VANCOUVER’S HOUSING 2ND LEAST AFFORDABLE IN WORLD

Vancouver ranks second only to Hong Kong in having the least affordable housing, according to Demographia’s 10th annual survey of 360 housing markets in nine Western countries. The survey divided median housing prices in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, the U.K. and the U.S. against median gross household income to come up with its ratings. Under this rating system, homes in Vancouver cost 10 times median income

compared with 15 times income in Hong Kong. Three times median income is considered affordable. Headhunter Craig Hemer says the high cost of housing could affect some people’s decision to move to Vancouver for work. “If you’re living in a five-bedroom home in one part of the country and coming here and bringing your family and expecting to live within the city, costs go up exponentially. And it’s a bit of a

The government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has systematically killed and tortured about 11,000 people, according to a reported based on the evidence of a defector and produced by three former international prosecutors. The report, commissioned by the government of Qatar and released on Tuesday, examined thousands of pictures said to have been smuggled out by a former military police photographer. The report shows explicit evidence of starvation, strangulation and beatings, and features pictures of emaciated corpses with livid wounds. The pictures show ... the systematic murder of detainees by starvation, by torture ... the mutilation of bodies. Desmond de Silva, former chief prosecutor of the special court for Sierra Leone. The release came a day before talks were due to begin in Switzerland aimed at negotiating an end to Syria’s bloody civil war. The Syrian denies torturing detainees. The report was written by Desmond de Silva, the former chief prosecutor of the special court for Sierra Leone; Geoffrey Nice, the former lead prosecutor in the trial of former Yugoslavian President Slobodan Milosevic; and David Crane, who indicted the Liberian president, Charles Taylor. It features evidence from a forensic pathologist, an anthropologist who investigated mass graves in Kosovo and an expert in digital images. De Silva said the report was the “smoking gun” showing evidence of “industrial-scale” killing by the Syrian regime. The defector, identified only as “Caesar”, presented about 55,000 images of 11,000 dead prisoners since the start of the uprising in Syria in March 2011. The evidence was viewed by forensic experts commissioned by a London legal firm representing Qatar. The defector claims that the victims all died

Bomb targets bus of Shia pilgrims in south-west Pakistan At least 22 Shia pilgrims have been killed after a bomb struck a bus in Mastung district in Pakistan’s restive Balochistan province, officials said. The pilgrims were returning from a trip to sacred sites in neighbouring Iran when explosives were detonated, causing one of a convoy of buses to catch fire. More than two dozen people have been injured, some critically, a police officer told AP news agency. An extremist Sunni group, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, has previously admitted carrying out similar attacks against Pakistan’s Shia minority. Balochistan ethnic nationalists are also waging an insurgency in the region for more autonomy. President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif both released statements strongly condemning Tuesday evening’s bombing.

At least six Pakistan police officers killed protecting Spanish cyclist Six police officers were killed and six wounded in the exchange of fire, while escorting a Spanish roundthe-world cyclist through the highly volatile western province of Baluchistan. Officials say the cyclist, identified as Javier Colorado, and his escort of local tribal police were ambushed by gunmen in Mastung district, about 55 kilometres west of the provincial capital Quetta. Mr Colorado suffered only minor injuries. His family posted a message on his Facebook page several hours after the attack. “In the first place we want to thank the Spanish consulate in Pakistan for all their help,” they said in the message. “On Thursday [Javier] will fly to La-

hore, on the border with India. His initial intent is to continue his trip.” Another senior local administration official, Akbar Baluch, has confirmed the incident in which one of the attackers was also killed. Police said they did not know why Colorado was cycling through such a dangerous area. Provincial home secretary Asad Gilani said Mr Colorado had undergone a full medical checkup and was now “in the custody of the provincial administration”. In a statement, the Spanish foreign ministry expressed its condolences over the deaths of Mr Colorado’s guards.”The government of Spain wants to transmit to Pakistani authorities its profound concern and grief,” the statement said.

Germans among the dead in Pakistan air raid on extremists

Pakistan’s air force has staged one of its largest raids against the Taliban in the country’s northwest. According to Pakistan military sources, three German citizens with ties to al Qaeda could be among those killed. Sources from the Pakistan military said on Tuesday that Germans had been killed in a military air strike on the country’s northwest Waziristan region, a stronghold of the Taliban in Pakistan. They were reportedly extremists with links to al Qaeda. “Most of the terrorists killed [in the air strike] were foreign fighters, including three Germans,” a military source told news agency AFP. More than 40 Islamist extremists - the majority of which hailed from Uzbekistan - were killed in the Tuesday attack. Germany’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs could not confirm the deaths. However, one of its spokespeople told the DPA news agency: “The German embassy in Islamabad is in contact with local authorities and is working diligently to find out more.”

Pakistan’s air force launched a large-scale raid on the northwest Waziristan in retaliation for recent Taliban attacks, which left more than 30 military personnel dead. The Taliban has stepped up attacks on Pakistan’s military following the deaths of its leader Hakimullah Mesud and deputly Waliur Rehman, both of whom were killed in US drone attacks at the end of last year. Those deaths also prompted the militant group to refuse to enter into negotiations with Pakistan’s new government under Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who was accused by the militants of supporting the US attack. AFP reported on Monday that Taliban spokesperson Shahid had said the movement was “ready for meaningful negotiations despite facing huge leadership losses if the government proves its authority and sincerity” by following through with promises to bring an end to drone attacks and its military presence in tribal areas. The Pakistani military has been fighting for years in the tribal areas against militants who want to overthrow the government and establish an ultraconservative Islamic state across Pakistan.(AFP)

UN rescinds Iran’s invite for Syria talks

The UN secretary-general has withdrawn his invitation to Iran to join this week’s Syria peace talks, saying he is “deeply disappointed” by Iran’s statements on Monday. A spokesman for Ban Ki-moon announced the withdrawal less than 24 hours after Ban surprised the US and others by saying he had invited Syria’s closest regional ally. The withdrawn invitation came shortly after Iran’s UN ambassador declared the Islamic Republic would not join the Syria talks if required to accept 2012 Geneva roadmap. “The statement today in Tehran by the foreign ministry spokesperson fell short by some measure of what the secretary-general expected to

hear,” said UN spokesman Martin Nesirky, adding that the UN has been in close contact with the US and Russians over the weekend. Nesirky said senior Iranian officials had assured Ban that Iran understood the terms of his invitation. “The SecretaryGeneral is deeply disappointed by Iranian public statements today that are not at all consistent with that stated commitment,’’ Nesirky said. “He continues to urge Iran to join the global consensus behind the Geneva Communique.” The talks are set to begin Wednesday in the Swiss city of Montreux, with delegations from the United States, Russia and close to 40 other countries attending. Rohingya deaths denied by Myanmar government

Myanmar authorities have denied any civilian deaths but confirmed a clash took place after a rights group reported Several people including women and a child have been killed in an attack on Rohingya Muslims in western Myanmar. The authorities on Friday confirmed that clashes had taken place, in which a police officer was presumed to have been killed, but said there had been no information about the killings of women and at least on child, as reported by Thailand-based advocacy group Arakan Project. Details of the unrest on Friday were unclear, but Rohingya activists said at least two women and a child were stabbed to death in an attack on a village near the border with Bangladesh earlier this week, with possibly several dozen casualties. The United States and Britain called on the government to investigate and to hold those responsible accountable. “We have had no information about killings,” Deputy Information Minister Ye Htut told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting of Southeast Asian foreign ministers in Myanmar’s ancient city of Bagan. His comments

were echoed by other government officials. Chris Lewa, director of the Thailand-based advocacy group Arakan Project, which has been documenting abuses against Rohingya for more than a decade, said details about the violence in Du Char Yar Tan village were still emerging, with many conflicting reports. The death toll could be anywhere from 10 to 60, said Lewa, whose sources range from a village administrator to witnesses. One described the slashed-up bodies of three acquaintances two women and a 14-year-old boy found in their homes. Some of the victims also were hit by bullets, the group was told. Medecins Sans Frontieres, or Doctors Without Borders, which runs a nearby clinic, said it was concerned that residents who are in hiding may not be getting the medical care they need. “MSF confirms that on Wednesday it saw two wounded people suffering from injuries inflicted as a result of violence, one from a gunshot wound and the other exhibiting injuries consistent with a beating,” said the group’s Myanmar head, Peter-Paul de Groote. Myanmar, a predominantly Buddhist nation of 60 million people, has been grappling with sectarian violence for nearly two years. Myanmar’s government considers the estimated 800,000 Rohingya in the country to be foreigners while many citizens see them as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and view them with hostility. More than 240 people have been killed and another 250,000 forced to flee their homes, most of them Muslims from the western state of Rakhine. Source: Al-Jazeera

Syria : Continued from pg 1 in captivity before being taken to a military hospital to be photographed. “The pictures show over a period of years the systematic murder of detainees by starvation, by torture, the gouging out of eyes, the hideous beating of people, the mutilation of bodies,” De Silva said. The report says that all but one of the victims were male. Most appeared to be aged between 20 and 40 and a “very significant percentage” showed evidence of starvation. The defector “informed the inquiry team that there could be as many as 50 bodies a day to photograph which required 15 to 30 minutes of work per corpse”, the report said. He said the purpose of the photos was firstly to be able to issue death certificates - falsely saying that the victims had died in hospital - and secondly to confirm to the regime that executions had been carried out. The bodies would then be buried in rural areas. The authors of the report said they found the informant and his evidence to be credible after subjecting them to “rigorous scrutiny” and have made their findings available to the UN, governments and human rights groups. The fact that the defector had not claimed to have actually witnessed any of the killings added credibility to his story, they said. He later escaped from Syria fearing for the safety of his family. “There came a point a few months ago where he decided that he couldn’t take it anymore, so he decided to defect and he left. He could well have gone to Qatar, yes,” said De Silva. Crane called the evidence “amazing” and suggested there was a strong case for prosecution. “Now we have direct evidence of what was happening to people who had disappeared,” he said. “This is the first provable, direct evidence of what has happened to at least 11,000 human beings who have been tortured and executed and apparently disposed of.” Source: Al-Jazeera

tions between the Syrian government and its opponents, the first since the three-year civil war began, start Friday in Geneva. But Ban’s announcement on Sunday night that Iran was invited to Montreux angered Syria’s main Western-backed opposition group, which over the weekend had announced it would join the talks after intense international pressure. Russia has said it would be a mistake not to include Iran. “Among the countries also invited are Australia, Mexico, the Republic of Korea, South Africa, Japan, Brazil, India, Indonesia, and many others. So if there is no Iran in this list than I think the peace talks will resemble a hypocrisy,” said Russian For-

eign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The US said on Monday it was hopeful after the UN withdrew Iran’s invitation and that all parties could refocus their efforts to end the Syrian civil war. “We are hopeful that, in the wake of today’s announcement, all parties can now return to focus on the task at hand, which is bringing an end to the suffering of the Syrian people and beginning a process towards a long overdue political transition,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement. Psaki said the purpose of the conference was to implement a 2012 plan to establish a political transition in Syria. Source: Al-Jazeera

