MUSLIM GROUP DEMANDS TOUGHER RESPONSE TO MOSQUE ATTACKS One of Britain’s largest Islamic groups has said a “dramatic escalation in violence” against British Muslims needs a much tougher response from the government. Farooq Murad, secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), said the bombings of three Midlands mosques marked “the crossing of a red line”. On Tuesday a man was charged over the bomb attacks in June and July. Pavlo Lapshyn, 25, who was charged a day earlier with the terroristrelated murder of a Muslim pensioner, Mohammed Saleem, in Birmingham in April, appeared before City of Westminster magistrates court where the new charges were announced. Lapsyn, a postgraduate student from Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine, was in Birmingham on a work placement. He was charged with carrying out a series of acts

with the intention to commit acts of terrorism between 24 April and 18 July, related to three separate explosions in Walsall, Wolverhampton and Tipton. No one was injured in the explosions. He was also charged with two offences of unlawfully and maliciously causing an explosion with the intent to endanger life or cause serious injury to a person or property. The court heard that Lapsyn allegedly purchased chemicals to make explosive devices and modified mobile phones to act as detonators. He spoke only to confirm his name and was remanded in custody until another hearing this month. The MCB said the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby in an alleged terrorist act in Woolwich, south London, in May had unleashed

RED CROSS: SYRIA REGIME BLOCKING AID TO HOMS The agency revealed last Friday that it was negotiating a humanitarian pause to be able to enter Homs, where President Bashar alAssad’s forces have been conducting a heavy offensive against rebels, with air and artillery strikes. “We have been trying, for close to 20 days now, to bring medical supplies and other aid to the old city of Homs,” Magne Barth, head of the ICRC delegation in Syria, said in a statement issued in Geneva. “Despite lengthy negotiations with both sides, and three trips back and forth between Damascus and Homs, we have still not received the go-ahead from the Syrian authorities,” he said. Homs, in central Syria, is the epicentre of the armed rebellion that grew from popular street protests against more than four decades of Assad family rule. Some 2,000 people are now believed to be trapped there, aid
agencies say. Reaching tens of thousands of people in areas encircled by government forces or armed opposition groups remains

Scores of civilians killed in US drone strikes: Govt secret doc
A classified Pakistani government document has revealed that scores of civilians died in dozens of CIA-led drone strikes between 2006 and late 2009 in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and that Pakistani officials were “aware of those deaths for many years”. The secret government document was quoted by the London Bureau of Investigative Journalism (LBIJ) in a report and reveals for the first time the Pakistani government’s evaluation of numerous drone strikes. It was prepared through field research by government officials and field agents stationed in Fata. “Of 746 people listed as killed in the drone strikes outlined in the document, at least 147 of the dead are clearly stated to be civilian victims, 94 of those are said to be children,”
the LBIJ said in its report. The 12-page summary paper prepared by the officials, titled Details of Attacks by Nato Forces/Predators in FATA, outlines 75 separate CIA drone strikes between 2006 and late 2009 and contradicts claims by the United States which has repeatedly rejected allegations of high numbers of civilian casualties in drone attacks on Pakistani territory. The US has claimed that “no more than 50 to 60 ‘non-combatants’ have been killed during the entire, nineyear-long drone campaign. The period defined in the report fell in the presidential term of George W. Bush for the most part. However, drone strikes also increased significantly when Barack Obama took oath of office. The Government of Pakistan has consistently maintained that drone strikes are counter-productive, entail loss of innocent civilian lives and have human rights and humanitarian implications and that such strikes also set dangerous precedents in relations between Pakistan and United States. The statement was issued by Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in condemnation to the US drone strike that had killed two suspected militants in Mir Ali Tehsil of North Waziristan tribal region on July 13. Moreover, the statement said that drone strikes have a negative impact on the mutual desire of both countries to forge a cordial and cooperative relationship and to ensure peace and stability in the region. Mamnoon Hussain nominated as PML-N presidential candidate
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has officially nominated Mamnoon Hussain as its candidate for the presidential election. Hussain said that he would personally submit his nomination papers on Wednesday. Mamnoon Hussain had earlier served as the 27th Governor of Sindh for a period of six months. The PPP has nominated Senator Raza Rabbani as their candidate and he will be supported by the ANP and BNP. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has nominated Justice (retd) Wajiuddin Ahmed as their candidate for the election. Members of the Parliament will elect a new president on August 6. The chief justices of high courts will receive nomination papers for the presidential election till July 24 (12:00 noon) and these will then be forwarded to the Returning Officer (Chief Election Commissioner) for scrutiny. The prospective candidates will be needed to attend the scrutiny process by themselves or through their authorised representative along with proposers and seconders, who will bring along with them their original CNICs issued to them by the Senate/National Assembly Secre-
tariat or respective provincial assembly secretariat. In this connection, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) wrote a letter to the registrars of the five high courts on Tuesday and reminded that as per the schedule, nomination papers would be filed before the chief justices of the high courts (presiding officers). Meanwhile, the commission once again drew the attention of political parties to the provisions of Article 13 of the Political Parties Order, 2002 which provides that every political party shall submit to the Election Commission, within 60 days from the close of each financial year, a consolidated statement of accounts of the party, duly audited by a chartered accountant. The last date for filing the statement of accounts by the political parties is August 29, 2013. A certificate signed by the party leader must accompany the statement of accounts stating that (a) no funds from any source prohibited under the Political Parties Order, 2002, were received by the party and (b) the statement contains an accurate financial position of the party. 4 I N T E R N A T I O N A L Mayors want BC to help pay B.C. budget deficit for Patullo Bridge upgrades $178 million higher than predicted Ramadan 17, 1434 H July 26, 2013
Metro Vancouver is calling on the B.C. government to help cover the estimated $1-billion cost to fix or rebuild the aging Pattullo Bridge, saying the province reneged on its warranty after gifting the bridge to the regional district. The demand comes at a time when TransLink is struggling to maintain roads and transit services across the region, as well as find ways to fund a $23-billion wishlist of projects to expand bus and rapid transit lines in Surrey and Vancouver. “If TransLink got left with a broken bridge, we should take that up with the province,” Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan said. “TransLink can’t afford this, and if there’s $1 billion going into another bridge, where is that money going to come from? Certainly, that’s somebody’s transit line.” The Pattullo Bridge, along with several provincial roads and the Knight Street Bridge, were gifted to TransLink by the then-NDP government in the late-1990s when it created the transportation authority on the basis of delivering a comprehensive transit plan and major road network across the region. The new entity was to be funded mostly by fares and legislated property taxes, which were considered palatable by mayors at the time in exchange for less-congested and safer roads and a more connected transit network. Mayors have since balked at further tax increases, insisting they have no control over TransLink priorities, which has resulted in disparity across the region and led to cities being pitted against each other to get projects approved. The Pattullo, along with the two rapid transit lines in Surrey and Vancouver, are among TransLink’s long-term priorities. But Corrigan maintains the provincial government had
suggested that the Pattullo would have a longer lifespan when it downloaded the crossing to TransLink. “We got a bill of goods,” he said. “I think they warrantied that bridge when they turned it over to us.” Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie agreed that the province should help pay to fix or rebuild the Pattullo, noting it had pushed through other major capital projects such as the new $3.3-billion Port Mann Bridge and now replacing the George Massey Tunnel at the expense of other regional priorities. The proposed new tunnel, which is in the design stage, has frustrated mayors who say TransLink could ease congestion in the corridor if it had the money to add more buses. “If TransLink is responsible for replacing the Pattullo or any other capital project, there should be a provincial component,” Brodie said. “The Millennium Line and Expo line … these were 100 per cent the province’s responsibility. They have always had a role in funding large infrastructure in our region.” The debate over the Pattullo arises as Metro Vancouver heads into further consultation with Surrey and New Westminster officials over what to do with the 76-yearold bridge. TransLink had initially cited 25 alternatives for the bridge — which is narrow and winding and does not meet seismic standards — but has since narrowed that down to six possible solutions. These include rehabilitating the existing bridge to three or four lanes, building a new four- to six-lane bridge at the existing crossing, or a new four-lane Surrey-to-Coquitlam bridge. About 76,000 vehicles cross the Pattullo daily. Source: Vancouver Sun
U.S. halts delivery of F-16s to Egypt
President Obama on Wednesday suspended delivery of four fighter jets to Egypt this week, the administration’s most visible response to the turmoil that followed a military coup early this month. The hold on four F-16s manufactured by Lockheed Martin marks the first interruption of Washington’s robust defense-aid pipeline to Egypt, which has turned the Arab world’s most populous country into a regional military powerhouse. Pentagon spokesman George Little said the United States values its relationship with the Egyptian military and characterized the delay of the F-16s as a cautionary measure. “We do not believe it would be in the best interest of the United States to immediately change all of our assistance to Egypt,” Little told reporters Wednesday. But “given the current situation in Egypt, we do not believe it is appropriate to move forward at this time with the delivery of F-16s.” The decision was announced shortly after Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel held an hour-long conversation with Gen. Abdel Fatah al-Sissi, the Egyptian military chief, who
this month deposed the country’s first freely elected president, Mohamed Morsi, with the backing of a large segment of Egyptian society. A U.S. senior defense official said the measure was not intended to be construed as punitive. “This is not a way of punishing them,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to explain policy deliberations. “It gives us more time to consult with Congress, walk them through our strategy and explain our views to them.” The F-16 contract, worth roughly $3.2 billion, was drawn up in 2009. Along with an order for dozens of M1A1 tanks, it is one of the two largest purchases of U.S. military hardware Egypt is making using its U.S. assistance fund. The fund, which is kept in an interest-bearing account in New York, allows Egypt to place orders for items that in some cases are delivered over several years. Some U.S. lawmakers have argued that the United States should halt military aid to Egypt entirely in the wake of Morsi’s ouster. The Obama administration has declined to call the Islamist’s dismissal a coup, in
large part because formally labeling it as such would mandate a halt of U.S. aid under federal law. Because Morsi was ousted and detained, his supporters have clashed with pro-military Egyptians in a standoff that has the potential to plunge the country into protracted political violence. In one such incident, Egyptian soldiers opened fire on pro-Morsi demonstrators, killing more than 50. Some U.S. lawmakers who have spoken critically of U.S. aid to Egypt applauded the F-16 announcement Wednesday. “The Obama administration made the right decision,” Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.) said in a statement. “Arming a military that just this month massacred 50 of its own people would have been a grave mistake.” Source: Washington Post
Boat sinks off Indonesia; 189 saved Rescuers were searching Wednesday for several asylum seekers still believed missing a day after their boat sank in Indonesian waters on the way to Australia. Nearly 190 survivors were brought to safety and nine bodies were recovered. The incident comes days after Prime Minister Kevin Rudd changed Australia’s refugee policy so that people who arrive by boat will no longer be allowed to settle in the country. The move was a response to domestic political pressure and a string of accidents involving rickety boats packed with asylum seekers bound for Australia. Local police chief Lt. Col. Dedy Kusuma said 189 peo-
ple were rescued and nine bodies were recovered after the tugboat sank Tuesday night about 5 kilometers (3 miles) off the coast of West Java’s Cianjur district. It was not clear how many people were missing. West Java police spokesman Col. Martinus Sitompul said the survivors included a pregnant Sri Lankan woman who was being treated at a health center in the town of Cidaun. A baby boy and a 10-year-old girl were among the dead. Sitompul said the group was believed to consist of around 204 migrants from Sri Lanka, Iran and Iraq. They departed Tuesday morning from Jayanti, a coastal town in Cianjur, using a smaller boat that was supposed
British Columbia’s Liberal government missed its budget target for 20122013 by more than $175 million, due primarily to declining resource revenues, but the bottom line numbers could have been worse if the Liberals had not resorted to spending controls halfway through the year, Finance Minister Mike de Jong said Tuesday. But Opposition New Democrat finance critic Mike Farnworth said the Liberals overshot their deficit target significantly and their spring election promises of a debt-free B.C. have produced a debt spree, with the debt increasing $5.8 million over the year. B.C.’s debt ended the year at $55.8 billion and now is estimated to rise to $62.5 billion this year. De Jong said the final public accounting for last year left a budget deficit of $1.146 billion, up $178 million from the $968 million forecast when the Liberals introduced their budget in February 2012. De Jong tried to sweeten the final deficit number by reporting that it was forecast to hit $1.45 billion halfway through the year, but belt-tightening on the government side trimmed the final number downwards. “The deficit, it is, as you see $178 million greater than was projected in the February 2012 budget,” he said. “It is, I suppose, happily, less than was projected in the (quarterly) update. “We didn’t bring it down to where we had targeted it, but we did bring it down from where it was on target to reach during the fiscal year.” De Jong said forecasted revenues were down by $1.1 billion, which were partially offset by $668 million of savings in government spending. The drop in revenue was mostly due to the decline in resource sectors including petroleum, natural gas, natural resources and minerals, he said. Farnworth said he is concerned about the rising debt, especially since the Liberals promised during the spring election campaign to eliminate the debt. “We’ve seen the largest debt increase in the history of British Columbia,” he said. “This is a government that ran around during the election campaign saying debt-free B.C.” The Liberals campaigned on a vision of the future that includes aggressive LNG development, which the party said could lead British Columbia out of debt within 15 years. De Jong said the debt is still within affordability margins for the province because the B.C.’s ratio of debt to gross domestic product comes in at 17 per cent, which is below the 17.6 per cent forecast in the budget. De Jong said the government started to make progress on holding down pay increases for top executives even though total executive compensation was up more than $1 million from last year. De Jong said the total pay for the top 10 executives dropped by almost three per cent, but the numbers were up because more executives were disclosed as part of the program and more executives received bonuses due to performance improvements. De Jong also said the deficit numbers mean all cabinet ministers will receive a 10 per cent pay cut as part of the government’s balanced budget law. Source: CTV news to meet a larger ship at sea to complete the journey to Australia. Their overloaded boat, built to carry only 150 passengers, sank about nine hours into the trip due to a leak. Some of the migrants scrambled for the lifeboat, while others swam before being rescued, he said, citing Iraqi survivor Ali Akbar. Kusuma said the search for the remaining migrants believed missing would continue, involving police, fishermen and local villagers. Rochmali, a rescuer at the scene who goes by one name, said the exact number of missing remained unclear since some survivors may have fled to avoid authorities. The asylum seeker issue has been a longstanding dilemma for both Indonesia and Australia. Last week, Indonesia decided to stop issuing visas on arrival to Iranians because a growing number of them have been caught smuggling drugs or using Indonesia as a transit point for seeking asylum in Australia. As of last Friday, Australia said all newly arrived refugees would be resettled on the island nation of Papua New Guinea, though their claims for asylum will still be assessed in Australia and at detention camps in Papua New Guinea and the tiny island nation of Nauru. Australia will help genuine refugees settle in Papua New Guinea. Others can return to their home nations or a third country other than Australia. The move, condemned by refugee and human rights advocates, is an attempt to stem the flood of asylum seekers who travel to Australia from ports in Indonesia and Malaysia. Hundreds have died attempting the journey in recent years. Rudd said the latest boat incident highlights the need for the policy shift. “Too many innocent people have been lost at sea,” he told reporters in Melbourne on Wednesday. “The asylum seeker policy we’ve adopted is about sending a very clear message to people smugglers that if you try to come to Australia by boat you will not be settled in Australia. ... That is all about destroying the people smugglers’ business model,” Rudd said. Source: Associated Press

