The Exciting PSL Final at Gaddafi Stadium

There is a great excitement about the final on March the 5th, when Spectators from all over Pakistan are expected to arrive at the Gaddafi stadium. Due to 2009 terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, the international cricketers are hesitant to travel to Lahore. This means Pakistan’s cricketing isolation was due to security lapse in the past. Pakistan has been suffering the pain, both financially and in the development of its cricket team. Now, the PSL (Pakistan Super League) officials and the government are on the same page, hence taking no chances. Furthermore, the PSL authorities have worked out on an alternative arrangement through creating a pool of the willing cricketers. Furthermore, foreign players are being offered incentive payments ranging from $10,000 to $50,000. This time, the security arrangements made for the final are super excellent meaning players are to be given the highest level of security. The cricket fans are required to present valid CNICs in order to be allowed entry to the stadium under the tough supervision of police and military personnel. Problem is there is a proxy war going on against Pakistan by the hired militants who carry out terrorism merely for disturbing the Pak’s rapid economic growth. The foreign funded terrorists (outsiders and insiders) have the ugliest job to do - that includes isolating Pakistan at the international level. Due to security concerns as men-

tioned above, playing the PSL final in Pakistan seemed out of question initially, however, a timely response by the authorities in Pakistan has sent a positive signal to the World showing Pakistan is fully functional and is fully secured for foreigners to come over at their free will without any fear whatsoever to play or make other investment. Though “Operation Zarb e Azb” had done a great job of eliminating the menace, the current “Operation radd-ul-fasaad” has taken over to destroy the remainder. This has ensured the safe environment to foreign dignitaries who are already in the country. At least, India failed to isolate Pakistan from the rest of the World. With regard to current final, Chairman Shaharyar Khan of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) mentioned earlier that despite the recent terror attacks in Lahore, the PCB was eager to hold the high-profile Pakistan Super League (PSL) final in the provincial capital. Also, Najam Sethi said PSL final was being hosted in Lahore as per the desires of the people. This means more trouble as the excessively pre-occupied police of Lahore now faces a more difficult challenge to maintain safety and security for the visiting players, the spectators and all others in and around the immediate vicinity. Fact is the PCB has a chance to generate revenues only if the tournament goes well without any mishap. Chairman Shehryar Khan is of the view that the PSL final in Lahore has not only opened the doors for

international teams to Pakistan but it is also a good opportunity to unite the nation. Sethi maintains that the wish of the people was conveyed to the government, and the government in turn did ensure proper arrangements for the PSL final. Thank God, there is a five-tier security planned for PSL final participants. “A successful final in Lahore will definitely send a positive message to all that the security situation in Pakistan is getting better,” the chairman said.... Hopefully, a trouble free final will deliver a huge boost to cricketing in the country. Certainly, it will restore country’s lost image again. Since the recent spate of terrorism in the country has triggered a wave of chaos and anxiety, the government has taken right steps to protect the public. And, the decision to hold the PSL final as scheduled is the right message to the international community at the right time meaning Pakistan is open for business. Good to know is the State-machinery is fully functional for providing a fool proof security. Another advantage: A successfully concluded PSL final would be facilitating in creating space for other cultural and sporting events. Beyond doubt, Pakistan as a developing nation is progressing rapidly, and the economic environment in the region would enhance in the days ahead. Players willing to play in Pakistan: There was an initial list containing 54 names; this has now grown to above 60 and is said to be composed of those who were

not picked in the draft last October as well as additional names from outside the draft are added. Tickets are expensive, so only people who can afford are expected to watch in person, the rest of the nation will still be watching on TV. Recommended: 1. The government by all means is welcome to make the needed arrangements to enhance security, but paralyzing the area would be a major trouble for the general public. 2. The international players deserve to feel fully safe when playing in Lahore. 3. Surely, a fool proof security will guarantee future games and foreign business. 4. A curfew-like security arrangement in the provincial metropolis is going to send confusing message. 5. Hosting the PSL final in Lahore is a step in the right direction; it would be helpful in reviving international cricket in Pakistan. 6. This mega event must go ahead as planned because it shows clearly that Pakistanis are united against terrorism. Sources: dawn.com, thenews.com. pk, nation.com.pk

ISCC and MAT Strongly Condemn Terrorists Attacks on a Islamic Shrine in Pakistan The Islamic Supreme Council of Canada (ISCC) and Muslims Against Terrorism (MAT) strongly condemn today’s terrorists attacks at the holy Shrine of a famous Sufi Saint, Hazrat Usman Marwandi Lal Shahbaz Qalandar(RA) in the city of Sehwan, Sindh, Pakistan. In these terrorist attacks more than 75 people were killed and hundreds were wounded including women and children. “It is so sad that the Canadian and Western media reported the shrine of Hazrat Usman Marwandi - Lal Shahbaz Qalandar(RA) a Shia shrine which is attacked by Sunnis. This is far from the truth.”, said Imam Syed Soharwardy today. In fact, Hazrat Usman Marwandi Lal Shahbaz Qalandar(RA) was a Sunni scholar and Saint of Islam. He was one of the disciples of famous founder of Soharwardy Sufi order Hazrat Shaikh Shahabuddin Umar Soharwardy (RA). The shrine is visited by both Shia and Sunni Muslims. ISCC and MAT requests the media to report correctly and honestly. The attacks on both Sunni and Shia

mosques and shrines are carried out by the extremists of Salafi/Wahabi/ Deobandi sects. It’s not the issue of Shia or Sunni. The culprits are neither Shia nor Sunni. They follow and practice the Saudi version of Islam’s interpretation called Wahabism which is widely supported and funded by the United States and other Western governments. Taliban, Al Qaedah, ISIS, Boko Haram, etc. all are the followers of the same sects. ISCC and MAT will be holding a Fateha service for the victims of Sehwan, Peshawar and Lahore attacks.

Three years in pain and still no date for surgery for Osoyoos’ Lee Horn

The wife of an Osoyoos man languishing in pain for nearly three years has come to Victoria to try to speed up the process of getting his hip replaced. Lee Horn waited nearly two years just for diagnostics to pinpoint the reason for his pain, and has been waiting for surgery for 538 days since he was told his hip needed to be replaced. His wife Gaye brought his story to the legislature Monday. “We know that under Christy Clark’s government, B.C. has the second worst wait lists for both hip and knee replacements,” said New Democrat health spokesperson Judy Darcy, who raised the issue in Question Period. “But Lee puts a human face to those troubling statistics. “It’s unconscionable that the health

care system has left Lee in debilitating pain for more than three years.” Lee and his wife Gaye had a photo tour operation in the south Okanagan, but Lee’s physical pain has left him unable to perform tasks that used to be routine. “I want my husband back,” says Gaye, plainly. “Imagine being a former college football player sitting inside watching his wife with two bad knees shoveling the driveway. That’s what waiting for health care looks like.” “What’s most galling is that the government ran a pilot project in Richmond that actually reduced waits for hip and knee replacements by 75 per cent, but they discontinued funding for it,” said Darcy. “The result is stories about people like Lee; people whose lives are disrupted and who are left in terrible pain waiting for surgeries. “The Christy Clark government simply isn’t working for patients like Lee.”

Liberals Need to Fix the Phoenix Pay Fiasco:

By:MP Alupa Clarke, and Deputy Critic, MP Kelly McCauley, Official Opposition Critic for Public Services and Procurement, today released the following statement calling on the Minister of Public Services and Procurement, the Hon. Judy Foote, to commit to a concrete plan to address the tax issues facing tens of thousands of Canadians: “It’s now been one year since the start of the Liberal Phoenix pay fiasco and employees are still not being paid. This

situation is unacceptable and needs to be resolved immediately, however the Liberals still do not seem to have a concrete plan. “Meanwhile, information obtained through access to information requests clearly shows that the current Liberal government failed to complete the necessary requirements prior to rolling out the first phase of the transition. This includes addressing concerns that if the previous backlog was not cleared, employees could be affected by erroneous and irregular pay. In addition, two separate departmental reports confirmed that the pay centres were fully staffed, but that individual departments had not completed the necessary training to proceed with the transition. These were all clear warnings that the Minister chose to ignore. “New cases and problems with the system emerge every day and yet the Minister of Public Services and Procurement’s response continues to be ‘call the pay centre’ and ‘check the CRA website’, an empty directive when no one can get through the lines. No employee should be forced to sell their home, postpone their education, or go into debt because they are not being paid what they are rightly owed. “The Minister of Public Services and Procurement needs to stop blaming others and start actually fixing the problems with Phoenix. She also needs to confirm that there will be no negative impacts on employees’ tax returns and no clawbacks of the benefits they need to live.”

Google honours Pakistan’s ‘Angel of Mercy’

Abdul Sattar Edhi founded the world’s largest volunteer ambulance network in Pakistan, the Edhi Foundation. Unlike wealthy individuals that fund charities in their names, Edhi dedicated his life to the poor from the age of 20, when he himself was penniless in Karachi. The reach of Edhi’s foundation grew internationally, and in 2005 the organisation raised $100,000 in aid relief for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Edhi was born before partition in Bantva, Gujarat, India on February 28, 1928. He died last year in Karachi of renal failure. He was offered treatment abroad, but insisted on being treated in a government hospital at home. The Edhi Foundation’s slogan is: “Live and help live”. Monday would have been his 89th birthday. In his honour, Google changed its logo in the United States; Iceland; Portugal; Australia; New Zealand; Japan; Estonia; the UK; Denmark; Ireland and Pakistan to a doodle, or illustration, of Edhi. Google hailed Edhi’s “super-efficient” ambulance service. “In celebration of Abdul Sattar Edhi, let’s all lend a hand to someone in need today,” it said. The technology giant’s team has created more than 2,000 doodles for homepages around the world. Among those recently celebrated are Pramoedya Ananta Toer, Fred Korematsu and Edmonia Lewis. “The doodle selection process aims to celebrate interesting events and anniversaries that reflect Google’s personality and love for innovation,” the company says. With more than 1,800 ambulances stationed across Pakistan, the Edhi Foundation is Pakistan’s largest welfare organisation. In 1997, the foundation entered the GuinnessWorld Records as the “largest volunteer ambulance organisation”. If you

call 115 in the South Asian nation, the Edhi Foundation will answer. In his words, at the start of his work, Edhi “begged for donations” and “people gave”. This allowed him to convert a tiny room into a medical dispensary. He also bought an ambulance that he himself drove around. Raising more donations and enlisting medical students as volunteers, his humanitarian reach expanded across the country. Today the Edhi Foundation runs outpatient hospitals, a child adoption centre and rescue boats. It also helps in the burials of unidentified bodies. There are cradles for “unwanted babies” outside Edhi emergency centres. Throughout his life, Edhi emphasised the humanitarian, rather than religious, motivation for his work. His foundation receives “zakat” (Islamic charity) donations, which he used to help Muslims, Christians and Hindus. Asked why he helped non-Muslims, he said: “Because my ambulance is more Muslim than you.” He also famously lamented: “People have become educated ... but have yet to become human.” When he died, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said: “Edhi was the real manifestation of love for those who are socially vulnerable, impoverished, helpless and poor. We have lost a great servant of humanity.” Throughout his life and after he died, many questioned why Edhi never received the Nobel Peace Prize. After the nominations in 2014, the hashtag #NobelPrizeforEdhi was created; many said he should have been recognised instead of Malala Yousafzai, who is also from Pakistan. In an interview with the Express Tribunenewspaper, Edhi said: “I don’t care about it. The Nobel Prize doesn’t mean anything to me. I want these people, I want humanity.” In that same interview, he recalled an incident that he would never forget. “There was a woman who committed suicide by jumping into the sea along with her six children,” he said. “I was really saddened while giving them ‘ghusal’ (Islamic washing ritual after death) as part of the funeral rituals.” According to Pakistan’s Nation newspaper, the State Bank of Pakistan will next month issue a commemorative coin of Rs50 in memory of Edhi.