Rift widens in debate over referendum on transit funding

The rift over a provincial referendum on transit funding is widening, with B.C. Transportation Minister Todd Stone blaming Metro Vancouver mayors for not coming up with a specific transit expansion plan for the next 20 years. But local mayors say they have no control over what is built or when because that falls under TransLink and its board, which is overseen by the province. Plus, they add, many of their suggested funding sources for transit, such as a vehicle levy, have been rejected by the province. “We feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football, every time we run up and take a kick, we end up on our ass,” Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan said. “What plan can we get in place? We don’t have any staff, we don’t operate a board. We don’t have any control or any choices.” Stone’s comments to The Vancouver Sun Tuesday come ahead of the provincially imposed referendum, slated for this November’s municipal elections. Mayors have argued the referendum is doomed to fail, mainly because the province has yet to come up with a specific question. Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts last week suggested the referendum should ask voters if they would be willing to see a reduction in the gas tax, keep property taxes for TransLink at three per cent and look at road pricing, such as $1 tolls on every bridge and tunnel. Stone said while he is pleased with Watts’ question, the road pricing part is too vague. He said the province needs time to come up with a clear question that tells the public what they are voting for as well as the cost and funding sources. He argued Surrey wants three light rail lines, for instance, but has not said whether they would be phased in over time, while Vancouver’s plans for a subway line to the University of B.C. would be a lot more expensive than an above-grade SkyTrain expansion of the Millennium Line. Even if the mayors want to use an already legislated $50-vehicle levy to raise money, he noted, “you’d have to have one heck of one” because that would raise only $50 million annually. Plus, they would have to raise fares. “The question is if you look at the specifics, what does that look like? What’s in and what’s not will dramatically affect the price tag. At the end of the day, people need to know what they are vot-

ing for,” Stone said. “The referendum is intended to break a logjam. The mayors differ significantly on a vision among themselves.” But Watts noted the mayors are at the behest of TransLink, which has already drawn up a 2040 transportation plan and put forward several supplements. “It makes no sense. We’ve got MOUs (memorandums of understanding) that have been signed. We’ve had transportation ministers who have said they want to work together,” she said. “Clearly the initiative was a provincial initiative … I’m surprised that now it’s being pushed back onto the mayors to come up with a plan.” Corrigan added Stone is “spinning out of control.” He maintains the province should be working with the mayors on a new governance model for TransLink so they can start making the decisions. He noted the mayors didn’t support faregates and wanted light rail rather than SkyTrain for the Evergreen Line because it would have been cheaper. And although he insists he doesn’t want to funnel more money into the system until the mayors take control of it, Corrigan added $50 million a year would go a long way, especially by expanding bus service. “There would be no problem if that money came into the system, you’re looking at a five per cent overall increase in TransLink budget,” he said. “That would accommodate growth. Whether we can fund a subway or light rail line, that’s out of the question.” Stone, who met with North Vancouver District Mayor Richard Walton Monday, said he expects to make progress on the referendum question and the governance model in the next month. “I don’t believe it’s time to throw the towel in.” Source: Vancouver Sun

5 I N T E R N A T I O N A L Thailand capital in state After warm Israeli of emergency after welcome, Palestinians attacks cooler on Harper’s visit Rabi ul Awal 22, 1435 H January 24, 2014

Thailand’s capital was under a state of emergency after the government moved to tighten security as protesters trying to oust Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra threatened to disrupt an election she has called for early next month. Labour Minister Chalerm Yubumrung said that the measure will continue for 60 days beginning Wednesday, but did not announce any specific actions. The decree greatly expands the power of security forces to issue orders and search, arrest and detain people, with limited judicial and parliamentary oversight. The areas covered had already been placed under tougher-than-normal security under the country’s Internal Security Act. A leader of Thailand’s pro-government “red shirt” movement was shot and wounded in a drive-by shooting on Wednesday in the northeastern town of Udon Thani, in what police said appeared to be a politically motivated attack. Kwanchai Praipana, who leads thousands of redshirted pro-government supporters in Udon Thani province, was sitting outside his home when he was shot by unidentified assailants, police said. He was wounded in the arm and leg. “From what we saw on CCTV, a bronze pickup truck drove by and several rounds were fired at the house,” Police Colonel Kowit Tharoenwattanasuk told Reuters. “The investigation has just begun but we believe this is a politically motivated crime.” The shooting could further raise tension in the country after Yingluck’s government imposed the state of emergency in the capital. The state of emergency follows increasing attacks at protest sites for which the government and the protesters blame each other. These include grenades thrown in daylight and drive-by shootings. The protesters escalated their tactics this month with a threat

to “shut down” the capital to prevent the government from functioning. Yingluck said the government, through a newly established Center for Maintaining Peace and Order, “will take care of the situation according to international practices, which is something we have always said. Primarily, we have to use the principle of negotiation first.” Protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban, in speeches afterward to followers, vowed to continue demonstrating and questioned whether the declaration was justified, saying the protesters had been peaceful. “Come and get us!” he cried. “Whatever they warn us not to do, we will do,” he declared. “We will march on the routes they ban. ... If they order us not to rally, we will be here indefinitely. If they ask us not to use loudspeakers at night, we will just keep going 24 hours a day at every stage!” The protests are the latest episode in an eight-year political conflict that pits Bangkok’s middle class and royalist establishment against the mainly poorer supporters of Yingluck and her billionaire brother, ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra, who was toppled by the military in 2006 after protesters accused him of corruption and abuse of power. Protesters now say Yingluck’s government is carrying on Shinawatra’s practices by using the family fortune and state funds to influence voters and cement its power. Yingluck has called an election for Feb. 2, which she will almost certainly win and which the opposition plans to boycott. Protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban has also rejected the election outright. He accuses Shinawatra of nepotism and wants to change the electoral system to eradicate the influence of Shinawatra, who lives in exile in Dubai to avoid a jail term handed down in 2008 for abuse of power. Human Rights Watch criticized the emergency decree for allowing excessive use of power and possible human rights violations. Sunai Phasuk, a senior researcher for the New York-based group, said the security situation had not become so bad that police could not perform their duties, and the decree could be seen as having been implemented for political rather than public safety reasons. Vancouver : Continued from pg 1 sticker shock.” Hemer says companies will have to keep a close eye on housing affordability if they want to keep attracting executives to Vancouver. “Will they have to adjust or change, provide greater incentives, provide housing allowances that offset some of these differentials? Those are strategies that are used periodically now, that might increase,” says Hemer. But UBC business professor Tsur Somerville says the high cost of housing in Vancouver may not be a bad thing. “If you’ve got the most attractive city in the world, it should have the highest priceto-income ratio,” says Somerville. “The amenities both force up the house prices because people want to be there and they lower the incomes because employers can get away with paying less.” Meanwhile, the problem of housing affordability is not unique to Vancouver. Canada’s major metropolitan markets all have a rating of “severely unaffordable,” and the report listed Canadian housing as the most overvalued among 20OECD nations. In addition to Vancouver, the three least affordable metropolitan mar-

kets in Canada were all in British Columbia: Victoria, Kelowna and the Fraser Valley. The country’s most affordable markets were Moncton and St. John in New Brunswick. However, when major markets are excluded, Canada’s overall housing was rated only “moderately unaffordable,” outperforming Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and the U.K., where housing prices were all higher. “Housing affordability is an important determinant of the standard of living, because higher-cost housing leaves less discretionary income,” says the report. “Severely unaffordable markets are also more attractive to buyers seeking extraordinary returns on investment.” The report cites London, Vancouver and the U.S. West Coast as prime examples of this trend. The study also cited a recent Royal Bank of Canada report. “Detached housing, which is preferred in Canada,” it says, “now requires more than 80 per cent of median household income, 2½ times the 32 per cent recommended by Canada Mortgage and Housing for mortgage eligibility.” Source: CBC News

On Monday, Harper became the first Canadian Prime Minister to address the Israeli Parliament [Knesset], an honor previously bestowed upon such notables as Bill Clinton and George W. Bush; King Juan Carlos of Spain; German Chancellor Angela Merkel; and former and present French Presidents Francois Mitterand and Francois Hollande. To Israeli diplomats who are hosting a succession of international leaders far more critical of its policies than Harper, the Canadian’s visit stands in contrast. “Stephen Harper has been very clear, very public and very straightforward in his policies,” Israeli Deputy Foreign Ministry spokesman Paul Hirshson told The Media Line. “It’s not because he’s doing us a favor. It’s because he believes it’s what’s right for Canada. It’s a nice feeling having him here.” Despite the welcome warmth, some Israelis believe that Canada is nevertheless not as important on the diplomatic front. Jonathan Livny, an Israeli lawyer, told The Media Line that, “I have Canadian clients, but Israel doesn’t really care about Canada. They don’t see Canada as having the same kind of international significance as the United States.” It was not surprising to many that the atmosphere was more tense during Harper’s visit to the Palestinian cities of Bethlehem and Ramallah earlier in the day. A Palestinian source speaking to The Media Line on con-

dition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press characterized the mood as “tense,” noting that the Canadian security detail was larger than that of most other heads of government visiting Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. In his remarks in Ramallah, Abbas thanked Harper for Canada’s financial aid and said he hoped relations between Canada and the Palestinians would improve. Abbas took note of Canada’s decision to vote against Palestinian statehood at the United Nations when Ottawa took the position of the United States and Israel that statehood could come only as the result of negotiations between the parties rather than by a unilateral act. Some Palestinians were skeptical that Harper could make a real contribution to the Palestinian push for an independent state. Source: NP

EU and US ease some sanctions against Iran

The European Union and the United States have suspended a range of sanctions against Iran after Tehran began implementing a deal to curb its nuclear programme. The move eases restrictions on trade in petrochemicals and precious metals and on the provision of insurance for oil shipments, among other measures. In the US, the Treasury Department said that now that Iran has fulfilled its initial nuclear commitments under the deal, “the administration has taken the necessary steps to pause efforts to further reduce Iranian crude oil exports”. An EU statement on Monday said the bloc had “suspended certain EU restrictive measures against Iran for a period of six months”. Earlier in the day, Iranian state media said the country had started to shut down its most sensitive nuclear work, as required under the deal. The United Nations nuclear agency, the International Atomic Energy Agency, confirmed that higher-level uranium enrichment in the Natanz facility in central Iran had been stopped. The West alleges that Iran is covertly using its nuclear programme to build a nuclear bomb. Tehran insists the programme is solely for peaceful purposes. The historic deal reached in Geneva on November 24 that calls for an end to higher-level enrichment in exchange for the lifting of some economic sanctions. Iranian state TV said authorities halted enrichment of uranium to 20 percent by disconnecting the cascades of centrifuges enriching uranium at the facility. That level is just steps away from bomb-making mate-

rials. The broadcast said international inspectors were on hand to witness the stoppage before leaving to monitor the suspension of enrichment at Fordo, another uranium enrichment site in central Iran. The official IRNA news agency said Iran also started on Monday to convert part of its stockpile of 20 percent enriched uranium to oxide, which can be used to produce nuclear fuel but is difficult to reconvert for weapons use. Under the Geneva deal, Iran agreed to halt its 20 percent enrichment programme but continue enrichment up to 5 percent. It also agreed to convert half of its stockpile of 20 percent enriched uranium to oxide and dilute the remaining half to 5 percent over a period of six months. In addition to the enrichment measures, the six-month interim deal also commits Iran to opening its nuclear programme to greater UN inspections and providing more details on its nuclear activities and facilities. The Disappointed Employable Canadians Although, the government’s top priorities include job creation, economic growth and long term prosperity, yet the bitter things like trade deficit, the manufacturers’ interests to outsource, and the economic recessionary periods are among the woes that can’t be ignored. Last November’s gain of 21,600 new job opportunities was ridiculous, because the rosy picture turned into a gloomy one just a month later. The ‘December disappointment’ sent many people home. Loss of 45,900 Canadian jobs cannot be taken lightly, as the unemployment rate jumped to 7.2% from 6.9% just in one month. This alone declared the year 2013 as the weakest one since 2009. No doubt, the research through Statistics Canada pages shows a fluctuation in the numbers of job losses and gains during the months in question. However, the numbers are bouncing back and forth in the negative or positive territory depending upon various factors. In November, there was a surprising improvement in manufacturing sector, but loss of jobs occurred in goods producing industries. In December, there was a decline in construction work, agriculture, forestry, service producing sectors-educational services, accommodation and food services.

