GUNMAN OPENS FIRE AT US MILITARY BASE
Chile lies in one of the most earthquake-prone areas of the world. An 8.8 magnitude quake in 2010 killed 525 people and an even larger event in 1960 is thought to be have been the largest quake of the 20th Century.
CHILE 8.2 EARTHQUAKE:
Tsunami spurs evacuation along coast, at least six deaths reported A massive magnitude 8.2 earthquake and tsunami hit the northern coast of Chile, near the port of Iquique, and prompted a warning for the country’s Pacific coast, Chilean officials have said. Interior Minister Rodrigo Penailillo said five people were confirmed dead and attributed the deaths to heart attacks or being crushed.
The first waves hit the coast within 45 minutes of the quake, Chilean officials said, adding that the disaster forced evacuations along Chile’s Pacific coast for fear of a tsunami. The waves generated were 2.11m tall, US officials said. Thousands of buildContinued on pg 4 ings have lost power,

A gunman has opened fire in the Fort Hood US Army base area in central Texas, injuring an unknown number of people, police said, and the base has issued a “shelter in place” order, the Reuters news agency reported. A senior US defense official confirmed on Wednesday that there was an active shooter incident, but gave no further details. The base was the scene of a mass shooting in 2009. The order was sent on Wednesday on the base’s Twitter feed and posted on its Facebook page, the Associated Press news agency reported. The 1st Calvary Division, which is based at Fort Hood, sent a Twitter alert telling people on base to close doors and stay away from windows. Al Jazeera’s Rosalind Jordan, reporting from Washington DC, said there were conflicting reports in the US media on possible numbers of people either dead or injured and on whether there was one gunman or two.”Fort Hood is one of the most heavily populated and used army bases in the US and is known for sending more troops to Iraq than any other US miltary base,” Jordan said. There were chaotic scenes around the base, Jordan added, with multiple helicopters and ambulances at the site. “It is not over by any stretch of the imagination,” she said. Keep doors locked’ Police in the city of Wako, close to Fort Hood, tweeted that people should stay indoors, take shelter and monitor the media.”Authorities are advising those on post to stay away from windows, keep doors closed and locked. Injuries are being reported,” one tweet said. A spokeswoman for the base declined to comment. A spokesman for the local sheriff’s office did not immediately have information on the incident. In the 2009 incident , 13 people were killed and more than 30 wounded in what was the deadliest assault on a domestic US military installation in history.

Govt rejects Musharraf’s petition to strike name off ECL
The government has rejected former military ruler General (retd) Pervez Musharraf’s application seeking removal of his name from the Exit Control List (ECL), DawnNews reported. The Interior Ministry has also formally notified Musharraf in this regard. Sources said the former president will approach the High Court in order to seek removal of his name from the ECL. It is also expected that an application will be submitted in the Sindh High Court. Earlier on Monday, the special court which indicted Musharraf for high treason charges had put the ball in the government’s court in relation to the request put forward by the former president to be allowed to travel abroad. The court had also granted Musharraf exemption from appearing in the case’s hearings saying the accused could be ordered to appear in court whenever required. The decision had said that as long as the accused was not in custody, he could seek medical treatment at any place of his choice, adding that an accused could not be restrained from travelling nor could his/her rights as a human being be curtailed for any reason. However, the court had added that removal of Musharraf’s name from ECL was not the prerogative of the special court as it had not ordered for the inclusion of his name in the list in the first place. The special court constituted to try former military ruler Pervez Musharraf for high treason indicted him on Monday and put the ball in the government’s court in relation to the request put forward by the former president to be allowed to travel abroad, DawnNews reported. The registrar of the special court read out the court’s deci-
sion on the request of the former military dictator to travel abroad in order to meet his ailing mother. The court also granted Musharraf exemption from appearing in the case’s hearings saying the accused could be ordered to appear in court whenever required. The decision said that as long as the accused was not in custody, he could seek medical treatment at any place of his choice, adding that an accused could not be restrained from travelling nor could his/her rights as a human being be curtailed for any reason. However, the court added that removal of Musharraf’s name from ECL was not the prerogative of the special court as it had not ordered for the inclusion of his name in the list in the first place. The hearing of the case was adjourned to April 15. Earlier during the day, the three judge court headed by Justice Faisal Arab of the Sindh High Court read out the indictment against the ex-army strongman, with Musharraf pleading “not guilty” to each of them. Musharraf, who has been absent from most of the tribunal’s hearings owing to security threats and ill health, then turned to address the court. “I honour this court and prosecution, I strongly believe in law I don’t have ego problems, and I have appeared in court 16 times in this year in Karachi, Islamabad and Rawalpindi,” the 70-year-old, who ruled from 1999 to 2008, said. “I am being called a traitor, I have been chief of army staff for nine years and I have served this army for 45 years. I have fought two wars and it is ‘treason’?” The indictment [see full version below] cited imposition of Nov 3, 2007 emergency as one of the charges against Musharraf which led to the violation of Article 6 of the Constitution. It also included the deposition of superior court judges and the suspension of fundamental rights among the list of charges. The charge sheet, which Musharraf signed today, also refers to his oath-taking under the Provisional Constitution Order (PCO). The former military ruler has pleaded not guilty, saying he would stand his ground. (Dawn Newspaper)
Due to prevailing difference of opinion among their ranks, the Pakistani Taliban have not extended a month-long ceasefire but are still open to pursuing peace talks with the government, a spokesman for the insurgent movement said Wednesday. Central spokesman for Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Shahidullah Shahid said some Taliban leaders had objected to extending the ceasefire, which lasted during the month of March. “No decision has been made regarding extension in ceasefire,” he said, adding that a meeting of the central Shura (council) would soon be held on the matter.Shahidullah accused the government of arresting more than 120 TTP militants and not accepting any of their demands during the month-long ceasefire. The TTP and the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif are now involved in their second round of peace talks. A first round failed in February after the Taliban bombed a police bus and executed 23 men kidnapped from a government paramilitary force. The government then refused to hold further talks until the Taliban announced a ceasefire on March 1. Government negotiators were not available Wednesday to comment on whether talks would continue. Taliban negotiators have demanded the government release 800 prisoners they describe as innocent family members and withdraw the army from part
of the semi-autonomous tribal areas along the border with Afghanistan. “We gave this list and names of our civilian prisoners as a test case and wanted to see if the government was serious,” one commander said. “But we felt that the government is either powerless or not serious in talks.” Ibrahim Khan, a Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) leader representing the Taliban in the talks, said they had presented their demands on March 29 but had no answer from the government. He did not know if talks would continue without a ceasefire. Taliban spokesman Shahid accused the government of continuing to kill Taliban during the ceasefire, especially in Karachi, the country’s largest city. Taliban fighters are so prevalent in some neighbourhoods that law enforcement agencies are sometimes reluctant to enter. Taliban commander Omar Khalid Khurasani, from the northern Mohmand region on the other hand said that attacks would begin again in Pakistan. “There would be more attacks in which common people suffer as the government isn’t sincere in peace talks,” he told Reuters. Pakistan was not entirely peaceful during the ceasefire. A militant group calling itself Ahrarul Hind launched a rare attack in Islamabad, killing at least 11 in a court including a judge. The Taliban said they were not responsible for the actions of other militant groups. (Dawn Newspaper)

Palestinian president threatens to go to UN
Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, has signed a request to join several UN agencies in a move that could derail a US push to revive faltering peace talks with Israel. “The Palestinian leadership has unanimously approved a decision to seek membership of 15 UN agencies and international treaties, beginning with the Fourth Geneva Convention,” Abbas said on television on Tuesday after signing the demand during a meeting at his Ramallah headquarters in the West Bank. “The demands [for membership] will be sent immediately” to the relevant agencies, he said. “This is not a move against America, or any other party - it is our right, and we agreed to suspend it for nine months,” said Abbas. Al Jazeera’s Stephanie Dekker, reporting from Jerusalem, said: “Going to the UN means the potential of going for an independent state
