One of the economic effects of a sinking loonie could be less crossborder shopping, as cheaper U.S. goods become more expensive in Canadian dollar terms
LOONIE’S DECLINE COULD BOOST B.C. TOURISM
British Columbia’s tourism sector received two late gifts this week- fresh snow on local mountains and a Canadian dollar that has dropped in value, which makes local destinations more attractive to foreign travellers. However, it will take longer for that latter factor to have an economic impact, the size of which will depend on how deeply the dollar drops versus the U.S. greenback. The dollar edged down 0.27 of a cent to 92.56 cents US in currency trading
Wednesday, its lowest close since late October 2009, after falling more than a cent Tuesday. This week’s sharp drop was precipitated by weaker-than-expected Canadian trade figures released Tuesday, but it is at the end of an almostyear-long decline from February 2013, the last time the Canadian and U.S. dollars were at par. AFRICAN MIGRANTS PROTEST ISRAEL DETENTION LAW
Thousands of African migrants have continued to march in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv, appealing for the support of Western governments against Israel’s detention policy towards migrants who entered the country illegally. Protesters held banners reading “No more prison” and “We are refugees” outside Western embassies for the third consecutive day on Tuesday, with leaders at the rally saying they would persist with demonstrations until Israel cancelled legislation enabling long-term detentions and reviewed their requests for refugee status. Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli prime minister, said on Monday that the protests would not affect his government’s stance on asylum seekers. “Just as we’ve succeeded in blocking off illegal infiltrations thanks to the security fence, we’re determined to send back those who made it in before the border was closed,” he told members of his rightwing Likud party. A police spokesman told news agency AFP that the protesters were coordinating with police on their plan to stage more rallies on Wednesday, this time in Jerusalem. Their plight prompted a strongly worded statement from the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), saying that Israel’s incarceration of migrants, caused “hardship and suffering” and was “not in line with” a 1951 world treaty on the treatment of refugees. “Placing asylum-seekers in duress that may force them to opt to return without having examined their asylum claims could amount to a violation” of international refugee conventions, Walpurga Englbrecht, the UNHCR representative in Israel, said in a statement on Sunday. Englbrecht criticised Israel’s

Zardari corruption reference next hearing on Jan 18
An accountability court in Islamabad adjourned the hearing of the corruption references filed against former president Asif Ali Zardari until Jan 18 after he made a brief appearance before the bench hearing the case on Thursday. The former president appeared before accountability court Judge Mohammad Bashir amid strict security measures with a heavy deployment of policemen around the court premises. Talking to media persons after the hearing Zardari’s chief defence counsel Farooq H. Naek said that the court was expected to indict his client today in two of the references faced by him. Naek further said that he requested the court for permission to present his arguments over the indictment which

would now be presented on Jan 18. Zaradri was earlier summoned in five references filed by NAB but did not appear before the court due to security issues and presidential immunity when he was in office. References against Mr Zardari were made by Ehtesab Bureau — the previous version of National Accountability Bureau — which pursued these cases in 1997 when Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif headed the government. His cases were reopened in October when NAB pleaded that his immunity had ended after he had stepped down. The references filed against the former president are: Polo ground case: This reference builds upon the construction of a polo ground along with ancillary works at the Prime Minister House, which NAB says are illegal and in violation of the rights and privileges afforded to him. SGS: This corruption case is the continuance of a reference filed in 1997 that accused the late Benazir Bhutto and her spouse Zardari to have gained off a contract between the SGS and the government. ARY: This reference revolves around granting of trade licenses to ARY Traders for importing gold and silver which NAB says has caused losses to the treasury. Ursus tractors: This reference deals with alleged corruption during the import of Russian and Polish tractors. Cotecna: This case is about the award of a contract to the Swiss company after allegedly receiving six per cent bribe on the revenue proceeds. Dawn News reported

4 I N T E R N A T I O N A L Iran’s Rouhani Defends Removal of Syria’s Chemical Weapons Begins Nuclear Deal Rabi ul Awal 8, 1435 H January 10, 2014
Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has defended a nuclear deal with world powers amid continued domestic criticism. Rouhani said on Tuesday that the deal, which promises moderate sanction relief in return for temporarily curbing Iran’s nuclear drive, would not be derailed by opposition in government. “It required brave decision-making ... We should not and do not fear the fuss made by the few people or a small percentage”, Rouhani said in remarks broadcast live on state television. “The initial agreement with the six major powers on the nuclear issue was not a simple task but very difficult and complicated,” he said. Rouhani’s defence came after repeated criticism by opposition in parliament and the powerful Revolutionary Guards of the deal signed in November. The agreement requires Iran to roll back parts of its nuclear drive for six months, in exchange for modest sanctions relief and a promise by Western powers not
to impose new sanctions. Critics have primarily questioned if the Islamic Republic benefits from the deal, and if fewer concessions could have been made by the negotiating team, led by Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran’s foreign minister. In recent weeks, elements in the conservative-dominated parliament have sought to form a committee to supervise the negotiating process but to no avail. However, Rouhani appears to enjoy the backing of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who retains control of all final decisions regarding the matter. “In all important and sensitive steps along the way, the supreme leader has backed the government and its policies,” Rouhani said. Iran’s economy has been hard hit by international sanctions, while the vital oil exports have been more than halved by US and European embargoes. The deal - which is yet to come into forceis aimed at creating a window of diplomatic opportunity for Iran and the P5+1 group of world powers, comprising the US, Britain, France, China and Russia plus Germany, to find a lasting solution to the decade-long standoff over Iran’s nuclear activities. In Tehran, meanwhile, legislators are readying a bill that would oblige the government to enrich uranium to 60 percent if Iran is hit by new sanctions. Talks to remove remaining obstacles before the deal is implemented will resume in Geneva, Switzerland, on Thursday. Source: Al-Jazeera
Hamas allows Fatah Members Back into Gaza
Hamas’ prime minister has announced that hundreds of members of Fatah, the group’s main political rivals, could return to the Gaza Strip after being exiled from the coastal Palestinian territory since 2007. Ismail Haniyeh told reporters on Monday that all Fatah members, except those accused of killing Hamas members during factional violence that broke out in 2007, could return to Gaza “without any preconditions”. Fatah lawmakers who are based in the occupied West Bank are now welcome to visit the Gaza Strip, while some imprisoned Fatah members would be released from prisons in the coming days, Haniyeh added. “We have promised our people to take decisions that would reinforce the internal [Palestinian] front and pave the way for reconciliation,” he said. Hamas and Fatah, the two main Palestinian political factions, have been divided since factional fighting broke out after Hamas’ victory in Palestinian legislative council elections in 2006. Since then, Hamas has been in control of the besieged Gaza Strip, while the US-backed Palestinian Authority has ruled over the occupied West Bank. A Fatah spokesman dismissed Haniyeh’s announcement as “superficial” and called on
Hamas to implement past accords on Palestinian unity. “What the Palestinian people really want is a genuine end to the division. They want unity, the formation of a government, lifting Hamas’s veto on national elections and carrying through on what it agreed on in the past,” Ahmed Assaf told Reuters news agency. Hamas and Fatah leaders committed to an Egyptian-backed reconciliation deal in 2011, but the division persists amid disputes over power-sharing and finding a common strategy in the conflict with Israel. Both parties have been accused by human rights groups of carrying out wide-scale arrests of each other’s members and abusing them while in detention. Hamas’ step towards reconciliation comes at a time when the Gaza Strip is suffering from harsh economic and political isolation caused by an Egyptian-Israeli-imposed siege on the territory. Hamas also suffered a heavy blow when Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas ally, was toppled in a military coup last July. The Egyptian army has destroyed hundreds of tunnels used to smuggle fuel and goods into the blockaded Gaza Strip since Morsi’s overthrow. Source: Al-Jazeera