For the month, Ontario and Alberta led the provinces lower with losses of 39,000 and 12,000 respectively. British Columbia added 13,000 jobs and Newfoundland and Labrador gained 1,900. By industry, there were 19,000 fewer jobs in educational services, while the other services category, which includes personal care as well as civic and social organizations, lost 15,000. The agriculture sector lost 9,800 and natural resources lost 8,000. Health care and social assistance were the only areas to experience gains in December as the sector added 22,000 jobs. Looking from provincial perspective, Alberta recorded the fastest, year over year employment growth with a 3.3 per cent surge and steady gains throughout the year. The weakness was mostly seen in full-time employment, which dropped 60,000 with a 14,200 increase in part-time employment. The private employment lost 26,300, while the self-employed lost 37,900. But, the public employment rose by 18,200. Based on the trend, the negative growth is likely to be more than reversed in the months ahead back to November rate of 6.9%. Paul Ferley, Assistant Chief Economist, RBC Economics said, “Our expectation of a near-

term reversal of the December employment drop is more consistent with the Bank of Canada just maintaining the current highly stimulative monetary conditions. Our forecast assumes that the overnight rate will be maintained at 1.00% into the second quarter of 2015.” Whereas, BMO Capital Markets chief economist Doug Porter said, “the ‘dismal jobs data’ will add pressure on the loonie and stoke chatter about the possibility of an interest rate cut by the Bank of Canada.” He suggested, “It will likely take more than one month of disappointing job growth to trigger a rate cut.” “We continue to believe the bank will need to see an extended period of economic underperformance and even lower inflation before they would even consider easing.” On the other hand, Bank of Canada (BoC) governor Stephen Poloz has suggested that the central bank’s next policy move is just as likely to be a cut in interest rates as a hike. By the way: Statistics Canada reported earlier this week that Canada’s trade deficit edged higher in November as imports inched up and exports stalled. In fact, Canadian ‘markets and job’ data is weaker than expected, so is that of the United States which happens to be Canada’s biggest trading partner. The U.S. added only 74,000 jobs in De-

He said, “I think if you step back and look at the overall jobs picture, we still have the strongest job record in all the G7.” He claims, “The overall picture for the Canadian economy is still very strong. Furthermore, low, stable and predictable inflation is the basis for a well-functioning economy allowing Canadians to spend and invest with confidence. This means a good monetary policy attracts healthy economy. Good thing is the BoC plays a vital role cautiously in reversing the negative economic condition to maintain economic balance by offering good stimulative monetary conditions. When demand is strong, the BoC raises interest rates to cool off the overheated economy. But, when demand is weak, inflationary pressures are likely to ease. In that case, the bank goes for rate cuts to stimulate the economy. Thus, economics is when demand exceeds the supply, so prices will rise. The bank is here to implement what is necessary to maintain the balance. As, the stubborn economic hardship is a cause of concern for everyone; appropriate steps must be taken to reverse the looming economic uncertainty to avoid any

‘Plea to Canadian Government’ for ‘War resisters’

By: Gulshan Aalani * With due respect a humble request to the Canadian Gov. to pay a serious attention to the War resisters, recognize their high quality of ethics and moral values and grant them asylum, most deserved by them. The Iraq War resisters support campaign is a humanitarian act based on moral, ethics, justice and freedom of choice to kill or not to kill. The war resisters, (cannot be called deserters); Jeremy Hinzman and many others with children seeking asylum, should be allowed to stay in safety in Canada and be respected as the most pious who has rejected the evil of illegal war that is proven and confirmed illegal officially. Even the P.M.Steven Harper declared it as “An absolute error”, also opposed by the majority of the world’s godly, compassionate people with divine vision, similarly to the Vietnam war too was rejected by the majority, including former Boxer Cassius Clay/Mohamad Ali when drafted refused to obey such order on moral grounds, same believed by all the resisters proving their extra ordinary moral characters,

which should be adopted by us all to make this world a better place. The heart breaking statement from a young first female resister Kimberly Rivera: “--seeing the civilians who don’t get to escape the trauma or the pain and loss of people they love, ---people losing their lives for greed of a nation, the effects on the soldiers, who come back with the new problems: nightmares, anxiety, depression, anger, Alcohol abuse, missing limbs, and scars from burns, etc. I am just glad I get to be a Mum again”. “U.S. invasion violated international human rights standards” “I would be wrong to be a tool for destruction”, Robin Long. We are all aware of the sufferings of the Soldiers with PTSD. Remarkable belief of ethics, who held good position with pay, yet rejected to participate in evil deeds, a good example for others who are busy looting, killing and in drugs. Consequently, the war resisters should be freed from the chains of slavery as forcing the illegal order is like a slavery, forbidden by the Higher Power. No job is compulsory and giving freedom to quit.

Stephen Harper welcomed as ‘great friend’ of Israel

where he said with mouth full that Canada will stand with you in water and fire. “We’re not really expecting anything because he is completely pro-Israel,” a senior Palestinian official told The Media Line. “He is coming to drink coffee with Abu Mazen and get his picture taken. That’s it.” But others felt the visit offered a chance to improve the relationship between the Palestinian Authority and Canada. At this situation what the result of this trip and what we will expect with PM Harper for Palestinians other than reduceing Canadian finacial support for Mr. Abu Mazen , let us see.

By: Shawkat Hassan Richmond On Jan 19th Mr. Stephen Harper is the first Canadian PM to make such a visit to Israel since its proclamation of statehood in1948. Previous Canadian officials and MP maintained the stand of the United Nations on the issue of Israeli and illegal occupation of Palestinians land. F A I T H Ibn Abbas: The Prophet (sw) delivered a sermon and said, “…Lo! Some men from my followers will be brought and taken towards the left side, whereupon I will say, ‘O Lord, (these are) my companions!’ It will be said, ‘You do not know what new things they introduced (into the religion) after you.’ I will then say as the righteous pious slave, Jesus, said, ‘I was a witness over them while I dwelt among them when Thou didst take me up Thou wast the Watcher over them, and You are the Witness to all things.’ (5: 117) Then it will be said, ‘(O Muhammad) these people never stopped to apostate since you left them.” (Bukhari, Kitabul Tafsir, Hadith 4259)

Islam Preaches Brotherhood

God said: What prevented you (O Satan) that you did not prostrate when I commanded you? Iblees (the Satan) replied: I am better than him (Adam). You created me from fire, and him You created from clay. (Qur’an 7:12). Satan thought himself superior to Adam on account of his origins. Since that day, Satan has misled many of Adam’s descendants into believing themselves superior to others, causing them to persecute and exploit their fellow man. Quite often, religion has been used to justify racism. As Muhammad was God’s final Prophet and Messenger, his mission was a universal one, intended for not only his own nation, the Arabs, but all the peoples of the world. The Prophet said: “Every other Prophet was sent to his nation exclusively, while I have been sent to all of humanity.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhari) “And We have not sent you (O Muhammad) except as a bearer of glad tidings and a Warner to all mankind, but most of people know not.” (Qur’an 34:28) One of the first to accept Islam was an Abyssinian slave named Bilal. Traditionally, black Africans were a lowly people in the sight

of Arabs who thought them to be of little use beyond entertainment and slavery. When Bilal embraced Islam, his pagan master had him brutally tortured in the scorching desert heat until Abu Bakr, the Prophet’s closest friend, rescued him by buying his freedom. The Prophet appointed Bilal to call the believers to prayer. Thus, a one-time lowly slave won a unique honor as Islam’s first muezzin. And indeed We have honored the Children of Adam... (Qur’an 17:70) Western romantics hail ancient Greece as being the birthplace of democracy. The reality was that, as slaves and women, the vast majority of Athenians were denied the right to elect their rulers. Yet, Islam ordained that a slave could himself be ruler! The Prophet ordered: “Obey your ruler even if he be an Abyssinian slave.” (Ahmad) Like most of his countrymen, Salman Farsi, who later became a prominent companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him) was raised a devout Zoroastrian. However, after an encounter with some Christians at worship, he accepted Christianity as something better. Salman then traveled extensively

in search of knowledge, from the service of one learned monk to another, the last of whom said: “O son! I do not know of anyone who is on the same (creed) as we are. However, the time of the emergence of a Prophet is at hand. This Prophet is upon the religion of Abraham. The monk then proceeded to describe this Prophet, his character and where he would appear. Salman migrated to Arabia, the land of the prophecy, and when he heard about and met Muhammad, he immediately recognized him from his teacher’s descriptions and embraced Islam. Salman became renowned for his knowledge and was the first person to translate the Qur’an into another language, Persian. Once, whilst the Prophet was amongst his companions, the following was revealed to him: “It is He (God) Who had sent among the unlettered (the Arabs) a Messenger (Muhammad) from among themselves... and (also to) others (i.e. non-Arabs) among them who have not yet joined them (as Muslims)... (Qur’an 62:2-3) God’s Messenger then placed his hand on Salman and said: “Even if the Faith were near (the stars of) Pleiades, a man from amongst these (Persians) would surely attain it. (Saheeh Muslim) Another companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Suhayb, a Roman, was born in the luxurious house of his father, who was a client governor for the Persian emperor. While he was still a child, Suhayb was captured by Byzantine raiders and sold into slavery in Constantinople. Suhayb eventually es-

caped from bondage and fled to Makkah, a popular place of asylum, where he soon became a prosperous merchant nick-named “Ar-Rumi,” the Roman, due to his Byzantine tongue and upbringing. When Suhayb heard Muhammad preach, he was at once convinced of the truth of his message and embraced Islam. Like all the early Muslims, Suhayb was persecuted by the pagans of Makkah. So, he traded all his wealth in exchange for safe passage to join the Prophet at Madinah, whereupon the Prophet, delighted to see Suhayb, greeted him thrice: “Your trade has been fruitful, O (Suhayb)! Your trade has been fruitful! God had informed the Prophet of Suhayb’s exploits before their reunion with this revelation: “And there is a type of man who ransoms himself to earn the pleasure of God. And God is full of kindness to His servants. “ (Qur’an 2:207) The Prophet loved Suhayb a great deal and described him as having preceded the Romans to Islam. Abdullah, who was Hussein bin Salam before he accepted Islam was the most learned rabbi and leader of the Medinan Jews. He was denounced and vilified by them when he embraced Islam. The Prophet re-named Hussein, “Abdullah”, meaning “Servant of God”, and gave him the glad tidings that he was destined for Paradise. Abdullah addressed his tribesmen saying: “O assembly of Jews! Be conscious of God and accept what Muhammad has brought. By God! You certainly know that he is God’s Messenger and you can find prophecies about him and mention of his name and characteristics in your Torah. I for my part declare

that he is the Messenger of God. I have faith in him and believe that he is true. I (for one) recognize him.” God revealed the following about Abdullah: “And a witness from the Children of Israel testified to this (Qur’an being from God) like (the Torah). So he believed while (most of) you (Jews) are too proud (to believe). (Qur’an 46:10) Thus, in the ranks of the Prophet Muhammad’s Companions could be found Africans, Persians, Romans and Israelites; representatives of every known continent. As the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Indeed, my friends and allies are not the tribe of so and so. Rather, my friends and allies are the pious, wherever they may be.”_ (Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Saheeh Muslim) This universal brotherhood preached by Islam was championed by the Prophet’s companions after him. When the companion, Ubada bin As-Samit, led a delegation to Muqawqis, the Christian patriarch of Alexandria, the latter exclaimed: ‘Get this black man away from me and bring in his stead another to talk to me! ... How can you be content that a black man should be the foremost among you? Is it not more fitting that he be below you?’ “Indeed no!”, Ubada’s comrades replied, “Though he is black as you see, he is still the foremost among us in position, intelligence and wisdom; for black is not despised among us.” “Truly, the Believers are but brothers...” (Qur’an 49:10) Source- www.islamreligion.com

Zikr, Hamad o Naat , Darood o Salam and Eid Milad un Nabi (saw) Celebrates in Town

NAQASHBANDI CENTRE VANCOVER “So peace is on me (Eesa Alaihissalam) the day I was born, the day that I die, and the day that I shall be raised up to life (again)”! (Surah Maryam, 33) On Jan 12, a beautiful gathering for Zikr Allah Subhan o Tahla, Darood o Salam and Milad e Mustafa(saw)took place in the presence of Sheikh Ahl-e-sunnat wal Jamat Sayed Nurjan in Naqashbandi Sufi centre in Vancouver. Many participants presented Hadiya-e- Hamad o Naats. A number of youth and families attended this spiritual evening. In this centre Zikr, Darood o Salam and Seerat un Nabi(saw) is narrated every Thursday, Friday and Saturday after Maghrib prayer. At this Milad e Mustafa (saw) after the recitation of Quran, Syed Noor Jan explained the birthday of beloved Prophet Mohammad(saw) with references of different Quranic Ayats and Haidths. He talked about how much Allah (swt) loves His beloved Mohammad(saw). He reminded that we should be a

practising Muslim in our daily life, and spend our lives in the path of Allah(swt). Syed Nurjan’s main focus was real love with Allah(swt), and said that everyone should accept Allah by heart as a supreme power of creation and helping each other by being respectful and loving to everyone who follows the way of our beloved Holy Prophet (PBUH). He summarised the daily life of Prophet Mohammad(saw) and his love with his Ummah. We should all try to pray five times a day and recite Darood many times a day and it will help get mercy. The evening ended with Darood o Salam, with Du’a.”May Allah Subhana wa Taala reward all those who took part in the event for Milad e Mustafa (saw) and give them success in this life and the hereafter (Ameen). At this event Mo-e-Mubarak ( Prophet’s Hair) has been shown. A variety of delicious food dishes were prepared and served by volunteers and cake was distributed.

