WINS EU HUMAN RIGHTS PRIZE Yousafzai was chosen by a vote among the heads of all the political groups in the 750-member EU parliament. “She is an icon of courage for all teenagers who dare to pursue their aspirations and, like a candle, she lights a path out of darkness,” said Joseph Daul, chairman of the centre-right European People’s Party in the European Parliament. Yousafzai was also nominated for 2013 Nobel peace prize and was expected to win the award on October 11.

Instead, the prize went to Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. However, The Nobel committee chairman, Thorbjoern Jagland, hinted that a Nobel moment may still come for her. He said: “She is an outstanding woman and I think she has a bright future and she will probably be a nominee next year or the year after that.”

Musharraf rearrested over Lal Masjid operation

Pakistan’s former military ruler General (retd) Pervez Musharraf was rearrested in Lal Masjid (Red Mosque) killing case hours after submitting surety bonds in the Supreme Court on Thursday. The rearrest came after he had been granted bail in three other cases and his lawyer said on Wednesday he was cleared to leave the country. Assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, death of Baloch nationalist leader Nawab Akbar Bugti and detention of deposed Supreme Court judges were the other three major cases registered against the former military strongman. “We have put General Musharraf under house arrest in a case involving a military operation on an Islamabad mosque,” Muhammad Rizwan, a senior official of the Islamabad police told reporters.

Local court on approved a plea seeking 14-day judicial remand, Rizwan added, after visiting Musharraf’s plush

villa at the edge of Islamabad, which has been declared a sub jail. A complaint against Musharraf in the Lal Masjid case was registered last month on the orders of a judge. On Wednesday, Musharraf was granted bail in the case of the death of Baloch nationalist leader Nawab Akbar Bugti after the apex court granted his appeal against rejection of a similar plea by the Balochistan High Court. The apex court had asked the former army strongman to submit two surety bonds of Rs 1 million each to the Supreme Court Registrar. A spokesman of Musharraf’s All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) party confirmed the arrest saying they will now apply for bail in the latest case. “Yes, Police have officially arrested General Musharraf and put him under house arrest. We will file his bail application soon,” Muhammad Amjad, secretary general of the APML told AFP. The Lal Masjid operation was a 2007 government crackdown on the controversial pro-Taliban mosque in Islamabad, which ended in a bloody eight-day siege killing at least 58 Pakistani troops and seminary students. The operation followed a week-long standoff between the mosque’s supporters and security forces. A number of witnesses in their statements had alleged that Musharraf, then president of Pakistan, was responsible for the action. Musharraf was forced out of office after trying and failing to fire the country’s chief justice. The former president and head of the army went into exile in 2008 but returned earlier this year in an abortive attempt to launch a political career – Reuters/AFP/Dawn.com

Provinces asked to fight terrorists with iron hand

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said a special law was being enacted to deal with cases related to terrorism and asked the provinces to take strict and effective measures to eliminate this menace. Talking to members of families affected by the recent Qisa Khwani Bazaar bomb explosion and later in his talk with reporters at the Governor House on Thursday, he said the proposed law, which would effectively tackle cases of terrorism in the court of law, was ready. The culprits involved in terrorism would not escape the clutches of law, he added. Mr Sharif said the proposed law would remove lacunas from existing laws, which helped the accused get bail because of lack of evidence or a weak case prepared by the prosecution. He said in a country where security measures were weak extraordinary laws and decisions had to be taken to put things on the right track. The government would not show any weakness in elimination of terrorism and would go the distance to curb this menace once and for all, he added. He said the targeted operation in Karachi was yielding positive results and expressed the hope that it would show more good results. The prime minister said his government had decided to hold talks with militants in order to avoid more bloodshed in the

country. He said the government was serious in taking forward the peace process and was sincere to exercise the option of negotiation for which it had been mandated by an all-party conference. He deplored that the previous regimes did not take the matter of terrorism seriously and as such the present government was confronted with this gigantic problem soon after coming to power. Had this problem been taken seriously by previous governments, the situation would not have gone intractable today, he said. “We have laid hands to settle this problem and invited suggestions from all stakeholders to arrest this issue once and for all.” About the meeting he presided over on law and order earlier, the prime minister said setting up of an anti-terrorism force was the need of the hour and asked the provinces to take steps in this direction. He said the meeting stressed the need to raise a special counter-terrorism force to effectively tackle the menace of terrorism along with a strong intelligence network. He said the country had been facing the problem of terrorism for the past 20 years, but it had not been taken seriously. “We do not have a trained force to combat the menace of terrorism,” he said and added that the time had come to raise the special counter-terrorism force. Mr Sharif said the provinces had to take emergency measures to defeat terrorism. He said progress could not be achieved without a stable economy and it required resolving the crises of energy and terrorism. He said his government had cleared the circular debt of Rs500 billion in difficult circumstances and gave an inclusive energy Continued on pg 4 p o l i c y

4 I N T E R N A T I O N A L Hotter-than-ever climate can US withholds military aid to Egypt be expected by 2047: study Dhul Hajjah 10, 1434 H October 15, 2013

Starting in about a decade, Kingston, Jamaica, will probably be off-the-charts hot -- permanently. Other places will soon follow. Singapore in 2028. Mexico City in 2031. Cairo in 2036. Phoenix and Honolulu in 2043. And eventually the whole world in 2047. A new study on global warming pinpoints the probable dates for when cities and ecosystems around the world will regularly experience hotter environments the likes of which they have never seen before. And for dozens of cities, mostly in the tropics, those dates are a generation or less away. “This paper is both innovative and sobering,” said Oregon State University professor Jane Lubchenco, former head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, who was not involved in the study. To arrive at their projections, the researchers used weather observations, computer models and other data to calculate the point at which every year from then on will be warmer than the hottest year ever recorded over the last 150 years. For example, the world as a whole had its hottest year on record in 2005. The new study, published Wednesday in the journal Nature, says that by the year 2047, every year that follows will probably be hotter than that record-setting scorcher. Eventually, the coldest

year in a particular city or region will be hotter than the hottest year in its past. Study author Camilo Mora and his colleagues said they hope this new way of looking at climate change will spur governments to do something before it is too late. “Now is the time to act,” said another study coauthor, Ryan Longman. Mora, a biological geographer at the University of Hawaii, and colleagues ran simulations from 39 different computer models and looked at hundreds of thousands of species, maps and data points to ask when places will have “an environment like we had never seen before.” The 2047 date for the whole world is based on continually increasing emissions of greenhouse gases from the burning of coal, oil and natural gases. If the world manages to reduce its emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases, that would be pushed to as late as 2069, according to Mora. But for now, Mora said, the world is rushing toward the 2047 date. “One can think of this year as a kind of threshold into a hot new world from which one never goes back,” said Carnegie Institution climate scientist Chris Field, who was not part of the study. “This is really dramatic.” Mora forecasts that the unprecedented heat starts in 2020 with Manokwa, Indonesia. Then Kingston, Jamaica. Within the next two decades, 59 cities will be living in what is essentially a new climate, including Singapore, Havana, Kuala Lumpur and Mexico City. By 2043, 147 cities -- more than half of those

studied -- will have shifted to a hotter temperature regime that is beyond historical records. The first U.S. cities to feel that would be Honolulu and Phoenix, followed by San Diego and Orlando, Florida, in 2046. New York and Washington will get new climates around 2047, with Los Angeles, Detroit, Houston, Chicago, Seattle, Austin and Dallas a bit later. Mora calculated that the last of the 265 cities to move into their new climate will be Anchorage, Alaska -- in 2071. There’s a five-year margin of error on the estimates. Unlike previous research, the study highlights the tropics more than the polar regions. In the tropics, temperatures don’t vary much, so a small increase can have large effects on ecosystems, he said. A 3-degree change is not much to polar regions but is dramatic in the tropics, which hold most of the Earth’s biodiversity, he said. The Mora team found that by one measurement -- ocean acidity -Earth has already crossed the threshold into an entirely new regime. That happened in about 2008, with every year since then more acidic than the old record, according to study co-author Abby Frazier. Of the species studied, coral reefs will be the first stuck in a new climate -around 2030 -- and are most vulnerable to climate change, Mora said. Pennsylvania State University climate scientist Michael Mann said the research “may be actually presenting an overly rosy scenario when it comes to how close we are to passing the threshold for dangerous climate impacts.” “By some measures, we are already there,” he said. Chemical watchdog: Syria goal can be reached

The head of the world’s chemical weapons watchdog said on Wednesday that the group’s timeline in Syria “is extremely tight,” but denied that the deadlines, including the destruction of all production facilities by November 1, were unrealistic. “If we can ensure cooperation by all parties, and if some temporary ceasefires could be established in order to permit our experts to work in a permissive environment, I think the targets could be reached,” Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) head Ahmet Uzumcu told journalists in The Hague on Wednesday. Uzumcu said that Syrian officials had been “quite cooperative” in the early stages of the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal. Syria submitted a declaration of its chemical weapons arsenal to the OPCW last month, but the details have not been disclosed. “Much depends on the situation on the ground, that’s why we have urged all parties in Syria to be cooperative,” Uzumcu said. “The elimination is in the interest of all.” Inspectors have already visited one chemical site in Syria and are visiting another on Wednesday, with some weapons already destroyed. “There are 20 sites to be visited in the coming weeks,” Uzumcu said. Speaking at the

same press conference, Uzumcu’s political advisor Malik Ellahi said “at the moment there are certain sites that are located in areas which are dangerous.” Ellahi added that most sites to be inspected at this stage were in Syrian government-controlled areas. Some 19 OPCW arms experts and 16 UN logistics and security personnel are in Syria and have started to destroy weapons production facilities, with footage of their work broadcast on Syrian television. UN chief Ban Ki-moon has warned that the weapons inspectors face unprecedented danger, saying it would take 100 foreign experts to complete “an operation the likes of which, quite simply, has never been tried before”. The mission will have bases in Damascus and Cyprus. Chemical weapons experts believe Syria has roughly 1,000 tonnes of sarin, mustard and VX nerve gas, some of it stored as bulk raw chemicals and some of it already loaded onto missiles, warheads or rockets. Under a Russian-US deal brokered last month, Syria must render useless all production facilities and weapons filling equipment by November. Its entire chemical weapons programme must be destroyed by June 30, 2014. Source: Al-Jazeera