Syria has started moving chemical weapons materials out of the country in a crucial phase of an internationally backed disarmament programme that has been delayed by war and technical problems. The joint mission overseeing the disarmament, the UN and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), said on Tuesday that the materials had been moved from two sites to the port of Latakia and then loaded onto a Danish commercial vessel. “This is an important step commencing the transportation of these materials as part of the plan to complete their disposal outside the territory of Syria,’’ Mehmet Uzumcu, OPCW director-general, said in a statement. “I encourage the Syrian government to maintain the momentum to remove the remaining priority chemicals, in a safe and timely manner, so that they can be destroyed outside of Syria as quickly as possible.’” In separate interview with Al Jazeera, Sigrid Kaag, joint mission coordinator for the UN and OPCW, said the first shipment indicates the progress is being made. “It is first in a series of moves that the Syrian authorities are expected to undertake to ensure that all chemical agents will be taken out of the country,” Kaag said. Syria agreed to abandon its chemical weapons by June under a deal proposed by Russia and agreed with the United States after an Aug. 21 sarin gas attack that Western nations blamed on President Bashar al-Assad’s forces. Damascus blames rebels for the attack. Wash-
ington welcomed the removal of chemical materials and said Assad’s government appeared to be sticking to the deal. “Much more needs to be done,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told a news briefing, adding, “We have no reason to believe that the regime has gone back on any aspect of their promise.” China, Denmark, Norway and Russia are providing maritime security for the cargo. The removal was due to take place before December 31, but Syria’s worsening conflict, logistical problems and bad weather had delayed the operation. The year-end deadline for the removal of weapons components was the first major milestone under a UN Security Council-backed deal arranged by Russia and the US that aims to eliminate all of Syria’s chemical arms by the middle of this year. Under the plan, the chemicals will be taken from the Syrian port of Latakia to a port in Italy, where they will be transferred to a US navy vessel, the Cape Ray, which is fitted with equipment to destroy them at sea. The OPCW turned to the US military for assistance after no country volunteered to destroy the chemical weapons on its soil, despite an international consensus that the weapons be neutralised outside Syria. The US-Russia deal was aimed at heading off US military strikes against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime after hundreds of people were killed last August in a chemical weapons attack outside Damascus. US sends troops and tanks to South Korea
The United States is to deploy more troops and heavy tanks in South Korea as part of a military rebalance at a time of raised tensions on the Korean peninsula. Forty M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks, 800 soldiers and 40 Bradley fighting vehicles from the 1st US Cavalry Division will be sent on deployment in February, the Pentagon announced on Wednesday. South Korea’s Yonhap news agency quoted military officials as saying that the new troops and materiel would be deployed in North Gyeonggi Province, just south of the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas. The deployment comes at a time of raised tensions on the peninsula after the North’s young leader, Kim JongUn, executed his powerful uncle last month, the biggest upheaval inside the ruling dynasty for years. The North under Jong-Un has continued to develop nuclear weapons and test missiles in defiance of UN resolutions. Commenting on the deployment, John Kerry, the US secretary of state, said: “The United States and the Republic of Korea stand very firmly united, without an inch
of daylight between us, not a sliver of daylight, on the subject of opposition to North Korea’s destabilising nuclear and ballistic missile programmes and proliferation activities. Army Colonel Steve Warren said: “This addition is part of the rebalance to the Pacific. It’s been long planned and is part of our enduring commitment to security on the Korean peninsula. “This gives the commanders in Korea an additional capacity: two companies of tanks, two companies of Bradleys.” The US has 28,000 troops based in South Korea, which has remained technically at war with Communist North Korea since the 1950-1953 Korean conflict ended in stalemate. A Pentagon spokesman said the additional equipment would be left behind after the nine-month deployment to be used by follow-on rotations of US forces. Barack Obama, the US president, announced a strategic rebalancing of priorities toward the Pacific in late 2011 while winding down US commitments in Iraq and Afghanistan. Source: Al-Jazeera

Dozens killed in air assault on Iraqi city
The fight to control Iraq’s biggest province, Anbar, has intensified, with air attacks by the military killing dozens of people and the army preparing for an assault on a second city controlled by al-Qaeda linked fighters. Missile strikes on Ramadi, capital of the western province, killed 25 people on Tuesday, according to an Iraqi Defence Ministry spokesman, while Fallujah remained deserted as residents fled the violence and the army prepared to launch an operation to regain control of it. “It is not possible to attack [Fallujah] now” due to concerns about civilian casualties, Staff LieutenantGeneral Mohammed al-Askari, a Defence Ministry spokesman, told AFP news agency. Al-Qaeda-linked fighters belonging to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), who now control Fallujah, have warned local people that they would be targeted if they supported the Iraqi government. Nevertheless, military reinforcements are preparing for a full-on offensive, with the help of some of the local tribal fighters. Early on Tuesday, three loud explosions were heard outside Fallujah, a witness said, while the army deployed reinforcements. “Today, the army sent new reinforcements, including tanks and vehicles, to an area about 15km
east of Fallujah,” a police captain told AFP. Soldiers are being kept on standby while the government waits to see if the tribes allow the army to enter Fallujah. Nouri al-Maliki, the Iraqi prime minister, has called on residents to expel ISIL fighters and stave off a military offensive. However, Sheikh Ali alHammad, a senior tribal leader, told AFP on Monday that ISIL fighters had left Fallujah, and that it was now in the hands of tribesmen. Attacking Fallujah, a Sunni-majority city, would be extremely politically sensitive, as it could further inflame tensions between members of Iraq’s Sunni Arab minority and the Shia-led government. Even so, Mowaffak al-Rubaie, a former Iraqi national security adviser, struck a confident note in an interview to Al Jazeera from Baghdad on Tuesday. “Fallujah is encircled now by the Iraqi security forces and the army. There will be a real graveyard for al-Qaeda in Fallujah,” he said. “This is not a Shia-versusSunni fight; it is a fight between a constitutionally elected government in Baghdad and al-Qaeda terrorists in Anbar province. The immediate cause of the unrest in Anbar was the December 28 arrest of a Sunni politician sought on terrorism charges, followed by the government’s dismantling of
an anti-government Sunni protest camp in Ramadi. Parts of Ramadi and all of Fallujah were seized by al-Qaeda-linked fighters last week - the first time they have exercised such open control in major cities since the height of the Sunni insurgency that followed the 2003 US-led invasion. Overnight, security forces and allied tribesmen sought to retake south Ramadi from fighters loyal to ISIL, but the assault failed. “Security forces and armed tribesmen tried last night to enter areas controlled by ISIL fighters in the south of the city,” a police captain in Ramadi told AFP on Tuesday. “Clashes between the two
sides began about 11pm (2000 GMT) last night and continued until 6am,” he said, adding that “security forces were not able to enter these areas and ISIL fighters are still in control.” Four civilians were killed and 14 wounded in the fighting, according to Ramadi Hospital’s Dr Ahmed Abdul Salam, who had no casualty figures for security forces or the fighters. Elsewhere in Iraq, a suicide bomber drove a lorry filled with explosives into a police station in the northern city of Kirkuk. At least two people died in the attack and several others were injured. Bangladesh’s prime minister, who insists her election victory is legitimate, has said that her opponents had to abandon ‘terrorist activities’ before she would talk to them. In an address to media at her house in Dhaka on Monday, Sheikh Hasina denied there was a crisis in the country and that people had voted in line with democracy and the constitution. Hasina’s ruling Awami League party had on Sunday won one of the most violent elections in the country’s history, marred by street fighting, low turnout and a boycott by the opposition that made the results a foregone conclusion. The political gridlock plunges Bangladesh deeper into turmoil and economic stagnation, and could lead to more violence in a deeply impoverished country of 160 million. Hasina said the boycott by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party should “not mean there will be a question of legitimacy.” “People participated in the poll and other parties participated,” Hasina told reporters in her first comments since the elections. The BNP refused to take part in the polls after Hasina rejected its demands to stand aside and allow the elections to be organised by a neutral caretaker government. The prime minister said she had offered BNP leader Khaleda Zia the chance to join an interim cross-party government ahead of the vote. “Look, I tried my best, I told you, I offered ministry, I offered to share power with our opposition. I have done as much as