IJTIMA BY DAWAT-E-ISLAMI “Did We not expand for you, [O Muhammad], your breast?,And We removed from you your burden,- Which had weighed upon your back,- And raised high for you your repute,- For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease,- Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease,- So when you have finished [your duties], then stand up [for worship],- And to your Lord direct [your] longing. Surat Ash-Sharĥ (Ayats 1-8)” On Jan 12, during the night of 12th Rabi-ul Awaal Dawat e Islami BC celebrated the holy Prophet Mohammad’s (PBUH) Birthday at Fiji Islamic Centre. The program was started with the recitation of Quran by Salman Attari. After Zikr and Darood o Salam a beautiful Naat session was held by local Naat Khawans and also included Umair Attari from Calgarywho was also the master of ceremony. Maulana Abdul Lateef Naumani, Imam and Khateeb of Fiji Islamic Centre Surrey was invited to deliver his speech at this occasion. After the recitation of related Quranic Ayaat and Hadiths Maulana Naumani said that till this day some Muslims are confused whether we should celebrate Milad or not. As per haidth “ Abu Qatada al-Ansari narrates in Sahih Muslim, Kitab as-siyam, that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked about the fast of Monday, and he answered: “That is the day that I was born and that is the day I received

the prophethood.” Jamat e Ahel Sunnah celebrate Milad not only for Naats Khawani but also to narrate the Seerat un Nabi(saw) and obey the teachings of Islam and promote practice of Prophet’s Sunnah in our daily life. After the Urdu speech, a short speech in English was delivered by Maulana Aabid Attari from Vancouver. He first recited some Quranic verses and narrated Hadiths followed by a lecture on Seerat un Nabi (saw). He emphasised that for all Muslims, connection with Allah(swt) and love for His beloved Prophet Mohammad(saw) are the successful keys of our daily life. Prophet Mohammad (saw) said, “None of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father, his children and all mankind.” [Bukhari] So everyone should pray that our love with beloved Mohammad(saw) will increase day by day and do Zikr and send Daorod on Him(PBUH) many times in a day. Aabid Attari also recited some Naats in Urdu and Punjabi. This spiritual Zikar o Darood o Salam and Seerat Milad un Nabi continued from 7 pm to Fajar prayer in morning and people did the Sahur for 12th Rabi ul Awaal fasting. Darood o Salam and Duaa were recited many times in this gathering. Arrangement of refreshments, dinner and Sahur(till Fajr Prayer) were there for all the attendees.

AT FIJI ISLAMIC CENTRE BY IMAC

“O you who covers himself [with a garment],- Arise and warn,- And your Lord glorify,- And your clothing purify,- And uncleanliness avoid,- And do not confer favor to acquire more,- But for your Lord be patient.”----------- Sura Mudassir (Ayats 1-7) Muslims of Lower Mainland gathered at Fiji Islamic Centre Surrey on Jan 18, where the International Muslim Academy of Canada(IMAC) organised the annual 18th Jashne Eid Milad-unNabi(Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam). A special speaker from Calgary and local associations were also invited in this event along with the Muslim community. Mr. Aseem Khan was the master of ceremony of this event. First, he requested Hafiz Iqbal for recitation of Quran. After that Mr. Khan invited local Naat Khawans to recite Naats in their beautiful voices. Local dynamic Urdu speaker Maulana A. Latif Naumani, Imam and Khateeb of Fiji Islamic Centre recited the relevant Quranic Suras and narrated few Haidths. He said that it is Allah blessing that we Islamic scholars are gathered under one roof for the celebration of beloved Mohammad (SAW). Maulana Naumani delivered a stunning bayan in Urdu in which he focused on the birth of Prophet Mohammad(SAW) and love with Allah and his messen-

ger Mohammad(pbuh). He said that all Muslims should try to understand the respect of Mohammad(pbuh) and should be true followers by practicing. We always remember the Companions of Prophet(pbuh)’s life patterns and how they practised what was preached by the Prophet and scarified their lives for its sake. He reminded everyone of a hadith:“Every Monday, Abu Lahab in his grave is released from punishment because he freed his handmaid Thuwayba when she brought him the news of the Prophet’s birth. (Bukhari, book of Nikah and Ibn Kathir’s Sirat al-Nabi Vol.1, p. 124, Mawlid al-Nabi p. 21, and al-Bidaya p.” Mr Khan introduced the special guest speaker Allama Hafiz Qari Ghalib Hussain Akber Chisti of Calgary and invited him to deliver his spiritual speech. Allama Chisti did Qirat and recited many Naats portions in his beautiful golden voice. During his speech he also recited Muzzammil(from Ayats 1-7) “O you who wraps himself [in clothing],- Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little, - Half of it - or subtract from it a little,- Or add to it, and recite the Qur’an with measured recitation,- Indeed, We will cast upon you a heavy word,- Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for concurrence [of heart and tongue] and more suitable for words,- Indeed, for

you by day is prolonged occupation…” He delivered a powerful speech on Seeret-un-Nabi of Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) in the light of Quran and Sunnah. He discussed on many topics in such as the Prophet as “Bashar”. In Quran Allah tells Muslims “not to raise their voice upon Prophet Mohammad (saw) voice”. ‘O Allah, forgive them because they know not who am I.” He is Allah’s gift of mercy and kindness for us and the mankind. He asked where our youth is going today? Is it because their parents are not giving them proper attention and not familiarizing them with Islamic teachings. He stressed the audience to hold the rope of Allah(swt) and obey the teachings of Prophet as per sunnah and said don’t miss any prayer intentionally in your daily life, don’t tell a lie and always recite Darood o Salam. The audience fully enjoyed this spiritual

gathering. After the Durood-o- Salam Mehfil Peer Afzal Ahmed Naqashbandi made Duaa for the Muslim Ummah. Maulana Naumani thanked all the guests, organizers and volunteers of this big 18th annual Jashnen Eid Milad un Nabi (saw)event who made tremendous effort to make this event successful and appreciated the supporters and people who catered delicious dishes for the guests.

MERCY FOR ALL OF MANKIND

By:Maheen Nusrat (UK) The last post I wrote was on the topic of Christmas-The birth of Jesus –Prophet ISA (Peace be upon him). It only seems befitting that today I would write about the Birth of my beloved Prophet Mohammed (Peace be upon him). It turns out that the celebration of the birth of this central figure of Islam is just as controversial as Jesus’. There are two camps on the topic of the celebration of the birth of the Prophet (PBUH). Group One vehemently opposes any such celebration or even the existence of such a celebration. They are also the same faction that opposes Christmas. The pretext being that there are only two festival allowed by the religion: the celebration of the two Eids. They further prove this by saying no such event ever took place during the life or after the death of the Prophet (PBUH). Group two is the group that supports the celebration of the birthday, presenting all sorts of references in support for this. Their prime argument is that the faith of the Believers of Islam is incomplete without the love of their beloved Prophet (PBUH).What is the extent of the love of the Prophet (PBUH)? As per them there is no such thing as the limit of that love because where that extent ends, begins the love of the Almighty. These groups are further sub-divided by their views on the levels of the Haram-ness on the topic of the celebration and about the levels of the extent through which you can celebrate this blessed day. Now, like most things in my life I don’t belong to one camp over the other. I understand the debate prohibiting the celebration, but I also understand the reasons for celebration. I am most definitely wary

of using Haram (prohibited)/Kuffar (disbelief)/Bidaa (innovation) to define the practice of celebration, just as much as I am against those who believe in the Mawlid (birthday) referring to the non-believers of Mawlid as infidels. I tend to hold a middle ground, and believe that excess of anything is generally a bad thing. But, anti-exorbitance is the framework through which I like to live my life. I am constantly questioning excessiveness and wastefulness of our material means. So, I do not support any extravagance in celebration whether be personal or religious. Now, having cleared that, I don’t think wishing a happy Mawlid un nabi, or promoting the recitation of Darud is wrong; nor do I necessarily support the idea of fancy Milaad gatherings. Milaad is a gathering where through poetry a person praises the Prophet (PBUH), him and expresses one’s love for him. Nothing wrong with poetry and nothing wrong with expressing your love for the Prophet (PBUH). The problem comes when people go to extreme measures to arrange these gatherings; spending lots of money, using lots of lighting and flags to decorate the streets and calling anyone who doesn’t support the idea of Milaad as an infidel. Recently, I came across a video that showcased an extreme example of the celebration of the birth, which included dancing to a song that objectified women, and likened them to alcohol. Both objectification and intoxication are prohibited in Islam and seems like a contradictory way to celebrate the birth of the man whose Prophethood is the birth of Islam. This definitely is where I would draw the line on celebration. What does the day of birth of the Prophet (Pbuh) mean for me? His birthday is a

reminder of the beautiful blessing that Allah Almighty bestowed upon this world and the next world; therefore, a cause for jubilation. It is a reminder for me as a Muslim to be thankful to be from his Ummah. It is a moment for me to ponder and really live the essence of his teachings. It is a chance for me to understand the importance of the precious gift of Shahadah (belief in the oneness of God) that I share with my fellow Muslims. I wish, instead of engaging in debates about the actual practice of celebrating Mawlid, perhaps we would live our lives being exemplary of the teachings of this great man. To me a better celebration would be to showcase mercy, kindness, good behaviour, honesty, integrity, faithfulness, charity and piety on a daily basis, but if not, then at least just on the day of his birth. Wouldn’t that be the greatest way to commemorate his birth? If instead of wasting tons of money on the Milaad celebration, we fed the orphans; or used the money to invest in medical or education for the poor; we would be upholding the real essence of the teachings of the Great Prophet of Islam. Sure, if you must show your love through hosting a Milaad, by all means, but let’s not turn it into a mockery by hosting elaborate events, competing and outdoing each other in the size of the events, using it as an excuse to buy the most expensive outfits for the gathering or wasting food at those said events. There is an opportunity every year on the 12th of Rabi-Al-Awal to celebrate the legacy of this great man of history. Let’s take the time to ponder upon his lesson, his teachings and pledge to at least instill a fraction of the patience and love this man possessed for everyone. He was a man of

simple means-the Prophet of the worlds, with often very little to eat, tattered clothes to wear, epitome of humbleness, patience and forgiveness. We, as his Ummah represent none of the characteristics possessed by this man. Let’s celebrate not by showing anger to someone whose idea of celebration differs from yours. Let’s celebrate by being patient, forgiving and realizing that we are all humans and can err. Love and understanding can heal and turn the evilest of hearts. Islamic history is replete with stories of such turning of the hearts all due to the mercy, and love shown by this Great man. Our beloved Prophet (PBUH) reacted not with anger or hatred-he was a visionary and knew that you can catch more bees with honey than vinegar. I, for one am happy that this month of Rabi ul Awaal is the of the birth of the man who was sent as a “Mercy to all of Mankind (AlAnbiyaa’’: 107), and to whom the Quran was revealed and of the man who spent his years crying: “Allahumma Ummati, Allahumma Ummati – O Allah my Ummah, O Allah my Ummah”. We are from that Ummah and we must not disservice this great man by engaging in petty arguments, hatred, lying and deceit. Instead of arguing about the celebration, and disrespecting one another, using vulgarity and derogatory language, instead of wasting the means Allah has bestowed upon us, we should walk the earth as the representatives of his teachings. That would be the true celebration of the birth of Muhammed-The Prophet (PBUH) and the greatest man on earth. Mawlid-Un-Nabi Mubarak! Allahuma salle ala sayyidina Muhammedin nabi yil ummi yi wa Ala aalihi wa asabhi wasalam.