The US is reducing its military aid to Egypt following the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi and the subsequent crackdown on his supporters by the military-backed government. The US provides $1.5bn in aid each year to Egypt. While the State Department did not provide the total amount of the aid being cut, it amounts to hundreds of millions in mostly military aid. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the US would withhold delivery of certain “large-scale military systems”, as well as cash assistance to the Egyptian government, until “credible progress” is made toward an inclusive civilian government set up through free and fair elections. “The United States wants to see Egypt succeed, and we believe the US-Egypt partnership will be strongest when Egypt is represented by an inclusive, democratically elected civilian government based on the rule of law, fundamental freedoms and an open and competitive economy,” Psaki said in a statement. Colonel Ahmed Ali, a spokesman for the Egyptian army, declined immediate comment. The call for a civilian government comes amid increasing talk that General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the defence minister and the architect of Morsi’s ouster, might run for president. In an interview published this week with al-Masry al-Youm, an Egyptian newspaper, Sisi left the door open to a presidential bid, saying it was “God’s will”. Some pro-military campaigners have started a petition drive urging him to run. Some of the items to be withheld include Abrams tanks, F-16 aircraft, Apache helicopters and Harpoon missiles, the Reuters news agency reported. Psaki added that the US will continue to provide health and education assistance and money to help Egypt secure its borders, counter terrorism and ensure security in the Sinai. Cutting or eliminating US aid to Egypt has been discussed for months, since the coup that ousted Morsi in July. Administration officials, and some members of Congress, hoped that the threat would prevent a harsh crackdown on Morsi’s supporters. But hundreds of them were killed in August, when the army cleared two proMorsi sit-ins in the capital, prompting the Obama administration to review its aid to Egypt. The decision will create new friction in Washington’s already uneasy relations with Egypt’s interim government, and will also likely anger many Gulf states, which were quick to embrace the country’s new rulers. Steve Clemons, the director of the US-based New America Foundation think tank, termed the development “significant” and “a sizable hit” to Egypt’s military. “Egypt has been doing none of the things that [the US government] hopes that they might. And after the violence and announcement today of the Morsi trial, the White House is in an embarrassing position if it doesn’t [...] take some action. But it’s important to know that the White House is not writing Egypt off - they’re still a key strategic partner,” he told Al Jazeera. Source: Al-Jazeera

Pakistan : Continued from pg 3 2013 to the nation. It was not an easy task to pump in such a big amount in the energy sector in the presence of bad financial position, he added. The prime minister said that the previous government did not concentrate on overcoming the problem of loadshedding, but expressed the resolve that there would be no loadshedding in the country after five years. In reply to a question, he said US drone strikes must stop because they were against sovereignty and integrity of Pakistan. No independent country could tolerate violations of its territory. Asked about steps his government has taken for economic prosperity, Mr Sharif said his economic team was well aware of the problems facing the country and expressed the confidence that the nation would overcome all its economic issues. He said his government had successfully finalised its arrangements with the IMF and also referred to formation of a vibrant energy policy. He said his government was exploring all means to generate inexpensive electricity from solar, hydel, coal and wind sources. He expressed grief and sorrow over the death of innocent people in the Qisa Khwani Bazaar and bus bomb blasts and prayed for eternal peace of the departed souls. He announced a compensation of Rs50 million for heirs of the victims of blasts.—APP

ONE OF RIGHTEOUS DEEDS: HAJJ By Harun Yahya www.harunyahya.com If Allah helps you, no one can vanquish you. If He forsakes you, who can help you after that? So the believers should put their trust in Allah. (Surah Al 'Imran: 160)

Fear Allah wherever you are; if you follow an evil deed with a good one you will obliterate it; and deal with people with a good disposition. (Tirmidhi)

H

ighteous deeds” (amelunsalihan) are one of the key concepts of the Qur'an. In Arabic, the word “righteousness” comprises the meanings of good, beneficial and right. In Arabic, the verb “to amend”(islah) is also derived from the same root. Consequently, in English, every type of beneficial and good work or action done for the good of religion is expressed by the word “righteous deed.” In terms of the Qur'an, on the other hand, each act and all behaviour designed to seek the favour of Allah is a “righteous deed.”

The salvation of an individual is not attained only through faith; righteous deeds, the signs of sincere faith, also save the soul. Saying “I believe” yet failing to comply with the commandments of religion does not lead man to salvation. In the Qur'an Allah states the following about this issue: Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, “We believe”, and that they will not be tested? We tested those before them, and Allah will certainly know those who are true from those who are false. (Al-Ankabut, 2-3) The way a believer does righteous deeds proves his mettle. His deeds indicate his perseverance, stability, determination and loyalty-in other words the depth of his faith. In the Qur'an Allah informs us about the various kinds of righteous deeds. Communicating the message of Islam to people, striving for the prosperity and the benefit of the Muslims, trying to attain a better understanding of the Qur'an, solving every kind of personal and social problem of the Muslims; all these are important righteous deeds. The fundamental Islamic forms of worship, such as saying prayers to Allah, fasting, spending for the cause of Allah, and the pilgrimage to Mecca are also among the important righteous deeds: Righteousness does not consist in whether you turn your faces towards the east or the west; what is righteous is to believe in Allah and the last day, and the angels, and the Book, and the messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast in prayer, and practise regular charity; to fulfil the contracts which you have made; and to be firm and patient, in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and in times of war. Such as do so are people of truth. Such are the Allah-fearing. (Al-Baqara, 177) Yet there is another point that deserves mention: what makes an act a righteous deed is not its result but the “intention” behind it.That is why for an act to be a righteous one, it should be done purely to seek the approval of Allah. This is what really distinguishes a “righteous deed” from “charity”, a concept prevalent in the ignorant society.A righteous deed is done to seek the approval of Allah; on the other hand, the concept of charity in an ignorant society, is based on a spirit of social solidarity and a personal desire to make a reputation as a “charity lover.” The verses below explain why the deeds of believers are by no means similar to alms-giving. They perform (their) vows, and they fear a Day whose evil flies far and wide. And they feed, for the love of Allah, the indigent, the orphan, and the captive, (Saying)”We feed you for the sake of Allah alone: no reward do we desire from you, nor thanks. We only fear a day of distressful wrath from our Lord.” (Al- Insan 7-10) If any acts ostensibly complying with the definition of “righteous deeds” are not intended to seek the good pleasure of Allah, they cease to be “righteous deeds.” This is simply because they are done to please other people. This is, in terms of the Qur'an,“associating partners with Allah”, which is a great sin. In the following verse, Allah explains how an act of worship done to attain not the approval of Allah, but other people loses its value and becomes an ordinary act. Woe to the worshippers, who are neglectful of their prayers; who only want to make a show of piety. (Al-Maun, 4-6) Similarly, spending, which is a righteous deed in the presence of Allah, becomes an ordinary act if done to demonstrate one's generosity in order to impress people. So does the pilgrimage to Mecca. Allah describes the difference between spending to gain His approval and to satisfy one's own desires: O you who believe! Do not cancel out your charity by reminders of your generosity or by injury,- like those who spend their substance to be seen by others, believing neither in Allah nor in the last day. They are in parable like a hard, barren rock, on which there is little soil: on it falls heavy rain, which leaves it just a bare stone. They will be able to do nothing with anything they have earned. And Allah does not guide those who reject faith. Those who spend their substance, seeking to please Allah and to strengthen their souls, are like a garden, high and fertile: heavy rain falls on it, and makes it yield a double harvest, and if it does not receive heavy rain, light moisture suffices it. Allah sees well whatever you do. (Al-Baqara, 264-265) Hence, the result of each deed always rests with Allah. Each task should be done solely to please Him.A devoted believer who perform righteous deeds all throughout his life, carries out the regular prayers and makes the pilgrimage to Mecca will surely attain the gardens of heaven and will be rewarded most generously by Allah in the hereafter. E D I T O R I A L

Hajj Purifies the Sincere Ones Only

The annual Hajj performance by the Muslims is in a way a marvellous opportunity to bring them together from all over the world to worship Allah the Almighty at one geographical location in a well organized manner. The massive gathering of three or more millions of Muslims at one common place of religious worship is, indeed, a confirmatory; the commendable step that gears up integration and solidarity in the different shades of the Muslim Umma. Naturally, if the Muslims from different parts of the World gather together and interact with one another as the members of the same family, the feelings and mindset of oneness is developed leading to an emotionalised atmosphere of relationship amongst them. Most probably, there is no other prerequisite for the unity, affinity and harmony ever noticed of any community. One has to have an intention to perform Hajj, and then the men have to be dressed in two unhemmed white cloths, while the ladies need to be modestly dressed keeping face and hands uncovered. The rituals are to be performed the same way as done by Prophet Mohammed Sallahu Alaihi wasllam. The ritual of walking seven times counter clockwise around the Kabah is called Tawaaf. Then, there is running or walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah. The throwing of pebbles at “Jamarat” is to signify the defiance of the devil and is an expression of the pilgrim’s intention to

obey Allah’s commandment, and is a demonstration of his humility and servitude to Him. The slaughtering of the animals and shaving or clipping of the hair are the actions that signify about the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him). The annual Hajj also is famous for teaching discipline and forbearance to all participants. In fact, the observance of the rites of Hajj in the faithful manner keeps the pilgrims very close to the purity of mind, and that’s the solitary mode to acquire the vicinity of God Almighty, indeed. Furthermore, the Hajj is the world’s greatest example of eliminating social discrimination and any other human differences. It’s based on the fact that all mankind is from Adam and Eve: An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have any superiority over an Arab; white has no superiority over black, nor does a black have any superiority over white; actually, none has superiority over another except by piety and good action, said the prophet during his last sermon at Arafat valley during his only hajj, as he performed Hajj just once. While delivering his sermon, our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be upon Him) advised the Hujjaj, “Regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust, return the goods to their rightful owners, and hurt no one so that no one may hurt you.” He said further, “Remember that

you will indeed meet your Lord, and that He will indeed reckon your deeds. God has forbidden you to take usury (interest), therefore all interest obligation shall henceforth be waived, your capital, however, is yours to keep, you will neither inflict nor suffer any inequity.” “Beware of Satan, for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.” “Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with any one of whom you do not approve, as well as never to be unchaste. O People, listen to me in earnest, worship God, perform your five daily prayers, fast during the month of Ramadan, and offer Zakat. Perform Hajj, if you have the means.” The prophet said, “I leave behind me two things, the Qur’an and my example, the Sunnah, and if you follow these you will never go astray.” Nevertheless, let’s remember - the Hajj, the Sacrifice and all Ibaadah may be nullified, if we tend to rejoin the sinful life. This means if our attitude doesn’t change, Allah will never help us achieve our Islamic purpose of life. Obviously, if we are not careful enough, the element of hypocrisy in our thoughts and actions is more than sufficient to ruin our effort of connecting to our Creator/Lord.

Moreover, the disease of hypocrisy attacks those weaker ones who fail to maintain TAQWA, and those who don’t follow the Qur’an and Sunnah; hence are at greater risk. Since, the polluted thoughts lead to social vices 24/7; we must resist them to maintain good connection with our Creator. The problem is some people go for Hajj, yet, they don’t hesitate to indulge in arguments, fights; or lose talk; hence are liable for maintaining the stinky environment around them. Furthermore, it’s usually seen that some people during Tawaaf (fard) love to violate the general atmosphere by committing short cuts to reach for kissing the black stone (hajr-e-aswad) which is just a sunnah. Accidents do happen with this nonsense. If there is no self discipline, there is no Ibaaddah. If selfishness is allowed to frustrate the others, how is the hajj valid then? However, on the other hand, the true believers behave well with utmost patience despite the odds. From the very start, they observe calmness and when they return after hajj, they are really transformed into good citizens and they are Sin Free like a newly born baby. May Allah (SWT) enable all the Hujjaaj to perform the hajj within the allowed parameters. May He accept the Hajj of all pilgrims this year and help them return home safely in good spiritual purity and a sound physical health as well.(Ameen).

Letters & Opinions Message on Eid al-Adha from Justin Trudeau MP and Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, made the following statement today on Eid al-Adha: “Sophie and I extend our greetings to Muslims across Canada and around the world for a happy Eid al-Adha, and congratulate all those who are performing Hajj. Through morning prayer, the exchange of greetings and gifts with loved ones, and partaking in

charitable acts, those observing Eid al-Adha reflect the values that bring all Canadians together - those of peace, altruism, family and friendship. On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, my family and I wish all those observing Eid al-Adha a wonderful celebration.

