And nearly every day since signing, he has text messaged Wylie and Culp with updates and questions. This is the Rami Hammad that Texas was fortunate to discover late in the recruiting process, the kid willing to do everything asked of him and plenty more. His approach was no different last summer. New Irving head coach Aaron De La Torre needed leaders. Ramadan didn’t end until Aug. 18 last year, so his fasting schedule collided with twoa-days. That meant 6 a.m. lifting sessions plus 100-yard sprints in the dead heat of the afternoon. Hammad remembers running 13 laps one day, 16 on another. In that 30-day period, he broke his fast three times. “It was hell,” Hammad said. “I didn’t break it for a good seven days. But then my dad said no more (fasting). I would come home and get in a cold tub, and he freaked out once. He
thought I was passed out.” No, he hadn’t passed out. Hammad just couldn’t find the strength to lift himself out of the tub. Still, he wasn’t going to ask his new coach for help for fear of appearing weak. By the end of his fasting, Hammad had lost nearly 20 pounds. That can’t happen again this summer, not if he’s serious about playing immediately as a true freshman. And he plans to become a starter. Culp gathered as much information as possible to prepare for this month, including calling NFL colleagues for advice and researching the dietary restrictions of Ramadan. The key to optimizing his nutrition during the fast is knowing how his body reacts. His sweat rate and caloric
expenditure are critical. So is the manner in which he’s digesting his sundown meals. Maximizing fuel and sleep are a must, because one three-hour workout in pads is all it takes for a 300-pounder to burn thousands of calories and shed as many as five to 10 pounds. Wylie will cut back Hammad’s training in the weight room to preserve his energy for practice. He knows sprints will be an issue, and safety is his priority. He also knows Hammad can break the fast if necessary, though he wants to avoid that. They’re confident that with a lot of help, Hammad can pull off his fast without threatening his shot at playing time. His father isn’t so sure. Hesham Hammad is lonely. Life isn’t the same without his son by his side. Even in his strict household, Hesham and Rami are truly best friends. They’re all they’ve got. Hesham grew up in Kuwait and found his sliver of the American Dream in Irving, working his way up from mechanic to wholesale car dealer. His son was born in Virginia, lived two years in the country of Jordan as a child and has spent most of his life in Texas. The home they shared was built on a thick foundation of rules. Chief among them: Everything must be earned. The bad things, he’d tell his son, are very easy to do. Stick with the hard things, the right things. No video games. No partying with friends. There were no girlfriends, either. To Hesham, these were all wastes of energy and time. And so, ever since he was a young boy, Rami worked in his father’s shop. He became quite the cus-
tomer, too. Rami purchased his first car, a burgundy 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse, when he was 11 with the help of a $100 loan from Hesham. He spent two years fixing it up, cleaned and detailed his prize, and then he sold it. Repair, detail, sell, repeat. Rami bought and flipped cars nearly a dozen more times as a teen. He kept selling and saving because he had a plan. He was building toward a dream ride, and some would say he owns one today: A pristine silver 2005 Range Rover. Now Rami is trying to flip that car, too. The way he sees it, there’s always room to improve. “I love customizing cars, man,” Rami said. “That’s just what I do. It would be the most difficult decision ever for me to settle on one.” He says all his time spent on football and cars cost him friends and fun along the way, but he learned the value of commitment. The sacrifices gave him a future. There are lots of stories De La Torre can tell about his year spent coaching Rami. He’ll tell his players the best one for years to come. And that’s why his plan to fast this summer bothers Hesham. He stood by Rami’s side last year. Hesham, who is also a practicing Muslim, helped his son get through the rough days. There’s much more at stake this summer. Rami is taking a legitimate risk, and he must do so on his own. The first prayer comes soon after Rami wakes up. Then one before he works out, one when he gets home at night, one after his post-workout shower and one final prayer before bed. Five times a day, every day. Hammad’s dedication to Islam might only be surpassed by his devotion to football. Ramadan, he says, is a time to rediscover his compassion. The holy month asks him to feel as the poor and less fortunate do, to appreciate the blessings in his life. The humbling nature of these 30 days truly resonates. Fasting is a serious commitment, and Ham-
mad knows what is at stake now. He accepts
that on some days he must break the fast. He believes God will forgive him. The goal is to fast for 30 total days. He’ll make up every day he misses. Breaking a fast due to illness is forgivable. His father has told him he can even save some fasting days for the winter if he must. That’s because this year is different. People are relying on Rami. This is no time for a setback in his development, not when his dream is finally within his reach. Hammad says Ramadan reminds him that his religion is a peaceful one. And yet now, more than ever, he must prove he’s as mean a lineman as the Longhorns have when the pads come on. To not play this fall, to not exceed all the expectations people have of an overlooked recruit, would disappoint Hammad to no end. The Texas coaching staff told him he could get on the field immediately. He must get through the fasting and be better than ever. “I’m ready to go to work,” he said. “I’m not going there for any other reason. I’m sure I’m going to wow some people. They’re not going to expect this. That’s something I’ve got to take as fuel.” And on the days when Hammad won’t have fuel, he’ll have faith. Source: ESPN