and of turning to the International Criminal Court.” “It ups the pressure on the US and on Israel, something they [Palestinians] have always threatened. During the nine months of talks Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said they would not do this. But they were promised nine times the release of this last batch of prisoners.” “Abbas feels he has no other choice. He is in a difficult position among the Palestinians: The settlements have doubled; home demolitions of Palestinians have doubled - and it is difficult for him to justify the talks without seeing results,” said our correspondent. The Palestinians agreed to refrain from seeking membership of international bodies and from pursuing legal action against Israel during the nine months of talks that US Secretary of State John Kerry launched in July. In return, Israel agreed to
release 104 long-serving Palestinian prisoners. But Israel has refused to release the final batch of 26 prisoners, using it as a bargaining chip to try and extend talks beyond their April 29 deadline. The Palestinians have also repeatedly threatened to resume their action through international courts and the UN over Israel’s settlement expansion on occupied territory in the West Bank and in annexed Arab east Jerusalem. Israel on Tuesday reissued tenders for hundreds of settler homes in the east Jerusalem settlement neighbourhood of Gilo, on top of the thousands of new homes it has announced since July. Prior to Abbas’ announcement, Kerry had been due back in the region for a meeting with the Palestinian president on Wednesday, after a whirlwind visit on Monday and Tuesday. Source: Al-Jazeera
Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370: Airlines urge more security checks The disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 underscores the need for improvements in security, both in tracking aircraft and in screening passengers, the International Air Transport Association says. Investigators, meanwhile, were conducting a forensic examination of the final recorded conversation between ground control and the cockpit of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 before it went missing three weeks ago with 239 people on board, the Malaysian government said. The examination could shed light on who was in control of the cockpit and will also seek to determine if there was any stress or tension in the voice of whoever was communicating with ground control — crucial factors in an air disaster investigation. The IATA announced it is creating a task force that will make recommendations by the end of the year on how commercial aircraft can be tracked continuously. “We cannot let another aircraft simply vanish,” said Tony Tyler, the director general of IATA, whose 240 member airlines carry 84 per cent of all passengers and cargo worldwide. Tyler also urged governments to step up the use of passport databases such as the one operated by Interpol to determine if they have been stolen. Most countries including Malaysia don’t run passports through Interpol’s computer system. The
presence of two men on the Malaysia Airlines flight with stolen passports had raised speculation of a possible terrorist link, but it is now thought they were migrants attempting to get to Europe. Nonetheless, their easy access to the flight “rings alarm bells,” Tyler said. Responding to repeated media requests, Malaysia’s government released a transcript of the conversation between the cockpit and air traffic controllers, which showed normal exchanges as the cockpit requested clearance for takeoff, reported it had reached cruising altitude and left Malaysian air space. “Good night Malaysian three-seven-zero,” were the final words received by ground controllers at Kuala Lumpur’s international airport at 1:19 a.m. local time on March 8. On Monday, the government changed its account of the final voice transmission which it had earlier transcribed as “All right, good night.” There was no explanation of why the last words were changed. The conversation was in English, the universal language of aviation. Malaysia has been criticized for its handling of the search, particularly its communications to the media and families of the passengers. In Tuesday’s statement, the government said police and forensic examinations were trying to confirm if the voice in the final conversation belonged to the co-pilot as was earlier
believed. The search area for the plane has shifted as experts analyzed the plane’s limited radar and satellite data, moving from the seas off Vietnam and eventually to several areas west of Australia. The current search zone is a remote 254,000-square kilometre area roughly a 2½-hour flight from Perth. The 11 planes involved in the search Tuesday returned to their base in Perth without any significant sightings, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said. Low clouds, rain and choppy seas hampered the search efforts. One aircraft, a Japanese coast guard plane with high-performance radar and infrared cameras, completed just one of its three planned passes over the search area, then turned back because of the conditions. It descended to just 150 metres above the whitecaps at one point, but the crew members still couldn’t see anything out the windows. Some of the aircraft have occasionally dipped even lower above the sea for brief periods, raising concerns of collisions with ships that are crisscrossing the zone. On Tuesday, Australia deployed an airborne traffic controller to prevent collisions as search planes fly over the Indian Ocean. An Australian air force E-7A Wedgetail equipped with advanced radar made its first operational flight, AMSA said. Angus Houston, who heads the joint agency coordinating
CIA misled public on interrogation program, newspaper reports
The Central Intelligence Agency misled the U.S. government and public for years about aspects of its brutal interrogation program, concealing details about harsh treatment of detainees and other issues, according to a report in the Washington Post. U.S. officials who have seen a Senate Intelligence Committee report on the CIA interrogation program described damning new information about a network of secret detention facilities, also called “black sites,” the Washington Post said. The In-
telligence Committee is responsible for oversight of the CIA. It completed the 6,300-page draft report on the interrogation program more than a year ago but it remains classified. At the “black sites,” prisoners were sometimes subjected to harsh interrogation techniques even when analysts were sure they had no more information to give, said the report, which the Post said was based on interviews with current and former U.S. officials. The files reviewed by committee investigators describe previously undisclosed cases of abuse, including the alleged repeated dunking of a terrorism suspect in tanks of ice water at a detention site in Afghanistan. The method bore similarities to waterboarding but never appeared on any Justice Departmentapproved list of techniques, the Washington Post said. Officials also said that millions of records show that the CIA’s ability to obtain the most valuable intelligence information, including tips that led to the locating and killing of Osama bin Laden in 2011, had little, if anything, to do with “enhanced interrogation techniques”, the newspaper said. A spokesman for the CIA said the agency had not yet seen a final version of the report and was not able to comment, the Washington Post said. Some current and former agency officials have privately described the study as marred by factual errors and misguided conclusions, the newspaper added. In March, Senator Dianne Feinstein, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, accused the CIA of searching computers used by committee staffers compiling the report and she questioned whether the agency had broken the law in doing so. the multinational search effort, said the modified Boeing 737 will monitor the increasingly crowded skies over the remote search zone. Under normal circumstances, ground-based air traffic controllers use radar and other equipment to track all aircraft in their area of reach and direct planes so they are at different altitudes and distances. This enforced separation — vertical and horizontal — prevents collisions. But the planes searching for Flight MH370 are operating over a remote patch of ocean that is hundreds of kilometres from any air traffic controller. Houston, a former Australian defence chief, called the search effort the most challenging one he has ever seen. The starting point for any search is the last known position of the vehicle or aircraft, he said. “In this particular case, the last known position was a long, long way from where the aircraft appears to have gone,” he said. “It’s very complex, it’s very demanding.” “What we really need now is to find debris, wreckage from the aircraft,” he said. “This could drag on for a long time.” Items recovered so far were discovered to be flotsam unrelated to the Malaysian plane. Several orange-coloured objects spotted by plane Sunday turned out to be fishing equipment. Source: CBC News
CHILI :Continued from pg 1 and hundreds of thousands of Chileans are spending the night away from their homes due to the evacuation order, which remains in effect for northern Chile. Chilean President Michelle Bachelet declared parts of northern Chile hit by the earthquake to be disaster zones. Bachelet said she would travel to the regions of Arica and Tarapaca on Wednesday, and send military officials to the areas to prevent looting and disorder. Al Jazeera’s Lucia Newman, reporting from the Chilean capital of Santiago, said that authorities were happy with how an evacuation plan was carried out. “What we’ve been seeing on national TV is people running from the beach,” Newman said. “They’ve been warned about a tsunami. That’s the biggest concern for now.” Newman said the area near the coastline was flat and so there was no way of reaching high ground. “It’s a matter of getting away as far as possible - several kilometres,” she said. The earthquake hit an area that has been rocked by numerous quakes over the past two weeks. Live footage from Chilean television showed scores of cars driving away from the The US Geological Survey said the quake was very shallow, only 10km below the seabed. It was centred 86km northwest of Iquique, Chile’s main mining export port, Reuters said. A tsunami warning was issued for the Pacific coast of Mexico through Central and South America.