42nd Anniversary of Multiculturalism The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, made the following statement on the 42nd anniversary of Canada’s policy of multiculturalism: “Today we mark 42 years since Canada adopted an official policy of multiculturalism. In so doing, we affirmed that Canada is strong not in spite of our diversity, but because of it. In a country as diverse as ours, this is a wonderful opportunity to recognize the common values that bind us together as a nation: democracy, freedom, compassion and equality. This anniversary, specifically, serves as a reminder that Canadians deserve better than the Marois government’s divisive plan to

legislate away minority rights. We are an open, positive people, and we will demand better than this.”Liberal Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Critic, John McCallum, continued: “From our earliest days as a nation, through to the official adoption of multiculturalism in 1971 and the later inclusion of this principle in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Canada’s strength and vibrancy have long been built on the cornerstone of diversity. Canadian multiculturalism quite simply upholds that all our citizens are equal, and that their individual contributions enhance and enrich our national character.”

Congratulations to the Muslim Community On Eid Ul Adha By: Jasbir Sandhu, Ndp MP For Surrey North, I extended my felicitations to the Muslim community of BC as they mark the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca and Eid ul Adha, the Muslim celebration of altruism. Thousands of Canadian and BC Muslims are among the nearly 3 million pilgrims currently in Mecca, a part of one of the world’s largest and most diverse annual gatherings. This is a show of renewal of faith, critical self-reflection and honouring the spirit of altruism which is quite remarkable and unique. I would therefore like to convey my sincere greetings to our Muslim brothers and sisters as they celebrate Eid ul Adha,

ATTENTION Due to this Eid special edition, there will be no publication of Miracle on October 18, 2013 IMPORTANT NOTE: Letters to the editor do not reflect the opinion of the Miracle media group. We do not publish anonymous letters or the letters of the people who do not disclose their identity to ‘The Miracle.’ A writer can use a pen name or request ‘The Miracle’ to withhold his / her identity. Please include your daytime telephone number for the confirmation of your letter. We regret the inconvenience.

All others should still take the message based on the Prophet Muhammad’s last sermon leading to more unity among the members of Muslim community all over the globe enabling them to have self-control and unconditional submission to Allah (SWT). Certainly, if the Islamic values are appropriately observed and practised sincerely, beyond doubt, there is a real understanding of the significance of Hajj and Eid-ulAdha. Waan laysa lil insani illa ma’ sa’aa That man can have nothing but what he strives for.

Dhul Hajjah 10, 1434 H October 15, 2013

F A I T H Sahih Bukhari ~ Hadith Number 592 Narrated Thumama bin ‘Abdullah bin Anas: Anas performed the Hajj on a pack-saddle and he was not a miser. Anas said, “Allah’s Apostle performed Hajj on a pack-saddle and the same Mount was carrying his baggage too.”

EID UL ADHA An Islamic Occasion This celebration takes place on the tenth of the 12th Muslim month (Dhul Hijja) and marks the end of the pilgrimage or Hajj. It is the “Feast of Sacrifice” which is also known as Baqri-Eid (the “Cow Festival”) because its most important feature is the sacrifice of an animal (cow, goat, sheep, or other appropriate beast) in commemoration of the ram sacrificed by Abraham in place of his son. The sacrificial animal should be healthy and free of defects and be more than one year old. This requirement can also be accomplished by donating the equivalent cost of the sacrificial animal to a reputable charity e.g., Islamic Relief, Human Appeal International or Muslim Aid which arranges for its distribution throughout the Muslim world where there is greatest need. The command to perform sacrifices is given in Surah 22.36 and although no specific day is fixed in the Qur’an the sacrificing of animals was already practiced on the last day of the pilgrimage by the pre-Islamic Arabs and this practice has been duly retained. On this day Muslims throughout the world symbolize their willingness to sacrifice their life and property in the name of God and for the cause of Islam. Celebrations begin with special congregational Prayers (salah) followed by a sermon called a Khutbah. The Prayers are held between sunrise and noon, usually early in the morning. Community prayers are held, new clothes are worn, and presents are offered. Families visit the deceased at the cemeteries and offer meat and food to the poor and needy. It is a family occasion and great emphasis is placed on all members of the extended family to support the festivities with their presence. Fasting on Eid-ul-Adha is forbidden as it defeats the whole purpose of the festival, because food is to be eaten on this day with a cheerful heart in remembrance of God’s bounty and provision for mankind. Eid Al-Adha, during the Hajj season, lasts for three days. Eid Al-Adha (also known as the Greater Bairam) during the Hajj season. These celebrations begin with special congregational Prayers (salah) followed by a sermon called a Khutbah. The Prayers are held between sunrise and noon, usually early in the morning. It is a highly recommended sunnah to attend these Prayers. It is also sunnah to hold them outside of the mosque, such as in a park, if possible. It is sunnah to make ghusl (cleansing of the body) before attending, and to wear one’s best clean clothes, even new clothes if possible. Men (but not women) should also apply perfume before the Prayers. Women who are unable to perform salah (ritual Prayer) should attend the `Eid Prayer and sit in the back behind those who are praying so that they can enjoy the festivities of the day.

The Sunnah Action On The Day Of Eid ul Adha 1. One should wake up early. 2. It is Mustahab for those who are sacrificing an animal not to eat anything on the morning of Eid-ul-Adha till they sacrifice the animal and partake of the meat of the sacrificed animal. 3. One should make Ghusal, wear new clothes and use Itr before going for Eid Salaah. 4. One should try and be as early as possible in the Masjid or Eid Gah (open ground for

15: After Imam Khutbah say Eid greetings each others.

Importance Of Eid

performing Eid Salaah). 5. One should read the Takbeer softly while going to the Masjid or Eid Gah on the day of Eid 6. The Takbeer should be read loudly on the day of Eid-ul-Adha. 7. It is preferable that one uses different routes in traveling to and from the Masjid or Eid Gah.

The Time Of Eid Salaah 1. The time of Eid Salaah begins just after sunrise and continues up to Zawaal. 2. No Nafil Salaah should be read before the Eid Salaah. 3. No Azaan or Iqaamah is given for Eid Salaah. Remember the Method Of Performing The Eid Salaah In general, when praying any Salah, always follow the Imam in prayer. Do not make your movements (i.e. bowing, prostrating, etc.) before he does or different from him. Eid prayer consists of two units (Rakat in Arabic, singular is Raka). The main difference in the way this prayer and any other prayer of two Rakat is performed is the number of Takbirs that are done. Takbirs is an the Arabic word referring to when “Allahu Akbar” is said and the hands are raised to the ears. Make an intention of doing two Rakat behind the Imam for Eid prayer along with six additional Takbirs.

The First Raka 1: After the Imam has said “Allahu Akbar” the first time, you should raise your hands and follow. This is the first Takbir of the prayer. 2: There will be 3 Takbirs before the Imam starts reciting Quran. Each time the Imam says “Allahu Akbar”, you should follow by raising your hands, then putting them on your sides. 3: After the third Takbir, the Imam will begin reciting the Quran. At that point, you should put your hands on your chest, with your right hand on top of the left. 4: Listen to the recitation of the Holy Quran. The Imam will recite Surah Al Fatiha (the first Surah of the Quran) and then another Surah. 5: When the Imam says “Allahu Akbar” go into Ruku (the bowing position). 6: Stand up straight when he says Sami Allahu liman Hamidah (Allah hears those who praise Him), and say “Rabbana lakal Hamd” (our

Lord praise be to You) in a low voice. 7: When the Imam says “Allahu Akbar” go into Sujud (prostration). You will do two prostrations as in normal prayer.

The Second Raka 8: The Imam will first recite from the Holy Quran (first Surah Al Fatiha and another Surah. 9: After the recitation, before going into Ruku, there will be 3 Takbirs. Follow the Imam. Raise your hands after each “Allahu Akbar”. After the third Takbir, go into Ruku (the bowing position). 10: Stand up straight when the Imam says Sami Allah huliman Hamidah, and say “Rabbana lakal Hamd” in a low voice. 11: When the Imam says “Allahu Akbar” go into Sujud. You will do two prostrations. 12: After this, you sit for the complete Tashshahud. 13: After the Imam ends the prayer by turning to his face to the right first and saying “Assalamu alaikum wa Rahmatullah” and then to his left and doing the same, you should follow. 14: Do not get up right away. The Imam will give a short Khutbah (speech). The Khutbah is Sunnah and it is Waajib to listen to them. There is a short break between the Khutbah. During Khutbah, all talking or reading is forbidden.

Eid-ul-Adha is the celebration of sacrifice, and it is important for two reasons. First, during Eid-ul-Adha we remember the spirit of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) and how he was willing to sacrifice the person he loved the most, because it was Allah’s command which he had to obey no matter what! Second, Eid-ul-Adha ends the period of Hajj (the 5th pillar of Islam ). Every year, about 3 million people go to Mecca and perform the pilgrimage together. To be actually so near the Kabah is to be closest to Allah. Its a entirely out of the world experience!! Celebrating Eid-ul-Adha with your family and friends is similar to that of Eid-ul-Fitr. Eid a Thanksgiving Day Each ‘Eid is a Thanksgiving Day where the Muslims assemble in a brotherly and joyful atmosphere to offer their gratitude to Allah for helping them to fulfil their spiritual obligations prior to the ‘Eid. This form of thanksgiving is not confined to spiritual devotion and verbal expressions. It goes far beyond that to manifest itself in the shape of social and humanitarian spirit. This Islamic form of thanksgiving is a wholesome and rare combination of spiritual devotion and humanitarian benevolence.

Eid a Day of remembrance Each ‘Eid is a Day of remembrance. The Muslims pray to Allah and glorify His name in an act of remembrance of His favors. Along with that ,they remember the deceased by praying for their souls, the needy by extending a helping hand, the grieved by sympathizing with them, the sick by cheerful visits and utterances of good wishes, the absentees by cordial greetings and sincere considerateness. Thus the meaning of remembrance on the Day transcends all constraints and expands over far-reaching dimensions of human life.