The Senate’s Stand¬ing Committee on Planning and Deve¬lopment expressed fears on Tuesday that the China-Pakistan Economic Corri¬dor (CPEC) could build or ruin Pak¬is¬tan and its future if the country’s interests were not safeguarded and watched. The committee urged the government to have everything in black and white with Chinese to avoid any misunderstanding between the two brotherly countries in future and form a panel of international and local experts to handle all aspects of the CPEC in a professional manner. It observed that the government had so far failed to determine what benefits Pakistan would get when business and trade activities started on the CPEC. “Everything should be very clear from day one so that Pakistan and its people get maximum benefits from the over $50 billion corridor project,” Se¬¬na¬¬te Standing Committee on Planning and Development Chairman retired Col Syed Tahir Hussain Mashhadi told Dawn after its meeting. He said that the government should watch interests of Pakistan in the CPEC instead

of putting everything in the lap of China “China is our brother, but business is business,” he said. The chairman said that China was Pakistan’s brotherly country and thus all misunderstandings should be addressed. “Due to misunderstanding and ambiguity in the CPEC contracts China has moved courts about three different power projects,” he said. He said the committee had met six times in the past, but the government had failed to tell the committee about any agreement between Pakistan and China to protect the interests of Pakistan. Mr Mashhadi said that all relevant institutions must take the parliamentary committee on board while awarding CPEC-related contracts so that transparency and merit could be ensured. He said that the CPEC should not become a deal like the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation supplies under which huge lorries and tankers supplying goods to Nato forces in Afghanistan used Pakistan’s national highways and roads and ruined them, but the country got nothing in return for the damage they caused. “Thousands of vehicles will cross the CPEC and there must be an agreement as to who will bear the roads and highways maintenance cost,” the committee’s chief said. “It should also be made very clear as to who would get job opportunities in CPECrelated projects. Would Pakistani labourers and youth get jobs or mostly Chinese people would be engaged and get jobs in CPEC-related projects?” Mr Mashhadi asked. The committee was informed that only Chinese industrialists would be allowed to set up their industries in the proposed economic zones along the corridor. “Then where will be the benefit for Pakistan. Will the Chinese give us some share in their profit or pay taxes?” the chairman asked. He said the government had failed to apprise the committee whether Pakistanis would be in the loop or

out of it. The chief of Jamaat-i-Islami, Sirajul Haq, endorsed the point of view of Mr Mashhadi and expressed similar fears regarding benefits for Pakistan in the CPEC. The committee also expressed fears of a clash of culture between locals and Chinese as there would be a Chinatown in every city. Another important aspect which came to the knowledge of members of the committee was that China would provide loans and grants for only three to four per cent of the entire investment in the CPEC. “We were informed that Chinese banks will charge us more interest than any other international bank,” he said. Earlier, the secretary of planning and development informed the committee that China would set up a power project of 300MW in Gwadar at a cost of $360 million besides constructing the Gwadar International Airport at a cost of $230 million. Saudi Arabia wants oil prices to rise to $60 in 2017

Saudi Arabia wants crude oil prices to rise to around $60 a barrel this year, five sources from OPEC countries and the oil industry said. This is the level the OPEC heavyweight and its Gulf allies - the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar - believe would encourage investment in new fields but not lead to a jump in US shale output, the sources told Reuters news agency. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, Russia and other producers pledged last year to cut production by about 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd) from January 1. The first cut in eight years is intended to boost prices and get rid of a supply glut. Crude prices have risen by more than 14 percent since the November pact but are still only

trading around $56 a barrel despite record compliance by OPEC and non-OPEC members. OPEC officials have repeatedly said the group does not target a specific oil price and their focus is on drawing global oil inventories and helping the market to re-balance. But behind closed doors, Riyadh and its Gulf OPEC allies hope to see a higher level because the low price has pressured their finances and stoked fears of a future supply shortage. However, they do not want the price to be so high that it encourages rival US shale producers, which were hard hit by the slump in oil prices, to ramp up production again. Advances in technology have made it easier for them to adapt quickly to oil price fluctuations. More than $1 trillion worth of oil projects have been cancelled or delayed since mid-2014. A decline in investments in future oil projects triggered worries that this could lead to a supply shortage and spike in oil prices. Oil fields take around four years to develop before production can start, whereas US shale oil can now be extracted within a few months of a decision. “In general, something around $60 this year is good; $60 will not encourage that big increase in shale,” one OPEC source told Reuters news agency, adding that shale oil production is expected to grow by about 300,000 bpd this year. President Donald Trump is proposing a huge $54 billion surge in U.S. military spending for new aircraft, ships and fighters in his first federal budget while slashing big chunks from domestic programs and foreign aid to make the government “do more with less.” The Trump blueprint, due in more detail next month, would fulfil the Republican president’s campaign pledge to boost Pentagon spending while targeting the budgets of other federal agencies. The “topline” figures emerged Monday, one day before Trump’s first address to a joint session of Congress, an opportunity to reemphasize the economic issues that were a centerpiece of his White House run. Domestic programs and foreign aid would as a whole absorb a 10 per cent, $54 billion cut from currently projected levels — cuts that would match the military increase. The cuts would be felt far more deeply by programs and agencies targeted by Trump and his fellow Republicans, like the Environmental Protection Agency as well as foreign aid. Veterans’ programs would be exempted, as would border security, additional law enforcement functions and some other areas. “We’re going to start spending on infrastructure big. It’s not like we have a choice — our highways, our bridges are unsafe, our tunnels,” the president told a group of governors at the White House on Monday. He added, “We’re going to do more with less and make the government lean and accountable to the people.” However, Trump’s final version of the budget is sure to leave large deficits intact — or even add to them if he follows through on his campaign promise for a huge tax cut. His plan faces strong opposition from Democrats, who possess the power to block it. The immediate reaction from Republicans was mixed, with prominent defence hawks like Sen. John McCain of Arizona saying it would do too little to help the Pentagon and fiscal conservatives and supporters of domestic agencies expressing caution. The White House indicated that the foreign aid cuts would be

particularly large. Asked about those plans, top Senate Republican Mitch McConnell of Kentucky would say only, “We’ll see how it works out.” A congressional showdown is inevitable later this year, and a government shutdown a real possibility. White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney said the spike in Pentagon spending would bring the total defence budget to a record $603 billion — and that’s before including tens of billions of dollars for overseas military operations. The United States already spends more on defence than the next seven countries combined, but military leaders have complained repeatedly that aircraft are aging. Congress was told recently that the average age of Air Force aircraft is 27 years, and more than half of the service’s inventory would qualify for antique vehicle license plates in Virginia. “It is a true America first budget. It will show the president is keeping his promises and will do exactly what he said he was going to do,” Mulvaney said. “It prioritizes rebuilding our military, including restoring our nuclear capabilities, protecting the nation and securing the border, enforcing the laws currently on the books, taking care of vets and increasing school choice.” The border wall would cost $2.9 billion in 2018, according to draft documents for the Department of Homeland Security, which assume the agency would hire 500 new members of the Border Patrol and 1,000 new Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents next ear. Detention beds for apprehended immigrants would receive $2 billion over current-year spending. The Transportation Security Administration ticket fee would increase by $1 to $6.60 for each one-way flight. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York said, “It is clear from this budget blueprint that President Trump fully intends to break his promises to working families by taking a meat axe to programs that benefit the middle class.” Mulvaney said the plan wouldn’t add to the budget deficit — currently projected to hit about $500 bil-

Big surge for military in Trump budget, big cuts elsewhere

Kansas man charged with killing Indian in possible hate crime

A white U.S. Navy veteran has been charged with killing an engineer from India and wounding two other men when he opened fire in a Kansas bar in what federal authorities were investigating on Friday as a possible hate crime that shocked the victim’s home country. The shooting on Wednesday night led news bulletins in India and triggered outrage on social media, where people voiced concern that U.S. President Donald Trump’s “America First” position on immigration and jobs has fueled a climate of intolerance. White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Friday that any loss of life was tragic, but it would be absurd to link the killing to Trump’s rhetoric. Pratik Mathur, spokesman for the Indian embassy in Washington, said India had expressed “our deep concern over the incident” to the U.S. government and requested a “thorough and speedy investigation.” Adam Purinton, 51, was charged on Thursday in Johnson County, Kansas, with one count of premeditated first-degree murder and two counts of attempted premeditated first-degree murder, District Attorney Stephen Howe told reporters. He declined to elaborate on the details of the incident or the gunman’s motive. Local media reports said Purinton often complained about his ill health and was mourning the death of his father. The Federal Bureau of Investigation was looking at whether it was a hate crime, the official term for crimes motivated by bias or prejudice. If convicted of the state murder charges, Purinton faces a life sentence without eligibility for parole for 50 years, Howe said. Purinton is accused of killing Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32, and wounding Alok Madasani, also 32, in Austins Bar and Grill in Olathe, Kansas, on Wednesday evening, police said. At least one bystander told the Kansas City Star the gunman shouted “get out of my country” before shooting the Indian victims. Purinton is also accused of wounding American Ian Grillot, 24, who was shot as he tried to intervene. “People call me a hero,” Grillot said in a video released by the hospital where he was undergoing treatment for gunshot wounds to the hand and chest. “I was just doing what anyone should have done for any other human being.” Kuchibhotla was married but had no children. His wife, identified by media as Sunayana Dumala, told reporters on Friday that the gunman “has taken a life, a very lovable soul, from everyone.” Kuchibhotla received a master’s in electronics from the University of Texas in El Paso in 2007, according to LinkedIn. His Facebook page, where he called himself “Srinu,” said that in 2014 he joined the Kansas office of Switzerland-based navigation device maker Garmin Ltd from Rockwell Collins Inc. Flags at Garmin’s offices flew at half-staff

on Friday. The company said it was “devastated by the senseless tragedy.” Dozens of people attended a candle-light vigil Friday evening at the First Baptist Church of Olathe, across the road from the bar. Hundreds of thousands of dollars has been raised through crowdfunding sites for the three victims. The suspect fled on foot and was arrested five hours after the shooting at an Applebee’s restaurant in Clinton, Missouri. He reportedly told an employee there he needed a place to hide because he had killed two Middle Eastern men, the Star reported. Purinton, a former Federal Aviation Administration employee, was transferred back to Kansas on Friday and was being held with bond set at $2 million, according to jail records. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday. It was not immediately known whether he had hired a lawyer. “I don’t want people to think of him as a monster or racist man because that’s not who he is,” Adele Mathews, Purinton’s niece, said in a statement released to local media. Police did not say whether Purinton has faced charges in the past. However, he was not generally known to police in Olathe, a city of 134,000 people about 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Kansas City, Sergeant Logan Bonney said Friday. At Kuchibhotla’s family home near the Indian tech hub of Hyderabad, relatives backed government calls to ensure the safety of Indians living in the United States. “The government should voice out this strongly because our brothers, sisters and our relatives are there,” the victim’s brother, Venu Madhav, told Reuters Television. Many Indians initially welcomed Trump’s election, seeing his calls to restrict Muslim immigration as support for their Hindu-majority country. India has been at odds for decades with Pakistan, its mainly Muslim neighbor. But the Trump administration may also have skilled Indian workers like Kuchibhotla in mind as it considers curbing the H-1B visa program, worrying both India’s $150 billion IT services industry and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

lion next year — but it wouldn’t reduce it, either. The administration again made clear that the government’s largest benefit programs, Social Security and Medicare, would be exempt from cuts when Trump’s full budget submission is released in May. GOP Rep. Mike Simpson of Idaho, a member of the Appropriations Committee, said the large cuts Trump envisions making to domestic programs won’t fly. “There’s a lot of members that have a lot of interest in a lot of these programs,” Simpson said. “There’s more to our government than just defence.” But McCain said Trump’s Pentagon plans would fall short by almost $40 billion and represent just a small increase over former President Barack Obama’s recent Pentagon wish list. “With a world on fire, America cannot secure peace through

strength with just 3 per cent more than President Obama’s budget,” said McCain, chairman of the Armed Services Committee. On Monday, tentative proposals for the 2018 budget year that begins Oct. 1 were being sent to federal agencies, which will have a chance to propose changes. Before the new budget year, there’s an April 28 deadline to finish up spending bills for the current 2017 budget year, which is almost half over, and any stumble or protracted battle could risk a government shutdown then as well. There’s expected to be an immediate infusion of 2017 cash for the Pentagon of $20 billion or more, and also the first wave of funding for Trump’s promised border wall and other initiatives like hiring immigration agents. Somalia declares ‘national disaster’ over drought

Somalia’s new leader has declared a national disaster for a prolonged drought that has forced about half of the country’s population to seek urgent food assistance and sparked fears of a potential famine. The announcement on Tuesday by President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed’s office came a day after the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned that Somalia was at risk of its third famine in 25 years - the last one in 2011 killed some 260,000 people. “The president has appealed to the international community to urgently respond to the calamity in order to help families and individuals to recover from the effects of the drought disaster to avoid humanitarian tragedy,” read a statement from the presidency. According to WHO, more than 6.2 million people - half of Somalia’s population - needed urgent humanitarian aid, including almost three million who are going hungry. The agency said more than 363,000 acutely malnourished children and 70,000 severely malnourished children needed urgent, lifesaving support. Somalia is one of three countries, along with Yemen and Nigeria, on the verge of famine which has already been declared in South Sudan. Last week,

the UN said more than 20 million people face starvation in the four countries, adding it needed $4.4bn by the end of next month to prevent “a catastrophe” of hunger and famine. Aid agencies are concerned that the drought is exacerbating the country’s ongoing humanitarian crisis, while there are reports that the ongoing conflict with the alShabab armed group is further blocking access to food. Al Jazeera’s Fahmida Miller, reporting from Dolow in southern Somalia, said she spoke to a number of refugees and internally displaced people. “One woman we spoke to said it took her 11 days to find food and water. She said trying to get the assistance was near impossible because of threats from al-Shabab,” she said. “People here are losing livestock; rivers and water points have dried up; and there is a huge issue around internally displaced people and refugees moving through Somalia looking for food and water,” Miller added. “As the rainfall is expected to stay low, there have already been a number of failed crop seasons, and people can’t grow their own food and have to move through the country looking for assistance.” Source: Al-Jazeera