I can do but they didn’t respond,” she told foreign journalists in Dhaka. “Now if they realise that they made a mistake in not participating in the election, perhaps then they may come forward to discuss with us or make an offer. “If they come forward to discuss with us, they have to leave all these terrorist activities behind because what they are doing it is absolutely killing people, killing police, killing innocent people.” Sunday’s vote was the most violent in Bangladesh’s post-independence history, with at least 24 people being killed while hundreds of polling stations were attacked by opposition supporters. BNP vice president Shamsher Chowdhury said the low turnout showed the overwhelming desire for elections to be overseen by a neutral administration. “This government must declare this election null and void and we need a new election organised by a non-party government,” he told the AFP news agency. “The government should not waste any more time.” Any agreement on a new vote carries huge risks for Hasina, with an eve-of-election poll showing she would have lost in a straight contest with the BNP. UN leader Ban Ki-moon criticised both the main parties and called for them “to resume meaningful dialogue and to urgently address the expectations of the people of Bangladesh for an inclusive political process”. Skeptical Treason Trial May Get Messier
The special court is hearing the “high treason case” against the ailing former military ruler Mr. Musharraf who has been undergoing treatment in Rawalpindi’s military hospital for a number of medical issues including heart. According to the doctors, his coronary angiography is needed to optimize the management. They plan to ascertain the possibility of further interventions, like coronary artery bypass surgery. Treatment abroad is a possibility. The medical report has reached the special court and the decision will be made soon. On the other hand, one of Musharraf’s counsels, Anwar Mansoor, argues that the court has been constituted for a special purpose with limited jurisdictions, due to which it is not entitled to start criminal proceedings and can’t order arrest because that falls under criminal code. Maybe, a personal vendetta or any political motivation or a ploy to divert attention from the national issues is at play. Let’s wait and see. The fact is the PPP regime played smart for not going ahead with such a trial, but the N league dared and made the biggest blunder. Dr. Atta ur Rehman logically destroyed the drama of Musharraf trial in three minutes. While Tahir ul Qadri maintains that justice can’t be selective meaning the singling out of Musharraf, because law is blind. He questioned if government in 1999 was sent home and the constitution was subverted in entirety, yet there is no treason
trial. Why is 2007 emergency imposed by President Musharraf is being tried for high treason? Chaudhry Shujaat recalled that oaths were also taken from the socalled ‘traitor’ in the recent past. He said if the treason trial is to be carried out then it should be initiated from October 12.1999. Even if the trial is to be started from November 3, 2007, it would affect hundreds of individuals including former army chief Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and PML-Q leader Pervez Elahi. The word ‘Treason’ should not be part of the Constitution. It should be replaced with ‘violator of Constitution’, he maintained. As all know, Musharraf has been hooked up in numerous judicial cases including the serious murder charges, but he has been granted bails. The argument that we are forgiving the more serious sin of the military takeover of 12 Oct. 1999 and focusing on the actions of November 3, 2007 is very convincing indeed, where he has been booked under Article 6 (1) which reads: “Anyone who abrogates or attempts or conspires to abrogate, subverts or attempts or conspires to subvert, the constitution by use of force or show of force or by any other unconstitutional means shall be guilty of high treason.” Nevertheless, the petitioner failed to invoke clause 2 of Article 6; it clearly shows the bad intent of singling out one individual for personal vendetta. Article 6(2) makes it clear that “any person aiding or abetting the
acts mentioned in clause (1) shall likewise be guilty of high treason.” Unfortunately, only Musharraf was singled out by the 14-member bench of the Apex Court in its judgement of July 31, 2009 which ruled that the declaration of emergency was “unconstitutional, unauthorised and without any legal basis.” The law is Article 232 permits the President to impose Emergency Rule under certain situations. Article 232(1) allows the President to tackle a grave emergency if security of Pakistan is threatened, or any part thereof, by war or external aggression, or by internal disturbance beyond the power of a provincial government to control, he may issue a Proclamation of Emergency. Thus, imposing emergency rule is not similar to “treason.” In 2007, suspending or holding the constitution in abeyance was not an act of high treason. In 2010, however, suspending and holding the constitution in abeyance became an act of high treason. It is legally and rationally ridiculous to retroject this backwards to try Pervez Musharraf for having allegedly committed ‘high treason.’ Therefore, Article 6 is not applicable upon a single individual. It talks about a joint venture/ a team work. All involved in the conspiracy directly or indirectly are to be tried. Furthermore, the 18th Amendment has made the 17th Amendment null and avoid.
This means that the 1999 Military (counter) coup is still open to investigation and no longer enjoys protection. All validation stickers are null and void. Therefore, if we are to abide by the requirements of Articles 25 & 6 of the Pakistani Constitution and apply the High Treason Act, we are to charge each and every individual involved directly and indirectly in the 1999 Army coup. This includes, all previous Army coups, including the coup carried out by the late President General Zia ul Haq. Since, legitimizing the Military’s takeover using the “doctrine of necessity” argument was quite common we need the following Solution: Since, the criminal and civil wrongs are allowed to be done in village and the tribal culture, the votes for whole village/tribe are decided by other than the actual voter. In order to have a genuine democracy, the prevalent electoral system needs to be replaced sooner the better to stop the criminal elite from taking undue advantage from it and reaching the parliament or other public office. Only the educated and sensible people of integrity must be given the right of electing the right candidates who have utmost integrity, ability and WILL to deliver. And, the current regime is obligated to comfort the suffering public through dealing with the real issues of economic uplift; avoiding the non issues will be a much bet-

Family Reunification Still Not A Priority For Conservatives The Conservative government claimed an official end to the twoyear freeze it imposed on Canada’s parent and grandparent immigration stream, a measure it deemed necessary to deal with an application backlog, caused by the Conservative’s own mismanagement. But the supposed victory is facing tough criticism from the Official Opposition. “It’s hardly a success story,” said Jinny Sims (Newton-North Delta),
the NDP’s critic for Employment and Social Development, and its former Immigration critic. “Only the first 5,000 completed application forms will be processed, on top of already heightened sponsorship criteria. Families throughout my riding and all over the country remain devastated, missing loved ones.” Sims referred to the Conservative government’s recent sponsorship changes, which now require

As for the U.S. market, “once people get here, if (American tourists’) dollar goes a little bit further, they tend to spend a little bit more, that’s helpful, certainly,” Vallee added. Generally, any B.C. business that looks to foreign markets-whether local manufacturers, in the film business, or professional serviceswill get a benefit from a cheaper Canadian dollar, according to economist Jock Finlayson. “It improves the cost-competitiveness of tradable industries,” said Finlayson, executive vice-president of the Business Council of B.C. “Particularly exporters, but also tourism, software development or engineering services.” And if a weaker Canadian dollar gives British Columbians less spending power south of the border, it will “probably dampen the explosive growth in cross-border retail shop-

The report estimated that Canadian same-day cross-border travel to the U.S. rose 143 per cent between 2009 and 2012. David McCaig, president of the Association of Canadian Travel Agencies, said the lower dollar will have little immediate impact on Canadians’ travel abroad, particularly sunny destinations, as prices for such trips will likely stay at current prices over the next four months. There will also be a downside to a lower Canadian dollar in terms of higher prices for imported goods from the U.S. or that are priced internationally in U.S. dollars, “The big negative of cheaper currency is the buying power of Canadian households decline in the global marketplace,” Finlayson said. “The standard of living does go down a bit from that standpoint.” Source: Vancouver Sun