8 F A I T H How the Prophet brought about positive change Dhul Hajjah 10, 1434 H October 15, 2013

SIXTH century Arabia witnessed world’s perhaps the greatest and most profound change in history that happened but peacefully. Nevertheless, it was truly decisive. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) changed the people’s beliefs, their behavior, their customs, and their social norms, and he did so by convincing them with kindness and gentle persuasion. He did not force people to agree with him. He did not resort to a show of strength except when absolutely necessary to protect his people. For the first 13 years of his mission, he lived in Makkah in a state of abject weakness, persecuted by his countrymen. After he emigrated to Madinah, his focus was on building and safeguarding his community. If we consider the landmark events of the Madinite era, we find that the battle of Badr was not pre-planned; the battle of Uhud was purely defensive as was the Battle of the Confederate tribes. The peace treaty of Hudaibiyah that the Prophet entered into with the Makkans was seen by many of the Muslims to be a humiliation for Islam, but the Prophet knew better. Yet, when the Muslims finally entered Makkah in victory, it was a peaceful conquest. They took the city without fighting or bloodshed. The Prophet (peace be upon him) stood among the Makkans, who feared reprisals for the years of persecution they had meted out to the Muslims, and said: “You may go as you please, for you are free.” It was perhaps world’s first amnesty. He restored to the weak and oppressed their rights, manumit-

ted slaves, elevated the status of the people, and did away with oppressive practices against women. He likewise did away with the exploitative practices, pomp and influence of the city’s despots with the minimum of hardship for all parties concerned. It is impressive how the Prophet (peace be upon him) rid Arabian society of the many deep-rooted and pernicious customs that they were pursuing during the times of ignorance. He was able to bring about a new mindset, freed from the rote, blind following of ancestral traditions. He made the people aware of the falsehood of their former customs, so this awareness could protect them from lapsing back into such modes of thought. This way, the Prophet brought them out of the darkness of superstition, fortune-telling and divination. He dispelled their wantonness and sexual exploitation. He did away with their tribal boasting and rivalries. He rid their hearts of racism. When his own companion Abu Dharr betrayed racist tendencies, he did not hesitate to tell him: “You are indeed a man possessed of some habits from the times of ignorance.” He never compromised on polytheism. He opposed it absolutely, regardless of the sacrifices and hardships this meant for him. He strove to dismantle polytheism in the minds and hearts of the people and bring them to monotheism. Nevertheless, when he went to Makkah after the Treaty of Hudaibiyah to perform the Umrah, there were 360 idols around the Kaaba. He did not

destroy the idols or interfere with them in any way. What would have been the point? It was easy for people to recreate their idols as long as they believed in them. The only possible way was to dismantle them from people’s hearts and minds first. Only after he entered Makkah as their leader, after the people entered into Islam in droves, did he remove the idols from the Kaaba, restoring it as a place of worship for Allah alone. At this time, a great majority of the people had been convinced of the falsehood of idol worship. Indeed, one of the Makkah leaders commented: “Had they been of any worth, they would not have forsaken us.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) was an example of patience in how he coexisted with the pagans in Makkah, and in the fortitude he showed by responding gently and with an open heart to them, in spite of to their abuses and hostility toward him and towards the men and women who chose to follow him. Then, after the emigration to

Hajj E Badal

Hajj e Badal is the hajj done on the behalf of other people who are physically not fit enough to embark on hajj or those who have already passed away. Those who are going to perform the Hajj e Badal is called Mahmoor and on whose behalf he is doing Hajj is called Aamir. There are certain facts about Hajj e Badal. Hajj should be a must for Aamir and should be physically unfit to make Hajj as long as he lives. He gives his consent for Mahmoor to perform Hajj on his behalf and spends his own money for the Mahmoor’s journey and other expenses. However heirs may do Hajj for their deceased

parents and in this case, the consent of the parents before they die is not needed. When the Mahmoor says out his intention to do Hajj when entering Ihram, he must say that he is performing Hajj on behalf of Aamir. One person can do Hajj e Badal only for one person at a time and he cannot do for a group of people at one time. There is no separate Ihram for Mahmoor and Aamir. Only the appointed person or the Mahmoor should perform Hajj. Mahmoor cannot send anyone else for this purpose. It is a best option that Mahmoor should start his journey from the hometown of Aamir. He must abide by the instructions of Aamir. Only Hajj e Qiran or Hajj e Ifrad could be done in this case and Hajj e Tamattu is not advisable. Even when Hajj e Qiran is done, Qurbani should be given at the expense of Mahmoor and not Aamir. If Mahmoor did not do Hajj properly, then the Hajj of Aamir will not be accepted. However if the heirs perform Hajj on the behalf of their parents then

they may perform Hajj e Tamattu. It is better to send a person who has already completed his own Hajj as Mahmoor. However if a person did not do Hajj for himself but is not a must for him on account of his wealth, then sending him for Hajj e Badal is accepted. The Mahmoor should enter into Ihram at the place of Aamir for performing Hajj on his behalf but when he does Hajj e Tamattu, he comes out of Ihram after completing Umrah and then again enters into Ihram from Makkah for doing Hajj and so this Ihram becomes Makki Ihram and not the Ihram worn at the place of Aamir. That is the reason why it is said that only Hajj e Ifrad or Hajj e Tamattu has to be performed in this case. However, when the parents are dead and their heirs want to send someone else for Hajj, then there are no special instructions for that and any type of Hajj is allowed. http://www.whatishaj.com/blog/ arafat-to-muzdalifah-confusion. html

Madinah, he lived alongside the Jews and the pagans from the local tribes, not to mention the hypocrites who concealed their animosity toward Islam and the Muslims who were weak in faith. These people were still in Madinah at the time of the Prophet’s death. Qur’an’s Al-Hujurat chapter, which addresses those who were being ill-mannered toward the Prophet and using spiteful names, was revealed in the 9th year after the emigration. One of its final verses reads: “The Bedouins say: ‘We have believed.’ Say (to them): ‘You have not (yet) believed; but say (instead), ‘We have submitted,’ for faith has not yet entered your hearts. And if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not deprive you from your deeds of anything. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” (Qur’an, 49:14) At the time of the Prophet’s death, his shield was being held by a Jewish man as collateral for a debt he owed him. The Prophet had borrowed the money to provide food for his family. The Prophet needed the money at the

time, and the purchase of the shield was in the Jewish man’s interest. This is the basis of coexistence, to realize that your own welfare and that of other people can be realized together. This way, the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave a practical lesson for future generations. Madinah, the first capital of Islam, had this diversity within. In this way, the people could learn how to call others to Islam and how to conduct themselves in a society where they live with people of other faiths as fellow citizens. During the many eras of Islamic rule in history, the rights of the various religious communities and denominations were upheld and protected within the context of a strong social fabric. They were not forced to change their religion or their denominational affiliation. The Muslims continued to engage them in polite debate and discussion. This social fabric can be torn apart by conflicts spurred on by political interests who instigate the ignorant people and play on their prejudices. When this happens, when neighbor turns against neighbor, people abandon our Prophet’s teachings, which stress neighborly rights even with those you disagree with. At times of conflict, people behave irrationally and suspiciously. Sensible people know that this state of affairs is temporary and can — must — be surmounted. People can settle back into living together in peace and cooperation for their mutual wellbeing. Courtesy of en.islamtoday.net

Eid-ul-Adha Celebrated around the World

The Eid al Adha 2013 IN Canada, USA and other parts on Oct 15. The Eid al Adha is likely to be celebrated on Tuesday, Oct 15, the same day when the event is likely to be held in Saudi Arabia. The British Columbia Muslim Association (BCMA) and Fiqh Council of North America says in its statement that Muslims in North America including United States, Canada and other parts will celebrate on Oct 15. Eid-ul-Adha is the Muslim festival that marks the end of the pilgrimage to Makkah known as Hajj. Eid-ul-Adha is also known as the “Feast of Sacrifice, ”and it commemorates Abraham’s faith and devotion to God. According to Muslim belief God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son, and although he was a good man and loved his son; his faith and devotion to God was strong enough that he would a accommodate God’s request. Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his own son for God caused God to spare his son’s life, and a lamb was sacrificed in his place. On the first morning of Eid al-Adha, Muslims around the world attend morning prayers at their local mosques. At some point, members of the family will visit a local farm or otherwise to make arrangements for the sacrifice of an animal. Allah has given us power over animals and allowed us to eat meat, but only if we pronounce His name at the solemn act of taking life. Muslims slaughter animals in the same way throughout the year. By saying the name of Allah at the time of slaughter, we are reminded that life is sacred. The meat from the sacrifice of Eid al-Adha is mostly given away to others. One-third is eaten by immediate family and relatives, one-third is given away to friends, and onethird is donated to the poor. The act symbolizes our willingness to give up things that are of benefit to us or close to our hearts, in order to follow Allah’s commands. It also symbolizes our willingness to give up some of our own bounties, in order to strengthen ties of friendship and help those who are in need. We recognize that all blessings come from Allah, and we should open our hearts and share with others. It is very important to understand that the sacrifice itself, as practiced by Muslims, has nothing to do with atoning for our sins or using the blood to wash ourselves from sin. This is a misunderstanding by those of previous generations: “It is not their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah; it is your piety that reaches Him.” (Qur’an 22:37) The symbolism is in the attitude - a willingness to make sacrifices in our lives in order to stay on the Straight Path. Each of us makes small sacrifices, giving up things that are fun or important to us. A true Muslim, one who submits his or herself completely to the Lord, is willing to follow Allah’s commands completely and obediently. It is this strength of heart, purity in

meat from the sacrifice is distributed among the poor people of the area, and a feast is has among friends and family. In Bangladesh During Eid-ul-Adha in Bangladesh it is mandatory that an animal is sacrificed, and the animal’s age and health is important. An unhealthy animal is considered an imperfect sacrifice. The sacrifices start during morning prayers, and they continue for three days during Eid-ul-Adha in Bangladesh. Feasts and prayers are similar in Bangladesh as they are in many other countries, except the sacrifice is extremely faith, and willing obedience that our Lord important.Eid-ul-Adha is a special time for Muslims around the world; it is a time desires from us. Eid-ul-Adha is a sacred Muslim holiday where they honor God by showing their faith and devotion through sacrifice, feast, In Egypt and prayer. This Muslim holiday is celebrated around the world, and some traditions are slightly different, but the devotion and honor of God remains the same during

In Egypt Eid-ul-Adha is celebrated by morning prayers and feasting, but it is referred to as “Eid el-Kibr.” Morning prayers at a mosque and a sermon are the tradition of Muslims during this holiday, and after their prayers they meet with their friends and family for a celebratory feast. During this Muslim holiday the wealthy and charity organizations give beef and other foods to the poor in honor of the sacrifice associated with this holiday. In Pakistan:

The end of hajj marks the start of the Islamic festival of sacrifice, Eid al-Adh. EID-UL-ADHA MUBARAK

Brothers and Sisters in Islam; Assalamu Alaikum WRWB On behalf of Iqra School Board, staff, parents, and students, I am pleased to convey my heartiest Eid Mubarak Greetings on this auspicious occasion of Eid Ul Adha. Eid Ul Adha is not only a day about slaughtering animals and sharing the meat with the poor and needy, our friends and families. The most important part of this holy and auspicious day is that it is a day of reflection on obedience. In the message of Eid Ul Adha we learn of Prophet Ebrahim (Alayhis Salaam) submission and obedience to Allah SWT and his willingness to sacrifice the son whom he cherished. It is a day of redirecting our lives to the service of the Creator and Sustainer of the Universe – Allah. Let us, as we do our sacrifices, remind ourselves that if we are to be a part of making changes, we must sacrifice all our evil tendencies and ask Allah SWT to make us the instrument of change for the betterment of ourselves and mankind. We have to submit ourselves to the commands of Allah, to submit ourselves to the study of Holy Quran and follow the Sunnah of our Beloved Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him). This occasion marks the end for pilgrimage to Makkah al Mukarramah – the fifth pillar of Islam. Hajj Mabrook to all who have made this journey of a life time; we pray for their success and rewards, and pray to Allah SWT for their safe return. May Allah SWT accept our sacrifices, keep us all on the straight path, guide us and protect us all. Eid Mubarak