UN: Both sides committed war crimes in Syria’s Aleppo

Both sides in last year’s battle for Syria’s Aleppo city committed war crimes, including a “deliberate” bombing of a humanitarian convoy by the Syrian government, according to a new United Nations investigation. The UN Commission of Inquiry’s report released on Wednesday said Syrian government and allied Russian forces “pervasively used” unguided munitions to bomb densely populated areas in rebel-held eastern Aleppo between July and its fall on December 22, amounting to the war crime of indiscriminate attacks. These included aerial bombs, air-to-surface rockets, cluster munitions, incendiary bombs, barrel bombs, and weapons delivering toxic industrial chemicals. But investigators could not say whether both Syrian and Russian forces had used them in Aleppo or only one had. Neither did they attribute any specific war crime investigated to Russian forces. “Throughout the period under review, the skies over Aleppo city and its environs were jointly controlled by Syrian and Russian air forces ... (They) use predominantly the same aircraft and weap-

ons, thus rendering attribution impossible in many cases,” the report said. Aleppo, once Syria’s largest city and former commercial hub, had been divided into rebel and government parts since 2012. The recapture of its eastern sector in late December by government forces was the biggest blow to Syria’s rebel movement since fighting started in 2011. Syrian helicopters unleashed toxic chlorine bombs “throughout 2016” on Aleppo, a banned weapon that caused hundreds of civilian casualties there, the report said. At least 5,000 pro-government forces also encircled eastern Aleppo in a “surrender or starve” tactic, it said. In a major new finding, the investigators also accused the Syrian government of a “meticulously planned and ruthlessly carried out” air strike on a UN and Syrian Red Crescent convoy at Orum al-Kubra, in rural western Aleppo on September 19 which killed 14 aid workers. President Bashar al-Assad’s government has fiercely denied responsibility for the convoy’s bombardment and a separate UN probe in December said it was impossible to establish

Taliban claims deadly Kabul attacks

The Taliban has attacked targets in different parts of the Afghan capital, Kabul, including a police headquarters in the western part of the city, killing at least 16 people and wounding dozens. A suicide car bomber on Wednesday struck an Afghan police precinct in western Kabul, the interior ministry said. Immediately after the blast, gunfire rang out, witnesses told Al Jazeera, in a continuing attack which sent clouds of acrid smoke billowing into the sky. Shortly after, a suicide bomber blew himself up at the gates of an Afghan intelligence agency branch in eastern Kabul as another attacker was gunned down while trying to enter the compound, according to the ministry. “Unfortunately, 16 people have been killed in the two attacks in Kabul,” said Waheed Majroh, a spokesman for the Afghan health ministry, adding that a further 44 people were wounded. A Taliban spokesman claimed the group inflicted heavy casualties. Police sources told Al Jazeera that a suicide car bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle next to the police station and near a military training centre. The explosions were large enough to be heard outside of the city. The UN Security Council “condemned in the strongest terms the heinous and cowardly terrorist attacks”, and urged states to cooperate with Afghan

authorities to bring “perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors” of such acts to justice. Afghan security forces are battling a resurgent Taliban amid record casualties and mass desertions, as the fighters escalate nationwide attacks even in winter months, when the fighting usually wanes. Repeated bids to launch peace negotiations with the Taliban have failed and an intense new fighting season is expected to kick off in the spring Source: Al-Jazeera

Possible Vancouver housing market corrections a concern, says Scotiabank CEO

The CEO of Scotiabank says he’s concerned about the possibility of a housing market correction in Vancouver and Toronto. Brian Porter, who was asked about his outlook for the Canadian mortgage market during a conference call to discuss the bank’s first-quarter results, said he’s supportive of recent government changes introduced to reel in house price growth. “Trees don’t grow to the sky and markets will correct at some stage here,” Porter told analysts Tuesday after the bank reported net income of $1.49 billion during the first quarter of the year. Ottawa introduced a series of changes to mortgage rules last October, including one that requires all insured mortgages undergo a stress test to make sure that borrowers would still be able to repay their loans if interest rates rise or their circumstances change. Previously, stress tests were not necessary for fixed-rate mortgages longer than five years. “I think we’re going to need some time to see those take hold, and we will see that through the spring mortgage season,” blame. But after analysing satellite images, forensic evidence and other material, the inquiry determined that “Syrian air forces targeted (the) humanitarian aid convoy”. “By using air-delivered munitions with the knowledge that humanitarian workers were operating in the location, Syrian forces committed the war crimes of deliberately attacking humanitarian relief personnel, denial of humanitarian aid, and attacking civilians,” the report said. During the recapture of eastern Aleppo, pro-government forces arrested doctors and aid workers and committed reprisal executions, the report said. According to the report, opposition groups shelled government-controlled western Aleppo, indiscriminately firing with no clear military target. As the opposition resistance was crumbling and civilians tried to escape, some rebel armed groups prevented civilians from fleeing eastern Aleppo, using them as “human shields”, and attacked the residential Kurdish district of Sheikh Maqsoud - both war crimes. The US-led coalition did not conduct any offensive air missions over Aleppo in the second half of the year, the UN investigators said. The findings - released as Syrian peace talks continue in

Porter said. Porter highlighted the bank’s “very conservative mortgage book,” saying more than half of its portfolio of mortgage loans is insured. “So really the message is we’re governing ourselves accordingly,” he added. Scotiabank chief financial officer Sean McGuckin said that if prices continue to grow, more government intervention may be useful. “I wish I had a crystal ball. I just don’t have one in terms of where prices will go,” McGuckin said in an interview. Source: Vancouver Sun the Swiss city of Geneva - was based on 291 interviews with victims and witnesses, as well as analysis of forensic evidence and satellite imagery. Al Jazeera’s Mohammed Jamjoom, reporting from Geneva, said the authors of the report stated that there was “just no accountability”. “Even though this is being documented, even though the world knows this is going on ... UN investigators said the fact of the matter is no side in this conflict feels that they are accountable when it comes to committing these atrocities,” he said. “The bigger question now is, if this is documented, what is going to happen?” he said. “What the press was told was that the UN is preparing a dossier so if there is a tribunal that eventually happens, the evidence is ready to try to prosecute those who are accused of doing war crimes.” Russia and China blocked in 2014 a request for the International Criminal Court to open up investigations of war crimes committed during the war in Syria. The Syrian government has repeatedly denied using chemical weapons in the war that has killed nearly 400,000 people and displaced almost half the country’s population since 2011. Source: Al-Jazeera

FAITH

Narrated Ibn ‘Umar: Allah’s Apostle said, “Amongst the trees, there is a tree, the leaves of which do not fall and is like a Muslim. Tell me the name of that tree.” Everybody started thinking about the trees of the desert areas. And I thought of the date-palm tree but felt shy to answer the others then asked, “What is that tree, O Allah’s Apostle ?” He replied, “It is the date-palm tree.” Sahih Bukhari 3:Knowledge

Repel evil with good and win the hearts of enemies

I

By: Abu Amina Elias n the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful Allah has praised those who respond to evil with good deeds. Those who repel evil with good will find that their enemies will become their friends. Allah said: Not equal are the good deed and the bad deed. Repel evil by that which is better, and then the one who is hostile to you will become as a devoted friend. But none is granted it except those who are patient and none is granted it except one having a great fortune. Surah Fussilat 41:34-35 Ibn Abbas commented on this verse, saying: Allah commands the believers to be patient when they feel angry, to be forbearing when confronted with ignorance, and to forgive when they are mistreated. If they do this, Allah will save them from Satan and subdue their enemies to them until they become like close friends. Source: Tafsīr al-Qur’ān al-‘Aẓīm 41:34 Allah has commanded the believers in several verses to repel evil with good by being patient, merciful, and forgiving when confronted with mistreatment. Allah said: Those who are patient, seeking the countenance of their Lord, and establish prayer and spend from what We have provided for them, secretly and publicly, and repel evil with good, for those will have the good end.Surat ar-Ra’d 13:22 And Allah said: Those will be given their reward twice for what they patiently endured and they repel evil with good, and they spend from what We have provided them. Surat al-Qasas 28:54 And Allah said: Repel evil with what is better. We are most knowing of what they describe. Surat al-Mu’minun 23:96 And Allah said: They are those who spend in charity during ease and hardship and who restrain their anger and pardon the people, for Allah loves those who are good. Surat Ali Imran 3:134 The Prophet has taught us to respond with good deeds to those who are evil to us. Aisha reported: The Prophet was not indecent, he was not obscene, he would not shout in the markets, and he would not respond to an evil deed with an evil deed, but rather he would pardon and overlook. Shu’b al-Imān 7467 There are many instances in the life of the Prophet in which he would be good to those who were evil to him. Anas ibn Malik reported: I was walking with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while he was wearing a Najrani sheet with a thick border. A desert Arab overtook the Prophet and forcibly pulled his clothes. I looked at the shoulder of the Prophet and I saw that the edge of his shirt had left a mark because of the strength of his pull. The man said: O Muhammad, order them to give me something from Allah’s wealth which you have! The Prophet turned and he smiled, then he ordered that he be given charity. Source: Sahih Bukhari 5738, Grade: Sahih On one occasion, the Prophet was cursed by a group of Jews and he reacted with patience and forbearance. Aisha reported: A group of Jews asked permission to visit the Prophet and when they were admitted they said, “Death be upon you.” I said to them, “Rather, death and the curse of Allah be upon you!” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: O Aisha, Allah is kind and he loves kindness in all matters. Source: Sahih Bukhari 6528, Grade: Muttafaqun Alayhi In another narration, the Prophet said: O Aisha, Allah does not love obscenity and immorality. Source: Sahih Muslim 2165, Grade: Sahih Al-Bukhari cited this tradition as evidence that the Prophet did not punish non-Muslims who blasphemed against him. On another occasion, the Prophet was

asked to invoke curses upon the idolaters who were persecuting the Muslims and he refused to do so. Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was told, “O Messenger of Allah, pray against the idolaters!” The Prophet said: Verily, I was not sent to invoke curses, but rather I was only sent as mercy. Source: Sahih Muslim 2599, Grade: Sahih Allah has mentioned that it is the practice of the prophets to patiently the abuse of those who wrong them. Allah said: Their messengers said to them: We are only men like you, but Allah confers favor upon whom He wills of His servants. It has never been for us to bring you evidence except by permission of Allah, and upon Allah let the believers rely. Why should we not rely upon Allah while He has guided us to our ways? We will surely be patient against whatever harm you cause us, and let them depend upon Allah those who would rely. Surat Ibrahim 14:11-12 In order for Muslims to emulate these beautiful examples, the Prophet would tell stories of others prophets in the past who asked Allah to forgive their people even as they were being beaten and harmed by them. Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, tell the story of a prophet who was beaten by his people and he wiped the blood from his face, saying: My Lord, forgive my people for they do not know. Source: Sahih Bukhari 6530, Grade: Muttafaqun Alayhi An-Nawawi comments on this tradition, saying:In this tradition is what the Prophet practiced of forbearance, patience, forgiveness, and compassion for his people, his supplication for them to receive guidance and to be forgiven, and for them to be excused for their sins as they did not know. Source: Sahih Muslim 1792 Hence, we should strive to practice patience, mercy, and forgiveness whenever we are confronted with abuse. We should control our anger, pardon people, and supplicate for Allah to guide those who have gone astray. If we do so, we will win the hearts of our enemies and turn them into our close friends. Success comes from Allah, and Allah knows best. Source: IslamiCity

VICTORIA - British Columbia’s fifth-consecutive balanced budget delivers the dividends of a strong and diversified economy and prudent fiscal management by cutting costs for middle-class B.C. families, investing in priority programs and services, and promoting a competitive, job-creating economy, Finance Minister Michael de Jong announced. Balanced Budget 2017 funds new investments for classrooms, mental health services, and other supports for families, children, and those most in need, while leaving nearly $1 billion more in the pockets of B.C. families by cutting Medical Services Plan (MSP) premiums in half as a first step to eliminating them entirely as it becomes affordable. Beginning Jan. 1, 2018, MSP premiums will be reduced by 50% for households with an annual net income of up to $120,000. Following this change, more than two million British Columbians will pay no premiums and a further two million will see a 50% reduction in their premiums-cutting premiums near to levels set in 1993. up to $40,000 and two children will see their monthly premiums drop from $46 to $23. A family with net income less than $35,000 and two children will see their monthly premiums eliminated. Balanced Budget 2017 makes significant new investments in classrooms. Compared to Budget 2016, the Education budget will increase by $740 million over three years, including $228 million more to fund enrolment growth in B.C. schools, funding for rural education enhancement, student transportation, K-12 salary costs, continued funding for the Learning Improvement Fund, and an incremental $320 million over three years while government works to conclude a final agreement with the BC Teachers’ Federation on class size and composition. Budget 2017 is also funding $2 billion in school capital projects over three years-to build, replace, renovate, seismically upgrade, and repair schools across the province. The Ministry of Health will see a three-year increase of $4.2 billion compared to its 2016-17 base budget, including funding to support government’s $100-million, three-year enhancement in services addressing mental health and substance use issues, particularly for youth. Budget 2017 also includes funding for $2.7 billion in health capital projects-including new patient care towers at both the Penticton Regional Hospital and the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops. Is NATO Obsolete?