All levels of Gov. must come together to create a safer, healthier Surrey

On Jan. 15, New Democrat Leader Adrian Dix, Surrey-Green Timbers MLA Sue Hammell and Surrey-Whalley MLA Bruce Ralston proposed the “Surrey Accord” at a news conference at the Newton Cultural Centre Surrey. in calling for all levels of government to listen to community outrage over violence in Surrey and come together to create a safer, healthier community. The plan comes two weeks after the brutal murder of hockey mom Julie Paskall, 53, who was beaten to death while she was waiting for her 16-year-old son outside the Newton Arena. New Democrat Leader Adrian Dix said Surrey RCMP are swamped with calls involving people with mental illness and substance abuse problems. The causes of crime, Dix said, are multi-faceted and all levels of government must be involved to address and fund the solutions. Harry Bains (Surrey-Newton) said Surrey has one of the highest crime rates in the province, yet ranks 31st in the number of police officers per capita. “In 2013, Surrey had 25 homicides, compared to six in Vancouver,” Bains said, adding 2012 statistics show Surrey has just 137 police officers per 100,000 residents. “Cities such as Vancouver, New Westminster,

West Vancouver, Delta, Port Moody and Langley all ranked better (in policing per capita).” Bains said Surrey residents often complain police response times are incredibly slow – when there’s a response at all. “(This) all points to one direction,” Bains said. “Police resources are overstretched and need help.” The Surrey Accord, he said, would find resources and examine policing models, such as community policing that would see more beat cops on patrol. The MLAs are also calling for the creation of a community court. Sue Hammell (Surrey-Green Timbers) said the accord will also deal with issues of mental health. She notes senior staff with Surrey RCMP have told her that the amount of time officers spend responding to calls involving people with mental illness is similar to that of Vancouver. In that city, 21 per cent of the calls involve someone who is mentally ill. “Clearly, police resources are being spent on responding to the mentally ill, and we must ask, especially under the circumstances, if that is an appropriate use of the police force,” Hammell said. She also said the number of unregulated drug and alcohol recovery homes in Surrey is astounding. “Fifty-five houses have been regulated and 45 more are on the

dock to be regulated,” “But we know in Surrey there are at least 67 houses – the mayor and I think there are more.” The homes need proper oversight for the benefit of those in need and for the protection of neighbourhoods, Hammell said. Bruce Ralston (SurreyWhalley) said as regulations fall into place, more provincial investment will be required for supportive housing. The federal government opted out of its supportive housing responsibilities some time ago, he said, and noted it’s time for all levels of government to begin providing it. He said people quite reasonably expect all levels of government to work together. “And that’s what we’re proposing,” Ralston said, adding the MLAs pitching the accord are long-time Surrey resi-

MP Jinny Sims Calls On Feds To Help Fund More Police In Surrey Local NDP MP blasts Conservatives for failing to deliver on 2006 promise A broken Conservative promise to put 2,500 more police on Canadian streets is negatively effecting Surrey’s ability to fund an adequate force, according to local New Democrat MP Jinny Sims. “Stephen Harper looked us in the eye and promised more frontline officers,”

said Sims. “It’s time for his government to finally deliver the help we need to keep our community safe.” The Conservatives’ 2006 election platform committed to “hiring more frontline enforcement personnel, including filling 1,000 RCMP positions” and working with local communities “to put at least 2,500 more police on the

The Truth About Tory Tax Tales

By: Hon. Ralph Goodale, PC, MP (Wascana) Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada

There are several things wrong with the Harper government’s never-ending claims that they are brilliant tax cutters. To start with, it’s untrue. Their first fiscal decision after taking office in 2006 was to increase personal income taxes. Later that fall, they imposed a toxic new Conservative tax on Income Trusts which obliterated $25-billion from the savings accounts of two million ordinary Canadians. More recently, Mr. Harper has increased the overall federal tax burden in each of his last four budgets-taxing everything from hospital parking fees and cosmetic wigs for cancer patients to local credit unions and job creation. Conservative claims about lower taxes for families need a scrupulous reality check. For example, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty says they are “saving the average family of four more than $3,100 a year in tax.”[1] But it all

depends on what type of “family” you’re talking about. You can construct an illustration which would fit the Conservative model--with two parents, two children, a six-figure income and consumer spending of more than $50,000 every year (including over a thousand dollars for art lessons). But for most families--in fact, for 70-percent of Canadian families--this is simply not their reality. The vast majority of middle-class Canadians haven’t seen a significant improvement in their real incomes for the better part of 30 years. But their living costs have gone up and debt-loads have ballooned. For every dollar of disposable income, Canadians are carrying $1.64 in household debt. Many are concerned about affording postsecondary education for their kids, or having no pension plan at their place of employment, or finding decent childcare or long-term care for their parents. Nearly three-quarters of Canadians worry that their children will not do as well as they have done. And then there’s Mr. Harper’s new federal debt burden to take into account. He has run six consecutive deficits so far, adding more than $165-billion to Canada’s overall debtload. That works out to $5,000 in new Conservative debt for every man, woman and child in this country, or $20,000 for every family of four. Any tax cuts claimed by Mr. Harper are paid for with borrowed money. So there is no room to be complacent about the needs of Canada’s middle-class and all those striving so hard just to get there. Goodale was Canada’s Finance Minister from 2003 to 2006.

dents with a stake in a solution. “We care deeply about this city, we care deeply about its future, and we want to make it better and tackle these problems.” The Surrey MLAs said they will be having a

public meeting at an upcoming date to discuss the Surrey Accord and what other issues might be added to it. At the end Q & A answer session was held in which Media raised many issues concerning the city of Surrey.

beat”. “Seven years later and no action from this Conservative government,” said Sims. “They talk about being tough on crime, but talk is cheap.” Surrey’s murder-rate hit a recordbreaking 25 homicides in 2013, including the recent brutal beating death of a hockey mom outside a

Newton arena. Local residents and municipal leaders have called for a more visible police presence to help combat the violence. “Policing is the key to deterring and preventing crime,” noted Sims. “Our growing community needs more resources to keep up-and the federal government should be a partner like they promised to be.” Sims also repeated the NDP call for a National Youth Safety Strategy to prevent crime and develop strong youth leaders by supporting proven local initiatives.

Ban Wasteful Conservative Government Ads

David McGuinty, MP Liberal Party of Canada

The Conservative government claims that it is serious about eliminating wasteful spending, yet it has ramped up the most obvious example: partisan government ads. Everyone has seen them, and that’s not cheap. Just one of their “Economic Action Plan” television commercials can cost up to $95,000 to air. Last year the government spent over $2.5 million to advertise the Canada Jobs Grant, which was never launched. Spending millions of dol-

lars to advertise a program that doesn’t even exist is like flushing tax dollars down the toilet. Over time, all this waste adds up: since coming to office, the Harper government has spent over $600 million on advertising; by 2015 they’re projected to have spent nearly $1 billion. That’s an extraordinary amount of money. Yet some government ads have legitimate goals like promoting public health. So how do we keep the good and cut the bad? The federal government should follow Ontario’s model: its ads are screened before they air by a panel setup by the Auditor General to prevent partisan waste. That model has proven to be a success. That’s why I’ve introduced Bill C-544, the Elimination of Partisan Government Advertising Act, modelled on Ontario’s system. It will have the Auditor General appoint an independent advertising commission to oversee government spending on advertising and pre-screen all ads. No Member of Parliament can look their constituents in the eye and justify the kind of wasteful commercials taxpayers have paid for under the past eight years of Conservative government. Please ask your MP to support Bill C-544. We can all do without more ads for programs that don’t exist.

FACEBOOK, TWITTER FOLLOWERS A MULTI MILLION-DOLLAR BUSINESS Buying connections ‘dilutes the user experience’ Celebrities, businesses and even the U.S. State Department have bought bogus Facebook likes, Twitter followers or YouTube viewers from offshore “click farms,” where workers tap, tap, tap the thumbs up button, view videos or retweet comments to inflate social media numbers. Since Facebook launched almost 10 years ago, users have sought to expand their social networks for financial gain, winning friends, bragging rights and professional clout. And social media companies cite the levels of engagement to tout their value. •Twitter followers available on the open market But an Associated Press examination has found a growing global marketplace for fake clicks, which tech companies struggle to police. Online records, industry studies and interviews show companies are capitalizing on the opportunity to make millions of dollars by duping social media. Going to ‘the dark side’ For as little as a half cent each click, websites hawk everything from LinkedIn connections to make members appear more employable to Soundcloud plays to influence record label interest. “Anytime there’s a monetary value added to clicks, there’s going to be people going to the dark side,” said Mitul Gandhi, CEO of seoClarity, a Des Plaines, Ill., social media marketing firm that weeds out phony online engagements. Italian security researchers and bloggers Andrea Stroppa and Carla De Micheli estimated in 2013 that sales of fake Twitter followers have the potential to bring in $40 million to

$360 million to date, and that fake Facebook activities bring in $200 million a year. For as little as a half cent each click, people can purchase followers. In some parts of the world, $10 can net you 1,000 Twitter followers. (Richard Drew/Associated Press) As a result, many firms, whose values are based on credibility, have entire teams doggedly pursuing the buyers and brokers of fake clicks. But each time they crack down on one, another, more creative scheme emerges. When software engineers wrote computer programs, for example, to generate lucrative fake clicks, tech giants fought back with software that screens out “bot-generated” clicks and began regularly sweeping user accounts. YouTube wiped out billions of music industry video views last December after auditors found some videos apparently had exaggerated numbers of views. Its parent-company, Google, is also constantly battling people who generate fake clicks on their ads. •10 most spectacular social media failures in 2013 And Facebook, whose most recent quarterly report estimated as many as 14.1 million of its 1.18 billion active users are fraudulent accounts, does frequent purges. That’s particularly important for a company that was built on the principle that users are real people. Twitter’s Jim Prosser said there’s no upside. “In the end, their accounts are suspended, they’re out the money and they lose the followers,” he said. LinkedIn spokesman Doug Madey said buying connections “dilutes the member experience,” violates their user agreement and can also prompt account closures. Google and YouTube “take action against bad actors that seek to game our systems,”

said spokeswoman Andrea Faville. Bangladesh click farms Dhaka, Bangladesh, a city of 7 million in South Asia, is an international hub for click farms. The CEO of Dhaka-based social media promotion firm Unique IT World said he has paid workers to manually click on clients’ social media pages, making it harder for Facebook, Google and others to catch them. “Those accounts are not fake, they were genuine,” Shaiful Islam said. A recent check on Facebook showed Dhaka was the most popular city for many, including soccer star Leo Messi, who has 51 million likes; Facebook’s own security page, which has 7.7 million likes; and Google’s Facebook page, which has 15.2 million likes. ‘The businesses buy the Facebook likes because they’re afraid that when people go to their Facebook page and they only see 12 or 15 likes, they’re going to lose potential customers.’- Spokesman for WeSellLikes.com In 2013, the State Department, which has more than 400,000 likes and was recently most popular in Cairo, said it would stop buying Facebook fans after its inspector general criticized the agency for spending $630,000 to boost the numbers. In one case, its fan tally rose from about 10,000 to more than 2.5 million. While the Federal Trade Commission and several state attorney generals have cracked down on fake endorsements or reviews, they have not weighed in on clicks. Meanwhile, hundreds of online businesses sell clicks and social media accounts from around the world. BuyPlusFollowers sells 250 Google+ shares for $12.95. InstagramEngine sells 1,000 followers for $12. AuthenticHits sells 1,000

SoundCloud plays for $9. ‘Illusion of a mass following’ It’s a lucrative business, said the president and CEO of WeSellLikes.com. “The businesses buy the Facebook likes because they’re afraid that when people go to their Facebook page and they only see 12 or 15 likes, they’re going to lose potential customers,” he said. The company official spoke on condition of anonymity, saying he recently moved his company offshore to avoid litigation or cease-and-desist notices. Tony Harris, who does social media marketing for major Hollywood movie firms, said he would love to be able to give his clients massive numbers of Twitter followers and Facebook fans, but buying them from random strangers is not very effective or ethical. “The illusion of a massive following is often just that,” he said. The fake click market has generated another business: auditors. Robert Waller, founder of London-based Status People, helps clients block fakes. “We have had a lot of people who have bought fake accounts, realized it’s a stupid idea and they’re looking for ways to get rid of them,” he said. David Burch, at TubeMogul, a video marketing firm based in Emeryville, Calif., said that buying clicks to promote clients is a grave error. “It’s bad business,” he said, “and if an advertiser ever found out you did that, they’d never do business with you again.”