BC Liberals dodge accountability and fail to take action for seniors by avoiding legislature By Adrian Dix, B.C. New Democrat leader This week should have been spent in the legislature, holding the government to account on issues that are important to British Columbians. Instead, the B.C. Liberal government cancelled the fall session of the legislature, leaving key issues without a resolution, and showing contempt for public accountability and transparency. This is the second consecutive fall sitting shut down by Premier Christy Clark, and will mean the legislature will only sit for 36 days in 2013. If the legislature had been sitting, the B.C. Liberals would have had to answer tough questions about the treatment of seniors and their families. The inappropriate way Vivian Fitzpatrick, a 90 year old frail senior was discharged from hospital, followed by the failure of the health minister to respond adequately to her family’s concerns, confirms the need for an independent seniors advocate. Despite passing legislation seven months

ago, the Liberals have not appointed such an advocate. Health Minister Terry Lake is now admitting that his government hasn’t even figured out a selection process to fill the position. If the legislature was in session as it is supposed to be, the Liberals would be facing pressure from the New Democrat Opposition to make the office accountable to seniors and their families. Under the Liberals existing legislation, the seniors advocate will not be independent from government, but instead will report to cabinet. Only a truly independent office would be able to help prevent another patient experiencing what happened to Mrs. Fitzpatrick and her family. We should be in the legislature so the Liberal government is held to account for election promises it has already failed to keep, beginning with the double-digit hydro rate increases that customers could soon be facing. While Premier Clark promised stable rates before and during the election, a leaked document dated Aug. 23 revealed that the deputy

ministers for the premier and finance minister were in high level meetings to consider BC Hydro’s need for a 26 per cent rate increase. We also would have asked the Liberals why they have failed to keep their promise to bring forward a formal apology for historic wrongs to the Chinese community – a central election commitment Premier Clark repeated over and over again. And the Liberals would have had to answer for the effects of their bogus budget, which has resulted in uncaring cuts across the province. While the world celebrated World Mental Health Day this week, the Liberal government’s budgeting has meant cuts to mental health programs and clinic hours across B.C. In the midst of what the Mayor of Vancouver and the Chief of the Vancouver Police Department recently called a “mental health crisis,” these cuts will mean the effective downloading of mental health costs to police departments and emergency rooms. We would have asked the government to account for these damaging cuts, and hold it account-

able for its election promise to protect critical services. The fall session of the legislature would also have presented the opportunity for MLAs to work on important issues. We would have had the opportunity to table and pass legislative amendments to end lavish raises for ferry executives. Though each year the Liberal government voices their disappointment with executive pay at B.C. Ferries, they have neglected to make a simple change to the Coastal Ferries Act that would put an end to unacceptable annual compensation increases for top executives. We would have fought for this simple and effective change in the legislature. The legislature is a crucial vehicle of democracy, providing an opportunity for the government to be directly accountable to the people who elected it. Whether in the legislature or in constituencies around B.C., New Democrats will continue to fight for these and many other issues important facing the province.

Minister Kenney calls for action to strengthen Canada’s labour market The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Employment and Social Development and Minister for Multiculturalism, spoke to business leaders at the Economic Club of Canada in Toronto about the Government’s strategy to tackle skills shortages in Canada. “Our government’s number one priority remains jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity. The federal government plays a key role in creating the conditions for strong private sector job creation and positioning

the country for success in the global economy,” said Minister Kenney. “The Canada Job Grant is the cornerstone of our plan to make federal funding for job creation and training more demand-driven and ensure that employers are part of the solution.” Minister Kenney stressed the need for greater coordination and action by the private sector, provinces and territories and post-secondary institutions to connect Canadians to jobs. Speaking to an audience of approximately

100 business leaders, Minister Kenney acknowledged that the current imbalances in the labour market hamper productivity and affect growth. Nearly 1.4 million Canadians are unemployed while 216 100 jobs remain vacant. Recent initiatives by government focus on more directly involving employers in decisions regarding job creation and skills training. “We have too many jobs without people and

too many people without jobs. This is the challenge we must address,” added Minister Kenney. “Never before have provinces and employers had such a willing and engaged partner on this file. We will be pushing all of our partners to act in their areas of jurisdiction to improve Canada’s labour market and ensure continued economic growth.” A strong economy that delivers prosperity relies on a labour market that is skilled, adaptable and innovative. Economic Action Plan 2013 also offers a path which will strengthen Canada’s fiscal advantage and spur long-term jobs and growth. For more information, visit www.actionplan.gc.ca.

UN chief outlines Syria chemical weapons plan

Ban Ki-moon proposes formation of 100-strong mission, based in Cyprus, to oversee destruction of weapons by mid2014. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has proposed the formation of a 100-member strong mission to oversee the cataloguing and destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile, according to a letter from the UN chief to the Security Council. Ban said that international chemical weapons inspectors and support staff were operating in a “dangerous and volatile” environment, and that such a mission, to be conducted in three phases and ending June 30, 2014, was unprecedented. The joint mission of the UN and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) “will seek to conduct an operation the likes of which, quite simply, have never been tried before,” Ban said, in a report to the UN Security Council on Monday. Ban said that a team of 19 OPCW and 16 UN inspectors had already been sent to Syria as part of an advance team, but that the overall mission would involve as many as 100 people, and would be based in Cyprus. The joint mission is to carry out the destruction of President Bashar al-Assad’s chemical arms by mid-2014, in line with a UN Security Council resolution passed on

September 27. Russia and the United States acted to disarm Syria after a chemical weapons attack near Damascus in August in which hundreds of people were killed. Ban said that the joint mission would undertake its task in three stages. In the first two phases, running through November 1, the mission would complete initial inspections and “oversee the destruction by [Syria] of all chemical weapons production and mixing and filling equipment”. In the third phase, running from November 1 to June 30, 2014, the mission is “to support, monitor and verify the destruction of a complex chemical weapons programme involving multiple sites spread over a country engulfed in violent conflict”, including “approximately 1,000 metric tons” of chemical weapons material, Ban said. Ban also said that as neither the UN nor the OPCW was mandated to carry out actual destruction activities, it was “highly probable” that UN member states would have to provide technical, operational and security assistance in the final phase. He also reiterated his support for a political solution to the crisis in Syria, which has claimed more than 100,000 lives, saying that an “inclusive and Syrian-led political process” was the only way to end the crisis. US and Russia ‘satisfied’ Ban’s comments came as US Secretary of State John Kerry said that the United States and Russia were “very pleased” with the progress made so far in destroying Syria’s chemical weapons stocks. Kerry’s comments came after he held highlevel talks with Sergey Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, on the sidelines of an AsiaPacific economic summit in Indonesia on Monday. “The process has begun in record time and we are appreciative for the Russian cooperation and obviously for the Syrian compliance,” he told reporters alongside Lavrov after the talks. “I think it’s extremely significant that yesterday, Sunday, within a week of the [UN] resolution being passed, some chemical weapons were being destroyed,” Kerry said. In less expansive comments on the latest developments, Lavrov said he was “satisfied”, and promised Russia would continue to ensure Assad’s government completed the dismantling process.

Experts destroyed missile warheads, aerial bombs and chemical mixing equipment on Sunday on the first day of the campaign to eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons, the UN said. Syria’s chemical arsenal is be-

lieved to include 1,000 tonnes of the nerve agent sarin, mustard gas and other banned arms at dozens of sites. Source: Al Jazeera

Israel’s right targets textbooks Conservative parties are lobbying to remove Palestinian history from school curriculum.

By Jonathan Cook Israel’s right-wing government and its supporters stand accused of stoking an atmosphere of increasing intimidation and intolerance in schools and among groups working for a peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The latest efforts by the right to stifle dissent have included censoring schoolbooks and seeking to silence organisations that raise troubling questions about Israel and its past - in what appears to be an escalating war for the minds of Israelis. Groups allied to the government tried to prevent the recent staging of an international conference in Tel Aviv that examined events surrounding Israel’s creation in 1948 - known as the “War of Independence” to Israelis and the “Nakba”, or catastrophe, to Palestinians. At the same time, it emerged that one of the far-right groups involved, Im Tirtzu, had initiated a campaign to shut down the organisation behind the conference, Zochrot, accusing it of violating Israeli law by “rejecting Israel’s existence”. Zochrot challenges Israel’s greatest taboo: the right of millions of Palestinians to return the homes from which they and their

ancestors were expelled in 1948. Many Israelis vehemently oppose such a move because they see it as entailing the end of their state’s Jewishness. Eitan Bronstein, Zochrot’s founder, said the two-day conference had been particularly threatening to the right. “For the first time we considered more than just the theoretical right of return,” he said. “This time the emphasis was very much on considering how we can implement the return. Refugees even offered us computersimulated models of how it could be affected on the ground.” The timing is embarrassing for Israel as long-stalled peace talks with the Palestinians were recently revived under pressure from the United States. One of the key issues to resolve is whether the refugees should be allowed to return to more than 500 villages Israel subsequently destroyed. More generally, far-right groups close to Benjamin Netanyahu’s government have sought ways to shut down funding for organisations seen as either being too critical of Israel, or working to protect the human rights of Palestinians under occupation. I AM MALALA: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban

On October 9, 2012, Pakistani teenager Malala Yousafzai survived being shot by the Taliban and ushered in a new age of activism for women in the region. Malala’s only crime was that she wanted the right to attend school. Lucky for her, and for all of us, Malala survived the shooting and is standing up for women who seek education. She was able to communicate with the rest of the world through the BBC blog, “Diary of a Pakistani Schoolgirl.” The Taliban have renewed their threats against Malala. While she was not the winner of the 2013 Nobel Peace prize, the petition endorsing her nomination has already received support from an illustrious list of global personalities, including Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. That apart, Malala has emerged as a champion of literacy and girl child education in extraordinary circumstances. The award nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize have already changed the discourse for her cause. Malala Yousafzai was just 15 years old when a would-be assassin shot her in the head as she headed home from school in Pakistan. Now, on the first anniversary of that attack, Malala sits down with Anna Maria Tremonti for her only Canadian interview to speak about her fight for female education in Pakistan and life in the crosshairs of the Taliban. Although the Taliban promises to try to kill Malala again if they get the chance, she continues to fight for her cause and encourages all of Pakistan’s sons and daughters to pursue an education. Taliban shooting made ‘millions of Malalas’ speak up The Taliban’s attempt to silence Malala Yousafzai a year ago today only ended up encouraging millions of other

girls to speak up for their rights, the young Pakistani activist says. “They wanted to silence one Malala, but instead now thousands and millions of Malalas are speaking,” the 16-year-old told Anna Maria Tremonti, the host of CBC Radio’s The Current, in a Canadian exclusive interview airing. “They’re fighting for their rights.” Malala, who was already an outspoken advocate for girls’ education, was critically injured on Oct. 9, 2012, when a gunman shot her while she was riding home on a school bus in the city of Mingora. In a wide-ranging interview taped in New York City, Malala describes what her life was like before the shooting, the significant role her “great” and outspoken father has played in her life and how she hopes a foundation she was instrumental in setting up will encourage advocacy for education. The young activist says she doesn’t recall the shooting itself — the story she recounts is based on what friends have told her. Malala says two men in their 20s — she calls them “boys” — stopped the school vehicle and came on board. “Then one of those boys were talking to … the driver in the front seat and one came at the back. And he asked: ‘Who is Malala?’ “He didn’t give me time to answer him and then he shot me. He fired three bullets. One bullet hit me and the other two [bullets] hit my friends.” Malala says she “fell down” in her friend’s lap. “The bullet hit me in the left side of my ... left eye,” she says. “And then that one bullet went down through my shoulder and then it came out of here

through my left shoulder.” Days after the shooting, Malala was taken to Britain to receive specialized care and be kept safe from further attacks. She was released from Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham three months later. “Now I’m feeling very well and I’m recovering every day,” Malala told Tremonti. Malala’s account of her life ranges from the typical teenage pursuits of Canadian pop heart-throb Justin Bieber and the Twilight books to considering how things changed in the Swat Valley with the arrival of the Taliban. “The worst thing was that they were against the education of girls,” she told Tremonti. “In the month of January 2009, they said that no girl is allowed to go to school. And at that time I said, ‘Why should we be silent? Why don’t we speak up for our rights? Why

don’t we tell the world what is happening in Swat.’ And I did not want Swat to be a next Afghanistan.” At age 11, Malala started blogging under a pseudonym for the BBC about her love of learning and the Taliban oppression, especially that ban on educating girls in her area. “The thing that I noticed in my life during that situation was that before the terrorism, I used to carry a heavy bag to school

and I used to learn every day, but I did not know how important education is until we were stopped,” she told Tremonti. “I realized that the terrorists are against education and especially girls’ education because they are afraid of it.” Malala now lives in Britain with her family. Pakistan appointed Malala’s

father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, as its education attaché in Birmingham, a position he will hold for at least three years. Since the attack, Malala has earned worldwide recognition for her work. She addressed

the United Nations Youth Assembly and the organization declared July 12, her birthday, Malala Day. An online petition seeking to nominate Malala for the Nobel Peace Prize, gathered nearly