Indian school head Al Qaeda says it freed 500 arrested over poisoning inmates in Iraq jail-break
Police have arrested the head of a school in eastern India where 23 children died after eating a meal tainted with pesticide, an officer has said. The children, aged four to 12, fell ill within minutes of eating the lunch of lentils, potatoes and rice cooked at their primary school in a poverty-stricken village in Bihar state on July 16. “The principal surrendered... and we have arrested her for questioning,” said Sujeet Kumar, police chief of Saran district where the incident occurred. “We need to talk to her first before framing charges,” the official said by telephone. Police have been searching for the teacher, Meena Devi, who apparently fled shortly after the tragedy in Gandaman village, which also left some 30 children ill in hospital and sparked angry street protests. Forensic tests showed the meal was contaminated with monocrotophos, a lethal pesticide banned in many countries. Saran district administrator Abhijit Sinha told AFP news agency that the teacher was key to re-
solving the issue of just how the deadly chemicals ended up in the food. “She is the right person to explain how the poison was mixed with the cooking oil,” Sinha said. Oil used to cook the food contained an agricultural insecticide that was five times the strength sold in the marketplace, a forensic report after the tragedy found. Anguished parents buried many of the children on a playing field next to the primary school, in protest against the tragedy. Some of the poverty-stricken parents told how they had only sent their children to the oneroom school to ensure they received at least one meal a day. Others have said their children survived after refusing to eat the food because of its foul odour. Free lunches are offered to some 120 million schoolchildren throughout India in what is the world’s largest school feeding programme. Bihar is one of the country’s poorest and most denselypopulated states. Educators see the midday meal scheme as a way to increase school attendance, in a country where almost half of all young children are undernourished. But children often suffer from food poisoning due to poor hygiene in kitchens and occasionally sub-standard food. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar promised a thorough investigation into the tragedy. The state government has announced plans to pay compensation of nearly $4,000 to families who lost their loved ones.
Al Qaeda claimed responsibility on Tuesday for simultaneous raids on two Iraqi prisons and said more than 500 inmates had been set free in the operation, one of its most brazen in Iraq. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, formed earlier this year through a merger of al Qaeda’s affiliates in Syria and Iraq, said it had stormed Baghdad’s Abu Ghraib jail and another, some 20 km (12 miles) north of capital, after months of preparation. Monday’s attacks came exactly a year after the leader of al Qaeda’s Iraqi branch, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, launched a “Breaking the Walls” campaign that made freeing its imprisoned members a top priority, the group said in a statement. Sunni Islamist militants have in recent months been regaining momentum in their insurgency against Iraq’s Shi’ite-led government, which came to power after the U.S. invasion to oust Saddam Hussein. The group said it had deployed suicide attackers, rockets, and 12 car bombs, killing 120 Iraqi guards and SWAT forces in the attacks in Taji, north of Baghdad, and Abu Ghraib, the prison made notorious a decade ago by photographs showing abuse of prisoners by U.S. soldiers. Interior ministry and medical sources said 29 police and soldiers were killed, and 36 wounded. “ Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki accused militias affiliated with his rival, the anti-U.S. cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, of complicity in the prison-break. “What happened in Abu Ghraib prison was the guards who were inside the prison, are connected to these militias, and it was they who colluded and it was they who opened the doors,” he said on state television.
Sectarian tensions across the region have been inflamed by the civil war in Syria, which has drawn in Shi’ite and Sunni fighters from Iraq and beyond to fight against each other. A senior Iraqi security official said security forces were on high alert and had received information that some of the most high-profile al Qaeda operatives who managed to escape were now on their way to Syria. Iraq has tightened border controls to prevent them leaving the country, said the official on condition of anonymity: “We are cooperating with the Ministry of Justice to get full descriptions and records of the fugitives to help recapture them and bring them back to prison”. The official added that the level of coordination of the prison raids suggested former military officers had been involved in planning, if not executing them. Jail-breaks are not unusual in Iraq, but the scale of Monday’s assaults prompted some politicians to say that the government had lost any semblance of control over security, which has been steadily deteriorating since late last year. Twin roadside bombs planted near two Sunni mosques in the ethnically mixed city of Kirkuk killed seven people late on Tuesday, police said. A further four people were killed when two roadside bombs exploded outside a Sunni mosque in Baghdad’s southern district of Doura as worshippers were leaving after evening prayers, police said. It was not clear who was behind the attacks. So far in July, almost 700 people have been killed in militant attacks, according to violence monitoring group Iraq Body Count. Source: Reuters
Dozens die as Spanish train derails in Galicia A train has derailed in north-western Spain, killing at least 60 people and injuring many more, officials in the Galicia region have said. All 13 carriages of the train, which was travelling from Madrid to Ferrol, came off the tracks near the city of Santiago de Compostela. Images from the scene showed bodies strewn near ruined carriages, and emergency crews searching the wreckage. Analysts say it is the worst rail accident in Spain in four decades. Leader of the regional government Alberto Nunez Feijoo confirmed the death toll but told radio Cadena Ser that it was too early to say what caused the accident. “There are bodies lying on the railway track. It’s a Dante-esque scene,” he said in comments translated by the AFP news agency. The
government said it was working on the hypothesis the derailment was an accident. “We are moving away from the hypothesis of sabotage or attack,” an official said. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy convened an emergency ministerial meeting late on Wednesday and is due to visit the scene of the accident on Thursday. He was born in Santiago de Compostela. “I want to express my affection and solidarity with the victims of the terrible train accident in Santiago,” Mr Rajoy said on his Twitter account. Local authorities have issued an appeal for residents to donate blood to hospitals in the area. About 320 members of Spain’s national police force have been deployed in response to the train derailment, officials say. One witness, Ricardo
MUSLIM : Continued from pg 1 an increase in violence. A series of incidents had added to “a palpable sense of fear” among Muslim communities, it said. “The community has patiently borne the brunt of these attacks despite condemning in the strongest possible terms the tragic murder of Fusilier Lee Rigby,” Murad said. “Despite this spike in incidences, there has yet to be a co-ordinated national effort to ensure that these sorts of attacks never happen again. It cannot be right that a minority community is allowed to be targeted in this manner.” He added: “There is an urgent need for the government and police to respond with a co-ordinated national strategy so as to prevent further attacks.” Scotland Yard’s counter-terrorism command is investigating an arson attack on a mosque in north London on 5 June.
Graffiti reading “EDL” – a possible reference to the English Defence League – was found nearby. The West Midlands explosions and the murder of Saleem, 82, are being investigated by the West Midlands counter-terrorism unit. Detectives are expected to arrive in Ukraine shortly to continue inquiries into Lapshyn. On Sunday the home secretary, Theresa May, said: “I have been shocked and sickened at the brutal murder of Mohammed Saleem and recent attacks on mosques in the West Midlands, all of which are now being investigated as terrorist incidents. “Just as we saw people coming together to denounce Woolwich, so we must come together and stand firm against extremism whatever form it takes.” Source: Guardian
Montesco, described how the train carriages “piled on top of one another” after the train hit a curve, speaking to Spanish Cadena Ser radio station. “A lot of people were squashed on the bottom. We tried to squeeze out of the bottom of the wagons to get out and we realised the train was burning...I was in the second wagon and there was fire. I saw corpses,” he added. The BBC’s Tom Burridge in Madrid says Thursday is a local holiday in the region, and many people would have been preparing to celebrate. Thousands of Christian pilgrims were expected to flock to Santiago de Compostela to attend the city’s main festival in honour of Saint James. However, the city’s tourism board said all festivities planned for Thursday have been can-
celled. Local journalist Francisco Camino said the region was in shock. “This is a tiny place and nothing happens here, nothing important or tragic,” he told the BBC. “We were preparing for the celebrations and now this could turn out to be the worst train crash in many years.” Railway firm Renfe said the train was carrying at least 218 passengers, and came off the tracks on a bend about 3km (two miles) from Santiago de Compostela station. It was on the express route between Madrid and the ship-building city of Ferrol on the Galician coast. The company says it and the track operating company Adif are collaborating with a judge appointed to investigate the accident. Source: BBC News
SYRIA : Continued from pg 1 one of the toughest challenges the ICRC faces in Syria, the agency said. Under international humanitarian law, warring parties are obliged to allow rapid safe passage of humanitarian relief for civilians. “They must also allow civilians in areas besieged by fighting to leave for safer areas, should they wish to do so. “Regrettably, these obligations are not always fulfilled,” the agency said. Meanwhile, in Aleppo, 80 members of the Syrian opposition have been released from Aleppo’s central prison under a deal named “Food for freedom” that was brokered by the Syrian Red Crescent. Under the agreement, the Ahrar alSham movement which has been laying siege to government-controlled parts of the city will ease their blockade to enable
the forces get in much needed food supplies. The release of the prisoners and the deal behind it is seen as a rare gesture of goodwill between the government and its opponents. “To the Syrian opposition, though, it’s a recognition of their might by the Syrian regime,” Al Jazeera’s Mohammed Adow said, reporting from Aleppo. The latest developments came as the head of UN investigation into the use of chemical arms in Syria, Ake Sellstrom, and the UN disarmament chief, Angela Kane, arrived in Damascus on Wednesday to start talks with Assad’s government on securing access to sites in Syria where chemical weapons are said to have been used. The Troika of Chiefs on Way Out
The last quarter of 2013 is important as President Asif Ali Zardari completes his term in office, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Choudhry (CJP) retires, and the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Pervaiz kayani goes home after having availed of his three years extension. Naturally, replacing them all is a real challenge. So some modification in the current policy matters may become imperative just to re-model/facelift three respective areas namely the Presidency, the Judiciary and the military respectively. The painful history of the past military take overs reminds us of the harsh realities associated with it. But every time, the coup maker succeeded in getting validation sticker from the Apex court under the pretext of doctrine of necessity. Originally a PCO judge himself, Mr. Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Choudhry thwarted all pressure from General Musharraf, and on 3rd November 2007 emergency/ mini martial law was imposed. Those who took oath under fresh PCO stayed and the rest of the judges around sixty were house arrested. BB’s assassination was cashed by the PPP and later on President Musharraf had to step down to make room for Zardari. With the intervention of general Kayani, the Zardari regime finally restored the Choudhry judiciary replacing the Dogar judiciary.
Ever since, starting with repealing of NRO, Justice Iftikhar Choudhry has been passing historic judgments independently, but the PPP government has been defying all apex court verdicts. Despite its failures to deliver, the PPP regime managed to last for full term of five years, however, the credit goes to the shrewd Zardari who occupies the Presidency since 2008. The COAS General Kayani, a cool headed gentleman stayed away from interfering in the political matters. And Justice Choudhry didn’t invoke article 190 asking for the military intervention for his verdicts to be implemented for reason of expediency. Many believe that because of the international situation, the army has been too busy on the western border and is not in a position to take any step against the system at present and in the foreseeable future. National Security Issue: Pakistan Tehreeq-i-Insaaf Chairman Imran Khan’s concern about national security is genuine one. He has called for a closed-door meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani before an all parties conference (APC) on national security takes place. Nevertheless, with the issue of replacements, the uncertainty again looms over Pakistan as it’s a major challenge for the third timer Prime Minister. He must play smart this time.
Two questions: Firstly, will the new chief justice be as strong as the current one enabling the apex judiciary to carry on with their verdicts without interference from any quarter? Secondly, is there any guarantee that the cool headed Kayani has persuaded his soldiers to remain subservient to the government after he leaves office? The major worry is if the army is just monitoring now to retaliate later. Most probably, the incoming bosses will adopt policies different from the ones being pursued at present. If that happens, the whole picture may change abruptly with new appointments. Suggestions for choosing criterion: Reviewing the past makes the future foreseeable with ease: Iskandar Mirza selected Ayub Khan, Bhutto selected Zia-ul-Haq, Nawaz selected Musharraf, and all selectees went for coup against the selectors. It’s said, “Once bitten twice shy.” This time Nawaz will have to be extra careful while choosing. He should also take civil and military administration onboard while appointing someone on such high profile position. Another clue is, if the prime minister goes for a General who is honest, efficient, a decent human being, qualified for this position based on seniority, and a super clean record, and then there is not even a slight chance of adventur-
ism on his part to threaten the civilian government. Surely, the Army chief selected on the basis of strict merit will be efficient and intelligent enough to meet the national and international challenges without any reluctance in the best interest of the country. So based on the multiple factors including seniority and the merit, the next Chief of the Army Staff and the Chief Justice of the Supreme court of Pakistan can be picked with confidence. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has no option but to adhere to the principle of sequence of seniority list; he should not violate the rule by giving extension to the retiring General as this will amount to deprive the others to avail their right. However after the retirement of the two chiefs, the services of Mr. Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Choudhry can be best utilized as Advisor law and justice to help maintain the momentum of judicial reforms, whereas, General kayani can be retained as military advisor to the government of Pakistan for his experience with the US and the NATO, so that 2014 withdrawal takes place smoothly as scheduled. Furthermore, the common prediction is President Zardari would leave the country before the day of losing his presidential immunity, yet anything pending against him prior to becoming the president remains open for litigation beyond doubt. This time again, it’s up to the Leg-