F A I T H Ibn Abbas: The Prophet (sw) delivered a sermon and said, “…Lo! Some men from my followers will be brought and taken towards the left side, whereupon I will say, ‘O Lord, (these are) my companions!’ It will be said, ‘You do not know what new things they introduced (into the religion) after you.’ I will then say as the righteous pious slave, Jesus, said, ‘I was a witness over them while I dwelt among them when Thou didst take me up Thou wast the Watcher over them, and You are the Witness to all things.’ (5: 117) Then it will be said, ‘(O Muhammad) these people never stopped to apostate since you left them.” (Bukhari, Kitabul Tafsir, Hadith 4259)
The Forgiveness of Muhammad (saw) Shown to Non-Muslims The Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, was described as a “Mercy for all the Worlds”, as God said in the Quran: “We have sent you as a mercy for all the worlds.” (Quran 21:107) The recipients of this quality were not limited to just the Muslim nation, but it also extended to non-Muslims, some of who spent all their effort trying to harm the Prophet and his mission. This mercy and forgiveness is clearly demonstrated in the fact that the Prophet, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, never took revenge on anyone for personal reasons and always forgave even his staunch enemies. Aisha said that the Prophet never took revenge on his own behalf on anyone. She also said that he never returned evil for evil, but he would forgive and pardon. This will, God willing, become clear after a deep analysis of the following accounts of his life. In the earlier portion of his mission, the Prophet traveled to the city of Taif, a city located in the mountains nearby to Mecca, in order to invite them to accept Islam. The leaders of Taif, however, were rude and discourteous in their treatment of the Prophet. Not being content with their insolent attitude towards him, they even stirred up some gangs of the town to harass him. This riffraff followed the Prophet shouting at and abusing him, and throwing stones at him, until he was compelled to take refuge in an orchard. Thus the Prophet had to endure even more obstacles in Taif than he had had to face in Mecca. These ruffians, stationed either side of the path, threw stones at him until his feet were injured and smeared with blood. These oppressions so grievously dejected the Prophet and plunged him into in such a state of depression that a prayer, citing his helplessness and pitiable condition and seeking the aid of God, spontaneously came from his lips: “O God, to You I complain of my weakness, lack of resources and humiliation before these people. You are the Most Merciful, the Lord of the weak and my Master. To whom will You consign me? To one estranged, bearing ill will, or an enemy given power over me? If You do not assign me any worth, I care not, for Your favor is abundant upon me. I seek refuge in the light of Your countenance by which all darkness is dispelled and every affair of this world and the next is set right, lest Thy anger should descend upon me or Your displeasure light upon me. I need only Your pleasure and satisfaction for only You enable me to do good and evade the evil. There is no power and no might but You.” The Lord then sent the angel of mountains, seeking the permission of the Prophet to join together the two hills and crush the city of Taif, between which it was located. Out of his great tolerance and mercy, the Messenger of God replied, “No! For, I hope that God will bring forth from their loins people who will worship God alone, associating nothing with Him.” (Saheeh Muslim) His mercy and compassion was so great that

LECTURE SERIES ON ISLAMIC FINANCING ORGANIZED BY BCMA
An Islamic Financing- Lecture Series was organised from Dec 23 -Dec 27, 2013 by British Columbia Muslim Association(BCMA) in Masjid Al -Salam Burnaby, Masjid Al-Iman Victoria, Surrey Jamea Masjid and Richmond Jamea Masjid. Mr. Shawkat Hasan, Vice President of Social Services BCMA, was the coordinator of these lecture series in BCMA Masajid. The executive board invited professor Dr. Abdullah El-Saif from University of Al Saud Saudi Arabia for this informative series who specialized in Islamic financing. His Arabic lectures translated in English by the Masajid’s Imam/Mufti and boards members in which he educated the Muslim community on various aspects of financial transactions commonly available
in North America and Europe, from mortgages, credit cards, car loans, to interest from banks and other financial institutions. The modern features of financial transactions in accordance with Islamic Sharia were discussed at each venue with different aspects in details. Through power point slideshow, Dr. Al Saif described the financial options available to the public in western countries and its implications and application in the light of Islamic Sharia. He said the option of Pre-Paid Credit Cards is also available in this system. There were Q & A sessions held at all Masajids for more than one hour and people got more information about Islamic banking system.
RIBA (USURY) By:Muhammad Hanif In Arabic term Riba is a synonym for the term interest used in conventional banking operations. Riba means charging predetermined additional amount on a loan extended based on length of credit period. Certain quarters are of the view that Riba which is prohibited by revelations is the Usury (interest charged on consumption loans) and banking interest (interest charged on productive loans) is not covered by the term. Following are some further citations (definitions) extracted from literature to clarify the meanings of word Riba used in Holy Qura’n. 1. In the words of Imam Abubakr Al-Jassas (D.380 AH) “The riba of Jahiliyya [period of ignorance] is a loan given for stipulated period with a stipulated increase on the principal payable by the loanee [debtor].” 2. Islamic Fiqh Academy (IFA) Jeddah of OIC representing the collective wisdom of Sharia experts is of the view that any increase stipulated in a contract of loan irrespective whether consumption loan or productive loan is Riba prohibited by Allah (SWT). Iqbal, & Molyneux, documented “The equivalence of riba to interest has always been unanimously recognized in Muslim history by all schools of thought. In conformity with this consensus the Islamic Fiqh Academy of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) has recently issued a verdict in its Resolution No. 10(10/2) upholding the historical consensus on the prohibition of interest” (p. 9; IFC/2000) . Charging of predetermined additional amount (usury, interest) on loans had never got support in ethics/religions. Interest charging is forbidden by at least all known revealed religions including Judaism, Christianity and Islam. According to Usmani, 1999, “The word riba used in the Holy Qur’an carries the same meaning [as word Usury] because the verse of Surah An-Nisaa explicitly mentions that riba was prohibited for the Jews also”. In the Holy Qura’n four sets of verses are about Riba (interest) revealed on different occasions. Translation of the verses is presented here in the order of revelation. Surah An-Nisaa 4:161 where inter-
est charging was disclosed as sinful act of Jews. “And because of their charging riba while they were prohibited from it.” The last set of verses revealed is reported in Surah Al-Baqarah 2:275281 whereby severe punishment is declared for those dealing in interest and also persuaded for charity, deferment of loans from miser persons and even write-off as alms. And also in Surah Al-Rum 30:39, Surah Al-i-’Imran 3:130 In addition, the Prophet Muhammad is said to have cursed the consumer of interest, the one who pays it to others, the witnesses to such a contract, and the one who records it in writing. Instructions are clear. No ambiguity is left. If a person believes in revelations then she/he should avoid charging interest and seek the pleasure of Allah (SWT). It is the responsibility of all true believers in God (Jews, Christians and Muslims) to give up interest based transactions from their personal lives immediately and input their energies collectively to design promote and implement a financial system free of interest. Following conclusions are drawn from above citations; First Interest is prohibited by all revealed religions and charging of interest is Haram (unlawful) for at least Jews, Christians and Muslims. Second; as for prohibition of interest is concerned, there is no difference in commercial loans and consumption loans at all and bank interest is haram (unlawful). While it is clear from the above citations that dealings in interest based transactions are Haram (unlawful) including conventional banking; important role of commercial banks cannot be rejected in the modern economy; so change in the philosophy and design of commercial banking was required to meet the religious obligation. Referring to the above citation it is further concluded that what is prohibited through revelations is the pre determined charge on capital (risk free return) and not the profit on capital (involving risk) invested (2:275). Muslim Jurists are of the view that reward for capital should be linked with the outcome of the underlying project if financing fa-
cility is being extended and/or reward should be obtained through trade involving sale and purchase. Muhammad Hanif is Assistant Professor of Accounting & Finance at National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences, Islamabad. He is the author of Islamic Banking: Financial Reporting Perspective,
TYPES OF RIBA
Many Muslims, especially those living in non-Muslim countries, give up on the idea of ever owning their own home. Many families choose to rent for the long-term rather than participate in a bank loan which involves the taking or paying of interest. In recent years, however, the market has opened up to Islamic, or no riba’, mortgage offerings which are compliant with Islamic law. Modern banks usually offer Islamic financing of two main types: murabahah (cost plus) or ijarah(leasing).