300,000 signatures. “It is really a great honour for me that people said, ‘Give it to Malala,’ so that’s why I’m really happy to be nominated.” Malala awarded Children’s Peace Prize Malala Yousafzai raises a trophy she was given by Yemeni

Malala Yousafzai waves her RAW (Reach All Women) in War Anna Politkovskaya Award while giving a speech after receiving the award at the Southbank Centre in London. Malala beats Snowden, wins EU human rights prize Malala Yousafzai wins European Union’s annual human rights award in October 2013. Humanity needs more Malala Yousafzai Malala Yousafzai received Pakistan’s first National youth Peace Prize from Pakistan’s prime minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani. TTP labels Malala as ‘an American spy’? The outlawed Tehreek-eTaliban Pakistan (TTP) Tuesday defended the attack on Malala Yousafzai, rejecting that she was an innocent girl and labeling her as a US spy. The TTP spokesman said, Malala Yousafzai was ‘a spy who divulged secrets of Mujahidden and Taliban through BBC and in return received awards and rewards from the Zionists’. “She not only spied against Mujahideen but also created propaganda against them. The Gul Makai diary is an embodiment of anti-Taliban views,” he continued. “She has received the punishment for her sin.” The spokesman further said that Malala was brought before the media under a pre-planned strategy so that she could pollute the minds of the youth against the Taliban. “The other reason for the attack on Malala was her activism aimed at sparking a feud within the Islamic society of Pakhtuns. He clarified that she was not attacked for her pursuit of education. “Had it been for education, then there are scores of girls who go out

Civil Rights activist and 2011 Nobel Peace Prize winner Tawakkul Karman after being honored with the International Children’s Peace Prize. Pakistan’s Malala Yousufzai celebrates 16th birthday with UN speech Malala picks up another award to school (they would have been attacked too).” “Taliban executed the attack on an adult girl only after she emerged as a pivotal character in the media war against us,” the TTP spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan argued.

Slice the onions into thin long pieces. Finely slice ginger and garlic separately. Heat a tsp. of ghee on a tawa and roast the chilies till dark in color. Then fry the coriander seeds, garlic and ginger separately in the same way, using just 1 tsp of ghee for each ingredient. Then keep these fried spices aside. Now heat the remaining ghee and fry the onions in a large saucepan, till it turns golden brown and crisp. Soon drain it and keep them aside. Now add the cloves, cardamoms and cinnamon to the ghee and fry them. Put the mutton along with the turmeric powder and salt. Cover and cook till the meat is half cooked. In order to prevent the meat from sticking to the bottom, pour a little water on the lid of the saucepan. Use a saucepan with a plate shaped lid. Add cord and remaining spices. Mix and cook on a low heat till the meat is tender enough. As per requirement, consider adding a cup of warm water, just before serving the mix in the lemon juice and fried onion slices. Your dish is ready to be served. For best serving garnish it with chopped coriander leaves.

End the US occupation of Afghanistan Oct. 7 marks 12th anniversary of US invasion

By Nazila Bijari Oct. 7 marked the 12th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan as the occupation entered its 13th year. “Operation Enduring Freedom” has certainly endured, but it has brought not freedom but occupation and misery to the Afghan people. That the anniversary has received almost no media attention can be attributed in part to the crisis in Washington, D.C., with the government shutdown and the upcoming debt ceiling deadline. However, even prior to the current crisis in Washington, the occupation of Afghanistan was attracting little media attention. It is as if the U.S. government is exercising its “right” to occupy Afghanistan, irrespective of the immense suffering of its people. Afghanistan is currently occupied by 87,000 foreign troops—52,000 from the United States and 35,000 from its junior partners. Despite years of talk about troop reduction and a drawdown, the number of U.S. troops is still higher now than at any point in the first seven years of the occupation. In fact, it was President Barack Obama, elected on somewhat of an anti-war platform, who surged the number of U.S. troops shortly after taking office in 2009. Occupation atrocities Over these years, the U.S. occupiers have carried out unimaginable atrocities, from bombing village weddings to mowing down children playing in the fields. But there are no reliable estimates of the number of Afghan people killed in the 12 years of occupation, nor of the indirect casualties caused by the widespread destruction and a nearly non-existent public welfare infrastructure. The occupation has also taken the lives of 3,372 occupation troops, 2,144 of them U.S. military personnel, over 73 percent of which have come under the Obama presidency. In the first 10 months of 2013, at least 106 U.S. troops were killed. As high as the U.S. casualties are, these only show part of the picture. By taking the

roles of supporters and trainers, Washington has managed to get Afghan forces to absorb most of the casualties. According to U.S. Gen. Joseph Dunford, the NATO commander in Afghanistan, casualties among the Afghan forces allied with the occupation forces are often reaching 100 per week. That comes to about 5,000 per year. In a poor country with a severely depressed economy, working for the police and the military is one of the few career options available to young Afghan men, precisely the same reason youth in the U.S. join the military. The Obama administration has announced plans to reduce the number of troops to 31,000 by February 2014. December 2014 is the projected date of the U.S. withdrawal of all its forces from Afghanistan. But there are already negotiations about authorizing the stay of some numbers of troops beyond that date. The Saur Revolution In April 1979, a progressive government took power in Afghanistan in what was known as the Saur Revolution. Under the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan, the government implemented a democratic program that included land reform, growth in public services, price controls, separation of religious institutions and the state, full equality for women, legalization of trade unions, and a sweeping literacy campaign. Under U.S. President Jimmy Carter, the CIA launched a massive campaign, organizing and arming the militias of the landlords to overthrow the state. In reaction to U.S. intervention, the Afghan government requested the Soviet Union’s military assistance. But the Mujahideen, the reactionary force organized by the United States, eventually overthrew the progressive Afghan state years after the Soviets had withdrawn. Afghanistan then descended into a bloody civil war between the rival factions of the reactionary militias. This in turn led to the ascent of the Taliban, who were eventually overthrown by the 2001 U.S. inva-

sion. Afghanistan today has no immediate possibility of true democracy, because the only democracy it has known was destroyed by the United States. For the Afghan people to have any possibility of a people’s democracy, and the betterment of their life conditions, the first prerequisite is

27 Candidates nominated for 2014 Afghan Presidential Election

Oct. 5 was the deadline for the registration of candidates for next year’s elections. Twentyseven presidential candidates have registered for the elections, scheduled for April 5, 2014. But elections under occupation do not provide the possibility for the Afghan people to make real change. The last elections in 2009 fell far short of even the appearance of legitimacy. It was first announced that Hamid Karzai, the incumbent president, had received over 50 percent of the vote, hence no need for a second round. In response to evidence of widespread fraud, the election commission reduced Karzai’s votes to less than 50 percent to force a runoff, hoping to salvage some legitimacy. But Abdullah Abdullah, the second highest vote getter, refused to participate in a show runoff, citing certainty that the second round would be as marred by fraud as the first. Then, the elections were hastily canceled and Karzai declared the winner, his less than 50 percent of the vote notwithstanding. Even if “clean” elections are held, elections under occupation cannot possibly be the foundation for true democracy, rule of the people. The U.S. spreads the propaganda that it is teaching and training Afghans in democracy—it is a long and difficult process, the propaganda goes, because Afghans have never experienced democracy. The fact is that it was the U. S. government that destroyed the people’s democracy

Then the people of Afghanistan would be entitled to receive significant reparations to rebuild infrastructure that was destroyed by the12 years of U.S. occupation and the civil war before that, which was the direct result of U.S. intervention. Miracle Media Group Congratulates all Canadians of Fijian origin at the 43rd Independence day of Republic of Fiji.

Oct 10:Fiji’s 43rd Independence Day

Fiji was colonized by Britain in 1874 and gained independence on Oct. 10, 1970 and became Republic 7 October 1987. The officially Republic of Fiji, is an island country in Melanesia in the South Pacific Ocean about 2,000 km; northeast of New Zealand’s North Island. Its closest neighbours are Vanuatu to the west, France’s New Caledonia to the southwest, New Zealand’s Kermadec to the southeast, Tonga to the east, the Samoas, France’s Wallis and Futuna to the northeast and Tuvalu to the north. The country comprises an archipelago of more than 332 islands, of which 110 are permanently inhabited, and more than 500 islets, amounting to a total land area of circa 18,300 square kilometres. The furthest island is Onu-i-Lau. The two major islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, account for 87% of the population of almost 850,000. The former contains Suva, the capital and largest city. Most Fijians, i.e. three-quarters, live on Viti Levu’s coasts, either in Suva or in smaller urban centres like Nadi (tourism) or Lautoka(sugar cane industry). Viti Levu’s interior is sparsely inhabited due to its terrain.