NATO suspends ‘all military ties’ with Russia
NATO has said it will suspend “all practical civilian and military cooperation” with Russia because of Moscow’s occupation and annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region. The decision was taken on Tuesday by the military alliance’s foreign ministers in Brussels who urged Russia in a statement “to take immediate steps ... to return to compliance with international law”. NATO and Ukraine announced in a joint statement after their ministers met that they would intensify cooperation and promote defence reforms in Ukraine through training and other programmes. The suspension of military cooperation came as NATO said it had seen no sign that Russia was withdrawing troops from the Ukraine border, according to the alliance’s secretary-general Anders Fogh Rasmussen. “Unfortunately, I cannot confirm that Russia is withdrawing its troops. This is not what we are seeing,” Rasmussen told reporters in Brussels, reported the Reuters news agency. Ministers from the 28 alliance members met for the first time since Russia’s military occupation and annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region triggered the worst East-West crisis since the Cold War. Al Jazeera’s Neave Barker, reporting
from Brussels, said: “The relationship is at its lowest since the formation of the NATO-Russia Council in 2002, formed to boost unity on narcotics control and anti-terrorism technology. “But according to NATO, those joint efforts are now on hold. The message coming from Brussels is that it’s certainly no longer business as usual.” Tension between Ukraine and Moscow has continued, with Russian energy giant Gazprom announcing on Tuesday a more than 40 percent increase in the price of gas exports to Ukraine. Ukraine will now pay a price of $385.5 per 1,000 cubic metres of gas, Gazprom chief executive Alexei Miller said in a statement, raising the price from $268.5 per 1,000 cubic metres which was agreed in December. Diplomats said the ministers in Brussels would consider options ranging from stepped-up military exercises and sending more forces to eastern member states to the permanent bases of alliance forces in those countries - a step Moscow would view as provocative. Asked if NATO could station
forces permanently in the small former Soviet Baltic states, Rasmussen said: “We are now considering all options to enhance our collective defence, including ... further development of our defence plans, enhanced exercises and also appropriate deployments.” Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told reporters as he arrived that he would welcome “some more prominent NATO presence in Poland”. Meanwhile, the European Union has decided to make a swift payment of financial aid to Ukraine,
the bloc’s economy chief Olli Rehn said, dismissing the possibility of economic sanctions against Russia unless it takes more action. Rehn’s comments on Tuesday offered the prospect of quick financial backing from Europe for Ukraine, which is grappling with increased gas prices. The European Union has pledged $15bn (11 billion euros) as part of a package of support with the International Monetary Fund. “It is in the interests of Ukraine and Europe to maintain peace and stability on our continent,” Rehn told journalists on the sidelines of a meeting of European finance ministers in Athens. He said the first payment would be “made swiftly”, according to the Reuters news agency. But while he underscored Brussels’ desire to back Ukraine, he played down the idea of stiffer penalties on Russia following its annexation of the Ukraine’s Crimea. “As regards sanctions, no sensible European would want to see economic sanctions,” he said, adding that none should be necessary if Moscow took no action. “In case Russia would not escalate the crisis, then we should be able to avoid this sanctions,” he said. Stone, could be clear of sea ice in summer within the next few decades, “rather than the end of the century as was previously estimated. . . ” It may be very hard for Arctic communities to adapt, he said. The accelerated rates in permafrost thaw, loss of coastal sea ice and sea level rise are forcing some communities, particularly in Alaska, to relocate, said Stone. “It is an expensive and culturally difficult exercise.” The report says, without ambiguity, that there are risks to the “health and well-being of Arctic residents, resulting from injuries and illness from the changing physical environment, food insecurity, lack of reliable and safe drinking water, and damage to infrastructure, including infrastructure in permafrost regions.” In an emailed statement, Environment Canada said that through the Arctic Council scientists are engaged in “climate change adaptation activities that advance our understanding of the range and extent of impacts of climate change in the Arctic region.” It also said that an online adaptation information portal will be set up to help people there understand
and adapt to climate change. The IPCC report also sheds light on the new reality of property insurance versus extreme weather, especially in North America, where companies have experienced increases in severe weather damage claims in the past couple of decades. (The flooding in southern Alberta in June 2013 was the costliest natural disaster in Canadian history, with $6 billion in losses, according to a January report by Munich Re, the world’s largest reinsurance firm.) Meanwhile, Monday’s IPCC report also warned of decreased crop yields, losses due to forest fires and coastal erosion in North America. “Climate change is more than just an environmental issue,” Ian Bruce, science and policy manager with the David Suzuki Foundation, said. “This is an economic and security issue that will impact everyone from the biggest cities to the smallest towns.” In September, the first part of the IPCC report warned that Canada will continue to see more warming than the global average and extreme weather events will be more frequent and more intense. refugees, most of whom are Somali, to leave urban areas and head to two designated refugee camps. The order followed the deaths of six people in a gun attack on a church service a week ago in the port city of Mombasa. “The government says that’s because some of the people responsible for recent attacks have been refugees,” our correspondent said. “The people of Eastleigh argue they are suffering collective punishment for the actions of a few,” she added. Six people were killed
when assailants burst into the church near the port city of Mombasa and opened fire on worshippers. Kenya has been hit by a series of attacks since sending troops into southern Somalia in October 2011 to battle al-Qaedalinked al-Shabab rebel group. The armed group claimed responsibility for the most deadly attack, in which they laid siege to Nairobi’s upmarket shopping mall Westgate in September, killing at least 67. Source: Al-Jazeera
UN report on climate change rings alarm on warming polar regions
The world is warming up and the impact of climate change is already being seen across the globe, an authoritative new UN climate report says. But in this part of the world, which is barely out of the clutches of a long and wicked winter, the report sounds like a conundrum. Make no mistake, the world is warming up, especially the Arctic, said John Stone, an IPCC lead author and adjunct professor at Carleton University. “What we have experienced this winter is just weather,” said Stone. “It may have been cold in large parts of North
America, but Alaska was unusually warm and Norway and other Scandinavian countries have been abnormally warm, too.” Most of Europe has also had warm weather this year, he added. “When you are looking at climate change, you just cannot look at one region of the world. You’ve got to look at the whole world together and you can’t look at one year, you have to look at the trend.” The past 150 years indicate that climate has changed, he said. The second of three reports by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was released in Japan on Monday. It warns that governments are ill-prepared for a warming world and if action is not taken soon, risks could become unmanageable. The impact and adaptations in polar regions are a big part of the report. Stone, the lead author on the polar regions chapter, pointed out that warming there has already led to a decrease in Arctic sea ice cover and volume. “It is declining faster than any of our models projected,” he said, adding that it suggests “to some of us that climate change may well be accelerating.” The Arctic, said
Kenya arrests hundreds after deadly blasts
Kenyan police have arrested more than 650 suspects a day after six people were killed in bomb attacks in the capital Nairobi, the interior minister said. “This act of cowardice perpetrated against innocent and peaceloving Kenyans who were going about their normal activities is barbaric,” Joseph Ole Lenku said in a statement on Tuesday. “So far 657 suspects have been apprehended,” he added. Kenyan police regularly arrest scores of people after similar attacks in sweeping
security operations, but later release most after questioning. The three blasts on Monday evening targeted two small restaurants and a local clinic in a particularly densely populated area of Eastleigh, an area often known as “Little Mogadishu” because of its predominantly Somali population. No one has claimed responsibility for the blasts. Al Jazeera’s Tania Page, reporting from Nairobi, said the city had grown more tense in the last week after the government ordered all

Education is the Real Power