There are two types of Ribâ: Ribâ An-Nasia - Interest on lent money. Ultimately, the concept of Riba depends on the specific financial institution following Shariah. Some believe that any interest is Riba, while others only believe it is unlawful if it is sneaky or done in a evil way to hurt someone. Most Islamic finance lessors believe that Riba can be charged up to the current value of inflation in the country the loan is completed in. This is believed because the person asking for a loan should return the time value of the money they receive. This doesn’t allow the lessor to earn an excessive amount of money, but is an act of good faith. Riba An-Nasia is ultimately interest paid on money that was loaned to someone. Ribâ Al-Fadl - Taking a superior thing of the same kind of goods by giving more of the same kind of goods of inferior quality, eg.,dates of superior quality for dates of inferior quality in great amounts. Ultimately, during an exchange of goods or agreement, it is unlawful for an uneven number of items or items at a different quality to be exchanged. This means if the borrower or buyer wants to give the seller something a little extra, even if it’s at a different quality, it’s forbidden. Most of these type of transactions are considered barter; thus many believe that this practice is acceptable.
Musharaka - Declining Bal- Murabaha Murabaha is ance Co-ownership The term Musharakah, means sharing. In the context of Islamic Finance, Musharaka is a declining balance co-partnership, and is also a Shariah-compliant method of Islamic Home Finance. There are two types of Musharakah, Permanent Musharaka and Diminishing Musharaka. You enter a partnership arrangement with a co-owner and sign a contract that specifies the terms of your agreement. After you find the home you want, you get approval to move ahead, and make an offer. Your partner or co-owner, usually a professional investment company rather than an individual, provides the lion’s share of the purchase price. As part of the partnership agreement, you agree to make monthly payments to the partnership for your use of the home as either explicit or implicit rent. At the same time, you make regularly scheduled investments in the partnership to increase your equity, or ownership share, of the home. With each payment, the balance you owe the partnership declines and your equity increases. Setting The Payment The amount of your monthly payment is determined at the time of purchase, based on several factors including the price of the home, your credit rating, the amount of your initial payment, the term of the contract, and the current and projected fair market value of similar homes in the community where you buy. Shariah scholars are working with Islamic financial institutions to make the monthly payment schedules more like conventional mortgage amortization, indicating how each payment is divided. The goal is to make the contracts easier to understand and ultimately more available at competitive prices.
essentially an installment sale. The financier will purchase the item, mark it up and then divide the marked up price over time. The purchaser will then make the agreed upon installment payments. This is a fairly straightforward approach, however it does have several drawbacks, particularly as it is applied in the US and Canada. 1. All sale transactions are subject to a tax, and real estate transactions are subject to a transfer tax. In the case of Murabaha, the seller will pay a transfer tax when the property is transferred to the financier, and the financier will pay a transfer tax (at the higher Murabaha contract amount) when transferred to the purchaser. So essentially the Murabaha transaction has a higher closing cost due to the second transfer tax. Many times the financier will bury that cost into the Murabaha contract so it is not readily discernible to the customer. 2. No matter when you wish to pay off the transaction you have to pay the full contract price. So unlike Musharaka or Ijara, there is no incentive to pay the transaction off early. For these reasons, we only recommend Murabaha for something that is short term, such as inventory finance or auto finance, for long term real estate transaction, Murabaha may look to be inexpensive at the beginning, but in the long term it is more expensive. It is important to remember that our community follows many of the same statistical patterns as the general US or Canadian population, in the sense that every 7-10 years, there is some reason to sell, refinance or change your primary residence. Most people do not stay in the same home for 30 years, so why have to pay the profit for 30 years if you are only in a home for 12? www.ijaraloans.com

12 MPs to Watch in 2014 Highlight Younger Generation of Politicians
No one can predict the political future but here’s a list of a dozen federal MPs worth watching in 2014. A large number are in their 40s or younger, suggesting a generational change may be afoot in federal politics: Michael Chong The former Conservative intergovernmental affairs minister, who quit cabinet in 2007 over Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s move to recognize Quebec as a nation within Canada, is pushing parliamentary reform that would give backbench MPs more independence, and future prime ministers less caucus control. If the bilingual 42-year-old Ontarian isn’t harbouring future leadership ambitions, he should be. Jason Kenney The minister of employment and social development has long had a power base within the Conservative movement in his own right. He made some waves late in 2013 when he abandoned the party line bysupporting former Harper chief of staff Nigel Wright and by calling for Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s resignation. Kenney, 44, must find a way to make a key Conservative promise, the already-advertised Canada Job Grant, a reality. He’ll also be under intense scrutiny by Conservatives interested in succession planning. Larry Miller / James Rajotte Miller from rural southwestern Ontario and Rajotte from Edmonton are well-respected anchors in the Conservative caucus. They both support Chong’s private member’s reform bill. Neither is a partisan firebrand or caucus trouble-maker. If parliamentary reform is to become reality, it will require the steady resolve of backbenchers such as these. James Moore The bilingual British Columbian makes every short list of potential successors to Stephen
Harper. His move to industry minister from heritage last summer appeared designed to give the 37-year-old more economic gravitas. If the Conservatives’ much-hyped consumeroriented focus on cellphone plans and cable TV is to have an impact, Moore will have to
charges stemming from allegations of election spending irregularities dating back to the 2008 campaign. There will also be unrelated court dates dealing with Elections Canada’scontinuing investigation of fraudulent robocalls in the 2011 election. Both court
manage the high-visibility changes. Jim Flaherty The only finance minister this government has known limped out of a health-problemplagued 2013 sounding sick, tired and intransigent on the issue of pension reform. It is feasible the Conservatives could announce a balanced federal budget as early as this spring (freeing Flaherty to retire on a high note), but it may make more sense politically to hold off until the budget of 2015, an election year. Flaherty’s health, relations with other key ministers, and the politics of budget balancing will make his office one to watch. Dean Del Mastro Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s former parliamentary secretary goes to trial this June on
cases could reopen old wounds for the governing party. Justin Trudeau Trudeau’s to-be-expected honeymoon after being elected Liberal leader in a landslide last April has proved remarkably durable and gaffe-resistant. His third-place party in terms of parliamentary seats enters 2014 reliably leading in public-opinion polls. Trudeau, 42, says he will remain unscripted and accessible but won’t be releasing a policy platform until 2015, which could make for another interesting year of open-mic high jinks. Given Trudeau’s position and pedigree, Canadians and Conservatives most of all — can’t seem to take their eyes off him. New Toronto Centre MP Chrystia Freeland,
left, is being asked to add policy substance to Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau’s focus on the middle class.(Sean Kilpatrick/Canadian Press) Chrystia Freeland The star Liberal candidate won a seat in downtown Torontoin a much-watched November byelection. The former business journalist, 44, has written a book, “Plutocrats: The Rise of the New Global Super-Rich and the Fall of Everyone Else,” that focuses on income inequality. She’s been appointed co-chair, with MP Scott Brison, of a Liberal economic advisory group. It will be up to policy advocates like Freeland to provide evidence the Liberal middle-class mantra is more than just rhetorical positioning. Tom Mulcair The NDP leader has won widespread plaudits for his work grilling the government in the House of Commons over the Senate expenses scandal, and tells Parliament-watchers to expect more questions in the same vein when the House resumes in 2014. But with the NDP consistently languishing in third place in the polls, Mulcair needs to find an issue that casts him as something other than the inquisitorial leader of the official Opposition. Energy policy, where the Liberals are closer to the Conservatives, provides Mulcair an obvious path to differentiate his party from the pack. Will she or won’t she? NDP MP Olivia Chow has said she is considering a run for mayor of Toronto this year. (Fred Chartrand/Canadian Press) Nathan Cullen / Olivia Chow Cullen hasannounced he’ll keep his northern B.C. seat rather than run for the leadership of the provincial New Democrats, but Chow is thought likely to take a run at the mayoralty this year in Toronto. Bruce Hyer in northern Ontario quit the NDP caucus over his position on the gun registry and B.C.’s Alex Atamanenko announced recently he won’t seek re-election in 2015. The NDP can’t afford to lose many more seasoned MPs outside Quebec, where 57 of the party’s current 100 MPs were elected in 2011.