Believe or not, if a wise voting takes place, there will not be any international embarrassment as was there due to ill reputed outgoing President. Pakistan democracy is far from maturity. It will flourish if the culture and mindset of all involved changes for the better. Waan laysa lil insani illa ma’ sa’aa That man can have nothing but what he strives for.

Justin Trudeau MP (Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada) attended several events throughout British Columbia this week. Mr. Trudeau was invited by Surrey Jamea Masjid Committee on July 24 at iftar time at Surrey Jamea Masjid. He received a very warm welcome by the Masjid committee where a large number of Muslim community members greeted him at the entrance of the parking lot. To everyone’s pleasant surprise, he was wearing the traditional Pakistani dress (Shalwar Qameez) for this visit. Mr Trudeau joined the congregation in the breaking of the fast in the Masjid basement , where Qari Abdul Wahab appreciated his efforts in Liberal Party and specially acknowledged his father Pierre Elliott Trudeau. Mr. Trudeau prayed with Muslim community in the Mosque be-
fore the presentation. Mr. Adam Buksh, President of Surrey branch of BCMA, gave the welcome speech after the Maghrib prayer and Mufti Asim Rashid introduced Justin Trudeau among the people. Mr. Trudeau thanked everyone and passed the wonderful remarks about the religion of Islam and Muslim community. At the end of presentation Mr. Buksh presented Mr. Trudeau with a plaque while Mr. Musa Ismail, President of BCMA thanked him. After the dinner, Mr. Trudeau departed the Surrey Jamea Mosque alongside Mr. Bilal Cheema, who was instrumental in organizing this visit. Although Mr. Trudeau has been to Surrey on several occasions in the past, this was his first visit returning as the Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and his first visit to a Mosque in B.C. in that capacity.

Ramadan Generosity in Action you spend on the deprived, and you assist people in the face of calamities.” After revelation these qualities were greatly amplified in him . It is related in the compilations of al-Bukhari and Muslim, from Anas, “The Messenger of Allah was the nicest, bravest, and most generous of all people.” Anas also relates, “After Islam, the Messenger of Allah was never asked for anything except he gave it. A man came to him and asked him for a valley filled with livestock and he gave it to him. He returned to his people and said. ‘O People! Become Muslim, for Muhammad gives like a man who does not fear poverty.”’ Anas further mentions, “If it were the case that a man became Muslim, not desiring anything other than worldly gain, he would not reach the evening except Islam was more beloved to him than the world and everything on the face of the earth.” Imam Muslim also relates, from Safwan bin Umayya, “The Messenger of Allah started giving me gifts while he was the most hated of people to me. He continued to give to me until he became the most beloved of people to me.” 1Ibn Shihab (al-Zuhri) mentions that in the aftermath of the Battle of Hunayn he gave Safwan one hundred sheep and goats, then another hun-
dred, then yet another. In al-Maghazi, al-Waqidi mentions, “On that day the Prophet gave Safwan bin Umayya a valley filled with camels, sheep and goats. Safwan said, ‘This level of generosity could only be pleasing to a prophet.’” In the compilations of al-Bukhari and Muslim, it is related by Jubayr bin Mut’im that in the aftermath of the Battle of Hunayn the desert Arabs were tugging at the Prophet asking him to divide up some of the war booty amongst them. He said to them, “If I had sheep and goats equal to the number of these thorny desert shrubs [scattered around us] I would divide them amongst you. You would find me to be neither a miser, nor a liar, nor a coward.” Imam al-Bukhari relates a hadith from Sahl bin Sa’d that a cloak was given to the Messenger of Allah. He wore it and he really needed it. A man asked him for it and he gave it to him. The Companions rebuked him saying, “He needed it and you know that he never refuses a request.” He said, “I only asked for it so it could be my burial shroud.” And it turned out to be his burial shroud. All of his generosity was for Allah, be he Mighty and Majestic, and seeking His pleasure. Either
he would spend for the poor, or the needy, or in the way of Allah, or to win over to Islam those whose faith would be strengthened by his generosity. His character was an embodiment of this book (the Qur’an) in that he was pleased with what it describes as pleasurable, angered by what it describes as evoking anger. He hastened to implement what it encourages and to avoid what it forbids. For this reason his generosity and goodness was increased during this month (Ramadan), because of the presence of Gabriel and his reviewing with him the Qur’an, which encourages nobility and generosity, with him. There can be no doubt that association [with a noble, generous person] breeds assimilation. Imam Zaid Shakir is amongst the most respected and influential Islamic scholars in the West. As an American Muslim who came of age during the civil rights struggles, he has brought both sensitivity about race and poverty issues and scholarly discipline to his faith-based work. By: Imam Zaid Shakir We often focus on the fasting and Tarawih prayers during Ramadan. However, the blessed month is also a time when generosity is greatly emphasized. One should try to be exceedingly generous during this month. In this section (pp. 305-310) Ibn Rajab examines the generosity of the Prophet . This examination is an encouragement for the believers to be excessively generous during the blessed month of Ramadan. It is related in the two sound books (alBukhari and Muslim) on the authority of Ibn ‘Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him and his father: The Messenger of Allah was the most generous of people. He was especially generous in Ramadan when the Angel Gabriel would come and review the Qur’an with him. Gabriel would to review the Qur’an with him every night during the month of Ramadan. Verily, when Gabriel would come and review the Qur’an with him in Ramadan, the Messenger of Allah was more generous than the free-blowing wind. Imam Ahmad records this hadith with the additional words at its end, “He was not asked for anything except that he gave it.” Generosity is expansive and abundant giving. Allah is described as generous. [We read] in the compilation of Imam alTirmidhi, from the transmissions of Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas, that the Prophet said, “Allah is generous, He loves generosity; He is noble, He loves nobility.” His compilation also mentions, on the authority of Abu Dharr, on the authority of the Prophet narrating directly from his Lord: O my servants! If the first of you, the last of you; the living of you, the dead of you; the intact of you, the decomposed of you; were to gather in a vast plain, and every individual were to ask of me his wildest dream, and I were to grant everyone what he asked, that would not decrease my dominion as much as [the water taken from] an ocean one of you were to pass by and dip a needle into it and then extract it. That is because I am generous, extant, and glorious. I do what I please. My giving is a word and my punishment is a word. My command to something when I desire it is but to say, “Be, and it is!” In a well-known narration, Fudail bin ‘Iyyad mentioned, “Every night Allah proclaims, ‘I am generous, I love generosity; I am noble, I love nobility.’” Allah is the most generous of all. His generosity is amplified during certain special times such as the month of Ramadan. [It is in the context of discussing Ramadan] that he has revealed, When my servants ask about Me, verily I am close by. I respond to the call of the supplicant when he invokes me. (Qur’an 2:186) In a hadith mentioned by Imam al-Tirmidhi and others, the Prophet mentioned, “During it (Ramadan) a caller cries out, ‘Those desiring good come forward, and those desiring evil stay away.’ Allah has those He liberates from Hell, and that occurs every night [during Ramadan].” In that Allah has predisposed His Prophet upon the most perfect and noblest character traits, as is related in a hadith from Abu Hurayra, from the Prophet that he said, “I have only been sent to perfect the noblest of character.” Imam Malik mentions this in the Muwatta. The Prophet was indeed the most generous of all people. The Prophet possessed these praiseworthy qualities even before Islam. Owing to this, Khadija said to him, when he initially received revelation, “I swear by Allah, He will never disgrace you! You uphold the sanctity of blood relations, you honor the guest, you bear the burdens of others,
May Allah bless everyone with peace and happiness in this Ramadan