Experience shows a ‘widespread illiteracy’ leads to a ‘widespread poverty,’ which may be responsible for producing unwanted anti social elements in the vulnerable society. Certainly, the commercialism has added to fuel the fire. Motivated by greed alone, the selfish elite are responsible for damaging the most sacred profession of education beyond easy fix. The self interest has side-lined the real purpose of education which is no other than producing the competent leaders at the end of the day. When the goal is to generate profits and ignore quality, how would the graduates be marketable? Indeed, imparting inappropriate training and education is wastage of time and money. The ongoing business malpractice has cost a lot in terms of wasting the young minds who otherwise can become competent leaders based on their aptitude. Lack of assessing intelligence quotient level (IQ) of the potential candidates is another contributory factor in sub standard education system which leads to generating useless graduates. The existence of commercialized education is the biggest slap on the face of noble profession of Educationists; it has been corrupted as irrelevant education is conveniently sold to the naïve vulnerable public. In other words, the unfortunate ones are lured into valueless education where they are taught subjects that have no practical face value at all. The pain is their skill applicability is a
big concern once these irrelevant graduates come out of schools; they end up with issue of facing joblessness for an extended period of time. There is no easy absorption for them in the working force. Almost one out of ten Canadians does not have a high school diploma, while one in seven has a university degree. In many places, publicly funded high school courses are offered to the adult population. The ratio of high school graduates versus non diploma-holders is changing rapidly, partly due to changes in the labour market that require people to have a high school diploma and, in many cases, a university degree. Canada spends about 5.2% of its GDP on education. Since the adoption of section 23 of the Constitution, education in both English and French has been available in most places across Canada.(http://en.wikipedia.org). It’s also true that “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”– Nelson Mandela And, according to Mr. M.A. Jinnah, “Education doesn’t merely mean academic education. You have to build the character of our future generations which means highest sense of honor, integrity, selfless service to the nation and a sense of responsibility.” Let’s not forget the Muslim scholar of Indo Pak pre-partition days Sir Syed Ahmad Khan did have a vision for the educated Muslims. What he implied was education in this society was not only a demarcation of the wealthy and poor but also of the uneducated and
educated. In fact, he was the one who had originally come up with strong suggestion for the Muslims of the sub continent in particular to acquire the knowledge of English language because of its universality all over the globe beyond any doubt. Of course, the knowledge and mastery of English as foreign language helps compete the world internationally. Generally speaking, education enables the people to manage financial affairs. In exceptional cases, rich people have little education yet continue to succeed in life; they are unique people. Not everyone is able to succeed like those people; many people need education to strengthen their natural abilities. On the contrary, a person who lacks knowledge is considered to be idiot and is regarded as either a learner or an illiterate. And, those who are illiterate are left with no choice but go for labor jobs which do not require understanding, knowledge or development. Those who are uneducated, irrelevantly educated or insufficiently educated are bound to become a source to the needs of the educated. The fact is the educated people do know what’s best for them; they know the difference between right and wrong. And, they know what it means if they are known as educated. And the importance of learning Arts, Science, Mathematics and information technology can’t be ignored, because the absence of relevant education invites poverty.
Some people are born gifted, while others are born with below average learning ability. Whatever it maybe, it’s important to remain focussed to reach your goal of relevant/up to date education. Don’t quit before the target is achieved. It sounds difficult but is not impossible. Contrary to the notion that education closes prison doors as poverty is tackled, there are negative benefits of hi tech education: According to the CBC report, ‘Software known as a “zapper” or phantomware allows businesses to erase or modify sales transaction records in electronic cash registers, which often run on commonly used operating systems like Microsoft Windows. And, there are a lot of other hacking incidences that give headaches locally and globally. Nevertheless, it’s still true that education holds the key to success. The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet after all: A proper education leads to confidence; it optimizes your growth and helps you become independent to begin your own life. It makes you self confident while making decision. In nutshell, education makes you knowledgeable; it makes you stand tall while debating an issue. Let me assure you that the “character build up” of the youth is attainable through providing a unique environment where spirit of team work prevails and interaction between students and teachers is based on tolerance so that new leaders are produced. Let’s go for imparting appropriate training including technical edu-
cation and up to date knowledge. In this regard, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan- (above mentioned) renowned scholar said:”Look forward, learn modern knowledge, and do not waste time in studies of old subjects of no value.” It’s suggested that the public and the government must be vigilant to save the vulnerable society from the sub standard education offered by the vested interests.

Letters & Opinions Where is humanity?
By: Gulshan Aalani ‘Absolutely perplexing, eye opening, shocking, and tragic!’ O, mankind what have you done to this earth? Even after having such high education, wonderful advanced technology, yet nothing is changed. What use is of the education? It is not changing the human desires for illegal/haraam and evil things. Increasing bands of wars, sufferings of mankind mainly women and children, unjust system, religious and financial frauds, double standard of religious leaders and the rulers, flip flop of their
opinions and belief, playing bands of pluralism but preaching enmity and hatred against the rivals, never ending discrimination, segregation, racism, increasing greed of the wealth and ruler-ship, leading to the occupation, land grabbing, imprisoning innocents, gruesome torture, evil rape of young girls, selling girls, Brothels full of girls under 12 yrs, abortions of female child, favouritism of weapons, all evils of Guns and Bombs loved, but most hated Nukes allowed for one but denied for others, all kinds of filthy freedom, and dirty democracy allowed, yet economic crisis,
food pollution by GMO and chemicals, Global warming etc. All such disasters are due to the decline of True belief of One Creator GOD, and opposing HIS ways, leading to the decayed of ethics and moral values. This proves mankind’s efforts for looking for happiness are useless and failure entity. This is called knowledge without wisdom. When will mankind learn and make peace with its Creator and obey HIS rule of Law and reject the law of fake gods who are misguiding by the false hopes of Paradise, who are anti-Holy Scriptures, who can never win

Jamadi ul II 4, 1435H April 4, 2014
F A I T H On the authority of Abu Abdurahmaan Abdullah, the son of Umar ibn Al-Khattab (ra), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (sas) say: “Islam has been built on five [pillars]: testifying that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the Salaah (prayer), paying the Zakah (obligatory charity), making the Hajj (pilgrimage) to the House, and fasting in Ramadan.” (Sahih Bukhari and Muslim).
There Will Come Light! By: Nour Habib In a recent khutbah, I heard Allah’s divine name, Al-Afoo, The Pardoner, and a very touching qudsi hadeeth that exemplified it: A servant [of Allah’s] committed a sin and said: “O Allah! Forgive me my sin “And Allah said: “My servant has committed a sin and acknowledged he has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes them.” Then the man sinned again and said: “O Lord! Forgive me my sin.’ And Allah said: “My servant has committed a sin and acknowledged he has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes them.” Then the man sinned again and said: “O Lord! Forgive me my sin.” And Allah said: “My servant has committed a sin and acknowledged he has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes them. [My slave!] Do what you wish, for I have forgiven you!” (Bukhari and Muslim) This is no free ticket to sin as you please. But it did make me realize we should always have hope that Allah will forgive our sins and guide us to become better Muslims. How many times have we sat down to count our mistakes and recognized we’ve sinned so much we can’t even keep track anymore? We think that there’s no way Allah can forgive us now. To our minds, we don’t even deserve forgiveness. This shows only the extent of Allah’s mercy, which no human mind can even imagine. “And do not despair of Allah’s mercy. For, most surely, none
despairs of Allah’s mercy except the disbelieving people.” [Quran 12:87] Take note. Hope is no luxury to make our lives better. It is a Muslim obligation, part and parcel of faith.