By:Jonathan Power What does US President Donald Trump think about NATO? Twice during his election campaign he rubbished it publically, saying it was “obsolete.” Yet this month, when he met UK Prime Minister Therese May, he told her he supported NATO 100 percent. A few influential people have argued that it is indeed obsolete. One of them was William Pfaff, the late, much-esteemed columnist for the International Herald Tribune. Another is Paul Hockenos, who set out his views in a seminal article in World Policy Journal. Their words fell on deaf ears. Former US President George H.W. Bush saw it differently, and wanted to see the Soviet Union more involved in NATO’s day-today work. His successor Bill Clinton had another agenda, one that turned out to be dangerous, triggering Moscow’s current hostility toward the West: To expand NATO, incorporating one by one Russia’s former East European allies. His successors continued that approach, with Barack Obama raising a red rag to a bull by calling for the inclusion of Ukraine and Georgia. NATO’s job, as British Secretary-General Lord Ismay said in 1967, was to “keep the Russians out, the Americans in and the Germans down.” It certainly succeeded with the latter two. To some extent, it did find a role after the Berlin Wall came down. It led humanitarian interventions in Bosnia in 1995 and against Serbia in 1999. In 2003 it deployed troops into Afghanistan. At one time the NATOled force rose to 40,000 for 40 countries, including all 27 NATO allies. Nevertheless, some of us do not see these as great successes. Most historians who have examined the evidence are convinced

that the late Soviet leader Joseph Stalin had no intention of invading Western Europe. World War II was won, the Soviet Union had a ring of friends around its borders, and Germany was divided. The allies had been an invaluable help, and the Soviets did not feel threatened by their former comrades in arms. So often overlooked is that the Soviet Union bore the brunt of defeating Germany, and lost by far the most fighting men and civilians. Thorough searches by Western historians through Soviet archives, opened under President Boris Yeltsin, have revealed that Moscow had no plans to invade Europe. Yes, it is. The EU should take over most of NATO’s role: Doing more of what it has done in Georgia and stabilizing the Balkans, making use of its massive “soft power,” and thus undergirding world security. Jonathan Power Today, despite its deployments in the former Yugoslavia and Afghanistan, NATO is not a truly multilateral institution of equals. The Europeans do not initiate military action (with the exception of Libya, which led to the overthrow and killing of President Muammar Qaddafi). It is the Americans who do that, and the Europeans follow, whatever their reservations. Moreover, obeying the US rather than following their own convictions in the former Yugoslavia, they did not seek UN Security Council permission, and then are angry that Russia followed suit with its grabbing of Crimea. NATO has no relevance to the problems that truly occupy Europe today. Its hands are tied in Ukraine; it has nothing to contribute to the massive refugee crisis; it cannot help deal with the fact, as an EU study concluded, that there will be an increase in tensions over declining water supplies in the Middle East that will affect Europe’s security and economic interests; nor can it do anything to contribute to the fight against global warming, in the long run the most severe threat that confronts humanity. Regarding the “war on terrorism,” there is little NATO can do as a combined action force. At home, each government deals with the issue itself. In the fight against Al-Qaeda and Daesh in

additional resources over and above these budgeted amounts for addictions treatment and mental health. Balanced Budget 2017 provides an additional $796 million over three years to support families, individuals and children most in need, including: • $287 million over the next three years to the Ministry of Children and Family Development, of which $120 million is to begin addressing recommendations of the Grand Chief Ed John Report on Indigenous Child Welfare. • $199 million to fund a $600 per year increase to income assistance rates for persons with disabilities. • $175 million to provide income assistance supports for those in need, including $8 million to exempt additional child-related benefits, expected to help 600 families and 1,000 children. • $135 million over three years for community living services, primarily via Community Living B.C. The Province continues to act to address housing supply and improve housing affordability for middle-class B.C. families. Government has committed $920 million to support the creation of over 5,300 affordable housing units. Leading up to Budget 2017, government committed an additional $65 million to fund another 380 affordable housing units to house the homeless and those with mental health or substance use issues. The BC HOME Part-

nership program, launched in January 2017, will provide more than $700 million in repayable down payment assistance over the next three years to help over 42,000 individuals and families get into the housing market for the first time. As well, the threshold for the first-time homebuyer’s program will be increased to $500,000, saving first-time buyers up to $8,000 in property transfer tax on the purchase of their first home. Other changes to help support workers, jobs and the ability of businesses to compete internationally and remain resilient in a challenging global trade climate include: • Eliminating PST on electricity over the coming two years-saving small, medium, large and industrial businesses across the province $164 million by 2019-20, which further encourages use of clean B.C. hydro power. This measure was recommended by the Commission on Tax Competitiveness. • Cutting the small business corporate income tax rate to 2% from 2.5%. • Extending and enhancing sector tax credits for tech, Scientific Research and Experimental Development, venture capital to support innovation, commercialization, and the tech sector. • Investing a record $13.7 billion over three years in new and upgraded provincial taxpayer-supported infrastructure to support services and jobs.

Christy Clark’s “Forget Everything”

budget can’t erase years of neglect, says Horgan

— Christy Clark’s “Forget Everything” preelection budget is cold comfort to people after a decade and a half of B.C. Liberal neglect, says B.C. New Democrat Leader John Horgan.“Christy Clark made life worse for ordinary families. And now that an election is coming she wants people to forget everything,” said Horgan. “The B.C. Liberals are using their cash surplus to make you forget there’s a deficit in the services people care about.“She wants people to forget that she hit them with endless hikes to Medical Services Plan premiums, rising hydro bills, skyrocketing housing costs, a crisis in child care affordability, and the worst wage growth in Canada. “Christy Clark wants British Columbians to forget the $300,000 she took from her wealthy friends, and the billion-dollar tax break she gave to her big money donors in return.“She wants people to forget that her government doubled MSP premiums and only now, on the eve of an election, she promises to reverse that damage. “She wants people to forget that their wages haven’t gone up while housing costs have spiraled out of reach for too many people. “The only thing Christy Clark cares about is winning the next election. After years of neglect why would anyone believe she is going to change now?” Horgan noted that since Christy Clark was elected the average family is paying more than $1,000 more for Hydro, MSP and ICBC fees alone. Syria and Iraq, the Americans, Brits, French and Russians battle them in their own way. In Afghanistan, NATO troops are losing territory to the Taliban year by year, and the poppy crop provides ever-more heroin to subvert Europe and Asia. It is difficult to believe that otherwise sensible men and women in NATO countries believe they should have stayed on in Afghanistan after their original target — Al-Qaeda, the source of the Sept. 11 attacks — was driven out of Afghanistan and dealt a severe body blow. This was not in their UN mandate, and it has led to America’s longest war with no end in sight. It is a fruitless cause, and the defeat

“Fifteen years of cuts from our kids’ classrooms, and robbed an entire generation of children of opportunity — and Christy Clark says ‘Forget about it,’” said Horgan. “She wants British Columbians to forget thatshe was forced by the Supreme Court of Canada to restore what she cut from our schools. “Christy Clark is hoping her ‘forget everything’ budget will distract from the fact that 9 in 10 seniors’ care homes are understaffed. “She is hoping that if her promises are outrageous enough people will forget all the times she simply made things up. “One ‘forget everything’ budget isn’t going to change who Christy Clark is really working for. She didn’t work for you after the last election and she won’t work for you after the next one,” Horgan said. It’s time to make government work for people again.” of the Taliban by these means should never have been attempted. NATO countries should have limited themselves to building schools, hospitals, clinics, water supplies, sanitation systems and roads. The EU should take over most of NATO’s role: Doing more of what it has done in Georgia and stabilizing the Balkans, making use of its massive “soft power,” and thus undergirding world security. Syria opposition calls for Russian backing in Geneva

Syria’s main opposition group has urged Russia to put pressure on the government of President Bashar al-Assad to shore up faltering efforts to end the conflict. The rebels’ comments on Monday at a fourth round of UN-backed talks in Geneva came as a ceasefire at home fell apart. The High Negotiations Committee (HNC), the main opposition group at the UN-sponsored talks, said it expects to meet a Russian delegation on Tuesday in the Swiss city. “We hope ... that we will see real, positive and constructive support to the political process,” said lead opposition negotiator Nasr al-Hariri after holding talks with Staffan de Mistura, the UN special envoy for Syria. “We hope … to see support [from Moscow] for the peace process which will ultimately lead to peace by putting pressure on the regime.” Hariri’s comments came on the heels of the opposition’s second meeting with de Mistura in Geneva. “[Moscow] has tried to be neutral,” Hariri said. “The fact that it has recognised [moderate rebel factions] as a negotiating party is an indication of Russia’s openness and we are hopeful that tomorrow’s meeting is also a positive indication.” He said the HNC had presented de Mistura with a proposed agenda and two memoranda of understanding that dealt with the “catastrophic humanitarian situation” in opposition areas and ceasefire violations that have taken place since February 23, when the delegations arrived in Geneva. Moscow, a central backer of the Assad government, has taken a lead role in the diplomatic process since

its air force helped the Syrian army and its allied militias defeat rebels in Aleppo last year, dealing the opposition its biggest loss of the war. On the heels of multilateral talks in Kazakhstan, the Geneva meetings mark the latest initiative to bring an end to a six-year war that has killed nearly half a million people and displaced more than half the country’s prewar population. But a fragile ceasefire intended to facilitate the diplomatic process fell further apart over the weekend, as suicide attacks and air strikes threatened to derail the nascent talks. In a press conference over the weekend, hours after a deadly suicide attack on army intelligence branches in Homs, lead government negotiator Bashar al-Jaafari talked almost exclusively about “anti-terrorism”. The opposition believes the government’s empha-

sis on “terrorism” means Damascus is not committed to a real diplomatic process in Geneva. “The regime must stop its lies. It is the biggest terrorist and it has continued to play the ‘terrorism card’ to delegitimise the revolution,” said Hariri. “Until this moment, we have not found a serious partner for peace and stability in Syria.” Air strikes and ground battles have steadily increased over the past month as pro-government forces press offensives on key opposition areas such as besieged East Ghouta in the Damascus countryside, the besieged neighbourhood of al-Waer - the last rebel-held area in Homs - and the province of Deraa in the country’s south. During Monday’s press conference, Hariri accused the government of killing 1,161 civilians - including 216 children and more than 150 women - since

a nationwide ceasefire went into effect on December 30. Al Jazeera was unable to independently verify the figures. Rebel leader and negotiator Mohammed Alloush, who led talks last month in Astana but has kept a low profile since arriving to Geneva, told Reuters earlier on Monday that the uptick in violence was a sign that the Russians have failed to enforce the truce despite promises from the “highest levels of the Russian delegation”. While the lineup of Russia’s delegation for Tuesday’s meeting has not yet been finalised, it could include Russia’s Middle East director Sergei Vershinin, who attended the talks in Astana, and possibly Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov, who arrived in Geneva on Monday to take part in the annual UN Human Rights Council meeting. De Mistura, who is charged with keeping the talks alive, has so far met with both sides in separate meetings, and is set to meet again with the government delegation on Tuesday. While bilateral meetings thus far have primarily covered issues relating to the format of the talks, the UN’s goal is to bring government and opposition delegations together to discuss elements of a “transition” in Syria, including governance, a constitution and elections. For the Syrian opposition, the only route for lasting peace remains a political transition that ensures Assad’s removal, but the government in Damascus has consistently refused to consider the president’s removal an option. Abbas: Defend two-state solution for a Palestine state

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has called on the international community to defend the two-state solution in an address at the opening of the 34th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council. Abbas told member states on Monday that Israel was moving towards an “apartheid solution” in Palestine in light of a new Israeli law passed earlier this month that legalised dozens of Jewish-only settlement outposts built on private Palestinian land. He also cautioned states against moving their embassies in Israel to Jerusalem, in a warning seen as a direct response to promises made by US President Donald Trump during his campaign for the White House in which he threatened to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to the divided holy city. “Palestine will remain the litmus test for this council … and whether it succeeds or not, will be crucial for the credibility of the human rights system throughout the world,” said Abbas. Abbas was the first of more than 100 dignitaries to speak at the “high-level segment” of this year’s session. The last and only time Abbas addressed the council was in 2015. The 34th session also marked first address to the UNHRC by Antonio Guterres, who began his tenure as the new UN secretary-general in January. After the three-day, high-level session, the council is expected to move on to issues such as the death penalty, racial profiling and incitement. “Palestine today is a truth, a reality anchored in history and the international system. It was recognised

by the international community in 2012, 138 states have recognised it and its flag is raised at the United Nations,” he said. “We call for the establishment of a system that would guarantee an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital on the 1967 borders.” Israel has militarily occupied East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip since 1967, and has since facilitated the creation of hundreds of Jewishonly settlements across the occupied territories. More than a half million Israelis live in Jewish-only settlements across the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, according to the Israeli rights group B’Tselem. While all settlements are considered illegal under international law, more than 100 outposts have been built without authorisation and are considered illegal by even the Israeli government. Abbas went on to reiterate his appeal for an “international protection regime” that would guarantee “the end of Israel’s occupation, the confiscation of land, the theft of water resources and the destruction of homes”. He called on states that have not done so to recognise officially the state of Palestine, and for the international community to come up with a precise timetable for an end to Israel’s occupation. Abbas’ speech at the UNHRC comes just weeks after President Donald Trump appeared to walk away from a long-standing US commitment to the two-state-solution. “Looking at two-state or one-state, I like the one that both parties like. I’m very happy with the one both par-

ties like. I can live with either one,” Trump said during a joint press conference with Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, in advance of their first official meeting at the White House. A two-state solution - the idea of Israel and Palestine living sideby-side and at peace - has been the bedrock of US diplomacy for the past two decades. Nikki Haley, the newly appointed US ambassador to the UN, quickly put out a statement saying the US “absolutely” supports a two-state-solution, but was looking for new ideas to push things forward. US-based outlet Politico reported on Saturday that the Trump administration was debating the idea of quitting the UNHRC over its alleged anti-Israeli bias. During this year’s session,

the council is expected to receive at least three reports detailing allegations of Israeli human-rights abuses against Palestinians in East Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. A separate report set to be submitted during this year’s session will focus on the Druze community in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights, according to the Jerusalem Post. A resolution reiterating the UNHRC’s call for Israel to return the Golan Heights to Syria is expected by the end of this year’s session on March 24. Israel captured the Syrian Golan Heights during the 1967 Middle East war, and officially annexed it in 1981. Source: Al-Jazeera