History Pottery art from Fijian towns shows that Fiji was settled before or around 3500 to 1000 BC, although the question of Pacific migration still lingers. It is believed that the Lapita people or the ancestors of the Polynesians settled the islands first but not much is known of what became of them after the Melanesians arrived; they may have had some influence on the new culture, and archaeological evidence shows that they would have then moved on to Tonga, Samoa and even Hawaii. The majority of Fiji’s islands were formed through volcanic activity starting around 150 million years ago. Today, some geothermal activity still occurs on the islands of Vanua Levu and Taveuni. Fiji has been inhabited since the second millennium BC.In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Dutch and the British explored Fiji, which was a Crown Colony until 1970, this administration lasting almost a century. During World War II, thousands of Fijians volunteered to aid in Allied efforts via their attachment to the New Zealand and Australian army units. the Prime Minister of Fiji is the head of government, the President the head of state, and of a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the Parliament of Fiji. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. Since independence there have been four coups in Fiji, two in 1987, one in 2000 and one in late 2006. The military has been either ruling directly, or heavily influencing governments since 1987.

in 1987 and one in 2000. The commodore took over the powers of the presidency and dissolved the parliament, paving the way for the military to continue the takeover. The coup was the culmination of weeks of speculation following conflict between the elected prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, and Commodore Bainimarama. Bainimarama had repeatedly issued demands and deadlines to the prime minister. At particular issue was previously pending legislation to pardon those involved in the 2000 coup. Bainimarama named Jona Senilagakali caretaker prime minister. The next week Bainimarama said he would ask the Great Council of Chiefs to restore executive powers to president, Ratu Josefa Iloilo. On 10 April 2009, President Iloilo suspended the Constitution of Fiji, dismissed the Court of Appeal and, in his own words, “appointed himself as the Head of the State of Fiji under a new legal order”. As President, Iloilo had been Head of State prior to his abrogation of the Constitution, but that position had been determined by the Constitution itself. The “new legal order” did not depend on the Constitution, thus requiring a “reappointment” of the head of State. “You will agree with me that this is the best way forward for our beloved Fiji”, he said. Bainimarama was re-appointed as Interim Prime Minister; he, in turn, re-instated his previous cabinet. On 1 September 2009, Fiji was suspended from the Commonwealth of Nations. The action was taken because Cdre. Bainimarama failed to hold elections by 2010 as the Commonwealth of Nations had demanded after the 2006 coup. Cdre. Bainimarama stated a need for more time to end a voting system that heavily favoured ethnic Fijians at the expense of the multi-ethnic minorities. Critics, however, claimed that he had suspended the constitution and was responsible for human rights violations by arresting and detaining opponents. In his 2010 New Year’s address, Cdre. Bainimarama announced the lifting of the Public Emergency Regulations (PER). The PER had been put in place since April 2009, when the former constitution was abrogated. The former had allowed restrictions on some public gatherings and speech, censorship of news media reports and gave security forces added powers. He had also announced the nationwide consultation process leading to the new Constitution under which the 2014 elections will be held.

Fiji’s culture is a rich mosaic of Indigenous Fijian, Indo-Fijian, Asian and European traditions, comprising social policy, language, food (based mainly from the sea, plus casava, dalo (taro) & other vegetables), costume, belief systems, architecture, arts, craft, music, dance and sports. Indigenous Fijian culture and tradition is very vibrant and is an integral component of everyday life for the majority of Fiji’s population. However, Fijian society has also evolved over the past century with the introduction of more recent traditions, such as Indian and Chinese, as well as heavy influences from Europe and Fiji’s Pacific neighbours – particularly Tonga and Samoa. Thus, the various cultures of Fiji have come together to create a unique multicultural national identity. Fiji’s culture was showcased at the World Exposition held in Vancouver, Canada in 1986 and, more recently, at the Shanghai World Expo 2010, along with other Pacific countries in the Pacific Pavilion. Tourism Fiji has a significant amount of tourism with the popular regions being Nadi, the Coral Coast, Denarau Island, and Mamanuca Islands. The biggest sources of international visitors by country are Australia, New Zealand and the USA. Fiji has a significant amount of soft coral reefs, and scuba diving is a common tourist activity.

PAKISTAN

The Pakistan economy: Challenges and prospects

By :Syed Asad Hussain In Pakistan, emphasis of all economics policies is aimed at managing the demand side of the economy whilst ignoring the supply-side factors. Socioeconomic indicators, such as infrastructure, skilled/ educated human resource, technology, investment policies, cost of doing business and economic governance have shown anomalous behavior in the past-years. As a consequence, growth process has sapped and the economy is now more despondent. Pakistan has many challenges to face. Out of 142 countries, the Global Competitiveness Report 2011/12, ranks Pakistan at 118th place, India 91 and Bangladesh 108. Pakistan score 107 in institution quality, infrastructure 115, education & training 122, goods market efficiency 93, labor market efficiency 136, financial markets developments 70, technology readiness 115, innovation 75 and market size 30. Split vision of Pakistani rulers; nation’s inability and unwillingness to actively participate throughout the economic growth process; and vested interests of some powerful business and political groups are main causes of low rankings. Sadly speaking, economic policies, instead of improving the quality of life of Pakistanis, have promoted mostly inefficiency across the economy and encouraged emergence of rent-seeking syndromes. Furthermore, power shortage, poor knowledge base about innovation and productivity, deteriorating work ethics across the labor market, highly politicized, corrupt, inefficient Public Sector Enterprises are some major impediments to the growth process. Given the large market size of Pakistan’s economy, which is ranked at 30th place in the world has yet a lot to offer. In fact, it augments the argument that a large domes-

tic market size such as India and China, along with increasing middle class and buying power, is itself is a blessing in disguised and provides natural economies of scale to producers. Regrettably, in the absence of effective competitive environment, Pakistani firms have shown least interest in R & D and business sophistication-two main pillars of competitiveness. Pakistani consumers, with a low level of awareness and despicable buying power, are not much demanding either. Protections, subsides and other

sectors is painfully low when compared with other regional economies, such as India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Economic managers should place a greater emphasis on improving the supply-side factors, such as; power shortage, literacy rate; use of obsolete technology and labor productivity. According to the Planning Commission findings, the unachieved potential in the agriculture sector is in between 67-84 percent. Their findings suggest main impediments to agriculture sector performance are; old framing techniques, decaying ir-

concessions given during the past, have slowed the innovation process in Pakistani public and private sector. It is said that Pakistan’s economy must continue to grow at a rate of 6-8 percent if the GDP is to be doubled in the next 10 years. However, the stop-go performance of Pakistan’s economy has suffocated the process of alleviating poverty and improving the standard of living of Pakistanis-as a consequence; deep cracks across the economy are visible. On the supply side, the economy needs to increase investment in human resource to improve the labor productivity. Agriculture, manufacturing and services are the main sectors pulling the economy. To drive these sectors in the top gear, educated and skilled human resource is a must. Unfortunately, the overall productivity of the above

rigation methods, high input costs, and insufficient institutional credit for poor farmers. Findings also indicate that during the 1990s, Total Factor Productivity growth (portion of growth that is not explained by factor labor and capital accumulation) was just 1.6 percent, which increased by merely 0.9 percent during 1998/2007. As estimated by the Ministry of Industries, there existed 51 percent excess capacity within the manufacturing sector, which is an indication of underutilization of resources and depressed demand. Furthermore, the current power crisis has eaten up 2.5 percent of GDP as estimated by the Ministry of Finance. Pakistan must address these issues seriously without which the economy cannot move forward. Real investment, the key driver in creating jobs, is yet to come out of the woods. Fur-

thermore, savings which feed into investment have remained low against the world average-for every one hundred rupee income, saving is only Rs 10.7, on average. How can Pakistan’s economy get on the growth path? Well, building the knowledge-based economy driven by technology and innovation should be the broader objective of all the stakeholders. Creative, intelligent and wise minds can improve the efficiency and efficacy of the production side of the economy without putting extra stress on the resource market. Hence knowledge creation is the key driver in pulling the economy out of the slowgrowth rut. To meet this end and improve the labor-market efficiency, a strong nexus of industry and academia is needed. Pakistan can replicate success stories from other countries. In conclusion, the high-growth momentum and competitive domestic markets are pre-requisites to alleviate poverty and standard of living of Pakistanis. There can be substantial transformation in goods and labor market if growth is sustained in the long run. China and India are good lessons to learn. Their economies have grown in double-digit figure for many years, which has helped reduce poverty levels and has given birth to one of the largest expanding middle-class in the world. Like Indian and Chinese businesses, Pakistani firms must learn to effectively compete domestically first and be engaged in innovation before they start competing globally. As millions of fresh Pakistani graduates join the labor force every year, it becomes increasingly important for Pakistan to sustain 6-7 percent economic growth for a longer period of time and continue to create jobs for youths. If the will of political leadership exists, then the task of achieving high sustainable growth can become much easier. Miracle’s welcomes his new addition in its contributors. May 11 elections: Massive vote fraud uncovered in NA-256 The National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has unearthed massive rigging in the National Assembly constituency, NA-265 (Karachi), in the May 11 elections. According to a report submitted by the authority before an election tribunal on Monday, over 57,000 votes could not be verified in the constituency where 5,893 duplicate and 1,950 fake votes were cast. Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s Iqbal Muhammad Ali had won the seat, defeating Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Muhammad Zubair Khan, who later challenged the result of 67 polling stations before the election tribunal. Subsequently, the tribunal head, Zafar Ahmed Khan Sherwani, ordered Nadra on August 20 to verify the thumb impressions of the voters. Complying with the tribunal’s direction, Nadra examined and compared the election material, including the statement of count and used counterfoils and photo electoral rolls at the polling stations to determine authenticity of the votes cast. Rigging 6815 VOTES were found authentic in the comparison process In its report, NADRA said the authority

had received election material of 84,748 votes that were cast in the polling stations. During the examination and comparison process, 314 used counterfoils were found without fingerprints at polling station No 178 (66 votes) and polling station No 180 (21 votes). A total of 6,815 votes were found authentic in the comparison process conducted with the help of the Automated Fingerprint Integrated System (AFIS), the report said. This means the fingerprints affixed on the counterfoil at the time of issuance of ballot papers correctly matched with fingerprint data of voters held with NADRA in the citizens database against the same Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) number. “It was observed that one individual voted against multiple registered voters. For example one Waseem Anwar Hussain, a resident of Shah Faisal Colony, polled 35 votes at polling station No 54 against the registered voters,” according to the report. According to the Nadra, invalid CNICs were mentioned on 11,343 used counterfoils, while 791 votes were found to be out of the consistency The report said a large number of the fin-

gerprints on the used counterfoils could not be processed with the AFIS. Therefore, as many as 57,642 bad quality fingerprints on the used counterfoils could not be verified during the verification process. However, the CNIC numbers mentioned in such counterfoils were valid, and belonged to the same constituency, it added. According to NADRA, invalid CNICs were mentioned on 11,343 used counterfoils, while 791 votes were found to be out of the constituency. The report said duplicate voters’ fingerprints were found on 5,893 used counterfoils, while 314 used counterfoils lacked mandatory fingerprints of the voters. As many as 1,950 used counterfoils and the electoral rolls failed the fingerprints authentication process. This is the second consecutive case, wherein massive irregularities and violations of the election laws have been detected by NADRA. Earlier the authority had found that many bogus votes were cast during the May 11 elections in NA-258 (Karachi). Setback to PML-N Over in Faisalabad, the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz suffered a huge setback in the recent by-elections for PP-

72 at the hands of PTI. The constituency was considered a stronghold of the PML-N as its candidates have won this seat in four consecutive elections in 1997, 2002, 2008 and 2013. In the May 11 elections, PML-N’s Khawaja Muhammad Islam won the seat. However, he was disqualified for submitting a fake degree and the Election Commission of Pakistan announced by-polls in the constituency. In by-elections held on October 7, PML-N fielded Khwaja Muhammad’s brother Khawaja Liaqat against PTI’s Sheikh Khurram Shehzad. According to unofficial results, the PTI candidate bagged 23,972 votes against 18,256 of his rival. Published in The Express Tribune, October 8th