At All Points, Hope Having established that we cannot despair of Allah’s mercy, we need also to understand that despair, in any form, is not acceptable in a Muslim’s life. When life is at its worst, a sinister feeling in the pit of the stomach, growing and spreading and inching its way toward your heart, may threaten to take over. Financial burdens, work woes, and relationship troubles look like the pinnacle of all problems. How will we recover from excessive debt, a layoff, or divorce? The future stares back, bereft of hope, and looks pretty ugly. The temptation to give up grows strong, and bed seems a nice place to lie down for a long time (covers overhead!) thinking about nothing at all. Despair has set in. And its downhill from there--unless something’s done
The Miracle repeats its series of 99 Names of Allah (SWT) &Prophet Mohammad (saw) Names and Meanings. In last edition we printed Al Rahim name of Allah(swt) and Al Bashir Mohammad(saw) name.
quickly to free us from it. So here are some stories to keep that despair at bay.
Chronicles of Hope Among the very best hope narratives is the Quran’s account of Prophet Moses. What could be more distressing than an enemy army hot on your heels with nothing but sea in front of you? “Then when the two multitudes saw each other, Moses’ companions said: ‘Indeed, we are most surely overtaken.’ (Moses) said: ‘No, indeed! Most surely, my Lord is with me! He will guide me!’” [Quran 26:61-62] In the same dramatic straits, most of us would succumb to feelings of utter helplessness. Our hearts would see no purpose in even “the hope” for a way out. Yet all along it was there, with Allah. He told Prophet Moses: Strike the sea with your staff! Thus it split, so that each divide became as a great mountain [Quran 26:63]. Who could have imagined such an escape? We may not always see the exodus from a problem. But Allah does, for He is the One who creates it. Consider also the story of Prophet Yunus (Jo-
nah). Trapped in the belly of the whale in the midst of the sea, he still did not lose hope in Allah’s mercy. He prayed With unfailing constancy. And from him we learn one of the greatest duaa: “There is no God but You! Highly exalted are You! Indeed, I was of the wrongdoers!” [Quran 21:87]. It is because of his hope, and the deep sincerity of his prayer, that Allah saved him. “Yet were it not that he was one who highly exalted [God alone], he would have remained in its belly until the Day all are raised up.” [Quran 37:143-144] What of our own beloved Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam? He walked to the mountain city of at-Taif to bestow them with divine guidance. But its people belied him and ran him out with stones. Allah sent an angel with a question to the Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam. Did he desire to bring at-Taif’s twin mountains down upon it? The Prophet refused. He had hope that one day they or their children would enter into Islam. The prophetic narratives of the Quran tell us something vital. In their bleakest hours, the hope of the prophets held unshakable, for they issued directly from mighty faith. Despair is not a Muslim option. Our own woes will never gather the weight of the prophets’. Nor shall our troubles mount to such heights. In that, let us take due comfort. Think of the nature of night and day. The darkest hour comes just before dawn. So when life looms gloomy, and you feel as though you’re groping in total darkness, know that new light lingers just over the near horizon. Obama and the limits of power! By: John Bell US President Barack Obama is visiting Saudi Arabia on a fence-mending mission after US moves had severely shaken Riyadh’s confidence in its ally. The visit follows declarations by US Secretary of Defence Chuck Hagel in Bahrain last December, and more recent statements by US Secretary of State Kerry that the US remains engaged in the globe and the Middle East. However, his Saudi hosts are wary, concerned and angry by recent vacillations in Washington. These include the expeditious dropping of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, the crossing of a dozen red lines on Syria, the shifts over the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, the decision to negotiate with Iran, and, now, the apparent weakness in the face of Russian President Vladimir Putin. It is a long list, and a look at Kerry’s initiatives in the region may further confirm this view. His diplomatic wrangling over the Israel-Palestine conflict, Syria and Iran is an attempt to create a regional environment that requires the US less. By removing the Iran issue from the danger file, avoiding the war in Syria, and claiming to lessen Israel’s problems in the Middle East, the hope is for less US crisis management or military intervention. The Middle East has never been an easy file: Guaranteeing oil flows and Israel’s security have soaked up large chunks of US diplomatic attention. Today, with the gyrations of the Arab revolutions and the Sunni-Shia schism, it is no wonder that Obama aims to shift away from a region of much trouble and little promise. It’s also clear to all and sundry where the economic action and the US’ next geopolitical rival is: The Pacific beckons loudly for US’ first “Pacific President. The US-China relationship is the most important geopolitical dynamic of the 21st century: two economic behemoths with global ambitions.
The Saudis, and many others, view all this as a dangerous shift. Saudi Prince Turki al-Faisal has said: “While the wolf is eating the sheep, there is no shepherd to come to the rescue of the pack. The US’ indecisiveness in the face of Putin’s bold moves, China’s military buildup, and even Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s bluff scares many. Inside Story - Trouble in US-Saudi relations? Even the Asia pivot has been met with considerable cynicism. Many do not believe it adds up to much: too little to match China’s rising power, but enough to rile Beijing. Obama’s moves are often seen as reticent and ambiguous, a passive mixture of half steps and public relations rather than clear and determined policy. His change of heart over Syria, and his reaction to Russia have resurrected memories of when Nazi Germany annexed certain areas in Czechoslovakia. The Saudis, Japanese, and South Koreans - all US allies - are hedging their bets and becoming more active actors in their own right. Fundamentally, this view believes that, without the US, the law of the jungle is one step away. Despite this battering, Obama’s foreign policy may be worth a second look. He may be involved in a subtle and long-term game that
many are not used to. Unlike his predecessor, he is cognizant of his country’s capacities, and the limits of power. Instead of indulging in adventurism, he may be placing building blocks for the future at home and abroad: slowly out of the Middle East, slowly into the Asia Pacific region. His notorious indecision may be more a decision not to engage; the ambiguities, tactics to manage the resulting barrage of public and private pressures. However, Obama’s new message about limits of power has been given little credence by his rivals so far. Obama is being attacked for being simultaneously too aggressive and too passive. On Russia, he is berated for the sanctions, and for not doing enough. He may be trying to square circles, or imposing limits on a superpower’s actions, a step many had called for desperately during former US President George Bush’s wild adventures. There may also be a silver lining in Obama’s reticence. His actions may be ambiguous but they do not unduly inflame. There may be times to confront dark forces Syria may have been one of them - but, as a rule, that vector is a quagmire, and the world is divided about what deserves attention. If he had acted on Syria, many would have pointed to Palestine, etc. China is certainly watching, and its instincts
may be to confront and replace a weakened US. But cooperation alongside competition may not be an impossible feat for the two giants of the Pacific, and the options are many. Already, the two nations have the US-China Climate Partnership (together they produce 40 percent of global emissions). Can the US help mediate the issue of territorial differences between its allies and China? As unlikely as it may seem, the two, along with Russia, could even read the riot act to Middle Eastern actors, and force them to exit their labyrinth of distrust into a more constructive regional framework. The latter is important because the Middle East has a way of refusing to be ignored, and regularly comes back to haunt all. Crises there may draw the US back to the region. The US’ economy also remains dependent on oil prices, and therefore stability in the Gulf. Frictions arising from Chinese-UScompetition in the Asia-Pacific region could also rebound back to the Middle East. The easiest way to divert US energies is to stir the pot in a region that remains a zone for destructive meddling (a quality that its own nations specialise in). Unfortunately, the Middle East is not going away - but for all the wrong reasons. At the end of the day, the Saudis may well be right, and the US may be asking for trouble by changing its role in the Middle East. The other great powers may have appetites that sneer at the limits to power that Obama advocates. Yet, if the US is to have a hope of contending with China, it has to get its house in order, and adventures in the Middle East will only weaken it. In the future, both China and the USA must avoid its seductive spiral. The best way to ensure this is to set their common house in order in the Pacific. In the meantime, time will tell whether Obama’s approach to power is a wise balm, or simply naive illusion in the face of our darker natures. John Bell is Director of the Middle East Programme at the Toledo International Centre for Peace in Madrid. Source: Al Jazeera

A Seniors Program held at Masjid Al-Salaam Bby On March 30, The BC Muslim Association Burnaby-New Westminster-Tri-Cities branch & ladies branch presented a ‘Seniors Program’ at Masjid Al-Salaam & Education Centre in Burnaby. This was a social and educational event for 55 years old and above community members. Mr. Daud Ismail conducted and highlighted this forum presentations and discussions including Burial and Funeral services, Honouring our elders, and the Seniors Future. Br. Shawkat Hasan did the opening with recitation of Qur’an and followed it with presentation on what the BCMA Social Service planning for the future for seniors. He said that that BCMA is currently busy with the Surrey school project and as soon as this is over the attention will be focussed on social services. The community would feel those services to the seniors with multi benefits included: 1 - Caring Home where brothers and sisters can receive Halal food and proper Islamic services. 2 - Women Shelter for our destitute daughters with their children can find peaceful and safe home to stay until matters are settled or resolved. 3 - Volunteer services where Muslim seniors find someone who knock on the door to offer shopping and medical services. 4 - Housing project, we witness many other communities have been cashing from the Provincial Government grants for housing projects. It is a prime time for us to step forward and ask the Government for similar services for our people. We have been conveying to the Muslim World that we are the Ambassadors of Islam in this part of the world and we have been making head ways on this track hoping to get some benefits soon. Funeral service is getting very expensive and BCMA hopes to reduce the cost for those families who cannot afford it. The responsibility of BCMA to bridge the needs of such services is too costly and hope to improve it.