THE WAY IMMIGRATION TO CANADA IS CHANGING
By: Syed Asad Hussain Immigration to Canada is playing a major role in expanding the population, consumers’ base and wealth. Canada roughly accepts 250,000 immigrants a year. According to the 2011 National Household Survey (NHS)-which selected roughly 4.5 million households across Canada, representing one-thirds of the all households-Canadian immigration fabric is now composed of more than 200 ethnic origins of which 13 different ethnic groups surpassed one million mark in 2011. The limited discussion in this paper is an attempt to capture recent trends in immigrations to Canada. Many sources have been consulted in this regard. Canada had only 6 ethnic enclaves in 1976.
Now Metro Vancouver alone has more than 110. In Richmond area, more than 70% popu-
lation is of Chinese origin, whereas 70% of north Surrey is composed of South Asians. Indeed immigrants help the host country in many ways: they become entrepreneurs thus provide employments to the local economy; inculcate diversified cultures and traditions, norms, values, knowledge, wisdom, technology, intellects, skills, and talents in local markets making the economy more colorful, competitive and innovative; and last but not the least, they create demand for goods and services. According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, Canada’s annual immigration flow is now proportionately one of the highest among OECD members, at 0.7 per cent of its population. In the past, Canada attracted more Europeans immigrants. More recently, however, according to the 2011 NHS, Asia (including the Middle East) has been the largest source of immigrants during 2006/11. In total, 1.2 million immigrants came to Canada during 20062011. The Philippines topped the list sharing 13.1%, followed by China (10.5%), and In-
dia (10.4%). The other countries that made to the top ten countries’ list are; the United
States, Pakistan, the United Kingdom, Iran, South Korea, Colombia, and Mexico. Between 2006/2011, most Muslims immigrants came to Canada were from Pakistan. Hindus or Sikhs came mainly from India, while most Buddhists and having no religious affiliation came from China. According to the 2011, NHS, two-thirds of Canada’s 1 million Muslim populations lived in the three largest census metropolitan areas Toronto, Montréal and Vancouver. Toronto had the largest population of Muslims, at just over 424,900. Montréal had just over 221,000 and Vancouver about 73,200. Among the
455,000 Sikhs in Canada, 44.2% lived in British Columbia and 39.5% in Ontario. Sikhs represented 4.7% of British Columbia’s population and 1.4% of Ontario’s population. Slightly, over three-quarters (77.5%) of British Columbia’s Sikh population, lived in the CMA of Vancouver. Of Ontario’s Hindu population, the vast majority (88.7% lived in the CMA of Toronto. Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec were the main destinations for the immigrants in 2011 (94.8% foreign born). Seven out of 10 lived in the three largest census metropolitan areas: Toronto, Montréal and Vancouver, of which Ontario and the BC shared 53.3% and 17.6 %, respectively followed by Quebec 14.4% and Alberta 9.5%. According to the findings of the 2011 NHS,
the three largest groups- South Asians, Chinese and Blacks made up around 61.3% of the total visible minority population. One out of every 5 Canada’s population linked to visible minority. South Asians make up the largest visible minority group in Canada. They accounted for over 25% or 4.8 % of Canada’s total population. Chinese, the second largest visible minority group made up 21.1% or 4% of Canada’s total population. The third largest group was of blacks-they made up 15.1% and 2.9% of Canada’s total population. The survey of 2011 NHS, lists Christianity as the leading religion (over 22.1 million people, two-thirds of Canada’s population), followed by Islam (3.2% of the nation’s total population), Hinduism represented 1.5%, Sikhs 1.4%, Buddhism 1.1% and Judaism 1.0%. Nearly one-quarter of the population (23.9%), had no religious affiliation. It can take years to get in. History suggests that immigrants often have difficulty working in their fields after they arrive. It takes them many years to get a decent job which would match their skills and previous experience. Whilst streams of emigrants continued to pour in Canada they continued to face tough challenges. According to Jeffrey Reitz of University of Toronto’s Centre for Industrial Relations, immigrants whose skills are underused cost the Canadian economy $2.4 billion yearly. He also estimated that they are underpaid to the tune of $12.6 billion every year. Yet Canada is facing a looming labor shortage. Hence it is critical for Canadian employers to put the talents and skills of immigrants for a better use or else the labor market will remain tight. Canada’s challenge for the future will be to attract the right people Canada needs, give them good opportunities and integrate them successfully in local communities. Justice and Democracy
From Socrates of Democratic Athens to Musharraf of Democratic Pakistan By Sqn. Ldr. (R) Nusrat Hussain Almost two thousand four hundred and fourteen years later from when Socrates was sentenced to death in 399 B.C. by a democratic government of Athens, we are witnessing another death trial of General Musharraf taking place at the Democratic stage of Pakistan. It is not an effort to draw a parallel between Musharraf and Socrates, but research paper revealing similar behavior of two democracies that fall so distant in time. Democracy, popularly known as a government of the people, by the people and for the people was not approved as the best form of government by Plato and Aristotle. They considered that running a country was a serious affair that could not be left at the choice of every Tom, Dick and Harry. In order to have good governance, the state essentially required to provide justice by making just laws for all its citizens. Socrates, according to Plato, described that the most important thing was not life, but good and just life. It is the duty of the state to make just arrangements where people could enjoy good life. He questions whether to follow the opinion of many or the one who has knowledge of it. Since people are born with certain excess of knowledge in different aspects of life, it is therefore imperative to follow those as rulers who have the capacity of deciding right and wrong for general good of all the people. People having capabilities of performing better in business and battlefield should be involved in those specific affairs and leave the ruling of the country to the people best in wisdom. A fine or good guardian of the city would be a lover of wisdom, high spirited and strong by nature. In his opinion the rule of the philosopher kings was the ideal form of government. Aristotle suggests the rule of the constitution in order to establish the best form of government. Every community struggles to have some good and best constitution capable of aiming at the common advantage, rather than the advantage of a few. Aristocrats correctly realize that the best life is one of just actions. Oligarchs (Rule by the rich) mistakenly believe that happiness consists in material wealth, and that equal political rights should be granted to those of equal wealth. Aristotle considers
democracy to be a corrupt form of rule, though the least harmful of the rest. The true distinction between oligarchy and democracy is between the rule of the wealthy and the rule of the poor. If Plato and Aristotle were to agree with some form of a practical and not an ideal form of government then it had to be a combination of the rule of wise, democrats and oligarchs because they believed that justice is the most important factor in the establishment of an ideal and practical government. Socrates thought: ‘Injustice is responsible for all the turmoil in the world that occurs due to the presence of ignorance, cowardice and every kind of wickedness.’ Justice is moderation and needs to be applied in every human activity. Aristotle says: ‘Justice, valor, wealth and freedom are essential elements for a state to exist. Anything done for the common good of the citizens and to the advantage of state is just.’ Socrates was sentenced to death on the charges of: Speaking against Gods of the Greek- ‘Treason,’ and for ‘Corrupting the minds of the youth of Athens.’ Musharraf is also faced with the charge of ‘High Treason’ in violating the Constitution of Pakistan. Socrates was 70 years old when he was put to death in 399 B.C. Musharraf happens to be of similar age at this point in time. The verdict was passed by a vast majority of 500 jurists (280 jurors had voted to find Socrates guilty, 220 jurors for acquittal) who continuously listened to the trial for about ten hours. The trial and execution of Socrates puzzles the historians till today; they still wonder why justice