Travel and Tourism Industry: BAINS TRAVEL BC

From time to time, The Miracle publishes the interviews with Businessmen for our readers. Nowadays, once again the market‚s busiest business sector is Travel and Tourism. Today we exchanged few words with Ms. Dolly Bains of Bains Travel BC. The Miracle (TM): Would you like to tell us your position in Surrey/ Vancouver branch of Bains travel and since when are you in this tourism industry? Ms. Dolly Bains: Bains Travel has been in business since 1951 and at present has 4 locations, in Vancouver, Surrey, Abbotsford and Mississauga. We have a staff of 25 which include leisure, corporate and cruise consultants. I have been managing the finance & marketing department for the past 35 years and have traveled many countries. TM: What do you say about the Canadian currency value decreasing against US dollars, does this affect Canadian tourism industry? Ms. Dolly Bains: As of now there has not been much of an impact but if the CDN dollar continue to fall fares are expected to

rise. For people who know they are planning to travel it is best to buy their tickets early to protect themselves from future price increases. TM: Nowadays we observe that most of the people if they plan to travel, they find online very cheap deals, does this affect on travel agencies businesses? Ms. Dolly Bains: We do compete with a number of online travel agencies we are able to beat or match almost any online price. In addition we provide services that online agencies cannot provide because with us you can talk to a live person and are dealing with a local company. Almost all online agencies have a very small support staff for the number of tickets they do so when customers have a problem it can be difficult to get help. A good example of this are the weather issues that recently occurred in eastern Canada where many people were stranded and could not get help because telephone lines were jammed. We were able to help our clients who booked with us because we have access to airline computer system that allows us to make changes without calling the airline

TM: What are your views about the last minute travel prices. why do prices drop at the last minute? Ms. Dolly Bains: Airlines try to get the maximum price for each seat on the plane but sometimes they miscalculate and the planes are not full so they have no choice but to drop the price. Having said that in recent months airlines have been starting sales very in early in order maximize their profits and so people aren’t waiting until the last minute to book. TM: What areas of travel does your agency specialise in? Ms. Dolly Bains: Specialize in domestic & international airfares. We also do custom tours all over the world. We also have dedicated staff cruises for cruises & packages. Recently we have been given authority by Saudi Arabian government to issue visas for Umrah. TM: What professional and personalized services do you provide for Muslim community for their Umrah trip for holy cities of Mecca Mukarma and Madina Munawara? Ms. Dolly Bains: We provide the entire customized tour for Umrah including air, hotel, transfers and visa services. TM: We know that Bains travel arranges Cruises services worldwide. What are the best times and places to enjoy vacations, do you have any packages and promotions? Ms. Dolly Bains: The first thing about cruises is that people need to book far in advance as cruises sell out early. Right now people are cruising in Mexico & the Carribean. In summer cruising the Mediterranean in Europe and North America including Alaska becomes more popular. TM: What are the biggest challenges of

working in a travel agency? Ms. Dolly Bains: The pace of in the industry continues to get faster every year. We really don’t know what new issues or events that will impact our business. Those events could be our technology, or weather or even a Volcano erupting and have a major impact on our business. TM: How will you continue to expand your business in the future? Ms. Dolly Bains: We have just opened our first location in Ontario with plans for future growth in the East. As well we have just opened our new Umrah division which should fuel growth for the foreseeable future. TM: Do you have any message for our Miracle readers? Ms. Dolly Bains: We would like to thank your readers for their support over the past many years and we will need their continued support in order for Bains Travel to succeed for another 60 years.

Best Example for Youth Today

By: Idris Tawfiq “Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but he is the Messenger of Allah, and the Seal of the Prophets, and Allah has full knowledge of all things.” (Al-Ahzab 33:40) Young people today see a lot of pomp and ceremony when it comes to politicians and leaders. It seems today as though the more authority you have, the more the red carpet is laid out for you, the more special attire and finery you are expected to wear, and the more freedom you have to express your opinions whether they are held up by evidence or not, and no matter how much they may offend others. But let’s take a look at the final Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and see the stark difference between what is now and what was before. “Which one is Muhammad?” So humble was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that strangers looking for him in the mosque in Madinah had to ask this. Sitting in the row of believers for the daily prayers, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), with his simple and modest bearing, could not be distinguished from anyone else. He was so calm, so dignified, and so peaceful that no one could single him out as the leader. Children and youth could approach him to receive a warm greeting or to ask this great, yet humble, man a question or some advice. In quiet prayer he looked like any other simple man. There was no sign here of the great warrior, the skillful negotiator in times of war and peace, the statesman. There was no sign either that this was the man, from among all men, who was chosen to receive the Creator’s final message to mankind. In the mosque his focus was on Allah alone. He was like every Muslim who enters the mosque to pray. And yet, unlike any other Muslim, he had been chosen as the Seal of the Prophets, the most honorable and the noblest of men. He was the one whom Allah selected to guide all mankind. Orphaned by the age of six and born in a relatively unimportant region of the world to a simple family, Muhammad could neither

THE

read nor write. When commanded by the Angel Jibreel to recite the first glorious verses of the Qur’an, Muhammad could only respond that he was unable to read or recite them. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had neither power nor wealth. He possessed none of the things that the world considers important. Yet Allah chose him from all men in the world to be what the Qur’an calls “a mercy to mankind.” This is the role that young Muslims should take on in this world that is so full of turmoil and hate. The youth are the standard-bearers of the message of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and it is a message of mercy. In his person, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was a mercy to all the people on earth. One so kind, so pious, so devout in prayer and obedience to the will of Allah had been chosen as the guide for mankind. We should ask ourselves, how closely are we living our lives according to the message of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). If we are living in his way, no problem will be too great to overcome, our future will appear clear before us, and the challenges of young adulthood will seem small. If young Muslims join in the ranks of the followers of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), they will be joining the ranks of the merciful, pious, and just people through all the ages, from the beginning of time. Indeed, Allah opens the way for those who sincerely obey Him and His Messenger. Good people should surround themselves with good friends. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was surrounded by people who sought the pleasure of Allah. Ask yourself: Who do you mix with and why? Your friends reflect who you are. At the end of his life, when Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was laid to rest in the earth, his funeral was attended by his heartbroken friends and Companions. They had been with him for so long, many since the time of the first revelation of the Qur’an some 23 years before, and now they were to be left alone, without a guide for the first time in so many years. Imagine yourself living at the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); imagine walking in his blessed footsteps. If you follow his Sunnah, you are walking in his footsteps today. His body was not laid to rest in some grand tomb as one might expect for so important and so influential a man. Rather it was placed in the earth beneath the spot where he used to sleep on a simple mat. It fell upon Abu Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him), his friend from before the time of the first revelation, to deliver the funeral sermon. Abu Bakr had to try to make sense out of this tragedy for the crowds assembled before him. At this key moment in the development of Islam, they eagerly awaited what Abu Bakr, the closest friend of the Prophet, would have to say. His

words to them were filled with wisdom. “O men,” he said, “if anyone worships Muhammad, let him know that Muhammad is dead. But if anyone worships Allah, then know that Allah is alive and will never die.” Abu Bakr (Allah be pleased with him) told the Muslim faithful that Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was the greatest man to have lived but he was not the Lord of all creation. He was a man like all men. And this is what makes Islam so extraordinary. There are now at least one and a half billion Muslims in the world, and we are attentive to what our beloved Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said or did. Each one of us proclaims at least five times a day that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah. It is the core of our faith. In the same breath in which we declare belief in the One true Lord of mankind and all that exists, we declare belief in His Messenger. The love and reverence which we have for Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is both real and deep. We see him as the gentlest, the kindest, and the sweetest of men, and yet he remains for us precisely that: a man. Neither a god nor a saint. We do not ascribe to our Prophet magical powers. It would be a blasphemy for us to do so. We see him as a simple man, chosen from among men, with the same cares and worries we might have. But in Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) we see that it is possible for us to dedicate all our lives to Allah and to live under His guidance, yet live in the midst of life. Not divine, but human like us, Prophet Muhammad showed us by his life and example that Islam is the perfect way of life and that it is possible to achieve happiness by following this way. If you find your life is taking you in another

direction, stop and think. Don’t make decisions in your youth that will take you on a different path that heads away from that of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). In Islam there are no priests or popes. That, perhaps, is the secret of Islam. There is no special knowledge reserved for a professional religious class. There are no go-betweens between the Creator and the created. Islam is ours for the taking. How many of us reach out and take what Islam has to offer? How many of us are shining examples of mercy and justice that Islam can develop in us? Each of us can fall prostrate before our Maker and say what we need to say without the help of anyone else. Just you and your creator! We can see this clearly inside any mosque. Muslim men and women, each in their own place, gather in the mosque for the five daily prayers. They pray together as a community, in congregation, receiving blessings for doing so, yet it is obvious to anyone who looks on that each Muslim is concerned with speaking to his or her Lord individually. It is perhaps this, more than anything else, which makes the place of Prophet Muhammad so strong in the heart of every Muslim. Muhammad was a man and he found it possible, with Allah’s help, to live out every requirement of Islam. So you and I, then, can try to do the same and, with Allah’s help, we can live out our faith like our beloved Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Delays in visa processing are unfairly separating families

John McCallum, the Liberal Critic for Citizenship and Immigration, began his national tour consulting with Canadians on the Immigration system. “Last night’s event was a great success,” said Mr. McCallum. “Justin Trudeau appointed me at the Liberal Party’s Citizenship and Immigra-

tion Critic last fall and has given me the mandate to consult with Canadians about what they expect from their immigration system.” The national consultation tour will see Mr. McCallum travel across the country to speak with Canadians and hear firsthand about their experiences with the immigration and

visa system. “What I heard was crystal clear,” continued Mr. McCallum. “Our immigration system is not transparent and is full of delays. Residents of my riding are looking for a system that will respond to the needs of our economy while ensuring that families remain one of our central

focuses.” Delays in visa processing are unfairly separating families during important life events, such as funerals or weddings. These delays also

have a negative effect on the tourism industry. Delays in the family reunification system also mean that families are left wondering if they will ever see their parents and grandparents again. “Day after day, I see cases in my office where families have been unfairly separated by a system that is slow and full of red tape,” concluded Mr. McCallum. “This needs to change. I look forward to hearing fresh ideas from Canadians across this country on how we can do this better.”

Canada falling behind on poverty, inequality: says report Canada isn’t living up to its potential or its reputation when it comes to societal issues like poverty, government and inequality, according to the Conference Board of Canada. The group gave Canada a ‘B’, good for a 7th place ranking out of 17 developed countries, but it said the “middle-of-the-pack” ranking leaves room for improvement. Getting an ‘A’ at the top of the rankings were the Scandinavian nations (Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland) as well as the Netherlands and Austria. At the bottom were Japan and the U.S., both getting a ‘D’ ranking. Income inequality the biggest challenge Inequality was a major factor in Canada’s low ranking, according to the report. Canada ranked a ‘C’ on both income inequality and the gender income gap. Many studies have pointed to the rise of income inequality in Canada over the past 30 years. The top 10 per cent have seen their average income rise 34 per cent, while the bottom 10 per cent have seen their earnings

rise just 11 per cent. The report says income inequality is cause for concern, especially in education. “Better education is a powerful way to achieve growth that benefits all,” writes Brenda Lafleur, the report’s author. But if the cost of education in Canada continues to rise, “it is very hard for the child of poor parents to do well.” However, Canada still maintains a great level of income mobility, ranking ‘A’. Compared to other countries, there isn’t a very strong relationship between a family’s economic background and how much their children can expect to earn. In Canada, just 19 per cent of a family’s disadvantage is passed on, while that is 47 per cent in the U.S. and 50 per cent in the U.K. High poverty rates Linked to inequality is Canada’s high poverty rate, which ranks among the worst of the 17 countries the report looks at. Canada’s child poverty rate is 15.1 per cent, up from 12.8 per cent in the mid-1990s, earn-

ing a ‘C’ ranking – only the U.S. ranked lower. Working-age poverty was 11.1 per cent, up from 9.4 per cent in the late 1990s – the ‘D’ ranking Canada received was the same as the U.S. and Japan. The Conference Board calls Canada’s rate of child poverty “unacceptable,” and says action needs to be taken. “Poor children do not eat well, do not learn well and have low chances of escaping poverty when they grow up,” Lafleur said. The role of government In reducing inequality and poverty, the report finds that the Canadian government has proven quite effective. The study notes that due to the tax system and transfers to the poor, income inequality is 27 per cent lower than it otherwise would be, and without government benefits and taxes, poverty rates would be 23 per cent, compared to the current 12 per cent. However, the political system didn’t get a free pass. Voter turnout and confidence in Parliament were both rated ‘C’.