S P E C I A L Narrated Sahl: The Prophet said, “There is a gate in Paradise called Ar-Raiyan, and those who observe fasts will enter through it on the Day of Resurrection and none except them will enter through it. It will be said, ‘Where are those who used to observe fasts?’ They will get up, and none except them will enter through it. After their entry the gate will be closed and nobody will enter through it.”
Maximize the last 10 days of Ramadan
By: Abdul Malik Mujahid Laylatul Qadr (the Night of Power) is described in the Quran as, “better than a thousand months” (97:3). Any action done on this night such as reciting the Quran, remembering Allah, etc. is better than acting for one thousand months which do not contain the night of Qadr. Allah’s Messenger used to exert himself in devotion during the last ten nights to a greater extent than at any other time.” (Muslim). Allah’s peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet. Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, related that the Prophet said: Look for Laylatul Qadr on an odd-numbered night during the last ten nights of Ramadan (Bukhari). The Prophet said: “Whoever prays during the night of Qadr with faith and hoping for its reward will have all of his previous sins forgiven.” (Bukhari and Muslim recorded from Abu Huraira). Here are some tips of things we can do on the Night of Power and the time before and after it. 1. Take a vacation for Allah. We take a break from our jobs for almost everything in life. Why not this time to focus on worshiping and thanking our Creator. If this is not possible at least take a few days off if you can. This can make it easier to stay awake at night to do extra Ibadah, not having to worry about getting to work the next day. It will also facilitate doing Itikaf. 2. Do I’tikaf. It was a practice of the Prophet to spend the last ten days and nights of Ramadan in the masjid for I’tikaf. Those in I’tikaf stay in the masjid all this time, performing various forms of zikr (the remembrance of Allah), like doing extra Salat, recitation and study of the Quran. They do not go outside the masjid except in case of emergencies, therefore, they sleep in the masjid. Their families or the masjid administration takes care of their food needs. I’tikaf of a shorter period of time, like one night, a day or a couple of days is encour-
aged as well. 3. Make this special Dua. Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said: I asked the Messenger of Allah: ‘O Messenger of Allah, if I know what night is the night of Qadr, what should I say during it?’ He said: ‘Say: O Allah, You are pardoning and You love to pardon, so pardon me.’ “(Ahmad, Ibn Majah, and Tirmidhi). The transliteration of this Dua is “Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘annee” 4. Recite the Quran. Perhaps you can choose Surahs or passages from the Quran, which you have heard in Tarawih this past Ramadan to recite. If you attend a class where the recitation of the Quran is taught, this is a great time to put your knowledge into practice. 5. Reflect on the meaning of the Quran. Choose the latest Surah or Surahs you’ve heard in Tarawih and read their translation and Tafseer. Then think deeply about their meaning and how it affects you on a personal level. 6. Get your sins wiped out. Abu Huraira narrated that the Messenger said: Whoever stands (in prayer) in Laylatul Qadr while nourishing his faith with selfevaluation, expecting reward from Allah, will have all of his previous sins forgiven. [Bukhari and Muslim). Don’t just pray using the shorter Surahs that you know. Try to make your prayers longer, deeper and meaningful. If you are familiar with longer Surahs, read the translation and explanation and then pray reciting these Surahs, carefully reflecting on the meaning while you pray. Even if you are only familiar with the shorter Surahs, read the translation and explanation beforehand, and then pray reflecting on the message of the Surahs. This is a good way to develop the habit of concentration, even in regular prayers, where many of us tend to be fidgety and/or easily distracted. 7. Make a personal Dua list. Ask yourself what you really want from Allah. Make a list of each and everything, no matter how small or how big it is, whether
it deals with this world or not. Allah loves to hear from us. Once this list is ready, you can do three things: • Ask Allah to give you those things • Think about what actions you have taken to get those things • Develop a work plan to get those things in future. 8. Evaluate yourself. Ask yourself those questions that need to be asked. Do an evaluation of where you are and where you are going. Let this evaluation lead you to feel happiness for the good you have done and remorse for the bad you have done. This latter feeling should make it easier to seek Allah’s sincere forgiveness when making the Dua mentioned in tip number one above. 9. Make long, sincere and deep Duas One of the best times to do this is during the last part of the night. Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, related that the Prophet said: When the last one-third of the night remains, our Lord, the Glorious One descends towards the heaven of the earth and proclaims: Who is that who supplicates for Me, and I grant his supplication? Who is that who begs Me for anything and I grant it to him? And who is that who seeks My forgiveness, and I forgive him? (Bukhari, Muslim). That means for instance, waking up one hour before Suhoor time to ask Allah for anything and everything you want that is Halal. This can be done using the Duas of the Sunnah, but also Dua in your own language, with sincerity and conviction. 10. Memorize a different Dua every night They don’t have to be long. They can be just one line. And be sure to know what they mean generally at least, even if you don’t know the exact translation in English. You can put them on index cards (or and keep them with you during the day, glancing at them during work, while driving, waiting in line, etc.) Then practice them at night in prayer. 11. Have Iftar with the family If you’ve spent Iftar time on weekdays in your cubicle at work alone with a couple of dates, now is the last few days you’ll have this Ramadan to spend with your family. Use it wisely. 12. Take the family to Tarawih
Have your spouse and kids missed Tarawih most of Ramadan because you weren’t there to drive them to the Masjid, which is too far away to walk to? If so, do all of yourselves a favour and bring everyone for Tarawih in these last ten nights. 13. Attend the Dua after the completion of Quran recitation Almost all Masjids where the Imam aims to finish an entire reading of the Quran in Tarawih prayers in Ramadan will be completing their recitation in these last ten nights. They may try to end on one of the odd nights and read the Dua at the end of a reading of the Quran. Attend this particular night’s Tarawih prayer with your family. See if you can attend different Masjids’ Tarawih prayers the night they finish reading the Quran. 14. Finish reading a book on the Prophet Read about the Prophet’s life, which can increase your love for him and Islam by seeing how much he struggled for Allah’s sake. It may inspire you to push yourself even harder during these last ten nights. This community is built on sacrifice. 15. Plan for the next year Once you’ve done a self-evaluation, you can plan on where you want to go, at least in the next 12 months. Laylatul Qadr is a great night to be thinking about this (without taking away from your worship), since you’ll Insha Allah, be in a more contemplative state. You may choose to dedicate one night of power for evaluation and one night for planning for the next year. 16. To do list for the Night of Power Make a to do checklist for each Night of Power. This should define how you would like your night, the one better than a thousand months, to be used. Pick things from this list and define the sequence you would like to do things in. This will help you avoid wasting your time in unproductive chats which common in the festive atmosphere of Masjids at the Night of Power.
Syed Soharwardhy at his Monthly Darse Quran in Newton Community Centre
On July 13, Islamic Association of Western Canada, organized an event at Newton Community Centre Surrey to remember the remember of Ramadan Blessing. Mr. Haider Ali Khan, president of Islamic Association of Western Canada, was the MC for this event. The Darse statrted by the recitation of Quran. This month Darse was on Surah 15: Al-Hijr (The Rocky Tract) Br. Syed explained these 1- 12 Ayats with details Tafseer. 1. Alif-Lam-Ra. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur’an, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. These are the Verses of the Book, and a plain Qur’an. 2. Perhaps (often) will those who disbelieve wish that they were
Muslims [those who have submitted themselves to Allah’s Will in Islam Islamic Monotheism, this will be on the Day of Resurrection when they will see the disbelievers going to Hell and the Muslims going to Paradise]. 3. Leave them to eat and enjoy, and let them be preoccupied with (false) hope. They will come to know! 4. And never did We destroy a township but there was a known decree for it. 5. No nation can anticipate its term, nor delay it. 6. And they say: “O you (Muhammad ) to whom the Dhikr (the Qur’an) has been sent down! Verily, you are a mad man. 7. “Why do you not bring angels to us if you are of the truthful ones?”
8. We send not the angels down except with the truth (i.e. for torment, etc.), and in that case, they (the disbelievers) would have no respite! 9. Verily We: It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Qur’an) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption) . 10. Indeed, We sent Messengers before you (O Muhammad) amongst the sects (communities) of old. 11. And never came a Messenger to them but they did mock him. 12. Thus do We let it (polytheism and disbelief) enter into the hearts of the Mujrimun [criminals, polytheists, pagans, etc. (because of their mockery at the Messengers)]. Br. Syed also highlighted the blessing of this Holy month of Ramadan, and a Q &A session
was held in which Ramadan Time table in BC, about Marriage age and many other religious questions were put forward. Syed Sharwardhy answered all those questions in details in the light of Quran and Sunnah and also requested to those people who did not full fill their commitments of pledges for Masjid Olliya Allah. He also updated the zoning of this Masjid and said don’t listen any rumors about its zoning, it is not a issue , it’s a routine wirk of every city council., Inshallah it will be complete. At the end Syed sahib invited Br. Sayid Uffani to make Duaa for all Muslim Ummah. At Iftar snacks and refreshments were served and after Magrhrib prayer the delicious dinner was served to al guests.