LIFE

STYLE

A nap a day keeps underachievement at bay Many people have the habit of taking a short sleep during the day, also known as napping. To many people this habit is connected to their ability to achieve their daily tasks. Many medical studies conducted to gage the effects of napping in general concluded that there was a direct relationship between napping during the daytime and the mental capabilities of students. Young students can benefit from napping, provided they are aware of certain factors and recommendations. Dr. Mohammed Al-Halawani, who works for Dr. Sulaiman Al-Habib medical group, answered our questions about napping and its influence on people: What is napping? Napping is when a person rests and sleeps for a period of between 10 and 30 minutes. It definitely helps students and teenagers to get the rest their bodies need. Studies have also shown that napping helps to reduce the chances of heart attacks, strokes, stress and depression. It has also been proven to regulate heartbeat and breathing. Naps between 10 and 30 minutes are the norm, which helps revitalize the brain and improve memory. Any time longer than that would lead to laziness and sluggishness, since the sleeper reaches deep sleep after 30 minutes. If one wakes up before getting enough deep sleep, he or she would be sluggish, which is a normal physiological phase after waking up suddenly from deep sleep. It affects concentration and mental abilities anywhere from a few seconds to 30 minutes. When are the best and worst times to nap? This differs from one person to another, depending on what time they wake up and

when they go to sleep at night, and it also depends on each person’s biological clock. When a person feels sleepy, whether at night or during the day, their body temperature decreases, and this may happen any time between noon and 5 p.m. cording to each person’s sleeping pattern, and how much sleep they got the night before. However, it is usually hard to nap two to four hours before night time. In short, it is hard to pinpoint the exact time preferable for a nap for everyone in general. When is a nap necessary? A nap is necessary if a person has not had enough sleep the night before. Studies also have shown that napping has many benefits, it improves a person’s mood, decreases tiredness and sleepiness, stimulates the brain into better functioning while tackling logical or mathematical problems, and improves a person’s reaction. If sleepy, taking a nap has proven to be much better than consuming caffeine or stimulating drugs. In fact, taking a nap helps in regulating the functions of the body. How does napping affect students? Napping can be positive for students, especially after suffering from mental stress, which can afflict them after a long day at school. It will help their brain recuperate and then they can go back with renewed mental vigor to recall lessons and process information much better, which in turn will enhance their overall academic achievements. However, napping could also have a negative impact. That can happen if napping time exceeds half an hour, resulting in deep sleep. After a long nap, a person could suffer from a bad mood, laziness and poor

uneasiness. The pancreas does not function properly and this affects the metabolism. • Mothers should encourage their children to do some activity after meals and before taking naps. It is best not to allow them to nap for too long, since that also disrupts night time sleep. Source: Arabnews.com

Small Business Month – supported by RBC, Newton mental alertness. It can also have a negative effect if the nap is taken immediately after a heavy meal or very late in the afternoon. Does napping replace a good night’s sleep? Yes, napping can compensate for fewer hours of sleep at night, but there is a limit, since night time sleep is very necessary for the body and mind to rest, recuperate and function properly. General warnings and precautions: • Families make several mistakes when it comes to allowing their children to take naps, such as telling them to do so after eating a heavy lunch, which is medically a big mistake. After eating, the body needs all its energy to digest food, but if a person sleeps immediately after a meal, the digestive system becomes sluggish, including the brain and blood circulation and food is not digested properly. Therefore, it is best to have a light meal before a nap. • In fact, the problem with taking a nap right after a heavy meal does not only affect digestion, it could also cause nightmares and

New HIV test in BC helps reduce disease spread: Study British Columbia will be the first in Canada to use a new, more accurate HIV detection test following the results of a BC Centre for Disease Control study which found nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) greatly improved the diagnosis of early or acute HIV infection. The study released today in the AIDS Journal estimated that between 25 and 75 new HIV infections were avoided as a result of a pilot program that has introduced and promoted the pooled NAAT method since April 2009 at six clinics accessed by gay and bisexual men in Vancouver. Pooled NAAT detects the virus as soon as

Statement on World Mental Health Day New Democrat mental health critic Sue Hammell issued the following statement recognizing World Mental Health Day: “October 10, is World Mental Health Day, a day when people all over the world are encouraged to have a conversation about mental health. These conversations are an essential part of breaking down the stigma of mental illness, and sharing strategies for maintaining positive mental health. “This year, World Mental Health Day is focused on mental health and aging adults. It is estimated that approximately 15 per cent of adults over the age of 60 suffer from a mental disorder, with the most common being depression and dementia. As a society, we must work diligently to promote positive mental health by supporting active and healthy aging in our communities. “Education and awareness are essential to creating a world in which mental illness is treated with the same degree of compassion and care as any other illness. There are many organizations working towards this goal in B.C., and providing accessible help for British Columbians of all ages. “Several of these organizations are coming together to host Beyond the Blues: Depression Anxiety Education and Screening Day, part of Mental Illness Awareness Week. In locations throughout the province, anyone with questions about their mental health can do a series of self-tests to learn more, and discuss the results in a free and anonymous appointment with a clinician. These events will continue throughout the fall. “We can’t prevent or treat mental illness if we don’t understand it, but we can start to build understanding with something as simple as a conversation. Today, make time to talk to someone you love about mental health. It could be the beginning of positive change in their life and your own.”

one to two weeks after the virus enters the body, compared to up to four weeks using standard HIV testing. During this very early stage of infection, people have a greater risk of transmitting HIV to others. As most patients with a new diagnosis change their behaviours and access HIV treatment, improving the diagnosis of acute HIV can help prevent new infections and reduce HIV transmission, which also lowers longterm costs to the health care system. The study also concluded that the combination of pooled NAAT and social marketing campaigns was found to be highly effective in almost doubling the rate of acute

HIV detection in the clinics, resulting in a 12 per cent increase in the total number of HIV diagnoses. In total, 25 men with acute HIV were diagnosed by pooled NAAT who otherwise would have received a negative result. As a result of the success of the pilot program, the BC Public Health Microbiology and Reference Laboratory will maintain pooled NAAT at these clinic sites in Vancouver following the successful pilot program, and is collaborating with BCCDC to implement the test method at other clinics in the province. This research was funded through the Ca-

nadian Institutes of Health Research and supported through the provincial STOP HIV/AIDS program. The investment of the provincial government in the STOP HIV/ AIDS program and initiatives such as this has helped to increase the uptake of HIV testing and diagnosis and has improved the connection to HIV care and treatment.

Hafeez axed for South Africa Tests

Mohammad Hafeez has been dropped for Pakistan’s Test series against South Africa in the UAE. Fast bowler Mohammad Irfan has made a return in the 12-man squad named by the PCB. The board will expand the squad to 15 following Pakistan A’s match against the touring South Africans, between October 8 and 10, in Sharjah. Hafeez was expected to miss out, given his poor form in Test cricket this year. He has aggregated 102 runs in 10 Test innings this year, and was particularly exposed against the moving ball by

Dale Steyn on Pakistan’s tour to South Africa in February. Pakistan have not played top-level opposition in Test cricket since, but Hafeez’s struggles in the long format continued against Zimbabwe in September - he scored 59 in four Test innings on that tour, despite being the Man of the Series in the ODIs. Pacer Wahab Riaz also misses out from the squad that played the Zimbabwe Tests. Pakistan had drawn that series 1-1, with Zimbabwe recording their first win against Pakistan in 15 years in the second Test. Against South Africa in

February, Pakistan had lost the Tests 0-3. Irfan had featured in that series, but missed out in Zimbabwe; now he returns. Batsmen Asad Shafiq, Faisal Iqbal and Shan Masood, and seamer Eshan Adil, also miss out from the squad that played Zimbabwe, but unlike Riaz and Hafeez, they were named in the Pakistan A squad for game against the South Africans, so they could still feature in the final Test 15 if they impress in that match. Shafiq is most likely to be one of the three players added to the squad. The only new face in the squad is left-arm

spinner Zulfiqar Babar. Babar, 34, has been part of the domestic circuit for more than ten years and featured in T20s previously, but is yet to debut in Test cricket for Pakistan. The team management is mulling playing three spinners in the line-up, and so Babar could fit in alongside Saeed Ajmal and Abdur Rehman. Fast bowler Umar Gul, who was targetting a comeback against South Africa after being sidelined by a knee injury since March, is yet to return. Source: Cricinfo

‘Torts won’t let us quit’: The Tortorella effect is taking shape in Vancouver

If you were to map a successful John Tortorella launch, it might look a lot like the Canucks first week of the season. A 3-1 record with an uptempo, high-event approach Tortorella summed up this way: “I don’t believe in counter-punching. I believe in inflicting.” Oh yes, that quote will resonate in Vancouver. So will the pair of gut-check, come-from-behind wins, as long as you don’t spend too much time patting down the rosters the New Jersey Devils and Calgary Flames have been rolling out. (Hint, you’d feel a lot of cold garbage.) Three early wins against bad teams aren’t going to help the Canucks brass, which hired Tortorella at some risk, sleep at night. But it’s better than the alternative. “It’s better than 1-3, where I think people would second-guess a lot of things,” Chris Higgins said.

“But there’s a long way to go.” Sure is. Lose to San Jose Thursday, and make it nine straight losses to the Sharks, and the Canucks will be seen as a team still spinning its tires. But there is at least evidence now the Canucks have overcome their first obstacle to this season. That was always going to be embracing a new coach who is nothing like the old one. That hasn’t been a problem. The Sedins have been gushing about everything Tortorella, including his shot-blocking demands and continuous line-changing. Players seem to believe there is a “Torts effect” that can push them when they’re losing. Roberto Luongo put it this way on TSN: “Torts won’t let us quit.” Some may take comments like this, and ones on the line-changing and the aggressive forecheck, which have been coming from Vancouver’s lead-

ership, as swipes at Alain Vigneault. But I’m unconvinced that’s what’s going on here. This is an aging core, with a closing window of opportunity to win, in need of something to believe in. For now, they believe in Tortorella. It seems the coach who reportedly lost the locker-room in New York has been making it easy on them here to start. The guy with the hard-ass, bully reputation has kept things positive more often than not to start his Canucks career. “He really builds you up before games and in-between periods,” Jason Garrison said. “He’s a very good motivator. “You get pumped up. He’s very good at it. It’s a lot of fun listening to him.” Tortorella is Johnny Goodtimes? Players in the lockerroom are having a lot of fun? Yeah, didn’t see that coming. What was predictable was Tortorella’s hands-

on approach to in-game coaching. He has an incessant need to linechange. “If you like playing together, you better show the coach,” Higgins said. Tortorella will bury his fourth line, nightly. And he’ll ride his best players, hard. He will use timeouts, and called one late in Tuesday’s win against the Devils during a power play to get the Sedins more ice time. Tortorella has made good on his promise to promote players who are excelling. Mike Santorelli has worked his way from a bubble player to third-line centre, to where he is now, on the top line with the Sedins. Alex Edler was having a good game Tuesday and ended up playing more than 11 minutes in the third. The players seem convinced he’s had a significant role in both comeback wins. “For sure he did,” Garrison said. “He’s come into the

periods and told us what we’re doing wrong and told us what we need to do be better. “It’s up to us to do that. “He’s very easy to talk to and he gets his point across. “Just don’t do anything to aggravate him.” It wasn’t a given that a veteran team which has won a lot of regular games over the years would be accepting of the Tortorella way. But Kevin Bieksa said this team was hungry for it. “You see a lot of times he’ll stop the practice and teach,” Bieksa said. “We’re taking it all in. There is pride in the room. But everyone has checked their egos. Everyone is willing to learn because everyone knows they can get better. “When you have all of your top guys willing to be coached, it funnels down.” Tortorella dismissed the notion he had any impact in the comeback wins against Calgary and New Jersey. “I think coaches have too big a role in wins and in losses,” Tortorella said. “Coaches are just guidance counsellors.” Sure. Tortorella is just a really expensive guidance counsellor. Source: Vancouver Sun