Br. Mohammad Usman gave the details history of BCMA funeral services, and mentioned how difficult itself to bury a Muslim in Lower mainland before 1976 and that time the grave price was $141 in Occasion View Burnaby. He has a record of these services and soon he will compile and publish it. He said we need to improve more and easy and affordable this services for our seniors. Br. Imad Ali explained how the community members get benefits these services easily and they can visit all information on our BCMA website and see the Funeral services and get the form and book the grave in advance at Vedder View Gardens in Chilliwack, because in White Rock and Burnaby it is already filled and booked. You can also see the procedure from any person death to his burial. The B.C. Muslim Association provides facilities for Ghusl at the Richmond Jamea Masjid, Surrey Jamea Masjid and Burnaby Masjid ul Salaam. There is a volunteer BCMA Men and Women Ghusl Committee who will assist the family in performing the ghusl under the supervision of a licensed funeral director. Br.Sikandar Khan talked on children and parent issues and requested all male and female seniors, that they will move forward and send their submission for any amendment in BCMA’s 50 years old Constitution. BCMA is working on that and no lips service only, they will consider your suggestions. Br. Daud Ismail and other BCMA directors and Trustees explored the role of seniors within the next BCMA constitution. They also summarised the Future financial protection and planning for senior citizens and setting a platform for future events where the BCMA can honour the contribution of their seniors and to ensure their dignity with pride. At the end delicious lunch was served by Burnaby Women chapter.

The Patient Old Man When passing through a mountain pass, a bedouin (villager) once came across an old man who was blind and who seemed to be afflicted with various ailments all over his body. It was clear that he was wasting away. He was even paralyzed and was constantly forced to remain in a seated position. The Bedouin could clearly hear him say, “All praise is for Allah, Who has kept me safe from ailments with which He has tested many among His creation; and He has indeed preferred me over many among those that He created.” “My brother!” exclaimed the bedouin.
“What have you been saved from? By Allah, I think that you have been afflicted with every single kind of ailment!” “Go away from me,” said the old man, as he raised his head. “Do I not still have a tongue with which I can pronounce His Oneness, and with which I can remember Him every single moment? And do I not still have a heart with which I can know Him?” These words of the old man were enough for the bedouin to repent to Allah for his sins and ask Him for forgiveness. Remember, there is always someone else who is in more problem than you.

20 LIFESTYLE Self-Perception vs Self-Definition Jamadi ul II 4, 1435H April 4, 2014
By Don Neviaser If during a variety of interactions the responses from others seem to be more negative than the messages you intended to convey, or if you sometimes feel others just don’t like you for some reason, perhaps it’s time to consider the source. Is it possible your messages and actions are not being accurately received because of your delivery? Is there perhaps something in your emotional background adding a more debasing lean to your perceptions of how others see you, and if so, might you be reacting toward them in line with these false perceptions? It can be difficult to plug into a variety of interactions when one’s true self and relative value are shrouded by self-doubt and uncertainty. When self-perceptions are rife with selfloathing and disappointment, it can be hard for some to imagine others may actually see them in a more positive
light. With such an inclusive mindset, it is not uncommon to project these same negative perceptions onto the perceptions of others resulting in varying degrees of defensive posturing; the resulting unwarranted agitation is then picked up on and reacted to by others accordingly. Ironically, negative reactions to a reaction based on false pretenses tend to simply verify and justify one’s original negative interpretations that were projected onto others in the first place. Sadly, interactions such as these damage or destroy a variety of personal and professional relationships completely unnecessarily! Regardless of why certain negative perceptions exist, ultimately they come down to a matter of perspective, and as such, can be affectively controlled or curtailed by countermeasures designed to shift focus, belief and perception. Ironically, particularly resilient negative perceptions
are actually outstanding examples of how certain perspectives can affect and influence one’s life; a reality that can be equally utilized for life-views of a more positive nature! It would therefore make sense to counter them by incorporating the same recipe of assumption, attitude and perspective that brought them to life to begin with; powerful factors in how we see ourselves, our life and others. It is helpful to honestly and openly attempt a realistic, relative view of how one fits into the world and affects others. Perhaps try taking a step back and seeing one’s self, and interactions with others, from an unbiased third party perspective to, if anything, help illuminate outward messaging such as body language. Ultimately, one must attempt to adhere and assimilate to one’s true self so as to think, feel and act from center with inner confidence and faith. An extremely effective way of doing this
is to make a distinction between selfperception and self-definition. Selfperception is based more on an idea and can be impacted or defeated by habit, self-doubt or old negative messages. Self-definition, on the other hand, is a specific, definitive state of being in thought, feeling, action and reaction that draws from one’s true, unique inner-self and incorporates specific needs, desires, talents and abilities that allow one to rise above confining comfort zones and diminishing perspectives. Start by taking a realistic personal inventory of your assets, whatever they may be, and don’t be afraid to honestly and openly ask those close to you for help. Once done, define and combine all these factors and create a visualization of this new you and the future you desire. Make specific notes that confirm, support and encourage this new mindset, including ample positive affirmations, and read them daily! Also take some time to genuinely consider this newly defined persona in a variety of personal or professional situations, the more
uncomfortable the better, and imagine what his or her thoughts, feelings, reactions and end results would be; taking care not to think or react as who you are now, but as who you ultimately want to be. The next step is to choose a day and time when you will stand up and make a definitive conscious decision to just “be” who you really are, with an eye on who you WILL be in the future! Believe that change is possible for you and that you are worthy of being happy and enjoying life! Then simply start thinking, feeling, acting and reacting in line with this persona. The power of perspective and a healthy appreciation for life can literally make all the difference between living and existing, happiness and despair or success and failure. The sooner this change of personal perspective begins, the sooner you can start walking your true life path in line with who you really are! “The brighter you see the light in you, the brighter others will see it too.”