No ‘kinder, gentler nation’ Lafleur calls the report “myth-busting” of the idea of Canada as a “kinder, gentler nation,” saying that self-image is “based largely on a narrow Canada-U.S. comparison,” and that the U.S. ranked dead last among the 17 countries ranked. The report wasn’t without a few positive marks for Canada – the conference board highlighted acceptance of diversity and life satisfaction as strengths. Crime was also an area in which Canada was given good marks, with lower rates of homicides an. Source: CBC NEWS

Importance of Communication

By: Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor Communication is important in any relationships as it allows us to share interests, aspirations and concerns to support each other. It also helps to organise our lives and make decisions to work together in caring for our partner and children. Good communication is about the way we talk and listen and also about our body language. We can all learn how to improve the way we communicate. No matter how well you know and love each other, you cannot read your partner’s or children’s mind. We need to communicate clearly to avoid misunderstandings that may cause hurt, anger or confusion. •Think about what you want to say and what you are feeling when you say it •Be clear about what you want to communicate is regarding •Be clear about your message so that your partner hears it accurately and understands what you mean •Share positive feelings with your partner or children, such as what you appreciate and admire about them and how important they

are to you. When we communicate, we can say a lot without speaking. Our body posture, tone of voice and the expressions on our face all convey a message. If our feelings don’t fit with our words, it is often the non-verbal communication that gets ‘heard’ and believed. Notice whether your body language reflects what you are saying. Listening is a very important part of effective communication. •A good listener can encourage their partner and children to talk openly and honestly. •Keep comfortable eye contact. •Lean towards your partner or children and make gestures to show interest and concern. •Have a fairly relaxed posture with your arms and legs uncrossed. •Face them – don’t sit or stand sideways. •Sit or stand on the same level to avoid looking up to or down. •Be aware that physical barriers, noise or interruptions will make good communication difficult. •Show genuine attention and interest. Open and clear communication can be learnt. To improve the way you communicate, start by asking simple questions. When you are more aware of how you communicate, you will be able to have more control over what happens. While it may not be easy at first, opening up new areas of communication can lead to a more fulfilling relationship!! Contact at: shabnam@skcounselling.ca

Oxfam warns of dangers of growing inequality The richest 85 individuals in the world hold wealth equal to that owned by the poorest half of the planet’s population, according an Oxfam report. Oxfam’s report, titled Working for the Few, was published ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and urges the group to take measures to reduce growing inequality. “Widening inequality is creating a vicious circle where wealth and power are increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few, leaving the rest of us to fight over crumbs from the top table,” Winnie Byanyima, Oxfam’s executive director, said in a press release. Oxfam claims that since the late ‘70s tax rates for the world’s richest people have fallen in 29 or 30 countries for which details are available. In addition, the wealthy hide about $21 trillion US in unrecorded and offshore accounts out of reach of governments, the report claimed. “Wealthy elites have co-opted political power to rig the rules of the economic game, undermining democracy and creating a world where the 85 richest people own the wealth of half of the world’s population,” Oxfam claimed. It estimates that half the world’s wealth, $110 trillion US is held by just one per cent of the population, while the 85 richest control $1.7 trillion. Among them are Carlos Slim Helu, the Mexi-

can telecommunications mogul, whose family’s net wealth is estimated by Forbes business magazine at $73 billion; Microsoft founder Bill Gates with $67 billion and Warren Buffett with $53.5 billion. The concentration of wealth is leading to increased inequality and pressure on the poor and middle classes that could lead to social unrest, Oxfam said. “This massive concentration of economic resources in the hands of fewer people presents a significant threat to inclusive political and economic systems,” the charity said. “People are increasingly separated by economic and political power, inevitably heightening social tensions and increasing the risk of societal breakdown.” It points to inequality in India, where the number of billionaires increased tenfold in the past decade because of a regressive tax structure, and Africa, where global corporations are exploiting natural resources, while local populations are left poorer. The World Economic Forum, which begins Wednesday, pulls together influential figures in international trade, business, finance and politics has already expressed alarm about growing inequality. Oxfam is calling on the group to support progressive taxation, and to challenge their governments to use tax revenue to provide universal health care, education and social protection for citizens.Source: CBC NEWS

Kitchen Cleaning Tips Who doesn’t want a clean kitchen? There probably aren’t too many homeowners who don’t mind a dirty kitchen. A mess is one thing, but dirt is another. Keeping a clean kitchen is important for health reasons, too, as there are many food-borne illnesses that can be contracted through unclean countertops transferring dangerous germs. Here you will read some kitchen cleaning tips to help enhance your cleaning experience, and maybe even cut down on the time needed to get your kitchen clean. Tip 1: Don’t Mix Cleansers This is always an important point that can’t be overstated. The reason cleansers should not be mixed is because of the potential dangerous combination between ammonia and bleach. Always take caution with chemical-based cleansers. You can avoid this potential hazard altogether by using natural cleaning products. Tip 2: Beware of Sponges Sponges work well for cleaning, but also are a breeding ground for germs. Use your dish sponge only for the dishes and avoid keeping a sponge for wiping down counters. Instead, use paper towel sparingly, or consider using bar cloths or wash cloths to wipe counters. Using cloths is a more economical and environmentally friendly option compared to paper towel use. Simply wash them in hot water with a bit of bleach to ensure they are disinfected. Tip 3: Zap Your Sponges A great way to disinfect your dish sponge is to put it into the microwave for 1 minute. You might also consider keeping a sponge schedule to make sure you change

your sponges in a timely manner. Even if your sponge looks OK it still may be time to replace it. You can wash the sponge in the dishwasher, but it may not remove as many germs as putting it into the microwave. Tip 4: The Toothbrush A toothbrush is a great kitchen cleaning tool. Use it to remove dirt and grime from the faucets and sink. Tip 5: Be Carful with Marble Surfaces Harsher cleansers will damage the surface. Always dry marble to prevent water spots. Marble stains easily, sowipe spills immediately. Do not use vinegar or orange-based cleaners to clean marble. The acid in them will damage the surface. Peroxide is safe for stain removal. Garbage Disposals There are several ways to clean out a garbage disposal. For odor removal, try grinding lemon peel through the disposal. The acid in the peel will also help to clean out the disposal drain. Another tip is to sprinkle a couple of tablespoons of baking soda down the drain, drop in two ice cubes and turn it on. Then run the hot water for a few minutes while the disposal is working. Cleaning the Drain You should give a thorough cleaning to your kitchen sink drain at least twice a year by deodorizing the drain. Pour in 1/2 cup baking soda followed by 1/2 cup white vinegar. Then, plug the drain tightly. Let the mixture sit for five minutes, then flush with boiling water. Do not use this combination after using any commercial drain opener or cleaner.

Microwave Cleaning Tips To clean your microwave oven, mix together 2 Tbsp. of lemon juice or vinegar and 2 cups of water in a 4-cup glass microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for two to three minutes. Carefully remove the bowl and wipe the microwave with paper towels. A super simple way to clean out the microwave (for light spills or dirt) is to boil a glass of water. Let the glass sit in the microwave for a few minutes to allow the steam to set in. After a few minutes, remove the glass with caution (it will be very hot) and simply wipe down the microwave. The steam works really well to remove any dirt. Ovens If you have a spill in the oven and it burns on the oven floor, sprinkle a handful of salt on the mess. The smoke will be reduced and the spill easier to clean after the oven cools. You can add some cinnamon to the salt to help reduce odors. For heavy oven cleaning (if you do not have a

self-cleaning oven), simply make a paste using 3/4 cup of baking soda, 1/4 cup of salt and 1/4 cup of water and spread it throughout the interior (avoid bare metal, and clog any openings with foil first); leave overnight. Remove with a plastic spatula and wipe clean. Refrigerators Try to do a quick wipe of your fridge about twice a month. You’ll be surprised how much it helps to keep the fridge in good shape. To keep a fresh smelling fridge, always keep an open box of baking soda in the fridge. Vent Hoods Wipe the hood’s exterior with hot, soapy water and a soft cloth once a week; rinse with a second hot, damp cloth. If you use your vent hood often, then consider removing the filters once a month to soak them in a solution of hot water and dish washing liquid. Brush them gently with a plastic scrub brush. Rinse and dry well before replacing.

HEALTH

Canadian patients wait longest to see family doctors Canada ranks last among 11 OECD countries in a new survey in terms of how quickly people can get in to see their regular family physicians, showing “where a person lives does matter,” says the Health Council of Canada. The finding was published in the council’s final bulletin, based on data from the 2013 Commonwealth Fund International Health Policy Survey of the General Public. The council, an independent national agency, has been reporting on health-care renewal since its creation in 2003. More than a third of Canadians in a new report said their regular doctor did not seem informed about care they had received in the emergency department, a finding that has not im-

proved since 2004. (Paul Chiasson/ Canadian Press) The report, titled “Where You Live Matters: Canadian views on health care quality,” focuses on differences across the provinces, comparisons among the 11 OECD countries that took part in the survey between March and June 2013, and changes in Canada’s performance over the past decade. “What we find is that Canada is really not keeping pace with a lot of these other countries,” Mark Dobrow, the group’s director of analysis and reporting, said in an interview. “The highest performing province might be looking pretty good in Canada, but be the worst performing if you compared it to all the other countries in the survey.”For

example, 50 per cent of respondents in Ontario said that on the whole, the health-care system works pretty well, compared with 23 per cent in Quebec. The report notes that improvement in reducing wait times has been modest and is often lacking, and concerns Canadians. Only 31 to 46 per cent of Canadians, depending on the province, could get an appointment the same day or the next day, not including emergency department visits. Since patients who don’t have a primary care provider go to the emergency department, the two waits are related, Dobrow said. Brantford, Ont., resident Rich Kinsella said he had trouble finding a family doctor when he moved to

the city 15 months ago. Kinsella said the city east of Hamilton lacks a walk-in clinic and the wait at the emergency department can last six to eight hours. People in the U.S. have quicker access to their family doctors, with 48 per cent of those

polled saying they could get a sameday or next-day appointment, ranking second last among the 11 countries. Germany was listed as first in how quickly residents saw their doctors, at 76 per cent, followed by New Zealand at 72 per cent.

Many Canadians don’t have a regular doctor Dobrow said the report raises important questions about the wide variations among provinces in areas such as access to after-hours care, emergency department wait times, affordability of care, co-ordination among care providers, and uptake of screening programs.”Do we have the rights goals for our system? Are we looking at better health, better care, better value for all Canadians?” he said. In September, the council suggested that provinces pay attention to issues such as leadership, having the right types of policies, and legislation and capacity building. For example, overall resources in primary care could be increased by expanding scopes of practice of some health professionals and improving their interdisciplinary training. At Toronto’s Wellpoint Clinic, the physicians

changed to an “open access” system, meaning patients no longer make appointments weeks in advance. Exceptions include people who need to prebook wheelchair transit services or a physical checkup. “As physicians, we were worried that we would become inundated with patients on a daily basis,” said family physician Dr. Nandini Sathi. “In fact, what’s happened it’s opened up a little bit more time throughout the day for patients who need to be seen.” Previously, a non-urgent patient may have had to wait up to 10 days or sometimes longer if a doctor was on vacation. “Now it really is 48 hours,” Sathi said. More urgent care slots are also available. The other findings in the report include: •Between three per cent and 15 per cent of Canadians, depending on the province, do not

have a regular doctor or clinic. •Accessing medical care after hours without resorting to emergency care is difficult for 62 per cent of Canadians, ranging from 56 per cent in B.C. to 76 per cent in Newfoundland and Labrador. In contrast, the U.K. cut its problem in half over the same time period. •61 per cent of Canadians rate their health as very good or excellent. •36 per cent of Canadians take two or more prescription drugs, among the highest use of prescription drugs of the 11 countries surveyed. •21 per cent of Canadians skipped dental care in the past year due to cost. •37 per cent of Canadians said their regular doctor did not seem informed about care they had received in the emergency department, a finding that has not improved since 2004.