was not delivered in a society that enjoyed more freedom and democracy. Some historians conclude that Socrates was punished because he followed principles instead the will of the people. At one time as member of the council, he chanced to be President of the Popular Assembly, that body was seized with a desire to put the nine generals, and the rest, to death by a single inclusive vote. Whereupon, in spite of the bitter resentment of the people, and the menaces of several influential citizens, Socrates refused, to put the question, esteeming it of greater importance faithfully to abide by the oath which he had taken, than to gratify the people wrongfully. To the other charge of corrupting the youth, Socrates stated that the reason he is viewed as a corruptor of the youth is because the upper class youth often imitate Socrates and ask questions not liked by their elders. The youth, as to not seem at a loss for words, use the common and readymade charges against philosophers, many of which hold different views than Socrates. These untrue accusations cast Socrates in a bad light, and are responsible for the misconceptions that most people hold of him. Musharraf similarly gave freedom to the media during his regime. A large section of the media, created by Musharraf has gained the strength of a monster in Pakistan. For the love of democracy, it is spilling its venom against the General spreading misconceptions. Musharraf, as an army officer, had taken an oath under article 244 of the Constitution of Pakistan stating to bear true faith and
allegiance to Pakistan and uphold the Constitution of Pakistan. His actions including fight against terrorism were taken in the best interest of Pakistan. The constitution here also gives paramount importance to the state of Pakistan prior to the upholding of the constitution. Most historians agree that Socrates’ death was more of a victimization due to some kind of personal vendetta rather than the fulfillment of the requirements of Justice. It is interesting to note that Musharraf is facing trial not because of bringing the original coup d’etat of 1999 but because of introducing emergency in 2007. Both of the crimes carry the harsh punishment of ‘Death’ or ‘Life imprisonment.’ However, toppling the government and introducing Martial law is much bigger a crime than introducing a simple state of Emergency in the land. Present democratic government has not charged him for the coup d’etat of 1999 because it would bring many other generals, judges and politicians to the fold of the charge of Treason for abetting Musharraf and later justifying the coup through legality. Many including the generals, politicians and the judges are a part or supporters of the present democratic set up in Pakistan. But, the act of introducing emergency somehow singles out Musharraf while the other abettors walk out freely. Given the history of direct conflict between the present Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of Pakistan and General Pervez Musharraf it comes out to be a clear case of personal vendetta amongst the two top leaders. History is aware of the death of Socrates at the hands of the Democracy of Athens in 399 B.C. It is yet to be seen if the Democracy of 2014 in Pakistan will quench its thirst with the sacred blood of General Pervez Musharraf. Your Self Image! By: Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor Self-image is how you perceive yourself. It consists of a number of selfimpressions that have built up over time. What are your hopes and dreams? What do you think and feel? What have you done throughout your life and what did you want to do? These self-images can be very positive, giving a person confidence in their thoughts and actions or negative, making a person doubtful of their capabilities and ideas. Surprisingly, your self-image can be very different from how the world sees you. Some people who outwardly seem to have it all (intelligence, looks, personal and financial success) may have a bad selfimage. Conversely, others who have had a very difficult life and multiple hardships may also have a very positive self-image. Some believe that a person’s self-image is defined by events that affect him or her (doing well or not in school, at work or re-
lationships). Others believe that a person’s self-image can help shape those events. There is probably some truth to both thoughts, failing at something can certainly cause one to feel bad about oneself - just as feeling good about oneself can lead to better performance. It cannot be denied that your self-image has a very strong impact on your happiness and your outlook on life can affect those around you. If you project a positive self-image, people will be more likely to see you as a positive, capable person. However, it’s important that your selfimage be both positive and realistic. Having a self-image that is unrealistic can be a drawback, whether that self-image is negative OR positive. Sometimes having an occasional negative thought or criticism about oneself can encourage change, hard work, growth and success. Sometimes having too positive image of oneself can encourage complacency, underachievement, and arrogance. Finding the balance between feeling positive about oneself and having realistic goals is important to achieve success in life. shabnam@skcounselling.ca

PAKISTAN
Injustice to the Ailing Veteran
By Tariq M Javed, Toronto What is the actual driving force for disgracing a 70 plus years old ex president of Pakistan who suffers from nine medical conditions? Among other factors, per sonal vendettas as well as pleasure of the friendly foes (external or internal) are the most probable motives. The disease of opportunism runs in the human blood and unless it’s filtered out spiritually and ethically, the manipulators out there do try all kinds of political manoeuvres/ stunts to achieve the goals as targeted. Gen Musharraf having remained house arrested due to serious murder charges against him for almost one half of a year was finally released on bail. But it’s not over yet for the poor guy, as the Pythonic Article 6 looks for gobbling him despite his illness. Apparently, the hypocrisy has almost taken over in Pakistan, where there isn’t “one standard” set for all indiscriminately. The message is “might is right.” No one is actually worried when watching the clowns manipulating for their greed. The manipulators never get tired of advocating in favour of democracy; however they
never go for the real democracy. Though, democracy is for the people, of the people, and by the people, yet an important element remains missing for ages; no leader ever cared for rectifying or improving of it. Reason is simple; this poses a potential hazard in their own election. “Jamhooriat main bandon ko gina kertay han, tola nahi kertay.” Thus, democracy in this form is misleading and partially painful, because the fact is “quality is better than quantity.” We are facing two problems: (a) Democracy based on election by all regardless of literacy level of the voter. (b) Democracy based on rigged elections where ballot stuffing takes place or vote is cast by other than the actual voter. Fake votes are the worst scenario, where wrong candidates grab the assembly seats and some end up in the cabinet. Now, with such a sham democracy in place, things start getting worse to a point where the population gets fed up and prays for the military take over. Military takeover means “usurpation of the constitution.” which is carried out to save the failing state. This is called a coup which is meant to punish the culprits responsible for misgovernance. Wishful talking about democracy/ jamhooriat all the time is only for the good of rich elite that takes turns, whereas fate of ‘masses below poverty line’ has not much to gain from this fake exercise of democracy. The habitual powergrabbers want to maintain the ‘status quo’ for their own vested interests. The fact is, neither they are loyal with the country nor are they
well wishers of the poor masses. Furthermore, the same political mafia includes the land mafia, industrialists and the feudal lords who have been suppressing the oppressed from rising up for their basic legal rights on constant basis. The other sad part is played by descendents of Sufi/saints in Pakistan who enjoy collecting cash from the followers and nobody pays tax on it. The impotent Auqaaf department is useless in this game. Unfortunately, Pakistan does have the selfish politicians; this class of super humans leads a luxurious lifestyle which is comparable to that of the royal families around the world. Ironically, they are the ones who always stress upon the importance of democracy; they teach virtues of democracy. They are the ones who are nourished in the lap of dictatorship but also talk about the curse of military dictatorship. Everyone knows these children of dictatorship have now turned champions of the rule of law and democracy, seeking to cover up their own misdeeds. Shouting in favour of high treason trial and calling names such as “ghaddaar” would benefit no one other than the super active selfish mafia. What a mockery? Pathetic! Political opportunism is at play: the selfish elite know fully well as to when, where and how to maneuver to achieve “means” to gain the “desired ends.” Indeed, political manipulation is an important step of the game as long as it’s not costing reputation, yet, the national honour should never be compromised. Ironically, there are those who believe or show that their salvation lies with military rule, but they are