Sneak Preview of New Guru Nanak Emergency Services & others SMH Departments History of South Asian Donations. As dawn broke over a chill November morning last winter, the atmosphere inside Surrey multi-cultural radio station RedFm 93.1 was hot with anticipation. Carefully laid plans for an all-day radiothon to raise funds for Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation were about to be thrown to the airwaves. It was 6 a.m. when the first call went out to listeners and 10 p.m. when the last call came in. Final tally? A staggering $1 million. That’s nearly $60,000 an hour. And the hospital is committed to them. The money raised, part of the Foundation’s $15-million capital campaign, will benefit the new Emergency department (ED), where the main entry will be called The Guru Nanak Emergency Services Front Entrance, after the 15th-century founder of Sikhism. Thanks to donors like those from Surrey’s South Asian community, the province’s busiest ED, which sees more than 70,000 visitors a year in a facility designed to handle 44,000, will be nearly five times the size of the current one when it opens in 2013. On July 13, 2013: An open invitation along with politicians, donors and members of the community, were invited to a ‘sneak preview’ of the new emergency department at Surrey Memorial Hospital. Standing in the Level 1 area of SMH’s new Critical Care Tower, you are instantly in awe of the beautiful architectural details – a mix of West Coast with contemporary flair. Jane Adams, president and CEO of Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation (SMHF), was on hand and greeting individuals with smiles and pleasantries as they walked through the doors. She spoke with Darpan magazine
reporter for a moment, saying “The Province’s support for our new emergency made it possible for the foundation to reach out to the community for help. The opportunity to support family-friendly care, including a separate emergency centre for children, really resonated with our donors and we thank them for their generosity.” She goes on to add, “It’s a lot of hard work that’s gone into it, a lot of people have been generously donating towards the emergency center and Guru Nanak’s name is going to be on the front entrance, something as South Asians we can all be very proud of – it’s going to go down in history.” “This sneak preview gives everyone a chance to see inside our bigger, more modern space before it opens on the 1st of October 2013. We think people who attend will be amazed after seeing how we’ve integrated clinical best practices and state-of-the-art technology into the care they’ll receive,” he added. The formalities commenced and Ron Knight, chair of SMHF, took to the podium to make the opening remarks and thanked the provincial and local governments, along with a number of organizations, donors and volunteers. He told the gathered crowd that SMH’s new emergency department will be opening this year on October 1. The new 57,000-square-foot space, which is five times bigger than Surrey’s current ER, will be organized into specific areas and zones to provide efficient, patient-centred care. There will also be a separate pediatric emergency department, which was designed with children and families in mind. Knight went on to say the hospital’s Critical Care Tower, which is comprised of eight

floors, will open next year. He also mentioned that SMHF has raised $60 million over the last 20 years. Surrey-Tynehead MLA Amrik Virk, who is the Minister of Advanced Education and a former SMHF director, made a speech on behalf of the provincial government. He explained the Critical Care Tower is part of the province’s lasting legacy and shared an interesting fact – the emergency is the size of three NHL hockey rinks. He also thanked all the generous donors, who supplied 20 per cent of additional funding for the hospital expansion. Virk also stated, “Our government is building better patient care for families across British Columbia, including right here in Surrey, with a new critical care tower and new emergency department that is part of a $512-million redevelopment and expansion. I invite the people of Surrey and surrounding communities to come to the sneak preview and see the results of our investment.” Surrey Memorial Hospital will open its doors to the public on Saturday, July 13 between 10 am to 3 pm to view the new emergency department, which is located on the first floor of the Critical Care Tower. Knight thanked the City of Surrey for its contribution of $2.8 million and thanked Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts and city council for their vision. Watts took to the podium, “SMHF is extraordinary for their dedication, passion and volunteerism.” She wanted to acknowledge that SMH’s emergency is “actually the
largest in Canada” and will be the largest until McGill’s new emergency opens next year, and “we need to be very proud of this.” After the festivities concluded, groups of individuals were taken on a tour of the emer-
gency department. Needless to say, I along with everyone in my group were highly impressed with the overall emergency department, which is not only thoughtful in its space, layout and amenities, but boasts revolutionary technology and focuses on efficient patient-centred care. In addition, there will be more staff on hand to provide better care for patients of all ages. Source: . by Renu Singh-Joseph, Editorin-Chief of DARPAN Magazine, Photos By Miracle Media

P O L I T I C S
A “Democratic” Coup By Deepak Tripathi The military overthrow of Egypt’s freelyelected president Mohamed Morsi represents the beginning of a new, more turbulent phase in the country. The coup in early July was decisive in the immediate run, ending a brief democratic experiment with a Muslim Brotherhood politician in power. Beyond the immediate outcome, however, the military takeover has thrown Egypt’s future into uncertainty, and caused further ruptures in civil society. While the Brotherhood insists on Morsi’s reinstatement, surely an unlikely prospect, the anti-Morsi coalition of liberals, secularists and Mubarak-era elites is determined to move on. The newly installed interim president Adly Masour has appointed a 35-member cabinet led by an economist, Hazem el-Beblawi. General Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who led the coup, is the first deputy prime minister and defence minister. Prominent anti-Morsi figure and ex-International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Mohamed ElBaradei is one of three acting vice presidents in the new administration, which has also dissolved the Muslim Brotherhood-dominated upper house of the Egyptian parliament. The new administration is made up of technocrats and unelected people, establishing the armed forces as the real power. More than promises to hold elections, the military’s future course of action is vague at best. The truth is that the Egyptian people are bitterly divided into the Morsi camp and the opposition, which in itself is fragmented. That Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood still enjoy substantial support among the poorest sections, especially in the countryside, is not in doubt The coup would have been inconceivable without millions of anti-Morsi Egyptians
pouring out into the streets of Cairo and other cities. The protests offered the generals a justification to intervene on “behalf of the people.” To many, Morsi was his own worst enemy. In his short presidential tenure since winning the election by a wafer-thin majority a year ago, Morsi had alienated large sections of Egyptian society that had either not voted for him, or had supported him reluctantly. Egypt’s Christians, about 10 per cent of the 85 million person population, felt threatened by President Morsi, who was viewed as too Islamist and who had amassed too much power in the presidency. Liberal and women’s groups were deeply unhappy with the new constitution, which Morsi had pushed through just over six months ago. His administration was unable to tackle the worsening economy, betraying the hopes of many Egyptians. For them, the revolution that toppled Hosni Mubarak was far from over. So, amid renewed demonstrations against Egypt’s elected head of state, the military removed President Morsi on “behalf of the people.” However, there are problems with this narrative. The truth is that the Egyptian people are bitterly divided into the Morsi camp and the opposition, which in itself is fragmented. That Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood still enjoy substantial support among the poorest sections, especially in the countryside, is not in doubt. There are large demonstrations by Brotherhood supporters almost every day, and a military crackdown is going on against Brotherhood leaders and activists. In one of the bloodiest incidents, more than 50 Morsi supporters were killed when soldiers shot at a crowd, said to be praying outside the headquarters of the Republican Guards. The swearing-in of the new cabinet took place amid continuing clashes in which
lives were being lost. Morsi and other senior figures of the Brotherhood are either in custody or at large. He is under investigation for “spying, inciting violence and ruining the economy.” The leaders’ assets have been frozen. These events do not bode well for Egypt and the wider Middle East. The military is back in power, and the most significant political movement, with grassroots support, is the target of repression. Leading opponents of the Muslim Brotherhood are collaborating with the military. This experiment has failed decade after decade in Egypt, and the record of military coups leading to a smooth transition to real democracy is poor. The same educated liberal-secular middle classes that were in opposition to Morsi’s rule will soon be opposing the military regime. It is only a matter of time. The two greatest risks for Egypt and the region are further radicalization and volatility. There are credible reports that the military overthrow of President Morsi happened under the Obama administration’s close watch. On 6 July, the New York Times published an expose on the final hours of Morsi’s presidency, written by David D. Kirkpatrick and Mayy El Sheikh. According to their account, the United
States, through an Arab foreign minister acting as emissary, made a ‘final offer’ which would avoid a military coup: the appointment of a new prime minister and cabinet that would take over all legislative powers and replace Morsi’s chosen provincial governors. For Morsi, it was a coup in all but name, and he refused. A telephone call between President Morsi’s top adviser, Essam el-Haddad, and President Obama’s national security adviser, Susan Rice, followed. Rice informed him that a military takeover was about to begin, and a Morsi aide told another associate, “Mother just told that we will stop playing in an hour.” The State Department in Washington offered no comment on America’s role. Washington’s response in the aftermath, and the announcement that the United States would go ahead with the supply of F16 aircraft to the Egyptian military, suggest that Washington’s priority is to see “controlled change” in Egypt. As clashes continued on the streets of Cairo, America’s deputy secretary of state William Burns met Egypt’s new leaders in the capital, telling them of President Obama’s firm commitment to help Egypt succeed in this “second chance” for democracy. President Obama’s preferred scenario is to ensure that any political change in Egypt is under the supervision of the army, with a lesser role at best for the Muslim Brotherhood in governance in future. In its fundamentals, Washington’s latest remedy is no different from the past, since President Anwar Sadat broke with the Soviet Union in the 1970s, and joined the U.S. alliance. ICNA Relief-Canada Fundraising Iftari Dinner ICNA Relief Canada organized fundraising iftaar dinner 2013 to raise funds for Syria, Burma and Orphan sponsorship. Program held at Pakistan House Surrey on July 14th After recitation from holy Qur’an Br Ghulam Mustafa presented about the situation in Burma (Myanmar). Since its independence in 1948 our brothers and sisters in Rohingya, Burma have been treated inhumanly. They have no right of land and citizenship even though they have been living there for centuries. In recent years genocide of Muslim population by local Buddhist with the help of Government authorities have been intensified. Scores have been murdered, their huts have been destroyed and they are left homeless. International media has been quiet and UN is not imposing any sanctions on local authorities. ICNA relief Canada attended a meeting in Malaysia last year organized by International federation of relief and development (IDRF). Seven major relief organizations attended the meeting and decided to work together on the issue. ICNA-Relief Canada spent $140,000 dollars for relief activities in Rohingya last year through our partners in Malaysia and Indonesia. These funds are spent on shelter, food and medical relief. Br Riam (A representative from Syrian community) presented about the situation in Syria. Since the conflict started huge number of people have been affected and forced to live in refugee camps because their homes have been completely destroyed. According to UN over two millions are living in refugee camps inside and outside Syria. 120,000 died and over 200,000 injured since the war started. Lots of human lives could have been saved if there was medical treatment available. Over 75% hospitals have been destroyed in the area. Because of unavailability of medical treatment even minor wounds turns infectious and causing deaths. ICNA Relief launched a massive campaign last year to help our brothers and
sisters in Syria. We raised and spent $260,000 last year on emergency food relief, Medical supplies and equipment and children education. ICNA Relief also supports close to 3000 orphan kids every year through its “orphan sponsorship program”. Funds raised for this cause are spent on building orphanages and provision of food, education and lodging of orphans.
Concerned community members from all races and walk of life attended the Surrey, July 14th program and helped our brothers and sisters across the globe by their donations and prayers. Guest speaker sheikh Musleh Khan also highlighted the importance of helping these brothers and sisters in need. He quoted that we should put our self in the shoes of those brothers and sisters who are going trough hardship to get the feeling and motivation to help them. ICNA Relief Canada wants to thank all brothers and sisters who attended the event and those who had intention but couldn’t attend for any reasons. We raised close to 19K so far, lots of brothers and sisters who could not come to the event and wanted to donate have called after the event. Donation for any of these causes can be made online at icnareliefcanad.ca Or by calling our Surrey office at (778)578-3080. We also thank all the volunteers for their efforts, may Allah give you all the best of reward..aameen