Canada to welcome 1200 Yazidi and other survivors of Daesh

Canada plans to welcome approximately 1200 survivors of Daesh this year, including vulnerable Yazidi women and children and their families, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada Minister Ahmed Hussen announced today. It is expected that nearly 400 governmentassisted refugees will have arrived by February 22, 2017, which is 120 days from the date of the motion passed by the House of Commons last fall. Canada is working with the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), with the cooperation and support of the Iraqi government, to identify vulnerable Yazidi and other survivors of Daesh both inside and outside of Iraq. While neither Canada nor the UNHCR makes selection decisions on the basis of religion or ethnicity alone, it is expected the majority of the 1200 Canada will welcome will be Yazidi. While vulnerable women and children are being identified, the total includes their family members in order to keep families together. In addition to the 1200 government-assisted refugees Canada will welcome, we are also facilitating the private sponsorship of individuals who fall within this vulnerable group. More Yazidi and other survivors of Daesh will arrive in Canada as privately sponsored refugees. All individuals will have an immigration and security interview by an experienced visa of-

ficer, comprehensive security screening and biometric checks as well as medical exams. As part of the screening process, additional work is being done to identify settlement needs. These individuals have experienced severe trauma, thus coordination with the settlement community in Canada is underway to ensure that settlement services are available to meet the particularly acute needs of those we are welcoming. The estimated cost for this initiative is $28 million. Quote “Our Government is committed to offering protection to survivors of Daesh, and we are committed to taking the necessary time to do this right. Our operation aims to bring to Canada those at the greatest risk, and to give them the support and services they need to make a new home, and to restart their lives here.” - The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship “Canada and UNHCR are working very closely to identify and resettle some of the most vulnerable survivors of Daesh who are willing to be relocated to Canada from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, where the local authorities and other partners are involved in the process. Canada’s response to the plight of survivors of Daesh, through humanitarian funding for essential services in countries hosting refugees and displaced persons in the region, and through the resettlement of survivors, is commendable.” Jean-Nicolas Beuze, UNHCR Representative in Canada

This Is Why You Should Never Charge Your Phone in a Public Port Here are a few more tips to help protect You’re definitely better off with a dead cell. By Lyndsey Matthews ou’ve been there before. You’re on errand number five for the day and your cell phone flashes a warning that it only has three percent battery left. So you stop for a cup of coffee, pop your USB charger into a public outlet at the cafe and— poof—your phone comes back to life. But you shouldn’t feel relieved just yet. While you’ll be able to finish up your day without a dead phone, if the outlet or charging station you used was hacked you could seriously compromise your phone and the data on it.“Just by plugging your phone into

a [compromised] power strip or charger, your device is now infected, and that compromises all your data,” Drew Paik of security firm Authentic8 told CNN. In the same way that your USB cord can download photos from your phone to your computer, that cord can also transmit data between your phone and a compromised outlet—allowing a hacker to access your text messages, photos, contacts and email. Since there’s no way to tell whether or not a public outlet or charging station has been compromised, you should avoid plugging your phone into one in the future.

your phone:

This one is a no-brainer, but try to charge your phone at home as much as possible so there’s less need to charge it in public. Buy a portable USB battery pack and make sure it’s always in your purse. Invest in a USB cord that doesn’t transmit data like most charging cords. In a pinch, if you need to charge in a public outlet make sure your phone is locked with a PIN or a password. That way your phone shouldn’t pair with any device it may be connected to, according to howtogeek.com www.marieclaire.com/culture.

The Science and Practice of Staying Present Through Difficult Times

Research suggests that we turn towards pain and discomfort, we can experience less of it. Plus — a guided meditation for being mindful when things get tough. By Ed Halliwell The Science of Staying Present Research into mindfulness has shown the benefits of staying present, and of gently turning towards difficulty. Mindfulnessbased relapse prevention (MBRP) trains people with addictive habits to manage their cravings mindfully by staying present to the sensations of craving, rather than trying to distract from them, avoid them or defeat them. In a large trial of MBRP, mindfulnesstrained patients drank and used drugs significantly less than those who were treated with cognitive-behavioural approaches, and a control group who attended twelve-step and psycho-education groups. The authors of the study conclude that mindfulness was the most successful approach, especially over the longer term, because it enabled patients to “monitor and skilfully cope with discomfort associated with craving or negative affect.” A similar study with smokers found that mindfulness training was more than five times as effective as a standard smoking cessation programme, as measured by abstinence from cigarettes after four months (31 per cent compared to 6 per cent). Another study has suggested that mindful people are more able to tolerate their own distress, rather than react in harmful ways. When gently turning towards pain, people report that they experience less of it, and their resistance usually decreases. There are benefits to staying present with physical, as well as emotional, discomfort. Fadel Zeidan and colleagues suggest that meditation practice is associated with brain changes that indicate and reflect shifts in people’s experience of, and relationship with, pain. Meditators show decreased activity in the primary somatosensory cortex (an area of the brain involved in registering pain) and increased activity in three areas involved in the regulation of pain—the anterior insula, the anterior cingulate cortex and the prefrontal cortex. When gently turning towards pain, people report that they experience less of it, and their resistance usually decreases. They may not get so caught up in the negative stories and evasive reactions that tend to accompany pain but do nothing to stop it (and, indeed, may increase the mind’s perception of it). This may be why people with chronic conditions have reported reductions in pain after training in mindfulness, even though they still suffer from the illness. As far back as 1971, Robert Wallace and Herbert Benson found that meditation reduced activity in the sympathetic nervous system, which controls the “fight or flight” reaction. More recently, attending a mindfulness course has been shown to reduce activity and grey matter volume in the amygdala— a key indicator of how strongly this reaction is triggered. With mindfulness training also comes a thickening in parts of the prefrontal cortex—the region directly behind

the forehead—which may be connected to a strengthening of the body’s capacity to regulate stress. Connections between the amygdala and other parts of the brain weaken after mindfulness training. One part of the pre-frontal cortex associated with stress regulation is the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). Poor ACC function tends to correlate with impulsive behaviour and mental inflexibility—which are both common among people who are under stress. Experienced meditators display more activity in the ACC, and better stress regulation. The capacity to self- manage during difficult situations may be trainable at a very young age. One study that tracked a group of preschool children who attended a mindfulness programme over six months found that they were less impulsive (more able to regulate) than a group of children who did not receive the training. The Benefits of Leaning Into Discomfort Just the act of describing unpleasant experiences mindfully can have a positive effect on stress levels. In one study, people with a fear of spiders were asked to walk towards and try to touch a live tarantula. Some were invited to reassure themselves as they approached the spider, while others were advised to distract themselves from what they were trying to do. A third group was encouraged to acknowledge and turn towards their fear, saying something like: “I am frightened by the big ugly spider.” The members of this third group—those who openly stayed present to their fear— got closest to the tarantula, felt least upset by the experience, and had the least sweaty palms. Staying present to difficulties seems to have a significant impact on well-being. In Matt Killingsworth’s studies of wandering minds, he has found that people are less happy when their minds are distracted, even when they are engaged in an activity that we would usually describe as unpleasant. So, for instance, even though most people are not keen on commuting, they tend to be happier if their minds turn towards the experience of the journey rather than wander away from it. Other studies have suggested that setting oneself the goal of avoiding stress increases the long-term risk of depression. By contrast, if we view stress as a normal, helpful indicator—something we can handle and from which we can learn—rather than as something to eliminate, we are more likely

to experience good health and emotional well-being. 15-Minute Guided Mindfulness Meditation: Investigating Difficulty When you’ve established a stable foundation with mindfulness of breath and body you can experiment with turning towards difficulty. Sometimes our experience is painful and difficult. And there may be little or nothing we can do about the arising of the pain or difficulty. In these cases. We may be able to work with what’s happening skillfully by exploring our relationship to it. Most of us have a habitual pattern of turning away from problems or trying to get rid of unpleasant events. Unfortunately this often seems to increase our sense of stress because if pain is already present, you can’t get rid of it by trying to run away from it. So in mindfulness practice we gently experiment with reversing this habit by turning gently towards difficult experiences that come up in our meditation. This practice is usually best done in small doses at first. Preferably working with difficulties that aren’t likely to be overwhelming. It’s important to remember that you’re in charge of how you undertake this experiment. You can return to mindfulness of breathing as an anchor at any time or let go of this practice for a while if you need to, being kind to yourself. 1) Begin by settling into a dignified sitting posture. Upright, steady, grounded. Feeling the feet on the floor, bottom on the chair, spine erect shoulders dropped. Feel a sense of openness at the chest, muscles un-tensed, centered, feeling the breath in the belly. Attuning attention to sensations of the breath as it moves in and out. Being with the breath. Being in the body. 2) And now expanding awareness to experience throughout the body. Being in the present moment with the body. Noticing what you find and allowing what’s here to be here. Especially noticing sensations in the body that are more unpleasant and difficult to be with. Maybe there’s an aching, throbbing, churning, or a tightening somewhere. There may be a physical or a more emotional tone to the sensations. If it feels helpful to label this for yourself, you could mentally say some words describing the experience: anger, pain, or restlessness, for example. Perhaps also noticing where in the body you’re feeling these tones of sensation and emotion. 3) Now inviting you to experiment with gently taking your attention towards a region of more intense sensation. Turning towards the intensity. Being interested in the qualities of and changes in sensation from moment to moment. What increases or decreases in intensity are there? What shifts in location

or texture? As best you can, staying with the direct experience of sensation and letting any thoughts about what’s happening or urges and impulses to react be held in kindly awareness in the background of the mind. Letting go of any need to try and get any kind of result here or for anything to have to change. Just gently turning towards what’s going on. And noticing what happens without an agenda. Riding the waves of experience, moment by moment. 4) If you like you could offer a sense of breathing with the sensations, feeling them together with the rising and falling of the breath. Breathing in with sensations, breathing out with sensations. 5) Noticing: are there any impulses to resist or pull away? Perhaps you find your attention drawn into thoughts. Rumination maybe or distraction. Maybe you find your thoughts trying to make sense of the difficulty or problem solving it or judge the success or failure of the practice by whether the intensity decreases or changes. As best you can, seeing if you can include these reactions in your noticing, allowing space for them to be experienced along with the sensations themselves—without having to buy into them or reject them. 6) If it feels too much to be doing this it’s always okay to continue with or return to mindfulness of breathing or body or to stop practicing for a time. Gentleness is paramount here and there are no right or wrong things to happen when you try this. Just being interested in what does happen when you take your attention into a region of difficulty, moving towards it, letting the experience be observed and awareness without needing to do anything else. 7) And experimenting now if this feels okay for you with breathing into the region of intensity. Opening further to the sensations on the in-breath and having a sense of softening on the out-breath, of letting go. This isn’t to try and change what’s happening but rather to offer a skillful relationship to it. Flowing with it. Offering space to it, allowing it. You could silently say to yourself something like: It’s okay. I can be with this experience, these sensations. Let me experience them fully in awareness. Let me be present to this experience which is already here. Let me stay present to it, with kindness being in gentle compassionate relationship to it as best I can. Breathing into the sensations on the inbreath, breathing out from them on the outbreath, softening, letting be, allowing. 8) Staying with the intensity only for as long as feels manageable for you right now. If you like you can gently move your attention away from and then back towards the intensity noticing what happens each time you work with redirecting your attention in and out. Inviting you to be like a scientist undertaking a laboratory experiment. Being interested in what happens rather than seeking a particular outcome. Coming back to mindfulness of breath or body as and when that feels right for you. www.mindful.org/science-practice

Causes, Symptoms and Fundamental Treatments for Joint Pain (Part 1)

By: Nada Adam Thank you to all who read and follow our articles…and a special thank you to the sister who called me last week asking about Joint Pain. It’s such a great question that we decided to make this topic the primary topic of this week’s article. I am so very grateful to have this opportunity to personally ask Dr. Khaled Hijazi detailed health questions and he’s so very generously took time out from his busy schedule to answer your questions. Dr. Hijazi graciously gave a thorough detailed answer on joint pain since this illness has many sufferers worldwide who would love to have relief…Due to space, Dr. Hijazi’s article will be published in 2 parts - next article will contain the Fundamental treatments according to Humoral Medicine for Joint Pain. I learned a lot from his answer and I’m sure you’ll find Dr. Hijazi’s answer on the question on Joint Pain quite thorough! Question: What causes joint pain and do you treat this illness? Dr. Hijazi said, “The illness of Joint Pain according to Humoral Medicine stems from the residue of the Second Digestion Phase, i.e. what occurs in the liver and also, the residue of Third Digestion Phase that occurs in the blood vessels. Whereas, the residue of the Final Digestion Phase i.e. what occurs when the humors infiltrate the orifices from the arteries of the organs to be transmuted in the category of the nourished organ; the strength of this final phase is not weak in a way that would cause pain. However, Joint Pain is caused mainly, from the residue of the Second and Third Digestion Phases, especially, the residue of the digestion phase that occurs in the Blood Vessels. Joint pain is either from simple causes, by hot, cold or dry temperament or by materialistic causes (of Humoral Temperament)… i.e. predominance of blood, phlegm, yellow bile or black bile and each one of these Temperament has its specific symptoms. Sometimes the materialistic cause has a