the ones who are the most fervent advocates of putting the embattled leader of the coup on high treason trial. There are a number of the so called friends who were very active during the Musharraf era till the end; sadly, they are now conveniently absorbed in the new political order enjoying their new portfolios as ministers. The same hypocrites have jumped onto the band wagon of condemnation of their former friend and leader. But, salutations to Ch. Shujaat and a few others, because they are telling the truth at this critical hour. Though, Musharraf today stands deserted by his old associates and followers, his old ill wishers are turning to become his well wishers now. This is because the people with good conscience can’t tolerate injustice to anyone. Let there be no selective justice, as law is blind; it flows on its own course. Musharraf is no angel, he committed blunders and the law says each citizen is held accountable for his unconstitutional actions as long as the trial is not based on personal vendetta. Conveniently, the federal government and the apex judiciary have attempted to restrict the current trial to the Nov 3, 2007 action. Beyond doubt, the smell of something fishy is quite bothersome at this point in time. Obviously, it is not in their interest to go back to the original coup/counter coup of Oct 12, 1999. As per the records, it was the judiciary that issued the validation sticker after having legitimised the coup. Additionally, the elected par-
liament later indemnified all the actions taken by the military-led government. Many political parties had welcomed the overthrow of the Nawaz regime. Most of the N Leaguers came under the banner of Q League and became the face of the new order and had their share of power all through the allowed tenure. Uniform didn’t matter and the parliamentarians were more than willing to have Gen Musharraf re-elected in uniform for a second term and approved his decision to impose emergency on Nov 3rd, 2007. The outcome of the current case is likely to face its own demise as ex army chief can’t be tried in a non military setting. The Pakistan Army act, as amended in 1978, covers the charges of “treason” as well as those pertaining to matters of military discipline committed by a uniformed officer of the Pakistan Army. This special court has “no jurisdiction” on members of the armed forces even when the charge is that of treason. They are to be tried under the Pakistan Army Act through a proceeding under a court martial. Conclusion: Political culture needs a drastic overhaul to accommodate the right only candidates to prevent the future army coup. This is advisable as undemocratic norm has to change for a much better Pakistan sooner the better followed by the healthy economy where everyone shares the prosperity equally but according to the individual’s input. There is a great lesson for everyone: God Almighty doesn’t like anyone with pride (takabbur). Let’s remember “pride hath a fall.” This happened with Nawaz Sharif and the same is happening with Musharraf.

Luongo, Hamhuis ‘proud, excited’ to play for Team Canada in Sochi Marty Hamhuis hasn’t slept the same since his son, Dan, returned to his home province 3½ years ago to play hockey for the Vancouver Canucks. Imagine how they feel about having Dan Hamhuis represent Smithers and northern B.C. on Team Canada at the Olympics. As a regional sales rep for Coca-Cola, Marty Hamhuis knows a lot of people in a lot of small northern towns. Dan joked that between his dad and his sister, Erin, who works in the credit union in Smithers, the Hamhuises pretty much know everybody. For instance, Hamhuis gets only a sliver of the coverage devoted to Canuck goalie Roberto Luongo, who was named to his third Olympic team. Luongo is never out of the headlines, Hamhuis rarely in them. The defenceman plays a game as quiet as he is, which is why the 31-year-old has been “under the carpet” for most of his National Hockey League career. With the Nashville Predators, for whom he spent his first six
NHL seasons, Hamhuis was blacked out by the giant shadows of Norris Trophy-calibre defencemates Shea Weber and Ryan Suter. In Vancouver, where Hamhuis moved in 2010 as a free agent, he has been merely one part of a core group of good defencemen. Even amid the laser-like glare on the Canucks in this city and province, a lot of people probably didn’t realize how good he was until No. 1 defenceman Alex Edler was injured five weeks ago and coach John Tortorella soon started playing Hamhuis 28-30 minutes a night. Hamhuis speaks softly when he speaks at all and rarely displays emotion. But he came close to crying Tuesday when asked about the support he receives from his community and people in northern B.C. Although he has played for Canada at five world championships, Hamhuis thought his best chance to make an Olympic team passed in 2010 when, at age 27, he wasn’t selected for the Vancouver Games. He turned
his phone off when he went to bed Monday night, and learned he had made Team Canada from a voicemail left by Ken Holland, one of Canadian manager Steve Yzerman’s assistants. That recording, played on speakerphone by Hamhuis for his wife, Sarah, and their three girls, is now precious. The media scrum Hamhuis faced at Rogers Arena, before Tuesday’s Canuck game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, was probably the largest of his career. Luongo, on the other hand, is accustomed to crowds and questions. Last spring, Luongo wasn’t even the starting goalie on the Canucks. Next month, he may start for Canada in Sochi. His path since 2010 has been tumultuous and rife with drama. But as a player, Luongo is back where he was. In a reflective moment Saturday – as he was about to return from a groin injury, about to sprain an ankle against the Los Angeles Kings – Luongo said: “All the stuff I’ve been through, you go through so much
Dav Whatmore, on his final assignment as Pakistan’s head coach, picked out complacency on the part of his side as one of the main reasons for the first Test against Sri Lanka ending in a tame draw. Pakistan had dominated the first three days of the Test in nearly all departments, but their bowlers were unable to close out Sri Lanka in the second innings. Angelo Mathews struck a career-best 157 not out to help his side draw the game. “It wasn’t the batting collapse [of the lower order in the first innings]. It was a case of thinking it would be easy,” Whatmore said. “The boys batted extremely well but everyone was thinking that it will be easy thereafter, despite talking about it and letting each other know that more hard work had to be done.” Pakistan started well
in their first innings courtesy centuries from captain Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan, but slipped from a strong 301 for 3 to finish 383 all out. “At that point, there were still nine sessions in the game and the reality is that we lost regular wickets. We could have got more runs but we left the door open.” Whatmore was appointed head coach in March 2012 and Pakistan are yet to win a Test series under him, and have been successful in only two out of 11 matches during his tenure. He was eager to correct those statistics, especially in his last chance to do so. “[The goal is] obviously to win, particularly against Sri lanka, the team I coached for six years,” he said with a genial smile. “It is my country of birth and I am keen on doing well against them. Some of them are
very good friends but when I enter the field we are enemies, so I am keen to finish the stint with a win. Pakistan’s search for a resolute pair at the top of the order has been a long and arduous affair, but Whatmore was pleased to note how Shehzad, on Test debut, showed his credentials to open the batting. With the second Test beginning on Wednesday, Pakistan chose to rest the bowlers who played in Abu Dhabi at training. Whatmore has placed the onus on them to pick up 20 wickets. Saeed Ajmal, an important factor in that regard, went wicketless in 49 second-innings overs, but Whatmore was quick to support his ace offspinner. “I don’t think it [Ajmal’s performance] was a worry, it was a combination of the difficulties he faced extracting something
you learn to deal with pretty much every situation. I just want to enjoy the game and play hard. Luongo got another chance to start in Vancouver because Cory Schneider was traded in June to the New Jersey Devils. Hamhuis is getting his Olympic chance because Canada needed a left-shot defenceman who can skate and pass and play intelligently – and because Yzerman doesn’t care about headlines. It took Luongo three months to prove he is still an elite player. It took Hamhuis most of his life. Source: Vancouver Sun
Whatmore rues Pakistan’s complacency
out of the wicket as well as opposition playing very well,” he said. With Dubai traditionally known to provide turn, Whatmore also hinted at Abdur Rehman getting a game, “but we have to look at the pitch. It rained today in Dubai and the weather changed so we have to look at the pitch.” Whatmore was wary about Sri Lanka’s skill at playing spin but reiterated that the nature of the pitch would have a major say in the team selection. “Well, you can say that but I am a firm believer that regardless of who you play against, it [the composition] depends on what pitch you play on. The nature of the pitch determines what combination you play.” Source: Cricinfo