H E A L T H
Health guidelines for Ramadan By: Dr. Farouk Haffejee This article provides advice on how to avoid some common problems encountered in Ramadan. If followed, it will enable one to fast comfortably and enjoy fully the spiritual benefits of Ramadan. During the month of Ramadan, our diet should not differ very much from our normal diet and should be as simple as possible. The diet should be such that we maintain our normal weight, neither losing nor gaining. However, if one is overweight, Ramadan is an ideal time to normalize one’s weight. In view of the long hours of fasting, we should consume slow digesting foods including fiber containingfoods rather than fast-digesting foods. Slow digesting foods last up to 8 hours, while fast-digesting foods last for only 3 to 4 hours. • Slow-digesting foods are foods that contain grains and seeds like barley, wheat, oats, millet, semolina, beans, lentils, whole meal flour, unpolished rice, etc. (called complex carbohydrates). • Fast-burning foods are foods that contain sugar, white flour, etc. (called refined carbohydrates). • Fiber-containing foods are brancontaining foods, whole wheat, grains and seeds, vegetables like green beans, peas, sem (papry), marrow, corn, spinach, and other herbs like methie (fenugreek seeds), the leaves of beet root (ironrich), fruit with skin, dried fruit especially dried apricots, figs and prunes, almonds, etc. The foods eaten should be well-balanced, containing foods from each food
group, i.e. fruits, vegetables, meat/ chicken/fish, bread/cereals and dairy products. Fried foods are unhealthy and should be limited. They cause indigestion, heart-burn, and weight problems. Avoid • Fried and fatty foods. • Foods containing too much sugar. • Over-eating especially at suhur (the meal before beginning the fast). • Too much tea at suhur. Tea makes you pass more urine taking with it valuable mineral salts that your body would need during the day. • Smoking cigarettes. If you cannot give up smoking, cut down gradually starting a few weeks before Ramadan. Smoking is unhealthy and one should stop completely. Eat • Complex carbohydrates at suhur so that the food lasts longer making you less hungry. • Haleem (traditional Indian wheat porridge) or Couscous are an excellent source of protein and is a slowburning food. • Dates are excellent source of sugar, fiber, carbohydrates, potassium and magnesium. • Almonds are rich in protein and fiber with less fat. • Bananas are a good source of potassium, magnesium and carbohydrates. Drink As much water or fruit juices as possible between Iftar (breakfast) and bedtime so that your body may adjust fluid levels in time. Constipation Constipation can cause piles (hem-
orrhoids), fissures (painful cracks in anal canal) and indigestion with a bloated feeling. Causes: Too much refined foods, too little water and not enough fiber in the diet. Remedy: Avoid excessive refined foods, increase water intake, use bran in baking, whole wheat flour when making bread. Indigestion and wind Causes: Over-eating. Too much fried and fatty foods, spicy foods, and foods that produce wind e.g. eggs, cabbage, lentils, carbonated drinks also produce gas. Remedy: Do not over-eat, drink fruit juices or better still drink water and avoid fried foods. Lethargy (‘low blood pressure’) Excessive sweating, weakness, tiredness, lack of energy, dizziness, especially on getting up from sitting position, pale appearance and feeling faint are symptoms associated with “low blood pressure”. This tends to occur towards the afternoon. Causes: Too little fluid intake, decreased salt intake. Remedy: Keep cool, increase fluid and salt intake. Caution: Low blood pressure should be confirmed by taking a blood pressure reading when symptoms are present. Persons with high blood pressure may need their medication adjusted during Ramadan. They should consult their doctor. Headache Causes: Caffeine and tobacco-withdrawal, doing too much in one day, lack of sleep, hunger usually occur as the day goes by and worsens at
the end of the day. When associated with “low blood pressure”, the headache can be quite severe and can also cause nausea before Iftar. Remedy: Cut down caffeine and tobacco slowly starting a week or two before Ramadan. Herbal and caffeine-free teas may be substituted. Reorganize your schedule during the Ramadan so as to have adequate sleep. Low blood sugar Weakness, dizziness, tiredness, poor concentration, perspiring easily, feeling shaky (tremor), unable to perform physical activities, headache, palpitations are symptoms of low blood sugar. Causes in non-diabetics: Having too much sugar i.e. refined carbohydrates especially at suhur. The body produces too much insulin causing the blood glucose to drop. Remedy: Eat something at suhur and limit sugar-containing foods and drinks. Caution: Diabetics may need to adjust their medication in Ramadan, consult your doctor. Muscle cramps Causes: Inadequate intake of calcium, magnesium and potassium foods. Remedy: Eat foods rich in the above minerals e.g. vegetables, fruit, dairy products, meat and dates. Caution: Those on high blood pressure medication and with kidney stone problems should consult their doctor. Peptic ulcers, heart burn, gastritis and hiatus hernia Increased acid levels in the empty stomach in Ramadan aggravate the
above conditions. It presents as a burning feeling in the stomach area under the ribs and can extend up to the throat. Spicy foods, coffee, and carbonated drinks worsen these conditions. Medications are available to control acid levels in the stomach. People with proven peptic ulcers and hiatus hernia should consult their doctor well before Ramadan. Kidney stones Kidney stones may occur in people who have less liquids to drink. Therefore, it is essential to drink extra liquids so as to prevent stone formation. Joint pains Causes: During Ramadan, when extra salah (prayers) are performed the pressure on the knee joints increases. In the elderly and those with arthritis this may result in pain, stiffness, swelling and discomfort. Remedy: Lose weight so that the knees do not have to carry any extra load. Exercise the lower limbs before Ramadan so that they can be prepared for the additional strain. Being physically fit allows greater fulfillment, thus enabling one to be able to perform salah with ease. Dr. Farouk Haffejee, Islamic Medical Association of South Africa.

SC orders to hold presidential poll on July 30; ECP complies
Supreme Court Wednesday ordered Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold presidential election on July 30, as ECP later left it up to SC to decide the date for holding election. The apex court was hearing the petition of Raja Zafrul Huque praying SC to direct the ECP to hold the upcoming presidential elec-
tion on July 30 instead of August 6 as announced by ECP. During the hearing, the Attorney General when asked by CJ his opinion on the issue said that there was no constitutional bar in holding presidential election on July 30 and Public Representation Act was no obstruction in the way of presidential election. Following federation’s endorsement of Raja Zafrul Huque’s plea, the Chief Justice had asked ECP D.G to get directive from highups and report by 11.00 A.M. Thereafter, ECP informed the court that whatever decision taken by the court would be acceptable to them and they would manage to hold the presidential election on the date ordered by the SC.

During the hearing, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry asked the Attorney General whether there existed any constitutional hurdle for rescheduling the election. The Attorney General confirmed that there exists no constitutional bar in holding the presidential election on July 30th and Public Representation Act has no obstruction in the way of presidential election. The Chief Justice in his remarks said that prima facie there was no bar in holding the presidential election on July 30th and added that the ECP should facilitate. ECP in the apex court took the stance that it needed time for making arrangements for holding the election.

He further said that violation of human rights was going on in Bangladesh, while democracy in Egypt has also been derailed. Liaquat Baloch also called for having a candidate from Balochistan to contest the presidential election. Source: Geo News reported

What’s Next: Turning Retirement into a Fulfilling Re-Engagement By Isabelle St-Jean, RSW, ACC Demographic statistics for many professionals in North America reveal that easily more than 40 per cent of today’s accountants, lawyers, and physicians are over the age of 50. Most of these professionals are expected to retire over the next five to fifteen years. Being part of the boomer generation, they can look forward to living 20 to 30 years longer than their great-grandparents. Boomers are also unlikely to settle for a life of leisure in retirement – they would rather be involved, make meaningful contributions and launch into a dynamic and fulfilling re-engagement with the world around them. This article discusses common themes of happiness in the second half of life along with success factors and transitional stages of retirement. Three dimensions of happiness in retirement years Years of research on happiness tell us that adopting an overarching positive attitude is the foundation of contentment through all stages of adult life. In the second half, particularly, we are wise to adopt a resilient mindset that focuses on abilities more than decline and on the simple sources
of joy within one’s reach. We now understand that a successful retirement results from many factors, including identifying a significant purpose, defining one’s personal identity as distinct from one’s professional role, and feeling a sense of belonging and connection to others. Along with these factors, three types of activities ideally converge to generate happiness beyond the workplace. In What Color is Your Parachute? - for Retirement, authors Richard Bolles and John Nelson identify these as pleasurable, engaging or meaningful activities. Pleasurable activities include leisure and things we do for sheer enjoyment. Engaging activities enable us to achieve a sense of flow by drawing on our abilities while providing a challenge. These can include sports or a new hobby that involves learning and developing new skills. When we feel captivated by what we are doing and time flies by, we are engaged. Meaningful activities lead people to feel that their life really matters because they are part of something larger and worthwhile. This happens when retirees enjoy contributing their knowledge
and experience through activities such as mentoring or volunteering for a cause or organization they really care about.
Navigating the stages of retirement This three-pronged understanding of happiness can help preretiring professionals design their own satisfying and balanced life. If you are among those approaching retirement, it would be wise to identify which activities you currently enjoy in each of the three categories mentioned above. In the pre-retirement stage, readiness should be assessed while activities are being considered, succession planning is well underway, and friendships may be renewed, all of which lend more ease into the transition ahead. Taking charge of your readiness on a personal level requires open communication and collaboration with your significant other. Planning for shared goals and projects – along with making time for some autonomous activities – could serve your own best interests as well as the interests of your relationship and your partner. This kind of balance is important to counteract the stress of retirement; research indicates
that working full-time is usually less stressful on marital relations than the stress of adjusting to retirement as a couple. Typically, the first 6 to 18 months of retirement are characterized by a sense of euphoria and a newfound freedom from the constraints of work. During this first stage, retirees often travel, catch up with their fitness needs and feel as if they have unlimited time at their disposal. Indeed, in retirement, time and energy can be the equivalent of a new form of currency that’s at least equally as important as money. But as the months go by, there may be a sudden realization that time is moving and yet nothing of real substance is being accomplished. It becomes imperative, then, to refocus on some specific goals, perhaps engaging in compelling projects and infusing at least some of our precious time with purposeful intentions and actions. As the initial honeymoon stage subsides, some retirees feel the urge to make time to identify what projects or goals could yield a sense of purpose at the center of their live. With the workplace no longer providing a daily structure around which
everything else is organized, the onus is on each person to manage and invest their time and energy in fulfilling ways. Sometimes, the process of integrating our past workplace accomplishments and identifying what gave us most joy, can give rise to new insights pointing to the seeds of a new purpose. This second stage may include moments of angst or emptiness. At this time, it’s advisable to be surrounded by supportive friends and relatives to prevent social isolation. And remember that some quiet time may be very helpful in identifying an emerging calling. Just as a bulb must be planted in the fall for it to blossom in the spring, time for reflection can serve to actively incubate a new sense of purpose or direction. As you hopefully ease into the third stage of turning retirement into re-engagement, you will have found a compelling reason to get up in the morning with enthusiasm. Striving for a balance between change and stability while being involved in a blend of pleasurable, engaging and meaningful activities will help to generate contentment through those precious years of joyful and meaningful re-engagement. In turn, this happiness will trigger a ripple effect that will be part of your future legacy generating the deep satisfaction of a life fully utilized and well lived.