E

texture, (i.e. humoral) and sometimes it has no texture (i.e. gaseous); such as in the case of malfunctioning digestion, not performing exercise, drinking too much alcohol in the hot season on an empty stomach or copulation on a full stomach and others. It’s not a condition for joint pain to have swelling. The pain that occurs at the hip joint (Sacro-iliac Joint) is called Hip Pain however the pain that extends down the leg from the hip joint is called Sciatica. The pain at the ankle of the foot or joint pain in one of the toes is called Gout, which mostly occurs in the big toe. Whereas, the pain that occurs in the hand or leg doesn’t have an exclusive name but rather it’s all under the name of Joint Pain. Successful diagnoses occurs, by determining the predominance of the existing blood humour, phlegmatic, yellow bile or black bile humors through personal consultation by examining the external and internal symptoms for each predominant humor. What is needed is to specify the cause of this disease through its symptoms whether the cause is a Simple Temperament or Compounded with Humoral Substances (Materialistic). The Simple Temperament causes are few and rare. It has pain without heaviness, or swelling or change in colour and no sign of substance. Materialistic Causes – the first thing needed to be specified in the material cause is the condition of the category of the substance. The way of specifying this is by identifying symptoms such as, • either from colour of the affected area or the colour of its swelling with pain, and • from the touch…is it cold or hot, inflamed or normal, and • either from the form of pain…whether it is with strong inflammation and throbbing or with moderate inflammation and dilation or just dilation. • what benefits and calms the pain, and • the timing of the pain, and • its increase is on emptiness or fullness • or the beginning of the swelling and whether its swelling rapidly or slowly • or no swelling at all All this needs to be taken into consideration for proper diagnosis. The type of the substance of the humor that causes the illness can be detected from the age, the habit, previous lifestyle - in eating,

drinking, exercise, sedentary lifestyle and opposite to that, and involvement of the temperaments of the whole body. The indications of Blood Humour Substance can be detected from the redness of the affected area if it was not too deep or undetected, this can also be detected by strong dilation, pain feels like pushing, heaviness and throbbing, previous lifestyle and what is known about the conditions of the Sanguine body that the symptoms are specified through examination and consultation. Physical Identifiers: This temperament has a large body and overweight with muscles and fat. The pain in the sanguine sciatica is dilated, lengthwise and has same level of pain top to bottom. The blood humour type pain is calmed instantly by the remedy of Depletion Therapy. The indications of Yellow Bile Humour - Substance can be detected by various aspects: from the excessive hotness that bothers the person touching though the affected area is small, scarcity of heaviness and dilation, scarcity of redness, tendency of the pain to be on the surface of the skin, extreme relief to cold and from the previous lifestyle. All the indications of the predominance yellow bile humour and condition of the yellow bile temperament body are determined by consultation and examination of the patient. The indications of Phlegmatic Humour - Substance can be detected by various aspects: the affected area has no colour change, or changes towards a gray colour, scarcity of inflammation, constant pain, missing symptoms of the predominance of blood humor and yellow bile. The pain subsides in perspiration, his body is full and generally overweight with lots of fat, and no muscle and other indications that are known for the predominance of Phlegmatic humor which are determined by consultation and examination of the

drop out compared to men,” Landry says, explaining that although women face more barriers to rehab, men and women get the same benefits when they do go. With fewer women attending and completing cardiac rehab than men, less is known about their long-term results. Landry and her fellow researchers at WCHI carried out a study that looked at cardiovascular risk factors in women who had already completed the WCHI cardiac rehab program. Women in the WCHI program have supervised exercise sessions twice per week for about six months, and also work with an interdisciplinary team to learn skills to manage their health conditions and their cardiovascular risk factors. Women are offered followup appointments six months after completing the program, and again after one year. The researchers used information from these appointments to look at longterm results. Of the 422 women who completed the WCHI cardiac rehab program from 2007 to 2013, 252 attended a followup appointment six months later, and 183 attended a 12-month followup. “The outcomes that we were specifically looking to monitor related to cardiovascular risk factors,” Landry says. These included systolic blood pressure, cholesterol and lipid profile, blood sugar, and body mass in-

dex, and particularly exercise capacity. “Exercise capacity is a big one. We know that exercise-based cardiac rehab improves aerobic fitness or capacity,” Landry says. “We strongly believe that exercise is medicine, and we know that even small changes to your aerobic capacity confer big protective changes. Aerobic capacity can protect your heart and your risk of having a heart attack, as successfully as some of the medication typically prescribed for heart disease or having a procedure done. So we were really interested in following up on that.” They also looked at depression, and physical and mental quality of life scores. Immediately after finishing the cardiac rehab program, women had made significant gains in exercise capacity and in physical quality of life, and their depression scores had improved compared to when they began the program. Six months later, they had maintained all of those gains. One year after finishing the program, exercise capacity remained significantly higher than when they began. “Specifically we were interested in looking at aerobic capacity, and that was significantly improved,” Landry says. “At the sixmonth followup point, and at the 12-month followup, they had maintained those gains in aerobic capacity, which is what we were hoping to see.”

patient. The indications of Black Bile Humour - Substance can be detected by various aspects: hidden pain, scarcity of dilation, scarcity of the benefit of treatment, no flabbiness in the affected area, no luminosity in the color of the affected area and tends to be darker. This can be identified through the temperament of the patient and the condition of his spleen, excessive appetite, his previous lifestyle and all the indications in identifying the black bile temperament which is determined by consultation and examination of the patient. The gaseous substance can be identified through excessive dilation without heaviness, identified by the movement of pain and previous lifestyle that produces gases. The indications of Compounded Humoral - Substances can be detected by various aspects: • scarcity of benefit from either hot or cold treatment, and • variation of benefit timing of treatments, • can benefit with a certain medicine some time from one type (hot) temperament medicine and sometimes can benefit from opposite (cold) temperament medicine. Mostly this happens to the bodies which are hot in temperament i.e. yellow bile temperament, who use a cold-wet procedure that produces unripe phlegm from nutrition and doing activities on fullness, therefore, the two Humors will mix. The thick Phlegm humour plunges into the joint because of the thinning of the blood from yellow bile. These patients benefited a lot and their pain mostly subsided through gentle massage from large hands - because the humor dissolves and becomes ready to be expelled. These patients also benefitted from ointments with moderate hotness while being still, since movement prevents readiness of the humor to be expelled. If the cause of the joint pain is from Simple non-moderate temper whether it is hot or cold or dry; its symptoms: occurs gradually, there will be no heaviness and no swelling at all. The special symptom of each Temper exists on the patient.”…to be continued next article Next issue, Dr. Hijazi’s Fundamental Treatments for joint pain according to Humoral Medicine. A gift that keeps on giving: long-term benefits of cardiac rehab

xercise is one of the best things most people can do for their health, and that holds true for heart patients as well. People who complete a supervised, exercise-based cardiovascular rehabilitation program after treatment for a heart condition or an event such as a heart attack or bypass fare better than those who do not – including having lower mortality rates. Those immediate benefits of cardiac rehab are well known, but longer-term benefits are not as well defined. “We know about those improvements over the six months of the program: if you complete cardiac rehab, you will have a better cardiovascular risk profile than before rehab, mostly driven by improvements in fitness,” says Mireille Landry, physiotherapist and exercise coordinator with the Women’s Cardiovascular Health Initiative (WCHI) at Women’s College Hospital. “But how long do you maintain it?” For Landry and her fellow clinicians and researchers at the WCHI, that question is particularly important for women. As a program designed specifically and exclusively for women, WCHI has achieved excellent results in improving uptake and completion rates for women patients. “We know that women are typically less likely to attend cardiac rehab, and when they do enroll they’re also more likely to

The study results are very encouraging, reflecting ongoing benefits for women who complete cardiac rehab. The WCHI program has a very high completion rate: 85 per cent of women who begin the program stick with it, and reap the immediate and ongoing benefits. “We were very happy to see that the women who attended our followup program were successful at maintaining the improvements that we saw when they completed rehab,” Landry says. Resisting Raising Children Who Feel Entitled

By Jan Faull, M.Ed. t’s easy to see how children can begin to feel entitled. Daughter wants a doll and Mom buys it. Next she demands a dollhouse, Dad says no, daughter pitches a fit in the toy store, so Dad buys it. Years go by...the child wants to take piano lessons, Mom and Dad agree to the lessons plus they buy a brand new piano. Then daughter wants to join the swim team, Mom and Dad concur and so join the team’s sponsoring country club. The family goes to Hawaii every spring for a vacation; the child begins to expect it. Not only that...rather than teaching the child to save and wait for certain items, the parents find themselves buying videogames, clothes and gadgets because the daughter’s friends have them. Soon the child begins to feel that she’s entitled to whatever her friends have. The parents pull out their credit card and buy whatever the child wants; it’s the parenting path of least resistance. Now at age 10 she’s taking on an air of entitlement. She acts as if she’s entitled to a cell phone, going to the mall with friends, and pierced ears. If she asks and the parents say “no”, she’s indignant. She pouts, sulks, and claims they’re being mean for no reason. The parents know it’s not in their child’s best interest to indulge her every whim. They want to change their ways but realize that they’ve dug themselves into a parenting hole and don’t know how to get out of it. Okay, let’s back up. Certainly children have some entitlements. What are they? Adequate food, shelter, warmth, mental and

emotional health, intellectual challenges, education, fun, play, reasonable choices, creative endeavors, emotional and physical protection, love, sufficient clothing, fair treatment and good relationships. Children are not entitled to having all their wants indulged unconditionally. When they’re babies, yes; but as they get older, satisfying their wants (as opposed to needs) should be appropriate to their age and maturity. Children don’t fare well in the short or long term if all their wishes are magically granted. So when a child makes a request for something that she wants, parents have four options: • Say “yes.” Do so if you deem the activity or object to be appropriate and beyond the child’s ability to acquire on his own. • Tell him that you will not provide whatever it is that he’s wanting, but that he can find a way on his own to acquire it. • Teach him how to acquire it. Help the child save allowances by setting up a savings account at the bank. When he receives money for a gift, he can add it to her account. He can complete extra household chores such as cleaning the garage or mowing the lawn to earn money; these chores should be beyond the daily chores he’s required to complete, such as helping with the dishes or putting away laundry. • Say “no.” Explain why it’s inappropriate. Or tell him that you will help him acquire it when he’s older. If the child goes into a tirade because you’re not indulging her demand, stay with her, as long as she is emotional, but stick with your decision. To deny a child something

to which she feels entitled is painful in the short run, but in the long run the child learns to wait for gratification and to make plans to reach a goal. Children need to know that all they have doesn’t appear by magic or come from money at the ATM machine; rather, they come as a result of planning, hard work, and discipline. You do your child a disservice if she learns that insulting parents, pouting or temper tantrums bring her what she wants. It’s also important to teach children gratitude and appreciation. It can be as simple as telling your child, “I’m buying this bicycle for you because I love you and I want you to have it. I hope you appreciate it and are grateful.” Also, it is helpful for the parent to model an attitude of gratitude and appreciation. And attribute good fortune to hard work, not luck or chance or because you’re more special or better than others. Also, think out loud in regard to financial matters. When you decide to plan and save for a new item, tell your child how you will do so. If you restrain from buying something or going somewhere, allow your child to see you mull over the decision; modeling the discipline of denying yourself instant gratification. Most people will agree that children born into privileged circumstances need to be taught responsibility to help others with less, to give to the community, to be humble, and not to flaunt there privileged lifestyle. When you do allow your child a privilege, make sure you communicate that there are conditions attached: • A cell phone is a privilege; it comes the re-

sponsibility to keep track of minutes, pay the bill, use it where and when it’s appropriate. • A car is a privilege; it comes the responsibility to observe the speed limit, keep it clean, pay for insurance and gas, and obey traffic laws. • A college education is a privilege; it comes with the responsibility to be candid about living arrangements, grades and plans for graduation. In parenting there’s a constant turn-over of power and control from the parent to the child, a constant evolving from dependence to independence and a constant evolving from more entitlements to fewer entitlements. Parents and teachers report that children who learn the discipline of denying instant gratification have better long-term outcomes; they also have better scores on Scholastic Aptitude Tests. It builds a child’s character when he can make plans to reach a goal rather than feeling that he’s entitled to it. Parents serve their children well when they prevent children from taking on an attitude of entitlement. Source:www.parentinvolvementmatters.org/

An Appreciation Game for Kids Building thankfulness and appreciation into the fabric of your family is a gift your kids can rely on when they are faced with disappointment.