When The Good You Do Doesn’t Do You Any Good By: Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor Women are traditionally trained to place other’s needs first...... What could possibly be wrong with doing good? We want to please others, and we please ourselves when we feel to do so, that’s maybe! When we do both the same time, there’s twice the bonus. We’ve done it for as long as we can remember. The concept is based on the following logic: If I can make other people happy, then they will like me. If they like me, I must be good enough. If I’m good enough, they’ll keep me around, I’ll be safe and secure, and
that’s all I need to be happy. The happier I can make others, the happier and therefore the safer I will be. The only problem is, it doesn’t work that way. Till which extend are you prepared to please everyone? Make no mistake. There’s nothing wrong with pleasing others - unless, of course, it becomes all-encompassing. True giving is a part of making any relationship work, but it’s not the only part - particularly if you’re doing all the giving and they’re doing all the taking. That is not a balanced relationship! This malady starts with an ernest attempt to make someone else happy, but it can quickly become a pattern of behavior with a far-reaching consequences. You may not like the end result later on and that might be too late. Now the truth is, this mostly affects women! Women have evolved to be relationship driven, and they seek out social

situations as opportunities to relate to others. In ancient days, almost every task required communication, coordination and cooperation. In other words, a network of relationships supported every task. Evolution has virtually assured that women on the other will be caregivers. The better women were at these skills, the more value and status they realized within their families and their social circle. Nowadays women are playing various roles in the Society and instead of playing a Pleaser Role, do something even small that you are confident and proud of! Dr. Danielle Martin gives Washington a lesson on Canadian Health Care
Toronto doctor touts benefits of Canada’s system in Washington As the debate about Obamacare rages on in the United States, a Toronto doctor calmly defended her country’s health-care system before a partisan U.S. Senate committee in Washington this week and explained that the single-payer model is not to blame for wait times — and that Prime Minister Stephen Harper is not a socialist. Dr. Danielle Martin, a family physician who is also vice-president of medical affairs and health system solutions at Women’s College Hospital, was the Canadian voice on an international panel at a committee studying what the U.S. can learn from other countries. “I do not presume to claim today that the Canadian system is perfect or that we do not face significant challenges,” Martin told the committee on Tuesday. “The evidence is clear that those challenges do not stem from the singlepayer nature of our system. Quite the contrary.” Martin outlined the benefits of Canada’s health-care structure and contrasted it with the American one, while noting the strong public support in Canada for the idea that access to care shouldn’t depend on one’s ability to pay. “We do not have uninsured residents. We do not have different qualities of insurance depending on a person’s employment. We do not have an industry working to try to carve out different niches of the risk pool. This is a very important accomplishment and as we
watch the debate unfold as to how to address the challenges you face, we are reminded daily of its significance,” said Martin. Martin, who also holds a degree in public policy and is an assistant professor at the University of Toronto, said a lot of work is being done on reducing wait times in Canada. Moving away from a single-payer system and introducing more private health care is not a solution and would likely exacerbate wait times in the public system by drawing health-care resources away from it, she told the senators. Conflicting views on Canada Sitting next to Martin was another Canadian, Sally Pipes, who is now an American citizen and leads a think-tank in San Francisco that advocates for the free market. Pipes gave a decidedly different view of Canada’s health-care system.“If you’re looking for lessons from health-care systems abroad, Canada shows us exactly what not to do,” she told the senators, citing wait times and government control as major problems. “I think this is no way for us to run a health-care system, a single-payer system.” She cited former Newfoundland and Labrador premier Danny Williams as an example of one of the thousands of Canadians who have paid for care in the United States. He underwent a heart valve surgery in the U.S. in 2010. Pipes also said her mother died of colon cancer because she had to wait too long for a colonoscopy. Martin faced some tough questions
about Canada’s system from Republican Senator Richard Burr, who opposes the Affordable Care Act, more popularly known as Obamacare, that overhauled the American system.“On average, how many Canadian patients on a waiting list die each year, do you know?” he pressed her. “I don’t sir, but I know there are 45,000 in America who die waiting because they don’t have insurance at all,” Martin shot back. What about Williams going to Florida for surgery, he asked her, what does that signify? Martin noted that the doctors who pioneered the surgery he had done actually work in Toronto. “Sometimes people have a perception, and I believe this is fuelled in part by media discourse, that going where you pay more for something that that necessarily makes it better. But that’s not borne out by the evidence on outcomes from that cardiac surgery or any other,” she responded. Hearing included some political theatre “Is your prime minister a socialist?” Sanders asked Martin. “No sir, our prime minister is quite conservative.” “So obviously as a conservative he wants to implement the American health-care system that the Canadians are very aware of, I gather that is the first thing he did when he took power is that right?” “Not exactly.” “Why not?”
“Support for single-payer Medicare in Canada goes across all political stripes,” Martin explained. Reflecting on her appearance at the committee in an interview on Thursday, Martin said she was honoured to be asked to testify. She said some of the panellists were definitely on the defensive and that she was not there to be an apologist for Canada’s system. “I tried very hard to be resolute in not painting the Canadian system as being without challenges or without problems, but still maintaining that I think there are some pretty significant learnings about how health care can be better administered that Canada has to offer — if the American administration were really truly interested in learning from it,” she said. Canada also learns from the U.S., she said, and there shouldn’t necessarily be a debate about which system is better. Canada is “not a threat” to the American system, Martin said. Though the committee meeting was partisan at times, she said it is a positive sign that the U.S. is looking at international examples. ‘It’s a good thing that they did that, even if it was in part a bit of political theatre.”
Marriage is healthy for the heart: Study Being married makes for a healthy heart, while being divorced or widowed is linked to higher rates of cardiovascular disease, according to a study of 3.5 million people released on Friday. The study is the largest of its kind to show how heart health is linked to marital status, and was presented at the American College of Cardiology conference.“These findings certainly shouldn’t drive people to get married, but it’s important to know that decisions regarding who one is with, why, and why not may have important implications for vascular health,” said lead author Carlos Alviar, cardiology fellow at New York University Langone Medical Center. People who were divorced had a higher likelihood of any vascular disease, abdominal aortic aneurysm, coronary artery disease and cerebrovascular disease when
compared to single people, according to the study. Widowers showed slightly higher odds of any vascular disease and coronary artery disease, also when compared to people who had never been married.“The study demonstrates that other risk factors, such as smoking and obesity, hypertension, diabetes and being sedentary also increases with being divorced or widowed, said Suzanne Steinbaum, director, women and heart disease, at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.“As married people are more likely to help each other stay healthy, by making sure their spouse eats well, exercises, takes medications and helps in attending doctor’s appointments, married people tend to have less risk for heart disease,” added Steinbaum, who was not involved in the study. Researchers were surprised to see that the health association was strongest
in people under age 50.“The association between marriage and a lower likelihood of vascular disease is stronger among younger subjects, which we didn’t anticipate,” Alviar
said. In this group, marriage was linked to a 12 percent lower odds of any heart or artery disease. Among those aged 51 to 60 there were seven percent lower odds of heart dis-
Archaeologists discover earliest example of human with cancer British archaeologists have found what they say is the world’s oldest complete example of a human being with metastatic cancer and hope it will offer new clues about the now common and often fatal disease. Researchers from Durham University and the British Museum discovered the evidence of tumors that had developed and spread throughout the body in a 3,000-year-old skeleton found in a tomb in modern Sudan in 2013. Analyzing the skeleton using radiography and a scanning electron microscope, they managed to get clear imaging of lesions on the bones which showed the cancer had spread to cause tumors on the collar bones, shoulder blades, upper arms, vertebrae, ribs, pelvis and
thigh bones. “Insights gained from archaeological human remains like these can really help us to understand the evolution and history of modern diseases,” said Michaela Binder, a Durham PhD student who led the research and excavated and examined the skeleton. “Our analysis showed that the shape of the small lesions on the bones can only have been caused by a soft tissue cancer ... though the exact origin is impossible to determine through the bones alone.” Despite being one of the world’s leading causes of death today, cancer is virtually absent in archaeological records compared to other diseases — and that has given rise to the idea that cancers are mainly attributable to modern
lifestyles and to people living for longer. According to the World Health Organization’s cancer research agency, new cancer cases rose to an estimated 14 million a year in 2012, a figure seen rising to 22 million within the 20 years. Yet these new findings, published in the Public Library of Science journal PLOS ONE on Monday, suggest cancer is not only a modern disease, but was around in the Nile Valley even in ancient times. Binder said the discovery should help scientists explore the underlying causes of cancer in ancient populations and give fresh clues about the evolution of cancer in the past. Ancient DNA analysis of skeletons and mummies with evidence of cancer can be used to
ease, and four percent among those 61 and older. The patients in the study came from a US database of 3.5 million people who paid $100 to be part of a screening program. Participants came from all 50 states from 2003 to 2008.Since those involved were paid participants, they might not represent the general population, study authors noted. Also, there were low numbers of minorities included. And while the study found that marriage made for a healthier heart, one thing the research could not measure was the health of the marriages.“Of course, it’s true that not all marriages are created equal, but we would expect the size of this study population to account for variations in good and bad marriages,” Alviar said. Perhaps further research could shed light on how changing life events impact heart disease, he added.