Canucks to retire Pavel Bure’s No. 10 The Vancouver Canucks announced Tuesday night what had been hinted at last spring: they will retire Pavel Bure’s No. 10 jersey and hang it next season from the rafters at Rogers Arena. Bure joins former captains Stan Smyl, Trevor Linden and Markus Naslund in the elite group that have had their jersey numbers retired. No actual date was given for the ceremony. The groundwork for the jersey retirement was laid last April 4 when Bure made a surprise visit to Vancouver, did some promotional work and then received a standing ovation later that night when he attended the Canucks’Edmonton Oilers’ game at Rogers Arena. “It’s a huge honour,” Bure told reporters Tuesday night after appearing at a Canuck season-ticket holder’s event. “I’m just really proud and happy to be next to Stan Smyl, who I just saw today.
We were talking about how we started together (in 1991), me as a player and he was starting as assistant coach. It just brings lots of good memories to be next to those great guys.” Bure played seven seasons for the Canucks, was NHL rookie of the year in 1991-92, scored 60 goals twice and then 51 in his final season with the team. However, his relationship with management had soured and he withheld services to start the 1998-99 campaign to back a trade demand. He still had one year left on his contract. He was eventually dealt to the Florida Panthers on Jan. 17, 1999, in a blockbuster trade that involved seven players and two draft picks. Asked if he was surprised it took this long for the Canucks to retire his jersey, Bure deftly stickhandled around the question, just as he did to his many opponents on the
ice. “I’m just happy with what I have now,” he replied. “I’m happy and really proud. I’m thrilled.” Bure, now 42, said his memories in Vancouver were too numerous to list when asked to name just three. “I have great memories but it’s really hard to choose only three,” he responded. “There were so many of them. My first game, my first goal, and obviously in 1994 when we went to the final. I can keep going and going so it would take a long time.” Canuck GM Mike Gillis was Bure’s agent for the latter portion of his career and, not surprisingly, heartily endorsed the jersey retirement. “I don’t think there is anybody as deserving to be honoured in Vancouver for what he did for this organization and for what he did to make this team relevant,” Gillis said. FIFA member: World Cup in Qatar a “blatant mistake”
Former German football federation president Theo Zwanziger claimed on Wednesday that awarding the 2022 World Cup to Qatar was a “blatant mistake” and that even moving it to avoid searing summer temperatures wouldn’t be ideal. Zwanziger told SportBild on Wednesday that a suggestion by FIFA President Sepp Blatter to play the tournament in winter would seriously affect the European leagues and threaten the “unity of German football.” He added that German fans would end up watching the World Cup at “public viewing events on ice-skates in minus temperatures.” Blatter plans to ask FIFA’s executive committee, of which Zwanziger is a member since June, 2011, to consider the switch going back on his previous position of insisting on a summer
tournament. Qatar regularly has temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) during summer. “If this World Cup is to become a party for the people, you can’t play football in the summer,” Blatter said. “You can cool down the stadiums but you can’t cool down the whole country.” Zwanziger said Blatter’s U-turn showed that most of the executive committee had voted “against a fair awarding procedure” in giving the World Cup to Qatar in 2010. The 68-year-old former tax inspector said that rather than rescheduling the tournament, it should be awarded to another country. “If the decision at the time was really wrong you have to cancel it and avoid burdens on those previously uninvolved,” Zwanziger said. Steady Misbah steers 3-1 triumph
With his fourth half-century in five games this series, the world’s leading ODI run-getter of 2013 shepherded his volatile band of batsmen home in another tricky chase. Misbah-ul-Haq battled falling wickets at the other end, a charged up Tino Best, and a rain interruption as late as the 98th over of the game to take Pakistan to their third successive away bilateral series win over West Indies. Yet again this series, Umar Akmal was called upon to overcome the asking-rate towards the end, and once more, he did not disappoint, delivering the series to Pakistan with a 3-1 margin. Misbah formed partnerships with Ahmed Shehzad, Haris Sohail and Akmal before falling in the last over trying to slog the winning hit, with the scores tied. He had already ensured Pakistan had won the series; a tie would have meant the margin would have been 2-1. When Sohail became the latest profligate Pakistan batsman to fall, chasing a wide Best delivery, Pakistan needed 83 from 12 overs. Best, having conceded 25 off his first three overs, was in the mood for a furious comeback. Pinging down bouncers in the mid-140s, he
smacked one into Misbah’s fingers. While the storm was being weathered by the captain, Akmal did his act at the other end. The inexperienced Jason Holder was taken for three successive fours in the next over, the 41st, the second of those coming off a poor effort at fine leg from Marlon Samuels. It wasn’t the first time West Indies had messed up in the field today, and it wasn’t to be the last. Akmal steered a short ball to the fine third man rope next ball. Holder cracked further under pressure, four leg-byes resulting off Misbah’s pad down the leg side off the last ball of the over. Misbah managed a four off an inside edge to Sunil Narine next over and held his nerve to reverse-sweep the offspinner for four more. Then arrived the moment which once again highlighted what a farce a watered-down DRS has been in this series, in the absence of HotSpot. West Indies were sure Misbah had gloved a Best bouncer to the keeper down leg, the on-field umpire did not agree, and the third umpire had too much guesswork to do with only replays and sound as tools. Misbah was on 49 then, and Pakistan would have
needed 53 of 46 had he been given. Darren Bravo had been given caught-behind on referral on the basis of sound earlier and West Indies had a right to expect consistency. Though Best predictably lost his temper, West Indies were not giving in. Dwayne Bravo, who often disappears for plenty at the death, delivered two tight overs. But Akmal found the big stroke when Pakistan sorely needed it. Narine was cut for four, Best was carted over mid-off for six. A top-edge flew over the keeper for four more, but even as clouds swept in over the stadium, Akmal holed out to mid-off for 37 off 28. A 20-minute break followed but Pakistan were ahead on D/L by five runs, and safe in the knowledge that the series was theirs, in case no further play was possible. Sunshine followed soon, though, and Shahid Afridi weighed in at the hit end of the hit-or-miss scale. Bravo was pulled for six over deep midwicket and punched past point for four. Game over? Not yet. Misbah hit Holder to short midwicket second ball of the final over, and Saeed Ajmal took three deliveries to get bat on ball. Had the throw from mid-on hit, it
would have gone down to the final ball. It didn’t, and Afridi and Ajmal hugged, as did their team-mates in the Pakistan dressing room. Credit for the win also went to Shehzad, who made his first substantial score of the series, and guided Pakistan’s chase amid tight bowling from Narine and Darren Sammy. The pitch eased out further in the second innings. Cutting and pulling without trouble, Nasir Jamshed and Shehzad brought up Pakistan’s first 50-run
opening stand in 17 innings, excluding a game against Scotland. Trust Pakistan to blow such a rare promising start. Jamshed was stranded for the second game running, Shehzad taking a few steps and stopping this time, after Mohammad Hafeez in the previous game. Hafeez himself got a start and then had a heave at Sammy. However, Shehzad had Misbah to steady things. Source: Cricinfo