P

By Susan Kaiser Greenland ainful thoughts and emotions sometimes show up when children and teens practice appreciation and children can easily misinterpret parents’ reminders to be thankful as an indication that we’re minimizing their challenges, even when that’s not the case. When painful emotions do come up, encourage kids to view how they feel through a wide lens, not to gloss over their feelings or push them aside. When kids acknowledge their hurt feelings and remember the good things in their lives, they embody one of the themes they’ve been exploring—an open mind. Three Good Things gives children a chance to practice this holistic mind-set when they’re upset and they need it the most. The point of this game isn’t to pretend they’re not upset when they feel upset. It’s to remember that they can
feel two things at once. Appreciation Practice:Three Good Things When faced with a disappointment, we acknowledge our feelings, and then we think of three good things in our lives, too.

Leading the game: Ask your child: “Do you ever feel disappointed by something or someone?” Listen to children’s stories. Ask: “How did that make you feel?
” Acknowledge children’s feelings and, if appropriate, talk about them. Say something like: “I bet even when you’re feeling disappointed there are good things happening in your life, too. Let’s name three good things together.” Tips for naming three good things: Remind children that the point of this game isn’t to pretend they’re not upset when they feel upset. It’s to remember that they can
feel two things at once: they can feel grateful for good things while feeling sad, hurt, or disappointed by challenges. If children or teens have trouble thinking of three good things on their own, brainstorm and help them discover some. When kids understand that this game is not about sweeping their feelings under the rug, the phrase “three good things” can become a playful and humorous response to the minor gripes that show
up in family life. For instance, if a young child spills a glass of apple juice and looks like he’s going to cry, you can respond with something like, “Ahhh, that can be frustrating. Can you name Three Good Things while we wipe the counter?” Parents can encourage kids to remind them to name Three Good Things when they’re

stuck on a trivial disappointment or minor annoyance, too. To develop a habit of thankfulness, play Three Good Things around the dinner table, before bedtime, and at other times when the family is together (and no one is upset). The more families carve out time to practice appreciation when life is good, the easier it is for parents and children to be thankful for the good things in life when times are hard.

At first, appreciation and thankfulness may feel like a mere intellectual exercise. Yet the more families carve out time to practice appreciation when life is good, the easier it is for parents and children to be thankful for the good things in life when times are hard. When that shift happens, appreciation becomes an integral part of a family’s worldview and is no longer just an intellectual exercise.

Why going back to work doesn’t suck as much as you think it will

A

by Ariel Brewster few months before my mat leave ended, I started feeling pretty overwhelmed. Summer was ending, fall was in the air and my office wanted to know my exact start date. Gulp. It was time to freak out about daycare waitlists, wonder whether I could even leave my son, Cal, with someone else all week, second-guess my plans to return to work full-time, worry about his ever-evolving sleep problems and routines, wonder about daytime weaning, fret about his ability to self-feed and—are you noticing a theme?—generally question everything. I remember peppering my mom friends for advice on the transition and googling, somewhat ridiculously, “what are the advantages of going back to work.” In hindsight, I was obviously looking for reassurance during such an uncertain time. Well, I went back to work four months ago, and I don’t regret it at all. I’ve been keeping a list for my fellow fretful moms on why it’s been great, both for me and for my kid. Hopefully this will help. 1. Remember that it’s the best of both worlds In Canada, when it comes to parental leave, we’re super lucky: I got to spend almost a year at home with my baby, being a fulltime mom, and then I got to go back to my job and continue my career. If I’d had to go back to work at 12 weeks postpartum, like my American friends, or even at six months, I’m almost certain I would have decided to quit. I just wouldn’t have been able to wrap my head around it. So remembering how fortunate I am to have had that very generous 12 months with my son has really helped. I also went back in November, as a lovely summer and unseasonably warm fall were turning to winter, and that helped me transition, mentally. (I kept humming the lyrics, “to everything, turn, turn, turn…. There is a season, turn, turn, turn.” It may be cheesy, but reminding myself there was a season to be home with my kid, and a time to go back to work, was effective.) 2. A few months makes a big difference If you’re planning to return to work after a standard 12-month leave, you may start to freak out around the eight- or nine-month mark. I remember thinking, how can I possibly leave this helpless little creature with someone new? I still had lots of self-doubt about whether we had really gotten the whole nap thing down (he preferred napping in the stroller or a swing), and mealtimes were a battle (newsflash: they still are). How would a virtual stranger manage his day-to-day? But I promise you that your baby will change a lot between the time when you’re scrambling to find childcare arrangements, lying awake at night worrying how your infant will function without you, and when you actually go back to work.

Many babies become a lot more capable at self-feeding, even with just a few months, or even weeks, of practice. Between putting the deposit down on a daycare spot in September and going back to work in November, Cal naturally, on his own, started nursing less, got more independent at mealtimes and learned to walk. Thankfully, his first steps happened at home, in front of both my husband and me, as we were washing up the dinner dishes on a Saturday night. I was so grateful we both got to see that milestone happen before sending him off to daycare. While I was feeling emotional and nostalgic about “leaving” my baby, he went and turned into a toddler on us. 3. Your baby becomes a social butterfly It is one of the great ironies of modern motherhood that a baby’s separation anxiety phase kicks in right as you’re preparing to return to work. But it’s OK! This is normal, and not a sign that you shouldn’t go back to work. Cal was always an outgoing and happy baby who was fine with new people and places, but he became a lot clingier (and a lot more of a mama’s boy) around nine or ten months. Developmentally, he was right on schedule. This is when babies are learning to explore, wandering around the room or play area and then coming back to their moms (or dads) for a cuddle or just a quick lap visit before heading out again. As they become more and more curious and independent, they just want reassurance that you’re still there for them. This pattern has continued now that Cal’s in daycare, but with longer stretches away from us. By pickup time he needs a few cuddles to recharge. Increasingly, however, he happily toddles right to me with a big smile, and isn’t in meltdown mode every afternoon. He’s getting used to his new routine and thriving on all the new activities, new friends and new environments. Every morning when he gets to daycare, he runs to hug the other toddler boy (adorable!). They often pat each other on the head affectionately, too. It’s been fun to hear about all their adventures when I arrive at the end of the day, or to notice a brand new skill in action, especially if your kid is learning and watching older kids. (Apparently my 14-month-old loves to paint at an easel now. And he’s trying to teach himself to use a skateboard?) His world is getting a lot bigger: He’s gathering a crew of neighbourhood buddies and he’s getting to do all sorts of fun group activities. If I were home with him 24-7, I’m not sure I would marvel as much at the developmental leaps and bounds he’s making. 4. Quality vs. quantity Because I now have less time with Cal during the week, I’m definitely more motivated to make our “together time” count. Sometimes my husband and I even fight over who

My Happiness Matters To Me By: Shabnam Khan - FamilCounsellor For most people, feeling happy and finding life meaningful are both important and related goals. But do happiness and meaning always go together? While happiness and a sense of meaning often overlap, they also diverge in important and surprising ways. As one might expect, people’s happiness levels were positively correlated with whether they saw their lives as meaningful. However, the two measures were not identical – suggesting that what makes us happy may not always bring more meaning, and vice versa. To probe for differences between the two, it’s important to ask detailed questions about people’s feelings and moods, their relationships with others, and their day-to-day activities. Feeling happy was strongly correlated with seeing life as easy, pleasant, and free from difficult or troubling events. Happiness was also correlated with being in good health and generally feeling well most of the time. However, none of these things were correlated with a greater sense of meaning. Feeling good most of the time might help us feel happier, but it doesn’t necessarily bring a sense of purpose to our lives. However, having enough money seemed to make little difference in life’s sense of meaning. People who are wealthy tend to be happier, however, they don’t see their lives as meaningful, while people who are not that wealthy tend to see their lives as more meaningful. This might be related to having a purpose in life, doing things that are important to and

for them, being connected to people and stronger social ties among those that matters. Perhaps instead of saying that “money doesn’t buy happiness,” we ought to say “money doesn’t buy meaning.” Not too surprisingly, our relationships with other people are related to both how happy we are as well as how meaningful we see our lives. Feeling more connected to others improved both happiness and meaning. However, the role we adopt in our relationships makes an important difference. In addition, spending more time with friends was related to greater happiness but not more meaning. When it comes to thinking about how to be happier, many of us fantasize about taking more vacations or finding ways to avoid tasks. However, some tasks which don’t make us happy can, over time, add up to a meaningful life. Even routine activities - talking on the phone, cooking, cleaning, housework, meditating, emailing, praying, reading book and balancing finances - appeared to bring more meaning to people’s lives, but not happiness in the moment. To conclusion happiness can be attained in things which we already have but don’t realize the true meaning . Value and cherish each moment of those precious moments!

gets to do bath time or who’s taking him to swim lessons on Sundays—a big difference from when I was home with the baby all week, yearning to escape for some “me” time and watching the clock as I waited for my husband to finish work. Absence has definitely made my heart grow fonder, and I’m better at not overreacting to typical toddler antics. The quantity of time together has decreased, but the quality has increased. I’m a much more patient mom now. 5. Freedom from the tyranny of a nap schedule This may be the main advantage of going back to work: Once I’m at the office, my workdays are luxuriously unstructured. (That is, until I’m doing the daycare dash like a madwoman.) Aside from meetings, I can eat lunch when I want, pee when I want, make a phone call and go grab a coffee without pushing a stroller or having to coordinate around two or three naps and five diaper changes. I can casually pick up groceries on my lunch break. I can get a haircut in peace. And do not underestimate the beauty of answering emails and sipping tea in your blissfully quiet cubicle—this cannot happen at home. (Unless you have the kind of mellow kid who will quietly play with blocks in the corner while you get some work done. I, however, do not. My toddler will read board books to himself for a maximum of five minutes, then he’s prying the furnace grates out of the floor and stuffing his breakfast toast down the vent holes.) 6. Remembering your strengths and skills

It might feel bizarre at first—your world has changed so much in one year and yet the office likely hasn’t—but I promise you’ll be back in the swing of things at work soon. And then you realize that yes, you’re a mom, and you’re still the awesome employee and productive professional from before your mat leave. Take pride in your ability to multitask and excel at both things; it’s kind of a cool feeling. You made a human being, you’ve kept them alive for this long and you’re doing your job and contributing to a team. I love the sense of accomplishment that I get from being the master of my to-do list at work, whereas, at home with an infant, something as minor as unloading the dishwasher felt like a major victory. It’s less likely now that my day will go off the rails due to a missed nap, unexpected poop explosion or emotional meltdown. (Although I suppose that depends on your workplace.) I’ve also found there’s a Teflon-effect to motherhood: Workplace drama that used to bother me pre-kid doesn’t ruffle my feathers at all. My brain is better at triaging what really matters and only focusing on the big stuff. 7. The anticipation is way worse than the reality The best advice is the simplest: When I was freaking out about returning to work, a coworker told me that in her experience—after two kids—the anticipation and dread as you count down the days of your mat leave is way worse than the reality. Let me reassure you that she was very, very right.

‘The Last Salute’

The aircraft was heavy!

Sqn.Ldr. Nusrat Hussain (R) nh.guidingstar@gmail.com cademy days were the golden days of dreams and ambitions. We enjoyed the never ending ragging, guard duties and continuous bullshitting by our seniors. Some of us ended in BFT hoping to fly the noisy jet T-37 aircraft. Most of the early days of BFT saw us aspiring pilots running like crazy around the squadron wearing flying coveralls and thick heavy flying shoes. The dream of becoming a fighter pilot was turning into a mirage. A normal day started with tortuous emergency sessions and ended with angry dialogues with our instructors. Finally our flying started and there was respite from the running and ragging. Flight Lieutenant Arif, who later rose to the rank of Air Marshall, was the Flight Commander of No 2. Squdron, his amazing character and hefty personality with unlimited energy was often seen moving around the squadron and the flight lines. It was not uncommon to see the broad, heavily built man lumbering onto the tarmac and chasing the aircraft technicians. His main concern was to have a maximum number of T-37s serviceable. Risalpur’s hot summers or cold frosty winter mornings never deterred him from being on the tarmac ensuring

A

availability of maximum aircraft. Flight Lieutenant Arif had a habit of conducting debriefings of missions in the main briefing room. He also ensured that all cadets lounging or sleeping in the changing room attended his debrief sessions. He mistakenly thought that his long debriefs would enlighten the cadets and be helpful in flying. One day he took Flight Cadet Azam, our course mate, for his solo check clearance. On that day, some of the not flying students were forced into the briefing room. We had to listen to Azam’s debriefing session conducted by Flight Lieutenant Arif. Unfortunately, for Azam, the mission had not gone well. Flight Lieutenant Arif was fuming and the briefing room was sounding with a mixture of flowery Urdu and English jargon. It was a sight to watch the broad chest instructor bellowing at full voice and a dejected skinny Azam standing miserably, trying in vain to create an impression that he was understanding the debrief. Finally towards the end the instructor repeatedly asked Azam “Why were you getting low on the final approach?” One must understand that a student has no logical explanation for ‘why.’ Azam was terror stricken and desperately searched for an answer but he could not find a suitable reply. Arif

From Rt. Yawar, Rehman, Tubrez and Maula was determined and clearly didn’t want to leave Azam without justifying his poor performance. Finally, mustering all his courage, Azam blurted out, “Sir, the aircraft was heavy today.” There was a deathly silence in the room. His response pointed to fat body of Arif. It shocked us and left Flight Lieutenant Arif speechless. He looked incredulously at Azam and we could feel that, had he not been in uniform, he would have strangled Azam. It ended the debriefing session and we hurriedly followed his order of getting in the orbit – running around the block with hands above the head. Later we asked Azam why he had replied in that manner. His innocent answer was that with Flight Lieutenant Arif in the seat the aircraft had to be heavy. But, the good part was that for next few days we were spared the debriefing sessions of Flight Lieutenant

He retired after becoming a fighter pilot and reaching the rank of Squadron Leader. Yawar is a star captain flying the Airbus aircraft. Azam also graduated as a fighter pilot and left the service after becoming a Wing Commander. He practices Law in Rawalpindi. Arif retired after rising to the rank of Air Marshal.