detect mutations in specific genes that are known to be associated with particular types of cancer. The skeleton is of an adult male estimated to be between 25- and 35-years-old when he died. It was found at the archaeological site of Amara West in northern Sudan, on the Nile, 750 km downstream from the capital Khartoum. The researchers said they could only speculate on what may have caused of the young man’s cancer, but it may have been as a result of environmental carcinogens such as smoke from wood fires, or due to genetic factors, or from an infectious disease such as schistosomiasis, which is caused by parasites. Schistosomiasis would be a plausible explanation, they said, since the disease has plagued inhabitants of Egypt and Nubia since at least 1500 BC and is now recognized as a cause of bladder cancer and breast cancer in men. Hafeez apologises for Pakistan performance
Mohammad Hafeez was asked pretty direct questions after Pakistan failed to make the World T20 semi-finals with a heavy defeat to West Indies. He was asked if he was considering resigning as T20 captain and if he was the No. 3 batsman the side needed. He was asked why Kamran Akmal and Shoaib Malik were persevered with. He was asked if the Pakistan team management was good enough. In reply, Hafeez apologized to the people of Pakistan for his team’s unsuccessful campaign and said that the entire team was collectively responsible. “After a loss, such things come up,” Hafeez said. “But you have to keep in mind that no team wins because of any one individual or loses because of any one individual. It was a good display overall, but in this match, we didn’t play well. We take collective responsibility. It’s not one person’s responsibility. The entire management, all the players, are equally responsible. “The management has worked hard with the players. All the plans, they were able to reach the players, gave us all the practice. At the end of the day, the players have to
deliver, they have to execute the plans. In this tournament, especially in this match, if the execution wasn’t good, then the responsibility lies with the players, not the management. But as a team, we didn’t do well. All of us have to accept it. “I apologise to the people of Pakistan as captain and on behalf of the team that we couldn’t live up to their expectations. But these things happen in cricket. You are the same person who plays good and bad cricket. But it is important that you take the good things going forward and maintain that.” There were few good things for Pakistan against West Indies. They gave away too many runs at the death, lost too many early wickets, and could not get going in the chase at all. Hafeez said his batsmen’s shot selection had been wrong. “The plans were in place but once the pressure got on to them, our best bowlers Saeed Ajmal and Umar Gul didn’t do the basics right. They leaked too many runs towards the end. We didn’t get the momentum in our favour. “We played some of the shots which were not there and losing too many wickets in the first six overs really cost the game. The
batsmen have to take the responsibility. There was never any one innings that came forward. When the momentum is not with you, you get to see this kind of cricket where even good teams can collapse.” Hafeez had a disappointing World T20 personally as well, making 55 runs from four innings at a strike-rate of 72.36. While admitting that he could not perform in this tournament, Hafeez felt that overall, he had done alright in the position. “From the last one and a half years, I have been doing this for the team, playing at No. 3 because the management want me to do this and I have been doing very well at this. Unfortunately, in this tournament, I couldn’t get the runs I wanted to. It happens sometimes in cricket - you try your level best but things don’t work for you. This is one such tournament. I am disappointed with my own form, I couldn’t score runs for the team. You have to accept it, you have to move forward from here.” When asked if moving forward meant dropping those who had not performed, Hafeez said that was the domain of the selectors. “Good and bad, you must take them to-
FIFA chief medical officer: no re-vote over Qatar 2022 World Cup
FIFA’s medical chief Michel D’Hooghe has said he is convinced there will not be a re-vote for the Qatar 2022 World Cup. D’Hooghe, who was one of the FIFA executive committee members who took part in the votes for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups in December 2010, believes there was no corruption involved in the bidding. There have been numerous allegations about the bidding process for the tournaments, which is the subject of an investigation by FIFA’s ethics chief Michael Garcia. But D’Hooghe told the Evening Standard: “There will be absolutely no re-vote. Some in the English press want that. But it’s not the English press that decide.” Asked whether corruption
might have been involved, D’Hooghe, from Belgium, added: “Absolutely not. I had no feeling anything was going on then and I still have no feeling that there was corruption during this vote.” D’Hooghe led the unsuccessful joint Belgium/Holland bid for 2018 – though it fared better than England’s – and claimed people in FIFA felt the ongoing criticism of the world governing body was “sour grapes” despite the recent reforms it had brought in. He said: “But, for the British press, whatever we do is never enough. And the feeling in FIFA is that all this British criticism is partly sour grapes. In football you win and you lose. If England feel they have not had a World Cup
since 1966, then Belgium has never had the World Cup. England must not complain. They just had the Olympics and organised it fantastically.” D’Hooghe did, however, reiterate his belief that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar cannot be played in the heat of summer – the heat was pointed out as a potentially seriously problem by the technical inspectors who reported on the bid. He added: “In my capacity as chairman of the medical committee, I said the same – that in Qatar, we have to avoid the warmest period of the year. That essentially means June, July and August. I have never changed my opinion from the very beginning.” D’Hooghe also revealed he has met Garcia and believes that
gether and look to the future. The selectors will look at it, they will see who are the players that need to be replaced. That is their job. The team is selected by the selection committee, but the responsibility is not any one individual’s. If the players haven’t played well, then they must take the responsibility.” Malik and Akmal had a poor World T20 as well, making 52 and 48 runs respectively in four innings each. Hafeez acknowledged that they had fallen short of expectations. “They will also be sad. The selectors have trusted and picked them for a big tournament like this. But they didn’t live up to those expectations. They are good players, they have played well for Pakistan but you are right, in this tournament there were not good performances from them. But Kamran’s keeping is a positive. He has kept well, there have always been question marks over his keeping. Unfortunately, as an opener, he didn’t bat as well. As for Shoaib Malik, he is a senior player, both haven’t done very well.” Source: Cricinfo the US attorney should be allowed to proceed with his investigation despite a small number of FIFA members being unhappy about his involvement. He said: “It was only after the (executive committee) meeting that I heard that some people were not prepared to accept Garcia. It is very clear. We, the executive committee, had proposed to congress to establish an ethical committee and I would not consider taking that responsibility away from Mr. Garcia. “This guy takes his work very seriously. I am very impressed with him and really support him. Mr. Garcia plans to interview all the FIFA executive committee who participated in the vote and are still on the executive. “I had a very good talk with him and a chance to tell him what I knew of the elections. I had, of course, nothing to hide.” Source: The Guardian