•20 per cent of Canadians hospitalized overnight left without written instructions about what they should do and what symptoms to watch for at home. •Between 23 per cent and 49 per cent of Canadians age 50 or older have never had a test to screen for bowel or colon cancer. “We still use hospital emergency departments for too much of our primary care. And we show largely disappointing performance compared to other high-income countries, some of which have made impressive progress,” the report’s authors concluded. Commenting on the findings, Health Minister Rona Ambrose’s office said, “Our government is delivering the tools the provinces and territories need to deliver health care in their jurisdictions,” and reduce health wait times.

PAKISTAN

Equality Exercise Drives Pakistani Nation towards Modernism

By Tariq M Javed, Toronto There are advantages and disadvantages in the exercise of ‘equality right,’ which is constitutionally available to each member of society. The problem is the illiterate people in majority, who happen to be unaware of their legal rights under the 1973 Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. It would be worth mentioning here that right after the military coup on October 12, 1999, General Pervez Musharraf reassured the Pakistani nation that his was not an obscurantist (religious) agenda, and he referred to the “Ataa Turk model” as his inspiration in his mission to rescue the sinking country out of deep trouble. He meant guaranteeing the EQUALITY with MODERNISM to all citizens across the country. Around that horrible period of official paralysis and mismanagement, the corrupt democratic governments of PPP and the PML (n) mishandled the ongoing ‘governance crisis.’ Ironically, they were back and forth into power democratically as well as through the legal recourse from the apex court level. Though it’s discomforting to mention, yet the reality was none of the two governments were able to prevent the economic decline. In 1999, the national exchequer had almost bottomed out with no hope of any ‘topping up,’ despite the Nawaz Campaign of“dollar mangaao qarz mukaao scheme.” The incentive-package was attractive enough to have lured some hard earned dollars of the Pakistani expatriates abroad. Even, this didn’t work to rectify the menace. So the severe economic derailment turned into chronic financial ailment to a point where all the dollar deposits went missing without a trace unfortunately. And, this actually led to a huge build up of financial mess in the 1990s. Hence, main blame goes to the immature people of that period who were clinging onto power despite their incompetence and the inherent inability to deliver to the nation in terms of EQUALITY. In 2014, we are still going through the worst form of the economic scenario with even harsher ground reality. With mega inflation,

the poverty way below the poverty line, the terrible energy crisis and the fear of terrorism 24/7 are the worries that are responsible for jeopardizing the right to equality. Nevertheless, modernism is still intact, rather it’s on the rise. Thanks to the enlightened moderation which has curtailed and dented our religious rights of equality. Proxy war against Islam and Pakistan is an ongoing phenomenon with no end soon in sight. Unless the whole nation is on the single page to protect the writ of State and secure our practice of Deen, the right of equality will be further deteriorated. Though, the military dictator seemed to have adopted the modern ‘secular’ & liberal credentials,’ yet his notion of ‘EnlightenedModeration’ did adulterate the social and religious norms of the Pakistani society. The said enlightened moderation is here to stay as the internet access is there to facilitate the youth; that’s how, the practice of his concept has almost turned into a reality. On top of that, the young minds are getting ruined by the sexually explicit material which is just a click or so away, hand held devices including the mobile phones which are out of parental control. This is a type of “Remote Control EQUALITY’ which is aimed at nothing but corrupting the civil society as a whole. Indeed, with this paradigm shift, several sociological changes in the country are taking place. A strategic shift in ideological positioning within the women’s movement has been noticed along with debate over religion and secularism in relation to women’s political participation. However, there are understandings and contradictions of “Islamic & secular identity politics” in the women’s movement. Like the most of other nations, the Constitution of Pakistan is based on the concept of equality to all its citizens without discrimination. Based on the required age and other prerequisites, the document on constitution of Pakistan (dastoor-e-Pakistan) offers all citizens: (a) an equal opportunity, (b) right to live in any part of the country, (c) have a profession of their choice. The grown up adults have the rights to contest elections and select the leaders of their choice. Unfortunately, when it comes to politics, there is too much violation of the document. The equal rights are smashed by the power hungry powerful elite. There is a lot of rigging and ballot stuffing. Especially, the village and the tribe culture directly hit the document of ‘Dastoor-e-Pakistan’ and the voters’ rights of voting are either stolen or their votes are cast not by the rascals of the vested interests. This means, these votes are taken care of by the interested rogues/ agents of the candidates. So the pressure

tactics work against the right to equality.

In the real sense, the concept of equality is good for development of a sense of respect among citizens. Employee-employer environment: As the equality is beneficial for all, it’s vital. Yet there are organizations that fail to avoid discriminating on the basis of caste, color, race and gender in a number of cases. This attitude is injurious to the concept of equality; hence becomes a painful reality suddenly. On the other hand, if the employees are allowed to enjoy equal opportunities, they have sufficient alternatives for contributing towards the growth of the organization. They are more than willing to work for maximizing their potential, thus leading to the targeted growth of the company they work for. Mental Satisfaction helps deliver immensely: The feel of ‘being fundamentally equal’ brings a lot of satisfaction and pleasure among the work force. Furthermore, equality leads to morality and justice, translating into an easy access of services where workers are able to fulfill their potentials without any fear or apprehension. Thus, the exercise and practice of equality will be providing fair behavior to all while identifying that everyone is different. The problem is our employers/organizations are hardly working on the basis of equality. They are not very good at providing equal opportunities to their employees indiscriminately. Thus, the dream, of an equal and fair access to a variety of jobs, training and promotion, has not come true as yet.

Positive fact: Despite, the difference of opinion among various quarters of Pakistani society, there is no bar on women being in the workforce including the educational institutions and even in various business sectors. Isn’t that great? Of course it is. WOW! The female pilots (commercial or military), the women legislators, female doctors, female engineers, female judges, female lawyers, female professors, female teachers, female IT specialist, female police officers, and the female members of the armed forces and the list is unending. Pakistan even had a female prime minister. So the women of today are far more liberated than the previous generations. The constitutional rights of women are becoming easier and easier to exercise day by day. Compatibility and competition: In fact, it’s competition which is name of the game. Most of the credit goes to the constitution of Pakistan whereby the rights of all individuals and institutions are guaranteed, yet one has to deserve but prior to desire. Let’s be qualified enough to reap the benefits of guaranteed equality regardless of class. Conclusion: A society that is blind to gender, race and sexual orientation, color, creed and the ethnic background will always choose the best person that is the most competent for the political office or for employment in any industry in the private or public sector without discrimination. Equality goes hand in hand with modernism. And, those who don’t go with the flow are always left behind.

Canadians warned to Draft proposal to revamp exercise ‘high degree of ICC structure could hit a snag caution’ in Sochi

Amid heightened security concerns and growing threats of attack by militant groups, the Canadian government is asking tourists visiting Sochi for the upcoming Olympic Games to exercise a “high degree of caution.” The government issued a travel advisory on its website on Tuesday, warning tourists to take extra security precautions when travelling to Sochi, particularly when taking public transportation and attending events with large crowds. “Avoid demonstrations, monitor local developments and follow the advice of local authorities,” the advisory noted. “You should make your travel arrangements, including accommodation, transportation and purchase of sporting events tickets, well in advance using genuine and reliable sources.” The government noted that while Russian officials have announced special security arrangements near major airports, border crossings and Olympic venues, there are specific regions in Russia that tourists should avoid. Canada has issued a regional travel advisory to the volatile Northern Caucasus region of the country, the same area where two bombs exploded near the city of Volgograd in December, killing 34 people. The website notes that the ability of the Canadian embassy in Moscow to provide assistance to Canadians travelling to that area is “limited or non-existent.” The RCMP has said that it has been working with Russian officials in the planning and protection of Canadian athletes in Sochi, but there has been no word from Canadian officials as to how the government plans on protecting tourists in the event of an attack. Minster of Public Safety Stephen Blaney

told CTV News in an email on Tuesday that while he could not comment on potential security plans, the safety of Canadian tourists remains the government’s top priority. “We have a plan in place to ensure our athletes are secure. I can’t comment on operational matters related to national security, but I can assure you that the safety of Canadians is paramount,” he said. The Canadian government has set-up a registration page on its website and is asking citizens travelling to Russia to register with the Canadian embassy in Moscow so that they may receive travel alerts and consular services in the event of an attack. Canada is also sending a team of consular experts to Sochi for the duration of the Games to help provide assistance to Canadians in distress. The advisory comes as countries around the world continue to express concern over security measures at the Sochi Olympic Games. On Tuesday, Russian officials announced that they were on the hunt for three potential female suicide bombers, one of whom is a widow of an Islamist militant killed by Russian security forces and is believed to be at large in Sochi. Police were seen handing out leaflets near businesses and hotels around the city with pictures of the three women, who are said to be trained “to perpetrate acts of terrorism.” News of the female bombers comes just two days after a pair of Russian militants from the Islamist group Vilayat Dagestan posted an online video warning Russia of future attacks and promising a “surprise package” for tourists attending the Games. The men also claimed responsibility for the twin bombings in Volgograd. Source: CTV News

With Cricket South Africa making public its opposition to the revamp of ICC’s structure, formulated by the triumvirate of BCCI, Cricket Australia and the ECB, there is a possibility of the proposal getting blocked should it come to an early vote at the ICC board meeting on January 29. The proposal, it is understood, was only known to a handful of senior officials from the Big Three who formed part of the “working group” that drafted the document. For it to progress from merely being a proposal or a recommendation - which any individual of the ICC can make - it would need to be approved by a majority during an ICC board meeting. There is a possibility that the draft “position paper” could be treated more than a routine recommendation. Considering that the draft of the F&CA “working group” has far-reaching changes in administrative structures, financial distribution and the creation of an entirely new commercial wing of the ICC, it could require a “special meeting” to pass what the ICC’s constitution refers to as a “special resolution”. To get a special resolution passed, eight out of the 10 Full Members will need to back the proposal according to the ICC Constitution. Article 6.12 a)3)b) in the constitution, which deals with voting on a special resolution, reads: “Resolution proposed at Conference or at a Special Meeting shall be deemed to have been carried as a Special Resolution only if not less than three-quarters of the aggregate number of votes exercisable by all the Full Members shall have been cast in favour of the Resolution, irrespective of whether or not all of the Full Members shall have actually been present in person or by proxy.” Some of the officials from group of seven members, outside the Big Three, ESPNCricinfo spoke to admitted that they were concerned by development. “We have been talking between ourselves. Everyone is disturbed because the draft proposal will have greater repercussions on futures of members’

cricket,” a senior board official from the seven-member group of nations said. His greatest fear was the Australia-England-India triad were getting the majority of the funds while the G-7 were left with nothing much. “You need money to run the sport. They have proposed to make FTP optional. For such decisions you have to have everybody along. They are acting like UN Security Council where the Big Three have veto powers,” the official said. The “position paper”, as the 21-page document was titled, was revealed to the Full Members for the first time during an additional ICC Board meeting to discuss “financial matters” called suddenly on January 9 in Dubai. When the proposal was presented, it not only took the representatives of the rest of the seven Full Members by surprise but also caught unawares the top brass of the ICC, comprising of president Alan Isaac, Mustafa Kamal (vice-president) and Dave Richardson (chief executive). The meeting will be significant because of the immediacy and urgency spelt out in the “position paper” with respect to the formation of the ICC Business Co (IBC) - a new commercial arm of the ICC which will be set up to replace the existing IDI (ICC Development International). The proposal states that the IBC is to be “established immediately” in order to take overall charge of the next cycle of ICC media and sponsorship rights that cover 2015-2023, starting with the task of issuing media rights tenders. The chairman of the ICC’s F&CA committee will also be the chairman of the IBC, appointed through nomination by either the BCCI, Cricket Australia or the ECB. Source: Cricinfo