PARENTING BEHAVIOUR THAT COMMUNICATE ENCOURAGEMENT IN CHILDREN

By Asma Shums There is always a chance that parents and children’s want to say something to each other wants to communicate but withered the right things are said at the wrong time or they are not conveyed or received with the right impression. 1. facial expression body language: the parents do try ot control their anger or displeasure and try to be positive but their look, their body language given them away so parents please first try to be actually ready to deal with children with mental acceptance first. Parent’s please show your children that there may be disagreements or issues or problems for something but it is defiantly not for love toward children so let your children feel that you are actually ready to hear them out, consider their situation and feelings and will definitely help them unbiased of your own views and choices. 2. Choice of Right words: in any form of conversation or communication, words have different impact many times the person who is saying those words , the person who is listening and the actual massage which a speaker words to convey is something misunderstood. We often hear people saying that, No No i didn’t mean to say that, what i wanted to say was this..... The right way or the right choice of words are very important and could be less quantity. When one thing is repeated again and again, To often it loses its value. Truth is also different to taste and digest when it is coated

sometime4s one has to be hard, strict for their own good, for for training them, teaching them, guiding them. more to be continued........ Just chill

in better coating. 3. respect and dignity: This applies to both sides parties parents and children’s both should remember to keep respect of each other, However angry of frustrated one is, one cannot humiliate other person by harsh, diminishing and insulting words. Those times are gone when parents could just call their children any names and the children would sulk inside but not retort or say anything. The old values are still there but the thoughts and behaviour or say approach has become bolder, more unconventional sulk inside but not retort or say anything. The old values are still there but the thoughts and behaviour or say approach has become bolder, more unconventional. 4. loving-but firm: as a parent we need to be strict sometimes but the love comes in between the duty and what needs to be done. We as a parent are more likely to be blinded by love of our children

Some people are like luck whom we get by blessings. Some people are like blessings whom we get who change our luck.

10-country summit in Pakistan ends on call for closer ties

A regional economic summit in Pakistan on Wednesday concluded with participants pledging to collectively fight the “challenge of terrorism” and push for greater collaboration in areas of trade, energy and infrastructure development. Islamabad hosted the day-long 10-nation Economic Cooperation Organization summit that finalized a “Vision 2025” plan for expanding trade and prosperity among member nations. “There has never been a more opportune time to realize our dreams of connectivity for regional prosperity,” said Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who was elected new chairman of the organization. “We can and should achieve even more by pooling together our individual efforts for greater synergy.” Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan are among the heads of states who attended the summit. Turkey, Iran and Pakistan founded ECO in 1985. Afghanistan’s ambassador to Pakistan, Omar Zakhilwal, who represented Kabul, said that peace and stability in the region will play a greater role in achieving mutual economic goals. “We can meet the challenges of poverty by implementing a joint strategy,” Zakhiwal said. Sharif, in televised remarks at the end of the summit, expressed the member nations’ resolve to fight terrorism and extremism collectively. “We are determined to collectively face challenges such as extremism, terrorism and drug trafficking in order to realize our vision of making the region a zone of peace and prosperity,” he said. “We have committed ourselves to working together for bringing progressive change to the lives of the people in our region, transforming it into a bastion of peace, progress and prosperity.” The participants also adopted an “Islamabad Declaration” on improv-

ing trade. Earlier, heads of member states “underscored the need for expansion of cooperation in various fields under the framework of ECO,” according to a foreign ministry statement. The statement said the participants reached an understanding to “transform the ECO region into a zone of peace and collective prosperity.” The conference took place under tight security after a wave of recent suicide bombings by various militant groups killed more than 125 people across Pakistan. Pakistan’s decades-long war with local Taliban, al-Qaida-linked militants and other Islamic extremists has killed tens of thousands of people. All roads leading to the venue in Islamabad were blocked and all offices, schools and most businesses in the capital were

8m addicts in Pakistan, and counting About eight million people in Pakistan are drug addicts and the number is increasing with every passing day. This was echoed at a seminar titled “war on drugs: awareness session” organised by the University of Agriculture Faisalabad on Tuesday. Dr Asif Bajwa, a psychiatrist, said either curiosity or peer pressure moved the youth to use drugs. “Currently 8m people are addicts in Pakistan and this strength is increasingly.” He lamented that usage of sheesha was becoming common in youth and some of the sheesha sellers were using heroin in it. “Drug addiction is like terrorism which is responsible for taking lives of the innocent people.” He suggested effective legislation on sale of

drugs. UAF acting Vice Chancellor Dr Iqrar Ahmed said it was need of the hour to create awareness among masses about the menace of addiction which was playing havoc with the lives of people. He called for promoting healthy activities and sports in youth. He said the university had taken concrete steps against drug addiction on the campus. He said vigilance committees under the director (students affairs) had been constituted to nab people involved in drug addiction in the university. Dr Ather Javed said awareness about the effects of drug addiction was a prerequisite to end the menace. Dr Binish Asad and other also spoke on the occasion. Source: Dawn

closed on Wednesday. Islamabad also used the summit as a chance to show its potential as one of Asia’s emerging markets. “Our economic indicators are up,” Sharif told the meeting. Government officials have also described the summit as an opportunity to show that Pakistan cannot be isolated from the international scene. Last year, a key regional cooperation conference was cancelled after neighboring India and Afghanistan refused to attend; both nations blame Pakistani-based militants for carrying out attacks in their countries, and tensions with India have been high over cross-border violence in the disputed Kashmir region. The heads of member states left Islamabad after the summit. Source: Yahoo

Afghan general summons Pakistani ambassador over border tensions Afghanistan has asked Pakistan to reopen the border and de-escalate tensions between the two neighbouring countries, read a press release issued on Wednesday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The release said Ambassador to Afghanistan Abrar Hussain and Afghan Deputy Commanderin-Chief General Murad Ali Murad met on Feb 27, and that Gen Murad had “requested [Islamabad] for de-escalation at the border and reopening of the crossing points between the two countries”. The crossings were shut two weeks ago following a string of bombings in Pakistan that the country’s leadership blames on militants who sneak across the porous boundary to carry out attacks on its soil. Gen Murad had also highlighted challenges “due to closure of the border and cross-border shelling from Pakistan”, seeking the country’s help to reduce tensions between the two states. “He also promised to take action against terrorists on the basis of shared information,” the statement added. Ambassador Hussain, in his response, briefed Gen Murad about the circumstances motivating Pakistan’s actions, underlining that “Afghan nationals were involved in recent attacks in the country”. He stressed that Afghanistan should take appropriate measures to deny “use of its soil by terrorists against Pakistan”. Hussain said that the border was closed to prevent the movement of terrorists from across the border. He also stressed on the need for

efforts by both countries to strengthen border management. The ambassador, however, promised to transmit Afghanistan’s requests to Islamabad. Afghanistan’s envoy to Islamabad also appealed to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for reopening the border crossings between their two countries. Ambassador Omar Zakhilwal made the appeal to the Pakistani premier during his speech on Wednesday at the 10-nation Economic Cooperation Organisation summit held in Islamabad. Zakhilwal said the crossings’ closure has caused hardship to the Afghan people. Source: Dawn

PSL aims to finalise foreign players list for Lahore

With only three matches left in the UAE, the Pakistan Super League and its franchises are beginning the process of figuring out which foreign players will travel to Lahore, where the final is scheduled for March 5. On Sunday evening in Dubai, Karachi Kings became the last team to qualify for the play-offs. They begin on Tuesday in Sharjah, with Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators, the two teams that finished top, playing each other. Looming over the games, though, is the question of who from the foreign contingents of the four teams is ready to travel to Lahore. The PSL management is expected to further brief the overseas players before the play-offs begin and the primary aim remains to try and convince as many of them as possible to make the trip. However, preparations

are also underway to create a nominated pool of foreign players willing to travel in case the finalists’ current roster pulls out. On Monday, the Punjab government finally gave a public goahead to the staging of the final in Lahore. In theory, that ends the uncertainty of recent days caused by a wave of terrorist attacks across Pakistan that have claimed over 100 lives, including a suicide attack in Lahore two weeks ago when 13 people were killed. There was another blast in the city last Thursday, when at least seven people perished, heightening nerves and casting fresh doubt on the sense of bringing the final to Lahore. Though reports initially said it was a bomb, the government has since claimed it to be the result of a gas leak from a cooking cylinder. Senior league officials have worried over the fluidity of the situation, and had been waiting for a definitive go-ahead from government authorities. With that now in hand, the situation of the foreign players needs resolution. Najam Sethi, the PSL chief who was in Pakistan on Monday, said: “I will be going back to Dubai now and once the finalists are confirmed I will again talk to the franchise owners and foreign players. We have also prepared a back up list

of foreign players in case the overseas signings of the finalist teams refuse to come to Lahore.” Of the four remaining teams, Peshawar are the most confident their foreign contingent will go to Lahore should they reach the final. No player, however, has come outright and said so yet. And though no official word has come from Islamabad United, it is believed neither Brad Haddin nor Shane Watson will stay on. The two teams who might face greatest difficulties are Quetta Gladiators and Karachi Kings. Kevin Pietersen, of the former, will almost certainly not travel and Tymal Mills is also unlikely. Others such as Luke Wright and Rilee Roussow, who were considering making the trip, are said to have reassessed after the recent spate of attacks. Officially Karachi say their players will make a decision once the team’s fate is clear. Until then, it is said, their players do not want to “jinx” their chances of getting to the final by talking about it. It is almost inconceivable that Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, two players who were in the team bus in Lahore when it was attacked eight years ago, will travel. They have told officials that they cannot take the decision alone and have to consult with their families.

And the call they make could potentially have an impact on what Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard do as well. One-off payments, ranging from USD 10,000 - 50,000, are being offered to foreign players should they agree to play in Lahore. That, as one foreign player considering taking part in the final pointed out, brings its own complications. “What is the difference in me playing in Lahore under a security threat and a Pakistani player doing so?” he said. “In any attack both are at risk. And physios and masseuses? A life is a life, mine or a Pakistani player’s.” In case the teams end up severely shorthanded, a pool of nominated foreign players could be roped in. The list, initially of 54 names, has now grown to above 60 and is said to be composed of those who were not picked in the draft last October as well as additional names from outside the draft, who are willing to travel to Pakistan. Each franchise will nominate five to six players from the long list and hand it to the PSL, who hope that ultimately, accounting for common names that appear in multiple lists, they have a shortlist of 12 to 15 waiting on standby to participate in the final.

FIFA wants shared 2026 World Cup. The U.S., Mexico and Canada already were planning on it. Soccer leaders in the United States, Mexico and Canada already were talking about a joint bid for the 2026 World Cup, so they likely were well prepared for FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s announcement Thursday that FIFA will encourage bidders for soccer’s biggest tournament to partner up. “We will encourage co-hosting for the World Cup because we need FIFA to show we are reasonable and we have to think about sustainability long-term,” Infantino said, per Reuters. “[We could] … maybe bring together two, three, four countries who can jointly present a project with three, four, five stadiums each. We will certainly encourage it. Ideally the countries will be close to each other.” The idea that one nation should host

large sporting events like the World Cup or the Olympics has come under question of late considering the staggering costs associated with building facilities that become underused once the event ends. In Brazil, which hosted the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics, a number of publicly financed facilities built for those events already have fallen into a state of disrepair because of local arguments over who will maintain them. Sharing events such as the World Cup or Olympics would lessen the financial blow for countries that want to host. With its neighbors as partners or not, the United States seems well positioned to host the 2026 World Cup with numerous stadiums already in place. Plus, the consensus is that it’s North

America’s turn to host the event again. Countries in the European and Asian soccer federations are forbidden from bidding on the 2026 World Cup because they will have hosted the two previous tournaments, and the event was last held in North America in 1994. “I think any one of the countries could probably put on a good show on their own,” Victor Montagliani, president of the North American soccer federation, said of the United States, Mexico and Canada in January. “But I think there seems to be a prevailing thought that a confederationtype bid with multiple hosts is probably good for football.” The idea of a shared major soccer tournament hardly is new, either. Japan and South Korea co-

hosted what was regarded as a successful World Cup in 2002, and the European Championship has been shared by multiple countries three times in the past. It will be held in 13 cities in 13 countries in 2020. “It’s a good idea, and Europe has of course previously worked in this way on the European Championships,” Swedish FA chair Karl-Erik Nilsson told Reuters. “We are used to it and it works well, it makes it possible for more countries to arrange [tournaments], and in that way it is positive.” The host or, more likely, hosts of the 2026 World Cup will be announced in 2020. It will be the first World Cup with 48 teams after FIFA voted to expand the tournament from 32 last month.