A day with Amina Ansari
By Maheen Nusrat I have now spent the last few months getting to know Amina and she is almost always full of surprises. She is not only a talented artist, but has an interesting personality too. Painting maybe her bread and butter, but she has other artistic talents like writing, poetry, cinematography, photography and travelling to keep her sane. She’s a well-rounded personality who is bubbly, forever hopeful and joyful. Her dedication to her work shows through each and every one of her brush strokes and within the detail with which she paints her subjects. Sometimes, I think she is quiet mad because you have to be insane or insanely talented to produce such high quality work. Her painting tribute to Kate was also testament to her insanity and talent especially after a senior artist like Paul Emsley received so much criticism, you have to be crazy brave to take on the status-quo. The end result of the Duchess portrait is nothing short of pure talent and great work. With the arrival of the Royal baby, I can’t help but feel as if Kate’s painting has been breathed a new life. Amina’s portrait of Kate can be seen as being historic as it captures the prebirth Kate. I finally got a chance to sit with Amina and ask her some questions about her life, her work and her passions. It was an interesting afternoon of fun and laughter and a rare insight into the life of the Artist. Q1: Were you tuned in to the TV and awaiting the Royal baby’s birth like others? A1: There was thundering and Monsoon at 6am, when the news was announced of Kate’s labour and she was at the Hospital, what a start and way to regard the day of Royal baby boy in both nature and for telegenic appeal…. A history in making…. Q2: how does the birth of the new royal baby affect you or your work? What are your feelings on this day? A2: I cannot deny one bit that it was a beautiful moment..... Anyone who has a heart will agree....I was fortunate to witness a much celebrated year for UK as well as the new additions to the history of this culture which brings the community together and gives strength to the common. This helps community grow spiritually. Quite a Memento to see the royal baby wielding such power from the very time of his birth. His life path will be different because of the status he enjoys, but I see it as encouragement and I look at this and think how I can make the most of my own power, in order to take positive charge on how the future unfolds both personally and professionally, and of course the rest with fate. Q3: Is there something you would want to do for the new Royal Family-Would you do a tribute to them? A3: It is a big thing to ask, and being an Artist to create a new Royal Family portrait that becomes a philosophy itself is a dream. Q4: What possessed you to paint Kate especially after the negative criticism from the media of a seasoned artist like Mr. Emsley? A4: I have painted the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh. Both these portraits were really well-received by the Queen and now at Windsor Castle’s collection. The thank you letter from her Majesty was also very encouraging. When Paul’s painting came out that was an urge to paint her on my version and I had a strong feeling that this painting would make Kate very happy. Q5: Have you ever met Kate yourself? A5: No, I have never met Kate. That is my gift. I feel vibes before I even meet people. I painted Kate using ideas from magazines and of course my own imagination. Q6: How do you see Kate and how do
you think you represented that in your painting? A6: Kate is a cosmopolitan lady, hence the use of varied colours that travel around her as a personality, but as a royal, she is also very reserved and sophisticated, hence the use of Black around her. Red is my favourite colour, and I have used it in her portrait to represent her bold and positive energy. Q7: I can’t peel my eyes of her smile, what made you capture her smile the way you did? A7: The smile is infamous. She is a natural at smiling. She knows who she is. She is a woman of her world. People smile, but that is not their identity. Her smile is a celebrated sign of how she knows herself. Many people will smile, but are not content within. Kate is grounded, connected with people yet she has her own landmark. In many ways, I felt that I could connect and relate to Kate. I also used night colours to represent her because I feel that perhaps Kate is a night person like me. Q8: Tell me how you started painting ? A8: That’s a million dollar question….. Considering, it was an elevated railway towards painting. But in short, it was from lily-white to thrashing my mother’s gift of basic rainbow colours, to an ‘assumed reincarnation’, by fleeing mainstream classes as I never considered Art as a direction in career. I was fortunate to receive a letter that hangs in my living room by Master Artist Gulshan Gulgee foretelling my future in painting, to an overwhelming fever of opportunities on my doorstep starting from my academic days, as it was a matter of proving ground with my abilities since my childhood–However, state of the Art today is a different story, as I now swallow the ‘world’ around me, be it science, history, business, film industry or medicines and many moreit structures the knowledge of Art at the end of day. Art is way of life that structures the knowledge of Art at the end of day. Art is way of life. The reversed psychology of how people react unconsciously, could it be it as colour vision or colour-blind person witin their own environment as an example. Google on how our eye-pupils perform in darkness and light that play with our mindset. Therefore, this is the philosophy I deliver in paintings fluently today as a mainstream career, rather than assuming that Art is a separate and lonely lawn. Q9: Tell me a bit about your family, how many siblings you have and do they do Art like you? A9: My mother, Durdana Ansari received the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for the Charity, Pearl Education Foundation in the UK, she used to be engrossed in doing sketches of me since nursery days and I often watched her but hardly prevailed to follow up the same passion she had. Samad, my brother is a lawyer and always brings the warm fuzzies from his talented dancing. Zehra, my sister is a CIPD qualified in Human Resources and loves puzzling with creating 3D objects. Nazer, last but not least is my youngest brother in his final year for GCSEs and he got the euphoria of keeping loved ones together with his sense of humour. Q10: Being the eldest, did you grow up feeling you had a lot of pressure to be the best example for your siblings? A10: As many siblings out there, we have had the typical ‘cats and dogs’ rivalry. My parents taught us to be equal with respect as well as instilled the value of addressing me in the traditional ‘Baji’, and to be understanding and loving for family and the practicality of being there for each other from such a tender age. We learnt the receptive logic behind our strengths and weaknesses, that in order to emerge from a negative situation positively, and with-
out beating each other down or being condescending as a permanent effect. I think this is a main gift that our parents have given us, as in drawing up to be a surviving featherhead. I am lucky to have wonderful support from my siblings for life. Q11: What is your education background in painting? Have you had any formal training? A11: I went to two Art Schools from The London Institute, Foundation Course at Central Saint Martin’s and BA Book Arts & Crafts at London College of Printing. It was in the ‘field of Art’, that enthralled me to expand my horizon, where I ended in Film & Video that was my most relished idolization during this period. I was crawling under benches and following people with my camera from glass to glass with strangers at an Aquarium. Imagine their reactions! Joining National College of Arts, Lahore, Pakistan turned out to be my king-sized rebound and this was the climax for my visual literacy. Albeit, skirting as a self-taught Artist has always been the ingredient without having a scene in Art. Bridging gaps between the East and West in Art has always been my seedbed. Q12: What is your inspiration to paint? Do you get an itch or, is there a heart break story that you express through painting or you were born naturally talented? A5: Gifted. Telepathy from miles away where I’ve never encountered, for example I painted Afghan Refugees and my mother questioned how it was possible for me to capture their true synergy. Only towards completion I ‘uncloak’ my eyes of what I’ve really created-and I have done this from teenage days. Bright colours are my lifeblood to apply on canvases with a motive. Q 13: What are your future plans? Have you any painting you are working on right now? A13: I believe in moving to another zone from time to time as an appetite to grow in Art mentally and spiritually, as there is always a new journey to be unfolded and elaborated on canvases. Be it a concept or skill. Work in progress and I have an idea that I want to continue. There is always merging into mainstream on so many levels and each gate-pass always offer you bigger opportunity to absorb and scream a cry onto your creation. It is always a yen for me as an Artist to share my work further and I always appreciate everyone’s love and appreciation towards my work. Carpe Diem and time shall reap. Q14: Okay, now aside from painting— there is something about you that many people may not know- There’s also another side to you? Tell us about that . A14: A side or many? (she laughs). I cycled 10 miles every day downhill and uphill on a mountain bike, be it rain, snow or sun, and I was undercover with shocking orange puffed jackets, bright green helmet and gold flashed sunglasses and anyone would have mistook me for a male. The nature makes you want to dance with your soul! Okay coming to a point, the driving force is Martial Arts Karate, yes I’m a black belt since the age of nine years old….. Q16: So how did u get into Marial arts? A16: My mother’s passion and expertise for Sound as she sings ghazals beautifully, as well as being in the media for many years, she wanted her own daughter to overcome her shyness and communicate with the world whereas I was reluctant and stubborn to do so. She sent me to Piano, Khathak, Tennis, Drama Club and many more but with fail it only lasted one lesson each as I would throw tantrums. Martial Arts Karate was another idea where I couldn’t escape by Masters. Believe it or not, it gave me inner peace as I practiced Mar-
tial Arts Karate philosophy, harmony and defense rather than attack. It then became an Art form with cat senses at my end and with grace, I was able to carry strength within me as 100% psyche upwards and onwards and never look back…. Even then, I became passionate in dancing, music and sports automatically which she put as tester in the first place. Ironic isn’t it? This is another reason for my energy transferred when using paint brushes…. Q17: Who do you attribute your success to? Q17: Definitely commended efforts by my mother, who always stomachs all the difficulties and showers happiness that her daughters exhibit. Attributing my success to her is something words cannot even gloss over. Follow on; I attribute my every hiccup and high since childhood, and all different walks of life, simply because they are what groomed me today. Q18: What else does Amina like to do outside of painting that keeps you grounded? A18: Music and Jogging allows me to become one with Nature and I love travelling to keep my sanity. Q19: So, do you only paint celebrities or can ordinary people commission you?-what is the process to order? A19: I paint all walks of life, the versatility of the world to open doors is in both ways- the Artist and the subject. It is usually in 30% advanced payment for materials as full payment upon completion. This depends on the size and mediums as well as sources, discussed and agreed with the client. I can be contacted by email or sms or phone call with my PA. My website has all my details at www.aminaart.org Q20: What has been an interesting experience in painting? Something sad, funny, unique, or memorable? A20: At National College of Arts, I was known as perfectionist and all my materials in order and neatness. One teacher, originally from Lahore, but studied in Slade school of Arts in UK, mocked me as a British and thought I wouldn’t survive. She was very annoyed by my perfectionism and threw one of my wet canvases into the floor and spilled a bit of tea. I was gob smacked and she said ‘now Amina, you fix it, when you are not flexible, there’s no room to think outside the box or grow with passion!!!’ , that was the day when I let go off myself and re-invented myself and ideas on every canvas without any restriction. I learned that there’s always more room for surprises and to build a new relationship each time…. I surprised my teachers and they respect me for that now! Q22: You are a Pakistani-British girl, born and raised in Britain, formal training in Pakistan, -do you consider yourself primarily Pakistani or British? Do you see any conflict in the two identities or being British and Pakistani are perfectly cohesive identities and if not how do you reconcile your identity? How does that translate into your Art? A22: Where can I start? My ancestors are from Delhi/Lucknow, India, so I’ve gathered of my heritage from both India and Pakistan before partition with the help of my parents’ knowledge and travelled there every year to be fed with first-hand culture, whereas in Britain I was enlightened with the British culture. Therefore, from that aspect I always related to East and West and it’s
always been a fusion in my mindset and how to apply myself in two different environments. We have to remember that it is unfair to compare a ‘developed’ country to a ‘third-world’ country, whereas it is a breakthrough when it comes to my Art. UK has the privilege and facility of Museums, Galleries and first hand materials that you can visit, in Pakistan, there is none of that whatsoever, but the use of internet and imagination. Art shops in UK have materials ready to be bought with no emotion attached initially, on the contrary in Pakistan, they make things from scratch and all hand-made canvases, where you build connections with materials you use and develop from scratch. It is all man-made and flexibility of how you apply in your Art. With all special needs available in UK, we work around routine and in ‘boxed’ environment as in Pakistan, after my continuous hiatus from childhood from painting, it was a milestone for me to nurture them for my requirements as well as being turned upside down by their bandwagon! Their hunger for knowledge and awareness made me feel that I had to grow up fast in Pakistan in order to keep up with others. We finally got there at the end and it was an eye-opening experience and a break-through where we have the poor, the average, the rich, highly educated and the famous all under one roof in a small community, which is not very common in the UK at any Art institute. I feel my own Asian people do not make the effort to visit prestigious Art venues especially when they are free of charge. There is a lack of that value for art sometimes in Asian culture here in UK, but if you look at Pakistan, there are so many globally emerging artists. The deepest involvement of the culture there, never leaves you alone whereas in UK, you work at your own pace at all times, and less speed or will to grow as you go on because we are so used to having all things covered here. India is also highly Art valued and I always stay in touch there as well. So I consider myself as ‘British Asian’ as an outsider or well-inept in both east and west and I think this perfectly translates the language in my Art today. My vision is broadened with those who have arms wide open to the world and understanding of their own cornerstones, and to enlighten the person next to me, as I feel honoured to taste the reality of variety in their own rights. Q23: You seem very spiritual—do you feel your art helps you grow in your spirituality? Spirituality, I believe are gifted by birth but I the think Sufism in Lahore opened more doors, emphasised my skills and colours onto the creations. A friend from Delhi asked me to discover his family heritage in Lahore before partition, and I had the honour of interviewing a man who changed the name of the road after Mela Ram. You would not believe, from Art School teachers and students to Government Archives to Old Wall street and Anarkali bookshops became my asset for my research. It was an urge to convey the ‘journey ‘of my spiritualism onto 10 feet of canvas. Coordinating with India and Pakistan history, gave me the respect between people I have encountered rather than falling into stereotypes as they portray in the media. An experience I will never forget. Q24: Last question: 100 years from now, what would be Amina Art Ansari’s legacy and what would you liked to be remembered for in history? A24: Artist who bridges the gap in Art with holy colours applied and those globally reflected in the most happiest and positive manner – a therapy to the soul, heart and mind. Moreover, I’ve yet to make a painting to make a history. Thank you Amina. I wish you the best in all your future endeavours.
